Hospice faces £2m funds gap

Link brings so much to celebrate PUPILS from Westbury-on-Trym C of E Academy and Bristol Free School having raised more than £10,000 for their link school in Nepal. They held a combination of sponsored events, a curry and quiz night and corporate sponsorship to fund a new kitchen and dining room for the Shree Himalaya School in Singdi, 4,500 miles from home.

The first stone was laid last year by pupils at Bristol Free School and the building is now complete. Children and adults from Westbury have made regular visits to Nepal since the link was established 21 years ago. Report: Page 29

Westbury Wildlife again - with help THE trustees of Westbury Wildlife Park Foundation are keen to reopen this forgotten landmark in Westbury-on-Trym after many years of closure and neglect and transform it into a safe place of learning, activity and creativity for the local community. With the help and financial support of local people, the trustees believe it’s possible to reopen the park by next summer. There’s certainly a swell of local enthusiasm as a magnificent £900 was raised in the first 24 hours of launching a Go Fund Me page. This sum will make it possible for the group to cover the cost of insurance to have volunteers working on the site. Their next goal is to raise enough money for tools and PPE for everyone who has signed up to volunteer. A mixture of new and old trustees and volunteers who have worked closely in the past on big projects have turned their skills to opening this space which can be found at the very end of Trym Road, with an entrance on the other side of the river by the small car park. Speaking on behalf of the trustees Kira Emslie says: “Our mission is to turn the park into a community space to help preserve and protect local flora and fauna. A centre to educate and create. A therapeutic natural environment and a place to feel safe. “The situation with Covid-19 means that having access to safe outdoor spaces is more important than ever. After many years of closure and neglect, we are excited to announce that we intend to reopen Westbury Wildlife Park and are dedicated to turning it into an asset to the community once again. “We have in place a group of dedicated trustees and volunteers who are working hard towards restoring and reopening the park to the public. Many of our team were and are facing a changing work life, and many of us now have and will continue to have the time and energy to give to the park to make this happen.”

The trustees want as many people as possible to benefit from the park which will be family and community oriented. A carefully considered management plan will be implemented in stages. Some of the Phase 1 projects which need completion before the Wildlife Park can reopen are the reinstatement of the old wildlife ponds, building wildlife surveys and creating a woodland and grassland management plan, building a forest play area for children and setting up picnic tables and river clearance and maintenance, increasing biodiversity through careful planting schemes. An open day is planned for all contributors before the end of the year to show all the progress that has already been made over the past six months. Kira added: “It’s been an incredible journey so far and now we need your help to continue.” To find out more about Westbury Wildlife Park Foundation and their plans, or to volunteer see: www.wwpf.uk/

Last chance for a say over extra storeys on flats block THE planning application to build two extra storeys on top of an existing three storey block of flats in Grange Court Road is likely to be decided by a committee of councillors. Councillor Steve Smith writes in his column this month: “We are still waiting for confirmation but as I write it seems likely that the Council’s planning department is not going to reject this awful proposal. “If you agree with us that it shouldn’t go ahead, you can help by sending in a “Public Forum” statement to the meeting. Even if you have already responded to the planning application it is important that you comment again for this meeting.” As reported in the Henleaze and Westbury Voice last month, the site owner of Grange Court flats, ERE LLP, is seeking confirmation whether prior approval is required for a proposed development of a two storey upward extension of the existing building on Grange Court Road, which will add 14 new three-bed dwellings onto the detached block of 21 two-bed flats, making it by far the highest building in the area. New regulations came into effect at the beginning of August which introduced permitted development rights allowing construction on existing blocks of flats. This development is one of the first proposals to be made under the legislation. Councillor columns: Page 39

n NEWS WESTBURY Park Community Association has affirmed its aim to achieve community benefits as part of the redevelopment of the former St Christopher’s School. The Association’s response to Aurora Group’s planned sale of the site, which will draw on input from all in the community, is being co-ordinated by Jeff Bishop who has considerable experience on planning matters and community engagement. St Christopher’s School, established in 1945, provided education and care for children and young adults with severe mental and physical disabilities until it closed last year. Aurora became owners of the site in 2015, although Hyde Lodge (an adult care home) is remaining in its current use and does not form part of the redevelopment site. The site is of a substantial size running along Westbury Park road, overlooking the Downs, bordering Redland Ward. Jeff Bishop told the Bishopston Voice: “This early stage was about establishing what Aurora might have in

Keep safe on Remembrance Sunday FATHER Andre Hart has released a message about The Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial in Westbury-on-Trym Village Remembrance Sunday, 8th November 2020. "It is with regret that I need to inform everyone who normally attends that we cannot hold our usual parade as we have done for many years. "With the numbers that we usually have, we cannot manage the risks that will clearly be present in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. So, we have come to the conclusion that we must ask everyone please do not come to the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday but remain in your church or at home for the act of remembrance, either in church or on television from London. This will disappoint all of us I know, but we do not have any other alternative. "There will however be an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial with six people only. This we can and must do. I know many will be tempted still to come but I do ask you not to. "Our highest priority whilst this Act of Remembrance is done is to keep everyone safe. This cannot be done with the usual crowd gathered around the Memorial. I do encourage all who would like to place a wreath, to do so in their own time later in the day. There will also be a gathering of a few of us on the 11th of November on the roundabout, but again, please, keep to the two metre distance rule and wear a mask to protect others. Thank you very much." Fr. Andre Hart on behalf of the convening churches

n NEWS by Keri Beckingham A GROUP of volunteers are set to clear out Canford Park pond. Concerns were raised about the amount of rubbish building up in the ornamental pond by members of the local community. Hilary Long, Chair of the Westbury-on-Trym Society (WoTSoc) raised the issue with Ella Hogg, Volunteer Coordinator Bristol Parks for Bristol City Council. Hilary said: “On the general matter of maintenance in the park, despite the diktats from our Mayor and attempts to comply by the council’s Parks department (that in the future parks city-wide would have to be maintained by 'volunteers'), there are also conditions and restrictions on what can be done or what they expect and when! “Ella came back to me straight away to say she would get her team of 'conservation volunteers' onto the job of clearance and welcomed the opportunity to give them a positive task. I gather from her that they are a young team of volunteers who she uses

Plans under way to clear out Canford Park pond

The fallen fruit, plant debris and rubbish building up in the ornamental pond will be cleared before winter sets in for various tasks around the city area.” Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze Councillor Geoff Gollop added: “I have had confirmation

from the Parks Manager that it will be dealt with, but that it is also a repeated problem that they are having to deal with.” Speaking to The Voice,

Ella Hogg said: “Bristol Parks staff recently met with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) leader, Rob, on site at Canford Park to plan restoration work to the pond in the sunken garden. As well as clearing out the pond, the group of TCV volunteers will work alongside our grounds team to work on the herbaceous beds and roses prior to winter. “It follows a request from the local community, Hilary Long of WoTSoc, to improve the pond in the park. We’re really pleased to be working as a Parks Service together with TCV to get this work done and hope it leads to further positive partnership projects in Canford Park. The work is planned for November 18 in the park, with volunteers from TCV being guided by our local parks operative, Andy.”

Seeing red over threat to events industry A DRAMATIC protest was staged by Bristol’s events industry in October to highlight the plight facing the worldwide live events industry. More than 40,000 people work in Bristol’s events industry including performers, musicians,

Chris honoured by Queen for work on ventilators A RESIDENT from Westburyon-Trym has been recognised in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Babock employee, Chris Spicer, has received a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the Covid-19 response. Back in March, Chris and his colleagues took up the urgent challenge from the government to build ventilators for the NHS in the fight against the virus. Chris, a former Babock graduate, had no prior medical knowledge and no experience of building ventilators. However, as project leader he was able to form a small team that produced a clinical grade ventilator within 60 days, as well as devise a supply chain solution from scratch so that it could be rolled out. Creating the Zephyr Plus

involved the team working through nights and weekends in order to meet a range of challenges and changes in clinical requirements, design specifications and deadlines. The aim of the project was to deliver 10,000 ventilators within 100 days, something which would normally take up to two and a half years to complete. Speaking about the recognition and the project, Chris told the Henleaze and Westbury Voice: “It's an honour to have been awarded the BEM. Even though it's an individual award, this recognition once again shines a light on the amazing effort of our whole team in getting a working ventilator produced in such a short space of time. “I'll never forget the level of engagement and commitment

of everyone in the project, all because they wanted to do the right thing and answer the country's call to save lives. We would never have achieved

what we did without everyone’s personal contribution and the sacrifices that were made, so thank you once again to all involved.”

