Council tax to rise by nearly four per cent COUNCIL tax in South Gloucestershire will rise by nearly four per cent in April. Councillors approved a 3.99 rise at a full council meeting at Kingswood Civic Centre on February 12. It means council tax for a Band D property for 2020/21 will rise to £1,543.37, up £59.22 from £1,484.15 last year. A further charge will be added for police and fire services and residents who come under parish councils including Hanham, Hanham Abbots and Oldland will also pay a precept for local services. South Gloucestershire Council will spend almost £232 million on services next year, which will feature initiatives to protect the environment and help local high streets. The rise will include a two per cent precept which will be spent on meeting the growing cost of adult social care services. A further £145 million will be spent on infrastructure such as roads and building projects, including £27.6 million on schools. Overall schools funding

for South Gloucestershire will increase by £11.371 million compared to last year with spending increases to support children with special education needs and disabilities. The council has pledged to deliver at least the minimum per pupil funding of £3,750 for primary and £5,000 for secondary school pupils. Spending plans include a series of initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of council services, including an initial £1.7 million investment to directly respond to the climate emergency with a further £6 million over four years to support various green projects affecting schools, communities and transport. In addition to the £100,000 carried over from last year, there will be £300,000 to support projects to reinvigorate high streets. A total of £30,000 will be available in grants for community groups wishing to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day this year and £130,000 will be set aside to enforce antilittering laws.

Funding for VE Day celebration events COMMUNITY groups have until March 5 to apply for a slice of £30,000 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day. The funding was agreed as part of the budget for 2020/21, which was agreed by Full Council on Wednesday February 12. The first May Bank Holiday this year has been moved by the Government to fall on Friday May 8 to help mark the occasion. Voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations, as well as town or parish councils in South Gloucestershire can all apply for a share of the funding to help them put on events over the bank holiday weekend. Grants are on offer to support events, including publicity costs, PA hire, insurance, marshalling and entertainment. The closing date for applications is noon on March 5 and successful applicants will be notified after April 2. For more information about the grants and how to apply, visit www.southglos.gov.uk/veday75. The application form and guidance is also available from the grants team on 01454 865865, grants@southglos.gov.uk. Cabinet member Rachael Hunt, said: “The anniversary marks an important moment in our country’s history and I know that there are a range of events already being planned.”

Storm drama as tree falls on flats A CHILD had a lucky escape after she was left with only minor injuries when a huge tree came crashing down on a block of flats in Hanham during Storm Dennis. The branches of the beech tree smashed the window of her bedroom where she had been lying on her bed. Fire fighters from Hicks Gate and Kingswood stations were called to the incident at Grange Court just before 7pm on Sunday February 16. The tree had crushed a car which was parked outside the flats as its branches tore down fascias and smashed through windows. Residents were treated for minor injuries by paramedics with 16 people having to leave their homes until a structural engineer could assess the damage.

“On arrival, they found a tree had fallen on to a block of flats and damaged several windows. Crews searched the building and isolated the utilities. “Following discussions between police, fire, and ambulance, four properties were deemed unsafe until assessed by a structural engineer and 16 people were evacuated. “Ambulance crews treated two casualties on the scene for minor injuries and the property was left in the hands of police. "The Red Cross were also in attendance to assist with rehoming.” A spokesman from South Western Ambulance Service said: “We were called on Sunday at 6.55pm about an incident at an address in Hanham, Bristol. "We sent land ambulance crews and specialist paramedics to attend the incident.”

Weather wreaks havoc EMERGENCY services and council crews were kept busy over the two weekends of Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis. South Gloucestershire Council received a total of 28 emergency calls relating to fallen trees before 10am on Sunday February 9, with extra emergency teams deployed to tackle hazards. The following weekend it received 39 emergency requests, including reports of 19 fallen trees and 13 floods. Fire crews from Kingswood and Hicks Gate were also in action, dealing with flooding as well as felled trees. During Storm Ciara, one tree blew down across the Avon Ring Road between the Bromley Heath and Wick Wick roundabouts, bringing traffic to a halt. Drivers came together to push the tree out of the way, clearing one lane before emergency services arrived on the scene.

