Residents get a glimpse of the potential for the five-acre site to benefit the community

Developers seek ideas for St Christopher's site THE extent of the former St Christopher's site and its facilities was revealed in a series of guided walks held in July. There are 93,000 sq ft of buildings at the fiveacre site in Westbury Park, including the Grade-II listed Grace House, a Steiner teaching block dating from the mid-1960s, specifically designed for disabled children. The two historic lodges that can

be seen at the entrance to the site will be retained and developed into apartments. An ultra-sustainable, later living community is planned. The developers, keen to engage with residents and local groups, are seeking ideas about how some of the space could be used to complement the needs of local people. Full report: Page 13

Council considers shutting Parry's Lane A ROAD through a large public park in Bristol could be reclaimed as green space to stop van dwellers using it. The one-way section of Parry’s Lane cuts through Durdham Down from the A4018 to Saville Road. It is a popular parking spot for people who live in vans and motorhomes, but residents claim members of the community exhibit anti-social behaviour and dump litter and human waste nearby. Members of campaign group Respect The Downs has called for tougher enforcement of parking restrictions on the roads in the area, and for a ban on overnight sleeping. Now the office of Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees has

proposed addressing the issue either by reviewing existing parking restrictions to make them easier to enforce, or closing the affected stretch of Parry’s Lane and turning it back into green space. The land would become part of Durdham Down, which is owned by Bristol City Council. The idea was put before the committee that manages The Downs on July 5 for their “in principle” agreement to manage the extra bit of park land should the council decide to close the road. The Downs Committee assented, but with several provisos, including assurances about a future location for the van dwellers. Green councillor Paula

O’Rourke said she would not support the adoption of the land by the committee unless the council agreed to provide an alternative site for the members of the community. “I feel very strongly about it,” she said. “[I agree] only on the proviso that an alternative site is found for people, because I just think we can’t push this problem away to the rest of the city or penalise those people. “We [can’t] just penalise and punish people who are living somewhere where they don’t really have any other choices. “I can remember a really lovely young woman who was here working in the NHS and supporting her parents, and she couldn’t afford anywhere to live,” said Cllr O’Rourke, referring

to a van dweller who spoke to the committee on a previous occasion. Committee chair Lord Mayor Steve Smith, who as councillor for Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze also represents residents opposed to the van dwellers, said the mayor’s office was well aware of the committee’s position on the provision of an alternative site for the van dwellers on Parry’s Lane. He said the office also understood that the committee would need to see a detailed plan and costings before giving their final agreement to manage the land if it is reinstated as part of The Downs. Clean air zone delayed until next summer

BRISTOL’S much delayed Clean Air Zone will be introduced in the summer of 2022, with citizens and businesses receiving a strengthened package of support to help them adapt to the changes. The scheme, which was expected to come into force this Autumn, will charge older and more polluting vehicles to drive through the city centre. The Clean Air Zone is designed to tackle the pollution level in Bristol which kills 300 people a year. Bristol City Council worked closely with the government’s Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) to ensure the additional support, with the implementation of the zone meaning the city will remain on track to reduce pollution caused by traffic to within legal limits by 2023, a date that has been brought forward significantly since work started on the clean air zone.

Nearly three-quarters of vehicles (71 per cent) travelling into the zone are already clean enough and won’t be charged. A loans and grants scheme to help citizens and businesses upgrade their vehicles will be launched in the autumn of 2021. All residents inside the zone with a non-compliant vehicle will be offered a one-year exemption to give them time to apply for financial support to switch to a cleaner vehicle or different way of travelling. In addition, more people will now be eligible for financial support after Bristol City Council raised its low-income threshold from £24,000 to £27,000 by early 2022. Other support measures will help local bus and coach companies to buy cleaner vehicles or upgrade existing vehicles and businesses upgrade to cleaner vehicles. The plans also include

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps • Free planning & design service

£720,000 for a new cycle scheme through Old Market that will provide the missing link on one of the city’s key cycle routes between the new segregated Baldwin Street cycle lane and the Bristol to Bath Railway Path. Free electric bike loans, cycle training, free bus tickets, discounted car club membership and support to buy electric cars will also be available to encourage more people to travel differently and use cleaner and more sustainable transport. Patients and visitors to Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) patients and visitors will be exempt from the Clean Air Zone charge. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “I am delighted that by taking our time to work through the data in detail we have been able to bring forward the date we will reach compliance to clean Bristol’s air. “The Clean Air Zone is a complex project. We’re working

closely with the government to get it right and get the best deal for Bristol residents and businesses. “We’ve gained valuable insight from the introduction of Clean Air Zones in other cities and I’m pleased we’ve been able to strengthen our proposals to provide a significant package of support and give people more time to prepare for the zone. “We don’t want to charge people, we want to provide the opportunity to work with us – hopefully, switching to a cleaner vehicle and walking or cycling for shorter journeys as well as using public transport.”

n NEWS July has seen the lifting of Covid-19 legal restrictions and the reopening of facilities - but also cases at an all-time high. Professor Debbie Stark, PHE South West Regional Director and NHS Regional Director of Public Health for the South West, writes for the Voice on how we can help keep ourselves and others safe CASES are increasing in the South West and they are expected to rise further over the coming weeks, especially as we mix more. Rising cases remain a problem because, although deaths and hospitalisations are lower thanks to the success of the vaccination programme, Covid-19 is a virus you really do not want to catch. It can still make you very sick, and many people suffering from long Covid are experiencing ill effects weeks and months after they tested positive. The risks of falling ill are especially great for those who have not yet had both doses of the vaccine. In the South West 65% of people have had both doses, but this means 35% are not fully protected and are still at risk. We also know that no vaccine is 100%

