Community centre: business as usual CONCERNS that Longwell Green Community Centre is set to shut down have been quashed by trustees. They insist there are no plans to close the centre in Shellards Road or to turn away any groups that use it, despite mounting fears in the community over its future. It is unclear how rumours started but they may be linked to the imminent departure of the centre manager Alison Jordan and bar manager Scott Janes. Trustees say it was a coincidence both found other jobs at similar times and they did their best to persuade the duo to stay because of their glowing track record at the centre. Trustees say the centre is not in debt, although because it receives no outside funding there is no surplus money either. They say they are looking at "commercial opportunities" to ensure the centre continues to serve the community but would not be drawn as to what those might be. Turn to Page 2

the very near future. We cannot stand still and are working hard to replace them so that we can keep on moving forward." Trustee Neale Saunders said: "The centre has no debt and pays its way within its budget, but this

leaves no money for maintaining the large building which has been added on to many times over the years since it was first built in 1949, of which its heating and electric can be costly and are not very efficient.

"The centre and all the sports fields/open areas receive no funding from the council or authorities. It is self-funding and only survives with the help of the volunteers that give up many hours to keep the centre going. "We are looking at all of the commercial opportunities to make sure that the centre, which is well used by many children and adults of all ages, will be here for the next 70 years to serve all of the families in this growing and expanding area, in the same way it has for the last 69 years going back to when Longwell Green was just a village." Mr Gibbs, who is also chairman of Longwell Green Sports FC seniors, said: "In short - we will not be closing the doors. So if anyone wants to come and help us with whatever time or skills they have, they should come on down, they will find that the doors are open, not closed."

Tip traffic traps us in our homes, say residents PEOPLE living near the Mangotsfield recycling centre say traffic queuing to enter the tip keeps them stuck on their estate for hours at a time. Roads around the Carsons Road Sort It centre are regularly jammed, both with people in cars waiting for a place and recycling lorries queuing to unload. Demands for action were made at the South Gloucestershire Council meeting on May 16, where a 173-signature petition calling for action was handed in. Stewart Hadley-Clarke, who lives on the Siston Hill estate nearby, shared pictures of the queuing traffic with the Downend Voice after telling councillors the surrounding roads could no longer cope. He told the council: “There have been occasions where residents have been stuck in the estate and couldn’t move for up to four or five hours. They are not isolated incidents. The reduction in size of black bins

from 240 to 140 litres seems to have added to the problem. Previously I have only ever needed to go to the tip two or three times a year. Now I have to go to the recycling centre every other week, as I’m sure other council residents have as well. have witnessed fly-tipping, road rage and near-misses as a result of the way the site is managed.” Presenting the petition, Siston ward Conservative councillor Ian Adams said: “It’s not just a seasonal thing, it’s happening during the week when we have the recycling centre

lorries queuing up trying to access the weighbridge at about 2.30 most weekdays, which coincides with the school pickup. At weekends residents are trying to access the site as well as trying to access their homes, in a queue which stretches down to the ring road.” Mr Adams said a slip road was needed to take tip traffic off the road and a number plate recognition machine checking that cars were registered needed to be moved, as it currently scans vehicles only when they are already on the site.

Rodway ward Labour councillor Michael Bell said a webcam designed to show people how long queues were at the centre had not been working for two years. Cabinet member for communities Paul Hughes said: “The Mangotsfield Sort It centre has experienced a number of busy periods recently and we apologise for any traffic disruption. We are working to reduce the issues of queuing and are encouraging residents to make use of the other three sites when Mangotsfield is busy. Mr Hughes said extra parking had been installed last year and the council was working with contractor Suez to get the webcams working. He added: “There is no evidence that the introduction of smaller bins is contributing to the queues at Mangotsfield. There has not been any significant increase in black bag waste being deposited at the Sort It Centres. ”

Cressida's a roaring success CHILDREN from 11 primary schools visited SBL Academy to hear a talk by the authorillustrator Cressida Cowell. Cressida wrote the bestselling children’s series, How to Train Your Dragon, and is touring the UK to promote her new novel, The Wizards of Once, a magical adventure story of the warring worlds of Wizards and Warriors. Nearly 600 children were welcomed by SBL principal Dean Anderson and many were inspired to hear about Cressida’s writing career, the inspiration behind her books, and her childhood spent on a remote island off the coast of Scotland. She also enthused staff and students alike about her new campaign #FreeWritingFriday,

which encourages children to write creatively and independently. Several of the schools that attended decided to initiate #FreeWritingFriday, in which each child can write whatever they want for ten minutes. Cressida said: “Every child should have one notebook that no one corrects, in which the child writes and draws

purely for the joy of it. Children are naturally creative and imaginative thinkers, but can get put off writing by the corrective red pen. In this one notebook, spelling, grammar and neatness should be completely irrelevant – what’s important should be the ideas, and that it’s fun.” SBL librarian Laura Richards, who organised the visit, said: “The students that attended the

event were impeccably behaved and asked some really insightful questions. We were very proud of our SBL Student Librarians and Book Club members who helped out and represented our school. They also got the opportunity to come and chat with Cressida while she signed books, and ask her questions about her work. We all had a fantastic time.”

