Victory as Tories take third seat THE Conservative Party have a clean sweep of the council seats in Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze ward. A by-election on May 24, held after long-serving Liberal Democrat councillor Clare Campion-Smith stood down for health reasons, saw the Tory candidate Steve Smith from Westbury-on-Trym win by 196 votes over his closest rival, Lib Dem Graham Donald. Labour's Teresa Stratford was in third place in the poll and the Greens' Ian Moss fourth. Delighted at his victory, Mr Smith thanked the voters of Westbury and Henleaze for their faith in him: “Residents told me this has been liveliest election they have seen in recent years. I’m please to have worked on it with my colleagues Graham, Teresa and Ian. “I fought it on the future of public services and don’t want see them reduced.” Report: Pages 2 & 3

Clean sweep for Conservatives as Steve sees off Lib-Dem challenge IT was victory for the Conservative Party on May 24 when Steve Smith won the Westburyon-Trym and Henleaze by-election with 2,900 votes. The by-election was called after Clare Campion-Smith who held the seat for the Liberal Democrats for 12 years stood down in April for health reasons. A strong campaign by the Lib Dems involving much door knocking and a visit to the city by party leader, Sir Vince Cable. It resulted in an increased share of the vote to their candidate Graham Donald - polling 2,704 votes - just not quite enough to hold on to the seat. The first by-election that Bristol has held since 2010 the count went on past midnight, enlivened by two sudden blackouts as the lights went down and a small recount. Then the final result was announced by Shahzia Daya, Returning Officer for Bristol City Council. Mr Smith joins Bristol City Council along with Geoff Gollop and Liz Radford in a Conservative triumvirate for the ward. Mr Smith said: “The last few hours have been a bit nerve wracking. I wasn’t sure if I was going to win it by looking at the piles of paper going on the tables. All credit to Graham and his team - they fought a great campaign. It was much closer than you might have expected if you looked at the results the last time round. It’s been a really good campaign on all sides and I’m delighted to

The votes are counted have come out as the councillor.” Steve Smith has become increasingly involved in local politics over the last ten years, campaigning for Charlotte Leslie, former MP for Bristol North West, and local councillors and stood unsuccessfully in the 2016 council election for Clifton Down. When the chance arose to stand in his local area, it was an opportunity too good to turn down. “Feedback on the campaign trail has been really positive and welcoming. What’s surprised me has been that people who weren’t going to vote for me have been happy

to talk about the issues. In the whole six weeks of the campaign I’ve just had one door shut in my face, and I’ve knocked on a lot,” said Mr Smith. “One of the biggest campaign issues has been about the funding for the libraries and the parks, the closure of the toilets in Westbury village and the state of roads and pavements.” Graham Donald said: “It’s disappointing news. I was a serious candidate in this election and I believed that I had a reasonable chance of winning it. “I think we’ve made progress in the election because if you look at the results in the 2016 election we were about 16 percent behind and clearly we are nothing like that now. We have plenty to build on and I don’t intend to stop campaigning for people in this area. We need our local councillors to know that there is some challenge in this area and our Mayor, even more so.” Labour Party candidate Teresa Stratford was keen to improve the gender balance at the council but didn’t expect to win. She found it great fun campaigning with her team and said: “A lot of local issues like welfare and how elderly people are going to manage once they retire came up, as well as the problems resulting from the closure of the toilets in Westbury village.” Mr Moss did not attend the count as he was at his daughter’s wedding in Croatia.

n NEWS By Keri Beckingham IN preparation for its centenary

in 2019, a local swimming club is collecting people’s memories of Henleaze Lake. Henleaze Swimming Club was established in 1919. The lake was originally a quarry which was flooded in 1903. People began swimming and ice-skating there possibly as early as 1906. The nine-acre site is owned and managed by the swimming club, who have approximately 2,200 swimming members, and its principal activity is openwater swimming. The club also manages a stock of general coarse fish at the lake, and facilities are provided so that anglers may also enjoy recreational fishing. In celebration of its 100th birthday, the club would love to hear from past members and others who have memories of the lake to add to their archives, especially those who have items associated with club such as old photographs of the lake or artifacts. The club has an extensive collection of photographs but very few of the lake during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and would be keen to see any pictures from this period. The centenary will also be marked with the publication of a new book and an exhibition documenting the club’s history in 2019. As part of the memories project, a Lake Memories event is to be held at the lake on Wednesday June 13 from 1pm – 4pm, where guests with past associations to the club will enjoy tea and cakes on the lawns,

Four men jailed following Co-Op robbery FOUR men have been jailed for more than 15 years following an armed robbery at the Co-Op store on Henleaze Road. On October 17 last year, four masked men armed with weapons entered the store wearing masks and stole a quantity of cash and cigarettes. Following an extensive investigation by Avon and Somerset Police, four men – Callum Morris, 23 of Butterfield Close; Kieron Morris, 25 of Keswick Walk; Mitchell Bowering, 21 of Eastleigh Road; and George James, 26 of Marlwood Drive were each charged with robbery. After pleading guilty, they were sentenced to four years, three years and four months, four years, and four years and six months respectively at Bristol Crown Court on Friday May 4. Speaking of the sentencing, DC Tim Mullins said: “This conviction was only made possible due to the courage and willingness of staff at the store and members of the community to assist police from the outset and throughout the investigation. “I hope this case also serves as a warning that actions such as those committed by these four men will not be tolerated and there will be serious consequences for those involved in such criminality.” Clockwise from top left: Callum Morris, Kieron Morris, George James, Mitchell Bowering

n NEWS by Keri Beckingham AN action group that helps people with dementia has been raising awareness of the condition during Dementia Action Week. Tony Hall’s wife Barbara has had Frontal Temporal Dementia since 1999, and the lack of help and support available when someone is losing their memory prompted him to start the Bristol Dementia Action Alliance (BDAA) in 2013. The project is non-profit-making and community-based, and resourced by volunteers. It is part of a UK network of similar groups. In support of Dementia Action Week, the group launched their “Being a Dementia Friendly Church” event at Westbury Baptist Church on May 18. The event was well supported with a range of interesting speakers, including Rev Dr Margaret Goodal , former dementia lead chaplaincy adviser to Methodist Homes and Subitha Baghirathan, who spoke about her research into dementia in Bristol’s BME (black and minority ethnic)

communities. Examples of good practice were shared and a resource pack was available for those churches wishing to begin the process of making their place of worship more dementia friendly.

Tony Hall said: “Feedback would indicate that attendees from all denominations found the day really useful, informative, as well as challenging, and there will be a follow-up to this event in a few months to monitor

progress.” The group also organised a “Singing on the Train” session from Temple Meads to Severn Beach, and Dementia Friends sessions were arranged with different organisations. This is an initiative by the Alzheimer's Society. BDAA ran a Dementia Friends Session at Temple Fire Station and talks for all watches have also been arranged at the Avonmouth, Bedminster and Temple Fire Stations. BDAA is five years old on Monday July 9 and will hold a Celebratory Street Party at The Galleries shopping centre in Bristol from 11am to 3pm. Caroline hails progress on hospice revamp CAROLINE Quentin visited St Peter’s Hospice at the start of May to celebrate the Room to Care Appeal passing the £1 million mark. The actress is the appeal patron of the adult hospice which serves Bristol and is based on the outskirts of Westbury-on-Trym. The new £6.53 million inpatient unit at St Peter’s is starting to take shape, helped by generous funding from people from Bishopston and Redland and across Bristol who have supported the scheme through a variety of fundraising activities. Caroline Quentin, recently seen on screen hosting The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes, said: “I’ve picked up a few tips from visiting the properties and learnt to look at buildings and architecture in a different way. “I can see how the architects here have given equal importance to the function and the spirituality of the hospice building. No detail has been spared in the finish, from the wood used to clad the building to the inclusion of natural light in the bathrooms. “I’m proud that I’ve been involved from the very first day. The people of Bristol have raised the challenge of funding this project. I can see that the Room to Care Appeal is coming to fruition.”

