Crying foul over floodlights bid RESIDENTS opposing AEK -BOCO Football Club's expansion plans have shown they don't intend to back down. Dozens of concerned homeowners turned up at a consultation event to make it clear the club's proposal for spectator stands, fencing and floodlights is unwelcome and will cause misery for people living near the site, particularly those in Tyler Close, Colthurst Drive, Greenbank Road and Kingsfield Lane.

The football club has now applied to South Gloucestershire Council for "landlord's permission" to seek planning permission for eight 15m high floodlights, 1.8m fencing and two covered stands for about 100 people. If this is agreed, the club can apply for planning consent and a further consultation will take place. The club says it is unable to progress through the leagues unless its ground complies with the Football Association's

"Standards for Step 6" which require improvements to their facilities. Club bosses argue the impact would be minimal as the floodlights would only be switched on during Saturday match days and one midweek evening. But during the consultation meeting resident Kim Madan told the Voice the club had now outgrown the site. "The plans mean the club are Turn to Page 2

Floodlights protest From Page 1 going to be restricting use of the site for the community. A lot of people walk their dogs there and many others use it on a casual basis, especially in the summer. It's just not big enough for a stand, fencing and seating. It's not the right place." Karen Jefferies said: "I'm not happy that an open space which was a play area for me and my children will not be there for my children. "This development is not focussed on the children - it's for adults. "There's already enough noise and disturbance; it's relentless. The football season finishes and then training starts. It can make it very difficult to use the field." Rob Mittins said: "We support the youth team but not the ambitions the club has for the site - a site which is surrounded by houses. They need to take it to another location." One Tyler Close resident, who asked not to be named, said: "They (the club) aren't good neighbours at all. They view us as a nuisance and don't like us walking past the clubhouse. What they say and what they do are two different things. They have now outgrown this ground." Another Tyler Close resident, Caroline Ratchford, said the noise from the club was "horrendous". "We moved to Tyler Close in 1987 and there were no football pitches. It was heaven and that's why we bought our house. "If I want to sit in my garden, it's just like being in a pub with the constant babble. It happens during and after the game. A lot of neighbours can't have barbecues or have their grandchildren to stay because of the swearing. "Of course there should be progress but it needs to be the right sort of progress." Steve Ashlin (pictured), who overlooks the site in Tyler Close, said: "I've spoken to many people here and the common consensus is that the site is too small and too close to homes. "A lot of people say they would not buy their house again if the plans are approved. People will find it difficult to sell their homes and there would be huge claims going in against the council. We will seek legal advice in this - it's not a threat; it's a reasonable thing to do." The consultation meeting, held at Longwell Green Community Centre on September 25, attracted Hanham councillors Heather and John Goddard who felt the club was doing a good job supporting youngsters. Cllr John Goddard said: "BOCO do a positive job and keep 600 children off the streets and away from creating anti-social behaviour. The club also does a better job in maintaining the site than the council could do." Cllr Heather Goddard said: "Do you put 600 children on the streets or keep that fantastic facility? It's all about balance. If the club went, the site wouldn't be an asset. The grass would only be cut twice a year and there would be dog poo everywhere. It could easily go to rack and ruin." Hanham councillor June Bamford was also in attendance but her position as chair of the council's east planning committee means she is unable to comment on the proposals. The consultation process didn't get off to the best start when residents living within 600 metres of the site received a survey through the post which contained no covering letter. The council apologised for the blunder and sent out covering letters which included an invite to the consultation meeting on September 25. However the council said they would not extend the deadline of September 21 for responses to be returned. At the 11th hour, the council had a change of heart and sent out a further letter saying the consultation would now stay open until Friday October 5.

