£6.9m plan to ease the jams DRIVERS are being asked for their views on ambitious proposals to reduce jams on the Avon Ring Road near Hanham. A consultation is taking place on plans to improve traffic flows on the Wraxall Road roundabout. Traffic lights will be introduced - it is the only roundabout on the road that does not have any signals at the moment - but the £6.9m plans also suggest converting the roundabout, also known as Woodstock roundabout, into a “through-about”, with lanes running through the middle of it. The approach roads will be widened on to the verges to make room for three lanes in both directions for vehicles on the ring road going straight ahead. Transport bosses say the changes are needed because traffic has increased even more following the development of Lyde Green. Full story: Pages 2 and 3

Ever wanted to dr A NEW junction at the Wraxall Road roundabout on the ring road could get the green light as part of a £6.9m plan to cut congestion and accidents. South Gloucestershire Council is seeking the views of residents and drivers after the West of England Combined Authority (Weca), which will foot the bill for the project at the A4174 in Kingswood, approved nearly £1.5million to develop a full business case. It follows a feasibility study into reducing traffic jams, which have increased since the Lyde Green housing development was built. Traffic lights will be introduced, but the biggest change is to convert the roundabout, also known as Woodstock roundabout, into a “through-about”, with lanes running through the middle of it. The approach roads will be widened onto the verges to make room for three lanes in both directions for vehicles on the ring road going straight ahead. South Gloucestershire Council’s consultation document says: “Drivers on each approach will be given priority to enter the roundabout, with the timing of traffic signal phases responding to changes in the use of the junction throughout the day. “This will enable improved management of any queues during different times of the day

with the aim of reducing delays. “Vehicles making through movements along the ring road will be able to use the new lanes passing through the centre of the current roundabout.” Council leader Toby Savage told Weca Committee members on Friday, February 15: “The A4174 Wraxall Road roundabout is a significant bottleneck and has been a source of complaints for a number of years. “I’m very pleased to see work is continuing on what is a complex junction. “There are consultation events in the coming weeks to engage with residents directly on the shape of that proposed improvement project.” The council’s consultation paper adds: “The roundabout currently experiences congestion during the busiest hours on weekdays, with queuing on the ring road as well as Tower Lane and Wraxall Road approaches to the roundabout. This includes local bus services. “The delays are expected to increase as traffic levels grow, mainly due to more housing and jobs planned for the Bristol area.” It reveals that three other options were rejected — keeping the roundabout but with traffic signals at all approaches except Wraxall Road; a roundabout with traffic lights at all approaches; and replacing the roundabout

A report to the Weca committee said that on top of the £200,000 cost of the feasibility study and the now-approved £1.5million to produce a full business case, implementing the scheme would require nearly another £5.2million. Two drop-in sessions will be held for people to find out more before responding to the council's consultation. Plans will be on display and representatives from StreetCare will answer questions. These take place on Wednesday March 6 and Wednesday March 13, both at Warmley Community Centre from 5-7pm. You can find the consultation by visiting https://bit. ly/2T3d0bM. We'll keep on flying the flag for Hanham, traders pledge THE flags on Hanham High Street are popular with adults and children from around the area. This year they went up on Valentine's Day for the first time and traders are now looking at some banners for other occasions during the year. The February 14 flags were sponsored by Hanham Business and Community Partnership and put up by Mat Knight from John Woods Cycle Repair Centre and Carl Smith from Eclectic Gift Shop. Nicola Bartlett, who runs the gift shop and is a member of the partnership, said: “It’s the first time we’ve had pink, red and white Valentine’s flags along the High Street. “The response was fantastic. There are lots of families in the

area and many of them like to take their children along the High Street to see the flags flying – but we had lots of lovely comments from people of all ages. Many customers said how wonderful they were as they add lots of colour to the High Street and they hope to see more throughout the rest of the year. “We’re still deciding which ones to put up later in the year but we are hoping to introduce some new ones to coincide with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.” The flags traditionally go up to mark St George's Day and Remembrance Sunday but in recent years have been introduced to celebrate events such as Hanham's summer fair, Harry and Meghan's royal wedding and the High Street's Halloween pumpkin trail.

Community cafe moves to new venue A LONGWELL Green cafe set up to end loneliness in the community has found a new home. The cafe has been held every Friday at Longwell Green Community Centre and featured games, activities, raffle and 'bargain' table, as well as the chance to buy hot drinks and reasonably priced lunches. The cafe will move to All Saints United Church, just down the road opposite Aldi, from March 1 and will still be held every Friday from 12-3pm. The cafe is part of a growing number set up by St George resident Gillian Flower who is passionate that people living in the community should never feel lonely. With the help of her daughter Michelle Ford, who lives in Hanham, she has also established cafes in Speedwell and Kingswood. The cafes are proving really popular, with the Longwell Green one welcoming 80 people

at its opening, increasing to an incredible 150 visitors by just its fourth week. Gillian set up Bristol Community Friendship Club in 2016 after she was touched by a TV show about loneliness. Its Facebook group now has more than 800 members. There is no age barrier to attend the cafes and parents are welcome to bring their children. The new Longwell Green venue, at 83 Bath Road, has a car park and disabled access. The community cafe is keen to recruit more volunteers to meet and greet new guests, help serve food and run activities. You can also donate items for Gillian to sell on her Facebook page (Bristol Community Cafes) to raise money to keep the cafes running. If you can help, or would like to find out more about attending the cafe sessions, please call Gillian on 07948 393397 or email gill.flower@blueyonder. co.uk

