Bold move to secure future SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has bought Kings Chase shopping centre and car park in Kingswood in a £10 million deal it promises will enable it to bring new life to the high street area. The announcement of the purchase solves the mystery of the “significant” property deal, at the heart of a £25million transformation of the town centre, which the authority has kept under wraps since February because of commercial sensitivity while negotiations concluded. It intends to carry out a consultation this summer over its "masterplan: for Kings Chase, which is set to include homes and leisure facilities as well as shops. Council leader Cllr Toby Savage said: “I am really excited to be able to confirm that we have completed the purchase

of Kings Chase shopping centre and car park, which has been the subject of many months of hard work alongside the development of a masterplan. We are extremely ambitious for the future of Kingswood and this acquisition is critical to our ability to deliver something truly transformational." MP Chris Skidmore said: “I have been a proud advocate for the council’s Future High Streets Fund business case and was delighted to see the Government co-investing in this."

A Lidl bit bigger THE old NatWest bank building in Hanham High Street is set to be demolished to allow the neighbouring Lidl supermarket to expand. The owners haven’t yet decided when work will be carried out, but planning permission has already been granted by South Gloucestershire council. The expanded supermarket will include a larger entrance area, more warehouse storage and freezer storage space, and a bakery. Extensions will be built in front of and behind the existing shop. The NatWest branch has

been closed for three years and there had been speculation that the building would be turned into flats. A Lidl spokesperson said decisions are yet to be made on when the work will take place and whether the current store will close temporarily to allow for the building work. She said: “We are currently exploring plans for the extension and will let the local community know of any updates as and when they become available.” The Hanham Lidl branch is only a mile from the Lidl in Aldermoor Way, Longwell Green.

n LONGWELL Green Post Office will close for more than six weeks while extensive refurbishment is carried out at the premises at Tesco Express at Bath Road. The branch will close on Thursday May 27 and is due to reopen on Saturday July 1. The existing postmaster will continue. Meanwhile the Tesco store will close on Sunday May 30 and reopen as a temporary shop on Wednesday June 16.

Academy's headteacher moves on HANHAM Woods Academy will lose its principal as he leaves for a new job. Steve Kneller is leaving to become deputy CEO of a Wiltshire multi-academy trust from September. He has worked at the school for just over five years and has been at the helm through turbulent times. Ofsted placed the school in special measures 18 months after he took on the headship, finding it to be “Inadequate” in all areas. The report stated: “Senior leaders are failing to provide pupils with an acceptable standard of education. “They have not done enough to improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment. “As a result, pupils’ academic achievement has been held back for too long.” However, by 2018 inspectors found the school was improving and just before the first 2020 lockdown it achieved a “Good” rating. Inspectors said: “Parents recognise that the headteacher has led a revival in the school’s fortunes.” Mr Kneller said: “Obviously others will judge my success or otherwise but I am very proud that Hanham Woods Academy was

judged Good by Ofsted in November 2019 having been placed in special measures two years earlier. “Steering the school through a pandemic over the last 18 months, whilst hugely challenging, has also been rewarding in that the academy and community as a whole are emerging stronger as a result. “Both of those successes and all the others would not be possible without the brilliant team of teachers and academy staff, the support of a very strong trust in Cabot Learning Federation, the loyalty and support of parents but most of all the amazing young people who attend the academy. “They give me energy every day, they make me laugh and smile, and occasionally cry! “Every day brings new highlights and new memories that I will take with me. I will miss the academy and the whole community terribly. “The opportunity to take up a post in Wiltshire as deputy CEO in a small trust is very exciting. To work and support headteachers of, initially, seven schools will be hugely rewarding I am sure.” Mr Kneller has been vocal in the past about the lack of funding for South

Gloucestershire schools and urged members of the public to ask the council to distribute more of its money to schools. The school, which replaced Hanham High School in 2014, hasn’t yet announced a successor to Mr Kneller.

