Sharing memories of Mark, whose fundraising has topped £200,000 A MUM has published the memoirs of her son who died from cancer at the age of 28. Mark Sims, a talented junior doctor, raised £100,000 for Cancer Research UK after blogging about his experiences of living with malignant melanoma. Since his death last January the fund has now reached more than £200,000 and it is hoped sales from the poignant book, entitled P.S. I have cancer, will boost the total even further. Mark, who attended Cadbury Heath Primary School and John Cabot Academy, was just 15 when he fought off skin cancer, caused by a genetic defect. The following 11 years Mark was healthy but a sudden stomach pain one morning led to the discovery of tumours in his liver, lung and spleen. During his two-year battle with cancer, Mark was determined to do everything he could to raise awareness of the illness so he could help others. Sadly Mark died on January 19, 2017, but lives on through his brutally honest and powerful blog, wrestlingmelanoma.com, which formed the basis of the book. Turn to Page 2

Mark's mum Sue published the 312-page paperback through her company Poetry Space. Proceeds will go to Mark's fundraising pot, which, at the time Hanham and Longwell Green Voice went to print, was just over £201,000. The book contains additional material including a moving groom's speech Mark wrote in the hope that he would live to marry his fiancée Georgie Latcham. Sue, who lives in Davis Close with husband Chris, said: "Mark wrote the book in the last few months of his life based on the blog he kept throughout his illness and there's been some extra material added. "He asked me to publish it for him and, as I already publish poetry books, I was all set up to do that. "The book is due out on March 5 and already I've had so many orders; it's been amazing." Sue said: "The aim of the book is to raise money for Cancer Research to add to Mark's fund he set up when he was ill but it's not just about that. Mark wanted to raise awareness of cancer generally and skin cancer in particular and also how you can still live a full life with cancer, as he managed to do." The book is subtitled 'wrestling melanoma and falling in love', and chronicles how Mark met Georgie, a medical student who has since qualified as a doctor.

Sue said: "Mark met Georgie very soon after he was diagnosed. When the fundraising and blog took off he started to get invitations to talk about his illness. He contacted the University of Leicester, which is where he trained to be a doctor, and arranged to speak to medical students. Georgie was in the audience. She has since said that she'd already fallen in love with him from reading the blog and wanted to meet 'this amazing person'. They just hit it off straight away and started going out within a couple of weeks of meeting." Mark proposed to Georgie in January 2016 on the steps of the Royal Marsden Hospital in Fulham. Sue said: "I was editing the book while Mark was still alive but I never knew about the groom's speech he wrote. He said

Homes on Kleeneze PLANS to build 150 homes on the former Kleeneze site will take pressure off the green belt in Hanham, according to Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore. But the proposals will do little to please shoppers and traders because there are no plans included for a car park.

The site in Martins Road was purchased by Tesco in 2003 but it wasn't until 2012 the supermarket giant finally got permission for a store with more than 200 car parking spaces. A downturn in company profits subsequently led to Tesco announcing in 2016 that it would

site backed by MP scrap the plans and sell the site. Now government agency Homes England is working with South Gloucestershire Council in a bid to redevelop the site for housing and small business use. Homes England is conducting preliminary ground investigation work and other research ahead of purchasing the site. Mr Skidmore has held talks with Kevin Bourner and Alastair McChesney, from Homes England, saying local people want an end to the uncertainty surrounding any future use of the site. The MP said: "I was keen to push for the future of this site to be resolved as soon as possible and I was delighted that Homes England agreed to meet with me to discuss their plans for the former Kleeneze factory site. "It is welcome that part of the site will be retained for employment use and while I am disappointed that a car park can no longer be accommodated on the site, I welcome the fact that

there will be a significant amount of affordable housing and that this development will help ease pressure on the Hanham Green Belt. I will continue to follow this application closely. Above all, residents need certainty that after so many years this derelict site will be put to good use." Kevin Bourner, from Homes England, said: "I am delighted we have the opportunity to purchase this site for much needed housing in the South West. I am also pleased that we will be working closely with South Gloucestershire in order to bring forward 150 homes and provide much needed affordable housing in Hanham." Car parking in the area has suffered since Hanham Community Centre announced that only users of the centre would be allowed to park there. Although there is a 48-space car park in Laburnum Road, drivers sometimes have to wait until a space becomes free because it is so busy.

The Kleeneze site

"Hypothetical" proposals to build 96 homes on Hanham Cricket Club and another 105 houses on green belt land further along Abbots Road were aired last year, leading to an outcry from local people who say services in the area are already under pressure. Tom Stanley, director of commercial property specialists Colliers International which is working on behalf of the developer, said it would be at

least 2019 before a planning application is submitted to the council. Opponents were left disappointed back in November when it was revealed the cricket ground in Abbots Road was not included in a document giving protection to green spaces. The Policies, Sites & Places Development Plan did, however, feature Hanham Mount, Woodland Tennis Club and Conham River Park.

Homes bid for Grange school site

THE former Grange School and Sports College in Warmley could be bulldozed to make way for homes. South Gloucestershire Council closed the school in 2016 and has since been weighing up its options for the site. The council has made a bid to the government's Homes England in the hope it will contribute to the cost of building homes there in order to meet its target of delivering 300,000 homes a year by the mid 2020s. It is not known how many homes could be built or if the school playing fields would be built on. A report to councillors says it would cost £1m to demolish what is left of the old school. Homes England is also working with the council to redevelop the Kleeneze site in Hanham.

