How one little Spirit of endurance bottle caused a huge amount of trouble AN enquiry about the safe disposal of a long forgotten chemical substance led to the arrival of the bomb squad, four fire-engines, the police, paramedics and the evacuation of Henleaze School and Park Grove residents. Scott Wilson, the man whose enquiry about the chemical prompted the emergency response, said: “It was an interesting day. There was a lot more to it than I expected - I just thought they’d send a bloke with a bucket of sand to take it away. “All of the different officers were charming and efficient. They treated it sensibly and very much as a real exercise.” Full story: Pages 2 & 3

THE ‘24in24’ endurance sporting event took place at the David Lloyd club in Westbury-on-Trym on the weekend of May 20-21. It was an incredibly tough but fun fitness challenge, with a great bunch of people completing 24 different events in 24 hours for local charity, the Capella Foundation. See page 9 for more

Unstable substance blown up in Henleaze A DAY like no other began with a DIY project for Park Grove resident Scott Wilson. He was moving an old chest of drawers, with the help of one of his neighbours, when a small chemist’s bottle containing brightly coloured yellow crystals rolled out. Scott said: “I had bought a set of chemists drawers over 35 years ago and this little bottle was sitting in there then. I had forgotten about it. “I rang the police up to say that I have a hazardous material who do I speak to? It didn’t come up on their page of hazardous chemicals but it did come up on the separate page for explosives. At their request I took a photo and emailed it to them. “I was then phoned up by a fire officer who mentioned that someone was coming to see me and all of a sudden a fire engine pulled up. By the time I’d got my jacket on, there were four! Then the police arrived and red and white tape was stretched across the road to stop people entering and I was ushered out of house.” It was 3.30pm on the afternoon of May 17 and pupils were about to leave Henleaze Primary School to go home. A 50m police cordon was set up outside the school. Pupils were ushered out of the school's side entrance after the main gate was

blocked off to join their parents and the teachers had to leave their cars on the premises. The substance was identified as Picric Acid. It’s explosive if taken out of the jar and very nasty if it gets into the skin or in the mucus membrane. It’s a brilliant lemon yellow colour and has large crystals. Scott said: “It has been banned from schools for over

20 years but you used to get it in kid’s chemistry sets. It’s quite distinctive because of it’s colour. It was in a glass bottle, in a crystalline state and that’s when it’s at it’s most unstable. Taking the top off would crush the crystals that had formed around the join and I didn’t want to lose a hand just to find out that I was right.” The bomb squad turned up

an hour later from Tidmouth and the officer took one look at the chemical and agreed that calling them had been the right thing to do. They organised with the school to dispose of it in the school playground and agreed to dig a hole in the football field and surround it with sandbags. And then they blew it up. “The bomb squad chap was enormously tall and introduced

n NEWS himself as ‘Tiny’. When he looked at the chemical he said that I’d done exactly the right thing which was very comforting,” added Scott. “I was the only civilian there and it made a very satisfying boom. The whole atmosphere was very jovial and then that was it.” Neighbour Kate Cardinal and her children were among those asked to leave their

houses. Her husband Paul had been helping to move Scott’s chest of drawers when the chemical fell out. Kate said: “We were evacuated at 3.30pm and spent the next two hours having tea in one of the coffee shops in Henleaze. We were allowed to come back at 5.30pm but had to remain in the house. “I could clearly hear the ‘1, 2, 3’ countdown before they

blew it up.” Scott added: “I did the right thing but in any other country it would have been one man with a bucket arriving to dispose of it. “I think I must have phoned somebody 30 odd years ago about it when I first bought the drawers but no one ever came back to me!”

n NEWS BRISTOL is renowned for its leafy streets, especially within the older parts of the city where trees planted in Westbury Park, Redland and Henleaze over 100 years ago have spread their canopy wide. Future maintenance plans for those trees was raised at the Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Westbury-on-Trym Forums - the Council’s plans were criticised as poorly thought out, making no economic sense and a threat to the reputation of the city as a green and pleasant place to live. To comply with Bristol City Council’s budget cuts, the street tree management budget for 2017-18 has been cut by 75 per cent, from £240,000 to £53,000 - a reduction of £187,000. Stephanie French, Tree Champion for the Neighbourhood Partnership said: “This is such a shortsighted policy - there is a commercial, financial and environmental argument for having trees. There will be an increase in subsidence and insurance claims and trees improve the environment,

n NEWS Cllr. Clive Stevens (Green Party, Clifton Down). Significant issues were raised about how the lack of pollarding will cause more trip hazards as pavements rise, making it difficult for parents to push buggies and the elderly to walk safely. Also, the root growth will undermine walls causing subsidence to properties. The very high risk of a branch falling onto a person and injury due to a trip hazard, resulting in insurance claims against the council of up to £100,000, was explained. It was pointed out that if two of these claims were made in a year, the council will have lost the money saved. Anthony said: “I drew the attention of Cabinet to a number in the savings column of the highways department that could have a devastating effect for Bristol.

A recently pollarded tree “This figure of £187k represents the difference between maintaining our street trees and leaving them to grow unrestrained and so damaging our footpaths and buildings, increasing insurance claims for injuries and damage. Without an alternative this city will pay dearly until it is forced to cut down our fine trees, as has happened in

Butchers of Southville

Cranbrook Road's street trees Sheffield, and leave us poorer in every respect.” A significantly reduced budget means that there will be no pollarding of street trees or removal of ‘epicormic’ growth the shoots that appear around the tree base. Emergency cover outside normal working hours is no longer being provided through the tree management contract and tree management will be limited to felling to address safety risks, despite greater initial costs and the long term consequent loss of tree sites. One felling costs the same as 16 years maintenance and many more trees will be removed as there will be no maintenance. .There will also be no planting of street trees, either replacement or new, even when cost neutral. In the past Bristol City Council has operated a number of innovative schemes allowing residents or community groups to sponsor replacement or new street trees. Despite fully funding the planting, and maintenance for two years, such planting will no longer be permitted. Currently there is huge support from the community for replacing lost trees. Cllr Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Find Communities - the department responsible for trees - said: “Our team are working with highways around risk factors. I am happy to

look at this again.” Mayor Marvin Rees added: “I welcome someone turning up with a solution. In the whole budgeting process we said that this would increase risk. Scrutiny is how this organisation is run. We will pick up the points and take the challenge on.” Following the meeting Cllr Anthony Negus added: “The Mayor said this will be reconsidered and put out for consultation in the summer. We need to ensure that proposals are re-thought, safe and workable.”

n VETS' ADVICE

What do we vaccinate our cats against, and why?

Cats are vulnerable to a wide range of different infectious diseases. Some of these are serious, often causing life-long complications, and they may even be fatal. We recommend vaccinations to provide protection against infectious diseases. When we give a vaccine, we administer a weakened form of the infection. This stimulates the immune system and memory cells are produced which allow the cat to quickly and effectively react to future infections. There are a number of vaccines available in the UK for cats, we recommend the following vaccines: Feline Pankeulopenia Virus - Attacks the gut lining and the cat’s immune system. The virus causes bloody vomiting and diarrhoea, collapse, dehydration and can be fatal. It is a common virus, and outbreaks are fairly frequent, partly because the virus can survive for prolonged periods in the environment. Vaccination is highly effective and offers good protection. Once the primary course is completed protection has

been proven to last for 3 years. Feline Herpes and Calicivirus “Cat Flu” - These are given together, as they are the two most common causes of Cat Flu, a respiratory infection in cats. The diseases are rarely fatal but herpes virus remains in the system for life and can cause chronic infections and reactivate at times of stress. The vaccines are fairly good at preventing infection but cannot completely prevent it; vaccination reduces the severity of an infection, and the risk infecting other cats. Immunity needs to be boosted annually. Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) can cause complications with the cat’s immune system and can also be associated with the development of cancers of the white blood cells (usually leukaemia or lymphoma). Feline Leukaemia Virus can be spread in saliva by grooming, sharing food bowls, or fighting, so vaccination is really important for cats who live in high-cat population areas. Immunity needs to be boosted yearly.

Let's all be truly dementia friendly DEMENTIA Awareness Week was held in May, timed perfectly with a conference held in Henleaze at St Peter’s Church, where visiting speakers, including the Alzheimer’s Society and BRACE talked about living with the illness and the latest scientific research. The event was organised by the Bristol Dementia Action Alliance and the Townswomen’s Guild. Creating Dementia Friendly communities was very much on the agenda and activities such as Singing for

the Brain, walking groups and local allotment societies were all highlighted as ways to keep people with the illness active and included in the community. Tony Hall, Chair of the Bristol Dementia Action Alliance (BDAA) said: “This roadshow happens to be in Henleaze but we’ve run one in East Bristol, South Bristol and Callington Road so over time we’ll get round the city because our objective is to make the city Dementia friendly - not just bits of it.” “We are pushing on open

