More than £1.7m charity's appeal to PUBLIC donations to support NHS staff, patients, and Southmead Hospital in the fight against coronavirus have raised more than £1.7 million so far. It’s a huge amount of money, but Southmead Hospital Charity now needs the public to continue to support them to fund Coronavirus (Covid-19) research projects that are looking for new treatments for the virus. The charity is hoping to raise an additional £815,000 to support three Coronavirus research projects which researchers hope will lead to new breakthroughs in fighting the virus. Southmead Hospital Charity launched their Coronavirus (Covid-19) Appeal in March to support staff and patients at North Bristol NHS Trust. Of the total raised so far, £1.25m will be invested into caring for critically ill patients at Southmead Hospital, which operates one of the largest Intensive Care Units (ICU) in the country. The major investment will see a new clinical information system introduced that will revolutionise the ways patients are monitored and treated. It will also fund state of the art respiratory equipment including a specialist ventilator, portable ultrasound machines and other innovative technologies. Currently, the Coronavirus Appeal is funding access to specialist counselling and wellbeing support for staff during this uncertain time. Money raised is also supporting Southmead Hospital Charity’s bereavement fund to support families of North Bristol NHS Trust staff who sadly lose their lives to coronavirus. Donations have provided welfare packages for staff across the hospital as well as upgrading staff rest areas to enable people to take breaks in a safe and restful environment. In maternity, the charity is providing free scan photos to mums who cannot be

And the charity has also funded tablet devices for patients who are in hospital and isolated from their loved ones to enable them to stay in touch. Local and national businesses have been working with the charity to support NHS staff in a number of ways through the donation of goods or services. Dr Julian Thompson, consultant in intensive care at Southmead Hospital said: “In recent months, Covid-19 has presented an unprecedented challenge to Intensive Care Units around the world. “Here at Southmead Hospital’s ICU we have received inspirational support from the communities that we serve. “The Southmead Hospital Charity’s Coronavirus Appeal donations will allow us to meet the ongoing challenge of

Sarah Harrison said: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our communities in the past few months – and we are so grateful for the ongoing support which continues to be

critical to our continued work in supporting the hospital into the future. “We know that there is more to do to ensure the incredible staff at North Bristol NHS Trust and their patients are supported during this uncertain time. “And our commitment to fund research into new understandings and treatments for coronavirus (Covid-19) is our priority which is why we need to continue our call for donations to support these ground-breaking projects. “We need your help to ensure our researchers can continue making progress in fighting the virus right here in Bristol – helping us to shape a new future for healthcare.” Find out more about the Coronavirus (Covid-19) research at www. southmeadhospitalcharity.org. uk

Neighbours put on surprise 100th birthday JOYCE Harper, MBE, of Henleaze Dance School was feeling a little anxious that her 100th birthday was going to be as she put it, ‘a bit of a disaster,’ as she was locked down in her flat in Downs Cote Park, Westburyon-Trym. She was unable to see her nephew Roger Harper, who lives in Portishead, and thought she might just be having a quiet day. But the residents of Downs

Cote Park, a C shaped road, had other ideas. They have been marking every birthday since lockdown with a distanced sing and a hand bells rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ and Joyce’s day was going to be like that… but so much more. A group of her neighbours have been supporting her for a few years with shopping, trips out and various get-togethers and couldn’t bear the thought of her celebrating in an understated way. So, they set out to create a day to remember. Whipped up in advance, Joyce’s choice of chocolate cake with three layers, decorated with ballet dancers, Joyce’s name and ‘100’, looked divine. Neighbours learned a special song about Joyce’s life, set to the tune of Minnie the Moocher. Joyce requested that the song be sung twice as she loved the lyrics. Requests were sent far and wide to send in messages and old photos from students and

neighbours to compile a 100 page memory book. Watching Joyce turning the pages was heartwarming as she gave a little gasp as she saw the memories. Many people in the street got together to give Joyce a gift of a large ballet print. It is in pride of

place opposite her chair in her flat. The neighbours all pitched in to decorate the area outside her flat with 100 balloons , garlands, bunting and chalked greetings on the road. One of the neighbours had cemented her chair into the

paving slabs outside her flat at the beginning of lockdown so she could join in birthdays, Clapping for the NHS and VE Day. This chair would be the centre of her celebrations. The organisers got a slot on BBC Radio Bristol in the morning

and BBC Points West captured the atmosphere in the afternoon. With carefully placed 2m crosses all those gathered managed to sing, ring, whoop and cheer for Joyce’s birthday. The celebrations continued as Rosemary Carrington, who took

over Henleaze Dance School two years ago, arrived with a 12 car cavalcade full of her pupils (and parents driving) to come down the road twice with cars hooting their horns and waving flags out of the window. The climax was a beautiful dance display in the road by her pupils with Rosemary leading the dancing. There were many tears during this performance. Joyce was overcome and, interviewed for Points West, said: “It is the best birthday yet.” Talking to the Voice after the event when things had calmed down a bit Joyce commented: “It was all wonderful, really wonderful. There were so many people there and the neighbours had done so much to make it a special day. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The cake was lovely, the song was very funny and the cavalcade was a total surprise.” Joyce was born on May 5, 1920, in Clifton and spent all her early years there apart from a

spell in Minehead in the war. She left school at 16 to work at the Civil Service where she joined the Telephone Managers office. At 26 she decided to pursue dance teaching as a profession and she opened Henleaze School of Dance in 1946. Dancing lessons have been taking place in St Peter’s Hall since that time. The school expanded to Long Ashton and Stoke Bishop but Henleaze has remained the base. Joyce ran eight classes a week covering 2 ½ to 16 year olds until she was 98 then Rosemary Carrington took over. In 2011 Joyce was awarded an MBE for her services to dance. She is also a prolific charity fundraiser. Joyce never married but considered her pupils her children and the warmth the pupils showed her reflects how fond of Joyce they are. Having 133 cards for her birthday is a testament to her popularity and how much she is treasured.

n NEWS COTHAM School has announced that it will be using an automated opening and locking of gates system at Stoke Lodge playing fields from the end of June, in preparation for sport use from July 6. The decision to provide access once more was welcomed by many residents, upset at finding they were unable to use the green space for walking and exercise during the lockdown because the access gates were locked. Cotham School closed the gates on March 24 in response to advice around the coronavirus outbreak, stating it has a responsibility to maintain site security at the school site at Stoke Lodge in order to meet the requirements of insurance and the landlord. Resident Helen Powell said: “We're delighted that Cotham School says that it intends to honour its promise that the community would have access to the fields when not in use by the school. “We do have some concerns about the new remote locking proposal, which is more,

Stoke Lodge playing fields to reopen with remote-lock gates

Shut out during lockdown, the local community made their views known rather than less, restrictive of community use (compared with the arrangements that were in place before the three month lock-out). "We're also concerned about

the practicalities - for example, people being trapped when the school locks the gates remotely at short notice. “We've raised these concerns with the school and also

suggested that local keyholders could open the Cheyne Road and arboretum gates, as it doesn't seem that there is any plan at the moment for unlocking these wellused entry points. “Hopefully this will settle into a more workable and reliable arrangement so that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy this important open space throughout the summer months and beyond, pending the outcome of the two Town and Village Green applications.” There will be three access points with remotely controlled single gates which will be set to open when the site is not in use by school (including grounds maintenance) or any authorised or organised sports users. The entrances for use will be the single gates at Parry’s Lane, West Dene and alongside the playground off Shirehampton Road.

