Taking steps to help others Life is not slowing down yet for Longwell Green's Claudia Fragapane, 19. Fresh from competing in gymnastics for Team GB at the Rio Olympics and dancing her way to the semi-finals of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, the "Pocket Rocket" presented an award to Ellie Simmonds on the BBC's Young Sports Personality of the Year and, above, opened a new high dependency unit at Bristol Children's Hospital.

Nurseries shut their doors

THE owners of the Redroofs Nurseries in Warmley and St George, which were closed temporarily while the watchdog Ofsted carried out an investigation into alleged force feeding of a child, have decided to close the business for good. Lesley Bates told the Voice that they made the decision to retire after her husband Roger, 76, was admitted to hospital with a suspected heart attack. "We just couldn't cope with the strain of it [the investigation]," she said. Mrs Bates said all 175 parents of children at the nursery supported her. Full story: Pages 2 and 3

LESLEY and Roger Bates opened Redroofs Nursery in Warmley 37 years ago. Ten years later saw the opening of a branch along the Kingsway, St George. These were popular nurseries, offering parents in both areas, and further afield, much-needed childcare. Government watchdog Ofsted deemed the nurseries to be 'good' then later gave them the ultimate accolade of 'outstanding'. It was no wonder mums and dads wanted their children to go there. But in September, a parttime member of staff reported Mrs Bates for force-feeding a child who had special needs. Ofsted became involved and temporarily closed both nurseries while an investigation took place. The couple appealed and although nothing had been proven against Mrs Bates, the Care Standards Tribunal upheld the decision saying the temporary closure was "proportionate". The suspension was due to expire on December 15, but could have been cut short, or extended, depending on the findings of a full investigation. Several days before the

expiry date, Mr and Mrs Bates announced they would be retiring. Their decision meant as they were no longer the registered providers, the investigation automatically ceased, something Mrs Bates says Ofsted has not informed them of. Mrs Bates, 71, said the decision to retire had been prompted after 76-year-old Mr Bates was recently taken into hospital with a suspected heart attack. "The accusations are just not true," she said. "We've been treated so badly. It's been horrendous and it's caused us a great deal of heartache. "When my husband came out of hospital after being taken ill, we sat down and thought we just couldn't go on like this. I didn't want to retire; I love working with children and have worked with them all my life but we just couldn't cope with the strain of it." That's part of the truth, but the other part is that the Bates didn't really have a business to go back to. "How could we open after six weeks, with no staff and no

Redroofs." Mrs Bates said there had been "horrible" comments on social media which have added to the couple's stress. "I'm 71 so I don't do social media but my son and grandson have looked at some of the comments out there and these people are trolls. There is not one name that we recognise that has ever come to Redroofs Nursery." The couple made it their priority to pay back all they money owed to parents who have paid up for childcare in advance. Even the presents which Mrs Bates had bought for the children's annual party at Hanham Folk Centre, which did not go ahead, have been given to charity. "I just want parents to know that the 175 presents I bought for the children have been donated to the Red Cross to sell in their shops to help refugee children." Lack of income has meant the couple has sold the Kingsway branch to another nursery provider and they haven't ruled out having to put Warmley on the market, the property which is also their home. "We are selling the Kingsway with all our wonderful facilities. It's all subject to contracts but hopefully by the end of February there will be another nursery there. "We will not move out of the area - we will stay locally because my family are here and I want to be around my grandchildren. "I don't know what we are going to do in the future but I do know I will miss the children so much. Ofsted could not be contacted for confirmation that the inquiry had been dropped.

customers? All my parents had to find other nurseries," Mrs Bates said. Mrs Bates has little good to say about Ofsted and has likened the watchdog's interviews with members of her staff to "interrogations". "My staff were in tears, it was so awful. We were treated like criminals. "The Warmley nursery had been outstanding for eight years and four years at the Kingsway. Ofsted took none of that into consideration. "It was just an allegation by a part-time member of staff. Other members of staff were with me at the time - we don't work in isolation, we all safeguard ourselves - and wrote written statements in support. "We know that it (forcefeeding) would never take place - and it didn't; it really didn't. It was somebody's interpretation." Mrs Bates said she has been overwhelmed by the support she has received from parents, many of whom have written to Ofsted. "My parents have been incredible. I've had the support of all of my 175 parents - none of them believed it happened. I know Ofsted have had so many calls and letters from my parents who have told them that they have given no thought to the parents who have had to go and find other places. "I've had such lovely cards of support. I just had one from a parent who lives in Keynsham but used Redroofs. She wrote about what wonderful starts we gave to her children. "We invited parents to the nursery just before Christmas to pick up their children's profiles and they were all saying that the other nurseries they have gone to just aren't the same as

With a string of outstanding Ofsted ratings under their belt, accusations of force feeding a child have taken their toll on Roger and Lesley Bates, owners of Redroofs nurseries. Amid an Ofsted investigation, they decided enough was enough and announced their retirement. The couple has always protested their innocence. Generous locals offer toys and cash for blaze victims KIND-HEARTED people have rallied round to provide cash, toys, furniture and household goods for the family after the fire tore through their Warmley house two weeks before Christmas. Dad Martin Doherty, his partner Tanya Cornford and children Skye, 16, Paige, 12 and four-year-old Lily Rose, were left with nothing following the blaze, which destroyed every room apart from the kitchen. A fellow parent from Lily-Rose's school set up online fundraising pages, including a public Facebook page - Warmley family house fire please support - and organised an "as new" sale. A Justgiving page has also been set up and has raised £1,000 and a Gofundme site has collected around £100. The family have been given temporary accommodation. Writing on the Facebook page, Tanya said she was hugely relieved that they had all got out of the blazing house unharmed "Thanks again to everyone who's helping right now. We really appreciate it! Massively! On a high note we are in temp accommodation, we won't be homeless for Christmas! This is a huge relief that we can all be together."

