Tragedy inspires Martin's campaign to curb suicides A FORMER football manager from Hanham has launched an initiative aimed at tackling male suicide. Martin Williamson, who managed a team at AEK Boco from 2004 to 2016, was devastated to hear of the death of former player Sean Finnegan. Sean, also of Hanham, was 28 when he took his life in August. The news rocked the footballing community and left many thinking about what could have been done to have stopped Sean's death. Martin himself did much soul searching and came up with the idea of creating drinks mats featuring messages and slogans of support aimed at young males who may be experiencing mental health issues. They also feature advice as well as phone numbers and websites of organisations which can help. Messages include “Some people say they are ok when they are not. Talk to a friend” and “If you are feeling desperate, depressed, sad, lonely, anxious or overwhelmed...you are not alone”. Martin, 52, who has two sons aged 20 and 23, says the drinks Turn to Page 3

Hanham mum sets up new small business fair A MUM of three is using her entrepreneurial skills to help small businesses in the area. Laura Church runs two ventures from home in Hanham in order to juggle life with her three young boys, Dylan, 10, Toby, six, and 10-month-old Archie. The qualified florist has an online Facebook shop, called LJ Flowers and Plants, and also looks after a team of around 60 Avon representatives. Now she has come up with the brainwave of holding a business fayre at Hanham Community Centre in a bid to shine the spotlight on other small enterprises. She hopes members of the public will turn out in force when the fair takes place later this month. Laura, 32, who is married to John, said: “My dream has been to own my own florist shop but with having three boys and the costs involved, it has been challenging. “At the the moment I market my flower business through Facebook and other social media to get my name and reputation out there but competition is tough. As I am running it from home I can keep the costs lower so my customers can have a better deal on flowers and plants.” Laura had been selling her wares at car boot sales, table top sales and summer and winter fairs but found a lack of support from organisers. “Organisers only seem to be interested in themselves so I'm

looking to help individual stall holders by getting their names out there and hopefully generate enough interest and publicity so that they can thrive and make a profit. “Some of the people I have met who run small businesses need this extra income to help pay bills, loans and school costs like dinners and trips. “I think this is a great opportunity for local people who have a talent for cake making, jewellery designs, handmade gifts and so on to show their skills and get their name out there so local people know they can go to somewhere other than the big supermarkets.” Laura reached out to businesses through social media and was inundated with people wanting to take part. “I put out a simple ad saying I was looking for mumpreneurs, dadpreneurs and small business owners and had a fantastic response. I'm now fully booked with 28 stalls. I'm hoping this really takes off and gets the footfall it needs to be a success.” The event takes place at Hanham Community Centre on Saturday February 15 from 10am-1pm. Stalls include handmade gifts and crafts, personalised gifts, food stalls, flowers and plants, jewellery and books. Refreshments will be available. Entry is free and includes a raffle ticket. mats can be placed at sports clubs, bars, pubs, canteens and offices in order to break the taboo surrounding mental health. Orders are already coming in from across the country as news of Martin's initiative spreads, with 100 per cent of all profits going to mental health charities. Martin said: “A lot of people said to me that they saw Sean a couple of days before he died and he was fine. You hear this all the time – people somehow manage to carry on and live a normal life when they're at breaking point. “Mental health is getting to the forefront of the media and news but is that making people talk about it? I don't know. “It's as though they think killing themselves is somehow easier than sharing their problem with somebody. It's mindblowing that someone can be in such a state mentally that they think that's the best thing to do. This really got to me.” Shortly after Sean died, a football game between his club Hanham Athletic and AEK Boco, where he played as a child, went ahead in his memory. “It was quite emotional and got me thinking whether football clubs do enough for their kids,” said Martin. Feeling concerned, Martin then sent a text out to his former under 18s team. “I told them if they ever

One of the drinks mats produced by Martin Wlliamson to spread awareness of the need to be more open about mental health difficulties needed to speak to anyone about any issues they have, I'd like to think they would give me a call. “I thought they would just make light of it but a lot of replies appreciated my text and seemed really heartfelt. I was taken aback and it got me thinking that we don't do enough. “There are 16 or 17 lads who are now aged 21 in my former team and statistically four of those will have some sort of mental health issue in any given year.” Martin has worked in the print industry since he was 16 and, inspired by a photo of a drinks mat posted online by a mental health charity, decided he could use his experience and contacts to do something similar.

