n ELECTION SPECIAL A GIANT ballot box has been installed at Cabot Circus to remind the citizens of Bristol to vote in the four elections being held on Thursday, 6 May. Elections will take place for the Mayor of Bristol, the Police and Crime Commissioner, West of England Combined Authority Mayor (as known as the Metro Mayor), and 70 local councillors for the 34 wards of Bristol. It’s the first time this number of elections will be held on one day, the second time all 70 councillors will be up for election at once, and the third time a Bristol Mayor is voted for. The elections for the Police and Crime Commissioner, the Mayor of Bristol and local councillors were due to take place last year, but elections across the country were postponed due to Covid-19. The supplementary voting system is used for Mayoral and Police and Crime Commissioner elections. Electors will have two votes – one for your firstchoice candidate and one, if you wish, for your second-choice candidate. The boss of the West of

nB RISTOL MAYOR ELECTIONS Running for re-election this year for Labour is Marvin Rees, who has been his party's candidate in all three polls so far, losing the first to independent George Ferguson before winning in 2016. The Conservatives were third five years ago. This year their candidate is Alastair Watson, a former city councillor, cabinet member and Lord Mayor. The Greens, fourth in 2016, have selected Sandy HoreRuthven, a charity chief executive.

What are the three biggest issues facing the city? Caroline Gooch: Recovery from the pandemic comes first and foremost. My background as a scientist and in business gives me the perfect combination of experiences to lead the city’s recovery, both from a health perspective and economically. The climate crisis requires urgent

Medical science consultant Dr Caroline Gooch is the Liberal Democrats' candidate. Two of the parties – the Tories and Liberal Democrats – say action, and we must play our part in this global challenge. The third is social justice: we must tackle the housing crisis, ensure high-equality education, and prioritise diversity and inclusion to give every individual an equal opportunity to succeed. Sandy Hore-Ruthven: The key challenge is to recover our economy and make sure we don’t suffer high rates of unemployment and an economic slump after the pandemic. My plan for our

economic recovery will create 10,000 new jobs and invest in local businesses. I will prioritise cutting congestion and improving public transport. I will invest £6m annually in our buses, a cycle network for Bristol and better pedestrian routes. Housing continues to be the other main issue, with rents and prices rising. Marvin Rees: Jobs. Post Covid, we will need to build back better with a sustainable, inclusive recovery, as part of the One City Plan.

Homes. After the slowdown of housebuilding from Brexit and Covid, we will accelerate past our targets of 2,000 homes per year including 1,000 affordable, building communities and improving outcomes for all. Transport. We will prioritise public transport and active travel, building a low carbon mass transit system that will transform the way people move around the city. Alastair Watson: More homes and better housing – I will work closely

with the city to deliver the One City Plan including the climate and ecological plans. We’ll keep on facing up to the key challenges and driving the change Bristol needs. Alastair Watson: I will work with businesses to produce a practical plan to assist those badly affected by Covid. Our retail, hospitality and leisure businesses have really suffered over the last 12 months and it is essential the council supports them. Caroline Gooch: I would find specialist school places for the 250 children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) with no specialist school place for September. Every child deserves to have their needs met, so this is a major priority.

Sandy Hore-Ruthven: I will put my economic recovery plan into place. pandemic and austerity. I’ve got Bristol working together. Alastair Watson: I have served as a Bristol city councillor and been Lord Mayor, so I know the whole city and understand how the council works. My background in business means I will make pragmatic decisions, ensuring less waste. Caroline Gooch: As a scientist, with 20 years’ experience in business, I’ve worked with masses of information, the NHS, and budget constraints. 20 years as a rowing cox, rowing umpire, and residential tutor taught me to make difficult decisions and lead teams. Sandy Hore-Ruthven: I have been a CEO for 15 years, growing a small East Bristol Charity to the largest of its kind. We support tens of thousands of young people, employ hundreds of staff and have brought derelict buildings back to life.

Is the balance of power between the Bristol Mayor, councillors, Metro Mayor and government right?

5

Alastair Watson: The Bristol Mayor has too much power and cannot be held to account during their term of office. With the West of England Mayor in place and all-out elections for councillors, there is no need for an elected Bristol Mayor. Caroline Gooch: No. The Bristol Mayor has too much power, rendering the councillors voiceless. The narrower, more strategic remit of the Metro Mayor can benefit our city without us needing the Bristol Mayor. More devolution away from government would empower our communities. Sandy Hore-Ruthven: No, the Mayor needs to be more accountable to the Council and I have plans to change the balance of power. I will have a cross party cabinet, strengthen scrutiny and abide by Council votes on large scale developments. Marvin Rees: No. Government needs to release powers and funds to cities, who are far better placed to work with their communities on 21st century challenges, to enable us to properly plan and work for the city's best interests.

henleaze&westburyvoice n BRISTOL ELECTIONS: WESTBURY-ON-TRYM AND HENLEAZE

May, 2021

Geoff Gollop OBE, Conservative I am a proud Bristolian, living in Henleaze with my wife Bernice for thirty years. We have two adult children. I am a qualified chartered accountant. As Councillor for Westbury since 2001, (Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze since 2015) I have worked alongside local residents in many campaigns including the successful fight against the Labour Council’s plans to close Westbury and Henleaze libraries, opposing their ridiculous A4018 proposals and working to stop abuse of The Downs and Stoke Lodge. I have been Lord Mayor, deputy to the previous elected Mayor and involved in financial Scrutiny. I am angered by the current Mayor squandering money on projects like Bristol Energy – money that could have been spent on adult social care and green open spaces. I am standing for re-election to use my experience to keep fighting threats to our community: traffic and parking issues, ensuring that the building beside St Ursula’s by the council’s own housing

company respects the neighbours and school, and improving the road system in Westbury Village. Community issues affect me as a local resident, just as they affect you. Sharon Scott, Conservative I have always lived in Bristol and moved to Westbury-on-Trym in 2011. I am married with two children who both go to local schools and I work in a primary school within the ward. Prior to working in education, I was in the Finance sector for 20 years where I gained a proven track record of working to deadlines and achieving targets. I have leadership experience, organisational skills and am a qualified trainer. During the pandemic, keyworkers have been the life blood in our community and throughout this time I continued to work in my school and provided daily lessons in the classroom to children of keyworker parents. I have also been involved in supporting children who have gaps in their learning due to the impact of Covid-19.

