Kleeneze site plans unveiled Plans for 204 homes on the former Kleeneze site in Hanham have been unveiled. Developer Homes England aims to create an “urban lifestyles” housing development on the plot bordered by Anstey’s Road, New Walk and Martin’s Road It will include houses and flats, live/work spaces, a business hub and an area that could be used for residential care for the elderly, health care or a creche. The suggested layout includes a village green in the centre of the estate including a play area, with

taller buildings overlooking it to deter antisocial behaviour. Shorter buildings would be placed on the outskirts, to match the existing homes surrounding the site. The Sealtech site next door will continue operating, with its access moved to New Walk subject to planning permission. Homes England, the government housing delivery agency, bought the site in 2020. Tesco had previously gained planning permission to build a supermarket there but did not develop it. Report: Page 4

Bid for homes, shop and surgery A PUBLIC survey took place last month to gather views on plans to redevelop Chief Trading Post café and shop. Plans for the site on Barry Road include demolishing the existing buildings on the site. Developers Oldland Common LLP want to build new premises for Chief Trading Post, as well as a GP surgery, 40 homes, a learning disability residential centre and a public open space. The homes will include affordable homes and bungalows and the public open space would include “enhanced landscaping” to support wildlife and increase biodiversity. They have said any comments from the public survey will be “considered” as they put together a formal planning application for the work.

Kingswood constituency could be set to disappear THE Kingswood Parliamentary constituency is facing abolitionif new plans to redraw boundaries go ahead. The Boundary Commission for England has put forward plans to revise constituencies to try to make them more consistent in population size. The New Cheltenham, Kingswood and Woodstock wards in South Gloucestershire would be part of a new Bristol North East seat along with the Lockleaze, Eastville, Frome Vale and Hillfields wards in Bristol. The Downend, Emersons Green and Lyde Green areas of the Kingswood seat would join Filton & Bradley Stoke, while the Hanham, Warmley and Longwell Green areas would become part

of another new constituency, Keynsham & North East Somerset. The Kingswood constituency was created in 1974. It has swung between the two main parties over the decades; Labour’s Terry Walker was the first in the seat, serving from 1974-1979 when he lost to Conservative Jack Aspinwall. Rob Hayward held the seat for the Tories from 1983 to 1992 and Roger Berry was the Labour MP from 1992 until 2010. Conservative Chris Skidmore, who has been the Kingswood’s MP for the past 11 years and has held several Ministerial posts, declined to comment on the proposals. If approved, the new boundaries will apply from 2023.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps

Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy, whose seat would be retained but with redrawn boundaries, said it was possible another general election could take place before then. The changes are being proposed as part of a review aimed at taking account of population shifts to add seats to regions where the size of the electorate has increased and take them away from regions where it has declined. The South West would gain a total of three new constituencies if the plans go ahead. The proposals are open for comment until August 2 on the Boundary Commission for England reviews website, bcereviews.org.uk.

Plea after dog theft A FAMILY is urging dog owners to be vigilant after their pet was stolen – and eventually found dumped almost 100 miles away. Three-year-old French bulldog Coco was stolen from delivery driver Nathan Edwards's van when he stopped briefly at the Channons Hill retail park in Fishponds. The theft left Nathan, partner Hayley and their daughter Ashayah, from Kingswood, distraught. After 18 days Nathan received a call from workers at a recycling centre in Coventry who recognised Coco from one of the family's Facebook posts, which were shared across the country.

204 homes for Kleeneze site QUESTIONS about parking, affordability and antisocial behaviour were raised at a public meeting to discuss plans for the former Kleeneze site. Homes England, the government housing delivery agency, bought the site in 2020. Tesco had previously gained planning permission to build a supermarket on the plot bordered by Anstey’s Road, New Walk and Martin’s Road but failed to develop it. Homes England hopes to create an “urban lifestyles” housing development there. The 52 attendees at the Zoom public meeting were presented with some ideas of what the development could look like. It could include up to 204 houses and flats, live/work spaces, a business hub and an area that could be used for residential care for the elderly, health care or a creche. The suggested layout includes a village green in the centre of the estate including a play area, with taller buildings overlooking it to deter antisocial behaviour. Shorter buildings would be placed on the outskirts, to match the existing homes surrounding the site. The Sealtech site next door will continue operating, with its access moved to New Walk subject to planning permission. The possible development of the site prioritises walking and cycling, with around 390 secure bike spaces included. However, several questions were raised at the meeting regarding parking for between 350 and 450 new residents. Approximately 190 parking spaces are proposed at the moment, including 30 to 55 visitor spaces that could be used by people living in the surrounding roads or those wanting to shop on the high street. Not all properties would have an allocated parking space, while two-bed homes and flats might only have one parking space. Work will begin this summer on making the site suitable for work to begin. It currently has mineshafts and wells on it, as well as

derelict buildings that contain asbestos that need demolishing. Once work is complete, a developer will be sought and actual plans will be put through the formal planning process. Andy Ward of NEW Masterplanning, who put together the potential architectural design shown at the meeting, said: “This site really is a shocker. If I lived there I’d be really wanting this to happen.” His colleague, Tom Smith, said they had used the style of other buildings around Hanham, such as prominent gables, to influence the design so that the development would blend in. He said they focused on, “How can we create something on this site so it really feels part of Hanham?” The site is close to Samuel Whites and Hanham Abbots schools, as well as Hanham community centre. Consultation with the schools and other community facilities, such

as capacity at GP surgeries, will form part of the later application for planning permission. Construction work is likely to begin in 2023 and take two to three years to complete. Homes England’s development manager John Boutwood said: “A big thank you to everyone who attended our public consultation event. “All comments questions and comments about the draft proposals are gratefully received and we are considering all points that people are putting to us through the various feedback channels. “Our draft plans continue to evolve and we hope to be in a position to submit an outline planning application later in the year. Our aim is to bring forward a comprehensive redevelopment scheme that will revitalise this long-standing derelict, brownfield site and deliver much-needed new homes and commercial space in the centre of Hanham.”