Company's expansion into green belt approved

A COMPANY has won permission to expand its commercial premises in the green belt at Bitton. Residents and parish councillors opposed the expansion saying it would bring too much extra traffic to the quiet country lanes leading to the site on New Pit Lane. But South Gloucestershire Council granted Shield Logistics consent to build five new industrial units at Redfield Lodge Works saying it would have a “positive impact on the local economy” by “creating rural employment opportunities”. The business is knocking down several “ramshackle” buildings to make way for the new units, four of which will be in a singlestorey terrace, according to officers who recommended the application for approval. The end result will be only “slightly” larger than the existing premises and cause a “slight” increase in light traffic, they said. Their report indicated that building volume would rise by roughly a third, floor area by about 10 per cent, and vehicle movements by an estimated eight per day. But 12 residents and Bitton Parish Council objected to the expansion arguing it was too much for the green belt site and the narrow, country lanes around it. Parish councillors questioned the accuracy of the estimated extra traffic that the industrial expansion would generate. Cllr Sue Hawking told a planning committee on February 6 that the officially designated “quiet lanes” are popular with ramblers and horse riders, but that rush hour traffic was already a “daily nightmare” for residents. “If this goes ahead, it looks as if their quality of life is being ignored for the sake of industrial development,” Cllr Hawking said. Maria Skuse, who has lived in a farmhouse next to the site for nearly 20 years, said that Shield’s plans would bring “no end of misery”. “If this overdevelopment is successful, it will be really visible from our house and

FREE inspections NO call-out fees

Image Google Earth from Redfield Cottage next door and there will also be a real increase in noise which will obviously have a real impact on our lives,” she said. But planning committee members said they felt the application brought controls over the site which would protect the community and the green belt from possible future harm. Councillor Sara Pomfret said the current consent for the “untidy” site permitted “almost any industrial usage” and “almost any number of HGVs”. “This proposal takes away all of that and gives us light industrial [usage] with a few extra cars,” she said. The committee heard that the new development will have parking for up to 30 vehicles and a number of bicycles. It is “not expected” that any heavy-goods vehicles will use the site, according to the officer report. Only “light” industry will be permitted in the new units whereas the existing buildings have consent for “general” industrial use. Landscaping will screen the development

from the surrounding countryside, and the new buildings will be set back from the southern boundary to avoid “issues” with views or privacy for the Grade II listed Redfield Lodge Farmhouse. A new road entrance will improve safety as vehicles access the site from New Pit Lane. Claire Durbin, who spoke on behalf of Shield, said the company’s intention was to update the quality of the buildings to a “modern state” and provide a “well managed and regulated industrial estate”. It had originally applied to build eight new units, a site office and a home on the land but had scaled back its plans on the advice of officers. Councillor Mike Drew said it would be a “gamble” to refuse the application in the hope that no other business would buy the land and exploit the current consent. Committee members voted unanimously to approve the application. By Amanda Cameron, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Tots will never tyre of playing here ... CHILDREN at Hanham Toddlers Pre-school have plenty to smile about – they have just discovered their new-look play area. The pre-school committee, made up of parents, has been busy raising funds to transform the outdoor area at their base at Hanham Methodist

Church in Chapel Road. They collected around £2,000 which has been spent on a sensory trail with pebbles, grass, wood, rope and slate. It also meant they could divide various outside areas so there are separate spaces for sand, water and mud play as well as a woodwork section with real tools. The work complements a pole jungle area, unveiled last year, which has proved popular with the toddlers, and huge truck tyres which were donated to the pre-school. Managers Lorraine Bunting and Sally Rouch said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to the parents and committee for their support over recent months with fundraising events, alongside a generous donation from GKN Aerospace. “Monies raised have been used to install a 'pedi-sensory walk' and large construction area ensuring our outdoor provision caters for all children's holistic development.”

Lloyds to close branch HANHAM'S main shopping area has been dealt a major blow with the announcement that Lloyds will close this summer, leaving the area without a bank. Lloyds Banking Group said the branch, at 41 High Street, will close as part of its latest nationwide cull. The news has been met with dismay from community leaders and customers and comes after the closure of the High Street's NatWest and HSBC. Customers wishing to visit a branch will have to travel to Kingswood once Lloyds closes on June 3. It will leave Hanham with just one cashpoint at the Co-op, with the Post Office available for certain transactions including cash deposits, card withdrawals and balance enquiries. It is understood the news hit staff like a lightning bolt, who believed the branch to be safe as it was always busy. Traders, many of whom bank with Lloyds for convenience, have already met with Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore to discuss launching a petition to persuade the banking heavyweight to have a change of heart. South Gloucestershire Hanham councillor Brenda Langley said: “Right now the current situation will be disappointing but going forward, we will campaign for services to return to Hanham High Street, in whatever form and we hope residents will support us in this endeavour.” Councillor June Bamford said: “It is a shame that at a time