After designing two different mats, Martin set up a website, buying the domain name 'Friends Must Talk' for just £3. He is starting to sell them to sports clubs and leagues but has also come up with one aimed at young women as well as a more generic design more suitable to offices and other non-sports related venues. After emailing numerous football leagues, Martin was staggered to hear the number of stories about young men taking their own lives or experiencing mental health issues. “I had someone ring me from a football league in Sussex and he told me that he'd had mental health issues. He ordered 2,500 so he could give 50 out to every club in his league. “I've not spoken to anyone who doesn't think it's a good idea. They aren't expensive 300, say, with postage works out at about £29. Take-up so far is promising but I need to make more people and organisations aware that they are available.” Martin said: “The aim of the drinks mats is to get people talking and make people realise that they aren't the only ones going through this. They could act as a prompt and if they help to save just one life then it will have been worth it.” You can find out more about the drinks mats by visiting www. friendsmusttalk.co.uk or by searching Friends Must Talk on Facebook.

BUSES travelling through east Bristol to South Glos are set to get a lot greener this month. Operator First West of England is introducing a fleet of 27 biomethane-fuelled buses to run on the 42, 42A, 43, 44 and 45 services. The bus company is set to base a fleet of 77 gas-powered buses at its Lawrence Hill depot. The first 10 are already in service on the m3 metrobus service from Emersons Green to the city centre via the ring road. Over the coming months 67 more will be introduced across east Bristol. First says greenhouse gas emissions from the new buses are more than 80% lower than the diesel vehicles they replace while poisonous nitrogen oxide emissions are 95% lower. The move is part of First's efforts to meet Clean Air Zone requirements proposed by the city council which require operators to pay £100 per bus per day to enter the inner city from next year. Lawrence Hill will host the city's biggest permanent biogas filling station. First West of England managing director James Freeman said the new buses would be "part of the solution in helping to clean up the city’s air". The new vehicles have free wi-fi and are fitted with at-seat USB charging facilities.

n NEWS Graham New wants to put up a wedding marquee next to one of his barns. Image: Google Earth

February, 2020

Wedding venue marquee plan PLANS to install a white PVC marquee in the tranquil Hanham Green Belt have provoked fury from campaigners. Graham New wants to turn Bickley Farm, in Abbots Road, into a wedding venue by putting up a 240sq m marquee for six months of the year. But Friends of Hanham Abbots Conservation Area say it would be an eyesore and lead to late-night noise from party revellers. Members argue the proposals will “fundamentally alter” the unique rural nature of Hanham Abbots Conservation Area and say it should be rejected. The marquee had previously been put up without permission but was removed last year following an outcry from locals, including Hanham Abbots Parish Council. Members of the Friends had hoped a planning application submitted last year would be rejected after an officer from

for Green Belt site angers campaigners South Gloucestershire Council described the marquee as “jarring” with its historical setting. However, the application was withdrawn in September in wake of the opposition. Now, following talks between the applicant and South Gloucestershire Council, revised plans were submitted in December. Mr New's agent, Thornburybased Stuart Rackham, says the new scheme “addresses concerns” over the previous application, saying the proposal, which includes 38 parking spaces, is now acceptable and should be granted planning permission. The new scheme features hedging and fencing in a bid to reduce noise as well as the marquee's visual impact. Mr New also now proposes to take the marquee down during the winter months and concentrate on events from April

to September. But the Friends say the revised plans contain little to make the scheme acceptable. Posting their concerns on Facebook, the group said: “The marquee is still large, highly visible (white) and made of light weight material, which opens along one side, so there can be no suitable noise control. It is still the same size so it will significantly impact upon the Conservation Area. “Hedging and fencing have been proposed to reduce the marquee’s impact and noise, but these in themselves will jar with the open fields bounded by drystone walls, which define the Conservation Area to the south east of Bickley Farm.” They go on to say: “Instead of the original eight events presented to the parish council, the owner proposes 26 events during the summer, equivalent to one per weekend! This means that local residents will be

subjected to loud music and the noise of revellers leaving well into the early hours, every weekend between April and September. The peace and tranquillity which drew them to the Conservation Area will be shattered. There is no mention of a cut off time whereas before midnight was proposed. The transport issues remain, as does the environmental impact upon bats, birds and deer, due to light pollution and general increase in human activity at night.” The latest plans have also failed to impress the council's conservation officer Rob Nicholson who says the marquee would still be “visually intrusive” from Abbots Road. “I see little material difference between the proposed scheme and the previous one,” his report said. “The views of the marquee and the resultant harm it has caused to the farmstead can also be considered to fail

to preserve or enhance the character or appearance of the Hanham Abbot Conservation Area as it detracts from its rural, undeveloped character.” But agent Stuart Rackham believes the new plans meet planning guidelines. “This revised proposal has been submitted with a detailed Landscape Plan to ensure that the visual impact of the proposed marquee is minimised. This impact will also be reduced by virtue of it only being in place for half the year. This screening will also help to reduce the visual impact of the metal barn at other times of the year. “There will be no harm to the openness of the Green Belt, nor to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area.” The closing date for objections is January 31. South Gloucestershire Council is expected to make a decision by February 18.

