Another closure for Westbury-on-Trym CONCERNS have been raised after the office at Canford Crematorium closed suddenly, the latest in a spate of closures to affect the residents of Westburyon-Trym and the surrounding areas. Henleaze and Westbury Voice was made aware of the closure by local resident Kevin Gummett, who spotted a sign on the crematorium’s office door on Sunday October 21, which stated that the office was closing permanently on Friday October 19 and advised residents to contact South Bristol Crematorium with their enquiries. Kevin said: “No apology was made and no explanation was given. I have expressed my dismay to the Mayor and await his response. “As I explained in my email to him, elderly people like me need to talk ‘face to face’ to someone at a time of bereavement. We are very uncomfortable, at such times, on a telephone – or worse still online!” In a letter to Westbury-onTrym and Henleaze councillors, a representative from Bristol City Council’s Cemeteries and Crematoria department advised that office/admin operations from two sites (Canford and South Bristol) were being merged into one at South Bristol in order to “support the office based staff team to be better able to cover the workload and help

to bring the systems and process that were diverging back into one.” In addition, the representative also stated that “there will still be a significant presence on site both for visitors to the site and those accessing services, as the Cremation and Cemetery team will still be operating from Canford.” Commenting on the closure of the Canford Crematorium office, Councillor Geoff Gollop said: “There appears to have been no consultation with relatives or visitors to the cemetery (and certainly not with local councillors), and clearly no recognition of the issues raised by visitors who are concerned about the general service levels.” Residents can discuss their needs by visiting the office at South Bristol Cemetery and Crematorium on Bridgwater Road, Bedminster Down, Bristol, BS13 7AS, calling 0117 903 8330 or emailing cems.crems@bristol. gov.uk

Regeneration is the name of the game THE newly formed Westburyon-Trym regeneration project committee met for the first time at the end of September, with a mission to fill the empty retail units, improve the security of businesses, bring in more shoppers, and set up a ‘Totally Locally’ shopping scheme and website. The project will be run by the Westbury-on-Trym Business Association (WOTBA), chaired by Amanda George, owner of We Make Bristol. Investigations are under way to find out what is happening with the empty retail units. It

was suggested that having a nominated person to liaise with the beat manager may help the police link crimes as their current system doesn’t do this. Approaches are to be made to butchers and fishmongers to see if they are interested parking up a mobile van, offering a new service to attract shoppers to the village. A weekly market has been suggested for Carlton Court but it is believed that the landlords had refused to give permission for this in the past. This is being investigated and alternative locations for a small market considered.

The project will be funded, hopefully, through sponsorship, obtaining grants and WOTBA membership fees. The possibility of the village getting any business improvement district funding will also be investigated. Amanda said that due to the scale of what the committee

wanted to do she would like to start on some smaller scale elements of the project that could be quick to implement and have an immediate effect on the area. Once these have been started they can then move on to looking at implementing ‘Totally Locally’ and working on the website.

n NEWS WESTBURY-ON-TRYM has once again triumphed in the 'Bristol in Bloom - Gardening for Bristol awards'. The village itself and Westbury Village Hall garden have both have been awarded Gold in their respective categories of: Best Shopping District and Best Community Garden. Chairman, Hilary Long said: "This will be the last year for awards because the Mayor has closed down the system from 2019 onwards. It will be left to individual communities to continue sponsoring their flowers and baskets if they wish, but without any title or recognition from the City itself. "However, residents and the business community can be assured that the society's team will make sure our flower displays continue next year, having been established from 1982 onwards by the previous committee under Roger Smith, long before the 'Bristol in Bloom' competitions started and extended to cover outlying a

n NEWS THE staff at the St Peter’s Hospice shop in Westburyon-Trym village have raised a staggering £2 million from sales at the shop in the 20 years that it’s been open - all money that goes towards covering the daily £19,000 care costs of the hospice. Manager, Mandy Gibbs, has worked at the shop for the past 15 years, after a successful career in set design. She began as a shop volunteer on an occasional Friday morning, took a job as a sales assistant and was promoted to become the manager within six months. Mandy said: “I still love it after all this time. Every day is different. You never know what’s going to come in through the door and that’s so exciting. “You really do have to go through every bag and never assume that things are just rubbish. I found a really sweet little dressing table set made of solid silver and ebony in one box of kitchen items that somebody had brought in. We sold that for £65. Another great item was a painting that turned out to be by a well-known Bristol artist which sold for £650 at auction.” Mandy has liked looking at things in antique shops from a young age and finds the internet to be a useful working tool to find out the value of items that are donated to the shop. “I like to think our shop is well-respected within the village. Raising money for the hospice is key to that in that we are a local charity, not a national charity. We always try our best with displays to make the most of our items as it isn’t a car boot sale. “Lots of people’s lives have been touched by the hospice and