Let's show sense and courtesy

effective. Vulnerable groups are also at higher risk of more serious illness if they catch Covid and not everyone in this group will have been vaccinated. Getting both jabs and completing your vaccination course is the only way to ensure strong protection against the virus, so it remains vital people keep coming forward for the vaccine. The more protection we have, the more we minimise the impact of a

rise in cases this summer. We know the virus is present, we know it can make us very sick, we also know that 1 in 3 of us with Covid won’t display any symptoms. So if we’re in crowded spaces or on public transport, do wear a mask and try to keep a distance, especially whilst rates are going up. Also remember to keep washing your hands thoroughly and more often than usual, especially before and after getting on public transport or getting in from work,

shops or the pub etc. Meet outside where you can and if meeting inside, make sure the space is well ventilated. Importantly, we will still have a responsibility to look out for one another as we have done over the past 16 months and show courtesy to one another. If you are feeling unwell, don’t risk passing on the virus and making others sick - self-isolate and get a test. We should still also be taking up the offer of twice weekly LFD tests. If others around us are wearing a mask, let us be respectful and keep a distance - they may be feeling uneasy about the reopening or be conscious they may be protecting others by wearing one. If we know we are meeting up with friends and family, minimise the risk of passing on the virus by meeting outside as much as possible. By thinking of others, recognising these sensitivities and showing respect, we can make this transition safer for everyone.

Book amnesty as libraries reopen fully BRISTOL libraries will be reopening their doors next week and are offering people the chance to return any overdue books without having to pay the fines. It has been a confusing year, with varied opening arrangements across the library service, so the team are giving everyone three months to hunt behind the sofa for any outstanding books, and bring them back to their local library without facing a penalty. If books are not returned, the library service will have to spend additional money to replace them. Libraries will continue to offer a number of measures to keep staff and customers safe. These include screens for help desks, hand sanitiser units and computers will remain more spaced out where possible. All libraries will be well ventilated. Visitors are still encouraged to wear masks to protect library staff and other library users, but there will be no restrictions on time spent in the library, and no requirement to book computers in advance. NHS Test and Trace will still be available but on a voluntary basis. The 23 libraries that are currently offering services will return to normal opening hours over the next two weeks, starting from Monday July 19. It may take up to two weeks

to return to normal as layouts are changed back to allow for full browsing and use of the computers. Deputy Mayor Councillor Asher Craig, who has responsibility for libraries, said: “It has been a tough year for everyone, and we appreciate that returning library books was probably not top of people’s ‘to-do list’ in recent months. That’s why we wanted to wipe the slate clean and allow everyone to bring back any books they find at home without fear of picking up a penalty. “We know that not everyone has felt comfortable returning to a library, so now is the chance to bring your books back – no

questions asked! “I also want to say a massive thank you to the library team, who have done a magnificent job of moving so many activities and events online to help keep people entertained during such difficult times.” There are four libraries that remain closed - Hartcliffe, St. Paul’s, Lockleaze and Avonmouth – and the service are working with the owners of these buildings to reopen them as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the first floor of the Central Library will remain closed while the library team make some changes to their accessibility and evacuation process. This means that the public toilets, including the accessible toilet, will be temporarily closed. Public computers, including the accessible desks and computers, have been moved to the ground floor. First floor closures will also affect room hire at Southmead, Clifton, Henleaze, Bishopston and Junction 3 libraries. For information on joining, new opening hours and all the services you can access at home, please visit www.bristol.gov.uk/ libraries-archives or search Bristol Libraries online.

MBST Bristol: Real results in real people MBST: an award-winning innovation designed to manage long-term injury, osteoarthritis and elite sports injuries.

James Scrimshaw and Jonathan Webb (Consultant Knee Surgeon) at Cura’s MBST Clinic in Westbury-on-Trym

MBST is a therapeutic adaptation of MRI used to treat osteoarthritis and soft tissue damage. Unlike an MRI, MBST doesn’t create an image but it does use the same energy to stimulate a significant repair response in damaged tissue and joints. Here at Cura’s Westbury-on-Trym Clinic in Bristol, over 90% of the patients we’ve treated have improved levels of pain, joint mobility and stability. Our patients range in age from 21 (generally with trauma or sports injuries) to those in their 80s. Many patients have osteoarthritic change in necks, backs, hips, knee or ankle joints. Most often, these patients are not yet ready for surgery but are suffering with mild to moderate stage of joint damage and some considerable pain. For this group, the results from MBST treatment really are extremely impressive.

Here are some of the patients Cura’s Clinical Director, James Scrimshaw, has treated with MBST: Mick (58) began suffering with osteoarthritis in both ankles about 20 years ago. Over that time, his condition has steadily worsened until he was hobbling in the mornings and struggling with Osteoarthritis

Cartilage damage

Back & disc problems

Ligament, tendon & muscle damage

Bone conditions & fractures

Sports & accident injuries

uneven ground. Mick ended up not being able to walk the dog due to the pain. Anyone living with osteoarthritis will recognise how it shrinks your quality of life. After being told he needed double ankle fusions, Mick came to Cura for a course of MBST. A month after treatment he had significant positive signs of change. Two months later, he reported no severe bouts of pain and within four months his condition was 80% improved. Mick’s life is now very different and he has avoided having to undergo surgery. And best of all, he now volunteers at the donkey sanctuary several hours every day with no after effects. Marlene (80+) has suffered with chronic neck and back pain for years. Over that time, we used chiropractic treatment but her condition began to deteriorate and hands-on treatment became less effective over time. We decided to use MBST to treat her spinal osteoarthritis and as a result, Marlene’s condition is transformed! She’s pain free and hasn’t needed as much ongoing hands-on treatment. She’s also just finished a course on her knees to help with mild to moderate joint changes to which she’s responded really well. She’s an all-round great healer! MBST isn’t just for patients with arthritis. We’ve recently had the pleasure of working with professional sports teams such as the Bristol Bears. Jack Targett, Head of Recovery and Medical Logistics for the Bears said, “We are recently new to using MBST as a team and have become more frequent in using this modality to aid our recovery and return to performance for some of our players. We have noticed a big benefit from using the MBST facilities and have had great outcomes. James at CURA has been very accommodating in fitting around our tight schedules.”

