Covid's silver lining

THE coronavirus lockdown boosted community spirit in Henleaze. It was already there in The Crescent and adjoining cul-de-sacs, Montroy Close and Cyprus Grove but needed to be spurred into action. Local resident Stan Hazell writes of a community pulling together volunteers to help those who might

need it at this challenging time with shopping, picking up items at the pharmacy, making PPE items and even a musical performance in the road. There are now plans to put together a record of The Crescent community under lockdown as both an online resource and a booklet. Report: Pages 6 & 7

End of lockdown brings VAN dwellers are on the rise again locally after their numbers fell during coronavirus lockdown. The visible increase is causing fresh worry for some residents for whom the matter is a “major source of concern”. Recent data from Bristol City Council shows there are about 40 locations across the city where people live in vans parked on the street. Five of these encampments have been assessed as having a “high impact” on the surrounding neighbourhood. And the numbers are starting to swell after nine months of growth was interrupted by a sharp drop during lockdown. The fresh information comes ten months after the council introduced a new policy for dealing with van dwellers that sought to balance the needs of residents with those of people choosing an alternative lifestyle. It was revealed in a response to questions put to city mayor Marvin Rees at July’s full council meeting. Henleaze and Westbury councillor Steve Smith, who sought the latest figures said: “These unauthorised sites on highways continue to be a major source of concern for residents in my ward.” Two roads locally are popular with van dwellers – Parry’s Lane on Durdham Down and nearby Westbury Park close to the White Tree Roundabout. Parry’s Lane is especially popular and is often packed end-to-end with large white camper vans parked on both sides of the through road. The written response provided to Councillor Smith identified Parry’s Lane as one of five encampments in the city assessed as having a “high impact” by officers from the council and Avon and Somerset Police. The other four encampments are in Maurice Road next to St Andrew’s Park in St Andrew’s; Kellaway Avenue, which runs through Horfield and Bishopston; Co-operation Road in Greenbank; and Mina Road and nearby streets in St Werburgh’s. However, the status of the

Parry’s Lane encampment has now changed to “low impact” again and no action is being taken. “The position regarding the Parrys Lane encampment is very confused, but seems to be that Council officers are currently monitoring it as a “low impact” encampment. If residents witness any problems arising from it, it’s essential that they report them to us or direct to the Council in order to build a full picture,” said Cllr Steve Smith. Whether van dwellers are having a high or low impact on the neighbourhood is assessed using evidence generally derived from police and witness statements, photographs and videos, and officer observations, the council said. A full survey carried out in March, just before lockdown, found the number of occupied vehicles had grown during the previous nine months. But by May, that number had fallen from about 150 to 60, with 45 having moved to temporary sites off the highway provided by the council to limit the spread of Covid-19. Another full survey in June revealed van dweller numbers were starting to increase again as formerly vacant vehicles were

Free face masks for shoppers

MORE than 80,000 masks are being given out to shoppers and bus users in Bristol now that Government guidance makes face coverings mandatory in shops. Wearing face coverings on public transport is already law. As part of Bristol City Council’s Are you Covered? campaign, the Mayor Marvin Rees and council staff handed out masks in The Galleries, Broadmead, Cabot Circus and the Bus Station. Masks have also been given to food banks across the city which have seen a surge in requests for support during the pandemic. Bristolians are encouraged to post a selfie of themselves on the council's social media channels wearing a face covering with the hashtag #AreyouCovered? for a chance to win £100 of shopping vouchers donated by the Broadmead Improvement District (BID).

City centre traffic changes CHANGES to how traffic flows around Bristol city centre will come into force from August 2, as part of the council’s drive to improve air quality and make it easier for people to catch the bus, walk and cycle in the city centre. Bristol Bridge will close to general traffic (buses, taxis, motorcycles and cyclists will still be allowed). Baldwin Street and the bottom of Union Street will also have similar closures. Other sustainable transport improvements include new cycling routes through the city centre that will reduce space for through traffic on Lewins Mead and Park Row/Upper Maudlin St. This is all in addition to work being undertaken across Bristol to widen pavements and create new bike lanes. King Street has already been closed to all traffic to help improve the leisure and hospitality offer in that popular location. Access to the city centre for loading and car parks will still remain using alternative routes. A map of the changes is available on the council’s website, as are details of a six month consultation on the changes: bristol.gov. uk/bristolbridgeinfo

Diners welcomed back to local eateries RESTAURANTS, shops and services are reopening across Henleaze and Westburyon-Trym following enforced closure during the past few months. The Government’s 'eat out to help out' discount scheme for Monday - Wednesday throughout August should give the sector a much-needed boost. Emerging from lockdown, restaurants such as Prego in Westbury Park, who kept their business going with a collection service, are delighted to be back for dining too. Some businesses have increased their range: Lavender Coffee Shop & Deli on Coldharbour Road has enhanced its online menu for Italian delicacies and added a new ‘click and collect’ service. Caffe Arabica on North View re-opened for dining in July. Owner Halil Cankurt (pictured), has been keeping the local community supplied with takeaway coffee, milkshakes, and a tasty selection of cakes for much of the lockdown period. Now, following all the government advice, he’s put a high quality hygiene routine in place, and is ready to welcome back sit-down customers. Halil says: “It’s really quiet at the moment. People are worried about sitting inside but we have enough room for them to sit. We’ve measured all the tables and set them out two

metres apart, and have extra tables outside.” Little French pivoted its business in April by offering a selection of food boxes, providing artisan products and produce while the restaurant on North View was temporarily closed. The restaurant reopened in early July, after reaching an agreement with the

church in Westbury Park to use the courtyard at the Methodist Church as a temporary outdoor serving area during the Covid-19 crisis. A pretty canopy with lights now covers the smaller courtyard area where meals are served and social distancing respected. The restaurant and church will monitor and take appropriate steps to stop any activities that impact adversely on local residents. Newcomer Salkaara opened its doors to customers in June offering a take-out and delivery service. The restaurant, which specialises in Southern Indian food, is now serving sit-down meals at its site by the Orpheus Cinema on Northumbria Drive. Some businesses, like The Westbury Park Pub and Kitchen, are as busy as ever with customers savouring the joy of a refreshing drink in the sun at their local. Westbury Park Community Association chair, Kevin Chidgey, says: “All of us no doubt value our local shops, pubs and businesses, but all will have been struggling. So, to reassure them that it’s worth reopening, support them as they do so and to help rebuild their businesses, it would be great if all of us – especially those now working at home – could pick up on the national slogan of ‘Shop Local’!”

