Disabled driver fined for parking outside his home

I've got a blue badge - but at times I'm in too much pain to move car A DISABLED Hanham resident has been slapped with more than £500 in fines for parking outside his home. Paul Morgan has chronic emphysema and gets out of breath if he walks too far. It means he has no choice but to park on the single yellow lines outside his home in Holmwood. Although there are unrestricted spaces at the end of his cul-de-sac, these are often taken by people parking there while they use the local shops. Paul, 57, who only moved in a year ago, regularly accumulates fixed penalty notices and at the last count estimated the fines amount to around £520. He has pleaded with South Gloucestershire Council to do away with the yellow lines and introduce a residents' parking scheme instead but his request has so far fallen on deaf ears. The unemployed painter said: “There are single yellow lines each side of the road but at the end of the cul-de-sac there's no parking restrictions. “The problem is that people park there who don't live in this street so the residents, some Turn to Page 3

Trust helps prevent holiday hunger THE kitchens of Sir Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common turned out 19,000 packed lunches in six weeks to make sure children did not go hungry. Zest, the catering arm of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, led a massive group of volunteers for the Feeding Bristol initiative in the school summer holidays. Catering operations manager Claire Mansri and SBL catering manager Bev Smith took delivery of food from the charity FareShare South West and supervised the making of sandwiches to fill 500 lunch bags a day. Many volunteers came from city firms, organised by Feeding Bristol, but a number of people connected to the Trust and its schools also got involved.

“We provided a total of 87 volunteer days - 63 adults and 24 children,” said Mrs Mansri. Volunteers collected the meals daily and distributed them around the city to children at playschemes and at activity sessions in libraries, community centres and parks. FareShare South West also supplied food at many holiday clubs so that children and adults could cook meals, meaning that about 50,000 children and their families benefited. Tim Howes, business director of Wellsway MAT, said: “We are very proud of Zest for stepping up to support this vital service for families in need in Bristol. Well done to Claire and Bev and to all the volunteers who gave up their time to help children in need.”

Disabled driver racks up £500 in parking tickets From Page 1 who are disabled like me, have difficulties parking. “I'm not the only one to have parking tickets, even carers who have come to care for disabled residents have got them.” Paul and fellow residents, who are all over the age of 55, petitioned the council for action but the authority says proposals for a residents' parking scheme in Holmwood have not “scored highly enough”, although the authority has not ruled out such a scheme in the future. Paul, who is registered disabled, said he has now paid most of the fines after he was threatened with a visit from bailiffs. “Most have been paid apart from one. There was nothing I could do as I didn't want the bailiffs coming round knocking on the door. I can't easily afford it but I had no choice.” Paul said he plans to continue parking outside his house. “I don't want to get any more tickets but I don't see any other option but to park outside my house. I've parked in the spaces at the end of the road a few times but most of the time it's too busy. My breathing isn't good and to walk from the end of the road to my house,

isn't good for me. “I've got a blue badge and put that on my windscreen for three hours but sometimes I'm in too much pain to move my car. It's crazy that you can't park outside your house when you have a disability. “I think it's disgusting the council won't introduce residents' parking. They get a lot of revenue from parking tickets in this road so I don't think they care.” A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said: “We are aware of the concerns raised about parking on Holmwood. We are required to manage road use for all road users, including local residents and those who drive through the area and may wish to

use local shops. “Changing road markings or setting up an enforceable residents parking scheme is a lengthy process and requires very significant input in terms of both funding, consultation and legal process. The process of reviewing traffic management for an area takes in excess of 12 months, we rarely look at single sites as it is often more effective to review an area rather than an individual street. An area-wide review covering the ward of Hanham was completed relatively recently, with changes implemented in October 2017, although this did not include proposals for residents parking in Holmwood. “Following previous discussions with Mr Morgan and a petition to the council, a proposal to introduce a residents parking scheme has been developed and may be considered for inclusion in the capital programme, however we need to balance our resources against priorities across the road network and to date it has not scored highly enough to be selected.” The spokesperson added that the scheme remains available for selection as part of the 2020/21 capital programme but if it's not chosen then, it will remain available for possible future selection.

n NEWS ORGANISED criminals are behind a cannabis factory in Kingswood, police say. Officers seized more than 1,000 cannabis plants with a potential street value of more than £1.1m from an industrial unit in Moravian Road. Information provided by a member of the public led officers to the unit where they discovered electricity had been diverted from a nearby substation to power the equipment used to grow the plants. Western Power Distribution have since made the building safe. The cannabis and equipment were removed by the police's Operation Viscount team before specialist crime scene investigators examined the unit. The drugs will now be destroyed. PC Henry Bird said: “Those responsible for producing these plants were not doing it as a hobby or for their own personal use, they are organised criminals who we believe were exploiting vulnerable people to unscrupulously line their pockets.

“This seizure is a significant blow to these criminals and has prevented a large amount of drugs from hitting our streets and having a detrimental effect on our communities.” He added: “Not only is there

often a very human cost to organised cannabis grows such as this but they also pose a very real risk. Abstracting electricity in the way done at this unit is obviously illegal but it’s also extremely dangerous. It can be a

real fire hazard. “It’s thanks to the information provided to us by a member of the community we were able to take the action we did and I hope this reassures people we will always listen to you. “Please keep coming to us with information, it really does make a difference to disrupting organised crime, safeguarding vulnerable people often trafficked or kept as slaves and to preventing the sale of illegal drugs in our communities.” If you have information about a suspected crime, you can call 101 or contact the police via their website. MP Chris backs campaign to help twins A MUM campaigning for a drug which could help her twin girls lead a normal life has won support from MP Chris Skidmore. Leanne Barnett's twin daughters Olivia and Ruby have rare genetic condition called phenylketonuria - known as PKU – which means their bodies can't break down protein properly. The girls, who are two, have to stick to such a strict diet it means every day life is fraught with anxiety. If the twins exceed their quota, their protein levels will rocket and long-term this can cause brain damage, learning difficulties, anxiety, depression and behavioural problems. Leanne, along with husband Peter, are campaigning for a drug called Kuvan to be made more widely available. The problem is that the drug is so expensive it is rarely available on the NHS. Leanne has been told it could cost £100,000 a year for both girls. Leanne, who lives in Kingswood, has now taken her case to MP Chris Skidmore as she hopes the government can put pressure on drug manufacturer BioMarin to make Kuvan more affordable to the

