Homes plan provokes traffic fears
RESIDENTS have given a mixed reaction to plans to build 77 homes on open space at Greenbank Road in Hanham. They gave their views at an exhibition of the proposals ahead of a planning application being submitted to South Gloucestershire Council. Although some thought the scheme was more sympathetic
than they had expected, others said Greenbank Road was too narrow to take the extra traffic and would make the road more hazardous. There were also concerns about the pressure on local
schools and GP practices. The land - in between the Church of Ascension and AEK Boco Football Club - had been owned by the House of Faith but was sold to land developer Turn to Page 2

Woman flees after grab bid A WOMAN in her 20s fled after a man tried to grab her as she walked along the path at Hanham Mount. Police are appealing for witnesses to what they describe as a "suspcious incident" which took place at around 12.45am on Saturday July 29 near to Gunning Close. As the man attempted to grab hold of the woman, she ran off and sought shelter in a house nearby. The Hanham Mount path runs between Quarry Road in Kingswood and Mount Hill Road, Hanham. The man is described as white, around 6ft, of generally slim build but with a large stomach and aged in his 30s or 40s. He was clean shaven and wore a dark coloured tracksuit. Anyone who saw anything suspicious, or who recognises the description, is asked to call 101 with the reference 5217172873.

I don't mind them building homes but they've got to sort the road out." Carol Bryant, also of Woodyleaze Drive, said: "77 homes will mean at least 77 extra cars using Greenbank Road and that's a lot more traffic. I really don't think they've thought this through properly. They need to do a lot more thinking." Mum-of-two Louise Hartree, of nearby Kelston Grove, said she was concerned about pressure on school places. "I'm worried about school spaces as it could affect my daughter getting into our local secondary school. Schools in the area are already oversubcribed and 77 family homes will mean a lot of extra children needing
places at local schools." But Jennifer Summers, who grew up on Greenbank Road but now lives in nearby Court Road, was supportive of the proposals: "I was expecting the homes to look cramped but I was pleasantly surprised to see they weren't cramming them in like some other schemes. "Cars come speeding from Hollyguest Road down into Greenbank Road so it's good they are including provisions to try to stop that."

Water main burst affects 35,000 PEOPLE living in Hanham, Longwell Green, Bitton and Willsbrige were among those affected when a burst water main left thousands of households without water. Bristol Water described it as "one of the biggest incidents in our history". The water main burst in Willsbridge at about midnight on Tuesday July 18, causing chaos with an estimated 35,000 homes left without water. Schools were forced to close and community organisations were turned away from their usual venues. Most schools reopened on July 20, although some in Keynsham remained closed the following day. Bristol Water set up a bowser in Longwell Green after complaints of the lack of emergency water supplies in the area. Other bowsers were set up in Ashton Way and Waitrose car park in Keynsham. Supply was returned on July 20 with Bristol Water saying customers may experience cloudy water or discolouration but this would clear if taps were left running for a couple of minutes. A Bristol Water spokesman said: "This has been one of the biggest incidents in our history. "Thank you to everyone in the community who rallied around supporting each other to get water to those who needed it. We appreciate this was a difficult situation and we know how important water is to your everyday life."

