Investigation closes Redroofs Nursery TWO nurseries have been temporarily closed pending an investigation after their owner was accused of force-feeding a child with special needs. Redroofs Nursery, which has branches in the Kingsway, St George and Poplar Road, Warmley, was closed by education watchdog Ofsted following a complaint by a member of staff over force-

feeding. Nursery directors, Roger and Lesley Bates, appealed against the six-week suspension, which started on November 4. Although nothing has been proven against Mrs Bates, the Care Standards Tribunal has upheld the decision saying the suspension was '"proportionate". Mrs Bates has said she is "devastated" at the thought

of anyone thinking she would intentionally harm a child. The tribunal heard that a complaint had been made by a member of staff that on September 9 Mrs Bates had forced a three-year-old child with special educational needs to eat by "forcing her mouth open, squeezing her cheeks and putting the spoon with food on it into the child’s mouth". The member of staff said the child had been left unable to communicate, talk or walk and was "extremely distressed". The tribunal heard there had been previous allegations involving Mrs Bates forcefeeding children. One allegation, dating back to 2012, centred on Mrs Bates putting food on a spoon, opening a child’s mouth and force-feeding them, leaving the child “gagging and being sick”. In another allegation, a member of staff claimed Mrs Bates picked up a cup and placed one hand on the back of a child’s head while trying to pour the milk into the child’s mouth. The

child did not open her mouth and the milk spilled down the front of her clothes. The suspension is due to expire on December 15, but could be cut short, or extended, depending on the investigation. Both Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council have been working with parents to help them find other options for children funded by them. A South Gloucestershire Council spokesman said: “Ofsted have alerted us about their decision to suspend a provider with two nurseries, one in South Gloucestershire and one in Bristol, due to safeguarding concerns. "Parents were informed of this decision on Monday 7 November. We have been working with parents of children which we fund to help them find alternative provision and minimise disruption for children and families. As always our top priority is to protect children’s well-being. We are liaising with Ofsted and monitoring this situation very closely.”

We're so proud of our Claudia at Olympics and on BBC Strictly “Claudia's aim was to get to Blackpool and dance in the Tower Ballroom and she achieved that.” Some Some fans think the judges have not taken Claudia,19, and her partner seriously because of their height and have undermarked their routines, especially in the quarter final where their Argentine Tango attracted glowing comments but no perfect 10 scores. Teresa admits to some disappointment about that, but prefers to focus on the support the pair have received. It has been an exciting time for the whole family, including daughters Lorenza, 28, Liliana, 26, Alessia, 12 and Chiara, 10, and grandchildren Matteo, three and Aurelia, one. Paolo, who owns the Noah's Ark play centre in Brislington, and Teresa, a hairdresser, have been to the live shows at Elstree, returning home at 2.3oam each Sunday. "It has been challenging but lovely," said Teresa. "The best thing for me has been to see Claudia growing in confidence. She says she wants to give people the message that it doesn't matter how tall you are or how old you are, you can face your fears and follow your dreams."

SHE's achieved amazing success at gymnastics – but it was always Claudia Fragapane's dream to go on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. So when a chance meeting at an awards ceremony led to an opportunity, she jumped at it, even though it would mean leaving the Rio Olympics before the closing ceremony. Claudia, from Longwell Green, and her partner AJ Pritchard had got through to the 11th week of the competition as the Voice went to print and were hoping to get to the semi finals. “She has always loved Strictly – when she was a little girl she used to dress up and dance around the room when it was on” said her mum Teresa. “She has absolutely loved all the glitz and glamour of the show, especially the dresses and make-up, after she has lived in tracksuits for years.” Claudia's hard work training for gymnastics success – her four golds at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was the biggest haul by a female British athlete for 84 years – has stood her in good stead for all the dance practice. She and AJ work on their routines for at least eight hours a day. “They are both very competitive,” said Teresa.

Foodbank appeal

Last chance to have a say over future of libraries LIBRARY users still have time – just - to put forward their views about the proposed changes to the service from next year. A consultation over South Gloucestershire Council's plans to reduce staffed opening hours at 12 libraries, including Hanham, Cadbury Heath and Kingswood, remains open until January 2. A final decision will be made early in 2017 and implemented no sooner than October. Under the proposals, Hanham would be staffed for 26 hours a week rather than 41.5. Kingswood would also be 26 hours and Cadbury Heath 24. Users are being asked to give their views on which days they would like librarians present. It's part of a council scheme in which all the district's libraries would be accessible for 11 hours a day, seven days a

week using a swipe card system known as Open Plus. This would cost £400,000 to introduce but would save an estimated £500,000 a year in running costs. The council is open to ideas for how to fund additional staffed hours. Save Hanham Library campaigners have approached Hanham and Hanham Abbots parish councils to ask them to consider supporting the library, which they see as a vital community resource, but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. Martin Burton, the council's cultural services manager, explained the proposed changes, which are set to be piloted at Bradley Stoke before being rolled out across the area, at a meeting of the Community Engagement Forum in Hanham last month.

