Eviction notice for travellers Travellers who have been parked HUNDREDS of teenagers in Henleaze and Westbury are celebrating after scoring impressive results in their A-level and GCSE exams. Among them are the first group of students to complete five years at Bristol Free School, which opened in 2011 following a campaign by parents for a local secondary school. Many of the youngsters will notch up another first this month

when they join the school’s new sixth form. Head teacher Paul Jones said: “It’s having a wider impact beyond the school itself in terms of community cohesion and friendship groups. We are expecting a substantial chunk of pupils, upwards of 75%, to stay with us in the sixth form. There is a gap in terms of sixth form provision in the north of the city, just as there was a gap in the

secondary provision.” Karen Lynch, chief executive of Russell Education Trust, which runs the free school, said: “The parents who worked with us to establish a new secondary school for North West Bristol, can be justly proud of BFS because it is the expanding and high-achieving school for which they campaigned.” Full story: Page 23

A PETITION and Facebook group have been set up in the wake of anger and disappointment about the decision to grant planning permission for a takeaway Domino's Pizza in the centre of Westbury-on-Trym. Over 200 people have signed the petition titled, ‘Stop Domino's Pizza in Westbury-onTrym! Unneeded, unwanted!’ and over 100 people have joined the group, ‘Keep BS9 Local’. Both have been started by resident Georgina Moden who is unhappy the way that the feel of the area had been affected by large chains. She said: “I started Keep BS9 Local because I strongly see the local high street as the cornerstone underpinning the community. I want to live in a thriving local community that cares for the people who live and work within it and instills us with a sense of pride. “I feel I've witnessed the decline of Westbury-on-Trym into a sea of charity shops,

eateries, chain shops and supermarkets and estate agents. These all have their place but the local, community feel of the different 'village' areas of Bristol is being eroded as the high street becomes more and more faceless." It seems improbable that those opposed to the Dominos will be able to overturn the decision as it would involve a costly court battle. The original application, made last summer, was rejected by Bristol City Council planning because of concerns about the impact on the health of young people in the area as well as lack of evidence of adequate parking inviting people to park illegally to visit the shop. That decision was overturned by The Planning Inspectorate, an independent body that deals with appeals to planning applications. The decision made by inspector Rory Cridland was that there would not be significant impact on traffic and parking due to the fact that a take away operates

Team GB gold medal at Rio for Lily Owsley THERE were celebrations all round for former Clifton College pupil, Lily Owsley, who achieved a gold medal in the women’s hockey at the Rio Olympics. The game was decided by a dramatic penalty shoot out, following a tense game against 2012 Olympic champions, the Netherlands. Lily won the sport's rising star award earlier this year beating stiff competition from players in Germany, the Netherlands and New Zealand to take the global young player of the year honour. Clifton College said: “We would like to pass on our huge congratulations to Old Cliftonian Lily Owsley and all of the Team GB women's hockey team for

their amazing Olympic gold medal win. It has been fantastic to see Lily’s progress from her early days on the hockey pitch at Clifton to becoming one of the top athletes in her field. We wish her lots of luck for her ongoing career.”

not easy to stop re determined largely outside of peak hours. He also found that the council had not provided enough evidence to prove the new shop would influence the activity of young people in the area. This has led to anger as residents feel the decision was made over their heads. Councillor Geoff Gollop was unhappy with the way that: “On the one hand we talk about localism and on the other you have a situation where the local council doesn’t have a say and their view is overturned.” Due to the cost it seems unlikely that residents will be able to stop the new pizza take away from opening, although there is still a pending planning application over the signage of the shop which some residents are objecting to. Domino’s, Georgina hopes that her group can form alliances and lobby to keep local businesses at the top of the agenda. She said: “Short to medium term aims include engaging with other groups that might have an interest, such as the local business association or chamber of commerce so that we have strength in numbers, talking to Bristol City Council about any initiatives they might be prepared to help put in place to encourage local business.” “We are also interested in lobbying our MP to encourage further reforms on business tax and holding regular meetings for anyone who is interested to keep them abreast of progress and to seek and act on local, community ideas about how we can make our community even better.”

Eviction notice served on Downs travellers AN idyllic day camping in summer. Take the caravan, park up amidst the grass and the trees and enjoy an outdoors cuppa in the morning sunshine. What could be nicer? It all seems so lovely until you realise that this is no country campsite - it’s Bristol Downs! The caravans belong to a group of European Gypsies, many from France, who have parked them on the corner of Durdham Downs by Parry’s Lane. While the council would be on to rin minutes if we chose to park our cars on the Downs, it has to get official to move the travellers. Henleaze and Westbury Voice readers will be pleased to know that Cllr Geoff Gollop has been briefed by Bristol City Council Security Services that a possession order was granted by the Court on August 23 and was

being served on August 24. The order required the travellers to move their caravans and cars by 10am on Friday, August 26, or be forcefully evicted. The travelling community arrived in Bristol in early August

and set up site in Bedminster, Horfield Common and Lockleaze but have recently moved on to the Downs. The group came to Bristol originally to pay respect to Violet Crumlish, their “Traveller

Queen” who was being treated for terminal bowel cancer at a Bristol hospital. She has now returned to Ireland but the travellers remained as Voice went to print it is hoped, not for long.

Kennel cough KENNEL Cough, also known as Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis, is a condition in dogs causing chronic coughing. It isn’t just spread in kennels, but is a highly infectious disease that can affect any dog. Kennel Cough is caused by the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica, the viruses Canine Parainfluenza, and Canine Adenovirus 2 (CAV-2), as single agents or in combination. Any situation where multiple dogs are coming into close contact, particularly if dogs keep coming and going, is ideal for spreading the disease. Such situations include: Rescue centres, Boarding kennels, Pet shops, Dog groomers and Dog shows. However, any dog is potentially at risk, as all three major organisms can survive long enough in the environment to spread between dogs on footpaths, in parks or other public spaces. The most obvious clinical sign is a persistent ‘hacking’ cough, due to irritation of the windpipe and larynx, this is often followed by retching or gagging or bringing up clear fluid. Other than this, dogs usually appear almost normal, except perhaps for a reduced appetite, and being slightly off colour or lethargic. Occasionally the primary infection allows a secondary pneumonia to develop, with high fever, difficulty breathing,

collapse and dehydration. This is more serious and requires prompt treatment. In many cases, the condition is self-limiting and will go away on its own. However, the cough may persist for up to three weeks. We use anti- inflammatory medication as a symptomatic treatment and occasionally anti biotics to suppress Bordetella infections, as well as preventing a more serious secondary infection. There is a widely used vaccine that is given up the nose (Bordetella combined with Parainfluenza). It lasts a year and reduces both the risk of infection and the severity, but does not give complete protection to all dogs. The Canine adenovirus is covered in the core vaccines by injection.

