Locals cry foul over 'football stadium' RESIDENTS living near football club AEK BOCO's base in Hanham have warned they will fight tooth and nail to stop plans for what they call a 'budding football stadium'. The club is drawing up proposals to put up floodlights around the main pitch at Greenbank Playing Field and install two spectator stands to accommodate around 100

people, with up to 50 seats and 50 standing spaces. They say the plans would enable the club to progress and argue the impact would be minimal as the floodlights would only be switched on during Saturday match days and one midweek evening. But many people living nearby say the floodlights are too close to local homes and would "adversely

affect" their quality of life. AEK BOCO, which is the largest FA community club in the region with nearly 650 players representing 41 teams, revealed the plans at a public meeting at the club's pavilion in April. About 100 people, including Hanham councillors John Goddard and June Bamford, packed into the main room to Turn to Page 28

King's Oak rated Good by Ofsted again THE expansion of King’s Oak Academy in Kingswood to include a primary phase has been given the thumbs-up by Ofsted. A team from the education watchdog visited the school, which now has 845 pupils aged four to seven and 11 to 16, and judged it to remain Good in all areas. The inspectors were impressed with the improvements since the arrival of the principal, Richard Clutterbuck in 2016, and said these had led to a steady, long-term rise in the quality of education across the school. They described the primary phase, known as the Acorn, which is now in its third year, as thriving, commenting that staff had high expectations and leadership was strong. Ofsted noted that the standards of behaviour in the school had improved significantly over the last few years and said that safeguarding

systems throughout the school were strong. "The vast majority of pupils

move around the school sensibly and treat each other with warmth and good humour," the report

said. “Pupils’ attitudes to work are generally positive. They are punctual to lessons and come to school expecting to work." To improve further, Ofsted said the school should focus on raising levels of attendance and redoubling efforts to tackle persistent absence; improve communication with parents; and ensure that all teachers had consistently high expectations. The support and challenge given to the school's leaders by the academy council and the Cabot Learning Federation were highlighted. Mr Clutterbuck said: “I am really pleased and proud that King's Oak Academy is rated as a ‘Good’ Ofsted graded school, particularly under this framework which has raised the bar from the 2013 inspection. Reflecting on King's Oak and its place in the community, this is also good news for Kingswood and South Gloucestershire."

Nicola is Labour’s choice for Kingswood LABOUR has selected its candidate to fight for Kingswood seat in the next general election. More than 130 Labour Party members packed the community hall in Longwell Green to vote for Nicola Bowden-Jones, an NHS mental health specialist and Bristol City councillor representing the ward of Frome Vale. Nicola, who secured a landslide victory, said: "I feel very honoured to have the overwhelming backing of Labour members in Kingswood. We have a strong and effective team to ensure we make Kingswood Labour again and elect an MP who works for the many and not the few." The current Kingswood MP is Conservative Chris Skidmore who was first elected in 2010. Mr Skidmore took the seat from

Labour's Roger Berry who held it since 1992. Nicola added: "My priorities will include providing a fair settlement for local schools, defending our NHS from cuts and privatisation and highlighting the plight of children with special educational needs."

Does orchestra strike a chord? WOULD you like to join a forward-thinking orchestra which raises thousands of pounds for local good causes? Longwell Green Orchestra is a community orchestra that brings amateur players together to enjoy light classical, musical and film based music, as well as support the community through concerts for charities such as Above and Beyond and Cancer Research. Having appointed a new conductor, Paul Hemmings, the orchestra is looking to recruit new members at an open rehearsal on May 24 as it works towards its centenary in three years' time. The orchestra was established in 1921, when Alfred Lovell, a cellist, and a few other musicians began to accompany hymns sung at a men's bible class. The group became known as the brotherhood orchestra, and began to rehearse every Thursday. It has grown into an orchestra of about 35 musicians, aged from 14-80. Rehearsals are still every Thursday evening from 7.30-9.30pm at Longwell Green Community Centre. The open rehearsal takes place from 7.30-9.30pm on Thursday May 24 at Longwell Green Community Centre. The orchestra welcomes a wide range of abilities, from those who are still having lessons and working through their grades, to players who are music teachers themselves. Secretary Deborah Pollinger encouraged musicians to pop along to the open rehearsal or contact the orchestra for more information via email: contact@longwellgreenorchestra.org.uk

