Mum tells of e-scooter ordeal TEARAWAYS on electric scooters knocked over a pram in Hanham High Street as a mum walked home with her four children. Skye Taynton told the Voice it happened on Monday August 10. Three boys shot straight over a T-junction at high speed, hitting her and her seven-week-old baby’s pram and narrowly missing her other children aged nine, seven and one. She said: “Everyone was very shaken. I posted on Facebook after reporting it to the police, and received almost 200 shares and comments from people saying they’ve had similar experiences by boys who fit the same description, either being almost hit while walking or cycling, having abuse shouted at them, and having them circle cars and forcing the cars to stop and then banging on the windows scaring the passengers - one of which was a grandparent and her three-yearold granddaughter. “No one seems to know exactly who they are, and I want to raise awareness about this, mainly before someone gets hurt - including them, as if a car had been at that crossing they’d have gone through the passenger window and hurt themselves and the passengers.” Writing on Facebook, Skye, who lives in Hanham, said: “When I shouted at them they laughed at me! The boy who hit me who found it particularly funny was about 12, blond hair and a red T-shirt. I have reported it to the police because if I’d been an elderly lady there would have been broken bones. My poor baby luckily he wasn’t seriously hurt!” Comments in response included: “I'm pretty sure I saw these boys Friday morning

Skye Taynton with her four children, who were shaken by the incident in Hanham, weaving in and out of people on the High Street, one of them nearly rode into an elderly lady outside of Lloyd's bank, I've seen them previously in Hanham so must be local”, and “Disgusting behaviour. There was a bunch of lads going along Memorial the other day on bikes, completely surrounded my car, laughing their heads off that I had to slow for them. My kids were in the car too. The lads had no helmets on and were swearing at us. I would be horrified if my boys grew up like that!” A spokesman for Avon & Somerset Police

said: “On Monday 10 August we received a report about an incident of antisocial behaviour in Hanham High Street in which three children on electric scooters knocked over a woman’s pram. The incident happened at about 3.30pm. “One of the children is described by the victim as a boy aged between 10 and 12, with short blond hair, wearing a red T-shirt. “If you saw anything, or have any information, get in touch with us on 101 quoting log AS-20200810-0786.”

'Act sensibly' call to night-time drinkers MARSHALS are patrolling outside pubs in Kingswood at weekends to persuade drinkers to act sensibly and try to prevent a second wave of coronavirus. They have been introduced by South Gloucestershire Council, which has identified the area as a “hotspot” for potential issues now that people can drink in the street at a safe distance from each other. The marshals are there between 11pm and 3am on Friday and Saturday nights to persuade drinkers to act “sensibly and responsibly” and identify problem drinkers so they can be stopped from being served any more alcohol, a spokesman said. The marshals wear uniforms and body cameras, are not costing the council any extra money since they are taxi marshals who have been redeployed, he added. Liberal Democrat councillor Jon Lean, whose questions to the Conservative administration revealed the new scheme, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he was pleased the council was supporting pubs to enforce social distancing guidelines.

MP's childhood playground gets revamp

WORK is under way on a facelift for a play area in Longwell Green. A new slide will replace the old spiral slide, which has had to be removed before it became unsafe. The new slide tower will be suitable for children aged four and upwards and will have some accessible features for children with mobility issues. The £30,000 project includes improving the rubber surfacing throughout the play area at Williams Close. Work was due to begin on August 25 and take about two weeks, depending on the weather. The revamp has been welcomed by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore, who said: “Growing up in Longwell Green as a child, the Williams Close play area is where my parents would take me and so I have very fond childhood memories of it. It has changed a lot in the thirty

spaces and play equipment for local children to enjoy, particularly as they look to get outside more with the gradual relaxation of lockdown.”

or so years since then and it’s great to hear that it is to receive another round of improvements so it can continue to serve local families, thanks to the local council's record investment plans.”

