Mum's loving care for children earns MBE A FOSTER carer from Keynsham has received an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list. Andy Hider has fostered for 35 years and received the MBE for “services to children and young people in Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset” after being nominated by her son Ben Scott. Andy, who is now aged 74, began fostering in 1985 when she was a

single mum with three children of her own. After seeing an advert for foster carers in the local library, she initially planned just to do it in the short term. However, in the years that have followed, she has cared for more than 100 children and teenagers and is now planning to retire after making a difference to so many lives. Andy has worked with Amicus Turn to Page 2

Town's council tax precept up by 2% KEYNSHAM town councillors have voted to increase the council tax precept by two per cent from April. The rise means a Band D household will contribute £93.12 to the town council in 2020/21, up from £91.29 - an increase of 3.52p a week. The council, having finalised its annual budget, forecasts it will spend £870,173 over the financial year. This includes £40,000 towards the High Street Heritage Action Zone Project, £15,000 towards the refurbishment of Kelston Park play area and an estimated £20,000 to improve allotments. Town clerk Cheryl Scott said the council would save almost £19,000 on staff pensions next year and had saved £40,000 in staff costs in the current financial year by delaying recruitment. Dr Scott said: “Like many other councils up and down the country, Keynsham Town Council has to think very carefully when making decisions

about whether to take on more responsibilities, projects and activities that would incur more cost.” Chairman Andy Wait said the council would continue to address residents’ environmental concerns, following its decision last May to declare a climate emergency. As part of this initiative, it has allocated an extra £10,000 to the existing £20,000 available as grants to community organisations that will be ring-fenced to support environmental projects. It will allocate a further £10,000 a year for the next three years for small community infrastructure projects and will launch a call for suggestions at the annual town meeting on Thursday April 23 at 7.30pm in The Space. The council will also further its efforts towards reducing carbon emissions and single-use plastics. For more information, visit the council’s website at www. keynsham-the towntc.gov.uk

Foster carer's MBE From Page 1 Foster Care, based in St Werburghs, Bristol, during her fostering career. Set up in 2009, the agency looks for foster carers from all walks of life. It is rated as outstanding by Ofsted, is the only Makaton-accredited foster care company in the South West and currently looks after 43 children across 36 families. Andy told Keynsham Voice: “The fact that my son nominated me meant more to me than receiving the MBE itself. “I always thought they’d just grown up with it and that this is just what Mum does, and it really touched my heart strings. “Being a foster carer is the best job in the world - how many people in their careers can say they’ve made a difference to a young person’s life? “It’s such a privilege to play a role in their life, at what is often some of their most difficult times, and I understand how

difficult it must be for the birth families, too. “Seeing someone else support their child must be really hard, and I think the most important role of a foster carer is to keep up the relationship with the birth family and work with them. “If anyone is interested in finding out more about being a foster carer, I would tell them to just pick up the phone and make an enquiry. You’re not committing to anything at that stage, as there is still a process of assessment to go through. “Amicus are a fantastic small agency, and you will get 100% support and great training.” As there is a shortage of foster carers in Bristol at the moment, there has never been a more important time for people to give a home to some of the city’s most vulnerable young people. n NEWS THE Post Office in Keynsham’s High Street is set to be run by a private operator. Bosses say the change is needed to safeguard services in the town centre. But a union has attacked the decision, arguing that it puts the future of the branch and its staff at risk. The branch will be run by ZCO Ltd on a franchise basis from April. It will stay at its current site and maintain its current opening hours. Steve Blampied, Head of the Directly Managed Network for Post Office, said: “We are making this change in order to maintain Post Office services in the centre of Keynsham. “There are unprecedented changes on our high streets, and the needs of our customers are evolving, too. “Our priority is to provide secure and commercially sustainable services in Keynsham, continuing to meet our customers’ needs now and into the future. “The vast majority of our 11,500 Post Office branches, large and small, are already successfully operated by independent franchisees.” But the Communication Workers Union, which represents staff at the branch, says the decision puts services and seven local jobs in jeopardy. Chris Roche, CWU representative, said: “Keynsham Crown Post Office is an essential part of the local economy. It’s a valuable asset to the town and is relied upon by local residents and businesses, as well as people who collect their pensions and benefits. “The staff in Keynsham are well-trained and have a wealth of experience between them which could be lost under the company’s plans to franchise this office to ZCO Ltd.” The CWU is concerned about the longterm viability of the branch, as its future will now depend on the fortunes of an independent retailer. The union accuses ZCO Ltd of operating on low wages and low employment standards. Mr Roche said: “This town will lose highly skilled, unionised and well-rewarded jobs in exchange for minimum-wage-paying, insecure jobs.”

The Post Office in High Street, Keynsham, is being franchised Although the commercial decision to change the way the branch is operated has been taken, the Post Office says it welcomes feedback and comments on any issues that customers would like considered as plans are finalised. People can share their views on the proposed change through an online questionnaire at postofficeviews.co.uk with the branch code 010511. The deadline is February 12.

n NEWS COUNCILLORS have made a decision on moorings on the Mead Lane riverbank in Saltford at their latest cabinet meeting. In 2005, B&NES Council undertook bio-engineered stabilisation works at Mead Lane, where the river bank was secured with rock armour and vegetation. At the time, engineering firm Halcrow predicted that loss of part of the highway would occur within five to 10 years if no action was taken. However, after taking professional advice from a Bath-based coastal and inland civil engineering consultancy, concerned Saltford Environment Group (SEG) determined that stabilisation work of the riverbank 14 years ago was not designed for moorings (which became more frequent in 2014), creating safety fears that the road could collapse into the river. SEG brought the Mead Lane consultation and the technical design for the 2005 works to B&NES Council’s attention in October 2019. Following this, B&NES Council held a consultation with independent consultants Lemon Gazelle, which involved a series of events with residents, boaters and stakeholders, and generated a total of 1,251 responses. At the meeting on Thursday January 16, councillors agreed: l to undertake a structural survey of the riverbank at Mead Lane, and as part of the survey consider the suitability of this land for future moorings (subject to approval of the revenue budget provision by cabinet/ council in February 2020) l that officers would report back to cabinet once the results of the structural survey are

Boats moored along the riverbank in Mead Lane, Saltford, where a structural survey will take place known, to enable cabinet to make an informed decision on the long-term use of this land. l that the moorings at Mead Lane will be removed within 21 days and officers will also undertake further analysis of residential mooring arrangements along the river, to include arrangements for boaters and their families. Once the investigation is completed, SEG and Saltford Parish Council (SPC) will seek the designation of Mead Lane from the council as a Local Nature Reserve (or similar) to help protect the vegetation that secures the rock armour.

The group also hope the repairs to the riverbank will not be as expensive as the six-figure sum spent on installing the now-compromised stabilisation scheme in 2005. Wessex Water, whose sewage treatment facility had also been put at risk as a result of moorings being allowed in Mead Lane, has also backed the case for rescuing the stabilisation scheme put forward by SEG and SPC. Speaking about the decision, Saltford ward councillor Duncan Hounsell said: “The moorings trial is an experiment which hasn’t worked. "From the start, proper

processes and residents’ views were ignored. “This is an unsuitable location for moorings. No proper facilities were provided, leading to the deterioration of the riverbank. There is a risk that essential infrastructure could be damaged. “I’m pleased that the new Lib Dem administration is listening to local people and will initiate a structural survey. “In the long term, we must secure the stability of the riverbank, restore it to public open space and ensure there are enough suitable moorings within the council area for live-aboard boaters.”