Staying in the swim BRISTOL City Council are encouraging people living with the disease to try a dementia-friendly swimming session. The Council is working with many different partners to make sure that life doesn’t stop when dementia begins. All Bristol Leisure Centres including Horfield and Filton are now taking part, with staff specially trained by St Monica Trust on hand to support people with dementia and their carers, who swim for free. The centres also all have larger changing rooms, improved signage and carefully monitored temperature control to provide a safe and supportive environment for the swimming sessions. Becky Pollard, Bristol’s Director of Public Health, said: “A diagnosis of dementia doesn’t mean that you have to stop doing the things you enjoy or trying new things, so we’ve been working to make sure people can still access the same opportunities in Bristol. “ As well as the swimming projects, the council is supporting Active Together www.voscur.org/volunteering/activetogether which matches volunteers to help people living with dementia based on shared interests. Pairs regularly go out together to take part in activities they both enjoy – from dancing and Pilates to visiting art galleries. The first swimming session is free. n NEWS doors. Wherever we go people will say, “My aunt’s got Dementia,’ or “My mum’s has Alzheimers’. We have had a very small number of people who don’t want to get involved - they still feel stigmatised and embarrassed by it. “The Townswomen’s Guild ladies have been around 150 shops in Henleaze with a guide and out of that number they’ve only had one that didn’t want to know.” Shirley Phillips, Chair of Henleaze (Evening) Townswomen’s Guild is one of the ladies who has been visiting local businesses explaining how to make the layout and environment more suitable for people with Dementia. Shirley said: “I think it is important in Henleaze where we have quite a number of elderly people. Dementia awareness is vital for their wellbeing and happiness. “Going around the shops with the Guide written by the BDAA was very useful as most of the shops were very receptive. It gives some guidance to shopkeepers on how to deal

7

with people who come in with Dementia, who perhaps are confused, or can’t deal with their money. “I’m very pleased with the turnout so far and think it’s a good cause that the ladies in the Guild have really taken on. We feel that it’s really worthwhile in our community.” Parliamentary candidate Charlotte Leslie stopped by and was very impressed with the numbers attending. She said: “The practical information that is being given out here is superb. It’s amazing and very uplifting to see communities rally around to help those who are suffering and the families of those who are suffering.” Tony Hall added: “It’s a bit like dropping a stone in the water - the ripples appear and go outward - but we still have a long way to go.” If you think you or a family member may have Dementia talk to your GP who will refer you to the Dementia Wellbeing Service. They will allocated a navigator to take you through the system and provide support for you.

Athletes’ 24 hour challenge for Capella Foundation THE ‘24in24’ endurance sporting event took place at the David Lloyd club in Westbury-onTrym on May 20-21 and what an atmosphere it was with a great bunch of people, all pushing themselves in order to raise as much money as possible for the Capella Foundation. Consisting of 24 hours of exercise; 24 different events, each hour for 24 hours... a incredibly tough yet fun fitness challenge that pushed people to their limits. The purpose of the day was to raise money for local charity the Capella Foundation, part of the 'Mother and Baby Trust' based at St Michael's Hospital, Bristol. This charity was set up in February 2013 to increase awareness of medical complications during pregnancy, especially when mothers are carrying twins, and offer support to those affected. All fundraising going directly to fund pioneering medical research. Sam Chivers took part in the gruelling day. His corporate sponsor was Henleaze and

Westbury Voice Publisher, Emma Cooper. Sam said: “I wanted to take part in the 24in24 as the cause is important for me. Whilst I was being born my mum suffered from medical complications and it could have gone either way if I lived or died. I am quite an active person and could not pass up the opportunity to raise money in such an active way for such a good cause. “I really enjoyed the event,

especially the strong man car pull, the dragon boat race and the military yomp. The Bhangra session was fun, but it was hour 23 and I had no energy or coordination left. “The rest of the Wolfpack (the others doing all 24 hours) were all extremely supportive and the main thing that got everyone through the event was the sheer amount of enthusiasm that everyone showed. “Thanks to all the people who

supported me and Voice Press Limited for being my corporate sponsor. I raised £500!” Lucy Britton and her husband Mat founded the charity after Lucy experienced pregnancy complications. Lucy said: “This year was the final 24in24 (for a couple of years anyway! “We were wary about increasing the numbers taking part in the event but we were thrilled that the whole weekend was filled with love, 110% effort from all team members and most importantly there was an incredible effort on fundraising. “In total we raised £51,200 over the weekend and this figure is still set to rise. We cannot thank everyone that took part, supported and donated their hard earned cash enough. This money really will make a difference to so many families facing complicated pregnancies in the future.” For more information see www.thecapellafoundation.com or Facebook page www.facebook. com/thecapellafoundation

n NEWS A FOOTBALL team from Westbury Park who train with a former Manchester United player have won all their games in a ‘perfect season’ to become Bristol Girls League under 14 Champions 2016-17. The Westbury Park Foxes Girls U14 team won in a thrilling climax to the season, away to second placed Wotton Rovers at Katharine Lady Berkeley School. The Foxes kept their heads to come from behind and prevailed 2-1 over last year's worthy champions. That made it 18 wins out of 18, and a first league title in three years. Ewan Paton celebrated the win on the team’s blog: “It has been a long and arduous road to get there. The seventeen prior wins might have suggested that this was an easy league, and that this team were a football equivalent of cricket's 'flat track bullies'. Nothing could be further from the truth. “With the exception of a few games where opposition legs tired and heads dropped over 70 minutes, those wins had to be played and fought for all the way. 3-2 away at Boco after trailing.

Ewan Paton added: “So many great individual performances, so many heroines, but overall this was a team and squad triumph. Every single Fox who

"Despite the tactical and motivational brilliance of coaching team Martin, Graham and Mark, our girls never did quite shake off their "relaxed" pre-match air of a bunch of mates larking around in the park.”

Like our Library, it has been one of our most loved and valued assets ever since. If the Westbury community wants it to continue that way, it must now wake-up from complacency and establish its love with more positive commitments for its future,” said Hilary Long, Chairman of the Westbury Society. For the next two years, ownership will remain with Bristol city Council, but it has already publicised intentions to hand over management of its Parks to other institutions after 2020. It has been explained to the Westbury Society that there is no money for anything beyond absolute basic maintenance in the meantime. Hilary said: “We need to make sure from now on that future ownership is not handed to another body like the University,

over our heads. The Lawn Tennis Association is already involved with an offer to re-surface the tennis courts in return for its own regular training sessions there and public use will be chargeable by use of PIN access, purchased in advance. We shall be asking for a legal guarantee that suitable hours will still be available for local people at weekends and in evenings. “Part of the Westbury Society’s founding purpose is to speak up for the quality and preservation of local amenities – You can help us to do this by joining us (for £10/£8 a year) and especially by giving your support to our recently formed sub-group: ‘The Friends of Canford Park’ in practical ways, such as signing up as a volunteer gardener or sponsor new flowering shrubs and trees. Future improvements will have to come from local fundraising - other Parks’ Groups have been doing this for some time. “I believe that it is essential

that we establish an active presence there now so that when the crunch comes we will be first in line for consultations with BCC, to discuss a business plan and be given options on future management or ownership, through a Trust or Charitable foundation. “Let’s remember that in 1970 people followed the lead given by a newly formed Westbury Society and saved our beautiful Village Hall from sale and destruction in favour of blocks of flats! A voluntary management committee has run it as a charity ever since – without going bankrupt too - and it continues to flourish as one of our most famous institutions and assets (since 1869). The same can hold good for our Park.” The Westbury on Trym Society Membership Secretary can be contacted via website or call: 962 2795. Mike Blundell, Chair of the Friends of Canford Park said: “The Friends Group is

focusing its efforts on a current proposal by Bristol City Council, in association with the Lawn Tennis Association, to transfer control over the running of the tennis courts in Canford Park to an operator. The proposal also involves resurfacing the courts, introducing court fees and security gates. These are just some of the facts and we have asked for more so we can properly assess it. “We also want all Park users and local residents to be involved and changes to be considered in the context of the Park as a whole. It cannot be right that the proposals are being dealt with exclusively between Lawn Tennis Association officials and Bristol City Council officers and focus on the tennis courts in isolation to the rest of the Park.” The new ‘Friends of Canford Park Group’ can be contact via the website www. friendsofcanfordpark.co.uk or call: 07900 612315.

Medical conference at Redmaids' High School puts girls at the forefront SURGEONS, neuroscientists, psychiatrists, paramedics and GPs were among a range of experienced doctors and medical practitioners speaking at a free schools careers conference especially for girls on 19 May. The Women and Careers Conference, now in its 6th year, is organised and hosted every year by Redmaids’ High School. Working with state and independent schools across the region, 15 and 16-year old students from Bristol, Bath, Bruton, Cheltenham and Exeter come together to hear from leading specialists about the careers available in medicine and how to achieve places on scientific and medical degrees. North Bristol NHS Trust consultants Dr Karine Zander and Dr Ed Morris passed on their knowledge and experience in two keynote addresses. More than 20 other speakers led workshops exploring how the brain works, paramedicine, being a junior doctor, the 100,000

by Swansea University, who are leading a workshop entitled ‘Your amazing blood!’ including a simulated blood grouping exercise demonstrating how lifesaving transfusions are matched every day in hospitals. Isabel Tobias, Headmistress at Redmaids’ High School, said: “We focus this conference towards the needs of girls as the gender imbalance against women, particularly in some very senior medical roles, remains a reality. As a girls-only school, we clearly see it as our mission to help address this. “Being able to extend the opportunities presented through this conference to students from other schools is very important and we are grateful to all our speakers for giving us their time and to Swansea University for sponsoring the event.”