Be prepared for The Noise A FAMILY fun event will take place in Longwell Green next month as part of a series of activities across the city organised by charity The Noise. The Noise has been supporting urban communities in greater Bristol since 2001, partnering with local churches and community groups. Last year saw the largest Noise weekend to date with community projects and free family fun afternoons taking place in 11 communities across the city with more than 900 local volunteers. In 2018 only, Bristol Noise is partnering with other organisations to run Hope Bristol 2018 - a four-day community action event in up to 18 communities, including Longwell Green. The Noise will host a family fun event on Saturday April 7 at

United Church (opposite Aldi) and a senior citizens' event at the same venue on Friday April 6.Timings are to be confirmed. Community projects will also be carried out across the area on April 6. The events will build on the 17 years that Bristol Noise has worked in urban communities, serving priority estates.

Hope Bristol takes place from April 4-7 (during the Easter school holidays) and aims to continue the vision of The Noise to ‘show God’s love in practical ways’. Full details will be available in mid-March. Visit www. thenoise.org.uk, www. facebook.com/bristolnoise and www.twitter.com/bristolnoise

n NEWS PEOPLE in Longwell Green are being urged to sign a petition calling for safety measures following two accidents in which cars mounted the pavement and crashed into an estate agents' window. As reported in last month's Hanham and Longwell Green Voice, staff from Blue Sky in Ellacombe Road were left shaken after a blue Volkswagen estate mounted the pavement and careered into the window at 10.15am on Saturday January 27. It followed a similar accident back in July when a red Toyota Auris drove into the window of the same business. Although no one was hurt, staff along the rank say they want to see safety bollards put up to stop this happening again. South Gloucestershire Council has visited the site and agreed to place bollards along the pavement - but is unable to commit to a time scale or even give assurances it will definitely happen due to other priorities. Now staff from Blue Sky, who are supported by other traders along the rank of shops, have launched an online petition because they say the safety measures should be made a priority, especially as many pupils from Longwell Green Primary School use the pavement every day. Blue Sky company director Juliette Maytham said a council engineer had already visited the site: "The council are proposing that bollards are installed to the rear of every parking bay and an additional bollard at the end of the pavement near the school to restrict parking on the pavement around the school. "However, they have confirmed that the proposal will be put forward for the 2019/20 budget and even then it will be point scored against their objectives at that time and if it doesn’t score highly enough it won’t be done." It is hoped that if enough people sign the petition, which already has more than 100 signatures, the council will be spurred into acting sooner rather than later. The petition states: "This footpath is very busy especially during the morning school run and at pick up times. If this had happened during these hours I have no doubt in my mind that this accident could have resulted in serious injury or even death.

Bring on the bollards, say shop safety campaigners

"The council have been to assess the situation and have said that the budget for 2018/19 has been distributed and that it would be considered for 2019/20 although it would be done on a point scoring system and would still not guarantee it would be granted. "We feel this is something that needs to be raised as priority as this is for the safety of the local community. We would hope everyone would sign this petition so we can have this looked at as a matter of urgency before another incident occurs and we are not as lucky as the two previous occasions." Miss Maytham said: "We've had quite a few residents and parents from the school popping into the office to share their concerns about the safety of pedestrians. There seems to be a lot of local support for the bollards. The crashes were pretty full on. It's happened twice now - what's the point in risking it happen again for the cost of some bollards?" Greg Hammick, who runs Express Property Services in the rank, said: "They were both unfortunate accidents, and almost unpredictable as you can't really account for someone losing control of their car and coming up onto the pavement. "Once the first accident happened the council should have been looking to put bollards in place but now the second accident has happened there absolutely must be something put in place."

If it’s News call 07919 199565 or 07880 731148

Longwell Green Primary School is supporting the petition and has been in touch with the council to express concerns about the safety of pupils. Sue Dix, the school's business manager, said: "We were aware of the incident. I contacted South

Gloucestershire independently as we are concerned that if an incident like that happens at school coming in or going out times, it could be really dangerous as a lot of children use that path. "We have put something in the school newsletter for parents so they can go on to the e-petition that Blue Sky set up. "The feeling is that the more people that sign the petition, the more likely it could be that the date is brought forward." The council has ordered a new sign to replace the limited waiting parking sign that was lost during the recent collision and is arranging for the faded parking bay markings to be refreshed. n NEWS A NEW student choir has been formed to mark the anniversary of women getting the vote. Taking centre stage outside City Hall on College Green, more than 60 students from John Cabot Academy, Hanham Woods Academy and King’s Oak Academy performed to at least 1,500 people. The choir, which formed on the day and performed after only an afternoon of rehearsals, sang 'March of the Women' and a new song commissioned for them called 'We Rise.' The day marked 100 years since the Representation of the People Act was passed, granting some women over 30 in the UK the right to vote for the first time. A spokesperson from Cabot Learning Federation, which the three academies belong to, said: "The students behaved impeccably, were responsible and helpful and most of all sounded amazing. We are truly proud that our students were able to play a small part in these major historic celebrations." Penny Gane, chair of Bristol Women's Voice, told students:

n NEWS A CHARITY which offers children summer breaks as respite from radiation caused by the world's worst nuclear disaster is looking for a host family in or around the east Bristol area. The Bristol link of the Chernobyl Children's Lifeline raises money for 16 children from Belarus to visit every summer. The trips to the UK, with its the clean air and nourishing food, can add up to two years to the children's lives, which can be plagued by cancers and heart problems due to radiation caused by a nuclear accident in Chernobyl in 1986. This summer a group of Belarusian boys and girls, aged 10, will be spending four weeks’ respite, each staying two weeks with a host family. Charlie Walker, one of the charity's supporters who lives in Downend, said hosting was a really positive way to make an impact of the lives of the children. "CCLL started after the disaster to help children and their families have a better future," he said. "A continual low level radiation means that children’s immune systems suffer and there are still many cases of childhood cancers and other related illnesses, even now in 2018, as a result of this disaster. So with great care children are chosen every year for these respite breaks. We take our radiation free food, air and water for granted - but even four weeks without it gives an immediate and long term health boost. "All the boys and girls receive free eye tests, dental check-ups