'Lights would overwhelm our homes' HANHAM residents rallying against plans to expand facilities at AEK Boco Football Club have enlisted the support of the parish council. About 30 people living near the club in Greenbank Road packed a meeting of Hanham Parish Council to tell councillors they are willing to fight tooth and nail to see the scheme thrown out. It comes as the club submitted plans to South Gloucestershire Council for four 18m floodlights, two stands and a 1.8m fence. Residents told the parish council's planning committee that Greenbank playing field was not the right place for such an ambitious scheme. James Brown, who lives in Tyler Close, said: “The floodlights would be 18.29m high – that's huge. It's higher than the roof of my house. They will illuminate all the houses on Greenbank Road, the bottom

pitch, the houses bordering the pitch and will be seen from Hanham Mount. “The fence enclosing the pitch will prevent the usual walkers, casual football players and runners from being able to do a circuit of the green and ruin the open ground facility that was intended to be the green lungs of the area.” Resident Steve Wyatt said: “No effort has been made to blend the floodlights with the environment. We will see four big towers towering over the field opposite us. That will have an environmental impact. “There's going to be too much noise – there will be chanting and singing, car doors slamming and horns going off and this will be on a night when children will be in bed.” Colthurst Drive resident and lighting engineer Andy Bates showed councillors computer generated images of how the floodlights would look from

various vantage points across the area. “The light will bounce up and the light levels will be up to our windows. We will have glare to deal with and they won't be able to control the light when it rains – the whole place will just glow. “You'll even see the floodlights from Granny's Lane. I'm concerned we're not taking on the overall impact the floodlights would have.” Another resident told the meeting: “The application is totally out of keeping with the area. It's a housing estate with a public open space in the middle. Boco are taking it over and turning it into a football stadium.” Steve Ashlin, of Tyler Close, said: “People are getting fed up. We have had enough of being asked what our opinions are. It's costing us thousands of pounds (to fight the application). Why should we pay it when the football club just keeps throwing

grenades at us?” Further concerns raised at the meeting included bad language, traffic problems, particularly with the new estate being built at Greenbank Road, lack of adequate car parking and an increase in noise. It was also suggested South Gloucestershire Council's consultation process is flawed as not every resident living nearby was sent a planning notice, including one householder who lives just 40m from the site. Councillors listened to residents concerns and told them they would prepare a response to send to South Gloucestershire Council as part of the consultation process. Councillor Paul Glanville sympathised with residents: “The masts are not in keeping with the area. They are imposing and out of character.” Councillor Bernard Jackson told residents: “We will try to help you as much as we can

The lights will stay on around 3 to 3 ½ hours • Sunday – no usage • Monday – no usage A resident's mock-up of the impact the lights could have on the area and will try to put as many objections as we can (to South Gloucestershire Council) on your behalf. “It's down to South Gloucestershire Council to have the last say, we can only put your feelings forward to the council.” No one at the meeting spoke in favour of the scheme. If the plans are agreed, South Gloucestershire Council will then need to decide whether to grant

In a statement written in support of the planning application, AEK Boco said more than 500 boys and girls aged five to 18 plus 100 men wear the club shirt every week: “The impact of not having managed, controlled, efficient lighting would be devastating to the development of how our club has grown over the last 30 years. n NEWS TAX payers will see the average bill for basic South Gloucestershire Council services rise by £43 this year. The council has agreed a 2.99% increase in council tax, as it deals with an 11.2% drop in government funding. That means an increase of £43.08 in the cost of council services to Band D tax payers, from £1,441.07 last year to £1,484.15 this year. Downend residents also pay for the services of Downend and Bromley Heath Parish Council: its £304,500 budget is unchanged and the £66.68 charge for Band D residents is slightly lower than last year, due to an increase in the number of households paying council tax. In addition a charge for “special expenses” – £16.68 for Band D tax payers – is added to bills for services the council makes which are specific to the area. Residents of areas with no parish council, such as Staple Hill, face a special expenses charge of £31.02 for Band D

Council adds £43 to tax bills

Council leader Toby Savage tax payers, while those living in areas covered by Emersons Green Town Council will pay £39.40 for its services plus £18.02 special expenses in Band D. A £26.13 rise in combined police and fire precepts will see these elements of Band D bills cost £291.29. The total bill for a Band D council tax payer in Downend will be more than £1,850. South Gloucestershire

Council will spend £221 million on services plus £86.7million on school buildings, roads and other infrastructure in the coming year. A further £208m of ringfenced education funding from the government will be passed on to schools. The Conservative administration, whose budget was passed on February 13, says it is investing “into the next generation”. It has pledged more than £100m for school buildings, roads and highways during the next four years, promising a new primary school, two new special schools and a new M49 junction in Severn Beach. The council will also receive some funding from other sources, including the West of England Combined Authority, and will spend £3m from its own reserves.

