Popular fair is ready to return HANHAM Christmas Fair is back after an absence of a year and promises to be better than ever. The annual event was pulled last year and warnings were issued that if enough volunteers fail to come forward the fair could be scrapped. But now organisers say everything is in place for the event to go ahead on Saturday December 2 from 3-6pm. The fair, which will see the High Street closed to traffic, will coincide with Small Business Saturday so it is hoped families in Hanham will turn up in force to support their local shops and traders. The main attraction will be Santa himself who will visit with his sleigh, taking time out of his busy schedule to meet youngsters in his grotto, which will be set up in MP Chris Skidmore's office. Fairground rides and attractions for younger children are planned as well as numerous stalls selling festive goods. Local charities including St John's Ambulance, BRACE, RSPB, Headway Bristol and PDSA will also feature at the event. Lead organiser John Ball, an active member of the Hanham Community Partnership, said there are more than 20 confirmed stalls with people still booking them. "In previous years we had an issue with kids coming in late from other areas

which meant the police had to be called in. Now the fair will take place earlier to make sure we don't have issues with older children. Because it's taking place between 3 and 6pm, hopefully younger children will still be awake and it will attract more younger families. We're unlikely to make a profit because of the bills for insurance and road closure but if we do, the money will go to charity. "The community has really supported previous events and we're hoping for good support again this year." Traders had originally decided in June 2016 not to hold last year's event because of a lack of support but changed their minds in September when offers of help increased. They applied to close the road but police objected following trouble with youths outside of Lidl after the 2015 fair. By that time, it was too late for traders to employ extra security to fulfil safety regulations to enable the road closure to be agreed and the fair had to be cancelled. Organisers are looking for support during the fair, so if anyone would like to help as a steward or one of Santa’s helpers or would like a pitch for a stall, email John at hanhamchristmasfair2017@ btinternet.com Further details can be found by visiting the Facebook page Hanham Christmas Fair.

Sticking their necks out for giraffes PUPILS from St Anne’s CE School in Oldland Common who buried a time capsule at Wild Place Project earlier this year have returned to the attraction to visit its newest inhabitants. The boys and girls visited Wild Place Project to meet three new giraffe and find out about the work the attraction is doing to protect the creatures in the wild. Their previous visit was arranged by Keynsham-based construction specialists Dribuild who built the giraffe house. The pupils had a tour of the site and buried a time capsule. Now they have returned with Dribuild’s business development manager to look around the new £1.1 million exhibit, see the three new long-legged inhabitants and meet one of the organisation’s conservation experts. Osiris Doumbe, a conservation lecturer for Bristol Zoological Society, which operates Bristol Zoo and Wild Place Project, explained about the society’s project to help save giraffe. He said: "It’s great to be able to welcome the children back here to show them how much the attraction has developed and to find out about the threats facing giraffe in Africa. "Giraffe numbers have fallen from 140,000 to less than 80,000 in just 15 years. Having the opportunity to share our work with young wildlife enthusiasts is a great way of inspiring the next generation of conservationists." The giraffe exhibit at Wild Place, off junction 17 of the M5, links with Bristol

Zoological Society’s field conservation project in Cameroon, to help save one of the few populations of Kordofan giraffe left in the wild. Kordofan giraffe are under threat from habitat loss due to huge herds of cattle in the area and poaching for bushmeat. Conservationists from Bristol Zoological Society are currently undertaking a critical research effort to map the habitat and conduct a population census of some of the remaining Kordofan giraffe using drone technology. They hope to establish whether there is a sustainable population of this highly threatened giraffe subspecies that they can work to conserve and help save from

extinction. To support this conservation effort, the school pupils will now raise money to help pay for new motion-sensor cameras for Society conservationists to take out to Cameroon to support their population monitoring work. Bristol Zoological Society, which owns Wild Place Project and Bristol Zoo Gardens, is a conservation and education charity that relies on the generous support of the public not only to fund its important work but also its vital conservation and research projects spanning five continents. Warning after spate of overnight burglaries POLICE are issuing a renewed warning about car keys being targeted by burglars while households sleep following a spate of incidents. It follows five so-called ‘creeper’ burglaries which took place overnight from Wednesday to Thursday October 4-5. The keys to a Renault Megane were taken from a house in Seymour Road (ref 5217226944), just after 2am on the Thursday. The car was stolen and found abandoned in New Cheltenham Road at about 3am. Between midnight and 6am thieves broke into a house in Baden Road, Kingswood (ref 5217226978). They stole a handbag, which was later found empty by a resident in Grimsby Road, an iPad Air, a Hewlett Packard laptop, cash, bank cards and Apple and Samsung mobile phones. The burglars then made off in a black Mini One and a bronze Mercedes C180, stolen with keys taken from the house.

