Official visit to look at Downs Road and Canford Lane problems COUNCILLOR Kye Dudd (cabinet member for transport and energy) met local residents in Canford Lane and the Downs Road about road issues in these areas of Westbury-on-Trym. Local campaigner Graham Donald invited Councillor Dudd to see for himself the challenge of crossing Canford Lane amid the frequent traffic.Councillor Dudd visited both locations on 30 July and met and chatted with local residents. He agreed to consider whether a crossing on Canford Lane could be funded from monies allocated to the A4018 improvements. Councillor Dudd will arrange for a highways engineer to visit residents from the Downs Road and Great Brockeridge area to discuss their concerns about the lack of access to and from their homes if the current A4018 proposals are not changed. As reported in previous editions of the Henleaze and Westbury Voice, the proposed turning restrictions on the Falcondale Road/Westbury Road junction from Downs Road will impact residents living locally. Graham Donald said: “This was an encouraging visit and I felt that Kye Dudd was listening to residents’ concerns and keen to help. He now needs to follow up with some concrete action.”

Fundraising campaign launches for defibrillator in Westbury By Keri Beckingham A CPR trainer has launched a fundraising campaign for a new 24 hour public access automated external defibrillator (AED) in Westbury-on-Trym village. The village previously had use of an AED at the Victoria pub in Chock Lane, but after the pub was recently sold the donor relocated it to Kingsweston House. As a result Simon Brooke, who lives in Westbury-on-Trym, is currently trying to raise funds for a replacement defibrillator to be installed outside the Westbury-on-Trym Methodist Church on Westbury Hill. Simon used to be a volunteer community first responder for South Western Ambulance Service (SWAST), and attended a number of cardiac arrests during his nine year career. Speaking about his fundraising, Simon said: “I have been certified to teach CPR and basic life support. My experience has made me pretty passionate about CPR, and I think it’s essential that all communities in Bristol are aware of its importance. “Earlier this year I arranged free CPR

training sessions at the Methodist Church and we managed to train over 200 people. Immediate action from a bystander and early defibrillation are key to increasing someone’s chance of surviving a cardiac arrest. The survival rate increase goes from 1 in 10 to 3 in 10. “Although there is currently an AED at the men’s club in Westbury, it’s not that easy to access, and we need one in a prominent position in the village. If we can raise more money it would great to purchase more than one AED and have them strategically placed. I know that the previous donor of the AED at the Victoria is also raising funds for another for the White Lion pub too, and it will be great for the public to have several 24 hour access AEDs in the area.” Simon’s target is to raise £3,000, and at the time of writing he had raised £856. He is looking for members of the community and local businesses to support him, and if you’d like to find out more about his fundraising, visit: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ simon-brookes-4

Dambuster Johnny accepts cheque for RAF Benevolent Fund

Johnny Johnson accepted a cheque on behalf of the RAF Benevolent Fund in August. Johnny is the last surviving original member of No. 617 Squadron RAF and of the Dambusters raid and was honoured for his role in the WWII bombing raid in 2017. Emma Madge and her 15-year-old son, Cameron, cycled 100 miles from London to their home in Wiltshire and in doing so raised more than £1,000 for the RAF Benevolent Fund. Cameron was inspired to raise money for the Fund after attending a talk given by Johnny in Bristol last year. n NEWS A BUILDER from Westbury-onTrym has been given a suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of fraud at Bristol Magistrates Court. Robert Bees, trading as R and D Builders, was sentenced to a 26 week prison sentence in July, which was suspended for two years, for seven offences of fraud. He was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work, attend 12 days of rehabilitation and pay back all the money that his customers had lost. He was also given a Criminal Behaviour Order that prohibits him from offering or carrying out any services for garden or building maintenance for 10 years. Bees was warned that if he breaks any of the requirements he will be required to serve a prison sentence. He failed to attend his earlier trial hearing and so the court went ahead and heard the case in his absence. Bees took £4,950 from one

Fraudulent builder gets a suspended prison term homeowner who employed him to replaster and damp seal their house, install a vent in the bathroom and carry out roofing work. Had the work been done to a reasonable standard, an expert surveyor assessed the value of the work would have been £800. The court also heard that one couple was left with an unfinished roof on their house and what little work had been done by Bees was so poor that they had to pay even more money to get another builder to fix it. Cllr Steve Pearce, Cabinet member for Waste, Regulatory Services and Commercialisation, said: “Our Trading Standards officers work hard to protect

the rights of consumers in Bristol. The victims in this case have been left emotionally and financially scarred by the acts of this fraudulent trader. He has failed to show any remorse, continuing his unscrupulous activities when he knew we were investigating and failing to turn up to his court hearing. We would urge anyone who is thinking of employing a trader to work on their home to seek recommendations and ensure that you obtain a quote prior to the work commencing. People should also be wary of paying large sums of money upfront.” Bees evaded the Trading Standards officers and their

colleagues during their investigation. Even after he had been arrested and interviewed, he still carried on taking money from home owners and not completing the work. In all cases investigated by Trading Standards, Mr Bees failed to give cancellation rights or the necessary information (such as business details) to his customers. Anyone who has concerns about a trader that has been employed or needs advice about their rights, should contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service for guidance.

n NEWS By Keri Beckingham

A LOCAL councillor has shared his views on the proposed expansion of Bristol Airport ahead of a decision being made by North Somerset Council in September. At the end of 2018 the airport submitted plans to boost passenger numbers to 12 million by 2026, enlarge its terminal, create 3,900 more parking spaces through a multi-storey car park, build a bus and coach station and make improvements to the on-site road layout. In addition, it has also requested for there to be a change to the seasonal restrictions on night flights, so that by 2026 an additional four flights would be run a night during the peak summer season. As the airport is not served by trains and the majority of passengers arrive by private car, local residents close to the airport have expressed concerns that the expansion would worsen traffic problems in the area. In addition, more than 2,000 objections to the proposals have

7

Bristol Airport expansion decision prepares to land been received. However, Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees has given his support to the plans, stating that they will boost the economy and secure thousands of jobs. Sharing his views, Steve Smith, Conservative Councillor for Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze said: “I support the airport expansion, which is crucial for jobs and growth not only in Bristol but across the South West. Of course the airport and the airlines that use it must carry on their businesses as sustainably as possible, but refusing the expansion would

simply export emissions (and the jobs and growth that go with them) elsewhere, which helps nobody.” James Collett is one of the hosts of Extinction Rebellion Bristol North, which started five months ago. The group meet at the Hall at 160 Gloucester Road (Pigsty Hill) on Tuesdays from 6.30pm, where members bring vegan food to share, and discussions then take place from 7 - 9pm. James is concerned about the airport’s aim to be a carbon zero airport, and said: “A group of us recently went to Bristol Airport’s AGM, where they presented their road map to reduce carbon emissions and to be a net zero airport. Although they have a very glossy brochure, it actually just refers to the emissions that they have direct

control or influence over, such as the buildings in the airport and a certain amount of the cars they use for the airport grounds. There is nothing to do with planes or travel to and from the airport, and in our opinion it’s a fairly misleading piece of greenwash, which we have pointed out. “We are concerned about all the extra pollution that the airport expansion will generate, especially as Bristol Airport is virtually the only airports in the country that doesn’t have trains running to it, and 87% of people therefore go to and from the airport by private car, which adds massively to congestion and road pollution.” To find out more about the airport’s plans, visit: www. bristolairport.co.uk/about-us/ who-we-are/our-future

