Speaking to the Voice about his memories of playing against eight-year old Judd, Richard said: “As a 12 year-old, I had been interested in snooker for a couple of years, and my father used to take me to a snooker club where we lived in Oxfordshire. I played in the junior team, and I was always deemed as the young one, but once I got to a sufficient level I started to play in tournaments. Turn to Page 5

Lib Dems sweep to power in B&NES THE Liberal Democrats have taken control of Bath & North East Somerset after a strong showing in the local elections. Thirty seven of the 59 councillors are Lib Dems. Among them are Duncan Hounsell and Alastair Singleton, who won the two Saltford seats, and Andy Wait and Hal MacFie, who were victorious in the Keynsham East ward. Keynsham North and South each returned two Conservative councillors: Brian Simmons and Victor Clarke, and Alan Hale and Lisa O’Brien. The new leader of the council is Dine Romero and there are nine cabinet members, including, for the first time in the council’s history, two job-share roles, one of which will focus on climate emergency and the other on transport. Councillor Romero said: "We are ambitious for our area and have some big tasks ahead particularly addressing the climate emergency and have already created a dedicated cabinet role to champion this vital concern. All our cabinet members are committed to opening up the council and making sure people’s voices are heard about issues that really matter locally." Cabinet meetings and full council meetings are always webcast.

Little girls with big ideas to help others Amari, 6, creates plastic party box A MUM and daughter from Keynsham have launched a scheme for people to borrow plastic items for parties. Zaya Morris-Taylor and her six-yearold daughter Amari decided to create ‘The Plastic Party Box’ after reading a BBC News article about a similar idea in South Wales. Amari, who is a pupil at Chandag Infant School, was responsible for naming the project and also creating a flyer to promote it. The duo raised over £100 on their JustGiving page to buy all the contents for the box, which they hope will try to reduce the amount of single use plastic people need to buy for parties and events. Zaya said: “We have over 50 plates, bowls, cups, cutlery sets, two thick vinyl table cloths and various other serving accessories. It is free to borrow the party box, but if people want to leave a donation on returning the box all money donated will be going to the charity my daughter chose - The Marine Conservation Society, who do lots of work to protect our coast lines.”

Zaya and Amari are helping make parties kinder to the planet

A local resident who borrowed the box in May said: “Using The Plastic Party Box was really easy and it had everything we needed inside. The plates and cups are colourful and in a brilliant condition. It was great to host a party for my child’s birthday where there was very little waste to throw away at the end. “It also inspired me to make the whole party

more environmentally friendly. Almost all waste (food, crisp packets, etc) was separated and recycled. I will definitely use the party box again and highly recommend it. • If you are interested in borrowing the box for your event, email takenoticebathbristol@ gmail.com or visit the Take Notice BristolBANES Facebook page.

Birthday Belle, 7, lays on a spread BELLE Davies had her birthday party with her friends and decided she didn’t want to have presents for herself this year and so chose an act of kindness, inspired by talks at her school, St John's C of E Primary. She asked her friends to bring food donations for the Keynsham Food Bank. She collected a mighty haul and hopes this will help other families in Keynsham. Belle feels very proud of her collection.

'Holiday park' concerns for Green Belt SALTFORD Environment Group has expressed concerns over two planning applications which members claim could create an Airb'n'b-style holiday park. The group, which has more than 500 members, has lodged objections to Clive Franklin’s application for a Certificate of Lawfulness of Existing Use at Avon Farm in Avon Lane. As part of the application, it has been requested that two properties The Dove Cote and The Garden Room – can be used as separate dwellings. The group say the plans show a disregard for planning law as it affects Saltford's Green Belt, and are a matter for concern. Within the group’s objection letter to Martin Almond, senior planning and enforcement officer at B&NES Council, SEG chairman Phil Harding wrote: “This is a highly inappropriate development in the Green Belt outside Saltford's housing boundary. Such a development

in a sensitive and hitherto quiet area of Saltford's Green Belt that is served by a narrow singletrack country lane used by cyclists entering and leaving the popular Bristol-Bath Sustrans cycle path and walkers including young families, sets an unwelcome precedent that is contrary to the provisions for protecting the Green Belt.” The group also disputes the application’s claims that The Dove Cote has been in continuous occupation as a selfcontained dwelling for four or more years. Mr Harding's letter continues: “SEG is aware that following the submission of alleged planning contravention evidence by Saltford residents and your own investigations, this is not the case … this building was in use until at least May 2016 as an office in association with Cash4Cars; there was no planning permission granted for that use.”

Commenting on the application for The Garden Room, Mr Harding said the group also disputes the application’s supporting document claims that the property has been in continuous occupation as a self-contained dwelling since 2013. He wrote: “Whilst it is difficult to prove the validity or otherwise of the claim of continual domestic use, what is of relevance is whether there has been a deliberate concealment of this change of use since 2013. “When B&NES Council visited the site in 2016 to investigate the change of use to offices of The Dove Cote, it is pertinent to question whether the use as a domestic dwelling of The Garden Room was concealed from the officer during that visit.” Objections to the plans have also been lodged by Saltford Parish Council. In an email to planners, parish clerk Lottie

Smith-Collins stated that the council “does not support inappropriate development of this nature in the Green Belt outside Saltford’s housing boundary. Such a development in a sensitive area of Saltford’s Green Belt that is served by a narrow single track country lane regularly used by cyclists entering and leaving the popular Bristol-Bath Sustrans cycle path and walkers including young families sets an unwelcome precedent that is contrary to the provisions for protecting the Green Belt in Chapter 13 of NPPF (2018).” The planning reference number for The Dove Cote is 19/01731/CLEU and The Garden Room is 19/01732/ CLEU. The deadline for receiving comments on both applications was Wednesday May 15, and at the time of writing both were still pending consideration, with a target decision date of Wednesday June 12.

Keynsham to the Crucible... From Page 1. “On one occasion we travelled to Keynsham Snooker Club in Bristol, where I progressed to the second round of a handicap tournament for younger players. I had mainly played against people older than me, and although there were a few youngsters on the circuit, I had only heard of Judd at this point. I couldn’t believe it when he told me his handicap – he even had to give me 20 point start! I broke first, and essentially he ended up winning 2-0. “I remember that he was tiny, and that he couldn’t get his arm over the top of the cue, which is quite an unorthodox style. After seeing Judd play it was quite clear that I had a lot of work to do in order to get to a similar level, especially when we found out that he was practising almost full time!” Following his 2-0 defeat, Richard’s father Neil, who is an expert horse racing analyst, called a friend that worked at Coral, and placed a £10 bet with 1000-1 odds that Judd would win the world title by the age of 30.