Although most people know what the hospice is and where it is, they don’t generally go there so the nearest thing that people have to going to the hospice is coming to one of our shops. It’s key that customers have the same standard of customer service that they experience when they use the hospice. Every customer needs to feel welcome and valued and people will donate if they feel that we will make good use of their family items.” The shop on Canford Lane has been in existence for as long as the old inpatient unit has been at the Brentry site. Staff have been raising funds for the Room to Care Appeal which has been running for the past year to fund the building costs and fittings in the new, state of the art, inpatient unit. So far, £1,023 has been collected. What’s more, one man left an anonymous donation of £1,000 cheque in an envelope on the shop counter for the appeal! Women searching for festive frocks will be delighted to know that the shop is opening a special new ladies evening wear department on November 1st. Men are taken care of too with a new menswear section upstairs, along with a media department. More menswear donations are always appreciated. The shop won a national charity retail award in 2013 for the Shop Team of the Year, recognition that delighted

Minister's pledge on suburban rail network by Keri Beckingham PLANS TO improve rail services in our area have been announced by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) and the Department for Transport. Regional Mayor Tim Bowles recently met Transport Secretary Chris Grayling to discuss the plans, which include re-opening Henbury station, improving the Severn Beach line to provide direct services to Bath and Westbury, and implementing more frequent services to Yate. n NEWS THE eleventh Henleaze Christmas Festival is going to be as good as ever. Set for Wednesday 5 December there will once more be over 50 stalls, lots of entertainment, both in the Bradbury Hall and in an Outside Arena, and children’s rides. Festival Co-ordinator Jane Emery says: “We are delighted with the support we have had once again from stall holders and entertainers. It is going to be a wonderful community event. And most importantly, we will be raising money for five local charities.” The charities this year will be: Bristol Older People`s Forum, The Southmead Project, Caring for Bristol, the Stroke Association and Cintre (Caring for needy adults). Raffle tickets will be available on the night as well as advertised in local shops. Prizes include: A ride in a hot air balloon, a luxury hamper, a bundle of children’s books, Champagne, an electric toothbrush and lots of vouchers to spend in the shops. The evening will start at 4pm with the ever popular Show

Preparations begin for a fabulous Henleaze Christmas Festival Choir from Henleaze Junior School. Badminton School choir make their first appearance at the Festival and Redmaids’ High School return with their choir and bell ringing teams. The Panama Jazz Band also return to the Outside Area, as do the Salvation Army who will also be playing elsewhere around the Festival during the evening. The Hum and Drum Recorder Group, under their Director Penny Rawlings, will be showing what they can do in the Bradbury Hall. The evening will end with community carols from the Trinity-Henleaze Choir. Father Christmas will be making his appearance at the start of the evening and will then be open for visitors at the Grotto in Cardigan Road. And, the ever popular stilt walkers will be back towering over the crowds and high fiving anyone who can reach

them. Many local shops will be open for the evening (details in the programme which will be delivered to every home in the area in the days before the event). There will be no shortage of food and drink outlets - a hog roast and ostrich burgers will be among the food stalls on the night. With big crowds expected there will, for the second year running, be extra space for pedestrians in the stretch of Henleaze Road from the pedestrian crossing to the junction with Waterford Road. Jane Emery adds: “I am grateful for the small team of volunteers who work so hard to make the festival possible. Campaigner: Our golden goodbye challenge paid off BRISTOL City Council auditors now say that the golden goodbye given to former Bristol CEO Anna Klonowksi was “not a contractual obligation”. The official audit also shows that the payoff awarded to her was £98k, not the £70k previously thought. Henleaze and Westbury Voice readers may remember signing a petition, launched by local campaigner Graham Donald, asking for an inquiry into this payment. Graham says: “The auditors’ comments show that we were right to protest about this large payment and right not to be fobbed off by Mayor Rees.

“It seems that, contrary to what Mayor Rees said previously, this large payment was not required by the terms of Ms Klonowski’s contract. This drip feed of information is very disturbing – are there more revelations to come?”

Clive Hook’s brother Ellis was 18 years old when he was killed in an accident as he rode home from work on his motorcycle in 1968 in Stoke Bishop, Bristol. At that time organ transplants were rare in the UK and had never been carried out in Bristol or the south west region. Southmead Hospital had recently employed a transplant surgeon to set up a new service and Ellis’ parents made the brave decision to allow their son’s kidney to be donated. The recipient was a young mum at the time, from Bristol who became a greatgrandmother and lived until her recent death aged 75. October 31 marks the 50th anniversary of the first organ transplant at Southmead Hospital, and in Bristol and the south west region, and of course marks 50 years since Ellis’ death. Clive and his sister are organising a series of concerts called the ‘Great Big Kidney Thank You’ in Westburyon-Trym to raise money for Southmead Hospital Charity’s transplant fund and to mark this milestone. On October 31 and November 1 there will be three choral concerts – including a communion service - and a fourth all-day music festival on Saturday 3 November. Golf club raises funds for air ambulance by Keri Beckingham THE local air ambulance has thanked Henbury Golf Club for its fundraising efforts after being nominated as Captain’s Charity. Club captain Mark Wright nominated Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), providers of an air ambulance service for the people of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas, as his good cause for 2018 and has raised £18,221.09 so far. The golf club raised this sum through fining players, among other things, on the