A PARK and ride at Lyde Green has opened to help ring-road commuters. Drivers from the Kingswood area who are travelling to Bristol's so-called northern fringe are being encouraged to park and share cars, park and cycle or park and take the 18 bus, which goes around the including UWE, Parkway, Filton and Southmead Hospital. n NEWS A PROJECT in Cadbury Heath is succeeding in making sure children don’t go hungry in the school holidays. Fit and Fed provides free lunch and sporting activities three days a week - and its popularity is growing. It started in the Easter holidays, then ran at the May half term and is now operating three days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) for the six-week summer break. Deb Wright, who runs the scheme for the Juice Project at Cadbury Heath Hall with the help of volunteers, said numbers are increasing as word gets round about the provision. “We made 49 meals in the first week of the summer holidays and were at capacity on the first day of the second week - we made meals for 25 children and ten helpers,” she said. “Many of our volunteers are teenagers who have come through the StreetGames initiative; they have proved to be exceptional and we couldn’t manage without them. “I started as a volunteer but have now been taken on one day a week to oversee this and other wellbeing projects in Cadbury Heath.” After a sit-down meal, the children and volunteers take part in a variety of games and sports in the park including football, swingball, badminton and rounders. StreetGames coach Emily Rose, 18, said the project was rewarding for both volunteers and children. “It can be boring if your parents are at work so this gives them something to do,” she said. Fellow volunteer Jemima Suffolk also welcomes the opportunity to provide holiday activities for children. Her day job is a Police Community Support Officer.
Team are totally devoted to ending holiday hunger “It is important to give children positive things to do when they are young; it can help them keep out of trouble. This project gives them a focus.” Community members have come forward to volunteer with Fit and Fed but Deb would still like to hear from more people who would be able to help prepare food for the children. Parents can book their children (aged eight and above) on to Fit and Fed by calling in to the Juice Project on Mondays or Fridays or the hall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The need for the project is emphasised by the latest figures from the Trussell Trust charity, which runs more than 420 food banks across the UK. It says families with children of primary school age are the most likely to need emergency food help, especially in the summer. Samantha Stapley, of the trust, said: "We welcome the government's decision to maintain free school lunches for children during term time - the next step must be to help families during the holidays. "Food banks are doing more than ever before, but voluntary organisations alone cannot stop primary school children facing hunger." There were 4 million children living in poverty in the UK in 2014-15, an increase of 200,000 on the previous year. This means 30% of children, or nine pupils in every classroom of 30 pupils, are officially poor.

Church supports Grenfell PEOPLE from St Augustine’s Catholic Church in Downend have rallied to support victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. Led by Simon Pomphrey from Keynsham, they collected donations of women’s toiletries and drove them to London, dropping the haul at Notting Hill Methodist church in the shadow of the tower. Simon said:“The vicar and parishioners were lovely and send their love and thanks and are going to write to us. The church was filled to the gills and couldn't take any more.” People from Grenfell Tower have had the chance to choose whatever products they need from the selection, then the church will sell the remaining toiletries with all the money raised being given to a fund for the residents.

The medal marvels MEMBERS of a Longwell Green gymnastics club have a spring in their step after tasting success at a recent British championships. Girls from Majestics Gymnastics emerged triumphant after travelling to Liverpool's Echo Arena to take part in the 2017 TeamGym British Championships.
Two teams achieved British medals with two other teams achieving fifth and six place. Michelle Prideaux, who co-directs the club with Candice Fry, said: "They performed on floor, vault, trampette and tumble track against the top qualifying teams in the country from a qualifying competition in

n NEWS Fixing roads to cope with extra rainfall FLOODING in Cherry Gardens Road in Bitton should soon be a thing of the past. The Government has agreed to pay to upgrade the drainage system before March next year so the A4175 road can cope better with heavy rainfall. It is one of nine roads in South Gloucestershire and one in Bristol that have been awarded a total of ÂŁ3.4 million from the Challenge Fund to install more modern drainage. The idea is that it will save money eventually by reducing the need to repair roads that flood regularly. The work will also include new technology that will help the council to monitor rainfall and water levels. Other roads where work will be carried out include Abson Road, Pucklechurch and the A420 High Street in Wick and the A 431 at Swineford.