I am standing as a councillor because I am extremely passionate about children’s education and SEND children. I want to help protect our green spaces and local libraries. If elected on 6th May it would be an honour and privilege to serve all residents in my ward. Steve Smith, Conservative I moved to Westburyon-Trym in 2005 and have lived here since. Our two children were born here and attend local schools. I’ve always volunteered locally; currently I’m an Explorer Scout Leader in Westbury, a volunteer “blood bike” rider and a magistrate. I was elected to Council in 2018 and since then I’ve really enjoyed getting stuck in on local issues. When I was elected Westbury Library was threatened with closure, which we were able to stop. We’ve reversed most of the disastrous plans for the A4018 that came out in early 2019 and helped residents with planning issues such as the awful application to build on top of Grange Court flats in Henleaze last year.

7

I’m standing for re-election because I want to carry on with the work I’ve been doing on the Downs Committee to sort out the issue of vans permanently parked there, and to make sure the Council follows through on promised new road crossings. We are making real progress on these and other issues, and I’d love to carry on as your representative to see them through. Georgia Barnes, Green Party I have decided to run for local councillor as I feel new voices are needed to encourage systemic reflection and improvement. As a community we all know the immense challenges the climate crisis faces us with, and it's the Green Party who are able to build optimistic and genuine opportunities to reflect on and improve our social and local structures. Local government plays a key role in putting the community's hopes for a green future into action. In my role at the Soil Association, I champion a secure and Continued on Page 9

From Page 7 nature centric future while supporting businesses to develop sustainably and consciously and am passionate about making ethical decisions easier and more accessible. As a mother of two I want to build a sustainable community that supports Green development and restores nature for generations to come. The Green party are the only ones consistently and authentically making the climate crisis the key driver in every decision they make . Voting for the Green Party Bristol will provide you with a voice that will champion sensible, sustainable solutions for all our sakes. Robin Coode, Green Party I moved to Bristol in the early eighties living in different parts of the city until settling in Henleaze about 15 years ago. As a keen cyclist I enjoy exploring Bristol and its surroundings by bike and this has helped nurture my interest in the environment to the point where I would like to get more involved with its preservation, with the Green Party being the natural

conduit for this. Given the opportunity I would like to get more involved with any initiatives relating to sustainability and preservation of our natural environment. Alex Dunn, Green Party I am Chair of Sustainable Westburyon-Trym. SusWoT works to improve the local environment. SusWoT’s network of 50 litter pickers clean up all of Westbury and many Henleaze streets monthly. SusWoT grows hundreds of vegetable plants each spring for local people to ‘Get Growing’. I’ve brought together eight local organisations to form ‘Trout in the Trym’ a group aiming to improve the ecology of the Trym catchment area, building on work SusWoT has done cleaning the river. I moved to Bristol in 1975 and have lived in Westbury-onTrym since 1995. Initially, I taught Chemistry and then retrained in IT, becoming Head of IT at Hill House Hammond then BSM. I’m a member of Bristol Civic Society’s

management team, the former President of Bristol Chess and run the Bristol Quiz League, captaining current champions Sheepworrying. I am already working to make sure local concerns are respected when new proposals for the A4018 are developed. If elected, I will do my best to represent all the people of the ward. I believe that we must work together to make Bristol an even better place to live. Simon Crew, Labour I work in the insurance industry and am a UNITE Senior Health and Safety Rep. I put the welfare of my workmates first. And that’s what I aim to do if elected – put the needs of local people first. Miranda McCabe, Labour I know Westbury well as I taught in the Primary School for 26 years, I have a 93 year old mother living in Westbury and a brother living in Henleaze. Through these connections I am aware of

9

local issues and needs. I stood in WOTHen in the last Council elections and am happy to canvass, run street stalls, leaflet and so forth, Covid permitting of course. I am in my fifth year as Chair of Bishopston and Ashley Down. Before the pandemic curtailed our activity I was active in local campaigns and opposition to NHS cuts. At Christmas time we held a street stall inviting people to make donations for the night shelter and food banks. We collected £500-£600 of food and nearly £200 in cash in a single morning. It is vitally important that we get across the message that it is Government cuts that have cash-strapped the Council, causing misery for some of our citizens. I think in the circumstances the Council have found themselves in Bristol they have maintained services remarkably well. Sam Taylor-Elliott, Labour I have lived in Bristol for nearly five years and spent two and a half of those managing our local Labour MP‘s constituency Continued on Page 10

From Page 9 office in Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze ward, giving me a unique insight into residents' views and concerns. I worked closely with Darren Jones MP to ensure residents' views were heard about the A4018, library closures, concerns about local high streets, Stoke Lodge and pavement parking. I organised many constituency events as well as the MP’s visits to local schools, organisations and businesses. After leaving Darren’s team last year, I now work in the NHS and live with my husband and three rescue dogs near Kings Weston Estate. I am a committed environmentalist and passionate advocate of public services including green spaces and libraries. I’m concerned about the impact Tory planning reforms will have on Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze, including the threat of empty retail being turned into HMOs with very little input from residents or the council. I pledge to fight these undemocratic changes every step of the way. Simon Cook MBE, Lib Dem I was born in Norwich and

educated at Norwich School and the University of Sussex. After a brief spell working in business, I trained as an actor at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and spent twenty years working in theatre, film and television. I have been a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Bristol Old Vic and appeared in many television dramas. In 1999, I was elected to Bristol City Council and served as Lord Mayor of Bristol, Deputy Leader, Leader of the Council in 2012 and subsequently Assistant Mayor to the first Elected Mayor. I also served on the Regional Council of Arts Council England. I stood down from the Council in 2016 and was awarded an MBE for services to culture and an honorary doctorate from the University of Bristol. Having had five years away from politics, I find that I now have more time on my hands and am relishing the challenge of contesting a different ward and returning to the Council. I am a widower with two children.

