Exam candidates in 2017 were the first to sit new, more demanding A-levels and tougher

Plan for homes in Why these mums run: Greenbank Road PLANS to build 77 homes off Greenbank Road in Hanham have now been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council. It follows a public consultation in July when residents were invited to look at the proposals and have their say before the plans were officially placed with the authority. The application - submitted by Square Bay and Bellway Homes seeks to develop the vacant site with 77 one, two and three-bedroom homes, 27 of which will be affordable, in line with council policy. Improvements will be made to the children’s play area to the south of the site. As part of the application, a highway improvement scheme for Greenbank Road is included, which will provide facilities for pedestrians as well as traffic management measures to remove bottlenecks and reduce vehicle speeds, both along the street itself and at the junction with Hollyguest Road. Following the feedback received, as well as discussions with council officers, amendments have been made to the proposals. Changes include enhanced planting and management buffers for boundary hedgerows, additional play and leisure equipment, altering the specific position of the housing plots within the site and the inclusion of speed reduction measures along Greenbank Road. The proposals had met with a mixed reaction from people living nearby. Many said Greenbank Road is not suitable for the extra traffic the scheme will generate. They also expressed concern about Hanham losing yet another open space and fears the homes would put pressure on local schools and doctor surgeries. But some said the plans were more sympathetic than they had expected and welcomed the chance for updated play facilities. A spokesman for Square Bay and Bellway Homes said: "We are extremely grateful for the comments received during the public consultation and have now proceeded to submit an application to South Gloucestershire Council for their consideration." People can view the updated proposals and comment on the council's website and using the reference number PK17/3702/F. The applicants also have a freephone line, 0800 298 7040.

A HANHAM mum who witnessed the "brutal" living conditions of Africans when she worked as a charity volunteer in Tanzania has never forgotten her experience. Now, 20 years on, Paula Woodman, has been inspired to run the Great Bristol Half Marathon this month in aid of a school in Malawi. Paula will be joined by pals Elly Randall, 40, also from Hanham, and Lauren Alexander, 39, of St George. "It was truly a life changing experience," Paula, 42, said. "I worked for four months as part of a community who were basically struggling to survive. I realised that when I arrived I had more in my backpack than they had ever seen before - a camera, a personal stereo and good shoes. "They all tried to look after each other and there was a very strong community spirit, but life was really hard. For example, there was a drought towards the end of my stay and the water pump we relied on dried up. The charity I was volunteering with said that I had to leave that community because the water situation was a health and safety risk. "Shortly afterwards I heard

that the water shortage had led local people to use unclean water which led to an outbreak of cholera and people had died. "To be honest I found it very difficult to adjust after the experience I'd had. And knowing that these brutal conditions still exist 20 years later is very sad." The experience of volunteering in rural Africa never left Paula, who has two children, Danny, aged eight and five-year-old May. As the 20th anniversary of her voluntary work approached, she came across a book called The Shed That Fed a Million Children. "My husband Tom knew I was thinking a lot about the time I spent in Africa, so when he stumbled across a non-fiction book in Hanham Library about Africa he decided to borrow it for me. "I had never heard of it before, and I never read nonfiction, so I wasn't very keen at first but the book is amazing!" The book tells the story of a young man from the back of beyond in Scotland and how he ends up at the centre of a global movement, called Mary's Meals, which seeks to end child hunger. Mary's Meals enables a million children to have a daily

the worthy cause that is Mary's Meals

Children in Malawi meal in a place of education. Paula, a social enterprise adviser, said: "It made me feel that we can all make such a massive difference. And what better way to mark the anniversary of when I worked in Africa than to join in?" Through Mary's Meals' website, Paula came across Chinambiya School in Malawi, a primary for 648 boys and girls

and knew she had to help. Paula said: "Mary's Meals hasn't had the funds to work there yet, and that means that these children are likely to suffer from extreme hunger. How can they have a chance of learning when they don't have even a basic diet? "I love that Mary's Meals is not just thinking of food but also about the long term impact of a basic education." Paula, Elly and Lauren have just weeks to go before the half marathon on September 17. The trio can often be seen running at the cycle path or along the river at Crews Hole Road.

"We've been training off and on for about 12 weeks," Paula said. " It's hard work fitting it in with busy lives. Summer has brought its own distractions with family holidays and the kids off school, but running is great for clearing your mind. And we've been encouraging each other through it." The plight of the African children has captured the hearts of businesses who are donating money. City centre-based business Graphcore led the way, while local firms The Italian Kitchen, Kenneth and Edwards Chartered Building Surveyors, IKON Construction and Bristol Chiropractic Clinic have also given very generously. The half marathon, in which they hope to raise £2,000 towards their £9,000 target, is the third event in aid of the school. Paula's husband Tom and his friend Ewan Combe

Paula Woodman started fundraising off with the Bristol 10k. Then a team of 14, including Paula, completed a 10k in London. "The Bristol Half Marathon is going to be the biggest challenge yet though!" said Paula. "Having a very specific target - to sponsor a school in one of the poorest countries in the world - has really struck a lot of people as a very worthy cause. "The support has been amazing, I'm so grateful. It will make the most enormous difference to the life chances of the kids in Malawi." n NEWS A FATHER from Cadbury Heath has launched an ambitious plan to raise £25,000 for charity despite undergoing treatment for cancer. Tom Bird, 31, was diagnosed with high grade Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in April and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment ever since. Despite his ordeal, he says he wants to "give something back" in recognition of the support he has been given by his family, friends, employer and hospital staff. Tom, who lives with wife Janie, daughter Sophia, three, and son Reuben, one, is planning three charity events in a bid to reach his target - a family fun day at Pomphrey Hill, a mass headshave at Cleve Rugby Club and an internet auction of shirts from all 92 football league clubs. Proceeds from the three events will be split between Macmillan and The Forever Friends Appeal, which is raising money for a new cancer centre at Bath RUH, where Tom is being treated. Tom is being helped by

‘Cancer won’t stop me raising £25,000 for charity’ his parents Alan and Sandra, from Downend, and his sister Johanna Noble, 33, who lives in Fishponds, who have been visiting local businesses to get their support for the fundraising campaign. Tom, a dispatcher for Avon and Somerset Police, discovered a lump under his right arm while he was showering. His GP thought it was just fatty tissue but decided to send him for a scan at Southmead Hospital just to double check. The scan was inconclusive so doctors gave Tom an MRI scan which revealed the lump could be cancerous. More tests were carried out and Tom was told the heartbreaking news that he had high grade Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph system around the blood.