Pop-up shop for artists in Westbury WE Make Bristol is a platform for artists and creators hosting monthly pop-up-shops in Westbury-on-Trym Methodist Church. It was founded by Amanda George, who has moved back to Bristol after finding success as an artist in London. Amanda decided to begin the project after she discovered that artists like her, who create high quality product, but have not necessarily been recognised by galleries, were not well catered for in Bristol. “What I found was that when I moved back to Bristol was there were three kinds of crafty people. There are hobbyists and there are artists who appear in galleries, shows and exhibits. Then there is a middle section of people who are very good and take what they do very seriously but don't appear in galleries and charge hundreds of pounds for their work.” Amanda wanted to make clear that this event was not your average craft fair by any measure and that the art available would be of a high standard. “For example, we have a ceramacist who has just been accepted on the Craft Council

which is a huge accolade. So what you can expect from our pop-up markets is shop quality goods at affordable prices,” she said. Amanda is running the event not for profit and is charging the minimum for artists to set up stalls. She added: “These artists can’t always afford to charge an amount that will reflect how much time it has taken to make these things and from my experience is good if you don’t have to worry about making £50 just to cover your stall fee.” Available at the first event were mugs, phone cases and illustrations from pen and ink artist Cai Burton and photography from Jessica Siggers who goes under the name PorthJess and runs the Bristol instagram network. As well as these there were silk bow ties, cakes and jewellery. A full list of creatives and events can be found on their website http://wemakebristol. co.uk/. The next event is on Saturday September 3 at Westbury-on-Trym Methodist Church.

Roger's ready to tackle Great North Run to raise funds for Bristol medical charity

KEEN runner Roger Farrow from Henbury has set himself the challenge of running the Great North Run on September 11. Roger has run numerous half marathons before, but is particularly looking forward to this one as he will be running to raise at least £500 for a charity local to him in Bristol. Roger said: "I have decided to do it in aid of the Capella Foundation, which is part of the 'Mother and Baby Trust' based at St Michael's Hospital, Bristol. This charity was set up in February 2013 to increase awareness of medical complications during pregnancy, especially when mothers are carrying twins, and offer support to those affected." Roger, aged 36, is Bristol born and bred and a keen Bristol City supporter. His main dream as a child was to be an athlete and

Roger Farrow he won the GWR half marathon at the age of eight. He has run the Bristol half-marathon and in 2012 ran five half marathons, one for each of the Olympic rings. Dubbed by some as the greatest half marathon in the world, the Great North Run

sees over 57,000 people take part in the race, which will take runners across the Tyne Bridge and through various parts of Newcastle, Gateshead and South Shields. Roger plans on completing the Great North Run in a very respectable time of 1 hour 50 minutes. He said: “I’ve always wanted to better my time in the Bristol Half Marathon - which is my personal best at 1 hr, 47 minutes. I have never been to Newcastle before so it would be nice to have a weekend away, raise some money and to come home with a 'Great North Run' medal.” Roger is a very active person who, as well as training at the David Lloyd Centre in Westbury, also lifeguards there. With his training in Sports Science he has developed a good technique to keep himself motivated over long distances.

“When I run I imagine a close friend running next to me. It’s mind over matter and emotionally it could get really depressing. I often feel quite negative on the start line and need to get warmed up before I speed towards the end. “It’s the crowds of people who keep me going and those running beside me. "I can always try and chase the person running in front or if tired slow down to the person running behind. “When I finish I feel as though I’ve passed a milestone and can keep running forever. I find I can pass the pain barrier and keep on running.” If you would like to keep Roger motivated there is a charity tin in the Cotham Sandwich shop in Kingsdown or go online at https://mydonate. bt.com/fundraisers/rogerfarrow1

Memories of school days in Victoria's new novel BADMINTON Old Girl, Victoria Fox, has released her latest blockbuster, ”The Santiago Sisters”. Victoria’s books are highly paced stories full of drama and romance and are a great summer read. This is a story about sibling rivalry which asks the question: just how far would you go to get the life you’ve always wanted? Twins Calida and Teresita Santiago have never known a world without each other...until Teresita is wrenched from their

Argentinian home to be adopted by world-famous actress Simone Geddes. Now, while Teresita is provided with all that money can buy, Calida must fight her way to the top as a photographer - her only chance of reuniting with her twin. Victoria recently returned to live in Bristol with her husband and one year old daughter. She attended Badminton School from the age of 13 and loved it. It was all helpful experience to draw on when writing the boarding school

Valentino

section in the book. She said: “I was nervous about going there but as soon as I arrived I found the most wonderful school and group of friends. It was a nice, aspiring place to be and many a tea-time was spent hanging around the sweet-shop in Henleaze.” Inspiration for novels has often come to Victoria from far away places, exploring the grit and glamour of a location. She honeymooned in Argentina riding wild ponies in Patagonia and knew that she wanted to set her latest book there and write about sibling rivalry. She explained: “The relationship between sisters is special - an undercurrent of rivalry, trust, and they know each other’s thoughts. I wanted to explore how they reconcile after so much heartache and what it means for their relationship.” Victoria writes racy romances in the style of a very popular, recently departed, novelist. “My first inspiration was the huge love affair that I had with Jackie Collins novels. I loved the idea that your imagination was the only limit. For me, it’s the joy of a beach reach and I wanted to create that for myself,” she said. Writing The Santiago Sisters with a young daughter at home took Victoria completely out of her comfort zone. Before she had a baby she wrote between 9am - 5pm and took evenings and

weekends off. “Now I write when I have childcare. If I have cover, I write in the day but otherwise I snatch time here and there when she’s asleep. Whereas before I’d procrastinate before I started, I’ve learned that what matters is getting stuff on the page. “Work reminds me of who I am - I love it. It has nothing to do with looking after a little baby - there are no nappies or milk to deal with!” she added. The Santiago Sisters is a paperback original published by Harlequin MIRA.

News Exhibition at Bristol Cathedral explores Great War parcels AN exhibition of the work of textile artists celebrating the World War One postal service opens this month at Bristol Cathedral. Sally Stanley, Paula New, Jane Marie-Mahy, Lucy Saunders and Jane Kay have used mixed media to recreate the atmosphere of the time, including knitting from original wartime patterns. In addition, GCSE Textile students from Cotham School have helped to represent some of the other items in the parcels. Sally Stanley said: “All the artists had an interest in social history and a love of textiles. They found inspiration in the ongoing commemorations of WW1 and developed a fascination for the contributions made by the women at home. Their exhibition includes textile parcels, appliqué , embroidery, printmaking and knitting. All

the sewing and knitting has been done by hand to create an empathy with that era.” The subject has been carefully researched using the names of soldiers featured in the Cathedral’s First World War remembrance project We Have Our Lives and in the book ”Letters From the Trenches” by local author Jacqueline Wadsworth. The British Army considered delivering letters and parcels to the Front as important as delivering rations and ammunition. The morale of the fighting men depended heavily on letters and parcels which provided an essential link between those at home and abroad. Indeed, reassurance was needed from both sides that they were in each other’s thoughts. As the war dragged on army food got more sparse and dreary

and the regulation clothing was woefully inadequate for the cold and mud of the trenches. Mothers, sisters, sweethearts and women’s groups sent warm clothes, food, sweets and tobacco

to the soldiers. Parcels of Comfort is on display at Bristol Cathedral from 9 September 2016 – 8 January .2017.