Five gold rings ... but are they Fairtrade?

MOST of us now know about Fairtrade tea and coffee – but have you heard about Fairtrade gold? If not, let the children of Christ Church Juniors in Downend explain. They are helping to get the message out in 2017 about the issues surrounding gold mining. Asked to give reasons why they would prefer to buy a Fairtrade ring for someone they loved, Year 5 pupils came up with comments such as “because you are not just caring for your loved one, you are caring for the miners” and “a Fairtrade ring means the mines are much safer”. Jonathan Seagrave, one of the local organisers of the Fairtrade Fortnight, said: “I've got a feeling this will be the next big thing. If you a buying a ring for someone you love, do you want it to contain mercury or cyanide or to have poisoned someone along the way? I think people will pay a bit more to be sure that miners work in conditions that meet standards and can get a fair price for their product.” The Christ Church children have made a large piece of Fairtrade gold themed artwork that forms the centrepiece of a display touring South Gloucestershire libraries between now and the end of February. The exhibition, launched at Downend Library,

illustrates some of the problems of small scale gold mining, mercury use and how simple technology can make artisan mining much safer and acquire Fairtrade status. Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Councillor Erica Williams said: “It was a pleasure to visit Downend Library with the local school children and view this fantastic exhibition, which includes the beautiful artwork that they worked hard to create.

£27k bill as landlords fail to improve Linden Hotel LANDLORDS of the former Linden Hotel in Kingswood face a bill of almost £27,000 for breaching regulations - including fire safety. Bhahinder Singh Dulay and Munjit Singh Dulay, trading as M B Estate Ltd, were found guilty in their absence when the case was heard at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Friday December 9. The landlords, of Rudgeway, South Gloucestershire, were prosecuted for failure to comply with an improvement notice, including a category 1 fire hazard, and incurred fines and costs totalling £26,761.61. The property is a large former hotel in the High Street that has been converted into 22 self-contained flats, which are occupied mainly by young couples and families. The court heard that South Gloucestershire Council was asked to visit Linden House following complaints of disrepair and poor management

received from tenants and the Neighbourhood Beat Officer for the area. Officers visited the property to assess if there were any hazards that posed a risk to the health and safety of the tenants and any visitors to the property. Several issues were identified including fire hazards, risk of falls, damp and mould. The landlord M B Estate

Ltd was contacted about these issues on several occasions, but no repairs were completed and the landlord failed to attend any meetings to discuss matters. Following inspections of the property, an enforcement notice was served but to date, none of the work required to bring the property up to scratch has been satisfactorily carried out. For failure to comply with the

fire hazard, the court imposed a fine of £15,000. For failure to comply with the repair hazards, the court imposed a fine of £10,000. In addition, the company have to pay a victim surcharge of £170 and South Gloucestershire Council was awarded full costs of £1,591.61. South Gloucestershire Council’s Environment & Community Services Committee chairwoman Councillor Heather Goddard said: “As in all cases we try to resolve issues informally with the landlord, but MB Estates failed to engage with officers and carry out the necessary improvements to the property. This case sends out a strong message that South Gloucestershire Council will not tolerate landlords who fail to comply with their legal responsibilities. Avon Fire and Rescue Service are also considering possible enforcement action against the landlords.

Cook more from scratch – not all processed food is the enemy, but most modern convenience food contains too much sugar, too much cheap flour and too many preservatives. Eating at least one healthy homecooked meal a day will immediately benefit your health. Cut sugar and artificial sweeteners from your drinks. They have both been linked to obesity, migraine and an increased risk of cancer. Eat more fruit and veg – phytochemical compounds consumed in fresh fruit and veg not only protect you from cancer, they also help the body to fight existing tumours. Fruit and vegetables should make up a large proportion of your daily diet.

Clean eating: It doesn't have to cost a fortune

A BIOMEDICAL scientist from Mangotsfield is offering free healthy eating advice via her website. Sonia Nicholas, 37, runs the Green Apple Club online community, providing nutritional advice and recipes for people who want to improve their health. After 10 years working at Bath’s Royal United Hospital, plus further work as a science writer and clinical editor, she decided to combine her medical knowledge with her personal interest in healthy eating. She said: “People are bombarded with lots of information on how to eat, but a lot of it isn’t based on science. “Our diet in the past 30 years has changed beyond recognition. Even our own grandparents would have had a vastly different diet to now, when so much of what we eat is processed. “It’s not a coincidence that the past 30 years have also seen a

