Humans of Hanham: a pho EVER wondered what a night at Hanham Youth Club feels like? That's the tag line for an exhibition of photography and sound chronicling life at the popular High Street club. Young people there took part in a 12-month project called Humans of Hanham – which was funded by Comic Relief. Working with photographer Colin Moody and emerging young artist Nick Fogarty, boys and girls took images and captured sound which provides a snapshot of their everyday lives away from home. The social action project was managed by Creative Youth Network (CYN) which runs the youth club, along with others in the district.

Youth worker Arran Bees says the young peope have captured on audio and on camera what it is like to be immersed in life at Hanham Youth Club Humans of Hanham launched at Hanham Hall on April 16 and will run until April 28 when it will then go on a mini-tour of Bristol. More than 400 young people attend Hanham Youth Club across four evenings every week. They are able to take part in planned activities or just hang out, play pool and chat to their mates. Friday evenings are funded by both parish councils and are known as project nights where young people look at varied issues such as women's rights, young

people cycling without lights and homophobia. Youth club manager Arran Bees said the young people had been the driving force of the project. “It was important to us to do something that the young people wanted to do rather than us forcing something on them. “We looked at different things but ultimately landed upon the idea of Humans of Hanham. They captured images that we as youth workers see every day – young people doing what they do and enjoying what they do. They also captured the audio of what it's like to be immersed in club life. The exhibition is the sum of the project. We have 31 images which were selected from more than 100 and these explain to members of the public and parents what it's like to be at club.” Arran said the audio side of the project is equally as important. “On the audio are some really amazing conversations between youth workers and young people about really important and hard hitting issues. Young people are making really amazing points but the people of Hanham never get to hear this. The project was the young people's chance to express how they feel about things to an audience. “Quite often young people don't have a voice – they don't get to vote until they are 18 and it's difficult to express themselves at school so this has been an opportunity for them to do that. It's also an amazing opportunity for their parents, and members of the public, to actually see and hear what goes on inside Hanham Youth Club.” CYN spokeswoman Andreea Dumitrache said: “The exhibition highlights that, in a time when space for young people to have fun and be safe is becoming more and more scarce, Hanham Youth Club is a crucial space where young people build their community and find their voice.”

Hikers take on challenge for hospital TWO couples from Longwell Green are embarking on a tough challenge to raise funds for the hospital they work at, which helps people who are often in the last year of their life. Charlotte Nicol and husband Paul and Sophie Baugh and partner John Revelle all work at Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre and want to raise as much money as possible to refurbish one of the wards there. The foursome will be joined by six others, three members of staff from the same hospital and their partners, in taking part in the national Three Peaks Challenge in July. The gruelling task involves climbing the three highest peaks of England, Scotland and Wales – Scarfell Pike, Ben Nevis and Snowdon. Calling themselves the Dream Team, they plan to raise as much money as possible for the charity Above & Beyond, the official charity for Bristol city centre hospitals, which will be spent on revamping D603, an oncology ward. At the time of going to print, the team had already raised more than £3,000 of their £6,975 target through their online JustGiving page. Charlotte, a matron, said: “We are so excited to be taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge as it is the perfect opportunity to do our bit to raise some money to improve the hospital environment for

From left to right: Sophie Baugh, Charlotte Nicol, Paul Nicol and John Revelle are pictured training for the Three Peaks Challenge, which takes place in July patients and staff. “We are so passionate about the fantastic care the staff provide on D603 and feel it is so sad that the ward environment does not reflect this amazing care, as it has not been refurbished since the 1970s. “Many patients are in the last year of their life and it will make such a difference to them and the staff who work there every day to have a bright, modern new ward.”

Got a story?

Amy Barnard-Smith, hospital partnerships manager at Above & Beyond, said: “Charlotte and the D603 Dream Team are working really hard and it shows in the amount they have raised so far. As staff, the D603 Appeal means a lot to the whole team. It’s important for both staff and patients to have a ward environment that matches the high standard of care delivered.” To further boost funds, Charlotte is holding a charity

Grief as Lee, 8, loses battle for life TRIBUTES have been paid to Lee Belgium, who has died after a three-year battle with cancer. Eight-year-old Lee, from Lyde Green, was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in May 2016 when he was just six, and had been going to Bristol Children’s Hospital three times a week to have chemotherapy, steroids and a new trial drug. His family raised nearly £80,000 in four months in the hope that Lee could go to Turkey with his mum Clare Boxall for a treatment trial and a bone marrow transplant, which they hoped would save his life. However, the plans went on

It will follow the tried and tested format, starting at 10.30am with the parade from the green by the Lamb Inn, through the village to Cleve, where the festival will be formally opened at 11am. There will be lots of stalls (some spaces still available contact stalls@ mangotsfieldfestival.co.uk if you’re interested), music, song and dance in the arena, a dog show and lots of activities for all ages – some traditional, some newer, with the fun continuing until 8pm.

Couple remain tight lipped over apparent departure from Tories

TWO Tory councillors appear to have quit the party in South Gloucestershire, but neither they nor the party are saying why. Lidl sets its sights on Longwell Green PLANS to build a large Lidl store at the former Homebase site in Longwell Green won't affect the Hanham branch, the budget supermarket has confirmed. Customers to the High Street store were concerned it could close after Lidl announced its intentions to open in Aldermoor Way. A spokesperson for Lidl said: “Since our current store on Hanham High Street opened, our business has experienced exponential growth, with more customers shopping at Lidl than ever before. “In order for us to continue providing the best possible shopping experience and service for new and existing customers in both Hanham, Longwell Green and beyond, it is necessary for us to open a second store in the area. “We would like to take the opportunity to express our gratitude to the community for

all the support that we have received for our plans so far.” At the time of going to print, Lidl had not yet submitted plans for the new store to South Gloucestershire Council but a letter to the authority from the company's agent reveals Lidl's intentions. The letter states Lidl wants to create two units for both a supermarket and a non-food store, but has not revealed who might be its neighbour. It also hopes to demolish the former garden centre to make way for extra car parking. Lidl has, however, submitted plans for an illuminated sign at the site, a request which has to be considered by the council under different regulations. A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: “If an application is received to change or re-purpose the former Homebase building, this will be published via our planning portal

