Blow to High Street as NatWest announces branch will close THE Hanham branch of NatWest is set to close in the summer. The bank has written to its customers advising them the High Street branch will shut on June 28. NatWest says more people do their banking online or by phone, leading to a 40 per cent drop in customers using branches. The bank said closing branches was a decision taken "very seriously" after considering factors including how often customers use the branch and the impact closure would have. NatWest has reported 1.1 billion mobile and online transactions in first half of 2017 - an increase of 41 per cent. Since 2014 the number of customers using the NatWest app has risen by 43 per cent with mobile transactions up by 73 per cent. The nearest NatWest branch is in Regent Street, Kingswood, which is 1.4 miles away, followed by Fishponds, 2.9 miles away, and Broadmead, 3.6 miles away. NatWest customers can get a balance, make cash withdrawals and pay in cash and cheques at Post Office branches including ones in Hanham, Longwell Green and the Kingsway.

Apprentices honoured THREE apprentices are celebrating after winning recognition for their work. The lads are all employed by Gregor Heating, a heating and electrical business based in Warmley. They were presented with awards at the firm’s annual apprentice awards ceremony by Longwell Green councillor Toby Savage and apprenticeship provider Anne Day from OnSite Bristol. Joe Yabsley, a Year 2 Apprentice, won the overall Apprentice of the Year award after being nominated by his peers for his commitment and positive attitude, which he puts down to "love of his job". He received a £250 tool allowance contribution. Two other apprentices, George Watts and Declan Jeffaries, were also recognised for completion of their apprenticeships this year. Gregor Heating, which employs more than 120 people, has taken on many apprentices in its 30 years of trading. Managing director, Steve Gregor, began his journey as a plumbing and heating apprentice. He said: "I know the value of being given such an opportunity and apprentices are very much a part of our company’s success story. Every year I am more and more impressed with the candidates that come through the door and these awards are very much designed to reflect that. Well done everyone." Longwell Green councillor Toby Savage, who is Cabinet Member for Schools, Skills and Employment on South Gloucestershire Council, said: "Congratulations to all of the apprentices at Gregor Heating, especially the winner of Apprentice of the Year, Joe. Toni can't be down in the mouth with friends like these! MEMBERS of a Hanham-based hockey club came to the rescue of a team mate after she needed costly dental work following an accident during a game. Disaster struck in September when first team player Toni Clochier was hit in the mouth by a hockey ball during the first game of the season. Even though Toni was wearing a dentist-made gum shield she required an emergency trip to the dental hospital. Toni needed major work and faced a hefty bill. Ever the trooper,Toni returned to hockey the very next week, determined not to let her team down. Inspired by Toni's dedication to the Jaspers Ladies Hockey Club, team mate Bridget Price came up with an idea. She asked her family members and their friends to knit Jaspers LHCinspired pink and black woolly hats so they could be sold to raise money towards Toni’s
dental work. Everyone knew the reason behind the hats, apart from Toni, who was told they were being knitted in aid of general fundraising for the club. Members and supporters quickly got behind the idea, all buying hats not only for themselves but for family members too. Soon there was a sea of pink and black bobble hats on the sideline cheering on the club's teams when they played. At the final training session before the Christmas break, the true reason for the hats was revealed to Toni, who voiced her appreciation on social media. "I’m completely overwhelmed and feeling entirely grateful to have such amazing people in my life," she said. Jaspers LHC would like to thank everyone for supporting Bridget in raising funds for Toni. 4 Jayne Taylor meets a team who have revived a local boxing club ONE of Bristol's oldest boxing clubs has finally found a new home after eight years of uncertainty. Kingswood Boxing Club was set up in the 1970s by local legend Ray Jones and enjoyed success in the following two decades. Hundreds of youngsters passed through its doors in the old YMCA building in The Park, most notably a young lad by the name of Ross Hale who went on to win the British and Commonwealth light-welter weight titles. When the building was sold for flats in 1986 the club moved to the Kingswood Foundation and continued its successful run. But when it was forced to move once again in 2009, this time to make way for a cafe, the club experienced eight years of being moved from pillar to post and, as a consequence, dwindling numbers. Now two men, buoyed by

