Exams successes hailed THE hard work and resilience of local teenagers has been reflected in a good set of exam results, despite the challenging process to get to this point. Uproar followed A-level results day on August 13 when it was revealed that about 40 per cent of results had been downgraded by Ofqual, the regulator, which used an algorithm to award grades. After a government U-turn it was announced that A-level and GCSE students in England would be given centre-assessed grades calculated by their teachers and would only use the standardised grades if these were higher. Results for vocational qualifications are yet to be published as the BTec results are now being reviewed. Education round-up: Pages 19-31

A PUBLIC consultation on a proposal for a 2.3m loop path on the Downs has been launched by the group behind the annual Cycle Sunday event. The proposal has been co-developed with the charity Greenways and Cycleroutes. It includes a zebra crossing on Stoke Road near the Water Tower to improve access to the Downs, and traffic calming along Circular Road, which will take the form of speed tables that are designed as continuous raised crossings. In addition, accessible paths will also be created from Stoke Road to the Sea Walls, some of which will be built on an existing route over well trodden grass. There will also be a new path to replace the narrow and uneven one alongside Ladies Mile, and the paths will be 3m wide and designed to be wheelchair, buggy, scooter and bike friendly. Vicki Cracknell set up Cycle Sunday in 2015. Speaking about the plans, she said: “Since 2015, families and less confident cyclists have come to Cycle Sunday events to safely explore the Downs by bike. Our events have demonstrated a huge interest in cycling around the Downs, with over 3,000 participants at our last event. That’s where we started from, but this is about more than just helping children learn to cycle. “We’ve spent a lot of time designing this route keeping everyone who uses the Downs in mind. This means there is a strong element of compromise in this proposal. “With its 400 acres of beautiful flat parkland, the

Downs is such a special place. By creating accessible paths for leisure and exercise and encouraging considerate use of them, many more people could enjoy the area. “We are looking for a solution that provides a smooth, even surface that would mean that people could arrive by bus at

Coronavirus cases on the rise in Bristol

Covid testing site open BRISTOL'S first city centre Covid-19 testing site has opened at the Victoria Rooms near the Clifton Triangle. The first walk-through testing site will help residents get a free test as quickly and as easily as possible if they develop symptoms of coronavirus. Located in the car park at the University of Bristol’s Victoria Rooms, 88 Queens Road, anyone with symptoms, however mild, can get a free swab test that takes less than a minute. Tests should be booked or ordered as soon as symptoms begin at nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119 and results arrive the next day.

BRISTOL’S mayor is advising residents to take heed of a recent rise in coronavirus cases. Marvin Rees said 35 new cases were recorded in the past seven days, which was “up from 10 before”. Mr Rees called the rise “inevitable” and served to emphasise that Bristol could not take its success in keeping Covid-19 cases low for granted. He said: “We should not be prematurely overconfident in our performance around Covid because we’ve done well in the past. There is increased risk as people are more mobile, they’re moving around … they’re socialising, they’re going on holiday, coming back from holiday. “All these things will be playing out into cases of Covid. “It’s not that there is a real bad situation here. What we have

here is what was inevitable. “It just emphasises the case that we cannot take our success for granted.” Mr Rees reiterated the threat of Covid remained but said “our numbers are still low and these have levelled off”. “The key thing is that we as an area have our outbreak recovery plan in place and that we can identify any new cases, understand what’s going on, surround them, isolate them and make sure they don’t take off,” he said. Mr Rees said the city had recorded a total of 1,401 confirmed cases so far, and that more than 50,000 Covid-19 tests had been completed since March. He said Bristol’s R rate – a measure of how quickly the virus spreads – was between 0.8 and 1. By Amanda Cameron, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Donations provide £44k research boost VITAL Coronavirus research in Bristol has been awarded £44,499 by Southmead Hospital Charity thanks to donations from the public. The funding will enable researchers to continue the next phase of their research to find new breakthroughs in treatments and understanding of the virus to ultimately save lives. The additional funding comes on top of an initial £22,000 given by Southmead Hospital Charity at the start of the three groundbreaking research projects. But the charity still needs more support to reach their target of £815,000 to fund this research to develop tests to diagnose and identify immunity to Coronavirus (Covid-19), explore secondary lung and infection complications from the virus and test new drug treatments for Coronavirus (Covid-19). Researchers are working

alongside doctors and nurses on the frontline to give NHS clinicians in Bristol better ways of treating people who have Coronavirus. The projects have already recruited over a hundred patients who have recovered from Coronavirus to help. These projects will also bring better understanding of the longterm impact of the virus and will support the NHS in preparing for a new medical landscape of the future. Dr David Arnold, from Southmead Hospital (North Bristol NHS Trust) and NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow in University of Bristol’s Medical School, who is leading one of the research projects called DISCOVER, said: “We are thrilled to have secured this latest round of funding to enable us to continue our Coronavirus research work. “Thank you to everyone who has supported this appeal

– you have enabled us to make some real progress in our understanding of Coronavirus. “I am confident that we can continue to make progress in understanding how we can support our clinical colleagues in the NHS to better treat patients and identify who is most at risk from this virus.” Director of Southmead Hospital Charity, Sarah Harrison, said: “We are proud to be able to continue our funding of these important projects. “It is thanks to our donors and supporters that we have been able to give this latest round of funding; which is testament to the people of Bristol who have stepped up and supported us brilliantly throughout this pandemic. “But there is still a long way to go and is crucial that we continue this momentum so I’d appeal to the people and businesses of Bristol to get behind our

Leading the DISCOVER research project, Dr David Arnold researchers and support their work by donating to our appeal.” Led by the team at North Bristol NHS Trust, in partnership with local NHS Hospitals, Public Health England and the University of Bristol, these pioneering projects are contributing to a UKled research programme for Coronavirus (Covid-19) which researchers hope will lead to new breakthroughs in fighting the virus. Local businesses need our support By Keri Beckingham TRADERS in Westbury have spoken out over the need for people to support local businesses after the coronavirus lockdown. During Shop Local Week last month, Henleaze and Westbury Voice spoke to several business owners in Westbury village to find out how things are going post-lockdown. Tiriel Lovejoy owns Preserve Foods on Westbury Hill, which has been open since the middle of July. The store is Tiriel’s third zero waste shop in Bristol, following ones on Gloucester Road and Redfield, selling items by weight and avoiding packaging where possible. The shop’s reputation has travelled far already, being featured in a recent article in the New York Times about the UK’s economic recovery starting in suburbs rather than cities. Tiriel said: “I was about to sign the lease on the new shop on March 20, which was the same time as lockdown started. A lot of businesses put their expansion plans on hold, but I decided to take the gamble in the hope that Covid would be temporary and our plans would be more permanent. “We got the keys at the end of May, and it took about seven weeks to get the shop ready to open once some of the lockdown restrictions had eased. Unfortunately we couldn’t have a big opening party, but the feedback from customers so far has been really positive. “It was amazing for our little shop to get recognition in the New York Times article and we’ve even had customers off the back of it too, with one resident being told about us by her Dad who

actually lives in New York! “It has been a very quiet period for us due to Covid and it being the middle of summer, but hopefully in future once more people know more about us things will get better. "I think it’s important for people to shop local as it helps to keep money circulating locally, and it gives a nice feeling to know people personally and that we’re all helping each other out.” Amanda George owns We Make Bristol in Westbury village. She says that although she has received fantastic support from customers since reopening on June 15, she is concerned whether her business would survive a second lockdown. “I can’t speak for others but being closed during lockdown meant I took a massive hit financially, and I think it’s important that people shop local as if they don’t shops like mine will go out of business,” said Amanda. “One lady came in recently who also owns a small business, and she said that although she doesn’t need anything she wanted to buy something to support another small local independent. Another lady bought a card from me, and said she was working her way round the village buying one small thing from each business which was lovely. “I’ve been a lot quieter than I would normally be at this time

Got News? Call 0117 9082121

of year, and although parking has always been a problem in the village, now that the council have barriers up I think this has made things worse as there are now even less parking spaces available. “I think some people are still nervous about going out too and aren’t comfortable about shopping at the moment, and I think it’s important to stress that people should do whatever is right for them. "I’m also in the process of putting We Make Bristol online, so that we can cater for everyone.” WH Mogford & Sons hardware shop has been open in the village since the 1860s. Owned by Paul Gillam since 2004, it is one of oldest shops in Bristol, and his daughter Sophie thinks the shop’s history makes it a key part of the village. She said: “We were allowed to stay open during lockdown as we sell hardware and pet supplies. During April we were completely flat out the whole time, and made 350 deliveries to people who were completely isolating, so it was hectic. It was a really busy time for us, especially as B&Q were closed, but we have certainly got quieter since they reopened. “Being a local family business, our customers are basically supporting us as a family to live. When we were at our busiest point we had lots of

great feedback from customers, but some people we have not seen since. We were going to our suppliers every day to get special orders in for people, and we do try and go above and beyond for our customers, and if they support us then we will do everything we can to support them. Giving a personal service is really important to us.” Stoke Lane Cards and Gifts were able to stay open during lockdown as they started selling cleaning products, toilet roll and food stuffs. Commenting on their experiences, Mike Rodway said: “The government grant in April has been a great help to us, and we have noticed that footfall is starting to improve now the restrictions have been eased. Some people that have been sheltering have made a reappearance, and we know some people have been nervous about shopping, but we hope that by knowing shop keepers such as us, it will help to improve their confidence. “People can’t just browse and spend lots of time in shops any more as they are worried about other people. I think as independents we have quite an important role in helping customers through this, and it has been really nice to see them again. It’s a difficult time for us all, but I think this is just the new norm.”

Outdoor concert boosts spirits in lockdown ON Sunday 3 August, the residents of Fallodon Court in Henleaze were treated to an afternoon of songs performed by Laura Presti, daughter of a resident and accompanied by piano and vocal teacher Gaenor Rees-Elliott, also a resident. All of the residents of the private retirement estate managed by Anchor Hanover Group are aged over 60, with many in their 90s and several having to shield as a result of the pandemic. Not being able to enjoy the usual weekly coffee mornings, this was a much-welcome respite to the isolation many have endured. It was joyful to see residents enjoying the social atmosphere, singing and the sun!

n NEWS THE Covid-19 pandemic has meant a difficult time for many people but, with our elderly generation high on the ‘at risk’ scale, Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham’s Chief Executive Frances Stretton has just about started to breathe again. With early, preventative action and comprehensive additional measures in place, the retirement organisation has, to date, had no coronavirus cases across its five Bristol houses and has now officially opened its doors again to new residents.

