Self-service library? That's not what we're fighting for PEOPLE in Hanham will have a chance to tell South Gloucestershire Council what they think of the latest planned library cuts - but they have been warned that keeping the service as it is now is not an option. As revealed in the Voice last month, the council has come up with a scheme to have Hanham Library - and others - open seven days a week using a swipe card system. Staffed opening hours at Hanham are set to be cut from 41.5 to 26. Councillors voted on September 7 to go ahead with the new plan, known as Open Plus, in spite of protests from library supporters including Save Hanham Library campaigners. The group intends to keep up its battle ahead of a final decision in February and is looking into alternative sources of funding to allow more staffed hours at the library. "We feel there are no times in the week when Hanham Library is not well used and no activities or events which are not highly valued," said campaigner Abi Unwin. She urged library users to put forward their views during meetings and consultation. Full story: Pages 2 and 3

Your chance to CHATTERBOOKS for children or a coffee morning for elderly people – which are the most valuable activities at Hanham Library? Users will be asked later this year to share their views with South Gloucestershire Council on how the service can best be provided within a reduced budget. It's all part of a package agreed by councillors last month aimed at saving half a million pounds a year on libraries across the district. They have come up with a scheme to keep libraries open from 9am to 8pm seven days a week but unstaffed outside “core hours”. The swipe-card system, known as Open Plus, will be tried out at Bradley Stoke library and is likely to be rolled out across the district from October 2017. Core hours at libraries will be reduced, although not by as much as originally proposed. Hanham is set to be open for 26 hours a week instead of 41.5. The council is planning a new round of consultation in which people will be asked which days and times libraries should be staffed. Users will also be invited to say what they think of the idea of access to unstaffed libraries, although they have been warned that extending opening hours is not an option SGC can afford. Save Hanham Library campaigners, who collected more than 3,000 signatures earlier this year against proposed cuts to the service, are urging people to take part in the new consultation, attend information meetings, and put pressure on councillors in the

hope of bringing about a change of heart before a final decision is made in the New Year. Abi Unwin, from the group, said that although the proposed 26 hours a week was better than the original 18 hours, it was still not enough. “We feel that there are no times in the week where Hanham Library isn't well used. There are no events or activities which aren't highly valued. We don't want to make this choice: we want to keep our library fully staffed and open at its current levels,” she said. One option for increasing opening hours would be for parish councils to fund additional staff time, so group members will be attending Hanham Parish Council and Hanham Abbots Parish Council meetings in November to ask them to consider this, Mrs Unwin said. An open forum meeting to discuss libraries will take place at Kingswood Library on November 10 at 7pm. The subject will also be on the agenda at a community engagement forum at Hanham Community Centre, also at 7pm. The decisionto pursue the Open Plus system was taken by the council's Environment and Community Services Committee at a meeting in Thornbury on September 7 in spite of concerns expressed by Save Hanham Library representatives and others. They were unhappy at the introduction of Open Plus, which was not one of the options put forward during the first consultation. Hanham Councillor Heather Goddard, chair of the ECS

influence library of the future committee, said: “It is very clear that people in South Gloucestershire value their libraries and while we have to make savings, we want to ensure that these facilities remain at the heart of our communities into the future. We are very excited with the prospect that new technology could actually make our libraries available to more people, more of the time. “I believe that many library users and potentially many who cannot get to a library during current opening hours, will look forward to the prospect of being able to browse and borrow books, use the computers and use other library services when the buildings would normally be closed and unavailable.” Councillor Ian Boulton, Labour’s lead member on libraries issues, said the Conservatives were seeking to use Open Plus as a fig leaf for their large-scale cuts to South

Gloucestershire’s library service. Library supporters raised doubts about the cost and reliability of the Open Plus system, They expressed concerns about the loss of trained librarians and the security risks of unstaffed libraries, especially

as there were no plans for livemonitored CCTV measures. Georgina Tankard, from the union Unison, said: “Open Plus raises huge inequality issues.” It could present difficulties for teenagers, elderly people, women, black and minority

ethnic people, the geographically isolated and the visually impaired, she said. The council's decision to use funds to reduce the charge for green bin collections rather than support libraries also came in for criticism.

n NEWS PARENTS have won a stay of execution for the popular Rocking Horse Day Nursery in Warmley. They began a campaign after learning that the longestablished nursery had been told it had to leave its base at the former Grange School site in Warmley at Christmas. More than 1,000 people signed a petition urging South Gloucestershire Council to give the nursery, which has been based at the Grange for more than 25 years, more time to find an alternative venue. Campaigners took their plea to the council’s Children, Adults and Health Committee and then to the Policy and Resources Committee, whose members voted unanimously on October 5 to extend the nursery’s lease until the end of the academic year. There was further good news for parents this month too. Following publicity for the campaign, which won the support of Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore, the manager of Sir Bernard Lovell Sports Centre came forward to offer the nursery some land on its site - a mile away from the current home. This is one of several options being actively pursued by the owners of the family-run nursery, which has about 70 children on its books. Councillor Jon Hunt, who proposed extending the notice period to summer 2017, acknowledged that some parents were struggling to find suitable alternative childcare. “It wouldn’t be fair on the parents or the children at the nursery to force them to try to find alternative provision in

the middle of a school year, he said. “Unfortunately they cannot stay at the Grange indefinitely because the buildings need to be demolished, but we have decided to offer an extension to allow parents to find somewhere else for their children and for Rocking Horse to find alternative accommodation.” Save our Nursery campaigner Laura Williams, speaking after the meeting, said: “When we realised the council wanted to demolish the buildings, we knew there was no way we could stay on indefinitely – but we just wanted a reasonable time frame in which to move to a new home. Parents have been lobbying councillors and we’re delighted that their efforts paid off and the nursery has been saved. We can all relax a little now – knowing our children are safe where they are.”