New library unveiled at Hanham Woods

A NEW library has been unveiled at Hanham Woods Academy. The facility will play a central role in the school's new literacy and reading strategy. Some English lessons will take place there to develop students’ reading skills. It will also be a quiet place where students will be able to work and read. Reading clubs will be developed and students can take books out and read them for the academy’s ‘Drop Everything and Read’ strategy, which happens in period four each day when students read in silence for 10 minutes. Recently, Hanham Woods became involved with the one hundred million minutes reading challenge, which encouraged students to read more than they had done previously. These strategies are being credited for having a positive impact on students as literacy scores improve across the board. Principal Steve Kneller said he would like to thank the Friends of Hanham Woods which donated £1,500 and Blue Sky Property Solutions which donated £300 towards the new library. He said: "It has been a personal mission for me to make sure the new academy library was launched. Now up and running, this means that the library will play a central significant role in the development of literacy and reading of all our students."

Lifesaver Lawrence stands down after 35 years A LIFESAVING instructor from Hanham is to step down after 35 years of teaching survival, rescue and swimming skills to children. Lawrence Geraghty, 69, started swimming and lifesaving over 45 years ago, making the move towards teaching some ten years later. The decision to step down comes at a turning point for Lawrence as he bids farewell to his latest group of Rookies, who have qualified from the course with distinction awards after five years with him. The Rookie Lifeguard programme, which is the junior award scheme from The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) UK for 8-12-year-olds, has been running at Kingswood Active Lifestyle Centre for some time now, with classes also taking place at Bradley Stoke and Thornbury Lifestyle Centres. In recognition of his many years of service, RLSS UK has awarded Lawrence with one of their highest honours – an "Honorary Life Member" status. And while Lawrence’s retirement from service marks the end of an era for the Rookies, the programme is set to continue following the appointment of Louise Towler. Louise is a qualified Rookies instructor, lifeguard and duty manager at Kingswood and is excited about taking over the helm for the Rookies. She has plans to grow the provision and currently has vacancies for new Rookies to join. Reflecting on his decision to step down, Lawrence said: "It’s an emotional wrench to stand

Lawrence Geraghty handing over to Louise Towler. down from the Rookies after such a long time. I was supposed to fully retire a few years ago, but somehow, I just couldn’t do it! When I realised that my latest group were just about to qualify, I knew that the time was right for me to retire. "It’s been particularly sad to see this group move on as they’ve been with me for so long. They qualified from the course a few months ago but refused to leave, so we entered them for a higher award to keep them going. The Rookies can be like Marmite for some children, but this group have really picked it up and it was a pleasure to see them with their certificates at our last session. "Some of the children have already asked if I’ll come back, but I think now is the right time

to pass the role onto someone else so I can spend some muchpromised time with my wife." Martyn Hinam, centre

manager at Kingswood Lifestyle Centre, said: "The Rookie awards continue to provide children with a wide range of exciting and rewarding activities that help them to make friends and learn skills that could be essential to saving someone’s life. "Lawrence’s contribution towards the Rookie sessions has helped to make a real difference in the local community and we’re really sorry to see him step down. While his teaching days may be over, we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Lawrence in Kingswood and we hope that he continues to pop in while enjoying his well-earned retirement." Rookie sessions with Louise take place on Wednesday evenings from 4-6pm. Children are welcome to attend a free initial assessment, which can be organised by contacting the team at Kingswood Lifestyle Centre.

Valerie and Geoffrey set for diamond day

The couple's wedding day, June 7, 1958

IT was love at first sight when Valerie and Geoffrey Wall first set eyes on each other. And now, more than 60 years later, the happy couple from Hanham are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary. They met in 1956 at Verrecchia in Bedminster when out with a group of friends. Valerie, 80, said: "There was a crowd of us and Geoffrey asked me if I'd like to go out. I said 'Yes, ok!'. Our first date was at the pictures down near the centre." The pair tied the knot at St Mary Redcliffe Church then moved in with Valerie's mum in Redcliffe in order to save up ÂŁ500 as a deposit for a house. They bought their first home in Marion Road, Hanham, and lived there for 18 years before moving to a bungalow in Bellamy Close, also in Hanham, where they have now been for 42 years. The couple have one son, Mark, 57, and three grandchildren, Daniel, 25, George, 24, and Harry, 22. Valerie spent 32 years as a home care worker for the council and retired 16 years ago. Geoffrey, 85, worked at the printing firm Marden's before taking a part-time job. He now keeps himself busy by making wooden

