Hanham Woods Academy earns a Good from Ofsted THE head of Hanham Woods Academy has welcomed the news that the school has now been judged 'Good' by education watchdog Ofsted. Principal Steve Kneller says the recent ruling is testament to the hard work put in by staff and to the efforts made by students to improve their grades. He has pledged to continue to strive for further improvements to achieve even greater success in the future. The academy, which has 802 students, had been placed in special measures after an 'Inadequate' rating in 2017. This prompted Cabot Learning Federation, which manages the academy, to take action to improve standards. A recent visit by government inspectors has now seen the academy leap two grades from the 2017 judgement, a rare achievement in schools across the country. Mr Kneller, who always insisted the academy could turn around, said: “This judgement is testament to the hard work and dedication of staff, both teaching and non-teaching at Hanham Woods Academy. Hit and run appeal POLICE are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to an incident where a store security guard was run over as he attempted to stop a suspected shoplifter. It happened on Church Road in St George on Thursday December 5 at around 9.30pm. A black Audi drove over a man in his 20s who had fallen in the road before leaving the scene. The victim, a security guard working for the Co-op, had been attempting to detain a suspected shoplifter when he fell. He received significant injuries including breaks to his ribs and arm and needed hospital treatment. The car has since been recovered and a 43-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the incident. Church Road was closed for more than 12 hours after the incident as investigators examined the scene of the incident. Traffic, including bus

services which use the A420 to link the city centre with Kingswood and Hanham, was diverted. Detective Inspector James Wasiak said: “This incident could’ve been much worse and the victim is extremely lucky he escaped with the injuries he did. “As part of our inquiry specialist crime scene investigators have examined the scene and I’d like to thank the public for their patience while we closed the road to do this. “Officers also continue to review CCTV footage from the area and we will soon be questioning the arrested woman about the incident.” He added: “We’re also keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident who hasn’t yet spoken to us as well as any motorists who may have dashcam of the Church Road area around the time.” If you can help, please call 101 and provide the call handler with the reference 5219281353.

Artist Harrison, 13, is a 'child prodigy' A TEENAGER is already making waves in the art world – at the tender age of 13. Harrison Savage has been described as a “child prodigy” by professional artist Vincent Brown who runs Artime gallery and art centre in Hanham High Street. Harrison is one of many of Vincent's students showcasing their work at an exhibition at the gallery. Within the first hour of the show, which opened on December 14, the Hanham Woods Academy student had sold three of his four paintings. Vincent said: “Harrison paints in acrylics and does a bit of everything, including people portraits and animal portraits. For 13 years of age, he is incredible. I believe he will be famous one day. He is so talented – I think he's a child prodigy. “He's been with us for over a year and I was shocked when I first saw what he was capable of. The rate at which his art is improving is phenomenal. If I compare him to myself, a professional artist, he is miles ahead of where I was at that age.”

A total of 100 pieces are on display from artists aged from 13 to late 70s. Sixteen year-old Izatt Shortman, another Hanham Woods Academy student, also features in the show, but as his paintings were about to be used for his GCSE art exam he wasn’t allowed to sell them. Izatt is planning to pursue an art career and has been offered a place at City of Bath College to study art and design, the same place where his tutor Vincent began his studies. Vincent said: “He's been with us ever since we first started and his work has come on leaps and bounds. It's nice that he's going on to follow in my footsteps at Bath college. He's really talented and has already got his own voice in painting.” Another one of the most striking works

Harrison Savage at the exhibition in the show is by Hanham resident Steve Peacock who at 70 has just discovered a talent for sculpture. “I met Steve while I was cleaning the windows of my shop! said Vincent. “The amazing thing about Steve is that he's in his 70s and this is the first sculpture he has ever done, and it is incredible. To find out at 70 you've always had this talent is amazing.” The exhibition will run until January 11 and there is a public vote for visitors to the gallery to select the 2019 winner of the public choice art award trophy. Entry is free and all are welcome to drop in to have a look. See www.arti.me.uk for details.

£62,000 raised in memory of Paul

AEK Boco chairman John Winter and Paul's father John Withey with a certificate from Children's Hospice South West

QUALITY KITCHEN MAKEOVERS BY LOCAL PROFESSIONALS • Excellent reputation • From simple door replacements to fully fitted kitchens

A HANHAM football club has helped raise £62,000 in honour of member Paul Withey who died during a charity bike ride. Paul was 42 when he had a heart attack while taking part in the 75k St Peter's Hospice Tour de Bristol in 2016. As youth coach, father-of-two Paul had been a dedicated member of Greenbank Road-based AEK Boco, developing the skills of young footballers. His team were regular winners of the Hanham Minor League and Avon Youth League. Following his death on April 2, 2016 Boco teamed up with Paul's employer, Clevedon-based Glide (formerly CableCom), to raise just over £61,900 for Children's Hospice South West, a charity Paul had supported by taking part in runs and cycle rides. The two organisations raised money

by hosting football matches and charity evenings as well online. AEK Boco club chairman John Winter said: “Paul was a very well respected and loved member of our club and we wanted to continue his good work helping the hospice. All of the events we have hosted have been incredibly well supported and the generosity of club members has been incredible.” Frances Kenneally, community fundraiser at Children's Hospice South West, said: “We are very grateful for the funds raised in memory of Paul Withey. The local hospice, Charlton Farm in North Somerset, aims to help and support families who face the emotional and physical strain of caring for children who, sadly, are not expected to live into adulthood. Donations from the community are vital to sustain the services we offer to families."