Nursery owner Julia Davies added: “We are over the moon with this decision – we were always going to struggle to complete a move within six months and it left us facing a very uncertain future indeed. We are now working hard on

securing a new home in order to provide continuous and ongoing nursery provision in the area. We’ve been overwhelmed with the support we’ve received from parents and the community would like to thank everyone for helping to save our nursery.”

Up Pomphrey -and then up the aisle WHAT do most couples do on the morning of their wedding day? Have a relaxing bath? Get pampered? Maybe sip a little glass of bubbly? Not so for Liam Royle and bride-to-be Laura Sturgeon. For the sporty couple chose to take

part in their favourite pastime the Pomphrey Hill Parkrun. Liam turned up for the 5k run at 8.45am wearing a jacket, top hat and bow tie. Not to be outdone, Laura donned a tutu and veil for the run, which was well attended by family and friends wanting to wish the couple well. As Laura had hurt her foot, the pair volunteered as time keeper and tail runner. Laura, 31, received huge support from her pals at Bristol Vegan Runners who turned up in force to give their support. The couple, who live in Kingswood, started attending the parkrun shortly after meeting two years ago. "It was Laura's idea," said Liam, 26. "She just said 'Would you like do the parkrun on our wedding day? We can get dressed up and run together'. I thought it was a really nice idea." The couple left Pomphrey

Gymnast off to fly the flag for Team GB MORE than £1,000 has been raised to enable a Longwell Green sportswoman to represent Great Britain in one of the biggest competitions in the gymnastics world. Tia Collins, a member of the senior women’s team at Majestic Gymnastics, was successfully selected in April last year for the European Championships, which take place in Slovenia this month. Tia, 17, who has been training hard for the contest for the past 18 months, needed financial support because she doesn’t have a sponsor and gymnastics is not a funded discipline in the UK from the Lottery or the Government. To help get the cash together to cover the costs of the training camp, flights and accommodation, an online funding page was set up by the owner of Majestic Gymnastics, Michelle George, and Tia was inundated with donations, many from people she doesn’t know. To date Tia, who started gymnastics when she was five, has had £1065 donations from 23 people, including some big donations of £100. Writing on the page, Michelle said: “Thank you so much everyone for all your support. I know Tia and her family really

appreciate it and they couldn't be doing it without you all! “This last 12 months has been a huge commitment from the gymnasts, the coaches and of course their parents not only from an intensity point of view but a financial point

Speed bumps installed Braving the shave SPEED bumps are being installed to curb traffic speed in Long Beach Road, Longwell Green. One will be between Hopland Close and Sunnyvale Drive and the other between Bakersfield and Ravenswood. The work is scheduled to be completed by October 14. South Gloucestershire Council is also planning to put speed bumps in Mill Lane and Victoria Road in North Common. This is one of several road measures on which it has been seeking people’s views. There are proposals to reduce a speed limit and place a time limit on parking in a couple of roads. In September 2013, the council made a resolution that, as far as practicable, roads used by pedestrians and cyclists near all schools in the district will be covered by a 20 mph speed limit. The latest scheme is to reduce the speed limit from 30 mph to

20 mph on roads near Cherry Garden and St Anne’s schools. The following roads affected by this scheme are Cherry Garden Lane, Cherry Wood, Highfield Gardens, Lodge Drive, Kenilworth Drive (part), Oaklands Drive, Oakleigh Gardens, St Annes Drive, St Helens Drive, School Road, Warwick Close and Withington Close. The restriction is set to come in next year. The council also wants to prohibit vehicles waiting at any time in Chiltern Close, Cloverlea Road, Hazelbury Drive, Highcroft, Mill Lane, Millfield Drive, Neads Drive, Poplar Close, Poplar Road, Quantock Close and Victoria Road in North Common. A 20-minute parking limit is planned between the hours of 8am and 5pm Monday to Saturday on Victoria Road. Details may be found on the council’s consultation website.

mum and daughter lose locks for charity SOME say it was a 'bald' thing to do but for Hanham's Sara Hayes and daughter Maddy, they were just doing their bit for charity. The pair agreed to have their long blonde locks shorn to raise money for Cancer Research and raised a whopping ÂŁ3,000. The head shaves took place during a fundraising event at AEK Boco Football Club in Greenbank Road. Cheered on by a huge crowd, the brave duo put themselves in the experienced hands of Hanham hairdressers Kirsten Toghill and Amy Newman. Before the shaves, Kirsten and Amy divided their hair into four ponytails which meant it could then be sent to the Little Princess Trust, a charity which makes wigs for children who have lost hair through cancer treatment. Sara, 44, a Slimming World consultant, said: "A friend of mine from the football club who did a lot of work for charity

Going, going gone - Sara and Maddy have their heads shaved to raise money for Cancer Research passed away suddenly back in April. Although he was super fit, he had an underlying heart defect and sadly collapsed and died during a charity bike race. When I was at his funeral I kept hearing how much he did for charity. Funerals can cause you to reflect on yourself and I thought,'At my funeral what would I be known for?' "I decided I was going to do something - the most drastic

thing I could. "We both had about 10 inches cut off. I wish I'd done it in the summer when it was a little warmer though! "Maddy took a long time to decide she wanted to do it. She said she would, then changed her mind. Then she was going to have half her head shaved but in the end she said she wanted to have it all off. Girls of Maddy's age can be so precious over their

hair but she was as brave as a soldier. I'm so incredibly proud of her." Maddy, 13, who attends Hanham Woods Academy, said: "At first I felt a bit shocked and sad but I kept reminding myself of what a good cause it was for. It's much easier to style now!" The event included donation buckets, food and a raffle with prizes including champagne, wine and bowling vouchers.