FHS chosen to attend official opening of sports centre STUDENTS from Fairfield High School (FHS) Years 7 and 8 were delighted to be invited to help officially open Lockleaze Sports Centre. Bristol & District Rugby Football Combination has joined forces with Bristol City Council to develop a new modern two-storey clubhouse and two all-weather pitches for rugby and football, replacing 1950s changing rooms and underutilised, out of date playing fields. Lauren Gibbons, Girls PE Teacher at FHS, said: “It was an absolute honour to be a part of such a grand opening and it will be an experience that the girls and I will remember for many years to come. Rugby is a fantastic sport which is backed so enthusiastically by the RFU and seeing so many girls having fun and showing such great sportsmanship during the opening was amazing to see. The facilities are incredible and we hope to have the pleasure to

be playing on them in the near future.” The girls who took part were equally enthusiastic. One said: “I never realised I would enjoy full contact rugby so much, I will definitely be joining a club." The funds for this £5.2m project have come from the sale for housing development of part of the Combinations land. The University of the West of

England have recently joined the project bringing further capital and they will use the facility for student sport mid-week. The girls from FHS were given a private coaching session of full contact rugby which, for many, was their first experience of the game. This was then transferred to a full sided game which everyone enjoyed. Marvin Rees, the Mayor

of Bristol, said: “Redesigning community spaces to get more value out of them will be crucial for Bristol in future so I’m pleased to see this approach is already in action in Lockleaze. “This is a great success story for the local community, especially in our year as the European City of Sport.” Lauren Gibbons added: “The girls had a fantastic day.”

Could you see yourself as a student? “I left school at 16. It never would have occurred to me to go to university. I loved the course. It opens your mind to what you can get out of a book.” Come along for an informal chat on Tuesday 13 June 2017 6pm to 8pm School of Humanities University of Bristol 3/5 Woodland Road, Bristol BS8 1TB

n EDUCATION A PROJECT highlighting homelessness achieved unprecedented success at the Young Enterprise area finals in Bristol. Team Connected, from CGS, scooped five of the nine awards - including overall winner - and is through to the regional finals in June. The sixth-form girls built a business selling keyrings and coasters in the shape of jigsaw pieces to symbolise the links that hold society together. They also made a film called The Missing Piece, in which they spoke to homeless people and highlighted some of the factors that caused this plight. The team was up against nine other schools at the area finals at Kingsweston House and came away with prizes for best trade stand, best company report, and best Bristol team. Olivia Wright was named best managing director and the girls took the overall best Company Programme title. Michael Roulston, head of careers and employability at CGS, said the girls had

Joy at junior school over new playground REDMAIDS’ High School pupils are climbing new heights thanks to a new playground officially opened yesterday at their junior school. Guest of honour Jim Hayward of Mendip Outdoor Pursuits also cut the ribbon on a new set of classrooms at the all-girls independent school in Grange Court Road, Westbury-onTrym. Lisa Brown, headteacher, said: “We have worked with Mendip Outdoor Pursuits for more than 30 years, together developing a love of adventure and outdoor learning in a whole generation of girls.” Mr Hayward, who founded the company in 1978, said: “The great outdoors is the ultimate classroom, stretching us physically and mentally and delivering learning that is directly relevant to what is taught through traditional curricular subjects.” The playground includes natural and artificial grassed areas for games, wooden climbing frames, a pirate ship, pagoda, tepees and a mini climbing wall, all surrounded by protective surfaces. The new ground floor classroom opening on to the garden will accommodate a combined Year 1 and 2 group from September, while upstairs a similar sized classroom will house one Year 5 group.

n GENERAL ELECTION

2017 Election - Your vote counts BRISTOL North West goes to the polls on Thursday June 8 to elect the MP for this constituency. Four candidates are standing - Charlotte Leslie (Conservative Party) Darren Jones (Labour Party), Celia Downie (Liberal Democrat), and Sharmila Bousa (Green Party). The Henleaze and Westbury Voice is featuring a summary for each candidate, explaining who they are and what they will do for Bristol West if elected. Out on the campaign trail Conservative Party candidate Charlotte Leslie said: “You’re going to hear lots of nice words over this election. Before I was elected as an MP in 2010, I never believed what politicians said until I saw it happen. So when I became an MP, I made my mission simply to ‘get stuff done!" Labour Party candidate Darren Jones said: “I will be an MP that stands up for people in Bristol North West in Parliament. Being an MP embedded in the local community and in local issues is of important, but you also vote for someone to represent you in Parliament too. That's the job of being an MP. So please keep that in mind when you vote on Thursday 8th June, and think about who you want voting on your behalf over the next half a decade, on the issues of Brexit, schools funding, the future of social care and more." Celia Downie is standing for Liberal Democrats and is in favour of remaining in the European Union. She said: “No one voted for a hard Brexit deal and now only the Lib Dems are calling for a reasonable, sensible exit from EU where as much as possible can be retained in a new relationship. “People are telling me on their doorsteps that they are concerned for the future of their jobs and families." Sharmila Bousa visited Fairfield School as part of her campaign where the Green Party launched their Clean Air Charter with party co-leader, Caroline Lucas. Bristol North West had the highest turnout of voters in Bristol during the 2015 election, when 71.7 per cent of the electorate cast their vote. Both main parties polled a substantial amount of the votes then with 22,767 for the Conservative Party and 17,823 for the Labour Party. UKIP polled in third place with 4,889 votes but are not standing in this area this time. The Liberal Democrats polled 3,214 and the Green Party 2,952 votes.

Darren Jones, Labour Party candidate

Charlotte Leslie, Conservative Party candidate

Darren Jones is back to take on the Conservative's Charlotte Leslie in Bristol North West. Darren, who came second in the 2015 General Election, is fighting an "unashamedly pro-European" campaign. A Remain campaigner and a consumer rights lawyer who specialises in EU law, Darren is part of a national group of lawyers advising politicians on how to manage Brexit in the best interests of Britain. Darren wants to get the best deal from Brexit, with a vote in Parliament on the final deal before we proceed. Darren was born in Southmead Hospital and grew up in Lawrence Weston and Shirehampton in the 1980s. He went off to university before returning to Bristol to go to law school and to qualify as a solicitor. He's been involved in the local community for years: as a school governor, charity trustee and community organiser right across Bristol North West. Darren is committed to fighting against cuts to school funding, against the "dementia tax" for older people needing social care and for improving local transport in Bristol, so that North West Bristol is better connected to the rest of the city. Darren is also an environmentalist, campaigning against fracking and for renewable energy investment.

Charlotte Leslie was elected MP for Bristol North West in 2010 and re-elected in 2015. The former national standard swimmer lives in Shirehampton and lists learning Arabic, surfing and Bob Dylan among her interests. She is passionate about boxing, both as a participant and as an advocate for the physical, social and mental health benefits it can bring, especially for young people with a troubled upbringing. She said: “Over the last decade, as a community we have got so much good stuff done together: re-opening the Lamplighters pub (which people said would never happen), getting the Bristol Free School open (they said it wouldn’t happen), protecting Bristol’s geological heritage in Pen Park Hole and masses more. “If I am re-elected, I will continue to work with our communities to get good stuff done locally and nationally. We have successfully got the Government to rethink the Bristol schools funding plans - Bristol schools will NOT be losing money. "I’m working with Government and charities to help prevent troubled kids falling into crime, gangs or extremism. And I want to be on the first train round a re-opened ‘Henbury Loop’ local railway line! “Look at how much we’ve got done together so far. Think how much more we can do.”

Celia Downie, Liberal Democrat candidate

Sharmila Bousa, Green Party candidate

I am a Bristolian born and bred, educated at St Mary Redcliffe Comprehensive School before going to university. I worked as a teacher before being elected as an Avon County Councillor, where I was lead on Planning and Transport. As Group Leader on Avon Fire Authority, I served at the Home Office. I became Chair of the West of England in Europe Partnership and established an office in Brussels. So I have experience of politics at local, national and European levels. I voted Remain as did 58 per cent of Bristol North West voters; this constituency needs a MP who speaks up at Westminster. Voters are dismayed by the uncertainty of Brexit, and the deal the government is negotiating. This uncertainty relates to employment, family life, and our country's future. My party alone is committed to giving voters the final say. I am a supporter of Bristol University and UWE and I will encourage them to continue to working with institutions across Europe. Funding state schools and NHS provision at much improved levels is guaranteed through my Party manifesto. Voters are concerned about transport, both buses and trains, and disappointed with the decision to delay electrification here.

Having lived in Bristol for seven years, and Bristol North West for three, I have fallen in love with this vibrant city. I'm no career politician, instead I have a wealth of real work and family experience that will help me listen, care about and represent you as constituents. I want to help Bristol lead the way on climate change by attracting investment and creating jobs in the green energy industry, by building affordable and sustainable housing, and by taking rigorous steps to reduce air pollution and improve public transport throughout the city. If elected I will also campaign for electoral reform and for a second referendum on Europe, fight to protect the NHS from privatisation, speak out to halt cuts to education, reinstate maintenance grants for Higher Education and stop fees, help reverse cuts to benefits, mental health and family services and push for a clamp down on tax avoidance by large corporations. I am 39 years old, married with two daughters aged 3 and 5 years. I worked for 15 years in Communications and Development within the Arts and Charities Sector and after starting a family I retrained as a bodyworker and birth practitioner.