Caring club's aid for food bank THE donation to Children's Hospice South West is not the only good work members of AEK Boco have been up to. Recently the club hosted two three-hour sessions at the Greenbank Road club where members of the club and community could pop along and donate food items to be parcelled up and given to foodbanks and the homeless this Christmas. The project was overseen by Don Russell, club vice chairman and head of social and fundraising, and volunteers Louise Longhurst and Theresa Coles. At the end of the sessions, the club counted 44 boxes crammed with food including tinned potatoes, ham and chicken, soups, chocolate, Christmas cakes, selection boxes, fruit juice, biscuits, longlife milk, jams and custard. There were also toiletry items including shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes. The items were then taken to the Trussell Trust in Stapleton Road ready to be distributed to good causes. Don was inspired after watching a TV programme. He said: “It was about someone who was homeless in Glasgow who had come out of the army six months before but couldn't find a job and ended up on the streets. That person died in a car park and I thought 'We can't let this happen – we must

do something'.” Don said he was staggered by how many people came to the club to make donations. “The response was amazing. People just kept coming through the doors – young, middle aged, old people. One pensioner came in with her two grandchildren and was explaining to them how lucky they were to have what they have as there are people who are living on the streets who can't afford these things. We also had a box of food from Warmley Rangers FC who saw the appeal on Facebook. “We had 44 boxes after the sessions but people have been in since to drop bags of food off so we ended up with even more. “I was pleasantly surprised by how much was donated but people amaze you sometimes. Every one of our teams gave something. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated, it's really appreciated. We want to start doing this every year and potentially it could get even bigger.” Boco also raised £890 after hosting a Christmas party at Century's on November 23. They sold 220 tickets for the event which featured a Lionel Richie tribute act. The club wants to put the money towards a defibrillator at the clubhouse which can be accessed by the community as well as members of the club.

n GENERAL ELECTION

Tory majority in Kingswood tops 11,000 CHRIS Skidmore has kept hold of his Kingswood seat at the general election, with a Conservative majority of 11,220. His win ensures all three South Gloucestershire constituencies - which also include Filton and Bradley Stoke and Thornbury and Yate remain true blue. The Conservative MP received 27,712 votes – 56 per cent, which is about one per cent higher than two years ago – ahead of Labour’s second-placed Nicola Bowden-Jones, a Bristol city councillor, on 16,492. Her share amounted to 33 per cent which is seven per cent lower than in 2017. Lib Dem candidate Dine Romero, who is leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, saw her party’s votes double to 3,421, about seven per cent. The Greens’ Joseph Evans polled 1,200 (two per cent) and Animal Welfare Party’s Angelika Cowell received 489 votes, or one per cent.

Mr Skidmore, whose constituency office is in Hanham High Street, said: “It has been a remarkable night for the Conservative Party nationally and also in South Gloucestershire. “I cannot explain to you how great a privilege it is to represent

an area that I grew up in. “We have a number of issues that we will need to respond to nationally. “People told me they wanted to see Brexit done but they also wanted a party that was best to lead our country. “I would like to thank the

candidates who put up a very fair fight. “I know how difficult it is to be candidates at the general election, there is a lot of pressure on you. “It is testament to South Gloucestershire that we had a clean fight.” The turnout was 72 per cent and 145 ballot papers were rejected. The national picture saw the Conservative Party returned to government with 365 seats – a gain of 47, giving them an 80seat majority. The election was disastrous for Labour, who lost 59 seats and now have 203 MPs in Westminster. The Lib Dems lost one seat – the leader Jo Swinson was ousted from East Dunbartonshire by the SNP's Amy Callaghan by 149 votes. The party now has 11 seats. The SNP had a buoyant night, gaining 13 seats to give them a total of 48. The DUP hold eight, down two.

Double celebration for MP Chris NEWLY elected MP Chris Skidmore has another reason to celebrate – he's just welcomed his third child. Ottilie Florence Skidmore was born on Thursday November 21 at 6.19pm, weighing 6lbs and 7oz. She was eight days overdue. Little Ottilie was three weeks old on December 12 - election day. The Kingswood Conservative MP, who recently marked his fifth wedding anniversary to wife Lydia,

Her sister Clemmie and brother Henry are also delighted to have a little sister. I took some time off the election trail to spend it with my family - it’s certainly a new challenge getting used to three children five and under! It’s an amazing time despite the lack of sleep.”

Hanham Woods Academy From page 1 “The support of Cabot Learning Federation has been invaluable over the last two years and I am also very grateful for the loyalty and support shown by parents throughout our journey to 'Good'. “Most of all however this judgement is a reflection of our amazing students of whom I am so proud and they can now confidently say they attend a ‘Good’ academy. “The outcome of the inspection is a reflection of the culture and ethos we have established at Hanham Woods Academy. We will not become complacent however and will work tirelessly to improve the academy further and achieve even greater success in the future.” Four Ofsted inspectors visited the Memorial Road school for two days in November and found a very different school to the one two years ago. Their report said: “Pupils are proud of how their school has improved over the last two years. They enjoy coming to school now. They feel safe and they know that behaviour in their lessons will be good.” On leadership they noted: “Parents recognise that the headteacher has led a revival in the school’s fortunes. Because of the hard work of leaders and teachers, pupils are reaching standards that compare well with those in other schools. This is because teachers ask more of pupils and push them to reach their potential. Teachers check on what pupils understand and can remember regularly. This helps them to set the right work.” There was also praise for the academy's special educational needs provision: “The school welcomes pupils from all backgrounds and abilities. Leaders know that some will need extra help to succeed and they do their best to provide it. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are well supported. Pupils feel cared for by teachers. Pupils get on with each other; the school feels a friendly community.” They continued: “Teachers make sure that pupils have a