Some £6.3million is expected to be saved through an ongoing programme of spending cuts, the exact details of which remain unclear. Council leader Toby Savage said: “We have put forward the largest funding commitments this council has ever made to our schools and to our roads, this administration’s two highest priorities.” Liberal Democrat group leader Claire Young called the budget “a classic pre-election extend and pretend budget” which ignored the central issue of government underfunding. Labour group leader Pat Rooney said the government reduction in the council’s funding of 11.2% was more than the national average decrease of 7.5% and added: “The primary cause of our financial problems is the Tories in Whitehall.”

Skate park set for £50,000 facelift AN EYESORE skate park which was shut down for health and safety reasons is to get a £50,000 facelift. Warmley Forest Skate Park fell into disrepair and became a magnet for vandals. The metal and wooden structures were in constant need of repair which proved to be uneconomical and led to its closure on health and safety grounds. The funding has been awarded through the Landfill Communities Fund which is distributed by South Gloucestershire Council’s waste contractor Suez. The cash will transform the skate park and provide a new facility. The move has been welcomed by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore and Oldland Common councillor Sam Bromiley. Chris said: “I am delighted that Warmley Forest Skate Park has been successful in obtaining £50,000 for a complete

encouraged to see investment being made across Kingswood – from new sports pitches in New Cheltenham to new play areas in Hanham.” Cllr Bromiley, who has been part of the project, said: “We are really excited about this funding announcement as it’s

Cycle marathon highlights youth mental health

The cyclists also paid a visit to students at Digitech Studio School

STUDENTS at schools in Warmley and Oldland Common were visited by two councillors who cycled 230km to highlight Children's Mental Health Week. Council leader and Longwell Green councillor Toby Savage and deputy Jon Hunt battled through the elements to cycle to every one of the 121 councilrun schools in the district to highlight the importance of the awareness week. Pushing through weather warnings of strong winds and icy rain, the pair visited students at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy and Digitech Studio School during their two-day mission. Both relatively novice cyclists, Toby and Jon trained for only a month leading up to the ride, taking to the roads of South Gloucestershire whenever possible, and also receiving assistance and advice from reigning Paralympic, World and European triathlon champion Andy Lewis MBE. Cllr Toby Savage, who is also cabinet member for Schools, Skills and Employment, said: “I

am not an experienced cyclist by any stretch of the imagination. This ride was the most challenging physical feat I have ever put myself through, and that was before the horrendous weather set in - but if it wasn’t going to be hard, it wouldn’t be worth doing! “Work to improve mental health is very important as it coincides with the Council’s number one priority of improving school standards. We want to see every child achieving their full potential and so it has been very encouraging to speak to so many students and members of staff about what is being done to support and improve good mental health in South Gloucestershire schools.” Cllr Hunt, who is councillor for Downend and also a cabinet member for Schools, Skills and Employment, said: “Keeping ourselves going as the weather got worse was tough, but each time we visited a school and heard about the work being done by schools and pupils to make a difference it gave us that added

the ride was made by South Gloucestershire-based aerospace firm GKN, with a donation being made to children's mental health charity Place2Be. A HANHAM nursing home has been turned into a house of multiple occupation (HMO) without planning permission. The owners of the former Wayside residential care home on the corner of Whittucks Road and Grange Avenue, have now applied to South Gloucestershire Council for retrospective permission after turning it into a nine-bedroom HMO. The application, made by a Mr and Mrs Seegum, said there are no plans to extend the building or add any further bedrooms. The application was considered by members of Hanham Parish Council at a planning meeting on February 19. Councillors said they weren't aware of any objections from people living nearby but they were concerned that the plans were not clear on parking or bin storage. Councillor June Bamford said: “We are concerned there isn't enough parking spaces for vehicles and bicycles and space for bin storage.” A final decision will be taken by South Gloucestershire Council.