Teenager arrested after witness calls police POLICE have praised a witness whose call about suspicious behaviour in Hanham led to an arrest and the recovery of suspected stolen property. Officers were called to Hunters Road at about 1.30am on Tuesday October 31, after a witness reported three men getting out of a car and behaving suspiciously around people’s homes. Police searched the area, finding a similar vehicle abandoned in Bank Road, Kingswood. The car contained tools believed to have been Overnight Wednesday to Thursday a home in Courtney Way, Kingswood (ref 5217226991) was broken into. A Michael Kors handbag and purse, cash in dollars and sterling, an Armani ladies' watch, a Hugo Boss men’s watch, a Pandora necklace and earrings, several Playstation games, an Apple iPad mini, John Paul Gautier perfume and a Sky Q hub were taken. Officers are investigating two

stolen from a van in Warmley at about 12.30am. A teenage boy was arrested in Church Road, Kingswood, at about 2.30am, on suspicion of burglary and later released under investigation. Neighbourhood Sergeant Steve Davey said: "Communities who look out for one another and report suspicious incidents are a real deterrent for thieves – it’s why Neighbourhood Watch works so well. I’d like to thank the witness who called us straight away to report suspicions."

other incidents in which nothing was stolen. The first happened in Cloverlea Road, Oldland Common (ref 5217226933) at about 1.20am on the Thursday. The householders disturbed two men in balaclavas who had entered the property. The men made off empty-handed. Just after 3am the front door of a house in Orchard Road, Kingswood (ref 5217226948) was forced but the two would-be

burglars made off empty-handed after the doorbell went off. Neighbourhood Sergeant Darren Warr said: "Always turn the key when you lock up at night and set the alarm if you have one, and never leave your keys in the back of the door, or in view from a window or letterbox. Put them safely out of sight. If you can help, get in touch with police online, www. avonandsomerset.police.uk or call 101, quoting the reference.

Penny for this guy - just £240 to go ...miss Don't CHARITY campaigner John Billitteri is on the home straight with his fundraising mission to collect one million pennies to help injured service men and women. John was given a huge boost from pupils at Courtney Primary School in Kingswood who brought along their pennies when he visited them earlier this month. Singer John, 58, who goes by the stage name of Frankie Johns, launched his campaign in 2014, pledging to travel around the city on his bike and trailer, encouraging people to donate their spare change. The money - which equates to £10,000 - will go to Help for Heroes, a charity John has been raising money for since his X-Factor contestant daughter Marissa sang on a number one single in aid of the charity. During a special assembly at the school in Courtney Road, John told pupils all about his

n NEWS A PICTURESQUE cliff top walk in Hanham has been restored to mark the 60th anniversary of the creation of Avon Valley Park. The Panorama Walk, boasting spectacular views overlooking the Avon Gorge, was established in 1957 when Avon Valley Park first opened but fell into disrepair, requiring urgent work to make the location accessible to visitors. Now, thanks to a ÂŁ39,000 grant from Cory Environmental Trust in Britain (CETB), the walk has been restored and has been officially unveiled by Cllr Ian Blair, chair of South Gloucestershire Council. The grant from CETB funded the replacement of existing cliff top fencing, clearance works, new signage and access paths. In addition, a newly created seating area has established a focus point at the summit providing panoramic views over the valley. South Gloucestershire Council's community spaces team provided the designs for the project in support of the Friends of Avon Valley Woodlands.

