NHS under pressure PEOPLE in Longwell Green and Hanham are being urged to help ease pressure on the NHS as demand keeps on rising. Health chiefs say the problems are caused by a combination of more non-Covid activity, staff shortages and continued cases of Covid. More than 70 people were in hospital with the virus in mid August.

Emergency departments have seen unprecedented attendance figures, while many people are reporting difficulty in getting GP appointments. An increase in urgent care demand has significant knock-on effects in the wider health and care system. Dr Peter Brindle, medical director at Bristol, North Somerset and South

Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We are facing a unique set of pressures this summer which are being felt across all health and social care services. Community case rates of coronavirus remain high, and we have a challenging few weeks ahead of us as nonCovid demand continues to rise." Report: Pages 2 & 3

Plans to redevelop the Chief Trading Post site with a new shop and cafe, surgery, and homes have been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council. PAGE 5

Helpful receptionists LOCAL GP surgeries have helpful receptionists, according to the results of the annual NHS GP Patient Survey. In our area, nine out of ten people rated the receptionists at their surgery as helpful and nearly everyone said they had confidence in the medical staff they were seen by. However, more than half of the time patients didn’t get to see the GP they wanted to. On average, 55% of the time they could only get an appointment to see a different doctor. Getting through on the phone to speak to the helpful receptionists was also a big issue at most surgeries. The worst performer was Hanham Health, where nearly half of patients said it was hard to get their call answered. There were marked differences in customer satisfaction at Cadbury Heath

Healthcare, Close Farm Surgery, Hanham Health, Kingswood Health Centre and Orchard Medical Centre. Hanham scored lowest out of the five surgeries in six of the areas measured, including answering the phone, GPs giving patients enough time and showing care and concern, patients seeing their preferred GP and feeling that their needs were met, as well as overall experience. Over the past four years, the it got 17% harder for patients to get through to the surgery by phone. Close Farm Surgery was best at answering the phone (81%), but one in five patients was dissatisfied with the appointment they were offered and a similar number felt their GP didn’t take mental health issues into account. Joe Sims to open Bitton church fete ACTOR Joe Sims will open the St Mary’s Church Fête in Bitton on September 11. Joe’s first steps in acting began as a pupil at Sir Bernard Lovell School and his career has taken him to national and international fame in many roles including that as Nigel Carter in ITV’s Broadchurch. A special welcome awaiting him and others at the event, which opens at 1.30pm. Cakes, jams and chutneys, will be on sale, together with handicrafts, nearly new clothes, household items and books and there will be games such as skittles and a coconut shy. Entertainment will be provided throughout by Oldland Brass Band, the Somerset Moris and Professor Hudd’s Punch and Judy show. Refreshment stalls and a barbecue will be available both on the main field and in the church, as well as cream teas in the garden of Church Farm. There is a licensed bar. Highcroft Veterinary Centre will run a dog show with classes for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Also on show will be an array of classic cars, carefully restored and tended by their owners. The fête will end after the drawing of the raffle - first prize a Fortnum & Mason hamper donated by Fine & Country of Bath and the final special event of the Egg Throwing Competition. The fête is part of activities to maintain the historic church, which has received international attention, this year as churches joined in a celebration of the Ellacombe Chimes – invented in Bitton but used in churches worldwide. The church has also just launched its own Development Appeal with the ambition of modernising its facilities so that the church can become a community hub all year round as well as celebrating and protecting its long history and heritage.

but you might not see the right doctor scored highest for overall patient needs being met and the experience of making an appointment at the surgery was generally good. However, four out of ten patients weren’t satisfied with the available appointments. Kingswood Health Centre was awarded full marks for patients trusting and having confidence in its GPs. Unfortunately it did less well when supporting patients with long-term conditions, getting the lowest score of the five (72%.) Orchard Medical Centre came top for GPs showing care, concern and allowing patients enough time. On the other hand, a third of patients were left unhappy by the appointment-making experience and two thirds couldn’t see their preferred doctor. Around one in six patients from all five surgeries had to

use other NHS services when they were unable to get an appointment or their surgery was shut. Kingswood (26%) and Hanham (23%) patients were most likely to head to A&E when they needed a GP but the surgery was shut. The survey of GP surgeries was carried out by polling group Ipsos Mori for NHS England and NHS Improvement, and was based on around 850,000 responses to questionnaires sent out nationwide from January to March this year. Kingswood ward councillor April Begley, at a meeting of South Gloucestershire Council’s health scrutiny commission, said she had been told that people were phoning doctors’ surgeries only to find they were number 100 in the queue. She said: “If people feel that they cannot speak to somebody

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps • Free planning & design service

then very often what they are doing is going to the A&E, and that actually is helping nobody.” Kingswood’s other ward councillor, Andrea Reid, said: “I know at my own practice that I’ve often had to call 70 times – hang up, redial, hang up, redial – and then find that I’m close to 30 in the queue. “I hear similar from local residents in surrounding practices.” Commission members asked for a report showing the extent of the problem and what was being done to help patients. Record numbers of patients turned up at the A&E departments of Southmead and Bristol Children’s hospitals in June, at a level usually seen in winter months. Health officials have urged people to help them manage the problems caused by staffing shortages and Covid-19.