Captain's Day which took place on July 21 and by hosting a Charity Day on August 17, where club members and their sponsors donated prizes for a raffle. A total of 42 teams took part in the day, with participants staying on for a dinner and raffle later in the evening, and Henbury Golf Club will continue to fundraise for the charity until March 2019. Mr Wright said: “GWAAC provides an essential lifesaving service from a dedicated team that continues to keep delivering consistently from raising its own funds and simply helping the public in desperate circumstances to preserve life.” Speaking on behalf of the charity, Joe Hughes, community fundraiser for GWAAC, said: “We have lots of history with Henbury Golf Club, this being the launch site of our fundraising appeal for a modern EC-135 helicopter in 2013, and benefiting from previous captain’s support. “We are so grateful to Mark and Andy for putting on such a fantastic evening, and of course to all of Henbury’s members and

Police warn residents Get set to be dazzled! over rogue traders A WEEK of events have been held to make residents aware of the risks of doorstep crime and scams. National Rogue Trader Week brings together police and Trading Standards officers across the country to tackle the issue of doorstep crime, which can include fraud, distraction burglary and trading standards offences. The week aims to target criminals and raise awareness of common scams and make sure communities know how to keep their homes secure. Rogue Trader Week 2018 ran between 8 - 13 October. Officers from Avon and Somerset Police spent time talking to residents and businesses in Henleaze Road, where they gave out copies of the ‘Little Book of Big Scams’ which gives advice on spotting and preventing fraud. The Mobile Police Station also visited Druid Hill, Stoke Bishop and Canford Lane so officers could offer crime prevention advice to residents including giving people ‘no cold caller’ stickers, and the neighbourhood team visited people potentially vulnerable to scams to make sure they had home security information. Thankfully, the force have only had one recorded incident of doorstep crime this year in our area. In May, a man called on an elderly lady offering to do some gardening work and stole cash from her home. Commenting on Rogue Trader Week 2018, Chief Inspector Sharon Baker, who co-ordinated the operation, said: "Rogue Traders are unscrupulous cold callers who offer to do work and ask for cash up front, carry it out to a poor standard or not at all, do work unnecessarily, or overcharge. "Though thankfully this doesn’t happen often, it does disproportionately affect older

people – who are more likely to be at home during the day – and can have a significant impact on their wellbeing as well as their finances. We've been giving information on avoiding these scams directly to senior citizens and asking people to look out for their vulnerable family and friends. "We teamed up with Trading Standards officers to carry out joint patrols across the area. As well as talking to householders where work was being done, we’ve stopped and checked out tradespeople in their vans, offering them advice on consumer law. Reputable tradespeople support our efforts to target the crooks who give the whole profession a bad name." Residents are asked to help protect any vulnerable relatives or friends by helping them to find reputable tradespeople and sharing police advice. This includes using a door chain, intercom or video doorbell/ viewer with unknown or unexpected visitors, checking identification, locking doors while you’re in your garden or another room, and keeping cash in the bank, not at home. In addition, if you’re unsure whether a visitor is genuine, don’t open the door and report it by calling 101, and if you feel threatened or intimidated, call 999 straight away. Getting from A to B in our city - or not? THE city council is keen to hear the views of people in Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym about their new Transport Strategy. A vision for improving transport in Bristol over the next twenty years has been launched in a bid to tackle congestion and transform how people move around the city. The draft Bristol Transport Strategy sets out how Bristol City Council plans to tackle challenges affecting journeys such as traffic congestion, growth in housing and jobs, inequality and health problems caused by inactivity and air pollution. Members of the public are invited to give their views on the strategy and choose their transport priorities for Bristol through a simulator tool, which outlines the pros and cons for a range of projects. Some of the approaches earmarked in the strategy which could help citywide movement include a mass transit scheme, such as underground or tram, better bus and rail services, safer walking and cycling routes and investment in technology, such as smart phone apps to help people plan journeys. Get set for fireworks fiesta Dementia organisation A FAMILY friendly fireworks fiesta is planned for the evening of Friday 9 November, organised by the Henleaze Infant School PTA. Sponsored by CJ Hole and Wards Solicitors, the doors open at the Park Grove entrance at 6pm, with the main display starting at 7.15pm. Bristol church sends record amount of relief to Syria THE church in Westbury Park in Bristol is thanking people for the amazing response to their annual appeal for refugees in Syria. They have sent the Samara’s Aid Appeal 233 banana boxes filled with new and good quality used clothing and shoes, bedding and towels, nappies, sanitary towels, wet wipes, incontinence pads and new hygiene items as well as a huge number of new hand-knitted items. They have sent 78 Smiley bags for children and 57 Dignity bags for women to help make their lives a little easier. On top of all of this there were 38 sacks of bedding, towels, clothes and shoes and 12 boxes with 300 brand new children’s cardigans in that were donated by an anonymous benefactor. Finally there were also seven Care Packs to help families in need, a wheelchair, zimmer frames, crutches and walking sticks, and a Moses basket. The church’s minister the Reverend Emma Langley said: “We are so pleased to be able to play a part in the amazing work done by Samara’s Aid and extremely proud of our local community who have excelled themselves this year with all they have done to make such a great result possible.” The church is enormously grateful to