Riddle of foul smell at Teewell Hill THE source of a pungent smell coming from drains in Staple Hill remains a mystery after council engineers investigating the issue drew a blank. Officials from South Gloucestershire Council have visited Teewell Hill numerous times following a complaint from a resident living there about intermittent odours. The woman told the authority she believed the smell was from water coming down in the storm drains on the side of the road. But each time the council has been out to look at the drains they have found no evidence of bad smells. Staple Hill councillor Ian Boulton has been liaising with officials to get the problem sorted. He said: “The source of the waste water which appears to be causing the smell remains a mystery. “The offensive waste appears to occur relatively

briefly and intermittently meaning that the council engineer is yet to find the source of it. If anyone has any information about this or any other drainage problem please report it by calling 01454 868000 or go online at www. southglos.gov.uk and visit the ‘Report It’ page.” A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “Our highway maintenance engineers have met with the Teewell Hill resident and discussed the issue that they are experiencing with the drains. Our investigations to date have not found any odours or evidence of additional flows, and any issue present does not appear to be related to rainfall. “We have provided the resident with contact details for our drainage engineers so that they can notify us if it happens again and we will revisit the area to carry out further investigation work.”

Lidl says its stores have been so popular, there is a demand for two branches in the area and residents will be notified in the normal way and invited to comment as part of the normal application and decision-making process.” Homebase Longwell Green closed at the end of 2018 after experiencing difficult trading conditions which led to the company announcing it would

close 42 outlets nationally. The branch became a Homebase clearance outlet, used to get rid of unwanted stock, before closing for good. Previous owners, Australian firm Wesfarmers, bought Homebase for £340m in 2016 but plans to rebrand it as Bunnings were unsuccessful.

Report moped menaces DANGEROUS moped riders are putting pedestrians in Staple Hill at risk, residents fear. People living in the area have seen an increase in the number of young people riding mopeds, many of them modified which is likely to make them impossible to insure and therefore illegal. Witnesses have reported incidents in Kendall Road, close to Staple Hill Primary School, sparking fears a child could be injured. Police say the neighbourhood policing team is aware of antisocial riding and is targeting patrols in roads where the issue has been reported. They also say they have the power to seize bikes which are being driven dangerously and even have them crushed. They urge anyone witnessing the anti-social behaviour to report it straight away, with information including the time, date and location, details of vehicles and descriptions of the riders involved.

Fraudster caught selling fake trainers A FRAUDSTER who sold 179 pairs of fake branded trainers on eBay has been ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work following a trial at Bristol Crown Court. Tobi Akinsola, 27, of New Cheltenham Road, Kingswood, was found guilty by jury following a two day trial during which he protested his innocence to five charges under the Trade Marks Act for selling and possessing for sale the counterfeit footwear. As well as being ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, Akinsola was told that he could have to pay back the £8,630 he generated from his enterprise. The case was pursued by South Gloucestershire Trading Standards following a complaint that Akinsola was selling counterfeit trainers

via eBay. Officers liaised with brand representatives from two global manufacturers after it was established that he was selling counterfeit copies of their trainers through the website. A test purchase of a pair trainers costing £53.98 from Akinsola took place in January 2018 and the trainers were confirmed as counterfeit. Akinsola’s home address was subsequently raided by South Gloucestershire Council’s Trading Standards team and police officers, and a quantity of suspected counterfeit items were seized. Paypal records were also obtained which indicated Akinsola had sold a total of 179 pairs of the counterfeit branded trainers between January 2017 and January 2018, generating a total of £8,630.15. In court, it was established

that Akinsola had failed to heed warnings from customers that he was selling counterfeit trainers. Instead he continued to sell trainers from the same suppliers he used in China and did no++++++t take sufficient steps to ensure their authenticity. Upon sentencing, the judge said there was an element of naivety and immaturity to Akinsola’s actions in selling the footwear. He branded him a “dishonest trader” whose actions were not entrepreneurial in the slightest as he was buying obviously fake goods to sell to online customers who he “fleeced”. Akinsola was made subject to a forfeiture order in relation to the counterfeit footwear seized from his address and he was also warned that he should expect to lose out financially as a result of further action ongoing against

him under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Mark Pullin, Strong, Safer Communities manager at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “The sale of counterfeit goods not only harms the original manufacturer, but often also means that the purchaser receives low quality goods that have not been subject to the same tests and standards as the official items. “The Trade Marks Act 1994 covers offences for businesses selling and possessing for sale counterfeit goods, and the maximum punishment for a conviction is 10 years imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. “Anyone who suspects they may have been sold counterfeit goods is urged to report it to Trading Standards by calling 03454 04 05 06.”