people with this rare condition. I really appreciated meeting with her and learning about the many challenges Leanne’s twin daughters and her family face every single day. “As a father myself, I can appreciate how hard it must be to raise children and have to deal with the impact of PKU at the same time. I look forward to supporting Leanne in her campaign to raise awareness of PKU and will be taking this up with my ministerial colleagues as soon as possible.” Leanne is encouraging people to sign a petition to reduce the cost of Kuvan. So far, more than 17,000 people have put their names to the petition, which was started by Gateshead mum Barbara McGovern whose son Archie has the condition.

Fifty quid for a haircut ... it's parking mad!

A MAN has been landed with a parking ticket even though he has parked in the same spot regularly for 24 years. Alistair Dawes, 55, has been visiting the Corner Chop barbers in High Street, Warmley for a trim every few weeks since 1995 and always parks in the same spaces, outside the Post Office in nearby Tower Road North. But he discovered he had fallen foul of the law when he returned to his car after his latest haircut. Awaiting Alistair was a Fixed Penalty Notice on his windscreen. When he checked for signs he discovered that a residents' parking scheme was in force. Alistair, who sells lorry and bus tyres, is not contesting the ticket as he knows he shouldn't have parked there but wants to warn other motorists. He said: “I couldn't believe it when I saw the parking ticket. I looked up for a sign and saw it said residents' parking and thought 'how long has that been there?' “I have patronised the same gentlemen’s barber in Warmley since it opened in 1995 and for the past twenty-four years have parked my car in the same spaces in Tower Road North outside the Post Office, a shop I have frequently used during that time. “I started getting my hair cut

when the current owner was the trainee. I would hazard a guess that I have spent somewhere in the region of £3,000 supporting the local business community in that shop alone in the last twenty-four years.” Alistair was told to cough up £35 within 14 days or his fine would go up to £70. “It's worked out at 50 quid for a haircut! I was only gone for 30 minutes. The ticket was timed at 12.41pm which was about the time I went to the barbers. The parking attendant must have seen me and could have wandered along to tell me that the spaces are residents' parking.” Knowing he couldn't contest the notice, Alistair immediately went into the Post Office to pay the fine. “It's ironic that you can pay the fine in the Post Office which is losing business because people can no longer park outside it,” he said. “The proprietor himself was very apologetic and explained that he and his family are at loggerheads with the council over this issue.” Alistair is from Keynsham but moved to Longwell Green in 1990 and started going to the Corner Chop a few years later. He was so happy with the service he received, he decided

to continue to use them when he moved to Brislington in 2005. “I want to inform other honest shoppers in Warmley not to fall foul of this greedy council. "I only hope that my £35 is spent by social services where it might help a senior citizen, a person with mental heath issues or a person with a physical disablement.” A spokesman for South Gloucestershire Council said: “Parking restrictions have been in place along Tower Road North since 2017, after concerns were raised by local residents about inappropriate parking blocking access to driveways and creating a road safety risk.

“The restrictions included a combination of double yellow lines, residents permit parking (Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm), plus a limited waiting restriction outside of the post office (limiting parking to 20 minutes between 8am to 6pm, Mondays to Saturdays – no return within an hour). Members of the public and local businesses were consulted and signs were put in place to make people aware of the restrictions.” The council has been reviewing waiting restrictions in the area. Feedback from the public will be considered before a final decision is made in the coming weeks.

The owners of five adjoining properties did respond and provided evidence from their title deeds that they had a private right to use the access way to reach the back of their houses. But the report said no statement had been lodged with the council to “refute any presumption of dedication”. Story by Local Democracy Reporting Service

Gift shop chosen for national campaign A HANHAM shop which sells gifts and souvenirs of Bristol will be placed in the national spotlight as part of a campaign to encourage people to support local businesses. Eclectic Gift Shop has been selected as one of 100 trailblazing small businesses in the official count-down to Small Business Saturday, which takes place across the UK on December 7. The shop, in the High Street, is one of this year’s ‘Small Biz 100’, a selection of 100 small businesses chosen for their vibrancy and diversity. In the 100 days running up to Small Business Saturday, the campaign will spotlight each of the Small Biz 100, as part of its mission to celebrate small business success and encourage the nation to 'shop local' and support British small businesses. This year’s Small Biz 100 features a range of independent businesses each contributing to their communities and offering something different. Eclectic Gift Shop was founded in 2017 by Nicola Bartlett and provides an outlet for the Bristol’s small, creative businesses to sell their work in east Bristol all year round. The shop also runs a workshop space suitable for children and adults. Nicola, who co-runs the shop with Maggie Cousins, said: “We’re passionate about supporting small, independent businesses. It's been a huge success and we're incredibly proud to work with around 60 Bristol-based makers.

Nicola, Maggie and Duffy outside Hanham's Eclectic Gift Shop “It amazes us that people come to us from all over Bristol and that they are buying things that are sent all over the world. We work with the widest range of makers spanning the city. Our customers love learning about all the small businesses we work so closely with. “We're building real relationships with our customers and we genuinely strive to make a real difference within our community. “We’re thrilled to be nationally recognised as one of the UK’s best small businesses. It’s great for Hanham in east Bristol, it really puts Hanham on the map. We have been overwhelmed by support from

our wonderful customers and had a wonderful time attending a Blue Tie evening reception in London. We’re looking forward to celebrating our success with other small businesses at the House of Lords in December.” Hanham High Street actively celebrates Small Business Saturday every year by holding its annual Christmas market on Small Business Saturday to encourage everyone to shop local and support their local high street. Director of Small Business Saturday, Michelle Ovens MBE said: “Small Business Saturday’s increasing popularity means it was harder than ever to choose just 100 of this country’s

incredible 5.6 million small businesses to showcase, but we believe those we have chosen are true representatives of the diverse, creative and inspiring heroes at the heart of our communities.” Last year Small Business Saturday saw an estimated £812 million spent in small businesses across the UK on the day, according to research commissioned by founder and principal supporter American Express. This was up from the £748 million spent on Small Business Saturday in 2017, with 59 per cent of people aware of the day saying they spent more than usual.