Zebra crossing welcomed

Councillor Colin Hunt at the crossing in West Street, Oldland Common AN ACCIDENT hot spot in Oldland Common should now be a lot safer thanks to a new zebra crossing. The crossing, in West Street near the junction with High Street, follows a history of pedestrians being injured trying to cross the busy road. As part of the work the nearby bus stop was moved because it

would have partially blocked the visibility of the crossing. The work was part of a number of council transport schemes carried out across South Gloucestershire to improve road safety and the flow of traffic. Cabinet member responsible for transport, Cllr Colin Hunt, said: "We are continually working to maintain and

improve our local roads for all users, and it’s great to see these schemes nearing completion. "We are committed to delivering an affordable, low carbon, accessible, integrated, efficient and reliable transport network to support a more competitive economy and better connected, more active and healthy communities."

ean, 23, takes Miss Great Britain title THIS year's Miss Great Britain winner is from Kingswood. Kobi-Jean Cole took the crown at a glittering two-day competition in Leicester, beating fierce competition from 51 other girls across the country. The 23-year-old competed in a series of events, including a two-minute interview with judges, swimwear, white fashionwear and eveningwear rounds and on-the-spot questions to ensure the contestants could think on their feet. Kobi-Jean was crowned Miss Bristol at a regional qualifier earlier this year. She has won Miss Bristol three times - 2015, 2016 and 2018. She came fourth in Miss GB in 2015, fifth the following year and took a year off before taking the crown this year.

The former John Cabot Academy student said: "I was overwhelmed when my name was called out. It was also such a sense of relief as I've wanted it for so long. I couldn't believe it. I was very emotional and started crying." Clearly Kobi-Jean isn't just a pretty face - she has 11 GCSEs and four A-levels. "The judges asked me what I thought was the biggest issue facing my generation today. I said self esteem because there's so much bullying which goes on on social media at the moment. Everyone tries to portray this perfect image, which is unachievable; it's just not real life." Kobi-Jean, a former Two Mile Hill primary pupil, has given up her job in administration to concentrate on her new role as Miss Great

Britain ambassador. She has a number of ideas of what she would like to do during her reign but definitely plans to focus on an anti-bullying campaign by going into schools around the country. Kobi-Jean, who is sponsored by Shield Environmental, has received huge support from her mum Sue, dad Nick and three older sisters, as well as from her friends and wider family. "There were 30 people who travelled up to Leicester to support me. My sisters were all there crying. My dad got up on the stage, hugged me, said how proud he was and then started crying! My friends and family have been amazing - I've been overwhelmed with support." You might expect Kobi-Jean to be quite high maintenance

- but she insists she's not that sort of girl. "The only thing I was doing in preparation which could be described as high maintenance was my gym work as I had a personal trainer and was really focussing on my eating. "I'm not really high maintenance and didn't even have a spray tan. I literally just use cocoa butter on my skin and micellar water and that's it. I do drink lots of water, at least two litres a day, as I think that's the secret to good skin." In her spare time Kobi-Jean loves singing and acting and going for long dog walks with her nieces and nephews. An international final beckons in January when KobiJean will be pulling out all the stops to become Miss Tourism World 2018.

Turning the clock back to the 1940 YOU could be forgiven for thinking you'd stepped back in time at a recent event at Avon Valley Railway. The popular tourist attraction turned the clocks back for a 1940s weekend of vintage fun to give a flavour of what life was during during the Second World War. The event, from September 22-23, saw the car park of the heritage railway awash with military vehicles with re-enactor displays as well as Punch and Judy and barrel organ shows. There was 40s-style entertainment and glamour from Jayne Darling and the Cat’s Pyjamas while Goodnight Sweetheart female groups also wowed visitors. Even ‘Sir Winston Churchill’ decided to pay a visit to make some speeches, arriving and departing each day in a military convoy. There was also vintage bus rides to Warmley signal box and a display of the former Somerdale factory Sentinel locomotive, which is currently being restored at the railway. Mark Simmons, the railway’s commercial and business manager, said: "Our 1940s weekend is one of our most popular events of the year."

Careers Hub launch Tim Bowles, West of England Mayor, said: “We need the right skills for businesses now and into the future. The new careers hub will ensure young people have more opportunities to connect with the world of work and potential future employers. Evidence shows that if a student has four or more opportunities to engage with an employer, they are more likely to secure employment, and earn more during their career.” Claudia Harris, chief executive of the Careers & Enterprise Company, which has contributed funding to the project, said: “If employers, schools and colleges can better prepare young people for the world of work, we’re not just benefiting the future economy, but improving prospects for thousands of young people.” Chair of the West of England LEP, Professor Steve West, said: “The careers hub will play a key role in the long-term success of our region’s economy.”