Ex-choir master jailed Bandit the dog joins over child sex abuse police drugs raid

A FORMER choir master from Warmley who sexually abused two boys has been jailed for eight-and-half years. Richard Lucas, of Victoria Road, was convicted of 11 counts of indecent assault on the boys. The offences happened in the 1980s and 1990s. He was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on April 9. The 68-year-old met the victims through his position as choir master at the All Saints United Church in Longwell Green and also in his capacity as a private tutor. Both of the victims were abused over the course of several months. Investigating officer DC Clare Ball said: "Richard Lucas was calculating and used his position of trust to select boys he could manipulate and abuse. "Both victims said the abuse they suffered robbed them of their childhoods, affected their education and continues to impact on them in their adult life. "I’d like to thank both of them for the incredible resilience they’ve shown in reliving their ordeals and for supporting our investigation. "I’d also like to thank the safeguarding lead at the church and our partner agencies for the support they’ve given us throughout this inquiry. "No sentence will ever repair the emotional damage caused by these crimes but I hope both victims will be able to find some form of closure." Following the hearing, one of the victims released a statement. He said: "This has been a long journey of burying my head in the sand and trying to live with the pain and hurt caused to me by Richard Lucas and a

Richard Lucas false belief that if I ignored the past, somehow the events never occurred. "I want him to understand how his actions destroyed and damaged an impressionable child. However, in the end, this child became a man and found the strength to come forward. "The abuse has affected my confidence, the relationship with my own son and my current relationship. "But it’s important to understand that the individuals who hurt children in his way can be brought to justice, even though you may never completely heal from your ordeal.Today, I feel I can begin to rebuild my life somehow. "I’d like to thank Avon and Somerset Police, including DC Clare Ball and DC Sandy Osborne. The police were on my side and I felt fully supported throughout the process and believed me from the beginning." If you have any information for the investigation team, please call DC Clare Ball on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5217131857.

A TEENAGER has been arrested on suspicion of dealing cannabis after a raid on a house in Emersons Green. A police dog was used to sniff out a suspected stash of the Class B drug as officers searched a house in Colliers Break on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 18. Cash and drug-related equipment were also seized by police, who arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of possessing cannabis with intent to supply. He was later released but remains under investigation. Avon and Somerset police said the operation involved neighbourhood and response officers, volunteer special constables and specialist search dog Bandit, pictured. On the same afternoon an address in nearby Lyde Green

was also searched. Another man is due to attend a police station after being found in possession of a small amount of cannabis during the operation. Neighbourhood PC James Rochford said: "The community has been reporting issues with people coming and going at all hours. We're grateful for the information they have been giving us.It can sometimes take us a while to build the evidence we need to get a warrant from the court but I hope this activity will show that we’re listening and acting on their information."

Burglars sent to jail TWO burglars have been jailed after being convicted of offences in Emersons Green including a break-in at the village hall. Craig Walters, 35, of Ashley Road, Bristol, and Lee Hucker, 32, of The Hawthornes, Staple Hill, were both sentenced to four years and six months at Bristol Crown Court. Walters admitted five counts of burglary and one count of aggravated vehicle taking while Hucker admitted two counts of burglary and was found guilty of a third count following a trial. All the offences happened in January.

Slavery helpline receives nearly 4,000 calls A UK-WIDE helpline received a total of 3,710 calls about modern slavery during its first year of operation. In 2017, the Modern Slavery Helpline took calls indicating a total of 4,886 potential victims in situations of modern slavery from 94 different nationalities. The helpline is operated by Unseen, a Bristol-based charity that is dedicated to tackling slavery. Calls are made by members of the public

wanting to report a suspicious situation, frontline workers and potential victims wanting guidance, help and advice and businesses wanting information about potential forced labour situations. Andrew Wallis OBE, CEO of Unseen said: “It has been a landmark year for Unseen and one that has clearly highlighted the ongoing need for a national helpline that can genuinely deal with all aspects of modern

slavery in a professional, caring and knowledgeable manner. Our actions are directly supporting people out of exploitation and we must continue to provide a service that puts the victim at the heart of what we do.” From the calls received, the helpline made a total of 1,442 referrals to other agencies and organisations during the year, including every police force in the UK, the National Crime Agency, a range of NGOs and the