Bristol poppy appeal launch Winter warmth from The Royal British Legion is asking everyone to back the 2020 Poppy Appeal in Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym in a new way. Esther Denton Community Fundraiser said: “Like so many things this year, the Appeal has to adapt to the threat of Covid-19 and we are asking the public to support us like never before, because every poppy counts. Whilst the pandemic has impacted the ways in which we deliver the Poppy Appeal in Bristol, our community of staff, volunteers, partners and suppliers have been working together to ensure that the 2020 Poppy Appeal is able to go ahead and we can all take part in Remembrance activity. “People may have to do something different to support the Poppy Appeal this year, including taking part in remote activity like ordering poppies through the post for your neighbours and local community, printing a poppy and displaying it in your window, or undertaking a virtual Poppy Run, but every poppy counts so we are asking people to please support in any way you can.” The money raised in 2020 will enable the Legion to continue its vital work delivering life-long support to Service and ex-Service personnel and their families through hardships, injuries and bereavements. The Legion uses donations in many ways including providing crisis grants, sport and art based recovery programmes, specialist dementia care, and advising and supporting with benefits and money issues. Anti-social behaviour prompts police to step up patrols HIGH visibility patrols are being conducted in a north Bristol neighbourhood following concerns about anti-social behaviour. The local community has recently voiced frustration about groups of young people acting anti-socially in Henbury as well as motorbikes being ridden dangerously through residential and community areas. As part of an effort to reassure the public we’re taking their concerns seriously and to disrupt ASB and gather evidence of it, officers from the local beat team have been carrying out additional patrols. Sergeant Richard Jones said: “We fully recognise anti-social behaviour can have a detrimental impact on people’s lives and we want people to know we are

doing everything we can to tackle it. “There is a formal problem solving plan in place which has been created in consultation with partner agencies which will see increased patrols conducted throughout the area by officers on foot but also by our mounted unit. “Just yesterday, more than a dozen officers have been out in some of the more problematic areas including the Crow Lane and Station Road areas to both deter those engaged in ASB and to speak with members of the community about it. “Preventing the anti-social driving of motorbikes is a particular priority for us as a beat team but we need people to understand the challenges we face in preventing it. It would

simply be too dangerous to pursue those riding recklessly through residential streets and parks and what we really need is the public’s help to build our intelligence picture about those involved. “If we can identify individuals or bikes we can take action. This might be seizing the bike but it can also be pursuing criminal charges or obtaining civil orders. “We’ve already issued one 17-year-old boy with a Community Protection Warning which bans him from possessing or riding a motorcycle unless at a designated track or with permission of the land owner. “We’ve also issued a 15-yearold girl with an Anti-Social Behaviour Contract while we’re applying to the courts for a Criminal Behaviour Order for

another 17-year-old boy. “As well as being a nuisance, those driving motorbikes dangerously through Henbury are putting innocent members of the public at risk. If you know who is riding these bikes, or have information about where they are being stored, please contact us on our 24-hour non-emergency number 101.”

St Peter’s Hospice cuts beds and jobs after lockdown causes £2m funds gap ST Peter’s Hospice has had to cut beds, stop its day services and review staffing because of a funding crisis in the wake of Covid-19. The pandemic led to cancellation of major fundraising events and the temporary closure of the charity's shops, meaning it has a shortfall of £2 million this year. It says the next 12 months will be crucial and is appealing to the people of Bristol to dig deep and help it continue its vital work. Actor and comedian Stephen Merchant was welcomed to the inpatient unit in Brentry in October to announce the year-long ‘When It Matters Most’ fundraising campaign. He said: “I can’t imagine Bristol without St Peter’s. The difference they have made to my family and the families of tens of thousands of others is immense. “It is devastating to realise the enormity of the impact that Covid-19 has had, and that critical end of life care is threatened and might not be available in the future.” All St Peter’s Hospice’s services are provided free and they support around 3,000 patients and their families every year. Despite being a frontline service only 20 per cent of their funding comes from the NHS. Over £4 million of the hospice’s funding comes through their shops, fundraising events and donations. Although there has been a slow return of the shops and activities, income is down significantly. The hospice is reviewing all services and expenditure and has already temporarily closed five beds in the inpatient unit and closed their day services (annual running cost £516,139) for the medium term.

How you can help the hospice

Frank Noble, CEO of St Peter’s Hospice, said: “The hospice exists because of the generosity of our supporters and we have never needed you more. Our ability to help those at home, those in need of specialist care and those who need support through bereavement during these extraordinarily difficult times is diminishing as every week goes by. Bike for Mike at the Tour de Bristol A FAMILY from Westbury-on-Trym are getting on their bikes to join the Tour de Bristol to raise legacy funds for husband and father, Mike Freeman. The event, which was due to take place in April, has been rescheduled as a Virtual Ride instead, taking place between October 24 and 31 to raise vital funds and support St Peter’s Hospice. Father-of-three Mike was the first patient in the new Inpatient Unit at St Peter’s Hospice. He was in the final stage of bladder cancer at that point but his son Tim fondly remembers his father’s excitement as he

came along the corridor in his wheelchair. “We had such a positive experience with Dad’s treatment at the Hospice and we were supported as a family the whole way through. The staff balanced his quality of life over independence and the focus was always on what was best for Dad. “Dad was very sporty so Bike for Mike at the Tour de Bristol seems appropriate." Mike’s family and friends have raised over £31,000 so far as a Tribute Fund for him. To donate see: www.stpetershospice.org/ tribute-funds/mike-freeman/

n NEWS AVON Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) and Bristol Bear’s Joe Joyce have unveiled a new community defibrillator. The device, crowdfunded by Simon Brookes, will be accessible from the front of the station and usable by anyone in the local community. Passers-by need to simply call 999 24 hours a day and they will be given the access code by South Western Ambulance Service. The device and lockable safe cost £1,800 and was completely crowdfunded by Simon, while the installation was paid for by AF&RS. Joe Joyce, Bristol Bears Lock, said: “It's great to be able to unveil such a life-saving bit of kit where I grew up. "Having gone through CPR training last year with the Bears, I know just how important this is and how much of a difference this can make in life or death situations. "I know that this station is right in the heart of the Southmead community and it is great to see this collaboration work taking place. "I think Simon has done a fantastic job in crowdfunding and I hope to see many more across the area." Neil Liddington, Risk Reduction Area Manager for AF&RS, added: “We are delighted to have installed a Public Access Defibrillators outside Southmead fire stations. “Our stations are naturally situated in the most populated areas, providing ideal locations for the devices in the heart of communities. “The defibrillators will be available to the public 24 hours a day and not just when the fire station is occupied.

King of Southmead Joe Joyce unveils lifesaving device funded by locals

“This shows just how committed the Service is to ensuring the local community is safe. Being able to offer that first aid option is key, but also being at the heart of the community. “We hope it is never needed, but if it is, we are happy to say it is there and accessible.” Simon Brookes has been involved in purchasing seven and crowd-funding six defibrillators around North West Bristol in the last year, including at The Methodist church hall, Westbury hill, The White Lion in Westbury, the RAFA club in Eastfield. This also includes Southmead fire station and three currently being installed at Beehive public house in Wellington Hill West,

the village shops in Stoke Bishop and the shopping area in North View, Westbury Park. This is his first collaboration with the fire service and he is already crowdfunding more. Simon said: “I was a community first responder for the ambulance service for nine years and realise the importance of bystander CPR and access to urgent defibrillation. “I have made it my aim to spread 24-hour community public access defibrillators across the city and am already talking with groups in Southville and Stockwood to this aim. “I raise money through crowdfunding, accepting donations from those taught

CPR free of charge, from local community groups and businesses and if that doesn't reach the target - leafleting! “Most people approached know it makes sense and it's just getting them to overcome any perceived obstacles. A spokesperson for South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “The more people equipped with the knowledge and confidence to administer CPR and the more defibrillators there are available, the more people we can save. “We encourage all businesses and workplaces to have defibrillators and CPR-trained people available to respond in an emergency situation.”

Stoke Bishop Village defibrillator: mission accomplished (almost)! THANKS to the generosity of 40 contributors, in particular M. who contributed a very generous £276, Simon Brookes has reached his target of £1,275 towards the purchase of a defibrillator to be installed at the Village shops. This sum, when added to the £600 contribution from Druid Fountain Neighbourhood Watch and the Sneyd Park Residents Association, has enabled Simon to order and install the equipment. Salvatore who owns the friendly and welcoming barbershop in the Village, and has done so for 28 years, has kindly agreed to host the public defibrillator on the wall of

his shop and has said that he’s proud to have been involved helping to get this initiative off the ground. The Next Steps The next stage is training people in the use of the defibrillator and in CPR

(CardioPulmonary Resuscitation). Anyone can suffer a cardiac arrest no matter how fit they are and a victim’s life expectancy chances increase from 1 in 10 to 3 in 10 with immediate CPR and defibrillation. The availability of this local defibrillator and trained users should make a real difference to anyone who suffers a cardiac arrest in our area. Help to Save a Life Why not join the band of volunteers and Free training sessions are being arranged at Stoke Bishop Village Hall to learn how to do CPR and use the defibrillator. Lockdown Stories of ‘historical significance’ AS the pandemic took hold and lockdown affected people's lives it became clear that there were stories to be told that were an important part of our history and needed to be recorded. Local residents, Elizabeth Newman, a former university teacher and researcher and Stan Hazell, a retired journalist, joined forces to discover the stories in the community where they live and encourage those involved to share them. They were joined by former teacher Annabelle Cartwright. Together they collected a variety of lockdown experiences from a family who experienced the virus, someone who took a test, mothers home schooling their children, NHS workers, business people, those self-isolating, business people and do-it-yourselfers taking advantage of the enforced time

Cash boost for the arts in Bristol TWENTY NINE arts and culture organisations in Bristol are to receive a £6.8million cash boost from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund. The Bristol Old Vic, SS Great Britain Trust, St George’s Bristol, Watershed Arts Trust and Motion Events each gain substantial sums. Aerospace Bristol, based in Filton, is also a major beneficiary. Over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, theatres and museums have suffered from a severe cut in visitors, putting many at risk of closure. The funding will be used to help performances to restart, allow venues plan for reopening, protect jobs and create new opportunities for freelancers.

for stories via social media and shouted conversations over garden fences and across the road. We are grateful to those who responded. It does give a picture of lockdown life, not the whole picture of course since we are one small community but we would like to think it will add to the overall picture of life in lockdown in the UK." Runner aims to raise £3000 PHRED Steer has run the Exmoor Trail Challenge this October to raise £3,000 for community support groups and increase awareness about the danger of Coronavirus. He said: “I’m doing this to raise awareness and highlight how real and dangerous this virus is. I feel we need to do more to help protect the most vulnerable in our society.” Eight years ago Phred had a health scare when he suffered a mild heart attack and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. He changed his lifestyle by eating more healthily and taking up running and was able to reverse his type 2 diabetes and reduce his medication. In March, following a trip to New York, Phred contracted undiagnosed Coronavirus. On his return to the UK he infected his family but his eldest daughter suffered more.