Spate of robberies

Litter mayhem on Downs

EXTRA patrols were in place in July following a series of robberies on The Downs which are being treated as linked. An investigation is under way into the series, which happened at around 8pm on Friday 10 July. The victims, who were all aged between 15 and 18 years old, were separately approached by a large group of teenagers who demanded they hand over property, including speakers, bank cards, cash, and in one case, a bicycle. The offenders were described as being black or mixed race and all aged in their early to midteens. DI Clem Goodwin said: “This was a linked series of robberies in which young people on The Downs were approached, threatened and had their property taken. “Some of the victims were assaulted by being punched,

NEARLY eight tonnes of rubbish was left on The Downs in just 10 days. Bristol City Council workers collected 7.74 tonnes of waste from bins and the grounds at Clifton and Durdham Downs during the period from June 19 to 29. The 10-day period followed the easing of lockdown restrictions and coincided with a stretch of hot weather which saw people flock to parks and beaches across the region. Down’s maintenance manager Ben Skuse said “things became crazy in terms of litter” at the end of May when temperatures started to rise and people were told they could meet people from other households outside. Mr Skuse, who is employed by the council, said the weekend of May 30-31 was “one of the busiest I have ever seen on the Downs”. “It basically took all of the team a week afterwards to get the Downs looking reasonable again,” he wrote in a report to the Downs Committee. “The quantities of black bags of rubbish we were clearing daily was unprecedented. “So all in all this period has been quiet until the back end of May when things became crazy in terms of litter. “The hot conditions meaning slow grass growth has been a good thing as our tractor driver has had to spend most of his time driving to and from the waste transfer station with trailers full of rubbish cleared off the Downs.” By Amanda Cameron, Local Democracy Reporting Service

kicked or struck with a wooden stick, while in one of the incidents a teenage boy who tried to intervene was assaulted and suffered a broken nose. “Officers attended The Downs and took some of the victims in cars to search the area but the offenders could not be picked out or located. “We’re now carrying out further enquiries and will be taking statements from all the victims and reviewing CCTV from around the area. “Extra patrols will take place over the weekend to deter further offences and provide reassurance. “If anyone has information on those involved, or has been a victim of an offence and not yet disclosed it to the police, please get in touch.” If you can help, please call us on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5220152774.

How Covid brought community By Stan Hazell LOCKDOWN has its downside. But the upside has been the discovery that the community spirit of World War Two is still very much alive in our neighbourhoods. This is the story of just one community – The Crescent in Henleaze and two adjoining cul-de-sacs, Montroy Close and Cyprus Grove. As lockdown loomed Liz Newman, The Crescent`s Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, proved the catalyst for pulling together existing volunteers - normally responsible for organising street parties, carol singing at Christmas and children`s Playing Out sessions - and forming a WhatsApp group, masterminded by Hannah Hedinger, aimed at offering support to all who might need it. Leaflets went out to all the households explaining what was

planned and the idea quickly took off. Within days the list of residents joining up had reached double figures. Offers came in to pick up shopping and pharmacy supplies for the self-isolating. Those joining the queue at the Post Office took requests from the self-isolating to buy stamps and post parcels. People posted that they were going shopping and asked if they could pick anything up for someone else. The results would be left in porches with a ring on the doorbell. Even a call for spring onions for someone`s supper was quickly answered with a bunch on the doorstep. Residents found they were getting to know their neighbours – not just the ones next door but all along the road. New friendships developed which will continue long after lockdown is finally over. As the need for PPE

accessories became apparent, residents with sewing skills decided they would use the enforced time at home to help out. Jill Hazell, a former West End wardrobe mistress, offered to make laundry bags for NHS staff to take their dirty uniforms home in to wash. An NHS

nurse, Vicky Ruszala, working at Southmead Hospital and living in The Crescent, was quick to respond and soon delivered the first orders to grateful colleagues. An appeal by Jill on the WhatsApp group for raw materials resulted in her front living room being quickly

filled with duvet covers and pillowcases. Soon the production line was being augmented by two other neighbours, Sue Finney and Kate Wright. A request then came from Vicky for headbands with buttons for nurses to attach their face masks. Michele Barbour stepped in, producing over 100 with the help of her mother – fitted in between home schooling and online lecturing at Bristol University. Calls to local care homes found they were in great need of washbags and headbands as well. Soon supplies were being dropped off to them too. In all, 180 bags and 170 headbands were produced. At the same time, Kate Wright persuaded her 15-strong cycling group to join the action. Between them they produced 160 wash bags using 500 donated Glastonbury Festival tea towels, resulting in a spectacular look for other Bristol hospitals. When the wearing of face masks became more prevalent Jill put up a WhatsApp post offering to make them for local residents for a modest cost. The proceeds went to one of the many small charities hit by the lockdown, Avon Riding for the Disabled, where Jill is a volunteer. She raised £200. That mission completed, she then began making masks for local refugees where there is considerable demand. A batch of 40 was quickly delivered and a regular supply soon followed. In a scenario no doubt repeated in communities throughout the country, one resident looked after elderly neighbours as well as two

families who were vulnerable because of existing high risk medical conditions - braving the Waitrose queue and then delivering items to them each week. A 'make do and mend' spirit emerged with exchanging and giving away plants, food, furniture, and keep fit equipment such as weights and chest expanders – the latter two going to restless teenagers. The regular eight o`clock clap for the NHS and other key workers on Thursday nights further strengthened the community spirit with neighbours offering greetings from a safe distance, sharing experiences and getting to know each other better. A chance, too, to applaud their NHS worker neighbours. Some musical stars have emerged. There was guitar music from Jon Aldous and his son George with requests at one end of The Crescent (Montroy Close) and at the other a family band led by John Barnett where instrument-playing neighbours, encouraged by his wife Helen, also joined in. With supermarket donations for Foodbank, the charity helping feed the most vulnerable, inevitably dropping off during lockdown, local resident Sally Falconer Hall, appealed for donations. Husband and wife team, Kate and Tony Wright, who volunteer for the charity, were on hand to help get the donations where they are needed. Bags of provisions now regularly appear on both doorsteps. Another resident has been organising

Got News? Call 0117 9082121

food donations for Borderlands, the charity supporting refugees, which has also been hit by the effects of Covid-19. The WhatsApp group has even proved useful for do-ityourselfers. With lockdown providing opportunities to get those little jobs done there have been appeals for guttering and pieces of corrugated iron which have found people scouring sheds and garages to answer requests. So it seems that the lockdown

has unlocked the community spirit which was already there but needed something to spur it into action. And it has shown the power and effectiveness of social media in a crisis. There are now plans to put together a record of The Crescent community under lockdown as both an online resource and a booklet. Liz Newman is keen to hear from local residents who would like to share their stories. Contact Liz at: elizabethnewman@live.com.