Valerie and Geoffrey, pictured in their garden

garden ornaments such as wheelbarrows and bird tables. A keen baker, Valerie is never happier than when she's in the kitchen making butterfly cakes for her family and friends. To celebrate their 60 years of marriage on June 7 they will have an 'open house' for family and friends to pop in and have tea and cake. At the weekend they have booked a roast dinner for 22 family members at Bitton Railway. When asked what the secret to a long and happy marriage is Valerie said: "To keep out of his way! No, I'm only joking - we've always helped one another and never go far from each other."

St Barnabas CoE Primary in Poplar Close, North Common, has launched its Little Stars nursery for children aged two to four and already places are being snapped up. This means the Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ school can offer an allthrough education for children aged two to 11. And on Saturday, June 16 from 10am-noon and 1pm-3pm the school is opening its doors to local families to let them find out more and meet the team. Little Stars is run by a qualified teacher, supported by highly experienced nursery staff. Head teacher Claire Hill said current funding means working families can get up to 30 hours a week paid for by central government.

This represents morning and afternoon sessions from Monday to Friday completely paid for, with just a small charge for lunch. The school also accepts workplace childcare vouchers and for families not in work, 15 free hours (five half days) are available. Mrs Hill said: “Little Stars is a fantastic set-up. With it being part of a primary school, the children

have access to so many facilities including our forest school area, library, scrapstore playpod and much more. “It is a play-based learning environment which creates a love of learning. “The sessions are flexible to fit in with each family’s requirements. “The set-up also means the transition from nursery to primary

school can be so much smoother as the children know the building and the wonderful staff here at St Barnabas. “And it doesn’t matter if your child will be going to a different primary school at age five – our commitment to their love of learning and making of friendships does not change.” The school also offers extra hours with sessions beginning at 7.30am. For over threes, a professional childcare company offers extended sessions until 6pm. Mrs Hill added: “We want all local families – and also those who commute in and out of Bristol along the nearby ring road – to come along on the 16th to have a look at what we do. We would love to see you there.” For more information, visit www.stbarnabasprimaryschool. co.uk , email office@ stbarnabasprimaryschool.co.uk or call 01454 862233.

Resident disturbs armed intruders POLICE are appealing for witnesses and information after a householder disturbed two men entering his Kingswood home. It happened at about 3.30pm on Tuesday May 15 in Southey Avenue. The householder came downstairs to find two men in the hallway. Both men were said to have been carrying poles or bats, but no threats were made towards the householder and they made off immediately on being disturbed. Nothing was stolen, no one was hurt, and the men made off in a small metallic blue van. One man was described as about 5ft 9ins tall, stocky and wearing a blue hooded top, a

tan baseball cap, black jogging bottoms. He also had a bandana over his mouth. The second man was of a similar height but slim. Officers have carried out house to house enquiries in the area and information has been sent out through Neighbourhood Watch. n NEWS WHEN staff at a Hanham care home realised the Royal Wedding coincided with the home's own 30th anniversary, they decided they would make it a day for all to remember. The Beeches, in the High Street, was transformed with bunting and flags while residents and staff gathered around television screens to witness Harry and Meghan's romantic nuptials. Food and drink was flowing and entertainment kept everyone in a party mood. Residents were visited by councillor Matthew Riddle, former South Gloucestershire Council leader, and the CEO of Care and Support West, a representative body for those involved in social care. The family-run residential care home opened in 1988 with Janet and Mervyn Windows and their daughter Julie at the reins. For the past 10 years the couple's grandson Matthew has been manager and runs it alongside wife Donna and mum Julie. Matthew said his

"The home was decorated with bunting and flags throughout including outside to highlight the Royal Wedding and to show the local community that we are celebrating this event.

Open your eyes to Cataract Awareness Month THERE’S no need to live in the shadows of cataracts. Cataracts are the world’s leading cause of blindness and surgery to remove them is the most regularly performed operation in the UK with figures showing that more than 300,000 cataract operations are carried out in England each year. As part of Cataract Awareness Month, which runs throughout June, eye experts are encouraging people to know the symptoms and to seek advice if they think they are developing cataracts. Mr Phil Jaycock, a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Spire Bristol Hospital, explained that although cataracts are common, they can be treated successfully to restore vision. He said: “Cataract Awareness Month gives us a good opportunity to make people aware of the symptoms and reminds people of the importance of eye examinations.” “A cataract is a clouding of

