£800k storm tank aims to cut risks of flooding WORK has begun in Hanham on an £800,000 scheme aimed at preventing flooding and relieving pressure on the sewer system. A new below-ground storage tank is being built under green space in Wilshire Avenue. This will enable more rainwater to be stored safely during heavy storms, helping to protect homes and businesses and reduce the automatic operation of storm overflows into the River Avon. The tank, which will be buried more than five metres into the ground, will be able to take in an additional 50,000 litres of water. It will accommodate increased flows from combined sewers, which carry both wastewater from homes and businesses and rain run-off from buildings and surfaces, during periods of heavy downpours. When the storm has receded, the excess water will then be returned to the sewer system to continue its onward journey to the city’s water recycling centre at Avonmouth where it is properly treated before Turn to Page 2

being safely returned to the environment. The Hanham project is part of an investment Wessex Water' says amounts to £3 million a month to reduce how often storm overflows operate and to protect the ecology of the river. A similar, larger storm tank is being installed in the car park of Bath RFC’s playing fields in Lambridge in the east of the cit. It will be able to hold more than 125,000 litres of storm water. A further 160,000 litres of storage space is being created further west within Victory Field, in Bradford on. Wessex Water project manager Andre Laranjeira said: "By installing this extra storage means we are aiming to reduce the potential for flooding and

cut the automatic operation of a nearby storm overflow by around more than 80 per cent as we continue to protect the ecology and health of the River Avon." “Overflows are designed as a relief valve to protect homes from flooding and if there is too much rainfall in the system, the overflow automatically discharges into watercourses. This storage can help to tackle that issue and ensure the water can be returned to the sewer system at a later time for proper treatment.’’ The company’s Storm Overflows Improvement Plan also includes measures to beef up the monitoring of overflows across the region and upgrades more than 40 water recycling centres to increase capacity, introducing more nature-based and low-carbon methods.

Tragic mum's campaign to fund bleed control kits THE family and friends of a Kingswood teenager who died from a single stab wound earlier this year are channelling their grief into raising funds and awareness of knife crime. Mikey Roynon, 16, died after being stabbed at a birthday party in Bath in June. Two boys, aged 15 and 16, have been charged with Mikey's murder and are expected to appear in court in December. Another 15-year-old boy was also charged with murder on October 24. Mikey’s mum Hayley Ryall has set up a charity, Mikey’s World, in his memory. She is backed by Mikey’s dad Spike, her partner Scott, and relatives and friends. Her aim is to get children off the streets and into positive activities at boxing gyms and music studios and to make young people and adults aware of methods that can help save lives after knife injuries. The charity is raising funds to buy bleed control kits, containing emergency dressings

Mikey Roynon and tourniquets to stop catastrophic bleeding. Supporters want to get these out to pubs, clubs and shops – and they are having a strong response from across the area. A training session held at Hanham Community Centre in October was well received and Hayley now hopes to organise another in Kingswood. Hayley told the Voice: “It’s completely

heartbreaking to lose your child. We need to do something to help our local community, raise awareness and stop this happening to other families.” The first big fundraiser was a 50k sponsored walk from Chippenham to Bristol, which brought in more than £4,000. A second sponsored walk, up Pen y Fan, took place on October 7, while a Golf Day at the Players Club in Codrington raised £4,500. Supporters are planning other activities including an Iron Man challenge, a London Marathon run, a five-a-side football competition, coffee mornings, skittles and bowling evenings. Hayley said: “I can’t thank them enough. The local community have really pulled together over this cause and given me a little faith back in humanity.” You can support Mikey’s World by following and sharing the Facebook page or donating to the Mikey’s World Just Giving fundraising link

Public asked to help choose charges and cuts AN end to free parking, hikes in charges and cuts to discounts on council tax bills are all in prospect as South Gloucestershire Council faces "incredibly difficult decisions" about its finances. The council needs to fill a £7.7 million hole in its finances before setting next year's budget and council tax. It has launched a series of consultations asking residents how money can be saved, from introducing charges for on and off-street car parking to cutting black bin collections and library opening hours. The prospect of introducing car parking charges has already sparked a fierce row between the council's Liberal DemocratLabour coalition and opposition Conservatives. A draft budget was approved in October, proposing an end to free parking, doubling green bin charges, a new admin fee for disabled blue-badge holders and a 20% rise in the cost of burial rights at cemeteries. The proposals are now open for public consultation. Consultants say a proposed increase in the garden waste charges from £30 to £60 would raise £1.3 million a year. The report said introducing car park charges would raise £1.5m to £2m a year, following set-up costs of up to £800,000, but further work was needed to consider details such as whether long and short stay charges and resident permit schemes were needed. Council-owned car parks