Teens who helped woman in distress win praise from the Chief Constable TEENAGE students from Sir Bernard Lovell Academy in Oldland Common have been praised by the Chief Constable for their compassion and courage after stepping up to comfort a distressed woman in Bristol. The young people were in the Old Market area of Bristol when they came across the woman, who was visibly upset. The four girls and three boys talked to the woman and tried to calm her and gave her cash to buy food before calling the police for help as they were concerned that she might harm herself. Olivia Rowley, Lauren Lerway, Baylea Camm, Rosie McGill and Seb Davis, who are Year 10 students at SBL, and Liam Davis and Will Coles, who are in Year 10 at IKB Academy, a partner school in the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, were invited to visit the Avon and Somerset police headquarters in Portishead and to meet the Chief Constable, Andy Marsh, who presented them with letters of thanks and arranged for them to have a tour of the HQ, including the communication centre that took their call for help. One of the officers called to the incident in June, PC Adam Finlayson, said: “Upon our arrival, they were comforting and supporting the distressed woman and seemed to have struck up a good rapport with her. They provided her reassurance and arguably prevented her from causing herself harm. I was massively impressed by their actions and attitude.”

Will Coles said the students felt honoured to have been given recognition by the Chief Constable. He said: “We were crossing the bridge and we saw her on the wrong side of the railings so we grabbed her. We called the police and waited with her until they arrived. We asked her if she had any money and she said ‘no’ so we gave her £10. “I felt so proud of myself for helping someone in need and hope she is feeling much better and is back on track with her life.” Rupert Maule, the principal of Sir Bernard Lovell Academy,

said: “I am very proud of our students’ actions and the calmness and maturity they showed in such a difficult circumstance. After recognising the nature of the situation, they did not walk on by but had the courage to act as well as the wisdom to call for support via the emergency services. “To act so responsibly under such pressure is a great testament to their character, values and resilience and gives a great example of how young people can be positive role models within their communities. It is wholly deserved that their actions

have been acknowledged by the constabulary.” Debbie Gibbs, the principal of IKB Academy, said: “We are so proud to have these two boys in Year 10 at IKB and look forward to sharing in their future successes. They have shown great maturity and deserve this public recognition of their compassion and courage.” Chief Constable Andy Marsh said: “I heard about what they had done and I was very impressed. I wanted to thank them personally. This was an act of great kindness, compassion and generosity, while others walked by.”

n YOUTH & EDUCATION

Digitech's £4m hi-tech hub is ready STUDENTS and staff at Digitech in Warmley are preparing to move into their £4 million new building. The studio school, for students aged 14 to 19, specialises in equipping young people with the skills and qualifications they will need to work in the creative and hi-tech industries. The purpose-built premises will provide up-to-the minute facilities to deliver the school's curriculum, which includes GCSEs and A-levels as well as professional and vocational qualifications. The building features science and technology laboratories, "break out" spaces, a cafe and theatre space as well as conventional classrooms, multimedia labs and computer suites. There is also a library and sixth form centre. State-of-the-art equipment on site includes 3D printers, a laser cutter and

PrintBots (3D printable robot kits). The innovative school, which can take up to 300 students, opened in September 2015 in part of the former Grange School. Demand for places has been high. The current Year 10 is full, but a few spaces remain for Year 12. The school has strong links with employers and students have regular weekly work experience placements. Business partners participate in project-based learning, giving students the chance to work on real-world assignments. They also deliver master classes, employability skills workshops, mock interviews, site visits and sponsorship. Its small size means it can help develop individual students through one-to-one coaching. Digitech is part of the Cabot Learning Federation which sponsors 14 primary and

secondary academies in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and Weston-super-Mare, educating about 8,000 students. CLF chief executive Steve Taylor said: “The high concentration of specialist technology firms in the area means the city has a strong track record of generating its own skilled and educated workforce. The scope for growth within the hi-tech and creative industries is huge and we need to ensure that Bristol is in a position to take advantage of this."

Principal Martina Veale said: “Digitech has made a strong start, and the commitment, determination and calibre of our students is building something special. This wonderful new building will provide us with a platform to build on that success.” There's a chance to see the new school, and find out about places for 2017, at an open evening on November 17 from 5-8pm. The school will also hold open mornings every Friday from November 11, from 9-11am.

Cheers! Apple Day goes down a treat THE humble apple was the star attraction at a special day at Grimsbury Farm. The Big Apple Day, organised by Friends of Grimsbury Farm, took advantage of the bumper crops many people had this year and encouraged them to bring their wares along to be pressed into fresh apple juice. For those visitors who preferred something a little stronger, cider making kits were on sale with plenty of time for the apples to ferment for Christmas. Children helped put the apples into different sized presses and played on a fun bus which was visiting the farm. They also looked at the animals including horses, cows, Jo Moule, David Hasler and Beverley Moon get to grips with a goats, chickens and Gloucester small apple press Old Spot pigs. The previous day the Friends had picked apples from Thornbury Orchard in Three-year-old Ffion, Charlotte, five, and Henry, eight, preparation for the mass juicing are pictured with John Chaddock and Tony Martin event. Friends' chairman Pete Davies said: "The sun came out and it was a gloriously sunny day. We picked apples the previous day but visitors also brought their own apples along and we pressed them as well. The day went brilliantly - it was very successful." *The next event organised by the Friends of Grimsbury Farm is Carols in the Barn on December 10 from 5-6pm. It features a traditional nativity, carols and play bus while the farm is magically lit up. Further details will be posted on the Friends' website www. I want democracy that works for all