rise in obesity, cancer and other health problems, as our bodies struggle to cope with all the rubbish we feed them.” Sonia advocates a “clean eating” approach, avoiding refined sugar, white refined carbohydrates, artificial sweeteners, preservatives and additives. To prove that eating a healthier diet doesn’t need to be expensive, all the recipes on thegreenappleclub.com show the price per portion, such as beef casserole for £1.21, macaroni cheese for 45p and home-made baked beans for 49p. Sonia said: “You don’t have to shop in health-food stores and get specialist ingredients to eat a healthy diet. “Everything I’ve used in the recipes comes from normal supermarkets, and the recipes work out even cheaper if you shop at budget supermarkets.” Particularly popular amongst

members of the Green Apple Club is the 28-day clean eating challenge, where participants choose to follow one of a range of menu plans for a month and receive support from each other via the website and private social media groups. The next challenge group starts this month. The website, launched a year ago, has been a hobby for Sonia until now. In 2017 she hopes to start earning money from the site by allowing advertising and through an online shop selling her newly-released cookbook, Clean Eating Recipes For Home Cooks, and other healthy-eating publications. thegreenappleclub.com

Seek a healthy balance for 2017 ARE you ready to take on 2017? Is this going to be your year? Last week I sat in a local cafe and listened to two mums talking about how 2017 was going to be their year of getting fit and how by April they were to run a marathon and drop a good deal of weight. I could hear the excitement in their voices at what lay ahead and was inspired by their energy, but at the same time felt their expectations were extremely high. You see the one word that was missing in the conversation was ‘balance’, the key word that will make targets achievable. So how can you take a balanced approach to a healthier lifestyle and make your goal become a reality this forthcoming year? n Small changes – yes these changes can often make the biggest impact. Start walking – stop driving – be honest with yourself – how many times do you take your car out for a five-minute

journey, when it would have actually been quicker walking than trying to find a parking space. Not only are you helping yourself/your children but also your environment. Stop using the lifts and start using the stairs, start parking further away in the car parks, start moving. n Snack replacements – say goodbye to salt and sugary snacks and say hello to fruit and vegetable snacks – not only are they full of essential vitamins they are actually cheaper. n Exercise – find one you enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it, it simply will not last. You are giving up your valuable time and quite often your well earned money, so make sure it is for you and makes you feel great. n Rest - work hard, play hard but rest well; it’s essential. Do you need to keep your phone on next to your bed? n Plan – my favourite word! Plan

your week, your meals, your exercise, your recreational activities – it will make your life easier and it will be easier for you to stay on track. n Support – I can guarantee if you want to make a fresh start and start to lead a healthier lifestyle that some of your family/friends will too. Build your support network.Find something you enjoy as a family – adventurous walks – it costs nothing. n Make it work for you. The biggest excuse people will use is ‘I don’t have time’; it simply is that, an excuse. If you want to make a change badly enough you will find the time. Try walking up and down your stairs five times while the kettle is boiling. n A positive mind creates a positive attitude – you can do this and you will! n Never done exercise before and would like some financial support to kick-start your

bands, a drum group, rock bands, and soloists were also featured. Mr Warren said: “This concert is part of the continuing work between King’s Oak Academy and our partner primaries which covers many areas of the curriculum. The students, pupils and staff really enjoyed

the day and worked really well together. They put on a fantastic performance thoroughly enjoyed by the audience, who also joined in”. A silver collection was made in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust, the chosen charity of King’s Oak music department.

Students help the homeless STUDENTS at Bristol Brunel Academy decided to do their bit to help homeless people in the city over the festive season. They collected so many cereals, drinks, custard, coffee, sugar, biscuits, chocolates and other goodies that they needed two minibuses to transport it to Caring at Christmas. The shelter is run by the Julian Trust and others to provide accommodation, food, medical services and entertainment. It was open from Christmas Eve until New Year's Day and was expecting to serve about 500 hot meals per day. Katherine Hawke, teacher of Humanities who organised this, said: “Our students and their families have done brilliantly in collecting this amount of food for such a worthy cause. It is important that we raise the awareness of this charity to our students and the brilliant work it carries out each year.”

n NEWS WHEN Ann Walker opened Trez-Ann hair salon in Staple Hill in the late 1960s, Mary Quant's geometric bob was all the rage. Since then, Ann has seen hair fashions change like the wind - from the long straight hippy styles of the seventies and the spiral perms of the 1980s to the 'Rachel' cut of the 1990s and, more recently, the trend for ombre hair colour. But 47 years later, Ann has finally decided to hang up her scissors and retire. Ann opened the salon in Victoria Street with husband Keith in 1969 and continued to work there when her daughter Lisa Franklin took over in 2003. After moving to West Huntspill in 2014, Ann has been travelling in two days a week to work at the salon. Remarkably, Ann, who is now a widow, has been cutting the hair of six clients for more than 40 years with two of these visiting Ann as teenagers since the salon opened. Ann, who was 65 on December 18, said: "I've been in the shop since I was 18, so felt