Longwell Green cinema marks 20 years LONGWELL Green's multiplex cinema is celebrating 20 blockbuster years. Vue Longwell Green, then named Warner Village, opened to much fanfare in 2000, bringing the delights of multiplex cinema to east Bristol. Taking central stage at Aspects Leisure Park, the 13-screen cinema quickly became a destination venue for film fans who previously had to travel to Avonmeads, the city centre or Cribbs Causeway to watch the latest movies. The venue has more than 2,500 seats and has seen hundreds of thousands of cinemagoers come through the doors. To mark its 20th birthday, staff invited Cllr Ian Richardson, chairman of Hanham Parish Council, to cut a celebratory cake. Cllr Richardson said: “It was with great pleasure to take part in the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Vue Cinema in Longwell Green. “The cinema has provided hours of entertainment to many during this time and I hope it will carry on doing so for another 20 years.” He was joined by employee Alison Robbins, pictured far right, who has worked

THE founder and first chairman of Hanham and District Greenbelt Society David Reade has died at the age of 87. David was a leading light in the fight against unwanted development on the hills and fields surrounding Hanham. Among many other interests and a distinguished engineering career, David founded Hanham and District Greenbelt Conservation Society in 1981 and was also involved in the early days of Hanham fayre. At that time, the ring-road route was being planned and with early involvement, the society commented on the proposed alternative routes. Along with the local council and elected representatives, David was crucial in ensuring the Hanham Hills were designated as greenbelt land. Current society chairman Alan Jones said: “At times David represented the community at planning inquiries, giving evidence and quizzing eminent planning barristers. He was always well prepared and put forward the case for maintaining the greenbelt diligently and was a match for the trained legal experts. Those who were present said that it was pleasure to see him perform and he held his calm during cross examination.

“He was clearly successful, as Hanham Hills are still intact 40 years on, which is a great and lasting tribute to David.” David had an instrumental involvement with the development at Hanham Hall, establishing a working relationship with developer Barretts as well as the government agency involved. As a tribute to his work, and that of his wife Diane, who died in 2017, a commemorative bench was placed at the eco village. Reade Close, also on the development, was named in his honour. David's son Gidean Reade daughter Jo Tuffery said for the last month David had been in the care home adjoining his flat, with little hope of returning home. Prior to this, he spent two months in hospital. They expressed their thanks to all those who looked after him in the last few months before his death on Tuesday, January 7. David's funeral will take place on Monday February 17 at 12.30pm at Waterside Chapel, Westerleigh Crematorium, Westerleigh Road, Bristol BS37 8RF. The family has requested no flowers but anyone wishing to do so may make a donation to British Heart Foundation.

Nursery visit bridges generation gap

Abbey hp ads AW.qxp_Layout 1 26/03/2019 11:33 Page 1

RESIDENTS at retirement complexes in Hanham and Keynsham have been feeling much younger thanks to regular visits from nursery tots. Men and women at Hanham's Kift Lodge, next to the Common, and Abbeyfield House in Keynsham have been enjoying the company of children at Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-School since September. Each week, nursery staff bring three and four-year-olds along to enjoy a variety of planned activities with residents. Retirement home manager Joleigh Hayward says the visits have introduced a new lease of life into the houses, which are run by housing charity the Abbeyfield Society. Abbeyfield and nursery staff

agree the initiative is benefiting both children and adults. Joleigh said: “Some of the residents don’t get to see their grandchildren as often as they’d like, so the nursery children’s visits are a real tonic, and many of the residents say they feel it’s keeping them young! After the first couple of weeks, it was lovely to see new bonds forming between the generations.” Mama Bear’s team member Ashley Shellard said: “Every week we take different activities that both the children and residents can do together. Since the visits started, we’ve noticed a huge boost in the children’s confidence and self-esteem, and we’re delighted to such receive positive feedback from residents too.”