Since then Neil and Richard, who now works as a cyber insurance broker for Lloyds of London, have continued to follow Judd’s career over the years, and Neil came very close to cashing in his bet when Judd reached the final in 2011. Richard said: “We have followed Judd’s career from the start, and were really excited when he reached the final in 2011, and two subsequent semi finals, before finally winning it. I’m definitely not surprised at the success he’s had – I used to play football at decent level with people who have been scouted professionally, but in comparison to this I’ve never seen anything like it.” Richard told the Voice he expects his father will use his winnings to take his wife on holiday, and pursue his love of racing by potentially buying more horses. “For us it’s not an anticlimax”, Richard added. “We’re glad he’s won and have enjoyed watching his progress over the years, and although it’s over now it has come to a happy end. I am still a big snooker fan, and I would love to go and watch Judd play at the Crucible one day!”

Judd Trump, 29, won the title in time for Neil Morrice to claim £10,000 on a winning bet

Beware allergies

NOW that spring is here we all look forward to lots of time outdoors and so do our beloved four legged family members. Spring brings warmth and sunshine but also brings many things that can cause allergies in both humans and pets. People with allergies usually have watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing. However, pets with allergies instead have red and itchy skin, hair loss, or recurring skin or ear infections. Fleas are the most common allergy causing culprit in pets. For the flea allergic patient, 100% flea control is essential. Luckily we have several excellent products available that can protect our pets from these pesky parasites year round. If you do experience a flea issue, treating the environment is very important to breaking the life cycle of the flea. The next most common allergies are to pollens and moulds, called atopy. Thanks to very effective drugs like oclacitinib and cyclosporine we are able to keep our allergic pets much more comfortable with fewer side effects than in the past. Working closely with your vet is key to determine which medications and treatments will work best. Finally we need to touch on food allergy. Some pets become sensitive to certain food ingredients. Proteins are much more likely than grains to cause allergies. The only method of diagnosing a food allergy is by using a carefully selected prescription hypoallergenic diet for several weeks. Many over the counter foods have been shown to have proteins not listed in the ingredients, so it is important to use a diet recommended by your vet. Unfortunately, allergies are usually a life-long problem. Our goal as vets is to manage allergies and improve the quality of life for both you and your pet in a way that fits into your lifestyle and budget.

Ukulele concert aids air ambulance A UKULELE covers band went down a storm when they held a charity concert at Oldland Village Club. Musicians from Oldland Ukers raised £520 for the Great Western Air Ambulance, the club's nominated charity of the year. Band member Naomi Willmott said: “About a year and a half ago ago four of us met on a night out at Oldland Village Club. A couple were playing ukuleles and we got chatting and singing and thought how nice it would be to form our own band. “Since then we have grown to nine and perform at many care homes, putting smiles on residents' faces as well as performing at events for St

Peter's Hospice, Southmead Hospital, Meningitis Now, Dementia UK and many more charities.” Naomi said the £520 had helped bring the club's total so far for GWAA to £5,000. “Everyone enjoyed the evening and everyone was up dancing. We have members in our group who are in their 60s, 70s and 80s, proving you are never to old to play an instrument!” The Oldland Ukers meet to rehearse every Monday night at Oldland Village Club at 8.30pm and welcome new members. You can follow where they perform on Facebook, search for Oldland Ukers.

IGHTER nights and longer days, here comes the summer. What does that mean for us? Crime statistics tell us that burglaries increase at this time of year. Open windows and doors give opportunist thefts the change to target vulnerable addresses. A few basic things can make your home less likely to be targeted. Some of it seems obvious: windows. Now I’m not suggesting keeping all your windows closed all the time but when you leave your property just think about which windows you close. Don’t leave ground floor windows open, and windows about a flat roof. With a bit of effort an intruder can scale a flat roof and be in

through even the smallest of windows in seconds. Most crime prevention is about minimising risk; we do it all the time in normal life but we get complacent when it comes to our home, which for most people holds the most valuable items whether that’s sentimental or monetary. Close doors, set alarms it’s the small steps that reduce crime. Our burglary rate in Keynsham and the surrounding areas is very low and I’d like to keep it that way. Nuisance motorcycles have been causing anti-social behaviour around Keynsham. We have been actively targeting these offenders. We have stopped and seized bikes that will now be destroyed. We

need more information on the riders of these bikes so if you have any information that could assist us please pass it on either via the neighbourhood pages or the Avon and Somerset website. We have been continuing to deal with other vehicles being driven in an anti-social manner, issuing the drivers with official warnings, and we will continue to do this. Avon and Somerset police have decide that we need an effective visible presence on social media. Due to this I now have an official Facebook profile for the office which we will be using to monitor and interact with the local community pages. We are doing

this because this is where rumours and whispers seem to take hold and distort the truth very quickly. If we have information to provide or clarify then we will be doing this. This will not be monitored 24/7, the profile will be used to publicise events and meetings that we will be attending and give people a connection to the local team. This is not a way to report crime but can be used to communicate or book appointments with us. The Keynsham Music Festival is fast approaching and we will be present, so come along and chat with the team if you see us out and about. This week I have been supported by the local community in arresting a male wanted on warrant where the information that was provided to me, that led to us forcing entry to a property and detaining a male. Oldest councillor in B&NES bows out after 32 years

Bryan Organ

FORMER Bath and North East Somerset Council Councillor Bryan Organ has finally retired from local government. Bryan, a former chairman of Wansdyke District Council and one of the early chairmen of B&NES, decided that after 32 years he would not seek re-election . Bryan, who will be 90 next year, felt that another four- year term, if successful, would just not be practical. "Younger models are needed being the oldest Councillor in the whole of the B&NES area is nothing to be proud of," said Bryan, "but I have thoroughly enjoyed the cut and thrust of local politics."

Bryan, together with his partner David Davies, were well known traders in Keynsham for many years, before their furniture shop Organ & Davies on the corner of Charlton Road – where the HSBC Bank is currently located – caught fire in 1978 (see cutting above, from a paper that predates Keynsham Voice.) Bryan, a former president of the Chamber of Commerce and Trade, has always been involved in voluntary organisations, including president of Keynsham Lions Club. He continues to be actively working with the Keynsham Dial A Ride and has recently been elected as chairman of Keynsham Charities.