Caroline Gooch, Lib Dem I chose to make Bristol my home five years ago, and am so very glad to be here, in such a friendly and vibrant city. I live in Westbury Park and enjoy running, walking and cycling. I’m very supportive of efforts to improve cycling infrastructure and safer cycling and walking routes, as well as bus routes that work for all, and putting disabled access and healthy environments at the forefront of planning. I have a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, and after training in research moved to industry. I have 20 years’ experience in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, working on clinical trials and with the NHS to support appropriate and informed use of medicines. My transferable skills include data analysis, data interpretation, diplomacy, team management, strategic planning, cross-team working, and problem solving. I want to restore democracy and transparency to our city governance and put power back into the hands of communities. I will listen,

work hard and make a difference. I am also standing in the election for Bristol Mayor. If I am elected, I will put the people of Bristol first. Chris Harris, Lib Dem I was born and bred in Bristol and have been an avid local Liberal Democrat campaigner in Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze since 2018. I previously served as a borough councillor in Reading where I had a particular interest in housing and children’s services and I chaired the parenting panel. I am passionate about mental health issues, especially concerning children and young adults and those suffering from hidden disabilities. My working background has been in Housing needs and homelessness in Bristol and Berkshire within the local authority and social housing sector. I am keen that Westbury-onTrym and Henleaze continue to maintain their green and open spaces, with green and sustainable transport links to other parts of the city and to the city’s hospitals.

VOTERS in Bristol are among those who will vote for the next West of England Mayor on May 6. The boss of the West of England Combined Authority, or WECA, is in charge of coordinating the region’s transport, housing jobs and skills policy, securing government funding and overseeing the spending of more than £1.1 billion over the next 30 years. Current Metro Mayor Tim

Bowles, a Conservative, is standing down from the position, which he has held since 2017. Everyone is given a first and second choice vote. If no one receives more than half of the votes when the votes are first counted, the two candidates with the least votes are knocked out. Any second choice votes from their ballot papers are added to the remaining candidates' total to find

a winner. The Voice has asked each candidate in the election to send us a 100-word manifesto explaining their priorities, plus a short biography to tell readers more about themselves. They are printed here in alphabetical order, as they will appear on ballot papers. Dan Norris, Labour Local. Experienced. Active. Dan’s been an NSPCC-trained child protection officer, a local MP, Environment Minister and run his own businesses. I’ll be a jobs first Metro Mayor and get people back to work launching my Green Recovery Plan to create 23,000 new jobs. I want to rejuvenate our high streets, double investment in affordable homes,

I’ve identified £1bn of existing regional funds for local investment in green jobs and growth industries, including support for small businesses. I’ll subsidise rural bus routes and lower fares for young people and I’ll give a greater voice to communities in regional decision-making. Samuel Williams, Conservative Samuel is a Business founder and charity leader who has worked domestically and internationally to lead social and economic change. The West of England Mayor is a big job that decides how hundreds of

millions of pounds are invested across the region. This is time to take hold of opportunity and secure our recovery by: Implementing a modern transport system that works – delivering at least six new stations, crucial rail improvements, ‘on-demand’ services, and cycling and walking services; Deliver improved skills training for high value and sustainable jobs of the future; Boosting local enterprise, increasing employment and attracting greater investment; Unblocking the redevelopment logjam and pioneering more sustainable future communities.

Worked as a business troubleshooter and is a Bristol University history graduate. I will be a strong champion for the West of England, using my experience in business, as an MP and government minister to get our voice heard loudly in London, winning new investment and powers. I will also: Lead a green and socially just economic recovery;

Take control of our buses and run them on clean fuel; Build thousands of new homes to suit all budgets, built to the highest green standards; Demand a range of new powers from government, making more big decisions locally. We can’t afford another inexperienced Conservative mayor. Put my experience to work for you!

Stephen Williams, Liberal Democrat Former Bristol West MP and Minister for Communities.

Most of us, including PM, can't name current Metro Mayor WHOEVER becomes the next Metro Mayor following the election will first need to ensure voters know who they are. Independent political think-tank Centre for Cities found that just 7% of people polled in the West of England area, which includes Bristol and B&NES as well as South Gloucestershire, could name current mayor Tim Bowles. In fact, more people (10%) incorrectly thought that Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees was the metro mayor than knew Mr Bowles was the incumbent. They were not alone: the Prime Minister Boris Johnson, asked on a visit to Gloucestershire last month if he could name the current Metro Mayor, was unable to say it was Tim Bowles.