Fabulous five make GB gym team MAJESTIC Gymnastics is celebrating five of its members being chosen to represent Great Britain. The three gymnasts and two coaches will all compete in the TeamGym European championship in Portugal in December. Majestic’s coach Stacey Godden, 29, from Hanham, has spent the past eight years working her way through qualifications to become a high-

performance coach. She will be heading up the GB mixed team unit. Fellow coach James Langley, 24, will be head of the senior mixed team at the championship, after moving to Bristol this year and joining the club. He is used to competing, having been selected for the GB team twice before. Gymnast Paige Phillips, 15, has been training at Majestic’s since the age of four and is now

a pupil at Sir Bernard Lovell. This is the first time she will compete for Great Britain. Larissa Royal, 17, is also making her debut for the GB team, training alongside studying for her A Levels. Katie Iles, 21, has spent 13 years at the club and this is the second time she has been chosen to represent her country. She begins a teacher training PGCE in September, so will juggle her training alongside her studies.

Majestic’s co-owner Candice Fry said: “It’s been an extremely long journey with lots of bumps in the road. “We cannot express how proud we are of your commitment and hard work over this past year. You truly are an inspiration to everyone!” The club is still waiting to find out whether redevelopment plans around their site will allow them to carry on in their current premises.

£30m plan for ring road traffic flow 'could just result in yet more jams' A THREE-year project to transform five roundabouts on the Avon Ring Road has been unveiled. The £30 million scheme would see three of the roundabouts – Siston Hill near Mangotsfield, Deanery Road near Warmley and Kingsfield, at Longwell Green – have new lanes built across the middle for through traffic, similar to those currently being built at the Woodstock roundabout near Cadbury Heath. The other two – Lyde Green roundabout near the Bristol and Bath Science Park and the Rosary roundabout near Emersons Green shopping centre – would have extra lanes added. South Gloucestershire Council has launched a 12-week public consultation the on plans, which it says are aimed at tackling congestion on the A4174 and stopping drivers using nearby residential roads as rat-runs. More traffic lights and entry lanes will be installed, some trees removed and replaced, and land at the edges of the dual carriageway used to provide extra space. No dedicated bus lanes are envisaged but sensors will detect when buses are approaching to give priority, while improvements for pedestrians and cyclists are also included. The council says that although the scheme on a five-mile stretch of the road involves widening, the intention is to encourage “necessary strategic car trips”, because the A4174 is the most suitable for commutes in the area. It says the scheme will improve air quality by easing congestion. However, it is not certain to go ahead, especially as the region’s new metro mayor Dan Norris, who has strategic responsibility for yransport in the region, has expressed misgivings. He said: “We have to look at the strong possibility that just widening roads simply causes increased journeys by car and does not alleviate congestion.” Green Party councillors in Bristol have also criticised the

trips to remain on the A4174, the most suitable road designed to accommodate longer distance car journeys, and to deter the traffic from re-routing through our local communities.” The council says that with "no intervention", congestion along the A4174 and nearby roads "will worsen due to planned local growth in the area". The plans are part of a wider package of improvements to the ring road proposed in the West of England Joint Local Transport Plan.

DEANERY ROAD ROUNDABOUT Deanery Road roundabout at Warmley will become a signal controlled "throughabout" with the A4174 widened to three ahead lanes and an additional lane for those accessing the A420. Traffic lights will be added to the westbound approach from Warmley. The existing pedestrian and cycle ‘toucan’ crossings will be retained on the western route, along with the pedestrian and cycle underpasses beneath the north and south routes. There will be a new retaining wall on the north-east approach from the north, with the existing cycle route being kept and modified. Modifications on Baden Road, to the ‘no through road’ turning point, are likely to be required to accommodate the new road layout on the south-western side of the junction. proposals, saying the money should be invested in public transport, walking and cycling and that adding car lanes to tackle gridlock is like “loosening your belt to cure obesity”. Commenters on the Voice’s Facebook page said it would be best to see how the Woodstock ‘throughabout” worked, once it is complete at the end of this year, before starting any similar projects. The council will use feedback from the consultation to form a business case to be sent to the Government for approval and funding, with work expected to start in phases from next year and last until 2025. It says the latest plans will “help the flow of public transport

through improved junction performance”. Cabinet member for regeneration, environment and strategic infrastructure Steve Reade said: “We want to reduce congestion and improve air quality in South Gloucestershire so have explored options to improve five junctions on the A4174. “The ring road is a key transport corridor in our area, providing a link between the A4 and Bath to the south and the M32 and the M4 to the north, and serves as a strategic route to avoid travelling through the Bristol urban area. “It also provides access to a number of local residential and employment areas. “This scheme is designed to encourage necessary strategic car

How to have your say The consultation is open now and closes on August 16. Full details, including how to participate in “virtual event spaces”, are available by visiting https://consultations. southglos.gov.uk/ A4174Improvements Paper copies and alternative formats of the consultation documents are available at the Kingswood One Stop Shop or by emailing transportservices@ southglos.gov.uk or phoning 01454 868000. While people are encouraged to engage remotely, face-to-face events will be held at Warmley community centre in Deanery Road, Kingswood, between 5pm and 8pm on Wednesday, June 30, and at Emersons Green village hall from 1pm to 5.30pm on Saturday, July 10.

Pond dipping pleasures safe for new generation

Chris Skidmore and members of the Community Refresh team at Willsbridge Mill

THE transformed pond and wildlife garden at Willsbridge Mill have been formally opened by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore and the leader of South Gloucestershire Council Toby Savage. A team of dedicated volunteers, led by Willsbridge Mill Community Refresh has carried out the refurbishment over the past nine months. It is hoped that the project will provide an excellent living environment for pond life such as frogs, toads, newts and a variety of invertebrates, as well as providing an opportunity for the discovery and appreciation of nature through activities such as pond-dipping, which has been a favourite pastime for decades for children and adults alike. Michael Gray, estate director of Willsbridge Mill Community Refresh said: “What we have always hoped to achieve is a difficult blend of conservation and ecology, and catering

for the community’s needs, which are very varied. What we hope is that the garden achieves both objectives, whilst protecting the rich heritage of the site and improving environmental and social benefits for the community. We are also always on the look-out for new volunteers with varied skills and gardening experience.” Mr Skidmore said: “It was a pleasure to formally open Willsbridge Mill’s new pond and wildlife garden. "Having grown up locally, I have visited many times over the years and I have especially fond memories of volunteering here whilst completing my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, many years ago. "I was therefore honoured to open the newly refurbished garden and pond, which will be an asset in furthering the already fantastic work that Willsbridge Mill does for the local community.”

