THE magic of Disney was in the air when scores of families headed for Hanham to take part in the annual scarecrow hunt. The event saw the High Street full of mums, dads and children busy with pens and paper trying the guess the Disney characters displayed in shop windows. Organisede by Friends of Christchurch School, it raised about £1,000, which will be spent on improving the school's play area. Families purchased entry forms from members of the Friends who were based at Hanham Community Centre and then had to walk up and down the High Street to find the different characters and guess who they were. Various prizes were given out

Friends co-chair Lucy Champion came up with the idea of bring a hunt to Hanham

after visiting scarecrow trails in Pucklechurch and Lacock. She said: "We raised about £1,000, which is amazing! Last year we collected £900 which shows the event has grown again this year. We had fantastic feedback, which is really nice.

The Friends would like to say a huge thank you to all the businesses that took part and to the community centre because without them we couldn't do it, and, of course, to all the people who made the scarecrows."

n NEWS HUNDREDS of South Gloucestershire parents, including many from the Hanham area, have been taking action in protest against cuts to education funding. The Fair Funding For All Schools campaign began in the spring as it became clear that a proposed new national funding formula, designed to reduce inequality in the way education budgets were allocated, was not going to benefit 98 per cent of schools, including those most in need. As reported in last month’s Voice, more than 300 people attended the first South Glos meeting in Hambrook on April 6, the day after campaigners had urged councillors to back their concerns. Theresa May’s decision to call a snap general election brought the matter into sharper focus, with supporters being encouraged to question candidates about their views on school funding. South Gloucestershire receives some of the lowest per-pupil funding in the country

5

Parents rise up to battle school funding cuts so head teachers, school staff, parents and students are angry that they will face more realterms cuts in the coming years. Some schools in Bristol, South Glos and around the country are warning parents that the pressure on their budgets including increased pension and National Insurance contributions and rising bills - will mean some tough decisions. Governors at Summerhill Infant School have written to parents to explain they will have to reduce the number of learning support assistants from September because of the budget reduction. Staple Hill Primary governors have written to families saying the school faces a £100,000 cut in the 2018-19 financial year - equivalent to a monthly contribution of £33 per child. “The school needs to take

drastic action,” they say. “We will be looking at options such as: * reducing staffing levels * changes to school hours * increasing class sizes * reducing provision such as breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and school trips." Eric Mutch, a parent governor at the school, told Voice: "These cuts will affect every parent, regardless of their political persuasion." Some secondary schools are facing reductions of hundreds of thousands of pounds, which will inevitably mean jobs being axed and curriculum options restricted. A website, schoolcuts.org, gives details of the scale of the problem facing education leaders. Parents in Hanham have been strongly involved in the

campaign for more money for schools, delivering hundreds of leaflets to homes in the area and attending the big Fair Funding for All Schools march in Bristol on May 20, which saw an estimated turnout of 6,000 parents, grandparents, children and teachers. The lobbying is expected to continue after the election on June 8, with events planned this month and next. Councillors of all parties on South Gloucestershire Council, at its annual meeting on May 17, welcomed the actions of the Fair Funding for all Schools campaigners. They unanimously passed a motion praising and endorsing the group's aims and vowing to write to the Government immediately after the election calling for increased funding for all schools.

Junior football club aims for victory over arsonists LEADERS of a junior football club have vowed to make sure the club rises from the ashes following a devastating fire at their headquarters. Arsonists are thought to have started the blaze at the clubhouse on the club’s ground in Blackhorse Lane, Emersons Green, which destroyed the boiler room and damaged electrics, water supply and pipework in the building. Emersons Green Junior Football Club chairman Paul Thomas said it appeared the culprits had planned the attack, disabling the CCTV cameras outside the building and breaking a window. Mr Thomas said: “The boiler room inside the Emersons Green JFC club house was broken into and set on fire. This building is attached to the side of the club

house, but luckily the fire was put out by the fire brigade before it could spread further. “In the last few months, there have been constant problems around the playing fields, with fires being set on the pitches and vandalism and graffiti around the grounds. Our large sign at the entrance of the ground welcoming people to the club was also smashed down.” Police have told Mr Thomas they do not have enough evidence to press charges over the fire but have asked people to report any suspicious or antisocial behaviour by calling 101. Parents and coaches rallied round to clean up after the fire on April 30 and local businesses helped with repairing the lights and restoring the CCTV. Major repairs are needed, which will mainly be funded

by insurance, but the latest incident has encouraged the club to consider a more extensive refurbishment of the old clubhouse, which was inherited from Cadbury Heath FC. Mr Thomas said: “The club is looking at raising money to firstly update and decorate the existing facilities, that haven't been changed for a long time, and possibly extend the clubhouse. This would create a hall space so we can do more for the community by creating a possible youth club, where we can help get children off the streets into a safe environment.” James Cullen, a parent and coach, has set up a crowdfunding page with the aim of raising £10,000. Meanwhile, the leaders are determined that the 200 or so children aged four to 15 who belong to the club will not