1300 years of Westbury-on-Trym – a celebration IN 717AD a church was established in Westbury-onTrym. A church has stood on this site continuously since then, the present one being constructed in the 13th century and added to and enlarged in the 15th century. Over the years it maintained a steady presence in the area and because of this, Westburyon-Trym grew and prospered to become the community it is today - one of the best places to live and work in. 2017 Committee member, Bridget Niblett said: “What makes it so wonderful today? You, of course. All of you who live here, engage in clubs and associations, work in the various businesses, visit the shops, cafes and pubs, walk and play in the park and Badock’s Wood, admire the fantastic floral displays. “We want to include all of you in the celebrations of 1300 years of Westbury-on-Trym. Ideas being talked about are of an art or photography display,

The local schools have agreed to take part. Westbury Library will have displays and there will be publicity in the Village and the media. Red Maids' joy

UNDERGRADUATE places at some of the world’s top universities have been secured by dozens of Red Maids’ students following the release of this summer’s A Level and IB results. 18-year-old Kate Seaborne, from Westbury-on-Trym, will be following in the footsteps of her sister Jenny – also a former Red Maid - and heading off to Oxford University to study Psychology. Joining her in winning an Oxbridge place is International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) student Lily Rivers, who is still only 17. She will be taking up a place at Cambridge University to study History after a year out volunteering overseas. Red Maids’ combined A Level and IB results this year demonstrate consistently high levels of academic achievement: • 17% of all entries were awarded an A* grade • 45% of all entries won an A*

or A grade • Over 75% earned an A*, A or B grade. • More than 37% of all students gained three or more A* or A grades or equivalent IB Higher Level scores. Isabel Tobias, Headmistress at the Westbury-on-Trym based school, said: “These results are tremendous. They are the result of much hard work and determination by our students, coupled with expert tuition and support by our teachers. “The difference of a Red Maids’ education is the progress that we are able to achieve in our students, enabling them to realise their full potential.” Degree choices of the Year 13 leavers include aerospace engineering, architecture, biochemistry, English and drama, geography, history, law, maths and medicine.

QEH record breakers! PUPILS at Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital (QEH) are celebrating after another set of outstanding A-Level results with the highest number of A* grades the school has seen to date. For the 11th year running the pass rate at the school is 100%. This success has extended right across the curriculum. The Science and Art departments both have much to celebrate – not only have pupils from both departments achieved excellent results, but they are also preparing to move into the new £3million Science and Art Building. Nearly three quarters of all grades awarded in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) were A*/A grades and 100% of students studying Art and Design and Photography achieved A*/A grades. Stephen Holliday, Headmaster at QEH, said: “In a year when we are signing up our first cohort of Sixth Form girls, I am delighted to once again see success across all areas of the curriculum. ” Over 10% of students will be taking up places at Oxbridge in September. Michael Savery achieved 4 A* grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. He looks forward to taking up his place at Cambridge University (Queens’ College) to study Mathematics. papers were graded as an A* or A allowing a significant proportion of students to proceed to the very best universities. Executive Principal Alistair Perry said: "We are delighted with the achievements of all of our students and proud of the exceptional young women they have become. We wish them every success in the next stage of their lives.”

Emma is on her way to Oxford

A STUDENT from City of Bristol College is set to go to University of Oxford to study English Language and Literature having achieved outstanding results in her A-level studies. Having suffered from anorexia since the age of 12 and received hospital education for a number of years, in September 2013 Emma Wherrett was finally well enough to join City of Bristol College. Despite initial low confidence and self-belief, Emma managed to achieve four GCSEs and one AS in her first year of study. Following her initial success, Emma felt encouraged to continue her studies towards A Levels in History, English Literature, English Language and Film Studies. Having just received A grades in these subjects, Emma will soon be packing to go and study English Language and Literature at University of Oxford. She said: “My parents are really proud of me. To all of us this is more than getting a qualification; getting my results signifies how far I’ve come. My A Levels have helped me overcome something that had taken hold of my life. It’s helped me finally give life a go and, for the first time, I’m excited about the future.” This year, City of Bristol College has achieved an overall pass rate of 98% on A2 Level subjects, a 4% increase in comparison to last year. In addition, College students achieved a 100% pass rate in 16 out of 20 subjects, including: Art and Design, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Economics, English Language, English Literature, Film Studies, Further Mathematics, Government and Politics, Law, Mathematics, Media Studies, Physics, Psychology and Religious Studies.

Outstanding A-level results at North Bristol Post 16 Centre NORTH Bristol Post 16 Centre, based at Redland Green and Cotham Schools, has gone from strength to strength with outstanding A level, Pre U and BTEC results. Marian Curran, Director of the North Bristol Post 16 Centre, said: “We have once again enjoyed scenes of elation and happiness here as students received their results. We are very pleased to see the percentage of students achieving the highest grades is above the national average. This is true not only at A*-A grades, but also at A, B and C grades. “We are particularly proud of our students who have overcome personal adversity to achieve great success. "Their hard work, commitment and determination has paid off and the vast majority of students have gained places at their first choice University. “In the context of the well-documented and greater challenge in A levels and BTECs, to have held our strong position and seen an increase in the highest grades is truly outstanding. "We are equally proud of the fact that we support a very broad range of students, including those with modest starting points, making these outcomes and the progress our students make, all the more impressive.” Sarah Baker, head teacher at Redland Green School, stated: "We are thrilled for our students at the North Bristol Post 16 Centre for their outstanding results, which are due to students' dedication and hard work and the inspiration and motivation provided by staff." In over 29 subjects there was a 100% pass rate with 38

students achieving A*-A’s in 3 or more of their A-levels. Nine students will be taking up their offers of places at Oxford and Cambridge and eleven students, some of whom are from partner schools, will begin courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. "A large proportion of students have successfully secured Russell Group university places. Marian Curran added: “This year we have also continued to see a rise in the number of students achieving outstanding results, who have been successful in securing places on competitive and highly prestigious Apprentice schemes, examples of these are with Bishop Fleming and the BBC. “Students were also highly successful in their BTEC courses, securing a 100% pass rate with over three quarters of grades at Distinction* and Merit. We are particularly pleased that students from partner schools (Fairfield, Henbury, Orchard School and Oasis Brightstowe) have done so well this year. “In Further Maths, Chemistry, Economics, French, German, Mathematics, Ancient History, and in our performing arts and arts based courses the results were brilliant with over 60% of students gaining A*-B grades. Mathematics and science represent one in three of all entries. The results in these subjects were a real strength of the centre, reflecting the specialisms of the two schools.” “We want to congratulate all our students and wish them well as they take up their next steps at university, employment, begin their gap year and their future careers.”

Redland Green students find right formula for success STUDENTS at specialist science school, Redland Green, have achieved excellent GCSE results, with nearly all the students (98%) achieving at least one science GCSE at grade C or above with 91% achieving two. Of those who took triple sciences, 79% of the students achieved A or A* grades. Ninety per cent of all students achieved the new headline basic measures of a C or above in both English and maths GCSE, with 93% of students passing English with A*-C grades and 91% passing maths with A*-C grades. Using the old measures, 84% of students achieved 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths on their first entry, with 88% achieving this in their best entry. All groups of students have made excellent progress this year from their starting points and this progress exceeds national expectations. The school is particularly proud that its disadvantaged students made progress in line with or better than non-disadvantaged students

nationally, based on last year’s figures. Sarah Baker, head teacher, said: “I am so proud of all our students and their superb results this summer. They have worked so hard and deserve every success. “I am delighted that these results carry on the trend

of excellent achievement by Redland Green students and I would like to congratulate students, staff and parents and look forward to seeing most of these students enrolling in our equally successful Post 16 Centre or wish students luck on the alternative courses some are following.”