If you, or a loved one, are just starting to struggle on the stairs, or even feeling isolated in your own home, it’s time to think about a retirement with Abbeyfield. Enjoy a care-free life. Back to drawing board for planning SOUTH Gloucestershire Council is abandoning a blueprint for 105,000 homes across the West of England. Council leader Toby Savage says the authority will formally withdraw from the Joint Spatial Plan at its full council meeting in February. It follows years of costly cross-border collaboration between the four neighbouring unitary authorities, including Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset, which ended in disarray when planning inspectors rejected it last summer. The inspectors highlighted “fundamental concerns” with the joint spatial plan – a document setting out where 105,000 homes would be built by 2036 – and demanded “radical” changes. They admonished the four councils for trying to make the evidence fit into their housing, jobs and infrastructure strategy, rather than being led by it, and

ordered them to go back to the drawing board. The JSP included plans for five new major developments in South Gloucestershire, all of them north of the M4. Earlier this month, North Somerset Council became the first to officially pull the plug on the JSP and instead push ahead with its own local plan. Bath & North East Somerset Council has since also pulled out. Conservative Mr Savage told fellow South Gloucestershire cabinet members at a meeting on January 13: “We will be considering a similar report to North Somerset at the February full council meeting and, it would seem, make that formal decision to withdraw from the JSP process. “We will need to continue working jointly with our neighbouring authorities, not least because of the legal duty to cooperate but also, in the case of Bristol and B&NES, we work

together through the West of England Combined Authority. “In terms of the split between what will sit in any new strategiclevel document and what will sit within our own local plan, that is still to be discussed and decided. “The offer continues to be open through the policy advisory group (PAG) process to ensure opposition members have the opportunity to engage and participate. “We are in the new year and I would hope for a new approach from all members to ensure we are able to work together as we bring forward the next stage of planning for the future of South Gloucestershire and the wider region.” At a council meeting in October, Labour group leader Pat Rooney said her party would no longer take part in crossparty talks through the policy advisory group because “all trust had broken down” with the Tory administration, as a result

of previous decisions arising from PAG discussions. She said Labour would hold separate meetings with council officers. Liberal Democrat group leader Claire Young said her group would need to see the PAG's terms of reference in writing before moving any further forward. A council spokesman said the JSP was “not viable in its current form” and the authority is already drawing up its own local plan. A spokesman said: “We remain committed to working with our three neighbouring West of England councils and the West of England Combined Authority on the best way forward for the region, to positively address its strategic planning needs. “We do know that we need to find space to build homes for the growing number of people of all ages who want to live and work in South Gloucestershire.

blueprint “That demand hasn’t gone away and we have a legal duty to work to meet it. “Our new Local Plan will set out how we plan to meet those needs, as well as for space for employment land and the infrastructure that will support growth and other improvements. “However, we will not be using any new process to simply represent all of the proposals that were looked at through the JSP unchanged. “We want our entire community to be involved in the development of the new Local Plan and we remain committed to plan-led development designed to meet local needs and we will continue to resist speculative applications from developers who do not share our vision to keep South Gloucestershire a great place to live and work.” Bristol City Council is yet to announce a decision on the JSP. A Weca spokesperson said:

“Weca remains committed to working with the four West of England councils on the best way forward for the region to

positively address its strategic planning needs. “Weca and the councils will be jointly commissioning a

refresh of the strategic evidence base.” By Stephen Sumner, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Club told to take down fence A FOOTBALL club in Hanham has been ordered to take a fence down after blocking a path. Metal fencing had been concreted in at Greenbank playing field, home to AEK Boco. The site is managed by the club but owned by South Gloucestershire Council. The council was alerted to the issue by residents who have been at loggerheads with the club over plans to expand facilities to include two 50-space spectator stands, 1.8m fencing around the pitch and 18.2m floodlights. One resident told Hanham and Longwell Green Voice the club had no right to put up fencing without permission from the authority: “There is no planning permission for this and there never has been any permission for any fencing here. “The path is not an official PROW (Public Right of Way) but as we all know AEK Boco cannot construct a fence on the field without at least landlord's permission.” It appears that groundworkers for Bellway Homes, which is building on the site next door, put the fence up on behalf of Boco “as a gesture of goodwill”. A South Gloucestershire Council

spokesperson said: “We have been working with AEK Boco and the police following concerns over anti-social behaviour (ASB), however the issue now appears to be resolved so we have agreed that the fence will be removed to avoid any inconvenience it may cause. We will be closely monitoring the ASB issue so we can act again promptly should it reoccur in the future.” Residents fought against plans to improve facilities describing them as a “mini stadium”. They were defeated last July when a council committee voted to approve the plans. A series of conditions was placed upon the planning permission by councillors, including restricting the height of the fence surrounding the pitch to 1.2m and limiting lighting only to Toolstation Western League matches. The club has appealed against the conditions and is awaiting the outcome. A council spokesperson said it is not yet known when a decision will be made. The council is still to decide whether to grant landlord's permission to the club to enable them to implement the scheme.