Community fridge is such a cool idea KEYNSHAM is set to have its own community fridge, after plans by a local group gathered pace. A community fridge is a fridge located in a public space. It enables fresh food to be stored and shared across a community, rather than being thrown away, and local suppliers are also able to donate food that is safe to eat but surplus to requirements. This food is then made available to anyone who wants it, helping to address food poverty and supporting those who might be facing hardship. The main purpose of a community fridge is to reduce food waste. Each year, around 10 million tonnes of food waste is produced across the UK, which means the average UK family wastes £810 a year by throwing away food and drink, and £3 billion a year is also wasted by food sectors. Of this total, it is estimated that 60 per cent (6 million tonnes) of food waste could be avoided.

Share it, don't bin it - a community fridge like this is set to be located in the Temple Street Canteen There are now more than 50 such community fridges operating around the country as well as in Europe. The Keynsham Community Fridge group have been exploring how to set up a community fridge in the town for a couple of years, having been

of local community and environmental groups as well as local councillors, Keynsham Community Fridge (with support from Keynsham Rotary Club) has now bought a fridge which is being located upstairs in Temple Street Canteen. The project hopes to launch in a limited way in the coming months and is now seeking volunteers to help support the project by collecting surplus food from local suppliers. Commenting on the support that is needed, Mike Burke, chair of Keynsham Community Fridge, said: “We are currently a team of six and we are looking for more volunteers to support us. “Everyone who volunteers will be trained in food handling, and we are really excited for the project to launch soon.” To find out more, visit the Keynsham Community Fridge Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ Keynsham-CommunityFridge-2459361917621546

Love and your pet

February, 2020

n NEWS The Holmoak play area at Bilbie Green will now be run by the town council

T

oday we would like to discuss how you know that your pet loves you, and ways you can show that you love them back. We humans just love hugs! For us it's a sign of affection, but some of our pets would prefer us not to hug them as they find this very uncomfortable. Some of the ways our pets show they love us are more obvious than others. When it comes to dogs and cats, some dog owners believe cats are not affectionate at all, but cat owners know differently. Dog behaviours and what dog and cat owners may think of them: Nosing (action of shoving snout into your person) Dog owner: a sign of affection wanting your attention Cat owner: that is annoying! Licking Dog owner: I love you so much Cat owner: do I have food on my hands? Jumping up Dog owner: excitable, loving act of enthusiasm Cat owner: he's going to get me all dirty! Full-on body wag Dog owner: he's so happy and excited to see me Cat owner: that dog is over the top! Cat behaviours and what cat and dog owners may think of them: Head butting Cat owner: they are leaving their pheromones all over you, letting everyone know you belong to them Dog owner: what is this cat doing?! Kneading/puddying (action of gently clawing) Cat owner: the most intense way cats show their love and affection Dog owner: ouch, that hurts! Purring Cat owner: a special little motor inside that just goes crazy when they are feeling relaxed and happy Dog owner: your cat’s making funny noises - I think it wants something!

The unconditional love our pets show us is priceless, whether through a nudge with a cold, wet nose or a gentle purr and head butt. Whether you share your life with a dog, a cat or both, take time to show them every day how much you love and appreciate them. Our pets give us so much. They offer us friendship and companionship, and they reduce stress, which is great for our health. How can you show your pet how much they are loved? As humans we love to give food, but there are much better ways to show affection, particularly since so many of our pets are overweight - but that is a topic for another article! All pets love a good, comfy bed, so why not spoil them with new bedding, as we all know they can spend hours snoozing during the day. A new toy is always fun too, particularly if you take the time to play with it along with them. Time is the best thing you can give your pet. Just a bit of quality time taking your dog for a nice, long country walk or spending quiet time in the sun with your cat is the best way to show love. Whatever you decide to do, give them some love every day. They certainly give it to you.

THE Holmoak play area at Bilbie Green has been adopted by Keynsham Town Council, which will now own and manage it for residents. The council had previously decided it could not afford to do so, after talks with the developer fell through about a year ago. This meant Bilbie Green residents would have to pay a management company to maintain it through increased service charges. Council chairman Andy Wait said: “The council has been mindful of the impact the decision not to adopt would have on Bilbie Green residents. “Since its announcement last year, the town council has been involved in confidential discussions with the developers to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. “It is very important to our residents that existing recreational and green space areas are maintained and improved and new ones created as the town continues to expand.” He said the council would set aside an amount each year to build its reserve for play area refurbishment and is working with B&NES Council on a strategy for managing and maintaining all recreational and green spaces in Keynsham.

Play area adopted by council For more information, visit the town council’s website at www.keynsham- tc.gov.uk l Feedback from children and schools will be used to improve Keynsham’s play areas. The town council survey on play areas and green spaces received an “excellent response”, with more than 350 youngsters contributing. The survey results will help the council as it looks to upgrade the town’s play spaces. The survey revealed that the top three play areas were: 1st Upper Memorial; 2nd Kelston Park; 3rd Manor Road. The favourite play equipment was: 1st swings, 2nd space nets; 3rd climbing frames. The children voted for future themed play areas, and the results were: 1st dragon theme, 2nd mountain towers theme; 3rd wildlife pond theme. The full results of the survey are to be published on the NDP page of the town council website at www.Keynsham-tc.gov.uk

Protest over plans for extra flights

Red alert - demonstrators in Keynsham raising awareness of the Bristol Airport expansion plans CAMPAIGNERS in Keynsham fighting plans to expand Bristol Airport staged a protest march through the town centre. The event, to raise awareness of the airport’s plans, began at the bandstand and included a samba band. It follows a public meeting in the town, as reported in last month’s Keynsham Voice, at which residents voiced their fears that adding 23,000 extra flights a year would wipe out any remaining peace and tranquillity for

people living under the flightpath. They are also concerned about increased traffic and pollution. The plans to double passenger numbers will see an increase in flights over Keynsham, especially during the summer months. Campaigner Rich Prior said: “The level of noise from the planes does already affect people, particularly in the summer when windows are open. The increase in night flights will have a significant health impact

on some. However, the biggest concern from many - with increasing awareness of climate change and the climate emergency – is that we need to cut greenhouse gasses and not increase them as this proposal will do. “We need to head to carbon neutrality now, but this proposal is completely contrary to any targets.” Anyone wishing to object to Bristol Airport expansion can do so at http://www. stopbristolairportexpansion.org/