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

The hospice is designed to the highest standard, with a vaulted ceiling which gives it a Cathedral-like quality. Full of light and

He said: “The building is now watertight and the first phase of the inpatient unit is around 75 per cent finished. “There is a real sense of purpose for everyone working here. Commuter transport service gets trial run in Henleaze and Westbury Park MYFIRSTMILE, a, new shared urban taxi-bus service, launched in Henleaze and Westbury Park on 15 May. This trial service connects people living in the area to the rapid bus network on the Gloucester Road via a shared hackney-style cab. Developed by Bristol-based tech company Esoterix Systems in conjunction with bus company First, the innovative service is designed to get people out of their cars and onto the bus system by bringing commuters by taxi to a bus stop of their choice. Henleaze and Westbury Park have been selected as trial areas after Esoterix Systems’ analysis showed more than 900 smartphone users commuted to North Bristol or UWE from Gloucester Road. Much thought went into how to reduce these

individual short journeys and led to the development of MYFIRSTMILE. Initially, the service is aimed at the commuter market and the trial has been set up so that

commuters don’t walk more than 250 yards from their doorstep. There are 25 pick up and drop off points along Coldharbour Road, Henleaze Road and roads nearby, as shown by the map. In the morning, passengers catch a MYFIRSTMILE vehicle which is running along prescheduled routes and which will deliver them to a hub on the rapid bus network on Gloucester Road (A38) where they can get a conventional bus to North Bristol or into the city centre. The return journey begins when they arrive at the Co-op car park on the Gloucester Road, where there will be a waiting vehicle available from 3pm to take them home along with other passengers. This service will be different, with vehicles not adhering to a fixed route or timetable, instead operating like a shared taxi. The service is run through a smartphone app where passengers pre-pay and once they have bought their pass they have unlimited access to MYFIRSTMILE and the Bristol Inner Zone

Network. MYFIRSTMILE operates Monday to Friday from 6am to 10.30am travelling to Gloucester Road and from 3pm until 8pm travelling to Henleaze and Westbury Park, with the last vehicle leaving the Co-op car park at 7.45pm. The service costs £6 per day all-inclusive of a First Bristol Inner Zone network bus ticket, £25 per week or £89 per month. All new users get one day’s free travel when they download the app. During pre-launch testing, a passenger said: “Delivered straight onto the bus, I’ve never felt more in control of my time in the morning rush-hour.” The trial is part of the Innovate UK sponsored project MODLE (Mobility on Demand Laboratory Environment) which also includes Bristol City Council and University of the West of England. Dambusters mark 75 years

SQUADRON Leader George ‘Johnny’ Johnson MBE, the last surviving British member of the Dambusters raid marked the 75th anniversary of the raid on May 16 by leading a groundbreaking ceremony for a full-size steel sculpture of a Lancaster bomber. Mr Johnson, aged 96, from Westbury-on-Trym said there was no better site for the tribute to RAF bomber crews who served in World War II which will stand near to the A46 on the Nottinghamshire/Lincolnshire border, the area where crew members trained. A 133-strong squadron of aircrew left for the Dambusters raid on board 19 Lancaster bombers from RAF Scampton, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson. Mr Johnson was aged 22 when he took part in the 1943 air raid using experimental bouncing bombs in Germany, dodging anti-aircraft fire to drop the four-tonne skipping bomb at low altitude over the water on dams in the Ruhr Valley. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed along with significant damage inflicted on

WWII legend Johnny Johnson MBE with ATC Cadets from Westbury-on-Trym 2442 Squadron German factories and mines, disabling Hitler’s industrial heartland. A minute’s silence was held on May 16 at the Bomber Command Memorial in London’s Green Park. Flt Lt Nigel Painter helped to lay 53 pairs of gloves in tribute to the 53 men who died 75 years ago on the Dambusters raid. This moment of reflection was hosted by the Memorial’s guardian and leading RAF welfare charity, the RAF Benevolent Fund. Relatives of those who took part in the raid included

Chris Henderson, son of Sgt Robert Henderson DFM. He commented: “It is important to remember that night, for all of those families whose lives were changed forever, and for all members of the RAF who continue to face danger to protect us. They are safe in the knowledge that, should the worst happen, the RAF Benevolent Fund will be there to support them and their families. “Although my father survived the war, he died while serving at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus, in 1961 aged just 40; I was 15 years old

St Ursula’s Academy Proposed new secondary school aims for Outstanding names its first headteacher A SHORT Ofsted inspection at St Ursula’s E-ACT Academy found that the school continues to be a good school and is improving towards being outstanding. Ofsted Inspector Claire Mirams reported that: “The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection. Based on the evidence gathered during this short inspection, I am of the opinion that the school has demonstrated strong practice and marked improvement in certain areas. This may indicate that the school is improving towards being outstanding. “Your ambitious vision for continuous improvement extends across the school community. High-quality professional development and partnerships with other schools have led to improvements in the quality of teaching, leadership and

governance.” An item of note was that pupils’ attainment of the standards expected in reading, writing and mathematics is higher than the national averages by the end of both Year 2 and Year 6 and there is greater depth of understanding. The report stated that “Pupils are proud to attend St Ursula’s. They say that they feel safe and that there is no bullying. They speak highly of the school’s broad and relevant curriculum, including opportunities to develop their computing skills and creativity through art and design.” The next steps for the school are to ensure that disadvantaged pupils with lower starting points in key stage 1 use their knowledge of phonics when spelling unfamiliar words and that progress of disadvantaged pupils improves to match that of other pupils in all subjects.

CATHEDRAL Schools Trust has appointed Eiron Bailey as the very first Headteacher of CST Trinity Academy, their new secondary school scheduled to open in north Bristol in September 2019. Eiron has worked as a Senior Leader at Bristol Cathedral Choir School (BCCS) for the last nine years. He is passionate about seeing all children succeed and believes that education should focus on both academic and ‘whole person’ development. He is particularly involved in music and the arts as a national leader and speaker with an outstanding track record. He is currently musical director of the Bristol Youth Orchestra and has worked closely with Bristol Plays Music to develop their city wide strategy. Eiron Bailey said: “It is a great privilege to be appointed Headteacher of CST Trinity Academy and an exciting opportunity to build a world class school in north Bristol. A consultation on the new secondary school is running until 15 June and provides a great opportunity to have your say. Visit: www.trinityacademybristol.org/ section-10-consultation/ or come and see us on Tuesday 5 June 5.307pm at St James’ Church, Romney Ave, Bristol BS7 9TD.

The festival was held at the University of Bristol's Chemistry Department and the girls had to solve a mystery using chemical analysis. They were judged on their analytical skills, team work, lab skills and knowledge. They finished top in the Salters' Prize out of 15 teams from the maintained and independent sector.

The U16 girls football team, already crowned Bristol and South Gloucestershire champions, travelled to Frys Club in Keynsham to face Katherine Lady Berkeley School in the County Cup final. Determined to finish on a high after an already incredible season, the midfield pairing of Anna and Zoe dominated the centre of the park, showing off their range of passing as well as showing some sublime touches. Anna scored two early goals to put Team BFS in the driving seat, but rather than maintain possession and defend their lead, the girls went on the attack for more goals. The KLB defence couldn't handle the exceptional movement of Women of the Match Ellie, drawing in defenders before turning into the space left in behind, providing her with opportunity after opportunity. Clifton Robinsons Hockey Club (CRHC), who train and play at Badminton School, Red Maids High School and Coombe Dingle won the under 14s championship at Lee Valley Hockey centre based at the Olympic Park in London on May 12. The boys won 2-1 on penalties against Manchester club Brooklands HC after a tense and exciting final ended goalless - though both teams had chances to win in open play. Robinsons goalkeeper Ben

Hockey heroics help land GB title Bonwitt-Marsh delivered heroics, as he saved 4 out 5 penalties whilst Joe Durie and Ollie King scored for the Bristol side. Clifton Robinsons reached the final after winning their group on goal difference from hockey giants Surbiton (with whom they drew 1-1), and after 4-1 and 5-0 wins over Southgate and Stourport respectively. Robinsons were top goal scorers on the day and deserved Champions winning much praise for their ‘exciting brand of attacking hockey’. The CRHC U14 girls finished 3rd in the girls final played at the same venue on the following day. After losing to eventual winners Surbiton, the Clifton girls battled hard for 2-1 and 3-0 victories over Southgate and Alderley Edge. Meanwhile on the same weekend in Nottingham the Club’s Boys and Girls U12s both ended up 4th out of the 10 teams competing in the National In2Hockey Club finals.