Spectacular walk unveiled Robin Champion, secretary of the Friends of Avon Valley Woodlands, said: "The project has made this beautiful area more accessible to a great number of people who are now able to enjoy the fantastic vista and views across the valley." Located within the Avon Valley Woodlands nature reserve, the Panorama Walk forms part of Avon Valley Park. The surrounding woodlands are home to a wide variety of wildlife and are an ideal location for people of all abilities to enjoy getting closer to nature. Angela Haymonds, CETB Trust secretary, said: "The trustees were delighted to fund the restoration of the Panorama Walk. Thanks to the new viewing area more people will be able to take in the scenery and the wonderful views of the River Avon." CETB funding is available

Bravery in the blood BMX rider Jensen Egan has been crowned South West Champion for the second year running despite competing just weeks after witnessing his dad suffer serious injuries. The nine-year-old watched excitedly as dad Jason competed in the 30 and over masters category of the British BMX Championships, which took place in Derby in August. The 31-year-old, who had already won the South West regional title this season, was in podium position when another rider hit his wheel, causing Jason to fall off, breaking his hip and leg. But despite this, brave Jensen went on win the South West BMX Championship, travelling to Bideford in Devon with mum Kiri just two weeks later. “Jason had some quite severe injuries which Jensen watched which was really hard for him,” said Kiri. “However, they are very used to seeing crashes and although Jason was taken to

hospital by ambulance none of us realised the severity of his injuries at the time. “A few weeks later it was the South West Championships and originally I didn’t intend to taken Jensen. But despite seeing his dad’s accident, he didn’t lose the love for the bike so I decided I would take him. He won in an incredible race and I was really proud of him.It was double heartbreaking as last year Jason also won the SW championships alongside Jensen.” Sadly Jason was still in hospital so was unable to be there to witness his son’s victory. “We had to go on our own and that made it all the more poignant. The riders earn their places at the championships throughout the year in their regional series so, as long as Jason was being looked after, we felt we should go. “I ran to meet Jensen at the finish line and when he won he said, ‘I did it for my dad’. for BMX champion Jensen, 9 incredibly proud and both myself and Jensen were crying. Jensen rang his dad to tell him and they had a little moment together.” It was equally tear-jerking at the presentation evening. Kiri said: “They give out end of season trophies from regional events on the same night. Because Jensen’s dad had won the regional series this year Jensen went up on the podium and took the trophy for his dad whilst holding up his dad’s jersey with his name on. That was very overwhelming to watch.” Jensen, who has also been crowned Bristol BMX champion for past four years, has now been placed 16th in the country,

finishing eighth regionally despite racing in an older age category. Kiri said: “It’s been a very good year for him.” Team Egan, as the father and son duo are affectionately know, travel throughout the year competing in regional, national and club level races from Scotland to Cornwall. They raced the past two seasons for national team, Factory Team Bikes, but from

2018 will race with Psykopath Industries, a national team based at Bristol BMX Club in Patchway. Jensen, a pupil at Barley Close Community Primary, attends weekly training and racing from April to September and monthly in winter. Meanwhile Jason is continuing to recover. He is out of his wheelchair and is using crutches but is unable to return to his job as a panel beater in Longwell Green for at least four months. Despite this, Jason is keen to get back on his bike and compete once again. Kiri said: “He had to have screws and bolts put in, going from his hip right the way down his leg. Doctors say they don’t really have an outlook as to if or when he’ll ride again but we are being positive and Jason has every intention of riding again. “The doctors say he is going in the right direction and Jensen is taking it very well. We are all

Jensen in action and, above left, with his dad Jason trying to be positive and think that his dad will race again. “It hasn’t put Jensen off at all; he’s on his bike all the time. We are an absolute BMX family and Jensen is the centre of it.”

As well as visiting the green sites which are being targeted for housing, the walk will celebrate the beauty and history of Hanham Abbots. The first port of call will be

Hanham Cricket Club where 96 homes could be built. Sights of local interest along the walk include the pond, the Pound, Stephen's Green and ancient St Georges Church, a ‘Chapel of Ease’ adjoining Hanham Court. There will be an optional uphill climb to a viewpoint above the church, before returning on footpaths north of Abbots Road to view the second of the possible housing development sites and the area proposed for the relocation of the cricket ground. Walkers will return to Abbots Road at Crossleaze Farm where those who wish, can make a detour to the Elm Tree Pub or continue back to the start. The walk is approximately 2.5 miles. Stout footwear is advised. People should meet at the car park on the corner of Abbots Road/Whittucks Road at 11am.

Anyone interested should RSVP to keephanhamabbotsspecial@ gmail.com • So far, only "hypothetical" proposals have been put forward to build 96 homes on the Hanham Cricket Club site as well as another 105 houses on green belt land further along Abbots Road. The owner of the green belt - named in a document as a Mr F Francis - is putting forward a case to remove the land's protection. If successful, this would pave the way for him to find a developer to build housing to meet the shortfall of homes in the region. Any proposals would include relocating the cricket club to the bigger site. Already there has been a great deal of hostility to the suggestion, with Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore launching a petition against any future plans to build on the area's green belt.