He said: “This is the hardest thing I’ve done since turning my health around and hopefully recovering from Coronavirus! “It wasn’t just Corona that was bad but getting back to fitness after. My recovery from this has been tough and has opened my eyes to the risk it poses to vulnerable groups.” Phred is raising money to support community groups in the different areas where his family lives, which includes Clifton and Henleaze. Speaking after the event he said: “I’ve done it and that was hard work! With the unfortunate announcements this week, these groups will require assistance so any contributions I’m sure are going to help in these coming months and would be gratefully appreciated. Come on, let’s get our hands in our pockets!” To donate see: https://bit. ly/2GSsxqN

Window Wanderland brings joy to a pandemic community AS the evenings draw in, the lights go on and while the curtains remain open, curious walkers can once again look into other people's houses. This year, more than any, we have been looking at one another's windows: first spotting rainbows, then teddy bears and also checking on our elderly or vulnerable neighbours when walking round our neighbourhood - the only way to get out of our homes in the early weeks of lockdown back in the spring. As time went on, people became ever more inventive. The teddy bears of a family on Eastfield put on a splendid show each day when the sun was out – with days by the beach, doing sport, ballooning, at the circus and more, followed by an engagement, wedding, honeymoon and the arrival of offspring! On Oakwood Road, a community zoo took shape with neighbours adding elephants, zebras, hippos, penguins, giraffes and more each week, all made from milk cartons, shoe boxes and anything else that could be salvaged from recycling boxes. In the Lake Road area, meanwhile, a mathematical scavenger hunt sent people from one house number to another around several roads. This is the same community spirit that Window Wanderland has been tapping into for the past five years and since 2018, also in the BS9 area. The BS9 Window Wanderland team are now starting to plan the 2021 event. "We've already had people ask us if we are going to do it again this winter and say that we'll need it more than ever," says Vicky. "We have now set the event for Friday 5 – Monday 8 February 2021 with an impromptu Halloween Wanderland on 31 October as a COVID-friendly alternative to trick or

treating.” The window and garden activities that emerged during lockdown have shown that everyone can get involved. Window Wanderland veteran Sarah says: "Some people think Window Wanderland is only for artistic people who can put up intricate displays but the joy that simple rainbows of every shape and size gave passers-by during lockdown, showed that everyone can participate and create something that others will enjoy looking at." With many streets having come together during the pandemic to support one another and now keeping in contact via social media groups, the hope is that more streets than ever will get involved next year. And as in previous years, schools, Brownies, churches

and other community groups are encouraged to participate too. The small team leading the BS9 Window Wanderland effort are always on the look-out for others to join in and help with preparations. Lucy adds: "Most of the work is around publicity and linking with local schools. So if you are a parent at a local school who is planning to take part, if you have a bit of time to put together some publicity materials, or if you are able to help spread the word via social media, get in touch!" Clean Air Zone charging consultation reopens A NEW consultation has been launched on revised proposals for a potential Clean Air Zone (CAZ), which would charge certain vehicles for driving into the centre. Research estimates that 300 people each year in Bristol die prematurely because of our dirty air, compared to just 12 in traffic accidents, and that air pollution particularly affects the most vulnerable in society: children and older people, and those with heart and lung conditions. The annual health cost of the impacts of poor air quality in Bristol is estimated at £83m.

Bristol City Council missed the third deadline to submit a plan to clean up Bristol’s air in September 2019. Following further air quality modelling to explore alternative ways that traffic pollution could be reduced, the council is now consulting on a small and larger charging zone option. The council hope a combination of major transport improvements and behaviour change may help to clean up Bristol’s air quality, maintaining the positive changes that were experienced during lockdown and lessening the need to charge or ban certain vehicles

Got News? Call 0117 9082121

via a CAZ. However, if pollution returns back to the illegal, preCovid-19 levels, a charging zone will be required. Residents are being asked to give their views on two new options for improving air quality, and both would involve charging the most polluting vehicles to drive into central Bristol. Mayor Marvin Rees said: “Everyone faces their own unique set of obstacles in tackling the environmental challenges we all face so we would encourage everyone to look at the changes they can make to their own lifestyles. It will make a difference

if we all work together.” The council is drawing on conclusions from independent academics within the ClairCity project, which collected local views and found that Bristolians want to contribute to tackling environmental problems. To have your say on a charging zone for vehicles, complete the online survey at: gov.uk/caz2020 before November 22. participating in the Scientific Training Programme (STP) - the qualifying programme for careers as clinical embryologists. Paul Wilson, BCRM’s scientific director, said: “Our entire reason for existence is to help women with fertility issues achieve their dream of having a baby. We’ve already been instrumental in thousands of births and we aim to help with many more, which means continuing investment in our staff’s expertise is essential.” The clinic www. FertilityBristol.com is staffed by world-recognised experts in fertility, many of whom are involved in innovative research, including Jen Nisbett, one of the candidates who has just started on the HSST programme. Jen won a top prize at Fertility 2020 – the sector’s annual national conference - with her research into how implanting frozen embryos in patients is more likely to result in a viable pregnancy in certain circumstances than using fresh embryos. Henleaze resident Jen and colleague Bonnie Dickinson have both committed to a five-year workplace-based programme that includes a Healthcare Leadership and Management Postgraduate diploma from the University of Manchester, professional exams at the Royal College of Pathologists and large research projects for a Doctorate in Clinical Science. Jen said: “Nationwide, only around 60 scientists have enrolled on the HSST this year, of whom we believe just three are doing the Reproductive Science programme – and two of them are us. Both the HSST and the STP represent a huge amount of work for the trainees and for the department, but the clinic has world class facilities, technology and expertise, so it's the best place to train.” Jen and Bonnie are the first two candidates from BCRM to enrol on the HSST programme, but the clinic has successfully trained a large number of STPs since the programme was launched in 2009. Competition for entry to both programmes is fierce plus HSST candidates face

Fertility specialists (from left to right): Megan Atkinson, Jen Nisbett, Paul Wilson, Bonnie Dickinson and Victoria Bithrey the dual challenge of securing funding and undergoing a vigorous recruitment process for a relatively small number of highly-coveted places. IVF technologists Megan Atkinson and Hannah Clark are mid-way through the STP and Sophia Seabrook starts the programme this month. The STP requires trainees to undertake rotations through various linked departments, including genetics, in order to learn how the Clinical Science disciplines work together. They then have to submit evidence to ensure they meet a huge number of competencies, and also study for a Masters degree. Embryologist Victoria Bithrey, who has worked at BCRM since 2012 and was supported by the clinic to take the STP, raised the stakes for the current STP students when she graduated this summer with a Distinction for the MSc degree. Paul Wilson concluded: “These programmes demand real commitment – both on the part of the trainees and those of us who are involved in delivering their training. “But these dedicated students help perpetuate BCRM’s position as a centre of excellence, all playing their part in ensuring we continue to deliver the very best fertility treatment for NHS and private patients equally. So everybody benefits: trainees, the clinic, and patients alike.”

n EDUCATION WESTBURY-ON-TRYM school girl Lilly Holmes is one of four athletes nominated for a Sports Women of the Year 'Young Inspiration Award' by the Sunday Times r. Lilly, aged 12, is a natural athlete who excels in all sports, but her real passion is hockey. She has been playing for her club, Clifton Robinsons since she was seven, and for her school, Redmaids’ High since she was nine. But lockdown looked like it was going to put a stop to all her hockey activity - that is until she took matters into her own hands. With all practice sessions and matches cancelled, Lilly decided to put her time at home to good use by recording a daily hockey video and uploading it to her Twitter account @miss_hockey1. Her daily skills started with simple drills around homemade obstacle courses and learning to aerial over a ladder. She then moved on, using online video recordings, to teach herself more technical skills such as drag flicking. Lilly continued practising and posting daily, right up until day

‘ New normal’ for pupils at St Bons IT has been an incredibly busy and productive start to the new school year at St Bonaventures. All members of the school community have shown great resilience in how they have adapted to our new ways of operating under Covid restrictions. The school has continued to offer breakfast and after school club provision since the start of Term 1 and this is working well with children grouped in their year group pods. As children have moved through the term, the school has been able to introduce some of the ‘normal’ things pupils enjoy in a typical school year, including after school sports clubs such as football, netball and hockey. A Year 4 drama group is working on a performance of A Midsummer

Night’s Dream which pupils plan to film and share with parents. This year the offer of forest school is extended to pupils in other year groups as well as those in Reception. During Terms 1 and 2 Open Days have been allocated for prospective parents to sign up to. Tours are taking place in small socially distanced groups. Parents are required to wear masks and will not enter any classrooms. A video tour will also be available during Term 2 for prospective parents who do not have the opportunity to look around. This will be available via email upon request. Please email admissions.stbonaventures@ bristol-schools.uk for more information.