Activity centre for disabled children proves By Keri Beckingham A POP up activity centre for disabled children in Kingsweston has helped families who may be unable to access most mainstream leisure facilities. Gympanzees was created by Stephanie Wheen, a physiotherapist who supports disabled children in Bristol. After being regularly told by parents how little there is for their children to do outside of school as a result of their disabilities, three years ago she came up with the idea of building and running the UK’s first dedicated activity centre which will cater for the play, exercise and social needs of 1 million children and young people in the UK. In order to prove that there is a need for an inclusive activity centre in the UK, Gympanzees started running temporary pop up activity centres over the summer and Easter holidays in

2018 following a crowd-funding campaign which managed to raise £150,000. However, they still need to raise another £140,000 to cover pop ups for the next three years. The social enterprise held

their third pop up at Kingsweston School from Monday July 29 – Friday August 23, where they transformed the site into eight areas including two sensory rooms, a disability-inclusive gym, indoor and outdoor playgrounds,

Thangam Debbonaire MP meets Gympanzees creator Stephanie Wheen soft play, a music room, and trampolines. Overall the pop up welcomed over 1,800 visitors and families travelled many miles to get there, including one family making the trip from Greenwich - which

highly popular demonstrates the massive need for such settings. Thangam Debbonaire MP for Bristol West visited Gympanzees over the summer and was able to witness the smiles and laughter as well as friendships forming between children and parents alike. During the pop up, one boy (who has only ever managed to cope with a day out for 20 minutes) stayed and played at Gympanzees for three hours. Another boy and his mum shared their first ever experience of trampolining together, and one parent commented that Gympanzees was the only place she felt she could take her daughter during the holidays. Speaking about the success of the pop up, Stephanie Wheen said: “Many more magical moments were shared with siblings able to play together, something that is often not an easy reality for these families.” Stephanie previously told the

Henleaze and Westbury Voice that Gympanzees are looking to raise £7m for the main centre and will either build something from scratch or a buy a property for refurbishment. She also added that it will be located somewhere on M4/M5 corridor. On Sunday 8 September Gympanzees are holding a Move It My Way inclusive fundraiser at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex for those with or without disabilities. During the fun day there will be music, activities, sport challenges, games, soft play, trampolines, stalls, a tombola and a raffle, a second hand clothes and toys sale as well as face painting, with all funds raised going towards their future pop ups. New course to help parents of children with autism PARENTS of autistic children are being offered a new training course which explains how to better understand and help their child. Community organisation Bristol Autism Support is launching a course for parents of children who are waiting for a diagnosis or who have just been

diagnosed. What Do I Do Now? is running at Lawrence Weston Community Farm on Mondays from 11am-1pm, the six-week course can accommodate up to eight families and begins on September 9. Currently, parents can join the long waiting list for local

authority-run courses only after they’ve received an official diagnosis. It takes around 18 months in Bristol to receive an autism diagnosis, but support and training is needed when parents first realise their child may be autistic. Kate Laine-Toner, from Pill, set up Bristol Autism Support

when her daughter Emily, now nine, was diagnosed as being autistic and Kate could find very little useful information. She said: “The course covers ways to help your child and manage challenging behaviour, how to get help with school issues, what benefits you might be able to claim and what support is available in Bristol. “We end by talking about how to go forward as a family with this as your ‘new normal’. For example, how to go on holiday and attend family events without them becoming overwhelming for your autistic child.” Places on the course cost £60 for the first member of a family and £20 for subsequent members and can be booked at: www.bristolautismsupport.com/ wdidn

n NEWS by Theresa Roche PATRICK Dickman, 31, of Westbury-on-Trym, was singing in the sky as he carried out a fundraising Solo Accelerated Freefall from an aircraft at 15,000 feet in aid of three-yearold Buzz Rowswell's potentially life-changing medical treatment in Panama. Patrick grew up in Bishopston, where he enjoyed attending St Bonaventure's School and where he still likes attending St Bonaventure's Church on Sunday evenings. Little Buzz suffers from Kernicterus, a condition caused by untreated jaundice at birth. When Buzz's parents, Vikki and Glen Rowswell explained that the National Health Service has refused to fund stem cell therapy which could repair the damaged tissue in his brain, Patrick, quite literally, decided to "jump" on the Buzz's Battle fundraising campaign! Originally scheduled to do the skydive on June 7, Patrick was gutted when he arrived to find that his jump had to be postponed due to inclement conditions and frustratingly, these continued in July. He had to wait until 1 August to take the plunge but when he finally jumped it, he felt it was a blast. Patrick described how he felt as he left the aircraft: "I was buzzing with excitement and I thought, 'Buzz you would love this right now'.” Although Patrick was overwhelmed by the rate of the descent he also explained how he started singing in the sky, "I believe I can fly" by R Kelly. Two experienced skydive instructors jumped with Patrick

Chorus in the clouds for Buzz

and his primary instructor observed Patrick, at 6,000 feet, pulling the ripcord for the parachute to open. Patrick said: "I felt like Peter Pan flying through the clouds at 120-125 mph and was thinking about Buzz the majority of time. The experience was surreal.” The jump lasted five to six minutes from leaving the aircraft to finding flight pattern and the landing area situated at the airfield where Patrick's instructors were watching his descent. "The jump surpassed my expectations and I felt totally at one with the surroundings," added Patrick.

