Moped tragedy of Daniel, 16 Fatal collision on ring road throughabout A 16-year-old boy from Hanham has died on the ring road’s controversial through-about. Daniel Davies, a pupil at Digitech school in Warmley, had owned his moped for just four days before he was involved in the fatal collision with a car on Easter Sunday. He had spent his whole life in Hanham, attending Samuel White’s, Hanham Abbots and Hanham Woods schools along with sister Beckey, 18. His first part-time job was a newspaper round delivering Hanham & Longwell Green Voice. Daniel’s mother, Sam Davies, said her son had blossomed since starting at Digitech. She said: “He really found himself once he started there. Turn to Page 4

Flip Out activity centre set to close INDOOR activity centre Flip Out has announced the closure of its Longwell Green branch. The building is set to be demolished as part of the redevelopment of the Aldermoor Way part of Longwell Green trading estate and shopping area. The site’s new owners have issued a compulsory purchase order to Flip Out, forcing it to close. The venue began as a trampoline park, before removing the trampolines and replacing them with inflatables and a ninja tag climbing frame just before the pandemic. As well as offering a range of bookable play sessions across the week, it is also a popular venue for children’s birthday parties. Flip Out marketing manager Vicki Rowland said: “Due to the redevelopment of the area and a compulsory purchase order, we are sadly closing our doors on 23 May 2022. “As a thank you to our guests for their support, we’re offering a 20 per cent discount on any visits to Flip Out Bristol between now and 23 May using the code BRISTOL20.” Developer West Midland Authority Pension Fund wants to replace the warehouse-style buildings alongside Aldermoor Way and Marsham Way.

They would be replaced with work space, retail or leisure outlets plus a drive-through restaurant or a hotel, creating 411 new jobs. The plans have not yet been approved by South Gloucestershire council. Parent Kathryn Harris revealed on social media that Flip Out staff had phoned her to cancel her daughter’s 10th birthday party. She wrote: “Booked Flip Out less than a week ago for the end of May and they’ve just told me they’re closing down just before May half term so they’ve cancelled my booking. “V disappointed daughter. “They were super apologetic though. I felt for them if they’ve spent all day phoning people to cancel parties.” Flip Out was originally set up in Australia in 2012, running a network of outdoor trampoline parks. The Longwell Green branch is one of 85 Flip Outs spread across nine countries. Flip Out’s neighbour, Majestic Gymnastic Academy, has also spent the past year trying to either stop the redevelopment or find a new venue. The club now hopes to move to a new, purpose-built building on the former Grange school site as part of £3.84m development by South Glos Council.

Murder charge A KINGSWOOD woman has appeared in court charged with the murder of local father Bradley Lewis. Abigail White, 23, of Chipperfield Drive, appeared at Bristol Crown Court and has been remanded in custody until a further court hearing. Mr Lewis, 22, was a father of four. He died in the early hours of Saturday 26 March after suffering a serious injury during an incident at a house in Chipperfield Drive. Police said a forensic post-mortem examination has confirmed Mr Lewis died from a single stab wound to the chest. His family have released

High St businesses chip in to help children NEARLY 20 Hanham businesses have chipped in to buy three planters for Samuel White’s infant school. A group of parents teamed up to raise funds for the waist-high veg trugs, which are the ideal height for young children to try their hand at gardening. The planters will be used in the outdoor learning area of the Year 1 classrooms, although the other year groups will also have access to them. It’s hoped they will increase opportunities for outdoor learning and enhance the children’s scientific knowledge of plants. Businesses on Hanham High Street were asked to contribute. Together they donated £525, enough to buy the planters as well as compost and plants. Sara Borrott, one of the fundraising parents, said: “We wanted to go back to how things used to be in a community and try and garner support locally, as we’ve struggled as a school charity to run our usual events due to Covid over the last few years. “The planters give all children the

opportunity to experience the joys of being able to grow things themselves, regardless of whether or not they have gardens at home, and it will be something that continues to benefit all children as they move through the school. “In time, when we start running clubs again, Gardening Club will also be able to benefit. “The children are really excited about using the trugs, and have been taking great care of the seeds that they have been growing in their classrooms in preparation for planting out. “They’ve come up with lots of good ideas for things that we can plant and grow in the future.” The local business that donated included DW Smith, Eclectic, Fleurtations, Hanham Community Centre, Hanham Dental, Italian Kitchen, Little Pink Café, Matt’s Place, Paul Tompkins Physio, Peter’s Barber Mode, PLH Tooles, Pzazz and SH Family Law. B&Q donated bedding plants and bulbs and Fonthill garden centre donated compost.

Schools trust provides iPads for refugees Futura Learning Partnership has donated 20 iPads to Saltford Community Association to be distributed to Ukrainian refugee families who are being hosted in Saltford and the surrounding area. The Community Association has formed a support group to help hosts and the families coming to stay with them. Chris Essex, the association’s treasurer, said: “The Community Association will be welcoming each family with a substantial Welcome Pack. We are aware of over 20 potential hosts in and around Saltford and the first family arrived on Easter Saturday. We understand they were in tears when they opened the Welcome Pack complete with one of the donated iPads. These iPads will be so helpful in allowing families to translate as well as communicate with family and friends in Ukraine or elsewhere in Europe.”

