'Appalling' snub over Cossham Hospital bid A DECISION by health chiefs not to look at a new call for a minor injuries treatment centre at Cossham Hospital has been condemned as “appalling”. Kingswood Councillor Andrea Reid told a meeting of South Gloucestershire Council’s Health Scrutiny Commission that a petition signed by more than 5,000 people calling for the facility had been ignored. She said she was “fuming” that Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire CCG, which runs NHS services in the area and has the slogan ‘Shaping Better Health, had dismissed the latest demand for a minor injuries unit (MIU) without any debate. It meant that people from Kingswood still faced a journey to the nearest MIU in Yate, six miles away and with poor bus links, if they needed treatment. This would lead to continuing health inequalities for residents of the area, which has higher than average numbers of people with disabilities, Cllr Reid said. “A health inequalities impact assessment has not been completed; an equalities Turn to Page 6

Hanham High Street was packed for the street fair, which celebratee the jubilee a week after the bank holiday. Right, a spectacular display of patriotism outside the Jolly Sailor

Jubilation and joy MORE than 3,000 revellers descended on Hanham High Street to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Visitors enjoyed stalls, street entertainers, refreshments and a fun fair. The event took place the weekend after the main jubilee celebrations because of road closure restrictions. Bernard Jackson from Hanham Business and Community Partnership, which organised and funded the event, said: “It was the best fair we’ve ever run on the High Street. There was a huge turn out and people had a fantastic day out.” A JUBILEE picnic for the Kingswood community attracted crowds of residents. Despite the showery weather, people turned out in force to the Pageant in the Park, waving flags and dressed in red, white and blue. The event was held on the final day of the jubilee weekend from 11am to 4pm and offered arts and crafts, activity classes and live entertainment including a band. People were invited to bring their own picnic and watch the televised events on a big screen. Zaya Brooks, Kingswood Community Development Officer at Southern Brooks Community Partnership, was there on the day to help the event run smoothly. She said: “What a fantastic day in Kingswood Park. Managed to stay dry and really was great to see so many people out enjoying the activities and watching the 24 hour Locksmith Service (all types of doors) Jubilee fun in Kingswood Park televised celebrations.”

Sludge is removed from the pond

A new look for the nature haven

Volunteers add new plants

Celebrations at Willsbridge Mill as revamped pond area is completed BRISTOL’S original animated superstar, Morph, thrilled attendees by cutting the ribbon for the new pond area at Willsbridge Mill. The cheeky, modelling-clay figure was there along with his creator Peter Lord, co-founder of Aardman Animations. Volunteers at Willsbridge Mill Community Refresh (WMCR) have spent over a year refurbishing the Pearsall Mill Pond. It was built in 1978 but had developed a leak. Now it is restored, along with a new jetty that’s perfect for pond dipping by visiting children. The area also boasts a new mosaic newt seat. Tom Baker, WMCR director, said: “The pond had been leaking and silting up quite badly in recent years, and the water quality wasn’t great for wildlife. “The paths, fencing and staging were originally installed by Avon Wildlife Trust over 40 years ago and the stages had

Aardman founder Peter Lord, third from left, with volunteers become rotten and dangerous.” Volunteers raised £4,000, supplemented by a £57,000 grant from Enovert Trust, to allow the work to take place. Mr Baker said: “We decided

to call the new pond the Pearsall Pond, in memory of John Pearsall who purchased the land in 1721 and built the iron mill. “He also created a mill pond to provide power to the mill

machinery and this new pond is in the exact same spot. “We want to say a huge thanks to Enovert Trust and our dedicated team of volunteers, who turn up each week, working in all weather, to create the wonderful surrounds you see and enjoy.” The growing popularity of the area means WMCR is asking for more volunteers. In particular, helpers are needed to run the gift shop, which opens from 10am-1pm on Wednesdays and weekends. Preparations are also underway for Millfest 22, a music and arts festival taking place on Saturday 27 August. Revellers can enjoy a stage with live music, craft stalls, games and refreshments from 11am4.30pm. Adult tickets cost £5.98 and children go free. The mill is looking for local businesses to sponsor the event in exchange for advertising.

Junior school rated Good 'Appalling' snub HANHAM Abbots junior school is celebrating after improving its Ofsted rating to “Good.” Inspectors visited the school and said that pupils enjoy attending, bullying is rare, the children feel safe and cared for and parents are happy with the school. Other positives were a wide range of school clubs, effective support for children with additional needs, and wellunderstood school rules. The report said: “Changes to the federation leadership have brought about positive improvements to the school. “Leaders and staff have high expectations of pupils’ learning and behaviour. “Pupils have a well-rounded understanding of diversity and equality. They say that school teaches them to ‘accept everyone for who they are’ regardless of difference.” However, Ofsted flagged areas for improvement in some

subjects where the school leaders haven’t clarified what should be learned. The report said: “Where subjects are less well developed, such as geography, pupils do not develop the depth of knowledge they should. Consequently, their understanding of important concepts is patchy. “It is clear from the leaders’ actions that they are in the process of bringing about the necessary improvements.” The report is an improvement on the last inspection four years ago, when it was rated “Requires improvement.” Executive headteacher Gabby Howells said: “I am extremely proud of this report as it recognises the determination of staff through our vision to ensure pupils are not only receiving the National Curriculum, but that they are also setting high examples of being kind, which we know – more than ever – is needed in our world.”