Council leader Claire Young and co-leader Ian Boulton say the authority faces some "incredibly difficult decisions" include Page Road, Byron Place and Haynes Lane in Staple Hill, St James in Mangotsfield, Kingswood shopping centre and the Lyde Green Park and Ride. Other shopping centre car parks including the Co-op in Downend, Emersons Green Retail Park and the Mall at Cribbs Causeway are not councilowned. Council co-leaders Claire Young (Lib Dem, Frampton Cotterell) and Ian Boulton (Labour, Staple Hill and Mangotsfield) said they wanted the consultation to be meaningful but agreed the savings and revenue targets would be “frustrating” for many residents. Cllr Young said: “We are going to be able to balance our budget for the coming year, but not without taking some incredibly difficult decisions

that will affect much-loved and relied-upon services. “We do have choices ahead, but none of them will be easy. “The reality is that councils across the country are badly underfunded by central government, who seem content to pass the responsibility for increasing amounts of services onto local authorities without the money to pay for them, and to blame councils for increasing council taxes to balance the books." Cllr Boulton added: "We will have to prioritise, and that’s why we want to talk to and hear from residents during the consultations to come, about how they want us to act on their behalf." Arguments about who is to blame for the proposed charges boiled over when the draft budget was approved, on

October 5. The Lib Dem-Labour coalition says the budget approved in February, before control of the authority changed hands at May’s local elections, included £7m of “income generating targets” for next year, with up to £2m from parking charges. Opposition Conservatives accused the coalition of “spreading deliberate mistruths” by pinning the proposed fees on the former Tory administration. Tory group leader Cllr Sam Bromiley said: “I can categorically state on the record now that the budget approved by council in February did not seek to introduce car parking charges in South Gloucestershire. “The budget contained a review of some potential income generating schemes with the aim of identifying other opportunities to raise income, but when parking charges were raised during the resource allocation process, we Conservatives when in administration chose to remove it. “To paint us as the architects of parking charges is incredibly dishonest.” However Cllr Young insisted: “Officers have assured us that the income generation targets assume the inclusion of parking charges.” Cabinet member for planning, regeneration and infrastructure Lib Dem Cllr Chris Willmore said if the Tories had a way of raising money without parking charges, she was "all ears". By Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Your chance to share your views SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has launched a total of four consultations where it is asking residents their views on cuts or charges. The main budget consultation runs until December 8 and asks people their views on introducing car parking charges, bringing in a £10 charge for blue badges for disabled drivers and increasing charges relating to burials and house purchases. Cuts to the Council Tax Reduction Scheme, a discount for low-income households, are also being proposed. The consultation also includes questions on whether some services should be stopped, more services transferred to

parish councils and community groups and whether council working practices should be changed. People are also asked their preferred level of council tax rise for next year, from a freeze to a 4.99% rise - the maximum allowed - and which areas the council should prioritise to tackle inequality. A household waste consultation asks people whether they would be prepared to have their black bins collected every three or four weeks and what effect this change would have on them. It runs until January 7. A library savings consultation asks people where their local library is, how often

they use it, which services they use and whether staffed opening hours or the budget for books should be cut, along with ideas for "other ways we could save money from within our library services". It runs until January 10. A late night street lighting consultation, also running until January 10, asks people if they would support dimming the district's street lights by varying amounts in the middle of the night and whether some areas should be prioritised for brighter lighting at the expense of others. All of the consultations are on the consultations page of the council's website, consultations.southglos.gov.uk/consult.ti.