Will's upping the game at tennis club HENLEAZE Lawn Tennis Club committee are thrilled to congratulate Head Coach, Will Hardiman on attaining his Level 4 coaching qualification. This course develops understanding of advanced tactical and technical skills as well as covering aspects of running a programme. Will was appointed as Head Coach to start on April 1st 2020, not the best date to start a new job as it turned out! Undeterred by lockdown, he put plans in place to get the new coaching programme up and running for when lockdown lifted and launched the new programme at the end of May 2020. The programme has grown steadily, and many children and adults now enjoy improving their tennis at Henleaze under Will’s diligent eye. Last October Will signed up to the Level 4 course which would take one 3-day weekend a month, over five months, to complete. The original aim was

to complete by the end of March and be ready for the busy season. Lockdown disruption meant the course was postponed after two of the weekends and it has taken considerable organisation, plus working seven days a week, to complete the training during the busy summer term. Will expressed thanks to his coaching team for putting in extra hours to cover his absences to attend his course. As a national level junior, Will comes with strong player credentials. He has demonstrated his passion for the game and is keen to help everyone, of any age or ability, improve their game. The programme at the club is comprehensive and appreciated by many as can be seen by the number of returners each term. n NEWS MORE than £38,000 has been raised by daring fundraisers for St Peter’s Hospice after they abseiled down the Castlemead building in Bristol Supporters of all ages took on the 242ft descent down Bristol’s tallest building. Marvin Rees, Bristol’s Mayor, joined other participants to step over the edge. He said: “I had a chance to visit St Peter’s Hospice a couple of years ago and had a very special afternoon with staff, residents and families. It is an amazing Bristol charity, supporting local people in our area when they need it most. “It’s an honour to be able to do anything to show my support. The Hospice is there for all of us, whatever our background. It has been taking care of us for years and has touched the lives of hundreds of families in Bristol. “It’s the only adult Hospice caring for local people with lifelimiting illnesses. The Hospice’s state of the art centre was built with Bristolians’ support, to support Bristolians. “We’ve seen so many incredible fundraising efforts over the last year or so. If you’re feeling inspired to take on a challenge, just go for it!”

Young carer Hanna earns Diana Award HANNA Sampson, aged 18, from Bishopston, has been recognised with the highest accolade a young person can achieve for social action or humanitarian efforts – The Diana Award. Established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, the Award has the support of both her sons, The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke of Sussex. This year is especially significant as it marks what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday. Hanna has been raising awareness of the needs of young carers and has been an influential advocate and an inspirational mentor to others. She was nominated for the Diana Award by Bristol and South Gloucestershire Young Carers who she’s been working with over the past few years. “My younger sister is autistic,” says Hanna. “I've provided emotional support to my sister and parents, helping to calm her down when she’s agitated. I’ve been able to give physical support, such as helping with bathing and my sister’s medication. It has been my normal experience but it can take its toll, making me feel tired and drained.” As a member of ‘Young Carers Voice’, Hanna has campaigned for understanding and support to meet young carers’

Hanna filming a training video for staff at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston about the needs and experiences of young carers in hospitals educational and mental health needs. Hanna has drawn on her first-hand experience with courage, enriching her campaigning and leading to her speaking in parliament, campaigning in the media and working with the NHS to highlight issues young carers face. Hanna participated in the development of a film ‘Who Cares in School’, which led to a

130 percent increase in schools registering to young carers programmes. A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who looks after a family member with a disability, long term illness, mental health condition or substance misuse. It is estimated there are about 700,000 young carers in the UK with the average age being just 12 years old. Hanna says: “Princess Diana represents equality and unconditional kindness. She stood up for what she believed and inspired so many people that anyone can make a difference. It is a true honour to be nominated in her legacy and a huge motivator to keep pushing for awareness about young carers and their needs, not just in Bristol but the country as a whole.” Hanna has completed her A levels at North Bristol Post 16 Centre and plans to study Psychology at university. Tessy Ojo, CEO of The Diana Award, says: “We congratulate all our new Diana Award recipients from the UK and around the globe who are changemakers for their generation. We know by receiving this honour they will inspire more young people to get involved in their communities and begin their own journey as active citizens.”

Buildings to be retained in the St Christopher's site redevelopment THE former St Christopher’s School on Westbury Park opened for tours of the site on July 14. About one hundred residents attended the six walkaround sessions. Behind the gates lies a huge, hidden gem of land bordering the Downs on one side and Westbury Park School on the other. There are 93,000 sq ft of buildings, including the Grade-II listed Grace House, a Steiner teaching block dating from the mid-1960s, specifically designed for disabled children. The two historic lodges that can be seen at the entrance to the site will be retained and developed into apartments. The guided walks, organised by MPC Consultancy, are part of a provisional programme with the development partnership to engage immediate neighbours of the site and people living in the wider Westbury Park area, to see the extent of the five-acre site itself and to learn more about the partners who are bringing forward proposals for the site’s redevelopment. An ultra-sustainable, later living community is planned for the Westbury Park site, refurbishing the two lodges and adding new development. Ethical investor FORE Partnership and extra care operator Amicala are working with developer First Base on plans for a net zero extra care scheme with an emphasis on sustainability. It will become a community for people in early retirement but who are otherwise active and wish to continue to use facilities nearby such as Waitrose, the Downs, independent shops and the hospitals. centre and swimming pool will be on-site, and these may be facilities that are open to local residents. The next phase of consultation (in the autumn) will involve more detailed sessions with the first early sketches of the scheme. Before that, FORE, Amicala and First Base will be continuing to engage with residents and are very keen to hear ideas for temporary uses on the site that can involve the community, and