“We have a fantastic record of achieving success at regional and national level, and tend to attract really ambitious young players. Whilst we had high hopes for the team, being crowned National Club Champions was an amazing feeling for all the boys and parents supporting. There were tears of joy...!” said head junior coach Ian King. “Many of the young players in the club are from the BS9 and

BS6 areas, including children who went to Elmlea, Stoke Bishop and Henleaze junior schools, and others who now attend BFS and RGS. Some have only been playing for two or three years. "Many of our boys started playing sports like football, rugby and cricket but seem to really love the challenge of learning the technical skills needed in super fast game that hockey has become!”

n EDUCATION HUNDREDS of Bristol children including some from Nova Primary in Shirehampton put on a show at the Colston Hall on May 14 in front of a huge audience. This was a celebration of their learning over the last few months through a creative programme commissioned by Crimestoppers in the West Country and delivered by arts provider Unique Voice. It has given them a powerful voice about how they feel about crime in their communities. Through drama they have explored healthy relationships , hate crime and diversity and how to speak up about crime. The programme is in its fourth year and only happens because of generous funding from partners and trusts. This year’s programme has been part funded by the Percy Hoskins Trust and aims to raise awareness of Crimestoppers, which is the only independent charity in the UK helping to fight crime and guarantees anonymity, always. Redmaids' High hosts STEM conference IN May, 300 girls from across the south-west and beyond attended a STEM careers conference at Redmaids’ High School. Cyber security, structural engineering, crime scene detection, code breaking, machine learning and volcanoes were just some of the many subjects covered in the 20 workshops on offer as part of the

day, dubbed Tomorrow’s World #WomenInSTEM. The aim was to inspire the next generation of young women across the region to consider careers in the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths. Experts from academia and industry were keen to be involved with names like Dyson, Renishaw and Broadcom

all signing up to provide sessions. The conference was free to attend and open to all girls in Year 10. In total 21 state and independent schools took up the offer and participated in the day. Broadcaster and author Dr Emily Grossman, who is an expert in molecular biology and genetics and holds a PhD in cancer research, delivered a keynote address on bucking stereotypes in STEM and

following your passions. The day concluded with a performance of Ada Ada Ada, an interactive, wearable technology show based on the life of Ada Lovelace, who in the 1840s wrote what is widely regarded as the world's first complex algorithm, a century before the computers we know today even existed. The show was brought to the conference with support from the University of Bristol.

The Foster Care Fortnight Roadshow is a series of free drop in events aiming to recruit foster carers and give prospective carers the chance to quiz the fostering team and a current foster carer. Almost 700 children are in care in Bristol and Bristol City Council are keen to encourage people from all walks of life to step forward and become carers. Councillor Helen Godwin, Cabinet Member for Women, Children and Families, said: “The wellbeing and development of children in care is a major

priority for the council and we have a 365 day a year focus on encouraging people to step forward to become carers. What foster carers provide for some of the most vulnerable children and young people in society is immeasurable. I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact a safe and loving home can have on a young person who has not had the best start in life. “Our experienced and knowledgeable team can answer your questions, give advice and share the stories that show just how important the role is. I would encourage people to get in touch and find out more about beginning their own rewarding journey to making a major and positive difference to a child in care’s life.”

n NEWS EACH year in June, Volunteers Week sees charities around the UK celebrating the contribution made by their volunteers and helpers. It’s a fantastic month to highlight volunteering in all its diversity and thank the people who give up their time. Two Bristol charities celebrating the fantastic support they receive this month are Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham, and Home Start Bristol, both of whom rely on the work of volunteers to support very different generations in the city. Jules Appleby, a marketing consultant to charities, says: “Volunteering has surprising benefits, including the chance to make new friends, gain new skills, and even reduce stress. For charities and non-profit organisations, volunteers are often the very lifeblood of what they do – and some, like Home Start Bristol, genuinely couldn’t continue their vital work without the goodwill of individuals.” For those with an hour to spare a week, Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham is inviting

Local charities speak out in celebration of volunteers volunteers to accompany older residents on appointments or outings; whilst Home Start Bristol runs courses for would-be volunteers three times a year, who then go onto work with struggling local families for 2-3 hours a week. “Home Start Bristol is looking to expand its Trustee board this year and would welcome anyone who’d like to become part of a great team to help build on the charity’s success,” continues Jules. “I’ve been working with them for two years and am always amazed at the incredible work such a small team can achieve.” The NCVO’s Volunteer Week from 1-7 June is a perfect time to join the 14 million people in the UK, who already give their time for a good cause. Temple Homes and Ruben Property join forces ETHICAL lettings and property management company Temple Homes has acquired the portfolio of Ruben Property, in a move which brings two young business people together in historic offices in central Bristol. Temple Homes was first set up four years ago as an alternative to the high street property agency, as a company where the rights of tenants are held in the same regard as those of the landlord. It has now acquired the portfolio of Ruben Property, established by Ben Dembo in the 1980s and recently taken over by his daughter and co-director Hattie. To coincide with the acquisition, Temple Homes has rebranded and has moved into the very same offices in Picton Street, Montpelier, occupied by Mr Dembo’s company from 1988 to 2001. The expanded Temple Homes now has a portfolio of some 220 properties across Bristol, from Horfield to Bishopston and Westbury Park, a mixture of letonly and managed properties. With co-director Ms Dembo, 24, obtaining shareholding in Temple Homes, the pair have a solid footing on which to establish the future of their company. Ms Dembo runs the finances and day-to-day business operations at Temple Homes

while Mr Mueller focuses on business growth. She said: “This partnership has given me a chance to conduct business in a way that I feel is right. “Finding a new business partner with the same ethos and goals as me is a considerable achievement and we can now move forward with Temple Homes’ goal to change the perception of the industry.”

Mr Mueller said: “We’re in a position loaded with potential. We have a large portfolio, consistent growth and a reputation for prioritising quality of service to both landlords and tenants, over profit. “It’s hard for tenants at the moment. There aren’t many who enjoy the experience of renting. We want to change that, while helping people get

a roof over their heads. But we also recognise that landlords want to capitalise on their major assets. There’s nothing wrong with that either. We manage this by working with considerate landlords who have the same philosophy as us. “It’s things like not marking up contractor costs to landlords, like keeping our tenant referencing service in house so we can build a rapport with tenants whilst also accommodating personal circumstances. We will hold viewings outside office hours and give all tenants until 10am the following morning to submit offers, so people are not rushed into decisions and so that all parties have an equal opportunity to offer. “Our openness extends to the property inspections on our portfolio of managed homes, where the reports generated are sent to both our landlords and tenants to ensure our comments, positive or negative, are transparent. This openness nurtures respect between all of our clients. “We’re still making our mark and, at the moment, I’m constantly having to convince people – especially parents of tenants – that we’re different. I want to reach the point where people know the brand for the values we’re bringing to the industry.