Hanham's Cinderella seeks fairy godmother IF you’re a dab hand with a paintbrush or handy with a toolkit, Hanham Players are hunting for you. The theatre company is looking for new members to form part of its stage crew for its upcoming pantomime, Cinderella. No experience is needed to join in building, painting and decorating the stage sets for the winter show. A spokesperson said: “We supply all the tools. All you need is a ‘can do’ attitude and a desire to create something from nothing. Come and join our happy group and feel a part of something very special, working to entertain the local community.” A panto wasn’t possible last year because of Covid restrictions, so the last time the group staged a pantomime was in January 2020, when they performed Jack and the Beanstalk just before the pandemic hit. Other planned productions for that year

had to be cancelled. The group rehearses and performs at Hanham Community Centre, where it meets on Wednesdays from 7.30-10pm, plus an additional rehearsal for the cast from 8-10pm on Fridays. To comply with Covid restrictions, early stages of planning for this production had to be held on the

field behind the centre. There is also a youth section for ages 11 to 16, meeting on Friday evenings. Cinderella will be directed by Jessica Lawrence and Louise Parfrey, with the title role played by Rubi Barber. It runs from January 5-9. To get involved email info22@ hanhamplayers.org

Chief Trading Post plans move ahead PLANS have been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council for a mixed-use development on the site of the Chief Trading Post in Oldland Common. The proposals involve a wholesale redevelopment of the site including demolition of the buildings and creation of a sustainable new development providing a GP surgery, community facilities, housing and employment opportunities. In response to existing concerns about traffic on Barry Road, the scheme will deliver traffic calming measures, improvements to road safety for pedestrians and cyclists and better access to local bus stops. A new café and retail space for the popular Chief Trading Post, which has proved to be a community hub during the pandemic, will be included, alongside a new larger surgery for Hanham Health and up to 50 homes including bungalows, market and affordable housing. The development will also include a specialist supported housing scheme for people with learning disabilities, delivered by Elim Housing. New public open space will be provided for use by both residents and the wider community. The enhanced landscaping will

feature native species of trees and shrubs and areas of grassland to support wildlife and increase biodiversity. Roland Tanner from the Chief Trading Post said: “Trading from more modern premises will help safeguard the future for Chief Trading Post, as well as Tooty Fruity and Kelsey’s Pad. The first phase of the development will be the replacement of the cafe and shop, which will be fantastic for us and our customers.” Dr Paul Taylor, of Hanham Health, said: “We are very excited by this opportunity, which is the only realistic option we have found. We have outgrown our existing

These will in turn provide real benefit to our patients. The proposed new site is very close to our current surgery so would be perfect for our patients. We hope to have a decision on planning in the autumn and that patients and residents will support the proposals.” Paul Smith, chief executive of Elim Housing said: “We are delighted to partner with Oldland Common LLP on this much needed supported housing scheme for people with learning disabilities. All too often people with learning disabilities are placed very far from home and their communities due to absence of appropriate accommodation to meet their needs. The proposed scheme will offer tenancies with support on-site that will allow the residents to continue to live close to their families, engaging with education, training, employment and social activities to fulfil their potential.”

New head for Hanham Woods

THE new principal for Hanham Woods Academy is looking forward to a more normal school year when he steps into his role this month. Steve O’Callaghan, 38, has been promoted from vice principal to take on the top role at the school where he’s spent the past three years. He takes over from Steve Kneller, who had been at the school for five years and has left to become deputy CEO at multi-academy trust in Wiltshire. He said: “It’s a huge honour to become principal at Hanham Woods Academy and to take on the mantle from Steve Kneller, who I learned a lot from. “I am looking forward to carrying on our work which saw us move from Special Measures to get a Good rating from Ofsted in 2019. “We didn’t really get chance to capitalise on our Good rating because soon afterwards the pandemic hit and the school closed. “We’ve lived through a period of crisis management, where we were given very short notice to respond to information. We got better at online learning as we went on and we’re very proud of our staff, students, parents and the local community for pulling together over the past 18 months.” Mr O’Callaghan, who grew up in Westonsuper-Mare, said that his biggest challenge in his new job would be supporting and leading the pupils and staff at the school. The replacement vice principal will be Krisha Hendra, who joins from Swindon Academy in January. Until then, Anya Peyton, assistant principal at the school, will be acting vice principal When Mr O’Callaghan isn’t at work, he’s kept busy by his own children, age four and six, at his home in Portbury, North Somerset. He also enjoys long-distance running, having completed an 80 mile and a 100km race in the past year. He said: “I always try to model to the students our school ethos ‘Dream big, work