ON THE BEAT

Manic month keeps your local police busy

D

ecember is always a manic month for all the emergency services, and we are no exception. Your local police have been busy dealing with more incidents than normal, taking part in Operation Tonic (against drink and drug drivers) and Project Servator (to create a highvisibility deterrent against a range of criminal activity), as well as providing additional cover for the extra night-time economy that this time of the year brings. In Keynsham, the Neighbourhood team, with support from Bath officers, ran a successful drugs warrant, where we found controlled drugs for which the offender has been dealt with. We also suffered some household burglaries, but I am pleased to say that the offender was caught inside one of the

with PC James Evans

properties and the incidents were quickly linked. He was sent to court and we are awaiting the outcome. Unfortunately, we have also had a number of violent incidents, but these have been dealt with promptly - I am aware of the social media fallout from these. n We had two unrelated incidents on the Chocolate Quarter, one of which concerned

a single property. This was an isolated incident where the location was not linked to the offenders and the property’s occupants were not the intended targets. We have been working with our partner agencies to reassure residents following this incident. In the second incident, a number of properties and vehicles were damaged by the Chocolate Quarter. Again, there was no link to the offender and the properties or vehicles. The offender was quickly apprehended at the scene by officers and has been charged. The offender has also been given conditions not to attend the location of the incidents and will be arrestable if in breach. It’s sad that I have to update you on such mindless vandalism, but it’s an unfortunate fact of life and one we aim to deal with

promptly and with the minimum of impact. n Keynsham has been in the press this month with the protest by Extinction Rebellion against, among other things, the proposed expansion of Bristol Airport. The Neighbourhood Policing Team were in attendance to allow this protest and make sure it went off with the minimum of interruption to the local community. The other newsworthy incident concerned a male living on the Wellsway who had passed away. A search of his home revealed what were believed to be firearms, and the bomb squad was called to ensure everything was safe. It’s interesting how the rumour mill works, as I was getting messages that people had been seen walking around Keynsham with guns. This was not the case.

n NEWS NEW designs to enhance Keynsham town centre and create a better environment to encourage more walking and cycling have gone on show to the public. Bath & North East Somerset Council’s detailed plans for Keynsham come after improvements to the public realm were highlighted as a key priority by local people in a consultation held between November 2018 and January 2019. Permanent improvements to the public space between Bath Hill and Charlton Road will include footpath decluttering, widening and resurfacing, better signage, cycling and bus stop facilities, new street furniture, streetlights, landscaping and trees. Work is expected to begin this summer. The scheme is funded by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership through the Local Growth Fund, administered by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), which supports economic growth in the region. The council was awarded £1.5 million towards the cost of implementing the first phase of public realm improvements in June 2019, and the scheme will help create a better shopping environment, encouraging more trade and supporting the local economy. The public-realm enhancements come on top of a range of investment for the town, including the Riverside View redevelopment of the council’s former offices into apartments and improvements to the leisure centre facilities. Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community

Take a look at town centre plans - and have your say

Work to improve Keynsham town centre is expected to start this summer Services, said: “We recognise that it is important to residents in Keynsham that their High Street becomes a nicer place to be. I’m excited that we can now share the detail of our plans to revitalise the town centre and improve sustainable transport by encouraging more cyclists and bus users. “Keynsham town centre is set to benefit from significant investment over the next few years which will go a long way to keeping its position as a successful independent centre and the focus of Keynsham’s public life.”

Since the funding was committed, the council has been developing the detailed design and specifications which has included on-site survey work as well as meeting with various stakeholder groups to develop the final layout of the scheme. Professor Steve West, chair of the West of England LEP, said: “This is a great opportunity to enhance the appeal of Keynsham for shoppers, visitors and workers – making it easier and more attractive for people to check out what the town offers. It’s brilliant that we can help make this ambition become a

reality through the Local Growth Fund.” Before the council finalises the scheme, it is seeking comments from the public. The proposals have gone on show at Keynsham Library, where people will be able to see them until February 8 during normal library hours. Alternatively, they will be available online at www. bathnes.gov.uk/keynsham Following the exhibition, feedback will be reviewed to inform final proposals, with construction expected to start in the summer.

New Head joins Royal High School

R

OYAL High School Bath has welcomed Mrs Kate Reynolds as its new Head of School. Mrs Reynolds moves from Leweston, where she has been Head since 2015 and was previously Head of International Boarding whilst teaching English and Drama – before that, she taught at Sherborne, and Gillingham School. Mrs Reynolds has a commercial background, having practised Law and brings a breadth of experience to her role. “There is so much to celebrate at Royal High School Bath," Mrs Reynolds said. "Friendly, engaged and curious girls, supportive staff who go the extra mile because they care hugely about the school, and an exciting and challenging learning environment. "The girls’ energy and determination yet down to earth groundedness makes for a very special school of which we should all be proud. I am humbled that I

can be part of such a remarkable establishment." Royal High School Bath is preparing to welcome girls and their families to their Open Days where visitors can explore the school, talk to staff and pupils and meet Mrs Reynolds and new Head of Prep School, Mrs Claire Lilley.

Meet the Head Do you still do any hands on teaching? My ideal day involves some time in the classroom. If I am not teaching, I will cover a lesson for a colleague so they can observe other lessons or complete some planning or research. Mustering for a fire practice with a Reception class covered in glue and cotton wool after one disastrous cover lesson at my former school reminded me of the incredible job our teachers do day in day out with our children. What are the qualities of a good

teacher? Passion. The joy of the independent sector is that as passionate teachers we can enrich our students way beyond any constraints of a national curriculum. Young minds are phenomenally elastic and to imbue them with curiosity and a love of learning is critical if they are to become lifelong learners.

Why specialise in girls’ education? Outstanding education is about equipping children to be as successful as possible in their chosen field. Having taught in co-ed, all boys and all girls schools I have seen how girls really can flourish and develop the positive mind-set needed to negotiate life after school.

n NEWS PLANS to improve maternity services for people in Keynsham have been approved. The proposals include the creation of an Alongside Midwifery Unit at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, whose maternity unit serves people in the Keynsham area. Antenatal and postnatal care will be enhanced throughout the region, and homebirth services will be improved and better promoted. The decision to approve the proposals has been taken by the joint governing bodies of Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (BSW CCGs). It follows three years of consultation with more than 4,000 mothers, families, staff and partners in the community to develop a new vision for maternity services, proposals for change and final recommendations. Sarah Merritt, Acting Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, said: “These proposals will help us provide more choices for birth to more women and will build a strong foundation on which to enhance continuity of care, so that more women can see the same midwife or small team of midwives before, during and after labour.” She said the addition of the Alongside Midwifery Unit at the RUH would give birthing mothers a new option for labour and delivery. “Our midwives and staff are excited to embrace this new way of working in purposebuilt facilities,” she said. Dr Ruth Grabham, Medical Director for Bath and North East Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group and a member of the governing body, said: “We are very grateful to everyone who gave their time and expertise over the last three years as this proposal was developed and refined. "From mums and dads who use the services to clinical experts and local organisations – everyone has helped to steer a path through the complexities of service change.” Chaya Tagore, Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) Lead and a member of the expert panel that reviewed the

The Royal United Hospital in Bath is to get an Alongside Midwifery Unit consultation results and developed the final recommendations, said: “I encourage expectant parents and those who have used maternity services in the last five years to get involved with the MVP. “The next steps as new community hubs are developed, where women can access integrated care from pre-conception to postnatal care, are wonderful opportunities for co-creation. As MVP volunteers, we are

really excited about enhanced support for home births and ongoing care.” More information can be found on the Transforming Maternity Services Together website www.transformingmaternity.org. uk. Tots help roll back the years RESIDENTS at a retirement complex in Keynsham have been feeling much younger, thanks to regular visits from nursery tots. Men and women at Abbeyfield House have been enjoying the company of children at Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-School since September. The youngsters have also been calling in on residents at Kift Lodge, next to Hanham Common. Each week, nursery staff bring three and four-year-olds along to enjoy a variety of planned activities. Retirement home manager Joleigh Hayward says the visits have introduced a new lease of life into the houses, which are run by housing charity the Abbeyfield Society. Abbeyfield and nursery staff agree the initiative is benefiting both children and adults. Joleigh said: “Some of the residents don’t get to see their

grandchildren as often as they’d like, so the nursery children’s visits are a real tonic, and many of the residents say they feel it’s keeping them young! “After the first couple of weeks, it was lovely to see new bonds forming between the generations.” Mama Bear’s team member Ashley Shellard said: “We’ve noticed a huge boost in the children’s confidence and self-esteem, and we’re delighted to such receive positive feedback from residents, too.”