Fishponds, and Shaun Luther, 50, of Longwell Green, both boxed for Kingswood Boxing Club as youngsters and are determined to see the club enjoy
the same success it received in its glory years. The men have been renovating an empty unit at Avon Business Park in Lodge Causeway since the summer and it's now fully equipped, offering training sessions every Monday and Wednesday from 6pm. Craig said the club has had a turbulent time in recent years but thanks to the generosity of his father-in-law Pete Griffiths who offered him the unit, he hopes to put that behind them. "We were in the Kingswood Foundation for years but were moved out because they made the room we were using into a coffee shop," said Craig. "From that point we were just being kicked out of everywhere; nothing worked out. "My father-in-law has a few units in Fishponds and one of them was in a right mess. He said we were more than welcome to use it but we'd have to clear it out and repair it. "We started doing it up back

club packs a punch ... in the summer and spent a lot of time and effort getting the unit back up to scratch and turning it into a boxing gym. Had it not been for my father-in-law, we'd probably still not have had anywhere to train. Now we've got a place we can call home. It's such a relief to know we now have a fully-functioning boxing gym we can use when we want and can do what we like to it. It's brilliant." The pair have been running training session for the past few months and interest is growing as the word spreads that Kingswood Boxing Club is back in business. One of the highlights for Craig, Shaun and the youngsters are the visits from Ray Jones, of Kingswood, who started the club in 1975 when he came to the end of his professional boxing career. At the age of 76, Ray is still an important part of the club and pops in to say hello and to make sure Craig and Shaun are delivering to his exacting
standards. "He comes in and shouts from the ringside to let us know what we're doing wrong," Craig jokes. "Ray's boxing knowledge is unbelievable; he absolutely loves the sport." Craig, who works as a floor layer at his father-in-law's Fishponds-based business, D & G Flooring, became involved with the club at the age of 17, getting through to the finals of the Novice Championships held at Crystal Palace. "When I was boxing, we used to travel all over the country to box and everyone knew about Kingswood Boxing Club. Because we've been out of the loop for so long we're far less known now but we plan to change that now we've got a permanent home." Craig and Shaun hope to engage as many boys and girls from age 13 as space allows. Training sessions feature warm-up exercises like skipping, squat thrusts, stretches and sprints before moving on to

shadow boxing, bag work and one-on-one pad work. There's also sparring sessions in the ring for those who are ready. "Boxing is such a tough sport and you have to be disciplined but you can have such a great time," said Craig. "We've had a lot of kids in the past who have joined the club because they have no selfconfidence and boxing can really help with that. "Young people often open up to us if they are experiencing problems. Sometimes they feel they can't talk to their mum or dad but, in a gym environment, they give us that bit of respect and open up." Craig, who has three children and a step-daughter, said he is happy to give up his spare time to make Kingswood Boxing Club successful again. "All the work Shaun and I do is voluntary. We don't get any help from anyone and the only way we function is through subs. If a bag breaks, it comes out of
the sub money the kids pay. "We're doing it because we love boxing. It's just a great sport to get into. We're inspired by Ray who set it up. Boxing has been Ray's life so we really want to keep it going for him." Craig and Shaun are now looking for a club secretary to attend meetings with the ABA (Amateur Boxing Association) with a view to getting back to competition level. Craig said: "So much has changed since we were fighting so we're a bit out of the loop. Our ultimate goal though is to get people back into competitions and get the club going again as a proper boxing club." Children bring alive the spirit of Christmas
CHILDREN at The Meadows Primary School in Bitton performed their Christmas production to an audience of parents, grandparents and friends. The Little Fir Tree told the story of a small tree that was overlooked but eventually chosen to be decorated and bring joy at a children’s hospital at Christmas. The show, which featured the talents of pupils from reception, Year 1 and Year 2, ended with a nativity scene. Parents supported the school by making costumes and staff worked hard to help the children prepare for the performances. Headteacher Joy Mounter said: "I was so proud of everyone involved in the production. The children were fantastic and their singing was beautiful. It was a lovely way to mark the start of Christmas."