Snowdon climb in aid of deaf children

Maria and five workmates – Stephanie Dacres, Cengiz Guner, John McGowan, Maria's husband Keith Smith, and Lucy Wiltshire - all from Chevron Traffic Management - took nine hours to trek to the summit of Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, where they proudly unfurled a banner for the charity. Maria will donate all the monies raised to the National Deaf Children’s Society, which

From left to right: Lucy Wiltshire, Maria King-Smith, John McGowan, Stephanie Dacres and Cengiz Guner (Jengo)

supports the UK’s 50,000 deaf children. At the time of going to print, the challenge has raised £830, smashing Maria's original £800 target. Maria said: “When Oliver was first diagnosed I said ‘Right, what can we do?’ I’m a very positive person, and this challenge was my way of saying thank you to the National Deaf

Children’s Society, who have also been really positive in the way they supported Oliver and his family since Oliver’s diagnosis in December 2017. “We need more awareness and more resources for deaf children. Oliver is getting plenty of support now and doing well at school, but the fact remains that my daughter Jess has to make

a one-hour round trip each day to get him there and back. More is needed, and it’s good to know the National Deaf Children’s Society is in our corner, fighting for more.” You can support Maria's fundraising drive by donating on her JustGiving page. Visit https://bit.ly/2XiOkun

Freewheeler Andy spreads the word YOU could be forgiven for thinking that blood bikes are a part of the service provided by the NHS, but you couldn't be further from the truth. Blood bikes, or Freewheelers as they are known in the South West, are a recognised emergency service but run entirely by unpaid volunteers and reliant on donations to keep running. Often working during the evenings and throughout the night, motorbike-riding volunteers ensure that blood, blood products, medical equipment, X-rays, medical notes and even breast milk is delivered to hospitals, patients and air ambulance services. They use a fleet of specialist bikes ridden by highly trained advanced motorcyclists who are controlled by coordinators who take calls, designate riders, plan routes and manage jobs across an area of around 1,700 square miles. One of these volunteers is Andy Davies, who lives in Soundwell. He said it is estimated that the blood bike service saves the NHS more than £1.5million a year. Andy started volunteering about a year ago after taking an advanced motorcycle training course and test, a requirement of the role. He said: “A rider may travel

as many as four hundred miles in one shift, picking up from and delivering to various hospitals including both the Great Western and Wiltshire Air Ambulance Services. There are normally a minimum of four bikes and riders on duty at any one time, plus coordinators. “It can cost over £10k per year to keep each bike on the road. All members are regarded as fundraisers and regularly attend fetes, functions and other events to try to raise money for the charity.” Andy said he often gets mistaken for a police officer – and it's often not a pleasant experience. “When travelling on major roads or motorways drivers of other vehicles often, at first glance, mistake us for a police motorcyclist and brake hard, especially if they are speeding. They then crawl past until they recognise that we aren't a police vehicle and then they accelerate off into the distance. “During a recent journey I was riding along some local roads in a 20mph area when a young man walking along the pavement in a hoodie appeared to become quite angered and as I approached he shouted 'Pig!'” Andy is taking the fundraising element of his role seriously and has been visiting local organisations to spread the

word about Freewheelers. “The feedback from my presentations has been very good and I am now getting lots of requests from different groups to give talks but taking a blood bike along is always subject to operational demands.”

To find out more about volunteering or if your organisation would like a representative to come along to a fete, function or give a talk, please contact Andy via email at daviesa98@yahoo.co.uk

Hero honoured for saving baby's life A QUICK-THINKING man who saved the life of a baby after he spotted her choking in Hanham has been honoured for his actions. Rob Stockwell, a vehicle technician with Avon and Somerset Police, was hailed a hero by Kayleigh Finn after he came to the rescue of her 10-month-old daughter Indie. Now Rob has been handed a Royal Humane Society award, a national accolade for acts of bravery while saving human life. Having recently completed a one-day first aid course with his employer, Rob was driving along the High Street when he saw a crowd of people outside a shop. Thinking someone had been hurt, Rob asked his wife to call an ambulance, got out of the car and discovered a baby choking in her pushchair after eating a baby-friendly crisp. When he realised no one else knew what to do he stepped in to try the life-saving back blow technique. After the fourth blow Indie finally started crying. An

ambulance arrived shortly after taking the little girl to hospital for a full check-up. Kayleigh had the chance to say thank you to Robert after finding him with the help of a local PCSO on Facebook. Rob said: “My upmost thanks and respect goes out to the staff that run and instruct the first aid course at the Wilfred Fuller Centre! I really enjoyed the course, and believe that as many staff as possible need to attend, without it I really believe that this little girl wouldn’t have had such a chance.” Kayleigh said: “Without a shadow of a doubt, Rob saved Indie's life. It's amazing Rob has been given this award; it's definitely well deserved. “Indie is now 16 months, walking and is just perfect – all thanks to Rob.” Rob received his award at a ceremony hosted by Avon and Somerset Police at Merchants Hall in Bristol attended by chief constable Andy Marsh QPM, Avon and Somerset police and crime commissioner Sue

Rob with Kayleigh and Indie

Hero Rob has been honoured for saving the life of little Indie Mountstevens, and high sheriff of Bristol, Charles Wyld. He was among the 19 police officers, staff and members of the public who were honoured for their bravery, courage and commitment Chief constable Andy Marsh QPM said: “These awards celebrate people who have gone above and beyond expectations. Today we have heard extraordinary stories of courage, bravery and selflessness to help others. “The situations our officers respond to change every day and we find ourselves helping more of our communities most vulnerable. We can’t do the job alone. We rely on teamwork, the

support of our colleagues and the public. “The accounts we’ve heard show the very best of this teamwork and it has been a privilege to celebrate with our award winners, and their friends and families.” Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset Sue Mountstevens said: “We have heard incredible stories of bravery, of people who have remained calm in extremely challenging and sometimes risky situations, putting the safety of others before themselves “It’s a great privilege to be here today to celebrate all those whose actions have helped make our communities safer.”

Beese's tea gardens goes up for sale A POPULAR summer destination hotspot in Hanham is up for sale – for offers in excess of £1million. Beese's tea gardens, along the riverpath near Conham, is being marketed by property specialists Fleurets. Its sale includes a threebedroomed cottage, garden, bar, restaurant, marquees and ferry, which is used to transport customers on the opposite side of the river. The agent says Beese's occupies a “magnificent riverside setting” and offers “unrivalled views of the River Avon”. As well as being accessed via ferry, visitors can get there by road from the Broomhill side of the river. Open six months a year from Fridays to Sundays, Beese's is a popular wedding venue and hosts an annual beer festival. Often referred to as a hidden gem, Beese's was founded

Beese's Tea Gardens in 1846 by Anne Beese, who provided refreshments to travellers and workers using the river and Conham Ferry, which was also operated by the family. Thomas and Hannah Beese then lived at the Ferry House along with their four children and, forty years later, their son

George took over. After George's death in 1895, his wife continued to run the business and employed a ferryman to run the ferry. The business was sold to the Plumpton family in the 1920s when the cost of the ferry crossing continued to be just

one old penny until the Second World War. Prior to the war, there had been a small cabin on the Conham side where sweets, chocolates and sandwiches could be purchased.