Tackling 'poverty premium' Flower power! THE poorest tenants in South Gloucestershire could be automatically put onto the cheapest energy tariffs after the council passed a motion to fight the “poverty premium”. Councillors voted in favour of proposals to stop residents on the lowest incomes being forced to pay more for essential services such as bills, loans, insurance and cash machines. The Lib Dem motion was backed by Labour while Conservatives abstained, saying they supported it in principle but that it lacked details, such as the cost and officer time required. A council meeting was told one in five low-income households in the district had to fork out an average of £400 more a year – collectively nearly £9m – than their more affluent neighbours via expensive pre-paid meters, more expensive credit and a lack of freeto-use cash machines, known as the "poverty premium". Cllr Claire Young said: “We cannot stand idle while a significant portion of our community is unfairly burdened with extra costs.” Cabinet member for cost of living, equalities and public health Cllr Alison Evans said people without access to a car were more likely to shop at corner shops than cheaper supermarkets - and also bought a higher proportion of cheaper processed food, leading to "unhealthy children and unhealthy families". The motion called on the government to address the additional costs for the poorest residents urgently, and committed the council to take local action, including working with social and private landlords to ensure every tenant is placed automatically onto the cheapest suitable energy tariff. Conservative Cllr Ben Burton said the rushed nature of themotion could inadvertently harm vital services for the most vulnerable. By Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Decluttering does wonders for mental health PHYSICAL environments influence emotions, cognition, and behaviors. Cluttered environments can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, depressing and stressful. They can cause friction between household members and create feelings of not being in control. Clutter causes negativity. If your hallway has become a dumping ground, every time you come into your home it will feel negative rather than positive. If the clutter continues into the kitchen these negative feelings continue, and so on and so forth. I have been running the declutter service for over 10 years and thankfully have seen many positive changes in recycling. It is a great resource, and if an item can be recycled it is far easier to let it go. There is no harm in asking for help and people find that once they’ve tackled their clutter, they feel that a weight has been lifted, their mood improves and they enjoy a sense of freedom. Reorganising and decluttering and your home is not about making a ‘show home’. It is about managing your belongings and making your home an inviting, pleasurable place to live in and somewhere to feel proud of. Whether you have hoarding tendencies or are just fed up with general mess and clutter, help is at hand to get you motivated. FM DeClutter Services provide a friendly tailor made service that works with you, at your pace, with empathy and understanding.

Bedsits plan for church A FORMER church will be turned into bedsits if a new plan is approved. Soundwell Spiritualist Church, in Soundwell Road, was put up for sale after closing its doors for good last year. Developer Mark Bodey, of Kore Property Holdings in Hanham, has applied for planning permission to convert the church into an eight-bed house in multiple occupation (HMO). But neighbours have raised concerns that plans include no parking for residents, only eight cycle spaces. Agents R & J Consultants said the developer also owned land behind the church, which already has planning permission for two semi-detached bungalows. The agents say the HMO plans include two full-size bathrooms, a cloakroom and "suitably-sized communal living, dining and kitchen at the rear",

with a private patio and garden. Three of the proposed bedrooms are on the ground floor with the other five on the first floor. The plans involve retaining the facade, using the existing church windows facing Soundwell Road for both ground and first floor bedrooms, and building a first-floor extension at the back in place of a pitched roof. The agents say the developer wants to install roof-mounted solar panels and replace the gas boiler with two air source heat pumps. But neighbours have raised concerns over the lack of on-site parking. One person living in nearby Leicester Square said: "Eight bedrooms means a likelihood of eight people/cars, which really equates to a possible 16 cars, with no parking for any." The resident said land at

Soundwell Spiritualist Church could become a house in multiple occupation the rear and side of the church could be used for parking some cars, and already has an access driveway. She added: "I just worry that our already busy road will be used as a car park for these new residents." Another neighbour said it was "unacceptable" not to include any parking in the plans, adding: "It's a lovely building and I'm

glad to see someone wants to do something with it. "But parking in the side streets is already beyond manageable. "No provision for parking is a joke." The plans can be seen on the planning section of South Gloucestershire Council's website, by searching for application P23/02858/F.

Singing for green dream CHILDREN from Parkwall Primary School in Cadbury Heath are playing an active role in a project to boost long-term nature recovery. The school is part of Common Connections, a four-year scheme to create a wildlife corridor from Willsbridge to Lyde Green. The aim is to restore, improve and connect green spaces to help tackle the climate and nature emergency by restoring lost habitats. Already the project has involved planting nearly 1,000 small hedge plants for new hedgerows, more than 2,200 wildflower plugs creating meadow areas for pollinators, and planting more than 250 shrubs. Now, South Gloucestershire Council is starting a second community nature reserve

scheme for families in and around Willsbridge Mill, near Bitton, to make their gardens more wildlife friendly. Residents can get involved by growing more grass, trees and shrubs. This was launched by Parkwall pupils, who followed a nature trail from the school to Willsbridge Mill, where they performed an original

song ‘The Wildlife Show’. The children also designed masks and helped create colourful placards to remind them about the importance of protecting habitats for local wildlife. They were joined by Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Councillor Mike Drew. He said: “It was fantastic to see the young people’s creativity,

passion and enthusiasm for helping to protect our natural habitats here in South Gloucestershire. The project is funded by £125,000 from the council’s climate action plan budget along with £998,973 sourced from the West of England Combined Authority and £135,000 in grants.