Metro Mayor praises NHS apprentices AS the NHS celebrated its 73rd Birthday in July, Metro Mayor Dan Norris met front line NHS heroes who are studying for apprenticeships at Southmead Hospital. The visit was a part of the Metro Mayor’s Jobs and Skills Summit. Suzanne Ashwood, a Senior Healthcare Support Worker, explained to the Mayor the skills she is learning as part of her Level 3 apprenticeship. She said: “It was a great opportunity to meet the Mayor and promote the apprenticeship scheme at North Bristol NHS Trust, which has helped me so much, personally and professionally. “Three years ago, I started at North Bristol Trust as an apprentice. I remember being on induction and one of the speakers said that the Trust was one of the best employers they had ever worked for. Three years later and I could not agree more. North Bristol Trust will support you in your career and personal development. I genuinely look forward to coming to work and completing my studies.” Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “As we wish the NHS a happy 73rd birthday, it’s inspiring to hear how apprenticeships are providing a fantastic route for more people to join our NHS. It was a pleasure to meet such enthusiastic healthcare assistants who have a passion for their caring work and studies. I know that with people like this our NHS is in safe hands.” Jacqui Marshall, Director of People and Transformation

at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “Our apprentices are a vital part of our workforce at North Bristol NHS Trust. Each apprentice brings along new skills and a fresh perspective to our organisation which continues to make North Bristol NHS Trust a truly inspiring place to work. After a challenging year for everyone, our apprentices have continued to provide invaluable support to our organisation while continuing with their studies, always showing enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and for that, I would like to say thank you. “We were absolutely delighted to welcome Mayor Dan Norris to Southmead Hospital today and show him the great work our apprentices do.”

Redmaids' High students score highly at IB SIXTH Formers across the globe have battled through lockdown, disruption, online learning and uncertainty through two of the most important years in their school life. At the start of July, Year 13s at Redmaids’ High School were rewarded for the resilience and determination they have shown throughout, when their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results were released. Grades were outstanding across the board with an average score of 42, far outreaching the global average of 33 points. As an example, Oxford University requires a score of 38. Furthermore, the entire cohort achieved the top grade of 7 in Art, Geography, Latin, Psychology, Physics and Chemistry, and all achieved a 6 or 7 in Global Politics, Spanish, Italian, Biology and History. Due to the pandemic, there were no exams this year, but marks were awarded based on predicted grades, moderated

teacher assessments and coursework marked by the IB awarding body. The qualification, which is one of the two Sixth Form pathways available at Redmaids' High, allows students to study a wide range of subjects concurrently, demonstrating a depth and breadth of knowledge to future employers.

Former Head Girl Saskia achieved an astonishing score of 45, the top mark possible, and will be studying Maths at University College London. Another student Kenisha also achieved 45 points, and will be studying Medicine at Bristol University. Less than 1% of IB students attain this score worldwide.

IB Coordinator at Redmaids’ High, Pete Brealey said: “We are so proud of what this group has achieved, particularly in such an unusual time. They embodied the spirit of the IB, as a collaborative, supportive, learning community, and it has shown through in their outstanding results.”

n EDUCATION AN eight-year-old footballer is following in the footsteps of his brother and has signed a contract for Cheltenham Town Football Club. Africa Murray, an eight year old pupil at Westbury-on-Trym CofE Academy, has been training with the under 8s and was asked to come for trials. He was familiar with the Cheltenham players, their training regime, the coaches and the academy ethos as his 12-year-old brother Kingston plays for the club. Africa aced the trial and received a call asking him to sign for the club. He was praised for his strong character, great attitude, high technical ability and good balance. Mum, Sam, says that this is a great achievement for her son as he was hospitalised for a month when he was just over one year old and placed on a feeding tube and oxygen. Africa has a condition whereby his body can’t break down Vitamin D so he has to take supplements that go straight into his system to keep him healthy. He fought through the illness and has made great

He’s a great fan of Ronaldo and his work effort and has recently enjoyed reading Marcus Rashford’s book.” His brother Kingston, is now in his fifth year at Cheltenham Town, having recently signed a new contract with the club. He was chuffed to be chosen by the other team players for the Player’s Player award this year. Sam added: This has been such a boost for both boys and we can see that the football club really nurtures the young players. School has been so supportive too. “Africa’s excited to play at the pre-season DNA Cup Tournament at St George’s Park where England play. He’s going to be playing against youth teams from Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham and all the top clubs.”

