We will do better Pledge after Hanham Woods Academy fails Ofsted inspection LEADERS of the Cabot Learning Federation have vowed to ensure rapid improvements at Hanham Woods Academy, which has been placed in Special Measures by the education watchdog Ofsted. Inspectors said the federation, which opened the academy three years ago to replace Hanham High School, had not taken action quickly enough to overcome the challenges the school faces. They rated the school as inadequate in all areas: leadership and management; quality of teaching and learning; personal development, welfare and behaviour, and outcomes for students. A CLF spokesman said: "Both before and since the inspection, the Academy has taken action to make swift improvements. There are very encouraging signs of recent marked improvements and the Academy is confident they can meet the challenges and targets set." Full report: Pages 4 & 5

He's done it – 1 million HE'S done it! Singer Frankie Johns has smashed his ambitious target to collect one million pennies for the charity Help for Heroes. To celebrate he visited pupils at St Stephen's Junior School in Soundwell to tell them all about his extraordinary journey. The 58-year-old from Kingswood whose real name is John Billitteri, came up with the idea back in 2013 and has been busy ever since travelling across the city with his bike and trailer collecting people's spare change. He also visited schools and put collection buckets in local pubs and clubs, including those where he performs, and has now surpassed his target by reaching the grand total of 1,018,784

Frankie, who was nominated for the regional heats of the Pride of Britain awards for his pennies campaign, brought his bike and trailer to the school hall where a special assembly was held. Among pupils was none other than Frankie's grandson, eightyear-old Colby, who became centre of attention for the day. After telling pupils about his campaign and the charity Help for Heroes, Frankie then took questions from pupils who were keen to find out more. Frankie said: "It's absolutely brilliant to reach the target. "It's been a challenge but a good one. I've loved getting out and meeting people and have

n EDUCATION

Barrs Court celebrates success BARRS Court Primary School has maintained its Good rating with education watchdog Ofsted. Inspector Steve Smith visited the school near Longwell Green in October and found it provides a good quality of education for its pupils with a strong leadership team at the helm. According to Mr Smith, pupils enjoy going to school and are keen to participate because they are "energised" by staff. "Their behaviour is good and they respond well to the good quality of teaching they receive," he said in his report. The report also stated: "Pupils across the school have good attitudes to learning. They feel confident to share their opinions and make mistakes because they know they are wellsupported by staff." Mr Smith has asked leaders to ensure that staff continue to challenge the most able pupils so they can make full progress. In a newsletter to parents headteacher Jess Caunter said: "It is great to know that our hard work is appreciated."

Hanham Woods: Poor in a THE first Ofsted inspection of Hanham Woods Academy found the school to be Inadequate in all areas. Following the visit by four inspectors to the 862-pupil school in Memorial Road on October 3, the school has been placed in Special Measures. Lead inspector Paul Williams said: "Senior leaders are failing to provide pupils with an acceptable standard of education. They have not done enough to improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment. As a result, pupils’ academic achievement has been held back for too long." Hanham Woods Academy was opened by Cabot Learning Federation in 2014, replacing Hanham High School. But according to Ofsted, it has not yet secured improvements in achievement or behaviour. "The trust underestimated the challenges faced by the school," Mr Williams said. "Pupils have underachieved across a range of subjects for too long. Pupils’ progress in GCSE English, mathematics and science has been unacceptably low." Pupils' behaviour also came in for criticism. "Too many lessons are disrupted when pupils lose concentration," the report said.

Principal Steve Kneller, right, and students hand over proceeds of a non-uniform day to the British Heart Foundation. Ofsted said HWA supported spiritual, moral, social and cultural education well A new 'Ready to Learn' behaviour management system had been introduced the day before the inspection so had not had time to take effect. Ofsted acknowledged that safeguarding practices had improved at HWA and pupils felt safe and well cared for, while leaders had stabilised finances and got rid of a large budget deficit.