when the council is putting even more resource into supporting our high streets, supporting initiatives such as “Love our High Streets”, through financial support to local traders and millions of pounds in capital investments through the budget, that an important local service like the local banks are nowhere to be found.” Councillor Jason Pearce added: “When most people are turning to online banking, it is hardly a surprise that banks might think the need for a local branch is reducing, but there are still many who rely on having those local services nearby particularly elderly residents. We will have one cashpoint left on the High Street but it is not enough for a vibrant local community like Hanham.” Councillor Ian Richardson, chair of Hanham Parish Council, said: “Another sad loss for Hanham High Street. Lloyds is the last remaining bank in Hanham and its loss will have a detrimental impact for the local community. This leaves one cashpoint in the High Street and no local banking facilities for personal or business customers.” According to Lloyds, 439 customers use the Hanham branch on a regular monthly basis with counters 20 per cent quieter than a year ago. Cashpoint transactions were down by two per cent, although business customers were using

the facility more, with a seven per cent rise in usage. The 45-54 age group use the bank the most at 18 per cent, with 16 per cent of its customers aged 75 and over. Across the country, a total of 56 Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches will shut between April and October 2020. This will include Lloyds in Downend which is scheduled to close on May 6. According to Lloyds, the number of personal banking customers using the Downend branch had dropped by 35 per cent, with business customers down by five per cent. Lloyds Banking Group has already closed 151 branches between January 2018 and August 2019. These included the branch in Staple Hill. A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “We are committed to having the largest branch network in the UK and, in addition to our branches, all our customers can also use the Post Office to access their banking locally, alongside our mobile branches which visit many rural communities. "We have confirmed that a number of branches will close between April and October this year. This is in response to changing customer behaviours and the reduced number of transactions being made in branches.”

“I WISH the staff the very best for the future - they were all very friendly. The only reason why I opened a bank account with Lloyds Bank is because they have a branch on the High Street meaning it is easy for me to deposit cash into my account. “Other business owners on the High Street also chose Lloyds for this reason, but we are now left without a place to easily deposit cash on the High Street. However, I am not surprised by Lloyds Bank’s decision to close both the Hanham and Downend branches. High streets are changing and bank branches have been closing down for years. Skidmore loses Government role Cuppas of cheer

CHRIS Skidmore has said he has been promoted “to be a better dad” after being sacked from the Government. The Kingswood MP’s former job as Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation was abolished in Boris Johnson’s February reshuffle, with the brief now being split into two roles. The Voice asked Mr Skidmore, who has been MP for Kingswood since 2010 and was re-elected with an increased majority last December, to comment on his departure from the government. He has not replied but has wished his successors – junior education minister Michelle Donelan and junior business, energy and industrial strategy minister Amanda Solloway – good luck on Twitter, where he also published pictures of himself enjoying time with his children. In one he described his new role as ‘minister for bathtime in the Skidmore household. Mr Skidmore said: “Got a promotion in the #reshuffle to be a better Dad with more time to spend with this gorgeous little one...Thanks everyone who I’ve had the chance to work with and the civil service teams that have supported me – you have all been amazing.” Mr Skidmore and his wife Lydia have three children: Clemmie,Henry and baby Ottilie, who was born during the general election campaign last year. The biggest shock of the reshuffle was the

departure of Chancellor Sajid Javid, who quit after being given the choice of sacking his team of advisers or resigning. Mr Javid, 50, grew up in Bristol and in the early 80s attended Stockwell Hill Comprehensive School, which became Downend Comprehensive School in 1982. After resigning he said: “It has been a privilege to serve as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Prime Minister & government will continue to have my full support from the backbenches.” MP's column: Page 24