Charity seeks host families for 2018 Chernobyl children

Children from Belarus have previously enjoyed trips to Bristol's SS Great Britain and measured footwear during the stay. On top of this these children are given a hope in their future, from receiving a fun-filled holiday in a loving family home." The charity is looking for a host family for two boys for the second two weeks of their stay, from Sunday July 22 to Sunday August 5. Hosts don’t have to speak Russian as the Belarusian school teachers who accompany the children are experienced and fluent English speakers who provide around the clock support. They are also allocated buddy families for additional support, and activities and outings

are planned throughout the children's stay. Home checks and

DBS will be required. The work of CCLL depends entirely on volunteer donations and local support. Check out their Facebook page Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Bristol (@ccllbristol) for local fundraising events. Charlie said: "Local businesses and organisations are amazingly generous donating supplies, clothing and trips for the children to enjoy. "Get in touch if your business or organisation is interested in supporting us in any way big or small." To host, be involved in fundraising or to arrange a talk for your school, group or work, contact Andy March chair. bristol@ccll.org.uk or visit www. ccll.org.uk/bristol

MPs: We only support Western Option for M4 link A CRUCIAL decision on a possible new junction on the M4 and a link road to the A4174 ring road is due this month. The £500,000 feasibility study into plans for a junction 18a commissioned by South Gloucestershire Council and Highways England was due to be made public on March 2, and going to the council's cabinet on March 12. The council will havec to decide whether there is a case to be put to the Government for the project, which is set to cost between £250m and £470m, depending on the route chosen. Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore, who won the funding for the study after years of campaigning, and Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall, support the idea because they say it will reduce congestion and help businesses in Bristol's north-east fringe but they remain of the view that the junction should be at Emersons Green. There was outrage last year when the first phase of the study suggested a junction and link road at Pucklechurch instead -the so-called Eastern Option. The two MPs met Highways England last month to push the case for the Western Option. They handed over a letter in which they criticised the “cloud of uncertainty” that

the Eastern Option proposals had caused for residents. “We are particularly concerned about the considerable amount of Greenbelt land which would be lost if the Eastern Option is carried forward. This factor, alongside

the destruction of the other valuable open spaces not classified as Greenbelt in the Pucklechurch area, would have a drastic impact on our communities and the residents who live in them,” they said. “A number of residents also raised concerns with us on the levels of increased traffic on the adjoining road network which would surround the Eastern Option link road, including areas of Siston, Warmley, Mangotsfield and others. The increased number of cars on roads such as Siston Lane would be detrimental to the area and pose a significant safety risk. We feel that the Western Option would alleviate the risk while simultaneously reducing traffic on the northern section of the A4174, which often becomes an issue. “An M4 Link next to the A4174 where the two roads virtually touch would help alleviate current congestion and increase productivity for businesses in the West. We do therefore believe that a new junction for the M4 is needed but will only support the proposals if the flawed Eastern Option is abandoned. "It is clear to us by the levels of correspondence we have received that the community are not behind this option and nor are we.”

Upgrade is promised for children's play area A PLAY area in Longwell Green which has been targeted by vandals and arsonists is set to be upgraded. Shellards Road Play Area has seen better days following numerous vandal attacks, including graffiti and fires being set alight on the play train. But now funding for new equipment has been secured and local councillors Toby Savage and Christine Price it will offer better opportunities for play. A consultation seeking the views of what sort of equipment residents would like to see in its place has recently ended and the results will be known in the near future. Possible equipment could include a cone climber and a new slide, as well as converting a cradle swing to a flat one for older children. As part of the facelift for the play area, the broken fence will be mended. The local Conservative councillors were astounded by the vandalism and have fought to secure funding to replace the heavily damaged play train. They have also been working with council officers and police to try to tackle the antisocial behaviour which has blighted the area in recent months.

Councillors Toby Savage and Christine Price at the vandalised play train in Longwell Green The councillors said: "It’s disappointing that a small minority have damaged a piece of play equipment used by some of the youngest members of our community. "We have secured funding to replace it and are exploring with the police and others

Action call over parks and open spaces FRIENDS groups in and around Hanham and Longwell Green are being urged to join a new forum of groups who support green spaces and conservation areas. The 'Friends Forum' is being set up by the Friends of Kingswood Park and is open to all groups across South Gloucestershire who have an interest in looking after parks and open spaces. The move is in response to cuts in council funding and will enable groups and organisations to have a united front. They are asking like-minded Friends groups to contact them and register their interest in forming a forum to exchange ideas and information. Jim Whittaker, secretary of the Friends of Kingswood Park, said: "Groups will have a new collective voice in discussions with authorities and national organisations and this will ultimately help improve the quality of everyone’s

neighbourhood." A parliamentary report found that green spaces across the UK are ‘at tipping point’ through a lack of adequate funding from local authorities and went on to include in its list of recommendations that Friends groups form regional forums. Mr Whittaker said: "We recently attended a meeting of the Bristol Parks Forum and came away well impressed with the quality of interaction

and representation to their authority." Diane Thomas, chair of the Friends of Kingswood Park, said: "Since taking office it has been obvious that we are tackling problems that others have solved long ago! Now with the reduction in local authority resources it is more important that we pool our resources and stand together." Nigel Sharp, of the National Federation of Parks and Green Spaces, said: "In our view there

are many benefits from this collective and collaborative approach, both for the green space community groups and partner organisations - notably the local authority and other land owners or managers." The Friends of Kingwood Park are a voluntary group working in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council to improve Kingswood and its park. Volunteers also work around Kingswood town centre to improve the appearance of the neighbourhood. n FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore

W

ITH spring fast approaching and the changing of the clocks back to summertime now only a month away I wanted to use this month’s column to update you on the developments that 2018 has brought with it so far. I was delighted to see that at

South Gloucestershire Council’s recent budget meeting, a significant amount of funding was approved for maintenance projects in our schools across the local area including a brand new heating system for Hanham Abbots Junior School. This will be welcome news for many students and parents and it is great to see Conservative councillors at South Gloucestershire Council pushing forwards with plans to update and renew our existing schools as well as welcoming new schools to the area with proposals moving forwards for a new secondary school in Lyde Green. As many residents will know, I have long campaigned for better funding for our schools and have consistently supported improvement and capital investment in them as I believe that the needs of our children must come first. We’re about to see one of the largest increases in school funding in the country and I look forward to working with local schools to ensure that they have the resources they need to help our children excel. On a side note,

if any schoolteachers out there are interested in organising a class visit to Parliament then please do get in touch with my office in Hanham on 1007 908 15 24 as I would be very happy to organise this for you. I was also pleased to hear that the play area on Shellards Road in Longwell Green has been allocated funding for renewal and refurbishment. Following mindless vandalism the play area has been out of use for some time, however, I have worked with local Conservative councillors, Toby Savage and Christine Price, in order to ensure that the play area gets back into full swing as soon as possible as I know how important these spaces are to local residents. I also recently met with the local policing team in Longwell Green in order to discuss the new ways of tackling and preventing anti-social behaviour and I do hope that the new measures that are going to be introduced will help preserve our precious local amenities such as this play area for families to enjoy. A few weeks ago I was also very happy to have been invited

to cut the ribbon at the opening of the Baker Street Nursery on Hanham High Street, a new day care centre with up to 60 places for local children. I wish all the pupils and staff the very best of luck, I know that they have got off to a very good start but do get in touch with them as there are still places available. On a final note, I just wanted to let you know that I will be holding my next local surgery on March 9, between 10am11.30am at the Brooks Café in the Park Centre in Kingswood. I am delighted to holding this surgery in collaboration with Southern Brooks Community Partnerships and if you have any issues that you would like to raise with me on the day then please do call my office in Hanham on 0117 908 1524 or email me at chris@chrisskidmore.com in order to book a slot, alternatively, you can speak to Southern Brooks directly in the Park Centre for more information. With all best wishes, Chris

Run the 10k for BUST charity PEOPLE in Hanham and Longwell Green are being urged to support breast cancer charity BUST by joining its team of runners in the Bristol 10K on Sunday May 13. BUST - Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust - was formed in 1991 by patients and is now the major funding partner for the Bristol Breast Care Centre at Southmead Hospital. The charity hopes to enlist as many recruits as possible to boost funds to buy advanced equipment before it is available through NHS funding. The race is its biggest annual fundraising initiative, and the charity is seeking participants who are willing to run or walk the historic Bristol harbourside route to raise money for the charity. The charity's chairwoman, Jenny Wookey, pictured, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 15 years ago, said: "Every year almost 55,000 women and

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

around 400 men in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer. The advances in treatment over the past decade have been tremendous. However, we still need to do more. "Every penny of the money that BUST raises goes towards new medical equipment to aid breast cancer diagnosis and treatment at the Bristol Breast Care Centre and improves the odds of survival for those with this dreadful disease in Bristol and beyond.

"So, if you have ever thought about entering Bristol’s 10K why not make 2018 the year? We all know someone who has been touched by breast cancer – what better reason to take part." Those running in the charity’s team will enjoy a reduced entrance fee of £27 in return for committing to raise money for the charity. BUST was started in 1991 by Frenchay Hospital patients Pamela Corrigan, Carol Thomas and Margaret Twiggs when they learned from consultant surgeon Simon Cawthorn that his team needed a £20,000 ultra-sound scanner. The trio raised the money within two years and their impressive achievement led to the creation of the hospital’s specialist Breast Care Centre with its One Stop Clinic. All members of BUST's committee are unpaid volunteers and to date BUST has raised more than one million pounds for breast care services.

Action in Hillfields RESIDENTS were given tips at the latest meeting of the new Hillfields Community Network to tackle a recent spate of car and van crime. These included: - Take valuables out of your car/ van wherever possible. - Park in public, well lit places close to CCTV if possible. - Try to park with the back of your van up against a wall so the doors can't be opened. The idea of setting up a Neighbourhood Watch was discussed. Residents were also urged to report every incident via 101 (or 999 if urgent). Next meeting is Wednesday March 7 at 7.30pm at St John's Church, Lodge Causeway when community projects will be discussed. For further information, contact ward councillor Anna Keen by emailing Cllr.Anna. Keen@bristol.gov.uk