Call for new children's playground on the Downs PARENTS living near Clifton and Durdham Downs are calling for the Downs Committee to yield some land for a children’s playground. Green Party councillor Carla Denyer, representing the parents, made a request to the Downs Committee. They said that they would consider it, but first need to see that there is sufficient demand. Cllr Denyer says: “A few weeks ago I set up a petition for a new children’s play area on the Downs, after local parents got in touch with me about the lack of any children’s play equipment in my ward (Clifton Down). I am really pleased that the petition has already got over 400 signatures and is still growing. I hope this will help show the Downs committee that there is significant local demand. “Outdoor play is so valuable for children’s development and wellbeing, and it’s important to have it near where children live so they can reach it safely and easily.” There is already an excellent playground at the other end of the Downs, near the Suspension Bridge. However, at over 1.5 miles from the top of Whiteladies Road, it is too far for most young children to walk to from the centre of the Downs. The petition says that the playground should be “preferably near the Water Tower and Cafe on Stoke Road” but leaves the specifics to be worked out by the Downs Committee. The petition has already

Funtime for all: a sustainable playground, similar to the one near the Suspension bridge is proposed collected over 400 signatures in its first two weeks, but campaigners hope to collect more to make a strong case. Local parent, Rupert StuartBaker, said: “The Downs is a fantastic asset to the City of Bristol. It is a beautiful open space for everyone to enjoy. “The success of the sustainable playground by the Clifton Suspension Bridge is great for families living in Clifton village and Leigh Woods and for the many visitors to the area. However, for the many families

who live on the other side of the Downs towards Whiteladies Road, Stoke Hill and Redland Road, it’s a 20-minute walk for an adult let alone a toddler to the current playground. “A sustainable playground located by the water tower and café over a mile to the North would give access to great facilities for families in Redland, Clifton, Westbury Park, Henleaze, Bishopston and Stoke Bishop and Sneyd Park. It’s a great idea and one we fully support.”

To add your name to the petition see: www. actionnetwork.org/petitions/ downsplayground (• This petition was started during the coronavirus lockdown, at a time when most play equipment is cordoned off to protect our public health. The petitioners understand and support these measures, and only want to see a new playground in use when it is safe to do so.)

Dementia charity celebrates seven-year anniversary BRISTOL Dementia Action Alliance (BDAA) was launched seven years ago on July 9, 2013, following a public meeting held at Westbury Baptist Church. The vital question asked at that meeting was “Is Bristol a Dementia Friendly City”? Since the launch, Bristol and the area beyond has provided tremendous support to the charity and its Happy Days Memory Café which has been running for almost five years. From the outset BDAA has worked towards ensuring that anyone who lives here, works here or visits here, be they young or old, can be treated with common courtesy and respect. It has worked with large local companies such as Wessex Water, Great Western Railway, and Bristol Airport to help them become dementia friendly businesses. Its work is having an impact on how people with Dementia are treated: BDAA was

Ukelele Jam perform at the Happy Days Memory Café the winner of Voscur’s Bristol’s Social Impact Resilience Award 2019-20 and runner up in The Alzheimer’s Society ‘Dementia Friendly Community of the Year (City or County)’ 2018. During lockdown, Happy Days Memory Café has run a teleconferencing session on Friday afternoons and a

pom-pom dancing session over Facebook. Founder, Tony Hall, said: “When we started out on this venture, I never realised how much support and encouragement we would receive from people wanting to know more about dementia. “I would just like to thank

all our team, volunteers and supporters for everything they’ve done - and are still doing - to make Bristol THE Dementia Friendly City of the UK. “Our BDAA birthday celebrations will be postponed until our AGM in September (lockdown easing permitting), but the team and anyone who would like to join us, are having a virtual celebration at 2pm on Friday 10 July over Zoom when we have invited Michael Loader to run a short story-telling session. “I hope to 'see' you on the 10th and thanks again for all your support and encouragement.” Anyone can attend the event and celebrate with BDAA. Road to nowhere: Weca earmarks junction that doesn't exist for upgrade A ROAD junction that doesn’t exist was earmarked for an upgrade by the West of England Combined Authority (Weca), sparking alarm from councillors. Scrutiny committee members said basic errors in the region’s walking and cycling blueprint for the next two decades had left them “annoyed” and doubting what they could trust in the 512 pages of reports that went to Weca committee last week. The combined authority – which comprises Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset councils – says it will tighten its procedures and involve ward members with local knowledge more before reports are published. Weca’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) included improvements at Henbury Road/Northumbria

junction in the report that doesn’t exist because the two roads are a mile apart. “When I see a detailed report that doesn’t even get the name of the road right I find myself looking at the rest of the report thinking ‘what can I trust?’ “If I’ve found one page that I know something about that we’re meant to have scrutinised, that casts doubt in my mind of all the other pages. “I don’t expect Weca officers to have detailed knowledge of the roads that make up each ward. “It is clearly a Bristol problem because Bristol City Council prepared the report, but it reflects badly on Weca.” He said the same page of the document also included plans to widen a pavement but that this was impossible because the road was too narrow. “We need to make clear to the mayor and Weca officers that we expect them to demand quality assurance from the underlying unitary authorities, not any old desktop report knocked together and submitted without it being checked,’ Cllr Gollop said. “If out of 500-odd pages there is only one page I know specific details about and it’s flawed, I have no evidence to assure me that the other 499 pages are right.” Labour Councillor Brenda Massey, who represents neighbouring Southmead ward, said: “I found it quite annoying that my own ward was assumed into Westbury and Henleaze. “There were four major roads in the report which are actually in Southmead.”