From Page 1 impact assessment has not been completed. I would like to ask the chair and members of the CCG how on average they feel this shapes better health,” she said. Cllr Reid later told the Voice that the CCG had been disrespectful to the people of east Bristol by not considering the petition, which was started by Josh Ditte, a nurse at Southmead Hospital. “If I had 5,000 people coming to me disputing a decision I’d made then the very least I’d do would be to look at that decision again, even if I came to the same conclusion,” she said. “I had a fall myself this week and hurt both ankles and my shoulder. I wasn’t able to stand at a bus stop, I don’t drive and wouldn’t have been able to anyway with two sprained ankles, so I ended up getting no medical treatment because I had no way of getting to Yate or Southmead after a previous long campaign

failed to secure minor injuries treatment in the refurbished Cossham Hospital.” She said next steps were being considered to continue the fight for a MIU at Cossham. The CCG told the Voice it did not have to carry out an equalities impact assessment for a proposal it was not taking forward. At its meeting in April officials said the CCG it would be too difficult to staff an MIU at Cossham. Mr Ditte’s campaign followed a campaign that saved Cossham Hospital from closure but did not secure an MIU following a £19 million revamp of the buildings on Lodge Hill, which are more than 100 years old. Cossham now houses a small birth centre, outpatient services, physiotherapy, a dialysis unit, audiology department and X-ray and scanning department. The CCG chose to run a pilot service treating minor injuries at local GP surgeries instead of an MIU, but this ended in 2018.

n NEWS Banjo Island bench marks platinum anniversary

7

Have your say on sites

A JUBILEE bench has been installed by Oldland parish council opposite Cadbury Heath shops. The steel design features a design of thistles, roses, clover and daffodils, representing the four countries of the United Kingdom. The wording says: “Queen Elizabeth II, 1952-2022, Platinum Jubilee.” It was made by Scottish firm David Ogilvie Engineering and cost the council around £1,200. Claire Dolman, parish council clerk, said: “The bench is on Banjo Island and a lot of older residents have said they wanted somewhere to have a sit down on their way home from the shops. “There used to be a bench there but it was vandalised. Hopefully because the new one is made of steel it will last. “Councillors were delighted that the bench was delivered and installed in time for the Jubilee weekend and hope that residents will enjoy it for many years to come.”

THREE sites have been earmarked by South Gloucestershire council as potential locations for a Jubilee park in Cadbury Heath. They are Banjo Island, Warmley former pitch and putt course off Cowhorn Hill, or Tarzan park on Coronation Road. A council spokesperson said: “We’d like views on selecting the site for a new park in Cadbury Heath to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and as a tribute to HRH Duke of Edinburgh’s passion for wildlife and nature. The aim is also to boost biodiversity with, for instance, tree planting, wildflower and habitat creation, accessible paths, seating, waste bins and signs. This investment could lead to further regeneration for Cadbury Heath, providing a springboard to further improvements in the community.” The council has drawn up a list of pros and cons for each site. Tarzan park has good links to public transport and could include a small orchard, but is restricted by size and surrounded by houses. The report said: “The landscape of the site makes it extremely difficult to ensure those with a disability can access the site.” The pitch and putt is the largest of the three spaces so has good potential for nature recovery and could include a community orchard. However, the report said: “The site has a history of anti-social behaviour. There are ongoing issues with unauthorised motorbike use. Noise carries across the valley of Siston Brook.” Banjo Island is a popular location already used by lots of residents and has good transport links. However, the report warned: “The site has utility services (gas, electric etc.) underneath, which will restrict planting and landscape options.” The park is likely to be created in 2023, with the rest of this year dedicated to designing the park. The public consultation closes on 11 July and you can share your views here: orlo.uk/t50lK

OBE for MP

KINGSWOOD MP Chris Skidmore has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Birthday Honours. Mr Skidmore, who has represented the constituency since May 2010, has held several ministerial roles, and received the honour for his public and parliamentary service. Mr Skidmore told the PA news agency: “I’m very grateful for the award for my continued work in higher education and the environment since leaving government – though don’t deserve it compared to the thousands of academics and businesses working hard to deliver on our climate commitments. “So it’s to their recognition I dedicate the award and above all to maintaining our net zero commitments.”