Red-letter day as Phyllis, 95, gets

Phyllis on fire duty in London with Red Watch during the Second World War

DESPITE serving as a civilian telephone operator and firewatcher during the Second World War, Phyllis Green thought she would never be awarded the Civil Defence Medal she so richly deserved. Her service records were lost when the fire station she served at was bombed and this meant Phyllis was unable to claim her medal following the war. But thanks to some painstaking detective work by her family, Phyllis was finally presented with her medal during celebrations to mark her 95th birthday. It came as a complete surprise to Phyllis, with her family saying she was "overwhelmed" with emotion. Phyllis, who lives in Woodlands Court, Downend, was born and bred in South London and had qualified for the award by serving as a civilian telephone operator and fire-watcher with

the Auxiliary Fire Service in Battersea from 1941 to 1944, including during the London Blitz. Her son Chris Green said it was a case of providing evidence to prove Phyllis had indeed served, which was tricky as her records were lost. Chris, who looks after Bromley Heath Scout and Guide HQ, said: "I had to do a bit of detective work! First of all I went to the War Office but they only deal with war medals so they pointed me to the Cabinet Office. I went to them and discovered my brother Cliff had already tried to claim her medal some years ago but was unable to provide sufficient information so he didn't get anywhere. "I think I was very lucky because the guy who was in charge of civil medals at the Cabinet Office was so helpful and encouraging. I kept saying I didn't have anything else to show

him but he said 'Come on, let's not give up!'" The civil servant asked Chris if he could provide any photographs of his mother during her years of service and Chris then came up trumps. "I went off and in mum's collection of old stuff I found some old photos and there was mum in her uniform!" But there were still gaps to fill so Chris quietly recruited his son Robert to casually ask his grandmother questions about her time in the war. Her answers were mentally recorded and the official forms completed. Chris said: "The man in the Cabinet Office then told me the information we had provided was sufficient and Phyllis was justified in having the medal. He sent it to me with a very nice letter congratulating her and wishing her a very happy 95th birthday."

her medal at last

Phyllis with her medal Phyllis was still in the dark until her recent birthday bash where her great-granddaughter Eloise presented the medal to her, surrounded by 23 other family members, including her three sons Chris, Cliff, and Colin, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. There

was even a special visit from her niece all the way from Australia. "She was absolutely delighted and overwhelmed," said Chris. "After the war lots of things were lost or had been disposed of and she thought she'd missed the opportunity. We just pieced everything together from stories she told us but what clinched it were the photographs we found. I wouldn't have got the medal though without the Cabinet Office being so helpful." Phyllis married Maurice on April 26, 1941, her 19th birthday. Maurice served in the British Expeditionary Force, taking a week's leave to marry his sweetheart. Phyllis moved from South London to Wimborne in Dorset in the early 1980s. She moved to Downend after her husband died nine years ago so she could be closer to son Chris, who moved to the area when his company relocated to the South West in the 1970s.

Women's talents? Say it with flowers FAMOUS ladies throughout history have been depicted in floral displays at a church in Hanham. Members of Hanham Methodist Church's flower committee spent many painstaking hours creating the 'Ladies' Day' displays, which were shown to members of the public during the church's annual flower festival from May 13-14. Among the women shown were Princess Diana, Florence Nightingale, Shirley Bassey, Ellen MacArthur and Amy Johnson. There were also references to women from the bible, with Mary and Martha, Ruth and Miriam all featuring in floral displays. Windows all around the church were adorned with mini displays and artefacts showing such women as Malala Yousafzai, Hannah More, Mary Berry and Vera Lynn and were created by the church's flower workshop. Angela Sagar, flower committee secretary, said: "It was very successful. After a quiet start, it got busier and busier then on the Sunday we had more visitors than we've ever had before. "The most popular display was probably the ballerina Darcey Bussell because it was very different but simple at the same time."

n GENERAL ELECTION IT'S nearly here - we're going to the polls again on Thursday June 8 to elect a new national Government. Hanham and Longwell Green is in the Kingswood constituency, which has been held since 2010 by the Conservative Chris Skidmore. He is standing for re-election again. Up against him are Mhairi Threlfall, a Labour Bristol city councillor for Eastville, Lib Dem activist Karen Wilkinson and the Green Party's Matt Furey-King. The seat was considered an important marginal in the 2015 campaign, leading to a host of high-profile visitors, but the 2017 election has been much more low-key.