Building friendships across generations NURSERY children and residents at a Hanham residential care home have been enjoying blossoming friendships as part of a scheme to provide benefits for both generations. The children from Mama Bear’s Hanham Hall nursery and residents from Beeches Care Home in High Street have built strong relationships in recent months and particularly enjoyed their most recent catch-up when the children introduced their new friends to the nursery group’s mascot, Mama Bear herself. Everyone also enjoyed playing musical instruments, dancing and singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Nursery manager Hannah Lark said: "It is wonderful to see the friendships developing

between the children and the residents at Beeches Care Home. "Schemes like this have been found to improve the mental and physical health of the elderly as well as developing children’s independence and confidence as they learn to play with new people, and help to improve their language skills. "It is a pleasure to watch everyone interacting with each other, sharing experiences and learning new things. It was particularly lovely this week when Mama Bear showed up to surprise the children and the residents! Chris leads clean-up A NOTORIOUS litter-strewn part of Longwell Green has been cleaned up as part of a campaign to spruce up the district. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore led a team of councillors who litter picked at a footpath between Asda’s Longwell Green store and Aspects Leisure Park. The effort was launched as part of South Gloucestershire Council’s Spring Clean Campaign. Mr Skidmore said: "Our fantastic communities here in South Gloucestershire can often be blighted by litter strewn across our roads, parks and highways. It would be a great thing for our area if we all thought about the impact dropping litter can have and the time and resources it could save our community in clean up days

MP Chris Skidmore (third from left) leads a team of councillors on a clear-up mission and costs. "The level of litter along this stretch of footpath has been a particular local concern and so I was pleased to lead a team to clean the area up. The team collected 10 bags of rubbish." Longwell Green councillor

and deputy council leader Toby Savage, who is pictured far right, added: "Our 2018 Spring Clean Campaign is underway and we want to make it the biggest yet, with more community groups and individuals joining in than ever before.

"The council can provide free bin bags, gloves, and the necessary equipment to help make picking up litter easier. These efforts come on top of additional resources the council is investing to combat littering."

School revamp brings historic pavilion back to life WHITEHALL Primary School is celebrating the completion of its £6 million expansion project, which will enable it to take in more pupils. The work involved refurbishment of the historic pavilion adjoining the school and a new extension to provide extra classrooms, with the two buildings joined by a glass bridge. Existing classrooms have also been made larger, and the school has an impressive new entrance. The project, by architects White Design, was carried out for Bristol City Council by construction firm Skanska. It means the school can now take in up to 630 children aged four to 11. Whitehall is rated outstanding by the education watchdog Ofsted and places are in demand: the primary received 270 applications for 90 places for September 2018 and only those living within 600 metres of the school were successful. The pavilion was built to benefit workers at the Packers chocolate factory in Greenbank. In World War One, it became a military hospital for up to 100 wounded soldiers. Most recently it was used as a social club for the Old Georgians rugby club, and it was not until the facelift began and interior walls and ceilings were removed that the

original domed ceiling was uncovered and painstaking restoration undertaken. The finishing touch is the spectacular stage curtains, which depict important scenes from the school and the area’s history.

They provided a backdrop for a celebration assembly, attended by the Lord Lieutenant Peaches Golding and the Lord Mayor Lesley Alexander. Guests, staff and pupils watched a film made by children about the building and were entertained by the school choir. Head teacher Sarah Allen thanked all who had contributed to the project. She said afterwards: “The local community has been very supportive of our expansion. The Edwardian building, which houses an enormous concert hall with stage, has an interesting history and has been used by those who have lived and worked in Whitehall for many years, we are so delighted that this can continue. Our school has been transformed by the works and the light, modern teaching spaces will be enjoyed by generations to come.” The pavilion hall refurbishment includes a kitchen and the facilities will be available for hire by community members. John Brennan, Skanska’s project director, said: “The refurbishment of the pavilion has brought an important local building back into use, and it has been joined by a new building to create a number of bright, modern learning spaces.”