Steve O'Callaghan takes charge at Hanham Woods Academy this month hard and be kind’ and running is one of the ways I do that. “I tried to complete a 100 mile event in the summer holidays but had to drop out at 66 miles. It’s as much a mental challenge as a physical one and you learn a lot about yourself. I’ve signed up to try again next June.” He has been part of the Cabot Learning Federation for 14 years, having started as a newly-qualified computer science teacher at Bristol Brunel Academy. He said: “Everyone is looking forward to getting back to some form of normality and being able to do simple things that we took for granted before the pandemic. “For example, doing an assembly with the kids in front of you. We’ve done it during the

pandemic, but it doesn’t work as well over Teams. There’s a lot to be said for being able to see the people you’re talking to and looking into their eyes.” A spokesperson for the Cabot Learning Federation, which runs the school, said: “Steve’s in-depth knowledge of our curriculum, leadership experience and alignments with our trust’s values will ensure that he leads Hanham Woods Academy with strength. “HWA’s exceptional progress over the past few years is thanks in part to Steve’s work in the academy’s leadership team, which has seen Hanham go from strength to strength.” The school is holding an open evening for prospective pupils on September 9. Balloon fiesta comes to Hanham Common HOT air balloons ascended from Hanham Common as part of Bristol Balloon Fiesta’s special Fiesta Fortnight. The event this year replaced the usual mass ascents from Ashton Court to avoid people crowding together. Six balloons took off on 11 August from Hanham, which was one of many secret locations across the city chosen to bring the balloons to the people, instead of the other way around. Residents of supported-living home Kift Lodge, which overlooks the common, were given the heads up the night before so they could be up in time to watch the ascent. Joleigh Hayward, manager of the Abbeyfield house, said: “Somebody came in from the balloon fiesta and said the balloons would be going up the next morning. “They said that someone had nominated us as a place that would like to see the balloons and that’s

why they were taking off from the common. “It was a 6.30am start so three or four people went out onto the common, while everyone else watched from their windows.” More than 700 nominations were submitted to help pick the locations of where the balloons took off, and five locations had simultaneous ascents on the morning of Hanham’s ascents, which was a record for the fiesta. Residents Norman, Rosie and Val enjoyed the ascent from a park bench and even got talking to BBC Radio Bristol, who were covering the event. Kift Lodge is made up of 20 supported-living flats looking over the common, and currently has 17 residents. Ms Hayward said: “It’s lovely being next to the common because the residents can get involved in everything going on there, like the fair that normally happens. We even had a stall out there once, selling jewellery and cakes.”

Cabot students triumph at GCSE SCHOOLS in Cabot Learning Federation are celebrating outstanding achievements by its students in their GCSEs and other qualifications this summer. Among them at John Cabot Academy, Faith and Zayd earned grades 8 and 9 in all of their GCSEs, far exceeding their targets, and L’Shonte, who joined the school late in her GCSE career and flourished, achieved a strong set of results. Kate Willis, principal, said: “We are incredibly proud of all the work and achievements of our students, especially after such a difficult and disrupted year. Our teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure students are all able to progress. Our teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure students are all able to progress onto further education and positive employment, and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.” Digitech Studio School in partnership with Boomsatsuma saw excellent results from students in their Post 16 Extended Specialist Diplomas. Over 50 students achieved the highest possible grades in Media, Game Design, Acting and Dance. Many students are now moving on to courses and apprenticeships in these specialist areas. Lis Jolley, the school’s principal, said: “We are immensely proud of all of our students who now move on to