The experience has encouraged him to carry on with a further skydive course. Over £1,555 was raised by Patrick for Buzz, a perky little chap valiantly battling pain on a daily basis, who will have a better life expectancy if he can get to Panama. Patrick sends his heartfelt thanks to all the kind folk who have contributed, including Morgan Beddoe Estate Agents in Clifton who contributed upon reading in the Voice about Patrick's fundraising initiative. Dementia singing group seeks recruits By Keri Beckingham A SINGING group for people living with dementia is looking for new members to come along to their sessions in Henleaze. Alzheimer’s Society’s Henleaze Singing for the Brain meets every first, third and fifth Thursday of the month at Trinity-Henleaze United Reformed Church, and offers people living with dementia and their carers a space where they can meet new people in a friendly, fun and social environment. Supported by a dedicated team of volunteers in partnership with the church, the sessions are based around the principles of music therapy. This includes vocal warm-ups as well as singing a range of familiar songs suited to those attending. Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading dementia charity. They provide information and support, fund research, campaign to improve care and

create lasting change for people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Research by the charity shows that 850,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia, and by 2021 one million people will be living with the condition. Speaking about the sessions, Alzheimer’s Society’s Group Coordinator Sophia Simlat said: “For some people living with dementia, spoken response can become problematic. Sometimes it’s impossible to find the right words to express how you’re feeling. “At Singing for the Brain, we often find people retain musical memory even when problems with speech and wordfinding present themselves. The familiarity of a melody can allow someone to sing words they would have found difficulty in speaking alone. Music can give someone back a way of expressing themselves. “Just as important is the chance to spend time with

other people in similar circumstances. The service is designed to help people with dementia to feel part of society where they have the right to artistic and social stimulation. “We look to find out which songs might be special to someone or remind them of a specific time in their lives. Music can be a very personal thing, whilst also bringing people together. There are real connections and friendships being made between the people attending.” Sharing his experience, one gentleman with dementia who attends the group with his wife said: “We love coming here, the people are so nice. We have a giggle and get to know people. It’s so easy to sit around and do nothing. This gives us a nice afternoon.” His wife added: “He remembers coming here. He couldn’t remember if we were

married but he remembers coming here!” A carer who also attends with his wife said: “The singing is so useful for us. It’s a medication.” His wife added: “The friendliness of the volunteers is brilliant.” Henleaze is one of five Singing for the Brain sessions running in Bristol. Other local groups currently run in Westbury-on-Trym and Horfield. For more information and to book a place, please contact Sophia Simlat at Alzheimer’s Society by calling: 0117 961 0693.

Tough Mudder raises vital funds AN enthusiastic group of runners ‘threw themselves into it’ to raise funds for the Henleaze and Westbury Park Youth Group. The competitors were taking on The Tough Mudder, a legendary physical and mental challenge. The event took place at Badminton on August 17 and attracted many local runners, including Phil Radford, one of the founders of the youth group, and chairman, Revd. Mark Pilgrim. Liz Radford explained: "There were 39 people who took part and they raised over £11,000 for the youth group, which is just amazing! “Many had to overcome fears of heights, electrocution, under-water tunnelling and an ice bath, to name just a few of the obstacles they tackled during the 10-mile run.” The youth group has been established in Westbury Park for ten years, meeting at the

Methodist Church in North View. The committee have been looking at ways to continue and grow this project for our local youth. They would like to be able to expand activities for the older group, provide a permanent helper for Rhian who runs the older group and fund a paid leader to run the younger youth group. “A particular thank you to the Bristol Port Company, who paid all of the event costs and match funded the first £2,500 the team raised,” added Liz. The team have done an outstanding job of fundraising so far and if you would be interested in supporting the cause, their fundraising page is at: www. goldengiving.com/fundraisingteam/BPCmuddersYESYOUTH PROJECT For more information or to enquire about local young people joining the group, please email lizradfordis@virginmedia.com

n EDUCATION FROM September, boomsatsuma will be delivering a series of taster sessions and eight-week courses that are free to women and girls in Bristol. The aim of the courses is to encourage and inspire women and girls to explore career possibilities in the creative and digital sectors as part of the WIDJET project. As delivery partner, boomsatsuma is offering courses in Creative and Digital Media, Games Design, Visual Communication and VFX and Virtual Reality and AR. Free courses for women and girls interested in digital careers mothers and BAME females. To help increase access to the courses, boomsatsuma is also offering a contribution to the cost of child care. West of England Mayor, Tim Bowles, said: “One of my key ambitions is improving job opportunities across the region. I want to ensure that everyone, regardless of background or personal circumstances, can access support to develop workplace skills so that they can fulfil their potential. “Digital and tech is an important part of the West of England’s economy – businesses have a particular need for skilled employees now and this demand is expected to grow in the future. Women are currently under-represented in digital roles and our WIDJET project seeks to tackle this by working with a wide group of women to

encourage more representative and inclusive employment in digital roles across the region.” boomsatsuma Creative Projects Manager, Lyndsay Davies, said: “Our involvement in this project has allowed us to shape a series of beginners courses that are for women and run by women. “We want to be able to offer all participants the opportunity to learn new skills, develop their

understanding of the industry, and hear from professionals already nested within it. “We recognise that taking new leaps and learning new skills can be daunting so we’re keen to support women and girls to explore new possibilities in a safe, encouraging space.” For more information or to sign up go to: https://www. boomsatsuma.com/women-indigital

Students' hard work pays off Pupils across North Bristol nervously opened their results on August 22 after two years of hard work studying for the new, more rigorous, GCSE exams. Most courses are now marked using a numerical system rather than the traditional A - G method. GCSEs are graded from level 9 - 1. Level 4 is a pass and equivalent to the old grade C, level 5 is regarded as a 'strong' pass, level 7 equals an A grade and levels 8 and 9 mark exceptional achievement in a subject - the previous A* grade. REDLAND Green School has seen an increase in GCSE results this year for all groups of students, including those who have overcome challenges. The provisional headline figures show that 89.3 per cent of students achieved the Basics (English and maths at level 4+), with 73.1 per cent achieving a strong pass - level 5 and above. A third of students (33.5%) achieved the top levels (9-7) in both English and maths, with 91.4 per cent of pupils awarded a pass in English (levels 9-4) and 91.9 per cent in maths. 39.1% of pupils achieved the EBacc (Maths, English, Science, a language and either History or Geography) with a standard pass. New headteacher Louise Blundell said: “Having seen our young people grow and develop since their first day with us in Year 7, and those who have joined us along the way, it is with great pride that I look at what they have achieved and

Louise Blundell, second right, with students at Redland Green School appreciate what a privilege it has been to watch them grow. Not only have they worked so effectively as individuals, but also as a team to support each other. Their achievements are, without a doubt a testament to their hard work, effort, resilience and determination to succeed. “As part of the Gatehouse Green Learning Trust our staff have been revitalised and had a chance to develop their practice through working with other schools, this has had benefits for encouraging and retaining some of our excellent practitioners.”

Orchard blossoms ORCHARD School Bristol continues to thrive with impressive GCSE results. There were 122 top grades achieved across all subjects. in Filton Road, Horfield did especially well in English, Science, geography and languages. Headteacher Julia Hinchliffe said: “Our pupils have demonstrated real commitment and resilience, working so hard for their GCSE results. There are many personal triumphs within these results, with some pupils reaching multiple top grades and others achieving passes beyond their wildest dreams.” They included Maryam Tariq from Horfield who is off to Colston’s School after passing eight GCSEs with top grades. Fellow student, Alfie RylattGreen, passed all nine GCSEs with 8s in biology and history.