Bristol Lib Dem group leader Councillor Gary Hopkins told the remote meeting on Zoom: “Quality assurance is absolutely essential. “Hearing a traffic junction doesn’t actually exist is quite ludicrous and I’m sure there are lots of other howlers contained in the papers. “This is a severe deficiency of Weca that we do not have proper sub-committees to look at specific subjects. “Every scrutiny meeting that I’ve been to has been making this point. “We have yelled and shouted about it and nothing has happened.” Bristol Labour Councillor Mhairi Threlfall said Weca boards, including one for transport, had been set up but they needed bolstering. “If we’re going to improve on transparency and accountability it’s really important that we look at those sub-groups and how we operate as a committee and strengthen those so we’re able to effectively scrutinise,” she said. Weca director of legal services Shahzia Daya told the meeting: “We do have a process that includes all of the boards we’ve got with members of all of the authorities. “We have a number of working groups with all of the authority officers involved. “These papers go through mayors and leaders on a regular basis and we will make sure we tighten those processes. “When we have those final drafts, we need to make sure that you (councillors) are involved in some way. “We will absolutely make sure that what is in the papers is 100 per cent correct. “The name of a street is clearly an absolutely important amendment that needs to be made.” The report had been corrected by the time the main Weca committee agreed to adopt the walking and cycling strategy two days later. Crowdfunding for defibrillator A CROWDFUNDING page has been launched to raise funds for a 24-hour public access defibrillator in the North View area. More than £500 has been donated so far from members of the community and local businesses for the life-saving equipment. The fundraising target is £1,825. Immediate action from a bystander and early defibrillation are key to increasing someone’s chance of surviving a cardiac arrest. The closest public access defibrillator to North View is installed outside Henleaze United Reformed Church, opposite the St Peter’s Hospice shop entrance in Waterford Road. www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/northviewbristoldefibrillator

n NEWS THE dramatic toppling of the statue of Edward Colston at a Black Lives Matter protest in Bristol in June made headlines around the world and has led to a call to begin a new era. Now, Bristol’s true history will be researched by a commission including historians so the city can better understand its story. The statue has been retrieved from the harbour and will be exhibited in one of Bristol’s museums in the future, displayed alongside Black Lives Matter placards from the recent protest so the 300 year story of slavery through to today’s fight for racial equality can be learnt about. Marvin Rees, Bristol Mayor, said: “These events have really highlighted that as a city we all have very different understandings of our past. The only way we can work together on our future is by learning the truth of our beginnings, embracing the facts, and sharing those stories with others. This is why this commission is so important.” Cotham Councillor, Cleo Lake, said: “I have always advocated that the statue be put in a museum in an appropriate context. There have been many opportunities to do this that have been ignored. “Whilst the way the statue was taken down could have been different, I fully support how the incident was policed under the watch of Supt. Andy Bennett.” Photographer Colin Moody captured the moment the statue was dumped in the floating harbour and has printed out five giant canvas versions of

Off-licence gets green light despite police concerns A BRISTOL off-licence whose owner is under investigation for assault will be able to continue to sell alcohol from new premises despite objections from police. Wahid Ali runs Kellaway Premier Store at 12 Kellaway Avenue. He is accused of assaulting a member of the

public who entered the store on April 18. But Bristol City Council granted Mr Ali permission to sell alcohol from 16 Kellaway Avenue when he shifts the store to the new and bigger premises next door. Members of a licensing

committee made their decision at a hearing where they heard evidence from Mr Ali’s legal representative, Mr S Gibson. Mr Gibson told councillors his client had run Kellaway Premier Store “without incident” for five years, except for a “one off” incident in April. Mr Ali pushed a customer to get him out of his store because the man had been swearing and making insults about Mr Ali’s deceased parents, the licensing committee heard. “The member of the public had been in the store,” Mr Gibson said. “He was swearing and was very insulting about Mr Ali’s mother and father who were recently deceased. “Mr Ali became upset and pushed the customer, urging him to go away and leave them alone. “That was it. That was the sum total of the alleged assault.” Mr Gibson said Mr Ali showed the officer CCTV footage of the incident at the time but a problem with the cameras, which has since been fixed, meant the footage was automatically deleted before the police requested a copy nine days later. But Avon and Somerset Constabulary licensing officer Louise Mowbray told the hearing police had body camera footage of the incident and Mr Gibson’s version of events was “incorrect”. Ms Mowbray said she could not reveal the details of what happened, because the matter was under investigation, but said Mr Ali’s actions were “not proportionate”. “At the moment, I would

suggest the applicant is not fit or proper to have this licence in this place until this investigation is over,” she said. But Mr Gibson said there was “very little” reason to refuse Mr Ali’s application and it would be inconsistent to do so when the store’s current licence was not under review as a result of the alleged assault. “If something came to light that was incriminating against Mr Ali and maybe further action was taken down the line, of course you have the armoury of a review process on the new licence should that become necessary,” he said. Mr Ali was granted a licence to sell alcohol at another convenience store in Bristol – Rehan Food Stores in Stapleton Road – five days after the incident. Once it moves into 16 Kellaway Avenue, Kellaway Premier Store will be permitted to sell alcohol from 9am to 11pm on Mondays through Saturdays, and from 9am to 10pm on Sundays. The committee refused a request by police to prevent the store from selling products containing more than six per cent alcohol, saying the condition was not “proportionate”. On June 25, a police spokesman confirmed the force are investigating an allegation of assault and enquiries are ongoing, adding: “We have not made an arrest in this investigation at this time.” By Amanda Cameron, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Listening bench combats isolation A NEW bench appeared in June outside St Alban’s Church in Bayswater Avenue, Westbury Park, designed to encourage people who need to talk. Revd. Emma Langley says: "We know that lockdown has made isolation and loneliness worse so if you're feeling lonely or just need a chat why not plonk yourself down on our 'Listening Bench' at St Alban's. There will be someone there to talk to between 4 - 6pm every day of the week - unless the weather is terrible. “There’s no need to make an appointment. Just turn up. We're great listeners - we're not counsellors or experts, just individuals who hope we can meet a need. If you don't need it, why not suggest it to someone else who might." St Alban’s Sunday services can be found on their website (and YouTube channel) https:// westburyparkchurch.org.uk/

n EDUCATION UWE bursary supports BAME students UWE Bristol has launched a new bursary named after the Bristol civil rights activist, Paul Stephenson OBE, to help students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. The five successful recipients of the grant will each receive £1,000 in the first two years of their university studies, to assist students with their living costs; helping to widen participation within higher education and supporting BAME students to further their ambitions. A second bursary The Dean’s Bursary is launched by the Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education. It is aimed at applicants from ‘low participation neighbourhoods’, areas where young people traditionally do not consider Higher Education.