Bristol University Air Squadron wins national award STUDENTS from Bristol University Air Squadron (BUAS) have won the Royal Air Force Air Cadets/University Air Squadron of the Year title at the RAF Benevolent Fund’s annual awards. The ceremony, held virtually on 13 October, was attended by hundreds of RAF personnel and supporters of the Fund in a night which celebrates the achievements of those who support the RAF’s leading welfare charity, from dedicated individuals and groups to RAF stations and corporate partners. The win comes after years of supporting the RAF Benevolent Fund from fundraising to volunteering – the students have done it all! They have cycled 100km to raise funds, organised quizzes and bake sales, volunteered for bucket collections, performed as a cheer squad for runners taking part in the Bristol Half Marathon – as well as some members running the race – and helped the charity to spread the word about the lifechanging support it can offer. Sqn Ldr Si Brewis, Officer Commanding BUAS, said: “Thank you to my staff and especially thank you to the students. This award is in recognition of their significant efforts and their time that they have put into supporting the RAF

Benevolent Fund, both raising funds and raising awareness in the Fund’s 100th year.” The award was presented by Dave Appleby, Director Marketing and Sales at Electronics UK Leonardo, who sponsored it. Air Vice-Marshal Chris Elliot, Controller of the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: “During my first few months at the Fund I was struck by the dedication of our supporters who go to incredible lengths to ensure we are able to continue our work supporting the RAF Family. The awards are our opportunity to celebrate those who make all of this possible and thank all our supporters. “Huge congratulations to all of the winners, especially BUAS for all they do. We truly would not be able to do what we do without every single one of our supporters.” Now in its eighth year, the RAF Benevolent Fund Awards recognise the outstanding contributions of its supporters, personnel on stations and corporate partners who support the charity each year. The RAF Benevolent Fund has been supporting the RAF for more than 100 years, providing help through the toughest times. If you know an RAF veteran in need, go to rafbf.org to find out how the Fund could help.

Work set to start on Stoke Lodge pavilion COTHAM School has secured all the funding it needs to fully repair the sports pavilion on the school playing fields at Stoke Lodge. The school has been allocated a grant from the Government’s Education and Skills Funding Agency and this has been topped up with money from Cotham's capital funds. The school has appointed a local, Bristol based building company to carry out the refurbishment work. The family-owned company will use a small number of Bristol-based sub-contractors for specialist skills and Bristol companies to supply the building materials required to complete this project. Building works are expected to start on site very soon as the project must be completed by February 2021. Cotham School has full approval from the city council as the landowner to carry out the refurbishment and the scheme of works does not require planning approval. Cotham School said: “It is great news that students, staff and sports club users will soon have a newly refurbished pavilion to use when they visit our playing fields. We know this will be very popular with everyone, and enhance our sports provision.”

Colston's Girls' School set for new identity

COLSTON'S Girls’ School, founded in 1891, is to have a new name. Eighty one per cent of students and staff voted to change the name of the school, which was built with money endowed by Edward Colston to support education. Although a majority of the 454 respondents to a public consultation opposed a name change, the board of Venturers Trust, which runs the school, unanimously agreed that it was time to remove the link to the slave trader from the school's title. The new name is expected to be announced this month. Board chair Gail Bragg said: “For some people this announcement will be disappointing and for others it will be cause for celebration and it’s important that we acknowledge that. “We will not be erasing the

history of CGS; it is a part of Bristol’s story which is now an integral and permanent part of the curriculum. However, the school will be forging a new identity that represents its diverse and inclusive community and this is the momentous beginning of a new chapter.” CEO of Venturers Trust, David Watson, said: “Students have experienced the power of democracy first-hand and I am extremely proud of the respect they have shown for others throughout the process. It is important that young people understand how to influence change in a positive way so that they develop the core skills necessary to build a sustainable and inclusive future for a global community. In a year that has been filled with so many different challenges, the school community can look to the future as they rebrand and renew.”

Marvin Rees joined Councillor Anna Keen, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Principal and Chief Executive of City of Bristol College, Andy Forbes, and students at the Brislington Centre’s eco-apartment grand opening. The eco-apartments each have two bedrooms, a living space with cooking and washing facilities and a bathroom. The homes are a joint project between the college and Bristol City Council, with the council financing the venture to better support special educational needs (SEN) students in Bristol. The Brislington Centre is managed in partnership with Bristol City Council and offers week-day accommodation for up to 13 students with SEN. The centre’s team supports the students to develop skills for independent living, including cleaning, cooking, washing as well as learning how to budget and use public transport. The three eco-apartments act as a stepping stone for the Brislington Centre students to live independently. The accommodation will mean the students who have been residents at the centre for a number of years will have the chance to further develop the skills they have learned and the opportunity to move out of the residential house and into

The council's Marvin Rees and Anna Keen with City of Bristol College principal Andy Forbes and students at the new apartments their own living quarters as a prerequisite for living completely independently after college. At the opening, Mayor Rees said: “I am delighted to open the new eco-apartments at the Brislington Centre, Bristol’s first educational residential training centre for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), today, as part of Project Rainbow. “Before 2017 facilities like this did not exist in Bristol; together, with families, young people and the City of Bristol

College, we have worked to make sure that our young people with SEND have access to education and training opportunities, while being supported to live independent and meaningful lives in their communities.” Guests at the opening were given a tour of the new facilities. Mr Forbes said: “The work of these fabulous new ecoapartments underlines our commitment as Bristol’s Further Education College to meeting as wide a range of educational needs as possible. The

opportunity for young people with disabilities to live a full and independent life is great for them, great for their families and creates a really inclusive local community.” Councillor Keen said: “Having a modern facility like this in the city means our young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) have the opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in a supportive environment, while being able to live independently in their local community."

n FAIRFIELD High School (FHS) has been celebrating black achievements during Black History Month in a variety of ways. It has commissioned a piece of artwork to feature in the school’s Atrium. Seven Saints of St Pauls celebrates the legacy of people from the community who broke down racial barriers and worked for full integration. This unique artwork is even closer to the school’s heart, for one of the Saints,

Delores Campbell, is related to Assistant Vice Principal (and former Fairfield student) Cashan Campbell. She said: “Michele Curtis, Creator of Seven Saints of St Pauls, has helped share the stories of these unsung heroes in some fantastic works of art. This affects me on a personal level, as my beloved Nanny, Delores Campbell was one of these influential figures who touched the hearts of many. Fairfield

is well known for its diverse community for which we are extremely proud. We cannot wait to have this large and colourful mural for all to enjoy at the end of this special month… it couldn’t be more apt.” The theme for Black History Month 2020, strongly endorsed at Fairfield, is ‘Black History is all our History’ to ensure black history is not something that is studied in October, but all the time.

Dolphin School to keep name but change its emblem THE Dolphin School in Montpelier is to keep its name but change its emblem. The primary school is part of Venturers Trust, sponsored by the Society of Merchant Venturers and the University of Bristol. The decision follows that of another trust school, Colston's Girls', to change its name away from that of slave trader Edward Colston. The Dolphin School was given its name because of the dolphin on the Colston family crest. Pupils helped to shape the consultation over the change as part of their Curious-city curriculum. As well as hosting an online public survey, the school delivered lessons and workshops for pupils alongside interactive sessions for parents and carers to help stimulate discussion at home. The process concluded with a ballot among the immediate school community,

with the questionnaire available in English, Sudanese and Somali. From a combined total of 460 votes, made up of current pupils, parents/carers, staff and governors, 46% voted to keep the name and change the emblem, which was the majority vote of three options. The initial public survey came to the same conclusion, with 46% of 68 respondents also voting to change only the emblem, again the majority vote. Kate Jenkins, acting principal, said: “The children have enjoyed exploring two sides of a story so deeply connected to Bristol. They know who Edward Colston was and where much of his wealth came from, but many had not made the connection between the dolphin on the Colston family crest and the name and emblem of our school.” Feedback from the survey included a strong feeling that the dolphin is a positive image that

represents intelligence, curiosity, playfulness and harmony and that this is a positive association for the school. After half term, pupils will begin to consider how the school’s identity might be reflected in a new emblem and a local artist will be commissioned

to help bring that identity to life. Gail Bragg, Chair of Trustees for Venturers Trust, said: “This has been an important journey for The Dolphin School community and the children have developed an important life skill in how to properly listen and be heard.