Sports award for Barrs Court Schools given an upgrade BARRS Court Primary School has become one of the first schools in England to win a new national school sport accolade. The award recognises the school's commitment to develop its students to be the best they can be in competitive school sport. The school, in Stephens Drive, was one of only 104 schools in the whole country to receive the special School Games Platinum Award. The award is part of the School Games Mark, a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 and administered by national charity the Youth Sport Trust, which had close to 9,000 applicants this year. Its aim is to reward schools for a commitment to the development of competition across schools and into the community. Participating in this process allows schools to evaluate their PE provision, grading them
either bronze, silver or gold, and assists schools in developing an action plan for future progress. The Platinum Award is the new fourth level of the award scheme, introduced earlier this year to celebrate schools who had shown consistently high levels of enthusiasm and commitment to school sport. Applications are only open to those schools who achieved five successive gold awards. To achieve the gold award a school must meet a certain set of criteria, which includes engaging a high percentage of young people in both curricular and extracurricular activities, participating in a minimum number of competitions across different sports, and reaching out to target groups including young leaders, volunteers, and those previously identified as the school’s least-active pupils. Ryan Walker, PE subject leader at Barrs Court, said: "PE and sport at Barrs Court has gone
from strength to strength over the last few years. The children are dedicated to physical activity and are always looking for the next challenge. The Platinum Award is a fitting tribute to all of their commitment and drive." Ali Oliver, chief executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said: "At a time when young people are becoming less healthy and less active, the School Games provides opportunities for millions across the country to participate in sport and reap the benefits of an active lifestyle both on and off the field. Schools like Barrs Court are really leading the way." All Platinum Awards will be valid for two years and successful applicants will not be required to apply again in 2018. The school will have the opportunity to maintain their Platinum Award when next applying in summer 2019.
SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has invested £2 million in upgrades at 18 schools.A number of projects have been completed over the year, from adding and adapting classrooms to upgrading heating systems to cope with the colder winter months. Among the schools to benefit is Cherry Garden Primary in Bitton, which has a new boiler. Councillor Toby Savage, cabinet member responsible for schools, said: “Replacing old boilers and roofing is helping to reduce schools’ running costs and forms part of our ongoing programme of investment to create safe, high quality learning environments for all our children. The extra classrooms are also easing the pressure on our over-subscribed schools.”