Defibrillators and Help! Can you join us where to find them on the Toad Patrol? THE FRONT page story in last month's Hanham and Longwell Green Voice about a man whose life was saved by a defibrillator prompted a letter from one of our readers. The gentleman asked if we could publish a list of the locations of local defibrillators so one could be easily located in an emergency. With the help of South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, we have compiled a useful list for our readers. Some of the devices are not available 24/7 and where this is the case, for example at Longwell Green Leisure Centre, the hours are noted. A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: "The more people equipped with the knowledge and confidence to administer CPR and the more defibrillators there are available, the more people we can save. "We encourage all businesses and workplaces to have defibrillators and CPR-trained people available to respond in an emergency situation." SWASFT recommends that all defibrillators are registered with South Western Ambulance Service via their responders team via this website link: https://www.swast.nhs.uk/What%20We%20Do/ register-your-defibrillator-with-swasft.htm This then links to 999 control rooms and computer aided dispatch system (CAD) which indicates the nearest working defibrillator. VOLUNTEERS from in and around Bitton are needed to help save toads and other amphibians from being killed as they cross Golden Valley Lane to breed. Every spring toads, frogs and newts migrate from their winter hibernation sites to ponds, streams and lakes. Toads in particular are very fussy about where they breed and like to return to their ancestral ponds and often cross roads carrying heavy traffic to reach them. They can travel more than half a mile during their perilous journeys back to their spawning ground. Bitton Toad Patrol takes place every night when amphibians are migrating and last year volunteers rescued more than 1,300 amphibians. Weather conditions dictate exactly when migration will be but factors include mild weather (above 6 degrees C), when it's dark, when it's damp and the road surface is wet and when it's calm rather than windy. Bitton Toad Patrol is part of the Avon Reptile & Amphibian Group (ARAG) which has teamed up with Bristol Zoo Gardens to call on people to help collect migrating toads and move them to safe breeding sites. Other toad patrols are held in Fishponds, Chew Valley, Portishead and Bath. Andy Ryder, from Avon Reptile & Amphibian Group, said: "We urgently need volunteers to assist with rescue efforts throughout the local area. "Toads start to move once evening temperatures exceed 5C. They prefer wet evenings without strong winds. The migration period typically lasts for up to four weeks and could start at any time. "To help, you just need to be able to spare a few evenings from 6pm onwards. You will need a bucket, a torch and a high visibility jacket." Anyone interested in helping should download a patrol pack by visiting www.facebook.com/groups/BittonToads/ Those who aren't on Facebook can email Andy Ryder on a_r_a_g@yahoo.co.uk who will then email a patrol pack to you. Bitton Toad Patrol isn't suitable for very young children.

Westerly Showband seeks community help WESTERLY Showband has started the year on a high note by issuing an exciting plan to increase its community involvement. Musical Director Chris Harris said: “The plan’s starting point was the general realisation that music has a beneficial effect on a range of physical, mental and social disorders. This applies particularly, but not exclusively to those experienced by older people. Another related major problem, probably due to the way that society has changed, is that of loneliness and isolation and it is mainly with this problem that the Band recognised it could play a part.” The plan is to stage a series of free concerts throughout the local area. At these concerts the Band will provide a programme of much loved musical favourites from days gone by that everyone will know and can quietly join in with. There will even be a

few sing-along specials, not to mention a few “action” numbers where audience could sway, wave their arms, clap their hands and even perhaps dance a few steps! The singing will be led, as always, by the Band’s resident singer, Alexandra Denman, well

known for her contribution to light-opera, opera and musical comedy in the Bristol area. To make all this happen the band’s board is seeking help from local charities and community organisations to organise audience parties and get

them to the concerts. They are asking for help with providing or organising a church, hall or other suitable venue, free or at a reduced rent if possible, transport facilities, help with setting up the hall, ushering, providing or selling refreshments and fundraising. “You may be able to help in ways we haven’t thought of! If this is so we’d like to hear from you. Naturally an invitation is open to musicians or musical groups who wish to take part in some way,” added Chris. “We do know that there are people out there who recognise the needs of this particular group of people and would like to help in some way.” For further details see the website www.westerlyshowband. com To contact Chris Harris call 0117 956 1950, email cgharris320@btinternet.com

You Can't Take An Elephant On The Bus by Patrick Cleveland Peck This beautifully illustrated book by David Tazzyman is aimed at children 1-6 years old. You can’t take an elephant on the bus –it would simply cause a terrible fuss! Elephant’s bottoms are heavy and fat and would certainly squash the seats quite flat. Find out what mode of transport other animals try, including a pig, camel and whale. The book is packed with funny pictures alongside hilarious rhyming text and will capture children’s imagination Alex, Hanham Library

LESBIAN, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) couples and singles are being invited to an information event for LGBT Adoption and Fostering week. CCS Adoption, Bristol City Council, North Somerset and Action for Children are coming together at the Watershed on Wednesday March 7 so people can learn more about the rewards and challenges of being an adoptive or foster parent. The drop-in event takes place during LGBT Adoption and Fostering week (March 5-11) and is supported by New Family Social, the LGBT network for Foster and Adoptive families. CCS Adoption adviser and gay adoptive parent Frances said: "I adopted two children with my partner and we didn’t experience our sexuality being a barrier to us adopting. Deciding to adopt has been the best decision we’ve ever made. We experience wonderful moments and tricky times like any adoptive parents. Our children are proud of having two mums!" Fly-tipper jailed A MAN has been jailed for more than a year and ordered to pay over £2,000 after being found guilty of fly tipping in South Gloucestershire. It is the longest sentence the council has secured through an environmental prosecution. Daniel Bryant, 44, formerly of Duncombe Road, Speedwell, was prosecuted after a number of fly tips in 2017. The court heard that Bryant set up a business, ‘Magic Rubbish Clearances’, which was advertised using Facebook and business cards. He collected controlled waste for payment. During March his vehicle was seen at the scene of two separate fly tips in Cattybrook Road, Shortwood. One of these offences took place after he attempted to fly tip his load on Siston Common, but was seen by a resident and left, only to dump

the waste on Cattybrook Road. In June he was photographed depositing mattresses at Beach Hill in Upton Cheyney. The pictures were poster on Facebook and received 3,000 ‘hits’. During the investigation, it was discovered that Bryant had been disqualified from driving in May and less than a week later was seen using the same vehicle to carry out these fly tip offences. In court, Bryant pleaded guilty to the two Cattybrook Road fly tips and was handed a custodial sentence of 68 weeks, along with a £2,070.30 in costs and £140 victim surcharge (total £2,210.30). The magistrate drew attention to him committing these offences whie disqualified, and activated a suspended sentence of 16 weeks , added to 52 weeks custody for the fly tips (26 weeks per offence).

