Hanham Library battle goes on THE campaign to Save Hanham Library enters a new phase this month following South Gloucestershire Council's revelation of its latest plans to save half a million pounds a year by cutting staffed opening times. Several months after launchig a consultation on several options that would reduce library services at Hanham and across the area, the council announced a new option of opening the buildings seven days a week but cutting staff hours. In Hanham's case, the library would be staffed for 26 hours a week rather than 41.5, a reduction of 37 per cent. The new proposals will be discussed at a meeting in Thornbury on Wednesday September 7. If agreed, a second consultation will follow before the scheme is piloted. But the Hanham campaigners have vowed to fight on for their valued local service. Full story: Pages 10 and 11

dancing with the Pocket Rocket! IT’S that time of year - the kids have gone back to school and the nights are drawing in. Must be time for Strictly Come Dancing. This year’s series will be more eagerly watched than usual by people living in the area, for taking to the dance floor will be none other than Olympic gymnast and Longwell Green resident Claudia Fragapane. The 18-year-old was the eleventh celebrity contestant to be confirmed for the popular show and will join the likes of Lesley Joseph, Ed Balls and Louise Redknapp to battle it out for the coveted Glitterball Trophy. Claudia, who is the youngest contestant, said: “I am a really big fan of Strictly Come Dancing and am so excited to be chosen to take part this year. “I am used to performing in front of big crowds but this is going to be so different to my floor routines in gymnastics – but I love a challenge and

performing! I also love dressing up and wearing sparkly costumes!” The former pupil of the Meadows Primary School in Bitton and St Bernadette’s Catholic Secondary School in Whitchurch, is an all-around gymnast who excels on floor and

vault and is fresh from the Olympic Games in Rio where she competed as part of Team GB. Prior to her selection as part of the British squad in Rio, Claudia’s career highlights to date include making history in 2014 winning four gold

medals for Team England at the Commonwealth Games and in 2015 she won silver at the European Championships before taking bronze in a team event at the 2015 World Championships. At just 4ft 7ins, Claudia has been nicknamed the Pocket Rocket, however she doesn’t have the same confidence on the dance floor as on the vaults. “I don’t see myself in the final,” she said. “I just want to go there, enjoy it and challenge myself.” Claudia was due to find out which professional dancer she is paired with at the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing Launch Show which aired on September 3 a The teenager has already admitted she would like someone who matches her diminutive dimensions. “I don’t have a favourite, but just someone of a similar height so it is easier to dance with them.”

Watch out for Wiggo as he whizzes by! SPORTS fans in Hanham and Longwell Green are expected to turn up in force to cheer on their cycling heroes when the Tour of Britain hits South Gloucestershire next week. With Olympic champions Sir Bradley Wiggins and Owain Doull already confirmed, the Tour’s visit on Thursday September 8 looks set to be one of the biggest sporting events the area has ever seen. The Tour of Britain is the UK’s biggest professional cycle race and is the country’s largest free-to-watch sporting event. Some of the world’s best professional cyclists including Olympic Silver medallist and Britain’s record Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish plus top sprinter André Greipel and former UCI World Hour Record holder Rohan Dennis are confirmed to race this year. It was later confirmed that Britain’s most decorated Olympian, Sir Bradley Wiggins, will be riding as part of Team

Gloucestershire before finishing in the World Heritage city of Bath. People in Hanham and Longwell Green won’t have to travel too far for a glimpse of the cycling stars as they will be travelling through nearby North Common, Oldland Common and Bitton before heading to Bath. The stage will start from Aberdare in Wales at 11am. Around 120 of the world’s top professional riders will travel through South Gloucestershire before cycling into Bath via Newbridge Hill. Competitors are expected to arrive at the finish line in Bath around 3.30pm. The race will pass through Wickwar Road, between Wickwar and Chipping Sodbury, the High Street, Culverhill Road, Bowling Road and Dodington Road in Chipping Sodbury itself, before heading to Wapley and Westerleigh, down Westerleigh Road to Pucklechurch.

Victoria Park before heading left up Marlborough Lane and on to the finish line in Royal Avenue. Visitors and residents are being encouraged to go along to the Cycle Village on Royal Avenue, which will be open from 10am-4pm and will include giant screens showing the race live from 1pm. Anyone who misses the stage will have a second chance of seeing the event two days later on Saturday September 10, when Bristol will host the penultimate day of racing. The stage will include an individual time trial and a circuit race, both starting on Durdham Downs. Final times have yet to be announced, but the Bristol action is expected to get going at about 10am for the time trial and about 2.30pm for the circuit race.