REVELLERS on nights out in Kingswood and Chipping Sodbury over the festive season are being offered help to stay safe. South Gloucestershire Council teamed up with partners including police to run a night safe campaign during December. The aim is to reduce incidents of alcohol-related disorder and to ensure everyone enjoys the festive season. The council has joined forces with Avon and Somerset Police, Safe and Sound taxi marshal service providers, Pastor volunteer support services and Chipping Sodbury and Kingswood Pubwatch schemes for the campaign, which aims to: • Prevent the escalation of low level incidents
• Prevent increased demand on police resources, ambulance service and hospital admissions • Prevent increased incidents of alcohol, drug related violence, anti-social behaviour, and criminal damage • Reduce the fear of crime. Cabinet member for communities Councillor Heather Goddard said: "In town centres where there are several bars and restaurants located close together, a heavy drinking culture can develop which in turn can lead to negative consequences related to crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour. "We are working with partners to promote safety and wellbeing, and to make sure all of our residents are able to enjoy a
safe night over the festive period. "Similar campaigns have been run in previous years which have been well received by people enjoying a night out and those living near the bars and restaurants." Throughout the campaign, the council will be working with partners to increase the operation hours for existing taxi and street marshals, employing an additional marshal at each location, distributing bottled water and promotional material with key messages to stay safe, and talking to licensed venues to provide support and awareness of hate crime. The scheme launched in Chipping Sodbury on December 2. Further dates include Friday December 22, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Armed robbery at supermarket: two men face charges TWO men have been charged with armed robbery at a supermarket in Warmley. Michael Shuker, aged 34, and Jason Lamb, aged 39, both from the local area, have been charged with robbery and possession of an imitation firearm. They were due to appear at Bristol Magistrates Court as Hanham and Longwell Green Voice went to print. The robbery took place at the Co-op in School Road just after 7.20am on Saturday December 16. Two suspects were arrested within 90 minutes of police being alerted to the incident. Officers are keen to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious in School Road or in the nearby area on Saturday morning, or to anyone who has found clothing or other items nearby that could be connected to the robbery. Some items police believe are of significance were found in bins around the Cadbury Heath area. Youths accused over burglaries TWO men have been charged after three burglaries in Longwell Green and Speedwell. Michael Junior Lawrence, 18, of Sunny Bank, Speedwell, is charged with: Burglary at a house in Speedwell overnight Monday 11 to Tuesday 12 December, in which a white Mercedes car was stolen with the keys Burglary at a house in Palmdale Close, Longwell Green on Wednesday 13 December, in which two laptops, a mobile phone, rucksack and purse were stolen Burglary at a house in Stanhope Road, Longwell Green, on Wednesday 13 December, in which items including jackets, handbags, wallets, keys, an iPad and cash were stolen He is also facing charges of aggravated vehicle taking,
dangerous driving and driving with no insurance. Daniel King, 20, of Hillside Road, St George, is jointly charged with the same three burglaries and is also charged with aggravated vehicle taking. The stolen Mercedes car has been recovered after being found crashed and abandoned by patrolling officers at about 4am on Wednesday December 13 in Acacia Avenue, Staple Hill. Neighbourhood Sergeant Darren Warr said: "I’d urge people to make sure their home is secure at night and when they go out. Some types of doors may seem locked when you lift the handle, but can still be opened by a burglar if you haven’t turned the key. " It’s important to take the keys out of the lock, and keep them safely out of sight."

'We're all set for the smaller black bins' RESIDENTS in South Gloucestershire have recycled an extra 1,279 tonnes of waste since weekly collections were brought in, paving the way for the introduction of smaller black bins in the New Year. New figures released by South Gloucestershire Council show the success of the authority's new weekly kerbside recycling collections, which began in June this year. The additional 1,279 tonnes of recycling is a 14 per cent increase and includes an extra 600 tonnes of paper and cardboard, an extra 364 tonnes of food waste and an extra 315 tonnes made up of plastics, cans and textiles. Waste that cannot be recycled is disposed of either as energy from waste or into landfill and the council has to pay at least £101 to dispose of every tonne of black bin waste in this way, so the extra 1,270 tonnes of