n NEWS LABOUR'S Dan Norris has won the West of England Metro Mayor election. The former MP beat Conservative Samuel Williams by 125,482 votes to 85,389, a majority of just over 40,000 votes, after second-preference votes were counted. Green candidate Jerome Thomas was third, with 54,919 votes, while Liberal Democrat Stephen Williams was fourth, with 39,767. The count went to a second round after no-one received an overall majority in the first round of voting. However, Mr Norris had a lead of more than 10,500 votes after first preferences were counted, receiving 84,434 votes to Mr Williams' 72,415. In the second round, where second preference votes from Green and Lib Dem voters were added to the front runners' totals, Mr Norris received another 41,048 votes to Mr Williams' 12,974. It meant Labour gained the mayoralty from the Tories, who had won by 4,377 votes in 2017. The Metro Mayor leads the West of England Combined Authority, which is responsible for strategic development of business, skills, housing and transport in the region. Mr Norris said: “It’s a huge honour to be elected as Metro Mayor, for an amazing part of the world that I am so proud to call home. "I will show the difference an active Metro Mayor makes for our region. “This role is about collaboration and I will be a Metro Mayor who listens carefully and works cooperatively.

Dan Norris celebrating with his dog Angel at the ss Great Britain after the results of the Metro Mayor election were announced "I’m determined to hit the ground running, with a Jobs and Skills summit in my first 100 days and my Green Recovery Plan. “I also know that the pandemic has been tough and, as we build back, invest in jobs and our high streets, we must learn key lessons. "Together we can create a society where we keep looking out for each other and value what’s truly important.” After the result was announced, Mr Williams paid tribute to his supporters and volunteers, saying: "Thank you for all your support over the past months. It did not go the way we had hoped but we did an outstanding job." The overall turnout in the West of England Combined Authority (Weca) area was almost 37% – higher than four years ago, when it was less than

30%, and higher than the metro mayoral contests in Liverpool, Greater Manchester, the West Midlands and Tees Valley. Mr Norris benefited from the increased turnout in Bristol, where elections for the city council and Bristol Mayor were also taking place on May 6: he received more than 50,000 votes in the city, while Mr Williams' 28,000 in Bristol was behind the Greens. Mr Norris was 143 votes behind the Conservative candidate in B&NES, where he was the MP for the now-abolished Wansdyke constituency from 1997 until 2010. In South Gloucestershire Mr Williams was more than 9,000 votes ahead of Mr Norris, where they received 28,693 and 19,168 first-preference votes respectively. As well as his pledges on

jobs and the environment, Mr Norris's manifesto included a requirement for 35% of all new homes to be "genuinely affordable", an increase in spending on housebuilding and the creation of a 'homelessness taskforce'. He has also pledged to drive through improvements to transport, including investigating mass transit and bus franchising, smart ticketing and tap-in, tap-out payments, improved rail services and walking and cycling options. Mr Norris started his political career as a Bristol city councillor in the 1980s and also served on Avon County Council in the mid-90s. As an MP he was appointed an environment minister by Gordon Brown in 2009 but lost his seat in the 2010 General Election, when he the redrawn and renamed North East Somerset constituency was won by Conservative Jacob ReesMogg. Conservative candidate Mark Shelford received 34.4 per cent of first preference votes and was elected after second preference votes were counted, beating Labour’s Kerry Barker. Former Cotham councillor, Cleo Lake, secured 16.4% of first preference votes for the Green Party and came third. Heather Shearer polled 13.3% for the Liberal Democrats and independent candidate and former deputy to Sue Mountstevens, John Smith, received 11.7% of first preference votes. He is only the area’s second PCC, taking over from independent Sue Mountstevens, who stepped down after nine years in the role. ARSONISTS attacked the old Grange school site in Warmley last month, leaving a blaze that required firefighters from 11 stations to put it out. Four decades of selling newspapers AFTER 38 years of 3am starts, Pete and Janet Long will have earned a lie-in during retirement. The Warmley couple, who turn 74 this year, are selling up their newsagent business in Regent Street, Kingswood. They have run World of Cards & News for 22 years, and ran another newsagent nearby before that. Both businesses opened at 4.30am, seven days a week and the Longs worked there together every day except Christmas Day. Their only time off was a few days when refurbishment took place six years ago. Pete said they were sad to sell up, but they were both suffering from ill health and their son, Wayne, worked in the building trade so wasn’t in a position to take on the business. He said: “We’ve been one of the busiest newsagents in Bristol with 750 customers a day at least.