Siobhan is such an inspiration to young swimmers YOUNG swimmers are “buzzing” over Olympic silver medallist Siobhan-Marie O’Connor’s success, say two of her childhood coaches. The 20-year-old from Bitton took second place in the women’s 200m individual medley in Rio last month, setting a new British record of two minutes 0.6 88 seconds in the process. While there were celebrations across the country at another medal to add to Team GB’s haul, the achievement was greeted with particular pride in her home village, which put out banners praising her achievement, and at Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club where Siobhan trained as a youngster and still takes part in annual galas and events when her schedule allows. And KASC coaches Thelia Beament and Lynne Bartlett, who each trained Siobhan in the pool at Keynsham Leisure Centre, say her achievement could inspire other local swimmers to follow in her wake. Lynne said: “I am sure that some of KASC’s top national swimmers now have their eyes focused even more intently on achieving that ultimate goal that Siobhan's example has shown is possible.” As well as future swimming stars, the club also helps a number of young triathletes and modern pentathletes to hone

their skills in the pool for future competitions. Lynne added: “Siobhan is a great example to our swimmers, she has remained a keen member of KASC and is happy, when her schedules allows, to swim for us, even taking part in our yearly club captain’s gala, swimming a few races for each team. She is not only a great swimmer but she is a ‘down to earth’ girl also. Her appearances at the club are a massive inspiration for our children.” The swimmer’s success could also bring hope to those suffering from chronic bowel disease, as she achieved her Olympic dream despite being diagnosed in 2012 with ulcerative colitis, which causes pain, extreme fatigue and weight loss and for which there is no cure. KASC is also hoping that Siobhan’s achievement will introduce more children to the sport and the club has had a number of requests for trials from young swimmers in the past few weeks.

Do you think they’ve SAVE Hanham Library campaigners have vowed to fight on as their campaign enters a new phase. South Gloucestershire Council last week revealed new proposals to keep library buildings across the district open to users via swipe cards while cutting staff hours. But the Hanham group members are unimpressed. They say the qualified librarians are a crucial part of the library and they also oppose plans to refuse entry to under-16s outside staffed hours. Abi Unwin, one of the leading campaigners, said people were angry and disappointed at the council's new scheme, which would reduce staffed opening hours at Hanham Library – the fourth most well-used of 13 libraries in the district - from 41.5 to 26. This represents a cut of 37 per cent.

Shocked “We are shocked by these plans,” she said. “They were not mentioned at all when the council put forward its options for consultation earlier this year. “One of the reasons the library is valued so much is because of its skilled staff. People don't like the idea of swiping a card to go into an empty library – it's dangerous.” Secondary school students who rely on the library as a place for researching, writing and printing homework would also be hit, as they would not be allowed swipe cards until they were 16, she added. The council is trying to cut the amount it spends on

Hundreds of these posters have gone up at shops and businesses in Hanham libraries. It put forward various suggestions earlier this year aimed at saving £650,000 a year by drastically cutting opening hours at all but a few libraries. Following a three-month consultation, which received nearly 4,000 responses including Hanham's petition, it has come up with a new scheme using technology known as Open Plus, which is aimed at saving £500,000 a year. It says this “new model of service delivery” has been devised to build on views put forward by users and is informed by similar schemes elsewhere in the country. It would mean libraries being open from 9am to 8pm, seven days a week, with only “core hours” staffed. Councillors are due to vote on the plan at a meeting at the Armstrong Hall in Thornbury on Wednesday September 7 at 2pm. If approved, a further consultation period will be

launched and the scheme will be piloted at Bradley Stoke Library before being introduced at other libraries, including Hanham. The Save Hanham Library group was due to hold a protest on Saturday September 3 and members are expected to turn out in force to the meeting, alongside protesters against cuts at other libraries and trade unions. Councillor Heather Goddard, chair of the Conservativecontrolled council's environment and community services committee, said: “This innovative new policy on libraries allows us to save half a million pounds a year on our operating costs whilst more than doubling the opening hours of libraries across South Gloucestershire. “We have had a lengthy consultation, and there will now be a second round to really make sure we have got this right. I encourage people to take part in the second consultation to have their voices heard. “Our aim is to create a library service that was sustainable, modern, which can adapt to the community’s needs, and I think these plans will go a long way to achieving that.” Labour's spokesman Councillor Ian Boulton said: “The previous plan would have seen most of South Gloucestershire’s libraries reduced to a shadow of themselves so I obviously welcome it being dropped. "We still have a lot of questions about this new ‘Open Plus’ proposal, especially in relation to staffing and security, and we will be pursuing those.”

got the message? 'The most welcoming and warm place...' ABI Urwin, who has used the library for years with her children, said: "We're so passionate about the library, it is used every single day and the community needs it. “I have never been involved in anything like this before but I feel so strongly about it. As a mother I have taken my two boys to the library since birth for Bounce and Rhyme sessions. So many people love that session and it helps new mums and mums in general meet other people. “I think to some they think it is just a library where you can borrow books but it isn’t. There is so much more to it.” Abi, who has spearheaded the campaign, added: “People who go there need it not only for books, internet access and information but also for a community hub, a place which is free and welcoming, somewhere where you are not a consumer but a citizen. “The reason Hanham Library is supported is not simply because there is a campaign behind it, it's because the staff there have made it the most welcoming and wonderful

Sale of Mount Hill Mission provides four charities with a cash lifeline

THE sale of a community church in Hanham has meant seven charities have each benefited from a £34,000 donation. One hundred years after it opened, the Mount Hill Mission Church in Granny’s Lane, Hanham, closed at the end of 2015 after its congregation continued to steadily decrease, but local and national charities have shared the proceeds after its sale this summer for £206,000. Jessie May, St Peter’s Hospice, The Salvation Army on Two Mile Hill, Macmillan Cancer Support, Cancer Research and the British Heart Institute all thanked trustees at the church for their generous donation. Jessie May, which provides care within the home for terminally ill children in Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Wiltshire, will use the donation to fund new