World record bid to help Jessie May

Lib Dems pick Dine

GREAT British Bake Off semi-finalist Briony May helped a Kingswood charity when she organised the world record attempt for the most people eating cake and drinking cocktails at one time. Bristolian Briony was the brains behind the successful record bid, which took place at the Gloucester Old Spot in Horfield in aid of Jessie May. A total of 237 people munched on cake whilst sipping cocktails to raise £735 for the children's hospice at home charity. Briony, who lives in Horfield, was helped by fellow Bristolian and cocktail supremo Chelsie Bailey. The 34-year-old, who is also running the Bath Half Marathon to boost funds for Jessie May, said: “Myself and Chelsie are absolutely thrilled with how the record attempt went. It was so much fun. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who came along to support this wonderful charity.” Helen Mackie, senior community events fundraiser at Jessie May, said: “What a night and what an incredible fundraising event. It was wonderful to see so many people come together in support of Jessie May.” Jessie May nurses are currently supporting 65 families across the Bristol area through vital respite care and end of life and bereavement support. You can donate to Briony's marathon fundraiser by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ BrionyMay

A COUNCILLOR has been chosen to contest the Kingswood seat at the next general election for the Liberal Democrats. Dine Romero, is the Lib Dem Group Leader on Bath & North East Somerset Council, representing Southdown ward. She is part of an allfemale team taking on the Conservative incumbents of three parliamentary seats for the Lib Dems. Louise Harris, who represents Dodington ward on South Gloucestershire Council, will contest the Filton and Bradley Stoke seat, while South Glos group leader Claire Young will stand in Thornbury & Yate. Dine faces a challenge: in 2017 the party’s candidate in Kingswood secured 1,749 votes, behind sitting Tory MP Chris Skidmore, who got 26,000 votes and Labour’s Mhairi Threlfall, with just over 19,000 votes.

n NEWS A FORMER army nurse is bringing a Britain's Got Talent semi-finalist to Longwell Green to raise money for a defibrillator along the Bristol to Bath railway path. Dawn Harrill, from Longwell Green, approached jazz vocalist Marvin Muoneke to ask him if he would like to take part in a charity concert to fund the lifesaving device. He readily agreed and will perform at Longwell Green Community Centre this month. Dawn said she ask for Marvin's help after seeing him perform at his home town. “He is an amazingly talented young singer,” she said. “I thought wouldn’t it be great to let the people of Bristol hear him, so I asked him if he would do a charity event for me, which he readily agreed. I am sure that anyone who comes will have a thoroughly enjoyable evening of high quality entertainment.” The big band and jazz concert, featuring Marvin's velvet tones, will take place on March 22 and will raise funds for an Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED)

March, 2019

Dawn's defibrillator mission which will be installed along the cyclepath, either at Bitton or Warmley. Dawn is a keen cyclist and uses the path to commute to work as well as for leisure. She said: “The number of people using the path seems to increase with each passing year, with runners, walkers, cyclists, dog walkers, children and their families all enjoying the traffic free routes. This is great, but the likelihood of someone having a heart attack or myocardial infarction along the path also increases with the number of users. Anyone unlucky enough to have this happen will have their chances of survival greatly increased by the availability of a defibrillator.” Dawn continued: “I used to teach first aid and defibrillator training so have a good awareness of the importance of first aid and the huge advantage that defibrillators can offer.

Dawn Haddrell “My main drive for this fundraising is that I volunteer with South Gloucestershire Council’s Walking for Health programme, where I organise a free event along the Bristol to Bath cycle path on two Tuesdays every month. This is primarily aimed at people who are recovering from health problems or just simply wanting to get fitter. We have a good number of quite senior citizens who join us and greatly enjoy the exercise as well as the social side of getting

out and about and meeting other people. There are lots of people of all ages out and about on the path these days. The walking group held a quiz in December which has already raised about £300 for the AED fund, but we need at least £1,000.” Dawn is no stranger to raising funds – last year, with her husband, daughter and family friend, she ran the Bristol Half Marathon in period medical costume. The aim was to mark the sacrifice of medics and nurses during the First World War and raised £1,450. The Boulevard Big Band featuring Marvin Muoneke takes place on March 22 from 7.309pm at the Ellacombe Room, Longwell Green Community Centre. Tickets are £15 with proceeds going to the AED fund once the hall hire cost has been covered. For tickets call 07966 267959 or email dawners@ btinternet.com

Lifeline for Majestics as councillor steps in A SUCCESSFUL gymnastics club in Longwell Green which is facing an uncertain future has been thrown a lifeline. Majestics Gymnastics is a popular venue for youngsters across South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath and North East Somerset. Based at Aldermoor Way for the past five years, the club has even been offered the chance to become a regional development base for TeamGym, a British Gymnastics' team competition. But their home has been earmarked for redevelopment as part of a wider project by developers CBRE and landowners Wolverhampton Pension Authority. It is unclear how the gym will fit into future plans, with talks between the two sides ongoing. Now South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage has stepped in to make sure the club doesn't get sidestepped. Cllr Savage, who represents the Longwell Green ward, was first made aware of Majestic's situation when owner Michelle George informed him they may not have a

home under the redevelopment plans. During a recent visit to the gym, Cllr Savage discussed the latest developments with Michelle and business partner Candice Littleton and said he would offer his assistance and raise their concerns with the developers. Cllr Savage said: “Having discussed Majestic Gymnastics’ future with Michelle in the past, I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit the gym and see the fantastic atmosphere they have created first hand. “Majestic do fantastic work locally, their work with young people to give them discipline and to keep them active and healthy is paramount to their development. I am very keen to see them accommodated within the site’s wider redevelopment and will be working with the new owners of the site to consider the gym’s place in their plans.” Michelle said: “Our gymnastics club means a great deal to the children, adults and families who visit us and it would break our

Toby Savage with the Majestic gym leaders hearts if we were unable to continue what we love. We will continue to push for our inclusion in the new development and hugely value Cllr Savage's support.”