n LETTERS Does Hanham need more homes? DO we need at least 1,300 new homes in Hanham and Longwell Green? Oh, hang on, I feel unwell, I will phone the doctors for an appointment. No problem, I can fit you in next month, sir. Sorry for the delay it’s due to all the new patients from the new houses. Oh hang on it might get worse and I will need to go to hospital. No, that won’t happen, sir, there are no beds. That would have nothing to do with all the hospitals they have closed would it? They only closed a few, sir, Manor Park, Keynsham, the General, St Martin's, Barrow Gurney, Ham Green and Frenchay (to name but a few). Well, at least the commute to work will be easier, with the improved public transport, together with the new roads. Oh, but I only dreamt that. It was probably in the same dream that the kids could go to the school of their choice, which wasn’t over crowded with a poor Ofsted rating.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

It’s time for the government to wake up, including local government. We live on an island which is overcrowded. It’s time to take control and get a grip. Keith Fine Hanham

M-way 'slow' lane full of potholes SO many drivers still use lane two on motorways (commonly known as the middle lane), even though, at last, it is now illegal unless absolutely necessary, and they should use lane one where possible, moving out only to overtake. But as a mainly lane one user I realise why lane two is so favoured - it's because lane one is the most damaged of all by potholes and is a veritable obstacle course! So lane two is actually safer! Alan Elkan

Limit covers all shops' car parks IS anyone interested in the parking issue at Gallagher Retail Park, Longwell Green? This free car park is charging £100 fine for over three hours which includes ALL the car parks in the retail area. So if you move about from one to another you still get fined if you exceed three hours. If you Google the retail park

17 and ParkingEye Ltd you will see many many people have been hit on. The retailers say it is outside their control. The council says nothing they can do about it. I have correspondence to share if anyone wants it. David Torpy Editor's note: If you would like to be put in touch with Mr Torpy email news@hanham andlongwellgreenvoice.co.uk

Variety spectacular A GOOD old-fashioned variety show with something for everyone, that’s how West Country-based music man Grenville Jones describes his extravaganza at the Bath Forum on Saturday evening, June 2. The Forum is a large concert hall in SouthGate, Bath, close to both bus and the railway station. The show starts at 7.30pm with doors opening at 7pm. Tickets are priced £20 from Bath Box Office on 01225 463362. Topping the bill are the fabulous Sundaes singing trio from the recent Saturday night BBC1 series All Together Now when they reached the finals. One of the 100 judges of course was Grenville himself who booked the group after seeing them perform at the BBC studios in Manchester, where the series was filmed. Also on the bill are Grenville’s celebrated Bath Male Choir. Since appearing on the BBC Last Choir Standing series, they have sung around the World to sell-out audiences. The 70 strong group are one of the leading male choirs in the UK. There will also be a section looking back at the 100 years commemoration of WW1 with poignant songs and memories and the chance for the audience to join in with the 600 members of Grenville’s popular Good Afternoon Choirs. These take place in Bristol, Frome, Wells, Yate & Chipping Sodbury, Keynsham, Bath, Thornbury and Devizes. A very special night for everyone! See Grenville's advert on Page 10

Books and beverages IT can be argued that the perfect book needs to be read while holding a glass of something special in the other hand. Now people are to get a chance to investigate the role of drinking in literature at a festival event. Organisers of the Cotswold Edge Literary Festival have organised an evening of books and beverages as part of the week-long event in June. The owner of the Bristol Wine School, Tristan Darby, is going to be on hand to explain why, from sherry in Shakespeare to fine wines in modern classics, drinks have always had a place in literature. People attending the event on June 21 at the Hamptons Deli in Chipping Sodbury High Street will be able to taste the wines and other drinks that Tristan highlights. Tristan has experience of writing about wine. He’s is drinks columnist for The Bath Magazine and the Bristol Magazine, and is a judge for both the Bristol and Bath Good Food Awards. He’s also spent time touring as a professional actor and singer, and will be reading extracts from the books he’s selected. The Cotswold Edge Literary Festival runs from June 16-24 at various venues across South Gloucestershire. For more information and to book tickets go to www.cotswoldedgeevents.co.uk