the eye's natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. Basically, the lens focuses light into a sharp image on the retina, which relays messages through the optic nerve to the brain. If the lens is cloudy from a cataract, the image you see will be blurry.” Cataracts develop slowly and hence the symptoms are gradual in onset. Symptoms include blurred or misty vision, glare around lights, poor vision in low light and faded colours. You may experience difficulty with reading and driving, especially in low light. If you wear glasses, you may feel your lenses are constantly dirty and need cleaning. In addition to causing problems with your vision, advanced cataracts may make it difficult to assess conditions that affect the retina and optic nerve such as diabetes and glaucoma. Whilst most cataracts develop as a result of ageing, cataracts may be inherited, occur as a result of trauma, using medications such

as steroids or occur secondary to diabetes. “Surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial one. In the past monofocal replacement lenses were predominantly used. Monofocal lenses are able to improve distance vision or near vision, but not both. More recently, multifocal lenses that can achieve both near and distance vision as well as ‘toric lenses’ that can correct astigmatism have been used,” explained Mr Jaycock. Prior to the surgery, scans for evaluating the dimensions of the eye are carried out which help the surgeon to precisely calculate the power of the replacement lens required. The surgery usually takes less than 20 minutes and is performed, in the vast majority of cases, under local anaesthetic. In the largest study of its kind, Mr Jaycock published a paper on the outcomes of 55,567 cataract operations. This work has updated National and International

benchmark standards for cataract surgery. Patients are usually home within a few hours and an improvement in vision may be noticed within the first days after the surgery. It is advisable to take a week off work and most people can resume their normal day to day activities within two to four weeks. “The latest innovations in cataract surgery allow a rapid restoration of sight and allow patients to enjoy their hobbies and day-to-day life with reduced dependency on glasses and contact lenses,” added Mr Jaycock. To find out Spire Bristol Hospital are inviting the public to a free patient information evening on Monday June 25. The small presentation will be delivered by Mr Jaycock, who will talk on blurry vision and cataract treatment. To book on to the event please call 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com

n LETTERS Floodlights not practical at Greenbank Road THANK you for your article highlighting the problems residents are facing at Greenbank Road playing field (Hanham and Longwell Green Voice, May 2018). The installation of floodlights on community grass pitches tends to result in overuse and this leads to pitches that are not fit for purpose. The drainage at Greenbank Road is already poor with many of the current seasons matches already postponed. Is it good practice to to spend thousands of pounds on this project when the level of play can only be restricted by this basic issue? it is disappointing that AEKBOCO have reopened negotiations to install floodlights at Greenbank Road playing fields, without taking any of the FA guidelines highlighted two years ago into consideration. Along with many other concerns raised at the time, the basic FA guideline that there

17

n NEWS should be 'a minimum of 65m from the perimeter of the pitch to the nearest residential building' cannot be adhered to at this site. The proposed addition of a fenced spectator stand and permanent dugouts will turn this into a mini football stadium, which can never be practical within such a limited public open space. It will restrict community use and could result in further cases of anti-social behaviour. Parking on local side streets is already a serious issue at weekends, with not all visitors using the car park available, although the club disputes this. With the addition of new homes on adjoining land this can only lead to further traffic problems on the narrow residential roads. It should be noted that South Gloucestershire Council has just signed a S106 agreement with Bellway Homes Ltd and Square Bay LLP as part of their planning application contributing £142,593.19 'towards provision and/or enhancement of outdoor sports facilities at Greenbank Road Playing Field' also £71,503.19

Scarecrow sleuthery 'towards play area provision for children and young people at Greenbank Road and/or Court Road'. This is a LOT of money to spend on such a restricted site. South Gloucestershire Council has seriously let down the community and AEK-BOCO without properly preparing guidelines for use of all their community open spaces as promised in 2016. It is obvious that Greenbank Road does not adhere to the criteria recommended by the FA to support the proposed development at this site. Kim Madan Local resident

Volunteers dig in to transform pre-school garden

VOLUNTEERS at Christchurch Pre-School in Hanham are making strides in creating a new-look garden. Dads, granddads, staff and committee members all dug in to create a complete makeover to the floor area of the existing garden. They were given guidance and support by experts at Hanham Gardening Company who helped dig, wheelbarrow, flatten and re-lay bark until the new-look garden floor was revealed. The next part of the makeover is scheduled for June 2-3 and includes building a base for a new shed and stage area for the children, a cover for a sandpit and beginning a mini allotment area. Kind donations include compost and plants from Goldings in Hanham and a small greenhouse thanks to the committee's treasurer. The pre-school would welcome further donations so they can build on their good work. Please contact chairperson Katie at christchurchpreschooltrustees@gmail.com Christchurch Pre-School is also currently part of the Co-Op Community Fund and will benefit from shoppers selecting it as their favourite local cause. Jessie May charity wins Lottery grant KINGSWOOD-based children’s hospice charity Jessie May has received £10,000 of funding from The Big Lottery Fund. The charity, which provides nursing care at home for terminally ill children and young people, has been awarded the grant for their ‘Let’s Talk Transition’ programme of work. The programme is dedicated to supporting life-limited children who outlive their initial prognosis and need help in the transition period from Jessie May to adult services, across North Somerset, North East Somerset, Wiltshire, Bath, Bristol and South Gloucestershire. The funding will enable ‘Let’s Talk Transition’ to bring young people together for a number of events where they can connect with each other, share stories, and be part of a supportive community. The programme will also run graduation days to