MP praises vital community hub KINGSWOOD MP Chris Skidmore has visited community organisation Kingsmeadow@ MadeForever to find out about its work. The organisation has received a £433,000 grant from the National Lottery and the MP learned how it would be spent from the charity’s chief officer Catherine Sama and her team. The money, which will come over five years, will be used to support Kingsmeadow’s direct frontline services, and will help make a positive impact for all members of the community. The MP visited the Fisher Road building and heard about the activities and work the charity does in the community, and how it helps meet the needs of individuals and families, many of whom face multiple challenges such as mental health needs or substance misuse. The Community Hub offers a range of services including counselling spaces, employment advice, a community garden, outdoor sports court, café, recycling workshop, a second-hand shop, and an indoor sports hall. During the coronavirus crisis, the team had to pause several community events and programmes and had to quickly adapt to an increase in referrals for individual and families needing their services within the community. Mr Skidmore said: “I was delighted to visit Kingsmeadow’s great local Community

Hub and meet the dedicated team of staff and volunteers making a difference in the lives of many families and young people in the area. "Like many community groups they faced serious challenges during the pandemic and an increased demand for their services. This grant is fantastic news and will enable them to continue providing much-needed targeted support and wellbeing facilities for our community.” Catherine Sama said: “We are very

pleased by the visit of our local MP. His interest in our work is a great encouragement to our dedicated staff, volunteer team and to our community. On behalf of everyone involved in the Kingsmeadow@MadeForever Community Wellbeing Hub Project, we say Thank You for taking the time to come to K@ M4E Community hub to encourage, support and further motivate us as we serve our community”.

Swimmers in bid to improve water quality CAMPAIGNERS want to monitor and improve water quality at Conham River Park. If the area opposite Beese’s cafe is granted Designated Bathing Water Status (DBWS) then signage can be installed to update users on current water quality at the site so they can make an informed decision before entering the river. Currently swimmers, paddle boarders and kayakers can only guess at the water quality based on whether it’s rained recently or other users have got ill after being in the river. Sewer overflows regularly pump raw sewage into rivers, putting swimmers at risk of illnesses such as E.coli. The nearby overflow at Beechwood Avenue, Hanham, discharged sewage into the river for 164 hours across 78 days last year. Only one other UK river, in Yorkshire, has made it onto the DBWS list so far. The group is hoping that the rise in popularity of wild swimming when leisure centres were closed means this stretch of the Avon will be one of many rivers granted DBWS. Conham River Bathing Water group has formed to put in the application for DBWS, with a deadline for submission in October. Spokesperson Becca Blease, 31, said the 20 volunteers who’ve joined the group so far include a PHD student researching river quality monitoring, someone with a background in monitoring water quality and an

environmental policy expert. She said: “It’s early days but we’re hopeful that we will get DBWS because this is such a popular spot. “We’re in the process of gathering data on how often the river is used, counting the number of people taking part in different activities each day. “We’re also hoping to get support from councillors and do a full public consultation.” If their initial application is successful, DEFRA will run its

own public consultation and monitor water quality at the site for a year initially. The group hopes that, eventually, water quality in the river will be improved, which will benefit human users as well as wildlife. Ms Blease, who works at Bristol University as a research evaluation and impact specialist, has the skillset to pull together all the data collected about river use to support the application. She said: “I’m from the Wye

Valley originally so have been around rivers all my life. “As soon as I moved to Bristol I looked for somewhere I could swim and discovered this gem. It’s the only free place to swim close to the centre of the city. “I also love the history of the area, such as the fact that Eastwood Farm nature reserve used to be a landfill site.” The campaigners have published a website including details of how to get involved at conhambathing.co.uk

Men in Sheds earn Queen’s award A VOLUNTARY group set up to combat loneliness in older men has been honoured with an award from the Queen. Warmley Men in Sheds is one of just 14 groups across the whole of the South West this year to be given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, similar to an MBE. The group has been running for five years out of a workshop within Kingswood Heritage Museum and has links with a network of hundreds of similar “sheds” across the UK. Every Thursday, a group of up to 25 men meet to work together on DIY projects such as making display cabinets for the museum, making bat and hedgehog boxes for local wildlife projects, or simply to enjoy the camaraderie and chat. Mervyn Bishop, 84, who was one of the founders of the group, said they were very pleased to win the award. He said: “It’s quite fantastic really. We’re quite a modest group. “The member who nominated us joined us when he was suffering from depression and reckoned that the shed did him more good than five years of treatment from the NHS. “He was so grateful to us that he put in the application. “It’s a grand bunch here and most of

Warmley Men in Sheds group helps combat loneliness us have retired. Some people were feeling loneliness at home if they’d lost their wives, or wanted to have a bit of purpose after they’d retired. “We’re not here to treat mental illness, we’re here to prevent it.” One of the longest-running projects the group has been working on is dismantling used prosthetic legs so they can be shipped to countries in Africa where the prosthetics are

needed. Working with Bristol-based charity Legs4Africa, the Warmley Men in Sheds have dismantled over 1,000 legs. Their work has been so successful that the charity has now enlisted other Men in Sheds groups across the UK to help too. Throughout lockdown, the group kept members connected and smiling with regular newsletters filled with puzzles, jokes and news. The shed reopened last month and members are slowly trickling back as they start getting out of the house once more. Mr Bishop said: “We’re just a bunch of ordinary people who’ve learned how to hammer a nail or screw a screw doing DIY over the years. People can get involved as much or as little as they want and we only take on projects that our members fancy doing.” More recently, the group has started sessions for women too, meeting at the workshop on Mondays from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Sessions cost £3 to attend and anyone considering joining Warmley Men in Sheds can contact Mervyn on 0117 9676807 or email mervyn.bishop@yahoo.co.uk

Tackling 10 challenges for charity WHEN Alex Hamlin decided to raise money for charity to help his sister, he didn’t do things by halves. Rather than opting for a fun run or sponsored walk, he instead went big with his plans and booked in 10 different gruelling physical challenges over the course of 2021 and early 2022. His fundraising efforts will take him around the UK and rest of the world with girlfriend Claire where they’ll run marathons and ultra marathons, as well as walk or run up mountains. Alex, 34, who lives on the border between Kingswood and Warmley, has even done a free-fall abseil off the Orbital Tower in Olympic Park to kickstart the fundraising campaign. He is hoping to raise £5,000 for Caudwell LymeCo, which raises funds for Lyme disease research to improve testing and treatment on the NHS. He said: “My sister, Vicky, has been housebound since December 2016. After multiple hospital admissions and more hospital appointments than she could count, she was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease last year. “Lots of people have heard of Lyme disease but not many realise just how debilitating it can be if it is not treated with antibiotics in the first six weeks. “There isn’t much treatment available on the NHS for longerterm Lyme disease so my sister is having to fund everything herself. She’ll never be fully recovered, but is hoping to find a treatment that will improve things a lot.” Lyme disease is a form of arthritis caused by bacteria