Three Crowns to be turned into flats THE conversion of the historic Three Crowns pub in St George into nine flats has been agreed. Councillors voted in favour of the scheme after planning officers recommended approval. Residents were hopeful of saving the pub after a successful bid by community group Save The Three Crowns to get the building on Blackswarth Road designated as an Asset of Community Value, which can offer some protection against development. But Bristol City Council's development control committee unanimously granted permission on September 25. Following the meeting Anthony Hannan, chair of Save The Three Crowns, described the decision as a “fait accompli”. “The 200 year history of the pub was over in less than 20 minutes. All 60 objections made by residents were dismissed. It's a stitch up. We feel the planning department didn't serve the interests of the community, just the interests of the developer. We just weren't listened to." Mr Hannan said he did not blame the councillors for their decision to support the scheme. “People are very negative toward the council but not towards the councillors. “They were pushed to approve the plans." he said. Bristol City Council has been approached for a comment.

The route takes them past the back of Conham River car park but after 100 yards or so the path ends as the river widens, forcing people up to the main Conham Road. As there is no path or pavement to the left, they have to cross the road to reach the pavement on the opposite side. They then have to walk a further 200 yards before they can cross back where the riverside footpath starts again. This poses an even worse danger because the entrance to the path, at the start of Crews

Hole Road, is opposite a blind bend. Annette, a physiotherapist, said: “There's a bit of cycle path missing so you have to use the footpath on the other side of the road. There's two points where you are forced to cross the road and there's no crossing at either point. “You have to rely on your ears because the part where you have to cross to pick up the river path again is on a blind bend. There's no way to see if there's an oncoming car. “For families, especially those who want to walk with a pushchair or pram or who are cycling with children on bikes, it's very dangerous. The road is meant to be 20mph but cars go much faster than that.” Annette, who is half English and half German, said the only reason there's not been an accident is, ironically, because it is so dangerous. “It's so obviously dangerous

Mum calls for action that people either avoid going there or are just so super, super careful and don't let go of their children's hands. It means it's very nerve-racking for people.” Annette said she believes the stretch is putting many families off enjoying the route. “I try to teach my son that you don't have to drive into town, you can cycle but the part where people have to cross the road will stop many people from doing that. It's dissecting Hanham from the rest of Bristol. “It's really beautiful here and more people should be able to experience it stress free. That's not the case at the moment.” Annette said there were a number of options the council could look at to make the route safer, including installing two sets of traffic lights or two zebra crossings. “The cheapest option would be to put a mirror up opposite the blind bend then people could see what was coming but it's not really an ideal situation.

“The council seems to find money to spend in other areas like Clifton. Just because we're on the outskirts doesn't mean we should have a lesser service. If the council wants to encourage cycling and get people to use the outdoors more, then they should be providing safe connections.” Until recently the route was even more perilous due to overhanging vegetation alongside the pavement, although this has now been cut back. Annette posted her dismay at the situation on the Facebook page Hanham Mums and received support for her campaign. One mum said: “I've been doing it for nine years, it's very dangerous...when I take kids along on bikes it's really dangerous to cross so I avoid now.” St George Troopers Hill councillor Fabian Breckels said: “Residents have approached me about the crossing at the end of Crews Hole Road and Conham

Annette des Forges at the danger spot on Conham Road Road and I have been trying to get officers to sort that out for some time. "At present I am having officers draw up a scheme of road markings and signage using Section 106 funds to make

Tasty treats for a good cause BOYS and girls from Hanham Abbots juniors and Samuel White's infants tucked into tasty treats during a fundraiser for Macmillan. The cake sale, which took place in the morning and after school, raised more than £400 for the cancer care charity. Rebecca Watson, from Friends of Hanham Primary Federation who organised the event, said: “Macmillan is a charity that has touched many of our school community in one way or another at some point. Macmillan is important to me personally as their nurses were involved in the care of my mum. It is wonderful that the school community raises funds so that Macmillan can continue to support individuals and their families through very difficult times. “It is also a great opportunity for parents to get together and meet over a cuppa and some delicious cake.”

An afternoon to remember FAMILIES raised £57.70 when staff at Christchurch pre-school held a Macmillan coffee afternoon. The event marked deputy manager Sacha Edwards' 30th birthday and chair Katie Gingell's 40th birthday. The coffee morning also provided an opportunity to remember a former parent who passed away last year. The pre-school is now looking forward to its Christmas fayre on Sunday December 1 from 2-4pm.

Maintenance boost for local schools SAMUEL White's infants and Cadbury Heath primary will benefit from a council investment to maintain their buildings. A total of £200,000 will be spent on curtain walling at Samuel White's, which will see an outer covering placed around the school to protect it from harsh weather. A further £135,000 will be spent on replacing the boiler plant and heating controls at Cadbury Heath Primary School. The projects are part of a series of maintenance improvements to school buildings at a number of primary schools across South Gloucestershire and includes new roofing, heating and water services, replacement electrical work and new windows. The investment totals more than £2 million in maintenance for this year and is part of a four-year programme of work totalling £7.5 million. Cabinet member for Schools, Skills and Employment Councillor Erica Williams said: “Improving educational standards in South Gloucestershire is our top priority and we want to make sure that our pupils have the best school facilities available that we are able to provide. These considerable improvements that are taking place at a number of primary schools across our area will help ensure that we are adequately prepared for the future.” All work will be carried out by the end of the year.

