n NEWS by Keri Beckingham THE future of the post office in Westbury-on-Trym is uncertain after it closed for a second time in two weeks. As reported in August's Henleaze & Westbury Voice, on Monday July 23 the post office closed “due to unforeseen circumstances”, before it reopened on Thursday July 26 with a new temporary postmaster and manager. However, it shut again on August 10 and was still closed as the Voice went to print. A notice appeared on the door of the post office on Tuesday August 14, stating: “The’re [sic] closing us down!!! We need your help!!!” with the contact details for a representative of the Post Office called “Gary Adderley”.

Post Office vows to reopen branch as soon as possible Although the reason for the first closure of the Post Office was initially a mystery, Henleaze & Westbury Voice has since learned that the former postmaster, Manie Singh Ghuman, was arrested at the Post Office during the morning of Monday 9 July and has subsequently been suspended. A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police said: “We attended an address at High St, Westbury-on-Trym on July 9 to carry out a pre-planned arrest. A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of breach of a non-molestation order and subsequently released without charge.” A Post Office spokeswoman confirmed that the postmaster had been suspended since July 23. In light of the latest developments, Zoe got in touch with Henleaze & Westbury Voice to explain the situation. She said: “I’ve worked at the post office for six months, and following the emergency closure in July, a new temporary postmaster called Vikram was

employment. “I understand that discussions are ongoing with the Post Office in terms of finding another temporary postmaster and a

temporary team of staff in order to reinstate the service. “I’m extremely angry at the situation, but it is completely out of my control. I think it’s important for local residents to know the truth about what is going on, and hope that head office can find a solution to reopen the post office on a permanent basis as soon as possible.” Westbury-on-Trym Councillor Geoff Gollop added: “I have asked to meet with Post Office managers and have stressed how important the post office is to our community. So far they have chosen not to respond to that offer. It is vital this situation is resolved quickly before further harm is done to the local business and the community.” The MP for Bristol North West, Darren Jones has also written to the Post Office seeking an update following the closure of the Westbury branch. |The Post Office spokeswoman said: “We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on

We are committed to providing a Post Office in Westbury-on-Trym and we are looking to see how we can restore Post Office services to the area as soon as possible. Decision imminent for Bristol Arena THE location of the long-awaited Bristol Arena is set to be decided at a city council cabinet meeting on September 4. Amid mounting controversy about Mayor Marvin Rees’s handling of the debate, opposition leaders from the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Green groups have convened an extraordinary council meeting the day before on September 3 to discuss the Mayor’s decision on the project which will be published in Cabinet papers on August 28. There is strong support from all opposition parties and some Labour party councillors for siting the arena at Temple Island in the city centre. This location has planning permission, is fully costed and is easily accessible from all districts of Bristol and by public transport. However, councillors are concerned that this is not a view shared by the Mayor. An extraordinary session

of the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Management Board convened in June to consider the Bristol Arena Value for Money reports that were compiled by KPMG. These reports revealed that a city centre arena in Temple Island could cost £65 million more than expected, and that an arena on Filton Airfield would take just three years to build and cost £80 million in comparison, according to YTL, the private developers who own the site. Following on from this, despite Mayor Rees stating in his blog on March 23 that the decision on the arena location had not been made, a recent freedom of information (FOI) request revealed that two days earlier, a representative of the council attended a meeting on Transport for the Filton Arena introduced himself as the man who “has been appointed by Bristol City Council to prepare a statement of support for the Brabazon Arena project proposed

by YTL.” A chain of emails between Bristol City Council and YTL on April 26, revealed the statement: “We agreed that BCC would work with us on the sequential test… [which] will require the Temple Quay option to have been eliminated.” As a result of this coming to light, eyebrows have been raised in regards to the Mayor’s next blog on the subject in June, where he discussed alternative uses for the Temple Island site. On August 23, Legal and General, a major stakeholder in Temple Quarter, unveiled its vision for a major urban regeneration project at the Temple Island site, which includes hotels, office buildings, homes and a conference centre but no arena. Mayor George Ferguson has publicly criticised Mayor Rees’s handling of the arena debate, stating: “It has now become abundantly clear to me that Mayor Rees made up his mind to

abandon the long awaited Bristol Arena last December, in spite of his election pledge to deliver it.” Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze councillor and Chair of Overview and Scrutiny Management, Geoff Gollop said: “All his comments in the last few weeks indicate that he is going to decide the Arena should be built in Filton. I cannot help but feel this is a bad decision for Bristol and for the future development of the City. “The Temple Meads Arena is in the centre of our city with good existing public transport for residents from all parts of Bristol, is virtually ready to go and has detailed plans and modelling; Its costs and benefits are quantified by experts and there is relative certainty. “The alternative use for this site is suggested as hotels, businesses and housing, but these plans are far from developed. The council paid for a report prepared by KPMG:

on 32 pages of text there are 22 caveats that the figures are high level estimates, that they were prepared by the city council but have not been verified. “There is no clear transport plan for the alternative site at Filton; it must be accessible for all Bristol residents. Filton would be difficult to access from, say, Hartcliffe, but ideal for residents who live in Filton and Bradley Stoke. South Gloucestershire would benefit

from the additional jobs and businesses that would grow around the arena.” Leader of the Lib Dem group, Anthony Negus, LibDem Councillor for Cotham Ward said: “An alternative ‘deal’– for that’s what it is – with a private developer to provide an arena at Filton, includes transferring £53m of public funds (intended for the city centre arena) to underwrite their required transport infrastructure costs.

“In single-dimensional valuefor-money terms there could be more profitable options from the Temple Meads site. But that blow to city confidence and the effect on city growth, including the new redevelopment of Broadmead will boost the prospects for an even larger Cribbs Causeway and YTL, the subsidised Filton site developers.” Eleanor Combley, leader of the Green Party group, said: “All the evidence suggests that while the Mayor was telling the press, councillors and public that he would ‘make an unbiased decision with all the evidence’, he was, behind the scenes, using taxpayers’ money to employ someone to lobby for a private concern and essentially sabotaging the existing Council Arena project. I think we have to ask if the Mayor has a case to answer before the Council Values and Ethics committee.” Councillor Geoff Gollop added: “I leave you to draw your own conclusions on the fact that the Labour Mayor, who is meant to be independent and objective in making decisions, declares

on his Council Declaration of Interest that he has been entertained three times by YTL the owners of the Filton site; he omits the facts that twice was in Kuala Lumpur and once in Cannes. This on its own should mean that he steps back from making the decision so that there can be no suggestion that he has been influenced. Meanwhile, the Mayor has not met with the Temple Meads proposed operator and contractor who was appointed by the Mayor in 2017. “So here we are, with the biggest decision any City Leader has taken in many decades, with a Mayor who has accepted hospitality from one party and not met with the other, proposing to make a decision based on figures that he and his officers provided, which have not been checked in detail, and appearing to ignore the issue of accessibility, especially for residents in South Bristol.” The outcome of the upcoming Cabinet meeting will be published in the October edition of the Henleaze and Westbury Voice.