Grandparents: We want a safer earth GRANDPARENTS For a Safe Earth held a demonstration on 11 May outside the branch of Barclay's Bank in the High Street of Westbury-on-Trym. Grandparents waved placards and handed out leaflets for two hours from 11am-1pm. The spirited protest was held to draw attention to Barclay's investments in fossil fuels. Spokesman Barry Cash said: "We're a group of Grandparents and Elders who wish to leave a safe world for future generations. The continued use of fossil fuels will deny our grandchildren the quality of life that we've enjoyed. “We've been well received by members if the public today. “Barclays are financing fracking in Lancashire and the building of a pipeline to exploit Tar sands in Canada. Many of Barclay's customers were surprised and displeased to learn this.”

us have served for 10 years or more. For various genuine and personal reasons, the Redland May Fair Committee has decided to step down. A new team is needed to take up the challenge, with some fresh ideas and perhaps a whole new approach to the staging of the event for 2019. We are willing to share our experience and contacts with this new team if required. If you know of a group who might be willing to take up the challenge and continue the tradition of a community event on Redland Green then please contact RCAS by email on info@ rcas.org.uk We are very grateful to all those who have supported us over the years. The event has worked closely with Redland Church, the Tennis and Bowls clubs and with a number of schools and other organisations to make the day go smoothly. A lot of money has been raised for charities and schools over many years. The event provides a great opportunity for people to stay in contact with local friends and neighbours. We are proud of what we have achieved and gained much pleasure and friendship along the way. We would really like to see the tradition of a May Fair on Redland Green continue. Read on: more volunteers needed to help children AS a part of a plan to improve reading in Bristol, Mayor Marvin Rees is keen to ensure that every child that needs one can have a volunteer, reading one-to-one with them in their school. Helping a child that is falling behind with their reading has the potential to change lives for the better. A recruitment drive has been launched seeking more than 300 reading volunteers from all areas of the city including Henleaze, Westbury Park and Westbury-on-Trym Volunteers will read with children aged 5, 6 and 7 year old who have fallen behind with their reading, improving

their confidence and overall reading skills and encouraging a love of reading. Those taking part need to be able to communicate clearly, work methodically through a set programme of activity, commit to volunteering for 12 weeks and be free for at least an hour during school hours Monday to Friday. The next training day is on Thursday 7 June, 9am 4pm, at the offices of Grant Thornton, 2 Glass Wharf, Bristol, BS2 0EL. Salute to unsung heroes in Carers Week CARERS Week, held on 11-17 June, is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. Carers don’t choose to become carers. Many feel they are just doing what anyone else would in the same situation; looking after a relative or friend and just getting on with it. But taking on a caring role can mean facing a life of poverty, isolation, frustration, ill health and depression. Many carers don’t even see themselves as carers. They don’t ask for help and they are completely hidden from support services. The majority struggle alone and do not know that help is available to them. Carers Support Centre works locally to provide a range of services to carers of any age living in the Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym areas and across Bristol. These include information and advice,

carers’ groups, training, breaks for carers, and the Carers Emergency Card. Keith Sinclair, chief executive, said: “Most carers first contact us through CarersLine and, when they do, they are often near breaking point. Our support workers guide them through the range of services available to make sure they are getting the best support. “Our message to someone who is caring for a relative or friend is: don't wait for a crisis. Find out what support is available now.” Every carer has a right to a Carer's Assessment and the carer's physical, mental and emotional wellbeing is at the heart of this assessment. The person being cared for doesn't need to be getting support themselves from the council. If you or someone you know is a carer in need of help, contact CarersLine on 0117 965 2200, email carersline@ carerssupportcentre.org. uk or see the website www. carerssupportcentre.org.uk

YOU don’t have to look far to find a vast canopy of trees in Bristol. The Victorians left a glorious tree legacy for the city, with oaks and sycamore’s gracing the Downs and blossoming cherry trees in the leafy streets and parks of Henleaze, Westbury Park and Westbury-on-Trym. To celebrate this, The Bristol Tree Forum is hosting its first Bristol Tree of the Year Competition and is seeking worthy nominations. The purpose of the competition is to increase public awareness of the arboreal heritage of Bristol and the many benefits that trees bring us. Local Bristol community groups and organisations are

invited to submit their candidate tree before 1 September 2018. The tree must be within the Bristol City Council boundary and in a public space accessible to everyone. And, just one tree per group or organisation may be submitted. Candidates will be shortlisted by Bristol Tree Forum and the public invited to vote for their favourite tree from 15 October until midnight, 15 November 2018. The winner will be announced during National Tree Week, held between 24 November and 2 December 2018. To enter the competition visit bristoltreeforum.org and click on: Tree of the Year 2018.

WHILE most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

n NEWS A BRISTOL City Council housing development has won two architecture awards and recognition for its sustainability. Challender Court in Henbury picked up the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) South West Sustainability Award alongside a RIBA South West 2018 accolade. The project, which comprises eight one-bed properties, was commended for demonstrating a “creative response to the UK’s housing crisis, making excellent use of a constrained brownfield site.” The homes were designed to meet the Passivhaus building standards which aims to reduce energy usage, during construction and once occupied, by adopting a “fabric first” approach that provides excellent thermal insulation. This will result in extremely energy efficient properties which will see household utility bills dramatically reduced. The houses are part of the council’s New Build Housing Programme which began in 2014, regenerating brownfield sites, to provide new high quality homes across the city. The council has completed 81 new homes to date since the start of this programme. Councillor Paul Smith, cabinet member for housing, said: “I am delighted to see our innovative use of brownfield sites to provide sustainable, affordable housing, has been recognised. “All our new council homes are built to high standards, making the best use of land we

New council homes in Henbury win top architecture award have available. We are constantly looking for ways to accelerate our build programme even more to address the real shortage of affordable housing in the city. “I would like to thank our housing team, along with the contractors and architects, for helping to provide much needed housing for the city. The Mayor of Bristol has set out the commitment of building 2,000 new homes – 800 affordable – a year by 2020. As part of this commitment, the council is not just looking at numbers, but also at the quality of housing and communities created. As part of the programme four sites are under construction, which will provide a further 64 homes. The council has also obtained consent for a mixed tenure development of 133 new homes at Ashton Vale, 53 of which will be council homes. All of the sites that form part of Bristol City Council’s new build housing scheme make use of land owned by the Housing Department, with a particular focus on derelict, brownfield sites that can be brought back into use such as former garages and council depots. Tom Russell, from Emmett Russell Architects, said: “We are thrilled that Challender Court has won these two prestigious

awards. It provides recognition that Bristol is leading the way in delivering a new generation of innovative low energy council housing.” The RIBA South West awards recognise examples of innovative and outstanding new architecture in the region. From a shortlist of 13, and 35 initial entries, the eight winning 2018 projects range from Bristol to Cornwall. All the regional award winners will be considered for the RIBA National Awards, with the successful recipients announced in June. Those collecting national awards will then be considered for the RIBA Stirling Prize. Chair of the South West

awards jury, Jo White, said: “Challender Court provides an excellent reference for the sensitive redevelopment of brownfield sites; whilst so much of the industry effort if focussed on large scale development, this scheme demonstrates that an intelligent ‘boutique’ approach has the potential to unlock even the most unpromising sites, to provide attractive, robust and sustainable homes.” The delivery team is about to start work on Phase 4 of the programme, which will see a further eleven sites brought forward, ready for construction from 2019-21 so the programme can continue and support the commitment to housing.

