Incident review POLICE have renewed an appeal for witnesses as part of an review into an incident at Conham River Park in which a 12-year-old boy received a head injury. Officers were called to the park at about 3pm on Saturday 26 March. An initial investigation was carried out, which included statements being taken from the child and an adult family friend and a woman being arrested, and later de-arrested, before being interviewed at a police station. The initial outcome was that no further action would be taken, based on evidence gathered at the time. A review was launched several weeks later after senior officers became aware of public concern over the decision. Police have since reclassified the incident as racially motivated. Superintendent Mark Runacres, Chief Inspector Mike Buck and a community leader, met with the injured boy’s father on May 9 to explain what actions had been taken so far and to give him further details of the review. Ch Insp Buck said: “We’re extremely grateful to the boy’s father for agreeing to meet with us and we had a constructive conversation in which we
answered his questions and give him assurances about this review and what it means. “We have complete empathy with his family and listened carefully to what he had to say. We gave him a full commitment to carrying out a comprehensive and thorough review and to keep him updated about its progress. “The review will include identifying and taking statements from as many people who witnessed this incident as possible, locating and viewing all available footage, re-examining 999 calls made to the emergency services, compiling medical evidence and liaising with relevant partner agencies,. “There will be learnings coming out of this incident, for example we’ve already identified the family should have been offered a right to review following the initial decision not to take any further action, and we have said sorry for that. “It’s only right and proper we are scrutinised on the decisions we take. “We will learn from this and the decisions we take will be subject to even further scrutiny so our communities can have full confidence in the outcome.”
Do you know this woman? POLICE have issued an image of a woman they would like to identify in an investigation into an assault on another woman in Kingswood. At around 5pm on Wednesday 13 April, the victim, who is in her 70s, was approached by a woman while waiting at a bus stop next to Boswells Café on Regent Street. She was punched several times to her head and body in an unprovoked assault. The offender made off towards Bar 501, accompanied by two other men. The victim attended hospital to be checked over but did not suffer any serious injuries. Police believe there were several witnesses to this incident and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. If you can help, please call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5222087796.

Justice at last for Ross and Clare From Page 1 They died almost immediately, while Lovell fled the scene. Lovell, who had 69 previous convictions, was jailed for the maximum term available at the time, 14 years. He served five and was released in 2018. The family launched the Justice 4 Ross and Clare campaign, urging tougher sentences, and have been backed throughout by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore. A 2014 petition calling for strengthened laws on dangerous driving gathered 15,000 signatures and Mr Skidmore scheduled a Commons debate on the subject. He also raised the issue with the then Prime Minister, David Cameron, who met Ross and Clare’s family in 2015. Oscar's star role on Rovers' big day A BOY who has just learned to walk independently was given the honour of leading the Bristol Rovers team on to the pitch for what turned out to be one of the most important games in their history. Football-mad Oscar Cridge, five, from Barrs Court, has cerebral palsy and until recently could only get around with a walking frame or in a wheelchair. Oscar had surgery on his spine in January to help him walk independently. Because the necessary operation wasn’t available on the NHS, his parents had to fundraise more than £60,000 to pay for the procedure and aftercare. He is surpassing expectations around post-operative recovery and can already stand on flat feet rather than tip toes, and walk short distances unaided. He is back at Emerson’s Green primary school, when he is not travelling for specialist physio sessions. His father, Shaun, said: “We were expecting it to take six months for him to get back to the range of movement he had before the operation, then start to build on that. “He’s already got more movement
than before and can kick a football around without a frame, which is what he’s always dreamed of doing. “On the day of the match everyone was so welcoming. He got to meet the players and was given a signed shirt. “When he walked out onto the pitch everyone was chanting his name and it gave him a huge confidence boost. It was quite a long way for him to walk but he managed it without any help.” The match proved to be a sensational one to be part of, with Rovers beating Scunthorpe United 7-0 and securing automatic promotion into League One. Afterwards charity singer Daz, who has raised much of the money used to pay for Oscar’s operation and aftercare, performed on the Fanzone stage. Oscar joined him on the platform to sing “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John, taking the microphone to belt out the chorus. He is also able to dance and tap his feet since the operation, so was able to get into the spirit of the post-match party. Shaun said: “It was such an emotional experience. It’s a day that none of us will ever forget.”