Bid to act on noisy ring-road drivers THE Avon Ring Road has been nominated for a national trial of noise cameras to crackdown on noisy vehicles. If selected, the A4174 would be fitted with acoustic cameras that detect when an engine or exhaust is exceeding the legal limit of 74 decibels. The camera can use automatic numberplate recognition to take a picture and send details to the local police. Drivers exceeding the noise limit face a £50 fine and it should be easier for police to fine when they have evidence from the camera. However, residents up and down the country have been invited to nominate their noisy roads for the trial so competition is likely to be fierce. Only four will be selected, with £300,000 of government funding allocated for the project. Chris Skidmore, Kingswood MP, and Sam Bromiley, ward

®

Chris Skidmore with Sam and Elizabeth Bromiley

councillor for Parkwall and Warmley, have nominated the ring road to help reduce noise from illegally-modified vehicles disturbing residents. Cllr Bromiley said: “Keeping our community safe and peaceful is an important priority for us and I hope these innovative noise cameras will provide evidence for police to take action against rowdy motorists, helping communities to enjoy peaceful

public and residential spaces. These inconsiderate and reckless drivers have long been an issue within the community with the noise pollution they create no doubt having a detrimental impact on hard-working people’s lives as well as disrupting sleep for so many people.” Mr Skidmore said: “I will be pressing minsters to consider our area for inclusion in this national trial.”

Howzat for a day to remember?

YOUNG cricketers enjoyed training from professionals in Warmley. Around 30 children age five to 11 attending the junior All Stars and Dynamos sections of Bristol United Banks Cricket Club (BUBCC) at The Batch took part in the session. Gloucestershire County Board sent along its captain, Graeme van Burren, along with his children, plus the board’s head of community, Pete Lamb. Sarah Smith, BUBCC assistant coach, said: “This was a moneycan’t-buy experience that will remain with the children for the rest of their lives. Graeme and his children mixed with the kids in no time and we all had a fantastic, memorable day of training sessions.” BUBCC chairman Edwin Morris said: “Seeing so many youngsters having a blast playing cricket is always enjoyable. “I hope to see some of those faces again at Gloucestershire games this summer.” The cricket youth section trains at The Batch on Sundays from 1011am and is organising a series of games and tournaments. The team also runs youth winter nets at Hanham Woods academy.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Let's recycle soft plastics

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

WE have a great level of recycling here in South Gloucestershire – one of the highest in the country – and that’s thanks to the incredible efforts of environmentally-mindful residents who sort their waste and recycling every week, diverting it away from landfill. But there is still room for improvement and the council are looking at ways to further improve on this, drive recycling up to 70% with zero biogenic waste to landfill by 2030. There is a big gap in our recycling ability, as soft-plastics are currently not collected as part of our waste service. Whilst cans, cardboard and glass all regularly line our streets on collection day, so many everyday items, such as plastic bags, crisp packets, and pet food pouches are not collected. Flexible plastic packaging in

fact represents nearly a quarter of all UK consumer plastic packaging, but only 6 per cent is currently recycled. This is why I am working with my fellow local MPs on our soft-plastic campaign, with the support of the community, to secure this type of recycling for our communities so we drive up our recycling rates yet further. Excitingly, South Gloucestershire Council have submitted a bid for our area to be included in a national pilot scheme that is due to be launched, which would see softplastic recycling trialled in our area, with collections from the kerbside. This would be a real, positive step to help reduce household waste and protect our environment.

I have also met with the Environment Minister in Parliament to raise the profile of our campaign, so we can ensure South Gloucestershire Council is part of this exciting programme. Nationally, work is continuing to tackle plastic waste, and the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan has committed to work towards all plastic packaging placed on the market being recyclable or reusable by 2025. Steps have also been taken to steps to boost the market for plastic recycling, including the Plastic Packaging Tax in April 2022, which will see a charge of £200 per tonne on plastic packaging with less than 30 recycled content. As your local MP, I will continue to champion action to protect our precious local environment.

S H Family Law Limited About us

S H Family Law specialises solely in family law, enabling us to be experts in our field. We offer an initial free 30 minute consultation either in the office, remotely or over the telephone. We understand what a difficult and worrying time it can be when a relationship breaks down and how important it is to have access to good, sensible unbiased advice; delivered in a way which can be understood to enable you to make the choices which best suit your family. We pride ourselves on our quality of advice, professional level of service and transparency over costs.