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR April topic was “the Battle of Nibley Green in 1470” – the last battle fought in England between private armies. Peter Fleming told us how the confrontation between Thomas Talbot 2nd Viscount Lisle and William 2nd Baron Berkeley, which was fought not too far from Wotton Under Battle enactment Edge Gloucestershire, was resolved. On May 1 our topic is “Every Boy Will Join The Navy”, featuring HMS Formidable, launched in 1825 that became a training ship berthed at Portishead. Surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the Civic Centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www. kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. n BOOK REVIEW The Late Show by Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly doesn’t really need any help from me, as he is a hugely successful author. However if you know him, you have probably read his series featuring Harry Bosch. Harry was born in 1950 and there is only so many post-retirement jobs he can do. We have seen him trying his luck as a private investigator and working cold cases. Knowing he would soon come to the end of his working life, Connelly introduced his half-brother, the lawyer Mickey Heller, and so another series began. Now Connelly has started a totally new series, this time with a female cop as the main protagonist. Renee Ballard has to work “The late show”, the name LA police give the night shift. She has been banished there after experiencing some sexualharassment issues with a former boss. She doesn’t mind working nights; what she hates is that each morning her cases are handed on to various departments and she never gets to see anything through. A very independent and feisty woman, she was born in Hawaii, the daughter of a local girl and a Californian surfer. Her mother abandoned her, and her father died young, so her family consists of her beloved grandmother and her adored dog Lola. What we see in this first book is Ballard ignoring her superiors, and continuing to work her cases. She is young and fit, so the book moves at an entirely different pace, from Connelly’s previous books. Connelly is a fantastic writer, and although I am no fan of American crime fiction in general. I love his books. This man, a former crime reporter, can really write. If you want an exciting summer read, this could be a book for you. Reviewed by Joy

Tomi sets his sights on the top flight

IF his current rate of progression is anything to go by, Cabot Learning Federation's Tomi Adegbite certainly looks destined for a top flight career in rugby. The 18-year-old Post 16 student only started playing the sport at the age of 14 but has already played for Bristol under 18s and Bristol United. Now CLF has presented the back row player with a Bristol Rugby shirt to celebrate his achievements. The federation's rugby team has a history of supplying players to top flight clubs. In addition to Tomi, Sam Tiley, Dan Thurston and Nathan Chamberlain have all played for Bristol United this season. Nathan has also recently represented Scotland under 18s. And at the pinnacle of their careers are former John Cabot Academy students Ellis Genge, who plays for Leicester Tigers and England, and Mitch Eddie who plays for Northampton Saints. Matt Leek, head coach of CLF rugby team, said: "It makes me massively proud that these boys have gone on to play rugby at a higher level and shows what talent we have here in East Bristol. I have a huge amount of support from Matt Sheppard, CLF and Gary Townsend from Bristol Rugby Club and would like to thank them for that. "The aim of the CLF rugby team is to improve rugby participation in the local Combination and I believe we are helping achieve this in a major way by working with the likes of Bristol Rugby and the local clubs. The next generation of boys and girls in the CLF rugby squads are working really hard and achieving representative success too." Residents vow to fight floodlights plan From Page 1 hear the club's arguments for wanting to expand. Club chairman John Winters told residents that floodlighting would enable the club to progress and fulfil league requirements. He said the 9m x 4m proposed stands would be placed next to the club house with a one metre wide path around three sides of the pitch and a 1.8m high fence surrounding it which would be left open to members of the public when matches aren't taking place. Mr Winters said plans also included improved sporting facilities at sites at Tennis Court Road and Fisher Road, which the club now manages on an ongoing year-long licence following South Gloucestershire Council's decision to back away from the maintenance of sports fields. He explained that had AEK

The club in Greenbank Road accommodates boys and girls aged five to 18, three men's sides and a women's side BOCO not agreed to do so, it would have resulted in the club having to axe 26 teams. Patrick Daly from Nottingham-based Abacus

Lighting addressed the meeting and said the floodlights would be mounted on eight masts which would be 15m high and include 12 individual lights.