Staff at Longwell Green Community Centre stepped in so Jason Pimm could tie the knot with Louise Holbrook before he became too ill. They set up a Just Giving page and were inundated with offers of money, help and support, which meant the Kingswood couple's wedding could go ahead on July 22. "So we decided to do a family fundraising day as the time scale is now shorter rather than longer. It's about raising funds for those bucket list things that Jason wants to do like take the children on day trips and spend time together as a family." Jason, 46, and Louise, 37, had

to make dreams come true originally visited the community centre to look at rooms for his 46th birthday party. "They wanted to get all the family together for what would probably be his last birthday celebrations," Alison said. "They went home and within a few hours they rang back to say they had decided to get married and could we accommodate it." Although the centre wasn't an approved venue for the actual marriage, Alison said she would look into it to see what could be done. It was arranged that the couple could have the wedding blessed at the centre but would need to do the formalities at Kingswood Civic Centre a few days later. Alison said: "The family explained that all Jason's treatment had been funded by themselves and they didn't have a big budget for the wedding. I became a wedding organiser overnight! I started looking at wedding sites to get ideas
for styling the rooms and put a message out on Facebook to ask if anyone could help with decorations." What happened next astounded Alison and her colleagues. "Within hours the message had been shared thousands of times. It literally went viral, going out to 64,000 people!" A shop worker from Tesco in Longwell Green saw the message and suggested to Alison about setting up a Just Giving page to fundraise for the wedding, even giving up her time to help the centre set one up. The page raised £1,310 with other offers of flowers, wedding cars, table decorations and photography coming in from the Facebook message. "Social media went ballistic and my phone didn't stop ringing. Everyone could see what a genuine story it was and how the community centre was trying to help," said Alison. Support also came in from

the Mustard Tree Community Church in Longwell Green. "They were amazing with many members of the church giving monetary donations and people who didn't want to be named paying for fresh flowers." Alison said it was extraordinary how the community has responded. "There were so many people out there who just wanted Jason and Louise to have their special day. " It proves that the community out there has got a heart. It's amazing to think that what started with me trawling through the internet to search for decorations has resulted in such a special day for Jason and Louise." Tickets for the Daz Rocks for Jay evening event cost £5 and can be purchased from the community centre. Entry to the fun day is free. Stalls cost £10 and you can book a place by calling the community centre on 0117 932 3722.

Farm shop owner hangs up her apron after 42 years
Jean, aged 19, outside the cowsheds in 1962, left, and right, behind the counter in the farm shop TURNER'S Farm Shop in Siston Common is closing its doors for the last time, marking the end of an era for owner Jean Turner and her family, who have been at the heart of the local community for 42 years. Opened in 1975 by Jean, her husband Robert and brother Mervin Bennett, a local baker, Turner’s has become known for its range of local produce, cakes, cheesecakes and pickles, which Jean and her family make themselves. Looking back at the history of the Turner family farm and farm shop, Jean’s daughter Caroline says: “Bridge House Farm has been in our family for 76 years, after my grandad, Jack Turner, purchased it in 1941. When Grandad retired in 1975, my Dad started selling potatoes to chip shops across Bristol, before he started the farm shop with Mum and Mervin, where they sold just a box of apples and oranges to start with. As each week passed they starting selling a little bit more, more fruit and more vegetables, and it just grew and grew from there. “Back then, there weren’t huge supermarkets around, and so the farm shop became a key part of the local community –
everyone knew each other. I have fond memories of my brother, sister and I as children going to help in the shop on Saturday mornings, lifting crates and topping up the shelves – a strong work ethic was certainly instilled in us from a young age and we are definitely a family of grafters! As Mum always used to say, ‘don’t put off 'til tomorrow what you could do today’, which is a lesson that we have certainly all lived by.” Following Robert’s death in August 2014, Jean’s children encouraged her to take time to reflect and think about the future of the farm shop, which she has carried on running with the support of Mervin, who is now 80. After some careful consideration, it was announced on Facebook on Friday July 21 that Turner’s would be closing, and Jean and her family have since been inundated with well wishes from customers, many who have shopped there for years. On Saturday July 29, the farm shop invited customers to celebrate the last 42 years at a final ‘sale of produce’, giving them their last opportunity to take home some of their favourites before the gates
close for good. Following her retirement, Jean plans to enjoy some well deserved rest and relaxation, and spend time with her Jack Russell alongside baking, reading and catching up with friends. Caroline says: “Since announcing the closure of the farm shop, we have received so many lovely comments from our customers, both recent ones and those from years gone by. A lot of people have emigrated, but still have lots of lovely memories of Mum and Merv talking to them in the shop – the sense of community spirit and having a
conversation with people was so important to them while running it. “The closure of the farm shop has had a huge emotional effect on Mum and our family as a whole, and we are so grateful for people’s support. At 74 years old and having worked for most of her life, it’s been really hard for her to think about retiring, but after serving the community for so many years now is the time for her to potter, have some time to herself and do what she wants to do – I think she certainly deserves it!”