SOUTH Gloucestershire Green Party is appealing for donations to local foodbanks. A spokesman said people should put aside political differences to help people in crisis, especially with Christmas approaching. Food collected by volunteers will be pooled and distributed on December 15. If you’d like to donate, you can get in touch with a local contact to arrange a drop off or can donate directly to the foodbanks listed below. Cadbury Heath Food Plus Centre Resound (Mangotsfield) Foodbank Filton North Bristol Foodbank Kingswood Foodbank (Bourne Christian Centre) Thornbury Foodbank Yate & Chipping Sodbury Foodbank Contact t_hathway93@ hotmail.co.uk for information.

He stressed that no decision had yet been made. Authorities including Gloucestershire and Wiltshire were using open access systems and South Gloucestershire could learn from them, he said. Mr Burton addressed safety fears, saying that security guards would visit and a system would alert them to anyone who did not leave the building before closing time. But he said he thought it unlikely that the library windows could be open during unstaffed opening. He said: “Unlike other authorities, we are not closing libraries so in future we could look at different opening hours which are staffed.” Consultation forms are available at all South Gloucestershire's libraries and can be found online on the council's website.

Sir Bernard Lovell plaque unveiled

A BLUE plaque has been unveiled at the birthplace in Oldland Common of the scientist and astronomer Sir Bernard Lovell. His daughter Judy Spence and other family members attended the unveiling ceremony at the house at 94 West Street last month. The plaque was commissioned by Bitton Parish Council to honour the work and memory of Sir Bernard, who died in 2011, just short of his 99th birthday. Sir Bernard's love of science began at Kingswood Grammar

School and after gaining a first=class degree and PHD from Bristol University in the 1930s he went on to study cosmic rays before working on radar during World War Two. He moved his work from central Manchester to Cheshire, where he established the Jodrell Bank Observatory and the radio telescope that bears his name. He

was knighted in 1961. Parish council chairman Roger Coales said at the unveiling: “The work and life of Sir Bernard Lovell is a source of great pride to this community.” Mrs Spence said it was amazing to think that they were standing in the street where her father had bowled his hoop, played marbles and “run with

the pack”. After the unveiling, the family and other visitors attended an exhibition of work in St Anne's Church Hall by children from local primary schools and Sir Bernard Lovell Academy into aspects of the scientist's life and career. The exhibition can now be seen in the Giotto gallery at the academy.

Doubt remains over future of Christmas Fair THE FUTURE of Hanham's annual Christmas fair could be under threat if more volunteers don't come forward to help. This year's fair - which had been due to go ahead on Friday December 2 - was cancelled and a late-night shopping event took its place with Santa putting in an appearance at Hanham Library. Bernard Jackson, owner of florists Fleurtations and chairman of the Hanham Business and Community Partnership, said it was too early to say if the fair would return as normal next year. "We're always keen for it to go ahead but if we're not going to get the manpower to help

us it won't go ahead," he said. "We normally start planning for the fair in the spring and by then we will know whether or not we are going to get a proper team together. If no one bothers to do anything then it will just die which would be a great shame." Traders had originally decided in June not to hold the event because of a lack of support but changed their minds in September when offers of help increased. They applied to close the road but police objected following trouble with youths outside of Lidl after last year's fair. By that time, it was too late for traders

to employ extra security to fulfil safety regulations to enable the road closure to be agreed and the fair had to be cancelled. Mr Jackson, who has run Fleurtations for the past 10 years, said the objection to this year's event had been disappointing. "The people who caused the trouble last year weren't at the fair and arrived afterwards. The actual fair went off without trouble. We've held a fair for the past 10 years and it's always gone off successfully and safely. I really can't say whether it will go ahead next year unless we get enough offers of help, either from other traders or from people in the community."

THESE young singers are celebrating after coming first in the under 11 vocal group section at the Longwell Green Eisteddfod. The pupils from Christ Church Infant School took part in the competition during the October half term and sang Somewhere over the Rainbow and a Gospel Medley. After rehearsing since September, the choir of pupils aged between five and seven saw their hard work pay off when they received a cup for their win. The choir has taken part in the Eisteddfod since 2011,and has always been the youngest group of singers. The singers also perform regularly at community events in Page Park and Downend and Bromley Heath.