Bench in memory of Lee “THIS is for you, Lee Belgium we love you”. These were the poignant words of family, pupils and staff during a ceremony to unveil a 'superhero' bench in memory of the boy who died in April, aged eight. The carved wooden seat, with images of the Incredible Hulk and Captain America, was placed in a quiet grassed area of the playground at Park Primary School in Kingswood where Lee was a pupil. An online fundraising page was set up to buy a bench. His family, including mum Clare Boxall and dad Simon Belgium, pledged money towards the £1,500 bench and the target was soon reached. School head Lizzy Meadows said: “It is such a beautiful bench and a fitting memorial to Lee. It's a lovely place for children to reflect.”

Step inside Bristol's sixth form college

New leader at King's Oak

STUDENTS and staff at St Brendan’s Sixth Form College are settling in well to another year of post-16 life. As the only sixth form college in the region, St Brendan’s is a popular choice for learners who are ready to embrace the next step and this year welcomed a record number of new students. With over 1,000 16-17 year olds enrolling this September, it would seem St Brendan’s becoming ‘the place to be’ for young adults across Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire and beyond. With state-of-theart facilities and an impressive choice of A-level and Applied General subjects to choose from, the Brislington-based college is attracting students from far and wide and looks set to continue its growth into the new year. St Brendan’s boasts a huge

range of courses which are not available to students elsewhere. Amongst over 60 different subjects, the college provides students with a fantastic choice of languages and is consistently adding courses for linguists. St Brendan’s also offers a full choice of music courses to post-16 learners: an unusual find in today’s educational landscape. St Brendan’s also has its sights set firmly on developing its facilities further, for students to enjoy a first-class education. After their summer break, students returned to College to find a new suite of Mac computers and a transformed library space which now includes a university-style silent study zone. • Year 11 students and their families can find out more this month: see the advertisement below.

KING’S Oak Academy in Kingswood has started the academic year with a new man at the helm. Richard Clutterbuck, principal of the all-age school since January 2016, resigned in the summer and has been replaced by Dr Dan Nicholls. King's Oak which was judged as Good by Ofsted last year, is part of the Cabot Learning Federation and Dr Nicholls is the CLF’s director of education. In a statement, the CLF thanked Mr Clutterbuck for his hard work and commitment at King’s Oak, where he oversaw the successful transition from a secondary to an all-through academy, and said change from his insightfulness, integrity and good humour would be missed. “Under Dr Nicholls’ leadership, the academy has had a very positive start to the year, including a great deal of interest from parents of prospective new pupils interested in gaining a place for their child in next year’s Year 7 cohort,” the CLF statement said.

Turning back the clock TEENAGERS had a taste of life as a wartime soldier when the Somerset Light Infantry Group visited Downend School. Members of the re-enactment group ran an all-day event focusing on the Second World War from the perspective of ordinary people and local experiences. The group included members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, infantry and Home Guard, who stayed in character as they answered questions from the hundreds of pupils who got to meet them and find out about their story. Pupils were able to handle original wartime objects, try on kit, feel the weight of weapons and ammunition.

Fears over new primary school delay A NEW move is being made to get a secondary school for Lyde Green - but the provision of a second primary school seems to have been set back. This will be a blow to families on the estate, some of whom have to drive their children to primaries in Kingswood and Hanham because places are not available close to their homes. One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Voice that during the four years they have lived in the development, they have had to drive their children two and a half miles to a school where there is no public transport option, although they can see Lyde Green Primary from their back garden. They said: “The school issue affects so many of us in Lyde, and never seems to have been acknowledged or addressed.” SGS Academy Trust, whose bid for an all-through school for children aged four to 16 in Lyde

Green was turned down by the Department for Education earlier this year, is now seeking to open a secondary school. The trust intends to put in a bid under Wave 14 of the Government’s free school scheme in early November and if successful will open the school, to be named SGS Parkfield, on a six-hectare site at the north of Lyde Green, close to the former Parkfield colliery site. Kevin Hamblin, executive principal at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, which sponsors SGS Academy Trust, told the Voice that last year’s Wave 13 bid had been unsuccessful because South Gloucestershire was less of a priority that some other local authorities but that the criteria had changed for this year’s applications. “The new bid will respond to feedback by the Department of Education, who felt the primary phase of the previous bid was not

required at present," he said. A Wave 13 bid from Cabot Learning Federation for a new primary school in Warmley was successful. Town councillor Matt Palmer told the Voice that people living in Lyde Green, which was always due to have two primaries and a secondary school, had many

questions about the provision of school places. “Lyde Green is desperate for another primary school and a secondary school and the completion date of September 2022 is far too late." SGS is carrying out a consultation in advance of its application next month.

Councillors call for Warmley recycling depot to be moved away from local homes

COUNCILLORS have branded the location of a recycling depot in a residential area of Warmley as “totally unsuitable” and have demanded it be moved. Conservatives Sam and Elizabeth Bromiley, who represent the Parkwall and Warmley ward, are calling on South Gloucestershire Council to move the Cowhorn Hill depot to another location away from people's homes, claiming that moving the site, which stores dozens of recycling and waste collection lorries, would benefit the whole community. Elizabeth said: “Residents living near the Cowhorn Hill site have told us many times about the disruption that is caused by dozens of large waste vehicles coming in and out every day, and how unbearable the resulting

Sam and Elizabeth outside the depot noise from early morning horn testing and smell of residual waste can be. “We want something to be done to make life easier for these residents and that starts with moving this depot somewhere else.”