Abbeyfield offers a safe retirement option for Bristol

How have you managed to keep residents safe during the pandemic? We always have stringent hygiene and infection control procedures in place and we significantly increased measures to reduce the risk of infection across all our houses. We immediately introduced enhanced cleaning regimes and social distancing, such as different sittings at mealtimes, or spreading residents between different rooms to eat, and insisted on at least 3 metres’ distance at all times. I have to say our staff members have been incredible and remain absolutely committed to the health and well-being of our residents. We’re a strong team and I’m so very proud of everyone. How did residents cope? The hardest thing for residents was not being able to see their loved ones. We had to limit visitors to carers, or a family member or friend acting in the capacity of carer. As a retirement organisation whose ethos centres around community, companionship and helping older people remain independent, having to ask residents to stay in the house during lockdown was also very difficult. But we had to keep them as safe and protected as possible, and to support them during this very worrying time. How was the atmosphere in the houses during lockdown? Team members were amazing when we couldn’t bring in our usual entertainers or keep fit people, and they ramped up our

9

activities and fun events to keep everyone occupied. The good weather helped tremendously and, as soon as we could, family and friends were able to visit in the gardens. Residents are now able to welcome visitors inside the house which is wonderful, and great for morale.

person comes to live with us. New residents are currently asked to self-isolate for 10 days in their new apartment but after that, they’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of their new Abbeyfield home.

As part of the Safe Hands campaign, Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham is offering all new residents one week free! Houses in Redland, Henleaze, Easter Compton, Hanham and Keynsham. Call 0117 973 6997 to find out more or go to www. abbeyfield-bristol.co.uk Part of The Abbeyfield Society, an international organisation established in the 1950’s to combat loneliness and isolation in the elderly, Abbeyfield Bristol & Keynsham offers supported retirement living in studio and one-bedroom flats within five houses across Bristol. Residents benefit from affordable all-inclusive rental fees, delicious home-cooked meals, a calendar of social events and the reassurance of a team member on hand 24 hours a day.

What is the current situation across your houses? We haven’t been able to show potential residents around the houses since early March and so our enquiry levels dropped. As a result, there are vacancies across most of our houses, which is an unusual situation for us to be in. I’m also very aware that there are older people who have been isolated from their families during the pandemic, and who might still be struggling to live on their own, and it‘s concerning to think they might lack the confidence to make the move to an environment where they will be happier and more secure. What would you say to reassure families and potential residents? I do appreciate families might be concerned about their loved one moving to a retirement house right now, but I want people to know that it’s completely safe to join any one of our Abbeyfield houses and that we have lots of measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety when a new

Mourners line route of socially distanced funeral FAMILY and friends of the late Arthur Brice attended a funeral service at Canford Crematorium on July 27. An avid supporter of Westbury-on-Trym Village Show, being the Plant and Vegetable Judge for many years, Arthur passed away at the age of 82 in July after a long illness.

Due to coronavirus regulations, only twenty people were allowed into the chapel by invitation of Arthur’s family. These included relatives, old colleagues and some representatives of different organisations who knew him well from all his horticultural activities.

Survey provides first step towards citizens’ assembly BRISTOL City Council is moving forward with plans to carry out a Citizens’ Assembly involving a representative cross-section of 100 Bristolians, to advise on the city’s future priorities and recovery as Bristol begins to emerge from coronavirus. The council has launched a mass survey - Your City Our Future City Survey - to help inform the aims of the Citizens' Assembly and what topics it should focus on. In this survey you can tell the council what you liked and disliked about living in Bristol before lockdown, about your experiences during lockdown, and what you would like Bristol to be like in the future. The survey launched on August 5 and is set to run until September 9. An online discussion forum at the end of September will follow to gather ideas about how the city can achieve the future people want for Bristol. Bristol's first citizens' assembly will be held in late 2020/early 2021 and will discuss and aim to build consensus on issues where people disagree about the best way forward. The citizens' assembly aims to be representative of Bristol's diverse citizens.

We're online too! www.henleazeandwestburyvoice.co.uk

Friends unable to enter the chapel came to show their respect by lining the funeral route. On a day marked by heavy downpours, people waited patiently for an hour for Arthur’s funeral cortege to arrive. A memorial celebration is planned for later in the year.

Life-saving equipment for RAFA club A 24 HOUR public access defibrillation machine has been installed at the RAFA club in Westbury-on-Trym. The machine is in memory of Rosemary Hammond, wife of Bob Hammond, who together with Simon Brookes is fundraising to provide defibrillation machines around the city. Simon, a Community First Responder with South West Ambulance Service for nine years who now teaches CPR to the public, says: “I would hate to think that somebody passes away because there isn’t a machine nearby. Immediate action from a bystander and early defibrillation are key to increasing someone’s chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.” Public access defibrillators can be found at the following locations in the Henleaze and Westbury Voice area: Southmead fire station, the Methodist Church Hall and White Lion pub in Westbury village, and at the junction of Waterford Road and Henleaze Road. Each has a voice and visual prompt to tell people what to do to help someone having a heart attack. Simon has received a defibrillator for North View, funded by local donations, which will be positioned soon. He’s currently working with The Beehive at Wellington Hill West and shops in Stoke Bishop to raise funds to place the life-saving equipment there too. If you would like to find out more about the free CPR courses Simon runs or want to help fundraise for a community use defibrillator, email Simon at simonbrookes@gmail.com.

Independent report praises Home-Start Bristol AN external evaluation carried out by the Foundation for Social Improvement has heaped praise on Home-Start Bristol adding that the charity: ‘helps families overcome obstacles and build happier lives.’ The report goes on: ‘the most significant change seen is in parents feeling less isolated and accessing more services. Alongside this, families feel better able to cope with everyday issues and concerns.’ Andrea Priest, manager of Home-Start Bristol, explained: “We aim to help parents in disadvantaged families to give their children the best possible start in life, providing them with support from trained parent volunteers and expert staff during the crucial early years of children’s lives. We are delighted with the findings of this report on our work between April 2019 and March 2020.” Home-Start Bristol (HSB) is a registered charity that supports struggling families with at least one child under five living in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Based at Greenway Business Centre in Southmead, HSB supports families through carefully matched weekly visits from trained volunteers and/or family support staff. Most families accessing the service are referred by other agencies; many are struggling with low levels of mental health and self-esteem, being unable to cope with day-to-day running of the home and struggling to manage their children’s behaviour and routines. Many are also very isolated and are not accessing other services. During the period of the evaluation, parents saw their mental health and well-being improve: 80% of parents had

During lockdown, HSB sourced a £1k grant from the John Lewis Covid-19 crisis fund to support families struggling with food poverty. Staff and volunteers delivered fresh food and plant boxes to families and the charity hopes to continue this healthy eating initiative into the future.

increased self-esteem and 79% found they were coping better with their mental health; 88% of parents said that they felt better able to manage everyday issues and concerns. Most parents became more involved with their children’s development, which is evidenced to have long-lasting impacts on children’s life chances and attainment. Martha, a mum of three who was supported by HSB said: “I don’t know where I’d be without Home-Start. I’m sad the support is coming to an end because they’ve been such a crucial part of my life, but I know I will be alright because they’ve given me the strength and confidence to know that I will cope.” Another parent added: “I needed someone to talk to who wouldn’t be there to judge me and tell me what to do. My volunteer was great and would come and offer advice, show me how to do things, listen to me and also interact with my child, which meant a lot.” Home-Start Bristol’s work also has a positive impact on the volunteers who undertake the HSB training and progress to support families. Volunteers speak very highly of the experience; they gain new skills, broaden their perspectives and enjoy meeting new people. Many go on to use their skills to forge new careers, going into further education and working in more formal settings. The report concludes: ‘HomeStart Bristol is a vital part of the

local infrastructure of support for families in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Partner organisations interviewed as part of the evaluation clearly felt that Home-Start Bristol plays a

unique role in the community and meets needs that other services cannot. The level of need in families is set to increase in the coming months and years as the country recovers from the Covid19 pandemic; therefore, services like those of Home-Start Bristol will be crucial to supporting families in both the immediate and longterm future.’ Home-Start Bristol is actively recruiting volunteers. The next volunteer preparation course starts in a few weeks’ time on 23 September and will be run online, making it accessible to participants from across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Universities support end-of-year clear-up BRISTOL City Council and Bristol Waste partnered with the city’s universities to provide extra waste collections for students following the end of the academic year. Supported by University of Bristol (UoB) and University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), team members from Bristol Waste spent an extra 640 hours during the end of year clear-up, tackling the increase in waste and items left behind by students moving out for the summer. Councillor Steve Pearce, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Waste said: “We appreciate the move out can be a stressful time for students. It can also have an impact on neighbours and other communities, and it is important that we help reduce the impact on them too. “As ever, we anticipated a rise in the amount of waste needing to be collected, and due to Covid-19, this needed to be carried out as quickly and safely

as possible. “The continued support and communication during these difficult times from both UoB and UWE Bristol has allowed us to remove large amounts of waste from hotspot student areas.” Within a two-week window at the end of June, Bristol Waste carried out additional bin collections in student areas following the end of the academic year, clearing an additional

53.23 tonnes of waste - the same weight as more than 30 cars. Dan Kelly, Deputy Operations Director, Bristol Waste Company said: “We are proud that this project, which demonstrated a brilliant piece of team work with the universities, Bristol City Council and Bristol Waste meant we were able to act swiftly to keep the streets clear. “We would also like to remind students to manage

their waste responsibly, either by using the kerbside recycling and refuse collections, booking a bulky waste collection, or taking items to one of the two recycling centres in the city. Or if something is good quality, why not see if you can find it a new home at our reuse shop, via a charity, or online community groups. Fly-tipping is an offence and could lead to prosecution.” As well as clearing up waste from residential areas, Bristol Waste team members made an additional 82 collections at university halls of residence across the city over the fortnight. The University of Bristol and the University of the West of England have run the Bristol Big Give for 10 years together with Bristol Waste, encouraging students to reuse and recycle where possible when moving out. The scheme is on hold this year due to Covid-19 but last year, the campaign raised £344,000 for the British Heart Foundation and local Bristol charities.

