How you can help to avoid local lockdown PEOPLE in Hanham and Longwell Green are being urged to follow the "Hands, Space, Face" guidance to avoid the need for a local lockdown. The plea from Sara Blackmore, director of public health in South Gloucestershire, and council leader Toby Savage comes as cases of Covid-19 continue to rise across the district. As the Voice went to print, 42 new cases had been confirmed in a week, bringing the total for South Gloucestershire to 1001. Ms Blackmore said: "Wash your hands. Cover your face. Remember social distancing and follow the national guidance on self-isolation. "By working together and doing the right thing we are protecting others.” Mr Savage added: "Our numbers are relatively low right now, but any case is a cause for concern, and we must not be complacent. "We have shown ourselves to be at our best when we work together as we have done for the past six months" Report: Page 2

Covid-19: Don't be complacent PEOPLE in Hanham and Longwell Green have been urged to play gheir part in helping to reduce the spread of Covid-19. Cases in the area remain low - two or fewer confirmed in the week to September 23 - but council and health officials say numbers fluctuate and people cannot afford to be complacent. The total number of positive Covid-19 cases in South Gloucestershire had just topped 1,000 as the Voice went to print, with 41 in the week to September 28. South Gloucestershire Council’s director of public health, Sara Blackmore, and leader, Councillor Toby Savage, are calling on everyone to be vigilant and help avoid a local lockdown. Ms Blackmore said: “The past six months have been challenging for everyone and the next few months will be crucial in keeping the spread of the virus to a minimum in South Gloucestershire. “As individuals, our actions can help reduce the spread of the virus to people who are otherwise young and healthy, as

well as to those who are more vulnerable and who can be badly affected. “The way to stop that from happening; to keep everyone safe, is to follow the guidance: Hands, Face, Space." Councillor Savage said: “Currently, the infection rate here is relatively low compared to some parts of the country. “Any case is a cause for concern, and we must not be complacent. Any case can affect a whole family - a child unable to go to school, a parent who can’t go to work, an elderly relative who needs extra care. It can also affect others in the community." Parents have been urged to continue sending children to schools where no cases of the virus are confirmed or suspected. Schools have plans in place for continuing to provide learning for classes and year groups who are told to selfisolate. The first in the district to send pupils home was Kings’ Forest in Kingswood, where 28 children had to isolate after a child in Year 1 tested positive.

'Naomi is always thinking of others. We're so proud of her' A GIRL from Hanham has raised more than £1,000 for a charity close to her heart by having a haircut. Naomi Spencer, 12, wanted to give back to Brain Tumour Support, a charity supporting patients, families, friends and carers, after her dad Paul was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She shed 21 inches of her flowing locks and donated her the hair to The Little Princess Trust to be made into a wig for a child that has lost theirs through treatment for cancer. Mum Tina told the Voice her husband became ill in 2015 and was told he had anxiety. He’d starting walking into objects like lampposts and began forgetting things, so went to the opticians, who referred him to the eye hospital. An MRI in May 2016 led to diagnosis of brain tumour. He also lost his job. It was a hard time for Tina and the children, Naomi and younger brother Josiah. Paul started deteriorating and an

Naomi shed her long hair to be made into a wig for a cancer patient operation in September 2016 They found a benign tumour wrapped around his pituitary gland, which was putting pressure on his optic nerve. Surgeons removed part of the tumour but complications meant Paul ended up in ICU with meningitis, which took his eyesight in his left eye and caused a dark spot in the right. "Paul stayed in hospital for

two months and then spent two months in a rehab unit where he re-learnt balance and coordination. In January 2017 he then started radiotherapy for six weeks and began slowly improving, but at Easter my Mum was also diagnosed with breast cancer.” Tina added: “Brain Tumour Support has been a huge support to us as a family. We attend

their monthly meetings, and we can also access therapy for the children too. Following the support we have received and after seeing her grandma lose her hair to chemo, in 2017 Naomi decided to grow her hair and donate it so a wig could be made. “She has been such a star throughout everything and has coped so well. So far she has raised over £1100 which is amazing. She is always thinking of others and she’s got a good heart – we’re so proud of her. “ Naomi said: ““I feel very surprised at how much I have raised and feel very happy that the money can help other families going through the same thing. My family are proud of me and they love my new hair cut too!” Paul is awaiting surgery on cysts in his brain that have affected his remaining sight, but Tina says he is in a much better place than he was. www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Tina-Spencer5