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

It’s time to switch back to public transport HAVE you caught a bus recently? Perhaps atrain? Or maybe got on a bike? If not, please do give them a try. If just some of our car journeys were instead made by bus, train, WESTlink minibuses, e-scooters or the new WESTbikes then, despite what some would have us believe, it could help deal with the climate emergency, reduce pollution and boost our health to reduce the burden on the NHS, and cut congestion to aid our economy. Post pandemic, our travel habits have changed. Our trains had a 50-50 commuting to leisure split - now it’s only a third of passengers who are commuters. On buses, most passengers are now back, but they are travelling less often. Luckily there is no shortage of potential passengers out there, with one in nine regional commutes currently made by public transport. So if you can, do consider switching.

This is the main reason for Birthday Buses. For those of you who don’t know about Birthday Buses, it’s a simple idea. Throughout the whole month of your birthday, you get unlimited free bus travel. You can apply at www. birthdaybus.co.uk/register. The whole point of Birthday Buses is to encourage people to try the bus - and then stick with it to bring in more fares to invest in better local transport. So far, 52% of people who have used Birthday Buses say it has made them more likely to use public transport in the future. Of course, the proof is really if people keep using buses long term - but scientists tell us that a month is the minimum duration to create lasting behaviour change. So far, the early signs are positive. Once we’ve got new passengers, that cuts carbon and pollution

(helping reduce the shocking 300 premature deaths locally every year from poor air quality), and cuts congestion (which costs our regional economy £300 million a year). It also brings in vital cash, for buses don’t run on kindness and fresh air. They cost money. Increasingly more money, as fuel costs have soared, and bus driver wages increased. The only way to have a growing and sustainable bus network in the future is to bring in more fare income. That’s especially the case for the buses that are subsidised by you, the hard-pressed taxpayer, through your council tax. Every extra passenger helps reduce the pressure to spend taxpayer money on bus subsidies. We have to try new things. Just throwing taxpayers’ money at subsidising buses forever doesn’t work. You spend it. It runs out. Instead, I’m determined we do things differently here. Whether it’s

That’s why I’m driving through changes. So please give our public transport a go, to help create lasting improvements.

n AROUND THE WIs LONGWELL GREEN WI THE nights are drawing in, autumn seems to have arrived and some of the leaves have started to turn to their lovely colours. At our October meeting we enjoyed an interesting and informative talk from Lottie Dale on “Falling with Style - Skydiving” She told us that her father flew in WW2 and the stories he told her gave her an interest in flying. It was not common for women to be pilots when she would have trained so she trained to be a nurse. The flying interest was still there so she decided to do a parachute jump and she became hooked. Lottie then trained in her spare time to do freefall jumps. She told us many stories of the jumps she did leading to various medals and records. Over 17 years Lottie did over 1200 jumps. A fascinating talk which everyone enjoyed. The Family and Friends Walking Group enjoyed a short mid-week break in The Quantocks finding lots of new, interesting places to explore. Members are looking forward to a trip to Warwick Castle to see the rooms dressed for Christmas and also a craft fair. We are also planning another Craft Day for members to try some new skills. We have lots of groups that our members can participate in. There are book clubs, walking groups, knitting group, skittles and social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month, we meet at The Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI regular meetings are on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome.

If you are interested in visiting please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com, telephone 0117 9864782 or come along on the meeting evening. Linda Muller HANHAM EVENING WI SPOILER alert…Spoiler alert…. And the murderer was…. Well perhaps we shouldn’t tell you who committed the foul deed just in case you might want to see this excellent “Who Done It” production for yourselves. So, you’ve guessed, October saw us entertained by a group of Murder Mystery actors, aptly named The Red Herrings, when they brought us their adaptation of "Coffee - Grounds for Suspicion". The evening was like a real-life game of Cluedo where cast members took to the floor to talk about their relationship with the deceased and giving their version of events. Picture the scene as we were transported back to 1992 when the crime took place. We were watching the memorial service for a well-known coffee magnate, Vidal Bean, who had founded none other than the famous Bean Trading Company. I'll say no more ........... We were then invited to solve the crime. Why was he killed – was it jealousy, greed or wrong place wrong time. Who committed the dirty deed and how – was it Colonel Mustard in the library with the lead piping – perhaps not but no doubt you get my meaning. Eventually all was revealed and the killer was unmasked. Despite numerous red herrings leading us down one blind alley after another several of our members claimed to have solved the crime. Two