Fastest young runners in the Harriers TWO young athletes showed their senior club-mates clean pairs of heels to scoop awards. Dalis Jones and Abdi Hasan left the more experienced runners trailing behind them as they took the top gongs in the Westbury Harriers Athletics Club annual awards. They were both celebrating after being named the Bristolbased club’s two athletes of the year thanks to their impressive efforts – including last month’s London Mini-Marathon. Dalis, 13, won an array of under-13 girls winners’ medals, led from the front, finishing first in the Gwent League after winning every fixture and also repeating the achievement in the Gloucester League. The Tockington Manor School pupil, also finished runner-up the Midlands and nationals cross-country championships, and finished sixth, representing the South West of England, in yesterday’s London MiniMarathon. Abdi, who attends Cotham

Individual Winners Abdi Hasan and Dalis Jones School, was second place in the South West Championships, third fastest at the Midlands Road Relays, and 12th in the English Schools – despite being a year younger than his rivals. And, he finished his winter campaign on a high by winning bronze medal in the London Mini-Marathon Abdi, 15, also led the Under-15 boys team to success in the Gwent League along with

fellow Westbury Harriers Greg Hayward, James Harrod, Fred Stewart, Johan Hobbs and Bryn Davies – which saw them scoop the club’s team of the year award. Hannah Hobbs, who won the girls under-17 runner of the year award, has also had a season to remember, culminating in her fourth-placed finish in the London Mini-Marathon, which doubles as the British Three Mile

Championships. She also won every Gwent she’s entered this year, was second in the Midland XC Championships and seventh in the National XC Championships. The awards were handed out at the club’s presentation night, which took place at the Coombe Dingle sports complex, by club stalwart George Blackburn who joined Westbury Harriers in 1960. George, who represented Ireland at the 1967 world crosscountry championships, coached a number of Westbury runners that went on to represent their country including Simon Mugglestone, Chris Buckley, Robin Nash and Maurice Cowman. “It’s great to see that there are clearly a lot of talented and committed young runners at Westbury Harriers,” George said. “The club is in really good health and I’m not going to name names but some of the runners have what it takes to reach the very top.”

Free places for cycle challenge as part of Bristol's City of Sport year ONE hundred free places are being made available for next month’s Break the Cycle charity cycle ride as part of Bristol’s City of Sport campaign ‘Are You Game?’ The campaign launched on May 6 and aims to give local people of all ages a chance to try a range of free taster sessions. Guy Fishbourne, Bristol City Council’s Sport & Physical Activity Development Manager, said: “I’m really happy with the

reaction we’ve had from local clubs and organisations so far to this campaign and would like to congratulate everyone who has already got involved. “A key part of our aim as European City of Sport is to make activity and sport more accessible to the people of Bristol. We hope through campaigns like this that we will be able to encourage more people than ever before to take up a sport or activity as part of their daily routine. “We have a great range of free sports and activity taster sessions listed online and I encourage everyone to take look and see

if there is something for them. Regular exercise can have such a positive effect on both our physical and mental health and this could be the perfect excuse to find the right kind of activity for you.” Ben Breeze, Bristol Sport Foundation’s Chief Community Officer, said: “Bristol Sport Foundation are delighted to support Bristol as a European City Of Sport by allocating 100 promotional places on our Bronze 35 mile route to the ‘Are You Game?’ campaign and very much look forward to joining you in the saddle on Sunday 18th June”

Westbury Park gets set for 2017 fun THE annual Westbury Park Festival starts on Friday, 23rd June and will run for just over two weeks. The Festival aims to reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the local community and to bring people together to celebrate living in Westbury Park - and to have some fun! The Festival is supporting two charities – Cancer Research UK and The Bridge Foundation, a Bristol based charity which provides counselling to young people. There are fourteen Festival events including a Quiz Night on Friday, 23 June, A Kids Disco on

Saturday, 24 June, an Antiques Evening with local expert Ian Chaney on Wednesday 28 June, an Arts Fair on Saturday, 1 July, Open Gardens on Sunday, 2 July, a Festival Buffet on Tuesday, 4 July and a Garden Party on Saturday, 8 July. Many of the events will take place in either St. Alban’s Church Hall on Bayswater Avenue or at the

Methodist Church on North View. Tickets for these events are available from Flowers by Barry Toogood at 101 Coldharbour Road, Westbury Park Pub in Northumbria Drive and C The World at 33 North View. A detailed Festival Programme leaflet will be distributed to all households in

Westbury Park's Open Gardens day EXPECT to hear the sound of mowers and frantic pruning as the gardeners of Westbury Park have a last minute tidy-up ready for visitors on Sunday July 2nd. Open Gardens is well worth a visit: there is a variety of diversity in planting and design around the neighbourhood, and some gardens simply look beautiful at the height of summer when they are flush with bloom. The event is organised by local resident Paul Thomas. “I have got around 16 gardens, at least four of which have never been open or not in the last four years,” he said. It’s a family-friendly way to explore the local streets, take a look around the neighbours gardens, explore an insect house in one of the new gardens on Linden Road, and enjoy some tea and cake along the route. Some garden owners sell plants at their house too - all of which raises funds for the Westbury Park Festival charities (see article above). n NEWS A GROUP of runners have put their best foot forward to run the Bristol 10k and raised thousands of pounds for families in need. Volunteers and supporters of Baby Bank Network, most of whom are mums themselves and some of whom have never run in a race before, took part in the annual fundraiser on May 7. The runners were keen to raise enough money to help provide more than 100 babies with pre-loved items such as cots, prams, clothes and toys their families could otherwise not afford. The charity, established in 2015 by North Bristol mums Eva Fernandes and Becky Gilbert, helps about one family a day thanks to donations from local parents and a dedicated team of volunteers. Overheads are relatively low but there are costs which need covering, such as purchasing new items (mattresses and bottle teats) and warehouse rent and bills. “We rely on fundraising efforts such as this to help us provide this service to families in HWV Landscape half page need and feel very fortunate to

have such dedicated supporters,” said trustee Laura Williams. More than 12,000 runners took part in the Simplyhealth Great Bristol 10K this year. Baby Bank Network had a team of more than a dozen runners and has already raised over £2,500. “We were inspired by This Mum Runs got a good 20:47 copy.pdf 1 and 16/05/2017 group together;” said Baby Bank

Network volunteer co-ordinator and runner Georgina Cairns. “We helped each other along with training tips and motivation. We know how important it is to raise money to help Baby Bank Network provide support to families across Bristol and feel this is a great way to help with that, it has the side effect of getting us fit as well!”

To donate to the team, visit: www.babybanknetwork.com Baby Bank Network is launching a crowdfunding campaign in June, as part of the 'Better Bristol' fund-matching initiative, which will double the total raised. This will enable them to take on their first permanent parttime member of staff and boost the number of families they can help. In return for donations, supporters will be able to pick from several rewards - including original bee-themed artwork, a unique guide to Bristol created in association with The Bristol Parent and full of discount vouchers for children's activities and products and entry to the big Baby Bank Network Family Fun Day, taking place in Horfield Parish Church Hall from 10am2pm on Saturday July 1.

20-year celebration for The Moggery THE Moggery is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. All current and past volunteers and long term supporters are warmly welcomed to a celebration Sunday Tea at the hall of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lanercost Road, Southmead BS10 6DY from 3pm on June 11th. Founder Christine Bayka said: “We are also inviting all adopters from 1997 to attend our second celebration at the same venue and time on Sunday June 25th. As approximately 200 cats and kittens are adopted each year we are preparing to welcome a large number of people! Adopters are asked to bring a photo of their cat for us to create a montage to film and all attendees are asked to wear their Moggery T shirts or a red top for an outside photo. “We are looking forward to two very enjoyable reunions at which many stories will be swapped and our young and 'young at heart' older volunteers can socialise while enjoying the displays and eating home made cakes.”

Demand rising for North Bristol Foodbank service NEW figures show that over 3,700 three day emergency food supplies were provided to local people in crisis by North Bristol Foodbank during 2016-17, compared to 3,663 in 2015-16. Of this number, 1,562 went to children. Jon Dobson, Foodbank Manager of North Bristol Foodbank said: “Anybody could find themselves in need of the Foodbank. Every week people are referred to us after being hit by something unavoidable – such as illness, a delay in a benefit payment or an unexpected bill – means food is simply unaffordable. “It really is only with the community’s support that we’re able to provide vital emergency help when it matters most, and we hope that one day there will be no need for us in North Bristol. Thank you so much to everyone in North Bristol who already donates their time, food and money to help local people. If you’re not already involved, we’d love to hear from you!” The top three reasons for Foodbank referral in North Bristol were: benefit delay 24.6 %; benefit change 23.4%; and low income 20.3%. Despite generous donations of food, there are many hidden costs to run the Foodbank. Costs include warehouse space, to sort and stock donated food, a van to pick up donated food and deliver to distribution centres, and other overheads like utilities and insurances. The foodbank welcomes any new offers of help with funding – local businesses, organisations and individuals interested in supporting the foodbank’s work can find out more at https://northbristol.foodbank.org.uk/give-help/donate-money

n NEWS THIS year's May Fair fell on May Day, the 1st of May, and it felt like we were in a charmed circle of sunshine as stallholders looked at images on their phones of rainclouds surrounding Bristol. The Ambling Band got things started at 1pm as they ambled onto Redland Green (minus pink rain gear this year) and the May Fair was soon busy with fair-goers coming to explore the stalls, meet friends and enjoy everything the May Fair has to offer. As befits May Day, in the main arena there was Morris dancing from Rag Morris dancers complete with hankies, bells and a hobby horse, and maypole dancing by pupils from the Steiner School. There were fun-fuelled games for kids with the irrepressible team from Sharky & George, and Mr Brown's Pig's puppet show, Fez the Jester and storytelling with Cassandra all attracted happy audiences. The church halls, bowling club and tennis club were kept busy providing refreshments and a chance for fair-goers to

recharge before heading back to the stalls – and shelter when the skies darkened and the rain came around 4 o'clock. Thunder and rain didn't deter Sharky & George who had kids catapulting water bombs in the rain or Bristol Samba who drew an

appreciative audience to watch their dancing and drumming – and by the time they had finished their performance the sun was out again. Overall it was a lovely day (particularly given last year’s drenching) and the bucket

collection came to £1,543.27 which plus Gift Aid will be given to this year's nominated charity, Caring in Bristol – a small, local charity which helps homeless and vulnerable people in Bristol. The Redland May Fair is a free, not-for-profit community event and is organised by the Redland & Cotham Amenities Society for everyone to enjoy. We’re grateful to all the volunteers who make the fair possible and we can never have too many so if you'd like to find out more about getting involved either on the organising committee or on the day itself please email RedlandMayFairVolunteers@ gmail.com. Or if you think you might like to have a stall at next year's fair, please email mayfairstalls@rcas.org.uk and we will be in touch nearer the time. Abigail Shepherd On behalf of May Fair Committee

Neighbourhood Consultation about Partnership final meeting

council cuts Due to the financial pressures facing Bristol City Council, Neighbourhood Partnerships (NPs) are no longer being supported by the Council the final meeting of the Stoke Bishop, Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze Neighbourhood Partnership (NP) has now taken place. The Council wants to continue to work with communities – but in a way which requires less Council resources. Helen Furber from the Henleaze Society said: “The General Election has led to the start date of a consultation about Council

budget cuts being delayed until the second week of June. Due to the far reaching nature of the cuts that will be implemented, it is essential that as many individuals as possible respond to the consultation. Locally, the former NP representatives are continuing to work with the Councillors and their communities. When details of the consultation are available, it is planned to hold meetings to work with local residents so that we can try to influence the way in which the cuts affect us.”