Appeal after incidents in Badock's Wood THE POLICE are appealing for the public’s help to identify a man following a spate of incidents in the Badock’s Wood area during July and August. The incidents have all involved a man described by victims as being Asian or of tanned appearance, aged in his late teens or early 20s and approximately 5ft 8ins tall. A woman in her 50s first witnessed a man walking around with his hands down his trousers between 3.30pm and 4pm on 29 July. This was followed by a woman in her 50s being inappropriately touched at about 12.45pm on 3 August and a teenage girl was touched on her shoulders without her consent at 12.55pm on the same day. A man was seen again with his hands down his

trousers at approximately 1pm on 11 August. The most recent incident involved a teenage girl witnessing a man with no clothes on jump out in front of her at around 12.30pm on 15 August. Avon and Somerset Police are treating the incidents as linked, and Detective Constable Michael Coleman said: “These are concerning incidents which have caused the victims significant distress. “We’ve carried out a number of enquiries but now need the public’s help to identify the man involved. “Anyone with information about the incidents, or who recognises the description of the man, is asked to contact us via the non-emergency number 101 providing the call handler with the reference 5218173617.

Golden Goodbye 'bad for our city' MANY residents signed Graham Donald’s petition about the departure of Bristol City Council’s Chief Executive Officer in September 2017. The petition called for an independent inquiry into the 'Golden Goodbye' to former Bristol City Council chief executive Ms Klonowski who received a £70k payment when she “voluntarily” left her post after seven months in the job. Since then, sign-off of the city council’s official accounts (due on 31 July) has been delayed because of doubts about a whole range of matters, including this payment to Ms Klonowski. For example, the city council’s heritage assets had previously been under-valued by £100 million. Lib Dem council group leader Anthony Negus commented that this amounted to “some sort of chaos” which was “very bad for Bristol and very bad for our reputation”. By contrast, Mayor Rees was very dismissive of Graham’s Petition when he presented it to a full council meeting earlier this year. Graham Donald said: “Despite residents’ concerns about the £70k Golden Goodbye to Anna Klonowski being brushed off by Mayor Rees, it’s clear that there was plenty to be concerned about. Certainly, issues around this payment delayed the city council’s accounts. We were right to be worried about it: it’s been bad for our city and its reputation.” Signing off the accounts is now expected in late September.

New book store for North View MARVELLOUS books and a whole lot more are about to arrive in Westbury Park and Henleaze, as Max Minerva’s, a new, independent bookstore opens. Launching on Saturday September 15 at the former site of Durdham Downs Books on North View, the shop will offer a wide range of fiction and non-

fiction, children’s and YA titles, plus vinyl, stationery, and gifts. A series of author events are planned and children’s creative writing courses are scheduled at the family-run shop. Many local people were sad to see the closure of Durdham Downs Books following the death of the former owner and there has been much speculation locally about what shop might open in its place. Owner, Jessica Paul said: “Every community deserves a book shop, and living in the neighbourhood we jumped at the opportunity to resurrect what had been a much loved store.”

Jessica will run Max Minerva’s with the help of her husband, Sam, and five year old daughter Aria. “She’s insisted Pippi Longstocking and The Story Tree have to be on the shelves,” says Jessica. Jessica discovered a love of books at a young age, inspired in part by her uncle’s career in bookselling. She started a small online bookstore in Australia before helping to develop collections for the Singapore National Library. Sam’s passion is for creativity in general, having worked as a songwriter, radio producer and advertising manager. Calling on his experience as co-founder of Bristol Story Lab, which ran in Easton in 2013, the store will launch children’s creative classes in October. “Story writing inspires children’s confidence and helps them unleash their imaginations. Give them the chance to speak,

Durdham Down Books, closed in 2016, will reopen as Max Minerva's in September and children have incredible stories to tell,” says Sam. Bristol’s Own Gromit sculpture inspires a day of memories BRISTOL'S Own - the First World War Messenger Dog Gromit sculpture - stationed in Queen Square, has inspired a day of memories on 3rd August at the monthly Happy Days Memory Café, run by dementia charity, Bristol Dementia Action Alliance (BDAA). BDAA have teamed up with the sponsors of Bristol's Own and supporters of the charity, law firm Barcan+Kirby, to host a war-themed afternoon tea for those with dementia, their families and carers. People attending the event held at Westbury Baptist Church came from all areas of Bristol, including Henleaze and Westbury-on-Trym. They were encouraged to bring along photographs, letters and wartime memorabilia to share stories, sing songs and celebrate memories of times gone by. Commenting on the event, Tony Hall, Chair of the BDAA, said: “We at Happy Days are really grateful for the support and encouragement we receive from Barcan+Kirby. Everyone really enjoyed the afternoon tea, where the session was led by Alive – a charity aiming to enrich the lives of older people on a World War 1 theme. "Having fun and singing some of the old songs gave great benefit and joy to everyone at the café because we are including everyone. People with Dementia

are still members of the family and community, they are just ill.” Anna Molter, a Dementia Friends Champion and solicitor at Barcan+Kirby, said: "Barcan+Kirby has been a proud supporter of the BDAA over the years and it's been wonderful to have this opportunity to host an event to benefit those with dementia. "The simple act of singing gives dementia sufferers great joy and enables them to participate in an activity that can be enjoyed by all." Let's make him 'Sir Johnny' by Christmas A CAMPAIGN has been ramped up to get the last British Dambuster a knighthood. George Leonard Johnson, who is known as "Johnny”, served a 22-year career with the RAF. The 96-year-old, who now lives in Westbury Fields retirement home in Westbury-on-Trym, took part in Operation Chastise during the Second World War, which saw the Dambusters drop bombs on dams in Germany’s Ruhr Valley industrial area. TV presenter Carol Vorderman launched a petition for him to be knighted in 2017, which received over 200,000 signatures, and Johnny was awarded an MBE in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to Second World War remembrance and the community in Bristol. In addition, Johnny also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lincoln for his contribution to British society on September 7 2017, was given an Honorary Life Membership to the Royal Air Force Club in London on November 7 2017, and on 22 June this year he also had a train named after him. However, despite the awards, many people would like Johnny to receive the