Police warn over fraud scams POLICE are asking people with vulnerable family and neighbours to make them aware of two recent telephone scams which have left people being conned out of thousands of pounds. The first involves involves a fraudster claiming to be from online retailer Amazon. The bogus official called the victims on their landline saying they were from Amazon and querying either an issue with a payment or a problem with the victim’s Prime membership. Police say they are aware of three incidents in the Avon and Somerset force area – two of the victims have lost a combined total of almost £15,000. A police spokesperson said: “During the call a pre-recorded message invites the victim to press 1 on their phone to link to an operator. A long conversation follows in which the victim is asked to re-connect to the caller

via a computer or mobile device and then allow Amazon to link to their account. “While they continue to talk to the victim, they ask them to log on to their online banking via the remote device to check whether a refund has been made to their bank. “The caller talks to the victim, distracting them from looking at their device, while money is quickly transferred from their bank, or even an application for a loan made while the banking session is open.” Police say if anyone is suspicious or uncomfortable about a call, they should finish it immediately and call the company who claimed to call you, using their official number and a different phone. The second scam involves fraudsters posing as police officers claiming that the victim’s grandson had been arrested for using a cloned copy of their bank

card, encouraging the victim to confirm their bank card details. In another call they claimed that there was a major investigation into the victim's bank and local post office, involving counterfeit money. The victim was asked to support the investigation by withdrawing cash and checking the serial numbers of the notes. They claimed it was fake cash and said a courier would be sent to collect the counterfeit notes for forensic examination. Beat manager PC Huw Williams said: “One person was scammed out of £5,000 by the heartless fraudsters. “Neither the police nor the banks will ask you for banking details or PIN numbers on the phone. Similarly, they would never send a so-called ‘courier’ to collect bank cards or money.” If you believe you have been scammed contact police on 101, quoting reference 5219299839.

Officers seize £200k haul POLICE have seized more than £200,000 worth of suspected stolen goods from a home in Hanham. Officers attended The Glen overnight between January 23-24 and arrested a man on suspicion of handling stolen goods. They seized around 100 bike frames and parts along with power tools and other items with a total estimated value of around £200,000. Police are currently documenting the recovered items and checking them against police records to identify the original owners. Police say officers are committed to identifying and catching the individuals responsible for burglary.

Come and sing with our own 'Mary Poppins' A MUSICAL director is on the look-out for new members to join an all-female barbershop choir. Mary Williams, who lives in Longwell Green, heads up Avon Harmony A Cappella which has a membership from across the region. She now hopes to expand to enable the choir to keep taking part in singing events for charity. The choir has just completed a bumper year of community singing and supporting local charities where the highlight was performing a Mary Poppins medley in costume in front of an audience of more than 2,500 people. Mary, pictured here as Mary Poppins, is looking for enthusiastic singers to join their Love To Sing annual six-week taster workshops which starts this month. She said: “Avon Harmony are an established choir which has grown by a third in the last two years. We have young people

The choir performed a Mary Poppins medley back in October at the Ladies Association Of Barbershop Singers Convention (LABBS) held in Llandudno who are at university, keen singers in their thirties, forties and fifties, right through to retired ladies. “I get a lot of pleasure from working with motivated ordinary women who enjoy the thrill of singing in harmony with others. The look on their faces when we make a beautiful sound and they go skipping out the door at the

end of the night with a smile on their face warms my heart. “As a choir ran by volunteers, our education, our costumes and running costs are funded by a low monthly affordable fee, donations and concert appearance fees. The non-profit singing group has women aged 18 plus travelling from all over Bristol and beyond, over a wide span of ages and cultures. The Love To Sing taster course costs £20 and starts on Thursday February 6 at 7.30pm at the choir's new rehearsal venue Glenfrome Primary School, Cottisford Road, Eastville, BS5 6NL. n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Chris Skidmore writes for

regular advice surgeries and my constituency office is open to visit each day. For those who do not have my contact details, I can be emailed at chris. skidmore.mp@parliament.uk and telephone 0117 908 1524. I also want to thank the other candidates who took part in the general election - Nicola Bowden Jones, Dine Romero, Joe Evans and Angelika Cowell. I enjoyed taking part in BBC Radio Bristol hustings with them. Standing for election can be a tough commitment and I want to thank them for giving voters a choice in our democracy. Now that we are in a new decade, I want to look to the opportunities ahead for our area. In the past ten years, we’ve seen continued investment in jobs with more people in work than ever before - as well as funding for our towns, with Kingswood securing a £3 million cash injection for the regeneration

of the High Street, including £680k of WECA funding to help stabilise and restore our precious Whitfield Tabernacle building. I want to continue this and hope to see more growth in our living standards thanks to a strong economy and strong local towns. But this also depends on having good transport links which is why I want progress on the M4 link and also better bus services, as well as ensuring our public services are levelled up, so that we see the school funding increases needed. This month, we are introducing a bill ensuring that we see the £33billion rise in NHS funding promised- and I want to see this reflected in increased investment also in our local area. A lot will change in ten years - for myself, I got married and had three children - but I want to ensure that we continue to see positive change so that our local area can be the best it can be.