Alex and girlfriend Claire are up for a host of challenges, including a freefall abseil at the Olympic park

Alex’s fundraising efforts • Yorkshire 3 Peaks run

• Chicago marathon

• Abseil from Orbital Tower

• Tokyo marathon

• Cheltenham racecourse half marathon

• Edinburgh marathon

• National 3 Peaks in 24 hours • Bristol half marathon transmitted by ticks. Vicky believes she was infected while travelling in India, but it can also be spread by ticks in the UK. Alex is no stranger to physical challenges, having already run three marathons in five weeks in 2019. He said: “We started making a list of challenges we’d like to do, then it kept getting longer. “We’re having to fit in training

• Boston marathon • 100km Coast to Coast ultra marathon runs before or after work and it does take up nearly all our time at the moment.” The engineer will also be joined by his brother, Chris, and Chris’s girlfriend, also called Claire, on some of the challenges. They are funding all their own entry fees and travel costs, so all money raised will go to the charity. Rosie Milsom, charity manager

at Caudwell LymeCo, said: “We are so grateful to Alex, Claire and the Hamlin family for taking on these amazing challenges in support of their sister and our charity. We are in awe of what they’ll be doing! “Unfortunately, Vicky’s story is more common than it should be among those who suffer from late-stage Lyme disease. “We need more accurate tests to increase diagnosis rates, better knowledge about Lyme disease within the medical profession, and treatments that cure patients at all stages of the disease. “This basic standard of healthcare should be available on the NHS, but so many patients have no other option than to go privately for costly treatments which don’t always work.” Alex’s fundraising page is at justgiving.com/fundraising/ alex-hamlin2

Witness plea after fire at community centre ARSONISTS damaged the Batch community centre in Cadbury Heath when they set fire to a bench outside. As well as the bench, the fire damaged a window, the community centre’s alarm system and an outdoor socket. The incident took place at night on 7 June, with residents spotting smoke coming

from the site in Park Road and emergency services attending. On its Facebook page the centre, which is run by Banjo Island Community and Sport Association, said: “We do have CCTV footage of those responsible and have been given names for the police to follow up on. “If the persons involved or people that

BMX track reopens after revamp THE BMX Pump track in Longwell Green has reopened following refurbishment work. The track, in Kingsfield Lane off Aldermoor Way, is open all year and is free to use. It had worn down over the years so the jumps needed topping up back to their original height. The track was also covered with smooth tarmac, rather than the rough surface it had before. This means it can now be used by scooters, balance bikes and skateboards, as well as bikes. Oldland Parish Council spent £15,000 on the work by BMX track specialist Architrail Velosolutions UK. Sadly within a week of reopening, vandals had graffitied the new signage and rubbish bin and police had to become involved. Cllr Steve Skidmore said: “The aspiration from local BMX enthusiasts and the parish council was to create a track that would

Part of the refurbished BMX track in Longwell Green be more inclusive and suitable for wider use. “People are very happy with the quality finish and the rejuvenation of the jumps and features. “The new signs and bins have been subjected to some mindless vandalism, but this has not swayed the enthusiasm of the local BMX community and people to enjoy

the track.” Once Covid restrictions are fully lifted, the parish council plans to have an official reopening event for the track. The work was the result of consultation with local young people and Creative Youth Network to find out what they wanted.

40k walk highlights mums’ mental health A HANHAM woman has raised more than £3,000 for a charity that helped her when she suffered from postnatal depression. Susannah Cake, 46, galvanised 40 people into action to walk 40 kilometres in one day around Bristol. The nine-hour walk took in much of the city including the Downs, Ashton Court, Southville and Arnos Vale. The participants were raising funds for Bristol charity Mothers for Mothers, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The group, run by volunteers who have all experienced and

recovered from depression or anxiety during or after pregnancy, provides a range of face-to-face and telephone support for other women. Susannah, a project manager in the civil service, said the charity’s support was invaluable after she gave birth to son Brendon nearly eight years ago. She said: “I don’t know what I would have done without them. I was going to standard baby groups and I felt like an alien. I was surrounded by all these women who were coping well, wearing make-up, whereas I just wanted to die. “My husband didn’t know

how to help me and needed to keep working. The GP just put me on really strong antidepressants that made me like a zombie but there was no other help. “I found the Mothers for Mothers website and decided to go along to one of their support groups, even though I was scared about meeting other women. “I remember one time pretty much falling through the door, handing over my child to someone and collapsing. One of the volunteers took me straight into a side room and counselled me for two hours, making me believe I was going to get through it. “I wanted to give something back to this amazing charity

which is why I organised the walk.” She picked one of the hottest days of the year in June for the walk and the group stopped every 10k at pubs to rest and rehydrate. Some walkers did the whole route, while others joined for different 10k stretches. Susannah’s husband, Andy, even turned up at one of the pit stops with boxes of ice lollies for everyone. They are hoping to reach a final fundraising total of £10k and are still collecting at localgiving.org/fundraising/ MforM40kfor40years Mothers for Mothers has more than just its anniversary to celebrate, having just been given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for its work.

Community kitchen opens A COMMUNITY kitchen for Kingswood and Hanham is celebrating a successful launch week. The BS15 community kitchen has been set up by volunteers to make sure that everyone in the community who would like a hot meal has access to one. It opened its doors for the first time in June and organisers were delighted to get 40 orders for meals immediately, as well as over 1,000 visits to the website. Residents pre-order though the We Are BS15 website or by phone the previous day, then collect them from Holy Trinity church hall or have them delivered to their house on Thursday and Saturday evenings. The meals are offered on a ‘pay as you can’ basis so everyone can access them.= Food on offer so far has included lasagne, chilli, pasta bake, sausage casserole and tagine. Vicky Robinson from BS15 said they had received lots of compliments about the food and the standard of the service so far. She said: “We’ve had all sorts of people use the service, including families with children who were struggling to find the time

to cook for them. “One woman who came had just worked a 14.5 hour shift, then picked up a meal on her way home when she was too tired to cook. “Potential volunteers have started to get in touch to find out more and we’ve seen lots of people make very generous donations when they buy their own meals, which supports us being able to hand out meals to everyone that needs it. “There might be a bit of a delay in getting back to potential volunteers but we’re very grateful for their enquiries and will reply to them as quickly as possible.” All food is being sourced as locally as possible, with fruit and vegetables coming from Mark Veitch and meat from Hanham Common Butchers. Donations have also come from Leidos UK, Asda Longwell Green, Hanham Traders and local councillors. The group, which Ms Robinson runs in conjunction with Reverend Beverley Charles of Holy Trinity church and a group of 15 volunteers, hopes to eventually offer tables in the hall where people can eat with their

Historical Heroes are a big draw

Martin Luther King

THE first Hanham Historical Heroes trail held during half term was a roaring success. More than 50 people created posters giving clues to a famous person from history. The posters were then displayed in the windows of businesses in and around Hanham High Street. At the end of the week, 25 people had correctly guessed all the clues, with Rachel Selwood winning the first prize of £50 from Hanham Dental. The winning poster was of Martin Luther King.