Schools raise £10k to fund kitchen for Nepal pupils

Singdi school staff with new building & mountains

PUPILS from two Bristol schools are celebrating the completion of a new school kitchen and dining room - 4,500 miles away in Nepal. Students from Westbury-onTrym C of E Academy and Bristol Free School, together with a group of local supporters, raised more than £10,000 last year to fund the new addition to Shree Himalaya School in Singdi. Westbury-on-Trym has had a friendship link with the nine room Singdi school for 21 years since local GP and now chair of Pahar Trust Nepal (PTN) Dr Tim Mitchell led a group of students, including his own son, and parents to visit the school, which was originally funded by another donor. Last year, Dr Mitchell and current students and parents returned to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the school link and pledged to upgrade the existing kitchen, which was just a tin roofed shack with a single stove to a modern, warm and dry place for students to enjoy their lunch. As a result of Covid-19, construction was delayed due to challenges getting materials to site but the hard-working team made great progress despite this and the monsoon season, and the project was completed only a little behind schedule. The kitchen and dining room is just the latest project supported by Westbury-onTrym C of E Academy. Since the friendship link was established,

around £36,000 has been raised, which has enabled the development of vital new learning spaces in Singdi, such as a library, computer suite, sixth form block, library, IT room and science laboratory. With additional funding from Rotary Club of Bristol, a cardamom plantation has been established that will provide ongoing financial support to the school. Westbury-on-Trym Academy also helped the community carry out vital repairs and re-building work to the whole of the first floor of the school, which had been badly damaged in the major earthquake of 2015. Alan Sweetman, executive director of PTN, said: “It’s great to experience such a long-standing relationship between these two schools. It has brought both schools so much: raising awareness and a better understanding of different cultures, education systems, climates and traditions for staff, children, parents and carers within the two communities. “We are obviously sad that we can’t visit Nepal at the moment to celebrate this latest development, but we have been staying in touch through technology as best as we can and Singdi has been sending us and the schools regular updates and photographs. We’re all together in spirit.” Amanda Pritchard, head of Westbury-on-Trym Academy, said: “Pupils and teachers have gained so much from this

Antiques shop to reopen under new management THE antiques shop in North View is under new management and will be reopening in early November, with Martin Williams' upholstery business continuing to operate as normal. The shop will be run by local antiques specialist IIan Chaney's period pieces on display at a local Ian Chaney who, antiques fair after 20 years of selling antiques online globally and at auctions, is keen to provide a more personal service in his shop. Westbury Park resident Ian said: “Buying and selling online can often feel impersonal and the shop will give an opportunity for local people to see antique items first-hand and find out more about them.” He will be selling good quality antique furniture, lighting and other decorative items dating from the eighteenth century all the way through to the mid-20th century design classics. “I’m delighted to be joining the thriving community of independent shops and restaurants on North View and hope to provide a shop full of functional and beautiful antiques where people are welcome to come in and browse,” added Ian.

HIS month I’ve had a little more time to read than I usually do. It’s been interesting, and some of the things I've shared from my reading has certainly raised a few eyebrows in our house! The first ‘magic’ I read about is an eye drop that you can take, that claims to help your eyes focus up close, even past middle age (no quips please - it’s approaching some of us all too fast). The idea is that the drops help stop the impact of the natural firming of the eye’s lens that would normally make seeing close up a bit trickier as the years tick by. Now this process has been happening since man first walked the earth, so it’s a perfectly normal human (ageing) process that starts to have an impact for most of us anywhere from our 40’s to our 50’s. The clever thing about these drops, and yes I’m still going on about them, is that they make our pupils smaller, giving a pinhole effect. Now if you’ve ever tried to make a pinhole camera you will know that making light focus through a smaller gap keeps it in better focus. This sounds amazing right! Let’s all take the drops now eh. Before we get carried away though I should say that these drops are not new to us eye specialists. We’ve used these in our clinics for years to treat a rapid onset type of glaucoma - a condition that can rob you of your vision. Sounds great I hear you say, drops that mean we don’t need reading glasses and we don’t get glaucoma either. Give them to us all now! However, as with all magic, there is surely more than meets the eye. In this case, these drops achieve better near focus by making a muscle in the eye tight, and like any muscle tightening it can ache after a while. In fact sometimes the ache can induce a persistent dull headache or even a migraine, perhaps an acceptable side effect if the alternative is dramatic loss of vision from glaucoma, but is it worth it to just reduce the need for reading glasses? No doubt

you will all have an opinion on this, and it may well be “give me the drops!” I read with interest a quote from a leading London eye surgeon who said “as these drops can cause headache and eye ache, as well as stopping you seeing clearly for driving at night, why not just wear glasses for reading which are safe and effective”. Let the discussion roll on eh! In the meantime, as these drops are not available, perhaps we’ll just keep wearing glasses to help roll back the years and keep our eyes feeling young. Our MAXX glasses are designed for just this reason, we can see clearly far and close, and stay looking young too! You & your loved ones are most welcome to come and see us whatever your eye care needs. Whether you wear glasses for near, far or both, our expert team is ready & waiting to help you! We just ask that you telephone first to book a time to come in, to help us keep you all safe. Please call our Henleaze practice on 0117 962 2474 or our Fishponds practice on 0117 965 4434.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Art Trail 2020-style! ARTISTS in the North Bristol area are determined to go ahead with the popular North Bristol Art Trail during the last weekend of November. From sculpture to paintings, jewellery to printmaking, there's something delightful for everyone. For the first time, the trail will be open virtually via a public Facebook group, NBA Art Trail 2020. Join the group any time through November to see previews of artists' work. The virtual trail itself will launch on Friday 27 November, and carry on throughout the weekend of 28 and 29 November. During this time you can interact with the artists, learn about their making techniques, and buy their artwork direct. Many artists are still hoping to open their homes and studios to the public during the weekend of November 28-29, adhering to Government guidelines on Covid-19 safety. Some will show their work on the walls of public spaces such as cafes and bars

along Gloucester Road, while others will create displays in their windows. This means that you will be able to safely follow a walking trail, enjoying art displays and chat to artists or see artwork on your screen and interact with artists from the comfort of your home. North Bristol Artists are adapting their approach for this special trail. For instance, Toni Burrows has created amazing mosaics to use as images for her book The Mermaid and the Tower. Although Toni won't be able to open every floor of her incredibly mosaiced home you'll still be able to meet her and see the original mosaics used. Laura Robertson is a prolific artist, producing quirky images in every medium from oils to lino prints. Her work will be on display at Cafe Jackaloupe on Gloucester Road and hopefully she'll also be able to be there to chat about her work. Jenny Urquhart will appearing in person when she shows her

popular paintings of Bristol and Leigh Woods in the New Gallery at the back of Room 212, while jewellery maker Katie Johnston will be offering her enamel wares outside Marialina's next door. The North Bristol Art Trail website will give up to date information about which artists will be showing their work on the walking trails, so you can plan your route, and check whether an appointment time is required. In this difficult year it's

important to plan Christmas early to avoid queues, shop locally and support our artists and makers. The North Bristol Art Trail provides a perfect way to find unique beautiful gifts. It's also a chance to brighten up your home with some new art. Nothing beats wandering round the North Bristol Art Trail on a crisp November day but this year, with the virtual trail, you can still indulge your senses if it's lashing with rain!

New charity resilience fund to distribute £20m THE Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has launched a new £20 million fund to help charitable organisations in England that support those hardest hit by Covid-19. The CAF Resilience Fund will distribute grants ranging from £10k to £100k to deliver rapid relief from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Both registered and unregistered small and mid-sized charitable organisations, including community interest companies and community education organisations can apply. The causes and communities the fund aims to help include people living in poverty, Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities, children and young people, the unemployed, the homeless, people with physical or learning disabilities and those pushed into crisis because of Covid-19. The funding for the CAF Resilience Fund is provided by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Community Match Challenge funding scheme, part of the Government’s £750m coronavirus support package for charities. Monica Brown, Head of Charity Advisory at CAF, said: “This fund represents an opportunity for CAF to help get desperately needed funds to the charities that have been at the very heart of the response to this pandemic. “This money will be spent to help the areas of the country where the need is greatest, including communities that have struggled to access earlier funding, those that face cultural barriers and those that have lacked a voice through these long, difficult months.” Charities applying must deliver their services in England and be able to spend the grant money before 31 March 2021.

WHILE most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

News and views from our city councillors Steve Smith (Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze) Grange Park Flats I wrote last month about an appalling planning application which has been made to add two storeys on top of Grange Court flats in Henleaze. This is und er a new piece of law which gives developers the right to do this kind of thing, but with safe guards in place which allow the Counci l to reject unsuitable applications. We are still waiting for con firmation but as I write it seems likely tha t the council’s planning department is not going to reject this awful proposal. Since we have ‘called in’ the application this means that the final decision on it will be made by a committee of councillors. This may happen on No the date won’t be confirm vember 11, but ed until after the Voice goes to print. We are supporting reside nts in opposing this application. If you agree with us that it

Steps to planning your estate IN order to ensure that on your death your wealth is distributed in line with your wishes, it is essential you make arrangements. Consider the following steps in organising your estate plan: Talk openly with your family about what you would like to happen on your death. The subject of dying and inheritance is often viewed as a taboo subject in families, but unless those conversations take place, it may be difficult for family members to understand your requests. Write a will – a will is a

way for you to legally express how you want your assets to be distributed on your death. Astonishingly, around 60% of adults in the UK have not written a will. Ensure it is kept up to date. Create a will trust – a will trust only becomes effective when someone dies and is a way for assets to be protected and distributed to beneficiaries in the future. Write policies in trust – ensure any life assurance policies are written in trust. This will enable the money to be passed on to beneficiaries immediately

without having to wait for probate. Make gifts during lifetime – you can use your annual gifting allowance of £3,000, or can use a number of trusts to pass money on tax efficiently. You can also pass on family heirlooms during your lifetime. Trust planning – if you value control and certainty over how your wealth is distributed, combined with possible inheritance tax advantages, trust planning should be considered. There are a wide range of trusts to choose from which have varying levels of access, flexibility and inheritance tax efficiency to suit your needs. When you have worked hard to acquire wealth, or have been

fortunate enough to inherit some family wealth, the natural instinct and desire is to protect that wealth for future generations. Let us know if you need some assistance, it’s our bread and butter. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Stopping the virus is our personal responsibility IT has been over six months since coronavirus restrictions were introduced and I’m sure many of us are just as frustrated and concerned as we were back in March. It is important that we do not let our guard down. We all need to continue to play our part and follow the Government’s three tier regulations to prevent the virus transmission increasing any further in our area. We have seen how certain parts of the country are now facing increased restrictions and we must do all we can to avoid this from happening across Avon and Somerset. I know local people are concerned what will happen if a national lockdown is enforced, and how this will impact our lives, local businesses, workplaces and schools. Let’s hope it does not reach this stage and, if it does, it is not for as long as the lockdown in the spring.