THE final meeting of the Stoke Bishop, Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze Neighbourhood Partnership (NP) meeting took place on 22 May. At that meeting the committee agreed two funding requests from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL budget). A payment of £3,700 was agreed for a dog bin at the main gate to Stoke Lodge and £3,300 to replace the rose garden entrance gates at Canford Park. The tree planting schedule for 2017/18 which had already been allocated funds by the NP committee at £295 per tree may, under BCC budget proposals be charged at £765 per tree. Stephanie French proposed 11 trees of those already agreed, which are spread evenly across the NP as a plan B, if the cost is increased. The NP reps and the committee agreed to this plan B.

Westbury Scout Group needs a helping hand THE 167th Bristol Scout Group is in need of some help and are on the hunt for some enthusiastic new helpers. The Scout Group, who meet at Westbury Baptist Church, have a leader for each group - Beavers, Cubs and Scouts - but no assistant leaders. This means that the leaders end up supporting each other’s groups which is a huge commitment, both in terms of time and energy! Sally Greenland said: “Being involved with the Scouting movement is so rewarding; watching the children grow from nervous 6 year old Beavers into flourishing, confident 18 year old Explorer Scouts is a journey that Scouting leaders follow with pride. Not all children flourish in school or on the sports field, but most come to life within Scouts. Nearly all children love being outdoors and our increasingly

urban life tyles often limit access to the 'great outdoors' and real adventure - scouting is all about both. “Helping with Scouts, of any age, gives you the chance to mentor and grow the children in your community, while exposing them (and you) to new experiences and challenges. This helps make them into more rounded and resilient young adults while providing you with a hugely rewarding personal experience. “If you are at all interested or want to know more, please make contact. The name of the game is flexible volunteering. You say what you can offer and we will work out where that would be most useful in our organisation. Be prepared that you may discover skills you didn't know you possessed.”

Stony Broke in No-Man’s Land set for stage BRISTOL folk group, The Hotwells Howlers, present Stony Broke in No-Man’s Land, a theatre production of songs, music and memories of World War 1. The Hotwells Howlers are a folk music and song group drawn from Bristol and North Somerset. They decided to home in on the war as it affected so many people in this area, drawing on newspaper reports and other narratives of the period, particularly those with a local focus. The show is informative with both serious and light hearted songs and music, as well as images and sound effects to match the stories of the war and local people. Geoff Woolfe said: “We were commissioned to produce a piece on World War 1 by the Friends of the Bristol Museum, and it was originally performed in November

2014 to commemorate the outbreak of the Great War. The presentation features songs, tunes, reminiscences and images from the period. It has been performed a number of times since then, and has always been

enthusiastically received. The group has been proud and moved to create this work, and it is made in a spirit of love and respect for our forebears.“ The performance is on Tuesday 27 June at 7.30pm at Horfield Quaker Meeting House. 300 Gloucester Road, BS7 8PD. There will be no charge on the door but there will be a collection on the night and all proceeds from the evening will go to the British Red Cross, the Howlers' chosen charity for this and other performances of the piece. One of the songs in the show, 'The Rose of No-Man's Land' is a tribute to the Red Cross nurses who looked after the injured close to the front line. Lost Illusions (Illusions perdues) by Honoré de Balzac. Translated by Herbert J. Hunt. Lost Illusions, written and set after the July Revolution of 1830, belongs to a much-loved genre: the naif who tries to enter into high society. Lucien Chardon is a poet from a small provincial town – talented, penniless and ambitious – who wishes to escape “social obscurity”, going from Angoulême to the salons of Paris. Facing social snobbery as the son of a pharmacist and becoming the butt of cruel witticisms, Lucien’s debut in Parisian society

fizzles out quickly when he is rejected by the court nobility. So close: he has worn the right clothes but they are too new to fit him without awkwardness. Lucien then plunges into the world of hack journalism, against the counsel of wise friends, and squanders his wit on throwaway pieces. He seeks literary fame via a through-road of social connections instead of settling down to solitary artistic graft. Later on, he becomes entangled in a lawsuit and then falls in love with a kind and beautiful girl. This Penguin Classics translation is wonderful. It flows but, luckily, not too much. A lot of French prose into English reads like somebody left the tap running. The word choices and phraseology here are superb. One of the joys of this novel is the author’s insider-man perspective. Balzac devotes long

Libraries fans are joining forces LOVE Bristol Libraries is a group of people from across Bristol who love their libraries and are campaigning to keep them open and publicly owned. Jill Kempshall said: “We campaign on behalf of all libraries managed by Bristol City Council and our group comprises people from across the city who have come together in the belief that by working together rather than as separate libraries, we can

offer a stronger voice for the library service in Bristol. “We aim to be a single contact point for library campaigning in Bristol and we work closely with representatives from different libraries across the city to try to ensure we can effectively oppose plans to cut or diminish the library service in Bristol.” Readers can follow their campaign on www.facebook. com/LoveBristolLib/

A Hint of Crime - get set for an evening of shady stories at library FOLLOWING the popular author event held in March, the Friends of Redland Library are organising another free meeting in June. This time the focus will be on crime stories. Members of the Bristol Fiction Writers' Group will read extracts from their latest anthology called 'A Hint of Crime', and will also answer questions about the process of being a writer. There will also be the latest news about the consultation on how cuts to the Bristol Libraries budget will affect branch libraries, many of which may be at risk of closure. The event takes place on Tuesday 13th June, from 7pm-9pm, at Redland Library on Whiteladies Road. For further details contact friendsofredlandlibrary@gmail.com

passages to describing the printing trade, the publishing industry, journalism, poetry readings, literary circles and the theatre world – all of which he knew intimately. He captures details like the distinctions between the overlapping affairs of a starlet: A bell rang out through the corridors. ‘Off you go all of you,’ said Florine, ‘Let me read my part over again so I can try and make sense of it.’ Lucien and Lousteau were the last to go. Lousteau kissed Florine’s shoulders, and Lucien heard the actress say: ‘Not a hope for this evening. The old idiot told his wife he was going into the country.’ Balzac brings a Catholic perspective to bear on his created world. He doesn’t tack on moralistic scolding about how un-nice it all is but shows that, because life ceases with death, lives centred on pleasure and egotism must end in

embitterment and decay. In another great Balzac novel, Cousin Bette, two women plot revenge against a sculptor who has scorned them. When one of them is poisoned and attempts a deathbed repentance, the other, Bette, tries to thwart it and urges lasting hatred. An angry priest warns her, “Don’t interfere with this woman’s salvation”. It’s a pity, come to think of it, that this angry priest doesn’t pop up in other books – if he had a runon part in a couple of Sartre plays it would be a blessed relief. Balzac’s warning in Lost Illusions, said in a thousand different ways, is “Don’t interfere with artistic integrity.” Lost Illusions became so popular when it was first published that the author wrote a sequel. We can revisit an older Lucien Chardon in The Splendours and Miseries of Courtesans.

Dinosaurs arrive at Bristol Zoo ELEVEN life-size animatronic dinosaurs transported in three articulated lorries arrived at Bristol Zoo early in May. They were brought from Houston in Texas in huge shipping containers. The first dinosaur to emerge today was the Utahraptor - it would tear at its prey with giant claws. Bristol Zoo’s director of commercial operations, Wendy Walton, said: “These dinosaurs will be brought to life using mechanical wizardry and specialist animatronics. “This exhibition is great fun but it also gives us a great opportunity to tell our guests about the very real extinction threat facing many species represented in the Zoo and around the world and the work we are doing to help protect them.” As the sun came up over Bristol today dinosaurs including a Giganotosaurus, half-size Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Dilophosaurus were unloaded. A team of 10 people were at the Zoo from 5am ready for the dinosaurs’ arrival. Technical experts from the company which built them also travelled to Bristol from America. The life-like pre-historic creatures which will hiss, roar and spray water will be installed at the zoo ready for the official unveiling of Dinomania on Saturday May 27.