LOCAL schools and colleges are taking part in an initiative to improve career opportunities for young people. The West of England Careers Hub will enable participating schools to strengthen links with employers and to work with trained volunteers from the business community, who are known as enterprise advisers. Each school involved will receive up to £3,500 a year. Among those taking part are Sir Bernard Lovell Academy, Bristol Brunel Academy, Digitech Studio School and St Brendan’s Sixth Form College. The careers hub, launched on September 20, will initially work with 25 schools and colleges from across Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. It already has 49 enterprise advisers and is looking for more. If you are interested in getting involved please contact enterprise@ westofengland-ca.gov.uk.

Joining forces with Japan THREE students from Digitech Studio School in Warmley took part in a cultural exchange with high school students from Japan. They stayed in student halls at the University of Cambridge and were involved in university level scientific workshops with visitors from Tokyo. Lewis Wild, Rohan Dewan and Mahir Saciid shared rooms with the Japanese students, exchanged cultural traditions and participated in research at the university. Lewis said: “The UK-Japan Young Scientists Workshop was an amazing opportunity in which I was privileged to take part.” Rohan said: “One of the best things was being able to meet new people and make new Japanese and English friends. I know I will keep in touch with them for a very long time. Staying in halls was a new experience for a lot of us but everyone was very welcoming and living in an active university environment showed us a glimpse of what university might be like.” Mahir said: “From doing this project I have gained a lot of knowledge of what the life of a university student and a research engineer would be like if I chose to pursue this career path. This experience has made me even more attracted to engineering.”

National honour for Wellsway cricketers WELLSWAY School’s 1st XI cricket team are celebrating a national award for a victory achieved “in the true spirit of the game”. The accolade has come from the Forty Club, a team of adult cricketers who play matches every year against many of the best schools in the country and whose patron is HRH Prince Philip. Wellsway’s 2018 match against the Forty Club was memorable because star batsman George Wilshire scored 100 not out - his second century in successive seasons. It was a closely-fought contest; the opposition declared at 195-7 and Wellsway met the target, losing just three wickets and scoring the winning runs with just five minutes left of play. George, who left Year 13 this summer, was a student at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy, one of the partner schools in the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust.

The team, with star player George Wilshire second from right, seated He was invited to Lord’s earlier this year in recognition of his 2017 century against the MCC and representatives of the school will be visiting Lord’s Cricket Ground to pick up the 2018 Forty Club Trophy. The team’s manager Richard May said he was glad to give boys

from other Trust schools the opportunity to play senior cricket in Wellsway’s 1st XI. Wellsway have won the regional Forty Club title before but this is the first time they have taken the national trophy. Schools are judged on sportsmanship, captaincy,

behaviour on and off the field, and general turnout as well as teamwork, batting, bowling and fielding. The match report on the Forty Club website said: There was little doubt who was the man of the match with George Wilshire carrying his bat for 100 not out in an innings that was a pleasure to watch. The match itself was played very competitively but in the true spirit of cricket. The school were well supported by their master Richard May and the quality of cricket played by them was exceptional. As was their conduct and approach to the game which was one of real enthusiasm, a will to win and with good humour at all times.” Mr May said: “I am utterly delighted that the team has won this award and especially proud of the manner in which the boys played the game. It will be an honour to go to Lord’s to receive the award.”

Ryan wows headteachers at national conference STUDENTS from a school for boys and girls with social, emotional and mental health difficulties celebrated success at two award events. The youngsters, from Warmley-based New Horizons Learning Centre, took part in the ENGAGE creative awards, where students from across South Gloucestershire submitted photographs, short stories and poems. New Horizons put forward ten entries based on the theme 'Our World' and came away with two Gold prizes and one Silver. The three awards were all in the primary section, with Austin Allen (Y4) receiving Gold for his photo; Kody Paget (Y6) scooping Gold for his poem and Ben Wood (Y6) taking Silver for his poem. Further success came when the local authority-maintained school entered four students into the ENGAGE national awards for the first time, with three of the four entrants - Rio McLoughlin, Tom Scott and Ryan House -