Hospice shop takes top prize

Surgery pilots shuttle bus

THE St Peter’s Hospice shop in Keynsham won the top prize in the charity's annual retail awards. The hospice’s 51 shops raised a total net profit of £2.6m in 2018/19, all of which goes directly towards patient and family care in Bristol and the surrounding areas. Criteria including lottery profits, Gift Aid contributions and ebay sales were calculated to crown Keynsham as Shop of the Year. The shop was managed by Keith Roberts until November 2018, and is now run by his former assistant Amanda Withey. Area manager Sue White said; “Both managers have contributed hugely to the shop’s achievement, but the success would not be possible without the tremendous support – and generous donations – of the people of Keynsham”

ELDERLY and disabled patients who struggle to visit Hanham Surgery can now get a helping hand. Hanham Health has teamed up with Kingswood Community Transport (KCT) to offer a 'Doctors' Shuttle' service. The service will be available from 9am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and can be booked directly with Kingswood Community Transport for £3 return. Mike Vernon, general manager for KCT, said: “The service is open to any patient at Hanham Surgery who could struggle to attend appointments without help. “This is a pilot and if all goes well, we will extend it to Oldland Common Surgery and then look to open it up any other surgeries wishing to take part in our area.”

n SPOTLIGHT ON SALTFORD

New parish council line-up ELEVEN people have been elected to serve on Saltford Parish Council for the next four years. The successful candidates at the election on May 2 were: Adrian Betts, Marie Carder, Will Feay, Jon Godfrey, Gary Graveling, Phil Harding, Duncan Hounsell, Adam Rees-Leonard, Rob Taylor, Sally Turner and Chris Warren. All councillors' contact details can be found on the SPC website and noticeboard. You can also follow the parish council on Facebook and Twitter. The council officially came into office on May 7 and it held its first meeting on May 17. At the meeting the council resolved to adopt the following policy overview: Saltford Parish Council is in favour of: • protecting the Green Belt around the village from development including from fracking and a road bypass (that would be infilled with housing); • reopening the railway station on the existing site; • Saltford should continue to be a caring community that encourages Fairtrade and looks after the environment while aiming for a lighter ecological footprint that is more climate friendly for the benefit of future generations.

Join a free walk THE council will run a free event on Tuesday June 11. The Parish Walk will be led by two knowledgeable walking guides. Walkers will depart and return to The Shallows car park via Kelston Village and Kelston Mills. During the walk the group will split into two, with the shorter walk remaining on reasonably level ground. The second more challenging walk, will continue up to Kelston Round Hill. The Parish Walk will set off from at 7pm. All welcome.

The North Avon Canoe Club joined forces with other canoe clubs on the River Avon to clean up its stretch of the river at Saltford. |The haul was mainly plastic and glass bottles, but members also fished out a large number of tennis balls, a tennis racket, a lemon, a full can of beer and a chilly's water bottle.

Village Festival features a programme to be proud of RESIDENTS and visitors are all set for nine days of fun this month at the Saltford Village Festival. The event features more than 80 activities and will showcase dozens of local organisations. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the photo and short story competitions. Various items will be on sale including the 2020 Saltford Calendar and raffle tickets. The open morning will include a cafe offering Newton Farm bacon rolls and home baked cakes. The final weekend sees Saltford’s first Food Festival on Saturday with stalls, cookery demonstrations by chef Michel and Newton Farm butcher Steve, food talks and the community café. This will be followed by the Saltford School Fair and then finishing off Saturday with a Caribbean Evening featuring local band Six Appeal. n KEYNSHAM TOWN COUNCIL

Keynsham declares climate emergency FOLLOWING the local authority elections on May 2, the newly elected Keynsham Town Council met for the first time at the Annual Town Council meeting on Tuesday May 14. The 14 Councillors, comprising a mix of six Liberal Democrats, three Labour and five Independents, have been elected for a fouryear term to serve the residents of Keynsham. (There is one vacancy for Keynsham South and this has now been advertised for any eligible applicants to apply to be co-opted at the June 18 council meeting). First order of business was to elect the new chairman, Cllr Andy Wait, and a new vicechairman, Cllr Dave Biddleston. On accepting his election, chairman Andy Wait addressed the council stating that he hoped that the council would be an inclusive council working for the benefit of the Town. He was keen for the council to be seen as a positive influence, working together as a single entity in a civilised and informal manner to best serve the community in all that the town council does. This sentiment was supported by the council subsequently agreeing to overturn

current practice and appoint councillors to committees based upon merit/skills/ enthusiasm rather than political affiliations. The council went on to consider a motion proposed by Cllr Biddleston that it should support the Climate Emergency declaration, amended to also oppose the expansion of Bristol Airport, that was approved by B&NES on March 14. Keynsham Town Council went one step further in declaring its own Climate Emergency, thereby signing up to the commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030. Cllr Biddleston commented: "I'm extremely pleased that the council chose to support the motion and I believe that we can be proud of Keynsham having taken such a national lead with organisations such as Keynsham Plastic ReAction. Now our council can act with clarity over a great deal of environmental issues and I look forward to new green initiatives coming soon." The previous town council has already approved a single use plastics policy and the new council is appointing a working party to audit/reduce the town council’s own activities

(working with Keynsham Wombles and Keynsham Plastic ReAaction) prior to setting up a wider community forum to help make Keynsham a plastic-free town. The council has also joined the parish councils airport association, who are very active in ensuring that the plans for expanding Bristol Airport are properly considered. The Town Council held a public meeting on the issue for Keynsham residents back in February. Cllr Wait concluded: "It's easy to pass a resolution that Keynsham Town Council supports the Climate Emergency Initiative, but in order to make any difference each individual in Keynsham needs to make small but significant changes to their lives in order for this resolution to have any meaning. Making eco bricks, using greener forms of transport or simply recycling better would all help". KEYNSHAM MEMORIES with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society Many readers will remember the outdoor displays of paintings put on by the Saltford Painting Club for their summer exhibitions in the 1970s and 1980s. These were held in the open space outside the Town Hall, with the pictures fixed to the railings. In the background, across Bath Hill, is the cooked Meat Shop in the premises now occupied by Studio 9 and to the right of this, the former Liberal Club Building, which housed the town’s library until the Town Hall complex was opened in 1965.