"It was a massive shock," said Tom. "No one thinks it's going to happen to them, especially at my age as this type of disease mainly affects people over the age of 65." To date Tom has received six rounds of chemotherapy and will start 15 sessions of radiotherapy around mid September. At the end of September he will be given a scan which will tell him how well the treatment has worked. Tom, a Bristol Rovers supporter, heard about a campaign to build a cancer centre while he was undergoing chemotherapy treatment at Bath RUH and thought it might be something he could get involved in. Although he hasn't used the services offered by cancer charity Macmillan, he was impressed

with the work it does so decided he would try to raise as much as he could and split proceeds between the two charities. Tom said: "It was a bit of a distraction for me, really. I wanted to keep my mind active as well. I don't want to sit around feeling sorry for myself I want to do something I can get my teeth into.” Tom is optimistic about his future: "The lump was massive but now I can't feel anything there, and neither can doctors, but until I have the scan, I won't know for sure. "I'm a very optimistic person. When I found out I had a little cry and my daughter came up to me and said 'It's going to be all right, daddy'. I made a decision there and then that I wasn't going to cry in front of

the kids again - I was going to be strong for everyone. I've got such amazing family and friends and that's half the battle. They keep me positive." Tom's first fundraising event, the family fun day, takes place at Pomphrey Hill, Mangotsfield, on Saturday September 30 from 11am-5.30pm and Tom hopes to raise around £5,000. It will feature live entertainment with a magician and singers, barbecue, bouncy castle, tombola, raffle and hairbraiding. Tom said: “I wanted to organise a family fun day to say thanks to all the people who have supported me through this.” Tom will follow that with an attempt to break the world record for highest the number of simultaneous headshaves on November 18 at Cleve Rugby Club in Mangotsfield. The record is 329, set by a Canadian cancer charity, but Tom is aiming to get at least 350 people on board. The last event is the auction of football shirts. Tom has been in touch with the 92 Premiership and English

Football League Clubs to ask for signed shirts. “ I've already got well over 80 pledges of shirts from clubs so haven't got too many left. I'm now waiting for the transfer window to close so the shirts can be up to date. "I'm looking to get the shirts in by the end of September so I can auction them off at the start of October. I don't think it's ever been done before; the closest seems to be some police officers in Cambridge who managed to get 72 so it will be quite a challenge. "My aim is to raise a total of £25,000, which is quite a big whack. If we can get 350 people involved in the headshave and they each raise £100 each then we should be able to exceed the target. "Cancer is one of the biggest battles in life and if I can remain positive in the face of that, then there's nothing that's not achievable."

n NEWS A DAD is preparing to tackle the Great Bristol Half Marathon in memory of his son Oliver, a talented sportsman who died last year at the age of 18. Tom McGowan will join forces with daughter Heather for the 13.1-mile run to raise money for the charity Epilepsy Action. Oliver developed cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism after suffering from E. coli meningitis when he was a baby. But his disability did not stop him from living life to the full and achieving sporting success. Oliver played football for Cerebral Palsy England Development Squad and was the third fastest 200m runner in the UK in the Under 16s T37 Paralympic Team. He died last November at Southmead Hospital of complications after being admitted following an epileptic fit, just as he had taken up a place at the National Star College in Stroud.

student at Bristol University, are going to fulfil one of Oliver’s long held ambitions to run the Great Bristol Half Marathon on September 17. Tom and Heather are now in full training for the run and have included the weekly Pomphrey Hill Park Run as part of their preparation. The pair are being supported by staff at Longwell Green Active Leisure Centre where Oliver was a popular member and where Tom still regularly trains. Tom, an RAF squadron leader based at MoD Abbeywood, Bristol, said: “Oliver was an inspiration, full of love and adored by everyone who knew him. He suffered from E. coli meningitis as a baby which left him with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism, yet he never asked “why me?” "Despite the many challenges

he faced in his short life, he rose to each and every one with great enthusiasm and courage, filling every room with the sound of his laughter and love. “He had aspired to one day complete the Great Bristol Half Marathon himself. He will not get to do this so we are completing this for him. At the same time we’ll raise awareness of epilepsy and epilepsy healthcare services so that people with epilepsy have the support they need to manage their condition." Tom and Heather have already smashed their fundraising target of £1,000 and say anything else will be a bonus. Erica Cross, marketing manager at Circadian Trust, the charity that runs Longwell Green Active Leisure, said: “Oliver was well known to us and we actively supported his training. As his dad says, he really was inspirational and so we’re supporting Tom and Heather in their goal to fulfil Oliver’s ambition. "We’ll be cheering them on and look forward to them bringing back their medals to show us." Ten years of leisure centre LONGWELL Green Active Leisure Centre, which is undergoing a £1.5m makeover, has marked its tenth anniversary. The redevelopment, funded by South Gloucestershire Council, includes a new fitness studio, more gym stations, new changing rooms including disability changing, a new entrance to the building and reception area and more poolside showers. Among those joining in the celebrations are Active Leisure marketing manager Erica Cross and her daughter Edie, who has also celebrated her 10th birthday recently. Erica and Edie, from Longwell Green, were among the first to enjoy the centre after it opened and they are among staff and customers contributing to a memory wall . Erica said: “I can’t believe it has been ten years – the time has just flown by. I am pleased to say we enjoy the facilities just as much now as we did back then, although my daughter obviously doesn’t need her Mum with her in the pool any more!”