A new dawn for divorce law As from 6 April 2022, a new procedure for obtaining a divorce came into force. The new procedure means it is no longer

necessary to blame the other party’s unreasonable behaviour or adultery; wait until you have been separated for a minimum of 2 years or in some cases 5 years to be able to dissolve your marriage. The new procedure provides for the person bringing the petition (the Applicant) to confirm that they believe the marriage has broken down irretrievably. The application for divorce can be made by one party to the marriage or a joint application can be made, should

both parties consider this their preferred approach. The new rules have introduced a 20 week ‘reflection period’ within which time the divorce cannot be progressed. During this time it is envisaged that most parties will finalise matters arising from the relationship breakdown, such as making financial and childcare arrangements. Following this 20 week period the Applicant(s) can apply for a Conditional Order and six weeks and one day following

the Conditional Order being made, the Applicant(s) can apply for the Final Order. The Final Order being the legal document which dissolves the marriage. The changes will be welcome for most, as having to blame the other party or wait a lengthy separation period often created a barrier between parties, making it more difficult to resolve important issues surrounding the breakdown. For example, focusing on what is best for any children of the marriage or making decisions about financial matters. Should you wish to receive any further advice in connection with the new divorce procedure or any other area of family law, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Flytipper ordered to pay £6,649 A FLY-TIPPER who dumped piles of rubbish in Overscourt Wood has been found guilty at Bristol Magistrates Court. Ishtiaq Ishaq, 62, from St George was caught by South Gloucestershire council’s environmental crime team. They examined the fly-tipped piles of waste and found details of Ishaq along with his home and business addresses. They also contained details of another property owned by Ishaq. As well as dumping rubbish in Overscourt Wood, Siston, he was also found guilty for fly-tipping in Bromley Heath Road in Downend, Brewery Hill in Upton Cheyney and Beech Lane in Hawkesbury Upton. The fly-tipping took place in September 2020. When he was caught, he initially denied fly-tipping the rubbish and claimed he had paid someone else to remove the waste from his properties, but couldn’t provide any details of who that was or how to contact them. Ishaq was summoned to court and pleaded guilty to failing in his Duty of Care to ensure his waste was properly disposed of. He was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £6,649. Councillor Rachael Hunt, cabinet member for environmental crime, said: “This case saw fly-tips take place at four separate locations across the area without any thought given to the impact it would have on our residents or the environment. “We all have a responsibility to dispose of our waste in a responsible and lawful manner. If you hire a company to dispose of your waste, always ask for a copy of the company’s waste carrier registration certificate and ask where the waste is being taken, or you could be found liable and face a considerable fine.” She said that the council’s zero-tolerance approach means flytippers in South Gloucestershire are five times more likely to be prosecuted than anywhere else in the country. Residents who see fly-tipping are encouraged to report it to the council’s StreetCare helpdesk on 01454 868000 or at www.southglos. gov.uk/flytipping

n AROUND THE WIs LONGWELL GREEN WI WITH the weather warming up and the evenings getting lighter for longer Longwell Green WI have had a busy two months. We had a useful and interesting visit to Fonthill garden centre where we were shown ideas of how to plant up hanging baskets and patio pots and members were able to buy their plants to have a go for themselves. In May it was our resolutions evening where we discussed whether the resolution - Women and Girls with ASD and ADHD are under identified, under-diagnosed, misdiagnosed and under supported. Members then voted in favour of this going forward to the National Federation WI meeting for them to start a campaign. (At the national meeting 96.5% of WIs voted that the resolution should be passed). This was followed by an interesting talk and slide show by Jackie Baker on Downend in Bloom. She explained all the hard work and logistics that goes into making Downend look so good all

year round. For the Queen's Platinum Jubilee our knitting group and other members knitted 100 metres of red, white and blue bunting, many roses to make a floral display in Longwell Green Community Centre and a post

Our new building will open in Hygge Park Keynsham in September 2022 PLACES Your child will get off to a great start with us

Members are looking forward to trips to Windsor including a boat trip and cream tea and for a train trip in the Brecon Beacons. Hopefully the weather will stay warm and sunny for these outings. At our July meeting we are looking forward to having a talk by Susan Symons on "Victoria, the Widowed Queen". We have lots of groups that our members can participate in. There are book clubs, walking groups, knitting group, skittles and social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at The Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI regular meetings are on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com, telephone 0117 9864782 or come along on the meeting evening. Linda Muller