Abbeyfield, which operates Kift Lodge in Memorial Road, has launched Companionship at Christmas to support people living in the communities around its 500-plus houses and homes across the country. The older people's charity is holding nationwide events where Abbeyfield houses will be offering festive foodfocused events, from coffee mornings to mince pies and carols, as well as overnight stays for over-55s who would otherwise be waking up to an empty house on the morning of December 25. Abbeyfield chief executive Natasha Singarayer said: “Our

Companionship at Christmas campaign was born out of Abbeyfield’s desire to give as many older people as possible some golden moments to enjoy and remember. "It’s a sobering thought that an estimated 500,000 older people will be spending Christmas alone this year." If you are living alone and want to find out more about Companionship at Christmas or are concerned about a neighbour, friend or family member who is isolated, contact Abbeyfield on 01727 734 167. Movember men LONGWELL Green councillor Toby Savage led “Team Tache” in South Gloucestershire in support of the Movember charity initiative. Councillor Savage, who chairs the Health Scrutiny Committee, and other members of the public health team showed off a variety of moustache styles as the month to raise men’s health awareness came to an end. Mr Savage said he particularly wanted to highlight the issue of men’s mental health. He said: “It is unfortunately true to say that men’s health in England and Wales still lags behind the health of women and South Gloucestershire is no exception to this trend. Reducing this imbalance is one of the main priorities of the South Gloucestershire Health and Wellbeing Board, which is why as a council we are working to improve men’s health to reduce health inequalities for our community. “Mental health affects one in four of the population and while Movember is about raising awareness among men, there is help available for anyone who would like to know more or who feels they need some support.” He urged anyone who knew someone struggling with poor mental health to contact mentalhealth@southglos.gov.uk for more information about local services and support.

Illegal rave closed down by police POLICE closed down an illegal rave after they were called to a disused pub in Kingswood. Six people were arrested and sound equipment seized following the unlicensed music event at the former Chequers pub in Lodge Road. More than 100 people were found to be trespassing when police entered the premises at around 10.30pm on Saturday November 19. Police say a 'significant' number of officers were used to stop further people entering and to ensure the event was closed down safely. Superintendent Catherine Johnstone said: “Unlicensed music events pose a serious risk to public safety and our primary focus was to use all the necessary policing resources to bring the event to a safe conclusion. “Events can pose a real and substantial risk to safety when they’re not properly managed or licensed and cause distress to residents living nearby through the resulting noise and disruption. “We’re now carrying out an investigation to ensure all criminal offences are pursued. “We’ll also be liaising with the landowner to ensure this premises is properly secured to prevent any re-occurrence. “I’d like to thank the local community for alerting us to the incident and for their patience and support while we dealt with it.”

Killed in a Coalpit - Lives of the Kingswood Colliers AUTHOR and historian DP Lindegaard has published an updated version of her book Killed in a Coalpit – Lives of the Kingswood Collieers. The 272-page hardback is the result of more than 40 years of research and is sponsored by the South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group. Mrs Lindegaard, nee Doreen Pillinger, told an audience of more than 30 people at Kingswood Heritage Museum for the book's launch that her interest had been sparked by her great, great grandfather Stephen Pillinger, 1808 to 1899, who was a coalminer before becoming a hatter and then a local preacher.

Stephen's brother Jacob, 1798 to 1838, was killed in an accident at Easton pit with another man and three boys and is buried in Kingswood churchyard. Mrs Lindegaar has scoured newspaper reports, church and coroner's records to find out more about some of the names whose deaths are recorded alongside the single line “killed in a coalpit”. She published the book initially in the 1980s and found out so much more as a result that she brought out a supplement in 1991. The latest version, which costs £15, includes many more stories and photographs.

Treat for pupils as Pudsey drops in PUDSEY Bear paid a visit to Samuel White’s Infants and Hanham Abbots Junior Schools to celebrate The Big Spotacular, Lloyds Bank and BBC Children in Need’s exciting new school fundraising campaign. The Big Spotacular is encouraging children and teachers to dress up in spots, sell spotty cakes and goods, and take part in spotty themed challenges, to raise more money than ever before for disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. As part of the campaign, and organised by staff at Lloyds Bank head office in Bristol, Pudsey was invited to surprise pupils at Hanham Primary Federation on November 30. He met hundreds of pupils and teachers to thank them for their hard work raising funds for BBC Children in Need. Gabby Christopher, headteacher at Samuel White’s, said: “We were very excited to receive a visit from Pudsey and the team at Lloyds Bank. The pupils loved it and it was great to have all their support acknowledged. This visit from Pudsey has created a real buzz around the school and will no doubt continue to inspire the children’s fundraising efforts for BBC Children in Need for future years too.” Pete Hutton, HR manager from Lloyds Bank head office in Bristol , said: “Lloyds Bank is proud to support BBC Children in Need and the thousands of schools doing spotty fundraising for The Big Spotacular. We’re really pleased that we were able to accompany Pudsey and visit pupils in Hanham.” Early years provision for children from 2 to 4 years