Opinion polls suggest a Tory win, so the main parties are focusing their attention on the neighbouring seat of Bristol East, where Labour's Kerry McCarthy, who has represented the area for 12 years, could be under threat. However, her Conservative challenger Theo Clarke has hit some difficulties with her campaign after claiming she lived 'near Stockwood' when her home is a cottage in West Harptree on the estate of her uncle, Jacob Rees-Mogg. The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also attracted negative publicity when he visited St George with Miss Clarke and upset worshippers in a Sikh temple by speaking in favour of more

whisky exports to India after Brexit. Many Sikhs do not drink alcohol and Mr Johnson was accused of being disrespectful. The Foreign Secretary also dropped in on Mr Skidmore, meeting activists in the Kingswood Community Association hall before heading out to knock on doors in Soundwell Road. He then went to a cafe in Yate in support of Luke Hall, the MP for Thornbury and Yate for the last two years. The Liberal Democrats, who held the seat for 18 years until 2015, hope their candidate Claire Young, a South Gloucestershire councillor, can win it back. Kingswood candidates were invited to contribute the details on page 15.

n GENERAL ELECTION Kingswood

Kingswood

Labour

Conservative

Mhairi Threlfall I AM standing in this election because I want to make a difference to the lives of all residents across the constituency of Kingswood. I have served as a local councillor for 4 years and I see daily, first hand, the impact of the Tory MP’s cuts on our local services. This can’t continue, it is unsustainable, and is impacting on our economy. I will listen and respond to your needs, working for you, and pledge to protect vital services such as: Education and skills - funding our schools, ensuring that children with special educational needs and disabilities and their parents are properly supported, and improving access to local jobs. NHS - protecting local services, reducing waiting lists and improving access for minor injuries, and empowering front line staff. Local Services - ensuring the local council is adequately funded to safeguard services such as social care, and community facilities and libraries. Fighting cuts to our local police force and fire authority. I will oppose any repeal of the fox hunting ban, and work to protect our green spaces. Labour has a strong, costed manifesto which can be found at www.labour.org.uk but if you want to know more please email me at mthrel@gmail.com

Chris Skidmore THE Kingswood constituency is my home; where I was born and grew up, and where I live with my wife Lydia and our children Clemmie and Henry. It has been an honour to represent my community for seven years. I would love the opportunity to serve local people and the area I know again. I’ve helped thousands of constituents since 2010, and I’ve also been able to successfully campaign for residents to help change the law on issues such as penalties for dangerous driving, working with the families of Ross and Clare Simons. I campaigned for and secured the funding for three new schools in my constituency, in Lyde Green, Kingswood and Warmley, as well as funding for hundreds of new school places, and I’ve led the campaign for a M4 Link to the Avon Ring Road, securing a £500,000 study. I’ve held 15 MP Jobs Fairs in six years, and I’m delighted unemployment in Kingswood has halved since 2010. I will continue to fight for better investment in our local infrastructure; I will continue to protect and preserve the Kingswood Green Belt, making sure that brownfield land is brought forward for regeneration in my area, and I will continue to fight for the maximum possible investment in our public services - in our buses, schools and local hospitals. I respect the decision of the majority of local people in Kingswood who voted to leave the EU. Now we need to put democracy into action and get on with Brexit. I support Theresa May’s plans to secure the best possible deal from Brexit.

Matt Furey-King TWO-party politics isn’t representative anymore. I’m standing in this election because there's not enough honest and plain speaking people in the House of Commons. We’re sick of career politicians being parachuted into safe seats and then just using the opportunity to line their own pockets. The Green Party is here to call them out on it. I'm not a career politician, I'm just a local engineer from Warmley. Most people in Westminster don't seem to understand what's going on in everyday people’s lives. I've experienced the real world and have seen the effects of bad policy first hand. I'm an ex-soldier: served in Iraq and Afghanistan - Parliament needs to hear the voice of the people who they have been putting in tragic, unwinnable wars. I’d fight to get climate change back on the agenda and re-secure citizens online privacy, as well as push for foreign policy that makes the UK a force for good and keeps us safe. I’m also passionate about reforming our electoral system so that it’s representative of what people vote for – less than half of us voted for the Conservatives in 2015, yet they have held 100% of the power. It’s time for change.

Karen Wilkinson

KAREN'S highest priority as an MP would be to help constituents with nowhere else to turn. She would work with the many organisations within Kingswood to help bring additional resources to much-needed services. She would use a seat in Westminster to be vigilant to government misuse of power in any field and to promote and protect the interests of Kingswood residents and businesses, which range from sole traders to farmers to international leaders in technology. She would also further the many parent campaigns on education issues such as schools funding and Karen has been at the forefront of parents’ campaigns to reverse the term-time attendance regulations brought in by Michael Gove in 2013. She would like to use the platform to push for an overarching body to promote the voice of parents and pupils in education policy and to help parents and pupils who are struggling with the system. Karen has lived in the area for over 30 years. Her professional experience has been in financial services and the Legal Services Commission. She has also been a stay-at-home parent, during which time she set up a sustainable gift giving project and community energy project amongst other things.