Can you help pre-school?
HANHAM (AFTERNOON) WI OUR July meeting started as always with Moira our chairwoman ringing her bell in her usual attempt to bring members to order. Sometimes this works quickly, others well…, however we swiftly got on to matters of the day which included a lively discussion of those with mobility issues and their problems of using public transport and coach services. It appears that some companies react and respond quite differently when approached on the subject and we would be pleased to hear from those operators who take the matter seriously! We continued with making arrangements for our forthcoming Harvest Lunch on Monday September 11 at 1.30pm. Everyone contributes with most things being homemade, but when a volunteer was needed for soup making one member said it was not her strong point, so a few cans was suggested as an option perhaps, which everyone thought hilarious, if not in the spirit of things. If you would like to join us as a guest for the day please give us a call or drop in, you’ll be most welcome. Sadly, one of our valued members June is leaving us and moving to be near her family in Chippenham. We gave her a very tuneful send off and wished her well for the future. A loss for us but as we learnt, her links with the WI will remain with her joining a club near her new home.
This month we invited a musical speaker who played the piano and added amusing poems and songs which was enjoyed by all. Our meeting for August will be somewhat different as we are visiting the WI headquarters of Denman College, near Oxford. This will no doubt prove very interesting for everyone as there are always lots of activities going on there, so please look out for our report next month of how our day unfolds. Being a member of any WI brings lots of ideas for various workshops and organised visits, not only in the local area but further afield too. HANHAM (EVENING) WI The July meeting had to be cancelled because a burst water main forced the closure of Hanham Community Centre.
A HANHAM charity-run pre school is looking for a "fantastic and friendly" volunteer chair or co-chairs. Christ Church Pre School is run by a committee who are also responsible for arranging fun events such as Christmas and summer fairs. They are looking for a special person or persons who could lead them. Katie Gingell, pre school secretary, said: "We are a lovely bunch and would love to chat further about the role." Kingswood History Society THE July topic was ‘Tyntesfield’, the Victorian Gothic Revival house and estate near Wraxall, North Somerset. Terry Stevens told us the long history of the house and estate and the many changes that have occurred over the years. The house is a Grade I listed building named after the Tynte baronets, who had owned estates in the area since about 1500. The human story of the owners, staff and occupants was also revealed. On August 1, Mike Horler spoke on ‘My Life With Shire Horses’ and on September 5, Tony Harcourt will acquaint us with ‘The Medieval Archer’. Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month (March – Dec), at 7.30pm, in Room 4 at the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road opposite the Civic Centre). Thefts from vans are on the rise