recycling has allowed the council to save around £130,000 since weekly collections began. An initiative to replace the current black bins for smaller bins will be rolled out from January 15. Cabinet councillor Heather Goddard said: "Before we launched our new strategy, 52 per cent of waste put into our black bins could have been recycled from home. This first response to making recycling easier is very encouraging. "The next step is to reduce the size of people’s waste bins, which will start to happen in the New Year. From January 15 we will be exchanging the 240 litre black bins for non-recyclable waste with 140 litre bins, to reduce recyclable waste ending up in the black bins and achieve our recycling target of 50 per cent by 2020. It is clear now that the pressure on those bins will be far less, thanks to residents’
recycling efforts. "There have been a number of other initiatives as part of the new approach, including making allowances for larger families to have extra black bin capacity and introducing separate bags for disposable nappy waste to help families with young children manage their non-recyclable waste. Residents have had Christmas collection calendars delivered
but can check the dates for their area on the council website at: www.southglos.gov.uk/ collectionday Waste and recycling collections will not take place on Monday 25, Tuesday 26 December or Monday 1 January. Parkwall pupils in star roles CHILDREN from Hanham and Cadbury Heath were among those taking part in South Gloucestershire Council's annual carol service. The event, held at Clifton Cathedral and attended by council chairman Cllr Ian Blair and other councillors, attracted hundreds of schoolchildren and teachers and included a recreation of the nativity. The main characters of the nativity were played by pupils from Parkwall Primary School and featured Mary and Joseph leading a donkey around the cathedral to help bring the Christmas story to life as well as a four-month-old baby playing the role of Jesus. Extra performances from St Mary’s Primary in Yate and Marshfield Primary School in Marshfield were supplemented by readings from pupils at Blackhorse Primary, Hanham Abbots Junior and the Manor primary schools. Children showcased traditional carols and modern songs. Cllr Blair said: "The annual carol service is a highlight of the year for me as it brings together so many children from South Gloucestershire’s primary schools. It is a special event for everyone involved and it’s wonderful to see the children bring the nativity scene to life with such enthusiasm."
Spectacular success at Kingswoo THE MUSICAL talents of children from schools in the area were showcased at a spectacular Christmas concert at the Colston Hall. The annual concert was hosted by King’s Oak Academy and included six of the academy’s partner primary schools - Beacon Rise, Courtney, Cadbury Heath, The Park, Park Wall and the Tynings. More than 450 youngsters from Years 3 to
13 took to the stage performing a range of songs including Thank you for the Music, You Raise Me Up, Shine, Heal the World and the Camel Boogie Woogie. There was also a medley of Christmas songs to get the audience in a festive mood. Other acts included steel bands, drum groups, rock bands, and soloists.

The annual Colston Hall concert was produced and directed by Tim Warren, King's Oak's team leader of performance and participation. He said: "This concert is part of the continuing work between our academy and our partner primaries which covers many areas of the
curriculum. The students, pupils and staff really enjoyed the event and worked really well together. "They put on a fantastic performance which was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience." A collection was taken in aid of Kingswoodbased charity Jessie May, the chosen charity of the academy's music department.
PEOPLE in the Hanham area can look forward to another Wallace & Gromit arts trail taking place across Bristol this summer. More than 60 decorated sculptures of the popular pair and the pesky penguin Feathers McGraw - will go on show in the city from July 2 to September 2. Locations for the Gromit Unleashed 2 trail are still being decided. If you would like to suggest a site within an approximate 10-mile radius of the city centre, contact the organisers by January 4. As with the previous Gromit trail in 2013 and the Shaun the Sheep trail in 2015, schools can also get involved with the project, which is run by Bristol Children’s Hospital charity The Grand Appeal with animation studio Aardman.They can apply to decorate a smaller sculpture of Feathers McGraw. Nicola Masters, director of the Grand Appeal said: "We've been blown away by public support from across the country and around the world.Gromit is so well loved and has universal appeal, and since 2013, he has gone on to help us raise over £6 million for Bristol Children's Hospital. Wallace and Gromit have played a huge part in our 22-year history as a charity." The trail will also support the Special Care Baby Unit at St Michael’s Hospital.