all who have helped – sorting and packing clothes, labelling new hand knitted items, cleaning shoes, washing and ironing clothes, sewing on buttons and then loading the three vans that took everything to a farm in Somerset from where it was sent on its way to Syria on October 12. There were many volunteers from The Church in Westbury Park, other local churches, the fabulous local community, including Beavers from the 91st Bristol Beaver pack, Brownies from the 109th Bristol Brownie pack and The Good Gym. Transport was provided free of charge from Ben Spiller of Spillers Services - local Carpenter, Handy Man and much more; Mathias and Sons of Avonmouth who provide branded clothing; and C J Associates Geotechnical from Avonmouth who provide soil sampling. The cost of sending a container to Syria is £7,000 and through the generosity of so many local people the church has also been able to send nearly £2,000 towards the cost of getting this vital aid to those who are living in the most desperate of circumstances.

n NEWS IS it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s an old rowing boat dangling from the historic cranes outside Bristol’s M-Shed. This "oarsome" stunt was organised by junior members from the City of Bristol Rowing Club, to prove they are taking their ambitions to a higher level. The young rowers, who attend schools across Bristol, are desperate to replace their 20-year-old boat with a brand new racing scull. COBRC chairman Andy Wiberg said: “Our junior members wanted to grab people’s attention with this wacky idea. We have some real talent here, and, if we can buy a new boat, the kids will be better-equipped to represent Bristol in top national competitions.” Even though the club has been awarded generous grants by The Rowing Foundation and the Enovert Community Trust, a state-of-the-art boat can cost around twenty thousand pounds. St Mary Redcliffe School pupil Daisy Duffy, 14, said: “Rowing is the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m learning teamwork, getting fit and making new friends, but this boat is much older than ME!” Daisy and her friends have been fundraising with cake-sales and sponsored rowing events, but they still have a way to go. Volunteer crane-driver Chris Ecclestone said his team was happy to lift the 60kg boat. “We see these kids rowing up and down the docks in all weathers, so it’s nice to help out and

highlight their campaign.” The rowing club has members from across Bristol including Westbury Park and Henleaze and is part of Bristol’s Harbourside history. It was set up by dockers in the 1950s when the M-Shed cranes were being used to load trading ships. Six decades on, COBRC is a highly successful sports charity, which prides itself on its open and welcoming reputation. It recently set up a partnership with Oasis Academy Brightstowe in Shirehampton, to give more students an opportunity to try rowing.

Amazing resilience of Beauty and the Beast plane crash survivor THE school's Remembrance Day commemoration this year will be marked by the extraordinary personal story of former UK Special Forces Reserve Jamie Hull. Since we started we have raised over £10,000 for a variety of charities. REDMAIDS’ High School is fast becoming a key venue for music lovers. Not only has it recently hosted a sell-out concert for 500 people to see world-acclaimed violinist Nicola Benedetti in its own Redland Hall, it also now has its own ‘Orchestra in Residence’ in the shape of the popular Bristol Ensemble. The performance on 11 October saw Benedetti play alongside conductor Leonard Elschenbroich, as part of her second trip to Bristol in just over a month having starred at the opening of the new extension at St George’s Bristol. During her visit to Redmaids’ High, organised by the school’s flourishing Music Department, she held a masterclass for a group of its most talented violinists which was also attended by girls and boys from nearby visiting junior schools. At 31, Nicola is one of the most sought-after classical performers of her generation but, down-to-earth and warm in her approach, she addressed the whole school, sharing the values that have helped to place her at the top of her musical game. Aged just four when she herself took up the violin, incredibly she had reached grade 8 by the age of eight. Now, while continuing to perform all around the world, she devotes much of her time to music education and developing young talent. Minty, a grade 8 violinist at Redmaids' High, said: “I am passionate about the violin and work hard to improve with the help of my school teachers. To play for Nicola and receive her critique was so inspiring.” Nicola shared some heartfelt views with the students on music. “Expression in music always comes from something inside you,” she said, “an expression of the soul. It reflects our capacity for empathy, clarity, generosity.” She also encouraged them in their general education, saying:

n EDUCATION DOWNS Park Day Nursery in Westbury Park is celebrating 30 years of exceptional childcare. The converted Edwardian house on Downs Park West is the longest running nursery for children aged 0 to five years in the area. Owner and qualified teacher Deborah Munk started working as a child minder in 1986. As demand for Debbie’s care grew, she and her husband John decided to find a new house that could serve as a day nursery as well as their family home. In 1988, Debbie and John completed the redevelopment and Downs Park Day Nursery was opened. Over the last 30 years the nursery has cared for over a thousand families with one of the nursery’s earliest attendees chose the setting for her own children’s care. The nursery also enjoys welcoming back those they used to care for to do work experience. Reflecting on the nursery’s 30th anniversary, Debbie Munk said: “It strikes me that, while nursery education has and