Councillors for Longwell Green Toby Savage and Christine Price added: “We are delighted about these much-needed upgrades to the play area. It is important for our communities to have good quality public

Roundabout work set to take 13 months OVERNIGHT roadworks are taking place as part of the upgrade to the Wraxall Road roundabout on the Avon Ring Road. The £5.9 million scheme to turn the junction of the A4174 with Tower Lane and Wraxall Road in Kingswood into a “through-about” began last month and is expected to take 13 months. South Gloucestershire Council has said the work that requires lane closures will take place overnight to minimise traffic disruption. It expects that the lane closures, which are needed so that crews can remove and replace central crash barriers, will take place nightly between 8pm and 6am from September 7 until December 18 and will be noisy. Narrow lanes have also been installed and a temporary

Work is under way on the £5.9m upgrade of the roundabout speed limit of 30mph has been introduced. In a post on its StreetCare Facebook page, the council said: “We apologise in advance for the

noise these works will generate. “Our teams will do everything they can to minimise the disruption caused. “These dates may be subject to

change and we will continue to keep the community up to date.” The scheme to improve the roundabout, known locally as the Woodstock roundabout, is being funded by the West of England Combined Authority. The work will see the capacity on the roundabout increased on all approaches in a bid to reduce congestion and improve pedestrian and cycling links. It also includes converting the roundabout into a fully signal-controlled through-about – a roundabout with lanes of traffic through the middle – which will help to reduce delays by managing volumes of traffic. Work will also include widening all approaches to the roundabout to three lanes of traffic, creating three lanes of traffic in each direction through the roundabout and removing some vegetation on verges to facilitate the extra lanes.

Firefighter's 960-mile charity ride A FIREFIGHTER from Hanham is attempting to cycle 960 miles in eight days in aid of charity. Luke Matthews, who serves at Southmead Fire Station, is pedalling from John o’ Groats to Land’s End. He is riding for 12 hours a day and is set to reach the finish line on September 4.. He aims to raise £2,500 for The Fire Fighters Charity and The Samaritans. Luke has a personal reason for taking part: his close friend RAF Corporal Jon Ward died during the lockdown just days before he had been due to complete a 100-mile run in aid of the Samaritans. Luke is not only aiming to raise the money for both charities but also raise awareness of mental health issues and the impact they can have. Luke is cycling solo (with a support vehicle), camping along the way. He trained for the journey in just six weeks. He said: “Lockdown has been a tough period for everyone – but even more tough for those who are isolated. When I heard that Jon had passed away, I was devastated. “He was a superb ambassador for fitness, fundraising and our Armed Forces so what better way to honour him than cycling the length of the country.” “This is going to be a really hard challenge but I know he would have done the same. In fact, he would have run it. It is merely a drop in the ocean

compared to his fundraising efforts. However, If the funds or awareness I raise make a difference to just one person, then it’s worth it.” To donate, visit https://www.gofundme.com/f/ end-to-end-appeal

YOUNG people from the Hanham and Longwell Green area are heading off to higher education and apprenticeship and training places this month after the Covid-19 emergency. Most were unable to attend school for five months and did not sit their exams. Results were announced on August 13, based on estimates from schools standardised by the awarding bodies overseen by the regulator Ofqual. The algorithm used meant that many students saw their ‘centre assessed grades’ reduced, meaning they would miss out on their chosen university. After a storm of protest from schools, students, parents and politicians, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson reversed his decision to stick to the moderated grades and said students could be awarded their centre assessed grades or the Ofqual ones if these were higher. Schools, which had used a rigorous process to ensure the assessed grades were fair and accurate, welcomed this move. The furore overshadowed the extensive achievements of young people. Here’s a round-up of some of the local successes. a record number of university entrants as well as some unique and exciting alternative industry successes. In total, 120 students followed specialist diploma pathways in partnership with Boomsatsuma, achieving an average grade of a distinction or higher. Students have won places on drama courses at Bristol Old Vic and Italia Conti Drama School and university and higher education courses including computer science and cyber security, illustration, game art, maritime film making and sports journalism.

Students have also secured apprenticeships for example with Netflix, National Youth Film Academy and Natural History Production. Principal Lis Jolley said, “I am delighted to celebrate another year of career and industry success with our exceptional students, who at this incredibly challenging time have secured for themselves some truly exciting destinations. To see so many of our students stepping out into such high quality courses and institutions is extremely satisfying and is richly deserved after all their hard work. ”

MEET THE TEACHER

Message from Louise Hamilton, Headteacher at Broadlands Academy

As the new Headteacher at Broadlands Academy, I can’t wait to welcome our students back to school after the long period of lockdown. Although it’s been 21 years since I qualified as a teacher, I still feel that teaching is the best job in the world, and am very excited about that moment when our students walk through the school gates, filling the air with the bustle and laughter that staff have missed so much! Although lockdown has been an unusual time to start as Headteacher, I have used this period to plan for the next exciting stage of Broadlands’ development; I look forward to sharing our ideas with many of you at our Open Events this Autumn. As a parent myself, I fully understand the magnitude of the decision about which secondary school is right for your child. If you do choose Broadlands, your child will spend their years with us being supported and challenged both academically and socially. We have a highly capable and committed leadership team, a talented and caring staff, and an ambitious curriculum that will enrich your child and enable them to fulfil their goals and dreams; we are also privileged to have the