Help is at hand for people in pain BACK pain, as anyone who has ever suffered with it will know, can be completely debilitating. In fact, musculoskeletal problems, including back pain, neck and upper limb problems, affect eight out of ten people at some point during their lives and last year accounted for 22.4 per cent of the 137 million working days lost to sickness. Not only is back pain crippling - it's not great news for the British economy either. Making waves in easing pain relief, is a clinic in the heart of Hanham. Set conveniently in the High Street, Bristol Chiropractic Clinic prides itself on patient care - it's the driving force behind everything staff do. The clinic, which has a sister operation in Clifton, is run by Dr Bronwen Henley (MChiro, DC, LRCC Sports, FICS, BMAS, PGDipAcu) who divides her time between the two sites. A chance to share your memories A FASCINATING glimpse into the varied past of Staple Hill has opened at Kingswood Heritage Museum in Warmley. Many residents have shared artefacts and the museum team has delved into its own archives, including thousands of images belonging to the Gloucestershire Gazette series, to stage the major display. The exhibition is evolving as more people come along and offer items from their own family and work heritage collections. If you have memories or memorabilia that might be of interest, the museum would love to hear from you. For younger residents, and incomers, the exhibition gives an insight into industries for which the area was once famous: motorcycles, pinmaking, corsetry and footwear manufacture, to name but a few. September, 2017 A MUCH-LOVED nursery evicted from its Warmley home of 25 years has moved to a new base three miles away in Kingswood. The owners of Rocking Horse Nursery, which was housed in a building in the now-closed Grange School, are settling into their new home in the former Kingsway Centre, part of the Creative Youth Network estate. South Gloucestershire Council gave nursery owners, staff and the 60 families with children at the nursery just months to leave last summer. A parent-led campaign to save the nursery from closure, which included a 1,000-strong petition, council representations and letters of support, persuaded the council to allow the nursery to stay in the council-owned premises until July this year, enabling it to find a new home. Laura Williams, campaign lead and mum of one of the children at Rocking Horse Nursery, said: "Although it’s some distance from Warmley - which has been left without a nursery - it’s a lovely space and everyone’s settling in well.

Relief for families as nursery move goes ahead at last

"The care my son’s received at Rocking Horse Nursery has been second to none and I’m thrilled that other local parents will be able to benefit from this for years to come." The nursery’s new home has several large rooms for children of different ages, from babies and

toddlers to pre-school children as well as several outdoor play areas and a car park for drop-offs and pick-ups. Staff and parents as well as the landlords have spent weeks preparing the former youth centre for the arrival of more than 50 children and have been

busy re-painting, installing new child-friendly toilets and sinks, preparing new play areas and moving toys and furniture across from the old home. Most of the children from Rocking Horse Nursery in Warmley have moved to the new location and it has has space for new children to join. Families from Kingswood, Hanham and St George, as well as other areas of Bristol and South Gloucestershire, can find out more when the nursery hosts an open day on Saturday September 23 from 10am-2pm. Julia Davies, owner of Rocking Horse Nursery, said: "It’s been all hands on deck and we’re finally in and starting to get settled. We’ve been overwhelmed with the support from families past and present and local people in helping us to save Rocking Horse Day Nursery."

A HANHAM woman has spoken out about the hidden price tag of Parkinson’s after she had to reduce her hours at work and rely on her parents to pay for treatments. Lorraine Shearing, 53, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in her 40s, six years after first noticing a slight tremor in her right arm. Since 2000, she has worked part-time as an administrator in a doctor’s surgery, but had to drastically cut her hours as a result of her symptoms. Despite working hard all her life, Lorraine found out that there was no income supplement available from the government. She said: “Working is extremely important to me, and not just for its financial benefit. It gives me a sense of self-worth and purpose. Unfortunately in the last year I’ve had to half my working hours to just 10 hours a week because of Parkinson’s. “I just get so tired and can get very bad anxiety when I overwork myself or become too stressed. For years I tried to maintain my lifestyle – doing the housework, taking care of my family and working at the surgery – but it was too much and my health was deteriorating. My nurse told me I had to slow down and listen to my body." Lorraine has chosen to speak out after new research revealed that thousands of people affected by Parkinson’s are struggling with financial losses of more than £16,000 every year. The Cost of Parkinson’s report, published by Sheffield Hallam University and charity Parkinson’s UK, shows that a household where a person is living with the condition loses around £319 per week on

Lorraine reveals some of the hidden costs of Parkinson's Lorraine Shearing, who was diagnosed in her 40s

average, due to a combination of reduced income and increased costs. The findings reveal that half of those diagnosed with Parkinson’s, and one third of family members, have reduced their working hours, looked for more flexible roles or given up work entirely. About 127,000 people in the UK are living with Parkinson’s, an incurable, degenerative neurological condition which leaves people struggling to walk, talk and sleep. Lorraine said: “Thankfully, my employer is very supportive and now I only work two days a week, which I do enjoy, but I have noticed the impact on my bank balance every month. As well as losing money, I’m having to pay out more each

month too. I have to pay for all my medication and I also have regular complimentary therapies, like acupuncture, that really help ease my symptoms but are not on the NHS. “Luckily, I have a brilliant family that helps support me financially. As well as everyday help from my husband, my parents pay for my therapies otherwise I wouldn’t be able to afford them. My mother also helps me with some housework and ironing, which I’m incredibly grateful for because we would really struggle to employ a regular cleaner and I can’t manage it all anymore. “The most upsetting thing is that there doesn’t seem to be much support for people like me. I’ve worked hard all my life - and desperately want to continue

- but because of my symptoms I’m simply not able to anymore. Despite losing half my salary in a year, I don’t get any supplement or replacement income. I was advised to apply for Personal Independence Payments (PIP), but when I tried, I was told I wasn’t eligible. At the moment, we are making ends meet. But as my Parkinson’s progresses and I need to give up work completely, I am worried about what support I will be able to get.” Steve Ford, chief executive at Parkinson’s UK, described the report's findings as "shocking". “People are being penalised by heavily reduced incomes and forced to pay for a lifetime of mobility aids, home alterations and care costs - all while battling a debilitating progressive condition, for which there is no cure." The charity is calling on governments across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to make changes to welfare support and increase social care investment, as well as proposing new policies and practices for employers. "With a stretched NHS and social care services, and changes to welfare support, it is crucial that the government works with us, and people affected by Parkinson’s, to develop solutions and improve the public services we all rely on," Mr Ford said. n EDUCATION BROADLANDS Academy in Keynsham is celebrating some excellent GCSE results. In a year that has seen new exam courses for many GCSEs and the new grading system of 1 to 9, the Academy is delighted that a greater number of students than the national average have achieved the new 9 grade (above an A* standard) in English or Maths. Special congratulations go to Samuel Pollard who was one of only 2,000 students