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

n NEWS

Climate change in the spotlight

with Transition Keynsham

Cold future for fossil fuels

T

HE writing’s on the wall for fossil fuels. This January there were two big announcements that will make fossil fuel businesses deeply worried. Firstly, BlackRock, the world’s biggest fund manager, will divest from thermal coal. BlackRock’s boss says the company is committed to putting sustainability at the heart of its investment decisions. He argues that the climate emergency is beginning to change how investors view the long-term prospects of companies, predicting that “in the near future … there will be a significant reallocation of capital.” Secondly, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK will no longer allow foreign aid money to be spent in support of coal mines or coal power plants. At a UK-Africa summit, he said there was “no point” in the UK reducing the amount of coal it burns if it encourages developing nations to use more of it. In a sign that the government is beginning to take the climate emergency seriously, he said: "We all breathe the same air, we live beneath the same sky, we all suffer when carbon emissions rise and the planet warms." What’s bad news for the fossil fuel giants is good news for the renewable and low-carbon

industries. Investors are increasingly looking at the long-term prospects of companies and asking questions about sustainability in the face of climate change. This is important because most people have a pension and can tell their pension fund what they do and don’t want their pension pot invested in. ShareAction helps people get their voices heard over the investments that are made on our behalf. As fossil fuels become increasingly marginal in our energy mix, ‘decentralised’ energy systems (where power and heat are generated and consumed locally) are taking off. Community energy companies set up and run community-owned projects that generate power which is sold locally. Any surplus profit is ploughed back into the community via a fund which tackles issues from fuel poverty and carbon reduction to other environmental concerns. Keynsham Community Energy is our local community energy company. You can find out more about it at www. keynshamcommunityenergy.org.uk Liz Barling n Author dares us to dream: Page 42

AN EVENT focusing on climate change and the environment is to be held in Keynsham. It is being organised by the town council, which has declared a climate emergency. It will include talks by speakers and information about climate and environmental issues. The free event will be held in The Space, above the town’s library, on Saturday March 14, 10am-2pm. For more information, email Dawn Drury, Deputy Town Clerk, at deputytownclerk@keynsham-tc.gov.uk

Aid for energy group KEYNSHAM Community Energy (KCE) has received a grant from the Bath and West Community Energy Fund. KCE’s project will help people in Keynsham cut their fuel bills and keep their homes warm. The grant, for £2,970, will pay for energy efficiency training for Keynsham Community Energy volunteers. It will also support a KCE stall at five events in Keynsham that will advise householders struggling to keep their homes warm.

Get a close look at Roman treasures

VISITORS will get a close-up view of remarkable objects from the past at an open day in Keynsham. They can join the Roman Baths team at the Archaeology Store to explore treasures from the Roman to medieval periods. The store in Pixash Lane, Keynsham, will be open for two tours (11am and 2pm) on Thursday February 20 during half term. The tours will be led by the Roman Baths Collections Team, who care for and curate archaeological collections from the whole of Bath and North East Somerset. Many of the beautiful objects discovered in Keynsham are on display at the town’s library and one-stop shop, but museum stores are excellent places to see behind the scenes and find out more about objects that are not currently on show. During the tours, visitors will have the chance to handle objects including Roman mosaics, coins and small personal items such as brooches and tweezers discovered in areas of Keynsham that were once part of a Roman settlement possibly known as Trajectus. The tour will also guide visitors through stunning stonework from Keynsham Abbey, including ornamental stone bosses that were an important part of the abbey’s vaulted chapter house. Booking for the tours is essential. To reserve a place, please call 01225 477773.

Register your baby's birth here! BIRTHS can now be registered at Bath’s biggest hospital thanks to the launch of a new service. Busy new parents to babies born at the Royal United Hospital will be able to avoid an extra task and take their newborn home along with a certificate of their birth. Staff from Bath and North East Somerset Council’s register office are available on Monday to Thursday mornings at the RUH’s Mary Ward birth suite to register babies. RUH maternity matron Di Dorrington said: “Any parent with a newborn baby will tell you that making the birth registration process easier is a great idea. "Being able to do it here and now at the RUH and avoiding tiring journeys into town can only be a benefit.” Birth certificates cost £11 each. The service is available to B&NES residents only. Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for community services, said: “Registering a

Also pictured are county registrar Cindy Aze, left, and interim ward manager Aisling Seal birth is a legal requirement that all parents need to ensure is done within 42 days of their baby’s birth, but often travelling to a register office can be an extra strain. “Our new service will make it easier for parents to get the paperwork done then and there, as well as reduce the number of journeys they have to make with a newborn in tow. I hope lots of residents will take advantage of the service and that it makes life easier for them.”

Anyone not wishing to register their baby at the RUH birth suite is still able to register a birth at the Guildhall in Bath city centre or within the council’s library and information services at Midsomer Norton or Keynsham by making an appointment. People who live outside Bath and North East Somerset but had their baby within the district should register their baby at their local register office, and their certificate will be posted to them.

I

n December, we let you know about our theme for 2020 – ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ in memory of Dee and we are now busy preparing our competition entry forms, planting schemes, annual trail and other projects all connected to bright and cheerful rainbows. Entry forms for our 2020 In Bloom competition will be sent out to all previous entrants towards the end of February, but we would welcome interest from any new entrants in the following categories: youth and young people gardening/ conservation projects, schools, residents’ gardens, business floral displays, churches, and allotment entrants. If you would like to more information or express an interest in receiving an entry form, email Dawn using the contact details below. Our 2020 trail is rainbowcoloured chairs (decorated with potted plants, flowers or covered with floral stickers). Entry forms will be available in March, trail maps available from the beginning of July, and the trail will run from mid-July to the end of August. Further details will follow. If you would like to enter but do not have an old chair to decorate and display as part of

the trail, let us know and we will try to help you find one. Also, if you have an old chair that you would like to donate, we would welcome these. n Last month, we told you about our super four-tier cascading flower planter kindly donated by Amberol, and we are happy to report that we have now been given permission to locate this by the entrance to Keynsham library as a lasting memory to Dee. This is something that our members, residents and visitors to the town will be able to enjoy for many years to come. n The In Bloom Group are currently nervously awaiting the outcome of their grant submission for Pocket Park funding and, if successful, we will begin our work on the small park at the top of Avon Road, transforming it ready for judging in July. We are grateful to the many local community organisations

that have already pledged to assist with our plans for this park. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we are successful, as our plans for this park are in the region of £9,000. n Do you enjoy knitting, crochet and crafts? If so, why not join the Keynsham In Bloom crafters with their 2020 projects, to make Keynsham a brighter place? This year’s projects including knitting flower pots for a shop window sweet cart, knitted/ crocheted flower hanging baskets to go into various shops in the High Street, and a rainbow of flowers. For the Royal British Legion VE celebrations, the group will also be making a Union Jack out of pompoms. The next meeting of the In Bloom craft group is on Friday February 21 in the afternoon, at the Royal British Legion on Charlton Road. If you cannot make the group meetings but want to join in, you can do this at home. We will be very pleased to receive any knitted/crocheted flowers or red, white and blue pompoms.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Was Keynsham bombed in the war?