Westbury Wheelies take on Tour de Bristol COLLEAGUES at Westbury-onTrym GP surgery are taking part in the Tour de Bristol bike ride on 26 June to raise money for St Peter's Hospice. The ride was inspired by the news that St Peter's Hospice has a £2 million plus deficit due to the cancellation of major fundraising events and the temporary closure of the charity's shops. As a result St Peter’s have had to close five of their 15 inpatient hospice beds. Dr Kate Jenkins says: “Seventeen staff are taking part including our pharmacist, nurses, GPs and administration staff. We are trying to go together as one big group so that it’s a real team bonding event. “Everyone is tired after the last year and we all need something that’s fun to do, boost morale and bring people together again. Physically, we’ve been separated into two floors at work due to restrictions and

social distancing. It’s come at a good time to serve as a bit of a distraction, to boost morale and bring some positivity to the staff who have been brilliant with rolling out vaccines and coping with the ever changing situation this last year has brought.” The Tour de Bristol route takes cyclists on a ride through the countryside of South Gloucestershire. There are three levels of difficulty, 40km, 65km and 100km, and because of the

novices in the group who haven’t tackled a bike ride in years the Westbury Wheelies are cycling the 40km distance. “There is a huge variety of levels of those taking part,” says Kate. “One partner has cycled part of the Tour de France route whereas some of our riders haven't been on a bike for over 10 years, so training will be a challenge." The Westbury Wheelies

have set a Just Giving target of £1,000 (of which £900 is already raised). The group is keen to raise as much money as possible to help St Peter’s Hospice. Their entrance fees are being matched by the Partners at the surgery and donated to St Peter's, and they hope to gain support from local businesses too. Kate says: “St Peter's is the only hospice serving the whole of Bristol, and it provides a huge support to our patients and local community. We were so shocked to hear how they were struggling to fund their in-patient beds. This is a completely dire situation, when this year with the pandemic, the demand for their services has been at its greatest. “It’s spurred us on to get a team together to raise some much needed funds for this hugely worthy cause." Wildlife park ready to opens its gates WESTBURY Wildlife Park will reopen its gates to the public this month for the first time in two decades. The site was closed in the 1990s due to new animal regulations and has remained closed ever since. Board trustees Kira Emslie and her partner Jonathan Ashby have led the regeneration project, turning it into an asset for the local community once more. Kira says: “It feels amazing to get to this point and we couldn’t have done it without the help of all the volunteers who kept going throughout a hard winter. “We’ve all dedicated a lot of volunteer hours over this year-long process, especially to get the old educational building up to this point. “It is a unique space in Bristol. The site has been rewilded and we will continue to encourage biodiversity, adding plants as we develop it.” UWE wildlife conservation students from Bristol Zoo have turned up daily with their welly boots and shovels, getting stuck into the physical work needed to make the site safe for visitors. More than 250 volunteers signed up to help with the project and have worked in ‘safety bubbles’ following Covid regulations. Two opening weekends are planned

- Thursday 6 May to Sunday 9 May and Thursday 13 May to Sunday 16 May. The site will be open from 10am - 6pm, and visitors will discover a water area with two ponds, ducks swimming the stream, picnic spots with benches and tables. They may see some of the visiting birds, such as yellow and grey wagtails, mallards, robins and tits as well as various insects and wildlife. In the interest of preserving the wildlife on site and understanding the interest and flow of the people this will be run as a series of ticketed days. Tickets are free and have no age restrictions but entry will be in line with park rules, including no dogs, alcohol or antisocial

behaviour allowed. The park can be found in Westbury-on-Trym, at the lower end of Trym Road near the Old Barn at Trymwood. The organisers will be running wildlife workshops and competitions for kids over the opening weekends, and there will be an onsite coffee wagon for refreshments. Kira and Jonathan describe the park as “still a work in progress” but they are keen to open and show people what’s been happening on site this last year and celebrate the hard work that volunteers have put into the wildlife park. Consultation on Claremont School development plans

New owner for Eastfield Inn THE Eastfield Inn on Henleaze Road has a new owner. It’s been taken over by James Savage, becoming part of his award-winning pub company which also owns The Westbury Park in Henleaze, The Alma in Clifton, The Knowle and The Greenbank. The 1930s pub has a large beer garden and is a popular community pub, used by local groups. His team is refurbishing the pub and improving the garden, constructing an outside bar, building a new playspace and adding outside booths. Having reported last month that the pub 'will not be reopening in the near future' the good news is that the pub will reopen for business later this summer.

LOCAL people are urged to respond to a consultation on the redevelopment and construction of a new teaching block and hydrotherapy pool at Claremont School, Henleaze. Bristol City Council and the Bristol Local Education Partnership, Stride Treglown and Skanska are working on the proposals for the extensive refurbishment of Claremont House, the demolition of selected buildings and creation of a new teaching block and hydrotherapy pool. This work will enable the school to increase its offer of specialist provision for children and young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and improve the suitability and condition of buildings. The aim is for the new and refurbished buildings to provide high quality learning environments for vulnerable children and young adults, designed specifically to meet SEND & PMLD teaching needs, including much improved facilities for mobility, environmental control, welfare and hydrotherapy facilities. The purpose of the consultation is to inform the local community of the proposals and to give residents and businesses the chance to see the plans and provide feedback. The opportunity to provide feedback is primarily via the link to an online questionnaire, although an email address has been provided to enable anyone with specific question @stridetreglown.com. The consultation is open from Monday 26 April to Sunday 16 May 2021, after which the website will remain live for information purposes only. The consultation website where all the information and a link to the questionnaire can be found is: https:// claremontconsultation.co.uk/

Redland Green benefits from tech gifts SUPPORT from businesses and the community has helped school children stay connected during and after the Covid-19 emergency. Gatehouse Green Learning Trust was overwhelmed by the response to an appeal for devices to aid students over the winter. Help came from people and firms linked to parents, governors and trustees – and also from organisations that had no prior connection to the trust and its five Bristol schools. A particularly generous donation was made by law firm Burges Salmon, which handed over 15 laptops that were given out to students learning at home during the lockdowns. Burges Salmon also gave the trust 50 desktop computers, which have been shared between Ashton Park School and Redland Green School. The trust’s head of IT Dan Pitman said: “We have installed