Please continue to follow the rules and guidance to keep you and your family safe as well as protecting the most vulnerable in our communities. As I’ve said many times over the last six months, please take personal responsibility; you might not feel you are vulnerable to the virus but other people’s loved ones will be. We know that the transmission of this virus can be rapid, so we have to work as a collective to stop coronavirus and put an end to its disruptive nature. Last month, we marked National Hate Crime Awareness Week and it was an ideal opportunity to talk about the impact this crime has on many people’s lives. This year, the global conversation has shone a light on the grave injustices experienced by black people, people of colour, disabled people and many other communities as a result of coronavirus,

the national lockdown and the criminal justice system. A brave victim of hate crime wrote about their experience, which was published on the PCC website. Despite living and working in the UK for 15 years, they were told they “didn’t belong here” as “this is England for English people” and was called a “foreigner”. The victim explained how the experience affected their well-being and why they believe others should report similar hate crime incidents to the police or services. Being targeted because of your age, race, sexual orientation, religion or any other reason is unacceptable. We must stand together united against hate crime. We need to reach out to victims of this awful crime and remind them they are not alone: there are organisations, services and individuals who are

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens out there who can offer support, including SWAN (www.swanadvocacy.org.uk) and SARI (www. sariweb.org.uk). I want to reassure victims that if you report hate incidents to the police, you will be taken seriously. I know many survivors feel like they will be wasting police time if they report but this is not the case: you will be listened to and supported.

n MAYOR'S VIEW

Clean air begins at home

W

ELL before the pandemic, I spoke about our moral, ecological and legal duty to clean up Bristol’s air. Last month, we set out the next steps in our plan to deliver cleaner air for the city and to do so in a fair and just way which brings all parts of the city with us. We want you to give us your views at www.bristol.gov. uk/caz2020 before the consultation closes on Sunday 22 November. In recent months the council has taken steps to lock in the benefits that lockdown brought to our environment and air quality. Bringing forward major transport improvements – such as the closure of Bristol Bridge and Baldwin Street to through traffic, and the pedestrianisation of the Old City – have allowed us to improve traffic flow, reroute polluting vehicles from areas with low air quality, and give priority to public transport, walking and cycling. Before lockdown, we were also well on our way to making public transport in our city even more environmentally sustainable. We have worked closely with Firstbus to introduce biogas-powered buses, which cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85%. We have also secured funding for businesses in Bristol to loan free electric vehicles, in addition to launching the region’s new

electric vehicle charging network (including a rapid charging station at Eastville Park). All this has allowed us to make big improvements in Bristol’s air quality. We are covering all bases, however, which is why we’d like to hear your views on our revised proposals for a Clean Air Zone. These include a charging zone for polluting commercial vehicles, but also charging private cars which don’t meet emissions standards set by the government. We have long warned that charging non-compliant private cars would have a disproportionate effect on our poorest households who are more likely to own older vehicles which emit more pollution. That is why we want to press ahead with our more radical plans of redirecting traffic forward to bring Bristol’s air quality to compliant levels without a charge for private vehicles. However, I want to stress that the retention of the benefits we saw during lockdown and the delivery of cleaner air in Bristol won’t come through the stroke of a pen in Whitehall, or solely from the efforts of the City Council. We all need to minimise our contribution to air pollution in the city. Changing our transport habits are a big part of that, but we can – and must – do more. Unlike the government, the World Health Organisation highlights how reducing particulate matter

The Mayor’s View Each month Bristol mayor Marvin Rees shares his views with Henleaze & Westbury Voice

(PM) is crucial in order to cut premature death through pollution. For us in Bristol that means obeying the rules of the smoke control area that covers the whole city, not burning wood on an open fire, and recycling waste rather than burning it on a bonfire. Cleaning up the air in Bristol will require the whole city – all of us – to come together with a common purpose: to adjust the way we live to protect each other from pollution, particulates and toxic fumes.

n FROM OUR MP

Online town halls, a chance to get your message across Your Champion in Bristol I’d normally be writing to invite you to a coffee morning, pub politics or a street stall to hear directly from you about your hopes and concerns for our neighbourhoods, our city and the country. Given the ongoing Covid restrictions, we’re now having to do that online. I’m therefore hosting a series of online ‘town hall’ events across the whole constituency. If you’re free I’d like you to join me at the Westbury-on-Trym virtual town hall on Saturday morning, 10:30am November 28. We’re holding a Henleaze and Westbury Park town hall on January 16 too. You can reserve a ticket online at www.darrenjonesmp.eventbrite. co.uk. The town hall will be held on Zoom – which I’m sure many of you have now had to use – but you can also dial in via the telephone if you’d prefer. These online town halls give me a chance to listen to you about your priorities as well as giving you an opportunity to ask me any questions you might have. We unfortunately still have the health and economic costs of pandemic to deal with, but I also want to keep pushing on with local issues from securing investment in transport and our highstreets to improving access to green space and tackling climate change. In other news, it was also fantastic to see some of you at my recent Climate Assembly meeting on how we reach net zero. The

Citizens Assembly model brings people across the UK together to discuss and solve problems. I’m glad to see Bristol City Council trying this with the One City project. I hope to do something similar as we update the North Bristol Transport Plan and tackle other issues including housing and green investment. Finally, I’m excited to announce the return of my Christmas Card competition. This year, we’ll be taking entries from primary schools across our constituency, and I’ll be publishing the winning designs in December. Local schools will let you know how your child can take part, but if you want further information please get in touch with me. Your Voice in Parliament Confusion has returned to Parliament as the public, scientists and MPs have pushed the Government for clarity about local lockdown laws, financial support for workers and businesses, and our testing capacity. We’ve so far been lucky in Bristol, compared to other parts of the country, but the chaos in Westminster is still frustrating. I know that many of you are frustrated too: with access to tests, changing guidance, difficulties in your businesses or at work and a continued restriction on seeing loved ones, even during child birth or with elderly relatives in care homes. The reality is that we need to get used to managing this better

for the long term. Sir Patrick Vallance, the Chief Scientific Officer, when I questioned him on the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, said that Coronavirus is likely to be with us, like Influenza, for the foreseeable future. That’s why it’s so important that we start managing this disease better, as well as not losing our grip on other priorities important to the country. That’s why I pushed for more green transport investment from Government during a Westminster Hall debate attended by Bristol MPs in October. I also voted for key amendments to the high profile Agricultural and Fishery Bills to protect food standards and meet our net-zero ambitions. After consulting with neighbourhood planning groups across Bristol, I supported amendments to the Towns and Country Planning bill that would protect the character of our neighbourhoods while ensuring affordable housing is built where it’s needed most. And – for reasons I still struggle to understand – I was unsuccessful in voting for free school meals for our poorest children to be extended over Christmas, which was voted down by Conservative MPs. On the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee, I’m leading the next stage of our Coronavirus Recovery super inquiry. This month, I've continued my work on how the country needs to recover and return to

Darren Jones column economic growth post lockdowns, with all of this in the context of our vital net zero targets. In my session with Metro Mayors – including Andy Burnham – we heard how Westminster needs to trust local leaders and local authorities to deliver local solutions, instead of spending significant sums of public money on schemes led by Westminster which seem unable to work. As we head into Winter, I will continue to do all that I can to make sure your voice is heard in Westminster and that we’re all doing the best we can in Bristol to deal with the challenges we all face. So please keep raising your issues to me at our town halls, fortnightly Q&As, phone surgeries, via email at darren.jones.mp@ parliament.uk, or by phone on 0117 959 6545.