Lockdown haircut raises £1,000 for NHS DURING lockdown, Mya Thomas of Year 7 at Fairfield High School (FHS) decided she wished to do something to help the NHS. Inspired by the trend of "lockdown haircuts", Mya decided to shorten her 22 inch locks by over 21 inches, taking a pair of clippers to her hair. As well as raising over £1,000 in the process for NHS Charities Together (with many Fairfield students, parents, staff, and the principal himself donating) she was also able to send the main body of hair to a charity which makes wigs for children who have lost their hair to cancer. Mya initially set a target of £500, so was blown away by how quickly she reached, surpassed, and then more than doubled this figure due to everyone's kindness. Although nervous on the day of the shave, Mya was also excited, smiling ear to ear, and

shared the experience live via Zoom with close friends and family. The end result was a total transformation - it is easy to forget what a part hair plays in shaping our identity. However, it was and still is a really positive transformation, as the new look really suits her. Were there any regrets? No, although the cold weather front which came over shortly after did reveal how insulating her hair

had been for her neck and ears! Also, it was a few days before Mya stopped the automatic reflex of flicking her "hair" out of her face. Mya and her family would like to thank everyone who helped out in raising such a great amount, and FHS would like to thank Mya for her incredible efforts. BFS students prove strong role models THE Head of Sixth Form at Bristol Free School, Richard Walker, is full of praise for the maturity with which his Year 13 students have handled the lockdown. Mr Walker says: “The Year 13s have been fantastic since the lockdown. Rather than get frustrated and down about the whole situation, they have got together and shared their areas of experience in Sixth Form, their favourite subjects and offered mentoring support, both academically and pastorally to the Year 12 students. “A huge thank you to Hannah and Bea for leading on this. Not only have the students offered support and mentoring for the Year 12s, they are also integral to the planning for our Year 11 Induction afternoon on 8 July and sharing their views and support for National Wellbeing Week. “We are very lucky to have such brilliant students who act as excellent role models, selflessly giving back to their school community. I will, in particular, be very sad when they go onto pastures new in September.”

Dancing girls raise funds for food charity

THREE Year 6 students from Westbury Park School took part in a 10 day long ‘Danceathon’ to raise money for FareShare South West during the lockdown in May. Friends Poppy Payne, Heidi Cosway and Isla Couchman were missing each other while their school was closed. To raise their spirits and some much needed funds for a charity the girls decided to dance virtually for 100 minutes each day for 10 days. An initial target of £200 was quickly smashed by the girls. Donations, so far, total nearly £1,500. Poppy said: "It’s hard enough missing your friends during lockdown but it must be so hard being hungry too. My friends and I love to dance and have wanted to do a Danceathon for ages to

raise money for charity.” Poppy’s mum Lucy helped the girls set up their fundraising page and emailed friends and family to let them know that the event was taking place. “Poppy and her friends have been badgering me for years to do a Danceathon and they were really missing the social interaction with their friends,” said Lucy. “This really lifted their spirits and it was lovely seeing all their smiles together. I think it's great they are doing something local and helping other children.” The girls danced on Zoom, dressing up to different themes each day. Missing their school trip to France, they dressed up in French theme clothes and on another day, danced in their onesies. Taking their

moves into their neighbourhood Poppy, Heidi and Isla danced in St Helena Road, attracting an audience of residents living nearby. More friends joined in fun too, all keeping a suitable distance apart, and Year 6 teacher Miss Mann came along with other staff to cheer on the girls. Poppy added: “We had a hat to put money in. It felt good to dance and I got to see my friends. We are happy that we can dance and raise money to help hungry families." FareShare South West saves perfectly good surplus food destined for waste and redistributes it to local charities and community groups. Head of Development, Phoebe Ruxton said: “Poppy, Isla and Heidi should be incredibly proud

of what they have achieved together. “Dancing for that many hours is a real achievement, not to mention all their hard work promoting the campaign, asking friends and family to sponsor, and even featuring on the radio! “The final donation is enough for us to provide food for an incredible 5,780 meals for people most in need right now. With demand for food support at unprecedented levels and our operation having to double during the Coronavirus crisis, money from fundraising initiatives like this one is vital to ensure fewer people go needlessly hungry in our region.” If you would like to donate to the Danceathon fundraiser see: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/lucy-payne23

RGS acts fast to decolonise curriculum REDLAND Green School has stepped up moves to diversify its curriculum in the wake of the toppling of the Edward Colston statue in Bristol. The response to the historic event during a Black Lives Matter demonstration prompted hundreds of students, ex students and staff to write to RGS calling for action. The letter urged the school to look at all areas of the curriculum and to support students to learn about social justice issues and be actively anti-racist. RGS said it had already taken steps to decolonise its curriculum, such as covering Bristol’s role in the transatlantic slave trade and the impact of colonialism as well as reviewing texts studied in English literature to ensure that not all the authors used are from a white British background. However, assistant headteacher Richard

Got News? Call 0117 9082121

Kennett said the school recognised it needed to do more. He said that in June staff were given training on how to diversify their subject areas and many had come up with ideas for the short term. Looking ahead, he said RGS would involve its well-established equalities group in reviewing all areas of the curriculum as well as linking with Cotham School through the North Bristol Post 16 Centre and with academics at Bristol University. Mr Kennett said: “Decolonising and diversifying the curriculum is something we all take seriously at Redland Green and we were glad to receive this letter as it shows our ex-students, current students and parent body take this so seriously. We are open to change and as ever want to listen to our student body at this important time.” The open letter, signed by about 500

people, was similar to one sent to other schools in Bristol, calling on educational institutions to take an active role in tackling systemic racism. “Teaching students about the realities of British history, while also celebrating the Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour individuals and movements who have acted to overcome these systems of oppression, is indispensable for a comprehensive understanding of social relations in the UK and beyond,” it said. The letter acknowledged that this was a national issue and asked RGS to support moves to ask the Department for Education to amend the National Curriculum. It said a study found 86.2 % of Britons were educated on the Tudors at school, whereas only 9.3% learned about the role of slavery in British Industrialisation.

n FROM OUR MP

Our economic recovery after pandemic must involve a green solution Your Voice in Parliament PARLIAMENT might not be back to normal just yet but, in its new hybrid form, there’s lots of work taking place in the context of some of the most difficult decisions facing the country since the Second World War. As the newly elected Chair of the Business, Environment and Industrial Strategy Select Committee, I now also have an expanded national brief on issues such as support for businesses and workers, thinking through our economic recovery, tackling climate change and preparing for Britain's leadership of COP26 (the international summit on climate change action). Select Committees hold Ministers to account and engage with stakeholders across the country to suggest policy proposals to government. This role also means that I now sit on the Joint Committee on National Security and the Liaison Committee, which scrutinises the work of the Prime Minister. These national issues have local consequences for us in Bristol too. So much has happened locally that I won’t be able to report back on it all in this column, but rest assured that from the very beginning I

have been in weekly calls with the NHS, police, city council, the Local Resilience Forum and directly with government to make sure that local issues have been escalated and sorted as quickly as possible. I am now in frequent discussions with local employers, trade unions and the broader public sector, to understand the risks ahead of us for work and business, and opportunities for the future. It will come as no surprise that through all these conversations, I’m clear that our net zero transition must be included. From local projects to national announcements, I will keep calling for our economic recovery to be a green one. Your Champion in Bristol Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my small team of staff. Understandably, demand for our help has soared during the lockdown and my team and I have been working as hard as possible to help constituents. For non-urgent requests, we’ve been slower at responding than we would normally like, but I hope you understand why this has been the case. My priority locally – beyond