the next part of their journey towards higher education, apprenticeships or employment. It has been a difficult and disrupted two years for these students, but teachers and students worked tirelessly to ensure that courses were completed in their entirety so that students are well prepared for their next steps. We look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.” St Brendan’s Sixth Form College saw 479 students (60%) progressing to university, the highest number of students to do so in the last four years. 26% of students are progressing directly on to employment or an apprenticeship. To see two thirds of our leavers choose university is recognition of this ambition. We love staying in touch with our alumni and can’t wait to follow their careers and accomplishments." SGS College Sixth Form learners are celebrating some outstanding performances. The College was awarded 67 A*/As with 12 learners achieving a clean sweep across the board. 51% of their students secured a high grade (A*/A/B) and 77% (A*-C). The first was stretch and challenge and included analysing song lyrics and urban art creation while the second focused on helping ease the transition to a new school for vulnerable students. Director of Education Gary Schlick said: “These summer schools have been a wonderful success and have really helped young people prepare for the transition to secondary education. n EDUCATION AUGUST 10th, 2021, was an uplifting results day for boomsatsuma College students, with all achieving a qualification, and an impressive 54% awarded a Distinction, or higher, opening up fantastic possibilities for them in Bristol’s creative sector. Mark Curtis, boomsatsuma co-founder, said: “These students have come through challenging Covid-19 pandemic journeys over the past two years, so this is an important boost for them all. They all have these great platforms, that will help them move on to the next stages of their lives, be-it staying in education or into employment. What’s enormous, is that they leave with so much more than qualifications, in terms of work-place experiences, selfconfidence and wider life-skills. “We are now gearing up to return in September with next years’ students with most courses full, there are just a few spaces available for this year and we’ll be opening for 2023 enrolment to find the next generation of Bristol’s creative voices.”

Wellsway School welcomes new Principal Rob Pearsall is the new Principal and Executive Head of Wellsway School and IKB Academy. The Voice gave him a chance to introduce himself Hello Rob, and welcome to Keynsham. Tell us what attracted you to this role. I had the opportunity to lead Plymstock School in Plymouth, where I’d worked since 2009, for two years while the head was on a secondment. I was looking for my own headship and wanted a school and trust that chimed with my values and moral purpose. I found that at Wellsway. What in particular stood out for you about Wellsway? The Wellsway trust, now renamed Futura Learning Partnership, has the highest expectations of its students and staff within a culture of kindness. Wellsway School is a very special place - a caring environment with a team of staff who have the highest aspirations

for the young people in their care. My priority is to ensure that in every classroom our students experience consistent and highly effective teaching and learning, and that their effort is celebrated. How are you getting to know the school? I managed a couple of brief visits since I was appointed at the end of April. I have been struck by the students' politeness and courtesy. What will be your first actions this year? I will work with the Vice Principals

at Wellsway, David Cooper and Sophie Francis, and the Head of School at IKB, Debbie Gibbs, to ensure we continue to provide the very best educational experiences at the heart of the community. There will no major changes to the way we do things, although we always seek to further improve. We have a focus on excellence for both our culture and curriculum, so that it allows all young people to succeed. I am looking forward to getting to know the staff team, the students and their families over the coming year. What do you think has been the impact of the Covid-19 emergency on education? It has been an extraordinary time. It started soon after I had become head at Plymstock and there was so much for everyone to cope with. I learned a lot about myself and the people I worked with. The young people have been incredible, especially those in the exam years. They have shown such

resilience and perseverance and deserve every success. They have bounced back so well. Tell us a bit more about your career to date I’ve been a teacher for 26 years. I started out teaching business studies, ICT and economics, but soon realised that my passion was for the pastoral side of my work. I have led on behaviour, safety and welfare for students, been a special educational needs co-ordinator and worked on reducing the gap between disadvantaged students and their peers. I believe schools must be inclusive, but with an understanding that children need clear boundaries and must be supported to have high expectations. What about beyond work? Outside school, I enjoy being outdoors, whether that’s walking, running or gardening. My wife, who is also a teacher, and I are relocating from Devon. We have two sons, aged 23 and 21.

Futura Sixth offers best of both worlds POST-16 provision in the West of England is stronger from this month (Sep) thanks to the launch of Futura Sixth. This is an inclusive, collaborative sixth form for the schools in Futura Learning Partnership (formerly Wellsway Multi Academy Trust). The trust includes more than 5,500 children and young people from nursery age to adulthood in 13 schools. Futura Sixth is a fully aligned and inclusive post-16 that can meet the needs of all students and prepare them for adult life. Danny Wilkinson, the Trust’s Director of Post 16, said: “Futura Sixth will offer students the best of both worlds. They can choose a home school for their studies but have access to courses on three sites - Wellsway, IKB and SBL - with free transport provided. “Aligning our provision and

collaborating in this way means we can run a broader range of A-levels and vocational subjects, allowing students access to the very best teaching across our Trust. Our young people can retain a pride in their home school and receive support and pastoral care from staff who know them well while at the same time benefiting from wider academic and enrichment opportunities and experiences.” Futura Sixth offers pathways that meet the needs of every individual student, from the Futures programmes for those

improve their Level 2 qualifications. The sharing of the wealth of expertise in the Trust means we are able to ensure equity for all, including vulnerable students, who are supported to apply for bursaries to help them fund travel to school, books and resources. Mr Wilkinson said: “We are confident that our approach will help all our students to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge they need to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential. It is already proving popular – applications for sixth form places in the Trust have risen considerably this year – and we expect numbers to go up even more as students realise the many advantages of being part of Futura Sixth. n AROUND THE WIs