Richard May hands the iPads to Chris Essex Richard May, Head of IT Services at Futura Learning Partnership, said: “When we heard of this need, we immediately wanted to help. We had a stock of iPads which we had recently retired from use in

our local schools. We are very aware that we had received gifts of IT equipment from local businesses and members of the public during the Covid pandemic, so it seemed only fitting if we could help give something back to the community at this time.” The iPads are no longer suitable for use in schools as they are not compatible with the latest educational software. They were refurbished before being handed over for the refugee families. Chris Essex added: “We also have over 40 other volunteers who want to help the support group with teaching English, providing Welcome Packs and other items, picking refugees up from airports and transporting them around, helping at social events and offering Ukrainian and Russian translation. Many thanks to Futura Learning Partnership for the donated iPads.”

Community heroes receive awards PEOPLE in South Gloucestershire who have given up their time to serve the community have been recognised in this year's Chair’s Community Awards. The council says the awards are a chance to "celebrate the hard work and dedication of volunteers in our communities who display outstanding commitment in giving their time and effort to help others". In total 18 awards were given to people and groups from across the district who give up their time to help others. They included Lesley Brain, who has undertaken voluntary work in Oldland Common and North Common for more than

10 years. She volunteers at St Annes Church and manages the booking of the Orchard Room, encouraging many community events to be held there. Her citation said : "She is well known, enthusiastic and encourages others to litter pick and take an active responsibility for the area that they live in. Her volunteering has a positive impact on the local community." Roger and Carol Fowler, who have been involved at North Common Village Hall since the 1970s, were also honoured. Their citation said: "They have served as Chair and Secretary for most of this time. They have been key holders and responsible for bookings for so many years.

Without them there would be a very limited service. They have worked tirelessly to improve the facilities at the hall and grounds. They have given a lifetime of service to the community, and they deserve recognition for a job well done." South Gloucestershire Council chair Ruth Davis presented the awards along with the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire Susie Hewson, and the executive principal and principal respectively of sponsors South Gloucestershire & Stroud College, Kevin Hamblin and Sara-Jane Watkins. Cllr Davis said: "It has been an absolute pleasure to meet and recognise the volunteers

who make such a significant and important contribution within South Gloucestershire. “Volunteers have been a vital lifeline for many residents through the pandemic and I was moved to learn of people’s selfless actions. "Despite the challenges, many volunteers managed to continue with their voluntary work to support our public open spaces and local wildlife, which is testament to their commitment. “It’s important that we shine a light on the work of our local volunteers who do so much to help others. These people are community heroes and I personally thank each of them for their efforts.”

Daniel, 16, dies four days after getting moped From Page 1 He was incredibly bright and had a great knowledge about stocks and shares. I’d opened an investment account which he then managed. “He had just been offered a brick laying apprenticeship. He was planning to do that for a few years until he made enough money to work with stocks and shares full-time. “He was due to do a couple of days’ work experience for his apprenticeship a few days after he died. He’d just bought his work trousers and steel-toe-cap boots ready for it.” It is the second tragedy to hit the family in a matter of months. Mrs Davies said: “Last year my husband was really unwell with his mental health and took his own life. “Daniel was very pragmatic about it and kept thinking positively about things. He was madly in love with his girlfriend, Kasha [correct], who he’d been with for just over a year. “He was so excited about his life and was just buzzing around. “When he turned 16 he wanted a moped. I wasn’t sure about it but he said, ‘Dad would have allowed me to because he always wanted us to be independent.’ “I went with him to buy it on the Wednesday, and insured it for him. He wore his dad’s helmet. Then just four days later he was gone.” The family is now in the process of arranging Daniel’s funeral. A family friend has set up a social media hashtag #candle4daniel to bring together those who are mourning the teenager’s death. Avon and Somerset police have appealed for witnesses to call 101 and give the reference number 5222091120. A police spokesperson said: “Police were called to the A4174 Wraxall Road roundabout in Warmley after a car and a moped

£25m town centre revamp is on! REGENERATION plans for Kingswood have moved on after being formally approved by South Gloucestershire Council. Plans include pedestrianisation of Regent Street East, restoring Whitfield Tabernacle, improving parks, and building a new leisure centre in Kings Chase shopping centre. The council bought the shopping centre a year ago and has decided to introduce free parking there. Kingswood has been awarded £25 million to make the changes, from the Government’s Future High Streets Fund and match funding from the West of England Combined Authority. Of that funding, £10 million has already been spent buying the shopping centre. The plans have been in development since 2019 and more than 2,000 stakeholders and residents gave feedback at public consultations. They were approved by the cabinet on April 4. Cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Steve Reade said: “I am delighted that we have been able to bring forward this masterplan for Kingswood which captures a shared vision to invest in a more resilient,

successful and inclusive town centre. It’s important that we work closely with the community to plan for the future so I’m very pleased that such a large number of local people, business owners and other groups have enthusiastically contributed.” A steering group has been set up for the project, which included representatives of groups including Connecting Kingswood, Sainsbury’s, Kingswood Business Associstion and leisure centre operator Circadian Trust. But Councillor Toby Savage, leader of the Conservative-controlled council, who has come under fire for not including any Labour councillors on the steering group. Labour group leader Councillor Pat Rooney said it was wrong that none of the party’s six elected councillors who represent Kingswood wards – herself and Alison Evans for Woodstock, Sandie Davis and Kim Scudamore for New Cheltenham and April Begley and Andrea Reid – had been invited to join the steering group. This was despite the fact that they had been involved in the project from the start, including working with council officers to speak with residents throughout the recent