Operetta club turns stately home into theatre

BRISTOL Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic society is taking over Kings Weston House in June to stage their next production, Ruddigore. The comic operetta will be staged in the House, using its many features as a set, including its magnificent Portrait Gallery. The portrait gallery will be brought to life in the second Act, as the ghosts of the Bad Baronets of Ruddigore chastise young Sir Ruthven, using innovative sound and lighting systems. The stunning House grounds will be turned into Ruddigore’s village Rederring, complete with traditional stalls selling produce, a tombola, a witch’s burning pit, and the opportunity to “hire professional bridesmaids” (a reference in the show) for your wedding. The show’s audience will not be sitting still - they will be invited to “travel with the production” through different rooms in the House, as the show

progresses. We will start off in the impressive Vanbrugh room as the “set” of the village, and visit the Portrait Gallery in the second Act when the ghostly Baronets of Ruddigore will mysteriously come to life. Show Director Hannah Coleman said: “We are looking forward to staging a

presenting the performance at KWH after we did a concert there. We thought “what a fantastic venue, how could we make it work?” A year of planning later and here we are!” Kings Weston House owner Norman Routledge said: “This is KWH’s first full theatre production and we were delighted and intrigued when we were first approached by BGSOS with the idea of staging their show here. It’s a great opportunity for us to work with a local group and to be able to show off our beautiful house to a new range of local people.” The show will run from Tuesday June 6 to Saturday June 10 at Kings Weston House, with the Rederring Village Market open from 5pm every evening before the evening shows and from 12pm on Saturday 10 June before the matinee performance. Yoga Pose of the Month: Chatush Padasana & Viparita Dandasana with chair

Place a sticky mat on the chair seat and turn it away from the wall. Climb backward through the chair and sit facing the wall with the soles of your feet on the floor. Holding the chair, lean back and slide your tailbone off the back edge of the chair seat until your seventh cervical vertebrae is resting on the front edge.

(Backbend over a chair)

Practice time: 1 – 10 minutes. Benefits: Chair backbends create space in the chest, lungs and breasts. They provide the gravitational traction that lengthens the spine and allows you to focus on specific vertebral levels where muscles may be tight. Practice Notes for Viparita Dandasana: • If your neck is hurting, support it with a pile of foam pads topped with a bolster • If you are practicing for restorative purposes, position your head on the block a little further back – toward the top of the back of the head. Pressing your hands against the sides of the chair, raise your pelvis completely off the chair seat, and coil the very top of your spine around the front edge of it. Feel the trapezium muscles being moved away from the neck and the area below the collar bones opening.

Viparita Dandasana

To allow the chest to arch more easily off the front edge of the chair seat, place a thickly folded blanket toward the back edge. Slide back (toward your head) until the middle of your shoulder blades are resting on the front edge of the seat. Press your hands against the sides of the chair, and and keeping your lower front ribs down, wrap yourself around the chair seat edge.

Now slide further off the chair until the lower tips of your shoulder blades touch the edge of the seat. Straighten your legs and place your feet against the wall. Thread your arms through the chair, hold the back legs, and curving further around the edge, continue the curve through the crown of your head.

Help GWAAC to land safely THE Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, is asking for help from members of the public to ensure that it can get to more patients in need in North Bristol this summer. Pilot Rich MacLaughlin said: “It can be quite challenging to find a safe place to land as close as possible to the patient, and I have to take into account the risk of landing to the general public as well as the crew and the patient. That is why we are asking for the help of the public to ensure we can land safely, and get help to the patient.” GWAAC is asking for people to follow a few simple steps if they spot the helicopter overhead: Move to the edges of the

field so that the pilot has a clear space to land. The helicopter creates a strong downwash, and so hold on to your children, dogs, and any loose items you have with you. When the helicopter is coming in to land cover your eyes, to protect them from any debris. Once the helicopter has landed and the blades have stopped turning the pilot will be happy to show you around, and answer any questions you may have.

House parents sought to create a home trafficked young people IN the UK alone, more than three children and young people a day were identified last year as having been trafficked. Over the last few years the numbers of children and young people identified has risen by 30%. Currently no specific support and accommodation exists as a suitable intervention for trafficked young people, around 60% of whom currently go missing from local authority placements. These displaced and exploited young people are being let down at the time they need support the most. North Bristol charity Unseen hopes to change this. This summer Unseen is launching its first safe accommodation project for young people who have been trafficked, with the aim of providing young people with the care they desperately need and deserve. The building is currently being renovated, the House Manager has been appointed, and a 24/7 support team is being recruited,

but the team isn’t complete. Unseen is looking for an extraordinary couple (or couples who share the task) to join as volunteer live-in House Parents for one year to turn this accommodation project into a homely, supportive and safe home for up to three trafficked young people (16+). Kate Garbers, MD of Unseen said “By creating a loving, caring, stable home, House Parents will be supporting trafficked young people as they begin their journey of recovery”. The findings of this project will help Unseen shape the provision of care given to trafficked young people across the UK. If you’re interested in finding out more about this life-changing volunteer opportunity contact Unseen's Central Office on 0303 040 288, email us at admin@ unseenuk.org or check the website (www.unseenuk.org) for a House Parent Information Pack.

n IT HOME HELP Russell Isaac runs ITHomeHelp, providing a friendly, personal, one-to-one computer coaching service in clients' home in the Westbury on Trym, Henleaze, Stoke Bishop and Clifton areas. With over 20 years' IT experience in a wealth of different areas, he helps users, particularly older people, get what they want from their PCs, tablets and smartphones. He is also a web designer/builder, photographer, father of two and keen sportsman. On Friday 12 May, thousands of computers were attacked by malware called WannaCry. It’s ransomware and stops you from accessing any files on the ‘infected’ computer until you pay the ransom. NHS computers were infected in the UK by the attack (but not specifically targeted), along with computers in over 100 other countries. It’s worth noting, though, that in general home users should not be affected by this particular piece of ransomware. It mainly targeted computers running the business version of Windows. So, What is ransomware? It's designed to scan your hard drives and encrypt as many files as it can so you can't access them. The files are still there and you have to pay a sum - the ransom - in order

Got News? Call 0117 9082121

to get your files back.Like a lot of malware, it can arrive as an email attachment. This method relies on users opening the attachment, or clicking on a link in an email, which causes the program to run. If your computer runs Windows 10, it wasn’t targeted by WannaCry according to Microsoft’s blog post. Also, up-to-date Windows 10 PCs would have been protected from the attack in any case. Only older versions of Windows which are no longer supported were vulnerable, including Windows XP and Windows 8. Even if you feel you are protected, be safe; 1. Ensure Windows Updates are enabled If you’re not sure, then open the Control Panel (you’ll find a link in the Start menu) and search for Windows Update. Click

through to Windows Update and you’ll be able to check if it’s enabled or not. 2. Back up! You should have at least one (if not two) copies of any files you can’t afford to lose. 3. Don’t open attachments unless you're sure Typically, emails from hackers won’t ontain a personal message. In WannaCry’s case, at least some of the emails pretended to be an important email from a bank about a money transfer. Either just delete the email, or call the sender and ask them if they sent the email. Unless you are absolutely sure the attachment is safe, don’t click on it.

Hospital volunteers honoured at special tea

(From L to R) Andrea Young, North Bristol NHS Trust Chief Executive, Margaret Head, Volunteer, Mike Stocker, Chair Southmead Hospital League of Friends

SOUTHMEAD Hospital Charity have hosted a thank you event for the volunteers who support staff and patients at Southmead Hospital. Across North Bristol NHS Trust there are more than 500 volunteers who give more than 50,000 hours a year – from providing meal-time support to patients, helping visitors find their way around the hospital, befriending patients on wards, or serving in the League of Friends Coffee Shop. North Bristol NHS Trust Chief Executive Andrea Young thanked the volunteers for their commitment to the Trust at the event at The Bristol Hotel on May 13. Margaret Head has been volunteering with The Southmead Hospital League of Friends for

36 years. She started in 1981 serving hot drinks in the maternity wards before becoming secretary for the League of Friends and serving in the League’s café. She still serves in the café in the Brunel Building once a fortnight. She said: “I thoroughly enjoy it. I started volunteering when my children had grown up and I was bored. “You get a lot out of it because patients are so kind, they are always praising you for being there for them, even if it is just a kind word when people have had bad news. “It was a lovely afternoon, I had not realised how many other volunteers there were in the hospital so it was nice to learn about what other people do.”

The power of community On May 19th we celebrated completing our 9th year of providing a lovely welcoming space for women of all ages, sizes and fitness levels to improve their muscle tone and cardiovascular health. Not to mention the friendships formed, this syns confessed and confidence built. I began this journey because I myself as a member of a similar gym in Fishponds provided me with these life changing benefits. It has been the best ‘job’ I’ve ever had. In fact it doesn’t feel like work at all. I’ve met so many lovely women. The community that we’ve built together amazes me every day. It’s, for me, and I think for others as well, like a family. I alone could not have created what we share at Westbury Trym and Tone and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has walked through our doors. Even if you’re not making the trip a regular event, I feel blessed to have met you all and will continue as always to make the most difficult part of your workout – getting here- as pleasant as possible. And after your workout a massage and a cuppa just might be in order to celebrate!

Yours in fun and fitness Joline Dunn

Local store supports pamper day for cancer patients

SOUTHMEAD Hospital Charity hosted a ‘Beautiful You’ day for patients at Southmead Hospital’s NGS Macmillan Wellbeing Centre in May thanks to support from John Lewis Cribbs Causeway and Clarins. The day provided fashion, colour and skincare advice and inspiration to cancer patients. John Lewis’s personal stylist, Debbie Ling, offered top tips on choosing clothes, and the Clarins team shared tricks of the beauty trade. There was plenty of homemade cake and tea available, and attendees were all given a brilliant goody bag with plenty of treats to take home. “Everyone deserves to feel special, and our annual ‘Beautiful You’ day is all about trying to give women who are living with cancer a bit of confidence and a bit of a pamper,” said Adrian Brown, Community Appeals Manager at Southmead Hospital Charity. “It's a great pleasure to be able to pamper the ladies who joined us for the day and provide a distraction from the norm.” says Nicola Mason, from John Lewis.

n PHARMACY Muffin top, spare tyre, blubber, beer gut, belly fat, beer belly, pot belly - different names but SAME RISK!