Mental health is Molly's new focus A SIXTH FORMER from Keynsham has continuing her charity work with an event in support of YoungMinds. Molly Hale, 17 , has a string of fundraising efforts to her credit and is a helper with a local Mencap group. Molly Hale said: "I wanted to run this event to raise funds for YoungMinds which is the UK's leading charity committed to the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people. Mental health, particularly in the young is such an issue at this time." "We are a small organisation trying to make a big difference and this event will truly help us to make an impact to the lives of young people and their families affected by mental health and emotional issues across the UK. "At YoungMinds we’re leading the fight for a future where all young minds are supported and empowered, whatever the challenges and we could not continue our work without the generosity of many individuals."

n NEWS KEYNSHAM is set to host part of the 2019 British Roller Derby Championship in June. Roller derby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport played on a track by two teams on ‘quad’ roller skates and is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. It combines the physicality of rugby, the grace of roller sports, and the tactical complexity of American Football. Matches will take place on Saturday June 15 at the Wellsway Sports Centre. The Bristol Roller Derby (BRD) All Star will take on Oxford Men’s Roller Derby, and the Lincolnshire Thugly Ducklings will also take on the Crash Test Brummies. Doors open at 1pm and the first game starts at 1.30pm. Bristol Roller Derby was formed in March 2010 and is a not-for-profit organisation run by members for members on a voluntary basis. It is a roller derby league consisting of several teams and a group of officials, and BRD All Star are the topranked co-ed team in Europe, according to flat track statistics. Speaking on behalf of BRD, Sarah Watson said: “Whether you like roller skating, exciting sports, or just want to do something different, come on down and support your local team - we promise you won’t leave disappointed. Roller derby is a high-octane sport that’s great for all the family to watch! “If you fancy giving it a try yourself, drop BRD an email, pop along to their drop-in sessions at Merchants Academy in

talented all-round sportsman, representing the school in a variety of sports, as well as being involved in numerous leadership activities, acting as an exceptional role model to younger pupils. Colin Arblaster, junior chairman at the club, nominated Ben for the award. Colin referred to Ben as a talented all round cricketer who represents Somerset at Under 17 level. He first represented the club’s first XI as a 14-year-old, is now a regular first XI player, and leads the bowling line up, producing many a fine, fierce opening spell. At the presentation, Louise Riddoch from Keynsham & Saltford Sports Network highlighted the criteria for the award and recognised the similarities between Jack’s and

Ben’s qualities. Jack’s dad Dave Boulton then presented Ben with the trophy to huge applause from the coaches, players and their families. Following the presentation, Ben acknowledged the huge amount of fundraising that Dave, his wife June and the family have done for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) over the 10 years since Jack’s death. Huge numbers of young people in the community have engaged in the cardiac screening programme that has been funded by CRY and ensures that these young people are protected against undiagnosed heart conditions. As a result of June and Dave’s fundraising activities, another screening programme will be taking place this year at Wellsway School in July.

HANHAM Woods Academy maintained their 100 per cent unbeaten record to take home the Woodcock Shield. The Year 10 team saw off competition from Bristol Free School with a 2-0 win at Bristol City's Ashton Gate stadium. The first goal came early on courtesy of Drew Thomas, with number two coming when striker Jack Allen, who came on 20 minutes before the final whistle, hit the net. Drew told the Voice that he was following in his dad Spencer's footsteps who was in the winning team when Hanham High School lifted the Woodcock Shield in 1989. He said: “It's always been a dream to play at Ashton Gate. It was an unbelievable experience for me and the rest of the team who all played so brilliantly.” Elliott Swanton, curriculum leader for physical education at Hanham Woods Academy said: “Our Year 10 boys football team have had an incredibly successful season, winning 100 per cent of all games played. They are the South Glos Champions, Bristol and South Glos Champions, Gloucester FA Champions and the winners of the Woodcock Shield."

KEYNSHAM Life Saving Club is gearing up for the summer! Six instructors have qualified to provide safety cover for the club's popular open-water training. The club will run a series of sessions in the River Avon at Saltford in June and July to give club members the opportunity to put their lifesaving skills to the test in a real-life environment, supervised by an experienced team of instructors. Members will learn how to spot hazards and stay safe in open water. They’ll also learn communication skills and hand-signals, and get to use specialised rescue equipment such as throw-bags and paddle boards. Club chairman, David “Blondie” Fielding, said “The instructors at Keynsham Life Saving Club are a fantastic bunch – really positive and dedicated. When I first suggested running open-water training sessions three years ago they leapt at the chance and the sessions just keep getting better. Crowds turn out for community fun day A FREE community fun day at The Meadows Primary in Bitton to mark the arrival of new play equipment proved a huge success. Marvellous Meadows Mayhem was organised by headteacher Joy Mounter and her staff and the school’s active Friends group, who have been fundraising for the equipment for a long time. Big crowds turned out for the event on Saturday May 11. The day included a bouncy castle, live music and a barbecue, was supported by St Mary’s Church, Linden Homes and WMAT’s catering company Zest. The choir and dance group performed and visitors had a chance to tour the school. Attractions included animal handling from Avon Valley Country Park, a vintage bus from Avon Valley Railway, zorbs from Progressive Sports, seed planting from Fonthill garden centre, a display by

Meadows headteacher Joy Mounter with Wellsway Multi Academy Trust chief executive Andrea Arlidge and her deputy Matthew Cottrell with representatives of Linden Homes and the Friends of the Meadows on the new play equipment Avon & Somerset police and craft activities from pre-schools, nurseries and toddler groups. Historic information came from the history society and the chocolate dinosaurs (ex Fry’s

employees). Mrs Mounter said the Friends had helped secure grants of £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund and £5,000 from the charity One Family. Linden

Homes, which is building houses at Bitton Mill, also donated £500. “The Meadows is a brilliant school and we have a lovely friendly and supporitve school community,” she said. Andrea Arlidge, WMAT chief executive, said: “We are so proud of The Meadows Primary School. We have seen huge improvements here. Joy Mounter and her fantastic staff go above and beyond to make sure the children get a wonderful experience.” Sarah Williams, regional sales manager at Linden Homes, said: “We are delighted to support The Meadows Primary School by contributing £500 towards their new playground – it looks wonderful. As we’re creating family homes in the village we thought it was the perfect way to support the local community – encouraging the children to get outside, have fun and get active!”