‘small school feel’ that helps our young people have a sense of belonging. A further benefit of Broadlands is that the school is part of the wider Academies Enterprise Trust (AET) family of schools, which means that we have access to some of the best educational expertise in the country! Over the past few months, our children have benefited hugely from the vast range of online resources provided by AET, as well as from our staff’s willingness to go the extra mile. I very much hope to be able to meet many of you in person at our Open Evening, which will take place on Tuesday 29th September from 6-8pm; we will also be offering Open Morning tours from 9-11am on Tuesday 6th, Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th October. They have gained employment with companies all over the region including Airbus, BT and Atkins. Marian Curran, Principal at St Brendan’s said:“Congratulations to our students. Nothing should take away from our students’ achievements and we are proud of their fortitude, resilience and determination. “I would also like to pay tribute to all staff at

the college who taught, supported and cared for our students as we worked from home. The care and attention shown by all teachers when arriving at centre assessed grades for each of our students exemplified the quality, professionalism and dedication of our staff.” IKB ACADEMY IKB Academy in Keynsham, Wellsway Multi Academy Trust’s specialist science, technology, engineering and maths centre, has seen excellent results in STEM subjects for a fourth successive year. A*s for hard work and positive attitude

SIXTEEN-year-olds are celebrating “the GCSE grades they deserve” following a late change by the Government. Those who took BTec qualifications were still awaiting their delayed results as the Voice went to print but schools and colleges were working hard to ensure all students could take up appropriate places this month. South Gloucestershire’s cabinet councillor for schools, Erica Williams, said: “This has been a particularly challenging year because of Covid, but we know that our students have worked extremely hard to achieve these grades and they should be very proud of their individual successes. "We would remind students and parents that if they are still unsure about their next steps, Post 16 advice and guidance is available through their school, at College, via Careerpilot online or via the National Careers Service Helpline for Teenagers on 0800 100 900.” Hanham Woods Academy YEAR 11 students at Hanham Woods Academy have been awarded fantastic GCSE grades thanks to their hard work, dedication and positivity . Principal Steve Kneller said: "We were

delighted to see so many Year 11 students collecting their results today. We have not seen them for such a long time and to be able to celebrate their results with them, in person, was fantastic. We are so immensely proud of their achievements, which are fully deserved." Sir Bernard Lovell Academy THE school in Oldland Common is celebrating some very strong results, including several high performers and a number of students who have made outstanding progress. Stephen Kerfoot scored grade 9s across the board, while Charlotte Kington achieved eight 9s, Jakob Medlin five 9s and four 8s and Olivia Curry four 9s and three 8s. Other high achievers were Ruby Gabler, Chloe Fear, Oliver Adams, Jessica Duck, Megan Hadley and Chiana Butterfield. Joshua Bond, Anna Fielden-Smith, Kai Johnson, Freya Andrews, Millie Rothwell, Eve Alford, Lucie Dagger, Hannah Leonard, Sophie Lumber, Maver Ribeiro and Fin Davis have been commended for making exceptional progress in their time at Sir Bernard Lovell Academy across the full range of subjects.

Digitech Studio School DIGITECH thanked parents for supporting Year 11 students during the pandemic. Principal Lis Jolley said: "It has been a happy results day at Digitech with students receiving grades that have allowed them to take the next steps in education or apprenticeships. Students have exciting plans as they move on to A-levels, vocational courses, and apprenticeships. We are celebrating the excellent results they so richly deserve and thanking parents and staff for their work throughout the last five years. Our aim is to support each student to secure their desired post 16 course. "

n NEWS BRISTOL Rovers Supporters Junior Football Club has been refused permission to sell alcohol at its Soundwell pavilion after dozens of residents objected. South Gloucestershire councillors rejected the club’s premises licence application to serve drinks to parents and non-members from 6- 9pm weekdays and noon to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday despite no opposition from the police or environmental health. A total of 34 neighbours objected on the grounds it could cause public nuisance, antisocial behaviour and leave broken glass on the adjacent playing fields in Church Road. Applicant Nick Hammond said the sale of booze would be in plastic cups and was purely an alternative to teas and coffees for parents watching their children play football, as well as raising much-needed money to help maintain the site, which it leases from the council. But licensing sub-committee members voted 2-1 to refuse it.