Bursary bid to make tech more inclusive UNIVERSITY of Bristol led technology incubator, SETsquared Bristol, is relaunching its Breakthrough Bursary for the second year, continuing its commitment to promote inclusion and equal opportunities in the technology sector. The bursary supports BAME entrepreneurs to access business support for technology startups. SETsquared are encouraging BAME women founders as part of its Bursary callout, as a particularly under-represented group. Funded by SETsquared alumni members, the Breakthrough Bursary provides access to strategic advice and coaching, as well as access to University of Bristol expertise. Companies also get a fixed desk in a shared office, benefitting from the supportive co-working communities at SETsquared and Engine Shed. Each bursary covers 75% of SETsquared Bristol’s Residential Startup Membership for one year, which normally costs £210 per month. Glyn Blaize, founder of performance software application Northstar Innovation Group, was awarded a bursary last year. Glyn said: “The Breakthrough Bursary has been a great support and brilliant treasure trove for NORTHSTAR. Whether attending a seminar, to prepping for investment there

is support for every step of the startup scaleup journey. I would definitely say SETsquared will add some serious nitro to your startup engine.” The Breakthrough Bursary was one of a number of key recommendations from a SETsquared funded research report carried out by partners ACH and Up Our Street in 2018, and rooted in research with BAME tech entrepreneurs. SETsquared Bristol’s BAME founders have increased from 14% to 16% over the last year, compared to the 5% national average. Lisa Matthews, SETsquared Bristol Incubation Manager, said: “Inclusive and sustainable growth is more vital than ever in a post-COVID world, and it has been proven that diverse business ecosystems will drive innovation and economic impact. Last year’s Breakthrough Bursary saw an incredible response but we recognise there is plenty more work to be done to provide equal opportunities in tech.” Any BAME entrepreneurs can apply for the Breakthrough Bursary if they are developing a new tech business, or already have an incorporated tech business, and want help growing it and achieving financial success. For more information see the SETsquared Bristol website. The completion date for applications is 30 September 2020.

n A-LEVELS There were no exams - but results day and its aftermath brought plenty of stress for the A-level classes of 2020. Schools have commended students for the way they coped with results and then late changes to the grades. BRISTOL FREE SCHOOL THE school is delighted to be celebrating the significant successes of Year 13 students. This year group were not able to show what they would have achieved in formal A Level and BTEC exams, but we were very pleased that Ofqual and the government have allowed the ‘Centre Assessed Grades’ to be used for A Level qualifications, allowing all our students to benefit from their hard work, progress and educational excellence as they conclude their time at secondary school and go on to their chosen destinations. Fifteen of our students achieved all A* or A grades. These results ensure that the school maintains its position as one of the top non-selective Sixth Forms in the area for A

Level results. The school also has continued its tradition of supporting students gaining places in some of the top ranked universities in the country with three students having achieved the grades required to study at Oxford or Cambridge. Mrs King, Headteacher, said: “I am extremely proud of the achievements of this hardworking Year 13 cohort who deserve this success after such a challenging year. "They have been a wonderful year group who made significant contributions to the wider life of their school. We are delighted with these A Level results and wish students every success in their next steps. We will miss them next year and we hope they will keep in touch.” Mr Walker, Assistant Headteacher and Head of Sixth Form said: “I am so pleased for our students. Considering the very unusual circumstances this year, the vast majority of students have gone on to their chosen destination and have achieved a truly fantastic set of results. We couldn’t be happier for all our students and wish them all the very best of luck. We will miss them all immensely.” Sixth Form students will be taking part in an adapted certificate celebration as soon as circumstances allow. We can’t wait to finally be able to celebrate their success formally with them. Well done class of 2020!

n A-LEVELS BRISTOL CATHEDRAL SCHOOL MANY of the A-level students at Bristol Cathedral School's sixth fom earned outstanding results. From a cohort of over 200 students, 38 per cent of all grades are A* or A and 87% of grades are A*-C. These are the highest headline figures at A Level. Students have won places at some of the most competitive university courses, including Oxbridge, as a result of all their hard work. BRISTOL GRAMMAR SCHOOL BRISTOL Grammar School students have achieved great succcess in A-level and Pre-U grades. Headmaster Jaideep Barot said: “I want to pay huge tribute to all of the students in our leaving Upper Sixth – both those who are receiving results, and those pioneering students in our first IB cohort, who received their results in early July. "I feel very fortunate to have had such a positive, eclectic and committed group of young men and women as my first Sixth-form cohort as BGS Headmaster. I know that many of them were frustrated that they were denied the opportunity to sit their examinations, and to demonstrate their academic achievement in the usual way, but we could not be prouder

of how they have handled the challenges and uncertainty they have encountered. Their collective results are very impressive, and are testament to the talent, dedication and togetherness of this fantastic cohort.” CLIFTON COLLEGE HEAD of College Dr Tim Greene said: “We are incredibly impressed by the way our Upper Sixth have navigated this unprecedented year. We - their teachers, Housemasters, Housemistresses and myself - are very proud of them for the grades they have achieved this year and for everything they have accomplished at Clifton. “Many of our Sixth Formers have been with us since the Pre-Prep, some have joined later in their school careers; however long their journey at the College has been, I hope it has made as positive an impact on them as they have made on Clifton. “We wish them all the very best in their onward journey, wherever it may take them.” NORTH BRISTOL POST 16 CENTRE NORTH Bristol Post 16 Centre, which includes students from Redland Green and Cotham schools, has been working hard to ensure young people have secured their

university places and apprenticeships in the wake of the A-level chaos. Assistant headteachers Aimi Potter and Owen Tiplady said: “We could not be more proud of the resilience and maturity our Year 13 students have demonstrated ever since they were notified of the cancellation of exams. “Our students have maintained a positive outlook and shown both patience and ambition as we have navigated changes to the awarding of examination results and the uncertainty created by the many additional changes and updates reported in recent weeks and days. “While we were sad not to be able to invite this exceptional cohort of students in to celebrate their results in the usual way, we have been happy to share in their successes and excitement for the future in the many conversations that have already taken place. “The rate at which our students are gaining entry to competitive apprenticeships and university places is the same as it has been in previous years. “For more than ten years, our schools have been working together, as the North Bristol Post 16 Centre, to make sure that every student has the opportunity, support and skill set they need to reach (and extend far beyond) their goals.”

n A-LEVELS V6

STUDENTS at V6, the post-16 provision at Colston’s Girls’ School (CGS) in partnership with Fairfield High School, are celebrating A-level results in line with previous years. Twenty per cent of all grades were A*/A, with many exceptional individual performances. Exceptional individual achievements include Helen Cutler (A*A*A*A*), who will study medicine and surgery at Lancaster University; Elle Radford (A*AA) will complete an internship in engineering consultancy during a gap year before applying to university; Fiona Chung (A*A*AA) will study psychology and neuroscience at the University of Bristol; Nawal Abdullah (A*AB) has secured a Bristol Scholars place to read law, joining her sister at the University of Bristol; Hannah Eastwood (AAA) will study criminology at the University of Birmingham; and Trinity Willis (AAA) will study veterinary science at the University of Bristol. Fiona said: “My grades have exceeded my own high expectations and I’d like to thank all of my friends and teachers who have always encouraged me to keep striving.” Nawal said: “I am incredibly thankful for all the support I have received from my teachers and tutors over the course of my A-level studies. ” Maddison Bowen (AAB) will read English at the University of Liverpool; Lucy Britton (AAB) will read history at the University of Exeter; Isabelle Courtier (AAB) will read forensic anthropology at Liverpool’s

John Moores University; Chloe Daly (AAB) will read English at King’s College London; Maida Rasool (AAB) will read English literature and philosophy at Cardiff University; and Martina Tancock (AAB) will read physics with particle physics and cosmology at Lancaster. Maida Rasool said: “My grades reflect the time and work that I've put into my subjects and the support given to me by my teachers. V6 and CGS have really helped me to reach my full potential and I can’t wait to start my university course.” V6 head, Caroline McClean, said: “Our students have demonstrated incredible resilience in very unusual circumstances this year and we are extremely proud of their performance. Our strong results and the excellent destinations students have secured are testament to the hard work of students alongside the support of their teachers and families. Where the achievements of some students have not been accurately recognised in the externally calculated grade, we will be providing support to secure the appropriate outcome. Principal Kerry McCullagh said: “V6 is a close community and the students and staff have pulled together to navigate this uniquely challenging end to their school years. It is wonderful to see students achieving the qualifications they need to progress on to their dream destinations. "I have no doubt that these compelling individuals, so determined to make a positive difference to the world we live in, will continue to contribute to their communities.”

n A LEVELS BADMINTON SCHOOL THE adaptability and strength of the Badminton School community has presented itself in this year’s A Level results. With pupils living across the world, the lockdown period saw Badminton girls develop into digital natives almost overnight, with 1,300 live lessons streamed online across the globe through the online platform, “Badminton ConnectED”. Jenny, who has secured a place at UCL to study Natural Sciences, said: “Remote learning allowed me to develop better self-discipline and independent research skills. I am proud to have had the chance to participate in ICHEP 2020, a virtual international conference on high-energy physics organised by CERN,

enabling me to hone essential timemanagement and communication skills.” Badminton girls once again gained places on courses at a range top universities including Edinburgh, Cardiff, Durham and The London School of Economics as well as other renowned establishments such as The Caurtauld Insitute of Art and Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne. 67% of girls achieved their first choice university and 64% are going on to study at prestigious Russell Group

universities. Freya joined Badminton in Year 7 and, determined to study Law, balanced her academic studies with her busy sporting commitments and has successfully secured a place at King's College London to read Law. Zoe, who in Year 9 won an internal colouring competition to have her design painted on a model of Shaun the Sheep at the School, is taking her creative eye onto Sheffield University to study Architecture. Mrs Tear, Headmistress, said: “This A Level cohort has risen to every challenge presented to them and the last few months have been no different. The pupils embraced the necessary move to digital learning and supported the quality enrichment opportunities on offer, allowing them to cement their skills as self-sufficient and confident independent learners. I applaud each and every one of the girls and thank the whole community at Badminton for their strength and ingenuity during such an unusual time.” CLIFTON HIGH SCHOOL A level Results Day 2020 was a truly extraordinary and emotional occasion. Head of School, Dr Alison Neill said: “The High School staff and I wish each and every one of these wonderful young people good health, happiness and every success in life. They are true role models to the younger pupils of our School, and have enriched Clifton High by their presence; we shall miss them enormously. “The Class of 2020, and we, their school and families, as their biggest champions, have much to be proud of. As well as their A level results, each student leaves Clifton High with a toolkit of skills and personal qualities that are as important as academic qualifications and will serve them well in life beyond School. Their many other achievements during their time at Clifton High should also be noted and fondly remembered, from Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, school productions and World Challenge expeditions to Young Enterprise, outstanding sporting accolades and the exemplary ambassador roles they assumed in school and the wider community.”