members were awarded certificates for getting everything right but whether that was by luck or good judgement is another mystery we’ll never solve – eat your heart out Columbo. Earlier that evening, before the murder was committed, our birthday celebrations got under way as we enjoyed a delicious buffet supper provided by Ivy’s Café of Hanham and a drink before settling down to watch a murder unfold. We are now looking forward to our ever-popular annual Autumn Fayre which is being held at the Hanham Community Centre on Saturday 11th November from 10.00am until 1.00pm. There will be 28 tables, all of which are now sold, offering a wide variety of goods for sale. These include Christmas gifts, craft items, art work, greetings cards, jewellery, children and baby items, bric-a-brac, books and of course traditional homemade WI cake. Our speciality bacon rolls will again be on sale as well as other hot and cold refreshments. There will be a grand raffle with superb hampers as prizes so why not come along to browse and brunch and perhaps pick up a bargain or two. Entry is free and there is ample free parking – so why not come along and see us, even if it is just for a coffee and a chat with friends. Everyone is welcome. Dianna Coles AVON FEDERATION FEDERATION Chairman, Sue Murphy, opened the annual meeting at Bawa, Filton. The first speaker was Hannah Jones, a Southmead Hospital

Charity Community Support Officer. Next, we heard from Mike Smalley who works for Somerset County Council as a safe driving adviser. Their work covers the Avon and Somerset Police area, and they are happy to give talks to groups in that area on safe driving issues, e.g. driving as we get older, driving for people with mobility issues, advanced driving courses and accreditation. To complete the morning session, we heard from Ann Jones, the Chairman of NFWI (National Federation of Women’s Institutes). Ann gave a very interesting talk about her life and her family, plus her role as Chairman of the top tier of WI. Ann is married to a hill sheep farmer in Ceredigion, Wales, and joined the WI as a twenty five year old newly-wed in order to please her mother-in-law! Following the lunch break, there was the announcement of WIs who were receiving certificates from NFWI for milestone birthdays, and presentation of the Chairman’s Rose Bowl, given to a nominated member for helping others/work in the community etc. This year’s winner was Christine Brooks of Chipping Sodbury WI. We then heard from our final speaker of the day – Emma Britton, former Radio Bristol breakfast show host and now a celebrant. In the coming months AFWI are putting on the following events:a coach trip to the Birmingham Markets, and a Flowers, Craft & Coffee day in November; Carol Service, and John Lewis Shopping experience in December. Sharing is caring

CHILDREN and families from Christchurch preschool in Hanham have been collecting food and toiletries to donate to the food bank in Kingswood. They brought their donations to the local church, Christchurch, Hanham and St George, Hanham Abbots on Church Road after the children had been talking about harvest, sharing and thinking of those who are not so fortunate. A preschool spokesperson said: "We are very grateful for all the support and donations."

Cruising crackdown NEW police powers to stop “car cruising” in South Gloucestershire are being proposed. The council is consulting on a new public spaces protection order (PSPO) for the whole district which would ban any gathering of cars and spectators in car parks and other public places “ in order to race, perform stunts or show off their vehicles”. The council said: “Car cruises often result in reports of anti-social behaviour from residents and local businesses who are affected as well as impacting on other road users. In addition, these often spontaneous events place a significant demand on policing resources, local private security staff and in some cases council resources.” The authority has launched a consultation for people to have their say on the proposed ban - it can be found online at tinyurl. com/3dthtfah and closes on January 1.

Judith Pinkett gave a comical set of anecdotes about the research process, that amused her peers and added some further jollity to the occasion. David James concluded thoughtfully, with reflection on their school days and memories from the 60s/70s, taking time to think of those in remembrance, who had passed away. He poignantly quoted Terry Pratchett with "They are not dead whilst their name is still spoken … I will speak their name." He then read their names so that they were remembered and could still be part of the occasion. David`s speech concluded, with a lighter tone to enjoy the day and a surprise song by Derek Northam that pulled the room together in chorus, concluding the formalities and uniting the group. Celebrating age