Got News? Call 0117 9082121

helping individual constituents and organisations – is now focused on the safe lifting of the lockdown measures, ensuring that procedures are in place for effective testing and tracing in order to deal with potential local flare ups in the infection rate. We’re going to have to manage this pandemic for many more months ahead and I can’t stress enough how important it is that we call continue to maintain social distance, wash our hands and self-isolate if we get symptoms. As part of this local lifting of the lockdown measures, I recently visited Southmead Hospital to learn about how they’ve adapted and innovated to protect us and save lives during this pandemic. I deeply valued the opportunity to speak with staff in the ICU about their experience of treating COVID patients, with facilities staff about how they have worked to support the whole hospital and with senior management about the steps ahead as we move out of lockdown, address patient backlogs and prepare for winter. Using the momentum that we’ve gained from the Coronavirus Memorial petition that I ran in April, I’m now partnering with the Southmead Hospital Charity to organise a physical memorial to

Darren Jones column remember those we have sadly lost and to pay tribute to the frontline workers who have worked so hard on our behalf during this pandemic. I’m looking forward to announcing further details of this soon. I’m continuing to hold surgeries over the phone and host online events to engage with constituents: my online Café Politics are proving busier than ever! Getting Bristol moving safely Travelling around Bristol is about to get easier. Major transport upgrades are underway to help you move safely as we emerge from lockdown. Bristol City Council is accelerating several projects offering safer and better public transport, cleaner air and improved walking and cycling routes. These improvements will help our travel movements, but we’d still recommend avoiding peak times, prioritising buses for key workers and to walk or cycle where possible.

Pedestrianising the Old City area of Bristol

Pavement widening for local shopping areas

We’re fulfilling a long-standing ambition to make this historic part of the city more pedestrian-friendly by restricting vehicles during core business hours.

We are implementing the following upgrades:

The streets included are home to our independent markets, bars, cafes and restaurants. We want to create more outdoor social space, boosting footfall to the area and supporting small traders. Giving more space to pedestrians and cyclists will also help with social distancing. Around 2,000 views were recorded at the start of the year about the Old City plans, revealing 94% of visitors travel to the area by foot, cycle or bus and 93% agreed there would be benefits from pedestrianisation. We recognise that the scale of the work will require adjustment and behaviour change, with less car journeys and the removal of through-traffic in the city centre. The long-term benefits for travel around Bristol outweighs the inconvenience of this transition, as we continue to look at options to establish a well-connected city. There are other travel improvements being made, please visit: www.bristol.gov.uk/streets-travel or travelwest.info

Introducing a bus priority route over Bristol Bridge and at the entrance to Baldwin Street We are putting into motion plans to restrict through–traffic to private vehicles over Bristol Bridge and Baldwin Street. This scheme includes introducing bus gates on all approaches to Bristol Bridge, and at the entrance to Baldwin Street from the city centre. The bus gates would then provide priority to pedestrians, public transport, taxis and cycles. Once the measures are in place, we will evaluate the benefits and resolve any reported issues. We will also be speaking to communities, businesses and councillors to discuss the most effective measures. Our team will be engaging with the public over the coming weeks and months to ensure the scheme is designed and delivered in a way that recognises access requirements and the concerns of individual traders and households.

• Bedminster Parade (suspension of parking) • Stapleton Road (suspension of parking and widening pavements) • St Marks Road (suspension of parking and widening pavements) • Clifton Village (suspension of parking) • Henleaze (suspension of parking and widening pavements) • Westbury-on-Trym (suspension of parking and widening pavements) • North Street (outside Tesco) (suspension of parking and widening pavements) • Mina Road (suspension of parking and widening pavements) • Cumberland Road (segregated cycle track) • Merchants Road Bridge (priority southbound and removal of traffic lane).

Interactive transport map A new mapping tool has been launched to record comments and ideas about transport and travel in Bristol. It can be used to identify difficult locations to maintain social distancing and ways to create better spaces for cycling and walking. The map can be used to give feedback. News and views from our city councillors Steve Smith (Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze) I often start these colum ns by saying that a lot has happened since I last wrote, but when I last put pen to paper at the I don’t think any of us had start of the year imagined the scale of what was about to fac e us. I hope that you and your loved ones hav e been safe during these extraordinary tim es, and that life is at least beginning to retu rn to something like normal. It’s great tha t the Henleaze and Westbury Voice has re-s tarted. The monthly rhythm of writing these columns feels like another small step out of the chaos. Pavement widening I’m sure you will all have seen the temporary pavement widening tha t the council has done in Henleaze High St and Westbury Village. These schemes are part of a project called StreetSpace which the council is carrying out in response to a central government request to make mo re space available for pedestrians and cyc lists as we emerge from lockdown. The aim is to make it easier

for people to walk around busy areas while maintaining social distanc ing. As well as the pavement s in our area the project includes sim ilar schemes on other shopping streets around Bristol, plus pedestrianisation of the Old City, and a ban on private cars along Bal dwin St. These are all schemes that the counci l had anyway, but they have bee ambitions to do n brought forward because of the emphasis (and funding) from central government. These schemes are all inte nded to be temporary and to last onl y as long as social distancing is required. To that end they have been carried out on the same legal basis as roadworks, so haven’ t had the public consultation that major changes would normally need. We will be keeping a very close eye on any intentio ns to keep them in the long term. Meanwhile, the schemes can be flexible and the project team are happy to respond to feedback by moving and tweaking them. Please do let us know you r views, and in particular any specific par ts of the schemes that work well for you, or cause you problems. A4018 update Regular readers will be aware that the big

A4018 project was thrown out last year, but there are some elements which are supposed to still be going ahead, including crossings on Canford Lane by the cemetery and Passage Rd by Westbury C of E school, and a wider review of opportunities for Westbury Village. We’ve been pushing to get those projects going, but we have now been told that the whole pro ject team has been re-assigned to the StreetS pace project above, and so all A4018 works are temporarily on hold. Watch this space! Stay in Touch The above is only a small selection of what has been going on. I try to provide more regular and detailed upd ates on Facebook, so you can see what I’m up to and contact me at fb.com/CouncillorSt eveSmith. You can also contact me by email on cllr. steve.smith@bristol.g ov.uk, or phone on 07769 285266.