South Gloucestershire Council is currently considering its new Waste Strategy, with plans out to public consultation on how services can improve record high levels of recycling collection, currently nearing 60 per cent following the introduction of

weekly collections in 2017. While the Cowhorn Hill site, based at Tower Road South, is not directly part of the consultation, the pair have said that considering this in the outcomes should be a priority. Sam said: “As a council we have worked hard to deliver quality recycling services that have been fully supported by residents across South Gloucestershire. As a result, we need to make sure we are supporting residents and making sure there are no adverse effects to these services. “There must be a better alternative to store the vehicles than this totally unsuitable location, which has resulted in such a frustrating situation for those living nearby.”

Fry's fire engine is back on home ground A FIRE engine commissioned to service the former Fry’s chocolate factory has returned to Keynsham after 37 years. The fire engine, a 1965 Morris FGK40, served the factory under Chief Fire Officer Des Ryan GIFE from 1965 to 1982. In 1968 it helped pump water from different parts the factory during the Great Flood, which allowed production to keep running, and its crew also provided support to the affected residents of Keynsham and Saltford. When the vehicle was decommissioned in 1982 it was sold to the Patrick Motor Collection in Birmingham, where it stayed before being sold again in 1992. Des Ryan’s sons, Richard and Stephen, spent years tracking it down and found it again in 2003, two years after their father’s death. They kept in contact with the owner, who had preserved it and kept it fully operational. Fast forward to today and the fire engine has returned into the ownership of the Ryan

family. To mark its return home, it was put on display at Avon Valley Railway’s 1940s weekend on Saturday September 21 alongside the Fry’s Sentinel Steam Engine. Four members of the original Fry’s Fire Brigade, Dennis Salter, Jack Chapman, Max Packer and Terry Seymour, also turned out to see it. Richard said: “The four former members

of the original Fry’s Fire Brigade were all emotional and delighted to see the fire engine again. They said it was nice to have a piece of Fry’s history back In Keynsham and they enjoyed talking about the fire engine to visitors at the Avon Valley Railway 1940s weekend. “It is marvellous to finally have the fire engine back in Keynsham and in our possession especially as our father was so proud of both the fire engine and the fire brigade during his time at Fry’s.” The fire engine will be back on its home turf at Somerdale, now The Chocolate Quarter, on Sunday October 6 for the Keynsham 10K, which is being held in aid of the charity Empire Fighting Chance. The family has a number of photos from the fire engine’s heyday, some of which are shared here. Richard is interested in hearing from anyone who has stories, photos or relatives that worked with the fire engine or fire brigade at Fry’s so he can add to the archive. Children's joy in reading is rocketing CHILDREN at Kingswood Library were among the thousands of youngsters who took part in 20th annual summer reading challenge To celebrate the successful completion of the 2019 initiative, children gathered at the library, which is now housed in the Civic Centre, and were presented with medals and certificates for reading six books through the summer months. The national event was delivered by South Gloucestershire Council’s libraries service with the theme of this year’s challenge being ‘Space Chase’, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landings. Cllr June Bamford, vice chair of South Gloucestershire Council and Hanham ward councillor, attended the ceremony to present medals and certificates to the children and volunteers. She said: “I’m really pleased to have had the opportunity to present the children and volunteers with their medals and certificates this evening. The summer reading challenge is a fantastic scheme which inspires children to read for pleasure, as well as developing their reading skills and confidence so that they return to school ready

Callum Boulton, one of the children involved, said: “I enjoyed reading books, joining in the activities, face painting and I enjoyed the lunches at the library and met some new friends.”

O

MY name is Penny Waller, I am a retired nurse specialist, a mum and a grandmother and live in Longwell Green. I am part of several generations who have contributed to the increase in carbon emissions and the mountains of single use plastics that litter the countryside and cause so many problems for wildlife in our waterways and oceans. It’s easy to feel swamped by the enormity of the effects of global warming on our planet and difficult to comprehend the consequences for mankind but the message is that we are globally in a big mess but there is still time to do something about it if we ALL take action NOW! As a Christian I believe that God asks us to look after His creation, but whatever our beliefs, age, gender and skin colour we all have something in common – we are ‘earthlings’ and we all have it within our power to make changes that will begin to reverse the damage that the human race has done to planet earth and make it a safer and healthier environment for generations to come. Two people have really inspired me to act now and change those things that are within my power to

change - David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg. I found the clip from “Climate Change – the Facts” alarming but also empowering. Take a look by visiting https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p076w7g5 I have started a community campaign, called Unicycles, in the hope that others may feel inspired to join me. Working in an organised way my goals for the first 12 months are as follows: • To identify those things that we can all change in our day to day lives and empower people to make those changes. • To start recycling recyclable products that are not accepted in the kerbside collections. For example, through an organisation called Terracycle I am currently recycling plastic straws. • To find places to plant trees – planting trees is one of the most effective ways to reduce our carbon footprint; trees gobble up carbon and give off oxygen and other things that enhance our environment. • To raise community awareness through public information bulletins and updates.

The free event, which takes place from 10.30am-12pm, offers a chance for people to meet with their neighbours and catch up on what is happening in the area. It is aimed at helping people build relationships with likeminded people who live locally. Mark Baker, co-chief executive of Age UK Bristol said: Our CAF partners have all contributed so much time and effort into making this year’s festival a success, we’re all looking forward to welcoming the community to these events and celebrating everyone’s hard work.” The festival launched with an opening event on Tuesday October 1 at The Station near Bristol city centre where a variety of groups and organisations ran stalls and offered free refreshments. n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Afternoon WI IT is that time in the calendar again for the members of our group to enjoy the fruits of the season harvest. Approximately 60 members supported and enjoyed a leisurely two course harvest lunch at our September meeting, made possible and with thanks to a group of ladies hard work earlier in the day. The hall had been beautifully set out with flowers on tables which had already been decorated in autumn colours. Following a very satisfying lunch, each table was given a confectionery-based quiz, which kept everyone amused. Despite some copying between tables to get answers, the prizes were awarded to two tables who had tied in the final results. The afternoon was rounded off with our very successful bring and buy harvest fruit and vegetable produce sale. We are now looking forward

to our next members' meeting entitled “How to Keep your Money Safe”. New Members are always welcome and if you would like to join us we shall be meeting on October 14 (second Monday every month) in Hanham Community Centre at 1.30pm. For more information please contact Liz on 0117 961 1583.