REDMAIDS’ HIGH SCHOOL DESPITE the clouds of controversy surrounding the way these results have been graded due to the coronavirus pandemic, the picture at Redmaids’ High School is extremely strong. Individual successes include Rosie Owen and Layla Qazi who are heading to Oxford University to study English and History respectively, and Lauren who will take her place at Cambridge University to study Natural Sciences having taken a gap year. A number of girls received all A* and A grades, including Chloe Bridson-Dommett who achieved four A*s and plans to study Maths at Bath University. Regina Szokodi who joined us from Blaise High School in Year 12 on a scholarship achieved an A* and two As, and so has secured her place at Warwick University to study Physics and Astro Physics. This has been an extremely challenging time, exacerbated by last-minute changes from the Government and a u-turn after the grades had been awarded, which saw the students being given their ‘Centre Assessed Grades’ as predicted by their teachers. Reflecting on this, Headmistress Isabel Tobias, who is retiring at the end of the summer holidays, said, “This has been an extremely challenging time for students and schools, with the parameters constantly changing. “However, following the Government’s announcement on 17 August, we are pleased that A Level students – our own, and those across the country - will now all receive the grades that their teachers believe they are deserving of, putting an end to the feelings of trauma and helplessness that many experienced. Although this doesn’t compare to actually sitting the exams, it is at least a fairer reflection of their capabilities. "We're so proud of all of our students and how they have responded in this turbulent time. I am delighted that the vast majority of our students have secured their first-choice university place and I am confident they are all now in a position to take the next positive next step in their education.”

n MEET THE HEAD

S

Message from Justin Humphreys, Head of St Katherine’s School

T Katherine’s is a thriving, diverse school community that has educated students from all over Bristol for many years. Indeed, Year 7 students from over 50 primary schools are joining us this September. So why do so many parents and carers choose St Katherine’s for their child’s secondary education? I believe it’s because our approach is based on the belief that, as individuals, we all perform at our best when we feel confident, secure and valued. Along with my committed team I am passionate about giving every student an environment where they feel safe and happy so they can achieve their full potential. We do this through our exceptional pastoral care and absolute commitment to wellbeing which makes St Katherine’s such a happy, thriving school. We take full advantage of St Katherine’s size to create a friendly atmosphere where every child is well known and cared for as an individual.

Like our students, our staff are energetic, passionate and committed professionals, who stretch and challenge our young people both inside and outside of the classroom - we all learn something new everyday and it enriches and improves us all. Besides our track record of academic success - our GCSE, A level and vocational subject results have improved every year for the last six years - we offer a broad curriculum alongside co-curricular activities

designed to develop our students into young adults equipped socially and academically to take on the opportunities and challenges of life. Above all, a St Katherine’s education is busy, inspiring, ambitious and great fun! Come along to our September open day (details below) to experience it for yourself. You and your child are guaranteed a warm welcome.

n GCSEs Following the A-levels furore, GCSE students received grades awarded by their schools REDLAND GREEN SCHOOL HEAD teacher Louise Blundell has praised the GCSE class of 2020 for their efforts and achievements. She said: “I could not be more proud of our Year 11 cohort this academic year. “We cannot change the turbulent and ever changing processes that our young people have had to endure during this time but are delighted that we can, following the release of their GCSE results, support them in ensuring they are able to take their next step on their educational journeys and now aim towards the bright futures they have ahead of them. “We hope that the BTEC results will follow presently so that our students can fully celebrate their success and confirm their future plans.” BRISTOL FREE SCHOOL BFS is celebrating the success of its GCSE cohort, who have continued the school’s upward trend in exam results. Headteacher, Mrs King, said: ‘I am immensely proud of the resilience and positive attitude shown by our Year 11s

during what has been a challenging and unprecedented time. I have no doubt that these young people will emerge from this experience even stronger and more determined to succeed in the next stage of their education. We are delighted to announce that we have record numbers of students who have decided to continue their A-level studies here at BFS.” Mr MacBlain, Year 11 leader, said: "It has been a real pleasure and privilege to have worked with the year group for the last five years. I am delighted that in these challenging circumstances they have achieved a fantastic set of results that their hard work and endeavour deserves." CLIFTON HIGH SCHOOL CLIFTON High pupils attained an outstanding set of GCSE results, outperforming previous years, with an increase in the top grades. Boys and girls performed equally well, with the same proportional increases across all subjects. Dr Alison Neill, Head of School stated: “This significant accomplishment is testament to each and every one of them. The successful transition to a co-educational school and the introduction of the Diamond Edge Model of Education is reaping rewards, both at GCSE and A level. “As we look forward to the

commencement of School from September, these Year 11 pupils will become Sixth Form students, and provided they continue to work hard and support one another, the world is their oyster. “The School sends a heartfelt congratulations to each and every one of these GCSE pupils and the A level students, who now have achieved the results they truly deserve.” CLIFTON COLLEGE CLIFTON College said its GCSE grades reflected the strength of the year group. A spokesman said: “The pupils have taken the move to remote learning and changes to the curriculum in their stride and it is great to see them now receive their results after this unprecedented period of change. “We are very pleased that the teachers’ assessments have been taken into account to produce the results. Although the end of their fifth form year did not play out in quite the way we or our pupils would have wanted, we hope this is a way of recognising the hard work and dedication they have shown throughout their GCSE courses. They have excelled in the classroom as well as in music, drama, sport and a wide range of other activities and we hope they will be proud of everything they have accomplished.”

n GCSEs COLSTON'S GIRLS' COLSTON'S Girls’ School (CGS) has impressive GCSE results, reflecting the hard work of students and staff who have remained determined and focused through an unprecedented period of school closure. Seventeen per cent of grades were awarded at grade 9, equivalent to A*, and 88% of all students achieved at least five strong GCSE passes (grade 5 and above), including English and maths. Principal Kerry McCullagh said: “The current Year 11 students have demonstrated resilience and tenacity over the past six months, meeting every challenge head-on. Despite the disruption to their final year at CGS and the uncertainty surrounding the government’s system for calculating results, we are celebrating our students’ well-deserved success. I am delighted that their grades are a true reflection of five years’ hard work, allowing students to plan their futures with confidence and

testament to their hard work and unwavering focus. Students arrived in timed slots to collect their results. Head of V6, the post-16 provision at CGS, Caroline McClean said: “We are thrilled to see very strong results for our first cohort of students completing the HPQ. 80% of students gained a B grade or higher and 42% of students received an A or A* grade. We look forward to welcoming many of these outstanding students to V6 in September, where they can progress on to the Extended Project Qualification, highly valued by universities.” CEO of Venturers Trust, David Watson, said: “Congratulations and very well done to all our Year 11 students, we are extremely proud of you! Across Venturers Trust, in each of our academies, there was a rigorous and robust system in place to accurately determine centre assessment grades. The GCSE results we have announced today have been earned through hard work and are richly deserved.”

n GCSEs FAIRFIELD

FAIRFIELD High School (FHS) students are celebrating a strong set of GCSE results with many students awarded high grades based on their hard work and achievement over five years in the school. Others reached standards well above those that might have been expected when they started at FHS. The school has an excellent record in boosting pupil progress; in 2019 it was among the best 650 schools in the country. Fairfield is proud to recognise the success of all students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, those with English as an additional language and young people in care. The school is committed to ensuring that the students leaving this year are able to follow suitable courses from September. It is working with them to confirm their next steps. Some will go on to V6, the joint sixth form provision for Fairfield and Colston’s Girls’ School, while

others will take up places at other colleges and sixth forms in the city. Principal Nick Lewis said: “We are extremely proud of our Year 11s, whose time at Fairfield has been cut short by Covid-19. We are determined that their future plans will not be derailed by the coronavirus crisis. Our staff have really gone the extra mile to support them. “Well done to all the students who have achieved the grades they were hoping for. Perhaps more importantly, I want to congratulate all our young people who have shown such maturity and resilience during this emergency. I wish them all the best for the future.” Head student Alice Towle said: “Our teachers have been fantastic, checking up on us by phone and email. The post-16 transition co-ordinator knows where everyone is planning to go for sixth form in September and will speak to people again after they have received their results.” Alice, who is one of Bristol’s youth mayors, said it was a pity that her year group had missed

29

Alice Towle, Head Student at FHS and Bristol Youth Mayor their exams, seen their Prom postponed and been denied the chance to experience results day in school together. But, she said, the current generation of 16-year-olds could be proud of the way they had supported one another and coped during the past difficult months. “We have done really well,” she said. “At Fairfield, we have had a great five years. The school genuinely has a community feel. There is mutual respect between students and staff and the sense of belonging is really special.”

COTHAM THE school has congratulated Year 11 students on their results in this most difficult of years. “We are exceptionally proud of each and every one of them and wish all of them the very best for the next stage of their education,” it said. “Thank you to our staff for their dedicated support for our students and to our parents and carers for their continuous commitment to and support for our school.”

n GCSEs REDMAIDS' HIGH SCHOOL REDMAIDS' High Year 11 students received their GCSE results after five months away from school. The new headmaster, Paul Dwyer, said: “So much has been asked of this group of students in recent months, and we are delighted to be able to celebrate their successes at GCSE level. “I know that many students were disappointed that the chance to prove themselves in examinations was taken away, but we are really pleased that their efforts have still been appropriately recognised and rewarded. I am so excited to be working with this year group as my first sixth form cohort and look forward to seeing the even greater heights they will go on to reach.” He welcomed the changes from the government, to allow centre-assessed grades to form the basis for qualifications being awarded. “This change has been for the best, given that teachers know

BLAISE HIGH SCHOOL

New head Paul Dwyer with pupils Phoebe and Martha their students’ and their abilities so well. “The focus at Redmaids’ High has always been on ensuring a strong bond between students and teachers, and I am pleased that this understanding has formed the basis of the grades that the girls will receive.”

Retiring head Isabel Tobias added:“The last few months have asked a great deal of students and teachers, and we have been incredibly impressed with the manner and determination with which our girls here at Redmaids’ High School have responded.”

WILL Smith, CEO of the Greenshaw Learning Trust, paid tribute to students at Blaise High School and others in the trust on GCSE results day. He said: “Whilst we are disappointed our students never had the opportunity to sit their exams and prove what they have learnt during many years of study, our schools have fairly awarded grades that reflect our students’ dedication and hard work. Students can be reassured that Centre Assessed Grades have been through a rigorous process of moderation. "At the end of a turbulent year, our schools will be on hand to support our students as they take the next step on their learning journey.”

TOYBOX DAY

QEH

YEAR 11 pupils were welcomed into QEH for the first time since March to receive their GCSE grades. Headmaster Rupert Heathcote said: “It’s the sustained effort and hard work of the pupils throughout the two years of the GCSE courses that provided the evidence to enable us to award these grades. Their teachers and I are immensely proud of them. I would like to thank the staff who shouldered the additional task of finalising exam grades while continuing to teach and support all the other year groups with their virtual learning and wellbeing during lockdown. It has been a challenging time for all of us and, since beginning my role as headmaster at Easter, I have been impressed to see such outstanding resilience and commitment in the whole QEH community.”