Bidders back in action WHEN the pandemic hit in March 2020, nobody really knew what the future would hold. Businesses either closed, or went online. Auction houses – which are public venues, but also trade online were sort of stuck in the middle. Most closed their doors, few remained online. We were one of the few that continued. Our doors were closed, but the auctions could still run over the internet. Gone were the human faces staring back at the auctioneer, now completely replaced by a webcam – broadcasting all around the world. That’s how we continued for sixteen months. Our first auction after ‘Freedom Day’ on July 19th took place just a few days after, and we were beyond excited to welcome people back in to the saleroom. Sitting on the rostrum just before the sale, hearing the gentle chatter from people in the room was a really emotional experience. It was like a glimpse in the past, a welcome return to something familiar. When the first bidder raised his hand for the first bid, we all cheered (the bidder included!) and there was a really fun atmosphere for the entire day. I grew up going to auctions, way before ‘the internet’ was even a thing. I’ve stood in a room with two hundred other people, all hoping to buy their prized item - I’ve felt the tension, the highs, the lows. To some people it can be a nerve-racking experience, to others it’s an adrenaline rush. So, I like to think I have an understanding from both sides of the fence. The internet can replace the logistics, the prices and the entire auction process. But it can’t replace the social element – seeing the regular bidders each month, having a chat, making people laugh. An auction house isn’t just buying and selling – it’s a social hub. A place where complete strangers - from all backgrounds – can gather, meet, and have a good time. My closing sentence is simple; our auction house is back open – come and say ‘hello’. You would be so very welcome! Let’s put the ‘bid’ back into ‘bidding Andrew Stowe’

HANHAM EVENING WI LAST year certainly saw some difficult times for us but with memories of that fading and confidence growing, albeit cautiously, the branch took the decision to hold three outdoor activities to bring members back together again giving them a chance to enjoy one another’s company and to start to get back to some sort of normality. First was a walk come Treasure Hunt around Conham Vale. About 20 members took part in the event which started from Vicarage Road playing fields. It was organised by one of our own members who set some fiendish clues for us to follow whilst at the same time giving us the opportunity to take in some lovely views, particularly of the River Avon. We finished back at Vicarage Road for a lunch arranged by Hanham Athletic FC. Our second outdoor adventure was a walk through Warmley Forrest, yes Warmley Forrest – it really does exist although most members confessed, they had never heard of it. About a dozen ladies came along to enjoy the hour long walk through some pleasant woodlands which was also organised and led by one of our members. We started at Warmley Station

car park and also finished there and enjoyed a pleasant, and now traditional. WI afternoon tea and cakes. We finished our trio of events with an “Afternoon Tea” in the garden of The Trooper Inn. Some 20 members enjoyed the generous portions served up for us which included, sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones with jam and cream and variety of fancy cakes. Everyone agreed it was probably too much especially for those watching their weight but it made for really pleasant afternoon. We were very fortunate with the weather for all three events and all members felt they were all really worthwhile to get us back together again. We now hope to start meeting indoors again from September. Dianna Coles

MANGOTSFIELD WI WE had a had a lovely time at a coffee morning at the Warmley Waiting Room, which we think is well worth a visit. We also booked Mokka in Downend for a breakfast, and a few of us have booked to see White Christmas at the Hippodrome. On a more serious note we have received an action pack from the National Federation of WIs providing information on a number of initiatives being supported by WIs across the country: ‘The Whole Story’ relates to climate change; ‘Stop Modern Slavery’ and ‘Make a Match’, which addresses the need for more stem cell donors. Works to curb road noise ACOUSTIC fencing is being installed near the Wraxall Road roundabout to reduce excessive noise for residents. It follows lobbying from Conservative ward councillors Sam and Elizabeth Bromiley and a long-running campaign by people living nearby. A 40metre-long, 2.5metre-high concrete sound absorptive barrier is being put up alongside the ring road in place of the wall that was there before. It is close to where where the roundabout is being turned into a fully signal controlled “throughabout”. The two councillors for Parkwall and Warmley ward welcomed the start of the work, which should be completed by mid September, and is being carried out at the same time as the final stage of resurfacing. They said: “We are delighted that work is beginning to install acoustic fencing along the ring road, protecting local homes from unwanted noise from the nearby traffic and we are pleased this will happen alongside the final stages of completing the through-about so as to inconvenience motorists as little as possible. “We have had numerous residents complain to us about the noise they have to live with day in day out, being so close to the ring road. We are

Sam and Elizabeth Bromley at the site pleased to have convinced the council to listen to their concerns and do something about it. This, however, is only the first step and we are keen to see this extended further towards the Kingsfield Roundabout to have as big and as positive an impact as possible.” While the works are taking place, there are planned overnight road closures (8pm to 6am) around the roundabout, along Wraxall Road, Tower Lane and the A4174, for four weeks.