Bristol North Baths building for sale THE former Bristol North Baths building has been put up for sale by Bristol City Council. The Grade II listed building is advertised through agents Alder King who are seeking offers for the freehold interest with vacant possession. The building on Gloucester Road, dating from 1915, was developed in recent years with a view to becoming a medical facility with a hydrotherapy unit. Following disputes with the developer work stopped before the project was completed in 2016. Work on flats and the Bishopston Library next door was completed but the former swimming baths have remained

empty. Physiotherapist Keith James, who runs practices in Westbury Park and Clifton, was involved with the previous project and said: “The building is close to completion but needs a significant investment to get it finished. “Once it’s completed it will be a great facility for the area. “I am still interested, especially if it became a medical facility. I’ve invested a lot of time, money and effort into the planning design of the centre, especially the design of the hydrotherapy unit. I’ve put so much time and effort into it that I would like to see it out.”

n PRIMAL POSTURE with

Clare Chapman

As we head towards the summer festival and street party season it’s timely to take a look at Samba, a particularly popular, fun and infectious Brazilian dance form. In Gokhale Method postural health classes we often tap into its ability to promote healthy posture. Why is that? • It involves a lot of lateral motion and hip mobility, something especially needed in our culture. Many of us tend to ‘hold’ our pelvis in a somewhat fixed position, limiting our hip movement. • It engages the gluteal muscles, which, though vital for healthy walking balance and propulsion, remain under-developed given a poor, tucked-under pelvic position. • It can model other aspects of healthy gait, including stretching of the calves and psoas muscle, and straightening of the back leg while bending the front knee. In the neighbourhoods of Brazil you can still find celebratory Samba de Roda, or ‘Samba in the round’, which features solo dancers surrounded by musicians and other dancers, singing and clapping and sequentially inviting others to take their turn. Sometimes Samba dancers wear elaborate headdresses or carry things on their heads while they show off their dancing skill. This and a strong emphasis on percussive beat harks back to the African ancestry of Brazil.

Samba for summer!

Like most indigenous and folk dance, Samba reflects body movements that are harmonious with healthy posture and function. Dances are usually intimately bound with regional culture and physical skills. This is an interesting contrast to some modern dance forms which can demand injurious movement, and,

being performance rather than participation orientated, relentless innovation and rehearsal. You can see authentic Samba de Roda on our Gokhale Method YouTube Channel - just search ‘Learn How to Dance Samba Lesson Original Classes’. The video shows furiously fast footwork… in our posture classes we take a more elementary approach! But I happily recall two students who came to study the Gokhale Method at the suggestion of their Latin Dance teacher, who despaired of their ‘English’ stance! They rediscovered the length in their spine - and enjoyed finding their hips! If you would like to hear more about natural posture and movement – and perhaps even dance a basic Samba – you are welcome to book a Free Workshop place directly at: www. gokhalemethod.com • S unday 27th May, 3pm, Spicer+Cole, Gloucester Rd • S unday 10th June, 6pm, Online • Sunday 8th July, 6pm, Online • S unday 15th July, 3pm, Spicer+Cole, Gloucester Rd

n NEWS BRISTOL Male Voice Choir is celebrating its 50th Anniversary year with a gala concert featuring one of Wales' top-ranking male voice choirs, the famous Morriston Orpheus choir. The choirs are joined by soloist Niall Allen (baritone), of Only Men Aloud, and the concert is compered by Bristol's own Emma Britton of BBC Radio Bristol. Choirmaster John Hollyman said: “The significance of this, our 50th year, is the way that we have achieved a balance of experience in the choir, the musical confidence and learning of the older members blending with the younger voices and performing standards of the members that have arrived in the last few years. “Something like 300 choristers have sung with us since 1968 and the current choir is looking forward to many more recordings, performances for charity and representing our city on tour in the coming years.” The choir began in Filton almost 50 years ago with many of its original members employed locally at British Aerospace and Rolls Royce. It has grown in size and stature over the years, and now recruits Bristol-wide. To hear a feast of music, come and celebrate on this special occasion, at 7.30pm on Saturday 7 July, at All Saints church, Pembroke Road, Clifton, Bristol BS8 3ED. Tickets are available via the choir website bristolmvc.org.uk or on the door.

Beavers learn about clean air

WESTBURY-ON-TRYM Beavers and staff from the University of West of England came together on May 9 to discuss air quality and its impacts on health, ahead of the first National Clean Air Day taking place on June 21. Air pollution has been shown to exacerbate lung and heart conditions as well as affecting the brain development of young children. The two major causes

of air pollution are particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide gas. The Beavers took part in an experiment to mimic those which scientists do in laboratories to test for nitrogen dioxide, comparing samples which might be found in a park and

a busy road. They discovered that since traffic is the major source of air pollution in Bristol,

the air quality on busy roads is significantly worse than in green spaces.

June, 2018

n NEWS BRISTOL joined over 100 cities around the world on May 12 calling on governments and health officials to end the inequality of funding and research into Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). ME sufferers, often hidden from view because of the nature of their illness, their families and friends gathered in Queen Square as part of #MillionsMissing, a global day of protest spearheaded by international health network ME Action to highlight the plight of sufferers and the urgent need for funding research into the neurological disease. People from across Bristol and the surrounding areas contributed pairs of shoes labelled with a short message about their experience of living with ME. These shoes unused due to the debilitating symptoms of ME - were laid out in Queen Square as a poignant representation of those “missing” from their everyday lives. “Everybody that came with me was deeply affected by it. It was so moving, especially when people read out the stories of sufferers and looked at the pictures of shoes,” said Sarah, from Bishopston, a member of the Bristol Support Group. Karen, from Horfield, developed ME after a bout of flu: “There was something very special about people all coming together and being heard and seen and believed. So many of us spend so much time at home or on our own and to have that connection was worth it. “It’s a very invisible condition where you can be housebound or bed bound for years. We

Locals join #MillionsMissing protest for ME research cash

know from the facebook support groups that there were many people who couldn’t be there on the day watched it online.” Sarah first approached her doctor with fatigue and over a period of 18 months her health declined to the point where she had to stop work as she explained: “The fatigue is one symptom but then you’ve got the brain fog, forgetting words and to do basic things like turn off the hob. “Some people have immunity and hormone problems plus sensory overload issues - I’ve left rooms because the TV is on and it’s too bright. Everyone is slightly different but there is a core group of symptoms that we all experience.” Karen added: “Unless you’ve had ME you don’t understand that level of exhaustion. A lot of our members have to use a commode as they can’t make it

to the bathroom. The severely affected will have to lie in a darkened room with headphones on to block out any noise, wearing a mask to block out any light.” ME/CFS is a devastating, complex, multi-system disease, which affects the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system and metabolism. Those affected experience an extreme form of fatigue and a severe worsening of symptoms after even minimal physical or mental exertion. Behavioural and exercise therapies approved by NICE are offered as treatments to manage symptoms but with varying degrees of success and are currently under review. Despite the illness affecting an estimated 250,000 men, women and children in the UK, little money is going into medical research to target the causes of the disease. From 2006-2015, just £4 per patient per year was spent on research funding for ME, only a small percentage of which had a biomedical focus. By comparison, £80 per patient per year was spent on MS research. Many people know someone with ME but find that they’ve lost contact with them as their

friend drops out of friendship circles while struggling to cope with debilitating symptoms. Suffers learn to pace themselves and understand that if they go beyond their limits there will be a payback. And, there will be other triggers that make things worse. Computer use due to the bright light can trigger a relapse and emotional or physical bursts of energy make someone with ME feel exhausted. Acupuncture, yoga and osteopathy help to manage symptoms but all have to be paid for privately. Support is much in need and offered by the Bristol ME Support Group www. bristolmesupportgroup. wordpress.com which runs meet-ups across the city (at the Wellington Pub for Bishopston) on a regular basis and provides newsletters. An award-winning documentary is available on Netflix, Unrest by Jennifer Brea, co-founder of the ME Action Network about her own experiences with ME. Karen said: “I avoided the support groups for a number of years but they are vital for a condition that is so much misunderstood. You can chat online or meet up with other people with ME.”

n FROM OUR MP

What a grand job, Jane

Darren Jones column

R

EMARKABLY, it’s already been one year since the last General Election. Over the Summer, you’ll be getting an annual report from me setting out what has happened in the past year. You’ll also be invited to join my new network, Powered by You, which will get you plugged into my work so that you can help set what I should be focussing on both locally and nationally on your behalf. And, if we’ve helped you in the past year as a constituency office, you’ll also be asked to give us feedback on our service. My small staff team based in Westbury-on-Trym do a fantastic job and work really hard to help as many people as possible, but we’re always open to hearing feedback to try and improve our service to you. After all, you pay for us through your taxes!