When we open at 4.30am each day, there’s nothing else open so people come in here for all kinds of things. “We absolutely love the work. We like talking to the customers, many of whom have been coming here for donkey’s years and we consider to be our friends. “Things have changed a lot over the years. A lot of the young people don’t buy papers any more because they read it online, but I think that will drop off in the future because it’s nice to have a real paper to read. “It’s a hard life running a newsagent and there’s very little profit in it but all the people you meet makes it worthwhile. We’ve had funny times, good times and tragic times. “We’ll still be coming to Kingswood often after we close, doing all our shopping and seeing our friends.” He said over the years they’d

Vintage trains take a starring role EAGLE-eyed viewers might have spotted the vintage trains at Avon Valley Railway making a cameo appearance on BBC One. The trains were used for the filming of romantic comedydrama The Pursuit of Love, based on Nancy Mitford’s 1945 novel set in the interwar period. Adapted and directed by Emily Mortimer, who also appears as a supporting actor, the series tells the story of the eccentric Radlett family. Linda, played by Lily James, and Fanny, played by Emily Beecham, come of age and head off into the world in the pursuit of love and adventure. Scenes set at Victoria station, on a train to Oxford and on a Continental train journey all made use of the train carriages and platform at Bitton. Avon Valley Railway’s commercial business director, Mark Simmons, said the filming took place over three days in September but they have been sworn to secrecy until now.

He said: “One of the things you can’t tell when you watch the series is that we’re not actually using a steam train at all in it. “Steam trains are great for long journeys, but not so good when you’re stopping and starting every few minutes to reset the scene. “So there’s actually a diesel

engine on the front of the carriages. The production team put fake smoke on the track to give the impression of a steam engine pulling away.” An open-plan carriage, currently used by Avon Valley Railway as a dining coach, was fitted with false walls and décor to make it look like the inside of

a French train carriage for the Continental parts of the story. Night time scenes were achieved by blacking out the carriage windows temporarily. Mr Simmons said he’d been watching the series and spotting the sections filmed at Avon Valley Railway. He said: “Whereas when we see the platform in real life we see feet and sky, when they film it it’s a really tight window around the actors so our platform really could pass for London Victoria.” The positive news is welcome for Avon Valley Railway at a time when they’re still reeling from a break-in where thieves stole heritage train parts that are impossible to replace. In another setback for the railway, they had to push back their reopening after lockdown from April to the end of May. Over-running engineering work, coupled with concerns from South Gloucestershire Council, led to the delay.

Hope for Majestic as plans reconsidered DEVLOPERS hoping to rebuild Longwell Green trading estate have gone back to the drawing board with their plans. The original plans submitted to South Gloucestershire Council would have seen the end of Majestic Gymnastic Academy’s premises on the site. But now plans are being amended before they are put to the planning committee at the council. Majestic co-owner Michelle George said they were hopeful the new plans might include them. She said: “We’ve now had a conversation with the developer and they’ve told us what the new rent would be if we were allowed to stay on the site. “It’s four times what we pay now so we’d have to rejig the business completely, but it might be possible. “The good thing is we had the planning officer from the council come out to see what we do. He was able to see different groups training and all the coaches and young coaches that work here and would have their