WE'VE recently seen an increase in tool thefts from vans across South Gloucestershire. Please tell us if you see anyone acting suspiciously. This crime really does impact on tradespeople’s livelihoods. We know it’s not always possible to empty a work van overnight, but we’d recommend it if you can. Otherwise: • Permanently mark tools with your business name or postcode to make them identifiable • Keep them inside an anchored, secure storage cage or box within the vehicle • Set the alarm as well as locking the van • Park it in a secure garage or with the doors against a wall or another vehicle to make access more difficult If you see anyone trying to break into a van, call 999
immediately. If you see something suspicious but aren’t sure, then ring 101. Don’t help to create a market for stolen goods – we want to hear from you if you see tools offered for sale, online or in person, at a suspiciously cheap price. n n n PCSO Cath Boyce recently visited Longwell Green Primary School to teach the Year 3 children how to stay safe. She talked about using social media and playing online on games consoles, explaining how to make accounts private and how important it is to tell a grown-up if they see something online which worries them. PCSO Boyce also reminded the children not to share any personal information, or any pictures or
video which might show where they live or go to school. She explained that staying together and never going anywhere with strangers would help them stay safe when playing out. Children should always make sure a parent or carer knows where they are and who they are with. If a child is worried by someone, they should always run away home and tell an adult straight away. PCSO Boyce held a competition to see who could design a police car with the most striking safety message. PCSO Andrew LaganaForbes came to choose the winners, Louie and Amelia, who were given a colouring gift bag. We think all the children’s designs were fantastic! PC Lee Humphreys

Medicines assistant wins award Dealer told A LONGWELL Green pharmacy worker known for her "caring and fun" nature has received a national award. Mary Warner, medicines counter assistant at Ellacombe Pharmacy, was highly commended at the Recognition of Excellence Awards which took place during a gala lunch at the Dorchester Hotel in London. Hosted by Training Matters, the awards celebrate the best of medicines counter assistants, dispensing assistants and pharmacy technicians. Mary, who lives in Longwell Green and has worked at the pharmacy for 14 years, was named highly commended for the Counter Intelligence Award. Judges were impressed at how Mary uses her training and knowledge to tailor products to her community and how she reacts to local information, such as the time she made sure the pharmacy team was well-versed

A DRUG dealer from Kingswood has been ordered to pay back more than £29,000 he obtained through crime. Mohammed Diallo, of Greenways, was found to have benefited from selling class A drugs to the sum of £42,115 and was ordered to pay back £29,415 at a hearing held at Bristol Crown Court. At a previous hearing, Diallo admitted charges of possessing crack cocaine, heroin and cocaine with intent to supply, as well as a charge of money laundering. Diallo was jailed for four years and eight months after he admitted his involvement in the drugs trade while he had access to his auntie's home, who was abroad.

n GARDENING SINCE we started our allotment it has provided us with potatoes for about ten months of the year, last year however our crop was only fair to say the least. Apart from blight which did not help, many tubers had been attacked by underground predators. Our preparation had been the same as always, a trench dug which was lined with compost, seeds planted then earthed up. Over the following weeks we had excellent foliage but the harvest was, well as I said, disappointing. So a new approach was considered for this season, namely No Dig. The ground for our potato crop was selected and cleared in the late winter of any remaining crops from 2016. The ground was then divided into 4ft wide beds with an 18 inch wide path in between and then left until planting with two rows per 4ft bed in early April. The soil by then had become somewhat compacted and needed forking through, not digging or turning over but simply inserting a fork every few inches and easing the soil until it became loose. Using a dibber our seed potatoes were then simply popped into its hole about 4 inches deep. Planting a row of potatoes this way was very much quicker and easier than we have ever done. Some readers may remember that we had been making homemade compost over the winter months for earthing up our spuds. Fortunately, enough had been made which was of a suitable texture and was easily piled into a heap along the rows. And apart from initial watering, no other water apart from minimal amounts of rain in recent weeks was applied. We waited in eagerness until the end of June for the results of our newly adopted method. For our earlies, different varieties were tried this year, but
hanham&longwellgreenvoice just five seeds of each. We had sampled Vivaldi a week or so earlier which was an excellent cropper all-round with a superb taste. We’ve never weighed our potatoes before but felt we had to for the results of this trial at least and found that Charlotte produced just over 5 kilos. Accord was a larger tuber but less of them with 4.5 kilos. But our best to date has been Picola Star which produced 6.4 kilos. Not including the Vivaldi which was not weighed, our plot has so far produced well in excess of 30 pounds of potatoes for those of us that prefer the old weight measurements from just 15 seeds and we still have our main crops of King Edward and Majestic to come. Our trial concludes that it is easier and more beneficial to make compost than digging, hope you agree. Additionally, as the beds
were cleared from the harvested potatoes the compost that was used for earthing-up helped retain a loose texture of the soil and just needed to be raked over to which we have immediately followed with a crop of leek seedlings. Hopefully, you’ll see from our success with potatoes that having an allotment does bring its rewards but more so for Sue and Martin who took on a half plot at Hillside Allotments back in February that was somewhat overgrown to say the least. It was