T

he Second World War saw major German air raids on the city of Bristol between November 1940 and April 1941, while in April 1942 Bath was targeted in the so-called “Baedeker” bombing raids. In between was Keynsham. Clearly the town was not a target of any strategic value, although the Somerdale factory was. A large part of the factory had been taken over by BAC and used for the manufacture of aircraft parts and as a drawing office. It was struck by one bomb, which hit the laboratory but did not explode. Although not a target, some bombs were dropped on Keynsham and the surrounding farmland, probably by planes that were lost or needed to jettison their load. Remarkably, only one building in the town was hit by a bomb, and that was 59 High Street, the premises now occupied by the British Heart Foundation charity shop. This was a time when the High Street was not a continuous row of shops, and several private houses fronted the street. No 59 was one such property, and next to it was a tiny shop, built by Mrs Carter in 1923 so that her friend Mrs Halliday could open Keynsham’s first ladies’ hairdressing salon. On August 24, 1940, during a raid on Bristol, an oil bomb hit the roof of No 59 and set it on fire (an oil bomb was an incendiary device containing an oil mixture with a high explosive charge). The two occupants, the elderly and infirm Jane Wallis and her daughter, were rescued with some difficulty from the burning building

by local painter and decorator Luther Bees, who was later commended for his bravery. He was assisted by an Australian soldier, Private Frederick Marshall, whose car had broken down nearby. After the bombing, only the shell remained but by the end of 1940 the gutted building was made good by Edward Wiggins’ building firm at a cost of £221 5s 4d. The shop became Jolyon's when Mrs Kathleen Bees took it over in 1953. Many other bombs fell around the town, including near the cricket ground and Manor Road, but as far as we know, no damage was caused. One night, a stick of bombs fell in a line across the fields between what is now the Broadmead roundabout and the Wellsway School area. The local policeman roused the farm hand and he had to go and check the livestock. He found a couple of cows rather mudspattered but unhurt – although it has been recorded that milk yields were down next day! February Meeting – Bath Abbey

In a change to our previously advertised programme, the society’s next Monday evening meeting on February 17, starting at 7.30pm, features a talk on the Footprint Project at Bath Abbey. John Barnes will tell us about this huge project, which involves replacing the abbey’s floor and unearthing the archaeology beneath. Visitors are welcome to join us at St Dunstan’s Catholic Church Hall on Bristol Road, Keynsham. Richard Dyson

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Philippa Traynar

can love someone ‘ IfwhoGodcheered on as

Youth Worker Keynsham Parish

A

s we approach February, our thoughts might naturally turn to love, with Valentine's Day fast approaching. As I write this, in the church’s calendar and in youth group on Sundays, we are celebrating the conversion and life of St Paul. But what does that have to do with love? Well, bear with me and I will try to explain. The change God brought about in Paul, following his conversion on the road to Damascus, was enormous. He went from being the most passionate persecutor of Christians to being one of the most dedicated of Christians. Apart from Jesus, Paul has probably had the biggest impact on the Christian church that still continues to this day. In Act 9:15, God says to Ananias, who he sends to heal Paul from his blindness: “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel…”

people were killed for their faith, then he can surely love each one of us too

Paul had become the chosen apostle to share with the world that Jesus and the love of God is for all people (known as gentiles) and not just for the people of Israel. Paul went on to travel far and wide and wrote many letters that still inspire us today. Paul shows us that when you truly encounter God, you just can’t stay the same afterwards. This is where the love comes in. The God we believe in as Christians is a God full of love that is unconditional and a love that is for all. If God can love someone who cheered on as people were killed for their faith, then he can surely love each one of us too. St Paul’s enthusiasm is an encouragement. Too often we feel that we can’t make a difference in the world so think there is no point in doing anything. But inside each of us is the power to be influential and make a real change. We only have to believe.

Staying informed with talking news

HAVE you always enjoyed reading but now find it hard due to poor eyesight or blindness? Then Keynsham Talking Newspapers (KTN) can help you with its free service. This was explained when Edmund Prideaux was guest speaker at a meeting of the Inner Wheel of Chelwood Bridge. He told how Mary Burnard set up KTN in 1983, recording news items onto cassette tapes with the help of volunteers. More than 200 people in Keynsham, Bristol and Bath now receive free weekly recordings of local news and features in the post – with memory sticks now replacing the old tapes. To find out how to volunteer or use the service, go to www.ktn.org.uk or call 0117 299 3021. l Pictured, Edmund Prideaux with Inner Wheel president Sandra Blair.

CHILDREN at St John’s Primary School in Keynsham are being inspired by rockets, planets and the moon for their topic about space. To blast off into the theme, pupils in reception class dressed up in space clothes and spent a day learning and experimenting with rockets. A local physics teacher visited the school to show the children how rockets could be launched high above the playground. A rocket, made from a bottle filled with water, was launched

using a bike pump, special valve and lots of energy. Pupils used their numeracy and literacy skills to describe how high the rocket went. Back in the classroom, they were able to make and launch their own smaller rockets using straws, pipettes and their breath. During the day, children conducted their own investigation - by dropping “meteorites” onto a surface like

the moon, they could see how craters of different sizes could be formed. And a clear evening and the appearance of Venus in the sky allowed them to put their new-found passion for space into practice. “I actually saw a planet,” said one excited pupil. l St John’s welcomes many volunteers who enrich children’s school life, some by listening to them read, others by helping

with arts and crafts or cooking, or running a club after school. The school is also looking for governors, whose role is to support and challenge the headteacher and ensure that children are encouraged to succeed in all areas of education. If you would like to volunteer at this friendly, vibrant school, please contact the school or email enquiries@ stjohnskeynsham.co.uk

ast month, the Prime Minister wrote to the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, following a formal request from her office to Downing Street asking for a second referendum on Scottish independence. In 2014, a referendum took place asking Scots whether they would like to remain part of the United Kingdom (UK). On September 19, the result revealed that 55 per cent of those eligible to vote chose to stay in the UK, leaving the chief counting officer to state: "It is clear that the majority of people voting have voted ‘No’ to the referendum question." The referendum in 2014 was supposed to be a “once in a generation” vote, and the Scottish people voted decisively to keep the United Kingdom just that – united. This was even ratified under the Edinburgh Agreement by both the Scottish and UK Governments committed to maintaining unity. The result was democratic and akin to the referendum on leaving the European Union (EU) - the outcome cannot and should not be undermined. The Prime Minister is correct to point out to the First Minister that another independence referendum would ‘continue the political stagnation that Scotland has seen for the last decade’. Schools, hospitals and jobs have been ‘left behind’ owing to certain politicians’ unending desire to separate Scotland from the UK. This is wrong and unfair. It is in the both the UK’s and Scotland’s interest for it to remain united, especially as we enter into the withdrawal process from the EU with only prosperity and opportunity ahead of us. It is not just about historical ties. The UK is one country and better off for it.