IRST of all, I’d like to wish everyone a belated Happy New Year. 2020 doesn’t just mark the turning of the calendar – it also marks the start of a new decade. A decade ago, I was preparing to stand for the first time in the general election in May. I didn’t really expect to win, but I was determined to try my best. Four months later, I was surprised when local people gave me the chance to serve our community. Ten years on, I was equally delighted when you re-elected me as your MP, this time with the largest majority I’ve ever had, 11,220, and with over 56 per cent of people voting for me. I am truly honoured and I want to not only thank everyone who had placed their trust in me - I want to say that whoever you voted for, I am here to help you as best I can. I hold

Phone boxes set to go

Can we fix it? Yes, we can ... I AM writing this on a cold crisp morning with clear blue sky and the frost on the grass glistening in the sunlight – absolutely beautiful and so worth looking after. There are some lovely stories emerging – a gentleman carer who is learning to cook so that he doesn’t need to use ready meals with their black plastic containers; a friend who gave me a gift which was wrapped in a pretty material remnant that can be used again and again or waxed and turned into food wrap; a young woman who wrapped all her Christmas presents in recycled brown paper decorated with dried flowers. Her friends and family loved it so much that they are now going to do the same. This is what being a unicycle is all about, being inventive, making changes and sharing them with those around you. Please do share your stories. I promised ZERO WASTE for February. Tom Szaky was born in Hungary. He rightly states that in the natural world there is zero waste and he believes that by changing the way we look at what we make and use we can eliminate waste. Alone he set up Terracycle, an innovative recycling company that has become a global leader in recycling hard-to-recycle materials. He has also written loads of books and won the Independent Publisher Book Award for Most Likely to Save the Planet. An amazing example of how something can grow from

one person sharing his thoughts, ideas and knowledge. Did you know that Terracycle turns crisp packets into garden furniture? Need some inspiration? then you can find Tom Szaky and Terracyle on YouTube. To achieve zero waste will take a change in Government policies and manufacturing processes, but there are also things we can do as individuals. For starters here are just three things we can may be aim for:

THREE phone boxes in Hanham and Longwell Green could be removed. BT is looking at taking away the payphone outside Hanham Common Butchers in Memorial Road after 72 calls were made from there last year. The company also has its sights on the box outside the Maypole in the High Street, despite 161 calls being made from it in 2019. The phone box outside Andrews Estate Agents in Bath Road, Longwell Green could also be axed after it was used 86 times. The three boxes are among eight in South Gloucestershire BT are looking to do away with, saying they are “unnecessary”. Other nearby phone boxes on BT's radar include one in Kenilworth Drive in Willsbridge, and one at Crown Gardens, on the corner of Tower Road North, Warmley. The other three are located in Downend, Bradley Stoke and Severn Beach. The phone boxes are not eligible for BT's 'Adopt a Kiosk' scheme, as this only applies to traditional red boxes. The council says overall use of payphones has declined by over 90 per cent in a decade and the need for payphones for use in emergency situations is diminishing thanks to either 3G or 4G coverage. Anyone wishing to complete a survey can do so on the consultations page of the council website or at a library, by calling 01454 868154, emailing consultation@southglos.gov.uk or writing to Freepost Plus RTXLYHGY-GSYS, South Gloucestershire Council, Corporate Consultation Team, Council Offices, Badminton Road, Yate, Bristol, BS37 5AF. People have until February 13 to respond. The draft decision will be subject to a further public consultation before giving a final decision to BT on March 13.