Best GCSE results yet at Bristol Free School BRISTOL Free School is celebrating record GCSE results this year with 83 per cent of students achieving a level 4 and above in English and 79 per cent attaining the same level in maths. English and maths grades for a quarter of all students were at the top levels of 7-9. The average grade for students taking separate sciences was a 7, with many students achieving 8s and 9s; this continues the school’s excellent reputation for STEM subjects. There has been outstanding progress across the curriculum, with students showing particular flair this year in drama, business, RE and languages. BFS students continue to be successful at gaining the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) qualification with 44 per cent

of students achieving this. Susan King, headteacher, shared her pride in the success of her students and teachers, saying: “Progress made by all students is extremely high this year. I am equally proud of the students who have reached the highest standards in these new, more rigorous GCSEs as well as those who have overcome barriers to reach their full academic potential at our school.” Individual success stories include Esme Hearn who passed ten GCSEs, nine at grade 9 and one at grade 8 and Abby Foster, who achieved ten GCSEs including six grade 9s and two grade 8s. Students who have made amazing progress during their time at BFS include Farhat Ahmed who achieved nine very strong GCSE passes.

BGS salutes pupils' many strengths BRISTOL Grammar School pupils achieved remarkable results in their GCSEs. Headmaster, Jaideep Barot, said: “At BGS, it is the character, skills and habits of mind that our pupils develop which are most important to us, and it is in these areas that we judge our successes. We hope, of course, that as a by-product of the excellent education we provide, our pupils perform well in public examinations – by which we don’t mean simply a string of top grades, but rather that each pupil performs to the best they thought they could – and perhaps better. “More than the collective successes which normally and understandably grab the headlines in our league-tableobsessed culture, it is the success of those individuals who have worked hard to achieve what they have, that we salute today.” Across the 27 subjects offered,

80% of GCSE entries were graded at A*–B (or the numerical equivalent of 9–6) with over twofifths at A* or 9–8, and 63% at A*–A (or 9–7). 30% of our pupils gained ten or more grades at A* and A, and 22 of them achieved ten A* grades or more. Pupils fared well across all areas of the curriculum. In the humanities (English language, English literature, geography, history and religious studies) over 90% of entries were awarded A*–B (or 9–6). Over half of the year group (77 pupils) were awarded grades 9 or 8 in maths, and the same proportion achieved the same feat in English Language. Three-fifths of those who took the Further Maths GCSE achieved an A*, including five pupils who gained the highest possible Distinction grade. 25 pupils achieved a grade 9 in both maths and English language.

The qualification, which is co-taught at Redmaids’ High by Dawn Clark who trained at the Royal Ballet School with Darcey Bussell, involves a written exam plus practical assessments covering choreography, group and individual performance. Ms Clark, a professional dancer for 15 years, said: “Dance in all its forms is hugely popular with all ages. It is a wonderful subject to take as it maintains physical activity which is so important for general health, and stimulates creativity, teamwork and confidence.” Across all GCSE subjects, 46% of students were awarded a level 9 or 8 (previously A*), while nearly a quarter (24%) scored the top 9 grade. Almost two thirds (65%) of entries gained 9-7 grades (formerly A*-A grades). In addition to notable performances in Music, Russian and German, where 100% of

n BADMINTON School pupils are celebrating another set of excellent GCSE results with an impressive 41 per cent of all grades at 9 – the highest level. Over 40 per cent of all girls achieved straight 9-7 and almost a third of the year group straight 9-8, while every girl sitting GCSE Further Maths achieved the top grades. At the same time as studying for her GCSEs, Orla, from Bristol, gained a

promotion to Sergeant in the Air Cadets and has led the way by achieving her blue flying wings. Meanwhile Scarlett, from Bristol, has won a place at the National Youth Theatre plus straight 9-7 GCSE grades. Scarlett, Amelia, Riana, Nimesha, Emma and Katie from Bristol and Jenny from Hong Kong, who gained great results, worked on an article on superconductors published by Physics Education.

Individual success came for many girls, including a number who achieved straight 9s in all subjects. Maths lover Saskia, gained ten grade 9s plus the highest mark of A^ (distinction) in further maths, Lily, from Westbury-on-Trym, also with ten grade 9s and an A* in further maths, is considering a future in engineering, and History lover Grace, from Redland, who also gained ten grade 9s and an A* in further maths. We care for every individual at our happy, thriving school

Justin Humphreys, Head of St Katherine’s School St Katherine's School, Ham Green, BS20 OHU

ST Katherine’s is a thriving, diverse school community that has educated pupils from all over Bristol for many years. Indeed, Year 7 pupils from over 50 primary schools are joining us this September. So why do so many parents and carers choose St Katherine’s for their child’s secondary education? I believe it’s because our approach is based on the belief that, as individuals, we all perform at our best when we feel confident, secure and valued. Along with my committed team I am passionate about giving every pupil an environment where they feel safe and happy so they can achieve their full potential. We do this through our exceptional pastoral care and absolute commitment to wellbeing which

makes St Katherine’s such a happy, thriving school. We take full advantage of St Katherine’s size to create a friendly atmosphere where every child is well known and cared for as an individual. Like our pupils, our staff are energetic, passionate and committed professionals, who stretch and challenge our young people both inside and outside of the classroom - we all learn something new everyday and it enriches and improves us all. Besides our track record of academic success - our GCSE, A level and vocational subject results have improved every year for the last six years - we offer a broad curriculum alongside extracurricular activities designed to develop our pupils in to

young adults equipped socially and academically to take on the opportunities and challenges of life. Above all, a St Katherine’s education is busy, inspiring, ambitious and great fun! Come along to our September open evening or one of our autumn open mornings (details below) to experience it for yourself.

A-levels really are the gold standard STUDENTS from Bristol’s schools and colleges are starting new adventures at university and in apprenticeships and jobs this month after receiving their A-level and vocational results. Both independent and state-run sixth forms and post-16 providers saw their young people notch up some impressive outcomes after two years of study. North Bristol Post 16 Centre The sixth form college is a comprehensive collaboration between Cotham and Redland Green Schools with over 800 students studying a wide range of Post 16 courses. Over half of students taking A-levels achieved a B or above, with 59 North Bristol Post 16 Centre students achieving 3 or more A/A* grades and over 80% of Level 3 BTEC entries achieving a merit grade or above. Young people who studied French, further maths, film studies, maths, economics, photography, physics, English literature and fine art at the North Bristol Post 16 Centre have done exceptionally well, with more than 70% of students in these subjects achieving a B grade or higher. Students have also been very successful