nTHOUGHT NEWS FOR THE MONTH With Emma King, Keynsham parish children and families worker

‘BEING at school is the best days of your life’. How many of us have heard that saying? The endless days of being with your friends, the excitement of learning new things, the school trips, running around the playground at break time without a care in the world and of course… fish and chip Fridays. This all seems lovely, in a perfect world, but the reality at this time of year is very different. In primary schools, the Year 2s and Year 6s have just completed SATS, and in senior school, there

Party time at the tower

We can't sit the exams for our children and young people - but we can keep them in our thoughts and make sure we pray for them

are exams for GCSEs and A Levels going on. In a time of what should be ‘The best days of their lives’, there is a huge amount of pressure on the children and young people of our parish. So how can we, in Keynsham Parish, make a difference and help? We can’t take their exams, we can’t sit with them all day at school, but we can pray. Jesus often took himself away to pray to God, to ask God to guide him, and that is what Jesus tells us to do. In Matthew Ch 18 V

19, Jesus tells us, “I promise that when any two of you on earth agree about something you are praying for, my Father in heaven will do it for you” Let’s pray for our schools, let’s pray for all the children and young people, let’s pray for the teachers and staff in schools, lets makes a difference to their lives and let’s make school ‘the best days of their lives’ again. As God begins to answer your prayers for your local school, amazing things can happen!

PENSFORD'S popular Tower Tea Party, will take place on Sunday June 9, from 2-5pm at St Thomas a Becket Church and Pensford Church Rooms. Organising the event will be the Friends of Pensford Church Tower. There are guided tours to the top of the tower, with an opportunity to see the ancient oak bell frame and lock mechanism, and also to admire the views. There will also be music from local singer Jacqui Haigh. After the church shut following the 1968 flood, the tower remained consecrated. It was restored by the Churches Conservation Trust and was officially opened and rededicated in 2011. For further information call Jane Flower on 01761 490234.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Treat 999 call handlers with respect I’M under no illusion how difficult policing is and the challenging circumstances our police officers and emergency services face on a daily basis to keep our communities safe. However, it’s not just our colleagues on the frontline who face abuse; abusive calls to 999 and 101 call handlers is on the rise. Unfortunately, our call handlers have come to expect swearing and name-calling but in more serious cases some of our call handlers have received death threats and threats of rape. One individual even threatened to burn down a call handler’s house with her children inside. The reality that our call handlers face is unacceptable. Our call handlers, who go above and beyond to protect us from harm, deserve to come to work without being worried about potential abuse they might face during their shift. They deserve to be treated with respect and we all need to show

support to these individuals who work so hard to keep our communities safe. Nationally, there has been an increase in 999 calls and within Avon and Somerset we have seen an 8% year on year increase. This 8% equates to approximately an extra 48 calls every day or an additional five hours of call handling per day. Disappointingly, some 999 calls are not emergencies and some are even hoaxes. We need to remember that non-emergency calls to 999 could be blocking a real emergency and this is deadly serious. In May, we supported Mental Health Awareness Week. Many mental health charities now believe that people are more aware and feel more empowered to tackle mental health. It is great that people now feel empowered to speak out about their experiences in schools, workplaces and in

their communities but we now need to turn this awareness into action. We know that mental health services are woefully underfunded and those experiencing a mental health problem wait an extremely long time to be able to access the treatments and the services they need. This all has an impact on our stretched emergency services, particularly policing. For example, in Avon and Somerset, on average, an incident involving someone in a mental health crisis will take four and a half hours of an officer’s time. The majority of contact when someone is experiencing a mental health crisis into the police is by the communications centre as 101 or 999 calls. The average time on these calls is 77.9% higher than the average call and mental health related calls take up 12% of all calls. We cannot offer the best support to those suffering a

mental health crisis in the back of a police car; we need to work in partnership to create a longerterm solution that involves all public services to provide those experiencing a mental health problem with the support they deserve.

Willsbridge Mill: what a find!

Thanks for putting your trust in us

HAVING seen the Keynsham Walking Festival advertised in the Keynsham Voice, we planned to try the Willsbridge Mill walk on Sunday 28th April. Unfortunately we were a few minutes late arriving and missed the group walk but we did our own and found it was a beautiful place for a dog walk, with a lovely cafe for coffee and cake at the end of the walk! We wouldn't have got round to going there if we hadn't seen the Walking Festival advertised. Hoping to take the grandchildren there in the summer holidays too for some pond-dipping. Alison, Whitchurch

MAY we use your columns to thank all the voters of Keynsham East ward and Saltford ward who supported us at the recent local elections for Bath and North East Somerset Council. We wish to thank all involved for a civilised, decent campaign. Now elected, we are honoured and delighted to have the opportunity to serve as ward councillors to represent everyone in our respective wards. Compostable food packaging – revolution or rubbish? A RECENT survey by sustainability charity Hubbub found that the UK’s growing ‘lunch on the go’ habit is generating nearly 11 billion items of packaging waste a year, much of which is not recycled. The waste ranges from sandwich cartons, napkins, crisp packets, takeaway containers and snack wrappers. Reading about the survey got me thinking about compostable food and drink packaging. Some companies are now offering plant-based bioplastic (PLA) food packaging and coffee cups, and many independent coffee shops (and even the House of Commons!) have switched to them, believing that they’re better for the environment. Unfortunately, it’s not so simple. Most of the PLA-coated coffee cups and PLA food packaging are only compostable in a specialist composter, of which there are 18 for the entire UK. Even if you live in an area where your local authority

has access to this specialist kit (spoiler alert, B&NES doesn’t), it’s likely that your cup will end up in landfill. Why? Because waste sorters (both people and machines) can’t tell the difference between a conventional or compostable cup. We’re all told to ‘reduce, reuse, recycle,’ but what isn’t so obvious is the hierarchy – first reduce, then reuse, and finally if it’s impossible to do the first two, recycle. In terms of food and drink packaging, the waste hierarchy is simple. Make your own lunch (reduce), and if you can’t, bring your own reusable coffee cup and food container to your local sandwich shop (reuse). It does take a bit of forward planning, but I think that’s a small price to pay. If you’d like to read more about why bioplastics aren’t the answer to food packaging waste, Bristol based organisation City to Sea has a great FAQ on it. Visit www. citytosea.org.uk/bioplastics

Big Pharma

Happy time at Kingfisher Lodge BABY animals bring joy to people of all ages, as Kingfisher Lodge Care Centre in Saltford found out when it opened its doors to visitors - and some seven-day-old lambs. Children, parents and residents enjoyed bottle-feeding the cuddly creatures. A spokesman said: “We welcomed the community in and the staff and residents said how lovely it was to see children having fun in the home. The baby lambs were loved from the very moment the staff, residents and visitors set their eyes on them and everyone enjoyed cuddles and feeding them milk from the bottles.”