14-week consultation at a ‘pop-up’ shop in the shopping centre. She said: “Mr Savage has shown he isn’t listening to our Kingswood residents by pushing ahead with a town council for the area, after the council’s own consultation demonstrated Kingswood didn’t want one. “Now he’s gone a step further by excluding Kingswood’s own elected representatives from the steering group overseeing its £25 million regeneration. It shows that he doesn’t know, or care about, Kingswood – only his own political ambitions.” Councillor Savage said the Labour councillors had not engaged with a crossparty Policy Advisory Group (PAG) working to steer planning policy for the council. "Their continued absence has demonstrated a wilful attitude to not represent their communities when it matters. “Our view is that, in order to properly represent Kingswood, Labour members need to be consistently attending such meetings, not picking and choosing. At present, we feel we have only seen a half-hearted attempt by Labour to engage by means of grandstanding rather than cooperating," he said

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

We must resist calls for thousands more homes

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

AS the local MP, I have long championed the protection of our Green Belt countryside alongside a “brownfield first” policy of building the affordable homes we need locally. It’s why I am therefore incredibly concerned about proposals to impose 37,000 more houses onto South Gloucestershire – nearly 10,000 more than is needed to meet local demand. I am supportive of South Gloucestershire Council’s position of resisting the WECA Mayor’s unreasonable demand, given that it will lead to unsustainable urban sprawl locally and the loss of precious Green Belt countryside, stretching from Shortwood to Siston and Warmley and onwards to Oldland Common and the Hanham Hills. It appears to resurrect the previous hated Regional Spatial

Strategy (RSS) that sought to build 10,000 homes on Kingswood’s Green Belt. Even before becoming the area’s MP I campaigned alongside others locally against these plans, which were promptly scrapped with a change of Government in 2010. Let us be clear – we do need to build more homes locally. We all want our next generation to be able to afford a home of their own in the area they grew up in, if they so choose. And South Gloucestershire already has a proud record of delivering the new homes needed to help people realise their dreams. In 2020/21 we built 1,650 new homes and over the last 5 years we have built 2,332 affordable homes. This has generated over £80 million in new investment in infrastructure to support these

new communities, whether that’s new schools, transport or green spaces. Agreeing to this target would mean South Gloucestershire having to agree to take housing overspill from neighbouring areas such as Bristol – and with little commitment to the extra infrastructure needed to support this. It would mean abandoning the Commons Connections project that aims to link a network of over 60 green spaces across Kingswood to help nature recover. I would urge residents to join our efforts to ensure that South Gloucestershire can plan for a sensible number of new homes, whilst protecting our local green spaces that have proven to be lifelines during the pandemic for our physical and mental health.

Ethical community cafe set to open A NEW community cafe for Hanham will open its doors to customers on Thursday 12 May. Located inside Hanham Methodist church in Chapel Road, the cafe will operate on a pay-as-you-wish basis. Katie Andrews, one of the cafe’s managers, said: “Every item on the menu will have a suggested donation, but people will pay what they can afford. Some people might want to ‘pay it forward’ by over-paying in order to fund someone else’s meal.” On offer will be breakfasts, including a full English as well as porridge and granola. Lunchtimes will include a daily special such as lasagne or chilli, as well as baked potatoes, toasties and cakes. The cafe aims to be sustainable, using local suppliers including Hanham Common

Butchers and the the Warmley Bakehouse. It will also use donations from FareShare, which redistributes surplus food to charities. Eventually, this will be supplemented with produce from the community allotment. The counter and some tables are also sustainable, made from timber supplied by Somerset Wood Recycling. Easter performances

Trees for the Queen

THE story of Easter was acted out by children at St Barnabas primary school in two end-ofterm performances. Pupils from Years 3 and 4 performed musical numbers and took on the roles of the characters in the story. Scenes included palm leaves leading Jesus’s way into Jerusalem, and the garden of Gethsemane. Both performances took place at St Barnabas church in North

Common. They were attended by the rest of the school, parents and carers, as well as school governors and members of the church. Teacher Sally Cornelius said: “The effort and enthusiasm from each and every child was incredible. “The actors were clear and precise and the power behind the singing was just beautiful. “It was one of our best performances ever!”

PUPILS from Longwell Green Primary School planted tree seedlings to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Headteacher Darren Brown joined children from the school’s Eco Council to dig holes for the oak whips on the green opposite the school.Year 6 pupils Eden and Vince were joined by Reception pupils Zara and Elana for the planting. Steve Hicks from Hanham Abbots Parish Council, which organised the planting, came along to help the children plant the seedlings.