It's time to choose your councillors Labour candidates for Hanham ward: Caroline White Andy Chubb Wayne Prewett Caroline, Andy and Wayne say: “As new Labour councillors we will work hard for residents, defending public services against the severe cuts and pushing for improved facilities. After years of national austerity and local cuts, we will to work to keep our streets safer, campaign for better public transport services, for improvements to traffic safety and for better health and community care.” Caroline White: Caroline is a mental health nurse and a mother of three children who grew up in Hanham. She understands the importance of education, young people’s services and the shortage of affordable housing. Caroline is Green Party candidates for Hanham ward: Jenny Vernon Jenny is married with six children and 11 grandchildren and is a social housing consultant. She said: “I am determined to bring a new way of doing politics to the council. Not being whipped means I am able to support the needs and desires of Hanham residents, not forced to vote along any party lines. “Community engagement and empowerment is my passion and I have seen first hand how local people with political support can really change things for

passionate about protecting local green spaces. Andy Chubb: From 2011 - 2015 Andy was a town councillor for Filton, serving as vice-chair of planning and chair of finance. Wayne Prewett: Wayne is a father of five, one of whom has special needs. He is passionate in trying to get the best education for all of our children no matter what their circumstances. He will fight for fair funding for the schools in Hanham and across South Gloucestershire. Labour candidates for Longwell Green ward: the better. I want to see this in Hanham. “My daughter and family also use the local shops, library and pre-school. The high street and community facilities, including green spaces are just as important to them. I want to ensure these facilities not only remain, but are improved, not just for them, but for all residents in Hanham.” Joe Evans

representing and advocating for the residents of Longwell Green.

Pat and Ron say “On Thursday 2nd May local people have the chance to vote to make changes in their area and to have their say on the record of nine years of Tory cuts. As Labour councillors we will stand up for residents and seek to repair the damage being done to our community.”

Ron Hardie: Ron has lived in this area for over thirty years. He was a parish councillor for 15 years and is currently chair of Oldland Parish Council. Ron is a retired Aerospace Engineer and worked for Airbus for nearly forty years. He is actively involved with many local organisations, including Community Engagement, TPG alms houses and Cadbury Heath Hall. He is a committed trade unionist and has held a number of positions in Unite. He is keen to establish a strong voice for Longwell Green on South Gloucestershire Council and seeks youth provision, road safety and library improvements.

Pat Penny: Pat moved to Hanham in 2006. She retired from full-time work four years ago. Having worked in the community for a local voluntary organisation, she was concerned by the effect of austerity on our schools, hospitals and social services. Pat wants everyone’s children to live in a country that cares about our communities and she wants to make a difference by the views, needs and wants of my neighbours to be heard instead of towing party lines and pursuing my own comfort. I want to be there to prevent more millionaire-making companies building incompatible and unaffordable homes on our threatened green belt. “Together we can turn the tide against the fragmentation of our community and the decimation of services through relentless cuts. With leadership we can protect and enhance these services and celebrate the structure and lifeblood to our local community they provide.” Jack Cox Jack, 36, works for NFU Mutual. He grew up in Kingswood and now lives in Longwell Green. He said: “I’ve been a longterm volunteer in youth sport – including Red Falcon FC in Keynsham and Bristol Sonics Junior Academy. “I’m a big fan of the ‘Love Hanham High Street’ campaign and believe what they are doing with fantastic community

Jack Cox engagement is key to help rejuvenate the area. I’m standing for Hanham because I simply don’t believe residents have anyone representing local issues effectively. It’s time for new blood on the council – and councillors free to truly represent their residents in the chamber. “I’ve also got concerns about funding – particularly for youth services and schools in the area, and I think this is an area that our current councillors shy away from as it’s their colleagues in Westminster handing down the cuts.”

Boundaries change THOUSANDS of voters in South Gloucestershire will cast their vote in new wards this month. The elections to South Gloucestershire Council will take place along new electoral lines following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission. The authority is now split into nine three-councillor wards, 15 twocouncillor wards and four one-councillor wards. Commission chair Colin Mellors has said the redrawn boundaries would ensure “electoral fairness” and reflected “community ties” in South Gloucestershire. Nine new wards were created in the electoral carve-up, but 17 were scrapped, reducing the total number of elected representatives from 70 to 61. The Hanham and Longwell Green wards were unaffected by the changes. Among the wards scrapped were Parkwall and Staple Hill. New wards include Parkwall and Warmley and New Cheltenham. The changes were made after a 10-week consultation in 2017 which allowed residents to comment on the proposals.

Niamh,12 raises £238 with charity cake sale A SCHOOLGIRL has raised more than £200 at a charity cake sale in Hanham. Niamh Welsh hosted the event in support of children bereavement charity Winston's Wish. The 12-year-old set up her stall at her auntie Louise Hopton's home after posting flyers about the sale in the area. They were amazed when around 80 people turned up to buy the home-made cakes baked by members of Niamh's family, including mum Natalie, her grandparents and aunties and uncles. Niamh lives in Bradley Stoke but will soon be moving to Hanham, where many members of her family live. Louise said Niamh raised a grand total of £238.15. She said: “The charity had previously supported the family so Niamh wanted to help them. “For just a few hours on a

Niamh Welsh sets out her stall to help the Winston's Wish charity Sunday morning, she raised a great amount. It was meant to have been from 10am until midday but at midday we still had people coming so we stayed on the driveway for as long as it took! “Niamh gave out all the

flyers herself and advertised it to all her friends and family. We had neighbours turn up that we didn't know, so it was really lovely. “She does something for Winston's Wish every year. Last year she did a show with her

dance school and the year before she held a big charity party. The cake show is the only thing she's done this year but she has more plans for the summer. “All her family are proud of her because she's really focussed on helping other people.”