These children just love to read CADBURY Heath Primary School is leading the way in South Gloucestershire with its success in the Time4Reading initiative. It is the first school in the district to achieve bronze, silver, gold and platinum awards in the scheme, which launched in September 2015 with the aim of emphasising the importance of reading for pleasure. The school has a well stocked library and encourages people of all ages to make time for reading. Headteacher John Ridley said: "We already had a good

reading culture but felt there was still room for improvement and opportunities to make reading more fun for all. This is why we embraced the Time4Reading initiative.

“To achieve the awards, we had to demonstrate that we encourage reading across a spectrum of activities. This enabled us to review and improve upon initiatives already

in place to enable children to become readers for life. "We are very proud of what we have achieved with reading at our school.”

Relive your Colston Hall concert memories YOUNG musicians from King's Oak Academy will be holding their annual Christmas concert at the Bristol Colston Hall next month and former students are being invited to join them. This year's event, on December 7, will be even more special than usual because, it could be the last. Tim Warren, team leader of performance

and participation at King's Oak, said he is hoping parents and former students will join in to make it extra magical. "The Colston Hall is closing for two years in May for modernisation and this might well be the last concert which we hold at this prestigious venue," he said. "To make this final event even more special we would like to invite parents/carers

and past students of KOA and Kingsfield School, its previous name before becoming an academy, to join with us." The invite is for roles both on and off the stage, or in any possible capacity. Information about rehearsals will be put onto the King's Oak Academy Facebook page or people can contact Mr Warren directly by emailing warrent@kingsoakacademy.org.uk

Rock on kids! A CRAZE for decorating and hiding pebbles has taken off in Hanham and Longwell Green over recent weeks. The Bristol Rocks Facebook page, which has more than 20,000 members, encourages people to post photos of any painted stoned they find and then hide them again to bring pleasure to others. Many families in the area enjoyed getting out and about with their rocks over half term.

Other side of the mike for Emma QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

STUDENTS at Digitech Studio School in Warmley turned the tables on BBC Radio Bristol’s Emma Britton. During a three-hour live breakfast programme broadcast from the school, the young people who run Digitech’s own radio station, Phoenix Radio, interviewed the presenter on her

own show. Earlier, Lis Jolley, principal of Digitech, spoke to Emma on air about the school, which specialises in creative and digital skills alongside an academic curriculum. Students and staff - and even a school dog - from other academies in the Cabot Learning

Federation also featured in the programme. Dean Blake, from the CLF, said: “This was an amazing opportunity for our presenters and producers to work alongside experienced professionals and my hope is it will inspire them to consider a career in broadcasting in the future.”

n ON THE BEAT

Beware doorstep tricksters

With PC Lee Humphreys

HAVE you had people cold-calling or delivering leaflets for home maintenance or gardening work? We’ve had recent reports of people offering to clean driveways or make roof or gutter repairs. While many legitimate firms use promotional leaflets, it’s a favourite tactic for so-called ‘rogue traders’ – people who persuade householders to have work done unnecessarily, to a poor standard or who overcharge. There’s a link between these rogue traders, who may have convictions for fraud and other offences, and burglars. There was a recent incident of a man who offered to make repairs for an elderly householder in Bristol, then stole cash from him and made off without doing any work. Thanks to a call with vehicle details from a concerned witness, we made an arrest. We work closely with South

Gloucestershire Council’s trading standards officers to deal with offenders and want to remind you how you can steer clear of unscrupulous traders: • Be suspicious of any business leaflet which only contains a mobile number, with no other contact details. Genuine businesses will include the trader’s full name, address and landline telephone number • Don’t deal with cold callers on your doorstep • Don’t open the door – use the door chain or deal with them through a window or letter box • Get three quotes for work • Do not pay for work or materials in advance or hand over a cash deposit • Don’t agree to a trader starting any work straight away – you have a legal right to a cooling off period before work

starts • Failure to provide a notice of cancellation rights is a • If you do not receive your cancellation rights in writing, the trader cannot hold you to the contract • Keep your cash in the bank, not at home You can report rogue traders through Citizens’ Advice on 03454 04 05 06 or by emailing trading. standards@southglos.gov.uk. South Gloucestershire Council’s website, www.southglos.gov. uk has a ‘Buy with Confidence’ directory along with more information about rogue trading and doorstep crime. If you’re concerned about anyone calling door-to-door in your area – especially if they are visiting elderly or vulnerable people – call us straight away on 101. If a crime’s underway, ring 999.