Fiona and Helen from Jessie May celebrate the National Lottery Awards for All funding mark the achievement of those transitioning from Jessie May’s care. The National Lottery grant will also help pay for training on a range of issues around how to support young adults, as well as a number of support visits for families whose children are about to transition to adult care services. These

visits could include arranging an introductory visit to day care centres, help with filling out forms, financial advice and signposting to other agencies. Jessie May CEO Chris Roys said: "Thanks to advances in medical technology, more lifelimited children are outliving their initial prognosis and transitioning to adulthood.

Jessie May has seen a marked increase in the number of young people reaching 19, the age of transition, with six young people due to graduate from Jessie May in 2018 and 31 young people on our caseload aged 14-19 who could graduate in the next five years. "This funding means we can support more young people who are approaching the age of transition and ensure these young adults are able to fulfil their full potential, within the limitations of their health. "Jessie May continues to make a huge difference to children and their families’ lives, giving the vital support needed at absolutely no cost." The Big Lottery Fund distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes. Last year it awarded over £164 million to projects across the UK supporting children and young people.

n BOOK REVIEW

Nautical but not so nice - tales of the nineteenth century

Walking With Plato:

OUR May topic was “Every Boy Will Join The Navy”, featuring HMS Formidable, launched in 1825, an 84-gun warship of the Royal Navy. Shirley Hodgson described the deprivation facing many Bristol families in the mid 19th century. Many children were destitute and in need of care and education. Clifton Industrial School for Boys and Stanhope House for girls had been established and in 1869 Henry Fedden acquired HMS Formidable from the Royal Navy to provide a home and training for penniless and orphaned boys at Portishead. When the ship rotted away she was replaced by the magnificent National Nautical School on Nore Road, Portishead in 1906 with financial assistance from the Wills and Fry families. The school closed in 1982 and the building was eventually converted to apartments and is now known as Fedden Village. On June 5 our topic will be “Killed In A Coal Mine” (the Kingswood coalfield was a dangerous place. From the eighteenth to the twentieth century, there are records of countless injuries and deaths either in the coal mines or in connection with them). Surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the Civic Centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www. kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. Annual subscription is only £20.

by Gary Hayden

A Philosophical Hike through the British Isles

If you like travelogues but prefer something not too taxing this is a good choice. That may sound odd when you see the sub title of this book, but don’t be put off by the “philosophical;” element. The book is written by journalist and teacher Gary Hayden. Gary and his wife set off to walk Britain “downhill” (from Scotland to Cornwall). Neither are particularly experienced walkers, in fact Gary confesses early on to being a nonwalker, but both have an element of wanderlust in their souls and have recently returned to Britain from spending several years teaching in Japan. However they do enjoy a challenge and elect to walk as much as possible by the scenic route, even if this adds some miles to their journey. So what is the philosophical element? Well Gary is a keen reader of the great philosophers before turning in most nights. (These are generally spent in their tent apart from the occasional recuperative night of luxury in a real bed). He records his thoughts on life as they walk but this is all done with a light touch. In fact the daily entries are largely short and pithy (he records the whole journey in 224 pages). So if you would like a flavour of what it is like to make this journey but don’t the time or inclination to do so then this could be the alternative for you.

New sports ground is ready for action LONGWELL Green Sports Football Club are set to open their new sports ground in Lyde Green over the coming weeks. The ground on Howsmoor Lane and will be used by over fifty of the club’s junior teams for three to 18 year olds, as well as three senior teams who are part of the FA’s Chartered Standard Community Clubs. The club, which was created in 1966, is professionally run and won the Chartered Standard Community Club of the year in 2014, 2015 and 2017 and also the Bristol Post Community Club of the Year in 2017. John Gibbs, spokesman and chairman of Longwell Green Sports Football Club seniors, said: “We have been working together with GreenSquare [the management company] for over two years, and we are very pleased to be officially contracted to run and maintain the sports pitches and the first class sport pavilion at the Howsmoor Lane