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR April topic was the early Avon Valley copper and brass industry. We traced its origins from the experimental coal-fired smelting of Cornish copper ores on the banks of the Avon using Bristol coal and culminated with a sophisticated multi-site complex of mills variously smelting copper, alloying copper, zinc and calamine to produce high quality brass and manufacturing brass hollowware by water-powered ‘battery’ hammers located on the rivers Frome, Chew and Avon. There were also rolling mills to produce sheet material and wire with spin-off industries such as pin making, such as the Warmley pin factory.

On May 7 our topic will be Reforming Bristol Women (incredible women from our area who helped to shape our society) - surely unmissable! The Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month (March – December) at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the Civic Centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www.kingswoodhistorysociety. org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. Annual subscription is only £20. Paul Hanmore Secretary

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

A

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

S the local MP, I regularly have residents raise with me that if we are to discourage people from feeling forced to own and drive their own car and regularly adding to local traffic congestion then we have to provide credible alternatives that are affordable, reliable and convenient. Moving into a new home and community is a particularly opportune time to think about how you can use your car less and try out some alternative ways of getting around that work for you and your family. And so I am delighted that the Lyde Green Car Club has officially launched, thanks to £67,000 of new funding approved by South Gloucestershire Council, which invests in the growing community of Lyde Green. The scheme, run by car rental firm Enterprise, give households access to communal vehicles for

use in and around the region. The Club’s first car, a Toyota Yaris, has been in operation since December and is based outside the Lyde Green Community Centre. As more members join, more vehicles will be purchased and establish more permanent parking spaces. Linking up our communities to an improved transport network is essential and I’m pleased to see that earlier this year the M3X service was launched to provide a more direct route for Emersons Green and Lyde Green residents, as well as users of the Lyde Green Park and Ride, into the city centre. The M3X service is in addition to the existing M3 service that travels into Bristol via UWE. This accompanies an £800,000 investment through the West of England Combined Authority to overhaul the vehicle fleet of our community transport providers, including Kingswood

Quarry Court

Community Transport. Finally, it was announced in the last few weeks that our existing local bus services in and out of Bristol and Bath will benefit from a further award of funding from Department for Transport's Clean Bus Technology Fund. Using the latest technology, the money will help retrofit 166 buses to reduce the amount of Nitrogen Dioxide and other harmful pollutants being released into the air by up to 94%. This is the fourth time that money has been secured from the Department for Transport to upgrade the bus fleet, which includes helping to improve air quality in the region, bringing the total funding secured to £10 million. A cleaner, more affordable, reliable and accessible public transport network can keep our area moving as we go about our daily lives.

Cracking! Gromit trail brings in £2m THE Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity, has announced that its third awardwinning trail, Gromit Unleashed 2, has raised £2 million for the hospital and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol. Last summer, Gromit Unleashed 2 brought 67 sculptures of Nick Park's Academy Award®-winning characters Wallace, Gromit and Feathers McGraw to Bristol and the surrounding area, with designs from international film studio Pixar Animations and world-famous brands LEGO and Star Trek. Trail fans flocked from across the country and overseas, spending a combined 34,000 days around Bristol hunting for the popular sculptures, which were visited over 3 million times. Proceeds from the auction night, which saw bidders from across the world, raised a staggering £1.3 million. Just six months later – through further fundraising and support – the total amount now raised by the trail stands at £2 million. The charity - which recently won ‘Charity of the Year’ at the 2019 Bristol Life Awards – this week celebrated this landmark with a guest visit from its founding patron and Wallace & Gromit Creator Nick Park to the hospital. Nick led a one-to-one drawing class with Oncology patient Kara in the hospital’s play centre. Nick Park, creator of Wallace & Gromit and Patron of The Grand Appeal said: “Last summer, Gromit Unleashed 2 took the city of Bristol by

Aardman's Nick Park with oncology patient Kara and, right, one of the popular Gromit sculptures storm with its innovation and creativity. It is fantastic to see, first hand, the real difference the money will make to so many young patients – like Kara – and their families from across the South West who are expertly cared for at the hospital.” The Grand Appeal is currently supporting over 100 pioneering projects valued at £5 million at the hospital and NICU. The £2 million raised through Gromit Unleashed 2 will fund an array of developments, including: a ground-breaking research programme in paediatric intensive care; a revolutionary 3D Bio-Printing Service; a specialist family support service; and an expansion of the hospital’s palliative care and bereavement support service. Nicola Masters, Director at The Grand Appeal said:

“Everything that we do here at The Grand Appeal is to make Bristol Children’s Hospital and St Michael’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit the very best they can be. We believe we have now run three of the most successful charity arts trail in the world, and we’re so grateful to all our supporters who have helped us reach this latest milestone. The money raised will have a lifechanging impact on the brave young patients and families that we meet every single day.” Bryony Strachan, Medical Director of the children’s hospital added: “On behalf of all the staff, patients and families here at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and the neonatal intensive care unit at St Michael’s Hospital, a massive thank you to everyone that made the Gromit Unleashed 2 trail so fabulous.