Celebrations at Broadlands in England to achieve three 9s. He also got six A*s. Also well done to Katherine Edgar (6A*s and two 9s) and sister Kelsey and Kristina Lloyd, who notched up 18 As and A*s between them). All students who studied triple science achieved above a C grade, with over half achieving A*s/As. In English, more than

three-quarters of students gained at least the benchmark 4 pass. Principal James Hall said: “Congratulations to all the students and staff at Broadlands. I know everyone has worked extremely hard for these results; a real breadth of success, that builds upon our Ofsted Good grading.”

We can't believe it! say Hanham Woods students Multiple smily faces ...

Pals Abbie Crane and Beth Brittan are delighted with their results MANY students from Hanham Woods Academy are celebrating fantastic GCSE results and are looking forward to a bright future. A number have exceeded their own expectations and are all moving on to start A-levels, some with their sights set on university. Abbie Crane, from Hanham, was one of the first students to open her envelope. After overcoming her initial nerves, she perused her results and breathed a sigh of relief. "I'm really happy - I didn't expect that!" Abbie achieved 8s in maths and English, with 4 As, 2Bs and one C, which secures her a place at St Mary Redcliffe and Temple Sixth Form where she will study biology, chemistry, history and maths, paving the way for a future career in medicine. Louis Theobald, who also lives in Hanham, was equally surprised, achieving 9s in maths and English literature, a 7 in English language, 2 A*s, 3 As and 2 Bs "I'm in shock! I wasn't

expecting a 9 for English. It's such a relief now I know what my results are." He is moving on to St Brendan's Sixth Form College to study maths, psychology and chemistry. "I'd like to go on to university but at the moment have no idea what I want to study or do as a career." Harry Farrell will also go to St Brendan's after his results - a 9 in maths, 8 in English literature, 7 in English language, 2 A*s, 3 As and 2 Bs. The first thing Harry did after opening his envelope was to ring his mum, who was delighted. "I'm surprised at getting a 9 in maths because only the top five per cent of students in the country get a 9! It's really given me confidence as I was very nervous about my results before today. I'm going to go out for a meal with my family to celebrate." Oscar Bartlett, from St George, also has cause for celebration after achieving an 8 in maths, 6 in English literature, 5 in English language, 1 A*, 5 As

IN typical teenage style, Ryan Everett communicated his grades to his family by texting them a photo of his GCSE results sheet. He must have done something right because the reply that immediately pinged back to him featured three overjoyed emojis. And who wouldn't be overjoyed with a son achieving a grade 9 in maths, 8 in English language, 7 in English literature, 3 A*s, 3 As and a C? Ryan, from Kingswood, said: "I was expecting good results in the sciences but didn't expect to get those results in English so I was pleasantly surprised. "I'm going to study A-levels at St Brendan's, computer science, maths, further maths and physics. I'd like to go on and a B. "I passed Spanish! I wasn't expecting that! I'm really pleased with an 8 in maths. I can now go to St Mary Redcliffe to take maths, further maths, chemistry and history. "I don't know what I want to do as a career but I would like to study maths at university." Equally delighted is Hanham's Beth Brittan who achieved an 8 in maths and English literature, 7 in English language, 1 A*, 3 As, 1 B and 2 Cs. She will now go on to take A-levels in politics, economics, history and biology at St Brendan's. "I'm really pleased. I wasn't expecting such good grades in

"I might hit a Wetherspoons with my family," he laughed. English as I was getting 4s in my mocks. I want to take a law degree and specialise in contract law. I'd really like to be a lawyer." Oliver Packer (not pictured) is heading to Redcliffe Sixth Form after his straight 8s in maths and both English subjects, 5 A*s and 2 As. He will study English language, Spanish, maths and philosophy. He said: "I thought I'd do well in Spanish and history but I was expecting a few Bs in the other subjects. I'm overjoyed!" Oliver, who is teaching himself Japanese, is hoping to go on to university to study philosophy and linguistics but is unsure of a career path at the moment as his interests and hobbies "change all the time".

IKB Academy thrilled with first exam results IKB Academy in Keynsham is celebrating a hugely successful first set of A-level and GCSE results. The school, which opened two years ago, is delighted that students have achieved highly in both the academic and vocational qualifications across the full range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subject areas. IKB students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in all the A-level science subjects and a 100 per cent pass rate in the Level 3 Btec Engineering qualification, where almost 50% of students gained a double Distinction * (equivalent to two A* grades at A level). Seventy nine per cent of students gained at least one top grade (A* or A or equivalent). The pass rate for GCSEs and Btecs was 100 per cent. This is particularly impressive in the sciences as all IKB students study separate Biology,

IKB principal Debbie Gibbs with Imogen McDermott, who is off to Liverpool University to read Mechanical Engineering Chemistry and Physics GCSEs. All students gained at least one grade at a B or above in their GCSEs and Btecs and 67 per cent of students achieved at least one A grade or above. Special mention goes to Tom Jackson, who achieved a

Grade 9 in Maths, 2 A*s, 1A and 5B grades; Azam Javid, who achieved 2 A*s, 2 As and 4Bs; Owen McDermott, who achieved 1A*, 5As and 3 Bs and Sam Joy, who achieved 4 As and 4 Bs. Principal Debbie Gibbs said: “These results firmly place

IKB on the map as a learning institution where excellence in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths can be achieved. “Most importantly these results give our students the opportunity to follow their dreams to study at university and on high quality apprenticeships. We have students leaving to study in the fields of aeronautical, motorsport, and design engineering as well as the more traditional subjects such as mechanical engineering and economics. “This has been our first group of students and we will miss them, but know that the results they have gained at IKB along with their work placement experiences have secured them fantastic university places, apprenticeships and jobs and will equip them well for the next stage of their lives. We wish them all the very best of luck.” There are still places available in the sixth form at IKB.