THE number 2 bus route, from the A37 to the A4018, is the first to be assessed as Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority look to improve travel through key areas over the next decade. It’s part of a project to improve Bristol’s transport network along key corridors within the city, introducing better bus travel, cleaner air, and improved walking and cycling routes, alongside ongoing plans for mass transit. The survey is live so residents, businesses and anyone who uses any part of the route, can give their views on what changes could be made to make cycling, walking and catching the bus easier, safer and more reliable. The number 2 bus runs from Stockwood to Cribbs Causeway via the city centre and Henleaze. It is one of eight transport routes identified as needing improvements due to the large numbers of people using them. To complement this, operator First West of England has confirmed it will double the frequencies of the number 2 bus

critical to achieving that as it will help people to access jobs and leisure opportunities. “Over the next decade we plan to make significant changes to these key routes that will protect

public health and unlock barriers to inclusive economic growth with cleaner air, safer and better public transport, and improved walking and cycling routes.” The A37/A4018 route starts

It then heads north along the A4018 and travels into Henleaze, Southmead and Henbury before arriving at Cribbs Causeway. The West of England authorities are working with bus operators on a recovery plan once restrictions are relaxed. First West of England has committed to a Bus Deal with the West of England Combined Authority and Bristol City Council to improve journey times, increase passenger numbers and expand the network. James Freeman, managing director of First West of England, said: “We are very excited about these developments which will make public transport along this corridor more reliable and more attractive. In response, we committed to increasing

the frequency of service 2 in particular and we are delighted that we can now bring this about in the form of extra journeys, numbered 2a, which will operate between Stockwood and Southmead. The 2 and 2a together will generally provide double the frequency from 2 August through the city.” The engagement will seek to gather ideas on how to improve the route as a whole, as well as focusing on areas where congestion is an issue like on the A37 Wells Road, A4018 Whiteladies Road, North View and in the city centre. In particular the survey will ask for comments on: • Creating better and more attractive pedestrian environments including safe crossing points • Reallocating road space for cyclists and buses • Improving road layouts to help buses move quickly through the

Expert gardener Arthur departs having sown seeds of joy ARTHUR Brice, an avid supporter of Westbury-on-Trym Village Show, being the Plant and Vegetable Judge for many years, died at the age of 82 in July after a long illness. Horticultural expert Arthur was a member of the Westburyon-Trym Society for 40 years and Chair of the Allotments Association for twelve years. He was the man behind the stunning floral displays in Westbury-onTrym for which he was awarded the Lord Mayor’s Medal in 2015. Arthur Brice lived and breathed horticulture in all its forms since training at Dartington College in his native Devon, and worked for the Parks and Gardens Departments at Portsmouth and Bristol. He was the brains behind the installation of flower pots in and around Westbury village in the early 1980s and maintained them regularly with Roger Smith, former chairman of the Westbury-on-Trym Society. Roger said: “Arthur was very much into gardening, plant life and the well being of Westbury as a whole. His knowledge of plants, trees and all things green has been very useful to the village. “We became involved in maintaining the ‘Pack Horse Triangle’ at the base of Chock Lane. The Westbury-on-Trym Society (WoTSoc) took over the area and landscaped it with the help of youngsters. “He was a very good friend to me and the community at large. For anything green, Arthur was your man.”

Arthur Brice with Alexia Gardner at the 2019 Westbury-onTrym Village Show His partnership with Sue Boyd and the Westbury-inBloom sub group of the Society covered many other corners of the village and contributed towards 10 years of winning trophies for Westbury. This enthusiasm to spread gardening science led him to being an adviser to the Methodist Church in Westbury and to the Village Hall Management Committee. He led work on the churchyard at the Parish Church, at the Packhorse Garden, on flower beds and pots for the library and in tree planting for various commemorations. He was a judge at Westbury’s annual Flower Show and a speaker for countless

organisations on any aspect of gardening. Arthur Brice died in his sleep with his family around him at John Wills House, Westbury Fields, where, they say, he received magnificent care in his last months and made many new friends. Hilary Long, chair of WoTSoc said: “AB - as we knew him, had been ill for several years, but had borne his pain with amazing courage and kept his life going among us all in a most astonishing way. “He became a legend in his long life in Bristol and particularly in his beloved Westbury. "Gardener extraordinaire and

eminent horticulturist, he was also a writer - always generously sharing his knowledge and thoughts on gardens, plants, trees, and their care with us all, both in print and in person. “He was a universal friend - all whom he met, judged in competitions, taught and cared for, loved and respected him. His passing leaves us all with a great hole in our hearts - he is irreplaceable.” A service for family and friends was held at Canford Crematorium on July 27. There are plans for a memorial service and celebration of his life to be held in Westburyon-Trym at a later point.

Melody Makers choir sings out for local charity MELODY Makers Choir have recorded a song to raise vital funds for Jessie May, the at home children’s hospice. Members of the mixed pop choir, Melody Makers Choir, based in Henleaze, Westburyon-Trym and Stoke Gifford, have been missing their face to face rehearsals since the beginning of lockdown, but choir leader Natalie Veal has been keen to keep rehearsals flowing, rehearsing using Zoom technology. Natalie said: “In order to give us focus and to make up for the lack of gigs and fundraising opportunities, we've recorded a beautiful virtual recording of Love Can Build a Bridge.” They’ve added it to YouTube https://youtu.be/eXcjWcTGLxI - and are accompanying the video with a link to their Just Giving page www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ MelodyMakersChoir inviting listeners to donate a sum of money for Jessie May. The choir’s last charity single We Are the Same Inside made it to number 6 on the Amazon music chart. Natalie, the choir's founder, said: “I feel passionate about supporting our local charities and the people in our community through singing and feeling connected. Our virtual online choir gives us a chance to step out of our world at home and focus on the joy of singing for an hour each week.” Melody Makers Choir has created a new recording of Love Can Build A Bridge by The Judds, previously recorded by Cher, Neneh Cherry and Westlife. They've been fortunate to have the talented Guy Britton as music editor and post producers of Britain's Got Talent, The Farm Group to create the music video. Jessie May is Melody Makers 2020 charity. Natalie Veal said: “We have four wonderful Jessie May nurses in our choir who tell us just how vital their work and care in the community is for many families

with terminally ill children in the South West. This is our way of showing our admiration and appreciation of our singing angels.” The choir hopes to get back to normal rehearsals as soon as it is safe to do so. “I know that when we meet again, it'll feel so much more powerful and emotional. We've missed hearing each other sing together, but have managed to connect online and enjoy the power of music each week. We are currently learning a new Ed Sheeran song and a beautiful song from the Disney Film Coco, which we will pop on YouTube when finished, so look out for it by following our channel on YouTube – Melody Makers Choir,” Natalie said. The choir is always on the lookout for new members and whether meetings are online or in person in September, you can guarantee that an hour of singing each week will raise your spirits and leave you feeling incredibly uplifted. “Music is our universal language,” said Natalie. “Singing is our act. Friendship, togetherness and music is our product. At choir, we are all equally valued, whatever your race, gender, age, disability, religion or sexual orientation. Everyone is welcome to sing with us. Lockdown has been an incredibly difficult time for musicians and we are all eagerly waiting to find out when we can safely resume our livelihoods. Until then, our choir will keep rehearsing online so that when it’s safe to perform and rehearse, we will have a beautiful repertoire of songs to share with our audiences.” In the meantime, the choir hopes to raise lots of money for Jessie May. n EDUCATION IT’S been the most unusual end to their secondary education, but in July, students in Year 13 at Redmaids’ High gained their IB Diplomas. All students passed, with the average point score for the group being 36 – far above the global average of 29 – with nearly a quarter of students gaining 40 points or more. The May 2020 examination session was cancelled due to restrictions and social distancing measures implemented to combat the spread of COVID-19. As a result, the IB is awarding grades for this session based on coursework, predicted grades and historic data. The qualification, whose core values promote an international mindedness and is highly regarded by top universities, is taught in 157 countries. This global awareness has influenced the students’ time in lockdown, as has the ‘Community, Activity and Service’ part of their studies; volunteering, coaching, fundraising and other community focused initiatives make up part of the Diploma.