Safety concerns THE death of 16-year-old moped rider Daniel Davies has led to further discussion about the safety of so-called “throughabouts”. Daniel died on Easter Day in a collision at the controversial new Woodstock junction on the A4174 Avon Ring Road. A 27-year-old car driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Asked on BBC Radio Bristol whether he still thought throughabouts, also known as hamburger roundabouts, were a good idea and what action would be taken to make them safer, Cllr Savage said the fatal accident was incredibly sad and tragic. “My thoughts are with the family involved and what they’re having to come to terms with,” he said. He said he could not comment on the incident “but more broadly on through-abouts, while this was the first not only
in South Gloucestershire but also the wider region, they have been used in many other parts of the country and they work very well.” The £6.9million changes to the roundabout at the Wraxall Road junction, were criticised as “dangerous” and a “huge waste of money” when it reopened in October. Soon afterwards, the local authority paused a bigger, £30million project of upgrades for five other roundabouts on the ring road, including converting three of them into throughabouts, saying it wanted to wait 12 months to evaluate the new Wraxall Road roundabout layout and for people to become familiar with it. Conservative councillors in South Gloucestershire are inviting residents to take part in a survey about the roundabouts. Find it at https://tinyurl. com/3tbjnsdv

Bikers' tribute A CAVALCADE of mopeds and motorcycles was organised in memory of Hanham schoolboy Daniel Davies. Daniel, 16, died on Easter Sunday when his moped was involved with a collision with a car on the ring road’s new ‘through-about’ by Wraxall Road. His mother, Sam Davies, put out an appeal on Facebook to the biker community asking for people to accompany the funeral procession. It was due to take place on Saturday 21 May from Daniel’s home in Hanham to Westerleigh crematorium. Daniel, a pupil at Digitech, delivered Hanham & Longwell Green Voice as his first part-time job. He was about to begin a brick laying apprenticeship and was talented at managing stocks and shares. He had spent his whole life in Hanham, attending Samuel White’s, Hanham Abbots and Hanham Woods schools along with sister Beckey, 18.

We're all getting PARTIES and other celebrations are taking place across the Hanham area to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Here are details of just a few of them: A COMMUNITY party will take place on Hanham High Street. Because of restrictions on when the road can be closed, the event will take place a week after the bank holiday weekend on Saturday 11 June. The event will be run along similar lines to the summer fair that has been held on Hanham High Street in previous years. Residents can enjoy themselves from 2pm to 5pm, with the road closure starting at 1.30pm and running until 5.30pm.
Hanham Business and Community Partnership is organising and funding the event. THE jubilee will be marked with a beacon lighting on Siston Hill. Jubilee events that are open to the public, with a full nationwide list available at platinumjubilee. gov.uk A JUBILEE street party with a difference will see residents relive lockdown by recreating the fitness sessions they did for daily exercise. Around 18 households in Randall Close, Kingswood, will don their trainers and workout gear for a post-lockdown street workout to kick off their party. Organiser Mandy Newport has lived in the cul-de-sac for 24 years and said the neighbours loved organising street parties. She said: “This is the fifth time we’ve done it. We’ve done it to celebrate royal weddings and other events. “When we couldn’t do anything during Covid my daughter, Vic, decided to get everyone together by organising fitness sessions in the street
every Thursday night. She brought her amplifier outside and led everyone in a fitness class. We did it for about three months and always arranged for Nick’s ice cream van to come to the road at the end of the session for a treat.” Once the fitness session is over on the Jubilee weekend, everyone will enjoy an afternoon of team games, plus competitions for best cake, fancy dress, bestdressed house and Royal poem. They’ve also planned a scavenger hunt, afternoon tea, another visit from the ice cream van, fish and chips and street karaoke. Mandy said: “It should be a great, community spirit-filled, fun day.” RESIDENTS will be asked where they’d like a new park to be located and what it should look like, the council has said. At the start of this year,
From
South Gloucestershire Council announced it would spend £500,000 creating Queen’s Jubilee Park in Cadbury Heath. Councillor Rachael Hunt, cabinet member for communities, said: “We have started to identify suitable locations for Jubilee Park, and it provides us with a fantastic opportunity to upgrade one of our existing green spaces. “We will be carrying out community engagement to enable residents to help shape the plans, including its eventual location. Further details on timescales for the engagement will be shared in due course.” When the funding was agreed, the council said: “The proposal will enhance an existing open space in Cadbury Heath to create a place for residents and visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Works will include new landscaping, paths and sympathetic planting.”