R

Kingswood MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

October, 2016

EADERS may have noticed that if you drive down Hanham High Street, you'll see a new shop has opened. I've decided that, after six years on Kingswood High Street, that it was time for a change. When a vacant shop came up for rent in Hanham, it was too good an opportunity to miss. I'm delighted that my office has now moved in to 60 High Street. I'd like to thank all the traders and businesses on the High Street that have given me and my staff such a warm welcome. The location is fantastic, and being on central bus routes and accessible, I hope that local people will feel free to drop in if they have any queries, or need any help and advice. I hold weekly surgeries on a Friday usually in the office, though I also hold them around the constituency too. If you would like to book an appointment, my phone number is unchanged on 0117 908 1524 or email chris@chrisskidmore.com Since I last wrote, Parliament has returned back to work. Brexit is obviously the issue that dominates

most discussions in the press, but that shouldn't stop us from getting on with other important issues. In the first week back, I ended up at the dispatch box as a minister for the first time for my own ministerial questions, just before Prime Ministers Questions - fairly nerve-racking as I ended up with the Prime Minister sitting next to me listening to my answers! But I was able to announce that the government is going to look again at how victims of domestic violence who have fled to refuges should be allowed to register to vote anonymously. The issue came to my attention after a local Bristol woman, Mehala Osborne, began a campaign with Women's Aid to change the law. As the minister responsible for elections, ensuring that those who want to vote and are eligible to do so, but are prevented from doing so, will be a priority for me: I want a democracy that works for everyone. And as Kingswood's MP, that has some superb domestic violence charities such as Survive, that have done so much to highlight domestic

violence as a crime, I'm delighted if I can do anything to help. Other highlights over the past month has also been to open the new wing of Collingwood Residential Home in Longwell Green, which looks fantastic. It is a superb home, run by former local GP David Bailey and his wife Stephanie. Twenty years ago, my grandmother was a resident there, and its great to see the home still going strong, serving the local community. Looking forward this month, I'm holding my 15th Kingswood MP Jobs Fair at Kingswood Community Centre on Friday October 28, 10am12noon. There will be over twenty companies and stalls advertising hundreds of available vacancies. So if you are looking for work, or just want to see what opportunities there are, please do come along! Everyone there would be delighted to chat to you. Equally, if you're reading this and are a local company looking to recruit, please do let me know, we can always make sure your advert is placed up at the fair.

Young swimmers try Siobhan’s medal on for size as Olympian pays a visit Olympic medallist Siobhan-Marie O’Connor dropped into her old swimming club, bringing along a very special item. The 20-year-old visited Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club on September 26 to talk to its young members and let each of them wear the silver medal she won in Rio this summer in the women’s 200m individual medley. She spent two hours at

Keynsham Leisure Centre, signing autographs, having photos taken and chatting while coaching sessions took place in the same pool Siobhan began her training as a youngster. Everyone was surprised by the weight of Siobhan’s medal, said a member of the club, while Gold Squad member Hannah Galloway, 10, added: “She is very inspiring and her visit made me really happy.”

Carer stole clients' jewels A CARER who stole jewellery from her elderly clients and sold the items at pawn shops in the Kingswood area has been jailed for 18 months. Patsy Edwards, 46, of Ashcombe Crescent , Warmley, admitted three counts of theft at Bristol Crown Court. Edwards worked as a carer to mostly elderly clients and carried out duties including cleaning and washing. In December 2014, a Kingswood pawn shop owner contacted police to raise concerns over Edwards, in particular the amount of jewellery she was bringing in to sell. Detective Constable Alastair Binnie said: “Our investigation started with just a picture of a single item of jewellery – a sweetheart brooch. We identified the brooch’s owner who confirmed it had been stolen.

Patsy Edwards “We obtained copies of Edwards’s timesheets and spoke to all of her clients, many of which confirmed that items of their jewellery had gone missing. “We were able to identify specific items of missing

jewellery as being sold by Edwards to one of several pawn shops in the Kingswood area. “Edwards refused to admit any responsibility in interview and said the jewellery was given to her by her late father or had been bought at a car boot sale. However, the strength of the evidence against her led to her admitting offences. “To prey on and then profit from people you’re supposed to be caring for is despicable and heartless. “Some of the jewellery she stole from her clients held great sentimental value, including wedding and engagement rings. In one case she stole and sold a Masonic ring given to the victim by his late wife in the 1950s. “I’d like to thank all the victims for helping us bring Edwards to justice, as well as her employers and the pawn shops for helping with our inquiry.”

'Help us create Green Streets' ARE there any litter-strewn eyesores in Hanham and Longwell Green you would like to see cleaned up? Members of the South Gloucestershire Green Party are looking for sites to carry out litter picks to ensure the area is a better place to live and work. They recently ran their first 'Green Streets' community litter pick in Hanham Road, which is looking much tidier for it. Spokesman Dan Johnston said: "Despite the damp weather we managed to pick up several bags each of waste and recycling to make the road look nice and clean. "We got a great response from people out on the street and we want to continue to host monthly litter picks in the Hanham, Longwell Green and Kingswood

areas." The next litter pick takes place on Sunday October 23 from 10am-12noon, meeting outside the Bourne Christian Centre on Waters Road, Kingswood. People are welcome to pop along to give the team a hand. Picking equipment and refreshments will be provided. * Tell Hanham and Longwell Green Voice about the places you feel let the district down. n DRAMA

Blockbuster success for movie songs MEMBERS of a long-running local drama group are celebrating after receiving good reviews for their latest production – Animation Classics: A Journey Through Song. The show, which was a musical revue based on animation movie songs from 1989 through to 2015, was held in a concert-style format and was well attended on all three evenings. With songs from many classic films such as Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella through to recent films such as The Lorax and The Lego Movie there was something for everyone to enjoy. More than 25 cast and crew members took part in the production with the youngest aged 10 and the oldest over 80. They rehearsed from May until curtain up. Charlotte Lawrence, stage director of the group, said: “Although the production was extremely hard work, the result turned out better than I could ever have expected, with very encouraging comments from all. “The cast and crew were amazing and I can't thank them enough for their hard work and dedication. “Roll on the pantomime, for another spectacular production!" Animation Classics was performed at the Hanham Community Centre in September. The Hanham Players, who have been performing for 70 years, rehearse and perform at the Hanham Community Centre and put on three productions a year.