TOYBOX DAY BADMINTON SCHOOL

YEAR 11 girls at Badminton School kept busy while awaiting their GCSE results. More than 1,300 live lessons were streamed across the world through the school’s online platform. Extra online learning opportunities including Number Theory, Wellbeing, Persuasive Narratives and Film Analysis proved popular among the students as a way of supplementing their GCSE studies. Headmistress Rebecca Tear said: “I applaud the girls in Year 11 not only for their resilience in the face of the challenges that the last few months have brought, but more importantly for seizing the new opportunities that this unique situation has presented. "The depth of their creativity and innovation has known no bounds and I am very proud of them all, as well as the Badminton community as a whole.”

School uniform donation appeal

WE pride ourselves here at Torwood House School in knowing every child personally therefore no child is ever unnoticed or invisible. Every child’s aspirations are whole-heartedly supported, whatever direction they wish to take. Our Independent School’s Association (ISA) Junior and Prep School Award for Excellence and Innovation clearly demonstrates our passion for our children’s learning and our commitment to providing a cutting edge curriculum. Our award winning education, coupled with a nurturing environment means each child receives a tailored teaching style to suit them, allowing pupils to truly flourish. Our pupils learn a modern foreign language, which gives them a wider world view and an appreciation of cultures other than English at an earlier age than many. Other provision includes, unlike many other schools, weekly swimming lessons and Forest School for Reception children, which sees them exploring the natural world in nearby woodland. Clearly, our children are at the heart of everything we do! Why not come and meet our children, our greatest ambassadors! We offer primary education for boys and girls between the ages of 4 -11 years and are based in Redland. If you are considering sending your child to a small friendly school where your child will be supported with an individual learning journey, please contact us hello@torwoodhouseschool.co.uk

BRISTOL City Council has seen strong support for its first school uniform donation appeal. Families in Bristol were encouraged to donate items of uniform they no longer need to help others prepare for school. Donated items will be distributed to families at the end of the summer through partners such as Families in Focus teams, children’s centres, community organisations and food banks. Cabinet councillor for children, Helen Godwin, said: “Many families across the city are struggling financially in the economic fall-out of the Covid-19 crisis and buying a school uniform is another expense for parents who are already under a lot of pressure. "Parents are having to cut back on essentials or get into debt just to buy their children’s school uniforms. “Often a perfectly good uniform could go to landfill because it doesn’t fit any more, so we’d like to appeal to parents in Bristol to instead donate what they don’t need to help someone else. “We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of people in communities who have been supporting each other over the last few months and I’m confident that yet again we’ll see Bristol residents come together to help those less fortunate.” Anyone in need of a uniform this autumn should contact their local ward councillor or the Mayor's Office by emailing mayor@ bristol.gov.uk.

Rally call for children’s vaccinations PARENTS, families and guardians are being urged to contact their local GP, school or health centre to make sure their children’s vaccinations are up to date. The Local Government Association says that failure to vaccinate children today could lead to avoidable consequences in the long term. Many children and young people will have missed out on routine HPV, meningitis, and MMR vaccinations as they were unable to attend schools and health clinics during the coronavirus lockdown. Cllr Judith Blake, Chair of the LGA’s Children and Young People Board, said: “Vaccines are an absolutely essential part of our children’s health and wellbeing, so if you or any member of your household are not displaying symptoms of coronavirus and are not self-isolating, vaccinations should happen as normal. “Local services are working hard to ensure that people including babies, children and pregnant women still receive their routine vaccinations – they provide essential protection against potentially life-threatening diseases. “The national immunisation programme is highly successful in reducing the number of serious and life-threatening diseases such as whooping cough, scarlet fever and measles. High vaccine uptake can prevent a resurgence of these infections, which can cause harm and put unnecessary added pressure on the NHS. “We really do encourage parents to check if their child needs any vaccinations to make sure they are properly protected.” A full list of vaccinations and when they are available, for children and adults, is accessible through the NHS website.

n PETER'S VISION

Looking forward

I

’VE said before that I’m generally an optimist. This year was meant to be a great year for so many reasons. I think accepting where we are and making the most of what we’ve got, as well as looking forward with hope, is key to helping us all see this through. Schools are almost back, which I’m sure is a relief to so many of us, but perhaps for different reasons! I’m pleased that our three are looking forward to being back with their friends, no doubt in new ways to keep them all safe. It’s surely a credit to our schools that they’re managing so much and so well in such difficult circumstances. No mention of schools would be complete without a few eye and vision tips. It’s the time of year we receive the most referrals about children and young people with visual symptoms. They range from not being able to see the school board to cranky and tired children (who knew this could be due to eye strain eh!). It's more common to notice eye rubbing, excessive blinking and getting headaches, but we’re happy really to advise on all sorts of eye or vision concerns. Now I’m known as a tech lover, and as I’m sure we all did in the lockdown phase, my use of tech was significantly increased. My time was often spent on video calls to patients or reviewing and advising on guidance and patient safety documents. It was definitely a good time to test out the advice I’m usually giving to our patients; take regular breaks from your phone, tablet or computer screen, drink a good amount of water during the working day and make sure you get up and about at regular intervals. The stress relieving benefit of a short lunchtime walk in the sunshine was felt by many! I remain quietly (or maybe not so quietly!) in awe of the sublime quality and affordable luxury of our Tom Davies hand made glasses. The most common feedback our satisfied patients report is the day long comfort of wearing these glasses. The range

of materials, from soft touch Italian acetate to diamond (yes really!) coated Japanese titanium and ethical horn and ensures that whatever style you choose you too can look great & feel good in your new glasses! As always when you come and see us you can expect the usual high standards of personal service, professional expertise and hygiene excellence you’re used to, from your local independent opticians. You & your loved ones are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care and new glasses or contact lenses. We just ask that you telephone first to book a time to come in, to help us keep you all safe. Whatever your eye care needs, whether at school, home working or out & about our expert team is ready & waiting to help you - however you enjoy using your eyes & vision! To book an extended eye exam or frame style consultation for yourself or those you love, please call our Henleaze practice on 0117 962 2474 or our Fishponds practice on 0117 965 4434. WHILE most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

UWE project uses 3D tech to create lifelike body parts RESEARCHERS from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) are exploring how 3D technology can be used to improve surgical training by creating organ simulators which look and feel like real body parts. The aim of the PhD is to create interconnected model organs which mimic the appearance, elasticity and consistency of human tissue, thereby giving surgeons a realistic simulation on which to practice more complex procedures. Led by David Huson, Senior Research Fellow at CFPR, the project builds upon previous pilot studies into how 3D technologies can be used to develop low cost, high fidelity surgical simulation models. Mr Huson said: “This is a cross-disciplinary project, and we will be working closely with scientists, artists and surgeons to develop and test a working prototype. Physical organ simulators offer a more ethical alternative to human cadavers or animal subjects which are often expensive to obtain and difficult to access.’’ Researchers will replicate the interconnected organs and tissues of the duodenum, gall bladder, liver, pancreas and bile duct to create a prototype capable of carrying out a laparoscopic bile duct exploration; a complex surgical procedure used to remove stones lodged in the bile duct.

Contact us now for a complimentary financial planning review The pandemic and its economic consequences have recently gripped the markets causing a dramatic sell down in risk assets like shares over the last few months. The consensus view is: - There is a high risk of a prolonged global economic recession. - Equities are likely to remain extremely volatile in the shortterm as the story around the Coronavirus changes on a daily basis. The stock market panicked from around the end of February, causing shares to experience

some of the largest one day downward moves since 2008, 1987 and yes, even 1929. So, what does this all mean for your financial goals? Whether you are approaching retirement or indeed are already enjoying your retirement, then it is likely that you will be heavily invested in assets like pensions, ISAs and investment bonds – all of which themselves are likely to be invested, in some shape or form, in the stock market. Therefore, you should immediately consider a financial planning review to ensure you

are still on track and make any changes that are required. I encourage you therefore to act now to protect your financial goals and not wait until those ‘normal times’ which may never return as we once knew them. Coronavirus Safe Financial Planning Reviews Please be assured that we have taken all steps to eliminate any risks of contracting the virus during our reviews with clients. We are set up on all of the popular remote/video meeting systems (Zoom, Skype, Facetime, Teams etc) – just let us know which one you prefer. Alternatively, if you would like a traditional face to face meeting, our office is fully ‘Covid Secure’ with all cleaning and social

distancing processes in place. We even have a large outdoor courtyard meeting space if you prefer! Just let us know when booking. How to book Call 0117 363 6212 or email richard@haroldstephens.co.uk or contact us through the website www.haroldstephens.co.uk for your complimentary financial planning review. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

We must not waste the sacrifices of the last six months OVER the summer months we’ve seen plans to ease restrictions come and go, local lockdowns enforced in some parts of the country and changes to guidance for those travelling abroad. I’m sure, like me, many of you welcomed the return of restaurants, hairdressers and gyms. However, we’ve also seen some of these establishments close again, due to positive coronavirus cases. This is a stark reminder that we must continue to be cautious, act with common sense and ensure that the sacrifices of the last six months do not go to waste. As the regulations continue to change, so does the police response, and business as usual has certainly returned for officers. Avon and Somerset Police continue to face multiple complex crimes and make difficult decisions to keep local people safe. Although they should be commended for their hard work, unfortunately, our emergency workers also face threat of physical or verbal abuse. This is not

acceptable. During the height of the global pandemic we were all celebrating our emergency workers for their hard work, so let’s not forget their efforts as we emerge into our new normal. One of the crimes that officers continue to face is cybercrime and fraud. Unfortunately criminals have exploited recent changes to the TV licence requirement for over 75s and used it to target vulnerable users with a text message scam. The National Cyber Security Centre has told police that victims are asked to enter various pieces of personal information, including their name, date of birth, home address and banking details, which are then stolen. During the global health pandemic, officers have seen an increase in cybercrime reports so it is more important than ever that we all remain vigilant. To keep yourself safe from fraud, take a moment to think before parting with your money or information, challenge any sus-

picious demands and be sure to take some time to check any requests for money or information. Always remember: the police, or your bank, will never ask you to withdraw money, transfer it to a different account or reveal your full banking password or PIN. If you have been a victim, please report it to Action Fraud: www. actionfraud.police.uk. In my regular catch-ups with the chief constable we regularly discuss concerns around speeding and anti-social driving, which continues to blight our communities. Avon and Somerset Police has a dedicated unit of 55 roads policing officers supporting our neighbourhood teams and, as part of their role, they gather evidence and collate information from local people to identify and target drivers who present the greatest harm to our communities. If you witness any road-related incidents, please do report to the police by calling 101 or reporting online. Reporting your concerns provides the police with