a bit daunting for them as they had little gardening experience but lots of determination as our pictures show of just what has been achieved. From a near wilderness they turned their plot around as it now has a superb shed, water butts and raised beds which have produced an excellent mix of crops. Well done both of you! Needless to say, they already have plans for next year as they will also be tackling an adjacent plot as well. If like us you sow seed in multi cell or single trays you’ll know the importance of adding a label to remind us with what we’ve planted. We offered our neighbour on the allotment a tray of six pumpkins to fill a spare bed. Delighted he was,” I’ll make some soup with those in the winter,” as I handed them over. Unfortunately, the tray did not have a label, a golden rule was broken, but I was sure they were pumpkins as I happily watched him plant them a few weeks ago. The plants matured quickly with several flowers forming. But oh, oh in the last few days those pumpkins are rather long and green my neighbour tells me. “It must be the variety” as I tried to convince him, but he was not having it. “They are Courgettes” he said without doubt and I had to agree. Sorry mate, no soup for you! Think I had better pop into our allotment shop in Nicholas Lane, St. George and stock up on more labels. Do you have any spare

By then our winter crops will be all but over and at that time of year there is always a lull of anything to pick on the allotment. Durham Early cabbage sown in trays by the end of August will be ready for planting out by October. Maturing slowly but steadily throughout the winter months you’ll be cutting your first spring greens as the days are getting longer, leave them a few weeks more so they heart up and you’ll have a very pleasant tasting cabbage. But whilst they are growing, be sure to keep them covered with net as pigeons just love them! The answer is Yes. They are more commonly seen in dogs, as dogs tend to walk in grassy areas, but cats get them too, particularly if they live near woodland or fields. September/October is peak tick season and this year has seen an increase in these nasty little critters. Ticks can carry infectious diseases, including Lyme disease which is thought to be on the increase. Ticks wait in the grass for warm-blooded mammals to brush past, then attach themselves and feed off the blood. The longer the tick is attached, the greater the risk of infection, so check your pet's skin every day. If you find one, don’t pull it off, they should be twisted off with a tick remover tool so that the mouth part is also removed. If the mouth part is left, it can pass on disease or fester and become infected. Ideally, call us for an appointment to see a nurse who will remove it for you free of
charge. The recent humid weather is a perfect breeding ground for ticks and we recommend using tick protection. Your vet will be able to prescribe an effective treatment for both dogs and cats to 3 months. For more information, or to book an appointment, don’t