Mission Church, which came completely out of the blue for us. “The church has been a staple of the community in Hanham for decades and it will be sorely missed by many but this donation means the church will

continue to help the community for years to come. “We are going to use the donation to fund a new Jessie May nurse, Claire, for a year. Claire will have a caseload of children and families to care for in the local area and will provide medical, emotional and respite support to families who really need it. “We can’t thank Ted and Olive Denning, Sue Veale and the rest of the trustees enough.” Jessie May Trust, based at the Kingswod Foundation in Britannia Road, is a charity close to many local people’s hearts. It costs around £1,000,000 to provide this care yearly and, as the charity is almost entirely dependent on public support, donations like this are essential. Celebrations as bus company does U-turn BUS services linking Bitton and Oldland to Keynsham and beyond have been saved following public pressure. Hundreds of people attended a meeting to express their concerns about changes by bus operator First, which they said would it difficult for many to get to school or work and would leave some communities isolated. The new timetables, introduced from September 4, involve dropping the 17A service, which runs between Keynsham

and Southmead Hospital, and changing the 37 Bristol to Bath route so it runs through Saltford rather than on the A431. But following protests, including an online petition set up by resident Scott Salter and signed by 361 people, First has agreed to bring in a new hourly 19A service linking Saltford, Keynsham, Willsbridge and Oldland and to change the 37 back to its original route through Kelston and Bitton. Talks are continuing with South Gloucestershire Council

All change on the buses Until November 13 Service 19B - North Common to Keynsham, 10am to 2pm hourly, Monday to Friday

about financial support for the 19A, which is set to run hourly between Bath and Bristol Parkway. The revised services cannot begin until November 13, because First has to give notice to the Traffic Commissioner, so in the meantime, the company has introduced a temporary 19B service from North Common to Keynsham, operating from 10am to 2pm Mondays to Fridays. Bitton Councillor Erica Williams, chair of South Gloucestershire Public Transport Forum, welcomed the bus company's response. “I am so pleased that we will soon be concluding negotiations with First to restore bus services to the Oldland and Bitton areas. People living there would have been cut off if the 17A and 37 services had been axed with no replacement. This is why I

became a councillor, to work with local people to make our voices heard and to make a positive change.” James Freeman, managing director of First West of England, said bus service changes were needed to improve punctuality and reliability and to ensure financial sustainability and were made following consultation with passengers. He said: “Following a number of recent public meetings First Bristol and our partners in the council took another look at the planned changes, and we were able to identify ways to address some concerns raised. “We know how important it is to listen and consider people's opinions, which is why we engage with the public through a mixture of consultations, public and direct meetings and our own customer panel.”

From November 13 Service 19 - Bath to Cribbs Causeway via Kelston, Bitton, Oldland, Cadbury Heath, Kingswood, Staple Hill, Downend, UWE and Bristol Parkway. Operating every hour. Service 19A - Bath to Cribbs Causeway via Saltford, Keynsham, Willsbridge, Oldland, Cadbury Heath, Kingswood, Staple Hill, Downend, UWE and Bristol Parkway. Operating every hour. Service 37 - Bath to Bristol via Kelston, Bitton, Longwell Green, Hanham, St. George, Lawrence Hill. Operating every hour. Service 42 - Bristol City Centre to Bitton, Cherry Gardens via its current route. Operating every half an hour. Full details of these services are expected to be announced shortly. First brought in 'significant changes' from September 4, including a new service 16 from Bristol Parkway to Hanham (replacing the 81). Check timetables before you travel.

Superheroes and princesses aid hospital TWO Hanham pub workers have held a family fun day to support a cause which is close to their hearts. Anthony Nicholson and wife Gina held the event at the historic Blue Bowl to raise money to renovate the Rainbow Room at Bristol Children’s Hospital. The room is where family and friends can spend time with their loved ones if they die in hospital. Gina, who works as one of the pub’s team leaders alongside Anthony, the general manager, said: “We are raising money for a cause which is really important to us and we feel passionate about it. “One of my best friends lost their little boy last year and had to use the Rainbow Room at Bristol Children’s Hospital. I also went there to see him. It really isn’t a very comforting room despite being called the Rainbow Room. There’s nothing there at all and it’s very cold. You expect it to be almost like a child’s bedroom but it’s really not. It’s upsetting. It made us all think that it wasn’t right and it shouldn’t be like this.” The couple now plan to run further events at Halloween and Christmas for the same cause. They have linked up with other friends who are holding their own events. “All the money will go in together so hopefully we will get enough to completely renovate the room,” she said. Gina said she was delighted at the support shown by Hanham residents: “It was a brilliant day. We were really pleased with how many people came along to support us.” The Superheroes and Princesses fun day, on Bank Holiday Monday, raised £601 towards their target and saw mums, dads, grandparents and children turn up to enjoy the sunshine. Attractions included a fancy dress parade, face-painting, glitter tattoos, raffle and bouncy castle. Also proving popular was a visit by the Littlest Rescue who brought along rabbits and guinea pigs for a handling session.