Careers advice for students

Positive links with the young

MANGOTSFIELD School welcomed 30 ambassadors from industry into the school hall to give their Year 8 students the chance to question them about their own careers, the industries they work in and their experiences. The session was part of a Year 8 Choices Day for students currently deciding which options to choose for their GCSEs and it also included taster lessons for the new subjects they can study for their GCSEs. Careers co-ordinator Carey Phillips said: "The day was a great opportunity for the business community, students and school staff to come together to talk about future careers and the skills that are important for our young people to develop both inside and outside of school."

It’s an important part of community policing for us to get into local schools and build positive connections between the police and young people. At this time of year we often get reports of rogue traders offering to do household maintenance or gardening work – before carrying it out unnecessarily, to a poor standard, or overcharging. Though thankfully this doesn’t happen often, it does disproportionately affect older people – who are more likely to be at home during the day – and can have a significant impact on their wellbeing as well as their finances. n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM AFTERNOON WI A BRIGHT and cold Monday February 12 did not deter our members from attending an excellent meeting. Thanks were conveyed to several amongst us who had recently been busy knitting baby hats for donation to Bristol and Bath maternity hospitals, these little items are really worthwhile to newly born babies. Everyone was reminded that November this year marks 100 years since the end of the Great War and members agreed that we should not let this memorable date pass without recognition. At the war memorial at Hanham Community Centre a service of remembrance will, as always, be held, and we as WI members will be knitting, crocheting or making felt poppies to be placed on the memorial as our mark of respect to the thousands who gave their lives for us. And in addition to those red poppies we will also be making some in blue, this

is to remember the enormous number of horses who were also killed in action. Our monthly speakers were Margaret and (in her words) her gorgeous assistant Gordon who gave a very informative and funny talk on hats. We might all associate that the Stetson or ten gallon hat, for example, originated in America, how wrong this could be? It was actually first made at Christy's in the 1800s at no less than Park Lane, Frampton Cotterell. Indeed, several references to ‘Hatters’ will be found on a map of the village today. An American, J. B. Stetson, liked the wide brimmed high crowned hat so much he started making his own. Christy's were furious. The result was a long patent fight between Christy's and Stetson who lost the case. Later Stetson had to pay a licence fee to market the famous hat otherwise the legendary 'ten gallon’ might have been lost forever. Margaret also reminded us of the social aspect of wearing hats with the examples on display for us to enjoy,

STAYING Steady is the title of fitness classes being run in leisure centres in Bristol this spring. The classes are aimed at helping older people improve their independence, stay mobile and healthy whilst also offering a fun way to stay active and socialise. There are estimated to be around 58,800 people living within the city council boundary who are aged 65 or over and 55,000 (95 per cent) are believed to be living independently. Of this 16,000 (around 30 per cent) fall at least once a year, rising to 50 per cent of those aged 80 or over. To help reduce the risk and rate of falls, the council is encouraging older people to

particularly in the 1940s and 50s, schoolboys in knitted balaclavas, top hats for Ascot, bonnets for the Salvation Army. And if you’ve ever seen a photograph of men at a football match, all would be wearing caps. As usual, we were delighted to have enjoyed a very interesting talk on her hats, and when asked where she kept them all, Margaret replied, “in boxes in my spare room!” Hanham (Afternoon) Women’s Institute meets the second Monday of every month at Hanham Community Centre from 1.30-4pm.

LONGWELL GREEN WI AT our February meeting Dr Francis Burroughs kept members laughing as he told the story of glass making from Roman Britain to the present day. It was an extremely interesting and informative

talk, with members fascinated to hear that modern glass blowing is carried out in the same way as in Roman Britain and that clear glass was first made in the 17th century. We also had the opportunity to handle various pieces. Our next meeting is March 16 when the talk will be about Brunel's ship, the SS Great Britain. Upcoming events include trips to see the Terracotta Warriors in Liverpool

and a tour of the Houses of Parliament. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail. com or telephone 0117 986 4782. Sandra Hill

n PHARMACY

We can ease parents' fears

0117 9322293 24 Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9BA Column by Jess Williams of Ellacombe Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being whilst also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care

NHS England has launched a National campaign to encourage parents of young children with minor illnesses to take them to pharmacies rather than GPs or A&E. It said each year there were about 18 million GP appointments and 2.1 million visits to A&E for conditions that a visit to the local community pharmacy first could help resolve – saving the NHS the equivalent of more than 220,000 hip replacements or 880,000 cataract operations. Four out of ten parents of children under five would go to a GP if their child had a minor illness, such as earache, diarrhoea or stomach ache, while five per cent would go directly to A&E. So when should you take a child to the pharmacy? Is this not just a way to save NHS money? We have been writing here for a while, making the case that Community Pharmacists are highly

trained NHS health professionals, completing five years initial training, able to offer clinical advice and effective treatments for a wide range of minor health concerns right there and then. The team have also completed accredited training for their roles. We can assess symptoms and recommend the best course of treatment or simply provide reassurance, for instance when a person with a minor illness will get better on their own with a few days rest. However, if symptoms suggest it's something more serious, pharmacists have the right clinical training to ensure people get the help they need. Many pharmacists like us at Kellaway Pharmacy have also undertaken additional clinical training to be able to offer vaccinations such as Meningitis B and even prescribe medicines privately. We offer expert advice