He explained the lights are so high so they can be pointed down like a street light which would minimise light 'spill'. But Steve Ashlin, whose home overlooks the site in Tyler Close, said FA guidelines state that floodlights shouldn't be installed within 65m of houses, which the plans would breach, with some houses as close as 30m from the lights. "You're not abiding by your own rules," he told the club. Mike Openshaw, also of Tyler Close, told club members: "It's a residential area - you're surrounded by houses. What you are planning to do is going to adversely affect hundreds of people living in the area." Although residents agreed the club was doing good job in providing facilities for local people, they argued the site was too small and urged the club to look elsewhere. One man said: "We don't

n NEWS want any development with lights. Tennis Court Road is the best place for you. Just be happy with what you've got." Another resident said: "The site is just too small for the club's ambitions. You're surrounded by houses. You need a bigger space." One man made it clear, that he was determined to do all in his power to fight the plans. "I'm going to object as strongly as I can - and I'm not without resources," he told the club. Some residents, however, were in support of the plans and also spoke out. Denis Kerr told people if it wasn't for the club, his son would not now be on a football scholarship in the States. "This is not about building a stadium - this is about community football. "What would happen if the club doesn't get the development? It may fold and what would stop them building on the site? They would build whatever they want to build." Mr Kerr then warned objectors: "Be careful what you wish for."

AEK BOCO chairman John Winters This is not the first time the club has put forward proposals for expansion. Two years ago residents mounted a campaign after the club came up with a scheme for six 15m floodlights, a 50-seater stand and two dug outs. The plans had been lodged with the council but the club withdrew them in light of fierce local opposition. The club then said it was hoping to work with the council to come up with better guidelines for clubs, like themselves, who licence land from the council.

Steve Ashlin explains why he and his neighbours oppose the plans for the development at Greenbank. Residents are unhappy and feel let down for a whole number of reasons. The Football Association sets criteria to follow when the installation of floodlights and associated infrastructure is being considered. In the case of the Greenbank site, this location in a residential area with houses bordering the site on all four sides fails to meet the criteria. This issue can be traced back over 10 years to when AEK BOCO came to the Greenbank playing fields. The football club states proudly that they are a FA Charter

At the time the club said: "We're hoping these guidelines will give football clubs a clear indication of how far they can progress through the FA national league system on a particular piece of land. Having this information upfront will help clubs plan for the future and avoid situations such as this." It was clear from the meeting that residents felt they had been let down by South Gloucestershire Council because clearer guidelines had not been put in place. This was exacerbated by the fact the council had failed to send any officers to the meeting except Miles Harris from the Open Spaces team, who was there as a "fly on the wall" rather than in an official capacity. "The stress you have put us (residents) under in the last two years is unbelievable," Mr Ashlin said. "South Gloucestershire Council has let us down. We should not be in this situation."

'This is not about building a stadium - this is about community football'

Following the meeting Mr Winters told the Voice the club would consider retractable floodlighting, although that would be a more costly option. Under the plans, cricket would be moved from Greenbank to Fisher Road with the intention of applying for funding for an artificial cricket wicket and new dressing room facilities which would cater for football in the winter and cricket in the summer. Funding would also need to be sought for a clubhouse/ changing room and cricket nets at Tennis Court Road as well as to upgrade the floodlit ball court to increase opportunities for netball and tennis. A report by consultants acting for South Gloucestershire Council for its Playing Pitches, Indoor and Built Sports Facilities Strategies indicates support for the scheme. Both the FA and the English Cricket Board have told AEK BOCO and the council they support the proposals. A planning application has yet to be submitted to South Gloucestershire Council.

club and Community club. That carries a responsibility to do things correctly and listen to the local community when issues arise. Residents were pleased to learn therefore that an alternative site at Tenniscourt Road appears to be suitable that meets the relevant standards and will enable the football club to develop and provide level 6 football with associated floodlights. Residents question the wisdom of pursuing plans for Greenbank when there is already an alternative solution that meets the football club’s plans. • The Voice invited the football club to put forward its views but nothing was received before we went to print.