n NEWS FROM OUR MP
Family should be very proud
Chris Skidmore writes for
Hanham & Longwell Green Voice
AS the local MP and your voice in Westminster, an important part of my role is to argue for changes in the laws of the land that respond to the priorities of residents and businesses across the Kingswood constituency. We have recently seen the end of one Parliamentary session which saw a number of new laws passed – and the start of a new Parliamentary session – marked by the Queen’s Speech in which 38 new bills were unveiled. Completing its passage through Parliament recently is the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, which sees the maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving in the UK increase from fourteen years to life imprisonment. This follows a long-running campaign sparked by the tragic deaths of Ross and Clare Simons in Hanham in 2013, at the hands of
a disqualified driver. I am proud to have campaigned alongside Ross and Clare’s family in the nine years following their deaths to strengthen the law on dangerous driving and in 2014, 15,000 people signed my petition calling for a change in the law. This petition led to me securing a debate in the House of Commons on dangerous driving in 2014 and the same year I raised the issue with the then Prime Minister, David Cameron, who met myself and the family in 2015. For far too long, drivers who killed either through reckless or careless driving have not faced sentences which reflect the terrible damage and harm that they cause to families and local communities. Ross and Clare’s family should be immensely proud of what they have achieved and the positive change
that has come from their tireless campaigning. Looking to the future, many of the new 38 bills set out in the Queens Speech will have a particularly positive impact locally. The Levelling Up & Regeneration Bill offers local councils and communities an ambitious package on regeneration to empower them to rejuvenate our high streets, protect our green spaces, and regenerate brownfield sites. In addition, tenants' rights will be improved through the Social Housing Regulation Bill ensuring better quality and safer homes and a new Schools Bill will raise standards for students, regardless of where they live. I look forward to scrutinising and debating these proposals as they work their way through Parliament to ensure maximum positive impact for communities.

Rugby pro inspires youngsters SKILLS used in sport can also help you get ahead in the rest of your life, children in Hanham have been told. Rugby player Max Lahiff, loosehead prop for Bristol Bears, visited Hanham Woods Academy to give an inspirational talk. Mr Lahiff spoke to 150 children from years nine to 11, including giving a pep talk to the year 11 football team prior to their County Cup Final. A school spokesperson said: “Max talked about what it takes to be successful in professional sport and how this applies to life, stressing the need to work hard and find your obsession to be successful.” Principal Steve O’Callaghan, who set up the visit, said: “We owe a huge amount of gratitude to Max that he took time out of his busy schedule to come and inspire students. “The students really enjoyed the experience and the
opportunity to speak to Max and ask him questions. “As Principal, I was extremely proud of the way students
conducted themselves and the quality of questions they asked. They were great ambassadors for our academy.”

Funding for cycle route A SAFE cycling and walking route between Bitton Station and Keynsham Station is a step closer following a funding decision. The West of England Combined Authority has agreed to put money into further work to design and develop the Keynsham Road scheme, including preparing a case for more funding. Weca Mayor Dan Norris said: “If you’re popping to the shops, going to work or school, I want more people to think walking or cycling is the obvious choice. That will happen when it’s quick, safe and simple. So I’m very pleased that the West of England Combined Authority which I lead is investing this significant sum of money to help make that a reality. “I’m particularly delighted about the connection between Bitton and Keynsham which is something I’ve had a long-term interest in."

n OPINION LOCKDOWN 2020: what are the first feelings you associate with this? Negative, right? Being a mental health advocate, a mental health first aider (adults and youth), and the recruitment and training lead for Bristol-born charity Suicide Prevention UK, I wanted to introduce a positive spin on the impact of lockdown 2020. “Many people ask me, “Has the demand on your service increased since lockdown?” to which the answer is yes. But I want to focus on how this is a positive, rather than a negative. “The impact lockdown 2020 had on our mental health and wellbeing is undeniable. People who had not previously suffered with mental health illness found themselves anxious about leaving the house, afraid to close the 2m distance between loved ones, and a dark cloud of depression looming over them. After all, our basic human needs and routines were restricted or forbidden. “But what this did do is normalise these feelings. People started openly talking about their mental health, realising others felt the same. We said words like anxiety, diagnosis, depression,
Warmley-based charity Suicide Prevention Bristol has seen demand for its support increase since the first lockdown. Volunteer Skye Taynton, from Hanham, manages recruitment and training for the local volunteers who staff the charity’s helpline and who patrol the streets of Bristol to help vulnerable people. Here, she shares her thoughts on what we can learn from what has happened during the pandemic to promote better mental health. suicide; we started to break the stigma. In turn, we validated people's feelings, because we empathised with them. “We started up groups on social media, such as Covid-19 Local Community Support. We offered new mums our unneeded necessities; those who fled domestic abuse were given furniture or white goods; those who needed basic food and supplies had shopping delivered to their door; and we took our shielding neighbours' dogs out for walks. “These groups still exist and we still use them. That sense of community, of helping others, became and is still higher than ever before.
“We had everything we took for granted stripped away: Sunday lunches with the grandchildren, snotty noses and sticky fingers. As a result, we now appreciate the little things. We long to be outdoors, we take our time in supermarkets and it’s never felt so good to hug your parents, or playfully push your sibling. “We longed to cook dinner for a party of 10, because for so long it had been just you and yours, within four walls. Now when your family and friends leave and say goodbye, we hold them that little bit tighter, for a little bit longer, inhaling their scent, and feeling grateful for the physical contact. “We ask our children, “How was school?” and we stop to
LISTEN, instead of hastily bundling them into the back seat, focused on the fact we have ‘so much to do’. “We made babies! A lot of them! In years to come, I expect our lockdown 2020 babies will be a recorded statistic, 2021’s baby boom! We went to maternity appointments alone, we were told, “I'm sorry, something isn't right” alone, birthed alone. We broke our hearts over Facetime, sat in our cars, alone. “We realised how resilient we are, how strong we can be as individuals, and ‘immediate’ family units were reborn. We bought inflatable pools, and had BBQs in the garden. We splashed and screeched, and we later played board games or had film night, together. “Let's not forget lockdown 2020. Let's remember the positive changes it helped us implement. Did lockdown rob us of many things? Yes it did. But did it also teach us many things? Yes it did. “If you are struggling with your mental health and you need to talk, call our free national Suicide Prevention Helpline on 0800 689 5652.”