Never too young to go wild outdoors AVON Wildlife Trust has restarted its regular termtime wild-play sessions for families with underfives at Feed Bristol in Stapleton. The pioneering nature education centre gives children and their parents and carers a chance to learn about nature in the city and have fun together outdoors. Activities at the My Wild Child sessions include making naturethemed wild art, minibeast hunts, songs, storytelling and much more. Sessions also give parents and carers an opportunity to spend time with their children in a local green space and to connect with other families and the surrounding community. The sessions are on Friday mornings from 10-11.30am. They cost £5 per child for entry to the site, and include a healthy snack. The review, which takes place this spring, will involve consulting with residents and councillors to see what is and isn't working and if there is anything that can be done better. A new report, carried out by the University of the West of England (UWE) for Bristol City Council to assess the impact of 20mph so far, has recently been released and will be used in the review process. UWE’s Bristol Twenty Miles Per Hour Limit Evaluation (BRITE) study found that, on average, speeds on more than 100 surveyed roads have reduced since the 20mph speed limits were implemented, with average speeds of between 19mph and 26mph on 20mph roads shown in the report. On 30mph streets, average speeds on the roads surveyed were below 30mph in every area. The lower speeds were also found during night and summer times, when there is typically less traffic to slow motorists. Cllr Mhairi Threlfall, Bristol City Council’s cabinet member for Transport and Connectivity, said: "It is still early days in terms of assessing the impact of 20mph, but the results from this report are a positive indication that lower speeds are making it safer to get around in Bristol. "What we need to establish is where 20mph appears to be working and where it may not be as effective, and the statistics from this report give us a good indication of that. "However, it is important that we have a clear idea of how 20mph is affecting individual areas and I look forward to working closely with local councillors and residents as we undertake a review in the spring." The review is expected to take place over an eight-week consultation period. Any resulting changes that are agreed will take several months to implement. No decisions have yet been made on which roads will be included within the review. The 20mph speed limits were introduced in 2014 and 2015, following a pilot scheme in 2010 and full council approval for a citywide roll out in 2012. Meanwhile, South Gloucestershire Council is continuing with its policy of rolling out 20mph limits outside all schools in the district.

Thanks a million! Baby Bank Network marks 1000 referrals BRISTOL’S Baby Bank Network has celebrated its 1,000th referral. The charity was set up three years ago to collect pre-loved baby essentials and give them to families in need. The volunteers say they are now helping the equivalent of 10 families a week. The charity works with dozens of referral partners including NextLink, Shelter and Home Start as well as midwives and health visitors across the city. Volunteers put in hundreds of hours a month at the Fishponds warehouse to check, clean and prepare packages which include cots, prams, baby clothes, toiletries and books ready for collection by referral partners. Co-founder and trustee Becky Gilbert said: "It’s a humbling moment to step back and realise that what started as an idea has very quickly evolved into tangible support for families in need. “We live in a wealthy city in and it breaks my heart to think that there are babies that go without the basics - but with statistics showing that one in four children in Bristol are living in poverty we’ve seen demand increasing year-on-year for our service. Our main challenge now is keeping up with that demand.” Baby Bank Network currently helps babies under the age of one but has ambitions to extend this to all under 5s. It is also exploring options

to get its own van and volunteer driver so it can deliver the items to referral partners and help even more families. Dr Gilbert added: “If there’s anyone out there who can help us with a van or delivery service, we’d love to hear from you. We’ve got plenty of families needing our help, plenty of items

in the warehouse to give them but what we don’t always have is the means of getting these items out.” If you can help with a van/ delivery service, please drop Baby Bank Network a line at: becky@babybanknetwork.com More information at: www. babybanknetwork.com

Royal double for Warmley Park's water sports crew MEETING a member of the royal family is something many people never experience in their lifetime. But for students at Warmley Park School it seems to be a regular occurrence. For not only did they rub shoulders with Princess Anne, just weeks later they said hello to Prince Edward. Students from the special school for pupils aged from three to 19 with learning difficulties and additional needs met both royal family members when they visited All-Aboard Watersports Centre on Bristol Harbourside. All-Aboard provides opportunities for all members of the community, regardless of ability, age or background, to take part in a wide range of water sports on the historic docks. Princess Anne, who is president of the Royal Yachting Association, visited in January to help celebrate the charity’s fifth anniversary. As well as launching a new powerboat called Andiamo, she also had great fun when she started a canoe race between children from Warmley Park School and Elmlea School in Westbury-on-Trym. The youngsters, who demonstrated great team skills during the race, were awarded their certificates by the Princess Royal. The following month her brother, Prince Edward, also met youngsters from Warmley Park when he paid a visit to the charity. The Earl of Wessex popped in to the centre in his capacity as Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award Scheme Ambassador, taking

over the role from his father, Prince Philip, who recently stepped down from royal engagements. Students from Warmley Park were invited to meet the prince after they spent several weeks with the centre before a two-day paddling expedition on the River Wye as part of their bronze DofE Award Scheme. All-Aboard spokeswoman Sarah Harding

said: "Both Princess Anne and Prince Edward were absolutely fantastic with all the students and were really interested in what they'd been doing here with us. "It's also been brilliant for us to have some recognition of what we are doing with students like those from Warmley Park and all the other groups that come down to the centre and benefit from what we can offer."

n NEWS FROM THE ALLOTMENT

Growing crops for compost?