AS I write this two men are due to appear in court over two burglaries in Longwell Green. In each case the householder only realised when a neighbour called to say their handbag had been found in the street. Please make sure you lock up and set your alarm at night. Some doors may seem locked when you lift the handle, but can still be opened by a burglar if you haven’t turned the key. It’s important to take the keys out of the lock and put them safely out of sight. At Hanham Woods Academy we also discussed online and social media safety. When talking to primary school children I also reminded them that police officers and PCSOs are here to keep people safe, and talked
about road safety and what to do if they were approached by a stranger. Splash of soul returns for 2018 NORTHERN soul lovers have a treat in store with the return of Splash of Soul on Sunday January 7. I’D like to use this month’s column to congratulate all those who were involved in making the Hanham Christmas fair such a great success this year. It was fantastic to see the fair return to the high street following the cancellation of the event last year and the organisers have estimated that up to 4,000 people attended on the day. I was delighted to be able to host Santa’s grotto in my office on the high street and I am well informed that Santa believed it to be the best grotto location and turnout he has seen in years! My special thanks goes to all of the Hanham traders for their hard work and to all of the volunteers who made the day possible. With 2018 now underway, there are many projects and campaigns in the pipeline for the year ahead. Later this month I will be meeting with directors from the Homes and Communities Agency who will be regenerating the former Kleeneze site. I intend to press the case to ensure that adequate parking provision is included for any plans on the site as I believe that this is essential
for the vitality of the high street and for local shoppers and residents. Further to my 1,200 signature petition to South Gloucestershire Council regarding the preservation of Hanham Cricket Ground, I will continue working with the Hanham District Greenbelt Conservation Society as well as other stakeholders in order to ensure that we do everything we can in order to stop any attempt for the cricket ground at Abbotts road to be built on. Historically it was purchased for the people of Hanham and should remain a green space. As you may know, I recently met with the Housing and Planning Minister in order to press the case for sites such as this to be preserved and safeguarded from development when there is such strong public support for them to remain as they are. In addition, as the Minister responsible for democratic engagement and elections, I also have a busy year ahead. Last year, I made it a priority of mine to ensure that any existing barriers to democratic participation for
January, 2018 vulnerable groups were looked at again, making voting easier for those with sight impairment or blindness as well as survivors of domestic abuse, as well as publishing the Government’s first Democratic Engagement Plan in December. This year, I will be piloting the use of ID at polling stations in certain local authorities so that we can ensure that each individual vote is safeguarded. Furthermore, 2018 will mark the first National Democracy week, a UK-wide event that I have instigated as a Minister to help raise the profile of how important our democracy and taking part in elections is. Comfort boxes for The Crucifix relatives at hospitals Killer RELATIVES and carers of patients nearing the end of their lives in Bristol’s city centre hospitals will be offered help to make their stay more comfortable. They will receive Comfort Boxes, funded by hospital charity Above & Beyond. These contain items such as toothpaste and toothbrush, wet wipes and hand cream; a sleeping mask and ear plugs; and tea, coffee and biscuits. Also included is a leaflet which provides useful information about visiting hours, arranging an overnight stay and where to buy food and drink on hospital sites. Sue Coghlan, Sister on Ward 78 at St Michael’s Hospital, said: “During difficult times, it really is the little things that can make all the difference to a relative’s or carer’s stay on the ward. n NEWS A BRISTOL Rovers fan says he is honoured to win this year's Gashead Hero award for his charity work. Downend's Mark Brimson has raised more than £20,000 for Bristol-based charity Headway following the death of his soul mate Gloria in 2007. Gloria, 33, was diagnosed with an AVM - Arteriovenous Malformation, a cluster of abnormal blood vessels in the brain. She had a 15-hour operation to remove the AVM but died on June 7, 2007 from complications. Mark's relentless charity work has now been recognised by his favourite football club when he was given the Gashead Hero award 2017 at the club's home game against Southend United on December 9. The award tasted all the sweeter when the Gas beat their opponents 3-0. Mark received the award from former Rovers players Steve White, Nick Tanner, Vaughan Jones and Gary Penrice, whom he describes as his boyhood heroes. Mark described the experience of receiving the