HANHAM AFTERNOON WI OUR President welcomed 56 ladies to the June Members Meeting when we held our Celebrations in honour of our Queens Platinum Jubilee Anniversary Tables were set out with cutlery, wine glasses and central table decorations of flowers and flags in red, white and blue. A few ladies had raided their wardrobes and wore hats. We had a fabulous afternoon tea, with lots of delicious cakes, fresh strawberry cheesecake and sandwiches, and toasted the Queen with non alcoholic Prosecco. Then we set into scones, jam and cream and a welcome cuppa. Whilst we enjoyed this glorious feast we were able to view a montage of photographs reflecting on the wonderful life and reign of our Queen. Including the short video made of Her Majesty's afternoon tea with Paddington Bear. Our ladies had been asked to bring along items they may have which commemorated the coronation in 1953. An assortment of items were produced,, among which we saw a bottle of stout, especially brewed for the Coronation and a tapestry with part of the first momentous Xmas speech the Queen had made in 1952. Each table had been given a Royal Quiz which was quite a challenge. It seems that although there were 8 ladies (on each table) none could not get 100% correct answers. This was a wonderful afternoon which everyone enjoyed and will remember for many years to come. Our July meeting will be our last meeting before the summer break and will be held on July 11th at 1.30pm We shall be learning about the colourful and personal life of Queen Victoria. New members are always welcome, if you are interested in joining us, please contact me on 01179325027. Ann Baulch HANHAM EVENING WI THE Bristol Old Vic Theatre in King Street was built in 1764 and, as we were told by our May speaker Andrew Stock, is the oldest continually-operating theatre in England. Andrew is one the longest serving employees although he informed us he doesn’t date back quite as long as the theatre. He entertained and amused us with stories of “happenings” at the theatre during his many years working there. It was fascinating to hear of the many famous names who began their careers there. Actors such as Daniel Day-Lewis, Jeremy Irons, Patrick Stewart and Annette Crosbie graced the stage in their early days before moving on. Most of the actors who started out at the Old Vic still remember the place with great affection and often return. He reminded us that the theatre has undergone many changes during its existence but still remains one of the premier theatres in the country. Our June meeting saw the return of one of our favourite speakers Dr Francis Burroughs. His talk was on The Wonderful World of Glass and he drew on many of his experiences from his years in the industry and also from owning a glass making factory in Bristol. The highlight of the evening was to see and actually touch the glassware that he brought along to show us. The examples were many and varied and included antique exhibits as well as new ones but he happily passed them around. Some were worth thousands of pounds and members were almost frightened to handle them as they were so delicate and, of course, so valuable. We were extremely grateful to Dr Burroughs for coming all the way from Yeovil to give us his talk. The evening concluded with our Jubilee Celebration. We had tea served in lovely bone china cups supplied by one of our members and cakes befitting the occasion including Victoria Sandwich, Battenburg and Red Velvet Dianna Coles

n NEWS Support for school uniform costs SAMUEL White’s infant school has received £1,000 from Hanham Parish Council to fund school uniforms. The council donated the money to help parents who are facing financial hardship, after Alderman Heather Goddard addressed the parish council and asked them to consider financial support. Other projects that have been granted funding are East Bristol Foodbank, which was given £2,000, as well a £1,000 donation to a community garden at the rear of the Church of Ascension. The garden includes bat boxes and bird nesting boxes, planting to attract butterflies and bees and provides a quiet area for residents to sit. It may also be used for nature study by schoolchildren. Nicola Little, clerk to Hanham Parish Council, said: “The parish council undertook a community project review in May 2022 for the final year of a three-year spending plan. “Due to Covid restrictions and lockdowns, some of the planned community projects did not take place. As a result, some surplus funds were available. Councillors discussed the matter at some length and identified projects that would benefit the local community mentally and financially.”

IKB celebrates Good rating from Ofsted IKB Academy is celebrating after being rated Good in all areas by Ofsted. Inspectors said pupils, staff and leaders were enthusiastic about the ‘unique’ school and its specialism in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). “Pupils feel valued at IKB. They say staff know them very well and as a result they feel supported to do their best. Some pupils told us their experience at IKB has renewed their enthusiasm for learning,” the report said. Three inspectors from the education watchdog visited IKB on April 5 and 6. Their findings included: • Leaders have an ambitious vision for the school • Teachers have high expectations in all curriculum areas • Teachers have strong subject knowledge and use it well to plan learning • Pupils feel safe in school and

STEM-focused curriculum and to develop their interests. While this ‘important aspect of the school’s offer’ had been affected by the pandemic, school leaders were beginning to rebuild it. Year 10 students were out on work experience at the time of the visit. Ofsted praised the

support given to the personal development of the 162 students, who are aged 14-19. Principal Debbie Gibbs said she was delighted at the inspectors’ findings, which rated IKB as Good for quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management and sixth-form provision. “This is an important milestone for IKB Academy and is a tribute to the hard work of our staff team and our students with the support of families, the community, and the trust,” she said. “I am so pleased that our students were able to talk with enthusiasm about their learning and experiences at IKB and that the strengths of our provision were recognised by the inspectors. We are ambitious for all our students and do all we can to ensure they have the knowledge, skills and experience to succeed.”