Not too well, I’m feeling low, So off to see the doc I go, First we have a little chat, Then tests for this and tests for that, Then when the results come through, He sends me to the Royal U., And puts me in their careful hands, More tests, X-rays and CT scans, Probe me, prod me, prick me and pummel me, Wheel me round from here to there, All the medics get their share, Of having a look to see what they can see. They... gave... me... Bisoporol to block my beta, Apixaban to make it neater, And Furosemide to make me wee, Digoxin and Diltiazem, Are also part of the stratagem, Big Pharma’s making a fortune out of me. So now I’m back, I have a stack, Of loads of pills to cure my ills, To take with wherever I go,

What good they do, I do not know, But I swallow them down, just in case, And rattle around from place to place, There’s white ones in various sizes, Coloured ones in different guises, Sexy blue and pretty pastel puce, I follow what the doctors say, And swallow them down three times a day, Though I’ve yet to be convinced they’re any use. n BACK TO NATURE

Our birdwatchers have been in seventh heaven! with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group ON Friday May 17, Kathy Farrell and I handed over a cheque for £1812.01 to Ian Barrett, chief executive of the Avon Wildlife Trust, writes chairman Dave Sage. The cheque represents all the money raised over the last year by the Keynsham group of the Trust. Kathy has undoubtedly been one of the main driving forces behind this excellent fund-raising, selling home made goods at our indoor

meetings and elsewhere. These include bird food, all manner of edible goodies and her special LED lamps made from “empty spirit and wine bottles”. I am assured that she doesn’t drink all the contents first! Kathy has stated that she “is doing much less this year” – but she still plays a key and formidable role in the running of the local group, which has thrived since she joined the committee a few years ago. Ian thanked the group for all they are doing to champion wildlife in Keynsham, and for providing enjoyment, entertainment and education for the large audiences which attend our talks each month through the winter, and summer walks. To underline these roles, our field trip on Saturday May 18 was

to Ham Wall, near Meare on the Somerset levels. The 12 members who came on the minibus (thus reducing our carbon footprint) were expertly guided around this outstanding RSPB reserve by volunteers Bob Buck (who also happens to help manage St George’s flower bank at Portbury) and Lee Dutton. The weather was very kind; clear and bright with high cloud and light winds; perfect for birdwatching. Normally these visits produce one or two highlights, but we were

lucky enough to get seven! 1. We had hardly set off before we saw two hobbies circling overhead. One of the smaller birds of prey, the hobby is also the fastest in the UK in level flight, and so manoeuvrable that it can catch swallows, swifts and dragonflies in mid-air. 2. The great white egret, although increasing, is still nationally rare and so seeing a few of these magnificent herons, some at quite close range, was remarkable.

n BACK TO NATURE

3. Red kites were at one time almost extinct in the UK but are now spreading far and wide following a successful feeding programme in mid-Wales. These beautiful birds of prey are easy to spot with their forked tail. 4. The bittern is another bird on the verge of extinction and was specially introduced to the Somerset levels after careful conservation management work. To firstly hear the incredible low-pitched booming of the male, then to see one flying low over the reedbeds was a privilege, especially there are still only 80 breeding males in

the country. 5. A water rail with chicks was spotted by some members close to a hide, skulking among the reeds. Occasionally heard (a call like a squealing pig!) but very rarely seen, this relative of the coot and moorhen is a real wetland speciality. 6. A marsh harrier was seen soaring high above the hide, using the warm air currents to gain height. Soon afterwards, a female was seen hunting low over the reed beds, with her characteristic flap and glide, before descending rapidly into the reeds, perhaps catching prey. 7. A cuckoo was heard calling; once a common spring sound but for most of us, this was the first time we’d heard one for many years. Scientists are not sure about the causes of this 65% decline since the 1980s; studies investigating changes in breeding habits of birds whose nests the female birds lay their eggs in, and of changes in the populations of prey species have proved inconclusive. If these weren’t enough, we also saw two Lapwings mobbing

a crow, other Lapwings displaying, some beautiful damselflies and dragonflies, & butterflies, including peacock & speckled wood. In total, we saw and heard 45 bird species (admittedly including three from the minibus on the way home!), three more than the previous record from our Chew Valley Lake visit last year. While we were in the Tor View hide, Bob Buck told us

that it was a magical place to be in the early morning, with the Dawn Chorus all around and Glastonbury Tor in full view on the horizon. The only disappointment was the non-appearance of bearded tit, nor yellow wagtail, although the latter is not normally seen at this part of the Somerset levels. Nevertheless, a superb afternoon’s bird watching!

BOOKS OF THE MONTH with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Mermaid & Mrs HancockImogen Hermes Gowar This book follows a trend in modern fiction that has stories set in the past that has a magical, supernatural quality to the stories as well. This is a popular book and set in 1785, sees Jonah Hannock as a successful merchant and one night one of his captains comes to his door and tells him that he has sold one of his ships for what appears to be a mermaid. This startling revelation spreads around the docks, coffee houses and parlours – everyone wants to see the mermaid! Jonah is then plunged into a new business world which takes him into high society and he meets the enigmatic Angelica Neale. Her business proposition and ambition takes Jonah onto a risky path – but he cannot leave Ms Neale alone. This is definitely an adult read but a story about love, friendship and loss. There are a number of twists and definitely an interesting story with some great historical set pieces.