They also have a youth group section which puts on one production a year, as well as getting involved where required

in the adult section. The cast meets every Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7.30-8.pm until 9.30-10pm.

n LETTERS Don't forget Cadbury Heath Library HAVING read your large article on the campaign to save Hanham Library, I would like to remind people that there are other equally important libraries in the area. I live in Longwell Green and have used the lovely little library at Cadbury Heath for well over 20 years. This delightful library provides full services with helpful and friendly staff for whom nothing is too much trouble. There are lots of activities for children and adults. Reading at bed time and the reading challenge, which children always enjoy. They have a large chocolate factory at the moment made out of Easter egg boxes to represent Willy Wonkas Chocolate Factory. I myself help run a Saturday craft morning once a month which has grown in popularity. Unfortunately Cadbury Heath Library does not have the resources and support that Hanham has been able to generate, but all of us who use it would feel a great loss if it was to close down. Gloucestershire and proud of it! AM I a lone voice living in Hanham? Born and bred in South Gloucestershire, where Hanham, Longwell Green, and others are – and not in Bristol as the Rev Barry Bishop seems to think. Bristolians are lovely people and proud of who they are, and rightly so. So who are all those that take away mine (and others') rights to be acknowledged and proud of who we are? Eighty years of living in Hanham, South Gloucestershire. Perhaps Rev Barry Bishop should pop down to Portishead, Clevedon, and Weston-super-Mare and tell them they are Bristolians as well. BS postcode does not determine everyone is Bristolian. I love the city of Bristol and I love the city of Bath. People of Hanham etc should be very proud of who they are and, yes, we are blessed to be living here, especially with so much history. The village will always be my village; let it be yours as well. Jill Evans, Chapel Road, Hanham

Please keep up the good work JUST received the Issue 1 of Hanham&longwellgreenvoice. Wonderful, just what was needed locally. We used to get the Observer which is no longer delivered to the Meadows in Hanham. It is good to be able to keep up with local events and news. I hope you have the funding and energy to keep this local publication going for a long time.

n NEWS THE stereotypical image of homelessness is thankfully disappearing as people realise it's something that could happen to any of us at any time. Relationships break down, people lose jobs, council housing is in short supply - there is little stability in 21st century Britain. Those of us with children wonder how they will be able to afford to buy or rent property in the future. Never mind, they'll just have to stay with us. But what about those young people who don't have that luxury? What if a parent is abusive? They don't get on with a step family? They rent a flat but they've just lost their job? There are numerous scenarios which could lead to a young person living rough but what can we do to help? Emersons Green resident Susanne Frank is one of a growing number of volunteers opening up their homes to youngsters aged between 16 and 25 in need of somewhere to stay for one, two or three nights. Her job in publishing offers Susanne little opportunity to help others but through working with the charity Bristol Nightstop, she feels she is really "making a difference". Susanne, 50, found out about Nightstop, which is based at the Old Fire Station near the city centre, when she picked up the charity's flyer three years ago. Her son had recently left home and she realised that, yes, she did indeed have a spare room and could provide a safe place for a youngster to stay. Since then she has played host to more than 30 young people, offering more than 100 'bed nights'. "Young people usually find themselves homeless through family relationship breakdowns," Susanne explained.

27

Giving young people a bed - and a bit of hope and belief

Susanne Frank says she feels she is making a real difference by offering a warm room and food to young homeless people "They may have been thrown out by mum or dad or were living with a partner and that didn't work out. Sometimes there could be problems with a landlord. Some are working, some are at college and some are refugees who have a right to remain but can't find work to pay for accommodation until they learn the language here. The fact that there isn't enough council accommodation is hitting young people really hard. "It's really important that these young people are helped so they don't have to sleep rough or go to the adult night shelter which isn't the place you want to be if you're a young person. A place to stay just for a night or two can help them enormously." Funded by the Big Lottery, Bristol Nightstop has between 20 and 25 hosts on its books who are vetted and given training. But it's not a huge number given the

Fathi’s story I’VE been in England for seven months. I’m 24 years old and I don’t have anyone here that I know so that makes it very hard. All my friends and family in Sudan are dead. I love my country but I can’t go back. Learning English is the most important thing to me so I can talk to people, make friends and find work. I’ve tried to rent rooms but was told I’m too young. I can stay in the hostel but everyone is much older than me and I don’t feel safe; there are lots of problems there. Bristol Nightstop has helped me. I can stay with families for a few nights, the people care and I can clean my clothes, drink tea, eat and do the basic things I need to do. But I have slept on the street, and it really troubles me. Sometimes I hear things I don’t want to hear and they stay in my head for months after. Things like fighting, swearing, problems - they really affect me - I just want a place that’s peaceful.

size of the city and the escalating problem of homelessness. Susanne admits to being nervous when she received her first young person but not for the reasons you might assume. "I was nervous about whether they would be comfortable in my house and whether I would feed them the right food! It all turned out to be a lot easier and less frightening than I first thought. I wasn't so nervous about security issues but a lot of people are. They ask if hosts lock away valuables but I can assure everyone that's no issue at all because the young people behave like a guest in your house. They're usually quite timid and some won't even come out of the room.I usually offer one or two nights a week and some weeks I don't offer at all if I've got a lot on. That's what's great about Bristol Nightstop - you can decide how much of your time you give and you can withdraw at any point if something crops up. They won't refer anyone who they consider a risk and they never push - they are just grateful for whatever you offer." Susanne's 18-year-old daughter is still at home but this is far from a problem. "We both enjoy meeting new people because it's interesting and stimulating. For her, it's great to have another young person in the house. They have their own chat and banter that I'm not party to!" Young people are encouraged to talk about themselves to their host family.