ESCAPE-pain courses at Active Centres Circadian Trust, who run and operate Active Lifestyle Centres across South Gloucestershire, have been commissioned by the Clinical Commissioning Group, NHS (CCG) to deliver a series of ESCAPE-pain courses. The courses will run up to March 2023. Active Centres' mission is to inspire active lifestyles. As one of South Gloucestershire’s largest employers, operating five Active Lifestyle Centres (Bradley Stoke, Kingswood, Longwell Green, Thornbury & Yate), Active Centres’ strategy focuses on tackling inactivity to help people stay active throughout their lives within a healthy community. Customers are at the heart of Active Centres' lifestyle journey, and with the centres' expertise, partnerships and collaborations, and investments in facilities and technology, they are changing people's active lives. Now, Active Centres have been commissioned by the NHS CCG to run ESCAPEpain courses.

ESCAPE-pain stands for Enabling Self-management and Coping with Arthritic Pain using Exercise. It is an evidence-based, group rehabilitation course for people with chronic joint pain developed by Professor Mike Hurley. The progressive exercise programme will help people learn how to cope with pain, how to exercise safely and pace themselves, manage their symptoms, and be around people who have the same condition. Over 8.75 million people in the UK suffer from chronic joint pain, which can prevent them from being active. However, activity will help improve physical and psychological wellbeing and ensure a healthy social life. The Escape-pain courses will be available in Active Lifestyle Centres across South Gloucestershire. The courses are aimed at people over 45 years, who have been suffering from chronic knee and hip arthritic pain for three months or more, and need a supervised fitness

programme so that they can work toward independent living and mobility. Each session will help participants understand their condition, educate them so that they can go away, and be more independent. Gloria Isaac took part in one of the Escape-pain courses. She said, "Attending the Escape-pain course, it has benefited me as: I was having cortisone injections in my right knee 6 monthly. I however have not felt the need for any further treatment. I have seen improvement in my wellbeing mentally, physically and health-

wise. I've also seen improvements in my muscular strength around my knee and other muscles too. I am now continuing with a follow up class for arthritis at the leisure centre, so I benefited from the course a lot.” Jim Rollo, Head of Lifestyles, said, " Following the success of our GP Healthy Lifestyle Referral Scheme, Active Centres are proud to receive this commission, and deliver this vital service that has the potential to improve the lifestyle of so many people within our local communities who suffer from chronic knee and hip arthritic pain." He adds, “The Escapepain courses are underway, and participants have already noticed improvements mentally and physically.” If you think you could benefit from taking part in any of the above sessions, please speak with your local GP practice or Health Care Professional. Visit https:// activecentres.org/escape-pain for further details.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

New help for communities fighting crime I AM delighted to tell you about a significant new approach that sees Avon and Somerset Police team up with partners across the South West to combine their operational powers in tackling cross-border drugs supply activities, known as Operation Scorpion. Coinciding with National County Lines Intensification Week, the aim of this activity was to send a strong message to criminals that the South West is #NoPlaceForDrugs. The five regional police services – Avon and Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire – alongside their respective PCCs, the British Transport Police, South West Regional Organised Crime Unit and Crimestoppers, set aside regional boundaries just as criminals engaging in drugs activity do, to harness

their collective power and disrupt the South West drugs market, dismantling drugs supply networks and arresting those who profit from them. The forces used a range of tactics, including enhanced surveillance of the road and transport networks, increased high-visibility patrols in areas of high demand, carrying out warrants at addresses used for drug dealing and welfare checks on vulnerable people. As a result, a number of successful results were achieved in our force area, including 64 arrests and 17 warrants executed. Five known county lines were disrupted and at least 41 weapon sweeps took place, along with 178 visits to vulnerable people’s addresses. The results from this collective action speak for themselves and highlights what can be achieved

when a borderless approach to drugs enforcement is taken. By coming together collectively in this way, we can send a strong message to criminals and those who exploit young and vulnerable people in Avon and Somerset that the South West is no place for drugs. In other news, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Claire Hiscott as my Deputy PCC to support me and my office in ensuring Avon and Somerset Police is an effective, efficient and legitimate police service. Claire was a councillor for eight years in the Horfield Ward area, a cabinet member for education and skills, and an area chairman for Bristol and Gloucestershire Conservatives. With the recent publication of my Police and Crime Plan, work is well underway in delivering against my priorities and

objectives. I know Claire has a particular interest in violence against women and girls as well as disproportionality, and I look forward to her supporting me in these workstreams. Claire will also support me on engagement days, meeting with local people, partners and organisations to find out how we can support them and address their police and crime concerns.

Praise for care home STAFF wellbeing improvements were showcased at Collingwood care home in Longwell Green during a visit by Councillor Toby Savage. Manager Lizzy Hilliam showed the leader of South Gloucestershire Council around, introduced him to residents and staff, and discussed the ongoing challenges faced by the care sector. The 26-bed home caters for older people facing difficulties living in their own home. Its staff room has recently been refurbished. Cllr Savage said: “The care industry is one of those hit hardest during the Covid pandemic with the brilliant staff some of the biggest local heroes, demonstrating an incredible level of resilience despite the pressure they faced. I was delighted to visit Collingwood and find out how things have changed as we continue to find our way back to normality, and the fantastic work they are doing to keep the home a brilliant place to live and work.” The home was visited by the Care Quality Commission in January last year and rated Good.