Contact us now for a complimentary financial planning review THE pandemic and its economic consequences have recently gripped the markets causing a dramatic sell down in risk assets like shares over the last few months. The consensus view is: - There is a high risk of a prolonged global economic recession. - Equities are likely to remain extremely volatile in the shortterm as the story around the Coronavirus changes on a daily basis. The stock market panicked from around the end of February, causing shares to experience

some of the largest one day downward moves since 2008, 1987 and yes, even 1929. So, what does this all mean for your financial goals? Whether you are approaching retirement or indeed are already enjoying your retirement, then it is likely that you will be heavily invested in assets like pensions, ISAs and investment bonds – all of which themselves are likely to be invested, in some shape or form, in the stock market. Therefore, you should immediately consider a financial planning review to ensure you

are still on track and make any changes that are required. I encourage you therefore to act now to protect your financial goals and not wait until those ‘normal times’ which may never return as we once knew them. Coronavirus Safe Financial Planning Reviews Please be assured that we have taken all steps to eliminate any risks of contracting the virus during our reviews with clients. We are set up on all of the popular remote/video meeting systems (Zoom, Skype, Facetime, Teams etc) – just let us know which one you prefer. Alternatively, if you would like a traditional face to face meeting, our office is fully ‘Covid Secure’

with all cleaning and social distancing processes in place. We even have a large outdoor courtyard meeting space if you prefer! Just let us know when booking. How to book Call 0117 363 6212 or email richard@haroldstephens.co.uk or contact us through the website www.haroldstephens.co.uk for your complimentary financial planning review. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Life has changed for all of us

B

ACK in March, it was announced the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections were postponed until 2021 and I made the decision to stay in post. Over the last few months, life has changed for all of us as we have navigated our way through the global health emergency, and my main priority has been supporting the police and partners during this uncertain time. As restrictions continue to be slowly and gradually lifted, we all have a personal responsibility to follow the Government’s advice to lessen the impact of the virus and save lives. While we are living with the threat of coronavirus, officers will continue to engage, explain and encourage our communities to adhere to current regulations and will only ever use enforcement if necessary

and proportionate to the circumstances. We have all sacrificed so much over the past few months – some of you more than others – and we cannot let our efforts go to waste. With life returning to some sort of ‘normal’, I wanted to tell you about my priorities for the year ahead and how my team are working hard to keep local people safe. For the next 10 months that I’m in office, my priorities will continue to be: • Protect the most vulnerable from harm; • Strengthen and improve local communities; • Ensure the police service has the right people, right culture, right capabilities; and • Work together effectively with other police forces and key partners to deliver better services to local people.

General Building

Following the public health crisis, there are particular areas under those priorities that will be a key focus over the coming months, including violence reduction units (VRUs), oversight of the efficiency of the criminal justice process, supporting victim services, with a particular focus on domestic abuse, and engaging with all local communities. It’s more important than ever to hear your voices, concerns and how you’ve been impacted by coronavirus, so I can understand what you need from your policing service. Finally, I encourage you to tune into my regular Facebook Live webchats, where I put your questions to Chief Constable Andy Marsh. Over the last few months, our webchats have largely focused on coronavirus and policing but, as restrictions continue to ease, it’s important

Your Local Builder

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens we start to address other community concerns. For more information about Facebook Lives, please visit my website: www.avonandsomerset-pcc.gov. uk. Until next time, remember to have compassion, look out for one another and stay safe. Sue Mountstevens

n NEWS MEDICS attending an incident or humanitarian crisis could be one step closer to manufacturing personal protective equipment (PPE) and other critical healthcare products, thanks to research beginning next month. Led by the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), the research programme will support feasibility studies and bring together experts to determine the technology, supply chain and training required for Redistributed Manufacturing (RDM) of a range of healthcare products and treatments. RDM can deliver life-saving benefits in medical scenarios where there is urgent and unforeseen demand, such as in response to pandemics, natural disasters and emergencies. For instance, in the case of a pandemic, RDM could help containment of outbreaks through speed of response and localised manufacturing of protective gear, pharmaceuticals and even vaccines close to the outbreak. Wendy Phillips, a Professor

33

UWE researchers investigate on-demand healthcare products of Innovation at UWE Bristol is leading the project. She said: “COVID-19 has highlighted the lack of resilience of large-scale global production and supply networks, emphasising the need for more coordinated, distributed, and responsive supply of goods, and the relocation of production of critical equipment such as regulation-compliant PPE closer to the point-of-need. “The recent pandemic has provided even greater impetus for research into RDM, particularly with respect to its impact on complex supply chains, such as those that exist in healthcare.” The two-year project begins in July and has received £2m funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Professor Phillips said: “When humanitarian, environmental or terrorist crises occur, the first hours are critical for saving lives or improving patient outcome this new model of manufacturing could enable rapid diagnosis, production and testing in remote and changeable conditions. “This project will enable us to identify which technologies have the most potential and which can be used in the field first. We will also look at how new processes will best fit together, as well as looking at the regulatory

environment and what policy changes might be needed.” RiHN is the first dedicated study of RDM in healthcare and the findings from its previous research have been of particular value to policy-makers and funders looking to specify action and to direct attention where it is needed. This work could help pave the way for a future in which innovative manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing and advanced robotics are part of our everyday lives. For instance, we may be able to make medical products in our home, or print-on-demand personalised medicines at the supermarket while we shop. Bespoke devices such as prosthetics and orthotics could even be ordered online and delivered to our door the next day.

n NEWS

THE craft-making skills at the Westbury Park Women’s Institute (WP WI) have been put to good use in recent months, helping frontline workers with much-needed kit. Since April, the WP WI have focussed their efforts on crafting home-made items for front-line workers including paramedics, nurses at Bristol Prison, care home workers and dental staff, as a result of an initial call-out from Brislington WI to begin this work. The WP WI group have made drawstring bags for putting a uniform in before washing to prevent doublehandling, washbags, face-masks and face-mask extenders which help with a more secure fit and take pressure off the ears which can get sore after extended mask wearing. WP WI celebrated their 8th anniversary in March. Member, Jenny Smith, said: “Making the bags has given me a sense of purpose, and feels like a constructive way to help these amazing frontline workers.” Another member of the group, Yve Cowell, has focussed on the logistics, initially calling local nursing homes with offers of bags which were so well received that she then contacted health centres, doctors’ surgeries and dentists. Yve has received lots of warm wishes from the recipients, she said they have told her that they “feel the love and kindness from the sewing team”, and she has said that it’s been “very fulfilling to be part of the team”. To date the WP WI along with lots of local contributors in the community have made 2,383 items, which have been sent to around 40 organisations, and these numbers continue to grow!