sports ground. “Longwell Green FC have been in desperate need for football pitches to cater for all our teams and we have an excellent record for being a family friendly, community based club, but also competitive with some excellent coaches.” The club’s junior section chairman, Neale Saunders added: “We will be here to give the community a club that they

can visit, be involved with, play for and hopefully support - it’s the start of a new chapter.” The club has already had lots of interest from Lyde Green residents before a ball has even been kicked on the new site, including Craig Pellow who has set up a veterans’ team that play matches on Sundays and will be playing at Howsmoor Lane from next season. Paul Griffin said: “We already have over 20 children who live in Lyde Green and have joined the boys and girls section, and we have received some very positive feedback from their parents which is very encouraging.” The club have players from all local areas and are keen to hear from anybody who would like to come along to one of their initial training sessions. They are also on the lookout for volunteers to help run the club, and at present they need a team secretary for the reserves team, a physiotherapist for the first team and somebody to be a treasurer. They are planning to have an official opening, where they will be inviting local residents and a celebrity from the world of football – watch this space for more details! n NEWS

Four arrests after vulnerable elderly woman is targeted FOUR women were arrested in Hanham after a vulnerable elderly woman was spotted withdrawing money from a number of cash machines. Police are now urging people to look after at-risk relatives and friends following the serious incident in Kingswood on Monday May 21. Neighbourhood PCSOs Andrew Lagana-Forbes and Andrew Bray became concerned after spotting an elderly woman from their beat, who they knew to be vulnerable, withdrawing cash from a number of ATMs. PCSOs Lagana-Forbes and Bray alerted colleagues and were able to direct officers to Hanham High Street, where four younger women were arrested on suspicion of fraud. All four were later released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Kingswood Neighbourhood PC Matt Clement said: "I’m really proud of these two PCSOs. Their knowledge of their community has helped us ensure the safety of a vulnerable woman in her 70s and we’ve made her family and support services aware. Our investigations into the incident continue. "I would ask anyone who has a vulnerable relative or friend to check in with them regularly. Criminals can sometimes take advantage by pretending to befriend them, in order to steal. Just popping in for a cup of tea or making a phone call can actually help to keep people safe." Bath Ales builds IT might be named after a city down the road but Bath Ales is a South Gloucestershire success story. And the Warmley-based brewer is going from strength to strength, having just opened a state-of-the-art new brewery which will enable it to produce around 14.5 million pints per year. Its best-known beer, Gem, can be found in hundreds of pubs and bars in the Bristol area but the opening of the new Hare Brewery is enabling it to brew more varieties, including its first lager, Sulis, and an IPA named after Lansdown Hill. The new brew house has been built from scratch at the company’s headquarters in Southway Drive, where about 40 people work. It will be open to the public, meaning beer enthusiasts can go on a tour to find out more about how their tipple is brewed - and people can also just pop in for a pint at the Tap Room. The multi-million pound investment by owners St Austell Brewery has doubled Bath Ales’ brewing capacity so that it can produce 50,000 brewers’ barrels of beer - close to 14.5m pints - a year. It includes fermentation tanks which can hold 28,800 pints at a time and the capacity to fill 7,000 up to bottles per hour. The brewery even has a water treatment plant to produce the pure soft water needed for its new lager. Brewing director Roger Ryman, who oversees brewing and production at Bath Ales

and St Austell Brewery, said: “From the very start of the project we’ve all shared a clear vision for Hare Brewery - to build one of the region’s most technologically advanced and fully bespoke brewhouses. “We hope the new brewery will play its part in shining a light on the vibrant south west beer scene.” Roger said the project had enabled him and his colleagues to “build a perfect brewery” from scratch. Senior brewer Darren James, who has been at Bath Ales for over 15 years, said the Hare Brewery had been “built from the ground up”. He said: “We’re quite literally opening the doors to the brewhouse, in that beer fans will be able to see it for themselves – we’ll be holding regular brewery tours, which means that people can see our new kit and visit our tap room to taste our beers at their freshest.” Bath Ales’ old brewery in nearby Crown Way is also set to gain a new lease of life, after being sold to the London Beer Factory. The Tap Room will open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from June 7, opening from 5pm-8.30pm on Thursdays, 3pm-8.30pm on Fridays and 11am-5pm on Saturdays. Tours of the brew house will be available on the same days but must be booked in advance by calling 0117 947 4797 from May 29. For more information visit: www.bathales.com

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM EVENING WI The May meeting took on a more serious note from the usual meetings held by the branch by giving the opportunity to ordinary rank and file members to make their voices heard at a national level on a matter of national significance. The meeting debated a resolution which had been selected from many put up for consideration to go forward to the final vote at the Institute’s Annual Meeting in Cardiff on June 6. The resolution is: Mental health matters "Mental health matters as much as physical health. The NFWI urges all WI members to recognise the importance of parity between mental health and physical health. and take action to make it as acceptable to talk about mental health issues as much as physical health issues, and to lobby government for better support for mental illness." Members took the resolution very seriously and heard a wide spectrum of views during the evening. These

included contributions from someone who had worked in the mental health sector and also from a member whose family had been personally affected. At the conclusion of the debate members voted unanimously in favour of the resolution going forward to the AGM for adoption by the Institute. Following the debate, the mood was lightened as the evening was rounded off with the opportunity for members to have a good old-fashioned chin wag over a glass of wine, cheese, grapes and nibbles.