Dan Pitman with some of the donated computers 25 PCs at Ashton Park and 25 at Redland Green to replace ageing equipment in some of our IT suites. “This support has been extremely welcome at a time when we are striving to ensure that our young people are given every opportunity to succeed after a period of disrupted learning. “As businesses reconsider

their arrangements after the pandemic, with many employees opting to continue remote working using laptops and other devices, we hope they will consider donating any surplus computers to their local schools.” Sarah Baker, chief executive of GGLT, said: “We are very grateful to Burges Salmon for the donation of 15 laptops and 50 desktop PCs. This generous

donation is making a difference to the lives of our students, who have shown great resilience over the past year and deserve every investment in their futures. “Our schools are rooted in their communities and we value highly the links we are developing with local employers and organisations. We welcome any partnerships that can benefit the young people we serve.” Kirsty Green-Mann, head of corporate responsibility at Burges Salmon LLP, said: “We’re pleased to have been able to make this equipment donation to help students stay connected, as part of our Burges Salmon ‘Working with Schools’ programme. Digital inclusion and helping less advantaged students keep pace has never been so important given the challenges presented by the pandemic. Our thanks go to the Gatehouse Green Learning Trust.”

Primary school places allocated for September

Striving to be the best we can,

FAMILIES across Bristol have received offers of primary school places for September 2021. This year an overwhelming majority of families in Bristol are being offered one of their top three choices. Applications were slightly lower this year (5,121) compared to 2020 (5,497). All families who applied for a reception school place have been allocated one. The number of families being offered their first preference school stood at 89% (4,544), an increase from 87.5% (4,624) in 2020. Those who were not offered one of their preferred schools decreased slightly to 2% (86 compared to 129 in 2020 and 104 in 2019). Alison Hurley, director for education and skills said: “I am really pleased that this year we can again offer the majority of parents their first preference for a primary school reception place. “If parents have concerns with the offer they have received, I’d encourage them to get in touch with our school admissions team, via email if possible, to discuss their options.” Families who applied online received an email on April 16 with their offer. Families are advised to check their spam folders for this email. Families who applied by post were being sent a letter. Offers have to be accepted by April 30. Waiting lists become available from 10 May and a second-round allocation, where any places that may become available will be reallocated, will take place in early June. The best and quickest way to contact Bristol City Council’s school admissions team is via email: school.admissions@bristol.gov.uk. Look forward to every day at Trymview Hall At Care UK’s Trymview Hall care home in Southmead, the creative and encouraging atmosphere enables residents to rediscover true quality of life, with some amazing outcomes.

When Toni first moved to Trymview Hall, she was readjusting to life after a stroke. The team gently encouraged her. Toni is now thriving. During October’s Big Draw Festival, Toni rekindled her love of drawing and painting, making a selection of artworks for display around the home. The site was purchased by Redmaids’ High School in 2017 for student use, with a continued emphasis on community access. The school has recently appointed Verde Recreo, a local firm of specialists in sports design and construction, who, along with award-winning architects, O’Leary Goss, are working hard to realise the school’s vision for the sports site. In December 2019 Tom’s father Oliver was diagnosed with a rare form of dementia,

This was then doubled by an anonymous donor and we set ourselves a new goal of raising £30,000 to help The National Brain Appeal’s

Ed Speelers and Tom Morison prepare for their 200km charity challenge

Passing on wealth between generations In many families there are four generations alive at the same time. Family wealth is often not split evenly. The generations who are in most need of the wealth currently sit at either end of the spectrum. They are: • Millennials trying to get on the property ladder. • The older generation, living longer, but with deteriorating health and without any long-term care provision. The traditional way of passing on wealth after death does not serve the financial needs of today’s families very well. That’s the backdrop to intergenerational wealth planning and it may be a situation that you recognise in your own family. As you get older it becomes just as important to protect the wealth you’ve built up as it is to make more. People over 55 years old may wish to use their wealth collaboratively with their families during their lifetime, when their children and grandchildren will need it most. Whether you are considering financing private education,

paying university fees or helping with a first home deposit, a financial adviser could help you achieve this in the most tax efficient way. The Coronavirus pandemic is causing many people to re-think their financial planning, and you may be one of them. It is expected that the younger generation will be most adversely affected by what has happened this past year. You can choose to use your wealth to do something to help. You may want to act soon to ‘lock in’ existing reliefs and tax rates. Focus is shifting on how to pay back the £ billions that has been borrowed. The Chancellor is likely to identify family wealth as one area that is ripe for reform. WHILE most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

it may be possible to take advantage of this tax break. If the beneficiaries of the estate agree, it is possible to effectively amend the terms of a Will within two years of the date of death. A ‘Deed of Variation’ can be drawn up which sets out the family members’ agreed arrangements

Deputy head appointed at Redmaids' High Juniors

Director of finance and operations for Badminton BADMINTON School has appointed Mr Michael Waymouth as its director of finance and operations, effective from 1 July 2021. Mr Waymouth joins Badminton after a long and distinguished army career and brings a truly international perspective, having served in 40 countries to date, most recently as the Commander of British Forces in Ukraine. Pursuing a long-held ambition to support the delivery of education, he has been fortunate to have spent most of the last decade in relevant appointments, including Deputy Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and as a Director within the United Kingdom Defence Academy. Commenting on his appointment, Mr Waymouth said: “I could not be more delighted to be joining the team at Badminton. The school has a fantastic reputation that spreads right across the UK. Happily it sits in my favourite city too, but more importantly it is poised on the brink of further innovation and evolution that I am now privileged to be a part of. I am determined to give of my very best in supporting our pupils, their families and the School.” Mrs Tear, head of Badminton School said: “We are delighted to have Mr Waymouth joining us at an exciting time for Badminton with record pupil numbers expected in September and a range of strategic and development initiatives to drive forward. I’m sure he will quickly establish himself as a key member of the executive leadership team working with both governors and staff to execute our plans.”