35

Keeping calm and carrying on during the lockdown Can you help? If you can donate old pillowcases or bed sheets (washable at 60), or cotton tape/cord used for drawstring, or would like to help out by making some of these items, please email westburyparkwi@gmail.com. The group is keen to know of any organisations with front-line workers who are in need of these items. Want to find out more about the Westbury Park WI? Jenny Smith says: “We are a friendly group always keen to have new members join us. In more normal times you can attend our monthly meetings at the Redland Green Church Halls as a non-member for £4. New members can join anytime at a reduced rate and from April '21, pay £44 for the whole year. In the meantime we are running events virtually using Zoom." June’s event featured guest speaker Emma Britton, BBC Radio Bristol breakfast presenter, who gave a fascinating talk about her career. In a change to the programme the next event on July 1st will be on Policing in the Community. If you would like to join that meeting as a guest, contact westburyparkwi@gmail. com. Joining the WI has other benefits including a regular magazine, regional events and access to cookery, craft and lifestyle courses, and campaigns on topical issues

n NEWS QUARTET Community Foundation (Quartet) has revealed that Sue Mountstevens, Avon & Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, took over as Chair of their Board of Trustees at the end of March. Quartet, which gives over £3.5 million each year to causes across Bristol and the West of England, was established in 1987. Sue Mountstevens said: “This is a very difficult time for our small local charitable organisations. The need for their activities has never been greater but their ability to fund their work is being deeply damaged by the coronavirus crisis. “Quartet Community Foundation has a vital role to play in raising new funding and getting it quickly to them so I am proud to have taken over as Chair of Quartet’s Board at this critical time.” Sue Turner, Chief Executive of Quartet Community Foundation, said: “Sue Mountstevens has superb knowledge of the issues facing our communities so we are delighted that she has become

New head for Quartet Community Foundation

our new Chair of Trustees, taking over from Helen Wilde who has done so much to encourage more local philanthropy.” Quartet Community Foundation is an independent charity, working across the West of England (Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire) to

support local organisations and philanthropists in their charitable giving. Their grantmaking supports the network of charitable organisations providing services and projects across the region and is aimed at those facing disadvantage in our local communities, to give as many people as possible the chance to fulfil their potential. Over £400,000 has gone to local causes tackling the coronavirus crisis in just one month, thanks to a grant programme for Bristol, B&NES, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. From a standing start, Quartet Community Foundation’s Coronavirus Response Fund has helped 83 small, local causes to the tune of more than £413,000 in grants

since the first grant was made on 23 March. Thanks to hundreds of generous gifts and donations, the grants are already helping families on low incomes, homeless people, refugees, isolated older people and many more get through the coronavirus crisis. Quartet Community Foundation’s fundraising appeal has received support from hundreds of local people as well as charitable trusts and philanthropists. So far over £800,000 has been raised for the Coronavirus 2020 Response Fund, including £275,000 from the National Emergencies Trust. Details of all Quartet’s Trustees can be found at https:// quartetcf.org.uk/about-us/whoare-we/

Join in with Goldies online singalongs THOUSANDS of older isolated people looked forward to their regular daytime SINGALONG sessions from the Goldies (Golden-Oldies) Charity. The FUN memory-evoking sessions using the popular songs of the 60s onwards took place at 220 church halls, community rooms and libraries across England and Wales. Forced by Coronavirus to cancel all sessions in March, the Goldies Charity then introduced a short Thursday afternoon weekly session on YouTube led by session leaders, Rachel Parry and Cheryl Davies from their front rooms. Such was the success of these Online sessions with people joining in their homes, that the charity is now going to introduce TWO thirtyminute sessions each week from the end of June and the first week in July. These will go out on YouTube every Tuesday and Thursday on www.goldieslive.com at 11.00am. The sessions are supported by the Cardiff-based Moondance Foundation, The People’s Postcode Lottery, the Garfield Weston Foundation, Sovereign Housing Association, Swindon Borough Council, the Charles Hayward Foundation and the Medlock Charitable Trust. They will continue to be led by Rachel and Cheryl but also with input ‘appearances’ from the Goldies session leaders across England and Wales. There will also be specific sessions with Welsh songs, as well as sessions particularly for those living with Dementia and sessions featuring Bollywood music and dance. Grenville Jones is the founder of the Golden-Oldies Charity which he started back in 2007 with just four daytime sessions in and around Bath and Bristol. He said: “Goldies reaches out to older isolated people who, prior to Lockdown, could get out and attend luncheon clubs, worship, the company of their friends and families and Goldies! This has dramatically changed as people are housebound and so the need for our work is even greater.” The sessions prior to Lockdown, feature the popular memoryevoking songs of the 60s onwards, many chosen by the attendees. Goldieslive online sessions will feature all the favourites with song words on the screen and ‘viewers’ encouraged to contact the charity with their birthday and anniversary choices. All UK Age-Support organisations will be able to stream the weekly sessions in their community rooms and Libraries. “We have become known as the Sing and Smile charity and we hope that through goldieslive.com we can bring joy and fun into thousands of front rooms across the UK,” said Grenville.

n NEWS FLAMINGO Chicks, a Bristol based inclusive dance charity, has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. The organisation gives disabled children and those with illnesses such as cancer, the opportunity to enjoy dance and explore movement alongside their friends. It also provides a vital peer support network for parents and carers, intergenerational volunteering, global outreach and advocacy. Katie Sparkes started the charity in 2013 as her daughter Poppy, who has cerebral palsy, wanted to dance. She amassed a volunteer network who supported her dream to create an inclusive community tackling social isolation amongst disabled children and their families. Now, more than 350 volunteers, aged 18-80 come together to enable all children to enjoy dance classes with friends, while providing a vital peer support network for parents and carers. Katie Sparkes, founder and CEO of Flamingo Chicks, says: “Whether assisting our young people to dance in class or providing IT support and fundraising, volunteers are the heartbeat of the Flamingo flock. It’s thanks to them our charity has been able grow, flourish and create real social change. We now see 3,000 Flamingo Chicks through our doors every year and we’ve campaigned and performed at some incredible locations from Downing Street to the United Nations in New York. Collectively, our volunteers break down barriers to inclusion and showcase the importance of disabled and non-disabled people interacting together.