Principal Steve Kneller and his students are looking forward to a brighter future after years of uncertainty wide range of extra opportunities to enjoy, and from which they learn. Many pupils take part in the wide range of sports and arts clubs that teachers offer. The school has a proud history of sporting success.” The report also recognised pupil behaviour: “Pupils are well behaved in lessons. They listen to the teacher and they get on with their work. Pupils say how much easier it is to learn now that classes are well behaved.” Inspectors remarked that students are polite and relationships between pupils and teachers are warm. “Pupils believe they are well cared for and that there is always someone to whom they can go if they have a problem,” the document stated. Inspectors say a new curriculum put in place has stretched students and is making them think, remarking that students in Year 10 are studying maths at a level that would have been beyond them until recently. The report ruled that safeguarding at the school was effective with a “skilful and dedicated” team of staff keeping students safe. It also acknowledgement the role of Cabot Learning Federation in making sure the academy went from strength to strength: “The multi-academy trust (MAT) that sponsors the school has played a significant role in challenging and supporting school leaders. The MAT leaders make sure the curriculum is appropriate. They ensure that staff are given the

training they need to deliver it.” Steve Taylor, CEO of Cabot Learning Federation, said: “There are few schools that are able to go from special measures to 'Good' in just two years. It takes a special

New era for The Littlest Rescue charity AFTER more than a decade at the helm of the successful east Bristol animal charity The Littlest Rescue, Bev Taylor has decided to call it a day. Now in her sixties, Bev says the job had become allconsuming, although she has loved every minute of it. Running the sanctuary and rehoming service from her home in Staple Hill, Bev could never entirely switch off and says it is time to hand over the reins. The Littlest Rescue will become an umbrella organisation, with the job of looking after guinea pigs going to Little Wheekers, a small self-funded rescue based on the outskirts of Bristol. Supporting this will be 25-year-old Brittany Roberts who will run B's Rescue and Sanctuary from her home in Kingswood, looking after rabbits. Further help will come from 17-year-old George Sheppard who runs Shepp's Rescue from his parents' home in Fishponds. George, who is studying animal care at SGS College, already looks after a variety of animals including chickens, rabbits, fish and reptiles. Both Brittany and George came to Bev as volunteers and share her love for animals. Bev, however, won't be giving up entirely, turning her attention to looking after injured pigeons and boarding rabbits and guinea pigs, a service she has always offered. She will also continue with

Bowing out: Bev Taylor, of The Littlest Rescue her work visiting care homes where her animals are used as therapy. Bev said: “The rescue will still be active – just not from my premises. Everything will be under the umbrella of the Littlest Rescue but based in slightly different areas.” Bev started rescuing animals in 1995, later opening Noah's Ark in Westbourne Road, Downend. The base took in a variety of animals – including rats. She also operated Pet Search aimed a reuniting owners with their lost pets. “This was before social media came along with its lost and found pages. We kept a register of lost and found pets and had an office where the phone never stopped ringing.”

The Littlest Rescue started when Noah's Ark ground to a halt in 2005 following a change of ownership. “It was 10 years of total dedication but the new owner, who said they were going to take it from strength to strength, sadly managed to close it within 18 months. At that point people were finding me to ask about rescued animals so I thought I'd better start again, so I did but this time from my home.” Visitors to her base can instantly tell Bev has a genuine love for animals. She is supported by an army of volunteers – vet runners, tip runners and cleaners, to name but a few. “They all share one thing – a love for animals and without

their help the Littlest Rescue would not be what it is today,” Bev said. It has been her life's work but now she feels the time is right to ease up. “I'm 64 now and you do get burnt out working in rescue. The Littlest Rescue is now way too big for me to run from my garden.” Bev has always been community focussed: “I don't just do what I do for the animals; I do it for the community. I have people with learning difficulties and students volunteering here. It does mean your home isn't your home any more though you have people running in and out to go to the loo! It's come to the point where the Littlest Rescue needs to be split in the hope it can carry on growing. “There's a lot of work which goes into running a rescue, it's a full time job. You have health and safety issues and you have to fundraise to keep it going. I'd like to have a bit more relaxation and more holidays – you don't get many holidays when you run a rescue. “Brittany and George are a lot younger and have a lot of energy. I feel confident that between the three rescues the Littlest Rescue is in good hands. “I've been doing it for so long that it's going to be hard which is why I'm carrying on with pigeons and boarding rabbits and guinea pigs, otherwise I'd miss it too much. I've got to have animals in my life.”

Festive cheer at Hanham Fair FAMILIES in Hanham were full of festive cheer when they came out in force to support the area's Christmas fair. Hundreds of people weaved their way through local street to reach the High Street where all the action was. The road was closed off to vehicles and in its place were stalls, children's rides, games and street food. One of the main attractions was Santa who set up his grotto, with the help of his helper elf, at the newly opened Glam Squad. Entertainment came courtesy of the Crofts End Silver Band and Kingswood Community Choir. Hanham Methodist Church invited visitors to come and see a display of more than 10 Christmas trees and hosted community carol singing and craft activities for children. The event was organised by Hanham Business and Community Partnership to coincide with Small Business Saturday, a national initiative to persuade people to shop locally. Eclectic Gift Shop owner Nicola Bartlett, a member of the partnership, said: “The Christmas fair was a real hit with hundreds of families having fun on the High Street. Events like these are wonderful – they bring the community together and many of our customers have said they had a lovely time, which is brilliant to hear. “Events like these are also important for small businesses on the High Street because they bring new people to the area and holding it on Small Business Saturday means that people are thinking about where they are spending their money.”