0117 9246579 18 Kellaway Avenue, Westbury Park , Bristol, BS6 7XR www.kellawaypharmacy.co.uk This column by Jess Williams of Kellaway Pharmacy aims to help educate patients on a range of conditions and provide information to help maintain their well being while also easing pressure on GP surgeries by promoting self care.

THIS year, Men's Health Week 2017 will run from June 12 with a focus on belly fat. Why? Because it's the type of fat that's bad for your health and men are more likely to have it. Muffin top, spare tyre, blubber, beer gut, belly fat, beer belly, pot belly - there are a multitude of names but they all mean the same thing. Belly fat. However, It’s no laughing matter. This body shape is known as ‘apple shape’.The problem with belly (or abdominal) fat isn't just the way it looks on the beach. It could be a sign that your health is at risk. Belly fat is around the midriff - the subcutaneous fat that we are referring to when we ask if you can pinch more than an inch and also the fat around our organs, like the liver, pancreas and intestines. It's a major health risk because belly fat is not just beneath the surface but

also gets down deep and surrounds your vital organs. Regardless of your overall weight, a large amount of belly fat increases your risk of: •C ardiovascular disease • I nsulin resistance and type 2 diabetes • Colorectal cancer • Sleep apnea • Premature death from any cause •H igh blood pressure •A lzheimer’s disease. The main cause of this shape is low physical activity and consuming a lot more calories in meals and drinks that the body needs. Drinking too much alcohol increases belly fat because of the excess calories consumed and the additional strain it puts on the bodies liver’s fat processing ability. The #bristolsugarsmart campaign is raising awareness of the inherent

risk and how to combat excess sugar consumption. A common but false myth is that spot exercises, like sit-ups, crunches and abdominal exercises, will get rid of fat around the stomach. They will strengthen the muscles but a lifestyle change is necessary to will wave them away. At Kellaway Pharmacy, we can help you bust the belly fat in a healthy and effective way. We can also screen for Sleep Apnea & take your blood pressure. Come in today for a confidential and professional advice at no cost. We approach this sensitively aware that being overweight in this way especially can rob one of confidence and lead to a lot of isolation. The jokes may be funny but they do hurt too. Men's Health Week will not do a fat lot of good unless you take part.

n HORTICULTURE TIPS

Horticulture tips from our columnist Lucy Sara IN June our gardens are flourishing, flowers are in abundance and the longer days are encouraging all plants to grow and grow...including the weeds! Midsummer is just

around the corner and this really is a beautiful time to enjoy nature and our outside spaces. Our weather seems to remain fairly wet during June these days and I am one of the few people who is grateful for this. I can design and plant gardens well into Summer knowing that the plants will thrive in the warm, wet conditions. Here is a list of jobs to keep you busy and for you to enjoy this month; • Lifting and storing your Spring bulbs will not only allow for more planting space in the flower beds but it’s an economical way of ensuring more flowers for next Spring. As long as they are lifted carefully, stored in a dry, dark place in newspaper-lined trays and not overcrowded then you can replant them in Autumn and enjoy them all over again next Spring. • Look out for aphids on perennials and shrubs – they will suck the life out of a plant and make it look quite sad. I find the best way of controlling aphids/greenfly is to remove them by hand... brutally squashing them between my thumb and finger! Soapy water spray is another method but not as

Will Writing & Estate Planning

effective. •D eadhead Roses / flowers to encourage more of them and so your borders stay looking fresh and colourful. •B ring your beans and tomatoes out of the greenhouse. Keep watering your tomatoes – watering them is key to success • S ow pumpkins and squashes ready for Halloween. They will require a lot of space. • The warmer weather and longer evenings are the best conditions for weeds to go wild! Keep hoeing and remember a dry day is best as the root will dry out and die. • I t’s been fairly windy of late so do keep tying in taller perennials (Delphiniums/Peonies/Dahlias) climbing roses/clematis etc. • F or larger Spring flowering shrubs such as Philadelphus & Weigela cut back and remove the older stems to keep the plant a good size and encourage new growth. •C over fruit with netting to protect from the birds. To encourage strawberries and prevent them being eaten - bring them in to the warmth of a greenhouse. • Water all containers thoroughly this time of year. We have had a serious lack of rain and I am

noticing dead plants in containers throughout the City! Plants will always require more water than we realise especially this time of year. •G ive Wisteria its Summer prune. The RHS website will guide you on how to do a good job. •A hoe, mow and an edge will really help your garden to look tidy if you are short on time. I have had my yearly fix of Flower Shows at Chelsea & Chatsworth where I have planted and volunteered. As always I leave the shows excited and full to the brim with new knowledge that I want to put into practice at the earliest chance. New planting combinations, new plants and new friends - I am extremely lucky to be given the chance to be involved. Here is a picture of one of my completed gardens from last year. The brief was a mostly evergreen garden with separate rooms for entertaining and relaxing with only white flowers. The garden is now flourishing and really coming into its own. The hard work of planting a new garden is always so rewarding a year on as the plants grow and settle into their new home.

n NEWS

Listen to your heart – it could be beating out a warning IN June it is National Heart Rhythm Awareness Week (5 - 11 June) and a consultant at Spire Bristol Hospital warns a heart beating faster than usual might be a sign of much more than just a flutter! Palpitations – the speeding up or changing of your heart beat – can be caused by a variety of things and the excitement of seeing a loved one can be one of them. But in some cases they can be associated with much more serious conditions. Dr Ashley Nisbet, a consultant cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist at Spire Bristol Hospital, explained: “You may feel your heart pounding or beating irregularly – often for just a few seconds or maybe minutes – or sometimes it seems like your heart missed a beat. “These symptoms may seem alarming but, the truth is, in most cases they are quite harmless. However, they can also be a sign of more serious problems involving heart valves or heart muscle function. “Some heart rhythm abnormalities, namely atrial fibrillation, can increase the risk of a stroke in some susceptible individuals so it is important to detect this to allow us to treat patients to reduce their risk.” Dr Nisbet has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of palpitations

and heart arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats). She has particular expertise is in ablation of complex atrial arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation and arrhythmias in adults with congenital heart disease, as well as expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients and families affected by inherited arrhythmia syndromes such as long QT syndrome and

Brugada syndrome. She also has many years of experience of general cardiology including the assessment of chest pain, breathlessness, and syncope (fainting). “It is wise to be aware of palpitations and how long they last and how often they occur. For many patients simply eliminating caffeine and reducing stress is all that is required to settle symptoms down. “If the episodes of palpitation last a long time or occur frequently, or if they make you feel light headed or faint I’d recommend you see your GP. They can then refer you to my clinic for assessment which will involve an ECG (electrocardiogram) and sometimes further tests to help clarify whether the palpitations are caused by an abnormality of the heart rhythm.

When we understand what is causing the symptoms, we can then explore the treatment options.” she said. “If you are worried about palpitations then the worst thing you can do is to keep it to yourself. Most palpitations are not due to a life threatening rhythm problem and some simple investigations can provide great reassurance. However, some arrhythmias do require more specialised treatment and, as with so many health problems, the sooner we detect the problem, the better your treatment outcomes will be,” she added. If you are looking for more information about abnormal heart rhythms, the causes, symptoms and treatments then you can book onto Spire Bristol Hospital’s patient information evening. On Thursday 29th June at 7.00pm Spire Bristol would like to invite you to listen to a discussion by Dr Nisbet, who will talk to an open group about this topic. She will even be providing free pulse checks for those interested. You can book a place on this event by calling Spire Bristol Hospital’s patient treatment advisers on 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com

n PETER'S VISION Peter Turner is the lead Optometrist at Turners Opticians

Looking a million dollars! One of the many great things about working in an Opticians is getting to look at (and well quite frankly spend lots of time trying on) the beautiful, stylish, colourful and simply gorgeous glasses. When it comes to choosing one, well okay maybe two, or even three… it’s actually quite easy. Keeping abreast of the current styles, dropping in on the visits by the frame account managers from whom we select the best of their frame collection for you to wear, our eye is always drawn to one or two frames that Wow us! We all have our favorites at the moment one of ours is the Tom Davies frame collection. Our patients find with these that once

you experience the comfort, fit and beauty of the British designed frames it is hard to be happy with anything else! Many of our patients comment just how unbelievably comfortable and stylish this frame collection is, and how they fit brilliantly. Tom Davies started designing spectacle frames in 2001 when he realised that patients needed properly designed frames with not only style but also exceptional comfort and elegance. His collection for ladies & gents has really taken off from there. The cotton acetate and titanium frames are brilliant - light and strong. The joy of them is that if the frame you like starts off a little too big, or a little too small, we can easily adjusts the size & fit and help

you choose the perfect colour. It’s always a pleasure for us to order you a bespoke pair so your new glasses are just how you like them. We can even discretely engrave your name on the inside of the frame side. The Natural Horn collection is truly beautiful and is entirely custom made. It is incredibly light (35% lighter than normal glasses), kind to your skin and allergy safe. The horn is a natural by-product from non-endangered domestic animals that are farmed to produce milk and leather for locals in India and Africa. Antique silk and carbon fibre laminated between the sheets of Natural Horn, produces amazing and striking effects. These frames are perfect for patients who want the best of the best and glasses