Flamingo Chicks win royal award

“The intergenerational approach Flamingo Chicks takes to volunteering ensures we have a wonderful pool of people all interacting with others at different life stages – a great way to learn from each other. We are absolutely thrilled for our volunteers to win this award and it’s a real testament to their hard work, dedication and care for our families.” Flamingo Chicks started in Bristol but now also has regular classes in South Wales, Yorkshire and London. It also operates an outreach programme delivering workshops in hospitals and hospices plus a global outreach programme. From the start, volunteering at Flamingo Chicks was an integral part of the organisation. Working with disabled children and their parents and carers is a demanding role that requires

motivation and kindness, but also sound and appropriate knowledge. Therefore, Flamingo Chicks prides itself on a highquality training programme, including free development opportunities such as learning to Makaton sign. The charity actively recruits first-time volunteers as a positive first experience can often turn into a lifetime of volunteering. There’s support to help socially isolated volunteers take part too, as well as those with disabilities themselves. This not only empowers those individuals but also offers great role models to younger children. Innovating quickly to continue supporting families during the Covid-19 lockdown, the group developed a series

of unique virtual classes fusing active learning with dance. Whilst there is an overwhelming amount of online content out there, there is very little that’s accessible to disabled children. Fully adapted and Makaton signed, the Flamingo Chicks classes, which include spin-off science experiments and art activities, are being viewed all over the world and this week, clocked up 100,000 views. Flamingo Chicks will receive the award from Peaches Golding OBE, Lord Lieutenant for the City and County of Bristol later this summer. Furthermore, two volunteers from the charity will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May 2021, along with other recipients of this year’s award.

Had the virus? Find out with antibody test ARE you still wondering if you have already contracted the coronavirus? Many people including, so-called asymptomatic cases, could have. We can now help provide an answer. Kellaway Pharmacy, a Bristol travel and vaccination services clinic, now offers an accurate affordable antibody test. With the easing of lockdown, many individuals, families and businesses are literally undertaking their own coronavirus risk assessments as they plan and make decisions on how to best protect themselves, loved ones and employees. The antibody test will tell you whether you’ve previously had the virus that causes Covid-19 and if your body has produced an immune response. Antibody tests differ from virus swab (PCR) tests, which test to see if you currently have the virus. Our antibody test is a simple ’finger-prick’ type, similar to a diabetes test, and is only available through registered healthcare professionals. The results are available in 10 minutes and we interpret and discuss the implications with you. The evidence is still emerging to determine if those who have had the virus develop long-lasting immunity that protects them from getting the virus again. The results of an antibody test do not mean making changes to personal behaviour, such as easing social distancing measures that protect us all. In fact, it

could help reinforce why it is all so crucial as we realise just how many of us still remain vulnerable. How accurate is the test? The test is licensed by the regulator MHRA and is CE marked. The clinical study provides strong evidence of the usability and effectiveness of the test. • For the specific SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies - Relative Sensitivity: >99.9%, Relative Specificity: 98.0%, Accuracy: 98.6% • For the specific SARS-CoV-2 IgM antibodies - Relative Sensitivity: 85%, Relative Specificity: 96.0%, Accuracy: 92.9% The science behind this particular Covid-19 Antibody test we are using, produced by the Belfastbased Biotechnology Biopanda Reagents, was also featured and explained in the Channel 4 Fact-Check programme www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/ factcheck-qa-the-new-coronavirus-blood-tests To book a test or find out more about our introductory price offer please call our freephone number 0800 7723575 or email: info@ bristoltravelclinic.co.uk We are also able to support businesses by offering on-site testing support, so please get in touch today. Appointments are available at Kellaway Pharmacy in Westbury Park. Do call ahead to book. Stay safe and well, and thanks for all your sacrifices.

n LIBRARIES

Join the Silly Squad! YOUNG readers across Bristol are being encouraged to take part in this year’s digital Summer Reading Challenge. This year's theme offers families a chance to have fun and just "GET SILLY!” with children being invited to read anything that makes them happy - whether it be a comic, joke book, poetry, fiction or non-fiction. The all-new digital Summer Reading Challenge aims to keep children reading over the summer and support parents and carers. The website is free to access, featuring games, quizzes and downloadable activities to encourage children and their families to take part in the challenge at home. Although library buildings

are currently closed, Bristol Libraries will continue to deliver the challenge through e-lending platforms and social media. Fire Boy by J. M. Joseph and The Worst Class in the World by Joanna Nadin are great choices for older readers (8-11 years), and the authors joined the team for a special live online event in June. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4-11 to read during the summer holiday, with research showing that children's reading can 'dip' severely during the summer if they do not have regular access to books. Deputy Mayor, Councillor Asher Craig, Cabinet Member with responsibility for libraries, said: “Although our library buildings are

not currently open, we want to do everything we can to encourage children to carry on reading while they are at home with their families. “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to get children engaging with books, and this year the focus is on encouraging children to read things that make them smile. “Working with the Reading Agency, we want to inspire children to become more confident readers and provide free education and

entertainment during the summer holidays.” Children can find competitions, challenges, author interviews, news, and the book sorter - which recommends what children might like to read next, on the Summer Reading Challenge website throughout the year. To find out more about Bristol Libraries current digital offer, visit www.bristol.gov.uk/librariesarchives/coronavirus-libraryinformation

n INSIDE OUT HOUSE plants are still one of the most popular items in the interior decorating toolkit, one trend I for one am pleased to see lasting. We need to nurture plants and embrace biophilic design now more than ever, and forever too. Product design needs to be environmentally friendly as standard now, not just a selling point or a passing fad, so imagine my delight to find a new ethically minded designer-maker brand on the home decor scene. Bristol, creative and conscious as ever, is home to Out Of This Wood, a spanking new business specialising in contemporary planters made from reclaimed, repurposed pallets in a variety of different woods. The brainchild of Denis Veloso, a salsa dance teacher who has been unable to run his usual classes due to the coronavirus lockdown, these geometric designs developed from such unusual circumstances, I

had to ask him how it all came about. “I like the idea of recycling and remodelling with wood that may otherwise be put into landfill as rubbish. My dad is a cabinet maker in Brazil and he taught me how to make things from wood from when I was a young boy. “I’ve always enjoyed making things but never had the time or the space to do this. Being at home during lockdown has given me the time to experiment with ideas.” As such a new business Out Of This Wood doesn’t yet have a website but to enquire or place an order contact Denis Veloso directly on facebook, but be prepared for a bit of a wait! The reaction to this product launch has been fantastic. Zoe Hewett is founder of Stylemongers Of Bristol interior design studio. www.stylemongersofbristol.co.uk

Supporting families through the most desperate times HOME-Start Bristol (HSB) supports parents who have at least one child aged under 5 and who are struggling with family life. Helping local families for over 30 years, the organisation has quickly adapted its services to deliver support at a distance, using phones and social media to remain in touch with families. Bristol area manager Andrea Priest says: “Never has this support been more essential to families in need than during the crisis triggered by Covid19; never have funds been more sorely needed to support the continuation of this vital work.” HSB recruits and trains parent volunteers to befriend

disadvantaged families, offering them up to three hours a week of practical and emotional support through home visits (in normal times) and are looking for more volunteers to join their team. They are considering delivering the next course – due in September – online so that it can be accessed remotely by participants from all areas of Bristol and South Gloucestershire. If you would like to find out more about Home-Start Bristol, becoming an HSB volunteer or to make a donation please visit the HSB website: www. homestartbristol.org.uk or call Andrea Priest: 07923 036059.