Sheila's 30 years of service at hospice shop A KINDHEARTED woman is celebrating 30 years of volunteering for Bristol's muchloved charity St Peter’s Hospice. The charity, which has a branch in Hanham High Street, has honoured Sheila Williamson for her years of dedicated service and hope her story will encourage more people to help out at the city's numerous shops. Sheila, 73, began volunteering at the hospice shop in Regent Street, Kingswood on the very first day it opened after learning about it from friends who supported the hospice. She was in her 40s then and has now clocked up a whopping 30 years of volunteering service for the charity. Now helping the team at the Kings Chase branch, Sheila says the role has changed her life, giving her more confidence and a way to meet new friends. “I absolutely love volunteering for St Peter’s Hospice, it’s been brilliant for me. It gets me out, it’s given me

Sheila (middle) with mum Iris and daughter Jane

confidence and I’ve learnt how to work in a shop, which I’d never

done before. There was a time when I wouldn’t say boo to a

goose but now I make a point of having a little bit of conversation with everyone I serve. I’ve made great friends with colleagues and regular customers. “When I had a hip operation I made it in on crutches and when there was a fire in the shop a few years ago I signed up to volunteer in another shop until it was reopened because I didn’t want to miss out! It’s my favourite day of the week,” said Sheila. And it seems Sheila has passed her love of volunteering on to her family. At one time Sheila, her mother and her daughter all worked in the Kingswood shop together on a Friday. She said: “That was a lovely time, my granddaughter had just started school so my daughter had more time on her hands and my mother needed to get out the house. She volunteered for 20 years and is in her late 80s now so it obviously did her good!

n NEWS “Of course the shops have changed a lot since the early days. We used to have two people to a till and one would take the money and one would write it in the book. What a difference to the tills now, but we didn’t know any different.” Sheila is one of 151 volunteers who was honoured at the annual St Peter’s Hospice Long Service Awards on Monday November 7. The volunteers, who have given 5,10,15,20,25 and 30 years of service have collectively clocked up 1500 years between them. If the excitement of the ceremony wasn’t enough, this year the awards were handed out by actress Sunetra Sarker from Casualty, Sheila’s favourite programme. Sheila added: “I was so excited to hear that Sunetra would be there, I watch Casualty every week without fail! “It’s lovely to be recognised for our contribution. I always encourage others to take up volunteering, if anyone is lonely or looking for a new hobby, do some charity work, it will do the

world of good. “We are short staffed at the Kingswood shop at the moment so we’d love to see some new faces volunteering.” As Bristol’s only adult hospice, St Peter’s Hospice cares for more than 2,670 patients each year as well as supporting family members. All services are provided free of charge for patients and their families and this care costs around £19,000 a day. In order to continue providing vital care for the people of Bristol, St Peter’s Hospice relies on donations from fundraising and money generated by the 50 hospice charity shops in Bristol and surrounding districts. Over 1500 volunteers are signed up to help St Peter’s Hospice but more are always needed. You can contact Russell directly to find out about volunteering roles across the organisation on 0117 915 9448 or email russell.cowan@ stpetershospice.org

Traffic calming is hailed a success A TRAFFIC calming scheme which has replaced hazardous chicanes in Barrs Court has been hailed a success. The dangerous combination of long straight roads, chicanes, and steady streams of commuter traffic through Craven Way have brought misery to the community for a years. Councillors Nick Barrett and Kay Barrett, who represent Parkwall, Cadbury Heath, and Barrs Court, had campaigned on behalf of residents, asking South Gloucestershire Council to remove the chicanes and replace them with speed tables. Their wish was granted and work to install six speed tables was completed in September. Now the councillors say average speeds along Craven Way have dropped by 20 per cent, with some approaches to the road seeing reductions of more than 10mph. Nick Barrett said the evidence shows people were speeding through the chicanes but think twice about doing the same now. "After a long campaign it’s great to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. The chicanes were causing long tailbacks, and drivers careering into them have ended up in people’s front gardens before, feet away from where residents are sat in their living rooms." Mr Barrett said traffic is now moving more freely putting an end to tailbacks and frustrated drivers. "The speed tables keep speeds down, but free up the traffic so it can move," he said. "We have even been able to install a new place to cross at the Tower Road end of Craven Way, which has been a huge help to local people with disabilities and small children. ”

Firefighters spread the word on safety FIREFIGHTERS went back to school when they joined pupils to talk about the importance of fire safety in the home. The crew, from Blue Watch at Kingswood Fire Station, led an assembly at Park Primary School where they thanked pupils for completing a home fire safety project. Avon Fire & Rescue Service is supporting the national Fire Kills campaign by encouraging local school children and their families to test their smoke alarms. Children from the Kingswood school brought home a letter asking parents and guardians to work with their child to ensure their home is safe from fire by checking the smoke alarm batteries and completing the home fire safety survey. Smoke alarms provide a warning that fire has broken out and could give occupants of a house vital extra minutes to escape, especially at night. Between April 2015 and