Valuation day success

I WRITE this just a few days after our first Valuation Roadshow event of the year – which we held at the wonderful Kingswood Heritage Museum in Warmley. Before the pandemic, we used to hold these events monthly at various locations throughout the South West – and they were always the highlight of our month. Having chance to sit down with clients in a relaxed setting, away from the hustle and bustle of a busy saleroom allows us to focus on the fun part of the job; meeting people and discovering wonderful objects. Our Kingswood Heritage Museum Valuation Day certainly didn’t disappoint. We saw over one hundred people throughout the afternoon, and valued a myriad of items – everything from old tools to rare artwork, many items of which were left with us for our upcoming auctions. Several treasures unearthed during the day – including a William IV solid silver teapot (estimate £400 to £600), a rare German pocket watch (estimate £300 to £500), and perhaps my favourite item of the day – an original camera script from the classic Fawlty Towers episode ‘Waldorf Salad’ (estimate £800 to £1,200). It never ceases to amaze me what people have lurking in their lofts, wardrobes or garages that may otherwise end up being disposed of. Our saleroom on Memorial Road is open every weekday for valuations without appointment, but if you’d like to come to one of our Roadshows then you would be most welcome. You can bring as many, or as few items as you wish. The valuations are free and there is no obligation to leave them with us for auction. If you have something too big to carry, just take pictures on your camera or phone and show them to us when you arrive. We have a fabulous team of enthusiastic valuers, with expertise in all manner of fields and we are all happy to give free auction advice or valuations on any item you may have. Come and use us! Our next Valuation Roadshows are being held at Emersons Green Village Hall on July 9th from 1pm to 4pm, and at Avon Valley Railway on August 13th from 10am to 2pm. Andy Stowe East Bristol Auctions

A year of sharing strimmers and strippers! PRESSURE washers, wallpaper strippers and carpet cleaners have been loaned hundreds of times to homes in Kingswood and beyond. The region’s first Library of Things opened on Kingswood High Street a year ago. The not-for-profit organisation is celebrating its first birthday with its busiest month to date, lending 90 items to residents. The idea is simple: instead of buying items for your home that you only need occasionally, you borrow them from the library and return them when you’re finished with them for someone else to use. The initiative aims to save people money, free up storage space in homes and stop wastage. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Be on guard against summer holiday fraud SINCE the Platinum Jubilee celebrations that took place in early June, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on the brilliant sense of community that surrounded the occasion. After two uncertain years, the coming together of neighbourhoods and the fantastically-organised street parties highlighted how important community groups are and the impressive amount that they can achieve. The Jubilee celebrations coincided with Volunteers’ Week. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner has always depended on the good will of local volunteers who sit on its scrutiny panels. So, I would like to express how grateful I am for the dedication and commitment of our volunteers, who are an essential part of our team. Whilst celebrating those who continue to make the OPCC a better organisation, I would also like to congratulate Chief Constable Sarah Crew for being awarded the Queen’s Police Medal. She has been recognised for her commitment and

dedication to improving the policing response to rape and serious sexual offences (RASSO). The Chief Constable holds the position of national policing lead for RASSO at the National Police Chief’s Council and has played an instrumental role in providing support for victims and survivors. Last year, she focused on building her national role launching an evidence-based approach to investigating RASSO offences, called Project Bluestone. This pioneering initiative was developed in collaboration with leading academics and in consultation with partners across the criminal justice system and victim services. Avon and Somerset Police was at the helm of implementing this pilot project, with the outcomes and findings now informing a national change in the policing approach to RASSO offences. Finally, with the summer holidays fast approaching, I wanted to raise awareness around holiday fraud and urge local people to be mindful and vigilant when booking flights or accommodation online.

With many excited to go abroad following the pandemic, criminals are taking the opportunity to exploit holiday-goers for their own financial gain. Although there are many legitimate booking platforms, some criminals use these sites to defraud victims by advertising counterfeit accommodation. Equally, many are conned by fraudsters impersonating legitimate travel companies, comparison websites and airline websites. In other cases, victims reported responding to an approach or advertisement on social media. Victims have reported being contacted by criminals masquerading as airline or flight comparison employees who offer to take them through the booking procedure, taking a payment at the end. Thereafter, the fraudster may cut off contact or provide their victim with false booking information. Unfortunately, it is not rare for those targeted to only realise that they have been defrauded once they arrive at the airport and are not permitted to check-in.

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford I must emphasise the importance of conducting thorough research before giving away personal details or handing over money. If a travel deal feels suspicious or too good to be true, trust your instincts. You can visit my website to read the top tips on avoiding holiday fraud and remember, if you do fall victim, always report the crime to Action Fraud.