that enhance their natural features. Peter just loves his! We are really excited about our Tom Davies Open Day on Saturday 10th June 9am to 3pm, come in and see us, enjoy a glass of bubbly, and see why we are so totally in love with these frames! As well as our bespoke glasses our extended eye exam is designed with you in mind. Much more than just a sight test, your thorough & in-depth appointment includes time for your Optometrist to listen to any eye or vision concerns you may have as well as accurately checking your glasses prescription and providing you peace of mind about your eye health & vision. Appointments can be booked by calling on 0117 962 2474, via our website or you are very welcome to pop in to our Henleaze practice and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you

n PRIMAL POSTURE with

Clare Chapman

Training your dog and your posture IF you are lucky enough to live with a dog, you probably enjoy a dog walk several times a day… unless you suffer with back pain or other aches and pains. Yet the regularity of dog walking is a huge opportunity for developing better postural health - improved alignment, biomechanics and

gait - if you know what to do. By learning to use your feet and buttocks, and positioning your pelvis, spine and upper body well, you can finder greater power and freedom in your walk. And when you do bend to pick up that ball, or unclip a lead, you can do it pain-free. Bending can be transformed from something likely to trigger a ‘back episode’ into the healthy movement it should be - one that keeps the right muscles strong, hamstrings long, and hip joints mobile. See below how the back remains straight as the bend happens around the hip joint the knees can bend as necessary. Arms and shoulders remain in place, and don’t drag the upper body and shoulders around. With a little ingenuity, your daily dog walk becomes a great posture workout! Truly functional posture also enables you to engage your deep spinal and trunk muscles to protect the back when, say, throwing a ball, or to spare your shoulder if your dog pulls on the lead - though that’s best addressed by training Fido not to!

Churchill Retirement Living seeks worthy causes in Henleaze DEVELOPER Churchill Retirement Living is looking to help local causes, charities or groups in Henleaze boost their fundraising in 2017 through its Churchill Foundation Small Grants programme. Perhaps you know of a charity group that’s trying to raise funds for disadvantaged families, maybe your school needs a makeover, or perhaps your local hospice needs more equipment? Whatever the cause, big or small, the Churchill Foundation is asking people in Henleaze and the surrounding area to come forward and tell them about it. James Barnes, regional managing director for Churchill Retirement Living explains: “At Churchill Retirement Living we believe strongly in giving something back to the communities we build in. The Churchill Foundation is a new

charity initiative that we are very proud of and aims to transform people’s lives by supporting a wide range of charities. As well as working with well-known charities focusing on supporting the elderly and young people, the Churchill Foundation also offers small grants of up to £2,000 to local organisations and causes. “We are keen to support the communities in which we build so if you know of a local group, school, charity or cause who needs some extra help, then please get in touch and we may be able to help.” If you know an organisation you feel could benefit from a small grant from The Churchill Foundation, you can find out more about the application process by visiting http://www. churchillfoundation.org.uk/ charity-application-process-2/.

£1,000 up for grabs for deserving youth sports team A £1,000 CONTRIBUTION is up for grabs for Henleaze, Westbury Park or Westbury-on-Trym’s most deserving youth sports team, with ex-England footballer and ‘I’m a Celebrity’ contestant, Wayne Bridge, and ex-England rugby star and ‘Dancing on Ice’ winner, Kyran Bracken fronting the search. Worcester, Bosch Group has launched the search for local deserving youth sports teams as part of its commitment to heating up the nation’s parents and grandparents as they endure the great British weather to watch their children play sport each week. To kick off the campaign, ex-England footballer and ‘I’m a Celebrity’ contestant, Wayne Bridge, and ex-England rugby star and ‘Dancing on Ice’ winner, Kyran Bracken, returned to their grassroots to surprise players and spectators on the sidelines.

The heating supplier is now calling for locals in Henleaze to nominate a deserving youth team for the chance to receive a special visit and £1,000 donation when the season kicks off again in September. Sue Pennington, consumer brand manager at Worcester, Bosch Group, said: “Youth sport is such an important part of local communities, so this year we wanted to give something back – not just to the players, but to the parents and coaches who give up their time and energy every week to celebrate their children’s love of sport. “It would be great to visit a grassroots team in Henleaze, Westbury Park or Westbury-onTrym.” To nominate a worthy club visit www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/ rely before July 30, stating in 100 words why the team deserves a surprise visit from Worcester.

n INSIDE OUT MANY interiors can benefit from having art adorning the walls, but it can be prohibitively expensive, particularly larger pieces that have the greatest impact. If you can’t decide on a favourite artist, can’t afford to invest or simply like the idea of having a try, why not create your own? It doesn’t matter whether there is artistry in your genes or not, here are some ideas for getting creative even if you don’t have much experience. One of the easiest ways to inexpensively create a large piece of wall art is to find a metre or so of patterned fabric that you simply love, then gently stretch it across a wooden frame, or staple it onto the back of a piece of wood (ideally padded first with some wadding). If you’re feeling really brave, you could try painting your own fabric. I used powder pigments to paint the flowers in this picture, but with an attractive colour palette there is no need to depict anything at all - it can be totally abstract and the colours can be enough. The bleeding of the paint into its neighbouring hue all adds to the effect, and is definitely worth embracing rather than trying to overcome. A real Jackson Pollock would set you back literally millions, and prints just don’t quite capture the real deal. Making your own would be huge fun and a great way to involve any budding young artists in the family. n ON THE BEAT IT FEELS like summer is finally here. The good weather means my team are able to get out by foot and on bikes more easily. PCSO Zaheer Bulbul is often out and about, please do stop and talk to him about any issues you have, or just stop for a chat. I’m pleased to confirm that the CCTV camera which we mentioned in last month’s column has now been installed at Stoke Lane, covering the shops. My hope is that this will act as a deterrent to thieves and other criminals. Residents have been telling us for a while that they’re concerned about speeding on Eastfield Road. As a result, the speed enforcement team carried out a survey using speed strips, and have now started carrying out regular enforcement patrols with the speed van. You may also see the speed van on Hill View near to Henleaze Junior School, as a result of complaints we’ve received. The speed limit is 20 mph – if you break it then you may find yourself with a fine and points on your licence. Last month we took part in a national week of action aimed

at ‘rogue traders’ and door-step criminals, who prey on vulnerable, often elderly people, claiming to be offering services, to be from a utility company, or trying to aggressively sell unwanted goods. Once they have distracted the person at the door, they can try to get inside and steal. Another tactic is to carry out work on a property, without proper contracts or offering cooling off periods, and then demand extortionate sums of cash. As part of our work during this week of action, PC Joanne Robertson met with a group of elderly and vulnerable residents at Eastfield Inn on Henleaze Road, providing safety and crime prevention advice. We also visited previous victims to make sure they were confident about what to do should unwanted callers knock at their door, and carried out proactive checks on traders operating in the area. Legitimate traders welcome this exercise as it helps to weed out the handful of dodgy ones who bring their profession down. We always recommend using

a door chain and asking to see the identification of unexpected callers. Remember it’s your doorstep, your decision and if you’re not sure, don’t open the door Finally, we have been working with Lloyds Bank in Henleaze, who identified customers they felt could be vulnerable to fraud or scams and invited them into a workshop at the bank. PC Andy Stamp gave a talk at the session which was very well received. Our links with local businesses and banks are vital in helping us to keep the community safe. If you run a local business and would like a visit from one of the beat team, please get in touch via the ‘contact us’ pages of the website (avonandsomerset.police. uk). Don’t forget, you can follow what the team are up to on Twitter @ASPBristolNorth Or come to one of our beat surgeries: Friday 16th June, 5 – 6pm at Henleaze Library and Thursday 22 June, 12 – 1pm at Westbury-on-Trym Library.

n NEWS

The best of British Roller Derby comes to Bristol   SOME of the most successful roller derby teams in the UK will be heading to Bristol next month when WISE Campus in Filton hosts the latest round of the 2017 British Roller Derby Championships. The action takes place on Saturday 17 June and will feature six top-class teams – Bristol Roller Derby; Tiger Bay Brawlers (Cardiff); Birmingham Blitz Dames; Leeds Roller Derby; Middlesbrough Roller Derby and London Brawl Saints. The six teams featured make up the premier league of the women’s British Championship competition. Bristol Roller Derby was promoted to National Tier 1 after an excellent season in 2016. The local side won Tier 2 (South) and came second in the national playoffs in September to Birmingham Blitz Dames, who were also promoted. Rosie Black, captain of Bristol Roller Derby Women’s A team, said: “We are really looking forward to hosting this tripleheader event in Bristol. Having such a high calibre of skaters

We also hope that local people, who might not have experienced roller derby before, will also come along and find out what the sport is all about. “This season is going to be tough for Bristol because the quality of the teams involved is

so high, but we already have one win under our belts so we’ve all to play for. If we can fill Wise Campus with cheering Bristol supporters that will really give us a boost.” Roller derby is a contact sport played on quad roller-skates. It combines the physicality of rugby, the grace of roller-sports,

and the tactical complexity of American Football.    It is an excellent spectator sport attracting crowds of hundreds of people. An hour-long game is split into two minute ‘jams’, and the crowds cheer loudly when big hits send skaters flying.   Tickets for the event are on sale now and cost £8 (or 2 for £12) if purchased in advance. On-the-door tickets cost £10 and kids under-12 years go free. You can buy tickets online from Brown Paper Tickets at http://champstripleheader. brownpapertickets.com/ The games will take place at SGS College’s WISE Campus, New Road, Stoke Gifford, Bristol BS34 8LP on Saturday 17 June. The doors open from 2.30pm, with Bristol Roller Derby featuring in the first game at 3pm. As well as three games of roller derby to enjoy, there will be a marketplace with cake stalls and roller derby merchandise on sale.