jobs put at risk if we lose our building. “Our main worry now is that our current lease is up in September. If we get to then without a planning decision being made, then that won’t be good for us.” Nearly 800 people have written to South Gloucestershire Council to object to the original planning application, which would see the loss of the facility used by more than 1,000 youngsters every week. A petition has gathered 2,500 names and Sport England, which spent £50,000 kitting out the facility to train specialist TeamGym athletes, has also objected to the application. Gary Parsons, planning manager for Sport England, wrote: “Sport England considers that the proposal conflicts with our national policy on the loss of sports facilities. “Should redevelopment be unavoidable, an equivalent (or better) replacement facility should be provided in a suitable location. “Without appropriate mitigation for the sporting facility, the proposal is likely to put the long-term future of gymnastics at the site at risk.”

Rob Hardy from British Gymnastics also contacted the council to object to the plans. He wrote: “The club is a growing successful club specialising in TeamGym and are one of the leading clubs in the country in this specific discipline. “The club contributes to improving both the physical and mental wellbeing of the young people who participate in gymnastics and other forms of physical activity and the value of this should not be underestimated, particularly coming out of lockdown.” Ms George said Majestic were in discussion with the council about other potential homes for the club, including the sport block at the former Grange school nearby, but didn’t yet know who would fund the move if it became necessary. The original plans from developer West Midland Authority Pension Fund proposed replacing most of the warehouse-style buildings alongside Aldermoor Way and Marsham Way with work space, retail or leisure outlets plus a drive-through restaurant or a hotel.

Pulling some strings HAVING to rummage through boxes of belongings is very much part and parcel of an auctioneer’s job – and what makes that really exciting is that one never really knows what they might find lurking in the bottom. A few weeks ago, whilst peering through a box that had been bought in from a deceased estate, I discovered something very rare indeed – an early Pelham Puppet. Those of a certain age may remember seeing Pelham Puppets for sale in toy shop windows, either strung up with limbs akimbo, or neatly displayed in their yellow boxes. Made in Marlborough, Wiltshire, they were a popular Christmas and Birthday presents throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In my line of work, they are quite frequently encountered, and some can be worth a decent sum of money if in good condition. But what I saw peeking out of said box the other week made my heart flutter – I could just see the words on a box - ‘Frog Butler’. From previous experience, I knew this to be one of the most sought-after puppets ever made by Pelham. Frog Butler was part of an Alice In Wonderland Fairy Tale series released in 1950. Initial sales were poor, and coupled with a factory fire that decimated the stock being held, they never really made much of an impact on the British public. As such, examples of the puppets in good condition are considered very rare. Our example of Frog Butler was in wonderful condition, still within its original box and even had its original untangled strings. It proved very popular in our Specialist Toy Auction and after a fierce bidding battle from internet bidders and then telephone bidders, Frog Butler sold for an astonishing £1,500 – a world record price for the puppet. When I telephoned the vendor to give them the good news, they were in complete shock – adding – ‘I didn’t mean to give you that box, it was actually supposed to go to the tip!’ It just goes to illustrate; that you never know what you’ll find at the bottom of a box!

New fire engine A NEW "state of the art" fire engine will arrive at Kingswood fire station this summer. Avon Fire & Rescue Service says the Volvo FL280 appliance is one of seven designed and kitted out to specifications of a working group of 16 personnel including firefighters and workshop crews. The service says the new appliances are slightly smaller than the vehicles they replace, making it easier to get through narrow streets. As well as foam and water tanks and tools common to most appliances, the machines have new features, such microphones for communication between firefighters on the ground and the driver and individual seats to increase comfort on longer journeys.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Vote of confidence in future AS lockdown continues to ease because of the success of the Covid vaccines, there’s much to look forward to and to be optimistic about our area’s future. The Kings Chase Shopping Centre moving into public ownership is a momentous day for the future of Kingswood’s town centre and a major step towards the long-term regeneration vision for our area, which I have championed since becoming the area’s local MP. South Gloucestershire Council’s £10m acquisition of the Shopping Centre and car park – a very targeted intervention - is a vote of confidence in Kingswood’s future and can provide confidence to the private sector that it can and should invest further into our community. As a result, this