March 2016 AF&RS attended 539 house fires. There was no smoke alarm fitted in 185 (34%) of these, however this has improved by 7% compared with last year where 41% of homes had no smoke alarm. AF&RS group manager for Risk Reduction, Matt Peskett, said: “Kingswood

firefighters were delighted to join in the school assembly and thank the children for completing their home fire safety project. “Working with Park Primary School provides us with an opportunity to offer children really important fire safety messages and projects which

they can take home and complete with their family.” AF&RS offers free home fire safety visits where staff provide fire safety advice and fit free smoke alarms if required. To book, visit www.avonfire. gov.uk, call 0117 926 2061 or text VISIT to 07507 319694.

n LETTER FROM OUR MP

Reflecting on the past year

Kingswood MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

NOW that our thoughts are turning to Christmas as the winter nights are certainly here, I wanted to start by wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year. It’s that time of the year when we get the chance to reflect on the past year, and consider what resolutions we wish to achieve for the next. 2016 ended up being a busy year both personally and politically - Lydia and myself welcomed our son Henry to the world in March, and with ‘two under two’, it’s been hectic balancing work life with family life. I keep on saying this, but I we do have some fantastic facilities locally, and I’ve really enjoyed making use of local family facilities such as Longwell Green Leisure Centre— I’m looking forward to the new £1.5million redevelopment of the centre, which will begin in early 2017, which will enable even more facilities going forward. Obviously the country’s decision to leave the EU - in our local area, 56% voted to leave the EU - was not what I voted for personally, but I respect the decision of the people and the Government will be triggering Article 50 in 2017, beginning the process of leaving the EU. No doubt this will take up a great deal of time as Parliament introduces a ‘Great Repeal Bill’, but I am still determined that other local priorities locally and nationally must be part of my focus as your local MP. After I managed to get £500,000 funding for detailed feasibility study for one of the major projects that I have been working on, a link road from the ring road to the M4, dubbed ‘junction 18a’, I’m pleased that this work will begin in 2017, and hopefully will lead

building a supermarket at the old Kleeneze Factory site in Hanham. After ten years campaigning on the issue, fighting to ensure that we would have 228 parking spaces at the supermarket that could be used by Hanham shoppers, I’m disappointed by Tesco’s delay and final decision. I’ve written to Tesco calling for an urgent meeting - and to also discuss how the site can best be used for the benefit of the whole Hanham community. It is such an important development that must be handled correctly. I hope to update readers going forward. I hope that 2017 is a great year for all readers - obviously I hope that you have a wonderful year going forwards, but if any issue or problem does arise and I can help, please do get in contact as would be lovely to hear from you- I’m on chris@chrisskidmore.com or 0117 9081524 or come to one of my surgeries at my office at 60 Hanham High Street!

to a bid into the Road Investment Strategy which will allow work on a junction to begin in 2020. I’ve been pressing the case for the ‘M4 Link’ since 2008, and I am determined to keep campaigning for this vital piece of infrastructure. I’m hoping that the Government will also look closely at a new £50m Automotive Academy run by the University of Bath at the Science Park in Emersons Green, which could lead to hundreds of new jobs locally. I’ve been playing a lead role in trying to secure funding for this major project, and I am anticipating a decision on the project early next year. In 2017, we also have the West of England Mayoral Elections - a fantastic opportunity to ensure that locally in South Glos we have our voice heard, rather than everything being dominated by Bristol. I hope that the new Mayor, when elected, will ensure that our voice in Hanham and Longwell Green is heard loud and clear. I will be calling for this. In a moving service on Remembrance Sunday, wreaths were laid by representatives from organisations including South Gloucestershire Council, Hanham Parish Council, Hanham Abbots Parish Council, Hanham Community Centre, the Royal British Legion, Hanham History Society, Hanham Y's Men and Hanham Business and Community Partnership. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore and representatives from churches in the area also laid wreaths in tribute. The service, in the grounds of Hanham Community Centre, featured Crofts End Silver Band and Hanham Detachment Army Cadet Force. This year's service was particularly poignant as it marked the 100th centenary of the Battle of the Somme, in which more than a million men were killed or injured on all sides. The service was conducted by Rev Barry Bishop, Hanham Methodist Church; Rev Peter Cook, Hanham Baptist Church; Rev John Goodridge, Christchurch with St George and Rev James Jang, Hanham United Reform Church.