Hanham Evening WI YOU start to realise that autumn is on its way when thoughts turn to harvest festival, and that was the way our latest meeting got underway. Members were urged to bring along items for the annual bring and buy harvest festival fundraising stall and they did not disappoint. We ended up with a lovely variety of goods such as home-grown tomatoes, apples, marrows and other surplus goods from their gardens. The harvest festival theme continued through the evening’s speaker, Chris Westgate, who was from Heavenly Hedgerows.

Chris explained how her company specialises in foraging in hedgerows picking all sorts of hips and berries to make produce such as jams and jellies. She told us she chops everything by hand, not machinery, then cooks and bottles it all herself. She also makes alcoholic beverages, specialising in sloe gins. Chris told us how she then markets and sells her produce through a variety of outlets such as country fairs, on-line and to a hotel chain. To help illustrate her works Chris brought along a display of her produce to sell but unfortunately this did not include the alcoholic type as she didn’t have a licence to sell it that evening. Never mind perhaps next time! Members were reminded of two forthcoming events. Firstly, the autumn group entertainment evening is fast approaching. It will take place on Friday October 4 and nearly 100 tickets have already been sold. It promises to be an evening of hilarious and exhilarating entertainment with the male voice choir with a difference, the Magnificent AK 47– a totally unforgettable experience is promised. Secondly the annual autumn fayre is being held on November 11. Arrangements are well underway and members made a note of the date in their diaries. Dianna Coles

Mangotsfield WI WHAT a marvellous meeting we had in September, we were visited by Andy Stowe from East Bristol Auction Rooms. Andy gave us a talk about the antique world and then we were able to participate in the talk with some of our own antiques. Although my mum was there, I did take something else too. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and as always a great attendance with members and visitors. October brings the annual meeting. Along with the May Resolutions meeting, this is a very important meeting for the members when we ‘swear in’ the president, secretary and treasurer along with the committee members. If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings, you do not need to know anyone. We will welcome you and assign a WI member to guide you through the evening. You will be able to enjoy a cuppa and start making new friends. I guarantee you will be offered the best cake ever, you may learn a new skill too. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us, email mangotsfieldwi@gmail.com; our website is www.mangotsfieldwi. org.uk or you can Like our Facebook page Kate Tarr

Jane finds more remarkable Bristol women AN AUTHOR who shone the light on more than 200 remarkable women from Bristol's past is about to release her follow up book. Jane Duffus was overwhelmed with the success of The Women Who Built Bristol which was published last year, supported by a series of talks and events across the area. She had been fed up hearing about the great men who shaped the city, noticing that all but one of Bristol's statues were of men, and the one who was female was a goddess – not even a real woman. Her original book set about addressing this disservice in the form of a compendium of 250 great women who contributed to the city's rich history, including reformer Mary Carpenter, suffragette Annie Kenney and haematologist Janet Vaughan. Jane's second volume is released on October 21 by publisher Tangent and features 250 new stories of inspiring women. The women may have been born in Bristol, died here or lived in the city for a bit, with Jane's only rule that they must no longer be alive. Jane, who lives in Bedminster, said: “I’ve tried to leave no stone unturned in my quest to represent women from all walks of life who contributed something - no matter how small - to the Bristol we live in today. “Through researching two volumes of The Women Who Built Bristol, I’ve uncovered the overlooked stories of more than

More women kept coming out of the woodwork and they were too good to keep to myself.” Jane said the second book offers some surprise characters: automobile “The book features a brand new set of 250 amazing, but largely overlooked, women from Bristol’s history and, by virtue of being the second book and the obvious characters mostly being swallowed up by volume one, includes, to my mind, a much more interesting and

Jane Duffus tells us about a Longwell Green go-getter who made a fortune making sure rail passengers didn't go hungry. The business of providing refreshments to train travellers had to begin somewhere. And in mid-Victorian Bristol, it was given a head start by Ellen Jefferies (1837-1917). She was so successful in her business that, by the time of her death in 1917, her estate was valued at £58,000, equivalent to almost £3.5 million today. Ellen lived at Harefield Hall on Bath Road, a grand estate near Longwell Green which she had been able to afford thanks to her own hard work. This was a plush 14-room property with more than 250 acres of land, and was a fitting home for a self-made success story. She was also a member of the Longwell Green Parish Council and, upon hearing complaints from residents about how hazardous the evening walk between Hanham and Longwell Green was, she paid for oil lamps to be erected on the route. On another occasion, Ellen donated the trees that now stand on Bath Road, which became known as the Coronation Trees.

lady who climbed to the top of St Nicholas’ Church spire, from the rebel librarian who campaigned for votes for women to the first ever Bristolian to win an Olympic gold medal - they’re all stars in Volume Two. In fact Jane discovered so many interesting figures she was forced to leave some out. “I already have more than 150 on my list should Volume Three ever happen,” she said. Model brings back memories THE work of Hanham artist Jack Grunwell is featured in an exhibition at Kingswood Heritage Museum. Now 94, Jack spent much of his leisure time recording the sights of Kingswood and Bristol, like the Llandoger Trow and Pip 'n' Jay, in the form of miniatures, both paintings and threedimensional models. Jack was born in 1925 and called up for National Service in 1943. As a Quaker, he was a conscientious objector, so was put to work in the Friends' Ambulance Unit, and saw service in China, amongst other theatres of war. After hostilities ceased, he trained as a state registered nurse at Leeds General Infirmary, playing rugby union for Yarnbury Rugby Football Club. Jack then studied ophthalmic nursing at Bristol Eye Hospital. After gaining experience elsewhere, including a period as a nurse tutor in Middlesbrough,

he was appointed a nurse practitioner at Kingswood Training School in 1953. He was thus responsible for the welfare of 500 boys at any one time, and he estimates that in his 40 years at the school more than 20,000 boys passed through the school's assessment centre. The centrepiece of the exhibition is Jack's model of Kingswood Training School,