Longwell Green Orchestra tunes up for its 95th anniversary celebrations LONGWELL Green Orchestra is celebrating its 95th anniversary by holding a Night of the Proms event in November in aid of two charities. The group, which meets every Thursday at 7.30pm at Longwell Green Community Centre, has been welcoming amateur musicians of all ages since 1921. With a membership of 45, the group holds concerts in aid of various local and national charities and last year raised a record sum of almost £4000. This year, to celebrate the orchestra’s anniversary, it is putting on the Night of the Proms at the Hexagon Theatre at King’s Oak Academy in Kingswood to help raise money the Julian Trust shelter in Bristol and in aid of Kidney Research. Violinist and group treasurer, Mike Openshaw, who has been with the group for two years,

said: “I have always had a love for classical music and after much deliberation I finally went along to a rehearsal with the Longwell Green Orchestra, which is my first with any amateur group for some forty years. “Within a matter of minutes I was introduced to the other

members, all of whom were friendly and interested in hearing about my playing experiences. “As with any amateur group there was a wide range of abilities but the members were also there because they were enjoying the experience

of making music with others in a friendly and congenial atmosphere. “The great thing about this group is that the repertoire is so wide-ranging that every musical taste is catered for. I had never before played in a programme comprising a Beethoven overture and a suite from Pirates of the Caribbean. My advice to anyone contemplating joining is do it now.” The orchestra is always on the lookout for new players, especially strings, percussionists and bassoonists. There will be an “open” rehearsal at the community centre on Thursday September 8 at 7.30 pm. Majestics are in a class of their own! A GYMNASTICS club has a lot to celebrate after three of their teams beat off stiff competition at the Team Gym British Championships and another gymnast was selected to represent Great Britain in Slovenia next month. All three teams from Majestic Gymnastics in Longwell Green had a fantastic outcome with the Junior Team, aged 13-15, now ranking fifth in the country and the Mini Team, aged seven to 11, coming fourth. The competition in Liverpool involved a 2.5 minute floor routine, tumbling and trampette. Meanwhile 17-year-old Tia Collins, who competes for the senior women’s team, will be travelling to Slovenia to represent Great Britain in the European team gym competition in October. Tia has been training at Majestic for 12 years and this is her first time competing for the country. The club, which has expanded twice since it opened,

are over the moon with their gymnasts’ latest results and hope to go from strength to strength. Gymnast coach and director of the club, Candice Fry, who has 17 years of experience in gymnastics, said: “We are so proud of everyone who took part at the championships. They all worked so hard and really deserved their places. “All of our teams had to be

AAT

invited to the event by achieving a specific score in another competition which all three of our teams did. “All our students work so hard and put in a lot of practice so they really deserve to get good scores.” She added: “We are also very excited for Tia. She works really hard and deserves her place in Slovenia. The whole club are right behind her.”

Majestic Gymnastics, which is situated in Aldermoor Way, has nearly 1,000 members of all ages taking part in gymnastics every week. Along with recreational gymnastics the club also holds holiday clubs, preschool classes and birthday parties. For more information on the club, visit www. majesticgymnastics.co.uk

Amazing achievement for Lauren,18, six years on from brain tumour op HANHAM teenager Lauren Pratt is teaching in China at the start of her gap year after gaining three A* grades in her A-levels. This is a remarkable achievement, given that six years ago she underwent surgery to remove a massive tumour on her brain. It was the size of an orange, and doctors told her parents that without an operation she would have only six weeks to live. Lauren, 18, had the op at Frenchay Hospital and eventually returned to lessons at John Cabot Academy in Kingswood, which is part of the Cabot Learning Federation (CLF). Now she has achieved the top grades in A-levels in business studies, media and English language at CLF Post 16 and is planning to continue her studies at university.

Having done better than she expected in the exams, Lauren is considering applying to Cambridge to read linguistics. ‘I wanted to make everyone proud. That was my motivation to do really well,” she said. Lauren set off for Beijing the day after she received her results. After five months there, she intends to go backpacking around Asia. Another CLF success this year was Katie George, who will read English at Oxford after achieving A and A* grades. Director of CLF Post 16 Kath Cooper said: “I am immensely proud of the way in which our students have applied themselves to their studies and developed as individuals during their time as Post 16 students.I feel confident they will go on to achieve well and be the well rounded citizens our community needs.”

‘They made me feel that someone believed in me’ A FEW years ago, Indianna Whittaker thought she would leave Hanham Woods Academy with hardly any qualifications. In Year 8 she developed anxiety issues and by the time she reached Year 10 her confidence was so low she couldn’t face going to lessons. “I would get stressed and just think ‘I’m not going to pass’,” said Indianna. “I thought I’d rather not put in the effort rather than try and fail. It was really hard for me because I’d get so stressed I would just cry all the time.” Thankfully for Indianna, her teachers weren’t prepared to write her off - they knew she was

capable of passing her exams. “I had the support I needed from the school; staff really did support me with everything,” said Indianna. “My head of year was the most supportive person ever. It made me feel that someone believed in me even though I couldn’t see myself how I could do it. “When I opened my envelope and saw I passed my maths and English and had five Cs and a B I was so happy. It means I can now go to City of Bristol College to study animal care. I would love to go on to do a degree in zoo keeping.”