On the eve of the report's publication, CLF held meetings for parents, many of whom were angry at the school's failure. Communication with families was one of the many criticisms in the report, and the school has now introduced weekly newsletters, regular parent forums and has stepped up work with the Friends of Hanham Woods Academy. In response to the findings,

Bristol Brunel Academy wins praise

Principal Jon Jones and students at Bristol Brunel Academy

BRISTOL Brunel Academy in Speedwell is celebrating after again being rated Good by the watchdog Ofsted. Inspectors who visited in October said the school had maintained standards since the last visit in 2013. In a letter to the principal, Jon Jones, Ofsted’s Richard Steward said: "The majority of current pupils make good progress in a wide range of subjects, including English and mathematics. You have reduced previous differences between the achievement of disadvantaged pupils and other pupils significantly. “You acknowledge, however, that you still have more work to do to ensure that you help the most able pupils, including those who are disadvantaged, to achieve at the very highest levels.” The inspector said strong and confident leadership at the academy provided a clear sense of direction and ambition. “Changes you have made to the curriculum are clearly having a positive impact on the progress that pupils make,” he said. “Pupils are proud of their school and appreciate the positive impact the behaviour policy, ‘Right to Learn’, has on their progress. They are polite and respectful, wear their uniform with pride and treat each other with kindness.” Mr Steward also praised the school for its “strong culture of safety which permeates every aspect of school life.” Mr Jones said: “I feel incredibly proud of the students, staff and families for the recognition highlighted in this feedback letter."

all areas Blow for CLF as principal Steve Kneller, who arrived at HWA in April 2016, said: "We recognise that the phrase ‘Special Measures’ sounds worrying to parents, but in practice it means we have to take immediate action with regard to the inspection report’s recommendations, so that we can demonstrate tangible improvement by the time Ofsted carries out a follow-up inspection. I want to assure parents that we will work tirelessly to achieve this. We need to work together to ensure the very best outcomes for all young people who attend the Academy.” Steve Taylor, chief executive of the CLF, said: “While this news is extremely disappointing for all concerned, the Federation will be supporting the Principal, Steve Kneller, and his team as they work through the inspectors’ recommendations as a matter of urgency. I remain absolutely confident that we will get Hanham Woods Academy back on track.”

Digitech judged to need improvement DIGITECH Studio School leaders are disappointed that they have received the second-lowest grade from Ofsted in their first inspection - but they have vowed to ensure the school is good by the next inspection. The school, which opened in 2015 on the site of the former Grange school in Warmley and now has its own purpose-built accommodation there, was rated as Requires Improvement. Digitech is run by the Cabot Learning Federation and specialises in creative and digital media, offering vocational and academic education for students aged 14-19. It has 241 boys and girls on roll. Ofsted highlighted key areas for improvement, including student outcomes, consistency of quality of teaching and provision of post-16 study programmes. Behaviour was said to be good. Steve Taylor, CLF chief executive, said: "All of us associated with Digitech would have preferred for Ofsted to have found the school to already be good at this first visit. Nevertheless, it is clear that so much of what pupils undertake at Digitech represents exciting and cutting edge curriculum and we fully expect the school to be at least good come their next visit." Lis Jolley, principal, said, "Whilst the overall outcome is disappointing, we have come a long way since the opening of the school. The report confirms we are working on the right things."

Change at JCA JOHN Cabot Academy in Kingswood, the founding school in the Cabot Learning Federation, has a new person at the helm following the sudden departure of the principal Simon White. Mr White, who had been at the secondary school for 14 months, resigned and has been replaced by Sally Apps, an executive principal at the federation and formerly principal of the CLF's successful Bristol Metropolitan Academy. CLF's executive director of education Dr Dan Nicholls, in a letter to parents, said: "Sally has a strong record of school improvement and, having worked closely with colleagues at JCA since September, has a good knowledge of our local context." Dr Nicholls thanked Mr White for his hard work and commitment to the academy. JCA is rated Requires Improvement but was said in July to be making progress.

December, 2017 other rings, including one which was an 18th birthday present from her mum. Bryony was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in July 2012, less than a year before her planned wedding to Neal, a baker. At the age of just 23, Bryony endured an eight-and-a-halfhour operation to remove a tumour on the side of her neck and found herself in intensive care for four days. "Throughout my recovery from the surgery and my radioactive treatment, the thing that kept me positive and focused was planning our wedding." As part of her recovery, Bryony and Neal travelled to Bournemouth for an activity holiday with the Youth Cancer Trust. It was there the couple met a fellow guest called Kieran who had been battling a brain tumour. With so much in common, the trio spent the week hanging out together and 35-year-old Kieran became pivotal in choosing the rings. Bryony said: “The three of us walked past the jewellers again