George 'Johnny' Johnson with cadets from the 2442 Westbury-on-Trym Air Training Corps highest honour in the country, a knighthood. Paul Walmsley from Reading has written to the Cabinet Office, as he believes that an MBE does not properly credit Johnny’s charity work for the Royal British Legion and the RAF Benevolent Fund. Furthermore, as protocol dictates that people can only receive a higher honour if five years have passed from the first honour given, Mr Walmsley also wants the Cabinet Office and the honours committee to make

an exception and award Mr Johnson a knighthood as soon as possible due to his age. As 2018 is the 75th anniversary of the Dambuster operation, and the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, a knighthood for Johnny this year really would be very fitting. Speaking of his campaign, Mr Walmsley said: “He's got 40 years of charity work, no one can match that. Relocation for The Bed Workshop THE Bed Workshop, established in 1984 in Bedminster, has moved from the Pickle factory to new premises at the Bus Depot in Avonmouth. Problems with access issues at the previous site led us to look for new premises. We fell for the quirky charm of the then derelict Grade II Old Bus Depot in Avonmouth, decided to restore it and relocated there earlier this year. The old ticket office entrance now provides the first showroom and leads to ground floor workshops and three first floor showrooms. We have produced a varying range of contemporary beds in sustainably sourced pine and oak for over 30 years. Beds are easily modified or designed by customers and can be stained, painted, distressed, lacquered, oiled or waxed. Styles are essentially simple and timeless. With a large range of mattresses to super king-size in stock, beds can be made, delivered and assembled in 1-2 weeks. With two of our staff in Brittany, we offer a fantastic range of functional antique French furniture. Prices are often comparable with new high street offerings. Large beds are our speciality with many dozens of king-size, super king-size and larger models. Currently our earliest is an incredible 17th century Catalan Marriage bed from Givenchy's Chateau but most date from the late 19th century. Fin de Siecle Paris produced many incredible unique beds, often specifically ordered by sumptuous Maison Clos (don't ask!). From crofts through to chateau, beds can be in natural wood, painted, gilded or upholstered with a style for everyone. Farmhouse tables have always been sought after with zinc topped and industrial/dressmakers models gaining popularity. Regional armoires are the flagships of French furniture from tiny maids wardrobes to highly carved or painted and gilded masterpieces. Empire, Louis XV or XVI chest of drawers look stunning below a period mirror. Regional pottery and vintage posters helps complete the display. With friendly, knowledgeable staff, easy access from junction 18 of the M5 or A4 Portway, parking and a rail station our new store at the Bus Depot is well worth a visit. ST KATHERINE’S is a thriving, diverse school community that has educated pupils from all over Bristol for many years. Indeed, Year 7 pupils from over 50 primary schools are joining us this September. So why do so many parents and carers choose St Katherine’s for their child’s secondary education? I believe it’s because our approach is based on the belief that, as individuals, we all perform at our best when we feel confident, secure and valued. Along with my committed team I am passionate about giving every pupil an environment where they feel safe and happy so they can achieve their full potential. We do this through our exceptional pastoral care and absolute commitment to wellbeing which makes St Katherine’s such a happy,

thriving school. We also take full advantage of St Katherine’s size to create a friendly atmosphere where every child is well known and cared for as an individual. Like our pupils, our staff are energetic, passionate and committed professionals, who stretch and challenge our young people both inside and outside of the classroom - we all learn something new every day and it enriches and improves us all. Besides our track record of academic success - our GCSE, A level and vocational subject results have improved every year for the last six years - we offer a broad curriculum and extracurricular activities designed to develop our pupils into young adults equipped socially and academically to take on the opportunities and

challenges of life. Above all, a St Katherine’s education is busy, inspiring, ambitious and great fun! Come along to our September open evening or one of our autumn open mornings (details below) to experience it for yourself. You and your child are guaranteed a warm welcome.

'Superb results are a just reward' at CGS COLSTON’S Girls’ School is celebrating excellent GCSE results and many exceptional individual performances. The grades achieved illustrate that students can be very successful at

CGS whatever their starting point when they arrive at the school. 88.1% of students achieved grade 4 or above in English and maths (83.5% in 2017) and the school is expecting to achieve a significantly improved Progress 8 score (the current estimate is 0.572, which would mean the students are achieving over a half a grade above expected progress). The new grade 9 across all subjects is intended to identify students who are performing at a high academic standard. In this context CGS is very proud of the achievements of Salma Hashim, who achieved seven grade 9s; Elle Radford, Nimmy Joseph and Nour Tazaoui, who all achieved six grade 9s and Maya Dejaegher, Abi Ndosi and Hester Penny, who each achieved five grade 9s.

Jana Ali, Martina Tancock, Kirsty Brocklebank, Lucy Britton and Tegan Rickwood all made outstanding progress between Year 7 and their GCSE results, achieving on average two grades above expectation. Principal John Whitehead said: “These superb results are a just reward for all the hard work and dedication of students.

They also reflect the efforts the teachers have put in to making sure that lessons are personalised and of a consistently high standard. “The whole school community is working together to inspire confident, ethical and compelling individuals with the aspiration and qualities to shape a better future for all.”

Tears of joy at Henbury CONGRATULATIONS are in order to all of Henbury students on their GCSE results. There were smiles and tears of joy, as students opened their envelopes to discover the results of so many months and years of hard work. This year, all GCSEs have moved to the new grading system of 1-9, with far higher expectations and levels of difficulty. Headteacher Clare Bradford said: “We were delighted to see results increase across the board from 2017, and to share the successes of so many of our students. Congratulations to those who achieved elusive Grade 9s in Science, French and Spanish. Every single student in school gained qualifications, including all our students in the Resource Base, a great achievement. “We say a particular well done to Regina Szokodi, best in school, with two grade 9s, two grade 8s, four grade 7s, a grade 6 and a grade 5. We also congratulate a number of our students who overcame some really challenging personal circumstances to achieve results which they would never have dreamed of a few months ago. We are proud of you all, and wish every student leaving us every success as they go on to the next stage of their education.”