Foodbank sees rise in demand THE cost-of-living crisis has already had an impact at Kingswood Foodbank at Bourne Christian Centre. Higher numbers of local people are being referred to the foodbank, and at the same time fewer people are donating money or goods. In May the foodbank had its busiest day of the year so far, handing out food parcels for 38 adults and 17 children. Volunteer Peter Shears said: “It’s a two-prong issue. There’s been a sudden increase in people’s bills such as energy costs and National Insurance as well as the cost of inflation. “Therefore more people are coming to the foodbank, but people who used to donate to us might not have spare money to do so any more. “We do get donations from
businesses as well, which is a big help. We use money to get an Asda delivery to us of the things we’re running low on. “As part of the Bristol North West Trussell Trust we have access to a central warehouse we can order things from. Even they’re running low on some things: we weren’t able to order any more toilet roll this week. “There’ve been a few things we haven’t been able to include in the parcels we hand out but it does change week to week. Cooking oil has become harder to get hold of since the war in Ukraine began.” Two Ukrainian families have been referred to the foodbank by South Gloucestershire council. One had family members already based in the UK, but three more people had arrived as refugees. Mr Shears said: “If people
suddenly have three extra mouths to feed, that can be the difference between managing and needing our support. “There is a central hub being set up in Avonmouth specifically to help Ukrainian refugees. “We’ve heard that some foodbanks have been asked by people not to give them anything that needs to be served hot, because they can’t afford to turn their ovens on. We haven’t had that here yet but it might happen if things continue the way they are.” As well as food, the foodbank also needs donations of toiletries and cleaning products. For the current list of products needed by the foodbank, check the Kingswood Foodbank Facebook page which is updated twice a week.

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY A FASCINATING insight into the man that was King Henry 8th by Professor Hutton. Perhaps some of the lesser know facts that made Henry one of the most famous of his piers. How he became engrained in the psyche of this country. He has been portrayed on screen and TV more than any other monarch. Remember Sid James ? The number of Kings Head pubs. The famous painting of him by Holbein. Did you know Henry had two famous role models, King Arthur and Henry 5th ? This can be reflected in his life and paintings of the time. As we know he had a large appetite but this was not really a problem in his early years as he had manic energy. However, this
was to change when a jousting accident fractured his skull and broke his leg when he was 44. This left him in much pain and reduced his mobility. Hence, he increased in size and had a waist of 54 ins. This is comparable with a Sumo wrestler ! To conclude; Henry did not achieve Great as he would of wished but was colourful, fascinating, ruthless and devious. An interesting question from the audience on the comparison of Henry with Donald Trump ! Next meeting at the Park Centre, Kingswood is Tuesday 7th Jun, 7pm for 7.30 pm start. Visitors £3.50 incl tea/coffee and biscuit. A talk on The Midland Way by Alan Matthews.

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM AFTERNOON WI Our May members meeting was as usual, very well attended. The subject of the presentation was The River Avon. Most of our members live and possibly grew up very close to this river and have a genuine interest in this body of water. Two members of the Hanham Local History Society provided an illustrated talk of the river and its history. The river rises in South Gloucestershire near to Tetbury and flows south through to Wiltshire, then west across to Somerset and out into the Severn Estuary at Avonmouth in west Bristol. We heard a short history of each town and village the river either flowed through or passed near by. This was quite enlightening, with a regular theme
of very old ecclesiastical buildings in ruins or disrepair. Although the river is 75 miles long, there is just 19 miles from it's source to exit into the Severn. It was interesting to learn how the river has shaped industry in the past and now in more recent times, tourism has become the modern industry. At our June meeting we shall be celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee with a ticket only afternoon tea and quiz. Our last meeting before the summer break will be held on July 11th at 1.30pm We shall be learning about the colourful and personal life of Queen Victoria. New members are always welcome, if you are interested in joining us, please contact me on 01179325027. Ann Baulch