Something's brewing at Snuffy Jacks A HOTLY anticipated micro pub for east Bristol is just weeks away from opening. Snuffy Jacks Ale House will open its doors to the public on Saturday June 24 after planning permission was recently granted to convert the old Osborne Stationers in Fishponds into a small and intimate bar. Micro pubs are different to many standard pubs and aim to promote conversation by doing away with gaming and fruit machines, televisions, juke boxes and live music. There are now more than 175 micropubs across the UK with two already established in Bristol - one in Gloucester Road and one in Chandos Road. Snuffy Jacks will offer real ale straight from the barrel, traditional ciders, wines and a selection of gins, much of which will be sourced locally from Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wales. There will also be guest

ales from further afield and unfined beers to cater for the vegan community. The micro pub will also serve good quality bar snacks including traditional favourite, pickled eggs. Instead of music and TV screens, people will be encouraged to make conversation and play board games for entertainment. Snuffy Jacks is the brainchild of Fishponds residents John Fallon and David Sibley, who say they have been bowled over by the amount of support in Fishponds that their venture has attracted.

Man jailed after series of handbag snatches A MAN has been jailed after a series of handbag snatches in Kingswood last year. Mitchell Rogers, 27, of Britton Gardens, Speedwell, was jailed for 48 months after he admitted four counts of robbery. The offences happened on Thursday November 10 and Friday November 11 and involved women aged between 30 and 73. In each case a woman was walking along the road when Rogers walked or cycled up to them and grabbed their bag. Rogers was arrested on the afternoon of Friday November 11, when police also recovered a handbag dumped in Bright Street. The woman’s purse, cash and phone were missing. Police say people can deter thieves by: • Walking facing oncoming traffic • Trying to stay near a group of people or heading to a busy place such as a shop or garage • Trying to stay aware of your surroundings – avoid wearing headphones or chatting on your mobile • Trying not to keep all your valuables in your bag – it’s sensible to keep your keys, phone and wallet or purse in an inside pocket instead

John, who has previously worked as an assistant manager with a brewery, said: "We've been flabbergasted by the support from local people. We weren't expecting a negative response but the support we received was unprecedented. "There's nothing like Snuffy Jacks in Fishponds. The concept

is to concentrate on real ales and ciders and there aren't many places that do that. “Over the last year, the growing sense of community spirit has really strengthened in Fishponds and Snuffy Jacks is happy to be a part of it. By turning an unloved premises into the micro pub we hope to contribute to the thriving heart of where we live.” Decor will give a relaxed and cosy feel with dark blue walls. Artwork from local artists and photographers will adorn walls, adding to the sense of community. If you are a local artist and would like to find out more about showcasing your work, email snuffyjacks@gmail.com Hours of opening will be from noon-2pm and 5-10pm Tuesday to Friday, noon-10pm on Saturdays and noon-4pm on Sundays. n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM (AFTERNOON) WI Formal business of the day was discussed at our meeting in May and included our forthcoming visit during August to the WI Centre of Denman College, Oxfordshire. Denman offers a wealth of opportunities to learn new skills on day schools and short courses in the fields of cookery, craft and lifestyle. Members and non-members and even men are always welcome at the College to participate in these programmes. Our membership also passed resolutions for our delegate to take with her when attending the WI National Annual general Meeting in Liverpool later this year. Our invited speakers give monthly talks on a wide range of subjects from the History of Hanham to a Musical Afternoon, and our meeting this month was no exception as we were introduced to ‘Guilty Pleasures’. “What was to come?”, some members asked as our minds went into overdrive. Not quite as could be imagined, but accurate to the title as it turned out and so very fascinating as we spent the next hour or so hearing about famous Bristol companies which was made more interesting with the inclusion of photographs. Will’s tobacco, Fry’s chocolate and brewers Georges & Co were some of those discussed, all of which are of course now sadly distant memories. Being a member of any WI brings lots of ideas for various workshops and organised visits, not only in the local area but further afield too. If you would like to know more about us please drop into one of our monthly meetings, you’ll be made very welcome or give us a call on 0117-904 9994 for a chat. Listen to your heart – it could be beating out a serious warning IN June it is National Heart Rhythm Awareness Week (5 - 11 June) and a consultant at Spire Bristol Hospital warns a heart beating faster than usual might be a sign of much more than just a flutter! Palpitations – the speeding up or changing of your heart beat – can be caused by a variety of things and the excitement of seeing a loved one can be one of them. But in some cases they can be associated with much more serious conditions. Dr Ashley Nisbet, a consultant cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist at Spire Bristol Hospital, explained: “You may feel your heart pounding or beating irregularly – often for just a few seconds or maybe minutes – or sometimes it seems like your heart missed a beat. “These symptoms may seem alarming but, the truth is, in most cases they are quite harmless. However, they can also be a sign of more serious problems involving heart valves or heart muscle function. “Some heart rhythm abnormalities, namely atrial fibrillation, can increase the risk of a stroke in some susceptible individuals so it is important to detect this to allow us to treat patients to reduce their risk.” Dr Nisbet has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of palpitations

and heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). She has particular expertise in ablation of complex atrial arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation and arrhythmias in adults with congenital heart disease, as well as expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients and families affected by inherited arrhythmia syndromes such as long QT syndrome and

Brugada syndrome. She also has many years of experience of general cardiology including the assessment of chest pain, breathlessness, and syncope (fainting). “It is wise to be aware of palpitations and how long they last and how often they occur. For many patients simply eliminating caffeine and reducing stress is all that is required to settle symptoms down. “If the episodes of palpitation last a long time or occur frequently, or if they make you feel light headed or faint I’d recommend you see your GP. They can then refer you to my clinic for assessment which will involve an ECG (electrocardiogram) and sometimes further tests to help clarify whether the palpitations are caused by an abnormality of the heart rhythm.

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 908 2121 Or 07715 770448.

When we understand what is causing the symptoms, we can then explore the treatment options.” she said. “If you are worried about palpitations then the worst thing you can do is to keep it to yourself. Most palpitations are not due to a life threatening rhythm problem and some simple investigations can provide great reassurance. However, some arrhythmias do require more specialised treatment and, as with so many health problems, the sooner we detect the problem, the better your treatment outcomes will be,” she added. If you are looking for more information about abnormal heart rhythms, the causes, symptoms and treatments then you can book onto Spire Bristol Hospital’s patient information evening. On Thursday 29th June at 7.00pm Spire Bristol would like to invite you to listen to a discussion by Dr Nisbet, who will talk to an open group about this topic. She will even be providing free pulse checks for those interested. You can book a place on this event by calling Spire Bristol Hospital’s patient treatment advisers on 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com

n ON THE BEAT

Keep your home secure this summer AS we’re heading into summer, here's a quick reminder about keeping your home secure. An open window or door can let in more than a breeze. It only takes a burglar a moment to walk away with your phone, handbag or wallet while you’re in the garden or another room. Always secure windows and doors if you’re not in the same room, and lock up and set the alarm at night as well as when you go out.

With PC Lee Humphreys

Home security advice: • Fit motion-sensing security lights around your property • Keep tools locked up in a secure shed or garage • Make sure garden furniture and wheelie bins can’t be moved to gain access to upstairs windows • Lock up and set the alarm at night as well as when you go out

If it’s News call 07919 199565 or 07880 731148

•H ide your keys and handbag or wallet safely out of sight •N ever leave keys in the back of the door or window •K eep photographs and a description of items with sentimental value One of the best things you can do to help keep our community safe is join or set up a Neighbourhood Watch. Research has shown that local Watch schemes can reduce crime by a quarter. This is because thieves will avoid areas where they know people will report suspicious incidents to us and look out for their neighbours. You can find out more on our website, www. avonandsomerset.police.uk Remember, if you see someone acting suspiciously around a neighbour’s property, call the

police straight away. If they’re obviously breaking in, ring 999. Otherwise, call the nonemergency number 101: our operators are on hand 24/7. I’d also like to let you know we’ve relaunched our Safe Places service, with a new 24/7 number to help people with communication difficulties stay safe when they are out and about. Once registered, an individual can call the Safe Places number if they find themselves in a crisis situation, such as if they are lost, feel scared or upset and don’t know what to do, or if they have been a victim of crime. Register at www. avonandsomerset.police.uk/ safeplaces or by fill in a form at a police enquiry office.

Can you help Brownies? A BROWNIE pack in Hanham has put out an SOS for more help after two leaders stepped down. The 38th Kingswood (Christchurch Hanham) Brownie unit provides activities and trips for girls aged seven to 11. It is run by Jean Tovey with support from Sally Smith. Jean said: "We have 26 Brownies. We're just managing with a unit helper and me. We do have a young leader but she doesn't start her training until September. The two leaders who have left have been doing it for years but have stepped down because of family commitments so we really could do with a couple more qualified leaders or people who would be willing to undergo training." The Brownies meet on Monday evenings at Christchurch Church Hall in Church Road, Hanham, from 6.30-8pm. They take part in craft activities, work towards badges and go on trips and visits. n GARDENING OUR report last month concluded just as we were starting to harvest our asparagus. The delicious spears our plants produce have a relatively short cropping season of about four to six weeks and the weather plays an important part in this. As many will know, rainfall has been in very short supply over the last few weeks and this unfortunately has not helped, however, considering this important factor we have not done too badly. Asparagus is a long term investment but well worth considering if time and space is on your side. Best planted as crowns, these can take up to three years to become established and very few should be harvested in that time, but afterwards they can crop for up to twenty years. But whilst our season for these will be ending by mid-June it is a good time to consider if you could plant some of your own this coming autumn. Ours are grown in a prepared bed that is approximately 13 x 3ft which contains ten crowns and as with all plants some general maintenance will be needed throughout the year, the main requirement is patience! The plant sale at our Allotment Shop, The Trading Post in Nicholas Lane, St. George, was very well attended last month by plot