Indianna Whittaker says she is very grateful to staff at Hanham Woods

Academy is ready for exciting future HANHAM Woods Academy is entering an extremely exciting period in its history. Having seen improving outcomes for its students over recent years, coupled with the long standing care and support it offers children and their families, the academy continues to grow in both size and reputation. Under the leadership of principal Steve Kneller and his new Leadership Team and with the support of Cabot Learning Federation an even brighter future is on the horizon. At Hanham Woods Academy students: ASPIRE to greatness; BELIEVE in themselves academically; INSPIRE others and are INSPIRED by others; ACHIEVE more than they ever thought possible. There is a renewed focus on academic excellence where students are both challenged and supported, improved guidance

around career choices to raise aspirations and prepare our young people for their future lives, a developing ethos built around a new ‘House’ system which fosters teamwork and leadership skills, greater resources to support our most vulnerable young people especially around issues relating to mental health, together with significant new investment in the school site courtesy of Cabot Learning Federation. In recent examination results, once again Hanham Woods Academy students performed very well. At GCSE level results in English and Computer Science showed an improvement on previous years and students also performed very well in vocational subjects such as BTEC Sport. Among individual students Rachel Williams will be celebrating her 2A*s, 5As and 3B grades. Abdullah Tabraiz gained 1A*, 7As and 1B grade

whilst Michael Coviello’s results included 1A* in maths together with 6 other A grades and 3 B grades. Many other students achieved significant successes and celebrated together with staff and fellow students today. All students will now continue to study at Post 16 level or as apprentices locally. New principal Mr Kneller said: “Students have been rewarded for all their hard work and dedication. To see so many happy smiling faces on results day made me feel quite emotional and to know we had provided an education whereby students had developed the knowledge, understanding and skills to access their next steps made me feel very proud! “To hear so many students thanking their teachers for all they had done for them was unexpected and showed a real sense of teamwork and togetherness you don’t see in many other academies.”

Post 16 students achieved some stunning results this year. Students achieved well in both in academic and vocational courses, with high numbers moving on to their preferred destinations, whether that was university, college or higher level apprenticeships in their chosen careers. Sam Noakes is off to his first choice university, Northumbria, to study Product Design and Ella Gibson will be training to be a teacher at UWE. Director of CLF Post 16, Kath Cooper, said: “While I’ve only been able to talk about a small number of our students and their successes, I am immensely proud of the way in which our students have applied themselves to their studies and developed as individuals during their time as Sixth Formers. I feel confident that they will go on to achieve well on the courses they are going to and will be the rounded citizens our community needs.”

No wonder these students look happy ... THERE were plenty of smiles when students at Hanham Woods Academy picked up their GCSE results. It had been an anxious time for many of the 16-yearolds, particularly those who needed certain grades to get into the further education establishment or post 16 centre of their choice. Among individual success stories was student Abdullah Tabriaz who achieved an impressive one A* and eight As. He said: “I’m over the moon! I will be going out for a meal with my family to celebrate.” Here’s what some of the others said:

I revised and worked hard but I didn’t expect to get what I did - two A*s, five As and two Bs. I’m shocked as I thought I would get all Bs. I’m going to study A’levels in chemistry, geography and art at St Brendan’s. Rachel Williams, from Hanham

I’m really happy with one A*, six As and four Bs. It’s nice to have the weight off my shoulders. I was struggling to relax waiting for my results I’m going to Post 16 at CLF to take physics, chemistry, maths and further maths. Michael Coviello, from Hanham

I got six Cs and one B and I’m really happy because I’ve got the grades I needed to get into Filton SGS to study sports journalism.

Matthew Daley, from Hanham

Principal is smiling too!

I worked really hard for the exams and it’s paid off. I’ve achieved three As, four Bs and three Cs. I will be going to St Brendan’s to study A-levels in maths, physics, biology and politics. Louise Hodges, from Hanham

“I’ve got one A*, four As and four Bs. I worked very hard for this. I thought I did well after I finished the exams well but more recently I started to doubt myself. I’m going to St Brendan’s to take A-levels in Spanish, English language, psychology and BTEC biology Bethany Drew, from Hanham

n MP COLUMN

It’s great that our area is on map!