I loved teaching them and have totally enjoyed all my time here." Ann and Keith bought the salon, which came with a twobedroom flat, shortly after they tied the knot. As their family grew with daughter Lisa and sons Neil and Mark, the couple extended the property, with Lisa starting work there 29 years ago and Neil doing a stint as a Saturday boy as a youngster. In 2003, Ann and Keith decided to take a break so Lisa and her builder husband Paul took over. Paul used his building expertise to renovate the property into a separate flat and shop and then made the salon bigger. Ann said although hairstyles have changed over the years, there is one which keeps coming

back in fashion. "The bob is the most in demand hairstyle. It comes in and out of fashion all the time, all with different variations - long versions, short versions, layered versions. I've seen them all! "I enjoy cutting the most but I also love doing wedding hair. It's a speciality and I've done loads over the years." Ann said she will miss the buzz of working in a friendly and busy salon: "It'll be sad to leave. I will miss the banter, the girls and obviously the clients. I shall have to find something else to do as I don't want to be a couch potato. I love socialising and would like to take up yoga again and do all the things I've just not had the time to do." Lisa, 45, who has two children, Courtney and Archie, said: "Mum has been saying she will retire so many times so we all say 'We'll believe it when we see it' but now she's been telling everyone so this time it's finally

wanted to give it a more modern name, but it wouldn't be right. "Working with mum is all I know. We're going to miss her a lot." Ann's last day at work is December 30 when she will be celebrating with a get together at the salon with some of her clients.

HANHAM (EVENING) WI

FOUR firefighters from the Kingswood station tackled the 5k (three mile) Pomphrey Hill parkrun course dressed top to toe in fire fighting equipment weighing in excess of 20kg (3 stone)! Andy Baker, Scott Cole, Tony Wittcomb and Sean Kendall took on the challenge a week before Christmas to raise awareness of fire safety. Fire is one of the most serious hazards associated with Christmas. You are up to 50 per cent more likely to die in a house fire over Christmas than at any other time of year. A combination of smoking and drinking alcohol are well-known risk factors, but candle fires also claim lives each year. After completing the course at Mangotsfield, Andy, a crew manager for Avon Fire and Rescue and a running enthusiast, said that the experience was exhausting. He added: "Although the run was tiring and challenging, it was a good way to replicate the arduous nature of our job. It's great to engage with the local community and promote fire safety." Running in full kit would be the equivalent of running in an oven glove whilst carrying twenty bags of granulated sugar. The firefighters each expended more than 1100 calories in 33 minutes the time that Andy and his colleagues crossed the

Firefighters in hot pursuit of safety message finish line. Andy was cheered on by members of his running club, the Stanbridge Fliers, as well as other runners and the marsalls from Staple Hill Runners. He said: 'Thirty three minutes is a great time in which to complete this tough, hilly course and it'll help me get a personal best here next week! " I've been running with the Fliers for a while now and it was great to have them here in such great numbers to support us." CHRISTMAS celebrations were the focus of Branch activities during the month of December. St Patrick’s Church in Redfield hosted the Group’s annual Christmas concert which was organised by the St George Branch. Members enjoyed many of their favorite hymns and carols which were interspersed with seasonal readings. The evening closed with time for people to catch up with friends, old and new, over coffee and mince pies. Everybody agreed this was a really good start to the festive season. More Ding Dong Merrily on High than Silent Night as Branch members got together for their annual Christmas meal. Once again this was held at The Chequers Inn, Hanham following the lovely time the Branch enjoyed there last Christmas. Crackers and corny jokes helped to keep more than 50 members entertained during an evening of festive fun and fine food. The well-presented traditional fayre was served in ample portions to everyone’s satisfaction and washed down with a glass or two of their favorite tipple! So much better than a secret Santa ... STAFF at The Tynings primary school in Staple Hill decided not to give each other Secret Santa gifts this Christmas. But it certainly wasn't a case of bah humbug because instead they donated 22 shoe boxes to homeless charity Julian House. Staff said they had got great satisfaction from knowing the shoe boxes would help men and women in need: “We were so pleased to do this and did it instead of giving each other secret Santa gifts. "Putting the boxes together meant a lot to us and helped bring the whole staff team together knowing we were giving to people less fortunate than ourselves. When we were wrapping we had a conveyor system of putting the items into boxes, wrapping and decorating. "A member of staff’s own children joined us on two occasions to help wrap and the children said it made them feel happy to help others too.” Alexis Woodward, from Julian

House, said “The staff have been really kind to put the shoe boxes together. They’ve all put a great deal of thought and effort into the boxes and the wrapping looks lovely. These shoe boxes have been taken to our night hostel in Bath and will mean a great deal

n LETTER FROM OUR MP

Positive news on danger drivers

closely with their families, fighting to change the dangerous driving laws so that those who kill or main on the roads through reckless or dangerous driving, should face the full force of the law. At the moment, the maximum sentence for death by dangerous driving is 14 years: Ross and Clare’s killer got just 10 years and 6 months, and may be out in half of that time. This is clearly unacceptable: over recent years, I have called debates in Parliament, raised the issue at Prime Minister’s Questions, delivered a petition of 20,000 local residents to 10 Downing Street, and even met with the former Prime Minister, together with the families, to press the case for change. So I was delighted when the government announced in December that they are formally reviewing dangerous driving laws. But the campaign cannot end there - the consultation is running to February 1, 2017, and I would encourage all constituents who wish to have their say to get involved by contacting me or going on the Ministry of Justice website www.consult.justice.gov.uk Locally, while it was a shame that the Hanham Christmas Fair was cancelled due to a refusal to allow the road to be closed, it was great to see many traders staging a late night shopping evening. It’s been four months since I first moved into my new MP office on 60 High Street, Hanham, and we’ve had such a warm welcome. The High Street has a real community feel, and I was delighted to support Small Business Saturday by visiting John Wood’s Cycle Repair Shop- a great local store. I also wanted to let residents