IT has been a busy period lately so I just wanted to start by saying thank you to all of the local residents who took the time to sign my petition opposing any development on Hanham Hills Green Belt, Hanham Sports Ground and Hanham Nature Reserve. There were over 1000 signatures by the time I submitted it to South Gloucestershire Council’s Policies, Sites and Places Plan consultation. I know how much our green spaces are treasured by all local residents, so it is important we continue to show our community’s strength of feeling against unwanted development. n n n The good news for parents is the introduction from Government of the new Extended Free Entitlement funding from this September. This initiative will extend the free childcare available to many parents from 15 hours to 30 hours. I recently visited a local nursery in Hanham to meet with parents and staff ahead of the introduction of this new Extended
Free Entitlement funding scheme, and the initiative is something I greatly welcome. In addition to this, parents can now apply for the new Tax-Free Childcare top-up. This scheme allows working parents of children, who will be aged under four on 31 August 2017, to apply through the new digital childcare service for Tax-Free Childcare and receive a government top-up of £2 for every £8 that they pay into their Tax-Free Childcare account. This will cut childcare costs by up to £2,000 per year for each child under 12 years old, or £4,000 per year for disabled children under 17 years old. As a father of two young children myself, I know how important these measures will be for parents. to answer questions from pupils and to discuss the role of our democracy and my role as their local MP. It was a great discussion with excellent questions on a range of national and local issues. Some students from the school were then able to visit Parliament the following week where they were given a tour and shown the process of law making. Barbershop singing is not just for the boys! WHEN four pals decided to enter a singing contest, they expected to have a good laugh and a fun day out. But to their astonishment, the barbershop singers found themselves qualifying for a highly sought after place in the national finals, which take place this autumn. The ladies - who call themselves DayDream Quartet - came together from various a cappella groups, including ones in Coalpit Heath and Longwell Green, but had only been practising as a foursome since March. As soon as they started singing as a quartet, they knew they had something special so decided they would set themselves a challenge. The next thing they knew they had signed up for the preliminary round of the LABBS (Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers) national competition, which was recently held in Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire. But they were amazed to hear their names called out as finalists, especially as they were up against more more established quartets. DayDream is made up of baritenor Mary Williams, 42, of Longwell Green, tenor Ali Jack, 61, of Coalpit Heath, bass Claire Bevan, 35, of Frampton Cotterell and lead Jane Crook-Taylor, 51, who recently moved to Wales from Bristol. They got together through their love of music, all regulars on the a cappella choir circuit, Ali, Jane and Mary performing with Planet 24 in

Mary said: "We formed as local singers who have met due to the friendships and connections with various Bristol local barbershop choruses. " The ladies felt they needed to set themselves a goal so entered the competition just to get some experience. Mary said: "We wanted to have something to aim for but only had 13 weeks before the competition. We were the only ones entering who hadn't been an established quartet for many years so we knew we had a lot of work to do." They were lucky enough to enlist the help of an international coach for a few sessions which set them on the right road. Mary said: "We were just
happy to take part and put on some nice frocks! On the day, we were incredibly nervous but we were as prepared as we could be in the time allowed. "We performed two songs and after we came off stage our hearts were racing but people were coming up to us to say we had done a good job. We had to wait all day for the results as there were 28 quartets in total competing for a handful of places. When our name was called out hours later as a finalist, we couldn't believe it! We jumped in the air and whooped a lot!" The ladies, who rehearse weekly in each other's front rooms, are now looking to up the ante in preparation for the national finals. "It's a bit quiet at the moment because of holidays but we will
really click into action later in August," said Mary. They have even purchased their outfits for the nationals, spotted in a department store sale by eagle-eyed Mary. Although she's not giving too much away, Mary will admit they feature quite a lot of sequins. "They're gorgeous. They just happened to have four of them in the right sizes so I took the risk and bought them. Luckily, when I showed them to the others, they loved them!" Their dedication knows no bounds and in mid-August, the ladies will head - families and dogs in tow - to a 'harmony camp' in Staffordshire where they will give their vocal cords a good blast. Mary, who is the assistant director of Cadbury Heathbased Black Sheep Harmony Ladies Chorus as well as running Longwell Green's Zest Tone Deaf Choir, admits music is in her blood. "Barbershop isn't just old music, which a lot of people seem to think it is. "It's everything - right up to modern day music." The ladies will now need to perfect six songs - two for the semi-finals, two if they get to the finals, and two more if they qualify for the Europeans, which all take place from October 26-29 at the Bournemouth International Centre. Mary said: "We have the start of an exciting journey ahead of us and we are aiming for excellence.We're a bunch of middle-aged women but we've already come a long way."