Midnight Walk for hospice turns tropical THE Midnight Walk returns to Bristol on Saturday June 18 with a tropical beach theme. The sponsored walk is an opportunity to help raise funds for people who have a lifelimiting illness and their families who are cared for by Bristol charity, St Peter’s Hospice. The Midnight Walk starts at Millennium Square where walkers gather from 8.30pm. Setting off at dusk, the party trail takes each group of walkers past some of Bristol’s most iconic sights, following a route by the harbourside designed to take in the view of the SS Great Britain and the Clifton Suspension Bridge lit up in the moonlight. Once the finish line is crossed, there’s a silent disco. Sarah Allen-Gunn, director of fundraising and marketing for St Peter’s Hospice, says: “Come and join us for what promises to be a fantastic night out!

If it’s News Email: news@hanhamandlongwellgreenvoice.co.uk

“Whether you bring friends, family or both, there’s always an incredible atmosphere when hundreds of Hospice supporters gather together to take on a challenge for a cause close to their hearts. Last year’s walk raised £44,000 and with more people taking part this year, we’re hoping to beat that incredible amount” Registration costs £20, which helps to cover the cost of putting on the event, so the sponsorship raised, and donations made will go directly towards supporting Hospice patients and families across Bristol. If you can’t make it in person, then take on a virtual 5 or 10 mile walk challenge in your own way from wherever you are this June. There’s no age limit to The Midnight Walk Your Way so get your family together, go at your own pace on a route of your choice and make new memories.

Boost for community farm GRIMSBURY Community Farm will become more accessible to people with disabilities by having a Changing Places toilets installed. The community farm is one of six places in the county to have a new accessible toilet installed, as part of £135,000 of Government funding given to South Gloucestershire Council. Another will be installed elsewhere in Kingswood, in a location yet to be announced. It will mean the farm can be visited by many adults and young people who, until now, were offered no suitable toilet facilities at the site. Changing Places toilets include hoists, curtains, and full-sized changing tables and are larger than a standard disabled toilets to accommodate carers. The Changing Places toilet will be delivered with support from Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Councillor Rachael Hunt at Grimsbury Community Farm Earlier this year, South Gloucestershire Council revealed it is withdrawing funding for Grimsbury Community Farm, which will have to become financially independent in order to remain open. The council has said it will assist the farm to make

improvements to increase its income. Cabinet member Rachael Hunt said: “Changing Places toilets make a real difference to users and their families enabling them to take part in more recreational activities with dignity, confidence and freedom.”

n WHAT'S ON

n ANTIQUES 10 years of auctions

THIS May is a very special month for East Bristol Auctions as we celebrate ten years in business. That’s an entire decade of auctions, which equates to well over three-quarters of a million lots through our doors! What started as a small provincial saleroom has grown into one of the most in-demand auction houses in the country, and we couldn’t be more proud! So, in celebration of our ten years, I’ve written a list of my personal favourite Top Ten items we’ve had the pleasure of selling, in no particular order: 1) One of the very first ‘big’ lots we sold c2013 was an antique Chinese bronze bowl. Discovered at a local car boot sale for the princely sum of two pounds by the vendor. We sold it for £2,800. 2) The only-known surviving original painting of The Fallen Madonna from the sitcom Allo Allo. Fans of the show will know why the painting is so famous! Even The Sun newspaper ran the story, and featured a picture of myself holding the lot on Page 3! £15,000 3) Del-Boy’s three-wheeled Reliant Regal Supervan III from Only Fools & Horses. Lovely jubbly at £23,000. 4) Dave Prowse’s Star Wars ‘Empire Strikes Back’ script - £28,000. 5) A napkin ring made for use aboard RMS Titanic (but subsequently placed aboard the sister ship Olympic). £200. 6) A 19th Century narwhal tusk walking cane, which we discovered during a local house call in the owner’s shed. It sold for £15,000. 7) Ronnie Barker’s original handwritten script for the famous Four Candles sketch from The Two Ronnies. A real spine-tingling moment when it sold for £28,000. 8) A Beatles programme from the Colston Hall. The vendor told me that although he was sat in the front row, he never actually got to hear the band amid all the screaming fans! £400. 9) A collection of Arthur Conan Doyle first editions and rare publications. Took weeks to catalogue which was a real pleasure, and sold for somewhere in the region of £20,000 combined. 10) A 19th Century grandfather clock made by a Hanham clockmaker c1860 - probably a few yards away from our saleroom! £1,500. Keep an eye out for some of our local valuation days coming your way soon. Here’s to another decade of selling wonderful things! Andy Stowe East Bristol Auctions