Kingswood MP

S the local MP for this area, I was delighted to hear that Hanham and Longwell Green Voice was being launched. The Voice magazines have already been a great hit in areas such as Downend and Keynsham, so it’s fantastic that this monthly publication will be hitting the doormats of Hanham and Longwell Green residents, keeping you in touch with the latest local news and events. I'm also perhaps slightly biased, having been born and raised in Longwell Green - this area is my home, and I now just live round the corner in Willsbridge with my family, so anything that puts Hanham and Longwell Green on the map is a good thing by me! It's been six years now since I was first elected as your local Member of Parliament, but it seems that life is as busy as ever, if not more so. Things have obviously changed since I was first electedI'm now married to my wife Lydia and we have two children, Clemmie, who has just turned two, and Henry, who was born this March. Getting used to being a parent to '2 under 2' has been quite a challenge, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Its also opened my eyes to some of the great facilities

A

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

we have round here: Hanham Common has become a regular place to take the kids, as well as the fantastic swimming facilities at Aspects Leisure Centre or the soft play centre at 'Ugly Bugs'. Alongside becoming a father for the second time, 2016 has already brought other political challenges. In July, after Theresa May became Prime Minister, I was appointed as a Minister for the first time. I want to reassure people that although I have taken on extra ministerial responsibilities officially I am now the 'Minister for the Constitution', covering all aspects of elections, democracy and devolution - I am still determined as I have always been that I will work as hard as possible for my home area as your MP. There have been a significant number of local issues to Hanham and Longwell Green that I have been working as your MP to help with. As an author and historian, I value the knowledge and public benefit that our public libraries give to communities. I occasionally hold my MP surgeries in Hanham library, so I have been determined to give my backing to Hanham Library having no reduction in its opening hours. Earlier this year I sent a leaflet to every Hanham

property conducting a survey of local residents, and held a public meeting on the issue in Hanham Baptist Church. As a result, I have campaigned and lobbied the council to alter its plans. We are currently awaiting the results of their consultation. There have also been significant changes to our bus timetables by First Bus - many of which I haven't been happy about, and have expressed my views to Chief Executive James Freeman. For many constituents, bus services are a vital lifeline, and it is vital that they are maintained. Then there has been the issue of the council's plans for smaller black bins - I managed to secure a debate in Parliament on this issue in January, and I'm delighted that the council has now decided to ensure that every household will have the opportunity for unlimited recycling boxes- to be emptied weeklyas well as an additional nappy collection service for parents. I'm sure that there will be many other issues that residents like yourself will have: all I ask is please do let me know if I can help in any way as your local MP, I am keen to help where I can. I can always be contacted on 0117 908 1524 or emailed at chris@chrisskidmore.com

Whose bright idea was this? Run 5k and get covered in coloured paint RESIDENTS of Hanham and Longwell Green are being called to take part in a Colour Fun Run in October. Participants can look forward to getting covered head to toe in bursts of coloured powder at each kilometre of the 5k route at Oldbury Court Estate in Fishponds. People who would like to take part are encouraged to wear white T-shirts - which will end up with all the colours of the rainbow! Over 600 participants, including many from the local area, took to the course last year to be showered with brightly coloured paint. It’s promising to be one of the craziest and happiest events around and participants will make it over the finish line in an explosion of colours. The event is being organised by Julian House, which was set up to offer direct support to some of the most marginalised people in society – the homeless. Julian House has more than 20 different projects, accommodation sites and social enterprises in Bristol, Bath and Wiltshire, including a range of homeless services, support for

those suffering domestic violence and addiction recovery. It also helps individuals with learning difficulties to get work experience and training opportunities. Joanne Bamford, events fundraiser at Julian House said: “The fabulous thing about The Colour Fun Run is that anyone can take part; you don’t have to be a runner - you can jog, walk, hop or skip round the course if you like. “Lots of families took part last year and had tons of fun so we’ve also introduced a family ticket meaning you’ll save a bit of money too. “There will be face painting, music and food and drink on offer so you’re guaranteed a fun day out.” She added: “It’s a great fun event which also raises money for those facing homelessness who need our support. “We want to make the event even bigger and better this year and are expecting the event will be a sell out so are encouraging everyone to book early to avoid disappointment.” Tickets are now on sale, to sign up visit www. thecolourfunrun.co.uk

Thought for the month with

Revrd Barry Bishop

HEN I was asked would I say a few words for the Voice, my first thoughts were “will there be any red chairs, will I be seen and not heard?” and then I was asked to send a photo too. And that’s when I came back down to earth. It isn’t that kind of Voice. Thinking about Hanham and Longwell Green and its community though made me reflect on my time living amongst the people here. I have only been here a year, but I must say this is a lovely part of Bristol to live in. Many would like to have what we have. Being grateful isn’t always our first thought is it? We live in a busy city and the demands of life mean we depend a lot on the infrastructure of this place; the buses, the roads, the shops and the cafés. But when we come home after work it’s to a relatively pleasant, peaceful and safe

neighbourhood. So should we thank our local councillors, or our MP, or maybe those people who settled here when Hanham was little more than a village and coal was the main attraction? Long before all of this there was a plan for our neighbourhood, our country, this earth. The One who made all this wanted us to live in safety and enjoy the beauty of the earth. He is sometimes thought of as a ‘Voice’ because we cannot see him in the normal sense of that word. But I believe we can see and hear him through His creation and through his Son Jesus Christ. A well known hymn goes ‘All things bright and beautiful, the Lord God made them all.’ Enjoy your life and make the most of it in our corner of Bristol, but don’t forget to be grateful, remember it’s a gift. God Bless, Barry