taxpayer investment should trigger a far bigger wave of private investment in and around the High Street over the coming years, ensuring value for money. Local residents will be all too aware of proposals that were talked about by the shopping centre’s previous owners, but which never came to fruition. Instead we saw continual decline. But options for redevelopment now include the potential for leisure, housing and community services to complement the retail and shopping experience, as the council explores innovative new ways to bring vitality to the high street in line with local people’s wishes. Investment into the Kings Chase shopping centre will see its long-

term viability secured so that it can become a thriving hub for the local community for shopping and a centre of local employment. It forms part of a wider £25 million investment into our town centre with funding already in place to transform and pedestrianise part of Regent Street and with the building work to restore our historic Whitfield Tabernacle now underway to turn into a new cultural venue. We now have our best chance ever to secure the regenerated town centre we all want to see for Kingswood. A public consultation on the council’s wider Masterplan will be undertaken this summer and I would encourage local people to contribute their ideas so we can

Parking rethink SHOPKEEPERS on Hanham Road have had their concerns about resident parking bays listened to by South Gloucestershire Council. The bays were due to be put in between the end of Laurel Street and Bright Street but this is being reconsidered and could now allow people to park for up to an hour to use the shops. Kingswood ward councillor Andrea Reid said businesses had contacted her and fellow ward councillor April Begley with concerns about customers not being able to park outside shops. She said: “The area isn’t designed for the amount of cars we have, so we can put things in place but it won’t completely solve the problem. “There is an element of drivers needing to consider whether they need to drive there, or whether they can park in the car park and walk a few minutes

to those shops. “For disabled drivers these shared bays are needed, but a lot of people who drive there could walk from Cecil Road. Drivers need to reassess what is good for everybody as opposed to just me. We need to appeal to hearts and minds.” A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: “We have been contacted by businesses and residents to express their concerns over the installation of the residents permit bays on Hanham Road, Kingswood, and how this may affect their trade. “We have considered the feedback and have approached the local ward councillors for their support in changing the two residents permit bays to shared use bays to allow customers to park for a short period of time to visit the local businesses.”

Women's victory WOMEN’S football will be put on an equal footing with men’s after permission was granted for changes at AEK Boco football club. The club had been trying since 2018 to upgrade facilities to allow teams to play in higher leagues than they do currently. Part of that requirement was the addition of floodlights, 1.8m fencing and spectator stands. However, when South Gloucestershire Council approved planning permission for the alterations, they limited use of the floodlights to the league games played by the men’s teams. Boco took its battle to the Secretary of State and won

approval for the women’s and children’s teams to be allowed to play under floodlights too, for up to three nights a week. South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the Greenbank field, has granted landlord’s permission for the work to commence now. The alterations have been the subject of local debate for several years. A public consultation in 2018 concluded that there was a “great deal of support” for Boco and the opportunities it gave young people in the area to get involved with support. However, many residents opposed the expansion of the club, fearing it would cause noise, light pollution, reduced access to the field and increased traffic.

Jabs and blood clots: the facts especially when used in a blanket way to explain emotive or conflicting information can be most unhelpful. To explain, around 4 people develop the reported clotting condition for every one million AZ vaccine doses. The UK has so far administered over 20 million doses. This condition tends to occur between 4 days to 2 weeks following vaccination. We now know that brain clots are more likely with Covid infection than a vaccine. This type of blood clots can also occur naturally and are more common but still very rare in younger women. The advice regarding blood clots is that anyone who has any of the symptoms below for four or more days after receiving the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine should seek prompt medical advice: • Severe or persistent headache