School hosts Big Bake CAKES, bakes and biscuits were the order of the day at the Big Bake held at King’s Oak Academy. The school played host to mini masterchefs from primary and secondary schools across the Cabot Learning Federation multi-academy trust. This is the second year the Big Bake has taken place. Teams from each school brought along a cake they’d baked to be judged in a taste test. Michelin-star chef Josh Eggleton from the Pony restaurant group, plus Junior Bake Off runner up Robbie Hedges, headed up the judging panel. Cabot Learning Federation’s CEO, Steve Taylor, also joined as a judge. While the cake judging took place, the teams were set a technical challenge to complete against the clock. Primary pupils
Robbie Hedges, from TV's Junior Bake Off, with Steve Taylor, CEO of Cabot Learning Federation, chef Josh Eggleton and successful competitors at the CLF Big Bake final held at King's Oak Academy were asked to decorate biscuits, while secondary pupils had to make scones, which contributed to each school’s overall score. Bonus points were awarded for bakes that showcased the academy trust’s values.
The winning primary school was Summerhill in St George, while the secondary winners were Bristol Brunel Academy. Cabot Learning Federation Executive Principal Kate Richardson said: “It was a
fantastic afternoon to show our children that they are part of something bigger. We thoroughly enjoyed the baking, talking to the inspiring judges, being together following the pandemic and, of course, tasting the bakes.”

Care home manager off to Palace garden party A CARE home manager from Hanham will be rubbing shoulders with royalty when she attends the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Ann Aubrey, 61, has been manager at The Gables in Sydenham Way for 20 years. The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) nominated Ann to attend the garden party in recognition of services to care. Ann, whose family has lived in Hanham for 75 years, said she was looking forward to the event on May 25. She said: “We’ve been told that Prince Charles and Camilla will probably be there, and there’s also been mention of William and Kate. “I’ve got a navy blue outfit and hat to wear, although I might still change my mind. It’s going to be extra special to go to Buckingham Palace at the moment because of the Jubilee.”
As well as the garden party, Ann has a second reason that 2022 will be especially memorable for her: she is currently a widow but is planning to get remarried in September. She said: “The last two years have been harder than most people can imagine in the care industry. It’s been very hard on the residents and for the staff too. We had one case of Covid right at the start then none at all until a fortnight ago, when nine residents caught it at once. Luckily a lot of them didn’t even have any symptoms and they all survived. “I think what makes The Gables different is that the people who live here are still independent and go to the coffee shop, see relatives and so on. Paul Edwards, who owns The Gables with wife Jacky, is attending the garden party with Ann.

E-scooters crackdown POLICE are trying to crack down on illegal use of E-scooters on public pavements and roads – if only they can catch up with the offenders. Speaking at the Hanham & Longwell Green Community Engagement Forum, PC Lee Humphreys said around 14 police officers spent a day handing out leaflets locally to educate people that they can only use E-scooters on private land. He said: “We did see one scooter actually riding on the road but we were all out on foot. These things are too quick and if you’re not literally right on top of it, boom, they’re gone. “I think there’s a real lack of understanding because a lot of people are saying, ‘But they’re a great idea and if they’re not lawful then why are they selling them?’ “Any of them that are not the Voi pink ones are literally needing to be ridden on private
land. “There’s the misconception that people think you can use these scooters on the cycle path and you can’t” People using an E-scooter on a public road or pavement can be prosecuted for driving without a driving licence and driving without insurance. PC Humphreys said it is difficult to charge youngsters with using E-scooters knowing that they could end up in court. He said: “We get 15-year-old kids sometimes on these things and the idea of [them] going to court and being disqualified from driving potentially is a difficulty to weigh up. I’m sure it’s a debate that many people would have different opinions on.” He said the police were focusing on educating people not to use the scooters by going into schools and talking to as many people as possible out on the beat.