Students 'have risen to challenge brilliantly' SCHOOL and college leaders and local politicans have praised the class of 2017 for their success in the new A-levels. AS-levels no longer count towards marks and students are assessed on the results of exams at the end of two years. Michael Jaffrain, principal of St Brendan’s Sixth Form College, the biggest provider in the area, said: “I am thrilled with how our teachers and students have handled the dramatic change to the more rigorous linear style. Our results are outstanding and highlight the brilliant quality in teaching at St Brendan’s.” The CLF Post 16 – the joint Sixth Form for academies in the Cabot Learning Federation – achieved record results, with 22 per cent of Principal Kath Coope said: “I am overjoyed to be able to share such stunning results with a fantastic cohort of students. “The improvements made over the last two years place us as a vibrant and successful Post 16 that is fully inclusive. “The support that students receive is first class; both academically and pastorally, and today is a very proud recognition of the success that Post 16 has become.” Wellsway School also saw some excellent

results, with all students who applied for university places being accepted. Principal Matthew Woodville said: "We are delighted with the achievements of our sixth-form students. These results mean that this talented group of young people will go on to pursue their ambitions in the work place, at universities and colleges, or in

apprenticeships and other training courses. We wish them every success for the future.” Councillor Toby Savage, South Gloucestershire’s cabinet member for schools, skills and employment, said: “Judging by the feedback received from schools and academies so far, it would suggest that students in South Gloucestershire continue to do well at A-level. “I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone well as they make those allimportant choices for the future. Whether they’re heading off to university, starting a vocational qualification or taking up a new job or apprenticeship, we need resilient young people with a range of talents and a positive attitude to join the variety of employment sectors we have across South Gloucestershire.” Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Studying for A-levels is no easy task so I’d like to congratulate all the young people receiving their results today and wish them the very best in whatever they do next. If you haven’t done as well as you hoped today, it doesn’t mean you won’t succeed in the future.”

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM (EVENING) WI AUGUST saw the usual monthly meeting replaced by a trip 'abroad' - a coach trip across the water to Wales!! We travelled to Cardiff Bay to start the day with a visit to the Welsh National Assembly. This beautiful building was opened by the Queen on 1st March 2006 and occupies a prime position on the waterfront in the bay. In true WI fashion, we started our visit with coffee before going on to an excellent guided tour with guide Gareth (of course)! He gave us a most entertaining insight into the history and workings of the assembly. As an added bonus, we were fortunate that our visit coincided with a display of the iconic poppy sculpture Weeping Window by artist Paul Cummins and designer Tom Piper commemorating the first world war. These were some of the poppies first seen at the Tower of London in 2014. Next on the agenda was

lunch for which we were spoilt for choice with the large number of eating spots available around the bay area. Following this break, we met up for a boat trip around the bay. The weather was kind to us and we enjoyed views of the sea birds, the new developments around the bay and the barrage itself. After the boat trip there was just enough time to enjoy a cup of tea or ice cream before our return journey home across the bridge. Dianna Coles

HANHAM (AFTERNOON) WI OUR August meeting was substituted with a visit to Denman in Oxfordshire. The day was excellent and on arrival at Denman we were served with coffee and

homemade biscuits (you would not expect anything else from the WI). Refreshed after our journey, we were treated to a cookery demonstration in the Home Economics Centre, with each member provided with the recipe to try at home! Denman House and grounds was bought by the WI in 1948 and is used for a range of residential and short term courses for members and nonmembers alike in a supportive, comfortable and inspiring setting. After a delightful lunch we were offered a tour of the

We were also given the opportunity to stroll through the grounds and take a picture of some of our group before we were served afternoon cream teas where we met up with another WI party from Yorkshire which gave us the opportunity to share our experiences. Shortly afterwards, we said our thanks to our hosts and goodbyes to our new friends before starting our journey home. n NEWS BRISTOL Technology and Engineering Academy saw some notable successes at A-level in 2017. The school in Stoke Gifford is one of the UK’s University Technical Colleges (UTCs), which focus on the so-called STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Over half – 52 per cent - of all A-level grades at BTE Academy in maths/further maths were at A* or A while 76 per cent of grades in maths and science were A*-C, with a 100 per cent pass rate. Meanwhile 76 per cent of engineering grades were at Distinction* or Distinction, with 14 students achieving maximum marks across all units. Individual successes included Harry Dyte, from Kingswood - A* Biology, A Physics, A Chemistry, A Maths, Distinction* Environmental Sustainability. Harry will study natural sciences at the University of Exeter. “BTE is STEM-focused so it has been ideal for me in terms of specialising in the subjects which I enjoy and am good at,” he said.

Delight at BTE Academy over A-level successes

Tristan Russell, of Longwell Green, is off to the University of Bath to study Maths and Physics after achieving A* Maths, A* Physics, A Further Maths. He said: “I am hoping to do a placement in my third year and eventually maybe do research of

some kind,” he said. “Coming to BTE Academy has been brilliant for me. When I came here I never expected that I could achieve A*s at A -level and my grades have really improved across the board. The teachers are brilliant and ensure that everyone enjoys

lessons, and all the science equipment is state of the art.” Meanwhile many of BTE Academy’s Year 13 cohort are taking the apprenticeship route. Cameron McNeill, from Longwell Green, and Matthew Owen, of Bishopsworth, are both taking up four-year apprenticeships at Renishaw while Callum Isaacs, from Kingswood, joins Universal Balancing in Kingswood. Principal Rhian Priest, said: “I am incredibly proud of ourYear 13 students, many of whom are among our first fouryear cohort. "There are some wonderful individual successes which are richly deserved. Every single university applicant has gained their first choice place with a significant number taking up their first choice apprenticeship.”