Ready to roll! E-scooters set to hit the road in sustainable transport trial by Keri Beckingham THE name of the company appointed to deliver the region’s e-scooter trials has been announced. Residents and visitors will soon be able to get around on e-scooters provided by Swedish company Voi Technology Ltd. The hop-on hop-off devices will be available in Bristol, Bath and South Gloucestershire at key locations in such as stations, university campuses, hospitals and large employment sites. The 12-month trial is being led by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) in partnership with Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils. It will have some key rules, including: • Privately owned e-scooters remain illegal to use on roads, pavements, parks and any other areas. The only place that privately owned e-scooters can legally be used is on private land with the permission of the landowner. • Only e-scooters that are hired or leased through the West of England’s trial can be used legally on roads, cycle lanes or cycle tracks. Effectively, e-scooters that are part of the trial can be used wherever cycles are permitted. • E-scooters cannot be used on COVID-19 restrictions have given local historian and author Alan Aburrow the time he needed to complete a long-standing family commitment to publish a booklet chronicling the life and times of this grandfather, the late Major Frank Merchant, MC, DCM, who was born into an army life in 1885. This recently published 60-page booklet chronicles the lifetime experiences of Frank Merchant from “cradle to grave”. It includes his recollections of the first ten years of his early childhood, offering a fascinating insight into late 19th century army life, as seen through the eyes of a young boy who was born into an army family in 1885. His father was a senior NCO in the 1st Lincolnshire Regiment.

pavements. • E-scooters are classed as motorised vehicles and riders of authorised trial e-scooters must hold a full or provisional driving licence. Through a longer-term rental scheme, residents will also be able to take e-scooters home and use them for journeys, with the hope that it will give them confidence that they can get to and from their destinations when bus and train capacity is limited. Rental e-scooters on the trial will be capped to a maximum

speed of 15.5 mph, and geofencing technology will allow slower speed restrictions to be imposed in defined areas, which will be identified in collaboration with the police, the operator and equalities groups. Voi also has the ability to restrict or bar noncompliant users. West of England Mayor Tim Bowles said: “This is an exciting prospect, bringing a new, low carbon way to travel around the region, and making it accessible for every community. “We have been talking with our colleagues

from other combined authorities running e-scooter trials around the country in order to learn from their experiences, and Voi bring their own experience too which is valuable. .” Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Scooters are a great way to travel while reducing emissions, air pollution and congestion, and we will work closely with the operator and share experiences with other cities to make sure they are used responsibly and safely by those taking up the trial.” WECA has been engaging with groups representing vulnerable road users – including the RNIB and Age UK – and will continue to do so throughout the e-scooter trial. It will also work closely with the operator, stakeholders and the public during the 12-month trial to continually review the trial and refine how it works. The exact start date for the trials is subject to discussions with Voi and authorisation from the Department of Transport, but it was thought that the trials would begin by the end of October. The location of the e-scooters and the cost of hire have yet to be announced. For more information, visit: https://travelwest.info/ projects/e-scooter-trial

Get in touch if you need our support

A COLLABORATION of local charities has come together to form a Support Hub to help people over 50 cope with the impact of the coronavirus in Bristol. The Support Hub provides a range of different services including practical, social and emotional support, such as shopping and weekly social phone calls, as well as virtual activities that you can do from the comfort of your own home. Due to social distancing measures, we are conscious there is a risk that some people will feel lonely and socially isolated during the pandemic. We feel it is important to think about social opportunities to keep you connected whilst at home and as a group of charities, we are offering virtual activities like shared reading, art sessions, Tai-Chi classes and much more, which you can get involved in either online or over the phone. The pandemic has been an unsettling time, filled with stress and anxiety for many people. We would urge anyone over 50 who has a need for the services provided by the Support Hub to get in touch. Most of the services provided by the Support Hub are either free or low cost. The helpline for the Support Hub operates

from 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday. Sometimes the helpline will be busier than usual, but if messages are left on the phone or by email out of working hours, we will always respond as soon as possible. You are not alone.

Maria to take helm at North Bristol NHS Trust MARIA Kane OBE has been appointed as the new Chief Executive of North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and will start in April 2021. Bringing extensive experience of NHS leadership, she is currently Chief Executive of North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, where she has been in post since December 2017. particularly in North London. She has previously been a trustee of Open Mind, Umbrella Mental Health, Young Minds, as well as an adviser to the Lullaby Trust and a special adviser to the Care Quality Commission. “I am firmly of the belief that we can only do that by working in genuine partnership with our local community, health and care partners, the voluntary sector, patients and their representatives, and of course, staff in all positions and professions, and I look forward to building strong relationships with you all, and putting our values at the heart of what we do and how we do it.” NBT’s existing Chief Executive Andrea Young is due

to retire in December. Deputy Chief Executive Evelyn Barker will then take on the role of interim Chief Executive until Maria arrives.

n NEWS A RESIDENT from Henleaze has published a bedtime story he wrote for his children in the 1970s to raise funds for a local stroke charity. Andy Black, 76, has lived on Lake Road for four years with his wife Sue. A keen writer and illustrator, he started off creating children’s stories for his daughters Jenny, Susie and Devon while they travelled around Australia over five years while he was working as a trainee anaesthetist in Sydney. Andy created his first draft of Hugh’s Hiccups on a BBC microcomputer in the 1980s, which he kept in a drawer. However, after reading about self publishing during lockdown, he thought it would be good to get the book published. The book tells the story of a dragon who got the hiccups because his uncle played a prank on him, and over six chapters he is able to cure his hiccups in stages. Andy approached three publishers, and the book was taken on by Biddles who are based in Kings Lynn in Norfolk. Now he is using the book to raise funds for Bristol After Stroke, a local charity for people who supported him following a stroke in 2014, which occurred hours after a total knee replacement operation and was due to an unsuspected hole in his heart. The stroke affected Andy's hobbies of amateur dramatics, and landscape or portrait painting. However, despite his impairment, he enjoys many other interests such as birdwatching, rambling, bridge and swimming. Speaking about his book and

Andy’s children's story raises funds for charity

getting it published, Andy told the Voice: “When I was living in Pakistan at about four years old, I used to say to people ‘I’m Andrew Black and I’m an artist!’ I used to do cartoons too, but I don’t think I would ever publish those as some are a bit rude! “I had quite a lot of false starts, as I’m not as good with organising my ideas as a result of my stroke. I got 50 copies printed initially just to see what would happen, and I’ve just ordered another 100 for friends and family. It’s good fun and it keeps me off the streets too!

“Bristol After Stroke was really helpful to me after I had my stroke. I am more or less independent now as I have recovered so much, although I have a deficit in sensation on my right side, but can cope with that quite well with help from my wife. “My daughters are quite delighted that the book has been published, and my youngest daughter Devon has also written kiddies stories as part of her work, so she has definitely inherited the gene! The main thing for me is to raise money for

the charity, and I would love to sell copies to friends and family overseas too.” Sue is also extremely proud of Andy’s achievements since his stroke, and added: “He’s cycled the length of the Moselle river in France (2018), and from Bristol to Holyhead on Anglesey (2019), over the Welsh mountains, all on his folding Brompton bike. I go along too of course!” So far Andy has raised £400 by selling the book to family and friends. If you would like to buy a copy for £6.50, please email: hallensue@mac.com To find out more about Bristol After Stroke, visit: www. bristolafterstroke.org.uk

Herbert, the photo pioneer A NEW book has been published about the work of civil servant and enthusiastic photographer Herbert Almond Postlethwaite. Bristol’s Photo Pioneer: H A Postlethwaite is compiled by local author Veronica Bowerman, created with the help of two of his grandchildren, Sally Wellman and David Wilcox. Herbert was one of a select few photographers using colour technology in their photos in the 1930s. His work has resulted in more than 250 colour images of the City of Bristol taken just

before World War II. He lived with his family in the Bristol area from the 1930s until the 1970s. Employed as a Civil Servant, two decades of Herbert’s life were spent in Henleaze during the 1940s and 1950s. His all-encompassing hobby was photography. Herbert’s journey, over more than seven decades, covered black and white photos, cine and as well as colour photos dating from the 1930s. He won many awards and also contributed articles about his hobby to a wide range of

photography publications. The most numerous were featured in Amateur Photographer from April 1928 to August 1970. n NATURE

How you can help bring back more swifts Dave Peck, former teacher at Portway and Whitefield Fishponds, is a keen amateur naturalist and member of the Redland branch of the RSPB. He shares his tips with the Bishopston Voice to get more swifts nesting locally. THE screams of swifts are one of the delightful sounds of summer but, as with so many of our wild birds, swift numbers have been declining for decades. We know one of the key reasons for the decline: we maintain our buildings too well so there are fewer gaps and spaces in which swifts can nest. We can do something about this. There is a national campaign to make it a requirement for all new buildings to incorporate ‘swift bricks’. These are hollow nest box

Photo: RSPB

bricks. The link to the petition for this campaign is: https:// you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ save-our-swifts However, new buildings make up only a small proportion of potential nest sites so what can we do to make existing buildings swift-friendly? A web search gives companies that provide nest boxes for swifts (as well as other species). There are

also instructions for home-made and therefore cheaper alternatives. The swift boxes shown in the photograph were made during lockdown, the one on the right following the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) instructions and the other based on the design of the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds). Both were made using recycled wood (from pallets, an old bed

base and some skirting board), so the only cost was the screws! It looks as though we may have more lockdown and potential nest box making opportunities ahead, leaving plenty of time to fit them under our eaves before the swifts return in May. Both of my fitted boxes were occupied for the first time this year which certainly helped to lift the Covid gloom. Let’s get Bristol screaming!