Great results for community-minded IB students at Redmaids’ High Emily VaughanWilliams receives her IB Diploma Lucie Jones from Redland, took part in an NHS scheme to support someone who has been self-isolating and baked cupcakes every Sunday to give to Caring in Bristol. This autumn she will be heading to Cardiff University to study Law and French. Arabella Maguire from Henleaze has been learning basic Urdu and about Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Most days she supports her grandparents who have been shielding, by

cleaning, shopping and keeping them company. Her next step is to study Medicine at Queens’ College London. Alice Hemming from Westbury-on-Trym, has been volunteering at the North Bristol Foodbank and working as a hospital porter at Southmead Hospital. She has secured a spot at York studying History. Emily Vaughan-Williams, who has been awarded a place at Durham University to study Music, has spent the past few months writing a trumpet concerto and has been helping a younger pupil with reading and writing. IB Coordinator for Redmaids’ High, Pete Brealey, said: “The ethos of the IB Diploma – and in fact, of Redmaids’ High itself has influenced how many of our students have spent their time

during lockdown. When they were expecting to be on study leave and sitting exams, they thought of ways to be productive and add value to those around them, and we couldn’t be more proud.” Head of Sixth Form, Lisa Jephcote, added: “For students and teachers across the country and the world, the last few months have required a lot of adjustment. However, the results today reflect the hard work put in across several years at Redmaids’ High and we are excited for our students to be going out to make a real difference in the world.” If you are interested in studying the IB Diploma at Redmaids’ High School, you can find out more by visiting their Virtual Event at www. redmaidshigh.co.uk/sixth- formvirtual-event

Girls clean up in national enterprise contest A TEAM from Badminton School in Westbury-on-Trym have had a double success in the nationwide Tycoon Enterprise Competition. The girls won the £1k category and were declared overall winners of the contest, run by the Peter Jones Foundation. It challenged students across the country to create a social enterprise idea that addresses a social or environmental issue. In response, the winning Badminton School team founded The Citrus Way, a company that manufactures and sells an environmentally friendly cleaning solution, produced entirely by themselves, from food waste including orange and lemon peel. The Team of six Year 11 girls were responsible for creating a business plan in order to borrow a £337 start-up loan from the Foundation, before developing, marketing and selling their product at numerous events throughout the year. Shortlisting of businesses began at the start of the summer and The Citrus Way were one of only five teams from 491 to make the final list in their category. The shortlisted businesses were assessed by a panel of business experts and the Bristol-based team were announced this year’s winners. The Peter Jones

Foundation, whose founder and chairman is entrepreneur Peter Jones CBE, stated in a congratulatory letter to the team: “The students should be incredibly proud of this achievement and of displaying such a high degree of enterprise across all eight capabilities.” The Citrus Way Team, none of whom had studied business before, said of their journey: “We didn’t just learn more about the world of business, but we also learnt a lot about ourselves and how each of us can contribute to the business with our unique skills and talents. When we come together as a team The Citrus Way goes from 'just a business' to an extraordinary movement. Our journey taught us that no work comes without challenges and solving them is what makes the experience enjoyable.” Rebecca Tear, headmistress at Badminton School, said: “I applaud The Citrus Way Team for this outstanding achievement. Their tenacity and willingness to develop their ideas, as well as the business and enterprise talent that they have shown in abundance throughout this journey, is inspiring to witness. Enterprise is an activity that is developing strongly at Badminton and the team’s win has certainly The Citrus Way team at a fundraising event fuelled everyone’s interest even further.”

n EDUCATION THE fifth Ablaze poetry competition attracted nearly 600 entries from 22 local schools. A panel of judges, including Bristol’s first poet laureate Miles Chambers and Ablaze sponsor, Bristol Water, chose the category winners and overall winner. Although this year’s prizegiving event couldn’t be hosted due to Coronavirus restrictions, staff from independent charity

Pupils' poetry contest success Ablaze were able to meet their competition winners on their doorstep, hand them their certificate and prize, and let the children know how much their poems and pictures were loved. The theme for this year’s poetry competition was ‘Water’. Beatrice Brown, from Ashton Gate Primary School, was the under 7 category winner with her poem ‘Cloud Burst’. In the 7-9 year old category, Ryma Medjeboub, from Whitehall Primary School impressed the judges with her poem ‘The Boy and the Sea’ and Amelie Scanlon, from Ashton Gate Primary School with her poem ‘Look at Me!’ was the winning entry in the 9-11 year old category. For the first time the overall winner was in the under 7s category. Ablaze gave huge congratulations to Leilani Peglar,

Schools get extra funding to improve buildings ELEVEN schools in Bristol will benefit from extra funding to expand classrooms, upgrade facilities and improve the education of children, as part of a government scheme. Locally, finance from the Condition Improvement Fund will allow the refurbishment of leaking flat roofs at Westbury-on-Trym Church of England Academy and heating provision to the unheated sections of Westbury Park Primary School. The Prime Minister has also announced a new transformative 10year school rebuilding programme. This will be kick-started with over £1billion for the first 50 projects in 2020-21. Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “My number one focus will always be to make sure every student has access to excellent education and training. “Replacing and upgrading poor condition school and college buildings with modern, energy efficient designs will give our students and teachers the environment they deserve and support them to maximise their potential.”

from St Ursula’s E-Act Academy for her wonderful poem, ‘Water’. At only 6 years old Leilani is clearly headed for great things! This cover design winner was Aliza Ali, from Woodlands Academy with her beautiful picture depicting the busy and colourful world under the

School mobile library a hit with students A SHIREHAMPTON secondary academy has launched a doorto-door library service providing its students with vital access to books whilst the school is closed to many of its students. English teacher at Oasis Academy Brightstowe, Emma Playfair, came up with the idea to support avid readers to continue reading and encourage reluctant readers to discover a love of reading. With the help of the academy’s librarian, Kat Gardner-Graham, the pair set up the mobile library, which in its first week delivered 31 books to students, by the second week the number shot up to over 50. The increase in demand is set to continue as word spreads across the school community. Using the school minibus, Emma and Kat are able to maintain social distancing during their weekly round of deliveries, making sure books are thoroughly cleaned before being put back. About the academy’s mobile library service, Kat said: “I’m

thrilled with how many students want to use this service. It’s been fantastic to see requests from students who are normally reluctant readers. Sometimes students aren’t sure what they want to read, so I look at what they’ve taken out in the past and what I know about them personally and hopefully select the right book for them. “Giving our students the opportunity to explore new genres and get into a book also contributes to their wellbeing - a book is the perfect opportunity for escapism in these unsettled times.” Year 10 student, Masie Robinson, said: “When my books were delivered I was very excited because it meant that I could read some new content instead of my books at home.” Newly appointed principal of Oasis Academy Brightstowe, Alan Dane, added: “The mobile library is a great example of Team Brightstowe’s commitment to our students throughout this challenging time.”