Gail Emms MBE with Ryan House (left) and Rio Mcloughlin shortlisted from more than 300 entries. The ceremony was hosted by former badminton world champion Gail Emms, MBE, who

presented the awards. Executive headteacher Tania Craig, who attended the event with deputy head Sian Jenkins, said: "Ryan stood in front of

the whole assembled group of parents, young people and headteachers and talked about his experiences at NHLC, how staff helped him and how the opportunity to go up Everest as part of the ‘Highest Classroom’ project transformed his life. He was brilliant and spoke very eloquently. "Ryan returned the following day at ENGAGE's national conference to speak to a room of over 100 heads and senior leaders about his time at NHLC and what we did to make his life better. It was awesome and he made the NHLC staff present, and many others in the room, cry with his heartfelt story and feelings. "It was very powerful and at the end he was approached by a number of heads asking him to go to speak at their schools and conferences. "It was such a proud moment in the life of NHLC and our lives as leaders of this amazing school."

Men urged to talk about women’s cancers

OVER 21,000 women in the UK are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer every year* but awareness of symptoms is still very poor according to leading cancer charities. Now, as a follow on of Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, which ran throughout September, campaigners are calling on people to open up and discuss the subject – and they mean men as well as women. “Cancer doesn’t just affect the person with the disease – it affects everyone connected to that person - that means it is much more than just a ‘woman’s problem’,” according to Mr Amit Patel, a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynae-oncologist at Spire Hospital in Bristol. “Women and men need to be more aware of what is normal because this is the only way they will be able to tell when something is wrong. As with all cases of cancer the quicker it is detected the better the treatment outcomes,” he added. Mr Patel said: “The lack of basic

knowledge about the female body or conversations around how the female anatomy works, is very worrying – how can we expect what to look out for if we don’t know what is normal and what could be cancer. “A vast medical knowledge is not required to remain healthy. Being aware of and simply taking time to address any symptoms that could be associated with possibility of cancer can prevent or detect cancer at early stages.” The five cancers categorised as gynaecological in order of how common they are: Endometrial Cancer or cancer of the womb: Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom. If you have been through the menopause any vaginal bleeding is considered abnormal. If not then ‘unusual bleeding’ may include bleeding between your periods. About 8,475 new cases are diagnosed in the UK every year - most in women aged 40 to 74 who have been through the menopause. Ovarian cancer: The fifth most

common cancer amongst women in the UK with more than 7,000 women diagnosed each year. Because symptoms are not well known or often mistaken for as ‘tummy troubles’ or period pains, it is usually discovered in the late stages when successful treatment is much more difficult. Symptoms that may require assessment include weight loss, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, bloating, and bowel or bladder problems. Women should seek help if any of these symptoms are noticed particularly if they are persistent or progressive. Cervical cancer: Cancer of the cervix (the entrance to the womb from the vagina) often has no symptoms in its early stages. If you do have symptoms, the most common is unusual vaginal bleeding, which can occur after sex, in between periods or after the menopause. Abnormal bleeding doesn't mean that you definitely have cervical cancer, but it should be investigated by your GP as soon as possible. Also taking part in the

cervical screening programme is very effective way of preventing cervical cancer. Cancer of the vulva: The vulva is a woman's external genitals including the lips surrounding the vagina (labia minora and labia majora), the clitoris, and the Bartholin's glands (two small glands each side of the vagina). Symptoms can include a persistent itch, pain, soreness or tenderness in the vulva. You should also look out for ulcer, raised and thickened patches of skin that can be red, white or dark or any lumps or wart-like growths. Vaginal cancer: A rare form of cancer with around 260 new cases diagnosed in the UK each year. The most common symptom of vaginal cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding although smelly or bloody vaginal discharge, pain during sex or pain when urinating can also be indicators, as can irregular or heavier periods. *Figures from Cancer Research UK