PEOPLE in Hanham and Longwell Green are being urged to join a group helping older people to 'learn, laugh and live'. The volunteer-run u3a University of the Third Age - held an event in Page Park that featured Tai Chi, a daytime disco, open day and informal social event as part of the Bristol Celebrating Age Festival, which was supported by charity Age UK and the Friends of Page Park. u3a aims to provide opportunities for people who are no longer in full-time employment or raising a family to learn new things, take part in activities and pursue interests. October's event was run by Lindsay Gough, one of Bristol u3a's trustees, who lives in Emersons Green. Lindsay said: "I’m a fit and active 67-year-old and have noticed that there’s very little around that targets people like me. Bristol u3a fills that gap brilliantly, as our interpretation

of 'lifelong learning' is as broad as it can possibly be. "It costs just £20 a year to become a member and once you’ve paid that, you are not charged any more money to participate in activities. "We have over 150 diverse interest groups running across Bristol which include physical activities, discussion groups, academic subjects and social groups." Bristol u3a has more than 1,400 members, around 250 of them in East and North-East Bristol. Groups range from cycling, motorcycling, walking and table tennis to film, book, rock'n'roll and art appreciation. Anyone who would like to find out more about u3a can email learnlaughlive@bristolu3a.org. uk for more information. The group also has a website at u3asites.org.uk/bristol/home, which includes details of all the groups currently running.

His painting of Basil Rogers, the last minister of the Tabernacle, was relayed to a live crowd of dozensat the New Cheltenham Community Centre. Among the audience watching the painting develop via a giant TV screen was Metro Mayor Dan Norris. The Trust hopes to display the artwork in the revamped Tabernacle once restoration works are completed next year. Kingswood should be proud of what it’s done, but must focus on what it can be for future."

Milestone event for Children of the 90s HUNDREDS of Children of the 90s participants from across Bristol visited the M Shed to learn directly from the researchers behind the renowned study. The Discovery Day event in October, which marked the study moving into its fourth decade, welcomed three generations to share study findings and hear from participants about their experiences of taking part and what it means to them. The study, based within the University of Bristol, began in 1991 ands its research findings have made an impact woprldwide. An early example was when, following a rise in cot deaths in the UK, Children of the 90s researched baby sleeping positions. The findings led to the government launching the ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign which, to date, has prevented an estimated 10,000+ deaths in the UK and 100,000+ around the globe. More recently, Children of the 90s data fed directly into government policy for Covid-19, and helped researchers to understand the prevalence of the disease, including asymptomatic cases, immunity, its effects on physical and mental health, and its long-term impact. The study, now in its 33rd year, is currently researching topics from childhood eating patterns to fatty liver disease and from mental health to the menopause. Speaker Professor Anna Murray, from the University of Exeter, presented her findings on ‘Menopause and your genes’ and discussed how Children of the 90s data is helping her to learn more about the role of our genes in controlling the timing of menopause. Children of the 90s is now looking for participants to come forward for their @30 clinic. So far over 7,000 participants have attended for a three-hour visit (including parents, children and partners). Why should I get Covid and flu jabs again this winter? THE NHS flu and Covid vaccination this autumn is offered free of charge to pregnant women, frontline health and social care workers, including those working in nursing homes and family members as well as neighbours who have unpaid caring responsibilities to the vulnerable. This group of people, including everyone with a learning disability, with a chronic respiratory disease like asthma, diagnosed with diabetes and household contacts of immunocompromised individuals, sometimes choose not to have their jabs or do not even know they are eligible.

symptoms that come on very quickly. We know that over 10,000 people die yearly from Flu, with hospitalisations also increasing pressure on the NHS over the winter. As I am well and fit, never getting any symptoms, why do I need it? Not everyone who has Flu or Covid will experience symptoms. The saliva and nasal droplets from coughing and sneezing spread the infection as people breathe and then in or touch surfaces. This means you are also putting other vulnerable people at risk.

The flu is just a cold, right?

Why do pregnant women need to be vaccinated and is it safe?

Flu isn’t just a heavy cold. It’s a highly infectious disease with

Flu infection increases the chances of pregnant women and

their babies needing intensive care. All pregnant women should have a flu vaccine to protect themselves and their babies. Flu vaccine can be given safely at any stage of pregnancy, from conception onwards. It reduces the risk of the baby being stillborn or premature while also passing on immunity to flu to the newborn baby. Why do I need a new flu or Covid-19 vaccine this autumn? If you had the flu vaccination last year, you need another one this year. Why? Flu viruses can change, so the vaccines are updated each winter to give protection against the strains of flu that are most likely to be going around. Just like we are now doing with the Covid-19 vaccine, offering you the updated one that protects against

n NEWS n STAFF, students, and Friends of King’s Oak Academy took physical challenges to raise money towards a school minibus The King’s Oak Academy Active Challenge week saw staff and students take to an exercise bike to complete the equivalent of the 837mile Land’s End to John O’Groats route, before hitting a rowing machine to complete the 220-mile length of the River Severn. They also used a treadmill to cover the 71 miles they would have to travel to visit all sister schools within the Cabot Learning Federation. By hitting the 1,250-mile total, the King’s Oak team raised an amazing £1,890 – nearly double their original £1,000 target. After school on Friday, the Friends of King’s Oak offered students the chance to take part in more fundraising activities. This has now been added to other fundraising efforts – and support from local businesses, including Pam James Consultancy which donated £1,000 – to enable the school to order a new minibus.