Covid hasn't gone away - and nor has the dreaded hay fever WELL, things are starting to get back to some normality. We are seeing more people enquiring about our Bristol Travel Clinic service. Its price-match-backed promise offers the lowest cost travel vaccination service in the South West. More people are also choosing to save time and embrace our prescription ordering app for convenience and control. With the warmer, sunnier weather, it is important to remember that the pandemic is not over; it is necessary to stay vigilant and follow sensible precautions. There are also more common queries about sneezing, runny noses, itchy eyes - hay fever. One in four people in Bristol are hay fever sufferers. Some

people develop hay fever for the first time as adults; most are lifelong sufferers. It usually begins in childhood or during the teenage years, more common in boys than girls. You are more likely to develop hay fever if you have a family history of allergies, particularly asthma or eczema. Hay fever is caused by an allergy to the pollen found in plants. Grass pollen is the most common cause, but pollen from trees and weeds can also bring on symptoms. Days off school and work are not uncommon. Perish that thought of mowing a lawn! The good news is that your community pharmacy can help you identify hay fever correctly and recommend the best treatment option, compatible with any other medical conditions

or prescribed regular medications. It is possible to manage hay fever by taking some basic precautions: • Showering and changing clothes after being outdoors • Staying indoors, avoid grassy areas when the pollen count is high (shut windows & doors) • Whenever possible, keep pets out of the house during the hay fever season. • Avoid smoking indoors as this can worsen symptoms. • Vacuum regularly and use an air purifier to extract pollen particles. wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen from getting in your eyes when you are outdoors At Ellacombe Pharmacy, we offer proven advice, information, and products to help control hay fever symptoms. n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM AFTERNOON WI The ladies of the Hanham Afternoon WI were able to return to their regular monthly meetings in September 2021 after the forced closure due to the pandemic. We had all kept in contact by telephone, with regular calls being made to each member by a committee member. This provided a very nice way to make new friends with ladies may have been unfamiliar with one another. Over the months since our first meeting recommenced our numbers have steadily increased, seeing on average about 50+ members and several new members have joined us as well. During our meeting in March, we were invited to bring to the April meeting, items of female toiletries and medicines to donate to the Ukraine Appeal. The generosity of our ladies was overwhelming as they brought enough items that filled a car. At our April meeting we had a very interesting talk and video film about the charity Mary's Meals. This is a global mission to feed the poorest children every day at school. This mission is entirely possible in a world of plenty, a world where the cost of an average meal in a restaurant can feed a child for a whole year with Mary's Meals. The charity began as a result of two brothers who were working on their father's farm in Scotland, seeing a report on TV on the 1990s about the conflict in Bosnia. They decided to organise a local appeal to take aid to the refugees who badly needed help and support, What they had not realised was how this would escalate. So much so that over the intervening thirty years their fundraising and sponsorship has grown worldwide and they are currently feeding two million children every day.

The beauty of this is that each community is coming together to assist in the distribution of these meals which in turn is providing work and economic security. Girls are being educated with their brothers and treated more fairly. The simplicity of the idea makes it attractive and the future looks bright. Our member's found the content of this presentation very stirring and made a substantial donation to the charity. At the beginning of the afternoon about 90% of the ladies had never heard of Mary's Meals. I am sure that no-one that was there will ever forget what they saw and heard that afternoon. What kind ladies we have, who were so generous this month. Hanham Afternoon WI have regular meetings on the second Monday of the month at 1.30pm at Hanham Community Centre. New members are always welcome, if you would like to join us please telephone me on 01179325027 or come along to our next meeting on 9th May when we have a speaker talking about “The River Avon.”. Ann Baulch HANHAM EVENING WI The long arm of the law came to visit us in March in the shape of our guest speaker, retired police officer Bryan Allinson. We are pleased to report that no fines were issued but what we did receive was a fine and thoroughly entertaining and informative talk from our guest. This was a return visit from Bryan who gave us the first part of his of talk before the pandemic struck and it was well worth the wait. This time he gave us a fascinating insight into his work as a Royal Protection Officer from ensuring the safety of senior Royals

Time to join? THIS year the country celebrates the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, but there is a role Her Majesty has held for an even longer period – she has been a member of the Women’s Institute since 1943; she joined Sandringham branch when she was still Princess Elizabeth, and attends annually. While we greatly admire and respect her life of duty and dedication, most of us would not relish the role of sovereign. But the role of WI member – definitely/maybe? The WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, and is open to all women aged 18 or over. Originating in Canada in the late 19th century, the first WI to open in

to stopping to find an open ice cream shop on a particularly hot summer’s day for a Royal who was feeling the heat. He also described his involvement in the introduction and development of the use of police helicopters in fighting crime. This saw the west country become a pioneer in their use and also took Bryan all over the world to advise foreign police forces on the introduction of helicopters and how to get the best from them. This was followed in early April by a visit to the Bristol Blue Glass factory on Bath Road, Bristol. This took the form of a demonstration in the art of glass blowing by two of the company’s long-standing employees where we were able to watch them practice their skills and also see them make a piece commissioned by one of our members. After the demonstration we had a talk on the history of glass blowing. This proved to be very fascinating and our group had many questions for the speakers. This was followed by a visit to their on-site shop where we were able to view some magnificent and unique pieces and of course make purchases. We concluded the afternoon with, what else, tea and cakes in the café at Arnos Vale Cemetery. Dianna Coles LONGWELL GREEN WI It has been a busy month for Longwell Green WI. We started the month with an interesting visit to Kingswood Heritage Museum where we had an informative talk about the museum. Members then wandered round the interesting displays reminiscing over some of the artefacts and photographs. This was followed by tea and cake