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM EVENING WI IRISH dancing took centre stage as Kingswood WI hosted the spring group meeting. Twelve of our members attended this event where the evening started with a lovely buffet supper. A display of Irish dancing followed, which was given by local group Signature Dance Studio of Kingswood. Everyone agreed this was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. “Now you see it, now you don’t” could easily have been the title of this month’s talk by Allen from Dauphines of Downend as he told us all about stage make up in his The Art of Illusion talk. Allen has been in the business for 50 years and has a wealth of experience in changing the appearance of the stars of stage and screen – often beyond all recognition. He began life as a trainee stage make-up artist but was conscripted into the army where he trained as a nurse. It was here that he witnessed, and had to deal with, casualties of war. This was to come in useful in his future career. On leaving the army he joined the fire service. He was often called upon to make up volunteers as victims of accidents to enable his colleagues to practise their medical and life saving skills i. Allen has worked with many famous people including Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones. However, the person he admired most and enjoyed working with was John Hurt. He met John when he was

John Hurt's make-up took five hours to apply - and a further two to remove! filming The Elephant Man where John was on set every day at 5am to be made up. His make-up took a full five hours to apply and he had to be ready for filming by 10am. When filming for the day finished it took a further two hours to remove the make-up. Allen told us that John never once complained despite the difficulties of being in makeup for so long every day and having to, for instance, drink only through a straw. A true professional! More recently Allen has once again worked in hospitals creating various life-like injuries on volunteers for staff training purposes. At the end of the evening he took the opportunity to show us at first hand his skills by simulating fake wounds on a couple of members. These were very realistic indeed and no doubt caused some concern to the members’ families when they got home!

Lindsey with Hugrūn and Micaela and some of the donated toys

Toys for new play group

A MUM has been overwhelmed with toy donations for the play group she is starting in Lyde Green. Lindsay Wheeler, who has lived in Lyde Green for three years with her husband, six-year-old daughter and two-year-old son realised that although there are toddler groups in Emersons Green, nothing is available for parents in Lyde Green. After talking to her sister-in-law Hugrūn Dunn from Mangotsfield and friend Micaela Williams from Kingswood, they decided to get together and set up one themselves, called “Little Play @ Lyde Green”. The plan is for the group to run at the new community centre on a Tuesday or Friday morning from 10-11.45am, with tea and coffee provided for free. It will be run on a voluntary basis, and parents will just be asked to pay to cover the cost of the hall hire. Lindsay said: “Toys are expensive and as we are running the playgroup on a voluntary basis, we thought we would put out a message on Facebook to say what we’re doing and see if anyone had any toys to donate.“We’ve had loads of donations so far.My house looks like a toy shop at the moment! Lindsay is still looking for donations of baby play mats for the playgroup. If you have one, contact the Little Play @ Lyde Green Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/littleplaylyde/

Vintage venture

The key to peace of mind

BLACK Sheep Harmony A Cappella Chorus have joined forces with charity shops to cash in on the retro trend. They are holding a Vintage and Preloved Fair on Saturday 2nd June at Cadbury Heath Hall. They believe it is the first event of its type in the country as they bring charities together under one roof. St Peter’s Hospice, British Heart Foundation and the PDSA are all on board to sell some of their more select items in the ambience of a Vintage Fair. Over 20 stall holders will be selling clothing, decorative china and glassware, kitchenalia, collectibles and much more, and there will be a vintage tearoom. Contact Nicky Sims (blacksheepchorus@gmail. com) if you would like to know more or book a table.

BIKES, tools, sports kit, gardening equipment and even food are among the items we’ve had reported from sheds and garages. We don’t always make sure they’re as secure as they should be. It might be better to have any lock rather than none: but think how much it would cost to replace all the items in your shed or garage. It’s worth investing in the best quality lock and door fittings that you can afford – check out www. soldsecure.com for ratings on security products independently tested by locksmiths. Thieves don’t like to draw attention and are generally looking for the easiest option. Install motion-sensing lights (solarpowered products are available) and fit a ‘shed alarm’ to make breaking in noisy and conspicuous. If you’ve got an ‘up and over’ garage door, secure it with a