The adorable puppy who could save a life

MEET DJ the black Labrador. He might look cute but this little pup has far more serious business to think about - one day he could save owner Hermione's life. For the 16-week-old pooch is in training to become a 'Hypo Hound', an assistance dog which alerts owners living with Type 1 diabetes to dangerous changes in their blood sugars. Hermione Wheeler, 14, was diagnosed with the potentially fatal condition when she was just eight years old. She has been hospitalised twice and nearly lost her life. Once DJ is fully trained he will be able to detect both 'hypos' - dangerously low blood sugar levels - and 'hypers' - when blood sugar levels are too high. Mum Amy Wheeler, 38, said Hermione, a pupil at Downend School, has really struggled managing her condition. She has to test her blood every two hours and check her insulin levels each time she eats. "Two years ago Hermione was in Bristol Children's Hospital for a week. Her key tone levels were 12 - that's dangerously high. It wasn't until I brought her home that it hit me that she could have died. "Unfortunately, Hermione really suffers on a daily basis. I know diabetic children who inject three units of insulin three times a day and they are level and can deal with it. But Hermione's bloods are all over the place, and she really struggles. "I live in fear every day, especially now she's a teenager, that she could end up back in hospital." DJ has been living with the family since August and he has bonded really well with Hermione and her family, including step-dad Leighton, brother Herbie and sisters Grace and Daisy. The Kent-based charity Hypo Hounds will visit every few months to help train DJ to what is known as 'Gold Award' standard, where he is fully able to detect chemical changes within Hermione's body and alert her before she has hypoglycaemia or a 'hypo', where her blood sugar changes. Hermione can then test her blood and either have

Teenager Hermione Wheeler with her Hypo Hound puppy DJ something to eat or drink water, depending on whether her levels are low or high. Amy, with the support of her rugby club Chipping Sodbury RFC, has launched a massive fundraising mission in order to pay back as much as possible of the £12,000 it costs the charity to train DJ. She initially set a target of £4,000, the minimum required by the charity, but Amy is so grateful to them, she wants to cover the full cost. Recently, a 30-strong group from the club, along with Hermione and DJ, raised £857 when they trekked 16.5 miles Clifton Down railway station to their home ground. A further £800 has been raised by the rugby club, and Hermione's personal fundraiser to swim the length of the channel in stages looks set to raise more than £1,400. Amy said: "We want to raise awareness, as well as money. A lot of people don't understand what Type 1 diabetes is. It's not brought on by lifestyle, like Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 has nothing to do with Hermione eating too many sweets or the wrong foods. "If she keeps having as many hypos has she's been having, she could lose her eyesight, go deaf, lose her feet or have a heart attack. Not having your bloods under control can do so many horrendous things to your body. "I want to raise as much

Fancy a fiery challenge? KINGSWOOD-based charity Jessie May is inviting supporters to walk on fire this Bonfire Night to help raise money. The children’s hospice charity is encouraging individuals to take on the fiery challenge this November to help fund their nurses who support local terminally ill children and their families. Supporters are invited to take part in the firewalk on November 5 at Avon Valley Adventure & Wildlife Park, who will be hosting their annual fireworks display and funfair. Jessie May community fundraiser Helen Mackie said: "It’s safe to say we are all fired up for this exhilarating fundraising challenge! This is without a doubt the shortest sponsored walk Jessie May will offer – and also the hottest! "Bonfire Night brings the whole family together, and this year we want to make it even more exciting, and really turn up the heat. Those taking part in the firewalk will have two hours of training before taking on the coals, which will be led by Blaze Firewalking, the charity firewalking experts. "It costs £10 to register for the firewalk, and we ask that firewalkers raise a minimum of £100 for taking on the challenge in support of Jessie May." All firewalkers will have free entry to the event at the adventure park. Firewalkers must arrive for 5pm on the evening ahead of the firewalk training. Gates open to the public at 5pm, with the firewalk display taking place at around 7.15pm. The minimum age for firewalkers is 14, with parental consent required for all 14 and 15 year olds. To register call Helen on 0117 958 2174, or email helen.mackie@ jessiemay.org.uk