Your Voice in Parliament As your voice in Parliament, it’s my job to make sure Parliament and the Government hears directly from you. That’s why I was so thrilled to speak in Westminster Hall on behalf of Jane Jackson from Henleaze who has been campaigning over so many years to get a small change in the law that gives grandparents some legal rights to see their grandchildren, following a separation or divorce of the grandchildren’s parents. Jane has done a fantastic job and it looks like she’s persuaded the Government to change the law! Well done, Jane! I recently met with the Henleaze Social Care Support Group, which reminded me how much responsibility family members take on in caring for their loved ones. I’ve now had to raise the issue of overnight payments in Parliament. Care homes or individuals paying for overnight care used to be able to pay a fixed rate for night cover because, all being well, that worker could sleep for most of the night. But a court case has ruled that this is a breach of the National Minimum Wage rules. That’s fine, if it applied to future payments. But instead care homes and individuals are now on the hook for a six year back payment, which many can’t afford. I’m really concerned that this could put some care homes into bankruptcy, so I’ve been pressing the Government to step in. In other news from Parliament, I attended a series of meetings in Brussels on science and research collaboration post-Brexit (if it happens!). The Science and Technology Committee will now put together our own agreement, including on immigration rights, for the Government’s consideration. I was delighted to support the campaign to force British Overseas Territories to become transparent in respect of the ownership of companies, assets and trusts – a key victory for tackling corruption

and the flows of dirty money into Britain. Your Champion in Bristol The past month has been all about the kids. From young carers being awarded for their often unsung hard work, to inspirational local charities bringing joy to the lives of young people. I was delighted to have attended the Bristol Young Heroes Awards – it was an inspirational evening and all the nominees deserve the recognition they received. And I also recently met with Flamingo Chicks and Light Year Foundation which are both based in Henleaze. Flamingo Chicks provide dance classes for children undergoing treatment and for those with complex needs plus a support network for parents facing shared challenges. In just three years, the group has gone from start-up to seeing over 2,000 children coming through their classes each year. Lightyear Foundation works to make science education more accessible for children in the UK. They help to break down the barriers to STEM participation for disabled children, at the same time as using science to help them deal with specific challenges and development issues. If you’d like to keep in touch with what I’m up to please sign up to my newsletter at www. darren-jones.co.uk or check out my Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/darrenjonesmp) or Twitter (www.twitter.com/darrenpjones). You can also tune in on Wednesday nights at 19:30 for my weekly Facebook Live from Westminster. And if you’d like to book an appointment at my local surgery, or want me to come to a local event, then please get in touch with my office. n NEWS FROM THE MAYOR

We are meeting the need for school places in north Bristol ENABLING our city’s young people to get off to the best start in life and raising aspirations for all is one of my key priorities. My administration, particularly my cabinet lead for education and skills, Cllr Anna Keen, is working hard with our Learning City partners on this agenda. Central to this is increasing school places as demand is reaching an all-time high. In the past few years over 10,000 additional places have been created in Bristol. We are looking to expand existing secondary schools to meet demand while working in partnership with other organisations to build new schools. One example of this is the plan approved at a recent cabinet meeting to spend £25 million on a new secondary school in Bristol. CST Trinity Academy is set to be built on land adjoining Stoke Park primary school in Lockleaze. It will be run by Cathedral Schools Trust, which already runs a number of other schools in the region including Bristol Cathedral Choir School. It is planned to open for Year 7 students in September 2019, growing year-onyear to an eventual capacity of 1,220 students, including a sixth-form.

We have also approved £1.7 million to expand Bristol Brunel Academy by 80 places – 16 per year group – at the school in Speedwell Road over the next five years. Both of these initiatives are funded by the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA). Work is currently under way at Cotham and St Bede’s schools to provide more places by the end of this year. We know that we need new schools in South Bristol and East Central Bristol as a priority, and are in conversation with the ESFA to ensure plans are being developed which are right for Bristol. As well as this, Whitehall primary school has expanded its capacity by a third and is now able to accept 30 extra pupils each year. The project was delivered through a partnership between Bristol City Council, the Local Enterprise Partnership and Skanska, and is a great example of working collaboratively to achieve the best outcome. As well as increasing school places, we are working to raise aspirations in secondary school pupils by ensuring meaningful career and work choices are widely available. Last week, I visited my old school, City Academy, to celebrate the

Staff jump to it to highlight 'kangaroo care' NEO-NATAL nurses dressed up as kangaroos on May 15 to promote skin to skin bonding for premature babies and to raise money for special body wraps for parents to aid baby’s development and reduce illness. Staff in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Southmead Hospital are raising money for Southmead Hospital Charity by dressing as Kangaroos to promote ‘Kangaroo Care’, a method of caring for stabilised low-weight or premature babies outside incubators. As part of International Kangaroo Care Awareness Day on Tuesday May 15, the team also hosted a cake sale and a ‘kangaroo-care-athon’ where parents on the unit were encouraged hold their babies skin to skin. Kangaroo care aids baby’s development, promotes parent and baby interaction, reduces the baby’s risk of illness and helps them to maintain a healthy body temperature. And, each baby on the NICU will be given a kangaroo book, mug and toy - funded by Southmead Hospital Charity to promote the International Kangaroo Care Awareness initiative. Southmead Hospital Charity

has also funded reclining chairs for parents to lie with their babies to facilitate skin to skin contact. Michelle Jackson, NICU matron, said: “Kangaroo care has been found to have huge benefits for baby - to reduce instances of infection, hypothermia, lower respiratory tract disease and

reduce the length of stay in hospital. “It also increases weight gain, brain development and helps with breathing, heart rate, and blood sugar regulation as well as contributing to more successful breastfeeding. “Parents who do kangaroo care find it a very satisfying way

to bond with and nurture their baby, particularly after spending their first weeks in an incubator. “We hope to be able to buy each parent a special kangaroo sling to use while on the unit.” You can support NICU via www.southmeadhospitalcharity. org.uk/NICU

John Henry Iles is honoured in style

CITY of Bristol Brass Band performed at the unveiling of a blue plaque to commemorate Bristol-born entrepreneur, musician and impresario, John Henry Iles. Lord Mayor Councillor Lesley Alexander did the honours at a ceremony in St Andrews Park, outside his matrimonial home at 91 Somerville Road. The ceremony, which was facilitated by the Worshipful Company of Musicians (who award the Iles Medal for services to brass bands), was attended by his grandson and great granddaughter as well as members of Bristol Civic Society who designed the plaque and arranged the installation. The brass band concert attracted a good crowd of onlookers enjoying the musical interlude on a Sunday afternoon at the end of April. Band Chair, Steve Ellis, commented: "This has come about through a chance conversation between one of our members and his former neighbour, who had been researching the inventor Gordon Iles and became interested in his father John Henry. The band are delighted to have been able to help see the project through and mark the occasion with a short concert for this important local character who did so much to promote and develop brass bands in the first half of the 20th century." A colourful and diverse entrepreneur, John Henry Iles was born in Old Market in 1871 and had his first property overlooking St Andrews Park. The family greengrocer business was eventually taken over and ultimately became part of the Gateway supermarket chain. In his Bristol days John Henry also played for Gloucester CC at the same time as W G Grace. His interest in brass bands began in 1898, when visiting Manchester and attending Belle Vue Gardens, where he heard some of the band contest. He purchased the struggling British Bandsman magazine and also R Smith

& Co music publishers and promoted a mass band concert at the Royal Albert Hall for Boer War veterans in 1900. He went on to found a national brass band festival at the Crystal Palace, heavily promoting it up and down the country along with a world tour by the famous old band, Besses o' th' Barn. John Henry Iles is most well-known for founding Dreamworld amusement Park in Margate and owned many such parks throughout Europe, stretching from Cairo to St Petersburg and including Belle Vue. By then he was the effective controller of both the National and British Open Brass Band championships. In 1919 he was elected

Chairman of the London Press Club and in 1932 he was elected Master of the Worshipful Company of Musicians in the City of London, an honour to be later bestowed on his two sons and his grandson. John Iles thanked everyone who has been involved with the commemoration, and for the great honour that has been bestowed upon his grandfather. He said: “Thinking about what he achieved and where he did it one really wonders how he could manage without a computer or a mobile phone. He was quite a remarkable man so thank you very much for all those involved with honouring him today.