MP Chris pays tribute HE LOST his life at the age of just 31, a brave British soldier fighting against North Korean forces. Lance Corporal George Henry Lawrence died on November 25, 1950 while fighting with the Gloucestershire Regiment in Korea. Kingswood MP and Minister Chris Skidmore laid a wreath at the soldier's grave during a Government trip to South Korea. Speaking after the memorial service, Chris said: "I am truly humbled to be able to honour Lance Corporal George Henry Lawrence, who fought and died for the values we so often take for granted in Britain - values of freedom Chris Skidmore at Lance Corporal and democracy. Lawrence's grave in South Korea "On this day, both our countries stand united to remember all those who have defended our values and risked their lives to protect us. We owe them a debt that can never be repaid." Three arrested after spate of handbag snatches THREE people have been arrested after a spate of handbag snatches in Kingswood. In each case a woman was walking along the road when a man walked or cycled up to her and grabbed her bag. The incidents happened on Thursday November 10 in Two Mile Hill Road and Orchard Road, and on Friday November 11 in Moravian Road, Bank Road and High Street. The thief made off with the bag in all but one incident, in which the woman resisted and the would-be thief cycled off empty-handed after realising a passerby was likely to intervene. The women were aged between 30 and 73 and the incidents on Thursday November 10 happened just before 6.30pm and at 9pm, while those on Friday were between 1.40pm and 3.30pm. Two men and a woman have now been arrested in connection with the incidents. After a search of the area police recovered a handbag – minus purse, cash and phone - dumped in Bright Street. A man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and theft, while a woman and a second man were arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods. All three have been released on police bail pending further enquiries. PC 1309 Gavin Deegan said: “This has been very distressing for the ladies concerned. We’re glad to have been able to recover some of the stolen property and make arrests however our investigation is continuing and we’re keen to hear from anyone who witnessed any of these incidents.” Anyone with any information should get in touch through the police website, www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact, or by calling 101, quoting reference 5216250722.

How to stay safe ALTHOUGH such incidents are unusual in Kingswood, police are encouraging people to deter thieves by: • Walking facing oncoming traffic • Trying to stay near a group of people or heading to a busy place such as a shop or garage • Trying to stay aware of your surroundings – avoid wearing headphones or chatting on your mobile • Trying not to keep all your valuables in your bag – it’s sensible to keep your keys, phone and wallet or purse in an inside pocket instead

Stay safe in season of goodwill I'D like to thank two of our PCSOs who spotted a suspect while patrolling in Hanham High Street on Saturday November 12. They gave chase on foot and alerted police officer colleagues. A 29-year-old woman from Kingswood was subsequently charged with 11 counts of shoplifting. She’s suspected of stealing goods worth in all more than £1,000, including alcohol, cosmetics and perfume from shops in Longwell Green, Kingswood, Warmley and further afield. Please be on the alert as we’ve also charged two men with going equipped to steal after they were stopped by patrolling officers in Longwell Green. It happened in the early hours of Monday October 17. A vehicle was stopped in Kingsfield Lane, soon after a report of an alarm activation nearby. If you hear anything suspicious at night do please check and call

If it’s News call 07919 100565 or 07880 731148

us straight away. It’s 999 if you see someone committing a crime and 101 if you find signs of an offence but there’s no one around. Christmas is almost here! Thieves like crowds and the shops and pubs will be busy: •K eep your phone, keys and wallet or purse in an inside pocket and your handbag closed •P ark in a busy area, always lock your vehicle and don’t leave anything on view •D on’t leave bags of shopping unattended in your car while you carry on spending •M ake your home look occupied while you’re out – use timer light switches, leave a radio on and don’t forget to lock up •K eep presents safety hidden until Father Christmas makes his delivery, not on view to tempt an opportunist thief • I f Santa brings a new electrical item or bicycle register it at www.immobilise.com or www. bikeregister.com

Planning a festive evening out? • Make sure someone knows where you’re going, who you’re with and when you’ll be home • Keep an eye on your wallet, bag, phone and keys • Designate a driver who’ll stick to soft drinks, pre-book a taxi or arrange a lift home • Remember you could still be over the legal limit for driving the morning after Of course we'll be on patrol, but everyone can help to keep our area safe. I’d also like to talk to you about our domestic abuse awareness campaign, which runs until Christmas. We know that older people, men, people in LGBT+ relationships may all be affected by domestic abuse, but don’t always report it. Please, if you have any reason to believe someone you know is affected, look for the signs, listen, ask and ask again. Visit www. thisisnotanexcuse.org.uk

n NEWS

In memory of Dan CHARITIES, individuals and voluntary groups working with young people across greater Bristol are being invited to apply for grants in memory of Dan Hickey, who was killed by a hitand-run driver last year. His family has set up a fund, managed by the Quartet Community Foundation, to support initiatives that benefit people up to the age of 25. The focus is on drama and sport projects, because these were two of 25-year-old Dan's passions. Applications for grants of between £1,000 and £2,500 must be submitted by December 19. A panel of family and friends will decide who will receive funds. http://quartetcf.org.uk/ grant-programmes/dan-hickeyfund-grant/