Hanham Abbots headteacher Matthew Norcott judged the best cake from each school, which was won by Elta Woodham for the juniors and Monika Kowalska for the infants. Pupils helped make the hall look colourful by decorating cake and coffee-themed bunting. Sally Britton, chair of Friends of Samuel White's, said the event raised ÂŁ500 for Macmillan: "Thanks to everyone, all of the Star Bakers and the cake eaters, for helping to make our Macmillan coffee morning raise an unbelievable sum for a fantastic cause." Just around the corner, at Hanham Community Centre, another event was taking place, raising a whopping ÂŁ1,017. The fundraiser was organised by Hanham WI with the help of family and friends and attracted scores of visitors, all wowed by the vast array of cakes on offer. A book stall and raffle, which was full of prizes donated by local businesses and traders, helped boost funds. Maureen Parfrey, of Hanham WI, said she was staggered by the amount raised and wanted to thank everyone who had helped make it such a success. "It was incredible. I would like to acknowledge with grateful thanks the traders in Hanham who contributed so generously to the raffle as well as the friends of Macmillan for their cash donations, Hanham WI members, family and friends for making this event happen, Hanham Community Centre who kindly donated the venue, and to every person that attended the event."

Friends and committee members from Hanham WI rallied together to make sure the coffee morning was a huge success

Pupils Noah, Carys, Eleanor, Abel, Daisy and Dominic helped support a joint fundraiser between Friends of Samuel White's infants and Friends of Hanham Abbots Juniors. Inset: The three-layer cake won Star Baker for Elta Woodham, from the junior school

Need You Dead by Peter James

Thirteen, may not be a lucky number for some, but it certainly is for Peter James. This novel, the thirteenth in the Roy Grace series is really great. All the years of research, knowledge and experience make this a police procedural to die for! James is at the top of his game, and the story races along at a cracking pace. A young woman is found dead in her bath. Is it murder or suicide? Who are the mystery men caught on CCTV, visiting her flat? Is her husband, who has been her abuser in the past, the culprit? Woven into this, is the personal life of Grace. He has to bury his first wife, who has been found in Germany, after having been missing for ten years. Then he has to acquaint himself with the ten year old son, he hadn’t known existed. He is certainly a man, with a lot on his plate. This is a truly wonderful crime novel. I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. Joy, Hanham Library

Leisure centres lead charity walk PEOPLE across South Gloucestershire have taken part in a 22-mile charity walk in support of Macmillan Cancer Support. The event, hosted by the region’s Active Lifestyle Centres, saw staff members Dave Smele and Jim Rollo lead walkers on a route between each of the region’s five centres in Bradley Stoke, Kingswood, Longwell Green, Thornbury and Yate. The BIG Active Walk coincided with this year's National Fitness Day which aims to highlight the importance of leading healthier and active lifestyles. Jim, healthy lifestyle manager at the Active Centres and assistant manager at Bath City Football Club, said: "We’re always looking for ways to inspire healthy lifestyles and encourage members of the public to become more active, so it made sense for us to get the

n LETTERS Don’t forget about the neighbours I FEEL I have to respond to your letter in the August edition of this publication regarding AEK Boko being a Community Asset to the local area. Whilst nobody would disagree that getting young people into sport is a good thing, the football club must remember that if it seen as a community asset then it must work with, and respect that community that was here before the football club! Nobody would also disagree that the playing field is in a much better overall condition than it used to be. However it is obvious that the football pitch outside the club house does get overused to the extent that when we are in the depths of winter the pitch gets very muddy and is unplayable and numerous matches are postponed. This also affects the other pitches which get waterlogged and unplayable too. Also, does anyone think of the residents in Greenbank and the adjoining side roads which

get clogged up with cars on pavements etc when all three football pitches are being used at the same time? What about the noise and anti social behaviour that gets generated from the clubhouse when in full swing? As for raising funds for charities, do not forget that all the time they are doing this, residents around the playing field are also affected and have to close their doors and windows to keep out the noise. Invariably when these matches are going on residents are unable to sit or use their gardens. Children have to be taken indoors in case of foul language! Do not forget that plenty of money goes into the Boko coffers too from the clubhouse bar. There also appears to be an arrogance around the football club following the overwhelming objections two years ago about the subject of erecting flood lights and associated building. Rather than have the plan rejected they withdrew the plan and now hide behind South Glos Council and various sporting bodies and present it again. Is this working with and listening to the community or just