Have a say on green spaces PEOPLE are being encouraged to have their say on plans to improve the network of green spaces and water courses, including parks, nature reserves and other open spaces across South Gloucestershire. The council's draft Green Infrastructure Strategy, known as ‘Greener Places’, is open to comment until September 12. It involves plans to protect the area's "green infrastructure" of parks, woodland, farmland and water, and improve and create more habitat for nature. Council cabinet member for the environment, Steve Reade, said the strategy "recognises that we all have a part to play in responding to the challenges of the changing climate and the nature crisis." People can view the strategy and have their say online at consultations.southglos.gov.uk/ Greener_Places.

It is why I was so concerned earlier in the summer at the potential loss of the 17 bus service and why I was pleased to join efforts from across our community to secure the future of this much-valued service. But no sooner had we worked together to successfully defend this important link to Southmead Hospital, that we received news from the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) that they had decided to withdraw funding from the 18 bus service. The number 18 bus, linking Kingswood to Keynsham and

Bath, is a vital lifeline to many residents. It is a service that many depend on for travelling to work, to school and to visit friends and family. The decision by the West of England Combined Authority to withdraw its subsidy without any public consultation must be reversed. I have launched a petition to reinstate funding for the 18 bus service and you can sign it via my website: www.chrisskidmore. com The petition calls on the West of England Combined Authority and the Metro Mayor to renew funding provided to the Number 18 bus service and allow it to continue to operate, keeping our communities in South

Gloucestershire connected. When subsidised bus services transferred from South Gloucestershire Council to WECA under the previous Mayor, there was a guarantee that services would be protected and improved and I am determined to see WECA live up to these promises. We need to see investment across all modes of transport – whether that is investing in the future of the A4174 Ring Road to improve traffic flow, extending MetroBus and public transport services, along with new walking and cycling routes. Local people need to be helped to get around the area through a range of options that’s suitable

Hair that's fit for a princess HAIR washing will be much quicker from now on for a Hanham schoolgirl who chopped off her locks for charity. Summer Taynton, nine, had 20cm of her hair cut off for the Little Princess Trust. The charity makes wigs from real hair for children who have lost their own hair because of cancer treatment or other conditions. She grew her hair as long as possible before having it cut off at Reflections in Kingswood during the school holidays. She also fundraised £350 for the charity, including getting sponsorship from classmates at Hanham Abbots junior school. Summer’s mother, Skye, said her daughter felt apprehensive ahead of the big chop. She said: “She was a bit nervous but reminded herself it was for a good cause. “She loves her new hair. It

just took a little getting used to. “She’s said she’d do it again.” Summer decided to donate her hair after watching a television programme about children who’d experienced hair loss.

She said: “All of us want to feel that we look nice when we go to school or out somewhere but some children have worse things to worry about because they have serious illnesses such as cancer.”

Crackdown POLICE say they have been targeting speeding and antisocial driving on the ring road, Neighbourhood and road policing teams have been working together to carry out patrols on the A4174 and around the Longwell Green shops and leisure park over the summer. A police spokesperson said officers seized one vehicle for having no tax or insurance, clocked a motorcyclist travelling at 100mph and caught a driver using a mobile phone at the wheel, who now faces a £200 fine and six points on their licence. They have also issued traffic offence reports, which can lead to court action, against motorists with unlawful modifications on their vehicles and warned some drivers their cars could be seized if they're found driving in an anti-social manner again.

Protecting children from chicken pox and teenagers from Meningitis B REMEMBER before the pandemic, when messages on the parent online forum or a letter from the nursery or school would alert about a child with unexplained spots or confirmed diagnosis of chickenpox? Chickenpox commonly affects children, and it is usually worse in adults. Starting with red spots that appear anywhere on the body. The spots fill with fluid that blisters and may burst. They might spread or stay in a small area. The spot cycle repeats itself. You can catch chickenpox by being in the same room as someone with it, contact with clothes or beddings. You can also catch chickenpox from someone with shingles if you have not had chickenpox before.