Wonder of water births at ‘hospital more like a hotel’

A FAMILY has welcomed the arrival of their fourth baby at Cossham Birth Centre in Kingswood. Kelly and Steve Watson’s fourth son, Reggie, was born in August weighing 7lb 2oz. Kelly and Steve are full of praise for the midwives who have helped them over the past seven years. Their first child, Jax, was born in September 2013 after the opening of the midwife-led unit, run by North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT). He was followed by Harley in July 2015 and Logan in December 2017. All four children arrived via water birth, and Kelly said she chose Cossham because of the relaxed atmosphere. “I wanted to avoid an epidural and liked the idea of a water birth,” she said. “Cossham feels more like a hotel than a hospital and I liked that my husband could stay overnight. “The midwives were brilliant at all four births. They made me feel relaxed and couldn't have done any more for me.” “I was definitely going back,

Kelly and Steve Watson with water babies Reggie, Jax, Harley and Logan it’s so lovely. I recommend it to all my friends who have babies.” Cossham Birth Centre is suitable for healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies. 2,466 babies have been born since it opened its doors in 2013. If complications arise during labour, mother and child will be transferred by ambulance to

24 HOUR LOCKSMITH & DOUBLE GLAZING REPAIRS

Southmead Hospital, which has emergency facilities. NBT says women giving birth at Cossham can now expect a named midwife throughout all stages of pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. They will be seen by a team of up to eight midwives, including their named midwife and have a point of

contact 24 hours a day all week. There is also a continuity of care team at Southmead Health Centre and at Cadbury Heath Healthcare. The specialist Cedar team for women who need extra support is being developed, with more teams being rolled out across NBT maternity services. Cossham senior midwife, Victoria Fallows, said: “It is so lovely that the Watsons have had all four of their babies at Cossham since we opened. It’s wonderful that Kelly has had such a great experience with her births here and is recommending us to her friends.” For more information about Continuity of Care visit www.nbt.nhs.uk/ news-media/latest-news/ nbt-now-providing-women-anamed-midwife-throughouttheir-pregnancy-journey

Inspiring butterfly emerges at last AN ART teacher from Hanham Woods Academy has designed a mural that aims to inspire hope in Stokes Croft. Emma Holloway is also known by her artist name Urban Butterfly. The community project was commissioned in summer 2019 and is aiming to be one of city’s biggest murals this year. The first half of the artwork was completed in 2019, but painting the second half was delayed by Covid-19 restrictions. Around 20 people from all backgrounds and ages supported Emma during the final half of painting at the end of August, and the mural was completed on the 30 foot side of the E5 Church on Jamaica Street. Using the journey of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly, the mural is designed to be a celebration of both diversity and transformation.

Emma told the Voice: “Colour, beauty and art have a direct influence on one’s wellbeing and ability to dream. Children especially need to be around this to visualise a different future. My hope is that this mural inspires all who look at it, including my students, to remember that they’re deeply valuable and unique (like gemstones) and in the words of best selling illustrator Charlie Mackesy, have something to ‘bring to this world....(that) no one else can’. That they have the potential to personally transform, even against all the odds, becoming their best selves and bring positive transformation wherever they are (the butterfly). “Education, childhood, home and the classroom are a significant part of the chrysalis experience, they form and shape

us. The challenge for teachers is creating a culture in our classrooms that inspires hope, expectancy, positive ambition and allows children the freedom to become all they can be. “I guess I’m trying to model

it by doing it, I am learning as much as they are and we are slowly transforming the art room, department and school through murals and excellent examples into an inspirational place to dream”.

Young poets have winning way with words OLIVIA Brown, 13, from Hanham Woods Academy, has seen a poem she wrote during lockdown published as part of a creative writing competition. Olivia , who lives in Hanham, took part in the Worlds From Home' competition run by publishers March Hamilton during May. It offered children aged 8 – 16 the chance to be featured in a book of lockdown writers. They had to submit a story or poem of no more than 500 words on any topic, and over 100 entries were received. Her mum Katie said: “Olivia’s poem was called ‘Save The World’, and it focused on endangered animals, recycling, and the impact that the coronavirus is having. I’m really proud of her, and think the competition was a good thing for the publishing company to do as a way to get children to do something different to homework while they were

learning at home.” Olivia added: “I wanted to enter the competition as I enjoy writing and I thought if I won I would be raising awareness for all the different things happening in the world at the moment. I was inspired by the current issues and problems in the world, and I was so pleased to be chosen as one of the winners in the book.”