"We are so grateful to The Grand Appeal team, the sponsors and the talented artists and engineers that gave such delight to so many last summer. "Most of all, thank you to everyone that gave and helped to fundraise such an incredible amount. Your donations will support us to provide the best possible care for children and young people across the region.” Aardman is also celebrating 30 years of Wallace & Gromit in 2019, so there is a calendar of forthcoming activity and fundraising initiatives for The Grand Appeal around the city which will continue to delight families this summer and beyond. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Stronger communities are safer communities STRONGER communities are safer communities. However, strong communities can only thrive if we continue to develop our relationships, working together as residents, local people and the police. So I was pleased to see the police and the local community coming together to celebrate the opening of a new memorial garden in Castle Park in Bristol. The memorial honours 83,000 Sikh soldiers who lost their lives in the first and second World Wars. It is of the utmost importance that we remember that in both wars Sikh soldiers, as well as people of other faiths, stood shoulder to shoulder to form part of the British Army. The memorial is a wonderful place that the old and young alike can visit and remember the bravery of the Sikh soldiers.

Supporting and reflecting our diverse communities is an important part of my role and a specific priority within my Police and Crime plan. I was therefore delighted to attend the new Bristol Muslim Strategic Leaders Group; this important group is looking at ways our Muslim communities can be more involved within our public services. Making sure our public services not only reflect the communities they serve with the people they employ but also that the service reflects their needs and those of their community is absolutely essential. I really welcomed the national ‘Make Yourself Heard’ campaign that aims to raise awareness of a silent 999 system. The Silent Solution system enables 999 mobile callers who are too scared

to make a noise or to speak to press 55 when prompted, informing police that they are in a genuine emergency. There could be occasions where speaking out loud is not possible or would put you in more danger, and that is why knowing about the 55 service is important. We need to ensure everyone knows about the system, as in extreme situations, it could potentially save lives. The campaign was launched during National Stalking Awareness Week. On average, around 100 incidents take place before a stalking crime is reported and we need to encourage victims to come forward and seek help from either the police or other agencies. We need to bust the myth that stalking involves someone sitting in the bushes outside your house;

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens

stalking can include persistent and unwanted behaviour that causes the victim anxiety or fear. It’s obsessive and could take the form of social media, texting, calling or sending unwanted gifts. Stalking steals lives so please tell someone.

Majestics hosts big competition MAJESTIC Gymnastics Academy in Longwell Green hosted this year's South Gloucestershire schools competition. The event, in partnership with Castle Schools Education Trust, saw more than 10 schools entering teams of Key Stage 2 pupils to compete both individually and in a team event. Majestics director Michelle George said: “With the top teams progressing on to compete in the finals, our coaches had a very difficult job in scoring pupils who had obviously worked very hard beforehand to demonstrate some fantastic gymnastic skills! Well done to all who competed.” This is the third time Majestics have hosted the local competition.

Why we have a duty to combat the anti-vaxxers THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported that the number of measles cases worldwide has tripled in the first three months of 2019 compared with the same time last year. This disease – which is entirely preventable through vaccination – is killing people. New York City recently declared a public health emergency after more than 285 cases of measles, ordering mandatory vaccinations in one neighbourhood. In the UK, take-up of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine for children reaching their second birthday decreased for the fourth year in a row and is now at 91.2 per cent, the lowest it has been since 2011/2012. What is going on, and does it affect us in Bristol? The UK is seeing more cases of measles. This is due in part to children who went unvaccinated 20 years ago, after now-discredited research caused a scare about

the safety of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. It was claimed by Dr Andrew Wakefield that the vaccine was linked to autism – but his research was found to be wrong, and Dr Wakefield was struck off. Now the anti-vaccination movement – "anti-vaxxers" – and the false information that they spread about vaccines is posing a significant health threat. They share conspiracy theories about vaccinations, false scientific research and spread stories that feed distrust in governments and drug manufacturers. False information left unchallenged is sometimes just as damaging as great truths left untold. Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways of avoiding disease. It prevents 2 - 3 million deaths a year, and a further 1.5 million could be avoided if global coverage of vaccinations improved. Looking after and seeking to protect young children forms part

of our innate human behaviour. When people choose not to vaccinate – for all the right reasons but based on wrong information – not only do they put lives at risk, they also start to undo the social norms that mean that vaccination is a choice to protect the whole community as well as the individual. As part of the Bristol Travel Clinic, Ellacombe Pharmacy works to the highest ethical and professional standards. We signpost to free NHS provision where possible while also providing a service with a low-price guarantee that includes support for charities such as Meningitis Now and Water Aid. Our service was set up after a patient lost a relative to meningitis. It is our response to using our skills and the science available to protect you and your family. From chicken pox, meningitis B to rabies, vaccinations can protect you and your loved ones.

n NEWS PLANS to turn the Royal British Legion building in Staple Hill into homes have been rejected for a second time. Developer Charlotte Alsopp has been told her proposals to demolish part of the building in Kendall Road and convert the rest into seven homes are “unacceptable”. Ms Alsopp wanted to build two one-bed flats, four two-bed flats and a two-bed house on the site in Kendall Road. But the plans were rejected by South Gloucestershire Council on April 9 with the authority saying the proposals would be harmful to the character of the area. Balconies and windows planned for the north of the building would impact on the privacy of neighbours, and future occupiers would suffer from a lack of light, the council said.

Legion site plans refused The authority added that the parking and bin storage areas were too near bedrooms and would be “detrimental” for people living there. A report said: “Overall the scheme would have an unacceptable impact on the residential amenity of both future occupants and existing neighbours.” Plans to convert the building had originally been submitted last year but were refused in December. They were amended and resubmitted in February but the council said the new application did not address the design concerns of the first. The club closed suddenly

at the end of 2016 under mysterious circumstances, with the British Legion's head office refusing to explain why it had shut. The 0.2 acre site includes a ground floor main hall, meeting room and kitchen and a first floor function room and reception room. The building had been marketed by property agent Alder King which announced the building had been sold for “in excess of £315,000” just days before the plans were turned down by the council last month. Neighbours had told the authority they weren't happy with the scheme because it would invade their privacy.