n GARDENING OUR 22nd Annual Show held at St. Aidan’s Allotments in St. George last month was a great success. As always, the determination of our team to bring a show full of interest for all ages was obvious. The weather on the day was perfect and to say the quality of exhibits from vegetables, flowers to handicrafts were fabulous is an understatement, stunning may be more appropriate! For example, one of our new plot holders Dan Wheeler walked away with a trophy for a superb collection of vegetables, daughter Rosie is seen here holding his cup. Not a bad achievement for someone who had not grown anything before. Well done Dan, you’ve certainly set the bar for others to beat next year. Whilst our visitors were viewing the exhibits inside, those outside had plenty of stalls to keep them occupied with an excellent face painter for the children and a great selection of indoor and perennial plants for others. It was also an opportunity for plot holders to view new a newly selected range of garden sundries; many of which are not readily available at other outlets. For example, this included raised bed kits, various seed trays, and Crop Cosy Horticultural Net. This durable net not only protects plants against wind, rain and predators but creates a thermal environment over plants and seedlings. Call in to our Allotment Shop for more information or contact us from our details at the end of this report if you would like to receive a list of products we had on sale and we’ll be pleased to send you one.

hanham&longwellgreenvoice

Our visit to The RHS Malvern Show earlier this year was enjoyed by all and we have been asked to repeat it again. On Saturday 23rd September our coach will be departing locally, travelling directly to Malvern and we would like to invite you to join us. It’s a good opportunity to listen to talks by top celebrities Carol Klein and Alys Fowler in the Malvern Pavilion along with Jonathan Moseley from the BBC’s The Big Allotment Challenge. Don’t miss this opportunity; Jonathan is renowned for bringing floral theatre to a whole new level. You'll find him in the Floral Fiesta and we’re sure you’ll not be disappointed. If we’ve managed to whet your appetite, please call our Secretary to check ticket availability, 0117-9603253. As autumn gets increasingly nearer it’s worth taking stock of any Runner or French beans that you may have been growing this year. Once the best of your harvest is over and temperatures take a dip these plants will rapidly go into decline. But before you decide to consign them to the compost heap, leave a few plants remaining if you can until the pods shrivel and dry, then cut them and take out the seeds. Store the seed in paper bags; add a note of what they are and keep them in a frost-free place until next spring and you’ll save yourself the need to buy more in the New Year. Earlier in this report we mentioned raised beds that we recently had for sale, these are highly successful and can be adopted for use in many situations. And from feedback we hear from visitors to our shop is that they would love to grow their own, but many say that they do not have space at home or time for gardening. A small raised bed could just be the answer to that problem. Known as square foot gardening, it is

September, 2017

just that! For example, a bed which measures just 3ft x 3ft x 6ins high and divided into 12 inch squares can produce masses of salad crops and many veg simply by continual sowing and cropping from just a few packets of seed at minimal cost. Comparing that to prepared and packed items from a supermarket the savings will be enormous, and the time it takes each week to maintain the bed can be measured in minutes. Adding that food miles don’t exist with these crops, more like yards it would be impossible to eat any fresher. If you would like to find out more, send us an email and we’ll be pleased to provide you with further ideas of how to get started. n VETS' ADVICE

Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, 1 Court Farm Road, Longwell Green BS30 9AA Tel 0117 932 3660

Dr Nick Walton MRCVS Highcroft Veterinary Group

Should I take out pet insurance? PET insurance is a safety net to help pay for the unexpected. As humans we have the NHS, but there is no NHS for pets and, like us, they can fall ill or have an accident at any time. Fortunately, modern veterinary advances allow us to offer highly sophisticated treatments and procedures for pets – we routinely perform heart surgery, use MRI and CT scanning and treat cancer. We even perform hip replacements in dogs! However, whilst this is reassuring for pet owners, it’s no surprise that it can be very expensive. One way to decide whether you need pet insurance is to imagine that your pet is injured, or seriously ill, and consider how you might pay for the treatment.

One of the most distressing situations is when a pet’s problem is treatable, but cost of the treatment is more than the owner can afford, and the pet has to be put to sleep. Sadly, we see this often with cats that have been in road traffic accidents resulting in feline pelvic fractures, and veterinary fees in excess of £4,000.

History Almost any pet can be insured, however the cost of your pet insurance will depend upon factors such as age, medical history, breed (some breeds are predisposed to certain conditions), and even the area you live in. Choosing an insurance policy can be a confusing process, and your vet will be happy to advise

you on what to look out for. For example, does the policy offer lifelong cover for illness? Some insurance companies will only offer cover for 12 months which means that an illness is only covered during that policy year. This can be very frustrating with on-going illnesses such as skin conditions, diabetes, kidney disease and heart disease. Also, check the policy limit (ie. how much the policy will pay out in one year). We would generally recommend yearly cover of at least £7,000 just in case your pet has a serious accident and/or illness. Feel free to call us at Longwell Green Veterinary Centre, on 0117 932 3660, if you would like more information on taking out pet insurance.

Proud day at the Palace as Megan strikes gold IT was a proud moment for Megan Densley when she collected her gold Duke of Edinburgh Award at Buckingham Palace this summer. The Colston’s Girls’ School student’s achievement was a result of navigating 100 kilometres of Dartmoor’s vast, open landscapes. She was presented with the award by TV chef and new Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith. The Duke of Edinburgh and the Earl and Countess of Wessex also attended.Megan, 18, from Kingswood, completed the award last year while she was in Year 12 at CGS Sixth Form. She finished the challenge along with friends Veronica Girgis, Victoria Heath and Emma Hilton. They spent a gruelling four days on the expedition, covering 25 kilometres of moorland a day.