Excellent grades round off a productive summer for Redmaids’ High Year 11 GCSE results day marked the end of a productive summer for Year 11 at Redmaids’ High School. Students turned out en masse to collect their results with A* or the equivalent 8 or 9 making up 46% of grades, with over a quarter of all grades being the highest grade 9. Subjects including German, maths, music, history, computer technology, and business studies and economics saw a full sweep of A*A or 7,8,9. Particularly noteworthy was music in which 100% received an 8 or 9 which is an A* equivalent and 82% received grade of 9. But while their exams may have been over in June, these girls have not been wasting the summer waiting for results. They have been volunteering, performing, taking part in sport and learning new skills.

Collecting their grades were some GB athletes – cricketer Maddie Hughes, synchronised swimmer Kate Shortman and fencing superstar Jade Meyer who have all had a busy summer training and playing. Last week Maddie, who got 10 A* grades

and 1 A (or equivalent), took part in two winning matches for Gloucestershire against Wales. “I’m ecstatic! I can’t believe it,” said Maddie. “I’m honestly over the moon! Cricket has been keeping me busy this summer and taking my mind off the

results, but I’m just so happy with how I’ve done.” A group of Redmaids’ High students including Rosie Owen, Faye Glynn, Cecile Taylor and Olivia Pompl-Jones have just returned from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where they performed their Grimm Tales. Another group, including Maddie Brown who picked up all A*A grades (or equivalent), took part in the National Citizenship Scheme this summer, a voluntary personal and social development programme for 15–17 year olds. Isabel Tobias, Headmistress of Redmaids’ High said, “The results we’ve seen here today show that hard work from both students and staff, really does reap the rewards. But I am also delighted that our girls display skills and talents that extend far beyond the league tables.”

n EDUCATION BADMINTON School is celebrating outstanding success at GCSE. An impressive 87% of all grades were awarded at A*-A / 9-7 with approximately a third of all grades awarded in reformed subjects at the highly coveted grade 9. Those subjects still examined at A*-G achieved some of the School’s highest statistics for a number of years and 90% graded at A*-A, with approximately half of all girls gaining straight A*-A / 9-7. In addition, Badminton’s pioneering GCSE Computer Science pupils gained 10% of all grade 9s awarded to girls nationally by the Edexcel exam board. The talented Year 11 cohort have also enjoyed plenty of successes outside the classroom as well as excellent GCSE results. Charlotte from Somerset is celebrating a clean sweep of A*-A / 9-7 and is now set to embark on A Levels at Badminton in Biology, English and Latin. At the same time as studying for her GCSEs, she has also found time to learn to fly helicopters and hopes to gain her private pilot’s license shortly after her 17th birthday. Speaking of her results, Charlotte said: “I’m

Badminton Girls fly high incredibly happy and really proud of my results and I’m excited to start my A Levels. I feel privileged to be able to do so in an environment as inspiring and supportive as Badminton.” Jenny and Cathy, both boarders, also celebrated straight A*-A / 9-7 but these were not their only successes. Jenny was part of the St Ursula’s Team that won the under-16 National Junior Badminton Competition, whilst Cathy had previously come in the top 50 nationally of the Intermediate Maths Olympiad so, with this and her 9 in GCSE Maths, she is now well placed to embark on qualifications in Further Maths, Physics and Computing. Reflecting on her love of Maths, Cathy said, “I really look forward to studying A Level Further Maths, which not only enables me to extend my knowledge and understanding, but also gives me the opportunity to tackle some even more interesting and challenging questions”. Top marks for our local independent schools STUDENTS from some of Bristol’s independent schools have achieved top marks for their A-level results. At all-girls’ school Redmaids’ High, 100% A*and A grades were achieved across subjects ranging from Economics and Russian, to Polish and Art. 53% of grades awarded to the year group were the top A*and A (A-level) or 7,6 (IB) with a number heading to Oxbridge and eight girls going on to study medicine. In addition, students at the school also achieved a first class set of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results in July, with an impressive average point score of 38 out of a possible 45, compared to the global average of 29. At Badminton School 25% of all grades awarded were A* with departments such as Further Maths achieving 75% A*A and 95% of the girls have achieved the university place of their choice. Excellent grades

mean that students leaving Badminton can go on to pursue their dreams in a wide range of different spheres and can embark on a range of challenges at top universities. Head Girl Rebecca is passionate about Physics and Music and wanted to find a way to combine her diverse interests at university. She is delighted to learn that she has won a place to study Physics and Music at Edinburgh University – one of the only places in the country that it is possible to do this combination. Students at Bristol Grammar School also celebrated some excellent results, with more than half of all grades (54%) including A*/A with 47 students gaining three or more A*/A grades. Moreover, a number of students also chose to undertake an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) in addition to their A-level studies, which consists of university level research and writing. n ADVERTISING FEATURE LOCAL nursery group Snapdragons is to open a new nursery and pre-school in September. The nursery is to be based in the former Redland High Junior School on Grove Park and is the ninth in the Snapdragons group. The new nursery and pre-school will open in two phases, starting in September this year in a modern suite of playrooms. The main Victorian buildings will undergo an extensive renovation programme by Oakland Construction and will be opening next year. The purchase of the Redland High Junior School buildings is the final stage of the sale of Redland High School’s site following its merger with Redmaids School last year. The main buildings have been sold to create housing and a wellness centre and clinic. Snapdragons, which celebrated its 20th birthday this year, was founded by Early Years teacher Rosemary Collard and her husband Paul and has eight other nurseries in Wiltshire, Bath, Keynsham and in Bristol at Shirehampton and Horfield. The group has held the “Food for Life Served Here Gold award” from the Soil Association since 2012 in recognition of its use of organic produce, ethical and environmentally friendly food, locally sourced ingredients and promotion of healthy eating. Rosemary says, “This is a great new development for Snapdragons and is in response to the high demand for places at our nurseries in Horfield and Shirehampton. We’re really happy to be welcoming children back to this building which has been a school at the heart of the Redland community for so many years. Just like the school with its direct grant history, we pride ourselves on offering very

n EDUCATION STATE SCHOOLS and pupils from across Bristol celebrated success on A-level results day. Provisional results on Thursday August 16 showed a strong performance from Bristol schools, with 95% of students achieving at least three A-levels at grade A*- E, despite significant changes to exams. This year 110 young people received three A A* grades. This is the second year of the new A-level qualifications, which contain refreshed content. Last year more challenging exams were introduced across 13 subjects, with 11 more following this year with the remaining subjects being refreshed over the next two years. AS levels also no longer count towards the final grades and students are now also assessed mainly by exams at the end of year 13. At North Bristol Post 16 Centre (a comprehensive collaboration between Cotham and Redland Green Schools which operates in partnership with Fairfield High School, Henbury School, Orchard School, and Oasis Brightstowe Academy), 54.5% of students achieved a B or above, with 39 students achieving three or more A/A* grades. Overall, 250 young people will be taking up a place at university, with 87% heading to their first choice institution, 55% moving on to a Russell