THIS month I’ve been struck by the vast array of options we have to help you see better when the light’s bright. I don't know about you, but I see myself as an optimist. Any day that it’s not actually raining (hard) is a sunglasses day. Whilst the last few months have not seen many new product launches, now the world of optometry is returning back to normal it’s play time! As you probably know, I’m all for trying out and evaluating the latest tech whether it’s glasses lenses, frame styles & designs or eye exam instruments. As you may have seen from our Facebook pages, (facebook.com/ turnersopticians) I’ve been trying to match retro sunglasses with my uncut, lockdown longer than average, hair. Thanks to those of you who sent me kind comments and I was pleased to not get anything too cheeky back! This month, as I’m sure many of us have, I finally got the relief of a haircut. Now I don’t know about you, but I like to chat with whoever’s cutting my hair, and being able to see their face (well the half not covered by a mask anyhow) means wearing contact lenses. It was in my view a modestly sunny day (well okay it wasn’t pouring with rain!). I took the opportunity to try out the latest sun tinting contact lenses I’ve recently been sent to try, for my walk to and from the barbers. They’re really quite good, clearly they don’t replace the look you get from a nice pair of Ray-Ban’s but in terms of visual performance and comfort I was impressed! If contact lenses are not for you, it’s not a problem. We now have more sun lens options than ever before. As I write we’re trying out the latest lenses and now have three grades of sun reacting tinting lenses (transitions) to offer, as well as three different polaroid options and numerous other tinted lenses we’ve designed ourselves. Don’t worry though, our expert team is happy taking the time to understand your individual vision needs and recommending the

perfect sun wear for you! When you come and see us you can expect the usual high standards of personal service, professional expertise and hygiene excellence you’re used to, from you local independent opticians. You & your loved ones are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care and new glasses or contact lenses. We just ask that you telephone first to book a time to come in to help us keep you all safe. Whatever your eye care needs, whether for driving, home working, seeing the golf ball more clearly or just relaxing in the sun, our expert team is ready & waiting to help you - however you like to protect your eyes from the sun! To book an extended eye exam or frame style consultation for yourself or those you love, please call our Henleaze practice on 0117 962 2474 or our Fishponds practice on 0117 965 4434.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

n FROM OUR MP

Enjoying the summer, but getting set for winter too Your Voice in Parliament PARLIAMENT is now in recess until September 1, but it will come as no surprise to you that – bar two weeks off – it doesn’t mean my team and I aren’t working hard on your behalf. The autumn is going to be very busy for Parliament and we’re all conscious of the winter ahead: managing Covid-19 alongside the other challenges we always face in winter, from influenza to NHS capacity to flooding. I don’t mean to cause angst as we try to celebrate the summer, but I do want you to know that I’m working hard to make sure we’re as prepared as possible for the months ahead. Nationally, I’ve been calling on Ministers to ensure proper consumer protections are in place to accompany the delivery of green home vouchers, from September, to upgrade the energy efficiency of our homes. Our homes and buildings really do need upgrading – it's a priority net-zero transition requirement – but a minority of dodgy traders can let the rest down and deflate confidence from homeowners in getting the work done. I’m expecting the Government to bring forward comprehensive consumer protections, complaints processes and upfront easy information at the same time as delivering vouchers. I’ve also written to the Business Secretary, as part of my committee inquiry on the impact of Covid-

19 on business and workers. This interim report sets out recommendations for the future (such as the need for sectoral support for British manufacturing, including aerospace) and a request to learn from the mistakes made in the early stages of the pandemic including leaving out new starters, the self-employed and freelancers from appropriate income support. Blind spots in support must be addressed, including anti-discrimination guarantees for pregnant women at risk of redundancy and proper income support to people following local lockdowns protocols. Our recommendations are supported by workers, trade unions, experts and industry leaders from across the UK and they mirror the conversations I’ve been having with constituents in Bristol throughout the pandemic. We all know it’s going to be a bumpy few months ahead and that we’ve still got lots of work to do to get through this pandemic. I will continue to work as hard as I can to make sure all of you are represented as best as possible. If you think I’m missing something, please do let me know! Your Champion in Bristol I'VE always looked forward to August, not just to take some time off with my family, but because of the extra time I get to meet with many of you across the constituency. Sadly, I can’t do this safely in the normal way this year,

Got News? Call 0117 9082121

so instead, I’ve set up meetings with our frontline services to say thanks and understand what more they need in preparations for the winter. From food banks and fire and rescue services to police and schools, all of our essential workers have stepped up to help our community when it was most needed and they’re doing fantastic work in preparing for our return to school and work. I'm also very conscious of the number of local people being made redundant. I set up and co-hosted an emergency Jobs Summit attended by all Bristol MPs, our Mayor, trade unions and major employers. We must pull together to coordinate existing support and to highlight the gaps that put people at risk of redundancy. Some companies, including Westbury-on-Trym’s Hearing Solutions, have been able to restructure and save jobs but that, sadly, won’t be the case for all businesses. In addition to the Jobs Summit, I will be visiting a number of local businesses during August to understand what more can be done to help keep jobs, transition workers and, ideally, lay the foundations for creating new jobs in our recovery. Bristol City Council has launched an ambitious engagement programme to inform their public transport improvement plans across the No. 2 Bus Route that runs right through our constituency. You can

Darren Jones column follow the route and give feedback online (https://travelwest.info). I’m also partnering with residents in Westbury and across Bristol to make sure that offline constituents can share their feedback too. This engagement window runs until September 11, so please share your thoughts on how we can improve this travel corridor. On August 15, I’ll be hosting our next online Café Politics. Please go to my website (www.darrenjones. co.uk) to reserve a space. I’ve enjoyed these informal catch-ups with constituents and I’d like to see them continue even when we get back to hosting in-person events again. As always, if you have any questions or need my help just drop me an e-mail on darren.jones. mp@parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons. My Facebook Page is at www.facebook. com/darrenjonesmp and you can join my mailing list via my website, www.darren-jones.co.uk

WHILE most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

Contact us now for a complimentary financial planning review THE pandemic and its economic consequences have recently gripped the markets causing a dramatic sell down in risk assets like shares over the last few months. The consensus view is: • There is a high risk of a prolonged global economic recession. • Equities are likely to remain extremely volatile in the shortterm as the story around the Coronavirus changes on a daily basis. The stock market panicked from around the end of February, causing shares to experience

some of the largest one day downward moves since 2008, 1987 and yes, even 1929. So, what does this all mean for your financial goals? Whether you are approaching retirement or indeed are already enjoying your retirement, then it is likely that you will be heavily invested in assets like pensions, ISAs and investment bonds – all of which themselves are likely to be invested, in some shape or form, in the stock market. Therefore, you should immediately consider a financial planning review to ensure you

are still on track and make any changes that are required. I encourage you therefore to act now to protect your financial goals and not wait until those ‘normal times’ which may never return as we once knew them. Coronavirus Safe Financial Planning Reviews Please be assured that we have taken all steps to eliminate any risks of contracting the virus during our reviews with clients. We are set up on all of the popular remote/video meeting systems (Zoom, Skype, Facetime, Teams etc) – just let us know which one you prefer. Alternatively, if you would like a traditional face to face meeting, our office is fully ‘Covid Secure’ with all cleaning and social

distancing processes in place. We even have a large outdoor courtyard meeting space if you prefer! Just let us know when booking. How to book Call 0117 363 6212 or email richard@haroldstephens.co.uk or contact us through the website www.haroldstephens.co.uk for your complimentary financial planning review. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Helping those worst affected by pandemic AS we navigate our way through the recovery phase of lockdown, I want to ensure support and help is available to the people and communities disproportionately affected by the pandemic. I have relaunched the Commissioner’s Community Action Fund (CCAF) and I will be offering an additional £200,000 to support charities, voluntary organisations and groups helping to deal with the consequences of the global health emergency. Such initiatives across Avon and Somerset can apply for grants up to £5,000. The extra funding will continue to strengthen those hard-working and courageous organisations who have been a lifeline to local people during these challenging times. By working together we can continue to make improvements in our communities. The CCAF application process is easy and straightforward.