How can I help my stressed dog? THERE are a number of situations when dogs can experience stress and anxiety. For example, dogs can develop fear towards loud noises such as fireworks, or they may find travelling, stays at kennels, moving house, visits to the vet or groomer stressful. It can also be something a dog experiences regularly, e.g. being left alone during the day, meeting unfamiliar dogs/people on walks. Thinking about how a dog is coping with a situation is important, alongside providing the support they need to cope. In all situations the dog will display signs of trying to escape from whatever they are finding stressful. These signs may see include: • Looking away • Muzzle licking or yawning • Low body posture • Restlessness • Trembling • Elimination • Vocalisation – barking, whining • Salivation • Panting If the stressful situation is not resolved using these tactics

the dog may either continue the behaviour or adopt different coping behaviours, for example: • Hiding away • Decreased appetite • Increased sleep or disturbance of sleep patterns • Overgrooming Identifying what a dog finds stressful is an important first step. This may be obvious (for example going into a vet practice) but it may be less obvious (for example when out on a walk), therefore it may be necessary to seek the advice of a qualified behaviourist in order to understand what is going on. A stress prevention and treatment program should focus on gradual change, consistency and reward. This can be achieved in some situations by slowly exposing the dog to the stressful stimulus. For example, a dog that finds travelling in the car stressful may be helped by starting off by rewarding the dog for remaining calm around the car, progressing to sitting in a car with the doors open and the engine off, having the

engine on before even thinking about travelling anywhere. This way the dog is exposed slowly to the elements of travelling in a car. The same can be considered for sound sensitivities, a CD can be played quietly in the background whilst a dog is rewarded for calm behaviour, and over time the volume of the sounds are increased. Dog Appeasing Pheromones (like ADAPTIL by Ceva Animal Health) have been shown to help dogs cope with situations they find challenging. They mimic the natural pheromone that is released by a mother dog a few days after giving birth to her puppies, giving them a sense of comfort and security when they are near to her. It can also be used alongside behaviour training, as it lowers the dog’s anxiety allowing them to concentrate on what they are learning. For more information on Dog Appeasing Pheromones, please feel free to contact us at Longwell Green Veterinary Centre 0117 932 3660.

Chris Skidmore Kingswood MP writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

I WANT to use this month’s column to update local residents on recent developments surrounding the Justice 4 Ross & Clare campaign and changes to the law regarding dangerous driving. Readers will well remember the tragic incident which took place on Hanham Road in January 2013 where Ross & Clare Simons were killed by a disqualified driver who had 11 existing convictions for dangerous driving and for driving whilst disqualified. Devastating incidents such as this affect us all and have a lasting impact on our local communities. I believe that the sentence which is passed on such reckless actions should properly reflect the loss of two innocent lives. Therefore, I have long campaigned to see that the law changed in this area so that bereaved families can see justice served for those criminals who continue to flout the law – arguing that the maximum penalty for death by dangerous driving should be life imprisonment. Over the past five years I have stood alongside Ross & Clare’s family and have consistently raised this issue at the highest levels of Government - I met with the former Prime Minister, David

Cameron, the Secretary of State for Justice and in 2014 I raised the issue in a Parliamentary debate which led to a change in the law introducing stricter sentences for drivers who kill whilst disqualified. I have been humbled by the level of local support from Hanham and Longwell Green residents and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who took the time to sign the 15,000 signature petition which I handed to 10 Downing Street alongside Ross and Clare’s family in 2014. As some people may already know, last week the Ministry of Justice announced that it will be bringing forward proposals to amend the existing laws surrounding dangerous driving in order to make them stricter and to increase sentences for dangerous drivers. These proposed changes will include increasing the maximum sentence for dangerous driving offences from 14 years to life as well as bringing stricter laws into force covering careless driving whilst using a mobile phone or whilst under the influence of drugs. This represents a significant step forwards for the Justice 4 Ross & Clare campaign and for the families involved and sends a clear