HARDLY a month goes by in this column without the mention of compost and there’s good reason for this, it is after all, the lifeblood of any plot. But even so, to some our headline may seem bizarre. Compost bins on some plots are there merely too be filled with plants that have reached the end of their useful life, so actually growing plants simply to help fill these containers may seem a little strange at first. There’s good reason for this – but which plants would you use for the purpose? For example, who would really want to take their favourite bedding plants in their prime or beautiful vegetables and deposit them on the heap? The answer is something which is relatively quick and inexpensive to grow, put simply, Green Manures. Green Manures come in a wide variation and all offer a win-win solution for many problems; the list is actually quite extensive and diverse in their objectives in life. But without doubt all are excellent multi-taskers, some add nitrogen to the soil; others help break up heavy clay, the resulting foliage of all varieties can be dug-in to the soil which adds humus, or cut and chopped as an excellent addition to the compost bin. And if that was not enough, should you have an area of your plot that is expected

Pumpkin bed

to be dormant for several weeks, a cover of green manures will supress weeds and protect the soil from erosion whilst gaining the soil improvements just mentioned. The only perceivable downside of green manuring is that the dense carpet of green that will be produced makes a perfect environment for slugs and snails. Nevertheless, if specifically required for composting, the foliage if cut young will bulk out the contents of your compost heap and quickly rot down. This green matter will rapidly generate heat at the start of the decomposing process, but once cooled tiny red brandling worms which have been described as ‘the intestines of compost’ will move in and spend their days munching through half their body weight of the dead organic matter, which is deposited out the other end as worm castings – a refined, nutrient rich material that when added to soil will both condition and fertilise. Taking this process a step further, one of our plot holders, who’s asked to remain anonymous

but for now we’ll call him Ern, has recently planted an area on his plot with Mustard and Buckwheat green manures specifically for the thick foliage alone that these plants will produce over the coming weeks. The main reason being is that he has created a temporary compost bin as a bed for growing giant pumpkins and he needs to fill it as quickly as possible with nutrient rich material. Hopefully, Ern says the contents of the bin which will contain a mixture of other waste items such as old grass cuttings, straw, spent hops, leaves, coffee grounds, brown cardboard and all peelings from the kitchen will feed the ravenous plants throughout the summer to produce some handsome specimens (watch this space) for our Pumpkin Show at the end of October. The containment of worms has yet another useful addition to the plot by adding a ‘wormery’. This produces small amounts of rich composted material but is mainly used for the worm wee that is collected as a by-product. Commercially produced worm homes are available but it is relatively easy to make one. Simply, these consist of three plastic boxes, ones that do not let light through and will nest inside each other to form a tower. Cut out the bottoms of the boxes and replace with strong one inch wire mesh, securing it with cable ties. The tower needs to be supported over bricks so a tray, about 3 inches deep can slide underneath to collect the liquid. But before so doing add a further piece of wire mesh slightly larger than the base of the boxes to form a bridge, add a perforated plastic sheet immediately on top of this mesh and under the first box, this will stop worms dropping through and drowning in the liquid. Cut the plastic sheet larger than the tray to stop rain entering. The

first box is then half-filled with damp compostable material such as general kitchen waste (no cooked food) is fine. Add to this as many as possible of bright red brandling worms, you’ll find these in an existing compost heap, but not the fatter earth worms. Add another layer of material to cover the worms, then half-fill the other two boxes with scraps, place inside each other to form a tower. Add a lid to keep out rain but do not make it air tight. The worms immediately get to work consuming and recycling the organic matter in the first box. Once food becomes scarce in the bottom level the worms will naturally gravitate upwards to the next box through the mesh leaving a box of worm castings behind, which can then be emptied onto your plot as excellent compost. The worms having moved up to box number two can now become the lowest box, the empty box is refilled with scraps and is replaced on top of the tower. And so the cycle goes on, the worms will rapidly re-produce and happily continue life in the tower, but by regularly rotating the boxes they never reach the top! The tray will collect highly charged liquid compost that when emptied will need to be diluted 20 to 1, better than any liquid fertilizer you can buy. We have produced a leaflet if you would like to learn more about green manuring or if you need help building a wormery please get in touch with us. Bristol East Allotments Association. n VETS' ADVICE

Why rabbits are considered exotic species Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Sonya Miles BVSc CertAVP MRCVS Exotic Species Veterinary Surgeon

THERE are 1.3 million pet rabbits in the UK making them the country’s third most popular pet. They are often classed as exotic species due to their unique health requirements and as such it is always wise to seek out a rabbit savvy vet for your pet. For instance, unlike cats and dogs, rabbits’ teeth grow constantly and unless the rabbit is fed a high fibre diet (predominantly grass and hay) to help them grind them down, their teeth they will keep growing and develop spurs that dig into the soft tissue in the mouth. This causes pain and a rabbit will often no longer want to eat certain types of food, or any food at all. Dental disease in rabbits can also do more complex things like damage the tear duct or nasal passages of the rabbit. This is just one of the reasons why Specialist treatment is often sought for rabbits by their

owners. It is important to see a vet that understands the complex disease processes that can occur in these seemingly uncomplicated pets. Rabbits also need lots of space. Without good mobility they can develop skeletal problems, obesity and sores on their feet. Even though it is a common way of keeping rabbits, a conventional hutch is not enough. Rabbits should always be kept in pairs with their housing being a minimum of 6ft x 2ft to provide enough space for them to make at least three hops and stretch right out. They should also be able to stand on their back legs without their ears touching the roof. Rabbits need lots of exercise and therefore, ideally, their house should be attached to a minimum of an 8ft run. The Exotic Species Department at Highcroft Veterinary Hospital

in Whitchurch, Bristol, provides Specialist level care for rabbits and other exotic species. It is also proud to be one of only a handful of veterinary practices in the UK to have been awarded Gold Status by the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund (RWAF)* To book an appointment, call Highcroft Veterinary Hospital in Whitchurch directly on 01275 832410. Alternatively, for more information call Longwell Green Veterinary Surgery on 0117 932 3660 *The RWAF is responsible for checking and recording all rabbit savvy vets in the UK. Vets on this list are required to have specialist equipment to deal with rabbits when they become unwell, and they must demonstrate an advanced understanding of a rabbit’s health and welfare needs.