Students learn skills that can save a life FOR the second year running, Orchard School Year 7 pupils have learnt how to perform CPR as part of the “Restart a Heart Day” campaign. Restart a Heart Day is a Europe-wide initiative developed by the European Resuscitation Council. It was launched in 2013 to teach members of the public how to help restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. The South West Ambulance Service spent the whole day at Orchard School and over 200 Year 7 students have learnt lifesaving CPR. Pupils watched an interactive DVD and learnt all the skills required to undertake CPR. The Y7 Orchard pupils learnt about how to keep a healthy heart – through sport, exercise and diet. They also learnt what a cardiac arrest is, and how to recognise the signs. “It was such good fun – I learnt loads and I now feel really confident about what to do if I see somebody in need of help,”

said one Year 7 Orchard student. “The Call-Push-Rescue phrase will really stick with me.” Every year, around 350,000 Europeans suffer an out-ofhospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). OHCA can occur anywhere,

for example in the street, at work, or while exercising or doing other strenuous activity. Unfortunately, the vast majority happen at home, where family members are the only witnesses and the only ones with the

Turning career ambitions into reality

STUDENTS from Bristol and South Gloucestershire secondary schools and colleges got a taste of their future employment prospects at Bristol’s most comprehensive careers event, Ambitions 2018. This year’s event, organised by SGS College and City of Bristol College, was part of the national ‘Love Our Colleges’ campaign. Ambitions, which took place on October 16-17, provides students with a unique opportunity to talk to employers, colleges, universities and training providers to discover the vast array of career and learning opportunities available - as well as learn about the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to excel. From hi-tech virtual reality applications to advanced medicine and healthcare,all pathways were represented. Dave Portingale from Rebuild Support said: “It never fails to amaze me on the herculean task of organising Ambitions every

year. It's an event that is truly valued by the schools and it has become a cornerstone careers event.” Stephen Barthorpe from Mitie Foundation commented: “I think that this was the best one I’ve attended over the years. .” Since its inception over 10 years ago, Ambitions has grown to become the biggest careers event for young people in the South West. This year’s event was home to over 120 exhibitors and was attended by more than 4,000 visitors. Photography club seeks new snappers THE North West Bristol Camera Club (NWBCC is keen to welcome new members at its meetings this Autumn. Club Chair, Neville Goodman, has some tips for taking your photography to the next level. Is taking good photos difficult? Of course, there are technicalities in photography: lens, shutter speed, and so on; they are important. But more important is knowing what sort of image to look for, what to put in, and what to leave out. The camera and all its features are secondary to that, because any camera will focus for you and choose the correct exposure, so the technicalities can come later. We often talk about some common “rules” we apply when we take photos. These rules were not invented by a committee of photographers. They came from the study of paintings, and why

some paintings appeal more than others. The rule of thirds is one you may have heard of. It simply means that the main subject of your image should not be central (common in most informal photographs), but should be (more or less) on an intersection of the lines dividing the image into thirds horizontally and vertically. This usually gives a more natural and interesting composition. Using leading lines within an image, especially diagonals, is another rule. These are lines in the image that lead the eye to another point in the image or, occasionally, out of the image. If you want a good example of how these two rules work, look at John Constable’s painting The Hay Wain: the cart is not central and faces along the diagonal of the river. This adds dynamism to the painting. There are lots of other examples you can find of

Tuning up for memorable Christmas music A COMMUNITY event designed to get both adults and children into the Christmas spirit is being held at St Alban’s Church. Fantasia on Christmas Carols by Vaughan Williams will be performed by Mezzo-soprano

THIS month's production of Goodnight Mister Tom by the award winning St Alban's Players features a cast of 30 local actors from north Bristol and beyond. Andrew Smith, from Stoke Bishop, takes the title role. Andrew, the son of the Player's co-founder Canon John Smith, has a long association with the Players and with notable past performances in Under Milk Wood and The Railway Children. George Christacos from Redland plays the young evacuee William Beech. A delightful third member of the cast is Stanley from Henleaze - Mr Tom's very friendly canine best friend. Jill Gill who directs the show says: "The Players have had many successes staging adaptations of the classics and I am delighted to be directing Goodnight Mr Tom with, a strong all-age cast including a real dog and a wonderful technical and backstage team. Remembrance Day concert Memorial Buildings to host commemoration