CHRISTOPHER Haynes has been appointed to the role of Redmaids’ High Junior School deputy head with effect from September 2021. Mr Haynes joins the school from Oliver House School in London, where he has held the position of deputy head for the last five years. Having studied mathematics at university, Mr Haynes started his career in finance, but changed direction having volunteered at a summer camp for disadvantaged children. His professional interests include mathematical pedagogy, leadership and school improvement and he is currently studying parttime for a master’s degree in educational leadership at Cambridge University. Outside of work he enjoys travel, scuba diving, running, cycling and country walking. “I am delighted to be moving to Bristol to take up this position,” said Mr Haynes. “I am passionate about education and look forward to playing my part in seeing every pupil at Redmaids’ High Junior School thrive.” Speaking of this appointment, Lisa Brown, headteacher at Redmaids’ High Juniorsm said: “Christopher has a wealth of experience of working closely with pupils and parents to provide academic excellence and outstanding pastoral support, which makes him an excellent fit for our school.” Mr Haynes will be replacing Maggie Edbrooke who is retiring after 35 years at the school.

Bid for 65 homes on zoo's west car park

“When it comes to eyewear, why compromise? Style and comfort come as a pair.”

BRISTOL Zoo has submitted a planning application for residential development of Bristol Zoo Gardens West Car Park, on College Road in Clifton. The sale of the site will provide a vital contribution to the funds required to deliver the new Bristol Zoo which will be relocated to their Wild Place Project site near Cribbs Causeway. The zoo has developed plans for the West Car Park that they believe respond sensitively to the setting and context of the site. The intention is a high-quality, sustainable scheme, making use of materials that are sympathetic to the surrounding environment. The design consists of 65 high-quality new homes

in a mix of 1, 2 and 3-bed apartments and 4-bed mews houses, of which 20% will be affordable housing. Building heights range from 4.5 storeys along College Road, to 2.5 storeys within the site, in response to the surrounding context. Informal, mews-style homes will be located on the westernmost part of the site that borders neighbouring properties. A larger, more formal, apartment block will front on to College Road, creating an attractive frontage. The planning application was submitted in early April Ref: 21/01999/F and full details are now on the Bristol City Council ‘Planning Online’ website.

n HOME CARE & FUNDING

Tom Jackson, Commercial Lead

Is now the time to replace your windows?

T

HE arrival of spring and easing of COVID restrictions gives us all some much needed optimism after a long winter in lockdown. Spring signals a fresh approach and for many, this means preparing for the annual spring clean. With that in mind, now is the perfect opportunity to consider making your home more energy efficient. If you have single glazed windows or aluminum framed windows, your home may be letting in draughts and cold air. Making your windows more energy efficient will not only keep your home well insulated but also help you to reduce your energy bills. According to the Energy Saving Trust, by installing double glazing to windows in an entirely single-glazed property, you could make annual savings of between £50 and £120 depending on your property. With home improvement season well underway, a loan funded by Bristol City Council could be the solution to funding your home repairs. Lendology CIC, a not-forprofit lender, works in partnership with the Council to lend funds to

eligible homeowners. As an additional incentive, Bristol City Council is currently offering successful applicants up to £1,000 towards the cost of works*. In addition, local not-for-profit home improvement agency, We Care Home Improvements, are at hand to support you with managing the project and provide the expertise to guide you through finding contractors and the works required to your home. Mr. H desperately needed to replace his old windows and was unlikely to carry out the works without the support of a low-cost, council-funded loan delivered by Lendology. He has now installed new double-glazed windows and

told us that he feels warmer in his home. With an increased sense of wellbeing, he said “I feel very pleased and proud of our home again.” Mr. H said his experience with Lendology was all positive and his advice to other homeowners considering a home improvement loan with Lendology is “definitely apply!” For an informal chat about the loan scheme and eligibility, call Lendology on 01823 461099, email loans@lendology.org.uk or visit. www.lendology.org.uk For more information on the services provided by We Care Home Improvements, call 0300 323 0700 or visit. www.wecr.org.uk *Subject to eligibility. **A maximum reduction of £1,000 from an approved loan over £2,000. Henleaze Library open for browsing FOUR Bristol libraries have expanded their services to include browsing. Henleaze, Henbury, Stockwood and the Central Library all welcomed back customers from 12 April, with Bishopston, Marksbury Road and Fishponds staying open for the Call and Collect service. From Monday 19 April a total of 17 libraries will be open – with seven offering browsing and limited computer use, and 10 offering Call and Collect. Kate Murray, Head of Libraries, said: “We are really pleased to be able to start safely re-opening and expanding our services and we are looking forward to welcoming people back. “Library staff have taken

on critical roles during the pandemic response, and they are now finishing off these jobs before coming back to the library service so that we can start to open more libraries around the city. “We know how much our libraries mean to their local communities, and we are doing everything we can to reopen our libraries in a safe and responsible manner. “We will also be looking to carry on with our excellent digital offering as we start to reopen our buildings.” Libraries may look a little different when they reopen, as measures have been put in place to keep staff and customers safe. All toilets will remain closed. Staff and members of the

FINANCE With Richard Higgs BA (hons) CFP FPFS Harold Stephens 50 High Street, Westbury on Trym, Bristol BS9 3DZ T: 0117 3636212 E: office@haroldstephens.co.uk THE much anticipated Spring Budget revealed that there would be no changes to personal taxation rates which sounds positive at first glance. However, many of the allowances, thresholds and exemptions have been frozen for a number of years. So is this a tax rise in disguise? The inheritance tax nil rate band was last increased from £312,000 to £325,000 on 6 April 2009. It had been due to be frozen until 5 April 2021 and then increase in line with CPI. However, with the announcement that it would stay at that level until at least 5 April 2026 - that’s a total of 17 years! The ‘freeze’ in the nil rate band has seen more and more individuals being brought into the inheritance tax net. Whilst the rate of inheritance tax has remained at 40%, it is inevitable that any future increase in asset values could result

Spring Budget and Inheritance Tax in a significant increase in tax for many people. The introduction of the residence nil rate band (RNRB), from 2017/18, has slowed inheritance tax receipts’ growth and reduced the number of estates liable to inheritance tax. However, consider an example of an individual who had assets worth £400,000 in 2009 and assume the value increases by 5% per annum over the 17-year period to 2026. Even after accounting for the RNRB, their inheritance tax bill increases significantly as a consequence of fairly modest compound asset growth against a frozen nil rate band over 17 years. This emphasises the importance of planning and

considering the impact of the frozen band on your estate. It is likely that even if you previously did not have a liability, you will need to undertake some planning, which could include gifting, using business reliefs or creating trusts. Please call 0117 363 6212 or email richard@haroldstephens. co.uk or contact us through the website www.haroldstephens.