in enhancement courses which are studied alongside their main BTEC or A level courses. These include the Level 3 extended project, Pre-U Global Perspectives Research, and a one-year core mathematics qualification. More than 250 students will be taking up a place at university, with more than half moving on to a Russell Group establishment. Special congratulations go to 14 students who take up their places at Oxford and Cambridge universities, and to a further nine who move on to medical school. Other centre students have taken up places on higher level apprenticeships, art foundation courses or are pursuing employment opportunities in a diverse range of settings. Bristol Free School In the second year of A-levels at BFS, 62% of all students achieved at least one A*- B grade and 27% achieving three A*- B grades. BTEC vocational courses also performed exceptionally well, with the average grade being a Distinction*. 96% of all students who applied for university, accepted places onto their chosen degree courses. Notable individual student successes include Matthew Ghosh

who achieved four A*s and has accepted a place at St Anne’s College, Oxford to read mathematics. Izzy Phillips was awarded two A*s and an A and will be studying medicine at the University of Birmingham. Callum Bryan, Christophe Hooper, Harry Moss and Daniel Whetton achieved all A* and A grades in their exams. Jack Payne was awarded two A*s, an A and a B and achieved the best progress of any student. Max Cramer achieved three A*s and a B. Turn to Page 30

n EDUCATION From Page 29 Colston Girls’ School V6 Colston’s Girls’ School launched its new, co-educational Sixth Form Centre in collaboration with Fairfield High School last September under the name V6. This year’s A-level results were outstanding with many exceptional individual performances. 22% of all grades were A/A*, with an overall average A-level grade of B-. Maths and Fine Art scored particularly well, with 19% of Maths students and every Fine Art student gaining an A*. A further eight subjects saw students achieving grades between A* and B. The new Head of Sixth Form, Caroline McClean, said: “I am incredibly impressed by the exceptional individual

achievements of those with perfect A/A*s, but equally proud of those students who have made considerable progress in the Sixth Form, for example, one of our Bristol Scholars, Amina Jimale, who achieved A*AC will now read Psychology at the University of Bristol.”

Students have won places at some of the most competitive university courses, including three going to Oxbridge and twelve proceeding on to study Medicine.”

BCCS

Students at all-girls’ Redmaids’ High School are celebrating an excellent set of A-level results, with almost a fifth of all entries gaining the top A* grade, and

Bristol Cathedral Choir School congratulated all their A-level students for achieving outstanding results. From a cohort of over 200 students, 38% of all grades are A* or A, 69% A*-B and 87% of grades are A*-C. Headteacher Paul Atkins says: “All of our students can be very proud of their achievements these are our highest headline figures at A-level. “Impressively, 43 students achieved three A grades or higher. Students achieved notable success in Art, Chemistry, German, Music, Latin and Textiles with 100% of grades at A* – B grades. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Pioneering apprentice PCs

W

ITH the school holidays over, I’ve been reflecting on the exceptionally busy summer we’ve experienced. From the Extinction Rebellion protests that caused traffic mayhem in and around Bristol to wonderful events including Glastonbury, Pride and the Harbourside Festival, the police have worked really hard the last few months to keep our communities safe. I know officers will always go above and beyond to support such events and I want to say thank you to all those individuals and teams who have been involved for your hard work. I’m sure you would have also heard about our new Prime Minister’s promise to recruit 20,000 more police officers to make our streets safer. This is a commitment that I very much welcome. We’ve had to deal

with years of funding cuts and had to make £78 million worth of savings, all while protecting officer numbers wherever possible and dealing with increasingly more complex and serious crime. If the Prime Minister keeps his promise, it will ease the pressure on officers and teams in our area as well as improving outcomes for victims. Local people often say to me that they want to see more officers in their villages, towns and cities and an increase in numbers would reassure our communities and keep our streets feeling safe. Avon and Somerset Police is in a great position in terms of learning and development opportunities for new recruits, especially with the launch of the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Accredited by the College of

Policing and launched this year, the PCDA is being rolled our across the country. Avon and Somerset Police is the first force in the South West to move its initial police learning to the PCDA, partnering with UWE to offer a rewarding learning experience to our new recruits as well as a starting salary of £20k. Apprentice officers will spend around three quarters of their time learning on the job and the rest studying or in the classroom, becoming familiar with the skills they need to do the job. This is a great opportunity for individuals to pursue a varied and interesting role as part of the force, while gaining a qualification at the same time. Local people deserve the best officers on our streets to keep us safe and the new apprenticeship prepares, trains and supports officers to deal with the complex

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens crimes they will face as part of their role. I also hope that the new training and the opportunity to gain a higher education qualification will encourage a wide range of people who might not have considered a career in policing to apply and make a difference to our communities.

Smugglers: rogues or local heroes? THE National Trust holds a monthly talk on a Saturday at 2.15pm in the Hall at St. Monica Trust, Cote Lane, Westbury-on-Trym, BS9 3UN. A charge of £3 is made to both members and visitors to help cover the costs associated with the talks programme and includes the provision of tea and biscuits at the end of each talk. The autumn programme begins on Saturday 26 October with the Bristol Industrial and Fine Arts Exhibition 1893. Set up in the centre of the city this was Bristol’s answer to the Great Exhibition of 1851. Mike Hooper’s presentation will cover the construction of the temporary exhibition hall and explore the exhibits, which were intended to educate the public and promote local trade and industry. Colin Andrew presents An 18th Century Smuggler on Saturday 23 November. Smuggling was a widespread activity during the 18th century, shaped by the society of the time and involving a running battle between the smugglers and the preventive men. Were the smugglers rogues or local heroes? Probably both – they were certainly enterprising. December Delights on 14 December is presented by the ever popular Terry Merrett-Smith who, with his able assistants, will treat us to a programme of readings, music and film – truly a December Delight! a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

Celebrating ten years of campaigning for older people JUDITH Brown, who has been chair of Bristol Older People's Forum (BOPF) for over a decade, stepped down from the post at the Forum's AGM on 25 July. She has been a highly effective campaigner for the rights of older people throughout that time. BOPF is a charity that has almost 3,000 members and has played a vital role supporting older people (over 55s) in Bristol for more than 25 years. Whether it's about better health care, improved and more accessible public transport, or cleaner air, BOPF has campaigned tirelessly, under Judith's leadership, often in partnership with other groups in the city. The good news is that Judith will now be a BOPF Ambassador, a role that she says she will relish: “I have loved every moment of leading BOPF, working with so many people, older and younger, across the city, and now look forward to my future role as an Ambassador.” Henleaze resident Ian Bickerton, is moving up from his role as deputy to become the new Chair of BOPF.

Previous workshops have been attended by 160 singers. Feedback on the event has been very positive with one participant saying: “I had the most uplifting and enjoyable day at your recent Choral Day. Having not sung since sixth form I was a little anxious, but the whole afternoon was led so expertly, and the general ‘bonhomie’ of the participants was a real delight.” To take part contact Sarah Hunter on 07870 208789 or email sarah@theyews.net. Workshop - £18 to include afternoon tea.

Help us tackle loneliness on your doorstep Volunteer Community Supporter – Ruth Why did you get involved in the project?