Join the world day of prayer

PEOPLE in Keynsham are invited to take part in this year’s World Day of Prayer. The international inter-church event in March involves a service prepared by women of a different country each year. This year’s day of prayer is being prepared by the women of Zimbabwe with the theme of “Rise, take up your mat and walk”, for which people of all ages will be encouraged to act in pursuit of peace and reconciliation. The event will begin in Samoa. Prayer in native languages will then travel throughout the world, finishing in American Samoa more than 36 hours later. In Keynsham, the service rotates between the churches in the High Street, and this year it will be in Keynsham Baptist Church at 2pm on Friday March 6. Everyone is welcome - women, men and children of all faiths and none. There will be refreshments after the service.

n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

Championship swimmers' great start KEYNSHAM Amateur Swimming Club got off to a flying start at the Somerset ASA County Championships 2020, winning plenty of medals on the opening day of competition. Club athletes swam in both individual and team relay events on January 19. It’s a huge achievement for the young swimmers to qualify for the championships in the first place. To so, they had to compete at many open meets across the region from January to December to gain the required qualifying time for their age group. The hard work these youngsters put in should not be underestimated - they train for anything from seven to 22 hours per week, with next to no time off for Christmas, and a very short summer break. Day one was held at Millfield School Swimming Pool in Street. The schedule was made up of team relays and 100m individual medleys. Laura B (11), Jess L (14) and Georgia G (16) all qualified in their heat to go through to their respective age group final of the 100m individual medley. Both Jess and Georgia went on to win silver medals and Laura won a bronze medal. Keynsham put out a number of relay teams, with swimmers aged 11-21 competing for them. The 10-12-year-old girls’ team won bronze in the 200m medley. Team members Daisy O (backstroke), Lilly B (breaststroke), Laura B (butterfly) and Seanna E (freestyle) put in a fantastic performance to win third place. They also finished in 5th place in the 200m freestyle later in the day. The 13-14-year-old girls (Lehana E, Jess L, Izzy N and Liv J) also won bronze medals in their 200m freestyle. Our senior swimmers were also in medalwinning positions, with the mixed 200m freestyle team of Jasper Lye, Ella R, Zach Derrick and Georgia G coming in third. Jasper and Zach later teamed up with Sam Lawton and Sam M to won bronze in the boys 200m Medley. Zach, Jasper and Sam M coach our regional potential swimmers. “It’s so inspirational for the younger swimmers to see their coaches compete, which is why Zach, Jasper and Sam are such valuable members of Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club,” said Tanya Oliver, KASC team manager. “I believe it’s important for the swimmers to know that their coaches understand and enjoy competitive swimming themselves.” The counties run every weekend from January 19 until February 9. In the next issue of Keynsham Voice, we’ll update you on the full results from the championships. n With the Tokyo Olympics coming up this year, swimming, along with other sports, will see an increased uptake amongst children. n BACK TO NATURE

How we can act to safeguard future of with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

T

he first AWT Keynsham group meeting of the decade was entitled “A Wilder Future for Avon”, and provoked an unprecedented level of thought and discussion, writes chairman Dave Sage. The joint speakers couldn’t have been more appropriate: Ian Barrett, chief executive of Avon Wildlife Trust, and Amy Coulthard, trust director of conservation. Ian spoke first, painting a depressing picture of high levels of biodiversity loss over the last 50 years, globally, nationally and locally. For example, in the last 40-50 years, the UK has lost 95% of its hedgehogs, 80% of its hares and huge numbers of nesting birds. In the “Avon” area, we have lost 96% of our starlings and 96% of our swifts. He discussed the reasons for these catastrophic declines: a huge decrease in insect populations, which form the basis of many food chains, particularly for birds; human population increase; farming, hunting and other land uses which restrict wildlife populations; pollution, particularly of freshwater with agricultural run-off of fertilisers, slurry and pesticides; climate change; and the introduction of invasive species such as mink, signal crayfish, Japanese knotweed and rhododendrons. Ian explained the need for a big increase in the range of habitats available for wildlife, through a variety of means including de-intensification of farming and a return to more traditional practices. In the past, Britain was home to wild aurochs (a type of cow), wild boar, ponies, beavers, bears and wolves, all of which shaped the landscape and prevented succession of vegetation to

a climax community of mixed deciduous woodland. The loss of these animals, together with intensive farming and excess application of pesticides throughout the mid to late 20th century, has considerably reduced the diversity of habitats, so it is no surprise much of our wildlife has vanished. Indeed, there is evidence that we could be heading for the sixth major global extinction event. This loss has serious implications for human wellbeing. For example, three-quarters of our

food is pollinated by insects. In some parts of China, the situation is so bad that pear trees have to be laboriously pollinated by hand. Amy followed up with some good news. She outlined some initiatives which are already starting to bring benefits and reverse the downward trend. The Nature Recovery Network proposed by the Wildlife Trusts is heavily involved in habitat conservation and restoration, in showing that more wildlife-friendly farming need not be at the expense of crop yields and profits - the two

our wildlife and our planet

are not mutually exclusive. Hence, there needs to be robust government legislation to reward those that adopt these practices, and fine heavily those who continue to overuse pesticides and artificial fertilisers. We also need to continue to “green up” our towns and cities, and greatly increase the engagement of people with wildlife. Even the smallest of gardens can be developed to encourage more wildlife to visit. Species expansions and re-introductions are now becoming more commonplace - otters and red kites are increasing dramatically, and beavers, pine martens (most recently reintroduced into the Forest of Dean), cranes, ospreys and white-tailed eagles are all on the verge of making comebacks in some parts of the country. These will be greatly enhanced if we can join up fragmented areas of wildlife habitats by establishing “corridors” along which animals can move and disperse. Ian and Amy summed up the inspiring evening by repeating what Mark Carwardine had emphasised at his talk in November: the key to halting species extinction and climate emergencies is robust government legislation. They urged us to take action at home, to take action in the local community and above all to write to our local MPs to highlight just how vital the next 10-20 years are in shaping the future of our planet. For more information on the Nature Recovery Network, check out https://www.wildlifetrusts. org/nature-recovery-network n Our next event is on Friday February 14, with a talk by Rob Acton-Campbell about Troopers Hill, a fine example of an urban local nature reserve, an important green space in the heart of Bristol now in its 25th year, and working to achieve many of the aims of the trust. The events runs from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, with doors open at 7pm, at the Baptist Church Hall, High Street, Keynsham, BS31 1DS. All are welcome - adults £2.50, under-16s £1. eaders from across 1st Keynsham Scouts headed to Scout HQ for an annual gettogether of training activities and an awards ceremony. There were some bleary eyes on the frosty Sunday morning, but the waft of coffee and bacon ensured a good turnout. There are more than 80 volunteer leaders who make up 1st Keynsham Scouts, from all ages and backgrounds – doing everything from making the teas, running wide games and leading activities such as caving. The day provided the opportunity of putting faces to names, as well as refreshing knowledge and skills, and collaborating on new ideas for each age group – and the end of January was the ideal time to gather everyone to share news for the upcoming year. The gathering also gave a glimpse of what might be ahead for Scouting in Keynsham,

Honoured - pictured left to right are Paul Benn, Ken Hunter, Neal Harris, Becky Harris and Will Harris including making the most of the Chelwood campsite and how to make Scouting more sustainable and environmentally friendly. It was also a day to show appreciation to everyone who helps deliver Scouting to young people in Keynsham. A total of 25 people were awarded Good Service Awards in recognition of their contribution - such as Neal Harris and Jackie