BRISTOL Chamber Choir will be presenting a Remembrance Day concert at 5pm on Sunday 11 November. The event will take place at The Chapel, St Monica Trust, Cote Lane, Bristol, BS9 3UN. Admission is free but there will be a retiring collection to raise funds for the Trust and the Choir. On this special anniversary year the concert will also commemorate the end of the First World War. The choir will be singing music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, William Harris, Edward Naylor, Carl Orff and two composers with Bristol connections. Cyril Rootham (1875 – 1938) was born in Bristol and his work at Cambridge University made him an influential figure

in English music life. His setting of Siegfried Sassoon’s poem ‘Everyone Sang’ will be performed by the choir. Raymond Warren (1928 - ) was Professor of Music at Bristol University from 1972 - 1994. HORFIELD Baptist Church will be commemorating this month's centenary of the ending of World War One at its own Memorial Buildings. The church's Memorial Buildings are next to the main church building facing Gloucester Road and incorporate the church's Fresh Ground Café. They were built in memory of those who served and the 39 men from the church who were killed in the First World War. The names of the fallen are recorded on a stone at the front of the buildings which were opened on 1922. The church is putting up a remembrance silhouette inside its Fresh Ground Café and adding 39 poppies to represent the church members who died. Further information and stories

about some of those church members will also be added. From November 5 everyone in the Bishopston area is invited to visit during café opening hours and purchase a British Legion poppy. This poppy can then be added to the silhouette in memory of someone lost in war from their own family, along with a name and other details if they wish. On Sunday 11 November Horfield Baptist's Remembrance Service will start at 10.30am outside the Memorial Buildings and continue inside the church after the two minute silence at 11am. Local choir celebrates 10th anniversary Vote for THE Redland Green Choir celebrates its 10th anniversary with a concert on 1st December at St Matthew’s, Kingsdown. The concert will feature Benjamin Britten’s St Nicolas Cantata, with a chamber ensemble and Rhodri Jones as soloist, together with some ‘greatest hits’ from the last ten years and a selection from Handel’s Messiah. Your Voice in Parliament I know that many of you will be bored of reading about Brexit, but now really is crunch time for the Government. That’s because, as part of the team that defeated the Conservative Government by four votes before Christmas 2017, I was able to secure a “meaningful vote” in Parliament on the future relationship between the UK and the EU after Brexit. That means I get to vote on whether to support the Prime Minister’s proposed deal

(when/if she gets one) or not. If Parliament and I don’t back the Prime Minister she will be forced to go back to the EU to get a better deal. If the Prime Minister fails to get her deal through Parliament she could be forced to call a General Election or a People’s Vote on the trade deal. Whether you support Brexit or not, I think most people agree that we need to know what the future trading relationship will be before we agree to leave (and before we pay the bill to leave). My current view is that, without clarity on that future trading relationship and how the Prime Minister’s deal will protect jobs and investment in the UK, I can’t support it. And following Labour Party conference, I’m pleased that my party’s position is now largely aligned with my own. Readers will know that I’ve stuck true to my word, and always put you and the country first even when that’s meant having to break my party whip. Thankfully, I can now do that and will do so with my Labour colleagues too. But this isn’t just about what I think. As your Voice in Parliament I want you to have as much access to the information as you’d like, and as many opportunities as possible to take part in the debate, to ask me questions and to influence how I vote. That’s why I’ve put on five public events (one online and four offline), including one at the Hub in Lockleaze, to hear directly from you. And it’s why I’ve delivered nearly 15,000 letters across Bristol North West and invited you to take

Your Champion in Bristol I recently accepted the privilege of becoming the Honorary President of the 2442 Air Cadet Squadron based in Westbury-on-Trym. I enjoyed attending a drill night in late August to meet the cadets and the team who support them, and joined the Squadron for their Annual Awards Evening held in September - it was inspiring to hear about the achievements and aspirations of young people from across Bristol North West. I recently held a talk with residents of St Monica Trust Retirement Home on Cote Lane. I was asked to discuss how I came into politics, getting elected and my first year in this rather unusual ‘Brexit Parliament’ which also happened to include becoming a dad. I also got to hear about the renovations being undertaken to the chapel from the Reverend Alan Cook and hear about resident’s concerns and hopes for the future. I know many of you are concerned about the number of vacant stores appearing on many of our local high streets. I’ve been following up on the old Lloyds Pharmacy in Westbury and, having realised Lloyds are keen to get rid of it, I’m now waiting to speak with the London-based agents for the landlord. I’ve also met with

Tackling incontinence manage to reach the loo in time, or find that you’re leaking without realising it.