November, 2017 message to dangerous drivers about the consequences of driving in a way which endangers others on the road. The new offences will ensure that those who kill through reckless driving will face sentences which properly reflect the terrible damage and harm which they cause to families and local communities and I’d like to thank the families of Ross & Clare for their dedication and hard work in securing these changes. This is their victory – ensuring that, despite the cruel loss of their loved ones, they fought bravely to ensure that something positive is achieved – potentially saving the lives of others in the process. As ever, if readers are ever in need of assistance, or if you would like to book a surgery appointment, then please do not hesitate to get in contact with me at my office in Hanham on 0117 908 15 24 or by emailing chris@ chrisskidmore.com. n BOOK REVIEW

Kingswood History Society OUR October our topic was ‘The Dramway and Avon Wharf’. Jim Pimpernell gave us an insight into his findings while researching for an MA in Landscape Archaeology. The Dramway was a horse-drawn railway system that ran from Coalpit Heath, southwards to the River, near Keynsham. Its purpose was the transport of coal from the various pits en-route to river barges for onward transportation to customers as close as Bristol, as far away as London and all points in between. Jim gave us the background to its construction in the 19th century and its short life, overtaken by more economic means of transport. He gave a description of the workings and we saw photographs of the buildings and topographical features that remain today. It was a most interesting presentation that broadened our knowledge of the area. On November 7 our topic will be ‘Cleeve and Beaufort Military Hospital’ – and on December 5 we will have our AGM, Christmas raffle and American supper, followed on December 6 by our Christmas meal at the Severn Valley Railway. All surely unmissable! Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month (March – December) at 7.30pm in Room 4 at the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the civic centre, BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www. kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including tea/coffee and biscuits. Annual subscription is only £20. Paul Hanmore

A Night on the Orient Express By Veronica Henry THE Orient Express. The very name conjures up luxury, mystery…..and romance. For the lucky passengers boarding this iconic train in London an adventure beckons. Two young people have won their places on the train in a competition but neither is looking for romance. In fact, neither entered the competition- they were entered by friends. Will they hit it off as they enjoy the journey? Others have been lovers for a long time but have been parted by very different artistic lifestyles. Is it finally time for them to admit how much they mean to each other? Then there is the woman on holiday with her new boyfriend and his two stroppy teenagers who have their own problems and concerns to worry about. Does she really want to be part of this family and is her new boyfriend the man she thought he was? By the time they all reach Venice many of these issues have been resolved and brought to a satisfactory conclusion, but often by a roundabout route. I find Veronica Henry’s books very enjoyable and very easy to read – you just want to keep on turning the pages to find out what happens next. Escapism at its very best. Julie, Hanham Library

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM (EVENING) WI THIS October we celebrated our 35th anniversary by holding a very successful birthday party. The event was attended by 43 members who were encouraged to come along dressed in the WI colours of white, purple and green which was also the theme for the table decorations made by our own members. We were treated to a wonderful hot and cold buffet supplied by Janine Grant and her friend Jane. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this and the celebrations continued with entertainment from the singing duo of Les Watts and Geena. They entertained with favourites old and new. We also held a raffle with prizes either donated by members or bought in specially for the event. It was a hugely enjoyable evening. Next month, on Saturday November 11, we will be holding our main fundraising event of the year – our everpopular annual Autumn Fayre.

It will take place at Hanham Community Centre from 10am-1pm. There will be 30 stalls selling a range of goods including art work, books, jewellery, baby gifts, bric-abrac, Christmas gifts and, of course, traditional WI cakes. There will also be hot and cold refreshments. There is free car parking and free entry so why not come along to browse and brunch. Dianna Coles

HANHAM (AFTERNOON) WI

AT our well attended meeting on October 9 we discussed the outcome of a letter that one of our members had written to Which Magazine about. In question was the compostability of the material that tea bags are made of. Seemingly, the magazine informs us that only about 70 per cent are degradable. Whilst this may sound like a positive proportion, the remaining percentage is nevertheless a lot of tea bags that potentially go to landfill. Avid gardeners

November, 2017

amongst us will no doubt confirm that when placed in a compost heap the bags will still remain after months of being attacked by all kinds of bacteria and worms. Unless of course you are a compost geek (one I know who shall remain nameless), dries our tea bags and opens them for the tea which is spread at the allotment, the empty bags are then disposed of! Another matter that concerns those of us that have them and arose from the recent WI AGM at the BAWA Club, Filton was the use of bus passes. Whilst various governments seem to consider these as expensive luxuries and a bargaining tool for votes, many who possess them insist they are a necessity for a wealth of reasons. But the meeting brought to light that the latest proposal, if only to chip away at them and antagonise users was to restrict their usage from 9.30am. Our talk at the meeting was by Richard Martin and his wife, trustees of the Julian Trust