The Friends of Christchurch School usually run a scarecrow hunt but switched to historical heroes trail to allow for easier social distancing by running it over a longer time period. The event raised nearly £650 for the school and plans are already underway for the next event. Friends chair Abbey Wenban-Pike said: “We will be bigger next year and most people won’t be away.” The money raised will go towards refurbishing the school library and buying new computers.

159th Scout Group need your help WHILST the pandemic has prevented 159th St Aidans Scout Group from regularly meeting with the Young People of the group, it is hoping to return to its normal weekly meetings in September. During the last year the group has lost some important Executive Committee members and now need to recruit adult volunteers in order to keep the group going behind the scenes. The Committee plays a very important part in the running of the Scout Group, in fact, the Group could not function without it. Although the 'Executive' bit in the title makes it sound very formal, it is actually not like that at all! The Committee is made up of regular local people, some are parents of children from within the Group and others are people who want to give something back to their community. This means they have a good spread of opinion and ideas as well as a reasonable base of volunteers to spread the workload. There are several responsibilities the Committee has, some roles are hands on with kit, equipment and grounds maintenance. Other roles are more behind the scenes such as bookkeeping, fundraising, social media and other various administrative tasks, many of which can be done in the comfort of your own home. Volunteers get full training for their particular role and can undertake further training for their personal development if they wish to. Can you help? The Committee is open to anyone who has an interest in helping the group to function. To find out more about how you can get involved, come along on Saturday 10th July 2021 at 11am to our outdoor meeting at the Scout Hut grounds, Fir Tree Lane, BS5 8BJ, next to St Aidan’s Church. Hair today, gone tomorrow A HANHAM girl is having all her hair cut off to be made into wigs for children who have lost their own hair. Summer Taynton, nine, decided to donate her hair after watching a television programme about children who have had cancer and other illnesses that cause hair loss. She is growing her hair until it reaches the minimum length needed for wigs – 17cm – and is hoping it will be long enough on August 1 to cut off her ponytail. The hair will be sent to the Little Princess Trust, which provides free wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions. She is also hoping to raise money for the charity to help fund the making of the wigs and has presented to fellow pupils at Hanham Abbots junior school as part of her fundraising efforts. Summer said: “All of us want to feel that we look nice when we go to school or out somewhere but some children have worse things to worry about because they have serious illnesses such as cancer. This is why I’m raising money, and donating hair, to the Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for children so they can feel beautiful.” Summer’s mother, Skye, said she’d raised £230 so far. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/summer-rose-little-princess

Primary school's big food bank effort PUPILS at Samuel White’s infant school in Hanham have worked together to make thousands of donations to Kingswood food bank. Collections organised before Christmas and Easter each resulted in many car loads of food brought to the school to take to the food bank. Reception teacher Jo Edwards, 45, who has been at the school for 11 years, organised the collections after seeing the impact of multiple lockdowns on local families. She said: “I wanted to find a practical way we could help out so I so spoke to Peter Shears at Kingswood food bank to find out what they needed. “Lots of families at the school were keen to get involved and brought in over a thousand items of food each time I organised a collection. One parent even turned up with an entire car boot

Staff and parents with just some of the many donations from Samuel White Infants' collections for the Kingswood food bank full of food. “Some parents also organised collections at work then brought

the donations to school. “The food bank said it was the second largest donation they’d

received all year.” Donations included a range of tins and long-life food products, as well as cleaning products and seasonal chocolates. Ms Edwards said: “One thing a lot of parents said was that their children didn’t understand what a food bank was. “Peter Shears recommended a book to us called It’s A No Money Day which shows a visit to the food bank through the eyes of a child. “We spoke to the school’s Friends Association and they bought a copy for every class. The children have been really intrigued by it. “I wasn’t expecting to get such an enthusiastic response to my appeal. I’m now organising a third collection ahead of the summer holidays, so the food bank will have more lunch box-type things to hand out to families over the summer.”

Ban on street drinking A BAN on street drinking in Staple Hill High Street has been brought in after a rise in assaults, drug dealing and crowds of up to 100 people gathering. Police say the Public Spaces Protection Order, which is in force on Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm to 4am, is in response to increasing levels of anti-social behaviour in the area. Over the past two months there have been nine separate incidents of assaults and public order offences, police say. The order will be enforced by police officers, who can impose fixed penalty £100 fines. People can also be prosecuted under the Anti-social Behaviour, Police and Crime Act. Council licensing officers are working with pubs and bars to re-establish the area's Pub Watch and 'behave or be banned' schemes.

Virtual flying with the Red Arrows STUDENTS at Digitech Studio School flew in the cockpit with the Red Arrows thanks to Virtual Reality. The flight, in the trademark diamond nine shape, looping the loop and crossing one another’s path at exhilarating speed, was just one of the experiences sampled by 100 young people aged 14 to 17 wearing Discover Reality VRWEX headsets. The students, in Years 10 and 12, also took part in virtual police dog handling, fire and rescue services, photo journalism, media production and construction services. The activity came from a Social Enterprise company based in Lincoln, The EBP, which aims to help young people who are unable to have reallife work experience. Catrina Holmes, Careers & Employability Coach at Digitech, said: “Through experiencing the world of work using virtual reality, students are able to gain an insight into areas of work that they would not usually be able to experience in real life. The feedback from students in relation to their experience has been fantastic.”