Schools receive boost for PlayPods TWO schools in Hanham have been given a £500 donation to encourage them to let their imaginations go wild. Children from Samuel White's infants and Hanham Abbots juniors were given the welcome cash boost by McCarthy and Stone, the developer behind the Magpie Court Retirement Living Plus development in Hanham. The much-needed contribution has helped fund a Scrapstore PlayPod, which aids in developing children’s imagination. The PlayPod provides a range of scrap materials, such as cardboard tubes, tyres and crates, and inspires children to release their creativity, as well as helping them socialise with their peers. The donation for the Scrapstore PlayPod was organised by Friends of Hanham Primary Federation, which supports the two schools by holding a number of fundraising events, such as coffee mornings and film nights. McCarthy and Stone’s sales consultant at Magpie Court, Alison Peacock, presented a cheque for £500 to Sally Britton, chairperson of the Friends, Gabby Howells, head teacher at Samuel White’s and Matthew Norcott, head of Hanham Abbots. Mrs Howells said: “We are

very grateful to McCarthy and Stone for its generous donation. We chose to install a Scrapstore PlayPod at our school as we wanted to take learning through interactive play out into the playground. “The PlayPod will help children become more inventive and creative, which will in turn

help them in later life, so we can’t thank the team at McCarthy and Stone enough.” Geoff Bates, head of marketing at McCarthy and Stone South, added: “We seek to create a positive legacy in the communities in which we build. “The teams at Samuel White’s infant and Hanham Abbots

junior schools recognise the importance of encouraging all aspects of children’s development, so it was an absolute pleasure to present this donation. The team at McCarthy and Stone’s Magpie Court development wishes the schools every success in the future.”

Knife-point robbery in St George shop STAFF at a convenience store in St George were left shaken after a knife-point robbery. It happened at a shop in Two Mile Hill just after 6am on Monday December 2 when two men entered the shop and one produced a knife, described as a cleaver. The assailants, who both had their faces covered, threatened two women staff members and emptied the tills before making off on foot towards St George. The man with the knife was described as white, 5ft 6 or 5ft 7ins tall, and of stocky build. He wore a dark blue boiler suit, grey gloves, a black balaclava or snood and a black beanie hat. The other man was also white, about 5ft 10ins tall, and of thin build. He wore grey jogging trousers, a dark waterproof jacket, a black balaclava, snood or scarf and black gloves. He carried a rucksack. Both men were said to have Bristolian accents. Police say one was hurt in the incident but the store staff were very shaken and distressed. Why we are challenging perceptions of old age

Age Proud Bristol is an awareness campaign that challenges perceptions of older people in Bristol and encourages people to feel proud of their age. The World Health Organisation has described ageism as “the last form of acceptable discrimination” and according to research carried out by SunLife in 2019, 68% of over 50s in the UK say that ageism in everyday life has made them feel less valued. Age Proud Bristol aims to challenge this and encourage everyone over 50 to feel Age Proud. The campaign is run by Bristol Ageing Better (BAB) and has gathered the views of a variety of inspirational people from across Bristol about their experiences and advice regarding later life. For this article, we spoke to Judith Brown (81), Bristol Older People Forum’s Ambassador. Judith has always had an interest in campaigning, including for women’s rights, disability rights, gay rights, and more, so it is perhaps not surprising that her

up there were expectations placed on what women could and couldn’t do, but now she can follow her interests fully. Judith’s advice for people of any age is to “Be yourself. Don’t let anybody put you down. If there is something you feel you want to say, you should say it.” Women are often socialised to be more self-conscious of their age and physical appearance.

Whilst a man might be described as a ‘silver fox’ when his hair turns grey, women are described in less appealing terms, suggesting that a woman’s worth is measured by her age and appearance. Judith argues that people shouldn’t feel limited by stereotypes. “You hear older women say, ‘Oh I can’t wear that dress, it’s too young.’ Rubbish! We should accept people as they are and demonstrate how wrong the stereotypes are.” Many people have outdated perceptions of what later life will look like, whereas the reality is that we are all individuals with different experiences and knowledge and that doesn’t change when we reach our 50s and beyond. This is the first in a series of three articles inspired by older people based in Bristol. Football violence: man jailed A HANHAM man is among the 13 men who have been jailed for his part in a violent disorder which happened on a Bristol street after an England World Cup group stage win. Kevin Bennett, 31, was jailed for four months for his part in the “major disorder” after England beat Panama 6-1 this summer. Following the match, at about 3.15pm on Sunday June 24, violence broke out in Park Street, with tables and other furniture thrown and several of the men involved suffering injuries. One had a broken leg while another was knocked unconscious. The incident was witnessed by families with children and other innocent bystanders. Witnesses told police: “[I] found it distressing to watch that level of violence in real life, watching people get hurt and bleeding in the street.” “What I was seeing really