Night Shelter charity which was founded in 1986 for support of the homeless in Bristol when a local vicar allowed those in need to sleep on his church pews at night. Today, the non-profit trust has achieved an ‘Award for Industry’ and owns a building in St Paul's which is staffed by 170 volunteers where eighteen beds, hot meals, showers and even washing facilities are provided and funded by donations. The services the trust offers today is at an all-time high, particularly at Christmas and New Year when they provide up to 60 beds and of course, lots more additional meals. Is the flu jab safe? Is it for me? Busting the myth... 0117 9322293 24 Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9BA Column by Jess Williams of Ellacombe Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being whilst also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care

NOW is the time to get your flu jab. The earlier you do so the better protected you are. However, there are many myths surrounding flu and the flu vaccine. Here are some common ones and the truth behind them. Flu is just like having a heavy cold, isn’t it? The flu is much worse than a heavy cold. Symptoms come on suddenly and sometimes severely. They include fever, chills, headaches and aching muscles, all leaving you laid up in bed. If you get complications, you could become seriously ill and be hospitalised. Up to 10,000 deaths yearly in UK are attributed to the Flu. I heard the flu vaccine gives you flu. No, it doesn’t. The injected flu

If it’s News call 07919 199565 or 07880 731148

vaccine given to adults contains inactivated flu viruses, so it can't give you flu. Your arm may feel a bit sore and some people get a slight temperature for a couple of days afterwards. Other reactions are very rare. The vaccine has an excellent safety record. I never get flu or I’ll just get antibiotics from my GP You may only get mild flu but you can still pass it on to other vulnerable people. Flu is caused by viruses – so antibiotics that work against bacteria can’t help. So, who exactly is eligible to receive a flu jab? At Ellacombe Pharmacy, we offer the free NHS funded flu jab, without appointment, to anyone who is over 18 and at a risk of getting flu. These include people aged 65 years and over

with weakened immune system (cancer treatment) with certain medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease), pregnant women who receive a carer's allowance or are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if they fall ill Unpaid main carer’s of family, friends or neighbours are eligible for the free NHS jab. Remember, it takes about two weeks after vaccination to gain optimal protection. So don't delay, just come in and get your jab today. Speak to us for more advice or contact your local GP surgery.

Gary sets charity goal FORMER Bristol City manager Gary Johnson has launched an £830,000 appeal for Bristol Heart Institute. Johnson, now manager of Cheltenham Town and father of City coach Lee Johnson, was keen to back the fund after having triple heart bypass surgery at the BHI in March. He said: "I can’t say how much I appreciate the amazing care and support I received from all the staff at the BHI. I wouldn’t be here without them and I can’t thank them enough.” The appeal will raise funds to buy the latest surgical and diagnostic equipment for the city centre BHI, which reats 40,000 patients each year, performing over 500 keyhole surgeries a month and 17,000 diagnostic scans annually, at a cost of £46 million. https://www.aboveandbeyond. org.uk/appeal/bhiappeal

Frys Bowls Club celebrates a season to remember THE final game of the Bristol and District League season saw Frys host Avonvale. It was the visitors who held the upper hand for most of the night. Frys were unable to get much going with only rink 1 able to salvage a final point by earning a draw from the 38-52 loss. Frys finished 5th in the final standings on 92 points with Weston Bath winning the division and Long Ashton earning the second promotion place. Scores: Rink 1: 18-18; Rink 2: 8-15; Rink 3: 12-19; Frys 38-52 Avonvale (1-9). Season Record: Played: 18; Won: 9; Lost: 9; Shots for: 852; Shots against: 833: Shots difference: 19; Points: 92. Frys Bowling Club brought their centenary season to an end with the annual Presentation Dinner where the season's

trophies were handed out. The pairs final was not able to be played this year and will be completed in 2018. The finalists for the pairs are Bill Gregory and Pete Rumble playing Jonathan Day and Derek McCaig. The Triples Day in July was another successful event, with Christopher Day, Mick Funnell and Mary Buck coming runners up with Jonathan Day, Geoff Kershaw and Pete Rumble winning the Triples competition. The novices saw a final between Malcolm Hanks and Don Gourd, in which it was Don Gourd winning his first singles title. The Len Hardwell Memorial Two Wood once again saw Jonathan Day in the final, but it was Nick Grenfell who took the Two Wood title. A few days later Nick Grenfell and Jonathan Day met