Commenting on their results, Assistant Headteachers Owen Tiplady (Redland Green School) and Aimi Potter (Cotham School) said: “This group of students have been massively conscientious and resilient, and we are very pleased that their hard work has paid off. Students

have made excellent progress this year, and we are immensely proud of them. “Our centre is a unique collaboration in the Bristol area, and allows us to offer our students a personalised experience which supports them to do exceptionally well.” Bristol Free School were also pleased with their first set of A-level results, as those who joined the school at its opening

in 2011 collected their grades. Head of Sixth Form, Richard Walker, said: “We’re delighted that our students’ hard work has paid off and to see so many of them winning places at their chosen universities. We’re also gratified that our students’ success is spread across maths, languages, science, humanities and the arts, as well as our two vocational courses.” There were some exceptional

Cajun dance club promises to 'let the good times roll!'

A CAJUN dance club is offering locals the chance to experience the taste and sounds of Louisiana, all in the heart of Bristol. Cajun music has a long history in Bristol as there has been a weekend-long Bristol Cajun and Zydeco Festival held in the city since 2004. When the festival took a year’s sabbatical, husband and wife Tony and Grace O'Hare from Bishopston decided to set up the Bristol Cajun Swamp Club in March 2016. They missed the music and dancing so much that they wanted to create a club with fellow enthusiasts in the area. Bristol Cajun Swamp Club is a non-profit making club that is run wholly by volunteers. They have a Saturday Night Cajun Dance once a month that is held at COGS (Church of the Good Shepherd Hall) just off Kings Drive in Bishopston, and new people are always welcome. Some members of the group travel to the dances from Gloucester and Devon, which have live music from local

and national Cajun and Zydeco musicians. In addition, Tony and Grace always do a beginners lesson at the start of the evening so everyone who comes along can learn the basics of Cajun dancing. Tony said: “When you hear the word "Cajun" you may think of Cajun cooking and hot spices, which is quite right. Famous Cajun dishes like Jambalaya, File Gumbo and Crawfish Pie give a flavour of Cajun music too, which is an earthy, rootsy Frenchinfluenced music particularly found in Louisiana around the New Orleans area. “The music has a motto "Laissez les bon temps rouler!" which means "Let the good times roll!" and we certainly have had many, many good times dancing to Cajun music over the 14 or so years we've been dancing.

Westbury-On-Trym Men's Club •

“It's great fun, easy to learn, and very infectious, with waltzes, two-steps, jives and jitterbug dance steps and bluesy rhythms. You don't need a partner to come along, as it's very sociable, and everyone swaps dance partners during the evening. The "Cajun scene" is one of the best things about the music - we feel like a great group of friends who meet up at dances and Cajun events.” Tony and Grace made their first trip to Louisiana in April this year to experience Cajun and Zydeco music first hand, as well as meet the musicians, eat the food and explore the bayous (swamps) that make the area so famous. The next Bristol Cajun

Swamp Club dance is on Saturday September 15 at COGS with live music from Jambalaya – a group of Cajun musicians from Bristol and Gloucester led by musician and songwriter Dennis Parnham. The Bristol Cajun and Zydeco Festival will be held at the Folk House on Park Street from October 12-14, with a lineup featuring local band Bayou Tapestry among the live acts. WHILE most of us support a number of charities in our lifetime, it is perhaps not surprising that a smaller number choose to remember a charity in their Will. Clearly the priority for most is to provide for a surviving spouse or children, or to ensure that the family wealth can be passed on to benefit the next generation. However, government policy is clearly to encourage giving to charity, and a recent development in the law is intended to promote gifts to charity being made by Will. This change may also, on occasion, serve to save Inheritance Tax, or even to create a gift which literally pays for itself.

Cycle Sunday returns to The Downs BRISTOL Downs is set to be taken over by thousands of cyclists, young and old from 10am to 2pm on Sunday 16 September. There will be a car free route for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy on their bikes. Come and soak up the festival atmosphere – join in with the Carnivelo for some fancy-dress fun or create a work of art on the paint spinning bike. Dr Bike will be there to fix your bike for free and cyclists will have the opportunity to try out specially adapted bikes, enjoy pedal powered smoothies and watch tall bikes and penny farthings whizz by. Cycle Sunday is sponsored by solicitors Barcan+Kirby and supported by many local organisations who will be offering activities on the day. The Circular Road and Ladies Mile will be closed to cars so that people can enjoy a relaxing, 3.5

km bike ride around the most beautiful area of Clifton Downs. James Cleeton, Sustrans South Director says: “Sustrans is committed to encouraging people to walk and cycle across Bristol. We have supported Cycle Sunday from the very start, giving advice and information to the group who ran the first three events in 2015. Since 2016, we have organised the annual Cycle Sunday and continue to work closely with the community of parents who founded it. The event enables young and less

confident cyclists to get out on their bikes and experience the Downs in a completely different way.” Vicki Cracknell, founder of Cycle Sunday added: “We are looking forward to welcoming people of all ages and abilities for a leisurely ride around the Downs again this year. The event is brilliant for children who can develop their skills and build their stamina on our 3.5km route. We always love hearing the stories of those who have learnt to ride at Cycle Sunday!

“A bylaw from the 1861 Downs Act prohibits cycling on the Downs apart from on a short section near the Water Tower and the shared use path along the busy Westbury Road (A4108). Our aim with Cycle Sunday is to demonstrate the huge demand for safe, car free cycling around the Downs with its 400 acres of beautiful, flat parkland. There is a wonderful opportunity for leisure cycling there, particularly if it was possible to hire bikes up at the Downs. This would enable people from other parts of the city to come by bus and enjoy the Downs by bike. “Ultimately, we hope that the Downs Committee will recognise this as an opportunity for Bristolians as well as visitors to the city. Perhaps then they would support us to raise funds for an all-weather, shared use path around the edge of the Downs that runners, walkers and leisure cyclists could enjoy.”