Northern Soul fundraiser raises over £500 LOVERS of northern soul music helped raise more than £500 for charity as they danced the night away at a bash in Mangotsfield. Four DJs - John Lloyd, Malcolm Beedle, Bob Bavin, Jimmy Manu and Martyn Johnson - gave their time free of charge to spin the decks at the do at Mangotsfield United Football Club. Each of the 100 plus guests was given a raffle ticket which was entered into a draw. The winner of the lucky ticket was then invited to name a charity they would like to donate the proceeds of the evening to. Winner Brian Pike, from Longwell Green, chose Dorothy House, a hospice near Bath. DJ Jimmy Manu, of Kingswood, said: “It was a great night with plenty of dancing and we really appreciate all the people who turned up to support us.” The DJs were inspired to host the night following the success of their bi-monthly afternoon soul events at Barton Hill Rugby Club in Speedwell under the name Splash of Soul. Family hope treatment in Turkey will provide Lee with a lifeline

and a bone marrow transplant, which they hope will save his life. Lee’s mum Clare has received the news that Bristol Children’s Hospital plan to change Lee’s chemotherapy to a higher dose of cyclophosphamide and cytarabine, and a hospital in

Turkey has also said that they are able to treat him. The treatment at Memorial Sisli Hospital in Istanbul will cost $50,000 for six weeks of chemotherapy and hospitalisation, and despite the family having raised just under half of the total needed so far through selling a car, their online fundraising pages and fundraising events, the hospital have said that Clare can put down an initial payment of $5000 on the day and the remaining funds paid later. Clare will travel with Lee to Turkey. She told the Voice that Lee is looking forward to the trip. She said: “At the moment he is going to hospital every day, and we’re glad that there’s something out there that can help him.” The family are hoping that the treatment will help to get Lee’s cancer under a certain level, and their main goal is a

THE family of an eight-year-old boy with leukaemia are hoping treatment in Turkey will provide them with the lifeline they need. Lee Belgium’s relatives are asking the community to help them raise £90,000 for treatment. As the Voice went to print, they had raised £23,000. Lee, a pupil at Park Primary in Kingswood, who was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in May 2016 when he was six, has undergone intensive chemotherapy and also spent six months in hospital. The disease returned in January and May 2018, when he ended up dying for eight minutes and spent two months in intensive care. His family, who live in Lyde Green, were given the devastating news in August 2018 that cancer had returned in his bone marrow, and he now goes to Bristol Children’s Hospital three times a week to have chemotherapy, steroids and a new trial drug. The family have decided to do everything they can to raise £90,000 for Lee to go abroad for a treatment trial

CO-OP customers in Hanham have helped by new bikes for youngsters at Children's Hospice South West in Wraxall. Nineteen stores across Bristol and North Somerset made a donation totalling £5,000 to the Charlton Farm hospice, which cares for children with life-limiting conditions and their families. David Jackson, of Southern Co-op, said: "We wanted to do something a bit different than just donating money. "The hospice was already the charity partner of a number of our stores so we rang them and asked what would they need. When they said they didn't have any outdoor equipment, we felt it would be a good thing to do to donate bikes. "Together with all the stores in the area, we were able to raise £5,000 for the hospice which is incredibly special. It is quite an intimate hospice with a lot of care for individual children and it is local so helps so many local children." The donation has enabled the hospice to buy 18 new bikes for all age brackets from pre-school to adult. Amanda Gallagher, corporate fundraiser at Charlton Farm, said: "We care for around 500 families across the South West so this support will make a real difference to their lives."

'Friendly, kind and patient' pre-school

Big blaze at recycling plant

A HANHAM pre-school has been told by education watchdog Ofsted that it offers a 'Good' start for tots in the area. Christchurch Pre-School achieved Good ratings in each of the four categories judged by inspector Rachel Howell - effectiveness of leadership and management; quality of teaching, learning and assessment; personal development, behaviour and welfare and outcomes for children. The report said the manager is “passionate” about her role and works closely with staff and committee to move the pre-school forward. Staff are friendly, kind and patient and work hard to liaise with parents, the report said. Ms Howell found the children to be well behaved and making good progress. “Children's communication skills are progressing well, including those who learn English as an additional language and those that require extra support. Children learn to consider the needs of others and build friendships. They develop a sense of responsibility and learn to recognise risks...Children gain a good range of skills for their future learning and their move on to school.” The pre-school, based at Christchurch Hall in Church Road, was told to improve further it should strengthen the sharing of information with other settings children attend, encourage all children's involvement in activities and develop their attention and listening skills further.