AEK Boco awaits decision RESIDENTS who fought against plans for a “mini football stadium” in Hanham will find out this month if the restrictions placed on the proposals will be relaxed. AEK Boco FC was given permission last July to put up four 18.2m floodlights and build two 50-space spectator stands. However councillors sitting on South Gloucestershire Council's Spatial Planning Committee told the club they could only use the floodlights at certain times. They also said that instead of putting up a 1.8m fence as requested, the barrier must be no higher than 1.2m. The condition effectively dashed Boco's aspirations of playing in the Toolstation Western League because FA rules say fencing should be a minimum of 1.83m. In response the club applied to have the restrictions lifted, and the council had to go back to the drawing board, giving

residents the chance to comment on relaxing the conditions. A further consultation exercise drew dozens of letters both in support and opposition, prompting Hanham councillor June Bamford to “refer” the application. This means the decision will not be made by a council officer but will be taken by the authority's development management committee when it sits on March 5. Cllr Bamford said: “There had been a high level of objections to the original application and subsequently to this variation to conditions that I felt it appropriate for this application to return to the planning committee for further scrutiny and decision.” Many residents living near the Greenbank Road site had objected to the club's expansion plans, fearing noise, light pollution and the loss of public open space. Resident Kim Madan said:

“Residents will potentially be open to games seven days a week with the lights on until 10.30pm at night, which does not consider young children's bedtimes or shift workers, or the noise and disturbance we will be continually subjected to. There is no protection for residents at all.” She added: “South Glos cannot give an unbiased decision given that AEK Boco maintains the site under their lease agreement.” But supporters say the club provides an opportunity for children and adults to take part in sport and lead a healthy life. Hanham resident Theresa Coles said: “I have a son who plays for the club's U13s and has played for the club since the age of five. It is a great club to play for with lots of support for players of all ages. “It would be a great opportunity for teams to play in the floodlit pitch in order to develop their skills.”

Georgina named employee of the year EDDIE 'the Eagle' Edwards was on hand to present a worker at Longwell Green's Active Lifestyle Centre with an Employee of the Year award. The former plasterer who shot to fame in 1988 when he represented GB in the Calgary Winter Olympics handed a gong to Georgina Morgan during an awards ceremony run by Circadian Trust, which operates Active Lifestyle Centres across South Gloucestershire. The awards celebrated the hard work and achievements of staff who work at the five centres. More than 250 people from across the business attended the event, with 14 special awards to those making a difference in the community. Georgina, pictured third from right, was described as a key player: “Georgina has gone above and beyond in her work, providing support at all hours, across all areas of the

business, and recently covered two separate job roles in order to assist a colleague who was unable to work due to illness. “She has been full of enthusiasm and a smile for every colleague and customer she meets throughout all of her hard work.” The Chairman’s Special Award was given to Martyn

Hinam, the manager of Kingswood Active Lifestyle Centre. Martyn has been involved in a number of different projects, from a multi-millionpound expansion of the Longwell Green centre to supporting the formation of Kingswood’s deaf awareness community campaign to helping to introduce a breastfeeding-friendly zone to

the Kingswood centre. Ben Beasley, Circadian Trust’s director of commercial development, said: “It’s great to be able to celebrate our successes with the whole team. We started these awards seven years ago to recognise the hard-working people who believe in and deliver our mission to inspire active lifestyles.”

Nonnie is 100 THERE was an extra special celebration in Hanham recently when great grandmother Nonnie Bishop celebrated her 100th birthday. Nonnie was born in Worle, a village just outside Weston Super Mare, where she lived until 2017. After husband George passed away, Nonnie made the move to be nearer her family in Hanham and settled at Kift Lodge, a retirement home near Hanham Common run by the charity Abbeyfield. Nonnie left Worle School at 15 and went to work in an office. She later went to typing school, where she met her future husband. She married George at 20 but continued to live with her parents when he was called up to fight in the war soon after their wedding.

Sadly, Nonnie only saw her husband occasionally during those years. “The year we got married, George went to Dunkirk,” said Nonnie. “The country was in a terrible state and we were expecting an invasion. I kept myself busy when he was away and was working two or three jobs to keep busy. But it was a lonely life and you couldn't go out in the evening.” When George returned from the war, they lived with his parents for a few years before finally moving into their own home. Nonnie and her husband

went on to have one son, Jim, and now Nonnie has moved to be closer to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she’s able to enjoy regular visits from them. “I moved to Abbeyfield after George died in 2017. My family were travelling to Weston to see me but it's much easier, now that I'm in Hanham. “Everyone is very cheerful at Abbeyfield and I very much like the area. All the staff are really nice and you're friendly with everybody. At about 10.30am every day we have a coffee and a natter, and we laugh about nothing sometimes. We see each other at meal times which is nice and stops you feeling lonely. I like to join in the quizzes – I’m good at that because of my age and I think the other residents like it if I'm on their team!” Nonnie celebrated her 100th birthday with a good oldfashioned knees up. “We had a lovely party here at the house. The room was full of people. The other residents were there, all the staff and my family. It was wonderful.”