Bristol Free School students earn Science Learner of the Year awards THE outstanding achievements of Jacob Cook and Saber Rahman from Bristol Free School and Sixth Form were celebrated in July as they were awarded Gold and Silver for the BTEC Award for Science Learner of the Year 2021. Gold award winner Jacob is a trailblazer for his school. One of the first students to take Applied Science at BFS, he has proved to be a fantastic role model. His forensic attention to detail and scientific rigour means he researches topics in depth. As his scientific skills have grown, so has his ability and confidence. He has become a Science Ambassador for the school supporting learners who are struggling – even creating and running a lockdown science project the whole school could take part in. Saber, silver winner, is a compassionate and diligent student. He is an active member of the school council and has mentored many younger students by assisting in their science lessons. His selfless and caring nature made him a fantastic role model. He has worked immensely hard throughout the sixth form and is an integral part of the school community. He has developed extensive scientific skills and knowledge throughout the course. Jacob said: “I am extremely shocked and unbelievably pleased to win this award. It is a fantastic recognition for myself and the school who have inspired me in many ways during my BTEC course and beyond.” Susan King, headteacher of BFS, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news. The BFS community is so proud of Jacob and Saber. "Both students and BFS’ Science department have worked so hard, despite the many challenges this year. We all now live in a scientific age and one I am sure Jacob and Saber will thrive in. “To win the BTEC Award for Science Learner of the Year 2021 Award is a great achievement! Jacob Cook has been an outstanding BFS student

Headteacher Susan King (left) and Biology teacher Jessica Hawes (right) celebrate the BTEC Science awards presented to Jacob Cook and Saber Rahman in his time with us and I am sure this will not be the end of his achievements.” Jessica Hawes, head of biology for BFS, said: “It has been a pleasure to teach both students on the inaugural BTEC Applied Science course. I have also been fortunate to be their form tutor and see the impact these students have had school wide. Huge congratulations to Jacob and Saber alongside the rest of the class. I couldn’t be prouder!” Cindy Rampersaud, senior vice president for BTEC and apprenticeships at Pearson, said: “2021 has been another extraordinary year for our BTEC learners, tutors, teachers, colleges and schools and I am delighted that today we are able to come together and celebrate this year’s winners - and all of the individuals who will be awarded a BTEC qualification this year. The hard work and commitment demonstrated by our award winners, all of whom have achieved great things during a time of unprecedented disruption, is extraordinary and I am proud we are able to celebrate their achievements.” Outstanding learners, tutors, teachers, colleges and schools saw their achievements recognised in the 11th annual BTEC awards ceremony, held online for the second year running due to coronavirus. Among those presenting awards were BTEC alumni including Academy Award-

winning producer and head of film and animation at ScreenSkills, Gareth Ellis-Unwin, entrepreneur Jamal Edwards MBE, and actress Lucy Fallon. Nearly one million learners

across the globe completed BTEC courses over the past year. The career-focused qualifications are a vital route for those pursuing careers in sectors such as IT, business, the creative industries, healthcare, engineering, construction and future industries. Jonathan Ledger, skills specialist at The Department for International Trade, commented: “I must emphasise the importance of BTEC as a careerfocused type of qualification and that for me is key. This is all about delivering the right skills to the right people at the right time in the right way and BTEC qualifications do just that. For me, BTEC qualifications are a game changer. They change lives and they help people improve and contribute to business and society in a big way.

n EDUCATION SECONDARY school pupils in Bristol will be able to learn more about Bristol’s involvement in the transatlantic traffic in enslaved Africans thanks to a new textbook. A group of eight Bristol history teachers have been working together over recent months to improve available teaching materials about Bristol’s historic links to slavery in collaboration with Bristol Museums. The group consulted on the text book with leading academics and black teachers in Bristol and London, along with a Bristol-based network of African and African-Caribbean community organisations, African Voices Forum, as well as local teaching experts from the University of Bristol. Together they have supplemented the existing curriculum so that schoolchildren in Bristol have a better chance of fully understanding this part of Bristol’s story. The new A4 colour textbook

‘Bristol and Transatlantic Slavery: origins, impact and legacy’ is aimed at Year 8 students. M Shed is providing all the images of objects, archive documents and artworks from its collections which will illustrate the textbook, and are

Councillor Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor - Communities, Equalities and Public Health, at Bristol City Council said: “Bristol has a unique history and our teaching community wanted to develop some new and engaging resources to teach secondary school pupils about this part of our city’s past. It will be a great way to help tell Bristol’s story to those growing up in the city and future generations.” The textbook has been written in consultation with local academics, museum experts and teachers, to make sure that it is accurate and inclusive. The content covers the period from 1440 right up to the

events of last year as well as the legacies of the traffic in enslaved Africans in the city. Cashan Campbell, Assistant Vice Principal, at Fairfield High School said: “The textbook is an opportunity to provide a quality learning resource for all students, regardless of their race, heritage, and identity. As a black educator that has grown up in the city and who attended the school I now teach and lead in, I truly believe that representation is vital. “It is so important for all students, especially black students, to understand that Black History is not just about slavery. can feel because of this textbook and that is not only exciting but demonstrates that a time of change is upon us. “By incorporating this textbook in our curriculum, in our library and as a listed resource on our school website, it will ensure that students can learn and ask questions. Ultimately, those questions will enable more research and discovery pertaining to Black History, understanding the context of the city we live in and reflecting on the changes that have happened and where we would like to continue to go in the future.” Professor Tim Cole, Chair of the We Are Bristol History Commission, said: “After the toppling of the Colston statue in June 2020, the history found on the streets of our city became much debated - not only in Bristol but far beyond. One thing that has struck me about some of these debates is that they raise bigger questions about what history is and why

it matters. Sometimes history is seen as primarily being a way to boost national or local pride. In that version, history is something we use to create an identity based on a shared story of achievement. “But there is another way of thinking about history and its role in the present. As an opportunity for critical reflection – not to judge the past, but to learn from it and reflect upon it. This is a book that takes that approach and asks us to explore the complexity of Transatlantic Slavery and the various ways that its legacies can still be seen on the streets of our city. It is a book that invites us to critically examine the past, but also to critically question the present and so reimagine the future together.” Schools interested in purchasing the textbook should contact: museumbookings@bristol. gov.uk

Children unite for summer of singing

Beacon’s partnership with national singing organisation Sing Up (www.singup.org/ summer-of-singing). This event is Bristol Beacon’s celebration of Sing Up Day 2021, which took place on the following day.