Bryony with husband Neal and daughter Eva and Neal said, 'Come on, let's go in and see if they have your size'. "Funnily enough, the only size they had left was my size! They told us all about the diamond ring and how it had a ruby hidden underneath. I'd already had an engagement ring but it was quite basic and we'd always planned to get another. I tried the ring on, and Kieran told Neal he must buy it for me. Neal

said 'Right, if Kieran says you're having it, you're having it!' Neal then bought it for me with the matching wedding ring." Bryony and Kieran kept in touch, texting and sharing messages on Facebook and following each other's trials and tribulations as they both battled cancer. Then, in March 2013, Bryony received the news she had been

9 hoping for when she was told her cancer was in remission. It meant the couple's wedding could go ahead and they married on May 18, 2013 at St Mary's Church in Bitton. Sadly, Kieran was too ill to travel to the wedding and he eventually lost his fight in February 2015. "Kieran made such an impact on our lives in such a short space of time," Bryony said. "My ring was a reminder of Kieran and how much he fought every day but remained so positive throughout his fight. Kieran had been so determined to beat his cancer. His death is a constant reminder it could have been me and how lucky I am." Bryony, who has been circulating photos of the rings on social media and contacting various pawn brokers, said it uld make her Christmas if she were to be reunited with her rings. Plans for care home in Cadbury Heath MORE than 100 jobs will be created in Cadbury Heath if plans for a 64-bed care home are given the go-ahead. Contracts have now been signed between Brunelcare and Brackley Investments for a proposed care home in Earlstone Crescent, which would be named Little Heath. Proposals also feature a 24bed reablement service which will give support to people who leave hospital but are not yet ready to return home. The plans include demolishing the former councilowned Newton House care home, the Heath Resource Centre and outbuildings to make way for the bespoke facilities. If planning permission is granted, Brackley Investments will develop the buildings to Brunelcare’s specification, which the charity will then lease from them on a 25-year term. It is hoped that the new care home and reablement service will be up and running within

two years. Kevin Fairman, CEO Brunelcare, said: "We will be able to increase the number of care home places Brunelcare currently provides for people in the South West region by 20 per cent, along with expanding our already successful reablement service, supporting people returning home from hospital. "This development will also provide over 100 new job opportunities, for both our

existing employees and new recruits, when we recruit to run this new service." Jeff Moore, principal director of Brackley Investments, said: "Brackley are thrilled to be continuing our investment in care home development in South Gloucestershire – our fourth development in the area and our first for Brunelcare. "We’re honoured to have been chosen as the Trust’s development partner for this

prestigious proposal and our local design team look forward to working with Brunelcare in securing planning permission and delivering this bespoke facility for the people of Cadbury Heath at the earliest opportunity." Cllr Ben Stokes, cabinet member responsible for adult care at South Gloucestershire Council, said: "I am pleased to see that early proposals for the former council-owned site include a reablement facility, as well as a care home, which would provide vital support to people to aid their recovery after an illness which required a hospital stay. "There are a lot of initiatives to help reduce placements into care homes, however with the number of people aged 65 and over set to rise it was a condition of the sale that the land be developed for care use only. This is the third time the council has done this, with other sites at Yate and Kingswood brought forward in recent years."

Action to preserve green spaces NINE green spaces in the Longwell Green ward are among 250 in South Gloucestershire that have gained protection in a new plan. The district’s Policies, Sites and Places (PSP) Plan – which will guide planning decisions over the next ten years – has been formally adopted at full council. It designates selected sites as green spaces. The PSP’s creation took four years, including public consultations and an examination in public by an independent inspector. Councillor Colin Hunt, cabinet member responsible for planning, said: “In drawing up this plan to help guide future sustainable development in South Gloucestershire, we also asked communities to nominate green spaces to be protected. RESIDENTS in Cadbury Heath have expressed concerns over the sudden closure of the popular community cafe at the Batch. Esther's, which had been open seven days a week shut without warning last month, meaning individuals and groups had to change their plans. Members of the Knit and Natter group at Cadbury Heath library said they were upset at the loss of the cafe. "It was a social hub. We were shocked that it closed," they told the Voice. The Batch is run by Banjo Island Community and Sports Association. It is understood that the cafe's contract had been due to end on November 28, from when the association intended to employ its own staff to take over the day-to-day running of the kitchen.