CONNIE Seymour, a student at IKB Academy in Keynsham, is to become a published poet. Connie, from Cadbury Heath, has had her work chosen for a book showcasing young adults’ work, called Through Their Eyes 2020 – Teen Spirit. Her poem, Am I Worth the Pain, about social media, written when she was 14, was selected from more than 10,000 entries in the 29th annual Young Writers competition. The book’s editor Allie Jones said entries were chosen for their imagination and creativity as well as originality and use of language. Connie, who is in Year 11, said: "I'm so happy as I really enjoy writing poems and find it calming and relaxing. I'm looking forward to reading the other poems in the book. "I'd like to thank my English teacher Mrs Bostock for encouraging me to enter as I

Pupils show flare!

Step inside Bristol’s Sixth Form College – virtually!

CHILDREN at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary in Kingswood might have missed out on their summer sports day but they got the opportunity to get back in track last month. All classes took part in The Olympic Host City Project. Children completed many tasks including learning about opening ceremonies and their history, using maths to budget for the development of the athletes' village, making Olympic torches in DT, designing athletic kit from sustainable materials, and in forest school sessions, collecting natural items from the school grounds to create their own Olympic Stadiums. As part of the project, each class had to create a new country and present their pitch as a bid to host the coming OLOL Olympics. They composed and performed their own National Anthem and planned their own opening ceremonies. The project was judged by the Olympic Committee - headteacher Miss McLoughlin, and assessment manager Matt Poulson - and the winning class Year 4 got to preside over the Opening Ceremony for a week of sporting events concluding with a trophy presentation and a Closing Ceremony.

As the summer draws to a close, students and staff at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College are settling in to post-16 life – albeit in a quite different format than in previous years. As the only Sixth Form College in the region, St Brendan’s is a popular choice for learners who are ready to embrace the next step and this year the College welcomed a record number of new enrollers. With over 1000 16-17 year olds enrolling at St Brendan’s this September, it would seem it’s becoming ‘the place to be’ for young adults across Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire and beyond. With state of the art facilities and an impressive choice of A-level and Applied General subjects to choose from, the Brislington-based College is attracting students from far and wide and looks set to continue its growth into the new year. In the midst of the COVID pandemic across the country, St Brendan’s is proud to have been able to adapt its teaching techniques both online and face-to-face. At the same time it is still delivering a huge range of courses which are not available to students elsewhere. Amongst its vast provision of over 60 different subjects, the College provides students with the largest choice of A-level Languages anywhere in the region, and also offers a full choice of Music and Performance courses to post-16 learners; an unusual find in today’s educational landscape. In addition to an ever-growing choice of courses, St Brendan’s also has its sights set firmly on developing its state-of-the-art facilities further, for students to enjoy a first-class education. After their summer break, students returned to College to find new computer suites and a transformed library space including a university-style silent study zone. In true evolutionary style, St Brendan’s Sixth Form College will be holding its first ever Online Open Day for Year 11 students and their families on Saturday 3rd October (10am – 2:30pm) which will include a virtual tour, careers advice and live Q&A sessions with teachers of all subjects. How new locks can unlock a new you A HAIR salon in Kingswood is leading the fight against female hair loss, transforming the lives of clients. Charisma, on the Kingsway, set up a hair loss clinic nearly 2 years ago. Following the fitting of their integrated hair mesh systems, clients are leaving with a newfound confidence, delighted with their dramatic make-over. The hair loss clinic is based on the first floor of the salon allowing customers who may feel embarrassed or upset by their hair loss complete privacy. The intricate work is carried out by Emily Gil, who originally honed her skills at Charisma as a Saturday girl under the leadership of salon owner Becky Rendell. After qualifying as a stylist, Emily wanted to explore aspects of the business so went to work for a national hair loss clinic. She missed the staff and after several years decided she wanted to return to Charisma. Emily said: “I just wanted to come back as I loved the salon and loved working with Becky but I wanted to continue to work with clients with hair loss. I just wanted to make it more affordable for people. “Becky and I met up a few times and we started planning the clinic. It took about a year and a half to plan but now we’re up and running and it’s going really well.” Emily, 27, has seen clients of all ages with very different conditions causing hair loss or thinning. Her eldest client was in her late eighties but her youngest client was just nine years old. She had hair loss due to treatment for leukaemia. “It was very emotional,” says Emily, who lives in St George. “I had a lady who came in before having chemotherapy and I was with her through her whole treatment journey. I’ve seen alopecia, female pattern baldness and trichotillomania, which is where someone pulls their own hair out. “There are a lot of women suffering and I can understand they