NCONTINENCE affects around 1 in 10 people and can affect men and women of all ages. Sadly many people still consider it to be a taboo subject and, instead of seeking help, resign themselves to never getting any better. But this simply isn’t true – for most, it’s entirely curable. Debbie Harris, Bladder and Bowel service manager for Bristol Community Health, is on hand for help. What are the signs of incontinence? You might notice that you don’t

What are the causes? Incontinence is usually caused by the weakening of the pelvic floor – the group of muscles which support the bladder and bowel. This can be as a result of childbirth, age or being overweight. Incontinence can also occur following a spinal injury, cancer or as a side effect of some long-term medications. What can I do? • Ditch the caffeine: Highly caffeinated drinks can overstimulate your bladder – try (gradually!) switching to decaf. • Drink more water: I’m not joking! Drinking less fluid makes urine more concentrated, which irritates your bladder and causes it to spasm. This can make you feel like you need to go, even when your bladder is empty.

•M aintain a healthy weight: Being overweight can pull on your pelvic floor. By losing a few pounds you can reduce this pressure and improve your continence. • S trengthen your pelvic floor muscles: Contact the service, visit our website or take a look on YouTube to find simple exercises you can do every day to help build the muscle group. •H ave the right mental attitude: These things take time so don’t expect things to change overnight. Roll up, roll up for new circus skills class by Keri Beckingham YOUNG PEOPLE are being invited to learn how to hula hoop, juggle or even spin plates at a new circus arts class in Henleaze. The classes at Newman Hall are being run by Katie Hancorn, who was a nationally competitive dancer for nine years in Somerset, including majorettes, cheerleading and contemporary dance. After moving to Bristol she discovered Circomedia and began taking aerial classes while she was at college, and loved her classes so much that she declined her university offer from UCL and decided to undertake the BTEC diploma in circus arts and physical theatre instead. During her time at Circomedia, Katie experienced a variety of professional training from LeCoq clowning to Cirque du Soleil aerialists and decided she wanted to work in the teaching industry. In 2017, half way through her BTEC, she moved to the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York to be a circus coach at Long Lake Camp for the Arts. There, she had the chance to teach young people aged 10-16 everything from flying trapeze to Spanish web After returning to the UK in late 2017,

Katie wanted to carry on teaching young people and joined the Circomedia youth circus as a tutor. After finishing her BTEC with a triple distinction in 2018, she decided to create her own circus classes called “Circle

Arts”, choosing the name as she specialises in all things circles, aerial hoop, hula hoop and cyr wheel. Katie lives in Downend and has been involved in the Henleaze theatre scene for several years as part of BAOS (Bristol Amateur Operatic Society), which also runs out of Newman Hall. Her aim was to start bringing circus into more young people’s lives at an earlier age. She said: “I didn't know that circus and physical theatre was a viable career option until I had already decided to do a degree in English Literature. “Circle Arts is new but it is growing quickly as it is one of only two youth circus classes available in Bristol, and I began with a 5-11s class and after six weeks added a 1216s. The goal is to have both adult and youth circus classes running.” Katie’s classes take place on Tuesdays from 4- 5pm for 5-11 year olds and 5-6.30pm for 12-16 year olds. Each session costs £8 but she also offers a referral discount of £5 for a first session if a child or young person brings a friend with them. Homes, schools, buses we're making progress LAST month I delivered my ‘State of the City’ annual address. I enjoy the opportunity to speak direct to the city and I hope you saw, heard or read some details of the speech. In preparing for this, it was worthwhile and rewarding too look at just how much we have achieved in the two years since my election. I talked about how we have turned around the broken council we inherited, with a £30 million financial hole and a report showing a ‘collective failure of leadership’ to today when an independent review has concluded we are now fit for purpose and focussed on delivery. I also spoke about the way the city is now pulling together towards key priorities and working with city partners to deliver a city plan, city office and city fund that will transform Bristol beyond party politics and beyond the electoral cycle. But, most importantly I was able to reflect on the major initiatives we have already delivered on.

The Mayor’s View New schools and increased school places, exceeding our housing targets, the children’s charter, the talent pipeline projects, improvements to adult social care, the work we are doing on community cohesion and community development and on inclusive growth, so nobody gets left behind by the success of the city. On top of all that, I added some detail to our plans for the development of the Western Harbour, the housing and mixed use development of Temple Quarter and the redevelopment of Temple Meads station. And, if that’s not enough, I committed to do more to solve Bristol’s chronic transport problems that no administration has ever tackled. I talked about a new deal we were putting together with First Bus for a standard fixed fare