"Sometimes the young people will open up and tell you quite a bit, more than they do to the key workers at Nightstop. If it's something dramatic like violence or misuse then we are encouraged to feed that back but so far that hasn't happened. It's more about lending an ear and being someone who hasn't got an agenda. Young people will have encountered people like parents, teachers, social workers, council workers who have an agenda but I'm impartial which hopefully gives them a bit of a break and they open up." Through meetings with key workers every few months, Susanne is able to find out how the young people she has helped are getting on. "It's lovely to hear that they've gone on to get a job and have found somewhere safe to stay. Sometimes there won't be a happy ending - they might disappear out of Bristol or continue to have to fend for themselves. You have to be realistic and just do what you can. You can feel so powerless when you hear the news and statistics about homelessness but by doing something practical to make a difference, even to just one person, you feel more empowered." Susanne gets great satisfaction from volunteering. "My day to day job doesn't involve helping people so that's something I enjoy doing in my private time. You see a change in a young person from when they arrive at your house to when they leave the next morning. Sometimes that change is so pronounced that they leave with a huge smile after a good night's sleep and a rest. I can also see a real difference in the young people I've hosted repeatedly. It's a good feeling to know you were there at a critical point in their life when it was really important for them to have a safe place to stay." Hanham Christmas Fair is set to be bigger and better ORGANISERS of the popular Hanham Christmas Fair have revealed this year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet. Earlier this year there were reports that the event was in jeopardy because of a shortage of volunteers, but after an appeal by Hanham Business and Community Partnership for help, the team has been overwhelmed with people offering their time. Organised by the Hanham Traders Association, the Christmas Fair attracts thousands of visitors each year and is always held on the first Friday in December – this year it is December 2. The 2016 event, which sees

the local shops staying open late and Hanham High Street closed to traffic, will offer many fairground rides and stalls offering traditional Christmas entertainment for families and young children. The ever popular Santa’s Grotto will be held as always at the Methodist Church and there will also be lots of new food and craft stalls, including tacos and pancakes. Richard McKenzie, one of the many organisers of the Christmas Fair, said: “We are all so excited about this year’s event – it really is going to be bigger and better than previous years. “We were a bit worried earlier in the year that we wouldn’t be

able to have enough volunteers to help but we have had a lot of support which we are really grateful for. “Every year we have such a great festive atmosphere; everyone looks forward to the fair, which is what we want. “This year we have far more new stalls and fairground rides for the whole family to enjoy so it should be great.” All local organisations, including schools, churches and community groups, are welcome to have a stall, which costs £15. If you would like to get involved in the event, please contact Richard McKenzie on 07841 330838 or email rich@ dangraceaerials.co.uk.

n BOOKS OF THE MONTH

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver AN American Baptist missionary heads off to convert the natives of the Belgian Congo with his wife and four daughters. None of them are prepared for what they will find there. But the bullying father will not even consider that his aims may be inappropriate, so the females of the family must each find their own way to survive. The story is told through their

eyes, as they take it in turns to narrate. The family's struggle with an unfamiliar, inhospitable environment generates amusing and tragic events. The background for most of the story is a period of major political upheaval and crisis in the Congo as it fights for independence and the impact of such a setting is different for each character, but

life-changing for all. I found this gripping, entertaining and informative but not everyone in the Reading Group enjoyed it. If you like your books threaded with actual history and don't mind the political sympathies of the author seeping through the narrative, then this could be for you. Review by Sheila.

How can I help my arthritic pet? Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Ciara Taylor

MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon

AS the colder weather sets in, it can often make your pet’s existing aches and pains more uncomfortable, or even highlight that your pet is suffering from arthritis. If your pet has been diagnosed with arthritis, there are many easy treatments available that can make your pet’s life more comfortable such as pain relief medication, joint supplements e.g. glucosamine, acupuncture, physiotherapy and heat therapy (or even buying a heated bed). There are other things you can also do to help with your pet’s arthritis during the chilly winter months: • Ensure they have soft, comfortable bedding away from draughts. • Protect your pet from cold and wet weather. • Help them to avoid slippery surfaces such as tiles and wooden floors. • It is generally best to exercise dogs ‘little and often’ rather than

one long walk • Try to limit the amount of jumping or climbing (e.g. up and down stairs or on to furniture). Arthritis is a degenerative condition affecting the joints and is very common in cats and dogs. In dogs it can display as lameness, stiffness and pain after resting. In cats, the symptoms can be more subtle, such as the reluctance to jump up, less grooming or sleeping more than usual. At our practice we have a popular scheme called the‘Arthritis Club’. Becoming a member can

help to provide your arthritic pet with the extra care they need, including discounted rates on pain relief and supplements, free weight checks, annual blood and urine tests and discounts on diagnostics like x-rays or CT Scans. We also have specialist orthopaedic surgeons and rehabilitation teams that are available if needed. If you suspect your pet may have arthritis or you would like to join our FREE Arthritis Club, call Longwell Green Veterinary Centre on 0117 932 3660 for more information.

Life begins at . . .

Charity looking for volunteers

Members pictured during a trip to Paignton earlier this year LIFE begins at retirement if the exploits of Longwell Green Probus Club are anything to go by. Members of the club for retired gentleman are packing in more trips than the Rooneys - and who can blame them? Having spent a long weekend in Paignton during January, members of the club took a week's holiday in Falmouth in April. Within 10 days, they were off to Amsterdam where they took in the bulb fields and general sights. After another break in Torquay in May, members took a breather before their next holiday in Llandudno, Wales.

The busy bees are now looking forward to a 'Tinsel and Turkey' break in November. Eric Smith, the club's tireless organiser, is already looking ahead to 2017 with trips to Paignton, Manchester, the Isle of Man and Penzance already under consideration as well as another potential trip abroad. The club, for retired and semi-retired men, is always looking for new members and holds regular meetings, lunches, skittles, bowls, quiz nights and much more. Wives and partners are included on holidays and events. To find out more please give club secretary Brian Deeley a call on 0117 960 4124.