Emily Gil might feel embarrassed but we are here to offer support. People are putting their trust in me so I make sure I listen to what they want and take care of them. I want to help every client who walks through my door.” Potential clients are given a one-to-one consultation where Emily talks them through her integrated mesh system which is attached to your scalp, with bonds made with your own hair in order to individually attach 100 per cent human hair extensions. “We have a chat and find out about their condition which is causing the hair loss and how long they’ve had it for. I do tests on the hair and see if it’s growing back. We also discuss what they would like to achieve in terms of thickness and length. I encourage clients to bring in photos of the sort of hair and style they would like to achieve. “If they are happy to proceed we match up hair colours and make a first appointment.” The system means clients can have their hair any thickness, length or colour they desire, with the added bonus that their scalp can breathe under the mesh, enabling their own hair to grow back, should their condition allow it to. Clients can treat the hair as

their own and can wash, blow-dry, straighten and curl it. Emily said: “It’s life-changing. You can tell that because you see how much confidence a person gains after having the system. They can be very timid and worried when they first come in but by the end of it you can see them glowing with confidence. We recently had a lady who came in with general thinning. She was very shy and apprehensive about what was going to happen but by the end, she was crying with joy - she just loved how she looked. She called me that evening and told me I had literally changed her life.” One of her clients is Kingswood resident, 55-year-old Debbie Bush. She had been going to Charisma for years for cuts but, with ever thinning locks, was intrigued by the salon’s integrated mesh system. “I have really thin hair which runs in my family. I’ve done loads of things to it - I’ve dyed it, bleached it and have gone through stress and the menopause so it all took its toll on my hair. I’ve always wanted long, thick hair but have never been able to grow it past a certain length. “I was nervous but excited and I couldn’t believe the result - it looked so natural! It’s given me a lot more confidence. I now bother with myself more and wear make

up because I’ve got nice hair to show off. “I wasn’t embarrassed by my thin hair but it was hard work. I had to wash and blow-dry it every morning just for it to look ok, but now it’s just once a week. “It was a considered purchase but I would say it’s well worth it as it makes me feel so good.” Clients need to return every six to eight weeks to have the system tightened as it becomes slightly looser once their own hair starts growing underneath. Once every six months the system is completely taken off, their hair and scalp washed and any repairs are carried out before the hair is connected back to the mesh. The system should last between two and two and a half years, depending on how it is looked after. Emily said she loves her work and is delighted to be back. “I always wanted to end up back at Charisma but I didn’t know what I wanted to specialise in. It was only when I got into hair loss solutions that I knew what I wanted to do. “You build friendships and personal relationships with clients as you go on a journey with them. “The best feeling in the world is watching their emotion at the end. Children's swim club 'could be sunk' A CHILDREN'S swimming club based at Kingswood Leisure Centre for more than 35 years may be forced to close as the pool operator tries to recoup income lost during lockdown. Aquarians Swimming School runs a weekly 45-minute lesson followed by a 40-minute family swim for parents, relatives and siblings on Sunday afternoons. But chairman Neil Smart said the club's future is in jeopardy as centre operator Circadian Trust wants to run its own lessons. Neil said: “The trust has informed Aquarians that they will be using the Sunday afternoon slot used by Aquarians to run their own swimming lessons in order to generate income as their revenue has dropped as a result of the pool closures due to the Covid-19 situation.” About 60 youngsters aged four to 16 are on the Aquarians'

books with a waiting list of children wanting to join. Members pay £14 a month for both the lessons and family swim, making it cost-effective for families. Circadian charges £25 a month for a weekly lesson and free swimming at other times. The trust, an independent charity, runs five leisure centres across South Gloucestershire, but was forced to close them