the UK was Anglesey in 1915. Two years later a National Federation of WIs was formed; a democratic, non-party political and voluntary organisation. Its structure is three tiered – local, county, and national. Membership gives the opportunity to meet other women and make friends, to participate in community events, hear speakers talk on a wide range of subjects, and have a cup of tea or coffee (and often cake too). The cost of membership is £44 for April 2022 to March 2023 (with pro rata rates for new members, joining mid-year), and entitles members to 11 meetings in the year. While a local institute is the obvious and favoured choice for most, women can join any institute they wish. Additionally, after the

which completed an enjoyable evening. For the first time we organised a Craft Day. Members were able to make a spring wreath, do rock painting, make coasters and cards as well as decorating a cherry blossom twig. It was a great success and everyone was pleased taking home what they had achieved during the day. To end the month we had our Birthday party which we combined with our celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The room and tables were decorated in red, white and blue and many of the members were also dressed in these colours. We had a delicious buffet meal followed by entertainment by Andy Tee while we danced the evening away. A good way to celebrate both occasions. We are looking forward to a trip to Fonthill Garden Centre for a demonstration of planting up hanging baskets and patio pots. Hopefully this will give us lots of inspiration for our gardens now that the weather is warming up. All of our walking groups have been out and about making the most of the lovely sunshine we have had this month. We have lots of groups that our members can participate in. There are book clubs, walking groups, knitting group and craft club. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at The Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI regular meetings are on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com, telephone 0117 9864782 or come along on the meeting evening. Linda Muller

last two years, and looking to the future, the WI has introduced several virtual WIs nationally, and this is expected to increase. Mention has been made of the local and national tiers; the county tier is Avon Federation of Women’s Institutes. This encompasses Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath & N E Somerset, and North Somerset. Within this area there are 100 local institutes. Avon Federation works to advise and enhance local WIs, and has committees dedicated to putting on events that all members have the opportunity to attend. What is the difference between an independent fostering agency and a Local Authority? Foster carers in the UK can apply to work with either a local authority (LA) or an independent fostering agency (IFA). The choice depends on what feels right for them. Finding good-quality foster parents to look after the rising number of children in care is an ongoing challenge for local authorities. SUPPORTING the diverse array of community groups across South Gloucestershire is important to the Council, given the vital services and opportunities they provide to local residents. Many of these groups, despite facing their own challenges, were indispensable in supporting our communities through the toughest times of the pandemic, and I’m pleased there are a number of ways the council is able to continue supporting them. Our Area Wide Grants help us support community organisations that are working for residents across South Gloucestershire, with the latest round having just opened for applications. A total of £70,000 is available this year and groups, as well as town and parish councils, have

until midnight on May 9 to apply. The maximum grant amount available for each recipient is £3,000, although we do have some flexibility for higher awards to be made in exceptional circumstances and subject to budget availability. The type of initiatives that could be eligible include projects that reduce isolation and exclusion, events that bring communities together, activities that promote health and well-being or services that address a particular community need. n NOSTALGIA GB BRITTON The footwear industry was one of the biggest employers in the Bristol area in the early 1900s, particularly the manufacture of heavy working boots. After World War Two, local company G B Britton became one of the six biggest manufacturers of footwear in the country following its introduction of the moulded work boot, a design that was easier and cheaper to make. Sadly, the import of cheaper products finally led to the closure of GB Britton’s factories in 2001. The history of GB Britton and other local manufacturers is being celebrated in a mural on display in Kingswood Library. The photograph from 1990 shows Anthony (Tony) Wedgewood Benn trying on shoes produced by GB Britton alongside Terry Walker, who was MP for Kingswood from 1974 to 1979 and a Councillor on both Avon County and South Gloucestershire Councils.

Dramway walks Group walks can be arranged along sections of the historic Dramway, led by Chris Quarry (Vice Chair of the Friends of Kingswood Museum). Groups must consist of at least 10 persons. Walks can take up to 2 hours, and there will be a charge of £4 per person (children under 12 are free). If your group is interested in arranging a guided walk please send an email to Linda Payne, kingswoodmuseum@ gmail.com, or call the museum on 0117 9605664.

Annual Douglas Cavalcade this month The annual Douglas Cavalcade is a regular feature of the Spring Bank Holiday at the end of May. This year’s Cavalcade takes place on Sunday 29th May, when dozens of vintage motorcycles will move off at 12 noon to ride the old factory test route. The photo shows the start of a previous Cavalcade. Kingswood Heritage Museum will host a talk by Bill Douglas on the Douglas story on Wednesday May 11th. The talk starts at 7.30 pm, with entrance from 7.00 pm. Admission costs £4, including tea or coffee, and seats can be reserved by calling 0117 960 5664.