MORE than 150 young singers and instrumentalists from South Gloucestershire performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London. They were taking part in the Music for Youth

Proms on November 14 as part of the world’s largest youth music festival. Among them were students from Sir Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common.

n BOOKS OF THE MONTH

Christmas Crafting In No Time by Clare Youngs WITH the festive season fast approaching, what better way to fill those winter evenings and wet weekends than by making your own decorations, gifts and edible delights. This book is crammed full of quick and easy makes, from sugar mice to fur-lined baby boots and a Nordic-inspired snowflake garland. Many of these projects can be made all year round, not just for

the Christmas season and will inspire you to adapt and use the techniques in the book in your future crafting. This is a beautifully illustrated and photographed craft book, with clear instructions and something for everyone, whatever their ability, to create. Most of the projects and recipes use easy to source inexpensive materials and ingredients - even recycling

an old sweater to make a Polar bear hot water bottle cover. My favourite make in the book is the adorable pair of mice, complete with their own natty outfits that can be made from scraps of fabric you may already have. Altogether a treasure trove of crafting fun to brighten the gloomiest day! Review by Angela

Which foods are toxic to pets? IT can be very tempting to share food with our pets, particularly around Christmas time when there is plenty of food to indulge in. However, do remember that some foods are toxic to animals and could make them unwell. We’ve compiled a list of some of the foods that are poisonous to pets: Chocolate – the most wellknown poisonous food. Chocolate contains theobromine which can affect the heart and nervous system. Depending on how much chocolate and what type was eaten by your pet (dark chocolate is particularly dangerous), you may see symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle tremors or seizures. Onions and garlic can cause digestive upsets and anaemia and Grapes, raisins and currants can cause kidney failure – so be sure to keep the Christmas pudding out of reach! Caffeine can cause reactions are very similar to chocolate

poisoning and can include restlessness, rapid breathing and heart palpitations. All parts of the avocado are toxic to rabbits, rodents, birds and reptiles due to a substance called persin. Persin can cause heart failure in rodents and breathing difficulties in birds. Contrary to popular belief, cats shouldn’t be drinking cow’s milk. Cats and dogs cannot digest lactose effectively and can cause nasty digestive upsets. This includes excessive amounts of

cheese and butter. Xylitol (artificial sweeteners) – often found in sweets and chewing gum, can make an animal’s blood sugar drop too quickly and cause liver failure. Macadamia Nuts are particularly toxic to dogs causing symptoms such as weakness, depression, tremors, vomiting and increased body temperature (hyperthermia). Too much salt can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, depression, tremors, hyperthermia or seizures, and frequently feeding your pet raw fish can cause a vitamin B deficiency resulting in seizures. If your pet has eaten any of the above foods, please always seek veterinary advice. Some will affect your pet more rapidly than others so it’s always best to check what to do next. Contact Longwell Green Veterinary Centre on 0117 9323660 for more information or advice.

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH WOW! Hasn’t the Christmas season crept up on us this year? I think it’s because we were enjoying such good weather until recently, it seemed that Christmas was such a long way off. But of course the TV and media reminded us with tempting offers that we need to get our act together, and with so much technology to help us how can we not spend our money on those gifts? So, do you think Father Christmas knows what a Digital Christmas is? Everything seems to have gone into the electronic age, whether it’s your TV or your phone or your camera, all have gone digital. ‘This must be important and we must get a new one of all of them because everyone else has got one now!’ I am being slightly sarcastic, but at this time of year we can easily get carried away with trying to conform to the norm, the ‘latest’; that which everyone else is doing. A long time ago there was a couple who, although engaged, were expecting their first child and, in those days, this was not a good state to be in. They were in the middle of a census and had to stay in poor lodgings. The baby was born in unhygienic conditions, not

Elderly man attacked in house burglary a good start to family life. All these things did not conform to the norm at the time but it didn’t stop them from giving their new born child all the love they could. This child grew to be the reason we have Christmas. As you prepare for the celebrations, take a little time to remember the story behind the Nativity, the real message of non fashion conscious love from one child to all children, that they might enjoy life to the max. May the love of God that came down at Christmas settle on your home this Christmas season. Happy Christmas. Revd Barry Bishop, Hanham, South Gloucestershire

A MAN in his 60s has been left with head injuries and a broken arm following an aggravated burglary in St George. The incident took place at around 9.30pm on Friday November 18 when two men forced their way into a property in Whiteway Road and threatened a couple, both who are in their 60s. The two men went onto seriously assault the man, leaving him with head injuries and a broken arm. His wife managed to escape the property and raise the alarm. Det Sgt Nicholas Lawson, of Bristol Investigations, said: “This was a frightening ordeal for the couple, who were threatened in their own home. “The man suffered some serious injuries during a sustained assault, but he’s been treated at hospital and has since been discharged. “The offenders were wearing masks and hooded tops during the incident. “They made off with four men’s gold chains, one with the Star of David on, a woman’s gold wedding ring and a handbag. “If you are offered any items like this for sale, if you saw or heard anything suspicious in the Whiteway Road area that night, or if you saw two men running away from the scene, please call us as soon as possible.” If you can help, call Bristol Investigations on 101 and quote reference number 5216257102.