New kit for Christ Church Primary SPORTY youngsters from a Hanham school are warming up for pitch action now they have a smart new kit. The school football team at Christ Church CE Primary School was presented with the bright blue strip by the Kumon Study Centre in Hanham and Whitehall-based shop Professional Sport and Fitness. The sponsorship agreement initially formed when headteacher Neil McKellarTurner approached Kumon instructor Nikki Warr and her husband, who runs the shop. The kit sponsorship is part of the Kumon centre’s ongoing relationship with the school to support young people in the community to keep their minds and bodies active. Nikki said the partnership is a great opportunity to give back to students at Christ Church, many of whom are enrolled at her maths and English skills

Quarry Court

study centre, which is based at Hanham Youth Centre in the High Street. She said: “The children were so excited to receive their new kits and couldn't wait to try them on. I’m happy to have been part of that experience. “Sports was a big part of my life growing up, so it was a privilege to be asked to sponsor a local school kit. Young people

are used to seeing their sporting heroes wearing sponsor logos which makes them feel special and proud that others are supporting them. If you look like a team, you feel like a team and play like a team. Just like Kumon, sports encourage children to develop fundamental life skills like self-discipline, perseverance and confidence, and so we are proud to be able to

put our name behind this.” Mr McKellar-Turner said: “We are very grateful to both Professional Sport and Fitness and the Kumon Centre in Hanham for providing us with, and sponsoring, our brand new football kit. “As a school, we are in the process of developing a range of sporting opportunities for our pupils; keeping active is an essential habit for a healthy life and so sport and PE in school play a key role in this. We are also looking forward to engaging in more competitive sport and games so that we give our pupils the chance to represent their school as well as showcase their skills and talents. “Having a new school kit will only help to give our pupils a sense of identity and build team spirit - they are very excited about being able to wear their new colours for their next football match.”

Keeping a weather eye on our city THIS atmospheric image shot from Troopers Hill was one of the winning entries in a city-wide photographic competition. It was taken by Pete Horsham from Barton Hill for Wild Bristol: Winter run by Bristol Energy, a national gas and electricity company owned by Bristol City Council. The energy provider invited photographers of all ages and abilities to share their wintery snaps taken across the region during the month-long competition, which closed on February 23. They were encouraged to share their images on social media to celebrate Bristol's natural beauty. Weekly winners were awarded tickets to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the M Shed in Bristol. Bristol Energy managing director Marek Majewicz said the entries “highlight how we must work together to protect the planet, combat climate change and support our city’s wildlife and areas of nature”.

Gift shop owner makes award finals What is happening to our weather? WHAT is happening to our weather? The recent storms caused first by the cyclone Ciara and then storm Dennis have affected the whole of the UK, some parts much worse than others. And with storm Ellen on the way it’s not finished yet. Seven weeks in, and weather records are already being broken in 2020. According to the Met Office: “2019 was a year of extremes: record-breaking heat and rain, along with notable spells of cold and windy weather have all been prominent...with two all-time temperature records: Warmest winter day on record: 21.2 °C recorded at Kew Garden on February 26 Hottest day on record: 38.7 °C recorded at Cambridge University Botanic Gardens on July 25 The Met Office report for 2019 makes very interesting reading: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/ about-us/press-office/news/ weather-and-climate/2019/ weather-overview-2019 Can we, the human race, afford to ignore these signs? There are still many individuals and governments who seem not to be getting the message that we need to do something (lots of somethings) and act now. Climate change does not just affect plants and animals, it also threatens the human race. People die in storms and lose their lives in wildfires. Farmers lose crops that rot or burn. People lose their homes and their livelihoods. Well done to those who are valiantly making meaningful changes in the way you live –