Rovers pavilion licence refused

Conditions had been agreed with the police, fire service and the council’s regulatory teams before the meeting, but approval was needed from the panel. Mr Hammond told the remote hearing on Wednesday (August 5) that the club had never received a complaint about its other site at Southey playing fields in Kingswood, which serves

alcohol. He said the bar at Soundwell would be open only during matches and training sessions and that it would be shut by 7pm on “99.9 per cent” of Saturdays. Mr Hammond said the club was already responsible for clearing up all litter. “As a junior football club and the 25-year tenants of Soundwell

Park there is an enormous cost, including £3,000 for grasscutting, £100-a-month bin collections and staff costs,” he said. “We very much want to be part of the community and welcome them to use our facility for any events.” Members heard the club had wanted to hold a public meeting to alleviate neighbours’ concerns but that the pandemic prevented this. Only one of the residents who objected attended the meeting but after hearing the club’s case she said her concerns had been addressed. The club has 21 days to appeal to the magistrates’ court, where costs could be awarded against the council if the decision is overturned. • Report by Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

MP backs tougher sentences for dangerous driving A MOVE to increase the the maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving from 14 years to life imprisonment has been backed by Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore. The MP has been calling for a change in the law ever since the death of tandem riders Ross and Clare Simons at the hands of a disqualified driver in Hanham in 2013. He has been supporting and campaigning alongside Ross and Clare’s families to reform the current legislation and ensure law-breaking drivers face tougher sentences. Now Mr Skidmore has given his backing to the Death by Dangerous Driving (Sentencing) Bill, which had its First Reading in July. The Second Reading is due in October. It follows a 2017 consultation on driving offences and penalties relating to causing death or serious injury which found significant support for increasing the maximum sentence for this offence. The Bill, which has won cross-party support, would amend the Road Traffic Offenders Act. It has

been introduced by former Prime Minister Theresa May and Mr Skidmore is a co-sponsor. Mr Skidmore has pushed to strengthen the law on dangerous driving and has raised the issue at the highest level of Government, speaking in Parliamentary debates and meeting Ministers, as well as presenting a 15,000-strong petition to 10 Downing Street. His efforts were also recognised by the road safety charity Brake who awarded him a national road safety award in 2014. Mr Skidmore said: “Having campaigned alongside the families of Ross and Clare to introduce tougher sentences for serial driving offenders and disqualified drivers, I have seen the impact death by dangerous driving can have on the victim’s loved ones and the community. “I am therefore delighted to be able to continue to push for reform in this area and co-sponsor this Bill to help achieve justice for victims and their families, and I look forward to monitoring the Bill’s progress to the next stage."

n NEWS

Share your views on health services Show the love A CLEANER, greener future where the things (and people) we love are protected .. Following last month’s column I’d like to introduce you to the Climate Coalition. There’s that word love again. On June 30 this year the Climate Coalition www. theclimatecoalition.org organised a national mass zoom lobby of MPs inviting constituents to invite their MPs to discuss how we as a nation can support a green recovery following on from Covid 19. Unfortunately Chris Skidmore, MP for the Kingswood constituency, was unable to take part but we don’t want to give up on making as many voices heard in parliament as possible. Following are some extracts from a message from an environmentalist in Kingswood. “The pandemic is just one of the catastrophes to sweep many parts of our world and in recent times we have witnessed floods, raging fires and extinction of species destroyed by rising temperatures. We know we are living in a climate crisis due in large to the actions of us humans and, whilst this country has targets to be carbon neutral by 2050, many scientists are telling us that this is not soon enough. The looming economic crisis is serious and scary but gives the government opportunities for retraining and the growth of new green industries providing jobs and working towards better lives for all. It is encouraging that the government is already consulting on bringing forward the day for banning the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles but I'm sure we would all like to encourage them to do more. It is only when politicians are made aware of what their constituents feel strongly about that they are able to represent