Truth “When truth threatened my life, I told a lie...” A thought-provoking song theatre show is coming to Westbury-on-Trym, exploring the once-simple notion of Truth in our messy modern age of fake news. Truth is a spellbinding fusion of song and choreography which uses real testimonies collected from all over the world. Some are brutal, some hilarious but all are presented in a fresh and exhilarating style that truly pushes the idea of what theatre could be. The show asks the difficult questions such as, how does telling the truth or lying shape our lives? What is the impact of speaking the truth on a family, a person, a country? Does the truth exist? Helen Chadwick, composer and creator, has been commissioned to create song theatre performances for the Royal Opera House and Salisbury

and Greenwich festivals. For this show she’s joined forces with Olivier award winning and Tony nominated director Steven Hoggett (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, The Curious Incident of The Dog In The Night-time) where they’ve worked with personal stories collected from individuals all over the world. These stories describe a moment when someone told a truth or a lie, and the impact of doing so on their life; testimonies that are by turns devastating, hilarious and touching. The vocal and gestural world created by performers Victoria Couper, Krystian Godlewski, Liz Kettle and Helen Chadwick charges the power of the material with emotion and beauty, inviting us to reflect on our own truth and lies. This highly anticipated show is touring nationally and can be seen at Westbury-on-Trym Village Hall on Friday 1 June,

It comes after a fairly active sequence published monthly since last September. Practice this pose to promote flexibility in the hip joints and relief from mental turmoil.

Medical benefits: Practice Janu Sirsasana (along with the other forward bends) to bring high blood pressure under control. Acidity, bronchitis, colitis, leg deformity, diabetes, kidney problems and prostate problems, can also be tackled by working intelligently and regularly in this pose. 1. n IT HOME HELP

Living with Windows updates HARDLY a week goes by it seems without your PC informing you it's in the middle of doing a “Windows Update” - often taking an eternity to shut down and restart. So what ARE these updates and why do we need them? Windows Updates are nothing new - Microsoft have been sending them for years – they're just a bit more frequent these days, and, for various reasons, we certainly DO need them. The updates are essentially improvements to the Windows Operating System (Windows 7, 8 or 10). They fall into three main groups; 1. Security Updates – Microsoft's response to new security threats to its operating system – it's

He is also a web designer/builder, photographer, father of two and keen sportsman. essential these are kept up to date 2. “ Bug” fixes – Fixes for newly identified errors in the way the operating system works – again, its very useful to get these problems fixed 3. Features upgrades – Developments of new design and new features for Windows 10. The latter is a new departure. Microsoft have decided that Windows 10 will be the last “new” version of Windows – there won't be a Windows 11. The plan is to regularly upgrade and develop the existing version – hence there will be a lot more updates than we've ever been used to.

Twice a year - in Spring and Autumn - Microsoft release a major design update. These are usually big downloads and can take hours to install. So don't panic if your PC seems to occasionally take an eternity to close or open. It may well just be Windows working behind the scenes to update itself. Updates can seem a continual intrusion by Microsoft sometimes, but they are updates you definitely need to keep abreast of – including some critical security fixes – and they aren't going to go away, so get used to 'em!! Medical documentary company gives £20,000 to Jessie May charity THE production company behind a hit Channel 5 documentary series has donated £20,000 to a local charity which cares for terminally ill children. Knickerbockerglory TV, which has produced six series’ of popular show GPs: Behind Closed Doors, selected Bristolbased charity Jessie May as one of its nominated charities to receive a £20,000 donation. The series is currently being filmed at Horfield Health Centre and offers a fascinating observational insight into the private world of a GP surgery. Dr Anna Graham, who features on the show is also a trustee of Jessie May and put the charity forward for consideration. She said: “Knickerbockerglory TV select a handful of charities every year to donate some of their profits to. They ask staff and associates to nominate and vote for special causes and I’m absolutely delighted that this year Jessie May was one of the charities selected following my recommendation. I wanted to put forward a small Bristol charity which does great work in the community and Jessie May was the perfect example. “This kind of donation will make a huge impact to the lives of the families Jessie May helps. It means that the charity can plan ahead and ensure

that terminally ill children who aren’t being supported by its specialist nurses can benefit from its services as soon as possible following referral. Jessie May doesn’t run a waiting list and donations like this mean they won’t have to. “The work Jessie May does in supporting poorly children and their parents and siblings is invaluable. From providing medical care and respite breaks to vital emotional support and bereavement counselling, this is a remarkably important service for families across the South West, so a big thank you to all at Knickerbockerglory TV for this

generous donation.” Jessie May was set up by the parents of Jessica May Purrington, a little girl who died at home aged four months, surrounded by her family and her nurses. Jessie May has a team of dedicated nurses who provide care to children and families during a child’s life and after their death. It costs around £1,400,000 to provide this care yearly to families in Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Wiltshire. Jonathan Stadlen, managing director of Knickerbockerglory TV, said: “We are thrilled to be able to support such a

worthwhile charity as Jessie May. Knickerbockerglory is an independent production company. When we launched in 2011 we had the aim of making shows we love, sharing our profits and giving to charity. “This year we donated £100,000 to charity, split equally between The Shepherds Bush Families Project which helps homeless families and refugees, Friends of Hammersmith Hospital, Focus 12 which helps adults with addictions, Ellenor Hospice in Gravesend and, of course, Jessie May Children’s Hospice at Home.” www.jessiemay.org.uk

£10,000 National Lottery cash will fund 'Let's Talk Transition' BRISTOL-BASED children’s hospice charity Jessie May has received £10,000 of funding from The Big Lottery Fund, with money raised by National Lottery players. The charity, which provides nursing care at home for terminally ill children and young people, has been awarded the grant for their ‘Let’s Talk Transition’ programme of work. The programme is dedicated to supporting life-limited children who outlive their initial prognosis and need help in the transition period from Jessie May to adult

services, across Bristol,North Somerset, North East Somerset, Wiltshire, Bath and South Gloucestershire. The funding will enable ‘Let’s Talk Transition’ to bring young people together for a number of events where they can connect with each other, share stories, and be part of a supportive community. The programme will also run a number of graduation days to mark the phenomenal achievement of young people transitioning from Jessie May’s care. The National Lottery grant

will also help pay for training on a range of issues around how to support young adults, as well as a number of support visits for families whose children are about to transition to adult care services. These visits could include arranging an introductory visit to day care centres, help with filling out forms, financial advice and signposting to other agencies. Jessie May CEO Chris Roys said: “Thanks to advances in medical technology, more lifelimited children are outliving their initial prognosis and

transitioning to adulthood. Jessie May has seen a marked increase in the number of young people reaching 19, the age of transition, with six young people due to graduate from Jessie May in 2018 and 31 young people on our caseload aged 14-19 who could graduate in the next five years. “This incredible amount of funding means we can support more young people who are approaching the age of transition and ensure these young adults are able to fulfil their full potential, within the limitations of their health.”