Shoppers boost outdoor classroom fund

CHRISTMAS has come early for pupils at Samuel White's Infant School in Hanham - they've just been given two generous lump sums towards their plans for an outdoor classroom. Staff at the Co-op in Hanham High Street handed over a cheque for a whopping £2,204.98 to the school's Friends group. The money accumulated every time customers at the Co-op store swiped their membership cards during the last six months as part of the retail chain's local community fund. Bryony Davis, chair of Friends of Samuel White's School, said: "Initially we thought we were going to get about £650 but ended up getting more than £2,000! Movember man talk could save your life Make time for man talk! That’s the advice being given to men as part of the national Movember campaign – the month that spotlights men’s health issues. A Movember survey showed that while 70% of men say their friends could rely on them for support only 48% say that they would rely on their friends! In other words men are happy to listen to other people’s problems but not so happy to talk about their own. Professor Hashim Hashim a world-renowned Consultant Urological Surgeon at Spire Bristol Hospital said: “The key to successful treatment is down to men facing up to the fact that they might have a problem and seeking medical help as soon as possible.” “It is well known that men tend to keep things bottled up when it comes to medical issues but that really is the worst thing they can do. Growing a moustache in support of Movember is great but it’s when the talking starts that we

know we are getting somewhere.” Prostate cancer is the commonest type of cancer in men with over 41,000 new cases diagnosed in the UK every year, claiming approximately 10,500 lives. However it’s not just cancer related conditions that affect a man’s prostate. Despite thousands of men suffering from it on a daily basis, an enlarged prostate isn’t exactly the usual choice of conversation over a pint at your local pub. The condition known as benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) and hypertrophy (BPH) does not occur because of the presence of cancer, but due to the fact the prostate continues to grow throughout most of a man’s adult life. The condition itself is not a threat to a man’s health, but it can have dramatic impacts on their quality of life. As the prostate enlarges it can cause pressure on the bladder causing a variety of symptoms

including; having difficulty when starting to urinate; a weak urine flow (stopping and starting); a sensation of not fully emptying your bladder leading to having to urinate more frequently (especially at night), subsequently disrupting your sleeping patterns and likewise that of your partner. A midnight trip to the bathroom is never warmly welcomed by anyone. “Surgery can be fraught with side-effects - bleeding, incontinence and sexual problems - whilst tablets may be ineffective or cause sexual function problems,” said Consultant Urologist, Professor Hashim. There is, however, a revolutionary day-case technique available which is suitable for most men, bringing relief to help them empty their bladders better with improved quality of life and minimal side-effects. “A new treatment called UroLift avoids the invasiveness of surgery and the unwanted side effects of

tablets. It involves no blood loss or 'cutting' and takes 10-15 minutes for implants to be inserted into the prostate, opening the prostatic urethra, restoring urinary flow and satisfactory bladder function.” explained Prof. Hashim “'It is being hailed the new minimally invasive treatment of the future for the majority of those with troublesome symptoms due to BPE(H) - only in rare cases with atypical prostate anatomy is Urolift unsuitable” He continued. UroLift is available at Spire Bristol Hospital and patients can usually be in and out of hospital within the same day. With PC Lee Humphreys

COMMUNITIES who look out for one another and report suspicious incidents are a real deterrent for thieves – it’s why Neighbourhood Watch works so well. We’re grateful to a witness whose call about suspicious behaviour around homes in Hanham led to the arrest of a teenage boy and recovery of stolen property recently. Officers responded and found an abandoned vehicle containing tools stolen from a van in Warmley the same night. At the time of writing our enquiries continue, with the suspect released under investigation. We’ve had reports of near misses involving pedestrians and cyclists riding on the pavement in Longwell Green. People often can’t hear riders coming up behind them and there’s potential for serious injury if there’s an accident. It is an offence to ride on the pavement which could lead to a £50 fine. No one wants their Christmas ruined by crime. We can all take a few steps