disturbed me. I felt terrified … this was a vicious attack and there was a lot of hate in the atmosphere.” Defendants have all appeared before District Judge Lambert at Bristol Crown Court for sentencing for affray. Judge Lambert described the incident as “major disorder” which “engendered terror and distress”. He told the defendants only custodial sentences were suitable “however small a part people played”. Three others were given suspended sentences. Among the others who received prison sentences were Lee James, 33, of Soundwell, who was jailed for four months and Darren Knowles, 42, of Fishponds, who was jailed for three months and issued with a six-year Football Banning Order (FBO). Daniel Poole, 28, of Kingswood, was handed a twomonth prison term suspended

for two years with a 150-hour unpaid work requirement and issued with a three-year FBO. Avon and Somerset Police's head of operations superintendent Rhys Hughes said: “This incident of violent disorder was quickly brought under control on the arrival of police officers. However those few minutes were enough to put many of those enjoying a Sunday afternoon in the city in fear of being injured. “The effects of these men's actions include damage to property, a cost to the public purse in bringing these prosecutions and financial losses to nearby businesses as their customers fled. This type of violence has absolutely no place in our society. I welcome these custodial sentences and hope they send a clear message to anyone involved in footballrelated violence that it simply will not be tolerated in Bristol.”

Kingswood pools are getting a revamp KINGSWOOD Active Lifestyle Centre is refurbishing both its swimming pools following the successful renovation of its diving boards earlier this year. The pool closed on December 5 to allow essential maintenance work to reline the pools to extend their lifespan. As part of the project, poolside areas will also be refreshed and redecorated in time for its reopening on Thursday January 2. The refurbishment project, aimed at extending the pools' lifespan for years to come, is being carried out by Circadian Trust, a not-for-profit organisation which reinvests profits back into local Active Lifestyle centres. In recent years, the organisation has overseen major redevelopment projects in Bradley Stoke and Longwell Green, and an extensive pool refurbishment in Yate last year. Centre manager Martyn Hinam said: “It’s a very exciting time for us at Kingswood and I am delighted that we are reinvesting in our swimming pools to extend their lifespan for years to come. Mr Hinam was praised for overturning the rule after conducting an investigation, finding there was no reason why mums shouldn't be allowed

to feed their children where they liked. He also purchased a sofa for mums who don't want to breastfeed in the pool to have somewhere comfortable to sit.

The policy change was implemented in all of the five lifestyle centres operated across South Gloucestershire by Circadian Trust.

St Monica Trust boosts local causes SEVEN good causes are reaping the benefits of a share of £100,000 to carry on the great work they are doing. St Monica Trust’s Community Impact Team has awarded funds of between £3,220 and £20,000 to groups including Bristol and Avon Chinese Women’s Group, Bristol Poverty Action Group, Life Cycle, North Bristol Advice Centre, Southern Brooks and Way Out West. The funding supports established projects providing vital services for older people which are already making a difference in their local communities, rather than funding start-up projects. Community Connections manager Debbie Wills said: “We think we’ve chosen a broad range of organisations who are all providing vital services for older people across the south west. This includes helping older people to access welfare services, encouraging isolated older people to engage with social activities and funding a community choir.” Organisations who improve the lives of older people were invited to apply for funding to St Monica Trust’s Community Impact Team in October. Funding of up to a maximum of £20,000 was then awarded to organisations who are working to improve the lives of individuals aged 55+. One of the organisations awarded the maximum grant of £20,000 is the Centre for Sustainable Energy. The charity provides energy advice and

Older people are among those whose health is most at risk from the harmful effects of living in a cold home. Centre for Sustainable Energy’s chief executive, Simon Roberts OBE, said: “Older people are one of the most vulnerable groups during the cold weather, particularly if their home isn’t very energy efficient or they are

IME just seems to evaporate and here we are hurtling towards a new year probably wondering what on earth will happen during the next 12 months. What are your hopes and dreams for 2020? Over the last 12 months, amidst the chaos of life, I have seen many little glimmers of hope; people making a difference and feeling empowered to influence what happens to the environment in our neighbourhoods, in our country and in our world. My dream is to see this grow, to see communities and then nations coming together to tackle global warming. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed when we hear about melting icecaps, the destruction of rain forests and the suffering caused to people and animals by the effects of global warming. This is where governments need to act on behalf of us all. We can however do our bit by letting our local MP know where we stand on environmental issues. So my plan for 2020 is to look at where I can make more changes and tackle one area each month. I will share these with you as we go along. January ‘Recycling’; February ‘Zero waste’. Just a little update story: The eco reps at Longwell Green Primary School are doing really well looking at recycling. At their recent Christmas fair they set up some recycling facilities for cans, plastic, cardboard, plastic straws and paper. Three large bags that would otherwise have gone into landfill waste went off to be recycled. Well done to all you eco warriors at Longwell Green primary and also to those in all the other schools in the area. n AROUND THE WIs Hanham Evening WI ANOTHER year gone and another AGM to give us a chance to reflect on what has proved to be a highly successful year of events, meetings and memorable moments. How could we forget following in the footsteps of royalty at the Bristol Old Vic or reliving the lives and times of the two Ronnies through our speaker in March. We looked for Aiden Turner aka Poldark at Chavenage, enjoyed showtime in “Las Vegas” and sang along with an outrageous male voice choir. A good year indeed. With normal business completed, the meeting was then treated to a short talk by Charlotte Chappell from the charity Nextlink. She told us a little about how the charity runs safe houses for women who are experiencing abuse and want somewhere safe away from her abuser. Prior to the meeting members had been encouraged to bring along items for the charity and once again their generosity came to the fore. Donations included toiletries, "girlie things", sweets and chocolates, which could be made into gifts for the women at Christmas. Charlotte was very pleased to accept these on behalf of the charity. The annual autumn fayre in October saw the hardy folk of Hanham, and beyond, dodge heavy rainstorms to support and enjoy the event. The fayre attracted some thirty stalls selling quality items including arts and crafts, ornaments, paintings and Christmas items, all coming together to make the day a tremendous success. The event was very well supported and people were able to take advantage of some early Christmas shopping,