Children bury 'a surprise for the future' CHILDREN from Parkwall Primary School have buried a time capsule at the site of a new housing development in Cadbury Heath. The pupils filled the capsule with items representing their school today and the area in which they live. In addition to letters addressed to children of the future, the children packed items ranging from presentday coins to a DVD featuring the television series Top Gear. Others included examples of pupils’ work, a school jumper and bottles of drinks. They hope it will be ‘a surprise for the future’ when it is discovered at Charlotte Mews in years to come. Mental health workshops SCHOOL staff in South Gloucestershire are to take part in workshops next term to help them support children and young people’s mental health. The NHS and council in the district are working with the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families to provide the twoday training programme for school mental health leads. The aim is to build links between schools and the local CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and to ensure that school staff know what help is available locally for young people. Dr Kate Mansfield, from South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We know that when a young person is brave enough to approach a member of staff at school or medical professional for help, it’s vitally important that we don’t let them fall through the gaps between services. We also know that we can help young people most effectively and they will have the best health outcomes if they receive the right care at the earliest possible age. “This is a great opportunity for staff from schools and mental health care to work more closely to improve the care and experience of children and young people experiencing problems with mental health. “I’m delighted to see local schools engaging in joined-up approaches with mental health services to ensure that children, parents and teachers know what services are available in South Gloucestershire for children and young people with concerns about their mental health." The training is due to be delivered to schools in the north and south of South Gloucestershire during four dates in the autumn. Nixie Splashy Summer Swim by Cas Lester THE characters are called Nixie Briar, Willow, Fuzz, Adorabella and Twist. I liked most of the characters but Adorabella is a bit bossy, saying she is a goody-goody fairy. They made me feel happy and very relaxed. Nixie goes to the pool but her archenemy stops her from having fun, all because of Nixie’s bad wonky wand. The book is definitely fun to read because I read a whole 114 page book in one day. I love this book so much. It’s out of this world. My favourite part was when Willow said that he could not swim because then he made his friends teach him how. The funniest part was when Nixie turns the rubber dinghy into the real frog. There weren’t any scary bits. Sadly I did not learn anything from the book. I recommend this book to children aged 9-10. Archer Anna is bang on target
Rivalry hots up
HANHAM teenager Anna Perkins has represented England in the sport of archery against rival home nations Scotland and Wales. Anna, a student at John Cabot Academy, was over the moon when she was told in April that she had been selected for the England team for the Home Nations match in July. After months of tireless practice, the team of four boys and four girls competed at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire. Thankfully their hard work paid off, with England emerging victorious after seeing off Scotland and Wales. Anna has been shooting for five years and is a member of Cleve Archers, who shoot near Winterbourne. The 15-year-old, who has also represented Gloucestershire for three years at various intercounty matches, holds many county and regional records and last year broke two national

Special day for bowling club FRYS Bowling Club celebrated their centenary with a game against the Somerset Bowls Association executive. The longest serving member of the club of 59 years, Brian Hill, captained the team for the day. After the game, which Somerset won, Frys chairman Andy Kendall gave a speech and Somerset president Ken Leamon congratulated
Frys on reaching 100 years and presented them with a shield to mark the occasion. The day finished with a presentation from the secretary on behalf of the family of former life member of the club, John Clothier. The family gave the club John Clothier’s collection of lapel badges and other items he had collected over the years he was playing bowls.
FOOTBALL club Longwell Green Sports are appealing for two volunteers to help run their Shellards Road-based club. The club need of a secretary for the Reserve and A teams who play in the Bristol Premier and Bristol District League. The job involves running the administration side of the two teams for about four hours a week from home and representing the club at meetings (three per season). Volunteers would also be welcome to attend matches on Saturdays although this is not a necessity. A further volunteer is required to run the club's social media and website.