• Blurred vision • Chest pain • Shortness of breath • Swollen legs •Persistent abdominal pain • Unusual skin bruising • Pinpoint spots (not including the injection site) As health care professional, like other NHS colleagues, we are all ever mindful of our responsibility to never harm but always make sure that any actions that we take are safe and guided by sound evidence. We can never be mandated by the Government or any vested interest to carry out any action we believe to be unsafe or flawed. So to be clear, we continue to encourage everyone eligible to book their COVID vaccination appointment quickly. Your health and wellbeing are always paramount across all NHS settings. n FRYS BOWLING CLUB THE 2021 season is now well under way for Frys Bowling Club. With the new restrictions, it means we are able to welcome a limited number of spectators so you are welcome to come and give us a visit. On the green, most of our early season friendlies were cancelled, but we have been able to run in house games instead. The Bristol and District League has seen a mixed start for Frys: Thursday April 29 Frys welcomed Long Ashton to Somerdale in the Bristol and District Bowls League in their first game since 2019. The game started well for Frys with rink 3 quickly taking an 8 shot lead. Rinks 1 and 2 had a tighter start, with a mistake from Long Ashton's skip on rink 1, knocking up a Frys bowl cut a big count down and allowing Frys to then pull away. Rink 3 continued to pull away setting Frys up for the game, with rink 2 trading singles, and rink 1 holding tight, despite Long Ashton closing the deficit. With rink 3 picking up a comfortable win, the game looked secure, Long Ashton had other ideas, breaking the 13 end streak of singles on rink 2 over the next

ends, including a 7, cutting Frys advantage. Frys were able to hold off any late charge Long Ashton hoped to make, holding out for an 11 shot win, taking 8 points from the game to sit 2nd in table, setting up a top of the table clash with Henleaze 'A' next week. Scores: Rink 1: 17-13; Rink 2: 8-19; Rink 3: 24-6; Frys 49-38 Henleaze 'A' (8-2). Thursday May 6 Second place Frys travelled to first place Henleaze 'A' in the second match of the Bristol and District League. A close start saw the first 6 ends of the match scoring singles, but Henleaze soon took a lead with rink 1 going up by 9, and Frys conceding a 7 for the second consecutive week on rink 2 gave Henleaze a comfortable lead. With rink 3 close, rink 1 set about closing their deficit and eventually pulling level. Henleaze were able to hold the lead on rink 2 as the closing ends approached. Frys were unable to generate much momentum to pull the game back, with Henleaze taking rink 2 comfortably and holding out on rink 3, it left rink 1 with too much to do. Conceding 6 shots on the penultimate end ended any hopes Frys had of taking

any points, falling to a 56-35 defeat. Scores: Rink 1: 13-23; Rink 2: 12-19; Rink 3: 10-14; Frys 35-56 Henleaze 'A' (0-10). Thursday May 13 The third game of the league season saw Frys travel to South Bristol Sports Centre to take on Imperial on the artifical surface. Earlier rain left the surface damp and under gloomy skies, the game started out close, before Imperial were able to pull away on rinks 1 and 2. Approaching the halfway point, Imperial had a commanding lead which they were able to keep extending, despite some good bowls from Frys to minimise the negative counts. Meanwhile rink 3 had remained close until the halfway point from then Frys dominated the rink, surviving some close misses from Imperial, , but was not enough to overturn the deficit. The game was to take a dramatic turn in the closing stages, when a strong 15th end from rink 3 saw Frys sense an oppertunity to stay in the game. The 5 shots on the 15th was the start of 11 shots in the final 3 ends from rink 3, with Imperial's skip saving 2 shots on the final end. This late flurry saw

If it’s News Email: news@hanhamandlongwellgreenvoice.co.uk

Frys back in the game and with rinks 1 and 2 picking up valuable shots in their closing ends. This left Imperial only 2 shots up with one end to finish on rink 2. A loose end from Frys left them chasing with Frys skip narrowly missing the jack with his first bowl, and the final bowl too tight, left Frys 3 shots behind with only 2 points from the 46-49 defeat dropping them to 9th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 10-20; Rink 2: 10-22; Rink 3: 7-26; Frys 4649 Imperial (2-8). We are open to new members.