Raise money and revamp your wardrobe

THE big Slimming World Clothes Throw has returned and is proving the perfect time for people to start clearing out their wardrobes to make room for lots of lovely new-season clothes.

Slimmers across Bristol, from Bishopston to Westburyon-Trym donated clothes they no longer fit into and, at the same time, raised money for Cancer Research UK. So far more than 200 bags of clothes have been collected from members and even more will be taken to the Cancer Research charity shops during the week Last year £3.3 million was raised by Slimming World members all over the country donating old clothes to Cancer Research UK. It’s hoped that at least £4 million can be raised this year, all helped through contributions from the North Bristol team. Each bag is worth around £25 to Cancer Research UK. And by filling out a Gift Aid form it can boost the value by 25% – to around £30 per bag! It’s the perfect excuse for a wardrobe revamp!

n PETER'S VISION Peter Turner is the lead Optometrist at Turners Opticians

Winning Ways Well it’s been an interesting month in the eye world. The sun’s finally been out on consecutive days which brings joy to so many - particularly us outdoor types. Our big news, it’s official - you can now choose award winning lenses from your local eye and vision care specialists. Yes, our premier all vision lens has only gone and won an award for being well, just amazing. I’ve said this a few times myself, but then I would. To have the quality and design of the lens nationally recognised is, I’ll say it again - amazing! So what’s the fuss about, a lens is just a lens right? Well no not at all actually. Let me tell you about our lens design philosophy. Having

accurately checked your spectacle prescription, we’ll listen to your individual eye and vision needs. We can then craft a pair of lenses that work in harmony with your eyes to deliver on our aim of letting you experience the most natural, comfortable and widest areas of clear vision. On top of this we also personalise the lens to suit your unique eye and vision needs. Sounds good right? Well I’ll let others speak for once. In this case our patients, who have chosen clear natural vision have commented: ‘I can see, they’re brilliant’, ‘they’re really clear’ and ‘thank you, I can see again, clearly’. So whats the catch? Well, as our lenses can be made thin & light, as sunglasses

(polaroid’s also an option naturally) and transitions (so they react & darken in the sun) as well as in ultra tough (so your rimless glasses survive like never before) I’m not sure there is a catch! Of course when you wear an amazing lens design it’s also important you look great and feel amazing! You can now chose a bespoke British designed spectacle frame from our TD collection - available in the finest materials including light and strong Japanese titanium or comfortable & light cotton acetate from Italy. We’ll make the frames to fit you and even discretely engrave your name on the inside for the ultimate personal touch!

I’d best not forget our eye care - after all a key focus of our practices is providing you peace of mind about your eye health and vision. Our extended eye exam is designed for just this; in-depth and thorough eye care for all. We’d love to chat to you about choosing your new spectacles, discuss how we can craft your new spectacle lenses or to just say hello. So what’s stopping you? Come on in! To book an extended eye exam for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointment’s can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Peter Peter Turner is the Lead Optometrist at Turners Opticians in Bristol and also works part time as a Senior Optometrist at the Bristol Eye Hospital.

FAMILY EYE CARE FOR GENERATIONS A visit to Turners Opticians is so much more than just a sight test. Our extended eye exam is more in depth than a regular sight test. Look Great | Feel Amazing You can choose Glasses & Sunglasses including British Designed TD* Glasses, Designer Glasses including Ray-Ban, Oakley, Vanni, Coco Mint & everyday value glasses in our 1/2 price second pair offer.

nB OOK OF THE MONTH WITH HENLEAZE & WESTBURY LIBRARIES The Siege

by Helen Dunmore

THE Siege by Helen Dunmore is a beautifully written but tense account of a small family in Lenningrad forced to fight starvation and to try to survive for 2 ½ years during the German siege of the city from 1941-1944, known today as The 900 day siege during which 600,000 people died.Helen Dunmore's 'The Siege' front cover. 22 year old Anna Levin is a nursery worker who dreams of being an artist and the older sister and mother figure of 5 year old Koyla. Her father Mikhail is a blacklisted writer unwilling to toe the Starlinist line. Marina Petrova, an old flame of Mikhail is also forced

to join the Levins in this journey of survival. The story is narrated mostly in the present tense through the eyes of Anna and pays much attention to the everyday domestic detail as Anna and her family have to forage for food to survive. She watches her brother and father suffer ill health and hunger. A brilliantly written but harrowing story that takes the reader right into the thoughts and emotions of Anna and what comes through most in this story is that hope and love and the triumph of a resilient mind can bind this small family together through all the turmoil of the siege of the city and the most difficult of times.

n INSIDE OUT IT may horrify some readers to know that the 1970s has been hotly tipped to make a comeback this year. Personally I am quite excited as there is really lots to love about the decade that style forgot. With dubious colour combinations that you know you shouldn’t really like but secretly do a bit, curvy graphic wallpapers, macrame plant pot holders, bamboo and rattan, there’s lots of scope for reimagining the style in new ways. My favourite decorative element has to be Terrazzo though. If you are not too sure what I am talking about just check out this delightful pup who has somehow managed to style himself and his bed perfectly on top of this yellow ochre example. Used on floors and sometimes walls, terrazzo is the artful arranging and setting of marble or stone chips into cement, followed by laborious grinding and polishing to create a quality finish. It pre-dates the 1970s by about half a century of course, but when the technique of using resin instead of cement was developed in the 70s, it became easier to produce

and has been associated with the period ever since. Granite, glass, metals and quartz offcuts and chips can all be used, giving it reasonable environmental credentials with this possibility for waste recycling. It is not easy to achieve at home as a DIY project, and bespoke poured terrazzo does not come cheap, but

The event is held at Henleaze Library, Northumbria Drive, BS9 4HP on Thursday June 21 at 7pm, doors open 6.45pm. Tickets cost £5 which includes wine and nibbles, and must be booked by visiting the library prior to the event. We expect this event to be a sell-out and tickets are limited so get one early to avoid disappointment.

n PROPERTY Stoke Bishop £785,000 This is an absolutely fabulous example of a 1930’s semi-detached family home situated in one of the very best positions in Stoke Bishop for both schools, shops and amenities. Kewstoke Road has always been highly sought after, having a sense of village life within a city being close to a community scout hut and a village hall at the end of the road. The property is also deceptively spacious being over 2400 ft including the garage, arranged over three floors and larger than many of the detached homes within close proximity. EPC – D

Green fingers? Wild Place Project is looking for horticulture volunteers PEOPLE who love propagating plants and tending seed beds have a rare chance to become horticultural volunteers at Wild Place Project. They are needed to give help and support to full-time staff at its nurseries where thousands of plants are grown each year. Christina Reade, nursery supervisor, said: “Ideally we would like people to be able to give us one day each week so they can help regularly with members of staff.” She said horticultural volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and from all walks of life. The current horticultural volunteers include retired Jill Colley who has been at the nurseries for the past two years. Jill, who for 30 years worked on the Muppet Show as a production co-ordinator and later as a performer co-ordinator, began volunteering sometime after she moved to Bristol from London. She spends a day a week helping at the nurseries and says she really enjoys it.

AERIAL SPECIALISTS

She said: “People volunteer for many different reasons, some will have retired and are looking for new challenges but anyone is welcome to apply.” People can apply either by ringing volunteer services on 0117 428 5605 or email volunteers@wildplace.org.uk or following this link http://www.wildplace.org.uk/aboutus/volunteers

BUILDING SERVICES

Jill said: “I get involved in coppicing, planting trees, propagating, planting up plants, a wide variety of things. It’s just great. “It’s a fun place, with fun people to work with and every day is different.” Jade Stott, volunteer co-ordinator at Wild Place Project, said anyone interested in becoming a horticultural volunteer should apply through the Wild Place website.