Riding high! Oscar gets a date for op A LITTLE boy with cerebral palsy has finally been given a date for an operation needed to help him walk independently. Oscar Cridge, who turns five this month, will have specialist SDR spinal surgery at the Portland hospital in London at the start of next year. Parents Shaun, 38, and Emma, 32, have been fundraising tirelessly for over a year to pay for the £35k operation, which isn’t available on the NHS. They also need to cover the cost of the three of them staying in London for three weeks while Oscar has twice-daily visits to the hospital, as well as a wheelchair and two years of rehab in specialist facilities. A Rock 4 Charity event due to take place on 27 June at Bitton AFC should bring them closer to their £50k fundraising target. Shaun, from Barrs Court, said: “The operation lasts around six hours. They make the insertion by the spine and need to separate and

test all the nerves before they make the cut as once it’s done they cannot reverse it “Oscar will be in intensive care for a couple of days then moved onto a ward for a week.” It’s hoped he will be able to return to Emerson’s Green primary school in a wheelchair after six weeks. Until the new year, the family is focusing on building up Oscar’s strength to improve his chances of quick recovery from the operation. Shaun said: “Oscar has started horse riding with a one-to-one riding school and it has been absolutely amazing for his physio. “It is strengthening his core and legs and also seems to be sitting more upright on the horse, so it’s good for his back too. Oscar recently started going to Bristol Frame Football which he loves. It’s so nice seeing him to be able to kick a ball with other children, all using frames. It’s so nice that people put things on like this for children with disabilities so they don’t miss out.”

The watch that told more than just time Some argue that watches are thing of the past – that small timepiece wrapped around one’s wrist now replaced by digital versions on our phones, in our cars or cemented to the corner of our computer screens. But for collectors all around the world, nothing could be further from the truth. Take this recent auction result for example – an Omega watch with a black dial and brown leather strap. ‘Just grandad’s old watch,’ as the vendor called it. But this wasn’t merely just any old watch. The dial and rear plate were stamped with a Broad Arrow, which meant it was issued by the Government - usually for the armed forces. You can find similar arrows on anything military issue from the early nineteen hundreds onwards. In this instance the Broad Arrow meant that the watch was Royal Air Force issue. ‘Grandad’ is this case was very likely a pilot or navigator, flying just after the end of the Second World War. Issued only ever as a ‘tool’ rather than a fashionable timepiece, this watch would have been a vital instrument for any serviceman flying their plane. Records show that only 5,600 of these watches were ever ordered – not exactly a small amount, but considering that was some seventy years ago, one can only imagine how many were lost, destroyed, or broken between then and now. By 2021 standards these Omega watches are considered rare and there are likely less than 2,000 still in existence. ‘Grandad’s old watch’ attracted attention from all around the globe – watch collectors in America, Canada and even Australia were all scrambling to get their hands on this unique piece of history. After fierce bidding it eventually sold to a British collector for £1,600. As with many things in this world – value is so seldom based on the item itself, but rather the story and history behind it. In this case, this watch definitely told more than just the time!

Pupils write to UN on climate change THE environmental impact of different world religions was assessed by youngsters as part of their RE week. Pupils at St Barnabas primary school in North Common focused on how the customs of religions had positive and negative impacts on the environment. This included calculating the carbon footprint of the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, thinking up ways to make Hindu Diwali celebrations more environmentally friendly, investigating the Jewish custom of looking after trees, and finding out about the Christian creation story and what that means for the environment. As part of the week’s work, children produced artwork for

a Spirited Arts competition. Much of this was based on the themes of climate change, plastic pollution and other major problems on the planet. They also wrote letters about the environment that will form part of the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference in November.

Supporting charities is goal for new dad Dan A CHARITY football game and family fun day is being held on Saturday 24 July at 2pm. Bitton AFC manager Dan Langdon and former Bitton player Adam Linton are each putting together a team to play against each other on the day. The aim is to raise as much money as possible to be split between two charities: mental health charity Mind and Cancer Research UK. Mr Langdon, from Barrs Court, said: “My partner, Kerri, suffered from breast cancer two years ago and the support she got from the charity was phenomenal. “We’re doing this to give something back but also to do something fun for people to get involved in.” The day is sponsored by Bristol-based contamination

control flooring firm Dycem, where Mr Linton works, and will include a BBQ, bouncy castle, face painting, penalty shoot out and an evening disco. Mr Langdon will have his hands especially full on the day, as his first child is due to be born just a few weeks beforehand. He’s hoping the little boy might grow up to be a future Bitton player. He said: “Its going to be a bit of juggling act but hopefully it will all work out! We’re hoping Covid restrictions allow the event to go ahead and that the weather is kind to us, but regardless of weather we’ll carry on as we have covered stands.” Gates to the site on Bath Road open at 12pm and admission costs £2 for adults, with under 18s entering for free.

Lucy sets up football fixture for CLIC Sargent A CHARITY football match in Hanham aims to raise more than £1,000 for young people with cancer. The family event from 1pm to 6pm on 10 July is free to attend and will be held at the LA Clark Pavilion at the AEK Boko ground in Greenbank Road. Organiser Lucy Atkinson, 23, from Oldland Common, pictured, has played football for Boko since she was at primary school. She has organised the fundraising as part of a fitness challenge she is taking part in in October, the Battle Cancer CrossFit Challenge. All funds raised will go to Young Lives vs Cancer, formerly CLIC Sargent. Ms Atkinson, who works as a personal trainer in Brislington, has roped in 30 football players of all ages and abilities to take part in the friendly match, which will kick off at 2pm. Each player is donating £10 to the fundraising pot. Spectators can enjoy a BBQ, cake sale, games and a raffle with prizes including beauty treatments and gift vouchers.

Peter's skydive boosts charity

A GRANDFATHER whose 75th birthday present was a 15,000ft skydive has used it to raise £2,500 for charity. Peter Smith, from Downend, plunged from an aeroplane above Dunkeswell Airfield near Honiton in Devon. His wife Rachel and their four children clubbed together to buy him the present last year but because of covid restrictions and weather delays Peter had to wait until the end of May to finally make the jump. He was accompanied by sons Russell and Dorian. Peter, a former deputy head at both St George and Merrywood schools, said: "It was an amazing,

exhilarating experience, on a clear bright morning when you could see forever. "The initial free fall from 15,000 ft takes your breath away and sucks your cheeks hollow. When the main chute is deployed, you start to enjoy the amazing views and float gently to a soft landing. "There was a point in mid-air when the guy I was diving with said 'look over your shoulder and you'll see your son'. It was Brilliant!" Peter thanked all of the sponsors who helped him to raise a total of £2,500 – more than double his initial target of £1,000 – for children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent.