HANHAM AFTERNOON WI Our May meeting could almost have been held outside; it was a beautiful warm sunny day. But down to business, firstly we discussed our resolutions for the forthcoming AGM of the Women’s Institute. Following this, some of our members informed us that they had recently completed knitting a quantity of baby hats for Bristol Maternity Hospital. Our speaker this month gave us the history of the SS Great Britain, many of our members could relate to the vessel returning to Bristol as it was towed on a pontoon along the River Avon on the final leg of its journey from the Falkland Islands to Bristol where she was launched in 1843. The ship’s history now shares stories of her passengers and many sailings to America and Australia, if you not been down to Bristol Docks recently, Brunel’s SS Great Britain is well worth a visit soon.

Members visiting the Houses of Parliament Some time ago our chairlady popped into the offices of Chris Skidmore MP and asked if it would be possible for Chris to arrange a visit for our group to visit the Houses of Parliament. His helpful and obliging staff later confirmed that arrangements would be made for us. We booked a coach and

set off at 7.30am on Monday May 21 arriving just in time for our visit. We were met in Westminster Hall by our helpful guide who offered to take a picture of our group as memory of our visit. We gathered in Central Lobby where the TV presenters send their reports, then

the parents of Mark Sims promoting the book they have published from Mark’s blog about his fight with cancer, PS I have Cancer, which was very uplifting. This was followed by a discussion and vote on this year’s resolution, Mental Health Matters, which is to address the disparity between funding for mental and physical health. The members then enjoyed tea and cake! Next month we will be getting physical with ‘Dance & Chair Exercises’ with Philomena Connelly. Upcoming events include a trip to see Bridgewater Carnival and a cream tea. Our regular Tea & Chat sessions are held on the first Thursday of the month at 2.30pm at Chapel Coffee Shop, Longwell Green. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. followed our guide into the Robing Room where the Queen puts on the Imperial State Crown and her ceremonial robes before making her way to the House of Lords when she opens Parliament. This led us into the House of Lords and then to the House of Commons, everyone remarked how surprisingly small both Houses actually are. At precisely 1pm a loud voice informed us, "Would everyone clear the House". Security officers with sniffer dogs needed to check the chamber before allowing MPs in for the afternoon session. With a little free time left we were able to take a walk as far as Downing Street before meeting our coach home. Hanham (Afternoon) WI meets the second Monday of every month at Hanham Community Centre from 1.304pm. Sue Heath

n NEWS AN aspiring racing driver from Emersons Green has set his sights on winning the 2018 Castle Combe Saloon Car Championship. Matt Parr, who works as a mechanic for Dick Lovett in Cribbs Causeway, started racing two-stroke go-karts when he was 18. After four years, he then moved into sprint racing, where the aim is to drive a road car around a track or circuit in the quickest time possible. In 2017, Matt was offered the chance to do a test in a race car by Grant Motorsport, who are based in Warmley. Following this, he joined the team and was then entered into the 2018 Saloon Car Championship at Castle Combe circuit, which is based on four classes from A to D (depending on the power of the vehicle). Matt races in a specially modified Citroen Saxo in class D, which he pays to rent and have maintained for him by the team. After testing in February and March, he was then put through to race twice in April and May,

It’s full speed ahead for Matt

where he finished second and first in class D, and also achieved the fastest overall lap time in both races. Speaking of the championship and his ambitions, Matt said: “The final of the championship

n NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT

June, 2018

n SPORT

Frys Bowling Club news round-up

We’re over 100 years old and researching our roots. Can you help us please? Armistice Day this year commemorates the end of the First World War and we feel it would be honourable to research those who started our Association some four years earlier. Our organisation now consists of seven allotment sites within the St. George area; possibly these individual sites were created much earlier than 1914 before coming together. But who were the founder members? We want to find out. Whilst the ‘Dig For Victory’ campaign started at the beginning of the Second World War allotments undoubtedly played an important part during the Great War too, primarily to help keep families fed. Quite likely, many plot holders of the early 1900’s would have volunteered to join the Army as thousands of others did, many as we know sadly never to returned.