Back to the 1940s at Avon Valley YOU could be forgiven for thinking that these two photographs were taken during war-time Britain. But the nostalgic images were snapped just a few weeks ago at a special 1940s weekend at Avon Valley Railway in Bitton. The station was transformed with flags and bunting and visitors encouraged to dress up in period costume or allied military dress and soak up the fun atmosphere. Joining in the fun was 'Sir Winston Churchill' who arrived and departed the railway each day in a military convoy and performed his famous wartime speeches. Adding a touch of necessary glamour was 40s singer Miss Jayne Darling who kept the 'troops' entertained throughout the weekend. The two-day extravaganza

also boasted a Victory tent with Punch and Judy shows, vintage bus rides, steam trains, a War Department shunting engine “Grumpy” used during the Normandy invasion, a demonstration freight train and a display of military and civilian vehicles. Ladies could get their hair done 1940s-style at a retro beauty salon and there was also a Fry's chocolate factory display showing how the tasty treat was produced during the war.

A CHARITY which last year supported more than 50 older people living in Hanham, Longwell Green and Kingswood is looking for volunteers. Age UK South Gloucestershire's information and advice benefits team carry out free benefits checks for people in later life. They also support people who want to claim benefits but are struggling with application forms. The team is made up of staff and three volunteers and last year their three benefits volunteers secured more than £660,000 of benefits for clients in South Gloucestershire. The charity is in need of more volunteers to help reach more older people who are in need. Just two hours a week could make a real difference. To find out more call 01454 411707 and select option 2 for volunteering. Alternatively email volunteering@ageuksouthglos. org.uk

Hanham WI WE’VE had a wonderful year so far and are really looking forward to our next few WI meetings – especially after September’s meeting when we were fortunate to be addressed by Anne Brage, a retired registrar. Anne had us all laughing with her hilarious account of her long career in the Registrar Service. This ranged from the bizarre names chosen by parents, through many humorous wedding anecdotes to some very moving death notifications. In November we are holding our Autumn Fayre at Hanham Community Centre. This will be held on Saturday November 19 from 10am-1pm. As a group we hold various social and fundraising events throughout the year which we all thoroughly enjoy. Hanham WI evening group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at Community centre from 7.30pm. n SPORT CYCLING fans got a glimpse of some of the sport's biggest names including Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish when the Tour of Britain passed through South Gloucestershire. Crowds were out in force in villages such as Oldland Common, Bitton and Kelston as some of the world's top riders whizzed by. They were taking part in Stage Five of the tour on September 8 on their way to the finish line in the historic city of Bath. Stage Five, which started in Aberdare in Wales, passed through Wickwar and Chipping Sodbury, before heading to Wapley, Westerleigh and Pucklechurch. Riders then cycled through Abson and Wick, along the A420 to Bridgeyate, along the A4175 Bath Road in North Common, along Oldland Common High Street and Barry Road to the junction with the A431, which they took through Bitton, Swineford and Kelston to Bath. Once they reached Bath, cyclists raced to the finish line in Royal Avenue where they were greeted by roaring crowds. Kiwi Jack Bauer was first across the line with a time of 4:45:25. The overall winner was Great

In a spin with Jamesboy records JAMIE Reid-Sinclair’s home-based Bristol business, Jamesboy Records, sells rare and collectible vinyl records. He has been trading since 2005. How did your business get started? “I kept thinking about how I might earn a living from something I was interested in. “All my life I’ve collected vinyl and been crazy about music, so it seemed to make sense to go into business buying and selling records.” How do you find stock and what kind of records are you looking for? “I advertise around Bristol in magazine’s like The Voice. I get calls from people with collections that range in size from half a dozen records to 4000 LPs! I am looking for collectible stuff from 50’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, The Beatles and 60’s groups through to classic 70s rock like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, indie groups like The Smiths, Oasis etc and other collectible genres like Reggae, Folk, Psychedelic and Punk Rock. The records

need to be in nice condition. Not necessarily mint but they need to be free of scratches and the sleeves need to be clean without writing or tears and major damage.” Do sellers have to come to you, or do you travel out to see them? “If someone contacts me with a collection that sounds promising then I always go out to their home to view it and will then make a cash offer if I am interested in buying. I have discovered that there is often an emotional attachment to vinyl, so some people find it hard to part with records even if they haven’t played them for 20 years! The way I see it is that I am giving the seller money and space in their house and then selling the records on to someone whose actually going to play them!” How do people get in touch with you? “It’s always a good idea to have a list of about 20 of the records handy before you phone me, as I

Jaxson - world golf champ at age of 6 He has his own website and YouTube channel so how does six-year-old golfing sensation Jaxson Perry stay so grounded? Jayne Taylor talks to dad Andrew to find out HE files into Mangotsfield Cof E Primary School just like any other pupil. His friends might think he's cool but to his teachers Jaxson Perry is like every other child at the school, for all are gifted in their own ways. But while Jaxson might not get preferential treatment, no one can deny his talents are extraordinary. From first swinging a golf club two years ago, Jaxson has just picked up the impressive title of world golf champion. He has just returned home from America after winning three trophies in four days. In fact he has won five trophies in the past three months. Jaxson, who lives in Siston, was crowned a world champion at the US Kids 2016 World Golf Finals, where he won both the under-8s pairs competition and the under-7s putting World Titles together with finishing 4th in the world in his 6 and under individual event from the 86 qualifiers. He also finished as the top placed European player at Pinehurst in North Carolina where players aged between six and 14 compete in their own age category from a staggering 84 countries. Since then Jaxson has been in the national and local newspapers as well as on TV. He's a mini celebrity - but is that a normal life for a small guy who doesn't turn seven until March? Jaxson's parents, Andrew and Edina, say the most important thing to them is that Jaxson enjoys himself. "To Jaxson, it's just about the love of the game," said Andrew, who takes his son to the Kendleshire Golf Club to hone his skills. "Being six, he's not thinking about being the world champion. He just wants to play well and get a cup! He's still got that cute six-year-old mentality and it will be wonderful if he holds on to