We have lift-off! Young runners' efforts are out of this world A SPACE-THEMED fun run has raised more than £1,500 for charity at Beacon Rise primary school. Children took on the challenge of completing some of the miles in the Moon Run, organised by a parent at the school. Merv Lawrence, whose eldest sons Charlie, nine, and Lenny, seven, are Beacon Rise pupils, is organising a team of people to collectively run the distance to the moon and back. He wants to raise more than £10,000 in total to split between four charities, and plans to run at least 2,000 of the 9,554 miles himself, all while wearing astronaut fancy dress. He came along to join in the

school’s running efforts, cutting a ribbon with his sons to start the run then running alongside the children in his space suit. The children ran through a balloon arch donated by Bonita Balloons and enjoyed bottles of water and ice pops at the end, donated by another parent. Charlie Lawrence said: “The day was so much fun. “I loved getting to come to school wearing a blow-up astronaut costume.” The money raised will be split between the Moon Run charities and the fundraising efforts of Reception teacher Cat Powell. She is taking part in the 100k Cotswold Way challenge to raise money for the mental health charity Mind.

CABOT Learning Federation's Big Run and Walk has raised a remarkable total of £21,773. The CLF, which runs 25 schools including King's Oak Academy, John Cabot Academy, Digitech Studio School and Hanham Woods Academy, was aiming to run or walk 11,622 miles in May - one for every child and raise the equivalent in funding. It more than doubled the financial target and is expecting the mileage target to be met by the end of the academic year. The money raised will be used to fund next year's Big Trip, takinge72 vulnerable children

for an outward bound adventure in Aberdovey, Wales. The CLF Big Run and Walk started as a running event that staff took part in annually at the Bristol 10k. This year’s event received some high profile backing, including athletics legend Roger Black, fitness guru Mr Motivator, Ben Smith (founder of the 401 Challenge), and actor Charlie Cox for their support. Kate Richardson, executive principal, said: “The Big Walk and Run has been an incredible success this year. We are so proud of our students and staff who have run and walked.”

Meadows pupils hold Race for Life CHILDREN at The Meadows Primary School in Bitton have raised nearly £2000 for Cancer Research by staying a Race for Life. The school council, supported by Year 5 teacher Mr Marron and his class, chose to stage the event because they knew that the usual mass Race for Life events could not happen because of Covid restrictions. The children dressed up in bright colours for the race and were awarded medals for taking part. Headteacher Joy Mounter said: “We were blown away by our school community support for our Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research. The children have raised a total of £1848 and had great fun while getting their daily exercise. We are so proud of the children and their families for their generosity to this great cause."

Hanham Photographic Society has been continuing online during Covid-19. We have been unable to include any of members' pics this month due to shortage of space.

STEM WORKSHOPS: IKB Academy in Keynsham, which specialises in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), is holding workshops this month to enthuse teenagers . The computing/ design events, organised in same school bubbles to be Covid-safe, involve Year 9 students in designing a car and then using microbits to programme the car around a track. IKB is open to students aged 14 to 19, with entry in Years 10 and 12. Spaces are available for September and the school is running one-to-one meetings – which can be virtual – to talk through the opportunities. www.ikbacademy.org.uk

Minibus fleet gets an upgrade TWO new minibuses will help Kingswood Community Transport to run a better, more environmentally-friendly service. Residents of Kingswood, Hanham, Longwell Green, Bitton, Downend and beyond will all be able to benefit from the boosted service if they have physical or cognitive disabilities that make it hard for them to access standard public transport. Running since 1984, the organisation has grown to a size where it was transporting thousands of people a week before the pandemic. Although the service has had fewer users during lockdown, when many of the community groups to which it transports people were closed, it is still managing to operate at 50 per cent capacity. All minibus drivers are volunteers, offering their services for between half a day and five full days a week. The new Peugeot Boxer minibuses were handed over by South Gloucestershire Council to Kingswood Community Transport’s operations manager, Aaron Breddy. He said: “Now we have these new minibuses, we’ve been able to sell two of our oldest minibuses. That’s given us some extra funds, but will also save us a large amount on maintenance costs. The new minibuses are more environmentally friendly and have lots of features such as automatic tail lift, automatic

side steps and air conditioning. I think all the drivers will be fighting to drive them at this time of year!” Once Covid restrictions lift, it’s hoped the service can once again extend to offering day trips, garden centre visits and pub lunches, as well as the core dial-a-ride service. Mr Breddy said: “There’s a misconception that everyone who uses community transport is elderly, but that’s not true. “We have lots of people in their 20s who might have various reasons that make it harder for them to get out and about, such as mobility problems or learning difficulties. We take people to clubs and activities, to the supermarket, to doctors, really anywhere they need to go. “South Gloucestershire Council has been very generous in that it’s kept funding us at the normal level throughout the pandemic, which has enabled us to survive.” As well as being funded by the council, Kingswood Community Transport receives a £22.50 annual fee from around 1,000 people registered to use the service, as well as a small fee of £2 to £3 per journey. These are the last of 15 new minibuses provided to community transport services across South Gloucestershire since 2019. The £740,000 funding for all the minibuses came from the Local Growth Fund, administered by the West of England Combined Authority.

Want to borrow a pair of shears? BRISTOL’S first Library of Things has opened on Kingswood high street. The idea is that people can borrow the things they need, such as garden tools. The library is open even Saturday from 10am to 2pm and is run by Share Bristol. Library volunteer Kate said: "It was really exciting to open our doors and start meeting people and explaining what we’re about. There’s been so much interest from passers-by and we had visits from people who were interested in volunteering, had things to donate or who just popped by to wish us well." The first items to go out on loan was a power strimmer, followed by hedge shears. If you have a space or a garden that needs a tidy, the library can also lend secateurs, rakes, a garden shredder or a lawnmower.

The new Library of Things operates from a shop in the High Street If you want to become a member of Bristol’s first Library of Things you can find out more

Celebrating a centenary of education MORE than 200 old photos are on display at Kingswood Heritage Museum to showcase a centenary of education at King's Oak Academy. The exhibition, which opened last month, tells the story of the school’s history since it opened in 1921 on Brook Road. Founded as Kingswood Secondary School in 1921, the school became Kingswood Grammar School in 1927 then Kingsfield School in 1968. Since 2011 it has been known as King’s Oak Academy. Museum joint curator Alan Bryant was the ideal person to pull together the exhibition: he lives next door to the school, and his brother, children and grandchildren were all pupils there. He said: “One of the best bits of the exhibition is we’re showing video footage of pupils at the school from the 1930s to the 1970s. “It’s surprising how many left-wing politicians were former pupils when you look through the list of alumni. “People who have visited the exhibition so far have donated

some of their own things related to the school. We even have a 1926 school jacket on display next to the modern uniform of the school, which I got from my grandsons.” Photographs include ones of famous past pupils, who count among their ranks physicist Sir Bernard Lovell, planetary scientist Colin Pillinger and Richard Scudamore, former CEO of the FA Premier League. They also cover special events at the school, such as a visit from astronaut Helen Sharman. The original, wooden school building burned down in a suspected arson attack in 1976. The modern building was then completed in 1977. The exhibition will run to the end of the museum’s season in November and is open on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2-5pm.