Mackenzie (Award for Merit for at least 10 years of outstanding service) and John Balcombe (Bar to the Award for Merit for 15 years of outstanding service). Two particular leaders, Angela Sheppard and Dave Lloyd, were also awarded the Silver Acorn for 20 years of distinguished service – one of the highest-level awards in Scouting. They will therefore be invited to a special parade and

service at Windsor Castle in April by gift of Her Majesty the Queen. We look forward to catching up with them then. n Ever thought about volunteering? There are plenty of roles to get stuck into across the troops, as well as roles behind the scenes. If you have a specific skill or hobby you’d like to share, then perhaps one of the activity teams is right for you - there’s everything from climbing, crafting and caving to watersports. n After the success of November’s clay pigeon shoot, another weekend will be held on March 28-29. Spaces are already filling up, so email claypigeon@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk to book your places. n Every volunteer has a unique skillset that makes them brilliant. Discover yours at 1st Keynsham Scouts. Contact scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk or ring 07714 237525 to lend a hand.

n NEWS Chance to try out new craft FANCY learning a new skill? If so, why not try the art and craft workshops being held by the Cam Valley Arts Trail Group at Timsbury. On Saturday February 29, the group will run a day of workshops at the Conygre Hall. Workshops will cover calligraphy for beginners, lino cutting and printing,

botanical ceramics, willow dragonflies, acrylic painting, and an introduction to silver jewellery. BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Riders Jilly Cooper The BBC is highlighting The 100 Novels That Shaped Our World, and February’s theme is Love and Romance. One of the novels highlighted is Riders by Jilly Cooper. I read this during my summer holidays and it was a great, fun read. It is the first book starring Jilly Cooper’s intriguing and flawed hero Rupert CampbellBlack and follows his showjumping career and his rivalry with Jake Lovell. Their feud follows the competitions around Europe and leads finally to the Los Angeles Olympics. Jilly Cooper researches her stories with great detail, so you are immersed in the world of horses and showjumping. Be warned once started, I can guarantee you will be unable to put this book down.

Murder at the Lighthouse Frances Evesham reviewed by Hilary Cox, Library Assistant, Midsomer Norton Library “Cosy crime, murder mysteries, clever animals and cake - come to Exham-on-Sea, a seaside town in Somerset.” Although a murder takes place, this is still a charming and comfy story. It bowls along the lanes and streets of a sleepy Somerset

village, with a colourful parade of characters. Although I found them a slight distraction, as they’d remind me of my own neighbours or acquaintances, they all rubbed along and contributed to the tale. I enjoyed the setting, in rural Somerset, with the sandy beaches, rolling hills and open farmland. It was slightly odd to have familiar place names woven into the storytelling, but that was also its charm. A book full of whimsy, cakes, borrowed dogs, and an almost incidental murder, it is driven with a light, entertaining touch. It certainly lives up to its genre of Cosy Crime and is pleasingly delightful. Adult Non Fiction

Without the Calories: Slow Cooker Justine Pattison A great recipe book that encompasses a low calorie count as well as using a slow cooker. Many recipes for a slow cooker can use quite “heavy” ingredients, but here the author has been very versatile with the ingredients and has created recipes that are full of flavour. I found the book very easy to use, with great pictures, and you do not need to buy additional expensive ingredients. The recipes range from meat – a chunky beef chilli and a very tasty chicken Balti - to non-meat options and finally sweet things. There is

a recipe to cook a light farmhouse cake in a slow cooker. I know this sounds unusual but I did try it with some degree of success! A book with cheats and great ideas for super-easy meals.

Watership Down Richard Adams reviewed by Erin Conlon, one of our younger reviewers

How to Grow a Baby and Push it Out Clemmie Hooper reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant Clemmie Hooper is the wife of the Instagram hit dad “Father of daughters” and as a midwife wrote a guide book for mothers-to-be. I appreciated it because it was honest and direct, speaking of subjects some other guides might avoid, or speak of in a naïve way. When I ask mothers their opinion on sensitive subjects, I usually get the answer "honey, you don’t want to know." But when it comes to my body, I would prefer to know, get ready as much as I can prior to this big, crazy thing which is to give birth. I strongly recommend this guide if you’re ready to hear the truth and get prepared!

Watership Down is the emotive tale of a colony of rabbits forced to flee their warren. It follows the story of their journey, fraught with the impalpable air of danger. However, more foreboding than the traumatic journey is the difficulty of finding and digging a new home, and the task of finding more rabbits to fill it. An outstanding tale of determination, loyalty, friendship and territorial rivalry. A classic everyone will enjoy. Triple treat of local derbies on the

Matt Long gets Keynsham ’s second goal during the six-goal thriller with Bridport FEBRUARY will be an exciting month for Keynsham Town fans as they look forward to three local derbies. Only one is at home, to Bitton, but the other two are within a couple of miles of the AJN Stadium, against Cadbury Heath and Brislington. The Ks defeated Cadbury Heath 3-1 in December, coming back from 1-0 down thanks to an Adey Harvey double and another from Jordan Anstey. With Keynsham 2-1 up at half-time and needing the three points to avoid being sucked into a relegation place, the fog which had been drifting around the ground all evening descended and put the game in jeopardy. Luckily referee Craig Scriven allowed an extended interval for it to clear, which it obligingly did, and the home fans saw the three points secured. Later in the month Keynsham faced the then leaders of the Premier Division, Bradford Town, little expecting the day to bring much reward. However, the Ks’ best performance of the season saw them victorious. Again, coming from behind, Matt Brown supplied the equaliser and Craig Wilson a double to send the near 100 away supporters back to Wiltshire thinking that three easy points to maintain their title challenge had been thrown away. Keynsham faced two more

Match photos: Pete Ricketts

Goalkeeper Ash Clark and Keynsham’s No 4 Mike Grist defend against a Bridport attack high-flying teams early in 2020. They travelled to Devon to face Tavistock, only going down to the odd goal in three, then four days later faced Plymouth Parkway at home. Plymouth’s recent run of form has seen them overtake Bradford Town at the top of the table and also advance into the last 16 of the Buildbase FA Vase. On the night, Plymouth were clearly the best team to have visited the AJN Stadium this season, but Keynsham were not overwhelmed and only slipped to a 3-0 defeat. On January 18, Bridport were the visitors and an exciting game saw six goals scored. The Ks went 2-0 up before half-time thanks to goals from Matt Brown and Matt Long but were stunned when the Dorset club brought the scores level

midway through the second period. Some astute substitutions by manager John Allen re-invigorated his team and two more goals from the two Matts led to a well-deserved victory, 4-2. Apart from visiting Cadbury Heath in February, Keynsham welcome local rivals Bitton to the AJN on the 15th. Bitton’s league form has been disappointing this season, but they, like Plymouth Parkway, have progressed to the last 16 of the FA Vase. Another short journey up the A4 will see Keynsham meet Brislington, hoping to avenge the slender 1-0 defeat they suffered at their hands at the start of the season. A month with four away