Shipshape and Kingswood fashion THE Royal Navy and Royal Marines outreach team visited King’s Oak Academy to work with pupils and students on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities. This week-long project saw 350 students from the Kingswood school’s Years 6, 7 and 8 spending time with the Navy and Marines, who sent four different personnel each day. Students were given numerous tasks throughout the week that included building telecoms structures out of giant Lego and designing, creating and launching rockets made out of classroom materials. Pupils also had the chance for a Q&A session with the team, where they also heard about the humanitarian work the Navy and Marines carry out across the world. Chris Nathan, Head of Year 7 and organiser of the visit, said: “It has been brilliant seeing our students complete a wide range of STEM challenges and explore potential career pathways for the future. ”

Out with the old ... THE eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed some changes to our company in the last few months, and I can’t quite believe how quickly this year has gone and that I haven’t mentioned anything in this colum ... until now! In short – we have changed our name. ‘East Bristol Auctions Ltd’ is a thing of the past and we are now called ‘Auctioneum Ltd.’ Why? Well – back in May we opened our second auction saleroom on the outskirts of Bath. ‘East Bristol Auctions’ was simply no longer geographically accurate. Various ideas for new names were suggested and pondered, but in the end ‘Auctioneum’ won. It’s a (very slightly) tweaked version of the Latin word for ‘Auction’ and not a portmanteau of ‘Auction’ and ‘Museum’ as many have asked. We’re still the same company, with the same incredible team – we simply have an additional saleroom based in Bath. Those of you familiar with our premises on Memorial Road will soon be seeing the new signage appearing. Since opening in 2012 our auction rooms have grown and grown, both in the number of sales we offer and also in physical size. Our new saleroom in Bath gives us more space as well as the ability to serve a wider area. Our Bristol saleroom is not going anywhere, we are proudly Bristolian, and that will never change! Our new premises is an expansion, and not a move. We could never do what we do without you – the local community – so I’d like to take the opportunity to say a big ‘thank you!’ Not only for bringing us your items to sell, but for turning up on auction days, coming to our valuation events, charity evenings etc. We really couldn’t do what we do without YOU and we remain eternally grateful. If you ever find yourself on the Box Road, in Bathford, pop into our new saleroom and say ‘Hello!’ Andy Stowe Auctioneum Ltd

Janet and Brian Billington at The Nylon Shop, Two Mile Hill

Finally! Sale now on at The Nylon Shop A KINGSWOOD shop is holding the first sale in its 65-year history. The Nylon Shop on Two Mile Hill has made the move to clear some of its treasure trove of fabrics as owners Brian and Janet Billington prepare for retirement. The couple plan to shut the shop, which was founded by Brian’s mother Joan, in the next ten to 12 months. They took the decision following the recent death from cancer of their dear friend and colleague Alan Stenning, who had worked in the shop for more than 20 years. Since they announced their plans, Janet and Brian have had a flood of messages from customers. “People have been very kind. They are sad that we are retiring but they understand our reasons. Meanwhile, they are all getting discounts!” Janet said The shop draws generations of customers from a wide area – one even travels from the Isle of Wight – in search of

dressmaking and furnishing fabrics and upholstery foam. The original Nylon Dress Shop was opened by Joan Billington in 1958 in Grosvenor Road, St Paul’s. Having been widowed with young children, she had started to earn money as a dressmaker and found a niche making net and nylon dresses for West Indian women and children, who had come over on the Windrush, to wear to church. Kingswood shop was Joan’s second shop. She closed the St Paul’s one in 1980 after the riots and opened another in Bedminster, continuing to work into her 80s. Janet has worked alongside Brian at Two Mile Hill for almost 40 years.

Last chance to see crib scenes

n TEACHING assistant Jack Ball has won a national award. Jack, who works at New Horizons Learning Centre in Kingswood, received the HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) Special School category glass trophy, certificate and voucher at a ceremony on Teaching Assistants Day. The awards were founded by education recruitment agency Teaching Personnel in collaboration with Bristol-based professional development provider Best Practice Network.