HANHAM shop owner Nicola Bartlett has been shortlisted for a business award. Nicola, who runs the Eclectic Gift Shop in the High Street, has been nominated for Micro Business of the Year by the Federation of Small Businesses. The award celebrates businesses with fewer than 10 employees that are punching above their weight. Judges will be looking for businesses that have demonstrated strong revenue growth and a product or service of a quality that stands above competitors. They will also be interested in how innovative and creative the business is. Nicola said: “I’m thrilled to be shortlisted because they had a record breaking number of entries and it was really difficult for the judges. I’m really looking forward to the award ceremony. It’s been such a brilliant start to the year, and following the most successful Christmas in the shop, it’s been all systems go. I’m very proud to work with so many talented small business owners and to provide a place for them to be able to sell their work all year round.” The ceremony was due to take place on February 26 at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton.

keep going, keep coming up with new ideas and keep sharing with and encouraging those around you. I was in Bromsgrove before Christmas and came across this board (see photo) outside a shop which greatly encouraged me. I stuck my head round the door to ask if I could take the photo and was invited in by two delightful young women who were thrilled that I’d noticed and wanted to share it with others. They were running a shop where you could take and fill up your own containers with eco-friendly liquids, cleaning fluids, shampoos etc, and also loose nuts, unwrapped bread and cakes and unwrapped fruit and veg. We spent a very happy 15 minutes chatting and encouraging each other. Look out for shops in our area that are doing similar things. Next month April 22 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. I had not heard of it until very recently. Check out their website for some ideas on how we can all make an impact. https://www. earthday.org/earth-day-2020/ Stay safe and have some fun finding new ways of helping our planet to survive a little longer. n AROUND THE WIs

Longwell Green WI

OUR walking group had a different start to the year with a visit to Arnos Vale Cemetery. We had a guided walk around this old and fascinating cemetery. Some people may remember that at one time this had fallen badly into disrepair but now, thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Arnos Vale group is gradually being restored and is a lovely place to walk around. There are many interesting and important Bristolians buried there and we spent an enthralling if cold couple of hours walking round followed by a delicious lunch in the café. The frost and mist did make for some very atmospheric photos though! Our February meeting sees a talk about reducing food waste from Sarah Adler and at our March meeting we will be hearing from the Taxi Driver Poet James Haddow. Upcoming events are trips to the Brecon Beacons and Aston Potteries and Gardens and the first of our social suppers at Tamarind restaurant in Downend. Our members now participate in three book clubs, a craft club, a walking group, a drama group, a skittles group, a knitting club and regular social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel coffee shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat.

Longwell Green WI meet on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 986 4782. Sandra Hill

Hanham Afternoon WI

OUR February meeting was held the day after Storm Ciara hit the United Kingdom. A surprisingly large number of our members braved the elements to join in the afternoon of yoga. Yoga teacher Vivien Tallis-Evans came to show us some exercises we could easily do and explained the benefits of yoga. An ancient form of exercise, yoga focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing which can in turn boost both physical and mental well being. Classes can be joined and enjoyed at any age, from children through to people of advanced years. Studies have shown that yoga can be helpful for people experiencing anxiety and when in stressful situations. Being able to participate in “mindfulness” teaches how to cope and how to get into a “better place.” Mind over matter thoughts create physiological reactions. We were invited to join in some

simple moves which could be done whilst sitting of standing. Breathing in the correct way is very important to produce positive results. It was lovely to see our ladies enthusiastically and actively getting involved in the stretching, twisting and bending exercises. Our thanks to Vivien for an insightful and very interesting talk. The tea, coffee and biscuits which followed were a well earned and welcome reward after the exertions of the afternoon. Our new Walking Club will be taking its first walk at the end of this month, so weather permitting, I should be able to report more next month. The five resolutions being taken forward to the annual NFWI meeting in June were explained to the members who were subsequently able to make their choices by voting slips. The WI continues to campaign for injustices and good causes. The next meeting will be held at Hanham Community Centre on the March 9 (second Monday in the month) at 1.30pm. We are expecting a talk about the History of Chocolate Tasting, entitled Cadbury/Fry Pick and Mix. New members are always welcome and if you are interested in visiting us, please get in touch with Liz (our president) on 0117 961 1583. Ann Baulch

JO Brand’s immortal words “Show us your bakes” was the phrase of the day when, as you’ve probably guessed, the first event of the month was our version of the BakeOff – Cake Week. About a dozen members attended a session, organised by “Sticky Fingers” to try their hand at cake decorating. Gregory Scott, owner of the Hanham-based bakery and skilled cake decorator,