Heads you win Jeffrey Archer This is one of the latest books written by the ever popular Jeffrey Archer. It has just arrived in Keynsham Library and as ever looks

a good read, especially while on holiday. It starts in Leningrad, in the Soviet Union in 1968. Alexander Karpenko is destined for a great career in the Soviet government but when his father is assassinated by the KGB, he and his mother have to escape Russia. When they are at the dock side to leave Russia, they have to make a choice either board a container ship bound for America or Great Britain. This decision is made on a toss of a coin… The decision made at that dock side impacts greatly on Alexander’s future and so begins a great tale spanning thirty years and the history of the late nineteenth century, from the Vietnam War to the fall of the Soviet Union. National Book Trust week (3rd-9th June 2019) The National Book Trust is launching “Pjamarama” – a national initiative to encourage more bedtime stories. So every pyjama party needs a good book, so the Keynsham Library is handing out a free copy of “Car, Car, Truck, Jeep” and let the fun begin.

you to read something about it. Adam Kay decided to share with us his personal diaries of a junior doctor. When Adam chose his speciality, he went for gynaecology and obstetrics because as he says it is the only department in an hospital that if you are lucky you will have two patients leaving instead of one. It is often rude, but it is hilarious, touching, hurting and painful. The reality described will probably make fall all the clichés you had about doctors, their salaries, and the NHS. In a world where we have more and more people to care for and not enough doctors and nurses, we should appreciate the ones who are here to make a difference.

Elena Favilli Reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library Assistant Second volume of this ambitious project: to give to children stories about women who are heroes on their own. Beautifully illustrated, each page is the story of a different woman often from a different country. They can be spies, scientist, doctors, singers, aviators, … they all show courage, and ambition when and where the odds were against them. You can read one page at a time, I am sure you will come across some of those ladies that will become your role models easily. I have a particular soft spot for Katia Krafft, but she was already my childhood hero. I am expecting this volume to lead to many other ones!

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

The story of the Bristol Riots

S

OCIETY members enjoyed an insight into a sometimes neglected part of Bristol’s history last month, with a guided walk focused on the sites associated with the Bristol Riots of 1831. Leader Steve Spear provided an enthralling and detailed explanation of the rather complex story of the Riots, which were a response to remarks on the support for the Reform Bill by judge Sir Charles Wetherell. Trouble was anticipated when Wetherell visited the city on 29th October and a small number of troops had been sent to the city. (One detachment of Dragoon Guards were stationed in Keynsham and some believe that the name “Dragon’s Hill” arises from that.) Over the next three days the riots escalated from a relatively peaceful but unruly protest to major civil disorder in which the city’s jails were broken into – with the prisoners released – buildings looted and the Mansion House, Custom House and Bishop’s Palace among those burned down. Finally, on Monday 31st October, with more of Queen Square being destroyed, the Dragoons charged and brought the rioting to a violent end. The Riots were the worst of several across the country and the consequences were significant. Locally, some of the rioters were tried and executed, others transported; at national level the Great Reform Act was passed the following year, beginning the process of extending the right to vote; a few years later the system of local government was reformed and boroughs were required to establish police forces. The group in Queen Square, where many buildings were destroyed in the riots Today there is nothing to mark the violence and bloodshed that took place and all the buildings have been rebuilt or replaced long ago – the Riots are not something that the City wishes to remember. The Brassworks Cone Prominent on the pub-style sign at the Brass Mill Restaurant on Avon Mill Lane is a large conical structure, reminding one of the kilns that

once marked the glass factories in central Bristol and Nailsea. What was the purpose of this cone and why is it a key part of the Brass Mill’s history? The Avon Mill was the largest of the various brass mills set up in the area in the first half of the eighteenth century. Its location on the Avon took advantage of the much greater flow of water compared to the older Chew Mill nearby, to power more water-wheels and it also had a more reliable flow in dry summer periods. The works specialized in the manufacture of wire, starting from slabs of brass 12” (300mm) wide, which were brought up the river from Bristol. These were first rolled several times to give flat strips about a third of that width, which were then slit into narrow strips called strings to be drawn through upright rolls to make the wire. Through these various processes, the brass became hard and brittle so it could not be worked any more. To prevent this, the brass had to be softened or annealed from to time to time, by heating to 370 deg C in furnaces long enough to hold the strips. The large brick cone which

dominated the site stood above these annealing furnaces in order to create sufficient draught. It was thus essential to the efficiency of the wire production. A view beneath the cone, showing the entrance to the long annealing ovens At Saltford Brass Mill and at Kelston Mills, the tall structures that remain today served the same purpose but are older, smaller and constructed of stone rather than brick . After the Avon Mill closed in 1927, the cone did not survive for long; it was demolished soon afterwards, removing a distinctive feature of the Keynsham skyline. This Month’s History Walk - Saltford On Monday 10th June at 7.00pm and on Thursday 13th June at 10.30am, as part of the Saltford Festival, Rodger Fowler will be leading a history walk around Saltford village. OUT AND ABOUT with Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome

T

HE fourth annual Keynsham Walking Festival got under way on Friday 26th April, with a really good turnout for the first walk. Once again, Keynsham Walkers are Welcome teamed up with Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society for a short walk entitled " A History of Keynsham Town Centre" The walk was lead by dave Johnson, who is a member of both organisations. Meeting at St johns Church for a talk about the oldest building in the town that is still in use., other stops included the abbey, Keynsham Mill, The New Inn, Dapps Hill,, Albert Mill, Temple Street, and finally the High Street Unfortunately a lot of the historic building have been demolished, a lot within the last 50 years, so the participants had to use their imagination. The 90 minute walk finished at what is now the Halifax, but used to be the Methodist Church and an Eyelet factory. A round of applause for dave, meant it was time to

retire to a local hostelry for some welcome refeshment. Sadly on the Saturday, the weather took a turn for the worse, and the three walks arranged for that day were not well supported. The first was a short walk lead by Derek Butler and assisted by his wife Vanessa,, headed south along the River Chew to Chewton and place and back on the other side of the river. Dave Johnson was again on hand to lead the walk to hanham Court, with this time Mike Stone as back marker. The final walk of the day was to Compton Dando, and Woollard, lead by Ross Drury, standing in for his mother Dawn, with Marie Carder assisting. This was the longest walk of the event, and Ross did an admirable job on what is a difficult walk. Saturday evenings social event was at St Dunstans Church Hall were a very successful quiz took place, with everyone having a cheddar ploughmans and a glass of wine or two.

Sunday saw an improvement in the weather and an upturn in attendances, with Ross leading the long walk of the day to Marksbury Vale, with Derek acting as back marker this time. A welcoming stop for refreshments was made at the Compton Inn. We were fortunate to have Richard Dyson, chair of the Local History Society, to lead the themed walk to Burnett, stopping off along the way to point out places of historical interest. The final walk of the festival was lead by Mike Stone, backed by his

wife Lin and took in a circular walk to Willsbridge Mill. All three walks finished together at the Memorial Park where a family finale took place wher caitlin Brennan and Bob Rumming-Pain were on hand with face painting and balloon modelling. Team Adventure also put in an apprearence. Although numbers were down, everybody enjoyed themselves, and the organising group are alrady thinking of improvements for next year.