n BOOKS OF THE MONTH

A Month in the Country by J L Carr

I

READ this short book on holiday, really loved it and recommended it to the Reading Group so was pleased when nearly everyone enjoyed the book. It seemed topical as it’s told from the viewpoint of Tom Birkin, a survivor of the First World War looking back, in later life, to an idyllic peaceful summer in 1920 spent in the small Yorkshire village of Oxgodby. He’s paid from a bequest to uncover a hidden mural in the church. He has little money, lives simply, sleeping out in the bell

tower, using a primus to cook breakfast. He’s befriended by another ex soldier, archaeologist Moon, also paid from the bequest to find a missing grave; he’s sleeping in a tent nearby. They’re both still suffering from the effects of the war and the time in the village helps to start to heal them. Birkin is made welcome as soon as he arrives at the station by the down-to-earth Ellerbeck family. They feed him every Sunday and as a result he feels it polite to attend chapel. He’s rather amused to be roped in to help out now and then.

Not bad considering he has no strong religious beliefs! He also provides a refuge for the vicar’s young wife from her uncomfortable cold barn of a home. She passes the time of day with him whilst he’s working on the painting he’s uncovering. He thinks her very beautiful. He’s impressed by the workmanship of the mural and intrigued by figures featured by the artist. The depiction of Hell recalls the war years. It is by turns funny, sad, touching and delightful. The

descriptive writing is wonderful. It won’t take you long to read - it’s only 99 pages but well worth the effort. It’s not difficult to understand why, when this was published in 1980, it was short listed for the Booker Prize and won the Guardian Fiction Prize in the same year. n VETS ADVICE

Why does my dog roll in fox poo? Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Ciara Gallagher

MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon

UNFORTUNATELY the desire to roll in animal muck, urine, rotting carcasses and other strong smelling disgusting things is a natural instinct that stems back to your dog’s ancestry. In the wild, dogs did this to mask their own scent so that they could creep up on their prey more easily. It’s also believed that some do it to protect their young. Although dogs no longer need to hunt, it’s still a basic instinct and stopping them is difficult. Some even do it after a bath because they naturally don’t like to smell clean! Be vigilant and have a really good recall. Call them immediately if they are sniffing at something and start to drop their shoulder as if to roll. If you are walking in an area where it is more likely to happen, keep them on a long lead, or walking close to you. To get rid of the nasty smell, some people swear by tomato ketchup rubbed into the coat and rinsed off. Apparently it neutralises the smell. However, this is not

something we’ve tried and we would recommend that you bath or shower your dog using a special dog shampoo. Animology produce a dog shampoo called Fox Poo which is formulated to remove the poo, deodorise and deep clean. There are also deodorising sprays for dogs – Pet Head sells a range. Do not use human shampoo

or washing up liquid, and don’t shampoo your dog too often, it could strip their coat of its natural oils. Your veterinary surgery will have a range of pet shampoos etc to choose from. If you would like some advice, don’t hesitate to contact us on 0117 932 3660 and ask to speak to a nurse.

n NEWS FUNDRAISERS Bob Barnes and Olly Slym are aiming to raise £100,000 in a year for four worthy causes. Their Impact Charity Challenge is looking to draw together 100 volunteers to take part in initiatives to raise funds for children’s charity Jessie May, Children’s Hospice South West, Great Western Air Ambulance and The Darren Wright Foundation. As well as taking part in key events including a quiz, a sponsored walk and Grand Ball, participants will raise additional money through hobbies, events and contacting local businesses. Bob and Olly began fundraising for local causes four years ago. Having set up the Impact Charity Rugby team and organised fundraisers resulting in over £50,000 for local causes, the friends decided to start a new challenge. One of the charities obenefit from the challenge is Jessie May, which cares for terminally ill children in Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. Helen Mackie, community

fundraiser for Jessie May, said: “The boys put so much passion, dedication and hard work into all of their charity work and it really shows with the well organised and successful schemes. I have no doubt that they will achieve

their target of £100,000, and the money Jessie May receives will be hugely appreciated by the families we care for. “ Olly said: “We are so thrilled to be fundraising for these four charities; this is our fifth

year now and we want to make Impact even bigger. This is a challenge but as a team the 100k target will be smashed out of the park. We just need to pull the team together - so if you are interested please get in touch.”

Sports Pound gets us back to exercise

GET Inspired! If the Olympics has got you thinking you should be getting off the couch and being active, help could be at hand. The Sports Pound initiative got under way in South Gloucestershire earlier this year to encourage people back to exercise. It works by giving people free vouchers to try sport and fitness activities. These can range from very gentle exercise to full-on bootcamp workouts – the choice is yours. Janice Suffolk, who is running the scheme in areas around Cadbury Heath, Kingswood and Staple Hill, said some people chose to use all their vouchers for regular attendance at one particular class while others tried out various activities. Sports Pound is open to anyone from the age of 14 who does less than 30 minutes of exercise a week. Parkour, badminton and cricket often appeal to youngsters while buggyfit is popular with mums of babies and toddlers. Many people relish the chance to get involved with a game of rounders in the park. The scheme has taken off, with a number of providers in Hanham and Longwell Green starting to take the vouchers for their classes. Among these are Hanham Cricket Club and Hanham and Downend TaeKwondo, as well as a wide range of activities seven days a week at SBL Sports Centre.