I wanted to be involved in something that supports isolated, elderly people. We put a lot of effort into getting into old age in society, but we don’t really as a whole, support people in the right way. So I think projects like this are fantastic.

What’s different about Neighbours Connect Southmead?

There’s so much red tape around various things that you do in life. When you can actually sit down and have a cup of tea with someone – it’s so genuine - you can really make a difference to their day.

What do you enjoy the most?

The stories can be fascinating and hilarious. You’re getting a completely different insight spending time with somebody completely new. Building up that relationship is really rewarding in itself. To find out more about how you could volunteer for Neighbours Connect Southmead, check out our website www.southmead.org or contact Letty on 0117 950 3335 or lettyanderton@southmead.org.

HOW many people in your street won’t speak to another person today? Perhaps more than you think. With two out of five older people saying that television is their main source of company, loneliness and isolation are a real problem in our changing communities. Neighbours Connect Southmead is a new local initiative which matches volunteers with the most isolated individuals in our community to spend time with them. The impact that it is having on the lives of people already involved in the project is huge. For those who struggle to leave their home a volunteer can open up their world. Playing a game of cards, doing a bit of gardening or just having a cup of tea together can be the highlight of their day. For those who are more mobile, volunteers might support them to get out and develop their confidence to try new things.

n FROM OUR MP

Time for more Brexit Briefings Your Voice in Parliament Parliament has been in recess during August, so I have taken the opportunity to enjoy a couple of weeks of family time while keeping abreast of the government’s seemingly incessant push for a no-deal Brexit. I’ve always been clear about my position on Brexit: it’s bad for our country and our city. A no-deal outcome - where practically all of our trade deals are cancelled overnight - will cause generational economic damage and put us at the mercy of a Trumpendorsed trade deal with the United States which can’t match our current trade with the EU. Analysis has shown around 1,400 jobs could be lost in my constituency alone if we leave under a no-deal scenario. I have continued to meet local businesses and unions, from small local businesses to global multi-nationals with a presence in or around Bristol. I simply can’t vote for a weaker British economy, reduced security cooperation, and financial hardship for local workers, businesses and public services. The good news is that my one vote, on your behalf, has already changed British history. We’ve avoided potential no-deal outcomes with a majority of just one vote in the House of Commons. Who your MP is and how they vote on this defining issue has never been more important. As I promised in my 2017 election address: I have been consistent in campaigning and voting for a public ratification of what we do next (a so called People’s Vote). I

will continue to try to secure that public vote and, if successful, I will campaign to remain. In seeking to achieve these outcomes I’m happy to work with any politician, and any constituent, regardless of their party affiliation. To ensure I continue to hear your views and answer any questions you have about Brexit as we approach the 31st October deadline, I’ll be hosting another round of Brexit Briefings in October. These will be advertised on my website (www.darren-jones.co.uk) and my Facebook page soon. If you’re not online and would like details of the events, please call my office on 0117 959 6545. Your Champion in Bristol I’ve also been using time during recess to contact residents across Bristol North West with updates on some of my work in the constituency including the A4018, North Bristol Transport Plan, Stoke

Lodge and climate change. I hope you found this update useful. Tackling Climate Change remains high on my agenda - I recently met with local members of Extinction Rebellion to talk about their campaign and will also be hosting my own ‘Climate Emergency: Conversation’ on 14 September at the Eastfield Inn. If you’re interested in coming along (there’ll be time for a discussion, Q and A as well as a short update on my environmental work), please book via www.darren-jones.co.uk/ contact/cafepolitics or call 0117 959 6545. I have also been in touch with YTL – the potential developers of a new arena in Filton – as they prepare to submit their planning application to organise an exclusive meeting, which I’ll chair, for residents to attend. We’ll have time to review the planning application, ask questions from the project team and have a quick look

Darren Jones column around the hangars. The meeting will be held early evening on Friday 4 October. If you’d like to come please get in touch. As always, if you have any questions or need my help just drop me an e-mail, call, write to me or message me on my Facebook page. To chat in person, pop along to one of my coffee mornings or pub politics events (my next pub politics will be in Westbury-onTrym on 20 September) or ask me a question during my Wednesday night Facebook Live Q&As from 19:30. All the details can be found on my website at www.darrenjones.co.uk/contact/cafepolitics You can also find me on Facebook at fb.com/ darrenjonesmp, on Twitter at @ darrenpjones or sign-up to my monthly newsletter at www.darrenjones.co.uk/sign-up. Inheritance Tax Planning – Lifetime Gifting

C

HARGEABLE lifetime gifts (i.e commonly transfers of assets to discretionary trusts) which exceed an individual’s available nil rate band are subject to IHT at the lifetime rate. The available nil rate band is broadly the standard nil rate band of £325,000 reduced by any earlier chargeable lifetime transfers made in the previous seven years. For example, Janice sets up a discretionary trust (a chargeable lifetime gift) for £250,000 on 1st April 2016. A few months later she sets up another discretionary trust for £100,000. Ignoring any

available annual exemptions, because the total of these two gifts amount to £350,000, the excess of £25,000 over the standard nil rate band of £325,000 would immediately be subject to IHT at 20%. It is important to bear in mind that even in cases where there is 100% nil rate band available for transfer, each individual can only use their own nil rate band for the purposes of chargeable lifetime transfers before any lifetime IHT would become payable. So in the case of Janice, let’s say she was able to benefit from

a total nil rate band of £650,000 made up of her own nil rate band and 100% transferable nil rate band from her late husband John. For the purposes of any lifetime chargeable transfers she could only settle up to £325,000 into discretionary trusts without being subject to immediate IHT as shown in the above example. Following on from the above example, let’s say Janice made an additional outright gift to her niece in May 2017 of £200,000. As this gift is a Potentially Exempt Transfer (not a chargeable lifetime transfer) there would be no lifetime IHT payable at the

time she makes the gift. Richard Higgs, Chartered Financial Planner, provides friendly financial advice in BS9 on a face-to-face basis in a welcoming location at 50, High Street, Westbury on Trym. How to get in the bath safely