Local pubs go to Parliament MP for Bristol North West, Darren Jones has nominated two local pubs for the 'Parliamentary Pub of the Year' competition. The competition is in its first year and will give 650 MPs the opportunity to nominate a pub to be recognised as the Parliamentary Pub of the Year. The main criteria for nomination is a pub that's great at what they do - that can be for the range of beer or food, dedication to serving the local community, live music or local sports teams. After asking constituents for their suggestions, Darren nominated the Eastfield Inn in Henleaze and the Lamplighters in Shirehampton. Darren said: "I couldn't narrow down my choice to just one pub - so I have nominated two! Both pubs serve as vital community spaces for Bristol North West residents they are also praised for their fantastic food and family-friendly

facilities. “I am a keen supporter of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) and their Good Pub Guide which both pubs now feature in. “Pubs are at the heart of the UK's communities but far too many are closing, leaving those areas without a public place where people can socialise. MPs should do what they can to support local pubs - that's why I regularly host 'pub politics' sessions across the constituency and wanted to submit nominations for this great new award.”

There are more than 11,800 people living with and beyond their cancer diagnosis in Bristol and this will double by 2030. Therefore we’re looking for volunteers to be a buddy to someone who is currently undergoing cancer treatment in the Bristol area. Volunteers visit their buddy once a week for 3 months to provide emotional and practical support, such as taking someone out for a coffee or putting out their bins. “Every day I see people living with cancer who are a shadow of their former selves as they get to grips with the emotional and physical trauma that cancer leaves behind. “Very often those who have had

cancer don’t want to burden their family, or their family lives far away,” says Clare Davies, Macmillan Volunteering Services Coordinator. “Consequently they have no one to talk to about their experiences, leaving them to feel isolated. Our volunteers can offer invaluable support and can help clients to get back their confidence, as well as linking them into activities in their local area.” Macmillan provides training and support to all its volunteers, as well as covering expenses. If you can spare a few hours on a weekday and would like to help, then we would love to hear from you.

n FROM OUR MP

Battling for more money for schools

Darren Jones column

Your Voice in Parliament It’s been summer recess during August, so I have had the opportunity take stock of our efforts in my first year (hopefully you’ve received my annual report update), enjoy some time with my family and prepare for MPs returning to the House in September. As always, fighting Brexit and its impact on Bristol North West will be high on my list of priorities. In early August, I undertook a US-funded trip to the States to meet senators, congress men and women, and held meetings on about tariffs, Russia, NATO and our nations' shared values. I was then paired with Albany congressman, Paul D Tonko, to see how they do things state side.

Your Champion in Bristol Thirteen headteachers based across Bristol North West wrote to the Education Secretary about the detrimental impact of budget cuts on their schools. These heads have made it clear, our children’s education will be impacted by the existing cuts - and the additional £5 million of savings they are expected to find - with larger class sizes, fewer subjects at GCSE level and crumbling buildings. This situation is wholly unacceptable, and I share the concerns being voiced by our schools. I have followed up their letter asking the Secretary of State to listen to their experiences, review their funding and ensure our children get the very best start in life. To mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS, I recently met a local award winner praised for her extensive voluntary work at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. Gillian leads the ‘Friends for Parents’ a volunteer initiative at the hospital and has volunteered for an incredible 31 years. The service provides everything parents might need while their children are in hospital - from delivering toiletry packs, to running errands for parents who do not want to leave their children’s bedsides. I would like to formally congratulate Gillian on being chosen as one of the NHS70 Point of Light award winners and one of the seven volunteers selected nationwide for their health and social care voluntary work. I hope I speak on behalf of all of Bristol North West – and indeed Bristol – when I say

on my website for Forum details.

I am continuing to voice the need for much-needed investment in North Bristol’s infrastructure to the West of England Combined Authority Mayor. Following my recent Gridlock Conference, I will be hosting a constituent Transport Forum in mid-October to seek your views on the current transport system and, more importantly, what ideas you have to improve it. I will then be writing to the Regional Mayor to share your ideas and continue to campaign for at least a £50m Transport Fund. Keep an eye

n MAYOR'S VIEW

We're acting to put an end to holiday hunger

I

’M sure most of us were ready for a wellearned summer break, hopefully making the most of the weather and Bristol’s busy cultural calendar. In particular College Green was a great place for family fun with games and activates when we hosted the 16th annual Playday at the start of August. The green space outside City Hall and Bristol Cathedral was alive with the sounds of play and excitement as the biggest free play event of the summer saw hundreds of excited families join in. This year’s event also featured the unveiling of the new Bristol Children’s Charter. The Charter, a set of ten pledges that align with the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, sets out the city’s aspirations for all children without discrimination. The Playday’s central themes was ‘Every Child’s Right to Play’, highlighting the importance play has on the lives of all children

and families, but we know that for some families filling their days with activities can be a challenge. Even more concerning is the critical need to address the issue of ‘holiday hunger’. Many of our children in Bristol receive a free school meal Monday to Friday during term time, but there is currently no such provision over holidays, meaning that our children and young people are at risk of holiday hunger. My Cabinet Lead for Education Councillor Anna Keen has been leading on work which attempts to address this is through holiday clubs. ‘Feeding Bristol’ is a collaborative charity striving for a city where no-one goes hungry. It works on a range of projects, from cooking and nutrition, to growing local food and even raising awareness towards key political issues surrounding food poverty. There are a number of initiatives happening across Bristol to provide free

activities for children and we have ensured that food is provided as part of this offer. These include Fit and Fed, which operates in parks across Bristol, Unique Voice, who run creative courses over the summer, and Break Free, a programme run by Youth Moves in secondary schools across South Bristol, which reaches some of our most deprived communities.

Major Trauma Centres increase survival chances MAJOR Trauma Centres like Southmead Hospital are giving seriously-injured patients a better chance of survival. Since their introduction in 2012, 1,600 extra patients have survived nationally with survival rates at Southmead Hospital among the highest in the country. As the adult Major Trauma Centre for the Severn Major Trauma Network, the most seriously-injured patients from the local area, Gloucestershire, Somerset and parts of Wiltshire are brought to Southmead Hospital. Often patients are brought in by ambulance or helicopter bypassing other hospitals to be treated by a consultant led specialist team made up

of a variety of healthcare professionals Last year 1,200 patients were treated at Southmead Hospital’s Major Trauma Centre. One of those patients was Lucy Killingbeck who a year ago was brought in after a horse had a stroke and landed on her causing a number of injuries including a pelvic fracture, ruptured bladder and lower back fractures. “The incident happened about 8.45am, I arrived by ambulance and was impressed with how quickly I was processed and diagnosed,” Lucy said. “The care I received from the staff was fabulous and I have them thank for saving my life. I was told it was likely I would

never ride again but thanks to the treatment I received I’m hoping to compete again in a couple of weeks.” Dr Ben Walton, Clinical Director of the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital, said: “We are delighted with the latest national survival figures and see it as a ringing endorsement of all of the hard work that is put in by so many people, not only in Southmead Hospital but in the wider Severn major trauma network. “This is proof that what we have done so far is fantastic but we realise there is a lot more work to do to maintain our position as one of the best performing major trauma centres in the country.”