Jaxson with his recent clutch of golf trophies that. We'd like him to retain that throughout his golfing career so he can remain relaxed and just enjoy being out there on the golf course." Andrew, 45, puts Jaxson's talent down to good mimicry skills. "Jaxson's hero is Rory Mcllroy. He loves watching Rory's swing. Jaxson is quite a good mimic and is able to learn how to play a shot by watching Rory and other pros on TV or on YouTube." Andrew said Jaxson has taken all the media attention in his stride. "He's very easy going about it. He thought it was cool being on television and he has watched himself a few times on YouTube. He's far from big-headed about it though, in fact he's more likely to play it down. "As parents, you need to ensure that you instil confidence in a child so they can believe they can do well and win events but not by telling them they're better than anyone else. We want Jaxson to be humble and gracious in winning as well as in defeat. It's always Jaxson against the course not his opponents so the only pressure he has is the

If it’s News call07919 100565 or 07880 731148

pressure he chooses to put on himself because he wants to play well." Remarkably, Jaxson, who also loves to play football, tennis, swimming and pool, only picked up a club two years ago. "We were in holiday in Spain and we went to a driving range with my father who has played golf for many years. Jaxson wanted to have a go but instead of picking up the club and swinging it around, he copied exactly what his grandfather was doing." Jaxson really enjoyed playing the game so when the family returned home he attended group lessons at Bristol Golf Centre in Hambrook. "We did that for several months, then Jaxson just wanted to play all the time," Andrew said. "The bug bit him, definitely. In the space of two years he's gone from picking up a club as a four-year-old to winning multiple events." And what if Jaxson, who is fluent in his mother's native tongue, Hungarian, decides in years to come he doesn't want to play any more? "You can't force anyone to do what somebody else wants them to do. It's got to come from themselves. If he didn't want to play next week, then he'd stop playing. He would never be forced by us." The family don't make a big deal of Jaxson's success with his teachers at Mangotsfield CE Primary. Andrew said: "We don't tend to push it through the school and don't always notify them of

all the events Jaxson takes part in. The school's attitude is that he's just another school child and all children have talents. Luckily all the tournaments and competitions are on weekends or during school holidays as organisers understand that kids just can't be pulled out of school. That's great but it means all the prices for flights and accommodation go up." Which brings us on to another subject - cost. It's not cheap to attend tournaments across the world and Andrew is keen to ease the financial burden by finding support through donations via a bursary fund set up with Jaxson's club, the Kendleshire. There are guidelines on financial support set down by the R&A, golf's governing body, so any funding will need to go through the correct channels. "The whole reason I started moving forward with the social media side of things for Jaxson is in the hope we might get some financial support for him so we can continue to allow him to play in the competitions he'd like to play in. "2016 was a year that we managed to go to the Worlds but it has come at a huge cost to the family. His YouTube channel has had over 150,000 views and we hope that some company or individuals might be able to help support us. "You never know what's round the corner." • Anyone interested in supporting Jaxson can get in touch with Andrew via www.jaxsonperry. com

Aston Martin and Dick Lovett launches in Bristol ASTON Martin has opened its latest new dealership in the UK in Bristol, partnering for the first time with Dick Lovett. The purpose-built stateof-the-art facility at Cribbs Causeway features a 25-car luxurious showroom for new and pre-owned Aston Martin sports cars and a separate lounge where customers can tailor their new car to the exact specification. Speaking at a VIP customer reception held last month to launch the showroom, Aston Martin President and CEO Dr Andy Palmer said: “I am delighted to open this outstanding new facility here in Bristol, which sets the benchmark for all dealership showrooms worldwide. “Dick Lovett are why we chose to open in Bristol, partly because it’s a family and we like the spirit of welcoming that you get when you come here. It is a fantastic location and they were prepared to make something that is really special to represent the brand.” Lynn Campbell, Managing Director, Dick Lovett said: “It was great to see over 400 Aston Martin owners and enthusiasts this evening. The opening of our new state-of-the-art facility, in our 50th year, has made 2016 a fantastic year. The facility has been uniquely designed and reflects Aston Martin’s core design philosophy and craftsmanship.” On display at the opening event was the new DB11. The first product launched under the company’s ‘Second Century’ plan, the DB11 is the bold new figurehead of the illustrious ‘DB’ bloodline and an authentic, dynamic sporting GT in the finest Aston Martin tradition. Also included in the display was the new Vanquish Zagato, a DB4 Convertible, the Aston Martin Racing #99 V8 Vantage GTE plus a host of other Aston Martin special project vehicles. In addition to this were examples from the company’s current lineup, and a selection of heritage models, including the Aston Martin A3, the oldest surviving Aston Martin in the world. The showroom was packed with admirers of the luxury cars on the evening, including the first customer to purchase a car from the showroom, Patrick

Cullen from south Bristol, who has ordered a metallic silver DB11 v12. “I’ve wanted it for quite a long time and have been saving for most of my life. It’s in production at the moment and is due in November,” he said. Aston Martin cars have been compared to owning a luxury handbag - the Hermes Birkin of the car world. Dr Andy Palmer added: “Our customers fall into two categories. There are the car nuts who have always dreamt of owning an Aston Martin, may not be hugely wealthy, or may have come into the brand through the second hand car market. The Aston is their passion. If you go to racing at Le Mans you will find a whole bunch of people who are supporting the band and perhaps are James Bond fans too. “Then there are the high net worth individuals. There are about 16 million people around the world who have £1m of disposable cash and they are very discerning and look for the understated - that is where the Aston customer is drawn from.” The new South West and Wales showrooms are well placed for the production of the new DBX crossover SUV and the Lagonda which will be hand built at a new £200m factory in St Athan in South Wales. Dr Andy Palmer said: “We at Aston Martin are going through a revolution - we have the new factory, the new product range and the new DB. As a consequence of that the Zagato sold out even before we announced it. What we now have

is a destination that is worthy of the brand.” Aston Martin Bristol offer a convenient “Collection & Delivery” service using their covered vehicle transporter and a “Roaming Technician” service to assist with minor repairs and original diagnostic work.

The dealership has a dedicated aftersales team and a 10 bay workshop staffed by world-class Gaydon-trained technicians. For further information about Aston Martin Bristol, please visit: Aston Martin Bristol.