Please remember that we want to say yes to as many of these initiatives as much as possible. More information can be found on my website, www. avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk. I’m sure many of us are aware that local people living in domestic abuse environments have been more vulnerable and at risk due to the lockdown. My team and I have secured over £500,000 of additional funding for 17 local support services who help victims and survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence. This funding will help to cover organisations’ losses and costs incurred, following both adapting and increasing these services during the pandemic. The extra funding will also strengthen local support services’ response to any change in demand as life starts to return to some sort of ‘normal’. We will continue to work with our

General Building

partners to ensure victims and survivors know help is out there. There are many stereotypes surrounding domestic abuse that still need to be broken, including men only being perpetrators, women only being victims and domestic violence only taking place in spousal relationships. This is not the case. One type of domestic abuse that is not spoken about enough is child-toparent abuse (CPA). Since 2010, there has been an increase in CPA reports across the country and it is likely we will see a spike in such abuse as a result of lockdown. I want to reach out to these victims and survivors and say you are not alone and you do not need to suffer in silence. I know many victims feel too fearful and ashamed to come forward, as they do not want to get their loved ones in trouble, but I cannot stress enough that help is out there. You do not need to report to the police to access

Your Local Builder

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens help, and support services will work with you to reach the best outcome for you and your family. For more information about help available, please visit www. thisisnotanexcuse.org In these uncertain times, let’s all be cautious, act with common sense but still show compassion towards one another. Stay safe.

Cake and aliens? Just what the doctor ordered

Author Rachel McCoubrie with her book The Great Alien Cake Off which has been awarded a USA Independent Publishers Award

THE delight that Henleaze resident Rachel McCoubrie experienced in getting her first book published has been topped by the recent news that The Great Alien Cake Off has gone on to win an Independent Publishers Book Award (IPPY) 2020 in America. The picture book, beautifully illustrated by Robert McPhillips, is a fantastical rhyming story based on the planet Cookie Dreams and the chaos that comes about when aliens learn to bake. Everyone lives exclusively off biscuits, until one day a young alien called Zappo discovers cake. Soon the other alien parents learn to bake and start to get competitive about their cakes. The headteacher decides to put it to the test and organises a cake off competition at the school. Full of wonderful alien characters who get a little carried away with their new-found love of cake making and accidentally create more than they bargained for...what happens next is literally out of this world! Rachel began writing the book in 2010 while working as a doctor for University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. Now working as a palliative care consultant at the BRI and a lead for doctors' wellbeing and support, getting the book published took many years.

Help came from a visiting author/ illustrator at Elmlea Infants School who began reading it to children at his school visits and the book took off from there, being commissioned in 2017. Speaking about her inspiration for the story, Rachel said: “I was looking at the moon one day and thought that it looked like a cheese cake. To me, the sun resembled a lemon drizzle cake, and the earth a chocolate cake and that set me thinking about what cakes other planets would be?” Helen Stephens, creative director at publishers From You To Me, said: “We were delighted to receive Bronze for this title. Rachel is at the start of her writing career and this is such an amazing accolade to get for a first book. “We love producing unforgettable and entertaining colour illustrated books for children of all ages to explore and read time and time again – and this one definitely hits the mark.” The Great Alien Cake Off is sold locally in Kondi Gifts, Henleaze and Max Minervas, North View. It is also available on Amazon and via the publishers website www. fromyoutome.com/the-great-alien-cake-off. html

A local Covid-safe Wills and Power of Attorney service WESTBURY High Street was due to have a launch party for Simpson Solicitors’ new Wills and Probate service at the start of April, but unfortunately it didn’t happen as this was less than two weeks from the country going into lockdown. However, they opened anyway without any celebrations, and John and Michelle Baden-Daintree and Leanne Shears were designated as key workers to serve the public covering Westbury, Henleaze and the surrounding area. Solicitor John Baden-Daintree says: “We are very proud of the fact we stayed open providing local help and supported to so many people – just when they need us most. Whether it was helping the family of people who had died or putting in place Powers of Attorney to allow people who were at home

shielding to appoint someone to do their banking and run errands for them.” During lockdown, when John and Michelle brought their highly rated service to Henleaze and Westbury, they offered “door-step” signings, garden meetings and even a drive thru service in their car park for people shielding – so that they did not need to leave their car! Michelle explains: “We always try to find new ways to help people – COVID just meant we had to be more creative. As things go back to normal you will see our office looks like a shop. This is because we want people to feel they can pop in to see us. With ground floor meeting rooms with 2m social distancing, we offer free legal advice with no obligation to go on to use our service. If people do decide to instruct us we offer clear fixed prices.” This Summer, as life becomes a little more normal, you may take

John and Michelle Baden-Daintree a moment to reflect on the past few difficult months, who has helped you and who are the people you have really missed that are important in your life. As a result, it might mean that now is the time to update your Will. If you have spent time shielding at home during lockdown, then now is also the time to put an up to date Lasting Powers of Attorney

in place. This could protect you if there is a second spike in Coronavirus later in the year. For readers of Henleaze and Westbury Voice, if you mention The Voice when contacting them on 0117 209 2724, Simpson Solicitors offer not only a FREE Legal Review but if you then instruct them you will get 20% off their already great value charges.

New space for foster carers in city housing THE first family is already benefiting from new rooms in a pilot scheme set up by Bristol City Council thanks to Redland councillor Martin Fodor’s budget amendment, which pays for extra rooms in cramped council housing. Bristol has a shortage of larger council houses – the waiting list is twice as long as for smaller properties, and families needing larger homes have to wait for around two years. Last year Green Party councillor Martin Fodor identified unspent funds in the Council’s Housing Revenue Account and proposed a budget amendment to use this spare money (unspent capital reserves) to create extensions in council homes where there is space for extra rooms. The amendment was unanimously voted through with support from all parties – a rare occurrence for budget amendments. The funding in question was reserved for

use on council housing so the amendment has not cost the council extra money. Cllr Fodor explained: “The idea is that all other properties, such as private sector owners and landlords, get extensions and spare rooms added when more space is needed. I suggested that as council houses become vacant they could be assessed and the most suitable types could have extensions added while being made ready to re-let.” One year on, his proposal is coming into play as the first council houses are being extended through a pilot scheme – with one extension just completed and other projects in development. This is a pilot scheme which could reach up to a maximum of ten properties. As well as providing more housing stock for larger families in Bristol, the amendment has also made it possible for foster families in the city to care for more children by providing much

needed space. Leader of the Green Group, Bishopston Councillor Eleanor Combley, said: “Like many councils, Bristol always needs more foster carers, who provide a crucial service providing a home and safe family environment for our children in care. Our ambition is to let every child grow up within a family, if that is the right thing for them. “We know that many of our committed foster carers would be willing to offer a home to another child, but are stopped by the lack of space. Now thanks to this amendment, the excellent way council officers and foster carers work together, and the collaborative approach taken by Family Services and Housing Departments, a first home has just been extended with a twostorey side extension and handed back to a foster family with extra rooms, and builders have started work on another property.” Councillor Fodor went to visit the family and see the improvements himself. “It’s so rewarding to know my council house extension fund not only worked but is now helping people’s lives in an unexpected way, to provide a family life to some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the city,” he said. “I feel like it’s one of the most direct ways I've made a difference to peoples lives since