padlock or bolt through the runners, or a custom lock. “Layered” security is a good idea – secure your boundaries using thorny plants, trellis-topped fences and locked gates, make it difficult to get into your shed or garage, and then lock items such as bikes and ladders to a ground anchor and keep tools in a secure box bolted to the ground. Joining Neighbourhood Watch deters thieves because they know neighbours are looking out for one another and will report suspicious incidents. n NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT The hungry gap EARLY spring as many allotment holders will know is referred to as the ‘Hungry Gap’, when more is going into the plot than coming out. The crops that saw us through last winter have all been harvested, apart from a few leeks that still remain as this report is being written, whilst other items planted late last year are still maturing. Our over-wintering broad bean plants which are generally very hardy took a setback with the two cold spells we endured in March. These had a deep layer of snow around them for several days and at one point it was feared they would be a total failure, however, they have revived and although not as good as some I have compared with, are starting to produce flower. But all is not lost, whilst we are waiting for other crops to develop we’ve had several pickings of purple sprouting and our potatoes stored in the shed since last August have survived to keep the family going. One favourite and almost a delicacy we are fortunate to have had recently is forced rhubarb, this is achieved by covering the plant for some weeks from the latter end of winter with one of the ‘dalek’ type compost bins so that it is in total darkness. This produces really tender and sweet stems for several weeks until the dalek bin is removed to allow the plant to recover. Next year we’ll move the temporary cover to another plant so this forcing process is shared. As our photo shows, space

for plant production in our greenhouse has been at a premium in recent weeks with beetroot, tomatoes, chard and courgettes to name but a few. Regular readers may remember our recent report that Ern, one of our plot holders has created a special compost bed for growing giant pumpkins for our pumpkin show in October though we are inviting as many others as possible to compete against him, could you see him off perhaps? Very soon our allotment shop in Nicholas Lane will have two varieties of pumpkin plants on sale that can be planted out from the end of the month. Dills Atlantic Giant and Expert are the ones we’ll have available, the fruits of Expert are smaller, about football size but they make ideal decorations for Hallowe’en and of course not bad for eating either or making winter soups. Sowing seeds is great fun and watching green shoots appear that develop into crops that we can pick and eat is extremely satisfying but

sometimes those seeds get left in the packet for a number of reasons until it becomes just too late, or maybe a whole packet of seeds is just too many to plant. To help fill this void our allotment shop in Nicholas Lane will have several varieties of plants on sale every Saturday and Sunday morning over the coming weeks. Our stock will be constantly changing and if you need to know what’s coming up in the days ahead the notice board on our shop gates will keep you informed. For those of us that are social media users you can get instant updates of our stock by ‘Liking’ our Facebook page, you’ll find us by tapping in Bristol East Allotments Association, we’ll look forward to becoming Friends with you. Finally this month, please can we encourage everyone to plant a few flowers this summer, even if you only have room for a window box or pot outside with a few Fuchsia’s or Geraniums. Not only will this look attractive but

it will help the Bee population enormously. Worldwide, bee colonies have suffered great losses over recent years for many reasons, some of which may be attributed to mankind. In addition to this, bee-keepers on our allotments have reported further declines in their colonies due to the coldest months of the winter. So please plant some flowers, as the saying goes, every little helps. Incidentally, if you’re partial to a drop of honey our bee-keepers supply some of theirs to our allotment shop. Apart from being locally produced it’s about as natural as anything else our plots can provide. Bristol East Allotments Association. Nicholas Lane St. George BS5 8TY. n VETS' ADVICE

Should I brush my pet’s teeth? Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Dr Ciara Taylor MRCVS Highcroft Veterinary Group

THE answer is ideally Yes! Cats and dogs can suffer with dental disease in the same way that humans can. What’s more, poor dental hygiene can lead to similar health issues, such as heart and kidney disease. Particles, saliva and bacteria build up on the surface of the teeth, plaque and tartar will accumulate. This will eventually lead to gingivitis (inflammation of the gum tissue). If gingivitis is allowed to go unchecked the plaque bacteria will start to penetrate below the gum line, leading to destruction of the bone and other tooth supporting structures - a condition termed periodontitis. This is a far more serious condition and, if left untreated, results in tooth loosening and eventual tooth loss. Pets are very good at covering up tooth ache so keep an eye out for symptoms which include: Loss of appetite, inability to eat, bad

breath, broken teeth, lumps on the gums, facial swelling and rubbing their face or mouth. Whilst there is much we can do to treat dental disease, as always, prevention is better than cure and your veterinary practice will be able to advise you on dental hygiene for your pet. If you have any concerns about

your pet’s dental health, or would like more information on caring for your pet’s teeth, contact your vet, or call Longwell Green Veterinary Centre on 0117 932 3660 for a free dental check. Let’s keep your pets smiling! Dr Ciara Taylor MRCVS