One objector said: “Built at a right angle to the road, the proposed houses would overlook the back gardens of most houses at the top of Kendall Road, Upper Station Road and some of Acacia Road, which means most would lose either all or part of the privacy and security of their gardens.” Another resident said: “Owners of the proposed new property will be able to stand on their balcony and look directly into my garden and rear windows.” They also said there were already parking problems in the area and the development would only add to them.

Cannabis farm found in raid

Here come the bears A COLOURFUL collection of bears has moved in to South Gloucestershire’s Wild Place Project. A trail of 20 hand-painted bear sculptures will greet visitors to the attraction near Cribbs Causeway until September. Visitors will be able to follow a route around the park to discover the 6ft bears. The sculpture trail is being launched ahead of the arrival of real European brown bears at the attraction, which is run by Bristol Zoo, when a new exhibit called Bear Wood opens in July. Work is now under way creating the exhibit, which will also be home to wolves, lynx and wolverine and promises to be the best bear exhibit in the country. Visitors will be able to walk through the seven-and-a-half acre exhibit on a raised walkway through the trees. New 180-degree, floor-toceiling glass viewing areas and ‘dens’ will give visitors an upclose view of the animals living alongside each other in British woodland, as they would have done thousands of years ago.

31

The sculpture trail has been created with Wild in Art, which developed the Wow! Gorillas trail with Bristol Zoo Gardens in 2011, to celebrate the Zoo’s 175th birthday. All 20 sculptures have been sponsored by organisations as part of a fundraising campaign for Bear Wood. Among them is E.L.M Legal Services Ltd, which offers professional will writing and estate planning services. The firm gave the artist painting the E.L.M bear a brief to make its bear (centre, left) look businesslike and professional,

and the finished sculpture, called Will, certainly looks the part. Managing director Jim Emsley said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Wild Place Project on this fantastic summer sculpture trail and are very happy with the design of Will the Bear.” Dr Justin Morris, chief executive of Bristol Zoological Society, said: “We are very much looking forward to unveiling our bear sculpture trail this spring and are very grateful to E.L.M for their support of this fantastic event.”

POLICE who raided a home in Mangotsfield found a cannabis farm. A man and a woman were arrested when police with a search warrant arrived at the property in Long Road on April 4.Officers found 100 plants in a purpose-built area underneath a garage at the address. The 44-year-old man and 40-year-old woman, both from Mangotsfield, were detained on suspicion of being concerned in the production of cannabis. Both were released under investigation to allow for further enquiries to take place and had not been charged as the Voice went to press. The raid was part of Operation Remedy, a series of actions organised by Avon and Somerset police aimed at taking action on what the force says are the three main crime concerns of communities in the area: knife crime, drug misuse and burglary. Anyone with information about the Mangotsfield incident can call the police on 101 and quote the crime reference number 5219 072 663.

Appeal for secretary LONGWELL Green Sports Football Club are looking for a new secretary to take over from Dave Heal who is standing down after many years of loyal service. The club play in the Toolstation Western League and also have a Somerset County Floodlit under 18s side. Chairman John Gibbs said: “Longwell Green is a very friendly club and is well known for having a very active social side at the Shellard’s Road base. “The role may well suit somebody willing to put something back into their local community or into the game of football.” Although a voluntary position, all out of pocket expenses will be paid. The role includes registration, transfers of players, liaising with league officials, match officials and Gloucestershire FA. There will be full support from the chairman, committee and everybody at the club. If you are interested please contact John on 07815794440 or email johngibbs195@gmail.com

'Join us for rugby and muddy madness' TWO local rugby teams are looking for new members to join them for the upcoming season. Cleve Rugby Club need boys to join their under 10s and 11s teams from September. The club has recently been working hard to build the teams back up after losing most of their players last season, but they still need more members to join them. Louise Wilcox has been involved with Cleve Rugby for many years and now acts as an administrator for the under 10s and 11s teams. Her three sons play for the under 9s, under 11s and under 13s, and speaking about her involvement with the team. She said: “My youngest son started playing for the under 8s, however most of the side moved to another team at the end of last season, which meant when they came back after the summer the under 9s and 10s only had three players between them. "As a result my husband stepped up to be coach and we got permission from the RFU to join the teams together, so although we are now back up to 17 players from September they will have to split back up again. “The boys take part in fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for

kit and equipment such as a gazebo for tournaments, and they recently took part in a 5km ‘muddy madness’ obstacle race at Mojo Active in Thornbury. They all turned up in their rugby kit, and we also had parents and siblings take part too. Overall there were 30 of us, and we have raised around £2000 in total through sponsorship which is fantastic. “The club is part of the whole community, and we’re like a family – it’s a great to be part of it and we’d love more people to join us.” The teams train on Tuesday nights from

Will Writing & Estate Planning

6.15-7pm, and on Sunday mornings they either have matches or play in tournaments. The rugby season runs from September to the end of April, and the club is looking for boys to join them for fitness sessions throughout summer so that they are ready to start playing in September. A single team membership at the club costs £115 for the year, and includes match day kit, shorts, shirts and socks. To find out more about joining the under 10s and 11s teams from September, contact Louise by calling: 07944 007190 or emailing: louise. wilcox@hotmail.co.uk

n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Afternoon WI OUR thanks to Esther Hall from St Peter's Hospice for her very interesting and informative talk to us at our April meeting. The hospice is Bristol's only adult hospice charity, providing free 24 hour care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses. They continue supporting a population of almost one million and providing excellent end of life care for patients and their families. In November last year the hospice was reopened for inpatients after a massive refurbishment which had taken two years to complete. The people of Bristol, the surrounding communities, businesses, generous grants from organisations and gifts from wills, had raised £2.53m towards the cost. With a new unit featuring 15 individual en-suite rooms for patients, beautiful gardens and community rooms, it signifies a huge upgrade for the hospice. They are now able to admit patients within two weeks. After a patient diagnosis is made and referral to the hospice,