I became a councillor in 2014. I’m thrilled that this budget amendment is helping people so directly.” A teenager in the family said: “After the extension has been built it feels more spacious and not overcrowded, and now we can all socialise in one place without getting in each other's way. We can all help around the kitchen as it is big enough for all of us to help out when needed.” Foster parent Becky found that before the extension the family had limited space. She wrote that with the extension completed she would be able to care for another child and described the benefits to her family: “Downstairs has created a larger communal area for the family where independence can be encouraged with cooking in the kitchen; extra family space for the whole family to interact and all children can have friends around which is encouraged. The extra space has enabled us to have a homework station in the kitchen diner area so that I can help support homework whilst cooking. “Even though it is early days of completion we are seeing the vast advantages to us as a family this has created.” To find out more about fostering a child see: www. bristol.gov.uk/web/foster-withbristol-city-council/home

Local care company gets the seal of approval

HOME Instead Senior Care Bristol North has won an award for being one of the Top 20 home care providers in the South West. There are 826 home care providers in the region and this is the second time they have won this award. The award is based on the home care provider’s reviews from the people they care for, plus their friends and relatives. Homecare.co.uk is a reviews site, that lists all registered UK home care providers, which helps people search for the right home care provider. John Moore, owner of Home Instead Senior Care Bristol North, said: “To win this award for a second time is an honour, not least because it is a direct result of unbiased feedback from our clients and their families. “The last few months have been extremely challenging. Our caregivers have worked tirelessly to ensure their clients have been able to remain living safely and happily in their own homes throughout the pandemic. To be recognised for this hard work adds to the reward we already receive when clients thank us. “You can’t be a caregiver without having an empathetic nature, passion for the role, and a genuine desire to make a positive

Kirsty Hirst, Director of Care & Compliance at Home Instead Bristol North with the homecare top 20 award difference for the community. All of our caregivers have what it takes to make a difference.” Amanda Hopkins, reviews manager of homecare.co.uk, said: “High quality home care is crucial as it enables people to stay living in their own homes and keep their independence, with their home care worker often becoming their friend and companion

as well as their lifeline to the outside world. “During the pandemic, their contribution has been invaluable as many vulnerable and elderly people have been forced to self-isolate and to some of these, care workers have been their only link with the rest of society. They have also been able to bring people living at home, food and the medication they desperately need. “Home Instead Senior Care Bristol North has shown that it provides care that is of excellent quality.” Home Instead takes a unique, personcentred approach to home care, which benefits both clients and the team. Clients are supported to live as independently as possible, by caregivers that they come to know well and who visit for a minimum of an hour at a time. The homecare.co.uk Top 20 Home Care Awards are based on nearly over 14,000 reviews by service users and family / friends of service users from between 1 May 2018 and 30 April 2020. Plans announced for 2020 Fiesta Flypast ORGANISERS of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta have announced plans for this year, which will include activity in the sky and online, but no on-theground activity at Ashton Court. In order to adhere to the governmental guidelines around social distancing and mass gatherings, the 2020 edition of Bristol International Balloon Fiesta cannot take place as normal. An inaugural ‘Fiesta Flypast’ will take to the skies on a date to be selected between 1 - 14 August, which will see iconic balloons flying over the city and, depending on which way the wind is blowing, may be seen passing over gardens in Bishopston and the Downs. Chris Allcock, Bristol International Balloon Fiesta Chair explains: “We’re all deeply saddened that we can’t gather at Ashton Court to celebrate the 42nd Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, but we have been

working with our balloonists and the authorities to create an event which adheres to the social distancing restrictions. “We are inviting Bristolians to watch the balloons from the

safety of their own doorsteps and gardens. Social distancing means we absolutely cannot gather in parks or Bristol’s open spaces or invite our audiences to see the balloons take off or land, to

protect our pilots and the public. Instead we’re asking people to give them a wave as they fly past Bristol’s communities.” Organisers have teamed up with BBC Radio Bristol for another lockdown treat, in the form of a virtual nightglow, staged with extra special additions and a soundtrack produced to lift the spirits of the city on Saturday 8 August. Anyone who has already purchased car parking for the event will be able to log into the ticket platform to select a refund, which will be automatically processed within 25 days of selecting. Those wishing to support the event through 2020 can select the option to donate their ticket, either the full, or partial amount, using the same process. For more information, follow the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on @bristolballoon.

You cannot overdose on vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. Remember to cover up or protect your skin if you're out in the sun for long periods to reduce the risk of skin damage and cancer.

Exercise This column by Jess Williams of Kellaway Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being while also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care.

Walk, run and keep riding – reports of people taking up more exercise during the lockdown has been one of the positives from this period and record numbers giving up smoking. Please don't park your bike. Many have now discovered it is not only going to the gym that helps. Go for walks, at your own comfortable pace.

Value community kindness

Our community has been our lifeline during this

August, 2020 period. You have all supported the Kellaway Pharmacy team, part of your local NHS to find strength and hope, during our exhaustion and sense of isolation from promised resources. We must all continue in the same spirit. Tidying up the community, giving up time to support each other. We have become so much more connected due to our shared vulnerability. Our strength is how, together, we build a better future. Join in!

Get ready for school and winter The best way to get prepared for the next academic year is to have a fun-filled summer. We all deserve this, especially the children. Travelling may have challenges but remember here in Westbury Park, we have a leading South West Travel Health and Vaccination services provider in Kellaway pharmacy. The summer is also an excellent time to sort out vaccinations like chickenpox and Meningitis B. If your travel plans have been delayed, this is the best time to get all the jabs you need. Our price-match promise offers you peace of mind. We are already planning for the autumn and winter months, as some services may scale back to cope, so please act now. Our pharmacy team is here to look after your health, whether close to home, a foreign holiday or gap year. Our lowest cost guarantee is a significant cost saver too. Travel or vaccination queries? Rankin celebrates NHS Jobs saved at Hearing Solutions with portrait series A COMPANY in Westbury-onTrym that sells hearing aids has been sold out of administration, saving all 32 jobs. Administrators PCR were appointed by Hearing Solutions on July 6 following a collapse in business due to coronavirus and historic liabilities. The business and its assets have been sold to pharmacy hearing services company Pharmhear. As part of the deal, all Hearing Solutions staff were transferred over to Pharmhear’s office which is based at Bristol Road Business Park. The company, which offers hearing tests at home and a range of hearing aids, including rechargeable ones, is a good fit with Pharmhear, an independent hearing aid supplier with a nationwide team of field-based audiologists.