Men urged to talk about women’s cancers

OVER 21,000 women in the UK are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer every year* but awareness of symptoms is still very poor according to leading cancer charities. Now, as a follow on of Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, which ran throughout September, campaigners are calling on people to open up and discuss the subject – and they mean men as well as women. “Cancer doesn’t just affect the person with the disease – it affects everyone connected to that person - that means it is much more than just a ‘woman’s problem’,” according to Mr Amit Patel, a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynae-oncologist at Spire Hospital in Bristol. “Women and men need to be more aware of what is normal because this is the only way they will be able to tell when something is wrong. As with all cases of cancer the quicker it is detected the better the treatment outcomes,” he added. Mr Patel said: “The lack of basic

knowledge about the female body or conversations around how the female anatomy works, is very worrying – how can we expect what to look out for if we don’t know what is normal and what could be cancer. “A vast medical knowledge is not required to remain healthy. Being aware of and simply taking time to address any symptoms that could be associated with possibility of cancer can prevent or detect cancer at early stages.” The five cancers categorised as gynaecological in order of how common they are: Endometrial Cancer or cancer of the womb: Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom. If you have been through the menopause any vaginal bleeding is considered abnormal. If not then ‘unusual bleeding’ may include bleeding between your periods. About 8,475 new cases are diagnosed in the UK every year - most in women aged 40 to 74 who have been through the menopause. Ovarian cancer: The fifth most

common cancer amongst women in the UK with more than 7,000 women diagnosed each year. Because symptoms are not well known or often mistaken for as ‘tummy troubles’ or period pains, it is usually discovered in the late stages when successful treatment is much more difficult. Symptoms that may require assessment include weight loss, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, bloating, and bowel or bladder problems. Women should seek help if any of these symptoms are noticed particularly if they are persistent or progressive. Cervical cancer: Cancer of the cervix (the entrance to the womb from the vagina) often has no symptoms in its early stages. If you do have symptoms, the most common is unusual vaginal bleeding, which can occur after sex, in between periods or after the menopause. Abnormal bleeding doesn't mean that you definitely have cervical cancer, but it should be investigated by your GP as soon as possible. Also taking part in the

cervical screening programme is very effective way of preventing cervical cancer. Cancer of the vulva: The vulva is a woman's external genitals including the lips surrounding the vagina (labia minora and labia majora), the clitoris, and the Bartholin's glands (two small glands each side of the vagina). Symptoms can include a persistent itch, pain, soreness or tenderness in the vulva. You should also look out for ulcer, raised and thickened patches of skin that can be red, white or dark or any lumps or wart-like growths. Vaginal cancer: A rare form of cancer with around 260 new cases diagnosed in the UK each year. The most common symptom of vaginal cancer is abnormal vaginal bleeding although smelly or bloody vaginal discharge, pain during sex or pain when urinating can also be indicators, as can irregular or heavier periods. *Figures from Cancer Research UK

n PETER'S VISION THIS month I am pleased to say I’ve been enjoying the fine morning and evening rides to and from work. It’s sometimes a tad chilly in the morning I agree, and with the low sun avoiding the glare’s the obvious challenge, but riding home with the sun on your back is such a treat and more than makes up for the early chill. It’s also a visual delight as I have a shiny new pair of Ray-Ban prescription graduated polaroid sunnies to wear while I ride. Yes it’s true! Not only are they Ray-Ban’s but they’re also in my prescription so I can see and (try to) look cool as well. The joy does not stop there though. They’re also glare reducing polaroid and wait there’s more. They are also discretely graduated - meaning that the top of the lens offers full sun protection and the lower part of the lens is a little less tinted so you can also see where you’re going. Win, win win. Obviously I’m chuffed to have glare reducing optical correction that ticks every box and you can too. n BOOK OF THE MONTH WITH HENLEAZE & WESTBURY LIBRARIES Swansong

By Kerry Andrew Troubled soul, Polly Vaughan, has decided to run away from her life in London and recent unfortunate events to stay with her mother, Lottie, in the Western Scottish Highlands. She brings with her a litany of disasters; concern about the police calling for witnesses to the event that led to a Spanish student falling into a coma, the fact that she just flunked her last year at University and her rather awkward housing situation - which stems from her sleeping with her housemate’s boyfriend. The first person she comes across seems to be, rather disturbingly, in the process of dismembering a bird, and although she originally finds him a sinister character – she decides there is something fascinating about him and he starts to feature throughout the story and her life, despite warnings from other

villagers. Not keen to settle down to her University work and a staid stay in Scotland, she discovers the house owner’s drug stash and starts to smoke this, which combined with regular visits to the local bar start meaning that life is looking up for her. Polly soon becomes involved with a local barman, and his followers, which leads to a confrontation with a drug related hard man. There are a variety of writing styles here, going from the earthy language and attitude of the protagonist – to the descriptions of haunting apparitions and ghostly white shapes rising above the water, that appear to Polly whilst she is walking through the Scottish highlands. This novel – inspired by the folk ballad Molly Bawn, made me laugh out loud and wince – in equal measures, at the same time the description of the Scottish landscape is evocative. The first person narrative submerges you into the mind of Polly, and makes the story all the more real for it. This is an interesting novel, I personally feel the mix of styles worked well and it is difficult to define this book within a specific genre. If you liked Fleabag, the recent TV series, you will love this book. The author, Kerry Andrew, is a composer, performer and author. She has a deep understanding of folk songs, mythologies and oral traditions of these islands. This is her debut novel.