F

OR a lot of clients that I see, getting in and out of the bath can be a real struggle – this could be because of a health condition or just being less able than you used to be. Throw water and wet surfaces into the mix and you can have quite a risky situation on your hands. If there is no one else home when you are bathing, this can cause even more concern. There are various options for increasing your safety when getting in and out of the bath. These could include: A simple grab rail on the wall for you to hold onto for support and reassurance A bathboard sits over the top of the bath (secured by adjustable brackets) and allows you to sit down whilst transferring your legs into the bath – some people also use this to sit down whilst

showering A bath lift allows you to sit in the water – you transfer onto the seat and transfer your legs into the bath, then you use the electric hand controls to lower the seat into the water and bring you back up once you’re finished. The best solution for you depends on your personal capabilities and your own bathroom layout. (For example, a bath lift is not usually suitable for use in a corner bath. Or if you can’t lift your legs, a bathboard won’t help). You should give your circumstances some thought before choosing any equipment. Some people decide to redesign their bathroom. The safest option is usually to remove the bath and install a level-accessshower. Some are reluctant to change their bathroom as they think it won’t look inviting, but

there is a lot of choice available in fixture and fittings. The benefits of a level-access-shower include: Reducing the risk of falls by not having to clamber over the side of the bath A level-access-shower means you can walk straight into the shower – there is no step to lift your feet over, which again lowers the risk of having a fall You may want to have a seat installed so you can sit while you shower yourself – for those that experience tiredness, this may save you some vital energy Increasing your independence - you might need a carer to help you have a bath, but having a shower might mean you can manage this without any help If you need any further advice on choosing equipment for the bath, or if you’d like to see how we can help with adapting your

n NEWS FROM METRO MAYOR

Local Industrial Strategy will benefit us all I HAVE recently been in touch with our new Prime Minister and new government ministers to update them on the progress we’re making and what we can do to deliver more for the West of England. I am always championing our region and I’m confident the government will see that we’re making a real difference, investing to improve where we live, with ambitious schemes such as our MetroWest rail plans which include seven new train stations. I have long been a supporter of devolution because I believe local people who live and work in the region are best placed to understand and respond to the challenges and opportunities that we face. I am pleased the new Prime Minister has signalled that he would like to give more powers and investment for local towns, cities and regions to spend on their priorities. I look forward to exploring how this can

benefit the West of England. On July 19 I was delighted to join regional business, academia and council leaders for the launch of the West of England’s Local Industrial Strategy. The Strategy sets out how we will work towards raising productivity levels and create high-quality, well paid jobs across the West of England. This Strategy is a blueprint for the region which will enable us to showcase our strengths

and ambitions with both the government and businesses looking to invest in the region. To boost productivity and strengthen our economy, I am determined to ensure that everybody can get around the region with good transport connections, and that people have the skills that businesses need. This, coupled with building enough well designed and affordable homes, will help ensure that we continue to

be one of the country’s most attractive and prosperous places to live and work. At the heart of our Local Industrial Strategy, we are connecting businesses, researchers and residents together to drive innovation and test new ideas which will improve peoples’ lives every day. I want to ensure that the innovation, ingenuity and creativity that the West of England is worldfamous for, can be harnessed for everyone. I am working hard to deliver this agenda by prioritising investment in transport infrastructure and skills. I look forward to using our Industrial Strategy to secure investment from government and businesses to further boost our local economy and create new, well paid jobs which benefits everybody working and living in the region. n MAYOR'S VIEW

We have to build a city where all can thrive

O

UR city is a great place to be over the summer with free cultural festivals and historical attractions not only bringing citizens but also visitors from across the country and beyond. In the past few months, we have seen engaging and exciting events including St Pauls Carnival, Bristol Pride, the Harbour Festival and the International Balloon Fiesta. But the nights are drawing in and many of us will be going back to school or work after a well-earned break. However, this transition is challenging for some. And knowing how to handle change is critical, especially for our young people. Having worked in the NHS in mental health and wellbeing, this is and continues to be a key priority of mine. Bristol has a higher than national average rate of residents with mental ill health. This is a devastating reality and one that I am not willing to ignore. I want to ensure that we all thrive in a city that supports both our physical and mental health. Part of achieving this is promoting mental health and

General Building

wellbeing with a focus on early intervention. Crucially, our schools, colleges and universities must play a role in enabling our young people to grow into resilient and confident adults. Our daily lives may sometimes be stressful. Ensuring young people have skills to cope with this is key to preventing more serious issues in later life. The first steps involve helping them see how to talk openly about their feelings and care for themselves and others. But I will continue to push for improvements to accessing mental health services; promoting and creating positive, fun and challenging opportunities to help children and young people develop their confidence, creativity and resilience. Thrive Bristol aims to improve mental health and wellbeing of all, with a focus on those with greatest need. The programme launched city-wide in 2018 and takes a One City approach to tackling shared challenges. Targets include eradicating mental health

stigma and discrimination, rolling out Mental Health Awareness training, and creating mentally healthy schools, workplaces, homes and communities. In fostering an environment where it is safe to speak about feelings and by building our capacity for resilience, I hope our children of the future and today will find the summer to school transition an enjoyable process.

With over 20 years' IT experience, he helps users, particularly older people, get what they want from their PCs, tablets and smartphones. He is also a web designer/ builder, photographer, father-of-two and keen sportsman.

Three words to save your life A NEW app has hit the market that just perfectly sums up all that is clever and useful about smartphones. It’s already helped a large number of people and undoubtedly saved lives. Like many great inventions it’s a simple concept, brilliantly executed. The App is called “What3Words”, it’s free, and it helps you pinpoint and share an exact location using everyday words. The developers have mapped the entire planet and divided it into 3 metre x 3 metre squares. Each square is assigned

three random words that never change.

-0.19552100. This translates into ‘filled.count.soap’.

Open the app and it immediately locates you to a 3m square, wherever you are on the planet. Tap on the square and you’ll see the three words that pertain to that 3m space. Anyone given those three words and the app, can locate that exact spot by typing in the words. It’s so much easier to communicate a location than by using co-ordinates. For instance, the exact co-ordinates for the office in my house is – 51.520847,

It’s already being used by the emergency services to locate people lost or injured, in forests, on mountains, out at sea, etc. It’s also being used by the UN and the Red Cross to deliver aid to exact locations. Just tell them your three word location and they can pinpoint where you are to within ten feet.

Chandos Rd Festival - a great way to round off summer THE popular Chandos Road festival returns on Sunday 22 September 22 from 12 midday to 6pm. Promising to be better than ever, all are welcome to come along to this festival in Redland for an afternoon of music, entertainment for all and a wide range of delicious refreshments. Organised jointly by the local traders and Chandos Neighbourhood residents, there will be plenty for everyone to enjoy at this relaxed, familyfriendly event. Fi McVey is one of the festival organisers and says: “Chandos Road is blessed with a wide variety of restaurants, cafes and bars, so you can expect an eclectic and unbeatable variety of street food to suit all tastes, from delicious curries and tapas, wonderful cakes, yummy ice creams to ever popular fish and chips. Our local hostelries will be open for business, with Chums

hosting a beer festival over the weekend.” This year, there will be lots of stalls with several local charities and the University Community Liaison Office represented. There’ll be bric-a-brac galore, vintage homeware, clothes and pictures, pottery and crafts and much more, including a yoga demonstration. Entertainment for the younger generations includes face painting, imaginative craft activities run by Emma at Atelier, puppet shows, clay workshops and not forgetting the ever popular Stomp Rockets – more fun than you can possibly imagine from recycled plastic bottles and an inner bike tube! To complete the festive atmosphere, there will be music along the street all afternoon, with a DJ at The Good Measure to get the ball rolling. Outside Snobbys at Cowper Road, the acoustic stage will feature