Westbury Village Hall reopens THE Westbury Village Hall’s doors are open again after being closed for the majority of the past year, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The AGM which would normally have been in October was cancelled last year and will now be held on Tuesday 29 June at 7pm (drinks and nibbles will be provided). Village Hall chairperson, Graham Plummer, says: “All are welcome so please come along and have a glass of wine with light refreshments and see the improvements that have been made to the hall during the lockdown. “We took this opportunity to not only decorate where necessary but also install a new floor on the stage and in the committee room, together with a total refurbishment to the floors of the main hall and entrance. This is in addition to a recent new bar and leaded windows which will now make the hall an even more attractive venue to hire. “We hope to have events later in the year but please put a note in your diaries that the ever popular Westbury Village Show will be held here at the hall on September 4. We look forward to seeing you soon.” To find out more see: www.wotvillagehall.org or email enquiries@ wotvillagehall.org

n ADVERTISING FEATURE Mel Randhawa writes: THIS past year has been extremely challenging for mental and physical health and fitness. Many people started out with great intentions for daily exercise , but there are a lot of people who have spent more time in the home than ever before and just maybe, have eaten more and become more sedentary. When the pandemic started I realised that I would not be able to use my gym and I wasn’t sure when they would reopen and if I would want to go back. At this point the idea came to create my own fitness studio and train to be a Personal Trainer! It is something that I have always wanted to do and the lockdown provided me with the opportunity to pursue my dreams. It was fantastic to have both projects to focus on - the creation of the new studio and my studies. When it was possible to do so, I trained friends and family - many of whom have now become longstanding clients. As well as gaining my Level 3 Personal Trainer certificate, I completed my Level 3 GP Exercise

Local mumlaunchesPTbusiness andnewfitnessstudiofor BS9 Referral qualification which means I will be able to work with clients with conditions such as hypertension and diabetes to help manage and reduce their symptoms. I am now continuing on to do my Level 4 qualification and have chosen to specialise in back pain. More people working from home, no longer using correctly positioned office chairs, has led to a significant rise in lower back issues. As lockdown comes to an end people are thinking about how they can improve their health and fitness. For those who don’t feel comfortable going into a gym environment, my Personal Trainer 1-1 service offers a great option to train in a safe environment either at my fitness studio, on Clifton Downs or at a venue of your choice. As a 46 year old mum of two, I am very aware of the fitness

needs of my age group, and am committed to designing customised programmes to help build motivation and achieve fitness goals. I am really looking forward to meeting more people from our community and helping them to get fit and active postlockdown, in the meantime here are some tips to give your fitness a boost: Outdoor exercise is vital - a walk counts! Walking is one of my favourite forms of exercise and it can be sociable. Find something you enjoy you have to enjoy your exercise activities - then it becomes an enjoyable part of your weekly routine Focus on your health holistically - listen to your body and respond to what it needs. Some days that might just be a good stretch or rest.

n NEWS

July decision for Henleaze Christmas Festival WITH the total lifting of all lockdown restrictions still an open question, the return of the Henleaze Christmas Festival this year is in the balance. A decision will be made in late summer – probably towards the end of July – when it is hoped that the final stage of the government road map will bring an end to social distancing. The government has commissioned a review of the effect of large-scale events such as the Christmas Festival. The report, which will look into when it will be safe to stage large events, will be delivered by June 17 when a decision is likely to be taken. Festival co-ordinator Austin Ferrante says: “Obviously we cannot countenance running the festival, which attracts hundreds of people, if there is still any form of social distancing. “We are very keen to do it and want to support our local shops as well as giving the community a chance to enjoy all the fun of the festival once again. But, unless the rules on social distancing are removed it would be

impossible.” There will also be issues around entertainment, especially in the Bradbury Hall, where large crowds congregate and choirs perform. Under current restrictions that would not be allowed. In the meantime, tentative steps will be taken to launch the festival if it proves safe to do so. Traders can make provisional bookings for stalls and applications will be made for the necessary licences – although the city licensing authorities are themselves still awaiting clarification on what is possible. “We hope very much that there will be a festival. But it depends so much on efforts to control the pandemic and on whether there is another spike in cases this winter,” says Austin Ferrante. If there is a festival it is likely to be, once again, in early December – probably Wednesday, December 8 - although that will have to be confirmed.

Senior Film Club resumes after an interval BRINGING joy to people and encouraging them to carry on living life to the full is the reason John Moore of Home Instead set up a Senior Film Club. The monthly meet-up for a film screening plus tea and cake was a regular fixture in Henleaze

and Downend before the pandemic and John can’t wait to get it going again. “It’s for anyone who wants to come along, catch up with old friends, meet new friends or just sit quietly at the back,” says John.