Free School's first GCSE results BRISTOL Free School celebrated its first set of GCSE results with 66% of students gaining A*-C in both English and Maths. There were some exceptional sets of results including: James Beggs with 10 A*s and 3 As, Lianne Tagudin with 6 A’s and 4 As, and Daniyal Tariq with 5 A*s and 6 As. They are excited to be progressing on to the brand new BFS Sixth Form in September, along with their peers and students from across the north of the city. Head teacher Paul Jones said: “I’m very proud of Year 11; they are a truly comprehensive and inclusive year group, 76 of whom were with us on the day we opened in September 2011. These results are an excellent achievement using both the old measure of 5 A*-C and the newer, which will reflect students’

impressive progress in English, Maths and Science.” Pupil Portia Neville had just collected her results at the school. She said: “It went pretty well mostly As and one A*. I think as a whole year group we’ve tried really hard as it’s the school’s first year of results and we know it matters.” Mr Jones added: “There is a degree of pressure that goes with the fact that we are a free school and we were probably the first free school to open. The aim here is to provide high quality, inclusive education for young people in this area - that’s my focus. "We are expecting a substantial chunk of pupils, upwards of 75%, to stay with us in the sixth form." High achiever, James Beggs, had plenty to celebrated with

his stellar results surpassing his expectations. “I feel very happy and quite surprised. I thought a couple of the exams were a bit of a disaster but the course work must have helped,” he said. Sam Buckler, from Westburyon-Trym, was pleased with his results overall. “They went really well, especially my Maths, which was never my best subject. My teacher encouraged me to aim for a grade B as I needed it to go on to do Economics, and I got it,” he said. Before Bristol Free School was built, students from the main feeder schools of Elmlea, Henleaze, Westbury-on-Trym and Little Mead were going on to 16 or more destinations at the end of Year 6 - some to North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

23 Independents' day in GCSE spotlight A THIRD of the year group at The Red Maids’ School – 21 girls – gained a clean sweep of A*s and A grades at GCSE. Among them are Ella Harrison and Rachel Hyde who secured A* in 11 subjects, and Arabella Atkins, Lauren Figes-Jones, Rebecca Griffiths, Kate Hamilton, Anna Matthews, Anjali Mehta and Rosy Owens who scored A* in 10 subjects. Furthermore, 89% of all entries gained an A*, A or B grade. Headmistress Isabel Tobias said: “ I am absolutely delighted. These are really strong academic results which show just how well the girls and their teachers work together." Bristol Grammar School students achieved fantastic results in their GCSE examinations. For the fifth consecutive year, over 70% of students gained A–A* grades with more than 40% of them achieving the highest A* grade. Eighteen students secured 10A* or more while 72 individuals were awarded eight or more As or A*s. Ninety per cent of GCSE entries achieved A*–B grades. Nineteen subjects achieved in excess of this figure, covering the humanities, sciences and modern languages and the creative arts (Art, Music, Dance and Drama), which are going from strength to strength. HeadmasterRoderick MacKinnon said: “We are delighted that our students have once again excelled in a wide range of subjects. They have produced phenomenal results, while involving themselves in a rich variety of co-curricular activities ." Redland High School for Girls has had another impressive year for GCSE Results, with 63% of grades being the top A*/A mark. In Latin every girl gained an A* grade and in Biology, Chemistry and Physics the pass rate was 100%. Overall, 94% of pupils gained at least one A/A* grade in their results. Headmistress Stephanie Ferro says, “In what has been a momentous year in Redland High’s history, the achievements that we see here today can be attributed to ties of friendship between our girls and supportive partnerships between a pupil’s home and school life. ”

Fantastic chance for talented young Bristol musicians to learn from the world's best YOUNG Bristol musicians will benefit from a new partnership with a global leader of creative and professional practice Guildhall School of Music & Drama. The Bristol Centre for Young Musicians opens this month and will work in partnership with the city’s music education hub, Bristol Plays Music. The Bristol Centre will be one of five branches of Centre for Young Musicians based outside of London, and is part of an ongoing national expansion of the Guildhall School’s provision for musicians under the age of 18. The Centre, based at both Bristol Cathedral Choir School and Henbury School, offers young musicians aged between 11-17 a broad programme of activities. The staff will include music teachers from

the Guildhall School. Pupils will also benefit from visiting music teachers from other conservatoires, including the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and players from some of the UK’s leading orchestras. Phil Castang, Head of Bristol Plays Music, the city’s music education hub based at Colston Hall, said: “BCYM offers Bristol’s young musicians an incredible opportunity to learn from some of the best established and emerging music teachers in the country. Bristol Cathedral Choir School and Henbury School have excellent facilities and we are very proud to be working in partnership with the famous Guildhall School and its Centre for Young Musicians on this project. “One of our aims is to support talented young musicians

to perform in front of large audiences. The Colston Hall’s transformation will enable young musicians, like those from the Bristol Centre, to both learn and perform in world class facilities in the future.” Stephen Dagg, Director, CYM National Strategy, said: “I am delighted that the Young Artists’ division of the Guildhall School, in partnership with Bristol Plays Music, is launching this new branch of CYM. It is a great pleasure to be working closely with Bristol Plays Music and Bristol Cathedral Choir School to develop strong links between the Guildhall School’s many and diverse ensembles, local schools and existing Saturday provision.” Colston Hall’s £45 million transformation plans will enable Bristol Plays Music to expand its current music education offering in the future, reaching more

young people and introducing further programmes. The Hall’s redevelopment includes a new world-class learning centre that will engage school children and adults from all backgrounds and all levels of ability.

News Neon Night Walk in Leigh Woods BRISTOL anti-trafficking charity, Unseen, is inviting the people of Bristol to join its super-bright Neon Night Walk to highlight modern slavery. The event will take place in Leigh Woods on Saturday 22 October and the challenge is to walk (or run) as many times as you can around a 2.5km route in 6 hours, from 6pm until midnight – dressed, of course, in your brightest neon! Teams can walk together, do it in relay or a mixture. Participants are asked to raise funds for Unseen’s work with women and men who have been trafficked, exploited and enslaved, not just in Bristol but across the UK. The charity operates two specialist 24-hour safehouses (one for women and a newly opened one for men) and a resettlement service to help survivors transition into independent living in the community. Rebecca Wingate-Saul, a local organiser for the charity, said: ‘I’ve been living in Bishopston for five years and working with Unseen for four of them. I wanted to work with a local charity because I can directly see the work I’m raising funds for. Unseen is growing rapidly, which is why we’re running this event – to not only increase awareness

that modern slavery is happening in Bristol, but also to introduce people to a charity that’s doing fantastic work with some of its most vulnerable survivors – and to help us keep it going by raising funds!’ The money raised from the event helps

to provide one-to-one support for survivors struggling to get their lives back on track, counselling, and help with clothing and necessities. To find out more, visit www.unseenuk.org or contact nnw@unseenuk.org