in the handicap final. A stunning performance from Jonathan Day saw him take home another handicap title. The Championship final was played between Stephen Day and Jonathan Day. The game was played through a prelude to the September storm. As the game went into the darkness, despite a late comeback it was Jonathan Day taking home another championship. The presentation marked the end of a special season for Frys, the highlight of the season being a successful match against the Somerset Bowls Executive to mark the centenary season - a day that will live long in the memory of those who took part. St George in Bloom 2017 Didn’t we do well? WE were delighted to have been invited to the awards ceremony of St George in Bloom 2017 and throughout our Association receive no less than eleven awards from The Right Honourable, the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Cllr Lesley Alexander. Prestigiously, the Chairman’s Award went to Plot 20 at St. Aidan’s Allotments whilst we received five Highly Commended and five others for Outstanding Achievements. The awards ceremony was a great opportunity for us to learn more of how St. George in Bloom has played an important part in our community. Whilst thanks must go to their willing volunteers it was evident that much valued support has also been provided by many local businesses who obviously want to share in the growing success of the area, as indeed we as an Allotment Association look forward that we can achieve even higher horticultural standards with St. George in Bloom 2018. During late autumn our plots offer a somewhat different appearance from that of just a few weeks ago. Most if not all our

summer crops have long finished and been cleared away to reveal bare patches of ground, and left unattended weeds and grass will almost certainly begin to appear there. To help stem any unwanted growth throughout the winter the ground could be covered with large cardboard boxes (bike boxes from the local cycle shop are excellent) or black plastic sheet may be quicker and re-useable. But best of all, spread a mulch of homemade compost over the area. This will feed the soil over the coming months in readiness for next season and supress any weeds at the same time, and should any annoying green shoots pop through the surface, simply hoe them off. Consequently this month, it can seem as if everything starts to turn against us at the allotment, with days becoming shorter, colder and usually wetter, but the months of November and December do in fact have their advantages. Winter vegetables will soon be ready for harvest, leeks for one and parsnips in particular will need frosts to turn their starches into sugars and produce their distinctive flavour. These shorter days are also a great time to consider what was successful on the plot this year and what wasn’t whilst it’s still fresh in

our minds (if like me, notes are not always written down when they should be) and decide our plans for next year. Bear in mind of course that crop rotation is important, not only does this reduce the risk of any disease building up in the soil, but actually one crop succeeding another helps new growth. For example, follow nitrogen-fixing legumes such as peas or beans with nitrogen-loving leaf or fruiting crops such as lettuce or tomatoes. Make a list too of seeds you’ll need next year, take stock of the tools you have, any need replacing? Thermal gardening gloves are a real bonus to keep the cold and wet out. A few ideas perhaps for someone’s Christmas wish-list who’s always difficult to buy for! Making early preparation for those crops you want to grow next year is essential, and one seed almost everyone will include and want to grow is potatoes. Whether you have a large plot or just a patio you can grow them easily in bags or buckets and as we’ve said in our reports before, the tastes and textures are always exceptional. Our allotment shop will as in previous years, have an excellent range of seed potatoes of over thirty-five varieties and can be bought singly if you want to try just a few of several different ones. But this year we are offering a new twist to start our annual sale, by opening our shop on New Year’s Day from 11.00am to 3.00pm

no less! We’re inviting everyone to come and join us; our kitchen will be serving bacon butties and veggie soup. It will be an opportunity to well, shall we say, for the family to take in a little fresh air after the recent festivities and pick-up where we left off before Christmas and at the same time look forward to the new gardening year ahead. Make a note of our potato sale in your diary, or if you’d like us to remind you a few days beforehand please send us an email, our address is just below. And finally for now, you may remember our report last month included an idea to start broad bean seed germination; ours are now underway and will be ready for planting out soon. To help them through whatever the weather throws at us over the next couple of months our allotment shop supplies a thermal net which we have used to create a protective, snug tunnel for the plants to develop in. Our picture, taken at the end of March this year, shows how well the plants had progressed throughout last winter which produced a crop of beans ready for picking a few weeks later. If you would like more information of thermal net or how we set-up our tunnel please call in at our shop or drop us line.