those interests and concerns, and reflect them in policy. Recent research found that many MPs don't feel confident about raising climate issues at Westminster, in part, because they don't believe these issues reflect what their constituents want. We know that Chris Skidmore has the interest of all the people in his constituency at heart but if we don't tell him we care about the environment, and keep reminding him of the importance and value of a green recovery, how can he represent that view in parliament?” So, what is your passion? Is it trees; support for ethical and eco friendly companies enabling them to grow, thus creating new jobs; finding ways of dealing with plastic pollution or something else? I would really like to encourage you to write to Chris Skidmore (writing is more effective than emailing) or to your own MP if you live outside the Kingswood constituency; tell him what YOU would like to see happen as part of the green recovery. Everybody’s voice is important and should be heard. There is now a small group of us who keep in contact by WhatsApp to encourage each other. The more voices that come together the louder the noise, so we would like to invite you to become part of a growing voice expressing our concerns, but also hopes and wishes for the government to work towards a carbon-free environment by 2030/35 and not wait till 2050. if you would like to know more about us and join us please do get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you. Take care, till next time Penny

THE body that aims to gather and champion the views of health and social care services users is looking for residents to share their feedback. Healthwatch South Gloucestershire provides a platform for patients to share their experiences of services. Maisy Griffiths, area lead, said: “We’ve had to totally change our way of getting feedback over the last six months due to coronavirus. We used to go out and talk to people at places like libraries and leisure centres, but now we are encouraging people to get in touch in different ways, such as ringing us and visiting our Share Your Views website page, which is the easiest and most efficient way for us to get feedback.

“The more people share their ideas, experiences and concerns about the NHS and social care, the more services can understand what works, what doesn't and what people want from care in the future. “Your feedback will be anonymous and make up part of the evidence we use to help health and social care service providers improve how they run services locally and nationally. “We are not a complaints organisation, but are there to amplify the patient voice and help improve health and care. If it matters to you, it's likely it matters to someone else too.” To find out more and share your experience, visit: www. healthwatchsouthglos.co.uk/ share-your-views

Hanham Athletic FC: 'The Miners' ONE of the Museum’s new exhibitions for 2020 features one of the oldest football clubs in the Bristol area, Hanham Athletic FC. The exhibition has been put together with the assistance of the club, and includes photographs of teams and players past and present, club memorabilia and trophies. The Gloucestershire FA recognises the Club as being established in 1896, however the Club is believed to have been established much earlier. The earliest league records of the club date from 1895, when the club played in the South and Bristol District League Division 1 under the name of Hanham Football Club. Hanham Athletic currently play in the Premier Division of the Gloucestershire County League. They played in the FA Cup in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as the FA Vase during the 1970s, and played in the GFA Trophy in 1960 v Bristol Rovers A at the then Eastville Stadium (now Tesco’s), practicing beforehand under lights which they had not experienced before. The club has close ties with the local mining industry. This was illustrated during an FA Cup tie with Torquay United in 1921. Athletic drew 2-2 at Torquay, but lost the replay 3-1 at the Swan Ground (Vicarage Rd). The story goes that the referee at the home game told the Hanham players, who wore all white kit, to return to the changing rooms to wash before kick off because they had only just come from the local coal pits. The museum is open every Tuesday and Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm, and admission is free. Kingswood Museum is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11am until 5pm. It is located in the former Champion Brass Works, at Tower Lane, Warmley, BS30 8XT, just off Avon Ring Road (Cadbury Heath exit). Buses 19, 19a, 42 and 43 stop nearby.

n NEWS A NEW electric vehicle that can transport people in wheelchairs has been added to the Kingswood Community Transport fleet. Operators received the keys to the people carrier alongside their counterparts from Green Community Travel in Yate and Four Towns and Vale Link Transport in Thornbury. The new Nissans form part of a fleet of 15 vehicles being provided to South Gloucestershire’s community transport operators this year. Six Mercedes Sprinters were handed over in March and six Peugeot Boxers are expected by the end of the year, having been delayed by the Covid-19 shutdown. The vehicles, which will reduce carbon emissions and have lower maintenance costs, are paid for by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Fund. South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for transport Steve Readed said: “We are delighted to present our community transport operators with these new electric vehicles.