• Avoid packaging wherever possible but where packaging is needed or unavoidable look for recyclable and sustainable symbols • Be frugal. Take the challenge to see, for example, how long we can make that bottle of shower gel or shampoo last. • Before throwing something away ask ourselves some questions. ‘Can it be repaired?’ ‘Could someone else use it?’ and if the answer to these questions is “no” then ‘Am I disposing of this in a responsible and environmentally friendly way?’ Next month I would like to share a little about how improving our environment can have a direct impact on the health of us earthlings. Please be encouraged – change is happening, so let’s keep moving forward together in our quest to restore balance on our planet. Penny Waller (prwaller29@gmail.com)

n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Evening WI WITH our Christmas meal at Bristol Golf Club and our annual carol concert just happy memories, it was back to business as usual as we moved into a new year. People often think a new year is an opportunity for new beginnings and what better way to think about new beginnings than an excellent and witty talk from a midwife – one that has helped with no less than 2,430 new beginnings! It was a chance meeting that enabled us to engage our speaker, Dorothy Cook, a midwife of 40 years. One of our committee members met Dorothy whilst on a Mediterranean cruise last year and recognised that she would make a wonderful speaker talking about her life and experiences. So, you never know when you might come across a speaker. Dorothy, who now lives in the West Country, has travelled all over the world pursuing her career, delivering babies in such diverse places as Hong Kong and Brazil. But some of her most difficult experiences came in middle eastern countries where conditions were far from ideal nor conducive to midwifery. She described how her profession has changed over the years and how nowadays home births, especially water births, accompanied by soft lighting have become quite popular. Adverse experiences however have dictated that midwives usually insist these take place on the ground floor of buildings for fear of flooding lower floors. Expectant mums now bring

along their personal play-lists to listen to on their iPhones or iPods and one even came in with her taxi driver, insisting that he stay with her throughout the birth. I don’t know who was more scared – her or the taxi driver. I can’t remember anything like this when I had my daughters some 40 years ago! After 40 years’ service and over 2,400 births to her name, Dorothy pointed out that she has still not had one single child named after her. But, with many of the older names coming back into fashion, she still hasn’t given up hope. One amusing thing she told us about names was that the most unusual ones she came across was a set of twins she delivered who were named Armani and Versace – must have been the fashion at the time! She finished by telling us she’s going to continue with the 'new beginnings' as she no intention of giving up quite yet. Members agreed it was a great start to the new year. Dianna Coles

Longwell Green WI SPEED dating! Not what you expect at a WI but this was Longwell Green’s answer to brightening up the post-Christmas period. Well...not exactly dating, perhaps Speed Friending would be a more appropriate title. The idea was that members sat at numbered tables in groups of five and each person in the group was given a number. We then had five or so minutes to chat until a bell was rung and we had to move on. Where you moved to

was dependent on your number so you would either move one or two places forward or one or two places back or stay where you were. Sounds complicated? Yes, many of us did find it complicated and lots of people tried to join the wrong group but this just added to the hilarity of the evening. The whole idea was to get people talking to those they wouldn’t normally and it was extremely successful in this. If the noise level was anything to go by everyone enjoyed themselves immensely! At our February meeting we will hear all about ‘Reducing Food Waste’ from Sarah Adler, something very close to our hearts as less food waste will also mean less money wasted. Upcoming events include a quiz night, a visit to Fonthill Garden Centre for a demonstration and a trip to the Brecon Beacons. Our members now participate in three book clubs, a craft club, a walking group, a drama group, a skittles group, a knitting group and regular social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI meet on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always welcome. If you are interested in visiting us please get in touch by email at longwellwi@gmail.com or telephone 0117 986 4782. Sandra Hill

lovely buffet lunch which each of the members had provided, by bringing along a wonderful variety of savoury and sweet dishes. This was enjoyed together, with an assortment of beverages (to suit all). To say the cupboard was bare when we had finished would be an understatement as this was exactly how the tables looked. The afternoon was further enhanced by the welcome visit of the Stephen Price duo made up of Stephen and Pete, playing banjo and guitar respectively. Stephen, a self-taught musician (playing by ear), told us the history of the banjo and demonstrated a few different types he had brought with him. We were surprised at the varying sounds made by each of these banjos. Pete accompanied Stephen on guitar while he played one of his banjos and sang, telling a few little stories and jokes in between. A few of the songs he had written himself and one he had written to help raise funds for a local hospital MRI scanner. This was in the time when MRIs first became available, they were so expensive hospitals couldn't get them without the help of the public. This particular song was very impressive as in the lyrics he had managed to incorporate many medical terms. Not only would they be hard to repeat normally, but, incorporated into the song and set to music, was no mean achievement. Very clever! Our next meeting will be held at the Hanham Community Centre (second Monday in the month) on February 10 at 1.30pm. We shall be learning how exercise can change llives with our armchair yoga session. New members are always welcome and if you are interested in visiting us, please get in touch by telephone, with Liz (our president) on 0117 961 1583. Ann Baulch