between March and July. Neil said: “It is disappointing that Circadian Trust has decided without any consultation not to allow Aquarians to carry on hiring the pools at Kingswood Leisure Centre. As a result of this decision it will no doubt prove very difficult for the children to find anywhere else to go which provides the same level of opportunity to learn how to swim

safely to the best of their ability at a very reasonable cost.” Parents and guardians are writing to their MPs and members of South Gloucestershire Council to express their concern and disappointment that the Aquarians may be forced close if unable to find another venue. Ben Beasley, director of commercial development at Circadian, said: “We have had to make some very difficult decisions to help us secure our facilities for the community in the long term. “We have unfortunately lost customers as we are unable to accommodate them in our own swim lesson programme, which has to take priority over external organisations hiring space. “We are very sorry that we have had to make this decision and hope that the Aquarians find alternative facilities.”

What happens next is up to every one of us (Sir David Attenborough – Extinction – the facts) When I first started writing “Our planet matters” I likened us to unicycles, each taking responsibility for making changes in our lives to reduce the pollution of our planet and our carbon footprints. Unicycles are a bit wobbly on their own so I encouraged us to share & exchange ideas with family, friends & neighbours so that the movement towards a greener future grows and keeps growing. Three unicycles are better than one but seven are better still. If each person that joins a movement finds just 2 others to join, the growth goes something like this. 1:3:7:15:31:63 - see how quickly the numbers grow. More than ever we need people power to act in ways that restore the balance of nature to our sick planet.

Did you watch “Extinction – the facts”? The facts are stark with many species of animals, birds, fish & insects already extinct and many others on the brink. Plastic pollution causing sterility in killer whales and for one specific type of rhino, only 2 females left. “It’s never been more important for us to understand the effects of biodiversity loss...

only if we do that, will we have any hope of averting disaster.”-Sir David Attenborough Scientists from around the globe have been alarmed to find that the loss of biodiversity is affecting all areas of the world, meaning that everybody in the world is being affected in one way or another. Professor Felicia Keesing said “We have a moment to change our world and make it better – THIS IS THAT MOMENT!! Currently in the UK we waste £9.7 billion of food each year!! Is there anything that you & I can do about this? We have become a consumer society feeding a constant ‘want’ rather than a ‘need’. Much of what we consume is produced in a non- sustainable way and/or pollutes the soil, air, waterways & seas. Can you & I use less and make green choices for what we consume? We need our bees and insects. Do we use insecticides in our gardens and houses? We need our government to legislate against imports that pollute, or are produced in a nonsustainable way. We need our government to stop supporting fossil fuel projects and to act fast to support the preservation of biodiversity on our planet. Are we prepared to lobby our MPs about environmental issues and a green recovery? “WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IS UP TO EVERY ONE OF US” I am very interested to hear your thoughts and ideas. Shop's win

WI funds buy nesting boxes

A LOCAL retailer has been named ‘Retailer of the Year’ at the recent Bristol Life Awards. Nicola Bartlett opened Eclectic Gifts on Hanham High Street in 2017. Everything she stocks is designed and made locally in Bristol or the UK, and she works with 60 Bristol-based businesses. Products include artwork inspired by Bristol, sewers who make baby clothes, jewellery, stained glass, home ware, plant pots and ceramics. She reopened after lockdown on June 15, and has also launched a retail website. Nicola said: “Although the shop was closed this year, I’ve been working just as hard as usual to support all the independent businesses who sell their work in the shop so it was fantastic to have that recognised. For many local artists, I was their only source of income during lockdown as I built a retail website and this meant they were still able to sell their work. “It was wonderful to celebrate the very best the city has to offer as a whole, and I’m incredibly proud that Eclectic has been recognised as one of those businesses. The response from customers has been wonderful, many have visited to say congratulations, and that’s truly heart-warming.” Greg Ingham, chief cxecutive of Bristol Life magazine told Nicola: “Our judges were very much impressed by the way that you are helping energise the Hanham High Street community. You quite clearly have a civic approach to running business. Profitable within three months of opening and you strongly encourage business collaboration. Your story is impressive. You’re a real highlight of Hanham High Street.”