Sign brings historical flavour to station AN ICONIC reminder of Keynsham’s past has gone on display at Bitton station on the Avon Valley Railway. It's an old enamel sign dating from the 1930s, advertising the Fry's Somerdale chocolate factory. It was bought last year by Avon Valley volunteers George Colbourne and Eric Miles and put in place on the replica W.H. Smith kiosk, where it greets visitors as they enter the station platform. It is thought the sign was originally located at Keynsham railway station, one on each platform, although so far no photographic evidence of this has come to light, despite contact with the local history group. The sign is imposing, measuring 12ft across and nearly

6ft high. It is marked with a number of children's doodles of steam engines, which lends

credence to the idea that the sign was on the Keynsham station platform. It is possible

that schoolchildren penciled on these drawings while waiting for the train home or when trainspotting. The sign is a fitting companion to the railway's Fry's 'Sentinel' shunter, which has been fully restored over the past 10 years. Last year the engine went to Heritage Painting of Heywood in Lancashire to be professionally painted, lettered and lined out. The coronavirus pandemic put paid to any operation of the locomotive during 2020. But it is scheduled to be in steam on 11 occasions this year. *If anyone has information about the history of the chocolate factory sign, please contact Avon Valley Railway via the ‘contact us’ form on their website at https://www. avonvalleyrailway.org.

n MEMORIES Kingswood Bowling Centre

The Top Rank Bowl in Kingswood was the first bowling centre in the West Country. It opened in the former Odeon Cinema. The building opened in 1938 as the Ambassador Cinema, and was damaged by a German mine in December 1940. The cinema was closed for several months, reopening early in 1941, and changed its name to the Odeon in 1944. The Odeon closed in 1961 and was converted into a 24 lane bowling centre, equipped with Brunswick lanes and machines, and opened as the Top Rank Bowl in September 1961. The photograph shows the front of the building in 1965, with an attendant Dalek in the foreground! The Top Rank Bowl closed in March 1969. The building was sold, demolished and replaced by a Safeway supermarket.

n SPORT KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB COACHES at Keynsham Bowling Club welcomed newcomers to their green in Keynsham Park so they could try their hand at the sport. The Bowls England initiative prompted 22 people to sign up for an hour slot on the day during a glorious May bank holiday weekend. Sisters Karina and Karen, from Keynsham, came to the 10am slot with their husbands Richard and Simon and their cousins Fiona and Glenn, from Exeter, who were visiting for the weekend. “We thoroughly enjoyed it” seemed to be the consensus as they mastered the bias on the woods aiming for the jack. At 11am the coaches were joined by the Chocolate Quarter Six - Pat, Mick, Janet, Carol, Isobel and Roger - who after bowling sat in the sun enjoying a drink from the bar. In the afternoon it was the turn of Don and Pat, who moved to Keynsham about four years ago and appeared very interested in

Welcome to newcomers

Coaches from Keynsham Bowling Club gave newcomers a hand considering playing a new sport. All were offered a series of coaching sessions, and it will be interesting to see how many take up the offer. Our men were drawn at home to Long Ashton in the first round of the National Top Club Competition. There were five different

disciplines – the 2 bowl fours, 2 bowl triples, 3 bowl pairs, 4 bowl singles and 2 bowl singles. Unfortunately Keynsham only won on two and therefore look forward to doing better in 2022. The first round of the Lloyd Trophy fixtures were played, with our men being well beaten away to

Alveston. In the Bristol and District League played on a Thursday evening, things are looking much rosier for our men. The A team are top of Division 2, with the B team top of Division 3 and the C team in third place. Our ladies have been rolling up on our green on most Tuesdays and Thursdays as most of their competitive fixtures have been cancelled. They have, however, played one Mendip League game, when they convincingly beat Fosseway and won on all three rinks. A number of clubs have decided not to bowl so far this season, but as we move into July this should change and more league fixtures will take place. However, due to the disruption caused to fixtures, promotion and relegation have been cancelled this season, and clubs will start next year in the same divisions they are currently in.

FRYS BOWLING CLUB Thursday May 27 Following a pointless 35-52 defeat at home to Avonvale, Frys looked to halt their losing streak during their trip to Bradley Stoke. Scores: Rink 1: 15-16; Rink 2: 14-14; Rink 3: 10-20; Frys 39-50 Bradley Stoke (1-9). Thursday June 3 After a run of 4 straight defeats, Frys welcomed Begbrook Green 'A' to a sunny Somerdale. Frys were the winners on the night with 8 points from the 54-40 win but remain bottom of the table. Scores: Rink 1: 1617; Rink 2: 23-12; Rink 3: 15-11; Frys 54-40 Begbrook Green 'A' (8-2). Tuesday June 15 Frys made the trip to Division 1 side Weston Bath in the 1st round of the Bristol and District League Lloyd Trophy. Bath took control of the game with rinks 1 and 2 soon pulling away from Frys. Frys skip on rink 2 saved multiple shots to keep the score respectable. Rink 3 were able to make a late comeback eventually winning the rink on the final end, but it was Weston Bath taking their place in the second round. Scores: Rink 1: 9-19; Rink 2: 6-24; Rink 3: 17-15; Frys 32-58. Thursday June 17 After a 2-point 33-46 defeat at Ardagh, Frys welcomed Keynsham 'A' in the first local derby of year. The game started close on all rinks with neither team gaining the upper hand. That changed after halfway as Keynsham pulled away on rink 3, giving them the advantage. With rinks 1 and 2 still close Frys stayed in the game. A late 4 on rink 1 for Keynsham left Frys with too much to do. Rink 2 were able to close the game out giving Frys 2 points on a night that they will feel could have been better. Scores: Rink 1: 9-17; Rink 2: 15-11; Rink 3: 6-19; Frys 30-47 Keynsham 'A' (2-8). • We are open to new members.