Hdy Leading the way in delivering hdy

What is the difference between an independent fostering agency and a Local Authority? Foster carers in the UK can apply to work with either a local authority (LA) or an independent fostering agency (IFA). The choice depends on what feels right for them. Finding good-quality foster parents to look after the rising number of children in care is an ongoing challenge for local authorities. This is particularly the case for older children, siblings, cookie and cutter approach. young people with disabilities, where it can be a little more Butdifficult we know tothat findeveryone’s suitable foster homes due to complex needs. needs are Therefore, different and that’s independent fostering agencies in the UK work certainly thetocase withtrain demands hard recruit, and support foster parents to be able to care for affordable housing. for these young people and provide them with the enjoyable So, childhood I am delighted the theythat deserve. new affordable housing hhh

HOUSING is a major topic of our time. Constantly-rising prices can make it difficult for younger people to take their first steps onto the property ladder or limit their ability to stay in the communities they grow up in if they want to. Having a safe, secure, affordable home is a fundamental need for everyone at every stage of life, which is why I am so pleased with our record in delivering the high-quality, affordable homes South Gloucestershire needs. Over the past year, more than 560 new affordable homes were completed, of which more than 280 were for social rent, 56 for affordable rent and 224 for shared ownership. This council has a strong track record of affordable housing delivery, having seen almost

1,200 new affordable homes built since 2018. In fact, over recent years, South Gloucestershire has regularly delivered more than 40 per cent of all new affordable homes in the West of England region. It is particularly pleasing to see when the shock waves of the COVID-19 pandemic are still being felt acutely across all sectors, including in construction. Although we have been making real progress, there is always more to do. So, we will continue to work closely with housing associations and developers to make sure that we get the new homes we need, built so that our communities grow in a sustainable way. Glancing at new estates, it can sometimes appear that developers have taken a one-size-fits-all,

n NOSTALGIA You're never too young to learn about our history

THE DRAMWAY The "Avon and Gloucestershire Dramroad / Dramway" was the second oldest overground rail system in the West of England. The Dramway was started in the late 1700s by Lord Middleton, taken over in 1828 by the Kennet and Avon Canal Company, and officially opened in 1832. It was used to carry coal from a number of local collieries to the River Avon by horse-drawn freight wagons on rails. Each of the wagons on the Dramway held four tons

of coal and ran along rails which were fitted to stone “sleepers” quarried in Willsbridge. Most of the Dramway was closed in 1865 due to the advent of the steam railway. A part was reopened in 1903 to take coal from the California Pit in Longwell Green, but closed in the following year following the flooding of the pit. The photograph shows Ram Hill colliery, one of the most northerly parts of the dram road.

LOCAL councillors visited Kingswood Heritage Museum to see its refurbishments. Toby Savage, ward councillor for Longwell Green, and Sam Bromiley, ward councillor for Parkwall and Warmley, both brought along their baby sons for the tour. Alan Bryant, the museum’s joint curator, said: “We were delighted to have welcomed councillors Savage and Bromiley to visit the museum with their children and view our exhibitions. “It is never too early to get enthusiastic about local history and it was great they were able to share the visit with their children. “Hopefully one day they might return as adults with their own children.” Cllr Bromiley said: “Having grown up nearby you think you know a lot about the community, but I was amazed by how much I learned about our heritage during our tour of the museum.” The museum is open from 2-5pm on Tuesdays and weekends.

Longwell Green exhibition

This year’s new exhibitions at Kingswood Heritage Museum include spotlights on the areas of Cadbury Heath, Barrs Court, Longwell Green and Willsbridge. The Longwell Green area in particular has changed significantly in recent years, with large numbers of new houses and the development of retail and leisure facilities. The photograph (left) from the exhibition shows the visit in 1988 by the well – known actor Patrick Mower to then newly built Lovell homes on Long Beach Road in Longwell Green.

Museum talks in August

This year’s programme of monthly talks continues at Kingswood Heritage Museum on Wednesday August 10th with a presentation by David Hardwick on the last 60 years of Bristol’s coalfields. Admission costs £4, including tea or coffee, and seats can be reserved by calling 0117 960 5664.

n BOWLS COMPETITIVE bowling sometimes takes a back seat at Keynsham Bowling Club. Jubilee Sunday was such an occasion as members gathered to celebrate two events – the Queen’s platinum jubilee and to acknowledge 50 years’ membership of the club by David Bendall. Forty-eight bowlers dressed in red, white and blue took part in a friendly roll-up, with teams selected by club captain Carm Riccio. Before the start, all players took part in a spider, whereby they spread out and, at a given time, all rolled a wood towards a toy spider in the centre of the green. The closest to the spider was club chairman Ian Tweedie, who won a food hamper, and the £1 entry fee for each bowler raised over £25 for the captain’s charity – the Dorothy House Hospice. While the weather was overcast, the rain held off until the last couple of ends. The bowlers then adjourned to the clubhouse, where another 30 non-players had also gathered. A toast to the Queen was