Quarry Court

which was build in 1952. The museum was honoured recently by a visit from the artist himself. He is pictured in front of the exhibition with his model of the training school. Jack joked: “I’m a proud Yorkshireman, so I preferred making miniatures because they used less paint and less paper, so were cheaper.” Photo courtesy of Kingswood Heritage Museum

Flu is no EU problem with a jab

I

0117 9322293 24 Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9BA Column by Jess Williams of Ellacombe Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being whilst also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care

T’S time to go into Ellacombe Pharmacy, roll your sleeve up and come in for your free NHS flu jab. With no appointment needed, anyone who is over 18, a carer, works with or close contact of anyone at risk of getting flu or in particular health group can just come in to get protected. These include anyone: • aged 65 years and over (including those becoming age 65 years by March 31, 2020; • with a weakened immune system (HIV/AIDS, cancer treatment) • with certain medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, Parkinson’s disease or motor neurone disease ) • all pregnant women • all unpaid and paid carers for an elderly or disabled person • people 18 or over living in longstay residential care homes or other long-stay care facilities • paid social care and hospice

workers • paid nursing home care workers • household contacts of a person with a weakened immune system (cancer treatment) • with a chronic liver or kidney disease This year we are particularly keen to increase update of the FREE jab among pregnant women, unpaid carers, family contacts of immunocompromised patients, paid nursing home and social care workers. Flu jab in October? I am still in shorts and T-shirt! Early vaccination is encouraged because it takes about two weeks after the jab to gain optimal protection. The flu strains can change from year to year, so you need to have a flu vaccination every year. Each year, in the UK, up to 10,000 deaths are attributable to flu, particularly among the elderly population and those with existing medical conditions.

Well, I never get flu! Even if you only get a mild reaction to a flu virus, you can still pass it on to others. To attain what is termed ‘‘herd immunity’’ – vaccinating enough of the population to protect us all - your jab counts; it protects you and contributes to protecting everyone else, including the elderly, vulnerable and pregnant women in our community. Deal or No-deal, flu is No EU problem. Go and get your jab today and better still, take your partner or friend along too. Remember, the Ellacombe Pharmacy walk-in service means you can turn up, get your jab and that’s it for this year. We will even notify your GP surgery for you. No appointments, no delays and alongside our low-cost travel vaccination service, we also offer private flu jabs. As with previous years, stock will run out early so do not delay.

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Cash to back up vigilance on green belt

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

AS someone who has always campaigned in support of our precious local green belt, I am delighted that in the last few weeks it has been announced that our area is set to benefit from a share of nearly £2 million to crack down on illegal developments on the local green belt. A total of £50,000 will pay for improvements to the planning enforcement section of South Gloucestershire Council’s website to improve the quality of information provided by the public, freeing up resources to specifically target the green belt issues in areas like Hanham and Longwell Green. Unlike some councils, South Gloucestershire Council’s planning enforcement service investigates all complaints received from members of the public.

But the planning constraints that apply to an area of land are not always clear – such as where the green belt boundary starts and ends. This means that an unquantified amount of unauthorised development activity within the green belt may be missed, because our community are unaware of where the green belt is and what is unlawful development. Further, valuable professional resources are tied up in determining whether a complaint is valid, reducing capacity to deal with genuine breaches. The funding will help councils like South Gloucestershire be vigilant against rogue developers, giving the areas with the highest levels of green belt the funds needed to introduce new technology that will help throw the book at those rogue

developers who build illegally. And we have to be vigilant in areas like Hanham and Longwell Green. We have in the past fought proposed development on the Hanham Hills and I continue to be opposed to building on Hanham Cricket Ground. We should always focus building on unused brownfield land, which is why I am pressing Homes England to bring forward the redevelopment of the former Kleeneze site in Hanham. Conservatives know that once the green belt is built on it’s often gone for good that’s why only we can be trusted to protect it. The public in South Gloucestershire have told us loud and clear they want it kept for future generations to enjoy. I will continue to support efforts to protect our green belt as I have always done since before even being elected.

Photo copyright of South Gloucestershire Gazette, courtesy Kingswood Heritage Museum FORTY years ago in 1979, the Chequers Inn at Hanham Mills was in some difficulty, at least with its car parking! Originally developed from a private house built at the beginning of the twentieth century, nowadays it is a thriving pub/restaurant in a very picturesque location.

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY OUR September topic was entitled ‘Chocolate Dinosaurs’. Hugh and Mike (both ex JS Fry) told us how chocolate is made. Originally from central America and now sourced from equatorial areas world-wide, the cocoa tree grows shaded by taller trees. The pod contains pulp and 35-40 beans which are removed and fermented together for a few days when the beans are separated and exported. Beans are then roasted and ‘rubbed’ to produce ‘nibs’ that are ready to process into the various forms of chocolate. We heard about the establishment and expansion of JS Fry from the purchase of the patent in 1761, the establishment of the factory in Union Street, central Bristol in 1777, the move to Somerdale in 1923 and eventual closure in 2011. We were able to examine the raw products and sample the finished ones! In late August we visited the conservation centre for the Newport Medieval Ship. This large fifteenth century sailing vessel was discovered in 2002 buried in the bank of the river Usk at Newport (Gwent), having apparently foundered there whilst under repair in circa 1466. Conservation is nearing completion and a great deal of exciting information has been learned about the ship and its origins and now a new, permanent home is being sought for its continued exhibition. Whilst in the neighbourhood we visited the Newport Transporter Bridge which is the lowest crossing on the River Usk. It is a Grade I listed structure and is one of only two operational transporter bridges in Britain. It was designed by French engineer Ferdinand Arnodin and constructed in 1906. We enjoyed traversing the river in the bridge's suspended gondola and the more energetic of our party also took the opportunity to climb the towers and walk across the upper deck of the bridge. We also enjoyed the commanding view from the control room which contains the winding gear and electric motors. Two fantastic venues visited in one excursion – a grand day out! Our topic on October 1 will be the history and future of Birnbeck Pier in Weston-Super-Mare - surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month (March-December) at 7.30pm, in the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road, opposite the Civic Centre). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www. kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including refreshments. Annual subscription is only £20.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Understanding hate crime