Appeal for MP3 players BRISTOL Dementia Action Alliance (BDAA) is asking wholesalers to provide them with MP3 players in bulk at a reasonable price. The Purple Angel Campaign has been offering free MP3 players to hospitals and care homes for some years because of the benefits of music. BDAA has provided some of these players in Bristol hospitals and some care homes. If a person with dementia is distressed, listening to music can calm them down, which has benefits for staff in A & E. To contact BDAA see their website.

A POWERFUL portrait of a Bristol pharmacist who’s served on the NHS front line throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, has been captured by acclaimed photographer Rankin, as part of a collection to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the NHS. Ade Williams, a Superintendent Pharmacist from Bedminster who also works in a team with his wife Jess at Kellaway Pharmacy, was selected to be photographed for the collection, which will be showcased at local bus stops, roadside billboards as well as iconic pedestrian areas including the Piccadilly Lights in central London. In a mark of respect and thanks to the NHS, the renowned photographer, who has previously shot the Rolling Stones, Kate Moss and the Queen, offered to take portraits of 12 people across the country playing a vital role in the NHS response to COVID-19. British photographer and director Rankin, said: “As the coronavirus pandemic began to unfold, I was moved by the incredible efforts of people across the NHS and I wanted to document who they are and their role in fighting this disease.” Ade Williams said: “The shoot was really fun and what I liked the most is that you could tell it meant a lot to Rankin, that he really wanted to use his lens to tell our stories through the pictures.”

n HOME IMPROVEMENT

Adapting your home or bathroom can increase independence Unfortunately, as people age, most houses become increasingly difficult to live in independently. The thought of moving house is not surprisingly very unappealing to most older people, many of whom have lived in their home for several decades. Children were raised in these homes, memories created. This is where home adaptations can help. Through a few relatively simple changes, homes can be made liveable in again and independence restored to the homeowner, giving a new lease of life not only to the property but also the person or people living there. There have even been studies that have shown how minor adaptations like accessible bathrooms not only help people stay in their homes, but they prevent falls and injuries, improving everyday activities and self-esteem.

We help hundreds of people every year to carry on living at home through a few small adaptations. We work directly with trusted tradespeople and make sure everything happens on schedule. We even handle all the finances, ensuring the contractors are only paid when you are completely satisfied with the finished work. We provide you with a dedicated project manager who will manage the entire process from start to finish and you will receive a personalised plan so you know what is happening and when. We are the only local bathroom provider with an in-house occupational therapist (OT) who can give you a personal assessment (the cost of this is deducted from your quote if you decide to go ahead with us as your chosen contractor). Our OT will visit you at home to get the best

understanding of your needs and wishes, taking your health and wellbeing into consideration. We recently fit a bathroom for Margaret after she had been living in respite care for nearly 5 months following a fall where she broke her arm. She had been told that she would not get full movement back in her arm and her daughter Sue was concerned about her falling. Margaret said she “was impressed by how tidy and considerate the builder was. I really think the new shower is fantastic. It’s such a help. And it was all so quick!”. In fact, it took just 10 weeks from the OT assessment to the new bathroom being finished. Sue added, “It’s a weight off my mind to know that my mum can relax and enjoy her new shower at the same time as staying safe.”

Rooms needed for asylum seekers BRISTOL Hospitality Network (BHN) is appealing for people in Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym to help those seeking sanctuary by offering a spare room for free. Currently many asylum seekers are being housed in hotels but once businesses start to take their rooms back, these people will end up on the streets. The organisation is keen to find a room, or a self-contained annex, which can be offered for free for a period of 3-6 months to house someone seeking asylum and experiencing destitution, perhaps from Iraq, Syria or Palestine. For more information see: www.bhn.org.uk/community If you have a spare room and would like to help please email laura@bhn.org.uk or call for a chat on 07544 917 885.

n INSIDE OUT

Macrame and why we love it (again) INTERIOR design trends have for several years been predicted to include revived 1970s fashions like rattan, terrazzo, wicker and macrame. There is evidence that decorative hand-knotting techniques were practiced in ancient times all over the world, but what we think of as macrame today is thought to have originated from Moorish culture and travelled to England in the 17th Century through Spain. There is debate around the origin of the word macrame and whether it is 13th Century Arabic ‘migramah' meaning fringe, or Turkish ‘makrama’ meaning towel. Both make sense, just think of striped cotton hammam towels with tasseled edges. A versatile technique, knotting can be applied to not only clothing like shawls and veils but jewellery, bags and perhaps the most popular purpose at the moment, hanging planters which offer great scope for embellishment with beads. Macrame was hugely popular in Victorian times, but it is the Bohemian 1970s associations that are driving its renaissance today - the non-traditional, nature-loving, simple living, creativity, the artisanal. Never so desperately have people needed to get outdoors to connect with nature or to unplug with hands-on, tangible craft activities for mental wellbeing, even before lockdown necessitated the acquisition of new hobbies.

Bristol is home to several macrame-makers and one brand, Skye And The Moon, stands out as it encompasses all of those ideals as well as lunar inspiration - the feminine energy of the zeitgeist. Crucially all of Skye’s creations are made with 100% recycled cotton rope or t-shirt yarn. The coloured threads are not dyed but instead fibres of shredded textiles in various colours, all production waste rescued from landfill, are carefully mixed to create the perfect shade. After that they are spun into thread anew. If time or dexterity are not your friends it is easy to buy small items like keyrings right up to large scale wall hangings. “I would love a macrame curtain,” says Skye. “I have seen some beautiful pictures of them being used at weddings. It would be lovely to have one hanging in a doorway, it would be like an entrance to a magical kingdom.” Just the escapism we all need right now! Lonely goat herd THE only two goats left in Avon Gorge will have to wait for new companions because of the coronavirus pandemic. Bristol City Council was planning to restock the herd in “goat gully” but those plans have been delayed by Covid-19. Six wild Kashmiri goats were introduced into the steep section of the gorge by Seawalls in 2011 to control scrub growth and restore rare wildflowers and grasses. But the number has dwindled to two since then as the goats either succumbed to old age or fell to their deaths. Two goats died of old age last year and two were chased off the cliffs by dogs in separate incidents in 2017. The council’s grounds supervisor, Ben Skuse, said plans to travel to the Great Orme in Wales to get four more goats had been delayed by the pandemic. In a report to the Downs Committee on June 29, he said: “In terms of the goats, there was a plan to travel to the Great Orme in June to get four more animals to restock our herd to six animals. Due to Covid this plan

has been delayed.” Mr Skuse said he would update the committee with future plans at a later date. The Great Orme is a limestone headland on the north coast of Wales, northwest of the town of Llandudno. The Avon Gorge runs through a limestone ridge and is the only place in the world where the rare Bristol onion and Bristol rock cress grow. The Kashmiri goats were brought in to

graze in the gorge because they eat woody plants in preference to the rare plant species because of their primitive stomachs. The area they graze – a section which drops sharply away from the plateau at the top to the south of the Seawalls section of Clifton Down – has become known as “goat gully”.