hanham&longwellgreenvoice holders and visitors alike. It was a great opportunity for everyone to pick up a wide selection of veg plants, herbs, Hostas and some for hanging baskets. As with all stock in our shop the plants were priced very competitively and most sold out quickly as were some of our tomatoes and sweetcorn snapped up by Stephanie and five year old Hugo Osborne from St. George, who are pictured below. Of our seven sites, Hope Allotments is situated just off the Kingsway, St, George and is home to about sixty plots. Steve, our rep there, tells us that some of these are currently available and although the main season for planting this season’s veg is well advanced it’s never too late to consider taking on your own allotment. For example, summer is actually a very good time to start next year’s plans for growing your own and you could be lifting your first produce next spring! So if you may be interested to find out more about our plots at Hope, please contact us, our email address is at the end of this report and we’ll put you in touch with Steve, or if it’s easier pop into our Trading Post it’s open Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9.00am to 12.30pm. Looking ahead at what you could be planting in your new plot

later this year, seeds of Durham Early cabbage can be sown in trays during late summer, potted on and then transplanted to their growing position in the autumn. These will stand well throughout the winter and start to heart-up by next March. Likewise, broad bean Aquadulce Claudia can be planted throughout October and November and you’ll be picking these by late May. Similarly, various onion sets - that’s small onion bulbs - can be over wintered, usually with great success. But the above are just a few suggestions of what can be planted later this year and these will all be available in our Trading Post in the weeks ahead, but don’t leave it till then to call in and see us. Right now we’re preparing for our Annual Summer Show which is on Sunday August 13. We’ll have more information on this next month, but if you can, call in and pick-up a copy of our show schedule soon. Maybe you’ll be tempted to enter, there’s various classes, not only horticulture, but culinary and children’s. Go on have a go; it's fun for all the family! Courgettes or summer squash as they are sometimes known are favourites with many plot holders and now that the risk of any frost has passed for this spring, June is a favourite month to plant out those that have been grown from seed some weeks ago. Just one plant will quickly establish itself and spread

easily over a square metre or more and when cropping starts they’ll almost double in size on a daily basis. The popular variety Zucchini are best picked at about 15cm long to be the most tender, if left on the plant any longer each one quickly becomes a marrow! If you have a little more space on your plot than that which is needed for courgettes you could try your horticultural expertise with winter squash or even giant pumpkins. Whilst squash make excellent soups for the colder months huge pumpkins are great fun to be carved for Hallowe’en and of course you’ll have lots of flesh from them for soup as well. When fed generously throughout the summer Atlantic Giants can grow to staggering proportions. Perhaps you already grow them each year, if so let us know and we’ll keep a record of who can produce the largest in the area! Sorry no prizes, but we’ll be pleased to hear of your achievements with a photo of your success that we can publish here. We’ll be delighted to hear from you if you would like to get in touch with us; our email address is beaanews@gmail.com. Why not ask us to include you in our email list so you can receive news of any offers or new stock we may have in the shop? Thanks for reading about us, so until next month you can find us on Facebook or visit our web site at www.bristoleastallotments.com.

Looking after your rabbit's teeth Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Sonya Miles BVSc MRCVS

A RABBIT’S teeth are open rooted, meaning they are constantly growing. If not worn down or treated regularly, this can cause some serious problems for your rabbit. Diets high in fibre, i.e. diets high in grass and hay, high fibre forage items and a pelleted based food are best for keeping your rabbits teeth as healthy as possible. Diets that have inadequate hay, too much fruit, veg or muesli mixes will allow the overgrowth and eventual malocclusion (when the teeth do not meet properly) of the teeth. Over grown teeth can lead to spur formation (spikes on the teeth). These spurs dig in to the soft tissues of the mouth causing pain. Maloccluded teeth apply abnormal pressures on each other which will often lead to inflamed and sometimes elongated roots. These can be painful and can eventually lead to the formation of dental abscesses.