I look forward to meeting you all again soon. In the meantime, remember we are still here for you and we are all working hard to ensure you are safe and feel safe.

n NEWS

Southmead firefighter’s 960-mile charity ride A FIREFIGHTER from Avon Fire & Rescue is attempting to cycle 960 miles in eight days in aid of charity. The journey, which will go from John o’ Groats to Land’s End, will see Luke Matthews cycle for 12 hours a day for the mammoth journey. The aim is to raise £2,500 pounds for The Fire Fighters Charity and Samaritans after Luke lost a close friend to mental health illness over the period of lockdown. The journey is extra special as RAF Corporal Jon Ward passed away just days before he was due to complete a 100 mile run race in aid of the Samaritans. Luke, who serves at Southmead fire station, is not only aiming to raise the money for both charities but also raise awareness of mental health and the impacts it can have. To add to the difficulty of the challenge, Luke will be cycling solo (with a support vehicle), camp along the way and train for the journey in just six weeks. He will set off from John o’ Groats on August 28 and arrive in Land’s End on September 4. Luke said: “Lockdown has been a tough period for everyone – but even more tough for those who are isolated. When I heard that

Jon had passed away, I was devastated. “He was a superb ambassador for fitness, fundraising and our Armed Forces so what better way to honour him than cycling the length of the country.” “This is going to be a really hard challenge but I know he would have done the same. In fact, he would have run it. It is merely a drop in the ocean compared to his fundraising efforts. However, If the funds or awareness

I raise make a difference to just one person, then it’s worth it.” To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/f/ end-to-end-appeal For those wishing to join Luke along the way, he will be arriving in Bristol (having cycled from Stafford) on September 2 and will leave for Hookway from Southmead Fire Station at 7.30am on September 3. Luke will complete the journey to Land’s End the following day.

n FROM OUR MP

Lockdown gives new perspective Your Champion in Bristol I always look forward to the Summer as a chance to get away from Westminster and get back to meeting with constituents across Bristol North West. Social distancing meant I couldn’t connect in the same way as usual, so instead I’ve been meeting with frontline and essential workers from across Bristol to thank them for their hard work in keeping us safe and preparing for the months ahead. We’re lucky to be supported by a diverse range of essential workers across our city. Over the past weeks, I’ve met with teachers, food-bank volunteers, ambulance responders, firefighters, police officers, distribution workers, business owners and more. Each has played a role in helping our community respond to the Coronavirus and their expertise will be essential as we continue to keep case numbers down and recover. I’ll be taking their feedback to Parliament this September and sharing a video about these meetings soon. I’ve also been helping to coordinate Bristol’s economic response to the coronavirus induced recession. In addition to my work on the Bristol Economic Recovery Board, in July I hosted an emergency Jobs Summit with Bristol MPs, the Mayor, key employers and trade unions. Bristol North West’s workers, businesses and employers all contribute to the wider health of the UK economy but we need targeted support to

protect livelihoods and build back better. This is a time of change in Bristol and the lockdown has given us a fresh perspective on how we get around the city. Travel West has launched an engagement window about improving the travel corridor that follows Bus Route 2 connecting Henleaze, Southmead and Henbury to the city centre and Cribbs Causeway. Given the previous problems, I’m pleased to see this early and open style of consultation. If you haven’t already, you have until September 11th to contribute ideas via my website darren-jones.co.uk/ travel-west. Or, to request a paper copy, please contact Travel West on 07775115909 with your name, contact details and request. Your Voice in Parliament: As Parliament returns, we enter an important moment in British politics. As your Voice in Parliament, it’s my job to represent your hopes and concerns in scrutinising

Government to ensure rigour and transparency in their decisionmaking. We seem to have incompetent scandals every other week at the moment, from inadequate decisions in Whitehall in dealing with the pandemic to the exam results scandal which I know affected so many families across my constituency. This Autumn, we have the return to school for young people across the country and the first full budget since the pandemic, which will be the most important budget in modern times. We have a recession like no other, significant job losses, important climate change milestones and the need to scale up testing and tracing in advance of a most challenging peacetime Winter ever. And, of course, we have the self-inflicted no-deal Brexit on the cards for December too. All of this in the context of an uncertain world, our own integrated review into security and defence and a vital Presidential election in the United States. This will be a difficult second half of the year for our country. I say this not to depress you, but to remake the case for competent government, effective

Darren Jones column Parliamentary work and the need for all of us to maintain our sense of community spirit and collective effort. Lastly, I’m asking for your feedback on my work as your MP and the services that my team of staff and I deliver. You don’t just vote for your MPs, you pay for us too, and your feedback helps us improve. You can complete this online at http://darren- jones.co.uk/ survey/ or by dropping my office a line for a paper copy in the post. As always, if you have any questions or need my help just drop me an e-mail on darren.jones. mp@parliament.uk or write to me at the House of Commons. Club Open Day welcomes new bowlers BRISTOL St Andrews Bowling Club’s Taster Session saw nearly 100 adults and children attend an Open Day during the afternoon of August 8 to try out the sport and enjoy the August sunshine. However, thanks to the proactive arrangements taken to make the club at Derby Road COVID 19 safe, Bristol St Andrews have been able to open up areas of the clubhouse and grounds and, following new guidance from Bowls England, were able to host the taster session. Club chairman John Pearce says: “The afternoon was a great success, with coaching spreadout safely across the green. Club members were on hand, and professional coaching and extra equipment generously provided by members of Olveston Bowls

Club and Bristol Arrow Bowls Club. “It was especially welcome to see so many children of all ages coming along and enjoying the sport. There were lots of budding bowlers, and the club will be looking to set up juniors coaching when we are able. The money made on the day from the popular prize raffle will buy a set of junior bowls, to be kept permanently at the club to support this.” In these unusual times, the

club has seen an increase in the playing membership. Not surprising, as bowling is easy to learn, suitable for all fitness levels, takes place outdoors and where it is easy to maintain social distancing. John adds: “It’s also sociable, good fun and, judging by the success of our taster session, is something the whole family can enjoy together.” Over the next couple of months, planned events at

the club include weekly pairs league on Thursday and Friday evenings, club competitions and friendly matches. More taster sessions and open days will be held next year, but it’s still not too late to join, and membership for the rest of the season is at a greatly reduced rate. For more information about membership and club facilities for hire, please see the website https://bsabowls.co.uk/ or call 0117 942 1103.

Church runners clock up the miles to beat lockdown lethargy

SIXTY runners from one church in Bishopston have hit the roads in a bid to outrun one another. The women of Emmanuel Bishopston, an Anglican church in Bishopston, Bristol, challenged the men of the church to run further than them in the month of July. When the competition ended on 31st July, 31 women ranging from 3-60 in age, had clocked up 2,000km beating the men by more than 350km! The two teams which included beginner runners and some more experienced runners, have smashed their initial target of running 1,227km to ‘virtually visit’ a student from their church who is studying abroad in Germany and in the end, managed to ‘reach’ missionary friends in Athens, 3,365km away. Organisers, Rachel and Daniel Eatough, have only lived in Bristol for one year but leapt at the chance to get the competition going: “After three months in lockdown, we felt our church family needed something to work towards together. It has really galvanised the church and the competitive spirit between the men and women has been remarkable! Quite a few of the women were part way through the couch to 5k and this has been just the incentive they were looking for to keep going!” Jim Walford, vicar of Emmanuel Bishopston and a keen runner, adds: “We believe church isn’t just about going to a building for an hour on a Sunday. It is about being a family - a community of people,

united by our faith in Jesus and our love for one another. For this reason, lockdown has been really hard. Our church services have moved online and there has been little opportunity to meet face to face. “The running competition has made a big difference - some people have gone running in pairs, others have returned to running for the first time in years. A couple of teenagers have joined the teams and there have been lots of PBs and banter on the team whatsapp groups! “It would be interesting if there was a way to measure the physical, mental and social benefits of 60 people in one church family going running regularly. We think we must be the fittest church in the South West of England! “We are wondering how we can build on this success of the competition in future months – perhaps opening it to anyone who lives in BS7? In the absence of Park Runs, this sort of virtual running competition could be the way forward. If anyone wants to find out more, I’d love to hear from them.” Sarah Bushell, mother of four, concludes: “The running competition has been a huge blessing to our family in lockdown. Three of my children have gone running and even my husband has added a few kms to the tally. For my 14-year-old son, it has given him a reason to get out and do exercise and he has gone from running a few kilometres to regularly hitting 10km. This was just what we needed after three months of no school.”

Ellie Buckeridge (6) and Toby Buckeridge (4) from Brunel Field Primary School loved being a part of the competition, running with their mum Caz ,who clocked up 200km in July Emmanuel Bishopston is a Church of England church and in normal times, meets at Church of the Good Shepherd, Bishop Road. At the moment, Sunday services continue live on their YouTube channel at 10.30am.

September, 2020 WHILE a global pandemic has turned human life upside down, the fruit trees in Horfield Organic Community Orchard (HOCO) have carried on growing as if nothing has changed. Members had been used to meeting a couple of afternoons a month but this hasn’t been possible since the end of March. Although members have missed the more sociable aspects of larger meetings, most have enjoyed the rewards of regular, solo visits to trees they care for. Sarah Kidd, a HOCO member since 2016, says: “I’ve liked having two Tree Buddies to focus my energy on. My children have loved being in the orchard too. They’ve been watching the fruit develop from blossom, and there’s a friendly robin that visits us while we are weeding. Spotting the different bugs and butterflies is another thrill.” Other members say that the weekly commitment to their trees has helped keep them afloat during these strange and difficult months. Orchard members are currently figuring out how to host a Covid-safe Apple Day

event in October and will provide details soon on the HOCO website. They also know that the coronavirus could scupper their plans, which would be a blow to their finances as Apple Day is the biggest fundraising event of the year. HOCO receives no funding for any core activities

and depends on money raised at events and membership subscriptions to meet costs. Fortunately, the Apple Tree Lady has stepped in with a scheme to raise some funds for the orchard, and to bring advice directly to gardeners. In September and October Shannon Smith, the Orchard Learning

co-ordinator, is available to visit local gardens and allotments for a one-hour fruit tree consultation. The cost is £20, which includes a £5 donation to HOCO. Shannon says: “I’m looking forward to sharing my expertise, and offering down-to-earth advice about fruit trees of all ages and conditions. “I’ll also have a go at identifying mystery apples – a much-loved feature of Apple Day.” An hour with the Apple Tree Lady comes highly recommended by Alison, a new member and Orchard Learning participant, who said: “I’ve learned more about apples in 30 minutes than I have in the whole of my life!” To book a session with the Apple Tree Lady see www. community-orchard.org.uk or call 0117 373 1587.