We will be delighted to hear from anyone who can help us piece our history together. For example, could any readers living in the area be relatives of our early members and offer us information, perhaps a photograph even? Did those plot holders as we suggest join the military for active service? And if so,

where did they serve? There could be lots of fascinating revelations. Families of those we want to contact could have moved away, emigrated even, so if anyone has contact details of where we can spread our search we will be extremely grateful. We’re also interested to find out more about our allotment sites and their surrounding areas. Hillside Allotments in Kenn Road has adjacent modern buildings, a care home and doctor’s surgery, what occupied this land previously? Similarly, the same site on an opposite border was until only a few years ago a field and stables and now are now school playing fields. Could these stables have been once used in connection with a business, who knows? Our offices were originally on our site known as The Farm which is situated between Summerhill Road and Crews Hole Road. Its name alone is a good indicator perhaps that this land was at one time essentially for agricultural use and could possibly have been abandoned for reasons unknown before being turned into allotments. St. Aidan’s Allotments in Nicholas Lane is now the home of our offices and shop and we know these premise formerly belonged to a Chrysanthemum Society. Indeed, it was here at that time we’ve discovered, that one lady tells us her wedding reception was held there. Intriguing information we hope you will agree but we are sure there is much more we can learn of our past, if you can help us please get in touch, thanks.

Thursday April 26: Frys opened their Bristol and District League Division 2 season with a home game against Keynsham 'A'. The visitors soon took the upper hand and never looked back. Only rink 3 offered any resistance falling by one shot as Frys failed to score any points losing 69-28. Scores: Rink 1: 7-28, Rink 2: 8-27; Rink 3: 13-14; Frys 28-69 Keynsham 'A' (0-10). Monday April 30: The first game of the City and County of Bristol Bowling Association Clarence Davey saw Frys welcome Bristol Arrow to a cold Somerdale. Frys had the better start with 3 rinks pulling out early leads. Bristol Arrow started to pull back into the game. but Frys were able to keep their lead at a comfortable margin eventually taking a 93-64 win to advance to the second round. Thursday May 3: Frys travelled to Page Park 'A' in the second game of the league season. Frys took and early lead, but Page Park closed the gap at the halfway point. Page Park continued to pick up shots and held their lead with rink picking up 2 points for Frys from the 46-36 loss. Scores: Rink 1: 14-18; Rink 2: 16-9; Rink 3: 13-12; Frys 36-46 Page Park 'A' (2-8). Thursday May 10: Frys returned to Somerdale for their third league game with Avonmouth the visitors. 2 rinks remained tight throughout the contest, but a 14 point win for Frys on the third rink helped Frys to the match win. The other rinks also came out on top giving Frys 10 points from the 55-31 win. Scores: Rink 1: 21-7; Rink 2: 18-13; Rink 3: 16-11; Frys 55-31 Avonmouth (10-0). Thursday May 17: Last Thursday Frys travelled to Knowle 'B'. The game started badly for Frys with rink to failing to score in the arly ends. Rink 3 saw Knowle pull away which gave Knowle a decent lead going through the halfway point. Rink 1 saw Frys pull away to even the deficit a bit. Rink 2 slowly pulled back into the match, which closed the game right up. The overall score were tied with only 2 ends left, with Rink 2 now tied with one to play. With Knowle picking up a singe to take the lead again on rink 1, Frys were only able to pick up 1 shot on rink 2, which gave Frys the rink win, but was only enough to tie overall, at 44 each, with Frys picking up 6 points to sit 7th in the table after 4 games. Scores: Rink 1: 2-8; Rink 2: 17-16; Rink 3: 20-7; Frys 44-44 Knowle 'B' (6-4). n VETS' ADVICE

999: what pet owners need to know Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Amie Britton RVN Highcroft Veterinary Group

WHETHER your pet has ingested a poisonous substance, been run over by a car or injured whilst out on a walk, emergency situations are frightening for everyone concerned. If your pet has an accident we always recommend that you call your vet immediately for help. However, forewarned is forearmed and knowing what to do in an emergency could make all the difference and even save your pet’s life. The most common injuries we see are broken bones, poisoning, seizures and collapse. Basic first aid training teaches owners how to safely move their pet after an accident, stop bleeding, bandage the affected areas, deal with seizures and most importantly how and when to seek help. The hazards that pets are exposed to increase during the

summer months with insect bites (even snake bites occasionally) and heatstroke coming into play. For instance, did you know that dogs only sweat through their paws and their tongue and are therefore much more likely to suffer from heatstroke than we are? If you would like to learn more

about basic first aid for cats and dogs, we are hosting an evening on 7th June at our head office in Whitchurch, Bristol. For more details and to book your place simply contact the practice on 01275 832410.