to protect our property: • k eep your phone, keys and wallet in an inside pocket and your bag close •p ark in a busy area, always lock your vehicle and don’t leave anything on view •h ide presents safely away until Father Christmas has been, not on view to tempt an opportunist thief And keep ourselves safe on a night out: •e nsure someone knows where you’re going, who with and when you’ll be home • k eep an eye on your wallet, bag, phone and keys • l ook after your friends •d esignate a driver who’ll stick to soft drinks, pre-book a taxi or arrange a lift home • r emember you could still be over the legal limit for driving the morning after We wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Using little pots or just using elastic bands, I group the seeds

into months that they need to be sown, this means that each week, or simply when there’s space in the propagator, I just take the months seeds and sow something new or a successional sowing of one of this years vegetables. The February and March groups are by far the largest and so it takes a bit of planning to assure that I have enough space at any one time. Successional sowing is one of the most important keys to getting a long season out of vegetables, but annuals and perennial plants should really be sown according to the calendar, unless they’re growing under managed conditions. I did say that I’d report back on the grow lights that I acquired from Britain’s favourite (at least most popular) furniture store, and I’m glad to say that they are proving extremely useful. One of the issues that I have is that unless I move new seedlings into the greenhouse, which can get very cold, and is prone to severe slug damage when it’s clement, I have only a room that is insufficiently lit. As it stands I have lettuce, Rudbeckias, Chilli, Antirrhinum and various other seedlings all growing nicely, until they are big enough for the big time, or simply get moved because of space. I make my own seed compost from leaf mould from the allotment, perlite and a www.doorexpresssouthwest.co.uk little compost. The proportions

are not an exact science, but as seedlings contain all of the energy and nutrients that they need to get going, you don’t want to give them anything too rich. This is why the leaf mould makes a good base and something for the roots to get started in, the perlite is there to add drainage and prevent water logging. I tend to use something in the region of 2:2:1 of leaf mould, perlite and compost but equal yourself with some of these. proportions would be fine, most • Force rhubarb as it should be plants aren’t too fussy. n VETS' ADVICE

Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Dr Nic Walton MRCVS Highcroft Veterinary Group

CATS are naturally solitary animals, yet a recent survey found that 44% of cat-owning households has more than one cat. Cats in general prefer not to fight. Instead they use visual and audible communication to avoid physical confrontations. Sharing a home can be difficult for cats and can result in stress-related behaviours, such as urine marking, and/or inter-cat aggression. Limited space in our homes can make it difficult for cats to avoid each other so it’s important to ensure that each cat has access to exit/entry points to the home, without having to interact with each other. The general rule of thumb for litter trays, food and water bowls is one for each cat and one spare. For example two cats require three litter trays, food and water bowls. This gives them more choice and more freedom. As well as physical aggression, cats can show aggression subtly such as blocking each other, staring, spending most of the time up high or hiding, changes in eating and grooming habits, or stress-related behaviours. Aggression can often be seen in cats when they first meet and between cats that have previously been friendly but an event has resulted in aggression. These events

If it’s News call 07919 199565 or 07880 731148

can include changes in the home (such as renovation) or when a cat returns from time away (such as at the vets). Aggression can also be as a result of pain or an underlying medical problem, so it is advisable for cats to be examined by their vet. In addition, when a new cat is brought home and introduced to a resident cat, aggression can be due to territorial and/or fear related issues. What can I do to help? Firstly, cats should be separated to prevent injury and further damage to their relationship. Avoid punishing the cats for fighting as arousal, anxiety and the risk of injury increases. Cats use scents known as pheromones to communicate with each other and to reassure themselves. By scent swapping, you can reacquaint each cat without any physical contact. This involves rubbing a cotton cloth under the chin of one of the cats and then leaving it in the room with the other cat and vice versa. During this time, each cat should have access to their own feeding bowl, water bowl, litter tray etc. Use the door that physically separates the cats to encourage peaceful coexistence. Over time,

controlled contact between the cats should be increased, e.g. cats on harnesses, highly palatable food at separate ends of a large room. Gradually reduce the distance between the cats, assessing them for any reactivity towards each other. Once there is no tension when they are relatively close, try to allow the cats to have monitored free access to each other. It can be difficult to predict how well the cats will get on and sometimes the relationship will not be repaired so it may be best for one of the cats to be rehomed. A synthetic pheromone can a very useful extra tool for you. This is a copy of the natural pheromone which is released by a mother when she is nursing her kittens, to encourage a feeling of safety, relationship bonding and happiness. This synthetic copy (Feliway Friends) is available as a diffuser which should be plugged in the area where cats spend most of their time (usually where they sleep) and has been shown to reduce signs of aggression between resident cats. If your cats show aggressive tendencies and you would like more information, please do hesitate to contact Longwell Green Veterinary Centre on 0117 932 3660 and ask to speak to a practice nurse.