This is often done at the start of a class to quiet the mind and prepare for a yoga practice. Unless you are very flexible with no knee problems (in which case you can sit between your feet on the floor) you will need to sit on a couple of yoga blocks or a folded blanket or cushion. CONVERSATIONS about a man’s prostate are usually very embarrassing or uncomfortable for anyone. However, Consultant Urologists Professor Raj Persad and Mr Anthony Koupparis of Spire Bristol Hospital are promoting the awareness of symptoms and treatments surrounding this topic to get men talking. Despite thousands of men suffering from it on a daily basis, an enlarged prostate isn’t exactly the usual choice of conversation over a pint at your local. The condition known as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) does not occur because of the presence of cancer, but due to the fact the prostate continues to grow throughout most of a man’s adult life. The condition itself is not a threat to a man’s health, but it can have dramatic impacts on the quality of life for an individual. BPH puts pressure on the bladder causing a variety of symptoms including; having difficulty when starting to urinate; a weak urine flow (stopping and starting); a sensation of not fully emptying your bladder and even having to urinate more frequently (especially at night), subsequently disrupting your sleeping patterns and likewise that of your partner. A midnight trip to the bathroom is never warmly welcomed

by anyone. We asked Consultants Professor Persad and Mr Koupparis of Spire Bristol Hospital, what can be done if diagnosed with an enlarged prostate? “Sometimes presentation of prostate cancer can mimic the symptoms of BPH, so I advise you to consult your GP at the earliest opportunity to be sure. As for treatment for BPH, the mainstream therapy to date has been tablets for milder forms of prostatic obstruction or surgery for the more severe. Surgery can be fraught with side-effects excessive bleeding, incontinence and sexual problems - whilst tablets may be ineffective or cause sexual function problems.” said Consultant Urologist, Mr Koupparis.

There is, however, a revolutionary technique available which is suitable for most men, bringing relief, improved quality of life and minimal side-effects. “A new treatment called UroLift avoids the invasiveness of surgery and the unwanted side effects of tablets. It involves no blood loss or 'cutting' and takes 10-15 minutes for implants to be inserted into the prostate, prising open the prostatic urethra, restoring urinary flow and satisfactory bladder function.” explained Professor Persad “'It is being hailed the new minimally invasive treatment of the future for the majority of those with troublesome symptoms due to BPH - only in rare cases with atypical prostate anatomy is Urolift unsuitable” He continued. UroLift is available at Spire Bristol Hospital and patients can usually be in and out of hospital within the same day. The treatment is increasing in popularity as men can be put off by traditional surgical methods for fear of becoming impotent. For more information on the procedure or to book an appointment to see a Consultant Urologist, contact Spire Bristol today on 0117 980 4080 or email info@spirebristol.com.

The decline of the phone call There are so many apps and features on the latest smartphones that you don’t really need to leave the house with anything else – your handset can be your satnav, your watch, your camera, your wallet, your home cinema, your personal trainer…..oh, and even a phone too. It was interesting to see in a recent major survey of smartphone usage, that making phone calls is no longer even in the top ten list of uses! Here’s what we most often do with our smartphones currently: • Texting (88% use this) • Email (70% use this)

49

• Facebook (62% use this) • Camera (61% use this) • Reading news (58% use this) • Online shopping (56% use this) • Checking the weather (54% use this) • WhatsApp (51% use this) • Banking (45% use this) • Watching videos on YouTube (42% use this) With all these useful extras, it is no surprise that actual calls are proving less popular, although maybe we should all make the effort to dial in and catch up with loved ones using more than just emojis.

n HEALTH ADVICE

Bristol Community Health wound care nurse, Sue Murphy, gives some tips on how to look after your wound - and when to get help. How do I treat a small wound? Remove any debris, and use warm tap water to clean it. Cover it with a plaster to keep it clean. For larger wounds, buy a simple dressing from a local chemist. ‘Non-stick’ dressings are recommended. It’s been two weeks and I’m still worried.

September, 2018

Caring for your wound Wounds usually heal or start to improve within one to two weeks so if after this time there is no sign that it is getting better, you should seek advice. If you have any of the following signs, the wound is likely to be infected: • The wound is getting bigger. • There’s a redness around the border of the wound which gradually starts extending more than 1cm away from the wound. • The redness is hot and painful. • There’s an increased swelling/ leakage from the wound. • It gives off a smell. What about wounds on my lower leg? If you have a wound on the lower leg, below the knee, you need to be cautious as these wounds are sometimes affected by circulation and can be harder to heal. If your legs are swollen, you are more prone to developing a leg ulcer when the skin has been knocked. For this reason it is a good idea to

seek advice from your GP surgery if you notice the knocked area is not healing. The earlier you seek advice on wounds on the lower legs, the better. It’s okay to wait a few days to seek advice but don’t leave it for weeks. How can I reduce swelling in my legs? Swelling in your legs can make wounds slower to heal. To reduce swelling make sure you: • Take regular exercise, such as walking, as this can help circulation. If you can’t walk very well, you can still exercise your legs by moving your feet and ankles around while you are sitting in a chair. • S it with your feet raised up, perhaps on the sofa or on a foot stool with a cushion on it. Ideally your legs need to be level with your heart or higher if you can! • When standing still, move your body weight left to right and raise

Funerals from £1,995

and lower your toes. •D o not cross your legs as this slows down blood flow. • Wear light compression hosiery which you can buy from the chemist. If you have followed this advice and your legs are still swollen and feel heavy and achy, make an appointment with your treatment room nurse at your GP surgery for assessment. They can provide some more supportive compression hosiery if needed. If you have any concerns about a wound, contact your GP or Bristol Community Health’s Wound Care service, which supports patients with slow to heal wounds, on 0117 944 9733 or wcs@nhs.net. Bristol Community Health is a social enterprise providing NHS community health and wellbeing services to people in Bristol and beyond. n PETER'S VISION IT’S been an interesting summer, so far we’ve had more sun that I’ve known in years and I’ve even managed to get a sun tan! Quite an achievement really considering the amount of time I usually spend working indoors. It’s got me thinking though, reflecting back even, how I’d often spend the early part of my summer - sitting outdoors year after year pretending to be studying while watching the cricket! These days I’m happy out in the garden, at the park or on the beach. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy my work and seeing so many of you, it’s just nice to be able to balance work (indoors) with family time out and about. I do have a question to pose many of us are in the thick of backto-school preparations. New shoes, backpacks, lunch boxes, books, pens and the like. I wonder how many of us have an eye exam for the younger eyes in our families on the to do list? Probably just a few of us; if that’s you then well done I’m impressed! You’re members of an exclusive club. Mind you, there’s probably never a bad time of year to book an eye exam, so no worries