David Bendall, left, is congratulated by club chairman Ian Tweedie on having been a member for 50 years proposed by club president John Nix. We then sang the National Anthem - first verse only - before sitting down to a cream tea. For the second part of our celebrations, club chairman Ian Tweedie presented a bottle of malt

whiskey and a garden voucher to David Bendall. Ian said that David’s name has regularly appeared on the honours boards. He has won the men’s two woods three times, the mixed pairs five times and has been the men’s

His success in bowling is equalled by his commitment off the green, as he was the club captain in 1990, president from 1992 to 1999, chairman from 2005 to 2006 and is now one of the club trustees. He was president of the Somerset Bowling Association in 2012 and was subsequently made a life member. He took on the role of the county league secretary in 2016, a position he still holds. As Ian also is the club’s poet laureate, he presented David with a framed poem he wrote to commemorate the event. David responded by telling members of his joy at being part of the club, a place he looks on as his second home. Since this weekend at the start of June, our green has been well used with a combination of ladies and gents league and friendly fixtures, plus members playing against one another in the club competitions. More news on the bowling front next month. Mike Barrow

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Reasons to be optimistic: brilliant West of England green jobs

I CAN’T get a new NHS dentist for love nor money. I’ve got constituents telling me they can’t renew their passports, or pay HMRC, or get a driving test, or that you have to ring back tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow to see the GP. This is Backlog Britain, and it is letting West of England families down. Couple this with lorry driver shortages and Brexit bureaucracy-related delays, especially when full UK border controls came into force at the end of January and there are a whole series of other problems grinding us down - getting an electrician, or frankly a full choice at the local supermarket. Chlorine shortages at swimming pools and even the great British classic of fish and chips is facing an uncertain future. Some of these problems were unforeseeable - let’s be fair - but others could have been avoided with some governmental horizon-scanning. After all, with an ageing workforce the lorry driver shortage has been on the cards for years. Given the environmental crisis we face and the need for rapid change, one thing I want to ensure is that we in the West do some green

horizon-scanning and get ahead of the curve when it comes to jobs of the future. So I made that the focus of this year’s Jobs and Skills Summit which I run. Change is coming. Soon, when you take your electric car to the garage, you’ll want to speak to a mechanic who’s been trained in up-to-date tech, not who can get a rusty petrol banger started. When the central heating is playing up, it won’t be a plumber you’ll need but a heat pump engineer. That future is coming very, very soon. It means training workers right now. So it was great to meet brilliant students from Chew Valley school, who are the first to be taking part in a new West of England Combined Authority-funded programme to encourage local youngsters to consider green jobs. At round-tables I heard from union reps, talented tradespeople (including those working at Bristol’s Urbane Eco, who are retrofitting homes across the region) and South Gloucestershire engineers working on ‘cleantech’. I asked them about what encouraged them into their careers. With a £20 million skills budget, it is so im-

portant for me to hear direct what skills training works, what needs improvement and to find out local people’s top tips to get more people enthused. Opportunities abound for decent, well-paid and fulfilling jobs which will get Britain working again and are vital if we are to reach our very ambitious and necessary West of England net-zero targets. You can’t just scrape by on a wing and a prayer, whatever the PM thinks. I’ve never been a “what will be, will be” person – I think the future is, very much, ours to see.

n BOWLS THE last Sunday in May saw Frys Bowling Club host a Big Bowls Weekend Open Day. Around 12 people turned up to give the game of bowls a go.

The following Friday, Frys held their Diamond Jubilee barbecue with about 60 members and guests attending. A good afternoon was enjoyed by everyone which included a raffle and two hotly contested bowls spiders. The club would like to thank St Monica’s Trust for their generous grant towards the event and to all members who contributed. A rare Bank Holiday game against Canford took place on Thursday June 2, with Canford taking the early lead. Canford would remain ahead at the halfway point with an 8 shot lead on rink 3 giving the visitors the advantage, with rinks 1 and 2 remaining tight. The game changed after the halfway point as rink 3 saw the

home side take an unanswered 13 shots on the final 8 ends. Rink 2 picked up 6 shots on a single end, flipping the game on its head. Despite Rink 1 falling behind and just missing out on their points on the final end, rinks 2 and 3 saw Frys home to a comfortable 52-38 win picking up another 8 points to move up the table. Scores: Rink 1: 16-18; Rink 2: 20-9; Rink 3: 16-11; Frys 52-38 Canford (2-8). The following games were less successful as Frys fell behind after a promising start at Ardagh with only 2 points in the 33-54 loss. The following week Keynsham visited Somerdale. A good game was tight till halfway when Keynsham pulled away on rink 2, with both teams earning draws on the other two rinks leaving Frys with another 2 points from the 3949 loss. This leaves Frys in 7th place after 8 games ahead of a month which sees Frys start various cups.