December, 2017

Reflecting on the past year

Chris Skidmore Kingswood MP writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

WITH Christmas just around the corner and the colder days and nights drawing in I wanted to start this month’s column by wishing all Hanham and Longwell Green residents a very happy Christmas and New Year. With so much having happened this year I see this as a valuable opportunity to look back and see how things have moved forwards both locally and nationally. 2017 has been a very busy year on both the personal and political fronts, with both my children, Clementine and Henry, now three and one, my wife Lydia and I have been balancing work and hectic home life. Of course, the General Election in May was a particularly busy time as I travelled across the constituency knocking on doors and speaking to people from right across the local area. I was very humbled to have been re-elected to represent our constituency for the third time running. I’d like to thank all those constituents who voted for me, I was absolutely delighted

to increase my share of the vote in our area from 48% in 2015 to nearly 55% this year with over 26,750 people choosing to vote for me. I am very grateful that, for the first time since 2010, the majority of local voters chose me as their candidate. Having served you for seven years as your MP, I understand the great responsibility I have in helping to look after our area. As someone who was born locally in Longwell Green, grew up here, and who has lived here all my life, there is no greater honour that the represent you as your Member of Parliament. On the local front in Hanham and Longwell Green, as many will know, I have long campaigned for the old Kleeneze site in Hanham to be regenerated. Throughout my campaign for the site, I have always been very clear about the need for any new project to include adequate parking provision in order to support the vibrant high street. With Tesco having decided not

to go ahead with the new store on the site, I am pleased that the Homes and Communities Agency has acquired the land for development and I have already made the case for additional parking very clear in my initial dialogue with them. I know just how important it is not only for local businesses but also for local shoppers that they can easily find a space to park whilst visiting the High Street. I was also very pleased to have been able to personally welcome a number of new shops to the High Street in Hanham and look forward to working with traders in order to see what can be done to support them in their valuable role. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all those local residents who took the time to sign my petition which called for greater safeguards for the Greenbelt around Hanham Hills and the Hanham Nature Reserve. As someone who was born and grew up locally, I understand just how important our green

December, 2017 spaces are for the community and I am committed to ensuring that they are preserved for future generations to enjoy. With over 1,000 local people signing my petition to South Gloucestershire Council, I was delighted by the level of local engagement which clearly demonstrated the strength of feeling on the matter. More recently, I have met with the Minister of State for Housing and Planning in order to further my case and to push for more protections for our valuable green spaces. I have also had a busy year in my role as a minister in the Cabinet Office, with responsibility for democratic engagement and voting reform, I have been working towards making it easier for people with disabilities to register to vote and to cast their vote itself. Over the past few months, I have been working alongside the Royal National Institute of Blind People in order to ensure that visually impaired people get information in the format they need in order to break down any barriers they may face in

engaging with the democratic process. This will mean that, for the first time, councils like South Gloucestershire will be able to provide extra help and support to people who may need it in order to participate in our elections. This will be an important step forwards in removing any existing barriers to democratic participation and I am proud to be leading the way on projects like this. Finally, I was delighted to hold this year’s Christmas Grotto at my office as part of the Hanham Christmas Fair which took place on Saturday December 2 and I’d like to thank all those who put so much work in to ensuring that the day went ahead this year. I would like to wish readers a great year ahead for 2018 and if there are ever any issues that you would like to raise with me then please do not hesitate to drop into one of my local surgeries, alternatively you can reach me on 0117 908 1524 or by emailing me at chris@chrisskidmore.com Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

n BOOK REVIEW

A Summer at Sea by Katie Fforde Emily loves her job as a midwife but is ready for a change. When she is invited to help out a friend by becoming a cook on a “puffer” - an old steam boat cruising the lochs in Scotland- she jumps at the chance. Although Emily knows that she will only be there for a few months before returning to her job down south she finds herself increasingly drawn to the beauty of the area … and to the dark handsome doctor who is her friend’s brother-in-law. As Emily and Alasdair become increasingly attracted to one another they have to work out if their romance is just a holiday fling, or something more meaningful. Can Emily really give up the job she loves to return to Scotland, especially as she has just been offered a great promotion? This is a wonderful holiday read. The characters are beautifully drawn and the story is light and frothy in a very enjoyable way. Julie, Hanham Library