Chickenpox is infectious from two days before the spots appear until they have crusted over, usually five days after they first appear. It takes one to three weeks from when you were exposed to chickenpox for the spots to start appearing. You'll need to stay away from school, nursery, or work until all the spots have crusted over. You can get a private vaccination to protect against chickenpox. Do you know if your child has received the Meningitis B vaccination? Meningitis B vaccination is not universally offered by the NHS. NHS offers vaccination against the Meningitis ACWY strain (a different strain from B), while Meningitis B vaccination is now only provided to children born

Meningococcal group B bacteria is a serious cause of life-threatening infections, including meningitis and blood poisoning worldwide. Sadly, the risks associated with Meningitis B will get focus when a cluster of cases among young people emerges. Many of those who survive suffer terrible permanent disabilities, such as amputation, brain damage and epilepsy. Would you please take a few minutes to review your child's vaccination records? n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Speeding: a choice that puts others’ lives at risk

H

ELLO to September – and good luck to all of those who are starting or returning to school, college and university. Personally, I still cannot believe that we are almost three quarters of the way through 2021! My team and I continue to gather momentum and I feel well and truly embedded within the role. As I discussed in my last column, the police and crime survey, which closes on September 20, continues to be a focus and I am still calling on local people and communities to tell me what policing issues matter most to them by completing it. The feedback from the survey will help shape my Police and Crime Plan, a legal document that includes various aspects about the policing of the area, how the chief constable will be held to

account and how the PCC will use the money to deliver an effective and efficient service and support other services, such as victim support providers. We’ve had a great response already to the survey, but we want to continue to hear from as many local people, from all walks of life, right up until it closes. The survey is an opportunity for residents and businesses to tell me their views, thoughts and concerns about policing in their villages, towns and cities. As PCC, I am the bridge between local people and the police, and I want as many people as possible to tell me what they want their police service to focus on. The survey takes just 10 minutes to complete and will make a real difference to policing in your communities. You can find it at my website, www.

avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk. Last month, the Avon and Somerset road safety and road policing teams carried out enhanced operations across the area as part of a national speed enforcement campaign. Based on information and footage provided by local people, they targeted repeat offenders and speeding hotspots, including the Stoke Gifford area. They have also been working closely with partners including Community Speedwatch groups and local authorities to find solutions to some specific road safety concerns. Speeding is a choice that puts others’ lives at risk and I want to thank those who comply with speed limits to keep themselves and others safe. I am delighted that the police are listening to local people and working hard to

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford address them by working closely with partners including local authorities, Highways England and the fire services to find solutions to road safety concerns. We all have a role to play in tackling speeding drivers, so do not forget that you can report speeding concerns to the police at www.avonandsomerset.police. uk/report.

n SPORT KEYNSHAM BOWLS CLUB AS we arrive at the tail end of the 2021 bowling season, members look back on what might have happened but did not. While league fixtures against some clubs have been played, the competitiveness has been lost as the decision was made to cancel promotion and relegation with clubs in 2022 starting in the same divisions as they now are. Activity in cup competitions remained and our men played at home to Bloomfield from Bath in the fifth round of the Turnbull Cup. The match remained on a knife edge right to the finish, with a measure being taken after the final wood was bowled on the last rink playing. Bloomfield won the end by one shot and took the match by 76 to 75 shots. Who says bowls isn’t an exciting game? In the Friday Triples, our men

were drawn away to league leaders Avonvale and despite a good win on one of the four rinks, they suffered a heavy defeat on another and lost by five shots. The annual fixture between our men and Frys took place, with Frys being the trophy holders. Frys left Keynsham Park again with the trophy, having won by 75 to 59 shots, despite Keynsham narrowly winning on two of the four rinks.

FRYS BOWLING CLUB Friday 30th July: The 51st Alsop Shield between Frys and Keynsham returned Friday night after a year out, with Frys the current holders. Keynsham hosted the game and pulled out a lead in the early ends, but Frys stayed in touch with rink 1 pulling away. Just after halfway, Keynsham went 10 shots up on rink 2, but Frys then hit 12 shots in 7 ends to pull back the deficit. Rink 1 continued to pull away and with rinks 3 and 4 playing a tight game, it set up a tense finish in the final quarter. However, the game took a twist with rink 1 adding a further 10 shots in their last 6 ends. The other 3 rinks outscored Keynsham with their last 6 ends, seeing Frys wrap up their 3rd Alsop Shield in a row and 6th of the last 8 with a score of 85-69. Scores: Rink 1: 27-9; Rink 2: 18-19; Rink 3: 16-12; Rink 4: 14-19; Frys 85-69 Keynsham. Thursday 29th July: In the league, Frys looked to continue their good form with a visit from Bradley Stoke. A close game turned on the 14th end on all rinks with Frys dropping a combined KEYNSHAM WALKING FOOTBALL Keynsham Walking Football held three successful walking football tournaments in July and August at the AJN Stadium in Keynsham. The three invitation events sanctioned by Somerset FA, for Over 60s, Over 65s and Over 70s attracted teams from across the region: Bracknell, Bournemouth, Cirencester, Clevedon, Crewkerne, Highworth, Odd Down, Salisbury, and Yeovil. The Over 60s competition attracted eight teams who played in groups of four before a semifinal and final. Highworth Town beat the home side on penalties in the final. The Plate Final (for teams finishing 3rd and 4th in their groups) was won by Clevedon Town. The Over 65s event was originally scheduled for July but was postponed because of extremely