Welcome back, Barts! Ace striker rejoins club PROLIFIC striker Kerry Bartlett has re-signed for Keynsham Town LFC. She has returned after a brief spell at Cheltenham Town, where she scored ten times in eight games. Kerry was Keynsham’s all-time top scorer last season, with 63 goals, helping the club to win promotion to tier three of the pyramid, the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division. Kerry said: “It feels great to be back. I know it won’t be easy in the Premier, but I’m looking forward to the challenge and playing with this group of girls again.” Keynsham manager Barrie Newton said: “Barts coming back is the best news we have had all season. We have found the step-up to the Premier a big one, but we are determined to retain our status and our main problem has been scoring goals. “We will now have a proven goal scorer up front, which will make so much difference. All the players were excited by the news and it has given everyone a boost, as so many of them know exactly how Kerry wants the ball. It will be great to watch the Lorton-Bartlett interplay again. They were almost telepathic last season.”

n KEYNSHAM RUGBY CLUB

Weaver makes amends with last-gasp IT was a dismal day with a sodden pitch, and Keynsham travelled to Newent on December 21 with a much understrength side, as evinced by the fact that veteran prop forwards were starters and coach Matt Dew was called into action from the subs’ bench. The home side looked like overpowering Keynsham in the first 20 minutes, but the defence restricted Newent to one unconverted try. Newent then missed opportunities by opting to tapand-go penalties with kickable penalties offered. Then two penalties from Keynsham’s Dean Weaver saw Keynsham finish the half a point clear at 5-6. In the second half, Keynsham’s self-belief grew. A head injury to Kieran Etheridge saw Ryan Harding switch to front row from the second row and the aforementioned Dew crawled into the second row. Newent retook the lead from a penalty, then Weaver replied to make it 8-9. Keynsham got the chance to seal the game with a penalty in front of the posts, but Weaver made a hash of it. But at the last gasp, Weaver made up for this miss by slotting a beauty from near the touchline. Phew! 12-8 and 4 league points. n Both sides came out of the trap firing on all cylinders when Keynsham travelled to Newton Abbott on January 4. Early-doors the ‘All Whites’ were penalised at a ruck and Sam Challenger kicked over from 10 metres.

Keynsham in action against Newport (above, below and opposite) during a closely fought encounter The home side were straight back on the attack. In or around Keynsham’s 22 they opted to go for the corner rather than a shot at goal. The defence yielded another penalty, with the same result, but the defence held and when offered a third penalty they went for goal and equalised through their centre, Sweeney. Keynsham bounced back when a cross kick to Marlon Dorset led to fly half Dean Weaver

touching down in the corner - the conversion failed. After 25 minutes, Sweeney made it 6-8 with a penalty. Five minutes later, stand-off Allen touched down for an unconverted try. No8 Mackin added a second try to make it 16-8. Then Matt Carr struck back with the try he deserved to leave just 3 points in it at the end of an exciting half. A knock-on from the kick-off was a sign of things to come. Five minutes in, still under pressure

from the first error, another converted penalty made it 19-13. Then Joe Clements barged his way over for a try - 19-18. Bryden Tanner replaced Dean Bodman at this stage. Probably the decisive point in the game came in the 15th minute when the home side’s winger, Davey, intercepted on the halfway line and just had the legs to get across the whitewash for a converted try. Ten minutes later, another converted try opened

winner for the Ks up a 15-point gap - scorer Allen, conversion Sweeney. A second try by Matt Carr gave the visitors brief hope at 33-23 but despite another jinking run by Carr that was the end of the scoring. This win was the first of the season for Newton Abbott and they deserved it. A try bonus was just about what we were worth on the day. n Keynsham hosted North Petherton on January 11. A forced reshuffle meant veterans Bodman and Tanner continued in the front row, a new back row formation was in place, and the backs were switched about. We went 5 points down when the Petherton left wing chipped through for a try by the right wing. After 28 minutes gone, more rubbish tackling allowed swift transferral of the ball to the right winger to touch down for his second try. Five minutes before half time Bodman yielded to Darren Uren in the front row and on the whistle, Dorset was yellowcarded for an alleged deliberate knock-on. At half time the score was just 15-0 - it could well have been double that, as the visitors had enjoyed over 80 per cent possession and territory. Within a minute of the re-start Peterton were 3 more points ahead from a penalty. A brief spark from the Ks saw bursts by Joe Clements, Matt Carr and Cieran Chester bring a chance of a try to Carr, which he gratefully accepted. But a try by the visitors’ other winger, converted, opened up an 18-point gap. To shake things up, Bodman returned for Tanner and Joe Concannon came on for Josh Clayfield. Keynsham scored a second try from a blind-side move at a line-out, Josh Woodman the scorer. A contratemp between two wingers saw Carr and his opposite number side-lined for 10 minutes. The substitute visitors’ hooker scored their final try. Final score 10-30 - an absolute disaster for Keynsham. n Keynsham’s visit to Sidmouth on January 18 was a cracker - two evenly matched sides going hammer and tongs at each other. After 8 minutes,

loose play saw the ball break to Sidmouth scrum half Cameron Grainger, who slipped it to the supporting full back Sam Meadham to score; unconverted. Eight minutes later, a pass from Ks centre Ollie Conybeare split the defence and left-wing Matt Carr sprinted in from 25 metres to dive over for a try at the corner (unconverted) to make it 5-5. On 20 minutes the visitors edged in front with a penalty from Sam Challenger. This was equalised by a penalty by Dan Retter, the home stand-off. On the 30-minute mark, Chiefs wing-forward Rabbie Hansford squeezed over for another un-converted try. Five minutes from half-time, a Keysham scrum drove Sidmouth fully 10 metres before they were awarded a penalty, converted by Challenger. Keynsham’s mistakes, mainly un-forced, had led to all the home side's points - 13-11. The second half started with Briden Tanner taking over at prop for Phil Harvey. After 17 minutes, a break by the home centre from a retreating scrum saw Grainger in support and he shot through from 20-plus metres for Sidmouth’s third try, converted by Retter. A yellow card followed for a home side player and Keynsham capitalised in the 21st minute - a catch and drive from a line-out 15 metres out saw winger Rob Breckon join the maul, secure the ball and get driven over for a try, converted by Challenger. Now the score was 20-18 and Harvey returned to replace Ryan Harding and Joe Clements for Jack Josham. A Rutter penalty stretched the lead to 5 points and Dan Moody replaced Conybeare in the centre. A great last-minute tackle by Cieran Chester saved a Chiefs’ try but with 8 minutes left Rutter missed a penalty opportunity. From here it was all Keynsham. A break, kick and chase by Breckon put the Ks well into the home 22, but despite several penalties and scrums in the `red zone` the visitors were unable to get the equalising score. Truly superb defence by Sidmouth saved the day for a really tight win.

n KEYNSHAM BOWLS CLUB

Oh, what a night for players! THE Christmas lights had been put in place and the tree erected in the clubhouse to welcome members of Keynsham Bowls Club to their Christmas party. Everybody was in their best attire, many wearing Christmas hats, to listen and in some cases dance to the music of The Two of Clubs duo. During the interval, the 70 members present enjoyed turkey and mince pies, washed down with mulled wine, all of which was prepared by the club’s social

committee. Our picture shows some of the ladies letting their hair down whilst The Two of Clubs were playing, having been invited back following their successful evening the previous year. As we sang along to such songs as the Four Seasons hit December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night), the message was still appropriate some 56 years later. Everyone left looking forward to Christmas 2020, when again they will be entertained by The Two of Clubs.