There are a number of tell tale signs to look out for that might mean your rabbit has dental disease. These can include subtle symptoms such a change in eating habits, grinding of the teeth (bruxism) or bad breath. More obvious signs can include dribbling (under chin and inside of front legs), runny eyes, runny nose, faecal clagging around back end, lumps on the face (due to dental abscesses) and overgrown front teeth. Once teeth are maloccluded

and have spur formation, the rabbit is unlikely to have normal teeth again. However, they can have a good quality of life if they receive with regular dental treatment and pain relief. Dental treatment should be performed under general anaesthesia by an experienced rabbit-savvy vet. Dental disease in rabbits should never be ignored and regular dental check-ups at your vets are recommended to catch problems early. If you notice these changes or see the above signs you should contact your Rabbit savvy vet as soon as possible. Book your rabbit in for a free health check during Rabbit Awareness Week from 17th to 25th June. You will also receive 10% off vaccinations, Rearguard, Fenugreek and Hay products. Blooming good show for the hospice ALLOTMENT holders and charity workers came up smelling of roses when they teamed up to raise money for St Peter's Hospice. Members of Hillside Allotments in St George organised a plant sale outside the St Peter’s Hospice shop in Hanham, raising more than £450. The event, on Saturday May 27, was an all-round team effort which included not only the growers themselves, but also traders in the High Street who supported the sale. There was also thanks for people who donated quality plants for sale on the day and customers who turned out throughout the morning to purchase from the wide range of plants on offer. Allotment holder Ron Heath said: "It was originally planned that the forecourt outside the hospice shop would serve as an

adequate sales area, however two days before the sale it became apparent that because of the extra plant donations a supplementary area would be needed. "We were delighted when additional space was made available further up the High Street by one trader to accommodate more plant trolleys. This resulted in a steady stream of eager buyers going back and forth between the two stalls to compare bargains. "Many customers were delighted to discuss and compare varieties of plants and discover some they had not considered before, whilst it sparked interest with others of growing their own veg on an allotment, leading to enquiries of how plots are obtained." Is this the fastest family in the west? MEET the fastest family in the West - or at least in our bit of it. This mum, dad and son from Bitton are part of the Great Britain team that was successful at the European Age Group Duathlon Championships in Spain. Neil, Michelle and Tom Kerfoot competed in the Sprint Duathlon, which consists of a 20km cycle sandwiched between a 5km and 2.5km run. They were in different age groups: Neil came 17th in the 50-54 age group, Michelle was 10th in the 45-49 group and Tom was 10th in the 16-19 category. The family train at Longwell Green and Kingswood Leisure Centres, the gym and swimming pools to undertake their training as well as attending the triathlon club training session once a week. As members of Team GB, they have been granted a year’s free membership at the Active Leisure Centres, run by the Circadian Trust. Martyn Hinam, manager at Kingswood Leisure Centre, said: “We are really proud of the team for their brilliant achievements at the European Championships. It’s been great to be able to support them and see their hard work and dedication come to fruition. “We provide for people of all levels here at the centre, from complete beginners to GB athletes - I would encourage anyone with an interest in any sport to come and give it a go. You never know what you could be capable of.” Neil said: “We had a fantastic experience in Soria. As a family, we have trained for triathlon and duathlon for the last seven years so we are really proud to have placed in the European Championships. A big thanks to Circadian Trust and staff at Active Centres for their support.” The team will be continuing their training and hope to qualify again next year.

Simpler - and weekly - green box system is ready to start

Sort It Centre open again HANHAM'S nearest recycling centre has reopened ahead of schedule. Mangotsfield Sort It Centre opened its doors again on May 27 following a three-month refurbishment programme. The recycling centre had to be shut to allow work on the yard behind the site to be carried out safely. The work was essential to prepare the site for changes to weekly recycling collections for households from June as well as to help traffic flow at the site. An extra weighbridge has been added with covered bays for recyclable materials to be unloaded from the new collection vehicles. The public Sort It recycling centre has also been cleaned and painted during the closure. For more information about South Gloucestershire’s Sort It centres visit www.southglos.gov. uk/sortit

HOUSEHOLDERS in South Gloucestershire will soon be able to recycle every week. From Monday 19 June, residents can put all of their recycling containers out for collection every week with their food recycling bin instead of every two weeks. Black bins for non-recyclable waste and green bins for garden waste will continue to be emptied fortnightly. South Gloucestershire Council is introducing smaller black bins for non-recyclable waste for the majority of households, with the current black bins being replaced later this year. The old bins will be collected and sent for recycling. The changes are taking place to encourage more recycling with a simpler collection service. The authority says analysis

of black bin waste has shown that more than 50 per cent could be recycled from home and the changes aim to maximise recycling from households to meet long term financial and environmental targets. Residents will still need to sort their recycling for collection but can choose to use their existing containers or green boxes instead of bags for plastics and cardboard. The weekly collections will mean there are fewer containers to store at home. Boxes will also be available for collection at the Sort It