NO doubt that these are some of the common questions that many are asking with the recent cases of Meningitis B among young people in Bristol. Meningococcal group B bacteria is a serious cause of life-threatening infections, including meningitis and blood poisoning worldwide. There are 12 known groups of meningococcal bacteria, and group B (MenB) is responsible for about 90% of meningococcal infections in the UK. This bacteria can spread to people through prolonged close contact. Meningococcal infections tend to come in bursts. In the past 20 years, between 500 and 1,700 people every year have suffered from MenB disease, with around 1 in 10 dying from the infection. Many of those who survive suffer terrible permanent disability, such as amputation, brain damage and epilepsy. Meningitis can affect all ages but it’s more common in babies and young children. The next most vulnerable groups is teenagers and young adults due to increased
social mixing at these ages (starting sixth form and university). All teenagers are now vaccinated against the Meningitis ACWY strain (a different strain from B) at secondary school but not Meningitis B. Unfortunately, the insidious nature of this causative bacteria means the NHS cannot offer the vaccines to everyone at the present moment. However, due to recent cases and fatality of Men B among young people (including in Bristol), there has been a massive campaign to raise funds and awareness of this condition. As your local pharmacy, the pharmacist has undertaken the necessary training and is able to provide the Men B vaccination privately from December onwards. Even a quick walk around the block is better than nothing. If you can, take long leisurely walks at the weekend and play with your cat or rabbit to help keep their minds and their bodies active.

• Weigh out your pet’s food – try not to guestimate how much food to give your pet, weigh it instead so you can monitor how much food they’re eating. • Use a weight loss food – there are many pet food diets that are proven to help your pet lose weight without them going hungry. Speak to vet or nurse to find out which foods are most suitable for your pet. • Avoid ‘tit-bits’ – human food is not for pets. Did you know that one biscuit for a medium size dog is the equivalent to us eating a chocolate bar! Keep food out of reach so they can’t be tempted to eat it when you’re not looking. Many high fat foods, like butter
and cheese, can lead to painful pancreatitis, and some human foods cannot be digested by animals. • Pet treats – there are plenty of treats available that are good for pets – low fat, low sugar and good for the teeth. Welcome 2018 FIRSTLY, we would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year! And we as plot-holders look forward to the weeks ahead with optimism. Although the weather in January is generally against us and daylight is still in short supply there will be signs that it is steadily increasing. For those that have already bought seeds and are eager to plant them, the general advice is hold on yet even if you have a greenhouse. Sweet peas that were planted under glass in late autumn will be developing their root system during winter months even if there is only slight growth above the surface, but these will have an advantage over those planted in the spring and reward you with longer stems that will flower longer. From 14 February is an ideal time to break open selected packets of seeds such as onions and early brassicas as daylight will start to increase, but they may still need inside warmth to help them germinate. Try planting the onion seed in six cell trays, three to five seeds per cell. When a couple of inches tall, gently lift them from their cell, do not separate but plant them as a clump and allow them to reach maturity. This method will result in slightly smaller onions but considerably saves space. Two weeks later, if under cover, Boltardy Beetroot could also be sown. Try these as with onions just described but three seeds per cell. During March as light and temperatures improve these will show steady growth. When large enough to handle gently lift them from their cell as a cluster
and transplant them to their final growing bed. When large enough to harvest, simply twist away the biggest from each cluster so the others can grow further until you need them. But before we get carried away with planting, back to the present. Early December saw snowfall albeit that Bristol mainly got off with a dusting. Even this however can be troublesome if you have cages over brassicas or fruit. Our picture, although not taken recently shows the damage snow can cause to netting suspended over a framework. One suggestion, if possible to avoid the near collapse of the cage, is to remove the roof netting and replace it with pea netting. This will stop birds, particularly pigeons that will do most damage, from entering the cage but at the same time allow snow to pass through it. Unfortunately, for those that have draped net over cabbages or similar, replacing this with pea net will be of little use as the offending birds will still have access to your crop. The net that has served its purpose for now in protecting the crop is actually best left in place. Snow will collect on the net and its weight will inevitably flatten the plants underneath particularly if they are tall such as sprouts or broccoli. Your instincts may be to remove the snow and net, but actually the snow will form a blanket protection, so leave it. When the snow melts, the plants will regain their former stature without too much trouble. We appreciate that some regular readers of our column may not have an allotment and as the

So here’s a resolution you may like to consider, /‘I want to grow my own fresh vegetables’. /It sounds a bit daunting perhaps, particularly if you’ve never grown anything before. We’ll be pleased to answer all your questions, and after your visit you may just be convinced this is one resolution that will grow on you!