£19,000 for good causes THE CO-OP in Memorial Road, Hanham is among stores in Bristol and Somerset that have helped raise £19,000 for good causes. Every year, each convenience store that is part of Southern Co-op partners with a local cause chosen by colleagues who then have a year to hold fundraising events in aid of the cause. In 2019, six different causes were chosen by the Bristol and Somerset stores including Children's Hospice South West, Clevedon and District Foodbank, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, The Brainwave Centre, The Royal Marines Charity, and Vallis First School. Jessica Hughes, community investment manager at Southern Co-op, said: “Every penny has been raised by colleagues and customers who want to help the store's current charity partner. “We are so proud of our colleagues who work tirelessly to give back to these causes. ”

Storms bring down 800-year-old yew CHURCH-GOERS and residents are mourning an 800-year-old yew tree which came down in recent bad weather. The tree, at St Anne's Church in Oldland Common, caused damage to a wall as well as several graves. The church announced the news on January 16 via its Facebook page: “Sad day for St Anne's as we lose our ancient Yew and a section of the wall - quite dramatic though! “Thank God it came down when no one was around - about an hour after Cake 'n' Shake and an hour or two before school was out. We are so grateful to the local community who are responding with offers of help.” Comments have since been

posted expressing sadness at the loss of the tree after surviving through centuries. Jaq Slade Davis said: “This beautiful yew featured in David Wright's wonderful history talk about St Anne's Church, Oldland and the churchyard, that I had the pleasure of attending back in May 2019. “I'm so sad to see, after standing so strong for centuries, it is no more. It even appears in the old sketch of the previous

Roundabout could be the answer I VERY much agree with Hazel Szots reply about Cllr Bernard Jackson’s idea of a roundabout at the junction of Whittucks Rd/ Highfield Ave. The existing traffic lights regulate the constant flow of traffic fairly whereas a roundabout would not. On busy days even now traffic can be nose to tail as far back as Hanham Surgery, imagine the fumes for residents on this busy road, you would only be moving the situation to another area not solving it! The mind boggles at the cost to tax payers and the disruption to the public if this silly suggestion was ever improvised. My rethink is “if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it”. Mr T Isom

Man injured after flat fall POLICE have confirmed a man who was seriously injured after falling from a flat in Staple Hill jumped rather than was pushed. Officers were called at 6.40pm on Christmas Day to the block in Soundwell Road. A 47-year-old man was taken to hospital with multiple fractures while another man, also aged 47, was arrested in connection with the incident. A police spokesperson said no further action is being taken. “Investigations have concluded that the man was not pushed, he jumped. He suffered multiple fractures to his spine, pelvis and wrists and remains in hospital. The arrested man has been released.”

Pre-school's fayre raises £660 LITTLE Ivy is delighted with her gift from Santa who popped in to Christchurch Preschool in Hanham during his hectic schedule in December. Their festive fayre proved a huge success, raising a grand total of £660. Chair Katie Gingell said: “Children were able to visit Santa in his grotto, take a ride in his sleigh, have their faces painted and have a go on the Christmas jar tombola. “The Christchurch Pre-school committee works hard every year to put on these events to raise money for fantastic resources for the children. Thank you to the parents also for their donations and contributions.” The pre-school's next event is their Ladies Pamper Evening. Now in its third year, the event always proves popular with members of the local community. It takes place on Saturday March 7 from 7-9.45pm at the church hall. Mini treatments include nails, massages and makeovers. There is also a raffle, beauty tombola and wine. Contact Katie for more details at christchurchpreschooltrustees@gmail.com or search for the event on Facebook.

n NEWS

Have a say on social care plans A CONSULTATION has been launched to hear residents’ views on possible changes to the charges paid by people who fund their own social care because they have more than £23,250 in savings. The changes are proposed in the wake of increasing demand for support, with South Gloucestershire Council spending £100 million on adult social care each year. The changes would replace three price bands for day care with a single cost and introduce an arrangement fee and annual charge for those who can arrange their care, but who request the council does this for them. The council says there would be no changes to the eligibility for care support; the changes would not impact someone living in a care home; and those who are already receiving a care support package will continue to do so under the existing arrangements. Around 100 new self-funding residents each year would be affected by the proposals, but those already receiving a service will not be affected while that continues. If approved, the new arrangements would come into effect on June 1, 2020. The consultation will run until March 17, 2020. People can take part online at www. consultations.southglos.gov. uk/consult.ti/Fees2020 or by completing a paper survey. Responses should be sent to Freepost Plus RTXL-YHGYGSYS, South Gloucestershire Council, Corporate Research & Consultation Team, Council offices, Badminton Road, Yate, BRISTOL, BS37 5AF.