Marathon mission to help hospital A SCHOOLBOY who was born with a rare heart condition has made a brilliant start to 2017 he's raised more than £2,000 to help other poorly children. Charlie Andrews-Brown has hypo-plastic left heart syndrome which means he only has half a working heart. The 11-year-old, a Year 7 student at King's Oak Academy, has endured six operations including three open heart surgeries and tasks most youngsters take for granted, like running and playing, cause him to become breathless, making everyday life very difficult. But despite this, Charlie has completed half a marathon in five stages to raise money for Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal. The day after Charlie was born he was transferred from St Michael's Hospital in Bristol by flashing ambulance to Birmingham Children's Hospital where he stayed for six weeks. It was to be the first of many hospital visits for Charlie but

with the dedicated support of his family and friends he has learnt not to feel sorry for himself but to think of others. This was to be the motivating factor when Charlie decided to raise money for the cardiac unit at Bristol Children's Hospital. Mum Karen Thomas said: "Charlie has has lots of operations and three major heart surgeries which have all been carried out at Birmingham and Bristol's children's hospitals. "He's doing really well but he finds life a bit difficult and struggles with every day activities. He can run around but gets very tired and breathless and also gets blurred vision and migraines. "Myself and Charlie's dad Michael sat down with Charlie and told him how lucky he is as he is in good health considering the condition he has. A lot of children with his condition don't leave hospital or don't even make it. "We discussed doing something which would be

rewarding for him and he suggested raising money for charity. He decided he wanted to raise it for Ward 32, a cardiac ward at Bristol Children's Hospital where he had an operation last year." Charlie, from Downend, started his mission on November 18 and every weekend since he has walked a few miles until surpassing his target by reaching just over 16 miles on December 17 when he tackled Ashton Court before stopping off at The Ashton pub with friends and family to celebrate. "Charlie couldn't do much more than a few miles at a time because he gets really tired. One time he struggled to do a mile but another time, when the weather was more mild, he managed to walk up Crook Peak in the Mendips and back again."

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 908 2121 Or 07715 770448.

Just before Christmas Charlie and his family, including brother Ollie, presented a cheque to Ward 32. They were armed with selection boxes and went around chatting to the young patients. "Charlie felt that it was coming up to Christmas and he thought it would be nice to visit the children," said Karen, a parttime nursery assistant. "It's amazing what Charlie has achieved. Most of the time he just wants to play on his computer but he's actually wanted to get up and out and do this to help other people. "We've had complete strangers give us money and as a family we have been totally blown away by people's generosity. That's has been the biggest thrill for Charlie - to know that people are so kind and that there is good in the world."

A rib injury in 2011 put paid to a prospective career as a fitness model, limiting her sporting choices. "My chiropractor told me I could either swim, bike or run," said 46-year-old Emma. Most people would concentrate on just one of the three options - not Emma. "I thought I'd do a triathlon but I hadn't swam or ridden a bike for 20 years." After an intensive nine-week training jaunt, Emma entered a novice women-only competition only to discover swimming wasn't her forte. "I couldn't even swim a length but in nine weeks I managed to learn to swim the 16 lengths needed for the competition without stopping. However it was in an open water lake - completely different to a swimming pool. I dived in and started swimming but then all these women started swimming over me. I was like Orka the whale splashing around and was last out of the water. It made me determined to get them on the bike." Emma's determination saw her come ninth overall but first in her age group and, more importantly, third fastest on a bike. "That really encouraged me so I joined a cycle club. I got dropped every single weekend but I was determined not to give up." Her then coach, Chris Davis, also happened to be a track coach and suggested Emma give the track a go. After much deliberation, in March 2012 Emma, who has an 11-year-old son and a sevenyear-old daughter, visited Wales National Velodrome, Newport where she hired a track bike. "I took one look at the bank

From novice to champion track cyclist in five years and thought 'Oh my god!' "I didn't think I'd ever get up there as it looked so steep. As I went round, I was thoroughly enjoying myself - I couldn't take the smile off my face." She went back week after week and started training with Janet Birkmyre, a multi-elite and Masters Champion. "She's an amazing woman and a great mentor. With her and Chris shouting and barking at me every week to keep up and train harder, I made sure I did!" In June 2012 at the age of 42, just three months after Emma started training, she put herself up against Janet at the National Track Championships, taking silver in the Pursuit. "I just couldn't believe it. It was amazing. Chris told me I wouldn't 'podium' so I just thought, 'Oh, yes I will.' "I knew I was never going to beat Janet because she's amazing but it was great trying to chase her!" In the September further glory was to beckon when Emma entered the Welsh Open and Closed Team Sprint, gaining gold with her team mate Siobhan Mullen and silver in the Team Pursuit. The following month Emma