The vouchers can also be used for some sessions at all South Gloucestershire Council Active leisure centres, including Longwell Green and Kingswood. However, organisers are still keen to hear from people who can help shape the scheme for the future by letting them know what activities they would like provided and when and where would be most convenient. They also want to hear from more people who run fitness activities and are willing to become providers for Sports Pound. Karen Davis and Sam King, who run Zumba classes in Downend, are enthusiastic participants in the scheme. They said: “We fully support the Bristol SportsPound initiative and are pleased to be a provider. Not only can attending classes improve your fitness and lifestyle, it also gives you the opportunity to meet new people and have lots of fun. Our doors are always open and we extend a warm welcome to everybody.” Chair of South Gloucestershire Council Erica Williams said: “The SportsPound enables us to extend sports programmes right into the heart of our communities and will also continue our good work with local partners in reducing barriers to sports participation. This project will help raise the profile of sport and ensure residents are involved in developing activities.” Full details can be found

Oh yes they do (want you for panto)

A LONG-running local drama group is looking for fun-loving adults to appear in this year’s Christmas pantomime. The Hanham Players, who have been together for 70 years, already have a full child chorus for their production but are struggling to put together an adult chorus. Charlotte Lawrence, of the group, said: “We would love to get the numbers up for the production and as we have a full children’s chorus it would be a shame to not be able to get enough adults to make it a spectacular performance. “We need people aged 16 plus with any ability really, there is no need to have ‘trodden the boards’ before. “Everyone is made most welcome as we’re a friendly bunch with ages ranging, besides the kids, from late teens to late 80s depending on cast availabilities.” The Hanham Players, who rehearse and perform at the Hanham Community Centre, put on three productions a year and have a youth group section which puts on one production a year,

as well as getting involved where required to help out in the adult section. The cast meets every Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7.30-8pm until about 9.3010pm. For people who have an interest in being involved in the ‘behind the scenes’ crew there is a meet-up on a Wednesday evening.

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 908 2121 Or 07715 770448.

You have to pay to be a member of Hanham Players. The fee is £24 per year. If you are interested in joining the Hanham Players’ adult cast, then contact Charlotte by email on char36@hanhamplayers.org

Keeping it in the family THE Robbins family are thought to have made cricket history in the Bristol area after father Steve played alongside daughter Mollie and son Ross several times this season for Hanham. The trio have all teamed up for the club’s first XI and made important contributions. Seventeen-year-old Mollie, who also appears for Gloucestershire Women, has established herself as a key member of the side, often opening the bowling with older brother Ross and forming a dynamic partnership. Both have taken more than 20 wickets for the club this summer whilst Ross, a 20-yearold top-order batsman, has also weighed in with over 500 runs this summer with dad Steve (55) adding some 200 runs. It proved to be a mixed season for the Hanham club overall. The first XI, who play in Division Two of the

Bristol & District League, finished comfortably clear of the relegation zone while the seconds, who last year put together a magnificent run of 18 wins from 18 matches,

this summer finished third in Division Nine. Hanham also fielded a third and fourth XI in the lower reaches of the league, giving a taste of senior cricket for promising youngsters.

n MOTOR RACING with Andy Laurence MIST covered the paddock at Castle Combe Circuit for the final round of the Vincenzo & Son Bristol MX5 Challenge. Sandy Smith of Mangotsfield had won every round of the championship so far and had already sealed the championship win. Everyone else wanted to win the final round, but Sandy wanted a clean sweep. First practice went well with Sandy fastest by 0.7 seconds from last year’s champion, Dave Newman. Louis Ruff of Pucklechurch was in third place, just ahead of Phil Oliver and James Hurford of Downend. Dave, Louis and Phil were in a tight battle for second place in the championship. Dave had to win, whilst Louis and Phil just needed to beat each other. In second practice, Sandy went half a second quicker, whilst the others all improved marginally, except for Shaun West who jumped from 6th place into 2nd. After the lunch break, it was time for the competitive runs and Shaun continued his form, leading by 0.02 seconds from Dave with Louis, Phil and James all improving. Sandy’s time was noticeably slower after a spin at The Esses and he was last. It was all down to the last run of the day and Dave took the win and sealed second place in the championship. Sandy also broke the class record to finish just behind Dave. Louis sealed 3rd in the championship with a 3rd place finish and Phil didn’t quite have the pace to beat Shaun, finishing in 5th place and ending the championship in 4th place. James didn’t manage to improve on the final run and finished 6th. At the same event, Andy Laurence of Downend was competing in his Mygale EgoBoost in the unlimited class. The final run was ruined by a misfire in the engine costing over a second, but it was enough to seal victory in the class, set a new record and win the Best Bristol award on class index. A couple of weeks later, Sandy, Phil, James and Andy were on hand to provide passenger laps and instruction to drivers at the MyGarage Autotest held at the South Glos Show. Between them, they completed 1,000 laps of the grass track and provided rides for hundreds of happy people. If you like fast (or slow) cars and competition, then Bristol Motor Club is a group of like-minded people who organise events you might like. Search for them on Google, Facebook, Bing or Twitter and find yourself a fun hobby.