Chris Green, education manager at Bristol Beacon said “We’re so excited that we’re able to hold this event this year for KS2 children across the city. Although it’s a little different to the end of year celebration

we’d usually hold, I know how hard the schools have worked in preparing the children and they have a great time.” CBBC Presenter and special guest Naomi Wilkinson said “I’m delighted to be taking part in this year's combined Primary Orchestra and singing event with Bristol Beacon. Music has always been a big part of my life and I’m thrilled that so many children are taking part. After all the challenges young people have had to endure this past year, it’s incredibly uplifting to unite our voices and make some fabulous music!”

THE first combined virtual event for the primary schools’ singers and musicians across Bristol took place on June 29. Over 1,500 children were involved from local schools including Horfield Primary, Shirehampton Primary and Redmaids’ High Junior School. Special guest Naomi Wilkinson from CBBC hosted the event which was broadcast live from Horfield C of E Primary School. The event was conducted by teacher Kirsten Cunningham and Bristol Beacon’s Laurie Stewart, and streamed to schools across Bristol for Key Stage 2 children to unite in singing and playing together.    The theme of the event was ‘Heroes’, which celebrates all the ‘heroes’ the children have seen over the last 18 months that have brought positivity to them and their communities.   The programme has been largely drawn from Bristol

Transforming transport in Bristol BRISTOL needs a transformative approach to transport. For decades, the city’s political leadership took a patch and mend approach to transport, leaving us ill-equipped to meet the growing challenges we face as a city. A population that will grow by 100,000 by 2050, an ecological crisis that demands greener and more sustainable travel options, our moral and legal responsibility to improve Bristol’s air quality. Bristol's status in 2021 as the only Core City without a mass transit system is unsustainable, we as a city need to evolve to meet our transport challenges. With that in mind, I was pleased to announce the appointment of our Cabinet Member for Transport: Don Alexander. His appointment will give us renewed leadership on the development of transport in Bristol. Transport represents more than just movement, it's about connection. Connection of deprived areas to opportunities, connection of vulnerable people

to services, connection of the public to the needs of the environment and, as Councillor Alexander has pointed out, connection to one another. Councillor for Avonmouth and Lawrence Weston, Don is a bus-rider and understands the importance of a reliable, fast, and sustainable bus network. He is prepared to focus on reinvigorating the bus services to remind the public of their value and to reduce car dependency, and on advancing the improvements to buses that we have begun during the past five years. Before Covid we were the only city in England outside London where bus passenger numbers were rising. We have a cleaner bus fleet, with investment of more than £30 million since 2015 delivering 142 buses (including 99 biogas buses) in Bristol that meet the highest emission standards. The Bristol Bus Deal has invited all operators in Bristol to help improve their peak hour services

and started with the doubling of frequency of First Bus’s number 2 route. By investing in infrastructure to support sustainable options, we make buses a realistic alternative. Going forward, Don will be working with the One City Transport Groups as well as Each month Bristol mayor First Bus and Network Rail on Marvin Rees shares his views the delivery of walking and with Henleaze & Westbury Voice cycling upgrades, more park and ride sites and the Joint Local Transport Plan. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

What matters most to you? IN June, I launched my Police and Crime Survey as an opportunity for residents across Avon and Somerset to tell me what policing issues matter most to them. The 12-week long survey, which only takes 10 minutes to complete, includes a number of questions focusing on my draft Police and Crime Plan priorities and objectives. These objectives cover a range of police topics, including anti-social behaviour, burglary, hate crime, rural crime, domestic abuse and how you want the police to be open and transparent. It is essential that, as your PCC, I am listening to all communities and their concerns, and that is why I want as many local people as possible to share their views on these draft objectives. My priorities and objectives

are the cornerstone of my Police and Crime Plan, a legal document that sets out the policing of the area, how the Chief Constable will be held to account and how I will use your money – taxpayers’ money – to deliver an effective and efficient police service and support other services, such as victim support providers. In my role as PCC, I am the bridge between local people and the police, and it is absolutely essential that I hear from as many of you as possible, including victims of crime, about my proposed Police and Crime Plan and the direction I am setting for Avon and Somerset Police. When I came into the role, I promised I would make Avon and Somerset a safer place for everyone, and part of achieving this is listening to your views,

thoughts and concerns. The survey is an opportunity for you to tell me what you want your police service to focus on. To complete the survey online, visit avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk/ about/police-and-crime-survey. Last month, we were told by the Prime Minister that there was to be a big lifting of lockdown restrictions. Most of the coronavirus rules we have lived with since last March, including face masks, social distancing and working from home were set to end on July 19 thanks to the roll-out of the vaccines. Despite the fact that life is closer than ever to returning to ‘normal’, I encourage you to remain vigilant, take personal responsibility and be aware of others around you. We have lived with these restrictions for a considerable amount of time –

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford longer than any of us expected – and not everyone will be as comfortable walking around with no face mask on or being in close proximity to others. Let’s be sensible and, together, ensure we do not have to take a step backwards at any point in the future.