bagged gold in the Pursuit at the World Masters Track Championships. "Yet again I was told by my coach I would get a podium place as I was up against world class cyclists! I actually beat my Australian opponent by six seconds. I was quite chuffed with that!" More recently, in October 2016, Emma took two golds at the LVRC (League of Veterans Racing Cyclists) National Track Championships in the Sprint and 500mTime Trial, as well as a silver in the Scratch race. Emma, who trains six days a week, is keen to encourage more women to take up the sport she calls 'exhilarating'. "We need more women entering track cycling over the age of 40. "If you like cycling and want to try something different, it's something that will increase your level of fitness and the more you practise the better you'll get at it. You learn so many different tactics. It's also a way of meeting other likeminded people." It will involve travelling however, with Newport boasting the nearest velodrome to Bristol but there are numerous sessions

available from family tasters to veteran and youth drop-ins and you can hire bikes or bring your own along. "It's only a half hour journey across the bridge and it can be quite affordable," said Emma. And if you think you're too old to take up a new sport? "Age is certainly not a barrier," said Emma. "There is one lady whose husband was an ex-professional cyclist who took up cycling this year at the age of 55. She actually took gold in the Sprints. We couldn't believe it; everyone was screaming in encouragement." Emma, who is now concentrating on Sprint events, has no plans to retire any time soon, juggling her family life, her carer as a care assistant and her time on the track. Emma has her sights set on another gold in 2017's National Masters. "My husband Paul is really great so thankfully I'm able to train at Newport at weekends. My coach is fantastic and makes sure my training doesn't take up family time. "I'm going to carry on competing. I want to be the best I can possibly be."

Meet the small business spokes-men!

KINGSWOOD MP Chris Skidmore joined together with businesses to support Small Business Saturday which aims to boost high street trade. The nation-wide initiative celebrates small firms across the UK and aims to persuade shoppers to support independent retailers. Chris met with Mat from John Wood’s Cycle Repair Centre in Hanham High Street and Dr Andrew Engelivisit, from Bristolbased small business Wavehill which has been supplying social and economic research to the Government since 1992. By 2020, the Government has committed that every £1 in £3 the Government spends will be with small businesses either directly or through the supply chain. A number of local businesses signed up to the initiative including Fleurtations Florist in Hanham High Street - which previously created the traditional wreath for the Chancellor’s

Mat said: “Small Business Saturday is extremely important for businesses like us that rely on the local customers. "I am grateful for Chris taking the time come down to support our shop, and I welcome the initiative to encourage more people to shop on their local High Street.” Small Business Saturday, which is backed by the government and local authorities, was launched in the US in 2010 on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving - one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Evidence shows it has led to an increase in longer-term custom. The initiative was a huge success in the UK last year with customers spending £623m with small businesses, an increase of £119m on the previous year. The hashtag #SmallBizSatUK trended at number 1 all day on Small Business Saturday with over 100,000 tweets sent in support of the day, reaching more than 25 million people.

Looking to lose weight? Here's your inspiration IF you had told Nikki Haggett a year ago she would be running around a track she would have thought you were mad. But following a huge weight loss that's exactly what the 45-year-old has been doing. Going from size 26 to size 18, Nikki has lost a total of 5st 2lbs. After the birth of her son Matthew, Nikki managed to lose some of the weight she piled on during pregnancy but found she needed support to keep her on track. She turned to Slimming World consultant Kate Hale who runs Thursday classes at Hanham Community Centre and hasn't looked back. Although Nikki wants to lose a further two stone, she is determined to get there. "It's made a massive difference," Nikki said. "It's changed my whole life - I've got more energy and feel a lot more well in myself." Using Slimming World's 'Food Optimising' healthy eating plan, Nikki doesn't need to prepare separate meals for her family and as her weight loss increased, so has her confidence. So much so that she did something she never thought she'd do - join a running club. In just 12 weeks Nikki has gone from jogging just a few metres to being able to run 1,600m, something she is really proud of. "I never thought I'd be able to run!" said Nikki. "When I started I was a nervous wreck because I couldn't even run for a bus before I lost weight. When I first went I struggled to run 100m and would get out of breath pretty

quickly. As weeks have gone on, I've built up and up and last week I went twice around the track, which is 800m. This week I went with the aim of getting three times round but actually went four times around without stopping, which is a miracle for me!" Running has also helped Nikki's weight loss and she's noticed the pounds are coming off much faster. "Because I was a lot bigger I was embarrassed to go anywhere to do any exercise but losing the weight gave me the confidence to do it. The weight is coming off a lot easier and quicker now, which is fantastic." Although Nikki, who has been married to Bob for eight years, admits she still has a long way to go, her determination is now at an all-time high. "Running has helped my frame of mind and I feel extremely determined to get to my target weight. This is the best I've felt for a

long, long time and the lightest I can ever remember being. I'm not going to put a time limit on losing another two stone because I want to take it as it comes but if I keep the running up I think it will happen quite quickly. "For me the biggest difference has been my appearance and I now get so many comments about how different I look. I used to wear leggings and baggy jumpers but now I'm in jeans and shorter style tops. "I also feel so much healthier and fitter and don't get out of breath as quickly as I used to." Nikki's Slimming World consultant Kate Hale said: "I'm so proud of Nikki's determination and it's great to have her at my classes inspiring other slimmers. It's fantastic to see her weight loss has given her the confidence to take up a sport and as a consequence feel much more positive and healthier."