Smart! Pupils are given new sports kit PUPILS from a school in Cadbury Heath are sporting a new games kit this term thanks to support from a local housebuilder. More than 135 pupils at Parkwall Primary School competed in a design competition to come up with a new-look shirt. The competition was run by Cotswold Homes, the company responsible for the Charlotte Mews development close to the school in Heath Rise. The winning design was conceived by 10-year-old pupil Lily Chick and Cotswold Homes paid for production of 15 shirts. The housebuilder’s head of sales and marketing, Terri HayesPugh, formally handed-over the new kit, telling pupils and staff that her firm’s policy is to do much more than just build and sell new homes. "We like to make valuable and practical contributions to the lives of people living locally," she said.

n SPORT Team champions for the fourth year running

Kai leads his team to victory KING'S Oak student Kai Stenner took his team to victory after he had the honour to captain Swinton Town Academy FC in a tournament in Canada. The under 13s tournament in Calgary included teams entered from various parts of the country and was made up of two groups of four teams with the top two teams competing in the final. Kai, a Year 8 student, was appointed captain for the whole tournament and final, which they won, beating Bonivital FC 2-0. Kai said: “This means a lot to me not only to be picked for the team but to be selected as captain, which means they think of me as a leader. I really enjoyed my stay in Canada. To win makes me really proud."

The hugely successful team from Mangotsfield School

MEET one of the most successful football teams in the history of Mangotsfield School. These lads have been together since they started at the school in Year 7 four years ago and have won all the local competitions for their year group every time. Last month, they became the champions of Bristol for the fourth year running, beating Bedminster Down 9 - 2 in the Year 10 final. The goals came from Max Williams (4), Ryley Towler (2), Bailey Sloper, Oli Hulbert and Joe Beardwell (1). Also for the fourth time in a year, the boys became champions of Gloucestershire in a contest involving more than 80 schools. They beat Archway School 8 - 0. Joe Beardwell and Max Williams each scored three with the other goals coming from Bailey Sloper and Ryley Towler. Their crowning achievement was winning the Woodcock Shield at Ashton Gate on May 23. Head of PE Tristan Hawkins said everyone at the school was incredibly proud of the team. "We realised early on that they were a special group - and they just keep getting better and better. They are unbeaten in all of Bristol and Gloucestershire and they are role models for younger students," he said. Two of the boys are already on the books of Bristol Rovers and one's at Bristol City.

Frys Bowling Club on march Thursday April 27: The Bristol and District Bowls League season started with Frys welcoming Weston Bath who were relegated from division 1 in 2016. Rink 1 soon pulled out a lead for the visitors which they would hold for the duration of the game. The other two rinks were close for half the game, but rink 3 lost their way turning the game in the direction of the visitors. Despite rink 2 grabbing 2 points for the hosts, it wasn't enough for Frys losing the game 36-50 only picking up 2 points from the opening night. Scores: Rink 1: 13-21; Rink 2: 16-11;

Rink 3: 7-18; Frys 36-50 Weston Bath (2-8). Thursday May 4: Frys travelled to BAC for the second league game. A poor start from Frys saw BAC pull away on two rinks. Frys third rink started the brighter, but relinquished their lead through the second half. Despite Frys putting some further shots on the board towards the end, it was BAC taking away all 10 points to leave Frys bottom of the table. Scores: Rink 1: 11-15; Rink 2: 12-23; Rink 3: 12-23: Frys 35-61 BAC (0-10). Thursday May 11: Frys welcomed Henleaze 'A' to Somerdale with

the home side looking to bounce back after two defeats. Frys soon opened up the game with rink 3 picking up some sizable counts to gain the overall lead. As the game was settled thanks to the margin on rink 3, rinks 1 and 2 held their composure in the final ends to help Frys to all 10 points from the 57-37 win. Scores: Rink 1:17-12, Rink 2: 16-13; Rink 3: 24-12; Frys 57-37 Henleaze 'A' (10-0). Thursday May 18: Frys travelled to Knowle 'B' looking to gain their second win. rink 2 in the opening ends. As the game went past halfway, rink 1 was close but rink 3 also started falling behind. The game turned in two consecutive ends with rinks 2 and 3 both scoring a 6 closing the gap on both rinks and closing the overall score. Rink 1 gained 3 shots on their last end to win their rink by 4. Rink 2 was tied going into the final end with Knowle grabbing the 2 points on measure, but a controlled finish on rink 3 who had continued to pull away, saw Frys home to record a 55-45 win taking 8 points from the night. Scores: Rink 1: 1612; Rink 2: 16-17; Rink 3: 23-16; Frys 55-45 Knowle 'B (8-2). * On Saturday July 8, Frys will be hosting an Open Day. www.frysbowlsclub.webs.com.