n NEWS Get back to nature for mental health FREE mindfulness sessions will run at Kingswood Community Allotment to help people connect with nature. “Introduction to mindfulness through nature connection” classes will run on Wednesdays from 11am to 12pm. The first batch of four classes starts on June 22 and continues until July 13. The second batch begins on July 24 and runs until August 14. Green Spaces Coordinator Georgina Green said: “We’re organising these post-lockdown as a way for people to get out and enjoy nature. “Mindfulness has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, as has being outdoors. By combining the two, we hope to offer something really powerful. “It’s a great time to be in the allotment because we’re just planting out everything and it’s unrecognisable from where it was a year ago when we started it.” The allotment, near Pound Road, also offers free gardening sessions and wellbeing sessions, to get the community involved in growing, learning about plant care, and raising flowers and vegetables. Later this month, it will showcase its work as part of the Chelsea Fringe festival, which runs in parallel with Chelsea Flower Show. Along with the Orchard Gardening Group that runs next to Orchard Medical Centre, volunteers will show the best of their flowers and vegetables. To get involved with mindfulness sessions or gardening groups, contact georginagreen@southernbrooks.org.uk or phone 07814 288916.

n WHAT'S ON
n ANTIQUES
Guess Who? For a certain portion of the population, something big is happening. Something monumental, something that will change history forever. A new Doctor Who! At the time of writing, the latest Doctor has been announced, as well as some returning characters from previous series. It’s created quite a buzz in the fan community. Next year the series turns sixty years old. But why am I telling you this? Well – because Dr Who memorabilia is an interesting case study to use when discussing collectables and their value. Think of any mainstream television or film franchise and there will be a toy line associated with it – Star Wars, Star Trek, even Ghostbusters had action figures. But Doctor Who is a little different. It didn’t really have a dedicated toy line until nearly twenty years after its first showing, and even then the toys were made by different companies and didn’t really ‘fit together’ for playing. Then in 2005 the series was rebooted and its popularity skyrocketed. It became mainstream, it became not only the talk of the playground, but the talk of the office, or the gym. It was everywhere. Naturally, the BBC releasing their error previously – immediately produced a toy line to co-inside with the series. Suddenly action figures were everywhere; you could buy different versions of the same figure, Daleks in all shapes and sizes (some that walked and talked!) Once those ‘New Who’ figures started to sell, so the BBC released ‘Classic Who’ figures – so you could relive your childhood in miniature form! But 2005 was – rather shockingly – nearly twenty years ago now. Those fans back in 2005 who couldn’t afford them (or rather weren’t allowed!) are now in their thirties and forties and have disposable income. Many of those figures are now worth considerable sums of money and moreso with the renewed interest surrounding a new lead actor in the series – prices have risen again, and I promise next year when the new series is shown – they will rise even further. Last month we held a special auction of Doctor Who memorabilia – many of the lots being the very figures I have mentioned. An average result during the sale would see one of the ‘Classic Who’ figures selling for over one hundred pounds. Original price in 2005? Four ninety-nine! So, please, rummage in your lofts, basements or even behind the sofa and be on the look out for Dr Who toys! Andy Stowe East Bristol Auctions

n PHARMACY BLOG
Your support is princely to us Our Superintendent Pharmacist was recently invited to a special reception hosted by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales at St James's Palace. The event recognised the extraordinary contribution and dedication of community pharmacy teams such as Ellacombe Pharmacy to the nation's health, especially during the pandemic. Before Covid, a funding cut to all local pharmacies in England put us under substantial strain. Pharmacies will close for various reasons, but the last five years have seen a historic acceleration, with closures affecting mainly small to medium-sized pharmacies. When our funding was cut, our small pharmacy team pulled together with resolve. Ellacombe Pharmacy decided that we would not charge for the non-NHS funded services we
provide, vital lifelines for the housebound and vulnerable such as free medicines deliveries. Events have since shown the folly of the funding decision, yet sadly, its impact still plays out. We still now need your support. How can we work together? Ellacombe Pharmacy's new repeat prescription ordering app offers convenience and speed; we ask you to please choose our service and sign up. Remember that community pharmacies are part of the NHS; our settings may look different, and our ethos and values are shared with the NHS logo acknowledging this. Our contractual working arrangements are like GP surgeries. We are also always mindful that we carry a real risk of business failure; there

is no safety net or fallback. All our bills and outgoings must be met as a going concern. The health and wellbeing challenges in Hanham and Longwell Green are more significant today than ever before. Even before the pandemic, the role of community pharmacy as the most accessible NHS out-post, always offering face-to-face clinical consultations, was well documented. The services on offer include vaccinations, expert advice, access to medicines, ailments, mental and physical wellbeing, tackling health inequalities, gender-based discrimination and violence, promoting community
cohesion, helping with early diagnosis of cancers, and effective management of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Our role is also critical in dealing with the NHS backlog. In the last two years, in partnership with our ever generous community, we have risen above every challenge COVID-19 has thrown at us. Place your confidence in us, and we can also help simplify and save you time managing your prescriptions.