The WI's autumn fayre in full flow pick up a bargain or two or just have a chat and socialise with friends over a cup of coffee – and of course a piece of WI cake. Once again It was rewarding to hear so many stallholders praise the event and reserve tables for next year. The branch is extremely grateful to everyone that came along and would also like to thank the local businesses and organisations which helped to promote the day. We wish a very happy New Year to all our readers and we hope you will enjoy reading about our activities next year. Dianna Coles

and through the Tunnel of Light in the grounds. Inside, the state rooms were decorated in the Alice theme and we really felt that we had travelled, like Alice, down the rabbit hole to Wonderland. There were plenty of stalls at the Christmas market and many of us picked up unusual gifts. After an enjoyable day we arrived back at Longwell Green tired but enchanted with our expedition to Wonderland. The next trip was to Denman, the WI’s college just outside Abingdon. The college puts on various courses throughout the year which can be attended by members and non-members and also offers bed and breakfast. Our guide showed us round the teaching rooms and the bedrooms, which looked extremely comfortable. All the rooms are sponsored by the various federations and we were lucky enough to be able to look round the Avon Federation room. The main house is very interesting and looked splendid decked out for Christmas. After a very substantial lunch we watched a hugely interesting demonstration by Clare Muir about free-style machine embroidery. I don't know what we were expecting but certainly I wasn't expecting to see her produce a bowl completely from embroidered stitches! Amazing and she made it look so easy I think we will all be producing them before long! There was just time for a short walk around the grounds before we were called back in for a still warm scone with jam and cream and then our coach was waiting to whisk us back to Longwell Green. Our December meeting will be the Christmas party where we will enjoy a two-course meal and entertainment from Sister Act. Our January meeting is a social evening with fun and games. 2019 proved to be a very interesting year for us with many fascinating speakers and interesting trips and 2020 looks set to be just as good! Our members now participate in three book clubs, a craft club, a walking group, a drama group, a skittles group, a knitting group and regular social suppers. On the first Thursday of the month we meet at the Chapel Coffee Shop in Longwell Green for Tea and Chat. Longwell Green WI meets on the third Friday of the month at 7.30pm in the Ellacombe Room at Longwell Green Community Centre and new members are always

Mangotsfield WI WE certainly know how to throw a party! 2019 ended with the gorgeous Shannon Kitchen (The Voice UK) entertaining us. Thank you to AHM Catering for providing a lovely buffet. So with music, food and good company we closed to 2019 programme. The year 2019 brought us crafting, Indian cookery, and the BBC’s Emma Britton. Dotty Herberts made Easter Trees, we voted on two campaigns - ‘save the buses’ and ‘don’t fear the smear’. Partying whenever we could, relaxing with mindfulness and an auction room talk were also on the agenda. A summer walk and multiple supper clubs and numerous fundraising events completed our activities. The 2020 programme is now on the website. We want to welcome any visitors to our friendship night on January 27. This is a great night for getting to know each other quickly. If you have heard of speed dating, speed friending is the new way to go! If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings, you do not need to know anyone. We will welcome you and assign a WI member to guide you through the evening. You will be able to enjoy cake and a cuppa and start making new friends. I guarantee that you will be offered the best cake ever, and you may learn a new skill, too. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and we do not charge for our visitors for the first two visits. We have a broad range of ways to contact us: use mangotsfieldwi@ gmail.com to email the team directly. Our website, www. mangotsfieldwi.org.uk, gives details about meetings and upcoming events for members or you can Like our Facebook page – search for @Mangotsfield to find it. Kate Tarr

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

A time to reflect

W

ITH a new year comes the opportunity to reflect, take stock of the last 365 days and plan for the year ahead. I'm very proud of what the OPCC and the Constabulary have achieved in 2019 but am aware there’s always plenty more to be done. As your PCC, I will continue to act as a fierce advocate for victims and as your voice in policing. I would also like to challenge you to do something different by getting involved in your local policing service in 2020. Volunteers play a vital part in assisting me in my role and make a huge difference in ensuring our local communities are safe

and feel safe. Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding and it is always a privilege to work alongside so many people who selflessly give up their time. Find out more about volunteering roles on the PCC’s and Constabulary’s website. As always in December, Avon and Somerset Police launched Op Tonic, a monthlong campaign that includes high visibility and covert patrols to target drink and drug drivers. Over the festive period, many of us have been having fun and celebrating with friends and family. But remember, driving under the influence of drink or drugs is a serious crime that can devastating consequences. Even being ‘slightly’ over the

limit will still land you with a penalty if you’re caught and it’s really not worth the risk. I know officers have been working hard to keep the roads of Avon and Somerset safe during the festive period. I believe that local people support the police in doing all they can to bring offenders to justice so they can ensure our roads are safe to use over Christmas and New Year, as well as the whole year round. Finally, I want to take a moment to think about the people who have been working hard day and night over Christmas and New Year to ensure our safety and protection. It’s always an extremely busy time of year for those who work in emergency services and I

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens know they all go above and beyond to keep us safe. I want to say a massive thank you to those in the NHS, police and other emergency services as well as those in voluntary and charity organisations who work hard during the festive period to support local communities.