n HOME CARE & FUNDING

Tom Jackson, Commercial Lead

Healthy Homes for Bristol Homeowners ACCORDING to the National Center for Healthy Housing, a healthy home is housing that is designed, constructed and maintained in a manner that is conducive to good occupant health. Improving the condition of private sector housing will not only benefit the housing stock but provide significant improvements in independence, health and wellbeing that people experience when they live in a home designed to meet their needs. The cost of making these critical works can be challenging as many of us don’t have the ready finance for home repairs, which can often be costly and unexpected. For homeowners looking to fund these home improvements, social enterprise lender, Lendology, may be able to help. Lendology have worked in partnership with Bristol City Council to provide affordable loans to homeowners across the city for over 15 years. From replacement heating to whole new roofs, to damp remedy and structural repairs, through to updating electrical wiring or plumbing, the works under the loan scheme are varied. Homeowners of any age and employment status can apply, and Lendology offer a range of loan products depending on the needs of the household. A client who recently benefited from the home improvement loan scheme said “Lendology made the cost of replacing my boiler affordable. Without them, I would be stuck in

News and views from our city councillors Sharon Scott (Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze)

• Libraries – I am really pleased that both our local libraries in We stbury and Henleaze are now open aga in for browsing and borrowing books. Henleaze has been open for a while now but Westbury has not been open since last Ma rch. Visitors to our libraries are still encour aged to wear masks to protect library staff and other library users. There will be no restrictions on time spent in the library and no requirement to book computers in adv ance. Libraries will continue to offer a num ber of measures to keep staff and customers safe, including screens for help desks, han d sanitiser units and computers will rem ain more spaced out where possible.

• Roads – I am still receiv ing reports of badly resurfaced roads in the local area. Residents have said that tar is seeping through some of the newly resurf aced roads in patches in these curren t temperatures. So far in total councillors hav e received four reports of badly resurface d roads. Please contact me if you have any such issues on this matter. • Nottingham Knockers – I am very concerned about the am ount of Nottingham Knockers that have been in our area recently. These are peo ple who try to sell stuff at the door like che ap kitchen wares or washing products, wh ich they obtain very cheaply and then sell for very high prices. A lot of the time they say they are ex-army or ex-convicts on a rehabilitation team. They don’t always take no for an answer and can get quite aggressive. If they have knocked on your doo r you can report this by calling 101. If the y are still in your road, you can call 999 as the police are very

eyecareteam@turnersopticians.co.uk www.turnersopticians.co.uk Turners Eye Care Ltd T/A Turners Opticians Incorporated in England & Wales Reg No. 8201460 Subject to availability, T&C’s apply.

O what a month it’s been. We’ve lots to be proud of, whichever of the national football teams you were supporting! If like me you have family from more than one home nation then we’ve even more to be proud of! It’s got me thinking a lot this month. I appreciate that at times thinking can be considered a dangerous thing, but this was reflective thinking. As it led to a feeling of genuine & heartfelt appreciation for my team and all they do in caring for our patients, I think I can be excused for this line of thinking! I’ve written before, on just the odd occasion, about how much I enjoy the work I do. I genuinely feel blessed to be able to meet and care for so many of you year after year as patients. It’s also my privilege to be able to lead the superb team of professionals who look after you in our practices. Now before you think that I’m going to take the credit for carefully and painstakingly hand picking each of them, for who they are, and what they bring to our team, don’t worry I’m not! That honour belongs to our practice manager Nikki, who as operations manager has been central to so many aspects of our success as a team. So to my personal experience. I have recently been experiencing long arm syndrome, or perhaps starting to realise that I was born enough decades ago to need a little extra help focussing up close. With so many clear focus lens options to choose from, again I took the dangerous route of thinking! I decided to try a two pronged approach. For much of my work looking close up at eyes I use a sophisticated microscope. I decided a single vision pair of midrange lenses would work well here, which unsurprisingly they do! For everyday I decided that my general vision would be best suited with a pair of our superb relax lenses - which I can now highly recommend from personal experience. If you’ve yet to try these, they have a relaxed focus at the bottom so you can see your phone or small print easily as well as seeing clearly from the rest of the lens for sharp viewing such as the sports scores on the TV. This second pair will be particularly useful for watching the Olympics, which we shall now be watching, for the first time, in ultra HD multi-screen view. I particularly like the harmony & unity of our home nations competing together under the banner of team GB at the Olympics. Our family can all support the same team for a change! With around 350 hours of competition to watch, there is definitely something for everyone to cheer for. When it comes to your eyes, our vision is that each of you receives world class eye care, which we firmly believe you deserve. Don’t forget, whether it’s for reassuringly thorough eye care, or to make sure you’re definitely getting the best out of the Ultra HD Olympic broadcasts, we’re here when you need us, six days per week. Just get in touch and we’ll be happy to see how we can help you. We continue to offer COVID safe ways to choose your new glasses too! To help us keep you all safe, we’re still asking you all to telephone first to book a time to come in. Please call our Henleaze practice on 0117 962 2474 or our Fishponds practice on 0117 965 4434.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

FINANCE With Richard Higgs BA (hons) CFP FPFS Harold Stephens 50 High Street, Westbury on Trym, Bristol BS9 3DZ T: 0117 3636212 E: office@haroldstephens.co.uk

Making trusts simple WHEN people talk about trusts, they can seem complex and expensive, perhaps potentially only for the super-rich. The reality is they don’t have to be. Put simply, a trust is a vehicle to protect your assets and to guarantee your loved ones financial stability in the future – something we all want to achieve after building a nest egg. There are many reasons to consider placing assets in to a trust and the main concerns people come to us with where a trust could help include: A desire to avoid substantial

inheritance tax. Future-proofing to ensure wealth is passed to the right beneficiaries. Seeking to reduce the amount of money lost to care fees. A trust can be set up during your lifetime, where you can act as a trustee and control what happens to the assets you have gifted within the trust. This protects your assets from inheritance tax by progressively moving them out of your estate. There is also the option to set up a trust in your Will which deals

with the protection of assets after your death. These are commonly used where you may be worried about the impact of care home fees, the divorce of a child or the protection of disabled or vulnerable members of your family. Unlike a Will, you are able to be very specific about what happens to assets within the trust. An example of this would be stipulating that one beneficiary can live in a property but once it is sold, the money should go to a different beneficiary. There are many types of trust, each with slightly different features. The main thing to remember is that there is usually one suitable for everyone as part of a balanced financial plan.