The operators are all ‘not for profit’ organisations that have been impacted by reduced income and service during the coronavirus pandemic, so these vehicles come at a much-needed time and will help them survive this impact and continue to provide their valuable service to our residents. “This will also complement our climate change ambitions as electric vehicles play a part in reducing harmful emissions on

our local roads and improving air quality.” West of England Mayor Tim Bowles said: “Community transport offers a vital lifeline for our residents who otherwise may not be able to get out and about. During the pandemic community transport groups have continued to provide a limited service for essential shopping, medical appointments and emergency deliveries of food parcels and medicines. From August all the community transport groups have introduced local trips with reduced numbers. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Looking to a brighter future

A

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

S lockdown eases it is fantastic to see progress re-start on so many local schemes and projects across Kingswood that are so important for the futures of our children, celebrating our heritage and protecting our local climate. It is exciting to see the council begin consultation this summer on the design for the new ‘all-through’ Lyde Green School, which will have a 420-pupil primary phase and a 900-pupil secondary phase, aiming to take its first pupils in 2022. The school facilities, including its sports pitches, will be available for community use outside of school hours. This is the latest new school that I continue to campaign for in the area and I have raised with Ministers the importance of this

project receiving the necessary government funding. More than ever, it’s vitally important to champion and celebrate our local history. As a historian, I was delighted to support the approval of the listed building application to stabilise the historic Whitfield Tabernacle in Kingswood town centre. The Tabernacle is most famous for its role in the emergence of non-conformist religion and the birth of Methodism - its full restoration remains a top local priority for me. As a former Government Minister who was responsible for signing into law the UK’s commitment to end its contribution to global warming by 2050, I am delighted to learn of the locations for new

electric vehicle charging points. More than half of the 14 new charging points across South Gloucestershire, including rapid (50kW) and fast (7-22kW), will be located in the Kingswood constituency, with one fast point in Laburnum Road car park in Hanham and two fast points in Cecil Road car park in Kingswood. A further six points, six rapid and one fast, will compromise a flagship West of England charging hub at the Bristol and Bath Science Park in Emersons Green. The council has said that all are set to be operational by March 2021. As the local MP, I will continue to support initiatives to help our local area recover and renew from the pandemic and these are just the start of what’s needed.

Outstanding care. Tailor made for you.

Team honoured THE team at Ellacombe Pharmacy in Longwell Green have been honoured for their work during the Covid-10 emergency. They have received a certificate from Keynsham and District Lions Club in recognition of the way they have worked to support the community at a time of crisis. Lead pharmacist Ade Williams said: "The team have worked tirelessly over the last months to make sure that everyone in the community is supported and cared for. "With GP surgeries restricting access to premises, Ellacombe pharmacy’s role as the most accessible NHS output alongside supporting community and mutual aid groups has been very rewarding - even with its physical and emotional toll. It is so nice to see it recognised by the community."

n NEWS

Abbeyfield offers a safe retirement option THE Covid-19 pandemic has meant a difficult time for many people but, with our elderly generation high on the ‘at risk’ scale, Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham’s chief executive Frances Stretton has just about started to breathe again. With early, preventative action and comprehensive additional measures in place, the retirement organisation has, to date, had no coronavirus cases across its five Bristol houses and has now officially opened its doors again to new residents. How have you managed to keep residents safe during the pandemic? We always have stringent hygiene and infection control procedures in place and we significantly increased measures to reduce the risk of infection across all our houses. We immediately introduced enhanced cleaning regimes and social distancing, such as different sittings at mealtimes, or spreading residents between different rooms to eat, and insisted on at least 3 metres’ distance at all times. I have to say our staff members have been incredible and remain absolutely committed to the health and well-being of our residents. We’re a strong team and I’m so very proud of everyone.

APPLIANCE REPIRS

How did residents cope? The hardest thing for residents was not being able to see their loved ones. We had to limit visitors to carers, or a family member or friend acting in the capacity of carer. As a retirement organisation whose ethos centres around community, companionship and helping older people remain independent, having to ask residents to stay in the house during lockdown was also very difficult. What is the current situation across your houses? We haven’t been able to show potential residents around the houses since early March and so our enquiry levels dropped. As

AERIAL SPECIALIST

a result, there are vacancies across most of our houses, which is an unusual situation for us to be in. I’m also very aware that there are older people who have been isolated from their families during the pandemic, and who might still be struggling to live on their own, and it‘s concerning to think they might lack the confidence to make the move to an environment where they will be happier and more secure. What would you say to reassure families and potential residents? I do appreciate families might be concerned about their loved one moving to a retirement house right now, but I want people to know that it’s completely safe to join any one of our Abbeyfield houses. New residents are currently asked to self-isolate for 10 days in their new apartment but after that, they’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of their new Abbeyfield home. As part of the Safe Hands campaign, Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham is offering all new residents one week free! Houses in Redland, Henleaze, Easter Compton, Hanham and Keynsham.