Speeding cyclists 'must respect the path' NEW designs for some of the busiest sections of the Bristol and Bath Railway Path have been unveiled. People are being asked to have their say on the designs, which are part of a £1.1 million scheme to improve the path on its busiest stretch. Thousands of east Bristol cyclists and pedestrians use the path each day and it is popular with commuters looking for a car-free route to and from the city centre. Transport charity Sustrans is running a 'community-led redesign' focusing on the stretch between Clay Bottom, near Whitehall, and the end of the path at Newtown Park, St Philip's, which is used by up to 1,800 people per hour in morning and evening peak times. Ideas gathered at earlier public consultations were translated into possible designs, unveiled at two workshops at the Rose Green Centre and Easton

Community Centre in December. The designs on display concentrated on changes to six trouble spots: the 'Clay Bottom Wiggle' near Greenbank Cemetery, where the path goes through two tight bends; the pedestrian crossing next to Whitehall Primary School; the 'Parklet' near Chelsea Park in Easton; the area next to Easton Community Centre, close to the Easton Road and Whitehall Road junction; the railway bridge at Russell Town Avenue; the underpass under St Philip's Causeway. Ideas ranged from straightforward segregation and raised sections at St Philip's Causeway to park areas with seating and planting at Russell Town Avenue and Easton Leisure Centre, where the course of the path would be diverted to slow cyclists down. The designs were set to be published online via the Sustrans website and Bristol & Bath

Railway Path – OnePath Facebook group, for comment. Staple Hill residents Catalina and William Lee, and Sarah Ward, from Downend, were among those who attended the workshops. Catalina said the changes were trying to "change the mindset of the speedsters", the Catalina Lee discussing the designs small minority of cyclists who assumed slower changes was to reduce conflict path users would just get out of between path users and ensure their way. everyone who wanted to use She said: "It's not a cycle it felt safe to do so, striking path, it's a shared path. Some a balance between ease of people haven't quite got that movement and being able to yet." enjoy a green space. Sustrans South area director James said: "We’ve heard James Cleeton said some people that the excessive speed and called for the path to be widened close-passing of a handful of the and segregated between cyclists people cycling on the path really and pedestrians along its whole does put others off using it." length, but this was not possible Questions and comments on everywhere. the plans can be sent to south@ He said the aim of the sustrans.org.uk.

Christmas knees-up

SINGER Rockin' Gerry provided the entertainment for a good old Christmas knees up at an elderly people's lunch group. Members, who meet at Summerhill Methodist Church twice month, were treated to the party thanks to a £250 funding award from the Asda Foundation. Susan Grant, the Longwell Green store's Community Champion, regularly helps out at the luncheons and was delighted to join in the festive fun. She organised the party with help from three ladies, Barbara, Janet and Cath, who regularly cook and serve the meals. The group enjoyed a three-course turkey dinner followed by a surprise visit from Santa and an afternoon of golden classics sang to them by local singer Rockin' Gerry. Susan said: “During the event the group donated funds for a Bristol homeless charity and raised £80. “Everyone had a fantastic afternoon dancing away to Rockin' Gerry and his rock n roll hits. The donation, which was appreciated by everyone, is aimed at bringing people together at Christmas time.”

Counter terrorism campaign begins OFFICERS from Avon and Somerset are supporting the latest counter terrorism policing campaign to help keep crowded places secure over the festive period. The campaign, called Project Servator, calls on the public and those who work in busy towns and cities to remain vigilant and report any concerns to staff, security or – in confidence – to counter terrorism police at www.gov.uk/ACT. It also asks everyone to be the extra eyes and ears of the police, so officers and the public can work together to tackle terrorism. Assistant chief constable Stephen Cullen said: “We’re asking everyone out and about enjoying the festive season to look after each other and if they see something which doesn’t look right, to report it. “Neighbourhood officers will be patrolling our communities throughout the Christmas period, including Christmas Day itself, just as they are on every other day of the year. “Project Servator deployments will also be carried out across the force area – these are unpredictable deployments involving specially trained officers who turn up announced at various locations to provide the public with reassurance and to disrupt a wide range of criminal activity, including terrorism.” ACC Cullen added: “The chances of being caught up in a terrorist incident are extremely low. But sadly, as we saw recently in London, attacks can be carried out anywhere and anytime. “The national threat level remains Substantial, meaning an attack is likely, so we need to remain vigilant. “Our message to people across the Avon and Somerset force area is not to worry that you might be wasting our time. If you see something suspicious – ACT. Speak to a police officer or report it to local security or staff or via www.gov.uk/ACT and let us check it out. “A few minutes of your time could help save lives.”

Lights, camel, action YOUNGSTERS at the Meadows Primary School in Bitton celebrated the birth of Jesus with a dazzling dance show. Called 'Lights, Camel, Action', the show featured a jam-packed cast of nativity celebrities made up of children from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1. They performed in front of the whole school before taking part in another show for parents and carers. Jon Tooby, from Wellsway Multi Academy Trust, said: “The children had been rehearsing for the last two weeks and did an amazing job in the final two production, singing seven brilliant songs. “The children were amazing. The Year 2 children spoke with clarity and confidence whilst Year 1 and EYFS danced brilliantly.”