Going to the dogs – that was our February meeting. Well, not quite, as the dogs came to us when two marvellous ladies from the Guide Dogs Association brought along a couple of guide dogs to help illustrate their interesting talk. Heather, pictured, and Monica joined us with their dogs Vincy and Murray who proved to be the stars of the night. Vincy is Heather’s working guide dog and Murray is an ambassador for the Association. They explained how a dog is trained and monitored from a puppy.c This whole process costs around £50,000 per dog and is not always successful. Leisure centre teams up with surgeries LONGWELL Green Active Lifestyle Centre has partnered with GP surgeries to relaunch a scheme that helps and supports people with medical or long-term conditions to become more active. The Healthy Lifestyle Referral Scheme has been developed for adults who are living with, or at risk of developing, a medical condition and qualify as inactive. A similar referral service was previously run by South Gloucestershire Council, until it was decommissioned in 2017. The Longwell Green centre is one of five Active Lifestyle Centres in the district to have since taken on the mantle, working with both South Gloucestershire Council and local GP surgeries to establish the scheme. Currently, one in four adults in South Gloucestershire are classed as physically inactive, achieving less than 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week, and as a result are at a much greater risk of developing serious chronic diseases. The scheme aims to address this by providing individuals with a health and wellbeing consultation and on-going support in achieving their personal goals throughout a 12-week programme. The scheme also supports the

development of condition-specific exercise classes run by specialists, including sessions for those living with osteoarthritis or Parkinson’s. Aiming to promote an active mind as well as an active body, these group exercise sessions provide a social space for people to meet and chat, often with a common health goal. Other referral schemes run in the UK have

relied on only GPs for referrals. The Healthy Lifestyle Referral Scheme is also open to referrals from other health professionals, such as specialist nurses or physiotherapists. This is to target those who are inactive but do not have regular contact with their GP. Other Active Lifestyle Centres are located in Bradley Stoke, Kingswood, Thornbury and Yate.

New gas buses unveiled RESIDENTS in Hanham and Longwell Green can now travel a lot greener with the introduction of new gas-powered buses. First West of England have unveiled 27 biomethane-fuelled vehicles which have replaced buses on some routes in the areas. The striking burgundycoloured buses run on the 42, 42A, 43, 44 and 45 services and are part of a fleet of 77 gas buses based at its Lawrence Hill depot. Over the coming months a further 67 will be introduced across east Bristol. First says the new buses will reduce emissions by 95 per cent and give customers a much improved on-board experience, with USB charging points and modern, comfortable interiors. The buses are part of First's efforts to meet Clean Air Zone requirements proposed by Bristol City Council.

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

HE beginning of a new season brings fresh news of improvements for our area, with the recently approved South Gloucestershire Council budget promising to deliver record investments to support residents and infrastructure across the district. I was pleased to see the council’s new budget reflects residents’ priorities and keeps the focus on improving our services – with a record amount being invested to maintain and upgrade the road network, extra school funding, and rolling out a tougher enforcement approach against littering. An extra £400,000 is also being made available to extend support to more of our high streets, learning from the exciting work being carried out in Kingswood as the pilot ‘Love Our High Streets’ project. I also welcome the news that £30,000 in grants will be made available to support community groups who wish to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day this May. I was also delighted to hear

about the Government’s plans for a revolution in transport which will see residents benefit from a more modern network, thanks to a £5 billion package aimed at transforming buses and cycling. This will help deliver more affordable and reliable bus services and new dedicated cycle routes for the area, making our town centres safer. I will be campaigning to ensure we get our fair share of this investment locally. I am always keen to hear from residents about their concerns and ideas on improvements to our infrastructure and have recently met with the Chair of the South Gloucestershire Over 50s Forum to discuss transport issues and how we can improve access for elderly residents, and I look forward to raising this and other concerns in a meeting with the Transport Secretary soon. As ever if there is anything you would like to raise with me please do not hesitate to get in touch with me on chris.skidmore. mp@parliament.uk or phone my office on 0117 9081524.

Jack Fry received a broken nose, cut to his left eye and a broken collar bone during a game with Frampton Athletic on January 25. The game was abandoned in the second half following the incident, in which Frampton player Liam Harper also sustained facial injuries. The club is holding a fundraiser to support Jack as he has had to take several weeks off work. The bingo night, with prizes and raffle, takes place at Vicarage Road pavilion in Hanham on Friday February 28 at 8pm.