“It was a really hard four days and was very strange not seeing any houses or streets, just lots of fields and trees,” Megan said. “We got lost a few times, but by the final day we knew where we were going. “We weren’t allowed mobile phones either, and we were away while Brexit happened – we didn’t know anything until we’d finished. It really took us away from human life.” Megan’s DfE journey began in Year 10 when she achieved her bronze award. She then completed her silver award in Year 11. Megan said achieving the gold award would not have been possible without the support of her dad, Kevin. “If it wasn’t for my dad, I probably wouldn’t have completed silver and gold – he

has really helped and encouraged me over the years. ” Megan, who is a sergeant in the 2002 Kingswood RAF Air Cadets squadron, wore her cadet uniform to the collect her award. She said: “It was a really nice and relaxed afternoon” Now that Megan has completed her final award, she hopes to take the qualification to become a DfE leader where she will be able to take out groups on day walks. “I would really encourage other young people to complete

Duke of Edinburgh. It looks so good on the CV and is a good talking point when going for interviews – I encourage everyone to take part.” This month, Megan starts her apprenticeship in the finance department at the Ministry of Defence, where she will train to become a qualified accountant.

Headway celebrates 40 years FRENCHAY-based Headway Bristol, the charity that helps survivors of brain injury to live as independently as possible, will be celebrating its 40th anniversary with a gala ball later this month. The event will have a sporting theme, due to the connection between head injury and sport. Sporting personalities and special guests who will be speaking in support of the charity at the event include author and professional horse rider, Polly Williamson, retired senior England rugby referee, Ed Morrison, and BBC Points West presenter, Will Glennon. Both Polly Williamson and Will Glennon sustained severe brain injuries, and Will and his wife Emily have been supported by Headway Bristol in his recovery. Ed Morrison and his family have been fundraising and supporting Headway Bristol since the loss of their son Scott who died following a brain injury in 2014. The Headway Bristol 40th Anniversary Gala Ball takes place on Thursday September 28 at The Bristol Hotel at 7pm. The evening will include a three course meal, dancing and music. Kate Croucher, chief executive officer of Headway Bristol, said the ball is an opportunity to celebrate the charity's history and look forward to the future: “Headway Bristol started out in 1977 based on a site in Frenchay Hospital founded by Rita Rees. Fast forward to today in 2017, we are based in our own refurbished premises in Frenchay, with over 30 members of staff supporting over 40 service users and

Polly Williamson, author and professional horse rider, will be one of the special guests at the gala ball. Polly sustained a subarachnoid haemorrhage after a horse she was training for competitions fell, and in its panic, kicked her in the head. Although she was wearing a helmet, Polly had significant problems with her memory and had to learn to walk and talk again. Reflecting on her recovery, Polly wrote ‘Where Did I Go?: Rediscovering My Identity, Lost After a Traumatic Brain Injury’ which was published in April 2016. providing over 300 hours of oneto-one outreach every week." The service provided by Headway Bristol provides a lifeline for many survivors of brain injury across Bristol, North and North East Somerset, and South Gloucestershire. The charity needs to raise more than £200,000 each year to maintain its services, expand provision

and pilot new initiatives. Tickets for the charity ball cost £45 per person, or tables of ten people at £400. For a booking form, contact Clio Khan at Headway Bristol, by sending an email to info@headwaybristol. org.uk, or call 0117 340 3771. http://bit.ly/2ttGBv6

Chernobyl respite CHILDREN from a region of Belarus which is still affected by the Chernobyl disaster have been staying with families in and around Downend thanks to the efforts of a local charity. The Bristol Link of Chernobyl Children's Life Line flew 16 children to the area in July for a four-week respite break from the ongoing health effects of the 1986 disaster. Eight boys and eight girls from the Belarusian town of Osipovichi and the nearby village of Protesavichi stayed with local volunteer families and returned home on August 6. Accompanying them were two teachers who acted as interpreters.

n PHARMACY

Making a healthy school term start for all IT’S that time of the year again! After weeks of summer fun, it’s time to go back to school and your local pharmacy is at hand to help make a healthy start and also deal with any health questions and worries. What help is available?

0117 9322293 24 Ellacombe Road, Longwell Green, BS30 9BA Column by Jess Williams of Ellacombe Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being whilst also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care

Healthy eating. There are lots of messages around promoting healthy eating but some can be confusing. Why not come into the pharmacy to pick up some clear information or talk to one of our friendly health advisors? Remember a healthy diet, helps growth and development, reduces sick days off school but also improves academic results! If your child is a picky eater, we can discuss options to support them with multivitamins. Ellacombe Pharmacy is proud to support the Sugar Smart initiative ,

encouraging children to swap sugary drinks and snacks for fruits and yoghurts. Head lice or Nits affect 1 in 3 school children and their families. Nits can survive in long hair for a long time if untreated. Performing a head check weekly especially for young children is a good idea. Not sure what to look for? The pharmacy team is able to advise on the correct comb detection method. Threadworms are tiny worms that you may notice around your child's bottom or in their poo, particularly in children under 10. They don't always cause symptoms although itchiness around the bottom or vagina is common. This can be worse at night and disturb sleep. Don't panic if you come across them, we can help! Small lumps appearing on the skin of hands or feet could be Warts or Verrucas. They tend to

affect children more than adults. They are caught by close skin-toskin contact e.g sharing shoes, socks and towels. The infection can also be caught from contaminated objects or surfaces, such as the area surrounding a swimming pool. Ellacombe Pharmacy offers help diagnosing all of these conditions correctly, alongside providing scientifically proven cost effective treatment options suitable for the whole family. Don't forget to also check with your GP Surgery that your children's vaccinations are up-todate. For the rest of the family, as part of our commitment to promoting healthy living and well being, this September we are starting our FREE walk-in NHS Flu vaccinations. No appointments required. In addition, FREE blood pressure checks are available as part of the ''Know Your Numbers " month.