A pre-Covid meeting of the Senior Film Club

“We see the Senior Film Club as so important. It’s a way for people to regain some of their confidence, getting out there and meeting people again. “I’m really looking forward to getting people together to have fun. It’s always been such a highlight to see people leaving the event with a smile on their face. We’ve seen the impact of the aging process on people as they are missing out on the stimulation of company so now that we can, we’re bringing back the Senior Film Club and hope it gives people a boost.” May’s film is The Greatest Showman. It’s a lighthearted film that celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. The event takes place at St Peter’s Hall in Henleaze on May 24, costs £4 and includes tea and cake. Doors open at 1.30pm, film

First on the bill: The Greatest Showman begins at 2pm. The film for June's event will be Fisherman’s Friends. Pre-booking is essential as numbers are limited due to Covid measures. To book please call 0117 435 0063.

City's nature challenge

THE international City Nature Challenge is taking place on Friday 30 April to Monday 3 May. Bristol is one of the cities taking part and anyone can join in and make a contribution as a citizen scientist. Simply download the iNaturalist app to your smartphone or tablet and use it to upload photos of any wildlife in Bishopston,

Cotham and Redland that you see from your windows, gardens and during your daily outdoor exercise. You don’t have to be an expert, as the app will give you some handy suggestions of what it thinks you’ve seen, and you can join the iNaturalist online community to learn more about the wildlife around you. Best of all, the records you submit will

help inform local and national conservation work. City Nature Challenge is an epic, global citizen science project to collect information about our local wildlife. In 2021 UK cities are collaborating with 400+ cities across the world to find and record as much wildlife as possible to help track how nature is bouncing back this spring.

n SPORT HISTORY will be made this summer as, for the first time in the 132-year history of the venue, the Bristol County Ground will play host to an England Women’s Test Match. The England Women v India Women fixture has been announced as one of three international women’s fixtures being played in Bristol this season, with One Day Internationals also featuring, against India and New Zealand respectively. England Women’s international schedule at Bristol is as follows: • Wednesday 16-19 June – LV= Insurance Test Match – England v India • Sunday 27 June - Royal London International - England v India • Thursday 16 September – Royal London One-Day International – England v New Zealand The Priority Windows for England Women 2021 ticket sales opened to 2021 Gloucestershire Cricket Members and Previous International Ticket Buyers from 19 April.

39

Bristol to host three England Women international matches

Tickets were going on general sale from Wednesday 28 April. The England Women’s Test Match against India promises to be a mouth-watering fixture, as India Women boast an excellent squad, including former Western Storm player Smriti Mandhana. The One-Day International in Bristol will be a must-watch as many England fans will remember the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Final between the two sides at Lord’s in 2017 in the ICC Women’s World Cup as England secured a famous

nine-run victory with Western Storm’s Anya Shrubsole the star of the final. The International fixtures at the Bristol County Ground provides another chance to see two of England’s greatest women cricketers, and local heroes, Heather Knight and Anya Shrubsole, in action at their regular Western Storm home. New Zealand Women last played at the Bristol County Ground in 2018 as part of a T20 Tri-Series that also featured South Africa. England defeated New Zealand by seven wickets with Sarah Taylor top scoring with an impressive 51 runs. This match is also the series opening match between the two sides. Will Brown, Gloucestershire Cricket chief executive, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming England Women to the Bristol County Ground for three matches this summer. We

have a really good track record in attracting large crowds for England Women’s matches here, and we know that supporters will look forward to what promises to be some excellent cricket in Bristol this year. “It will be an historic moment for us to be able to host a first-ever Test Match at our ground. In a year where we are celebrating a belated 150th anniversary for the club, it is fitting that we will be adding another milestone moment to add to a distinguished list. We know that Heather Knight and her team have a good record and enjoy playing in Bristol, so it will be fantastic to see how they go against both India and New Zealand.” You can register your interest for these matches at: www. gloscricket.co.uk/englandwomen-international-matchesregister-your-interest/

n HOME IMPROVEMENT

Tom Jackson, Commercial Lead

Saving water in the bathroom – don’t put your money down the drain WITH so many of us struggling with our household bills, one of the easiest to keep under control is your water bill. If you’re on a water meter, being aware of your water consumption is very important. Saving water isn’t only good for your wallet though - it’s great for the environment and our local community. It’s up to us all to play our part and save water where we can, just using the amount we actually need. Over half of the average water use comes in the bathroom, with around a third coming from taking showers and baths. We all know that showers use less water than baths. However, the average shower still uses around 10 to 11 litres per minute. If the average family cut shower time by a minute, they could save £45 on their water bills and over 11,500 litres of water per year in total. Why not try putting a time limit on your shower? You can do this by simply setting a timer on your phone, or by fitting a new smart shower with time limit functionality built into it.

Drips and leaks can also cost you money and waste massive amounts of water in the long run, if you don’t get them fixed. A leaking toilet or constantly filling cistern can waste 400 litres of water every day. Not only is it a terrible waste, it could also cost someone on a water meter over £300 a year. A single dripping tap can waste over 60 litres per day – that’s the same as 39 bathtubs full of water. It’s never too late to get it sorted, and our handyperson team is equipped to take care of replacing washers, broken seals and even

whole taps. Nowadays there are many products available which actively help you save water, from dual flush toilets to showers and taps with flow limiters A dual flush allows you to choose a short flush or a longer flush depending on what is needed to clear the waste away. We often don’t realise how much water is being used at a higher pressure, so switching to a lower pressure can help a lot. Innovative water-saving aerated shower heads mix air with the water flow. This uses up to 30% less

Live In Care

water without losing any of the power of your shower. Built-in flow limiters reduce the amount of water you use by automatically limiting flow or by giving the option to switch to eco mode. Smart shower systems allow you to customise your showering experience and set your shower to run for a specified length of time. Then there’s new cuttingedge underfloor heating. You can control when and how you use your heating, which is much more efficient than central heating. Smart digital thermostats even learn the best times and temperatures for your heating, making the whole thing effortless. Contact our friendly team today to discuss how we can create a modern eco-friendly shower room that’s built around you - but won’t cost the earth. 0300 323 0700 info@wecr.org.uk www.wecr.org.uk