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR September topic was Images of Change from the 1930s. Mike Britton described the changes in society from the 1930s to the present day, highlighting family life, transport, holidays, the effects of World War Two, food shortages etc. He also spoke about how people went about daily life and the differences compared with today, a look down memory lane at how we used to live. On October 2 our topic will be The Newport Medieval Ship, a fifteenth century sailing vessel discovered in 2002 in the city of Newport. Originally 116 feet long, she was capable of continental voyages. Surely unmissable! n MESSAGE FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore MP for Kingswood

writes for Hanham & Longwell Green Voice AS a local man and with my constituency office on Hanham High Street, I was naturally delighted to join in the “Love Hanham High Street” campaign celebrating local independent shops and small businesses in

the area. High streets are often the beating heart and hub of the community, and we have a fantastic one here in Hanham; with its diverse shops and stores, it is a real meeting point for our community. This locally-led initiative will bring residents together in celebrating the success of our great High Street and promoting the local economy in Hanham. The group behind the campaign helped make the recent Easter Egg Hunt and summer fairs a success, and they are already busy working to organise their next events, with the upcoming Pumpkin Trail promising to be a hit with local families and children. I am also looking forward to hosting the Christmas Grotto in my office on the High Street this December as part of our Hanham Christmas Fair. I was also extremely pleased to hear that new measures to address dangerous driving and speeding near Lower Hanham Road are now being considered by South Gloucestershire Council. I welcome the proposed introduction of speed tables and speed cushions

on the road near the Mount Hill Road junction, as well as a speed table near Tabernacle Road. These crucial road improvements are set to be introduced by 2019. I have been working with local residents on our campaign for road safety measures in the area for many years, especially after the tragic deaths of Ross and Clare Simons in 2013. Working alongside Ross and Clare’s families on the Justice 4 Ross and Clare campaign, and thanks to huge support from local residents, we were able to bring about positive changes to the law on dangerous driving, increasing the maximum penalty from 14 years to life imprisonment. I am therefore delighted to see that our campaign continues to bring safety improvements for our community after many years. These proposals are great news for local people, and they could help reduce traffic speeds and make our area safer for all. I was recently delighted to host my very first Wellbeing Fair on Friday September 28 at the Longwell Green Community Centre. Many organisations

attended and ran stalls, including Citizens Advice Bureau, the Alzheimer’s Society, the Stroke Association and many others. Blood pressure tests were offered to residents and Terry’s School of Dance for the elderly also gave a dance demonstration. As a local man and as the local MP I believe it is important for me to represent every member of our community. That is why I organised this Wellbeing Fair, to give older people in our area the opportunity to meet with local clubs and organisations, to discuss any issues they might have, and be informed about services they might be interested in or could benefit from. All local residents over 65 from around Hanham and Longwell Green were invited to this event, at which I helped to showcase our fantastic local services and provide helpful advice. For any information about any similar events I may be running in the future or for anything else, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me by phoning 0117 908 1524 or emailing chris. skidmore.mp@parliament.uk

More success for GB Britton Bowls Club KINGSWOOD-based GB Britton Bowls Club finished their season on a high with more success on the green. Following their achievement in winning the Clarence Davey Cup the GB Britton A team went on to take the Bristol and District League 1 title. The title race went down to the last match of the season and in winning the championship the club broke Olveston’ s four-year stranglehold on the league. More success came when the GB Britton B team won the North East Bristol League Cup. In a closely contested final at St Anne’s Park the team beat Kingswood and Hanham, last year’s winners. After these latest successes Club Chairman Peter Coles said: “This has been a tremendous season for the club, culminating in an unprecedented treble. It is a fitting reward for the dedication and hard work of all club members.”

Successful GB Britton team with the league cup The club, which was founded in 1919, celebrates its centenary next year and is planning a number of events including

Pumpkins, Pumpkins!