A KINGSWOOD woman who holds a display of nativity scenes every year has said this year will be the final exhibition. Jackie has a collection of 450 nativities from all over the world and puts them on show every December at St Michael the Archangel church, Two Mile Hill. “They range in size from minuscule to about four feet tall and are made of a huge range of materials including wood, coal, glass, paper, cork, china, fur - to name but a few. They look beautiful in the church setting, with candles and music,” she said. Jackie started exhibiting in 2004 to raise money for a cancer support group she runs called GOSH (Bristol), which stands for Gastro Oesophageal Support and Help run. She continued after her husband John, who had oesophageal cancer, died in 2008. Last year Jackie was ill herself and was unable to open the exhibition, so has now decided this year will be the last, though she will continue with the GOSH group, which meets every two months at the Park Centre. The nativities, some of which are now for sale, will be on show on Dec 2-3, 9-10, and 16-17, 10am-5pm Saturdays and 10.30am-5pm Sundays.

£70 million 'clean fuel' centre opens A NEW "green propulsion research centre" has officially opened on the Bristol and Bath Science Park in Emersons Green. The Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems, or IAAPS, aims to develop clean, sustainable and affordable technology to develop future ultra-low emission vehicles. Community learning 'key to bright future'

INSPIRATIONAL adult learners from South Gloucestershire have been celebrated at an event to recognise their perseverance and growth in confidence. The annual celebration was for residents who have taken part in the council’s Community Learning and Skills Service, which received a Good rating from Ofsted in July this year, and offers courses and career progression programmes. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the commitment and success of participants who have achieved so much over the last year. Councillor Ian Boulton, CoLeader of the council, welcomed over 100 learners and their families to the event at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. Cllr Boulton said: “Community Learning can provide a real lifeline for those who take part. I know from personal experience that accessing learning opportunities as an adult opens possibilities that would otherwise have been

closed to me. “I congratulate all the learners on their inspiring achievements and journeys: overcoming adversity, learning new skills, taking up new opportunities, developing resilience and growing in confidence through raised

preparing for employment; programmes for speakers of English as a second language; English, maths and a wide range of other topics. The service has also supported a further 850 people with information, advice and guidance through its employability programmes.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Together we can reduce hate crime I WANT to start by acknowledging the terrible crisis and conflict situation in the Middle East. I strongly condemn any acts of terrorism. I recognise that there will be communities in Avon and Somerset who feel concerned and have been impacted by these events. I want to reassure you that the Chief Constable is ensuring that Avon & Somerset Police is actively engaging with all communities affected, and other agencies, to monitor the situation. Every month I hold a performance and accountability board meeting, to hold the Chief Constable of Avon & Somerset Police to account in delivering policing that is efficient, effective and legitimate, by scrutinising and asking questions about police performance and priorities. October’s topics were hate crime, anti-social behaviour and PEEL disclosure schemes.

Hate crime and ASB is unacceptable any time of year, but National Hate Crime Week, which took place between October 14 and 21, provided an opportunity to reinforce that Avon and Somerset is no place for hate. Reducing and preventing these crimes, which is priority one of four in my Police and Crime Plan, requires us to all work together, encourage reporting and ensure any victims receive support. Together we can reduce hate crime. Chief Constable Sarah Crew assured me that Avon and Somerset Police will be doing ongoing engagement with schools, communities and retailers to encourage and support the reporting of hate crime. If you are a victim or see hate crime or ASB take place, I would urge you to report it online or via 101. I also questioned the Chief

TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN

Constable about the latest PEEL report. PEEL stands for Police Effectiveness, Efficiency and Legitimacy, and is the primary framework in which police forces are inspected. The most recent report found that an area identified for improvement is the need to reduce the backlog of applications waiting to be processed relating to domestic violence disclosure schemes. The two schemes are fantastic police policies, which enable you to find out about an individual’s domestic abuse history (if they have one) or if someone has a record for child sex offences. If you missed the meeting and want to see what happened, you can watch the recording via the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Facebook page. I want to take the opportunity to talk specifically about road safety, which is a key area of focus. If you are a road user, pedestrian

or cyclist or e-scooter rider, I urge you to be careful when using pathways and pavements. It is important to remember that pavements are solely for the use of pedestrians. If you do need to use the pavement to park, please do so with care, especially as the evenings become darker. This ensures accessibility and safety for all road users and pedestrians in Avon and Somerset.