Bangers ‘n Smash (samba band), Duo 41 (fast and furious folk), Break Out Voices (a community choir guaranteed to lift the spirits) and a host of others including nepali melodies, sea shanties, jazz & blues, witty ditties and more. At the main stage by Lansdown Road, the afternoon kicks off with the funky, energising Riff Raff Choir, followed by SOL (French café jazz), Nightlarks (classic 50s/60s soul & jazz). Expect the unexpected when Random Numbers take to the stage with their covers with a twist, Love

Butter - an energetic and wacky, great local student band and to round up the afternoon, local favourites the rocking country blues band ‘the Harrison’s Trio’, will get toes tapping with their seismic covers from the likes of the Eagles and The Band. It’s a great way to round off the summer, so make it a date in your diary!

n BOOK OF THE MONTH WITH HENLEAZE & WESTBURY LIBRARIES Company of Liars by Karen Maitland THIS intriguing story is set against the backdrop of the black plague in 1348. A group of raggle-taggle travellers, all ‘outsiders’ in a way, are trying to escape the ‘pestilence’ (as it was known at the time), bound together by fear and circumstance more than friendship. Each person in the group conceals a sinister secret or hidden motive, and the power-shifts between them slowly unfold throughout the novel. Terrifyingly, as each person’s secret is discovered, it uncannily appears to lead to a death… The characterisation is expertly written throughout and dramatic tension is seamlessly blended with the drudgery of life on the road and the rough dwelling places they are forced to inhabit. Are they being stalked by a killer, and if so, is it human (the result of earthly corruption and greed), or something supernatural…? This novel keeps you guessing right until the very end.

The pacing is perfect and the story has enough ‘down time’ to make it believable, and yet plenty of eventful moments to keep it engrossing. The imagery created in the mind of the sights and smells of the landscape are very vivid. A particularly disturbing chapter sees the company witness people taking shocking measures in the belief that they can save their community. The writing also perfectly conjures up less obvious horrors; the description of the silent atmosphere of a plague-hit village particularly haunts the imagination. Between 1348 and 1350 the Black Plague would kill over 1.5 million people, over one-third of the population of England. One graphic testimony can be found at St Mary's, Ashwell, Hertfordshire, where an anonymous hand has carved a harrowing inscription for the year 1349: "Wretched, terrible, destructive year, the remnants of the people alone remain." Company Of Liars perfectly illustrates this feeling of the world ending, of unstoppable annihilation, using the prevalence of superstition at the time, as well as some very modern-day moral dilemmas. The book is well researched, and brings the indiscriminate horror of this particularly brutal period of history, and those doomed to inhabit it, vividly to life.

The making of a gardener “GOOD to know the influence of Stephen King on one horticulturist!” tweeted author Mike Manson following the ‘Books That Made Me A Gardener’ event at Redland Library. The horticulturalist concerned was Matthew Bufton, garden manager of Bristol Zoo Gardens, one of a panel of horticultural experts invited by Friends of Redland Library to talk about the books that had most influenced their lives. Joining Matthew were: Rod Pooley, from Bristol City Council Plant Nursery; Sara Venn, Founder of Incredible Edible and horticulturist; Andy Bryce, collection manager, The National Arboretum, Westonbirt. Matthew explained he had chosen Stephen King, because his novel It was “the first book I read that wasn’t forced on me by school.” Matthew’s interest in horticulture was nurtured by David Attenborough’s Life on Earth, but the book that encouraged him to think around the subject is Vista: The Culture and Politics of Gardens by Noel Kingsbury and Tim Richardson. For Sara, who has been gardening since she was three years old, it was Geoff Hamilton’s The Ornamental Kitchen Garden that “sparked my interest in growing good and my interest in organics.”

n PETER'S VISION

Changing fast

I

GENERALLY think that we humans don't like change, but there are times when change happens whether we like it or not. The global political & economic scene is a great example here, but don’t worry, that’s the last time I mention politics. I would say that in general I’m happy embracing change. If you’ve read this blog before you probably know that I like new things - high tech equipment, the latest lighter, thinner & clearer lenses and particularly new glasses & sunglasses!

Often the biggest change this time of year is back to school. We’ve no new schools in our house this year, but certainly new classes & new teachers for our three to look forward to meeting! It’s a good time of year to remind all you parents & grandparents that eye checks for young eyes are highly recommended, at least once a year. It always surprises me to read that only around 25% of us take our children for eye checks (yes, I have seen all the young eyes in our house this month!) but 75% of us take our children for dental checks. In general most children can see well and normally. We do still see those who have just assumed that their blurry eyes are normal and that no one else sees any better. Until your children have an eye

We're online too!

check it’s hard to be sure they’re seeing clearly. Of note are children who report words moving, jumbling or going blurry - these need careful assessment as glasses aren’t always the answer. Sometimes coloured tints or eye exercises are needed. Come and see us for a thorough assessment and advice if you or your child have any concerns, even if you’ve already had a sight test. One change I do enjoy is my transitions - glasses that darken in the sun. Being out and about more with my family they are definitely an easy option. Taking just one pair of glasses leaves a little more room in my rucksack for snacks too! I know glasses that change in the sun aren’t for all of you, but if you’d like to try them we offer you a love them or leave them exchange

guarantee. You & your family, however young, are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care and glasses - whether you like your lenses to change with the sun or not! To arrange an extended eye exam or frame style consultation for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

n INSIDE OUT

I

F you’ve ever watched daytime TV or had a pint in The Old Duke you may well have already seen the face behind the Bristol Upholstery Collective brand. A vision in her signature teal and red hair, Leigh-Anne Treadwell is the driving force behind the award-winning upholstery company, and often appears on the BBC show Money For Nothing, transforming items recovered from the tip (and used to manage the pub). Besides undertaking upholstery projects for private clients the BUC team run a range of different

classes and courses for students looking to accomplish one chair refresh or even change career through an accreditation programme. Although being on TV has caused a huge growth period for BUC, it was surprisingly difficult to even start up the enterprise in the beginning. Acquiring affordable space with a shop front was vital for achieving Leigh-Anne’s vision of a hands-on craft business with an emphasis on wellbeing, and a supportive, collaborative community at its heart.

“Without any credibility - only a business plan, and projections of an idea, I just didn’t seem to capture any Landlords’ interest to take me on as an ambitious tenant,” explains Leigh-Anne. Eventually a workroom in Old Market became available and “after a year of repeatedly pitching my idea, I had 24 hours to make my decision to take on the space. I remember thinking it’s not what I had envisioned, but it was a start!” After a whirlwind inception BUC outgrew the premises and moved to Wells Road where the next step is to launch a statement chair shop, so if you are looking for something to add wow factor to your home, or fancy learning new skills, you can join in with the action.