Family’s appeals for information following asbestos-related diagnosis A MAN who has been diagnosed with pleural plaques and pleural thickening following exposure to asbestos has issued a heartfelt appeal to his ex-colleagues for information about his workplace conditions. David Charles March of Stapleton was informed of his diagnosis in 2017 after visiting his GP complaining of breathlessness and discomfort. A former carpenter, the 81-year-old who lives with his wife, Pauline, had worked at construction firm John Perkins and Son for most of his career between 1962-1993, having left school aged 15. Despite suffering from early stage dementia/Alzheimer’s, he can remember coming into contact with the deadly asbestos fibres during this time, and he has instructed industrial disease lawyers at Simpson Millar to investigate his working conditions, and whether more could have been done to protect him. Recalling his time at John Perkins, Mr March said: “I remember working on types of corrugated roofing. I would be covered in cement and asbestos dust and I do not remember being given any particular overalls. “I remember working on a job at the University of Bristol, which involved asbestos boarding the hearths or fireplaces. In cutting up the

asbestos boards, I would end up covered in white asbestos dust. “We were not given any masks and I can remember a fine white dust on my clothing and skin. I also completed jobs at Lloyds Bank and Frenchay Hospital in the mid-late 60s, both of which involved significant exposure to asbestos dust whilst I completed jobs as the carpenter.” Mr March’s lawyer, Helen Grady from Simpson Millar’s specialist industrial disease team, said: “If you worked for John Perkins and Son for any period of time between 19621993, please do get in touch as you may be able to provide vital information.” Helen Grady added: “Mr March and his wife, Pauline, have so many questions about how and when David was exposed to asbestos, and whether more could have been done to protect him. “While the dangers of asbestos have been known for many decades there are still, sadly, many people developing health issues such as pleural plaques and pleural thickening, because they were not made aware of its presence and provided with protective equipment.” If you have any information please contact Helen Grady at Simpson Millar via e-mail at helen.grady@simpsonmillar. co.uk or on 0345 357 9600.

The importance of keeping your gutters clear

G

UTTERS aren’t something we spend a great deal of time thinking about but are a very important part of the house as they exist to protect your home from rainwater. During a storm the rain runs off the roof into the gutters and down the drainpipes into the drains below. By doing this, your windows, doors and foundations are all being protected from water damage. Because they play such a crucial role in protecting your home, it is essential that gutters are kept clear of any debris that will prevent them from working effectively. Experts recommend clearing your gutters twice a year – in both spring and autumn. You should consider doing it more frequently if your roof is directly beneath trees or you live in an area prone to storms. It is important to do this piece of home maintenance as not clearing your gutters can lead to problems such as slippery walkways, or roof, wall, window and door damage. If excess water is not being channelled into the drains by your gutters, it can end up sitting on walkways and driveways potentially

55

creating a slip hazard. The formation of algae can make paths slippery, and in winter, water turning to ice can also make surfaces difficult to walk on. If your gutters are blocked then the water sits against the edge of your roof and can damage both the surface and underlying materials. Walls, windows and doors are susceptible to warping and rotting if they get damp, as they were not designed to sustain prolonged and direct rainfall. All of these problems can be avoided by hiring someone to clean your gutters twice a year. If you have someone to regularly maintain your gutters they should be

straightforward to clear. If it is raining and water is running down the side of your house then your gutters are blocked and you need a professional to clear them quickly. If you notice leaking or sagging gutters, be sure to get them looked at as soon as possible. Our handyperson service is set up to help with exactly this kind of home maintenance, and we have been helping people with their homes for over 30 years. You can completely trust our handypeople, who are all Trading Standards Approved. If you have any concerns or would like to book our handypeople to clear your gutters, please call to talk to one of our friendly experts on 0300 323 0700 for a no-obligation chat. Alternatively, you can email us at info@ wecr.org.uk and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Air ambulance charity opens charity shop BRISTOL’S local air ambulance service, Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), opened its first charity shop in the heart of Westbury-on-Trym to help raise vital funds for its lifesaving service. The local charity had a small and socially distanced ribbon cutting to mark the occasion, with Lord Lieutenant of Bristol and patron of GWAAC, Peaches Golding, and former patient of the charity, Sallyanne Haigh, doing the honours of opening the shop in Carlton Court, along with the charity’s other patrons, CEO, and Westbury-on-Trym Councillor, Steve Smith. GWAAC provides the critical care and air ambulance services for Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire, attending to over five patients a day on average. Its crew of critical care doctors and specialist paramedics has been ready to respond to those in urgent need throughout the pandemic, taking extra precautions and measures to ensure it can continue to deliver its lifesaving emergency care to local people.

Each call-out the crew attends costs about£2,000. Due to Covid-19 the charity has seen a significant loss in fundraising income, with events and face-to-face fundraising opportunities cancelled. The new shop, located in Carlton Court, will raise awareness of the charity’s lifesaving work in their local area plus the funds to keep them flying, ensuring that they can continue to be there for those in need. Anna Perry, CEO of GWAAC, said: “At the beginning of the pandemic, we decided that we should be as bold and as brave as our

clinical crews, who stepped up and worked on the frontline, putting themselves at risk. We decided to go ahead with our plan and open our first shop, based on a belief that organisations should invest in and support our high streets and local centres, that people need to shop local, shop independent and reduce our collective impact on the environment. “We wanted our first shop to be a flagship – proudly displaying our name to as many people as possible. We think this shop meets all our ideals.” The shop will be open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday. If you have any donations you would like to drop off, please do get in touch beforehand on retail@gwaac.com or by calling 0117 440 0700 so that staff can be sure to manage all donations appropriately in line with government advice and guidelines. If you are interested in volunteering for your local air ambulance’s new shop, you can find out more by getting in touch with the volunteer coordinator at Claire.harmer@ gwaac.com.

MW Funeral Directors go the extra mile A BRISTOL funeral directors is going the extra mile to enable people to pay their respects while there are restrictions on attending funeral services due to Covid-19. Routes to cemeteries and crematoriums are being planned by MW Funeral Directors of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, so that those prevented from attending a service or selfisolating can pay their respects. Hearses are able to stop at significant points where family members live, social clubs or sports grounds with mourners able to socially distance while paying their respects, and often applauding. MW Funeral Directors cover the whole of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and further afield, planning and directing burials and cremations to the individual requirements of families. Ella Abbott, funeral director, said: “It seems certain that sadly the restriction of a maximum of 30 people at a funeral is going to be with us well into 2021. We have always arranged

funerals in a truly bespoke way, to allow for personalisation and to meet the needs of the family and friends of the person who has died. “It is proving very difficult for some families to decide who should come to the service and how it will be organised and we have been working with them to find ways to ensure that the whole funeral and service honours the person who has passed away. “One solution is webcasting of the service, which is now very common, but even that can feel lonely and remote to someone who was very close to an individual. “One solution we have found is to put some more time into the journey to the service and work with families so that there is a timed route, often with pauses and stopping places where people can stand at the roadside or in a special place – such as a sports club – and pay their respects. “It is proving very comforting for families and makes more of an event before then they go to

their laptop or computer to watch the service.” MW Funeral Directors say it is important to work alongside families and friends of the deceased to put together a memorial that will live on in the hearts of guests for many years and this should not be curbed by the current restrictions. The team have organised funerals themed for special interest groups, such as bikers, environmentalists or animal lovers and for those of all faiths and of none. Said Ella Abbott: “There is a lot of flexibility around funerals. Sometimes cost can be an issue for a family so we keep our basic packages for a funeral early in the day when crematorium fees are low at £1,995 and there are even options for unattended funerals. “But in these difficult days it seems to be more important than ever for families to mark the event in a memorable way and we work with them to ensure that happens despite all the restrictions we all now face.”

n CRICKET

Delight as Jack Taylor signs extended deal GLOUCESTERSHIRE Cricket’s T20 captain Jack Taylor has put pen to paper on a new deal that will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2022 season. Jack led Gloucestershire as captain to a first T20 Finals Day in 13 seasons, although his side missed out in the rain-affected event at Edgbaston, falling to a six-wicket semi-final defeat by Surrey. He said: “I am thrilled to extend my stay here. Gloucestershire is my home club and it’s a huge part of my life. “I’ve also loved the opportunity to captain in this year’s Vitality Blast. I’m looking forward to what this team can achieve over the next couple of years.” Head coach Richard Dawson added: “It’s fantastic news that Jack has extended his stay at Gloucestershire. He’s been an important part of the changing room for a number of seasons and has shown solid leadership skills this season captaining the

T20 side.” The older of the Taylor brothers, Jack made his debut for Gloucestershire over a decade ago and currently sits joint sixth on the club’s all-time

T20 appearances list. He is also seventh on the club’s all-time T20 run scorers list with 1058 runs at a strike rate of 144.14. This season, he has added 130 runs so far at an average

henleaze&westburyvoice

of 26 while leading the team to seven group stage victories, securing a home quarter-final against Northants Steelbacks which Gloucestershire dominated to win by seven wickets. With eight wins in 10 matches, Jack comfortably has the best win percentage among Gloucestershire’s 11 T20 captains since the competition was introduced. Jack is the second player to have signed a contract extension following this year’s top T20 run scorer Ian Cockbain, who also signed a two-year extension. “A few years ago, we might have hidden behind the fact that we were a young team but we have kept a lot of those core players and now we are the senior players,” Jack said. “We’ve got a great group now with more youngsters coming through so I‘m feeling positive about what the future will hold for us.”