n ON THE BEAT

Look out for isolated old folk

I

With PC Lee Humpherys

HOPE you all had a great Christmas, but as we welcome in 2017, do spare a thought for elderly neighbours who may be particularly lonely as the winter stretches ahead. We know when vulnerable people feel isolated they can be more likely to fall victim to crime – doorstep crime in particular. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple ‘hello’ to an elderly neighbour, to make them feel safer and part of the community. Look out for them – perhaps offer to do their shopping if it’s icy – and please report any suspicious activity to us, in particular unfamiliar people going door-todoor. If you worry about doorstep crime, setting up a No Cold Calling Zone can help to tackle the problem. Visit South Gloucestershire Council’s website, http://www.southglos. gov.uk/documents/2013-NCCZ-

information-leaflet.pdf, or ours, for advice https://www. avonandsomerset.police.uk/ advice/crime-prevention-advice/ protecting-your-home-andproperty/know-the-signs-ofdoorstep-crime/ I’d like to update you about two of our investigations you may remember from the past couple of months. Last month we arrested a man after a significant number of cars were damaged in Hanham. He was charged with 10 counts of criminal damage and has appeared in court. At the time of writing, magistrates had released him on bail pending his next hearing, but given him an overnight curfew monitored by an electronic tag. Back in November three people were arrested after five handbag snatches in nearby Kingswood over a two-day period. As I write this, they remain on police bail while our enquiries continue.

Did you know that our Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens, puts your questions to Chief Constable Andy Marsh in live video chats every other month? The last live Facebook video chat included questions from residents about domestic abuse and driving offences. See it online at www.avonandsomerset-pcc. gov.uk. If you have a question for the next, on January 31 at 3.15pm, email pcc@avonandsomerset. police.uk or call 01275 816377. The PCC is also seeking nominations for the Be Proud Awards, recognising police officers, staff and Special Constables and volunteers. To find out more and nominate someone visit www. beproudawards.com .The closing date is January 27. Nomination forms are also available in police stations, local community buildings, libraries and by calling her office (number above).

January, 2017

n GARDENING

JANUARY the 1st, to all intents and purposes, is the beginning of my horticultural year as well as the first day of the calendar year. As I’ve mentioned before, last year there were a few false starts and a few downright failures, I won’t promise that 2017 will be any different but I’ve made a commitment to myself that I will make every effort to make it so. The bold intention, and with some careful planning may come to fruition (excuse the pun), is that we will buy as little as possible or no vegetables after the hungry gap this year. We may find ourselves living off little else but cauliflower for one month and spinach another, but this will all be part of the experiment. If I manage to buy not one vegetable in a plastic bag, because the supermarket requires it to have a barcode, then I’ll consider it a total success. I already have a good stock of broad beans growing and the first round of onions are coming along nicely, they’ll be bolstered with a second lot grown from seed which I’ll start off this month or next, under cover. Broad beans are a vegetable that I have told myself, ever since I was a child, that I dislike. The first few times that I grew

The

city gardener By Tim Barton

them I never really put in any effort and would grow just a few plants, these usually got ravaged by black fly and would be left to fester before finally being consigned to the compost heap. The main reason for growing them was that I would always have a little space at this time of the year, and they were one of the few things that I could plant. Last year however I grew a few more and we actually had a good harvest, it was then that I found out what a fool I’d been and how delicious they really are. To rectify this error of judgement, I’ve planted many more this year as they take up relatively little space for the crop that you get. If you haven’t any in the ground now, don’t worry as although they over winter well, you can plant again from February, they will catch up with the earlier grown plants but may not be as hardy to resist the inevitable aphids. The only other plants that I’ll be starting off in January are some aubergine and maybe some early cabbage and cauliflower, this year I can’t have 10 all to come in the same week. I started some aubergine last year but as with most seedlings, they were eaten by slugs and snails before they had a chance to come to anything. I’ll be using a ‘no dig’ system for the new raised beds, the idea being

that as the soil is never compacted, it will need little more than a light raking, leaving the worms and other organisms to keep it in good condition. Apart from being a much more environmentally considerate way of tending a plot, it’s less work. Already it’s apparent to me how much easier it is to maintain them, along with better drainage, these should prove to be well worth the effort. It’s not necessary to have raised beds either for maintaining your plot in this way, the simple rule is just to make sure that the soil is never compacted. Just mulch the area in a thick layer of organic matter or even layer it with cardboard and let the organisms that inhabit the top layers of the soil do their work undisturbed. Weeds are also easier to maintain this way as seeds that are lower in the soil never get brought to the surface, this means that once the top ones have germinated you only have to contend with a bit of light hoeing to keep it under control. It’s still best to remove perennial weeds when you can, but even these can get suppressed when you layer on the muck and cover with a light proof membrane. I’ve made a plan for the coming months, but if you’ve not, start looking at seeds that you want to grow this year. If you do that when

the weather in inclement then you can spend the more pleasant days doing some of these jobs. • Clean protective environments like greenhouses ready for spring • Inspect tubers from dahlias and cannas that are stored, for rot or drying out • Prune apple or pear trees • Start forcing rhubarb • Cut back any perennials that were left for winter interest • As it’s mild here, if the weather isn’t too cold you can start to divide larger clumps of herbaceous perennials for more plants this year • Repair lawn edges that are looking a little tired and aerate if there are signs of waterlogging If the soil is not frozen then it’s a good time to plant bare root shrubs and trees, also to move established deciduous ones as they are dormant now