Simpson Solicitors are a legal firm that specialise in Wills, Powers of Attorney and Probate. They opened a new branch in Westbury-on-Trym High Street (opposite Lloyds bank) in March, due to the large number of clients they already had in our area. John and Michelle Baden-Daintree run the Westbury Office with specialist advisor Leanne Shears and Molly Perks (a legal apprentice). They are all delighted with the shortlisting. Michelle told The Voice: “To be the only firm in the area in the running for the Solicitor Firm of the Year award is great news but not only for us. It

But now is the time to make sure you have up to date protection. We can help with a (COVID-safe) in-person meeting at our ground floor offices, or if you prefer by telephone or Zoom video. “If 2m distancing is possible we can also see you at home or in your garden. At no extra cost our service can now include them coming to your door to provide a “door step signing” service. This is to make sure your new documents are properly signed and witnessed and legally valid – even if you are shielding at home.”

● A well written Will makes sure your wishes are followed if you died unexpectedly. It lets you protect those you love, as you get to decide how to provide for those you leave behind. ● A well prepared Power of Attorney makes sure your wishes are followed if you were injured or became seriously ill and needed to have someone appointed that you trust to act on your behalf and speak up for you. However to work without legal challenge, both Wills and Powers of Attorney need to be prepared in advance in accordance with the strict rules that apply. Simpson Solicitors offer our readers a FREE review meeting to discuss the various options you have for your particular situation. This can include guidance on appointing Guardians for children, as well as protecting what you leave behind from unnecessary inheritance tax

'Golden opportunity' to go traffic-free A SECOND wave of major transport improvements is being proposed to make it easier to walk, cycle and use public transport as part of work to cut air pollution and support social distancing in Bristol. The council has moved quickly to pedestrianise the Old City area and close Bristol Bridge to general traffic, as well as installing new temporary bike lanes in the city centre and widening pavements across the city. Bristol City Council, in partnership with the West of England Combined Authority, has now applied for further government funding to extend and strengthen the temporary work already done. Additional proposals to work with the community and close several neighbourhood roads to through traffic have also been put forward. The proposals would retain access to the roads but prevent through traffic using them by closing one end. The council believes this would give local businesses and residents more space to use the roads, and provide safer walking and cycling routes. While further engagement with the various communities is promised before plans are finalised, some residents are already concerned about these proposals. In a letter to Bristol City Council, Belmont Road resident Martin Laker points out that Overton Road was resurfaced as

recently as August this year and is far too steep for safe cycling in icy weather. Martin states: “It has very little traffic but it does perform an essential function in the management of traffic along Belmont Road. It is therefore difficult to see what possible justification there could be for closing it. “Belmont Road is very narrow and vehicles cannot turn around, and can only reverse with great difficulty. When the road is blocked between 35 and 77, properties in the section 13 to 33 can still exit Belmont Road via Overton Road. Furthermore, vehicles intending to go further can, by this point, see any blockage in the next section and divert down Overton Road, preventing a build up of traffic.” A more favourable view is taken by local residents and businesses in the Cotham Hill area. Resident Harriet Brennan states: “For years on Cotham Hill we have seen the encroachment of increasing two-way traffic, illegal parking and frequent speeding, all forcing pedestrians and cyclists to tolerate a smaller and smaller space to travel, walk and shop. Safe distancing is not possible on this street.” Dan Williams, owner of Coffee + Beer, added his support, stating: “It is a golden opportunity for this vibrant and iconic street to become a flagship of pedestrianisation in Bristol. The suggested plans would definitely be safer for families, attract more shoppers,

Artist's impression of how Cotham Hill could look if the road was pedestrianised (courtesy of Smith Maloney Architects) allow some al-fresco dining options and encourage people to cycle or walk to work safely. The increased footfall would be a major bonus for the local independent businesses.” Sandy Murray of Smith Maloney Architects has produced a set of images to help bring the idea to life: “At Smith Maloney, our hope is that the catastrophic impact of the global pandemic can be used as a catalyst to transform the urban streetscape, allowing local communities and businesses to thrive whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines, whilst also promoting cleaner air and greener spaces. I believe that Cotham Hill could be a benchmark for the sustainable city streets of the future.” Councillor Carla Denyer has

been supporting the project. She explains: “I’ve received an incredible number of emails over the last few months asking for more space for walking and cycling in Clifton Down ward, possibly more than I have received on any other topic. Most of these requests focused on Cotham Hill, because it is such a busy shopping street with narrow pavements and no way for people to do social distancing safely. It has been brilliant to see such widespread support, and to see businesses and residents working together on this.” The interactive mapping tool for people to make comments is available at: www.bristol.gov. uk/covidtransport or email transport.engagement@bristol. gov.uk

n NEWS A NEW charity campaign is launching in September to make cancer care in Bristol the best it can be. Bristol Against Cancer launches on 7 September and features hospital staff, former and current patients, and the people of Bristol and beyond coming together to help cancer patients at Bristol city centre hospitals. It is a campaign by Above & Beyond, the NHS charity for University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW). The charity raises money for things over and above what the NHS can provide, including safe, modern and friendly environments, innovative research, the latest equipment and staff training. Paul Kearney, Above & Beyond CEO, said: “It’s time to talk about the other ‘C’ word. Cancer has continued to affect

the lives of thousands of local people over the last few months. “We need the people of Bristol and beyond to come together again and support cancer

patients across the South West and ensure they get the best care possible.” With help from its incredible supporters, Above & Beyond

plans to invest £2million into cancer services across the hospitals. Paul said: “We want to provide NHS staff in Bristol city centre hospitals with the support, environment, equipment and facilities to deliver the best care to their patients. “We believe in the NHS. But we know it can’t do what it needs to without us. “Please join Bristol Against Cancer and help make cancer care in Bristol the best it can be.” Join Bristol Against Cancer by making a donation. Digital inclusion project provides lifeline AN initiative to combat digital exclusion has helped people to get online by providing laptops to families and individuals. Cotham councillor, Cleo Lake, launched the #GiveNTech campaign during lockdown in May, working with Avon Fire & Rescue, Bristol Waste and local charity DigiLocal. The initiative aims to collect, refurbish and distribute unused IT hardware. Donations such as old laptops or tablets are collected, wiped of data, cleaned, fixed and given to those who need them. DigiLocal have been partners on the project wiping and reformatting laptops whilst Bristol Waste have assisted with PAT testing. Councillor Lake has been pressing Bristol Council departments and WECA for support to ramp up the project and help it to reach the many more people who experience digital exclusion. While lockdown restrictions and the closure of schools has made life more difficult for many families, the burden has not fallen on everyone equally, and the lockdown has exposed existing inequalities such as digital exclusion - the gap between those with and without easy access to computers and the

Cllr. Cleo Lake (left) helps Ashley resident Hazel get connected to the internet with a new laptop internet. For children in families that have no computer or just share a single laptop, or that have poor internet access, keeping up with schoolwork from home can be difficult or impossible. Meanwhile, seniors who are selfisolating but lack internet access or can’t afford a tablet have found themselves suddenly cut

off from their communities and family, and unable to access the online events that have emerged during lockdown. Mimi, a single parent in Ashley, found the scheme had made a big difference to her family as she explains: “It’s allowed my son to access study materials online and helped us to be able to keep in touch

with family both in the UK and overseas which has really helped to keep my mind at rest. It’s also helped me with being able to access services and support over lockdown and, as a single parent, those resources have been invaluable to both my son and I.” Cllr. Cleo Lake said: “As well as providing laptops for children, I have also been assisting elders to get online which has been a joy – it has made a huge difference, with elders being able to socialise again, many of whom have not been outside of their homes since early March. I deliver a weekly creative dance exercise class via zoom and it’s been really nice connecting together – it is just obvious how this boosts wellbeing on many levels.” Cleo is keen to source more laptops to meet demand for the campaign, as she explains: “Anyone with ideas or laptops please do get in touch, any and all support is welcomed. Residents in my own ward of Cotham have been particularly helpful having donated the largest number of laptops. Thank You Cotham!” People or organisations wishing to support the campaign or donate old IT hardware should contact Cleo Lake at cllr.cleo. lake@bristol.gov.uk

Penny Brohn appoints chief executive

BRISTOL based cancer charity Penny Brohn UK has appointed Julie Worrall as their next CEO. Stephen Rosser, chair of Trustees at Penny Brohn UK said: “Julie has a wealth of experience in programme development, income generation and developing strategic partnerships including working alongside the NHS. “We believe Julie’s appointment has the potential to be transformational as she leads Penny Brohn UK through a period of change in order to survive the impact of the coronavirus pandemic to continue to help people live well with cancer. “We are confident that under Julie’s leadership we will find ground-breaking ways to reach more people with cancer - in their home, in their community

and in hospital. People need help now. They cannot wait. By harnessing opportunities in digital technology and health we will extend our services to provide support that reaches far beyond geographical borders.” Currently the director of fundraising and development at Above and Beyond, the official charity for the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust, Julie said: “I am delighted to be the next CEO of Penny Brohn UK. People need more than medicine to cope with all the ways that cancer impacts their life. I believe that everyone affected by cancer should be able to access Penny Brohn’s whole life approach. My own personal experience of cancer, and of working in the health sector, give me a unique perspective and a passion to take this organisation

forward. “Fifteen years ago, at the age of 24, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the ovary. This particular type of cancer was so rare that only 15 people in the UK are diagnosed with it a year. It was a huge shock to us all. However, I was lucky. I received incredible treatment, care and compassion which I will forever be grateful for. It was a devastating experience physically and emotionally that continues to impact me to this day, however it also gave rise to so much good. “Since then, I have dedicated my career to using my professional skills to ‘giving back’. Since my illness I have fulfilled roles at Marie Curie Cancer Care, CLIC Sargent (Young Lives vs. Cancer) and now Above & Beyond, working

with the very hospitals that treated me. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to take my journey full circle and remain driven to turn my experiences into a force for good.”