they are assessed by the medical team at Brentry. A decision is then made on the best way to support them, either within the hospice or at home with the help of St Peters Hospice community nurses. Following a remarkable year the hospice will continue to develop and expand with on going support from fundraising within the area. The day to day running costs of the hospice allow for the care of more than 2,200 patients and their family members each year, 40 per cent of these remaining in their own homes. As a local charity, all of the care is provided free of charge, however it costs about £20,000 each day to provide that care. The NHS provide about a quarter of this cost and the remainder has to be relied upon from gifts, fundraising and more than 50 charity shops and 65 textile banks. Esther answered several questions from members, it was obvious that she has a caring passion for her line of work. If you would like to join us our next meeting is on May 13 (second Monday every month) at Hanham Community Centre at 1.30pm. We are looking forward to Spering

Longwell Green WI litter pick Court Animal Rescue Centre coming to talk to us and perhaps bringing some rescued animals for us to admire. Longwell Green WI LONGWELL Green members joined the Great British Spring Clean this week and litter-picked around the local area. We walked around Longwell Green and Willsbridge Mill collecting litter as we went. Among the more bizarre items we found were a child’s bike wheel, a cycle helmet and a charity bag full of clothes dumped in a hedge! Overall, we were pleasantly surprised by the relatively small amount of litter we found and congratulate the residents of Longwell Green for keeping the area tidy! There is no April meeting because of Easter but our May meeting with be when we chose the resolution to carry forward for next year, together with a talk about Denman College and some fun games Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 986 4782. Sandra Hill Hanham Evening WI

Elvis impersonator Dick from Wick entertains WI audience

consider as the entertainment capital of the world and many members got into the spirit of the evening by coming along dressed in their “sparkly” outfits. There was a strictly no gambling policy in operation, apart of course from the obligatory WI raffle, but the room was festooned with gambling paraphernalia along with all sorts of other memorabilia one would expect to find in Vegas. There was even a table “Vegas” fun quiz to help keep members amused The evening got off to an excellent start with a buffet supper curtesy of “Janine” but then came the highlight of the evening. Elvis entered the building. Elvis tribute act Richard Kinsman, otherwise known as Dick from Wick, appeared on stage to entertain us with songs from Elvis and evoking memories of Elvis in his heyday. Following an interval when the quiz results were announced Richard returned to the stage to bring us songs and entertainment from other world-famous acts that have graced the stages in Vegas. There was a sight to behold when members started dancing in the isles. As Elvis left the building members agreed that they had enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining evening. April saw an entertaining meeting when Dr Francis Borroughs, a renown organist, regaled us with amusing stories and anecdotes in his talk entitled “Seated One Day at the Organ” Having previously entertained the branch last year he returned to surpass himself in giving us funny tales from “matches and dispatches” he has witnessed over his career. The evening concluded with the branch organising a fund raising Easter stall. Dianna Coles

n ADVERTISING FEATURE

A day in the life… Lee, 25, is one of Your Care’s assistants and has been for two years. Here’s a glimpse into one of his working days… Morning It’s Wednesday and I wake up around 6am. I leap out of bed, shower, dress and just have time to grab a coffee before setting off to work. My first visit is to Mrs. Grainger in Longwell Green. She’s a character! Always telling jokes and laughing.

When I arrive, she is still fast asleep, so I wake her gently and then make her a cup of tea to drink in bed. She is an avid watcher of Coronation Street, so we have a catch-up about the happenings of Wetherfield from last night, and then I help her out of bed and into the shower. Once dressed, and she has put on her lipstick (she has such high standards and always likes to look her very best!), I help her downstairs where we make her breakfast together. Whilst Mrs Grainger

eats breakfast I tidy her kitchen, then dust and vacuum downstairs. I pop a note on our group chat to let Trudy (the evening carer) know that I have left a steak and kidney pie for Mrs Grainger to have for tea this evening. Once settled for the morning I leave Mrs Grainger and remind her that Trudy will see her later this afternoon to sort out her tea and put her to bed. My next visit is to Mr Wilkinson over in Bitton. He has dementia and as his son lives down in Cornwall, there’s no-one local to help him out. Mr. Wilkinson is already up and about by the time I arrive. I look in his fridge and check the sell by dates. I throw a few bits out and then make a list for the supermarket. We then both set off in my car for our shopping trip. We sing along to songs on his favourite 60s radio station. When Manfred Mann came on, his face lit up; it really was a picture! I love going to the shops with Mr Wilkinson as he chats to everyone down the aisles and makes everyone smile. Once we have all his shopping we venture back home,

where I put everything away. It is almost lunch time, so I make him his favourite, poached salmon, new potatoes and vegetables and make sure he has everything he needs for the afternoon. Then I shoot over to Miss Townsend, who has macular degeneration and therefore often struggles with the small things in life that we take for granted. I cook her a hot meal, she has real difficulties seeing the dials on the oven, and I sit with her as we eat lunch together. We chat about ‘The Archers’ as she loves to listen to the happening of Ambridge on her radio each day. I check all of Miss Townsend' s post – she cannot see to read her letters – and I confirm her dental appointment for next week. Back at home I settle down with my tea to watch a bit of telly. I think about Mrs Grainger, Mr Wilkinson and Miss Townsend and I smile. I really feel I do something worthwhile with Your Care and I’m looking forward to seeing them all again tomorrow; it’s such rewarding work with really lovely clients.

At Your Care, we believe that the right care assistant really makes a difference. Here’s how we can support you: Helping with the housework Going out for the day Assisting with social events/appointments Your personal care ‘I’d be lost without Your Care’

“My personal assistants are kind, patient and encouraging, I would not be able to leave my flat without their help.” Rachel Wicks