HANHAM (EVENING) WI “WHERE has the last year gone?” That was the thought uppermost on the minds of many members at the branch AGM as they looked back on some memorable events from the previous year, celebrated an increase in membership and anticipated a new and varied program for the coming year. Lots more work for an energetic, active and willing committee to look forward to – if that’s the right phrase. Handbags to glad rags – nappy cakes to WI bakes – just some of the stalls that came together in November to make the branch Autumn Fayre the success it was. The event was very well supported, not just by local people but many from further afield. They came to take advantage of some early Christmas shopping, pick up a bargain or two or just have a chat and socialise with friends over a cup of coffee – and of course a piece of WI cake. Entertainment was in the form of occasional choruses from the ever-popular Black Sheep Harmony. The branch is extremely grateful to everyone that came along and would also like to thank the local businesses who helped to promote the day.

Visitors flocked to enjoy the Autumn Fayre 11 Downing Street unexpectedly featured during the Home Skills and Gardens Day organised by the Avon Federation. Bernard Jackson from Hanham florists Fleurtations told the meeting in Timsbury, made up of members from several local branches, how he was selected to provide a wreath and then invited along to place it on that famous door in front of the world’s media. The meeting was also updated on the latest cookery news from National Representatives as well as hearing an interesting talk from Derry Watkins who runs a nursery in Cold Ashton. Dianna Coles

CAN we firstly extend a huge thank you to Nicola Eaton from the Really Expensive Chocolate Club who was absolutely fabulous at our November meeting. She shared her experiences with us and some rather yummy samples too. I am sure she inspired quite a few of us with her creative ideas. Make sure you wear your best frock for our party on December 12. Looking forward to 2017, we have a jam packed (not necessarily raspberry), action filled, inspiring programme to bring members and non-members. We do our best to offer a little bit of everything to everyone. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors, you can find out more out our meetings by contacting: mangotsfieldwi@ gmail.com or looking at our website: www. mangotsfieldwi.org.uk Kate Tarr

n ADVERTISING FEATURE

Getting ready for the big Christmas Cut Down ALREADY famous for its “Choose and Cut” Christmas Trees, the owners of Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm also wish to remind their customers that they can reserve their own growing tree for cutting closer to Christmas. This ensures a fresher tree, and it also means you can come earlier for a better choice. In our early days - it must have been about 2004 - I would get up very early each December morning, and cut down as many trees as I could before 8am, and then drag them down the field - one or two at a time to the car park where people would begin to turn up from 9am onwards. It was exhausting work, but great fun. As demand increased, however, we had to find a better system, so we began to hand out saws to customers so that they could go into the field and choose and cut their own. It didn’t take long for the idea to catch on, and each year more and more people turned up expecting to cut their own tree, either bringing their own saw or wanting to borrow one. One busy Saturday, I sent my dad out to B&Q to buy as many bow saws and gloves as he could, so that we could hand them out to eager customers. There were so many trees growing that a teepee amongst the Fraser Firs was pretty well hidden. Apart from the health and safety concerns, we soon began to realise the havoc caused by unregulated cutting. By the

end of the season 2009, there were suddenly very few Christmas Trees left for 2010! And since a Christmas tree takes about 7 years to grow, not only were there no trees for 2010, but no trees for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, or 2016. Somehow we muddled through those last 7 years, being very careful how many trees we sold each year from our own field, and nurturing our remaining stock. Every year, the situation slowly improved, and this year we are beginning to see a new forest of Christmas Trees emerge, which means more choice for our customers. Eager not to repeat the mistakes of the past, we now have a new system in place.

We are restricting “choose and cut” to the dates of Saturday Nov26th to Sunday December 11th. If you want to come and reserve a tree during that time, but don’t want to cut it until closer to Christmas, that’s fine. We’ll give you special ribbon and tag so that you can mark your tree, then you can come back when you’re ready any day up until Christmas Eve to cut and collect your tree. Even better, bring your own ribbons and markers, so that you can properly mark your tree to make sure that no one cuts it down by mistake. Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm is open until Christmas Eve, 9am-6pm every day. www.frenchaychristmastreefarm.co.uk