News and views from our City Councillors Clare Campion-Sm it (Westbury-on-Trym & h Henleaze) THIS month I am highlig hting the issue of waste, recognising that it is a matter of concern to some res idents. While councillors do their bes t to address issues, they have no ma gic wands to resolve every problem! The Bristol Waste Comp any Ltd. was established in 201 5 to run waste collection, street cleans ing and winter gritting. The waste ser vice transferred from Kier (formerly Ma y Gurney) who had succeeded SITA. BW C is a wholly owned Council company and , at the cabinet meeting in August, Ma yor Rees agreed that BWC should run the se services for the next 10 years. An integrated package was agreed inc luding customer engagement and educat ion, dealing with and resolving complaints , managing the sales of recyclable ma terial and managing the Household Waste Recycling Centres. The report is on the Co uncil web-site

and contains an interes ting PowerPoint presentation at the end . The 10 year agreement allows for a long term approach afte r some years of instability. Councillors and the public are expecting a consisten t and good service. The main concerns from local residents are missed collections, street cleaning (or lack of it), getting rid of weeds and, before too long, the clearing of fallen leaves. I have been chasing the company for their street cleaning policy, including a rota so that we can manage our expectations and monitor standards . Westbury and Henleaze residents are good at recycling, we care about litter and given the right information from the com pany, I believe that we will do our bes t to keep our community looking goo d. Some parts of it though are looking rather too green as a result of weeds! BWC provide a weed treatment service twice a year, usually in the spring/ summer months, in wh ich each road across the City is visited . The first citywide treatment sta rted in April this year and was completed at the end of

31

July. The controlled droplet application method used means that only visible weeds are sprayed. There has been considerable regrowth in some areas since treatment. The starting date for the second treatment is not known at present. Once weeds start to die back, the local street cleansing crews should remove them as part of their dut ies. However, if residents and counci llors have no idea when roads were done and when cleaning is taking place, it is difficult to monitor the effectivene ss of this regime or the way the staff are car rying it out. Leaf collection is carried out as a normal part of street cle aning with no special service to clear large falls. In the warmth and wetne ss of last autumn, many leaves composted in the gutters ideal for weed seedlin gs! Clearly we need transpa rency in the operation of BWC and I am pursuing this.

News In 100 days, we’ve pointed to a more inclusive city

A

LOT can happen in 100 days. It’s been about that long since I was elected   Bristol mayor, and in that time we’ve had Brexit, a new prime minister and a £1bn devolution deal for our region agreed in principle. In that whirlwind of context I’m amazed at how much we’ve achieved locally. There have been real actions, both large and small. These all send a clear message that this will be a fairer, more inclusive city where everyone has a chance to feel the benefits of our success. In some cases small gestures speak volumes: like allowing blue badge holders to park in residents’ parking bays without fear of a fine, or buying back a former council flat in Lawrence Hill to once again make it available to a family on the waiting list. Other actions not only help us now, but lay groundwork for the future – like taking 80 hectares of public

henleaze&westburyvoice

The Mayor’s View Each month Bristol mayor Marvin Rees shares his views with Bishopston Voice

land off the market so we can build more homes; reviving plans for a new recycling centre on Hartcliffe Way; or installing the first parts of a city-wide heat network to supply tenants of 1,000 social housing flats with low carbon, fairly-priced heat. A change close to my heart was launching a review into housing priority for domestic abuse survivors.

September, 2016 It all adds up, and one of my big takeaways from 100 days as mayor is that the city works best when it works together. So I’ve met 75 partners to talk about setting up a City Office where different organisations can work more closely together to solve big issues. We’re already working across public, private and voluntary sectors to respond to Brexit; and this is just the first of many topics where the best result for Bristol can be achieved if we pool our power, money and ideas. None of us has a magic wand or all of the answers. Nor can we pretend there aren’t massive challenges ahead. I have inherited a huge financial challenge which is proving bigger than anyone anticipated. I will be making sure the council builds on what’s previously gone well and fully understands where more progress needs to be made. That doesn’t take away the issue, but it does help us respond, as does the city-wide budget simulator I launched to involve more people in the challenge. I’m really grateful to everyone who took part, because those ideas are now being shared widely to help the council plan for the future. The situation is too serious to describe being mayor as exciting. But it is busy, fulfilling, challenging and really, truly rewarding. I have high hopes for our city and what we can achieve together. I hope many of you will be part of it.

Free gala concert to celebrate 60th birthday of Colston Hall's magnificent pipe organ BRISTOL'S magnificent concert pipe organ in the Colston Hall celebrates its 60th birthday this year. This amazing instrument has 5372 pipes, ranging from the size of a drinking straw up to a whopping 32ft long! Placed behind a grille above the stage the pipes are pretty much hidden from view to the audience, but they certainly get heard when played from the organ console, which has four keyboards, a pedal keyboard, and almost 100 'stop' knobs for the player to operate. Built by Harrison and Harrison of Durham in 1956, it's one of the world’s famous concert hall organs. We all get the chance to hear it for FREE on Tuesday 20 September when Richard Hills, a brilliant performer, who is equally at home in both classical and theatre style, will

be the headline performer at this concert which kicks off at 7.30pm. This will probably be the last dedicated organ concert

before the Colston Hall closes for its major refurbishment mid-2017. Richard, a globally acclaimed musician, has appeared

many times on national and international TV and Radio, including at the Royal Albert Hall, giving a solo recital in the 2013 Proms, the first ever to feature lighter organ repertoire. Concert organiser and compere for the evening Chris Mansfield said: “Don't miss this exciting mix of old, new, melodious and loud music which has the magic of giving goose bumps to the audience!” This concert is absolutely free, no ticket or booking is required - just come along. A charity collection will be taken during the evening for the IAO Benevolent Fund and the Colston Hall Organ Concert Fund. Church appeals for clothing for Syria and Iraq THE Church in Westbury Park have registered with Samara’s Aid to organise another clothing appeal for Iraq and Syria. They received a massive response when they put out an appeal in January and were overwhelmed by the generosity of local people. The aid goes to those living in displacement camps, often in freezing conditions. Warm clothes are a priority as well as coats, snow wear, boots, shoes, baby equipment, sanitary products, blankets, duvets and wheelchairs. Everything sent should be in excellent condition, clean with working zips and buttons, stain free with no holes. The Church are taking donations and have asked local residents to start looking now for clothes and other items to donate. Items need to be taken to the Methodist Church rather than St. Alban’s from September 5th - 30th. A donation towards transport costs of between £5£10 is requested and should be

posted through the office door at the Methodist Church. It costs £6,500 to send each lorry to the Middle East.