55

Look sharp! Why an eye test should be on your to-do list if you’re adding an eye exam to the to do list today! One of the eye conditions that seems to be affecting more of our younger patients is myopia or short sight. This is where your mid to distance vision is blurred and clearer with glasses. If you’re short sighted you can often though read up close quite well without glasses - which does have its benefits I can tell you! Time in daylight really does seem to benefit our eyes & help normal visual development, as well as help reduce myopia. We advise around two hours a day outdoors time; which can be spent walking to school, playing or enjoying team sports. I’m often asked how much screen time is too much screen time. Well, to be honest, and for all we do know, I’m not sure we have

a definitive answer on this one. No doubt each of us has an opinion, but in terms of hard evidence we’re still waiting for the concrete answer. I usually advise that 20 minute blocks of screen time with a good break in between, say a 20:20 split of screen time and non screen time is a good balance. If you combine this with two hours outdoors you are probably onto a winning formula. If you'd like to know what to look out for with young eyes that may need to see their Optometrist then here’s a few; reluctant readers are regular attendees in my child vision clinics, as well as those with difficulty copying from the school board, eye rubbing / blinking more than normal, using a finger to guide their reading or even sitting too close to the TV!

Whatever your ages, you & your family are most welcome to come and see us for your eye care & glasses. To arrange an extended eye exam for yourself or those you love, please call 0117 962 2474 or 0117 965 4434. Appointments can also be booked via our website, or just pop in to our practices in Henleaze or Fishponds and say Hi! We look forward to seeing you soon!

FAMILY EYE CARE FOR GENERATIONS A visit to Turners Opticians is so much more than just a sight test. Our extended eye exam is more in depth than a regular sight test. n BOOK OF THE MONTH WITH HENLEAZE & WESTBURY LIBRARIES What's On at Henleaze Library Second World War, tugs on your The Wildflowers heartstrings, and his actions and Friends of Henleaze Library meet for dates) 5:30pm-6:45pm, all by Harriet Evans

A wonderfully captivating family saga, Harriet Evans hits all the right notes here with her evocative writing and superb characters. Acting duo Tony and Althea Wilde and their two children visit their beachside property each summer. Meant to be the ideal getaway from the pressures of life, it is in fact the place where many secrets are held and relationships formed and broken. Following the Wilde family through the years was highly enjoyable. Tony's backstory, growing up as a young boy during the

choices later in life are understandable as a result. Aunt Dinah is an interesting character so kind and caring to take in the orphaned Tony but she is tortured too. If you enjoy family epics with a strong storyline then you'll certainly love this! Other titles to try by Harriet Evans - Butterfly Summer, Love Always, A Place for us, Not Without You.

n INSIDE OUT THIS year you might have noticed the resurgence of terrazzo in magazines, on tiles and even printed pattern versions on the high street. One local artisan is quite the expert at this five hundred year old technique, applying it to table tops, kitchen worksurfaces, tiles, cladding, wall art and sculptures, but it is terrazzo with a twist. Not wanting to be restricted to fabrics and yarns while studying Textiles at Central Saint Martins, Stephanie Tudor began experimenting with “any material she could get her hands on”. Now a specialist in bespoke surface design working predominantly on a commission basis, typical clients can include “friends buying a bespoke tile to an architecture firm commissioning public sculptures”. Using jesmonite, a water-based gypsum composite resin that can be mixed with coloured pigments and metal powders,

Stephanie produces fire-proof, hard wearing and ultimately unique pieces from pots to trays and splashbacks. I had to ask what the interiors trend this year has meant for her, if anything. “Terrazzo is big right now, and trends never last for long! I have definitely caught a wave of work from it which has been great, but also am reassured that my work is developing away from terrazzo effect surfaces which I am excited about.” I’m looking forward to seeing how Stephanie’s new work turns out and am avidly following her adventures on her current artist residency in Finland - casting, moulding and firing interesting things in the woods! Big medals haul at World Championships THREE students from Bristol based World Tang Soo Do Association clubs attended the World Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina during July, and came away with four Gold, one Silver and a Grand Champion cup between them. Tom Woodford (3rd Dan Black Belt), Chris Woodford (1st Dan Black Belt), both from the Frome Valley Tang Soo Do club which runs on two sites, the URC church hall on Muller Road, Horfield, Bristol and Wellesley Primary School, Yate, and Nick Davison (Cho Dan Bo) from the Bishopston Tang Soo Do club who train at St Bonaventure’s School, took part in the two day competition in the United States competing in Weapons, Hyungs and Free Sparring categories. They were part of a larger GB Team of 51 students who flew across to the USA for this competition. Overall, the GB team won 96 medals and 3 Grand Champion trophies. Tom wasn’t placed but performed really well in a very tight group. However, Chris won a gold medal for Hyungs, and a silver medal for Weapons and Nick went one better winning Gold in each of the categories. Nick was also awarded the Snr Male Gup Grand Champion cup. Instructors of the two clubs, Master Rachel Woodford from Frome Valley TSD and Jordan Chappell (3rd Dan Black Belt) from Bishopston TSD, accompanied the group to Greensboro, and were both extremely proud of the

achievements of their students. Master Woodford said: “The students have been working towards this competition for over a year, taking part in regional championships in preparation, and working hard to identify areas they could improve and develop as well as maintaining health and fitness during this long lead-up. Their success at the World Championships reflects the hard work and dedication that they have given.” Tang Soo Do is a traditional martial art dating back over 2,000 years and The World Tang Soo Do Association has maintained its links with these traditions. Competition is part of the activities that the local clubs take part in, with the World Championships held every two years in the United States. With over 1,700 competitors, the Championships are held over a two-day period and the Opening Ceremony highlights the promotions of Senior Masters and celebrates outstanding contributions by students and Instructors of the Association. Demonstrations are included during this part of the event, and this year, for the first time, an All-Female demonstration was given by over 500 students from around the world. The students had been practising a special hyung, but this was the first time they had come together to demonstrate this. Master Rachel Woodford, instructor from the Frome Valley Tang Soo Do club, took part in this demonstration, and felt that this was one of the best moments