L

AST month, along with Avon Fire & Rescue, we opened our doors to your emergency services for our annual open day. Thankfully, the weather was kind to us and local people enjoyed displays from Avon and Somerset’s Police Dog, Mounted, Firearms section as well as car cutting and search and rescue demonstrations from Avon Fire and Rescue. It was wonderful to see families getting an insight into all aspects of our emergency services and the people who work so hard to keep our communities safe. This month, I will be working alongside Avon and Somerset Police and partners to increase local people’s understanding of hate crime to mark National Hate Crime Awareness Week (October 12-19). Hate crime can be defined as ‘any criminal offence that is perceived by the victim or any other person to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards

someone based on personal characteristics’. Although hate crime is being spoken about more and more in the media and on social media, there is still confusion about the offence and when to report it and, as a result, underreporting continues to be an issue for victims of hate crime, particularly those related to religion, disability and sexual orientation. Our homes and our streets should be a place free from discrimination, intolerance and prejudice and that’s why it’s important we are firm in our message that hate has no home in our communities. If you’ve been a victim of hate crime you are not alone and please remember that there are people who can help. Only by working together can we show that hate crime will not be tolerated and offenders will be brought to justice. Finally, I wanted to let you

know about the reduction in the number of serious injury collisions on our roads across the area of more than 21 per cent. In 2018, there were 393 incidents where people were killed or seriously injured in collisions on the road compared to 478 in 2014, making Avon and Somerset Police the 9th most improved force for reducing the number of people involved in such collisions. Although one life lost in a collision is one too many, thanks to the dedication of the Roads Policing Unit, our roads are becoming increasingly safer for all road users. The Constabulary help organise and deliver voluntary speeding education courses to approximately 140,000 drivers each year and the unit is also supported by local people through the brilliant 131 Community Speedwatch schemes across the area. Since 2014, I have also ensured that the unit has been

24 HOUR LOCKSMITH & DOUBLE GLAZING REPAIRS Dale Clements

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens better equipped to keep our roads safer by purchasing three enforcement motorcycles to support the nine speed enforcement vans as well as acquiring speed cameras from local authorities. We will continue to work with our local partners to keep our roads safe and educate local people on the dangers of driving unsafely.

Ryan qualifies for championships A STUDENT from Hanham Woods Academy has won a place in the national go karting championship at Stoke-on-Trent. Ryan Fisher qualified by competing in three heats and winning pole position for the final at his local track in Avonmouth. Ryan fought back from a five second gap between him and the race lead to narrowly miss out on first place at the chequered flag. His second ranking, however, was enough to earn him a place in the finals. The Year 8 student, who has only been racing since 2017, said: “I didn’t think before the competition I could achieve this, I am absolutely amazed and really excited about competing in the national championships.” Steve Kneller, principal of Hanham Woods Academy said: “This is an incredible achievement for Ryan, we would like to congratulate him and wish him good luck for the national championships.” The national final of KartChamps 2019 will take place on October 25. Match reports 14/9/19 Gloucestershire County League game BROMLEY Heath United have still to get off the mark with a win and went down by the odd goal against today’s visitors Hanham Athletic. Neither team could find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes but the deadlock was broken 5 minutes into the second half when Hanham’s Connor Hartley skipped past four defenders slipped the ball to Jamie Fry who hit a tremendous shot into the top corner. Bromley Heath had numerous attempts on goal throughout the game but failed to hit the back of the net mainly due to an outstanding display by the Hanham keeper Ashley Bamford. 21/9/19 Gloucestershire

kick from Luke Brown.

A SECOND visit in two weeks to Hanham Athletic for Ruardean Hill Rangers this time it was a league match. It was the home side who went close after 12 minutes when Connor Hartley broke into the box but then saw his shot go agonisingly wide. Rangers opened the scoring on 21 minutes with a brilliant shot from striker Luke Johnson the first of his three goals of the afternoon. Within a minute the home side were level when Luke Corbiere found space in the box to knock the ball past Underwood. Rangers retook the lead on 35 minutes when Johnson turned in a great cross from Luke Brown. Hanham were unlucky on 55 minutes when Jack Fry’s header came back of the bar. Rangers grabbed all three points on 75 minutes when Luke Johnson completed his hattrick when he turned in a free

The Hanham Vets kicked off their season on September 14 with a 5-1 defeat by cross court but bounced back on Saturday defeating Yate 4-1. Hanham Reserves played their first game of the season on Saturday September 9, falling to a 4-2 defeat by Totterdown.

n FRYS BOWLS CLUB Thursday August 22: The curtain came down on the Bristol and District League season with Frys traveling to Henleaze 'A', with the home side needing at least 5 points to avoid relegation. The night got off to a perfect start with Henleaze pulling out big leads in the opening ends on rinks 1 and 2. Frys were able to counter on rink 3, but with rinks 1 and 2 continuing to drop shots, the gap couldn't be overcome. After halfway, rink 2 started to pull a few shots back, and put themselves in positions to quickly close their deficit. However, Henleaze skip was able to minimise the threats and preserve Henleaze lead. Henleaze were able to close out the game from there on, as they picked up 8 points from the 66-41 win, and with Long Ashton losing 9-1 against Yate 'A', Henleaze secured their division 2 status, with Long Ashton joining BAC in division 3. Meanwhile at the top, Knowle 'A' won the division with Yate 'A' joining them in division 1. 2 points for Frys saw them drop to 6th in the league.