KEYNSHAM Group of Avon Wildlife Trust would like to thank Hanham WI for their wonderful donation of £306.25 towards our swift nest boxes. We have been the recipient of their charity work this year and know how hard it must have been to raise money during this period of lockdown and restricted socialising. We are very grateful to all the ladies for the work they have put in, finding novel ways to raise money that included making masks and holding socially distanced garden sales. The money will enable us to organise swift nesting boxes to be made and erected in Keynsham. Swifts have lost many of their nesting locations in older houses and hence struggle to find the means to breed each year after their long journey from central Africa. We hope to locate the new boxes in areas where we know swifts currently nest as they are very gregarious birds and communal nests are common. Thank you again, Hanham WI! n NEWS A FOOTBALL club are eagerly awaiting the decision on their plans for a new 3G Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) at Longwell Green Community Centre, following recent changes to the proposals. As reported in The Voice in July, residents are split over the plans for the pitch, which would replace the grass pitch that is home to Longwell Green Sports FC. South Gloucestershire Council has received more than 300 comments , half from supporters and half from opponents. The football club have been working for over two years to put this project in place with support from the Football Foundation and Labosport, a leading UK sports engineering consultancy in sport infrastructure and equipment. Although there are already stands in place around the pitch, together with floodlights which have planning permission for use up to 10pm at night, the new 3G surface would allow the pitches

'Our plan for a 3G pitch is a once-in-a-lifetime chance' to be used in wet weather or during the winter months. Speaking on behalf of the football club, chairman of the seniors John Gibbs said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the whole of the local community. The football pitches at Shellards Road have been here since 1966 and we need to consider ways to provide and maintain the best possible facilities which will also support the community centre. “We have been listening carefully to the comments that have been submitted to the council as part of its consultation on the planning application and we have made significant changes as a result. “The large earth mound has been removed entirely and the fence height has been more

than halved and we are willing to limit the facilities that can be used to limit the disruption to our neighbours. Our proposals are significantly different to those originally submitted to the council and we look forward to hopefully the planners’ support given the overall benefit to Longwell Green and beyond. “ John said the club have received nearly 200 letters of support for the project and have been given full backing from Oldland Parish Council. He said that the acoustic fence around the perimeter has now been lowered to a height of 2m, the 3G surface is designed to self-drain gradually through the ground, and said thereare already two large car parks on site which take care of parking on training and match days.

He added: “We will also have a proper management team in place to run the project and will work together with the community to make sure we get the best use out of the facility with the minimum of disruption. “The majority of the use during the week will come from junior teams training and local schools which will create very little noise with no crowd watching or referee’s whistles. I understand that some residents were misinformed thinking that there would be live matches every evening with crowds, but this will not be the case.” The application (reference: P20/07175/F) is awaiting approval by South Gloucestershire Council. Flu - rather than Covid - still the biggest risk this winter

T

HE UK’s topmost human disease national risk remains a flu pandemic. New and emerging infectious diseases, i.e. Covid, was second. Why? Experts agree there is a high probability of another influenza pandemic occurring. Impossible to forecast exact timing. The World Health Organisation estimates that between 2 -7.4 million deaths may occur globally. Half of the UK population may become infected, with between 50,000 and 750,000 deaths that would otherwise not have occurred. You must have guessed where I am going now – Yes, it is time to roll up and get the flu jab but with a sense of urgency and duty. Having your flu vaccination is also now an essential part of our fight against Covid-19.

Having a spike in respiratory illness caused by influenza will bring everything to breaking point. We must never forget flu kills an average of 8,000 people every year in the UK. We are still awaiting a Covid-19 vaccine, and we do not yet know how the Covid-19 virus will react with other seasonal viruses that are commonly around during autumn and winter. Some quick reminders: The jab cannot cause the flu. It takes up to 14 days after the jab to be fully protected; this explains the coincidence. Get in now. You need a flu vaccination every year as the antibodies that protect you from flu decline with time and flu strains can also change from year to year. How can we improve cycle routes? OLDLAND Parish Council has launched a project to encourage more people to cycle and walk, particularly for those shorter local journeys. It believes that for this to succeed a safe and inviting cycling/walking network of pathways and routes is required. The Government and local authorities, including the West of England Combined Authority, offer funding schemes to promote and support cycling and walking. Oldland Parish Council wants to take advantage of this opportunity. The council is asking people to give their views. Its online consultation has already received valuable comments which are being followed up. These include liaising with South Glos Council to clear overgrown vegetation and joining forces with Keynsham Town Council to explore opportunities to improve the cycling/walking routes between Willsbridge and Keynsham. Comments can be submitted at https://oldlandactivetravel. commonplace.is/ The closing date for comments is October 23. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Eating out really did help out