I can talk through this with you (and your family if you wish) and how different trusts may be appropriate for different situations or scenarios you may be concerned about. Please call 0117 363 6212 or email richard@haroldstephens. co.uk or contact us through the website www.haroldstephens. co.uk to book your complimentary estate planning review. Harold Stephens provides friendly financial advice in the local community on a face-to-face basis in a welcoming location at 50, High Street, Westbury on Trym. Harold Stephens was set up to help the retirees of BS9 who are serious about their financial future and want a truly local, independent and friendly service. n FROM OUR MP

More must be done to help 'pingdemic' families Your champion in Bristol I KNOW for many, especially those families with children at school, these past months of juggling school, work and self-isolation have been particularly hard. I too have recently been ‘pinged’ and had to work from home here in Bristol, at the same time as my wife (who works from home), my three-year-old (who was pinged via her nursery bubble) and my two-year-old (who wasn’t pinged but had a temperature)! My big concern continues to be about the amount of time children have been away from school, and my anger at the Government for failing to pay for the amount of catch up that was recommended by the independent ‘catch up’ advisor. I will continue to do all that I can to push the Government to recognise that more help is needed. On the topic of schools, following our survey of parents about school drop off and pick up, I’m pleased to report that after many months of hard work I’ve now secured agreement from Bristol City Council to install double yellow lines around the corner at the bend of Passage Road in Westbury-on-Trym, making it much safer for pupils

coming to and from Westburyon-Trym CofE Academy. I’ve also secured a commitment to a zebra crossing, but this will come as part of other changes to the local road network later. We’ll be reporting on our wider school drop-off survey in a couple of months' time. Many constituents have been asking me what I think we should be doing now that the legal restrictions of mask wearing, and social distance have been lifted. I’m conscious that whilst the legal restrictions have been lifted, our responsibility to be cautious has not. Infection rates are still very high in Bristol and whilst many of us are now privileged to be double-vaccinated, it’s crucial that we continue to think about others as we go about our day-to-day lives. To that end, I will continue to wear my face mask inside and maintain social distance where at all possible. As always, the best thing we can do is get vaccinated. I understand that uptake from 18- to 23-year-olds is not as quick as we would like so, if that’s you, or someone in your household, please encourage them to get vaccinated. You can find out where your nearest vaccine centre is and book for a jab at grabajab. co.uk.

Your voice in Parliament Parliament has now risen for the Summer recess, returning in early September. Whilst this August is sadly not what it might normally be, I continue to encourage my staff to take off a good chunk of time over August and so you will see a little less output from us for the next couple of weeks. The office is still open and staffed, so do get in touch if you need something, but we’ll be back up to full speed in September. I know that many of you are worried about the Government’s planning reforms, which removes much of the rights for local people to be consulted and engaged on developments. It also risks turning high street shops into unsuitable housing, instead of really tackling the issue of business rates reform. I spoke to these concerns with lots of local examples during second reading in the Commons, and I’ll be keeping an eye on the bill as it goes through the Parliament. A similarly important and very complicated bill put forward by the Government is the Health and Care Bill, which will (once again...) re-organise our National Health Service. Unfortunately, the Government gave such little time for debate that it passed second reading in a blink and will now go

Darren Jones writes for the Voice

to committee in the autumn. I also engaged on several other issues from community energy and net zero, to climate change education, (the failure of ) the levelling up agenda and much more. If you’d like to find out more about my wider work, you can visit my Facebook page at www. fb.com/darrenjonesmp and/or sign up to my monthly newsletter via my website. We have also recently revamped my website, which is still at www.darren-jones.co.uk, where you can get in touch to ask for help, ask a question or register for an event. As always, my team and I are here to serve you.

Moving forward into summer with caution

L

ife should not be lived looking out of the rearview mirror. Nevertheless, events in the last 18 months will stay with us, most certainly for life. For many, personal loss is a feeling that will reinforce this. Whatever your thoughts about the Government's decision to remove social distancing measures, we must all bear this in mind – it is really not over yet. We are still in the Covid-19 pandemic. The UK vaccination programme has been a remarkable success. The Kellaway Pharmacy-Bristol Travel Clinic NHS Covid vaccination programme has been built on remarkable community spirit. Administering over 25k vaccine

doses to help play a significant part in the effort to protect our community. A sobering thought is that jabs alone will not be enough to stop the virus from spreading. The protection offered by the initial vaccination will require booster doses for the more vulnerable. No vaccine is ever 100%, even before we start discussing vaccine variants. We are already seeing double-vaccinated people catching the virus and passing it on. This is the reason for the free lateral flow testing roll-out, so people carrying the virus with no symptoms can be made aware. But please do remember if you have symptoms: cough, fever, loss of taste or smell, sneezing,

sore throat, diarrhoea, you will need an NHS Covid-19 PCR test. So as we look to enjoy our summer, our actions mustn't cut short the freedom we now have or, even worse, put people in danger. Mask wearing, hand hygiene and social distancing are to be employed as needed. Common hay fever symptoms can now be incredibly confusing. Please seek advice from your community pharmacy team. Remember, if out in the Sun, use sunscreen. Personal responsibility must protect collective freedom and every life. This is how our community is getting through this – don't let us down.