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM (EVENING) WI "WHERE has the last year gone?" That was the thought on the minds of many members at the branch AGM as they reflected on memorable meetings and events of 2017. The meeting also saw new members join the management committee and new officers elected to key positions. Pam Hunt, a long-time member of the Hanham branch, was elected as president succeeding

December, 2017

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY Mary Cottrell. Mary, who had served eight years as president, felt it was time to step down and let someone else take the helm. She will be staying on as a committee member taking on the role of finding and organising speakers. Arts and crafts, garden ornaments, paintings and jewellery were some of the stalls that made the branch autumn fayre the success it was. The event was well supported, not just by local people but many from further afield. They came to take advantage of early Christmas shopping, pick up a bargain or just chat with friends over a cup of coffee - and of course a piece of WI cake. It was encouraging to see many stallholders reserve tables for next year. The branch would like to thank all who came and the local businesses who helped to promote the day. Our final event of the year will be our Christmas meal at the Grassmere Hotel in Keynsham. Dianna Coles

OUR November topic was Cleeve and Beaufort Military Hospital. Roger Angerson gave an excellent presentation supported with photographic slides and we heard that in 1915, when the other Bristol hospitals could not cope with the increasing influx of casualties, Bristol Lunatic Asylum (Glenside Hospital) was converted at War Office expense into a military hospital with 1,460 beds for the general medical and surgical treatment of sick and wounded soldiers. The Duke of Beaufort allowed his title to be used for the new establishment. The existing mental patients had been dispersed throughout the West Country. Cleve Hill House in Downend had been offered as a hospital and was incorporated into the Beaufort. The greatest number of patients under the roof of the Beaufort War Hospital on one night was 1,487. Thirty beds were reserved for mental cases among local troops and in 1917 a ward of ten beds was established for cases of sickness among the German prisoners of war in the labour camps near Bristol. The first convoy of wounded was received on May 24, 1915 and the military hospital closed in February 1919. Over that period, 29,433 patients were admitted and 164 deaths recorded, of which 30 were civilian emergencies from the influenza epidemic of 1918. The authorities tried to send men needing treatment as near to their own homes as possible, so many of the soldiers would have been local, however their was also a huge contingent of Australians and Canadians. Once the military had left, the hospital reverted to the care of mental patients. On December 5 we will have our AGM, Christmas raffle and American supper, followed on December 6 by our Christmas meal at the Severn Valley Railway. Both surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month (March-December), at 7.30pm, in Room 4 at the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the Civic Centre, BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www. kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is ÂŁ2.50 per visit including tea/coffee and biscuits. Annual subscription is ÂŁ20. Paul Hanmore

Jazz event proves popular for Jessie May MUSIC lovers raised £600 for Jessie May following a jazz concert in Longwell Green. Around 120 people supported the charity at the event which was held at Longwell Green Community Centre in November. It was organised by Jack and Molly Cox who have been running this style of entertainment in the area to raise money for local charities for nearly 20 years. The music was provided by the Roger Wells Hotshots who entertained with a varied programme of traditional jazz numbers. Molly said it was the first time the community centre had been used for one of their ventures and had proved a success: "The staff at the community centre worked hard to contribute to the success of the evening. "Fish and chips were enjoyed in the interval and thanks go to the Oldfield shops in Longwell Green and Oldland for cooking and delivering the food on time and to the staff at the community centre for plating it up. "The evening was a great success and raised over £600, including a bucket collection, for Jessie May." Another concert is planned for March 9, 2018 at the same venue, when the band will be Jeremy Huggett’s Dart Valley Stompers.

n NEWS THE star of TV’s Blackadder and Time Team, Sir Tony Robinson, reveals many of Bristol’s hidden historical secrets in a DVD released this month. Director Martin Weitz says the rediscovered and reworked film is an extraordinary record of Bristol’s amazing history, capturing rare images of the city which could not be filmed nowadays; including access to

the secret tunnels and rivers under the city centre and a scene shot inside the pump room of the 18th century Hotwells Spa. The film captures Tony’s passion for history combined with his sense of humour - for example when he goes on board the ss Great Britain, he gives

a recitation of an poem about a roly-poly pudding in pure Blackadder style. There’s a breathtaking ascent to the top of the Cabot Tower and an eye-opening visit to St Mary Redcliffe Church where he meets up with his alter ego, Baldrick’s “old friend Queenie”.