Frys returned to our green some three weeks later to play a Bristol and District League fixture, when Keynsham won on all three rinks, with shots totalling 48 to 31, and hence picking up all 10 points. During the month we played host to the Southam United Club from Warwickshire, who stopped in Keynsham on their way home from a tour. Keynsham won on four of the five rinks played with a total

8 shots which turned the game in favour of the visitors. Bradley Stoke would hold on to the lead and win 43-50 with rinks 2 and 3 picking up a useful 4 points for Frys. Scores: Rink 1: 6-25; Rink 2: 13-12; Rink 3: 24-13; Frys 43-50 Bradley Stoke (4-6). Thursday 5th August: Begbrook Green ‘A’ were the hosts for Frys with both clubs in the bottom 3 of the table. A dark night soon turned to rain before trial ends even started. Rink 1 pulled away for Frys, with Begbrook returning the favour on rinks 2 and 3. Frys quickly pulled them back taking the lead at the halfway point. Heavy rain then fell as Begbrook pulled back rink 1 closing the game up dramatically. With the strength of the rain increasing, both sides exchanged shots, which saw Begbrook take a 3 shot lead after 34 ends. The 35th, 36th and 37th ends saw all Frys rinks combine for 4 shots, which proved to be crucial. The heavy rain resulted in the game being declared, with Frys taking a dramatic 32-31 win with all rinks decided by a single shot with Frys taking 8 points from the shortened game. Scores: Rink hot weather. It was eventually played with six teams in a single-league format in August when Keynsham A were victorious with five straight wins. Highworth Town came second, pipping Keynsham B on goal difference. The Over 70s tournament consisted of eight teams in groups of four again. Once again Keynsham A were victorious after a nil-nil draw with Second Chance (from Odd Down) in the final and a penalty shoot-out. Highworth Town won the Plate Trophy by gaining a 3-0 win over Keynsham B. In all 22 teams took part on three separate days with around 200 players playing the beautiful game, but a little slower. The competitions were played in a good spirit and new friends were made and old acquaintances renewed.

shot score of 99-70. As a result of our open day earlier in the year, the ladies have welcomed seven new members, taking their number up to nearly 40. The ladies have joined the new Somerset Ladies County League which plays on Saturdays. They have performed well in cup matches, reaching the quarter finals of the Southey Trophy. Keeping the surroundings of a bowling club plus its buildings in good condition is a timeconsuming and costly exercise. Fortunately we have a dedicated group of men who meet every Monday throughout the year, rain or shine, to keep everything in order, saving the club a great deal of money. In appreciation of their work, one of our generous members decided to give them a treat, and our picture shows them at the Lock Keeper enjoying a drink before tucking into their meal.

1: 10-9; Rink 2: 10-11; Rink 3: 12-11; Frys 32-31 Begbrook Green ‘A’ (8-2). Thursday 12th August: A struggling Ardagh visited Frys having only picked up 2 points in the last 3 games falling behind in the title race. Frys took an early lead with rink 2 starting with two 5’s in their first 3 ends. After a tight start, rink 3 started pulling away extending Frys lead to an unassailable lead in the game and the rink. An average performance on rink 2 saw Ardagh pull back some of the shots and Frys held a 5 shot lead on the penultimate end. A poor end saw Ardagh hold 5 shots, but Frys skip got into the head picking up the shot saving the rink for Frys. Rink 1 had gone 20 shots up, but attacking play from Ardagh saw them close the gap to 7 with 2 ends left. Frys closed the rink out with 3 on the penultimate end. The 72-38 win with 10 points saw Frys jump to 8th in the table with 2 games left. Scores: Rink 1: 30-17; Rink 2: 18-13; Rink 3: 24-8; Frys 72-38 Ardagh (10-0). Frys cup runs came to an end against Bristol St Andrews in the Clarence Davey Plate. A spirited effort fell short 70-80.