One way of supporting the appeal is to put together a personalised care pack of new items for an expectant mother, a

baby or a family. The care packs will be sent to displaced people, refugees and people in need of humanitarian assistance in Syria and Iraq. Information about what to put in the care packs can be found on the Samara's Aid website. Banana Boxes are also needed so if your supermarket has any, contact Abigail Shepherd at the Church Office to arrange delivery of the boxes to the Methodist Church. The Church are thinking of arranging packing sessions once or twice a week to keep on top of the packing rather than leaving it all to the end. Contact the Church Office if you would like to help with the packing so that a rota can be drawn up. A fundraising Syrian Dinner for the community is also being considered by the Church. To contact the church call 0117 973 1562 or email office@ westburyparkchurch.org

OVO Energy announced as Bristol sponsor for the Tour of Britain IN what is expected to be one of the biggest sporting events in Bristol’s history, the city will host Stage 7 of the Tour of Britain on Saturday 10 September with the world’s top cyclists taking on an individual time trial and circuit race on a 15 kilometre route in and around the city centre. Household names like Mark Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins will be taking part in the race alongside other professional cyclists who are currently battling it out this week in Rio for Olympic medals. Bristol-based energy supplier OVO Energy is the lead sponsor for the Bristol leg of the Tour of Britain 2016. Stephen Fitzpatrick, OVO’s founder and CEO, commented: "We're proud to be part of the thriving Bristol business community, and the Tour returning for the second time is testament to what a great city this is.” As part of the partnership, OVO will be organising a special family-friendly fundraising event which will take place between the morning time trials and the full circuit road race in the afternoon. All monies raised by OVO in the lead up to and during

the event will be used by the company’s charitable arm, the OVO Foundation, for a new youth homelessness project in Bristol. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: "I'm delighted that OVO Energy is supporting the Tour of Britain’s visit to Bristol next month. With a full day of racing around our city this will be one of the biggest sporting events in Bristol’s history and a chance for the whole city and visitors to come together to watch the cycling elite grace our city streets completely free of charge.” Councillor Mark Bradshaw, Bristol City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, added: “The tour’s visit this year will be a great event for Bristol and for cycling sport worldwide. " We are confident it will be a fantastic spectacle with thousands of spectators lining the route.” One OVO employee and avid road racer, Matt Franklin, will be leading the OVO Cycling team as they ride the route of the Bristol leg and place it on the Strava map to commemorate the Tour coming to the city and open the route up to other Bristol cycling fans both before and after the Tour has visited.

Last chance to see St Alban’s Players' award-winning show POPULAR amateur theatre group, St Alban’s Players, are fundraising for a new stage apron for St Alban's Church Hall. The apron, which is part of the stage that extends out towards the audience, which will cost approximately £6,500 to replace. Their upcoming fundraising event is a final chance to see this summer’s award-winning play, Jimmie Chinn's 'Interior Designs', on Thursday 8th September, at the Trevor Smallwood Theatre at Colston Girls’ School. St Alban’s Players, who have been producing award-winning amateur theatre in Westbury Park since 1973, had a historic

Keeping Badock's Wood lovely Friends of Badock's Wood (FOBW) have received a grant from Henbury, Brentry & Southmead NP Wellbeing Fund for the design, printing and delivery of a leaflet to encourage and advise people how to take greater care of Badock's Wood Local Nature Reserve. The leaflet will remind people not to fly tip waste in the reserve, nor to put anything down the street drains as they all run into the nearest river, something which many people don't realise. Some members of the group are also dealing with the highly invasive non-native species, Himalayan Balsam, which likes damp ground such as riversides. Although it can appear attractive, producing clusters

of purplish pink helmet-shaped flowers in late summer, it shades out other vegetation due to it’s height (6 - 10ft), and so gradually impoverishes habitats by killing off other plants. As it is a controlled species it can’t be taken out of the wood so it is being left to die there after the flowers are taken off to stop it spreading by seed. At the moment it is not too big a problem in Badock's Wood but further up the Trym Valley it is becoming quite dominant. FOBW are working with the Avon Invasive Weeds Forum to see whether they can organise a work party to tackle it in Trymside. They are already running work parties in the Blaise area where the plant is flourishing.

Howling success for Foss Dog Show WOOFING and jumping took over Avon Riding Centre last weekend when the popular Family Fun Day and Dog Show returned for its fifth event. Despite forecasts, the weather was kind overall with only one shower. With many of the stalls and activities inside the arena they were well prepared in advance. Organiser Julia Deane said: “The show has grown in popularity and was even busier this year raising funds to support South Gloucestershire Strays. It was well supported by locals and people from further afield and we'd like to them them all for coming.” The children’s stall and games and drawing competition kept the kids happy and the extra craft and doggie stalls were very popular. Food ran out due to

demand and the dog activities gave people a chance to try something new with their dogs. Judges Tina Morgan (pedigree) and Maria Lowe (novelty) were kept very busy in the dog show ring, judging everything from pedigree pups to the happiest doggies. An afternoon of novelty classes followed, with prizes and rosettes awarded for best puppy, best veteran and the best child handler. There was even a visit from the BBC Radio Bristol Clueless team who posed with visitors and the BBQ for photos. The money raised from the show will go to South Gloucestershire Strays, who help support stray dogs and promote good dog ownership, education, and free micro chipping.

News Golden Hill gets set to celebrate its tenth Party in the Park THE team at Golden Hill Sports Ground are getting ready for their special 10th Party in the Park on Saturday, September 17. The fun begins at 1pm when visitors can experience a tethered hot air balloon ride, a team bath race - get your entry forms in now! - bubble football and a climbing wall. There will be a live music stage with great local acts, displays of drumming, Tae Kwon-do, Zumba, as well as a disco dome to show off your best moves. The event finishes with a magnificent firework display at 8pm. Organiser, Suze Scott said: “Party in the Park’s (PITP) purpose is to repay the ground purchase loan - and we are nearly there! The loan should be cleared in August 2017. “All future events funds will then help to start build funds for the next project - the renovation and development of the pavillion. “Everyone at Golden Hill Sports would like to say a big thank you to all those people that have come along and supported PITP over the years & making it such a success & we would like to invite them all back again this year along with anyone who has never been before to help us celebrate the 10th anniversary of this annual event.” PITP was created by the Golden Hill committee in 2007 as a way of both meeting the financial obligations of the Ground Purchase Loan

and giving something back to the community who helped the registered charity (Golden Hill Sports) to purchase the ground. The event, which was set up with the aim of jointly raising funds with the community, has helped raise well over £50,000 in the nine events held so far, with in the region of £12,000 being raised last year alone. It is an event that truly brings the community together and has attracted more than 3,000 people during the course of the day in the past. The team behind PITP are hoping to raise £12,000 profit from this year’s event. All funds go to the registered charity GHS whose charitable objectives are the protection and well being of the sports field and provision of sport for the membership, which is open to everyone. Party in the Park will take place at Golden Hill Sports Ground, 29 Wimbledon Road BS6 7YA, on Saturday 17 September, from 1pm - 8.15pm.

News Davis Cup Trophy at Coombe Dingle sport festival THE Davis Cup Trophy arrived in Bristol on Thursday 18 August as part of a national Trophy Tour of Great Britain launched by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in April this year. To celebrate Great Britain’s historic win against Belgium in the 2015 Davis Cup Final, Avon County Association hosted the Davis Cup – alongside a multisport festival – at Coombe Dingle Sports Complex. A fine day ensured a great turnout of families who were able to have photos taken with the iconic Davis Cup Trophy and enjoy a BBQ on the grounds outside the Cricket Pavilion while children went from sport to sport collecting activity stickers. The Festival of Sport showcased a number of sports, including tennis, wheelchair tennis, football, rugby, golf, cricket, handball, hockey and netball, throughout the whole day. The activities were delivered

by local clubs, coaching providers and national governing bodies including Coombe Dingle Tennis Club, Bristol City Community Trust, Bristol Rugby Club, Gloucestershire County Cricket,

part of this very special Davis Cup Trophy Tour. It was great to see families having fun posing together in front of the trophy and to see so many children playing tennis and other sports that they may not have had a chance to try before. It was a great success!” Following Team GB’s success in the Davis Cup last year, in which they hoisted the Trophy for the first time in 79 years, the LTA wanted to deliver the Davis Cup Trophy Tour across the country to thank the tennis community, including players, coaches, venues and volunteers, for its support throughout the tournament. It is keen to inspire a new generation to pick up a racket and get involved in tennis. Part of the Davis Cup Legacy project is the Tennis for Kids initiative which has seen over 1,000 coaches trained and more than 10,000 children aged 5-8 take part in free tennis lessons.