Tony Robinson also delves into the Slave Trade when he visits Henbury Churchyard, in search of the grave of Scipio Africanus, a young slave brought to the city. Sir Tony Robinson’s famed History of Bristol is available from selected retailers for £9.99. It can also be ordered online from Amazon.co.uk and from www.focusproductions.co.uk

Tel: 0117 9603253 - email: beaanews@gmail.com www.bristoleastallotments.com COMPOSTING to some gardeners is a chore, while many find it baffling. With others it is an obsession whose sole ambition is to produce a nutrient rich material from almost anything that comes to hand! Whole books have been written on the subject of turning garden waste into compost, but there is nothing mysterious about the process, it’s just a matter of getting the ingredients right. Almost anything that has originated from the soil can be included, up to about 50% of the mix; these are the ‘greens’ the rest needs to be ‘browns’ consisting of shredded paper, scrunched newspaper, straw or plain brown unprinted cardboard to mention a few. Adding woody, twig cuttings in small amounts is useful as these allow air into the heap. Bulk grass cuttings should be avoided as this simply turns into a soggy mess; better mix it with some browns before adding. Any green kitchen waste can also go into your bin, vegetable peelings and tea bags, however the material they are made from can take an age to decompose. Avoid adding cooked food as this will attract vermin. Coffee shops are a great source of material for composting, seen as a neutral, coffee grounds help absorb moisture if everything is too wet. The shops are pleased to give them away as it saves on their waste disposal costs. Many small cafés can easily produce several kilos a week, one shop in the area has approached us and offered theirs on a regular basis if anyone would like to collect it, let us know if you could be interested.

AERIAL SPECIALIST

Purpose made plastic composters are ideal in gardens, but for a larger plot old pallets tied together in a square pen will work effectively. Whichever method you choose your waste will quickly start its decomposition process, even in winter your heap can easily reach an internal temperature of between 50 and 60C. If you would like to read up on it we’ll be pleased to let you know which books are a good buy. Making compost is far easier than digging, in fact these days I rarely dig at all! Earlier this year I prepared beds, four feet across and the width of my plot with woodchip paths between the beds. With no wooden sides to the beds time and cost are saved, there is nothing to rot or anywhere for slugs to hide, the level of the beds were raised a few inches simply by adding homemade compost as described above. The results have been above expectations and weeding with a hoe has been quick and easy. No dig gardening has been practised extensively for many years by Charles Dowding; the vegetable produce from his garden in Somerset can only be described as ‘exceptional’. Having appeared on television, written in magazines and published several books Charles has offered to supply our allotment shop with signed copies of two of his best-selling titles in

APPLIANCE REPIRS

From plot to plate, veg can’t get any fresher

time for Christmas. One is How To Create a New Vegetable Garden, useful for both the beginner and even the most seasoned gardeners. The other is Charles Dowding’s Vegetable Garden Diary, not so much a diary in the day to day sense of the word but a manual of gardening to inform and inspire that is packed with illustrations. Call in to our shop and take look, either will make a superb Christmas present. Regular readers may remember our No Dig potato trial this year. Our beds were cleared of any weeds, a hole about 4 -6inches deep was made for each seed, then earthed-up using homemade compost. This produced a more than acceptable crop of all the varieties we planted. Needless to say, we’ll be adopting the same method next year. Our main crops were Majestic and King Edward; these are just two of more than thirty-five varieties that will be available at our Potato Sale starting from 11am to 3pm on New Year’s Day, continuing every Saturday and Sunday morning thereafter. Our complete list of all varieties is now available and if you would like a copy call in and see us, or we can email it to you. You’ll be able to select as many or as few seed potatoes as you need so it’s a great way to experiment with different varieties, or if you only have a small space and want to grow them in bags. Our kitchen will be open serving bacon butties and veggie soup. But in the meantime we wish everyone a very Happy Christmas!