n SPOTLIGHT ON FOSTER CARE nnNEWS MESSAGE FROM SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL
Hdy Improving our hdy
What is the difference between an independent fostering agency and a Local Authority? Foster carers in the UK can apply to work with either a local authority (LA) or an independent fostering agency (IFA). The choice depends on what feels right for them. Finding good-quality foster parents to look after the rising number of children in care is an ongoing challenge for local authorities. This is particularly the case for older children, siblings, and young people with disabilities, where it can be a little more to find suitable It isdifficult important to us that foster homes due to complex needs. highways network hhh
SINCE 2019, South Gloucestershire Council has committed a record £174 million towards improving our highways network. This is a figure we are committed to building on, and ensuring the impact benefits as many people as possible in our communities. This doesn’t just mean we are investing in roads used by cars, but also cycleways and footpaths. It includes significant transport infrastructure that supports public transport and sustainable forms of travel, as well as improving public safety. Earlier this year, we announced our plan for more than £10m of road maintenance and infrastructure schemes, with resurfacing works to roads
across our various communities, increased investment to tackle potholes, brand new EV charging points and improving junctions and bridges. I am delighted that this month, we have also announced plans to further this investment with an additional £1.2m set to go towards further resurfacing and maintenance works as well as a £1m investment into metrobus infrastructure. This will provide a massive boost to our ongoing efforts to keep our area moving, whether people are driving, walking, cycling or taking public transport, with next steps to confirm which roads will feature in the updated programme expected to happen in the coming weeks.

WILLIAM CHAMPION’S GARDENS, WARMLEY The remarkable and rare surviving 18th century Garden of the industrialist William Champion is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, together with Champion’s brass mill, which houses Kingswood Heritage Museum, and his original pin factory (the Clocktower). The Garden is designated Grade II on the UK Parks & Gardens Register, and contains a number of historic 18th century features that are all listed Grade II: a concealed 18th century grotto; the giant Statue of Neptune, once towering above a huge lake; the rare ‘snail’ viewing mound; ‘Echo Pond’, and Champion’s ‘summerhouse’ in the woods. The photograph illustrates the grotto, with its secret underground passages and chambers.

MATCH REPORTS Thursday April 28 The Bristol and District Bowls League season commenced. Frys were looking to improve on last season’s 9th place finish with a opening night win. Long Ashton were the visitors, and thanks to rink 2 holding Frys scoreless through the first half, the visitors held the advantage. Frys were able to start pulling shots back on rink 2 and rink 1 started pulling away, closing the game up heading in to the final ends. A crazy sequence of ends for rink 2 saw both teams exchange sizeable counts leaving the game in the balance. Rink 1 were able to pull further away, which helped Frys to a 5 shot lead with Rink 3 still to finish. Long Ashton held on to their early shot which saw the rink tied, but could not stop Frys taking a 5551 win with 7 points to leave them 3rd in the early table. Scores: Rink 1: 23-11; Rink 2: 16-24; Rink 3: 1616; Frys 55-51 Long Ashton (7-3). Thursday May 5 A difficult night for Frys at Henleaze 'A' saw them go pointless for the first time this season. A poor start set the tone as Henleaze pulled away on all rinks. Rink 1 were able to get back in touching distance, but
let the position slip badly. The deficits were too much for Frys to overcome slipping to a poor 27-70 defeat. Scores: Rink 1: 10-26; Rink 2: 8-20; Rink 3: 9-24; Frys 27-70 Henleaze 'A' (0-10). Thursday May 14 A slow start for Frys on rink 3 was countered by rinks 1 and 2, but Imperial crept their way into the game taking the lead. Rink 3 were able to remain in touching distance, giving Frys the overall lead. As the game neared the conclusion, Imperial started to comeback on rink 1, and with rink 3 doing what they needed to do to keep Frys at bay, Imperial took the lead again. Rink were unable to pick up the required 4 shots on the last end, leaving Frys 2 points from the 41-46 defeat.. Scores: Rink 1: 12-16; Rink 2: 16-9; Rink 3: 13-21; Frys 41-46 Imperial (2-8). Established family firm with 25 years experience
June, 2022 KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB BOWLING is under way for Keynsham Bowling Club in Keynsham Park, with the start of the “serious stuff” as league fixtures commence for the ladies and gents. Combining their friendlies and league results, the ladies have won four and lost three, with another five fixtures lost due to Covid and the subsequent inability to raise sides. In the Bristol and District League on a Thursday evening, the men’s A team have defeated Avonvale and Canford, while losing against Bradley Stoke. The B and C teams have only played one fixture, having beaten Port of Bristol and Knowle C respectively. The Friday men’s triples lost to St Anne’s Park, Victoria Park and Begbrook, before a resounding away victory at Greenbank. The club held its annual open day, but the weather was rather unkind and little bowling took place. But a number of people came along to have a look round the clubhouse, and some new members were signed up. Mike Barrow