Volunteer opportunities

The museum always welcomes new volunteers, and would especially like to hear from anyone willing to help with publicity and marketing, catering, administration and clerical support. n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Turning green words into green deeds

ONE of my favourite metaphors is that good politicians are ones able to make the weather. Sadly, this has acquired a literal sense as the deadly extent of the climate and ecological emergency has become clear. As Metro Mayor of the West of England, I’m constantly in awe of the fact that the people of our great region are more aware and determined to protect the planet than anywhere else in the country. The public are certainly way ahead of our politicians. Very many local people tell me that tackling global warming is a huge issue for them. But while the current government has some constructive words for our planet, in truth, a desperate situation is not improving anywhere near quickly enough. Great British species, including the red squirrel and hedgehogs, have been and are in worrying decline. Shamefully, our natural water sources – rivers, lakes, coastal and groundwater – are among Europe’s most polluted. In fact, some of our leading environment and conservation

organisations say we are now “among the most nature-depleted countries in the world”. Under my leadership, the West of England Combined Authority is getting on with the deadly serious business of fighting the climate crisis head on. I was delighted that the West of England’s brand-new climate action plan was voted through in April, as well as £10.4 million of new cash to get down to work on meeting our region’s necessarily ambitious net-zero targets. This includes making homes warmer through a retrofitting programme and kickstarting an electric vehicle revolution, both crucial to cutting today’s sky-high energy and fuel bills. These are steps we can all get behind, wherever we live in our region – from our most rural of communities to our impressive market towns and the great cities of Bristol and Bath. Together we can overcome the climate and ecological crisis. But as Metro Mayor I’m not able to do everything necessary and quickly enough.

writes for the Voice It will also require a massive input from national government if we are to succeed. I am therefore, irrespective of our different political colours, keen to work with government, or indeed, anyone else, to achieve net zero as quickly as possible and rebuild our regional wildlife and plants. As we know, words are easy. It is action that is now required. Let’s work together to tackle the climate emergency and protect our brilliant part of the world – before it is too late. Let’s make the weather together.

n K INGSWOOD AND HANHAM BOWLING CLUB WHAT a successful year 2021 was for everyone connected with Kingswood and Hanham Bowling Club. Despite all the challenges that Covid had thrown at us, the flame never died at and when we were able to get back to bowls we did; with much success both on and off the bowling green. The season started brilliantly with the inaugural Bowls England sponsored Bowls Big Weekend event at the end of May 2021. Our club really got behind this recruitment campaign and welcomed over 60 people along to our green. From those who attended, 35 took the next step and signed up to join us. We are so thrilled that they enjoyed their 1st season and are all planning to return for the coming season. The season went from strength to strength and our achievements on the green were outstanding. Our men's teams were triumphant: they did the double, winning both the North-East league and also the North-East Cup. Our ladies’ teams were once again triumphant and for the third year in succession were crowned County Champions for Gloucestershire in the National Ladies Top Club competition. In addition, the ladies were very successful in a number of County Competitions. They were crowned County Champions in two team events: Ladies fours (Jan Williams, Sue Osborne, Pam Salvage & Val Molton) and Ladies Senior Fours (Lindsay Collin, Sue Osborne, Pam Salvage, Val Molton). There was further success for one individual at County level with Val Molton being crowned County Champion in 3 separate

events: Ladies 4 wood Singles, Ladies 2 wood Singles and Ladies 4 wood Senior Singles. These successes meant our ladies all went on to represent Gloucestershire in the National Finals at Leamington Spa. It didn’t end there. 2021 saw Bowls England launch an awards event to recognise clubs and individuals in a whole host of categories, one of which was Bowls England Club of the Year. A group of us attended the awards night and we were ecstatic and extremely excited when despite being up against very strong competition from the other shortlisted clubs, Kingswood and Hanham were announced as Bowls England Club of the Year for 2021. Not wanting to rest on our laurels and always looking forward, we are now looking to build on the successes of 2021 and will be throwing open our gate to welcome people along to our Bowls Big Weekend event for 2022. This will take place on Saturday 28th May. Please check our website - Kingswood & Hanham Bowling Club – Where the fun starts! (kandhbowls.org), Our facebook page (Kingswood and Hanham Bowls Club) and also the Bowls England website and their social media accounts as more details on this event will be announced very soon. For now, get the date in your diary and follow up on one of the links to find out more and to secure a place so that you are ready to come along and join in the fun. We are very much looking forward to all that 2022 has to offer. Val Molton

n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB ABOUT 60 members of Keynsham Bowling Club gathered in the club house at the start of April for a pre season party. They enjoyed a high tea plus two entertainment sets from local singer Dave Dean who performs in the style of Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Matt Monro etc. A great afternoon was had by all. Just a week later the green opened for the season and 25 members enjoyed their first roll up on a green that is in superb condition. Fixtures have started by way of friendlies against local clubs before we get down to the serious stuff of league fixtures for both ladies and gents. Our chairman Ian Tweedie paid a visit to the local Tesco store to collect a cheque for £390 made payable to the club, being money raised from the sale of second

hand books in March. Our picture shows Ian being presented with the cheque by store manager Shane. Team manager Matthew said “We appreciate the tough times organisations have had during Covid in generating funds to continue paying overheads”. We thank the Tesco Team for their acknowledgement of our club in this way." On Sunday May 15th the club will be holding its Annual Open Day when our green plus all equipment will be made available to any member of the public who would like to come along and try their hand at playing bowls. It really is a doable sport with neither your age or gender impacting on your ability to play, plus being a great way to relax, keep fit and make new friends.

There will be two one hour sessions in the morning at 10.00 and 11.00 am with two more in the afternoon at 2.00 and 3.00 pm. If you are interested we would love to see you, so see contact our club secretary David Hockney by way of email at david. hockney@icloud.com or telephone him on his mobile at 07787 968874 to book a slot.