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

THANK you to everyone who supported our local hospitality businesses through the government’s innovative Eat Out To Help Out scheme over the summer. A total of 40,000 meals were claimed across the Kingswood constituency. 43 eateries signed up, among 764 in Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire and 6,671 across the South West. Over £253,000 was claimed in discounts across Kingswood. On average, each registered restaurant in Kingswood claimed £6.33 average discount per meal. After a challenging few months because of coronavirus, the scheme has helped to protect jobs locally, with restaurant bookings significantly up on the previous year. Eat Out to Help Out was just one part of the government’s Plan for Jobs, an ambitious

£30 billion strategy to create, protect and support jobs as the country bounces back from coronavirus. As the local MP, I am pleased that the government will continue to support the hospitality industry with a temporary discount to VAT, from 20% to 5%, until 12 January 2021. This is another part of the Chancellor’s Plan for Jobs and we will continue to protect, support and create jobs to ensure we come back stronger as a nation. As well as heavy discounts and targeted tax cuts, there is also a new job retention bonus, which aims to reward and incentivise employers who bring staff back from furlough with a one-off payment of £1,000 for every furloughed employee who remains continuously employed through to the end of January 2021. For local youngsters, a

kickstart scheme will create six-month work placements for those aged 16-24. Funding made available for each job will cover 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week, plus other costs. There will also be new payments for businesses for hiring apprentices and new funding for traineeships. From protecting local jobs and businesses to protecting our precious local environment – I was delighted to participate in the Great British September Clean and lead litter picks across the constituency, from Longwell Green to Emersons Green. The Great British Spring Clean had been due to happen during March and April, but was delayed because of coronavirus and I would like to thank all those who have given up their time to help keep their local neighbourhoods clean and tidy.

Roman finds

THE Bristol and Bath area is rich in Roman history. This includes a large villa on the current site of Keynsham cemetery, a smaller villa on the Somerdale site, and what is thought to be the Roman township of Trajectus sited on a ford of the River Avon at Keynsham. In the Kingswood area, a Roman villa or farm was found adjacent to the Ring Road at Pomphrey Hill and is now beneath Cleve Rugby ground. A televised dig on the Chase School site discovered a Roman sarcophagus which was later on display at Bristol City Museum. It is believed that a Roman road connecting Bath with the Roman port at Portus Abonae (modern Sea Mills) followed the line of the current A431 through Bitton, Willsbridge, Longwell Green and Hanham. Works to build the A4174 ring road in Stonehill, Hanham, revealed the site of a 4th Century Romano British settlement that was probably a farm and a metal working site. Finds including jewellery moulds, a millifiore brooch and a metal working furnace can be seen on display in Kingswood Heritage Museum.

Kingswood museum is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11am until 5pm. It is located in the former Champion Brass Works, at Tower Lane, Warmley, BS30 8XT, just off Avon Ring Road (Cadbury Heath exit). Buses 19, 19a, 42 and 43 stop nearby.

n ADVICE COLUMN DID you know that over 1.2 million people of state pension age in the UK are not claiming Pension Credit they could be receiving? They’re missing out on extra income as well as valuable additional benefits. Could you be one of them? Here’s just a few of the things on which you could be missing out: • A top up to your pension • Help with your council tax • Help with your housing costs • Free NHS dental treatment • Help with the cost of glasses • Help with the cost of transport to hospital

• ‘Cold weather payments’ of £25 if the temperature falls below 0°C for seven days in a row • Reductions to your water/sewerage bill • Extra income if you have caring responsibilities or are disabled • And if you’re over 75, a free TV licence. Pension Credit is a payment made by the Pension Service to top up the income of people or couples who receive the state pension, if their income falls below a certain level. That level is different for each person, dependent on a number of factors, so it’s worth getting an independent and free benefits check to

see whether you should make a claim – even if you’ve tried before and had your claim rejected. Age UK South Gloucestershire is a member of the South Gloucestershire Advice Service, which offers a free Pension Credit check to anyone in South Gloucestershire who has reached state pension age. They can be contacted on 01454 411707 (select option 1).