Keynsham Bowls Club presentation THIRTY proud members of Keynsham Bowls Club are pictured at the annual presentation lunch at Knowle Golf Club with the trophies that they had won during the 2019 season. Later in the month members

gathered in the clubhouse to listen to and sing along with the Oldland Ukulele Band. After the first half's entertainment, a ploughman’s supper prepared by the ladies of the social committee was followed by the second half of the

programme. During the closed season many of the members keep their eye in by bowling indoors. On a weekly basis they travel to the Bristol Indoor Club at Ashton, Purnells at Paulton and also Chippenham Bowls Club.

The Christmas coffee morning took place with the usual annual raffle for items donated by members. Members also took part in their annual Christmas party at the clubhouse, enjoying seasonal food and mulled wine.

Tributes to Chopper and derby win for Mangos IT’S been another mixed month for Mangotsfield United. The period since last month's Voice report began with a 2-0 away defeat against second-placed Thatcham Town. It was one of those games where, had we taken some clear first half chances, we could have got something up in Berkshire against one of the top two sides in the division, but two second half goals for the hosts punished us dearly and in the end Thatcham ran out clear winners. The following week saw a goalless home draw against fellow mid table side Highworth Town. This proved to be a game we could easily have won, as we created far more chances than the visitors did, but simply could not turn those chances into goals. A particularly moving moment before the game saw both sides (pictured) join the crowd for a minute’s applause in memory of John “Chopper” Hill, a former Mangos player from the 1960s

and 1970s, who died in November aged 75. In his career, John played in over 700 games for the Mangos, a tremendous record even at nonleague level. The final day of November, however, saw perhaps our best result of the season, as we were deserved 1-0 winners away to Bristol Manor Farm down at The Creek. This was one of those games where every player gave 110 per cent as Farm threw everything they could at us, but we managed to keep them out and Lee Hartshorn’s 20th-minute drive into the roof of the net earned us

a huge 3 points in what is always a difficult game due to the local derby aspect. Having said that, we created several other good chances to have put the game to bed long before the end, but overall, that one goal proved to be enough to earn the points and the bragging rights. The first game of December saw a lively 3-3 draw at Cossham Street against Hampshire side AFC Totton, but the hosts will again rue numerous missed chances and not closing the game down in the dying seconds, when the visitors snatched an unlikely point. Totton went ahead on 5 minutes through a free kick by Adam McWilliam, but Mangos striker Dan Demkiv turned the tables by hammering home a first half hat-trick, with goals on 16, 36 & 43 to give the Mangos a deserved 3-1 half-time lead. Patrick Nolan got one back for Totton on 57 minutes to make it 3-2, but there were more missed chances by the Mangos, who could and

should have finished them off. In the end, a late flurry by Totton saw their substitute Oliver Bradley fire home a 92nd-minute equaliser to break Mangotsfield’s hearts. This four-match period also saw two key departures from the club, with winger Tom Hillman joining Larkhall Athletic and, following the Totton game, midfielder Ashley McGrane opting to join Roman Glass St George. n HANHAM ATHLETIC FC Saturday December 7 Sharpness continue their good form with a 2-1 win at Hanham Athletic. The first real chance in the game came in the 33rd minute from Hanham’s Dan Gayner, his shot hitting the inside of the post. In the second half Luke Clapp’s header from a Ryan Crewe free kick was just wide of the post. The home side took the lead on 52 minutes with new signing Lewis Coppard breaking down the wing sending in a low cross that was turned into his own net by Mitch Malshansky. Three minutes later a Jamie Fry effort from distance just cleared the bar. The Sharks levelled the score in the 70th minute from a Will Lacey corner that was completely misjudged by the Hanham keeper Max Heaven and the ball went straight into the net. The Sharks were fortunate to get their second goal in the 87th minute. Keeper Dan Hobbs took a freekick from just inside his own half and Jack Baber unfortunately headed the ball past Heaven into his own net. Saturday November 30 Hanham Athletic came back from being a goal down to take the three points against Quedgeley Wanderers. All the action seemed to happen in the first 45 minutes. Hanham’s Jamie Fry had his shot well saved by Wanderers keeper

Then after 14 minutes Wanderers struck, Josh Wilson was put clear on goal miss-hit his shot but somehow still finished up in the back of the Hanham net. In the next few minutes all that changed firstly Connor Hartley’s good work was finished off by George Cryer on 16 minutes and just a minute later Cryer grabbed his second with a great shot from just inside the box. In the second half Quedgeley had a very good chance to level but a double save from home keeper Max Heaven kept the home side in front. Nathan Payne had troubled the home defence on several

FRENCHAY Cricket Club was named Coaching Club of the Year at the 2019 ECB Coach Awards. Representatives from the club were invited to attend a black tie dinner at Ashbridge House in Hertfordshire in November, with coaches from all over the country. Also in attendance were England director of cricket Ashley Giles, former chairman of selectors David Graveney and other past and present coaches. Youth chairman Matt Hunkin said: “We cater for over 200 boys and girls, along with other members of our community, including our disability squad the Frenchay Falcons. "To receive a national award for our coaching set-up is a reflection of the tremendous effort put in by the many volunteers who contribute in so many different ways." Over the last four years, 13 coaches from the club have achieved ECB Level 2 coaching qualifications, which could not have been done without a lot of hard work and invaluable support from South Gloucestershire Council and the Gloucestershire Cricket Board.