Snoring and sleep apnoea - how can we help ?

S with Dr Nicola White

General dental practitioner, with a special interest in Orthodontics.

NORING is caused by the vibration of soft tissues in the throat and behind the tongue. Studies indicate that at least 30% of adults snore. Snoring can be a major factor in sleep disturbance, leading to lack of energy, poor concentration, mood swings, and irritability. Snoring can also put considerable strain on personal relationships. In the long term, Snoring can also lead to high blood pressure and heart problems. With Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) an increase in weight or a reduction in muscle tone can trigger the change from a partially blocked airway (snoring) to a completely blocked airway. Approximately 3% of the adult population suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Excessive daytime sleepiness is the most common symptom experienced by patients. Your sleeping partner may notice that you may stop breathing whilst asleep and/or

gasp and choke. However, some patients may be completely unaware of the disorder, and remain undiagnosed for several years. OSA has been linked to an increased risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, metabolic syndrome and stroke. Long term daytime sleepiness can also have a profound effect on work and personal relationships. We have extensive training and experience in managing patients with Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). Prior to attending your appointment, you will be sent a questionnaire to complete and bring along to your consultation appointment. A comprehensive examination is undertaken to assess whether an anti-snoring device would benefit you. Treatment sometimes involves liaising with your GMP (family doctor) and specialist medical colleagues in ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) and Respiratory Medicine to ensure that patients receive the most appropriate care. It maybe necessary

to refer you to Respiratory Medicine for a “sleep study” to determine if you have Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. We can show you different types of anti-snoring devices such as Somnowell and Sleepwell which would benefit you and discuss which one would be more appropriate for your needs. The good news is that the overwhelming majority of people suffering from problematic snoring can be effectively treated using an anti-snoring device. They are also a very effective long-term treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea. The device is also known by lots of other names e.g snore guard, mandibular advancement device and mandibular advancement appliance. The anti-snoring device is designed to gently hold the lower jaw and tongue in the ‘recovery position’ while you sleep, keeping the airway open. For further information or to book a free consultation, please call Beau Monde Dental Care 01173303495.

Could you volunteer to check out care services for old and frail residents? BRISTOL’S Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) are keen to recruit volunteers to visit people receiving Home Care services and assess the quality of the service provided. Lay assessors are part of a team visiting people in their homes across the city that have home care services, to talk to them and find out if the quality of the service is satisfactory. People who need carers to come to their homes are mostly older, frail and can be in very poor health. For most, the carers are their lifeline. Many are isolated and vulnerable and may find it hard to complain or sort out any problems with their care arrangements. The Lay Assessor scheme works in partnership with the Council and forms part of their monitoring process. Bristol City Council said: “Lay assessors provide an invaluable independent view of the quality of home care services and

opportunities to meet and share the experience with other lay assessors. If you are interested in becoming a lay assessor and would like to find out more, email homecare@rsvp-west.org. uk or call 0117 922 4392 and leave your contact details and either Paula or Ken will call you back.

Qi Gong is a system of gentle physical exercise and mindfulness practice that originated in China thousands of years ago, but is now practiced throughout the world. It requires no particular religious or philosophical beliefs – just a lively interest in exploring and appreciating our own experience and relationship to the environment. Its integration of physical exercise with mental focus has benefits for bodily, mental and spiritual health well-

HAT is perfection anyway? Who defines it? You might also ask yourself why, if so, you feel compelled to achieve it. Could it be to be beyond reproach? avoid feeling the shame of not being good enough. . . avoid judgement. . . to prove to yourself and the world you are not the bad person you judged yourself to be in order to explain and make sense of a painful childhood experience. Children often blame themselves for events that occur. My point here is not to shift blame. The reality is that the people in our lives were doing the best they could. Our freedom lies in completing the grieving process. We cannot change the past. Bad things happen. It’s part of life. They teach us about our limitations and our strengths. What we can control and what we must accept in order to move on. They can teach us compassion and forgiveness, furthering our acceptance of our own humanity and that of others. Embrace and comfort that grieving child. Acknowledge their vulnerability and the strengths you’ve acquired since and the ones you’ve yet to develop. Why not join me in a weekly conversation about what’s possible? First meeting: September 5th at 7:30 pm at Westbury Trym and Tone Yours in fun and fitness,

News New event aims to bring Muslim women to the fore in our city MUSLIM women from across Bristol are being invited to help shape the agenda of a community event being held in October. Bristol Big Sisters is the first event of its kind in Bristol looking at positive role models that motivate and inspire. It will give exposure to Muslim women who have achieved success and recognition in the areas of media, science education and politics to act as role models for developing local initiatives and to inspire and motivate Muslim women. It is hoped that this will increase community cohesion by ensuring that Muslim women are aware of the opportunities, possibilities and support networks available to them in Bristol, thus combating marginalisation. The event is being coordinated by the Women’s Partnership Advisory Group, which is led by Muslim women from the community

and is supported by Bristol City Council’s Equality and Community Cohesion team. Keen to reach a diverse mix of women is Redland resident, Kalsoom Bashir, community co-chair of Building the Bridge, which has a partnership approach to increasing community cohesion and resilience, and reducing the risk of radicalisation. Kalsoom said: “It’s really important that Muslim women of all ages and backgrounds from right across the city have a space to meet and talk about the issues that are most important to them – and to do this on their own terms. “That’s exactly why we want people to get involved right from the very start, to help shape October’s event so that it’s both relevant and inclusive.” Councillor Asher Craig, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “We

want Bristol to be a city that champions equality; a city that can flourish with integrity because it is somewhere everyone can participate in success. Listening to communities and enabling grassroots leadership is a priority and events such as Bristol Big Sisters are a key part of this. “We want as many Muslim women of different ages and backgrounds to share their views and help shape this important event.” There will be a community bus service, a crèche, access for disabled women, interpreters and a prayer space. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. The 91 Ways Peace Café will also be at the event. The Bristol Big Sisters event takes place on Sunday 16 October, from 10am to 4pm at The Park Community Centre, Daventry Road, Knowle, Bristol BS4 1DQ.