Warning over telephone scam RESIDENTS are being urged to be alert after reports of a telephone scam in which householders are told they owe money for unpaid taxes. The scam, which has been highlighted by the national fraud and cyber-crime reporting centre Action Fraud, is affecting people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire who have incorrectly been told they owe money to Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC). A couple in their 80s from South Gloucestershire contacted police officers after receiving a call in August claiming they owed money and threatening them with arrest if they did not pay. The couple contacted police rather than paying any money, but they were worried and distressed by the call. A woman in her 80s from

Bristol was persuaded to pay several thousand pounds after receiving a number of calls at the beginning of August. She was contacted by a man claiming to be from HMRC who instructed her to transfer cash without telling her family or the bank what it was for. She then had calls from someone claiming to be a police officer, who said she could be arrested if she did not make further payments. The scam was finally reported to police when she mentioned the 'tax fines' to a relative. An investigation is under way. Action Fraud has issued a number of warnings about variations on this scam. n BOOK REVIEW - HANHAM LIBRARY

My Life in Houses Margaret Forster My Life in Houses was one of Margaret Forster’s last books before she died of cancer last year. Perhaps it was the knowledge of her illness that prompted Margaret to write this memoir of her life, basing it on the different houses she lived in. She chronicles her life from her birth in a council house on an estate in Carlisle through college rooms and then digs in Oxford. Married life led her to a rented flat in a villa in Hampstead before she and her husband bought a rundown old house in Boscastle Road in a similar area, complete with sitting tenant in the downstairs flat. Lots of renovations were required. The family spent 14 months living an idyllic life in a villa in Portugal before returning to their Boscastle Road house. Margaret takes us through all the ups and downs of her personal and family life in the houses where they took place, and at the end of the book is back at home coping with her illness. This book is both funny and poignant in places. You meet lots of eccentric (and bizarre!) characters in the different houses and see how Margaret’s career developed as she lived in different places. A recommended read. Julie

THE COLOUR Fun Run returns to Oldbury Court again this year. It follows the success of last year's charity event when more than 750 people followed a 5km route through the estate. Participants chose to walk, job, run - and even dance - their way around, raising more than £15,000 for Bristol homelessness charity See Change, formerly Julian House. The Colour Fun Run is popular because of its huge fun element where participants get covered in colourful - but washable - powder paint. Along every kilometre of the route is a paint station where race marshals do their best to get everyone covered in paint. Entry for this year's event, on October 1, is now open and people are being encouraged to sign up and have some fun. Gemma Allsop, event fundraiser for See Change, said: “Now in its third year, we want to make 2017 our biggest and best event yet. It’s a really fun

Wagons roll KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY FOR our August topic, Mike Horler presented ‘My Life With Shire Horses’ with a slide show depicting his involvement with these magnificent animals over the years. Mike is a wheelwright and wagon and carriage maker and owner of many shire horses. We saw scenes from the shows and competitions he has entered and won prizes at all over the country and his other varied activities such as film and TV work using his horses and wagons in UK and abroad. On July 22 we paid a visit to the historic town of Stratford on Avon and took a boat trip to see the historic town from the River Avon. We had time to explore the many interesting Tudor buildings associated with Shakespeare including his birth place and last resting place. On September 5, Tony Harcourt will acquaint us with ‘The Medieval Archer’ and on October 3 our topic is ‘The Dramway and Avon Wharf’ - both surely unmissable! The Kingswood History Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month (March – December), at 7.30pm, in Room 4 at the Park Centre, Kingswood High Street, (opposite the civic centre BS15 9TR, parking in Hollow Road). Anyone interested in joining us should visit our website www. kingswoodhistorysociety.org or just come along to our meetings. Cost is £2.50 per visit including tea/coffee and biscuits. Annual subscription is only £20. Paul Hanmore

New helicopter for air ambulance GREAT Western Air Ambulance Charity has received a new version of its helicopter, which will allow its team to deliver an enhanced service to the people of South Gloucestershire and the surrounding area. The new aircraft can hold more fuel and heavier loads, which will allow for an additional 45 minutes’ flying time and enable the crew to carry additional equipment if needed. It is a more modern version of the helicopter that the charity used to lease, with minor upgrades to the controls and comfier seats for the crew. Five new members have joined the GWAAC team, including CEO Anna Perry, critical care paramedics Dee Gordon, Jack Kilminster and Mark Kinsella, and Andrew Holstock, who is a full-time Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) Doctor. Speaking of the charity’s new

2008, and in June we had our longest ever flying time when we attended a job in Pembrokeshire, which involved a total of 4.5

hours in the air. In order to do this, we had to refuel twice as we then took the patient to hospital in Birmingham. “We are delighted to have received our new helicopter, as it means that we can now deliver our life saving emergency care to people across a much wider area, helping a larger community than ever before.” John Wood, specialist critical care paramedic, added: “Our new crew members are joining a team that deliver the highest level of emergency assistance to the people of our region, and I am very pleased to welcome them on board.” The charity needs to raise £2.6 million each year to stay operational, but receives no day to day funding from the Government or National Lottery. n ON THE BEAT

Safety first on return to school run

With PC Lee Humphreys

THE darker autumn nights mean we should all take more care on our roads. This is especially true as it’s a new school term and some children will be walking to school with their friends for the first time. If your child walks to school, please remind them how to cross the road safely – ideally using a pedestrian crossing, making sure they can see clearly in each direction and always looking both ways. They should be aware of their surroundings, so not staring at their phone or listening to music so they can’t hear approaching traffic. Make sure they wear appropriate reflective clothing, and if they cycle they should wear a helmet and have lights and reflectors on their bike. Those rules apply to adults as well!

Road safety is one of our priorities and we know it’s a concern for you as it’s often raised at community meetings, especially around schools. We’d like to remind anyone dropping children off or collecting them: • never park on the yellow zigzags • slow down • respect the crossing attendant, if there is one • park with consideration for residents South Gloucestershire’s roads are getting safer, but if one child is injured on our roads that is one too many. We all have responsibility as road users to help to keep them safe, whether we walk, drive, cycle

Have you seen the signs?

or ride a motorbike. One of the important things motorists must do is obey speed and parking restrictions which are put in place to protect other road users. We work with South Gloucestershire Council to enforce parking restrictions outside schools – they’re there to help keep our children safe. If you park on a double yellow line or a yellow zig zag, council enforcement officers can issue you with a fine of £60 or £100 respectively. Parking on the white zig zag at a zebra crossing, or causing any unnecessary obstruction could mean a police ticket with a penalty of an £100 fine. We’d prefer it if everyone just allowed a little more time for the school run and parked with more care!