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR
Honey, I love you: saving the West of England’s bees
I OFTEN say that the relationship between bees and flowers is best described as a 100-millionyear-old whirlwind romance. In this country, around 500,000 of our favourite pollinators play Cupid to flowering plants, busily collecting pollen and in the process becoming love’s messenger. But nature’s great honeys, the true flora and fauna Romeo and Juliet, are going through something of a rough patch. In the UK, habitat loss and bee-harming pesticide use mean we have already lost around 13 species of bee since 1900, and another 35 are facing the same fate. That’s bad news for the West of England. Not only do bees pollinate trees, whose oxygen we breathe, and which mitigate the climate crisis we face, but about one in three mouthfuls we eat depends on them, including those summer favourites like strawberries and cider. And without these industrious insects, it would cost £1.8 billion a year to pollinate our crops. Bees really are our region’s unsung heroes. When something as precious as our bees and other pollinators are under threat, we need
to do everything we can to save them and ensure this age-old romance endures. Thankfully, the West of England Combined Authority I lead is getting on with the job of relationship-mending. In May, I was delighted to launch the first-ever Bee Bold Awards to showcase the region’s very best “bee buddies”. This is a crucial step as we look to become the bee and pollinator capital of the whole country. From shops to schools, farms to factories, in offices and warehouses, all pollinator-loving groups are encouraged to take part. I know there are amazing organisations of all sizes in our region doing their bit to support our pollinator pals. Organisations like Bradley Stoke’s Natracare, who built their very own ‘bee garden’ which has become home to pollinating superstars including moths, bumblebees, damselflies and more. Or Avonmouth’s GENeco, whose new blooming wildflower meadows and ‘pollinator pond’ are but two recent bee-friendly actions from this bee-mad company. Or how about Agency UK, in Bath, who have
Metro Mayor

writes for the Voice reintroduced the nation’s favourite pollinator to the area for the first time in 80 years? These are just three organisations going above and beyond to support the region’s food heroes which I had the pleasure of visiting to launch the Bee Bold awards. I know there are many more who do so much good, and with these awards, we’re going to give them the recognition they richly deserve. If we all took a moment to look at the insects buzzing in our garden, we’d see that romance really isn’t dead. And with the actions the West of England Combined Authority is taking on bees, we’re going to ensure we keep that flame well and truly alive.
n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC
Housing project will help reduce reoffending LAST month, I celebrated one year since local people elected me to be Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner – and what a year it has been. I’ve enjoyed every single day, week and month since being elected in May 2021 and over the last few weeks I’ve been reflecting on the achievements of the last year, including the publication of the Police and Crime Plan, the appointment of Chief Constable Sarah Crew and the increase in the policing part of the council tax, following a successful consultation with more than 5,600 responses from local people. With the support of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, we secured over £1 million in funding for independent domestic violence advisors and sexual violence advisors, as well as over £100,000 of additional funding for sexual violence and domestic abuse services. I also supported the launch of
the Identifying Disproportionality in the Criminal Justice System report, and I have become the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners’ national lead for economic and cyber crime. There’s still plenty of work to be done, including continuing to ensure the new chief constable is delivering efficient and effective policing; meeting with local people and partners – particularly residents in rural areas – to hear about their policing concerns; and progressing work on the national economic and cyber crime portfolio. I’m very much looking forward to the year ahead and seeing what can be achieved. I work with many local agencies to prevent and reduce reoffending across our force area. Recently, I was lucky enough to see an innovative scheme in Gloucester that aims to reduce reoffending by giving prisoners a chance to learn new and transferable skills.
The scheme sees prisoners released on temporary licence from Leyhill Prison help build affordable, eco-friendly housing pods that will be situated on “meanwhile sites” – land which is temporarily available before being put to another permanent use – across the south west. The modular housing – which has a minimum lifespan of 60 years and is easy to relocate – will provide accommodation for prison leavers, refugees and those at risk of homelessness, and refuges for domestic abuse victims. As well as providing prisoners with skills that will help them find jobs when they leave prison and settled accommodation, which can reduce reoffending by up to 50%, prisoners will also be paid for their work, which could contribute towards a housing deposit or rent. The pods also help alleviate the lack of affordable housing and have eco-friendly features including a solar-powered heat pump and

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford insulation made from recycled milk cartons. However, the programme needs support, especially more permanent or temporary sites that will allow more projects to be rolled out. So I want to hear from councils and landowners who have meanwhile sites where six housing pods could be located for six years. This scheme is quite literally giving people a new start and, by doing so, keeping the community safe. Please do get in touch if you want to be involved.