To register to attend the October event email bristolbigsistersconference@ gmail.com or use the freepost address: Freepost RTKJ-SGBZULSH, Bristol Big Sisters (100TS/1), Bristol City Council, PO Box 3176, BS3 9FS

HE neighbourhood team were at the Fallodon Way Medical Centre Health and Wellbeing event last month. PCSOs Zaheer and Ellie had a stall where they gave crime prevention advice to more than 50 local residents from Henleaze and a couple of follow up home visits took plce as a result. Speaking of crime prevention advice, unfortunately the warmer weather can see an increase in the number of burglaries reported to us. More than a third of burglaries in the force area are opportunistic with a thief gaining access through an open window or unlocked door when the householder is out, in the garden or in another part of the home. Remember to always shut and lock your doors and windows when you are away from the house,

including in the garden. Don’t leave valuables on display near windows or doors – especially those with cat flaps - and don’t leave keys visible through the front door, as thieves could try to hook them out through the letterbox. It’s also worth registering all your valuables on www. Immobilise.com to make them easier to trace and return to you if they are stolen. If you would like any crime prevention advice or have any concerns about policing issues in your area please get in contact through our website www.avonandsomerset.police. uk or call 101 and ask to speak to your local neighbourhood team.

including Nisbett Catering, Lloyds Bank, UWE, LV, The Mall, Ernst and Young, Remploy and others. The Deaf and Disability Careers Fair will be held on 9th September 2016 at the Greenway Community Centre, Southmead, Bristol. The aim of the event is to build on Deaf Unity’s hugely successful Deaf Careers Fair in London in 2014 which was nominated for the 2014 Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development People Development Award. The Deaf and Disabilities Careers Fair 2016 is part of a series of specialist deaf regional careers fairs that Deaf Unity is hosting for deaf people across the UK. It’s part of major initiatives to address the chronic unemployment and underemployment of the deaf and disabled community in the UK and extensive efforts have been made to develop good

working relationships between employers within the Deaf and Hearing worlds. In addition to the standard range of stalls normally present at mainstream careers fairs, the Deaf and Disabilities Careers Fair also includes a series of workshops addressing employment challenges, and provides helpful tips such as interviewing skills. Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie said: “I am thrilled to support this remarkable event which not only puts people directly in touch with employers but also addresses some of the obstacles which have traditionally been a barrier to deaf and disabled people finding work. “I constantly meet people who are desperate to work and who would be real assets to any company but sadly it is not always easy to persuade the employer so I hope we can both help job seekers and also help to

make progress in the future.” Deaf Unity’s CEO Abdi Gas said: “The rationale behind this event is one of the many reasons for having established Deaf Unity. It is a true reflection of what the united and supported deaf community is able to achieve working in partnership with the mainstream environment and an example of the vast range of the underutilised skills and talents that exists within the deaf community. Such successes can only be achieved through partnership working with the wider community. ” The organisers are offering free transport to and from the event, see www. bristolcommunitytransport.org. uk Book your place via Eventbrite at: https://www. eventbrite.com/e/deaf-anddisabilities-careers-fair-2016tickets-25771458125

Fantastic Mr Fox

The Primrose Path by Rebecca Griffiths This is the debut novel for Rebecca Griffiths, a Wales based author, who has written a psychological thriller is set in rural Wales. After a rather unpleasant start to the book, this thriller builds slowly and surely leaving the reader to follow the strains and stresses of life for Sarah (or Rachel as she has renamed herself). The story begins with Rachel’s move from London to rural Wales to escape the publicity surrounding an abduction she suffered 17 years

previously. John Blundell, her abductor is just about to be released from jail and Rachel is worried about the media interest that is sure to come her way. Intrigue and tension are central to this novel and a sense of unease creeps in as you read about Rachel settling into life within a small closeknit Welsh community. The development of relationships with those surrounding her adds to the feeling of suspense, from the loathsome Idris to the comfortable Dai, the gentlemanly Graham and the friendly couple Hywel and Tracy who provide Rachel with her new canine companion, not everyone is as they first seem. This novel has twists and turns galore, I’m loathe to go into too much detail as I could so easily give the plot away, but the ending certainly surprised me. I challenge you not to be hooked!

PETER ’S VISION Peter Turner is the lead Optometrist at Turners Opticians A CAMPAIGN launched in Bristol and backed by Bristol optician Peter Turner is urging us all to ask ourselves this question – and find out the answer by getting our eyes tested. The UK is one of only five EU countries that does not legally require drivers to be tested by a medical or optical professional as part of their driving test. And it is estimated there are 3,000 casualties on UK roads every year where poor vision is a key factor. The #DrivingBlind campaign, supported by Peter and independent opticians across the country as well as road safety experts, aims to lobby the Gov-

57

Are you confident that your sight is good enough for you to be behind the wheel of a car? ernment for legislation on driver eye testing. But in the meantime it is calling on drivers to “ Think About Your Eyes” and find out their personal risks by making an online check. Campaigners say that a full eye test, carried out by a qualified optometrist should be mandatory as part of the driving test. It should then be every motorist’s responsibility to have regular eye tests at least every two years, or earlier if they notice any deterioration in their vision. In the UK, the minimum legal vision requirement has drivers reading a number plate from 20 metres, roughly five car lengths, with or without glasses as part of the main driving test. The test does not assess peripheral vision, which is a critical factor in

a driver’s ability to judge the full extent of their surroundings. Nigel Corbett, of the South Gloucestershire-based lens manufacturer Essilor, said: “It is incomprehensible that the driving test involves a rigorous assessment of a persons’ capability to operate and control a motor vehicle safely, yet the visual capability of the driver is assessed by a basic vision test carried out by a non-medically qualified driving test centre employee.” He added: “We’re all aware of the risks of speeding, drink-driving and not belting up. But do any of us think about our eyes before we get behind the wheel of a ton of metal?” Think About Your Eyes is calling on the Government to bring the UK into line with countries like Italy, Spain, Estonia, Latvia and

Serbia and Turkey, where drivers are tested every 10 years and at five, three or two-year intervals as they get older. Other safeguards could include following France, Spain and Switzerland where a spare pair of glasses must be kept in the vehicle by law. “It is ludicrous that, despite knowing sight worsens with age, a driver passing their test at 17 can drive with their vision unchallenged for the rest of their driving life,” Nigel explained. “Placing the emphasis on self-assessment for something as important as being in charge of a motor vehicle is ridiculously risky.” If it’s been more than two years since your last eye test book your appointment now at thinkaboutyoureyes.co.uk/locator or visit thinkaboutyoureyes. co.uk to take the #DrivingBlind Riskometer.

Primal Posture with

Clare Chapman

September, 2016

A posture ABC for every body! Spare a thought this September for the 250,000 or so UK primary school teachers returning to their classrooms. Tiny chairs, desks and extralow sinks are perfect for little people, but are a real challenge for the teachers and teacher’s assistants. As well as perching on tiny chairs and bending over low tables, there are also things to pick up from the floor, equipment to move, and hours of preparing lessons and admin on the computers. A study reported in the Times Educational Supplement in 2011 revealed that over two thirds of primary teachers had taken time off with job-related joint or back pain. It was estimated that over a career teachers would spend an average 20,000 hours sitting on furniture designed for children – what office worker would put up with that?!

Many professionals, including surgeons and dentists, suffer work-related pain which they may regard as par for the course, taking painkillers to keep going as long as possible. However, impaired mobility, joint surgery or spinal problems in middle age is a poor reward for such stoicism. Sometimes the demands of a job cannot be easily changed – but postural know-how can be transformational. As a postural health educator with over 24 years experience as a school teacher and bodyworker, I run INSET about how to sit, stand, bend, lift and lean in the ways that the body was designed to work best - an ABC of postural Wellness if you like. Damaging sitting and bending can be replaced with habits that are positively healthy for your structure.

This is an In-Service Training that every body will be thankful for! If you would like this INSET at your school contact: Clare Chapman 07982 231317 clare@gokhalemethod.com