Join us for our heaviest and best carved pumpkin competition. Everyone’s welcome to join in and it’s free to enter. EARLIER this year we announced our new Pumpkin Competition on the weekend of 27th and 28th October and encouraged everyone to grow their own heaviest or perhaps monster pumpkin to enter. We also want to see who can carve the scariest ones, the spookier the better. The rules to our competition are quite easy to follow and we’d like to invite everyone to come along with their exhibits. Rule one for the heaviest pumpkin is that it must be home grown, there’s no rule two! If you’d like to enter the best carved pumpkin you can buy one from anywhere you choose but it must be carved before you enter, you can even put a light inside to make it look fearsome, but only battery types please. Of course, please take care when carving especially if children are around, they’ll be fascinated to see a scary face taking shape. If you’ve not carved before try a little research for ideas of the best faces and draw an outline for the eyes, nose and mouth with a felt marker to help guide you. And when you’ve scooped out the flesh put it to good use by making some delicious soup to share at your Hallowe’en party, there are lots of recipes to be found.

The saying goes, that the fun of entering a competition is always the best part and we agree, so come on have a go; the winner of the heaviest or best carved class each receives £10. Entry forms can be picked up from our Allotment Shop in Nicholas Lane, St. George, BS5 8TY or you can request one by email or telephone, full contact details at the end of this report. During the weekend of our competition all exhibits will be open for viewing between 9.00am and 12.30pm so bring the family and have a look round, you’ll be most grisly welcome, if you dare. As just mentioned pumpkins make great soups and if you’ve been lucky enough to grow some Butternut Squash these do as well. Both these will store well for several weeks in cool dry place so no need to use them all at once if you’ve some left after Hallowe’en. Garlic each day keeps Vampires away Our report this month may seem like it’s been written by Count Dracula himself and you may come across him or his legendary Vampires over the next few weeks ahead, and if you do there’s one sure fire solution to keep them both at bay – GARLIC. This happens to remind me, October is the start of the garlic planting season. There are various types and it’s worth taking time to discover which could suit your tastes best. The Elephant variety has a very mild flavour. The Softneck types are relatively easy to

October, 2018

grow producing plenty of cloves and stores well. Hardneck varieties on the other hand produce fewer but larger cloves. But whatever your choice, their robust aromas will all help keep those black-caped fiends with awesome fangs away. Want a Plot?

If growing your own with fresh veg that can be harvested and cooked the same day all without air miles or chemicals is appealing, why not consider an allotment of your own? We have seven sites within the St. George area with plots that range in various sizes to meet everyone’s requirements. Call in and enquire of any vacancies we have or use our contact details below, we’ll be delighted to help and you could be up and running with your own plot quickly. n VETS' ADVICE

How can I eliminate fleas? Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

With modern living and mild winters, flea infestations can occur at any time of the year. It is much easier to prevent fleas than it is to combat an invasion. Once a flea infestation has been established, it can take weeks to clear, so avoiding the problem in the first place is key. The best way to avoid fleas is by giving your pets regular preventative treatment so that they, and your home, are constantly protected. If you think you may have a problem with fleas, speak to your vet practice, or book in for a free appointment with one of our

Amie Britton RVN Highcroft Veterinary Group

nurses who will be happy to help. They will check your pet for fleas* and give you all the advice you need for a flea-free home. It is estimated that 95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in your home environment, not on your pet. For each adult flea on your pet, there could be a minimum of 20 developing in the environment - usually in your carpets and furnishings. If your pet does have fleas, the first step will be to treat them with the appropriate veterinary treatments that are proven to be effective and safe. All pets in your home will need to be treated. Be sure to get advice from your vet practice as some products can be toxic if given to the wrong pets. Wash and treat all bedding and use an insecticide spray (available at your surgery) that will kill the fleas and larvae living in your house. This could be a challenge if your pet has the run of the house -

you will need to vacuum and spray everywhere. Include their beds, your beds, carpets, floors, furniture etc. Also, don't forget to empty your vacuum cleaner or change the bag after vacuuming your house. For more information, or to book an appointment with a practice nurse, please do not hesitate to call us at Longwell Green Veterinary Centre on 0117 932 3660. *Please note. Your pet will require a vet appointment for prescription treatments if they have not been seen by one of our vets within the last 12 months. This may incur a fee.