AN arson attack at a plastic recycling company next to the Bristol to Bath Railway Path sent a huge column of smoke into the skies above East Bristol. Firefighters from five different fire stations were called in to tackle the blaze at the Toucan Environmental base on the Bridge Road industrial estate between Soundwell and Mangotsfield. The fire affected around 300 containers on the site, which specialises in reconditioning integrated bulk containers and plastic drums. An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said firefighters from as far away as Avonmouth and Yate were called in.They needed breathing apparatus as they tackled the blaze and both Bridge Road and

the cycle path were temporarily closed, although police said the smoke was not toxic. Firefighters also used booms to stop and chemicals from running off into nearby drainage systems. The spokesman confirmed that the fire was being treated as deliberate. Afterwards Toucan Environmental managing director Alex Duck said the fire had caused “huge damage”. Speaking on Facebook, he said: “Thanks for everyone’s concerns this afternoon reference the fire in my yard. It was arson and we have very good CCTV of the two kids involved. It’s going to take a couple of weeks to get back to normal which we will. Huge damage but no one hurt thank goodness."

Hanham Abbots Spring Clean Event It has been noted that Hanham Abbots has been suffering from a litter problem of late and to try to alleviate this, we are holding a Spring Clean event on Saturday 27th April. It would be great if lots of volunteers could get involved this year – even if you decide just to tidy up the area outside your house, then ‘every little helps’ as they say! If you need bags, then these will be available for collection from the pavilion at Hanham Common between 9 and 10am, together with a limited supply of gloves. Please bring along your bags of collected litter (no household waste!) to the pavilion on Hanham Common by 1pm.

Hanham Common Fayre Our annual event will be held on Saturday 18th May from midday until 4pm. There will again be a fun dog show, car boot sale, stalls, children’s rides and classic cars. If you wish to have a stall, the booking form is available from our website www.hanhamabbotspc.org.uk (under parish news/events). Car booters do not need to book, simply turn up on the day and pay on the gate (please see our website for more information). If you have a classic car that you would like to show off, then please email the Clerk giving details of the vehicle, including make, model and age.

2019 Elections Elections are held for town and parish councils every four years and this year, elections will be held on Thursday 2nd May. If you would like to represent your local community, help local people and improve the quality of life in your area then please consider standing for election. Hanham Abbots Parish Council meets on the first Tuesday of every month (excluding August) and has three committees, two of which meet bi-monthly and one every three months. If you would like more information on what is involved in being a parish councillor, please contact the Clerk at the contact details below.

Have your say on new play equipment for Hanham Common Some items of play equipment in the Hanham Common play area are coming to the end of their life and will need to be replaced in the near future. The rubber flooring is also in need of replacement. In order to apply for grants to purchase new items, it would be beneficial if a ‘friends’ group was set up consisting of local residents who have an interest in the type of play equipment that should replace what is currently there. If you would like to be involved in setting up such a group or would like further information, please contact the Clerk.

n MESSAGE FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

I WAS delighted to make my first speech as Minister of State for Universities at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, one of our many higher education institutions helping to educate our next generation of students, continually pushing the boundaries with ground-breaking research, and working closely with businesses to create jobs and help solve some of the greatest challenges of our time. As we prepare to leave the EU, I feel it is important to set out a new vision for our future education, knowledge and skills in a postBrexit Britain. It is more important than ever that our higher education system delivers for all students, of all backgrounds and circumstances, to ensure they receive a top-quality education and a fulfilling university experience that will enrich their lives and future careers. This work will include enhancing student mental health support and improving students’ experience of healthcare and housing support. As the new Universities Minister I am committed to ensuring our

innovative higher education sector remains one that works for everyone, and one we can be proud of in generations to come. Locally, I was also delighted to visit the University of Bristol to learn more about their worldleading research and to witness first-hand how recently announced government investment is being used by the University to develop micro robotic devices that will help repair our underground pipe network. Projects like this one, at one of the key higher education institutions in our region, will help develop technologies which will deliver real-world benefits, boosting job prospects and productivity across our region. I am pleased that after a long campaign, and working locally and nationally, we have been able to secure serious investment into our High Streets, with Kingswood set to benefit from new digital training facilities for residents and young people, as well as new street cleaning tools, and a cash boost to help stabilise our historic Tabernacle site. This investment

Will Writing & Estate Planning

also comes as the Chancellor recently announced a new Future High Streets Fund to invest £675 million. Kingswood High Street is just the start and I will continue to campaign for all our local High Streets to receive support in future.

n NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT

hanham&longwellgreenvoice

Seed packets at the ready! THE month of March is a good time to start sowing some seeds, but with caution! It’s still a little early to sow directly into your plot, the next few weeks can still be a little unforgiving, remember last year? But if you have a sunny window sill, propagator, greenhouse or polytunnel many seeds are happy to be set to work this month. For example, Sweet Peas bring a splash of colour to the garden or allotment; these could have been sown back in October but if not they will catch up with protection as better daylight and some warmer daytime temperatures become apparent. Sweet Peas prefer a deep pot such as root trainers if available, these are quite narrow so about two or three seeds per cell. Alternatively, use three inch pots, these generally are not so deep but wider so place about five or six seeds into each pot. If you’ve not tried it before, help start Broad Beans to germinate by placing some in a small black plastic bag with a light coating of damp compost and place this somewhere warm for a few days. Keep a regular check on them and

when they start to sprout move them individually into six cell trays or pots. If you have any small multi-cell trays that are about 25 or 30mm square then these are ideal to start salad leaf mixtures. Just a few seeds are all that is required per cell. Ensure the compost is compressed well into each cell, water before adding the seed then cover lightly with compost. When the leaves are about 30 to 40mm tall lift them out as a plug and move them into a larger pot and keep protected until the weather is a little warmer for them to go outside. Apart from carrots and parsnips most seeds can be started this way, it gives them a head start with a little warmth and shelter. Similarly, Boltardy beetroot are ideal to get underway this month using six cell trays again. Ensuring the compost is firm and moist, place about four or five seeds to a cell, invariably the seed will multi-sprout so thin to a maximum of five plants to a cell. When about 50mm tall, lift them from the cell as a clump, do not separate and plant them out in April. The plants will all grow together and as they mature, simply harvest one or two at a time from each cluster.

Our planting potatoes trial It’s also worth keeping an eye on the weather forecasts this month to plant out early seed potatoes, after the second week hopefully the risk of any further harsh weather will start to diminish. Many gardeners have their own preferred methods

of planting spuds. Some dig a trench for them, others use a trowel to make a hole about four to six inches deep to pop them in and them scrape soil up around them to make ridges over the row, known as ‘earthing up’. Last year we tried a slightly different approach planting main crop King Edwards and using homemade compost, to be honest the compost wasn’t quite finished but we used it anyway. The surface of the bed was relatively clear of any weeds and it had not been dug over, in fact it had no preparation whatsoever! Taking our seed potatoes we placed each one directly on the surface about 30cm apart, and then using our compost we ‘earthed up’ each row. Little else was done whilst the plants were maturing and the compost although not perfect retained moisture over the coming weeks even though as we all know the weather was extremely hot and dry. By late August the plants had reached their peak and it was time to reveal the results of this trial. The foliage simply pulled away with ease exposing a good clean crop of potatoes on the surface. The conclusion was that the effort to plant the seeds was very little as was the maintenance with no watering. And as the compost covering was only reasonable perhaps better results might have been achieved with some

of better quality or even bagged multi-purpose. But considering the distinct lack of rainfall throughout the growing period the overall final result we think was excellent.

Fancy an plot of your own? If you’ve never grown your own veg and would like to try, taking on your own plot could be an exciting venture. We’ll be the first to admit it’s not always plain sailing and we all accept failures from time to time but generally our efforts are well rewarded with a wide variation of fresh crops. For example a packet of salad leaf seeds as described above will provide a fresh crop for many months for about the same price as you might pay for bag of mixed leaves on your shopping list. Our Association consists of seven sites within the St. George area and if you would like to think about getting started please call in to our shop and speak to our Secretary or email your details and we’ll be in touch. But if you’d rather talk it through over the phone first please give us a call, all our contact details are below. n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM EVENING WI FOLLOWING in the footsteps of Royalty were members of Hanham WI who visited the Bristol Old Vic the day after the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had toured the theatre. Some 25 members from both Hanham branches braved the snowy conditions for a guided tour of this iconic building in King Stre “WE are the champions” rang out around Longwell Green Community Centre as the Hanham branch retained the Mary Laidlaw Skittles Cup in the annual challenge match played against Hanham Natural History Society. The cup is named after Mary Laidlaw who was a very active member of both groups and organised the first challenge match. Both groups are based at Hanham Community Centre and there are several members who hold dual membership. Following her death a few years ago both organisations agreed to continue playing for the cup in her memory. This is a popular social evening and is always well attended by members, family and friends of

both groups. For many years the History Society have held the upper hand in this challenge match but for the two last years, and, more emphatically this year, the WI team have come out on top. This was despite the History Society audacious attempts at some questionable creative scoring methods. Next year independent adjudicators may be brought in to see fair play! An excellent buffet supper, followed by a raffle rounded off a very enjoyable evening. WHO would be so silly as to break open a barrier to enter Syria? Who would be so foolish as to sleep in a tree trunk in freezing temperatures? And, who would dare to try to go around the world on next to nothing? Well, these questions and many more were answered by Pete Strickland in his entertaining and amusing talk to the branch entitled “Round the World on A Shoestring”. Our intrepid adventurer said friendship, kindness and hospitality was truly rewarding and the highlight of their adventure.