What is Kennel Cough? KENNEL Cough (also known as infectious canine tracheobronchitis or bordetellosis) is a nasty and highly contagious disease that causes inflammation of the trachea and bronchus in dogs. It is a widespread disease which is caused by several different viruses and bacteria. Kennel Cough is not a disease that is ONLY caught in kennels. It can be caught through direct contact with affected dogs or by sharing contaminated objects such as toys or food/drink bowls etc. Due to its contagious nature, it can spread very quickly amongst dogs who are kept within close proximity to each other e.g. in kennels. Many boarding kennels will not accept dogs who aren’t vaccinated against Kennel Cough. Symptoms of Kennel Cough can include: a dry hacking cough sounding like a goose honk, and often sounds as though there is something stuck in the dogs throat, retching and watery nasal discharge. All dogs can develop Kennel Cough, however, certain dogs will be more at risk such as young puppies, older dogs, pregnant bitches, dogs with low immunity or existing respiratory disease. If you suspect that your pet may be suffering from Kennel Cough, book an appointment to see a vet as there are many possible causes for coughing and treatment can vary. Your dog will also need to be isolated from other dogs so not to spread the disease. If Kennel Cough is left untreated, it could develop

in to pneumonia, which will require hospitalisation and further treatment. Kennel cough can be prevented by a vaccination which is given via the nose. Although it does not guarantee that your dog will not contract Kennel Cough, it may reduce the risk of contracting the infection and also reduce the severity of the disease if the dog does become infected. Call Longwell Green Veterinary Centre on 0117 9323660 for more information or to book an appointment.

n PANTOMIME SEASON

Panto promises laughs ... oh yes it does KINGSWOOD Players will perform Dick Whittington on January 20, 21, 27 and 28. With colourful characters such as Fairy Bowbells, King Rat, Dame Sarah Sauceboat and Captain Cuttlefish, the production promises a great escape from the January blues. Claire Immel Willock, who plays Jack Idle, said: "This is a traditional pantomime, bubbling over with comedy, adventure, romance and audience participation. We hope people will support their local theatre - our ticket prices are much more affordable than for a professional theatre and yet we pride ourselves on the high standard of our productions." Dick Whittington, written and directed by Richard Bond, will be held at Kingswood Community Centre, BS15 4AB, at 7.30pm each evening, plus Saturday matinees at 2.30pm. For tickets call the box office on 0777 205 6562 or e-mail boxoffice@ kingswoodplayers.org. Visit www.kingswoodplayers.org for more details. You can also follow the Kingswood Players on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube.

Dastardly Bluebeard ahoy! A DRAMA group founded more than 45 years ago is preparing for its latest pantomime this month. St Stephen’s Drama Group is presenting Bluebeard The Pantomime from January 2628. Their version of the tale of the dastardly pirate is by Paul Reakes. Producer Kate Kendell said: “I chose this particular pantomime as it’s really funny. When we were in the process of choosing what we wanted to do, the whole group were falling about laughing whilst reading this one and we feel that if it made us laugh like that then our audience will love it.” One of the actors, Alice Hall, added: “It’s a very physical, slapstick version and we’ve been enjoying rehearsals loads, even if they are absolutely exhausting.” The drama group was founded in 1971 by four church members. It stages two productions a year. The choices

of plays have varied over the years, from musicals to serious dramas. It broadens our acting abilities and keeps things interesting. Members love taking part in local community events and recently featured in the popular Christmas on the Hill parade dressed in full panto regalia. They also perform carols and sing-a-longs at local venues. The group is family orientated, with generations of the same family coming along to rehearsals and getting involved in dance, set design, costumes and technical matters. Some young members have gone on to careers in the performing arts industry. The club also holds social occasions, trips to the theatre and visits to other amateur groups’ productions. The evening performances begin at 7.30pm and there’s a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets are available on 07944 158294 or via the club’s website.

n INSIDE OUT

Make a virtue of clutter IF you have any Christmas book vouchers burning a hole in your pocket you could do a lot worse than to treat yourself to a copy of Life Unstyled, written by interiors stylist Emily Henson. Focussing on real life homes with piles of books at the bedside, it is the perfectly imperfect antidote to the aspirational, sterile showhome gloss found in so many magazines and social media feeds. Of course, all the photographs are of exceptionally beautiful properties, many converted commercial spaces of desirable proportions, and mostly inhabited by creative individuals with superior taste and an enviable knack for artfully displaying their interesting collections, and invigorating old cabinets and crates with quick and thrifty paint jobs. But don't let that

put you off. The book serves to inspire in the reader to fall back in love with their home, despite any unfinished decorating jobs, exposed plaster and distressed paintwork with its images of charmingly casual interiors. Placing emphasis on making the most of what you already have, Henson shows how to make a virtue of clutter, by making it characterful. It is true after all that real life involves a certain amount of messiness, whether stuck to the fridge, dangling from sockets or piling up by the front door. These refreshingly attainable interior shots are a great resource for the many homeowners that seek to put their house in order near the start of the new year; a reminder to create a home that you love, rather than what you think you should love.