The Moggery sees huge surge in adoptions by Keri Beckingham A LOCAL cat re-homing centre has seen a huge surge in adoptions during the coronavirus pandemic. The Moggery is located in Bishopston and was founded by Christine Bayka in 1997. Normally the summer months are very quiet for The Moggery, with only two or three residents chosen during this time due to families being on holiday and waiting until September to adopt a new pet. However, as many people were working from home during the crisis, they decided that June and July were ideal times to welcome new cats and kittens into their household, and in comparison 43 cats and kittens left for their forever home in June and 30 in July, which Christine says is amazing. Christine told the Voice: “Prospective homes were interviewed over the phone to make sure that they met our adoption criteria

then photos and videos were sent by email to future adopters before they arrived at HQ wearing masks and gloves. “One family member viewed the future pets at a time, and then a conference took place in the car and a decision was quickly made. The adoption forms and booklet were emailed to the family before they came to The Moggery and the remaining paper work was completed whilst socially distancing. The cat/kittens were then taken to the car where they were greeted excitedly by other members of the family.” Owners have written on The Moggery’s Facebook page about how their new furry friends have settled into their new homes. One wrote: “We’ve had Owen and Bara now Islay and Skye for 5 weeks and are very much enjoying having them around. We’re now getting lots of purrs and love watching them getting up to mischief. Thanks for letting us adopt these two lovely kittens.” Briar (now Bramble) is also loving her new home and has just started venturing out. Her owner lives on a boat, and wrote: “She's very curious about it! Keeps on staring at the reflections and bird life and seems totally comfortable jumping on and off the boat.”

Another owner wrote about kittens McDuff and Grimalkin (who are now known as Juno and Fig): “We are so grateful for The Moggery for putting us together and so pleased we were encouraged to go for two. They really bring out each other's confidence and it's so cute to hear them chirp to each and see them snuggle down in the evenings. Sisters and the best of friends!” To find out more about The Moggery, visit their website: www.themoggery.org.uk

New service for children missing out on support A VITAL new service is being provided for Bristol children and young people who are missing out on support during the coronavirus pandemic. ‘See, Hear, Respond’, managed by Barnardo’s and funded by the Department for Education, is a new programme offering online counselling, therapy and face-to-face support. Anyone can refer a child or young person to the service, which is free and confidential. It aims to provide a “lifeline” for children and young people who are victims of sexual and domestic abuse, criminal exploitation, those struggling with their mental health, children with special educational needs and disabilities, young carers, and those needing help with reintegrating back into school. Barnardo’s is leading a coalition of charities working alongside local authorities, schools, colleges, police forces and healthcare professionals across England. A telephone and online referral service will refer any concerns about a vulnerable child to the local partner organisation best-placed to help. Barnardo’s regional director Sarah Crawley said: “The coronavirus pandemic has meant that vulnerable children and young people have been ‘hidden’ from vital support services. “Many have been suffering in silence and are in danger of being left behind if their needs are not met. “That’s why Barnardo’s is leading a consortium of more than 30 charities to identify and support children at risk of harm. “But for this to work, we need professionals – and anyone in contact with vulnerable children – to be our eyes and ears and refer those in need of help. “Children have too often been unseen and unheard during this crisis and they risk becoming the forgotten victims. “This initiative is a vital lifeline which will help them to navigate the pandemic and its aftermath, improving their long-term prospects so they can enjoy a successful future.” For further information on the See, Hear and Respond service, visit www.barnardos.org.uk/see-hear-respond Helplines are open Monday-Friday from 9am-9pm and at weekends from 10am-6pm. Call 0800 157 7015.

n HOME IMPROVEMENT

Tom Jackson, Commercial Lead

An update from We Care Home Improvements

A

ugust was even busier than July at We Care Home Improvements. It’s been great to have helped even more of our customers with the jobs that make life that little bit easier. Our handypeople helped over 1,229 customers throughout Bristol, Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset and expect September to be even busier. Nigel, one of our handypeople in Bristol, has received some wonderful feedback for his work. “Several patients have wanted to express how happy they were with visits completed by Nigel” Great to hear! Our specialist accessible bathrooms and home adaptations service has also had a busy month. It’s fantastic to

see our customers enjoying their beautiful new space and hearing how it’s made a real difference to their lives. Another happy customer added “I wanted to express my thanks to everyone involved in refurbishing my mum’s bathroom. Apparently the whole showering experience is now a pleasure for her and her carer, rather than a chore”. It’s always lovely to receive good feedback. Do get in touch if you would like any information about our specialist accessible bathroom service. We know the huge benefits they give to our clients.

Bristol, to launch a new initiative to support our veterans. For the next 6 Months we are offering people who have served a range of services at subsidised prices. As we enter into September, we are pleased to be able to invite people to our show room again on an appointment only basis.

E are living through a time, never imagined, and the summer of 2020 will be a defining one. We may not yet fully appreciate the full impact of all these changes, as we cope with overcoming the pandemic. Here are some tips on how to regroup, recharge and prepare for what comes next.

Get out more!

0117 9246579 18 Kellaway Avenue, Westbury Park, Bristol, BS6 7XR

Go outdoors in a socially distanced and responsible way. The easing of the lockdown rules is not a license to revel. It is an opportunity to reconnect – with family, friends and community – add nature too! Being outdoors will help to replenish our vitamin D from sunlight due to our staying indoors extensively. You cannot overdose on vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. Remember to cover up or protect your skin if you're out in the sun for long periods to reduce the risk of skin damage and cancer.

Exercise This column by Jess Williams of Kellaway Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being while also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care.

Walk, run and keep riding – reports of people taking up more exercise during the lockdown has been one of the positives from this period and record numbers giving up smoking. Please don't park your bike. Many have now discovered it is not only going to the gym that helps. Go for walks, at your own comfortable pace.

Value community kindness

Our community has been our lifeline during this

September, 2020 period. You have all supported the Kellaway Pharmacy team, part of your local NHS to find strength and hope, during our exhaustion and sense of isolation from promised resources. We must all continue in the same spirit. Tidying up the community, giving up time to support each other. We have become so much more connected due to our shared vulnerability. Our strength is how, together, we build a better future. Join in!

Get ready for school and winter The best way to get prepared for the next academic year is to have a fun-filled summer. We all deserve this, especially the children. Travelling may have challenges but remember here in Westbury Park, we have a leading South West Travel Health and Vaccination services provider in Kellaway pharmacy. The summer is also an excellent time to sort out vaccinations like chickenpox and Meningitis B. If your travel plans have been delayed, this is the best time to get all the jabs you need. Our price-match promise offers you peace of mind. We are already planning for the autumn and winter months, as some services may scale back to cope, so please act now. Our pharmacy team is here to look after your health, whether close to home, a foreign holiday or gap year. Our lowest cost guarantee is a significant cost saver too. Travel or vaccination queries? n NEWS

‘Art of Resistance’ looks at Bristol's protests THE toppling of the Colston statue has put Bristol under the global spotlight. This, along with the wider Black Lives Matter movement, has led to an outpouring of creative responses - from poetry, to illustration to performance. This is by no means a new occurrence in Bristol, which has been a city noted for its radical art and activism for decades. Capturing that spirit, The Trinity Centre, Old Market, are launching the Art of Resistance project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, exploring the history of protest and activism in Bristol and the art that underpinned each movement. Over a two year project, the project team, led by local historian, writer and curator Dr Edson Burton, will celebrate the creative responses of key movements over the last 100 years - including Women’s

Equality, Workers Rights and Anti-Fascism. A grant of £150,000 will support a broad programme of research, talks, events, artist commissions, exhibitions and the creation of an online archive to chart these untold stories. Edson Burton said: “2020 could not be timelier for the launch of Art of Resistance: we’re really pleased to be able to launch this two year project,

made possible by National Lottery players, at a time of great public movement in the city. We will work with people across the city to document the unofficial histories that are often lost over time and capture Bristol’s creative and activist spirit by exploring the art that underpinned movement that have shaped our diverse city and country.” Trinity will be working with a

number of research partners to realise the project. Dr. Madge Dresser, Honorary Professor of History in the Department of Historical Studies at Bristol University says: “From Bishop Wulfstan to Jen Reid, Bristol has had a long and distinctive tradition of calling out injustice. The arts and music have helped to rally differing groups to ally together against self-serving privilege and callous greed. Given its own history, Trinity is especially well placed to showcase the many ways in which the city and the nation can come to know itself in a more honest and dynamic way.” If you have interesting content, artefacts or stories you would like to share to help Trinity build this picture of movements over the ages, please visit their website to find out more: www.trinitybristol.org.uk/ resistance

Haveyour Will writtenfor freeandsupport your local NHS WE are living through unprecedented times which will shape the way we live and work for a long time to come. The Coronavirus pandemic will also shape the medical landscape and how our NHS can continue to care for our communities. Sarah Harrison, director of Southmead Hospital Charity, said: “Every day I am amazed by my NHS colleagues who save lives and care for patients and their families. “This has been a challenging time for us all and we need to do all we can to ensure future generations won’t face the uncertainties we have.” Leaving the gift of a donation in your Will is a special way to leave your legacy for the future. Your gift could play a vital role in helping your NHS in Bristol plan for the future; transforming lives for generations to come by providing state-of-the-art medical equipment or funding pioneering research. Your gift will ensure patients of the future receive the very best treatment and care. Bill Long decided to leave a gift in his Will as a thank you to the NHS for saving his life He said: “Eight years ago I was treated for prostate cancer at Southmead Hospital and the surgeons saved my life. “Without them I wouldn’t be here today so

I want to give something back to our precious NHS. “The process of leaving a gift in my Will was simple. I owe my life to the NHS and I’m proud that my legacy could save other lives in the future.” Write your Will for free Southmead Hospital Charity has partnered with local solicitors to offer you the opportunity to

n INSIDE OUT

Kinetic sculptures HAVING made purses and jewellery for well over a decade, Kay Morgan is something of an expert when it comes to leatherwork. Recently she has turned her talents to interior decorations too. Some are simple wall hangings, while others are sculptural mobiles and impressively delicate for their size. Kinetic (or moving) sculptures were first experimented with by avant garde artists just prior to and during the 1920s and were a popular element in mid-century interiors. Moving gently with air currents, the effect is mesmerising, a quality that many interior designs are trying to achieve at the moment, to counter all the stresses and pain in the world outside. Kay’s mobile pieces are certainly in this tradition and are a testament to her transferable 3D skills. “I'm really enjoying playing with the different shapes and how hanging pieces in certain ways can really change the balance of the mobile. I like the challenge of working with scale and movement,” she says. In true Bristol style, sustainability is also high on Kay’s agenda. Using only reclaimed leather, having sourced a supply from dog collar production waste, Kay is also continually experimenting with plant-based but plastic-free, alternatives to conventional leather, like cork and pinatex - leather made from pineapple. Nothing is wasted and all her offcuts are reused in different products, often inspiring new designs. Kay even had bespoke cutters made to facilitate scaling up to making the larger pieces.