LONGWELL GREEN EVENING WI THE SPEAKER at the February meeting of Longwell Green WI was Jeanne Long who in 2016 started a charity called Happy Handbag. The scheme takes donated handbags and fills them with essential hygiene products to help women who are homeless or in other crisis situations. The bags also have a Happy Handbag charm attached which Jeanne says is a sign to the women that someone cares. The organisation takes their donations to groups in Gloucester, Swindon, and Bristol like Missing Link, Help Bristol's Homeless, The Nelson Trust, and Refresh in Bedminster who are responsible for handing out the bags to those in need. The bags contain basics like toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, sanitary items, shower gel and wet wipes. The organisation are now offering other essentials to help the women - a Happy Bag (clean clothes, underwear, shoes, a bin liner to carry sleeping bags, a scarf, gloves and a hat); a Happy Home – (sleeping bag, clean bed linen,

curtains, kitchen wear and towels); a Happy Bowl (washing-up bowl with a plate, mug, dish, cutlery, tea towel, cleaning products, cloths, wipes and black bin liners) and mother & baby bags (essentials for a new baby). It was an incredibly inspiring talk and members were able to get involved by leaving donations of handbags and toiletry items. At our March meeting we will have a talk about the very important work of the RNLI. During April we will be joining the Great British Spring Clean and litter picking around our local area. Upcoming events include a kurling evening, a visit to Savill Garden with a boat trip, a meal at Pomegranate in Keynsham and later in the year we will be having a murder mystery evening. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 986 4782.

n ADVERTISING FEATURE

Transforming the care industry YOUR Care is a family-run agency established in 2014. But it’s not just like any other care agency. Your Care is proud to be different. Not only is it an agency that doesn’t believe in zero-hours contracts, it’s also an agency that’s passionate about looking after clients as if they were members of their own family. In fact, Your Care is so committed to matching the right carer and package to a client, they even look into hobbies and interests so as to create the perfect fit. This way, Your Care can provide the best possible personable care, where the carer and client can build a relationship and receive companionship. Company founder, Tina Westlake, commented: “Sometimes, we all need a little

help. And everyone needs a different level of care, based on their needs. That’s why Your Care works with families, for the clients. As well as working with the elderly, disabled, sensory-impaired and those with learning difficulties, we support people with dementia and their family, too. Continuity of care is really important for us, and it’s reassuring too for those living with dementia.” However, Your Care is about much more than the home care you’d expect. Their carers also support clients with transportation to hospital appointments and social events, housekeeping tasks such as cleaning, washing, shopping for groceries, preparing meals and paying bills, and accompanying clients on days out to provide conversation and companionship.

“We know that trying to hold down a full-time job and care for a family member isn’t easy, so the time you spend is rushed, doing chores. That’s where Your

Care can help. With visits that last for a minimum of two hours, we can do everything, so that the time you spend with your loved ones is always time well-spent,” added Tina.

At Your Care, we believe that the right care assistant really makes a difference. Here’s how we can support you: Helping with the housework Going out for the day Assisting with social events/appointments Your personal care ‘I’d be lost without Your Care’

“My personal assistants are kind, patient and encouraging, I would not be able to leave my flat without their help.” Rachel Wicks

Qualifying event for powerlifting finals A HUSBAND and wife team from Kingswood is organising a qualifying event for the British powerlifting finals which take place in Bristol this summer. Dan Davies and wife Molly, both aged 27, are expecting more than 200 powerlifters from all over the UK at the three-day final which takes place at SBL sports centre in Oldland Common from August 16-18. The regional qualifier, which will be supporting the charity Help For Heroes, will take place at the Ministry of Fitness Gym in Kingswood on April 7. Dan has been lifting competitively since 2014, and last year competed at international level, winning a first place title in both Hungary and Scotland. Wife Molly also competed in the same sport until a spinal injury caused her to take a back seat. She now puts all her energy into looking after their two-year-old son as well as getting involved in organising powerlifting competitions. Dan said it was exciting to be bringing the championships to Bristol and was looking forward to April's qualifying event. He said: “We have 56 lifters all lifting for a chance to qualify for the British finals.

APPLIANCE REPIRS

Dan and wife Molly are bringing the British powerlifting finals to Bristol There are written set goals that they must hit or exceed in order to gain an invite. The three events of powerlifting are squat, bench and deadlift. Qualifiers usually run with around 30-35 lifters but we have a full complement. The rest of the qualifiers running across the UK have similar numbers and full capacity so the British final is going to be a very well attended event.” Dan, a personal trainer, said his powerlifting career really took off in the world championships last September. “I travelled to Eger in Hungary where I came first place in my weight category - this is a huge achievement and not a lot of people are able to say they have gained first place in a world championship in their lifting career. “I then went on to attend the British

BUILDING SERVICES

which was held in Scotland and won best overall male deadlift of the competition, again a massive achievement. “Powerlifting connects people from all walks of life, all body shapes and abilities and creates great bonds and friendships.”