Wonderful woodland in High Littleton ON Saturday May 18, the Keynsham Walkers Are Welcome group hopped on the 178 bus from Keynsham to explore the 90 acre Woodland Trust Greyfield Wood on the outskirts of the village of High Littleton. The group of 18, including three new walkers were enchanted by the tranquillity that the woods have to offer. The well maintained paths that meander through the woods presented an abundance of flora and fauna. The walkers were extremely excited when they spotted a deer some 10 metres from the path that they were walking along. This late spring time walk was delightful as the woodland was a sea of bluebells and the two hour walk the group was entertained by cheerful bird song. The dry weather experienced recently, gave the walkers the opportunity to view the waterfall not only from the top but up close by following the stream to the pool at the foot of the cascade. Many of the walkers returned by to Keynsham saying that they intended to return to the wonderful woodland that is so close to our home town'.

Crista went through some important hockey techniques and skills, leading the session with Academy coach Rod Naughalty. She spent time with them as a group and gave some great 1:1 coaching points. Richard May, KHC Academy coordinator and organiser of the event, said: "We are very grateful to Crista for coming to visit us. It was a fantastic opportunity for lots of our Academy players to be coached by a former GB Olympic gold medallist. I’m sure that her visit will stay in the their memories and will hopefully inspire them to continue their hockey playing for many years to come.” One of the players said: "It was really good to have Crista come and coach us today. We learned a lot from her and she has inspired me to keep getting better."

Keynsham Town’s 63-goal Bristol Bats prove too NATIONAL FOR KEYNSHAM T strong for Buccaneers Kerry Bartlett honouredAWARD KEYNSHAM Town Ladies centre forward, Kerry Bartlett has won a top award at the FA National Women’s Football Awards for her record breaking 63 goals scored this season in 33 League and Cup games, in the FAWNL Division One South West including eleven individual hat-tricks. The awards evening was held at St Georges Park, the main centre for the Football Association, to give recognition to the top female players in football. Keynsham Town Ladies manager, Barrie Newton, said ‘Kerry has had a remarkable season with a goal tally that I do not think will be replicated again in top level women’s football. Her total would possibly have been higher, if she had not picked up a niggling injury towards the end of the season.’ Kerry is pictured above receiving her award as top goal scorer from the England Women’s football team manager, Phil Neville.

BRISTOL Bats overcame the Bristol Buccaneers in a high scoring baseball derby at Somerdale Pavilion. The Bats eventually ran out 46-21 winners after the Buccaneers mounted a spirited-14 run comeback in the fifth innings. The Buccaneers took advantage of some costly Bats fielding errors before succumbing to a greater depth on the Bats’ bench. Ricky Gellatly was the Bats’ MVP after a strong all round game. He was solid at the plate scoring four runs and contributing six RBIs. He also struck out six Buccaneers to close out the comeback. Tsz Yan Chan continued to impress on the pitchers mound but was hit by the sloppy fielding by the Bat. Catcher Tom Rowe showed great discipline at the plate and scored seven runs. It was also a dream debut for Ben Hamilton who scored four runs and hit two RBIs. “Whilst we are delighted to get the win, we cannot commit so many errors if we have title ambitions,” said Tom Rowe, assistant manager of the Bats. “The Buccaneers really took advantage of our lapses and showed how far they have come in such as short time.” Despite the loss, the Buccaneers had plenty to cheer about. Joint MVPs Billy Garrett and Steve Ayres had great games with the bat. Ayres also impressed in only his second game as catcher. “It was always going to be tough against what is a very strong and experienced Bats team but we showed fantastic spirit and when we had the opportunity to take advantage we did to great effect,” said Buccaneers manager Richard Evans.

Frys club hails Brian's 60 years of bowling ON Saturday 18th May, Frys Bowling Club held their club match as the Brian Hill Celebration Match to celebrate club member Brian Hill's 60th year as a member of the club, which also happened to be Brian's birthday. Brian captained one team with club captain Stephen Day captaining the other team. After falling behind early on, Brian's team pulled away towards the end to claim victory winning 2 of the 3 rinks on a day which Brian thoroughly enjoyed. Brian joined the club in 1959 after twice winning the Fry's Chocolate Factory interdepartmental tournament in 1957 and 1959. Brian has served the club as an officer in various roles, as well as carrying out practical jobs around the facilities. Brian was made a life member in 1997 for his service to the club, and has continued to help the club since then. A presentation was made by Club Secretary Christopher Day to thank Brian for his 60 years at the Club. Thursday 26th April Last Thursday saw the start of the Bristol and District League Division 2 with Frys hosting Yate 'A' on a sunny but windy evening. A close start continued into the halfway point with no team really getting too far ahead. A few loose ends from Frys saw Yate start to take a lead. Just as it looked like Yate would go on to take the match, Frys came back. After falling 8 shots back, Rink 1 pulled back the deficit. Yate were able to stay ahead on rink 2, with Frys just keeping ahead on rink 3. With rinks 2 and 3 keeping their final ends tight, the penultimate end on rink 1 saw a Frys pack in 5 shots to take the rink lead, but also closed the match to 3 shots with 2 ends left. With rink 2 dropping a single on the last end to hold on by one shot, it left Frys 4 behind. With the skips on rink 1 left to play, Frys found themselves shot down, but with 3 seconds. With Frys skip looking to play a hit and stay shot to get the 4 to draw, the bowl looked good, but caught the edge of Yate's bowl taking it out the head, but Frys bowl ran out the head, leaving Frys 1 shot short, but took 4

with his final bowl, Frys wrapped up a 45-41 win taking 8 points from the night. Scores: Rink 1: 19-12; Rink 2: 15-13; Rink 3: 11-16; Frys 45-41 Keynsham 'A' (8-2).

Brian Hill presentation points from the 2 rink wins. Scores: Rink 1: 20-15; Rink 2: 9-16; Rink 3: 13-12; Frys 42-43 Yate 'A' (4-6). Thursday 2nd May The second game of the league season saw Frys travel to Knowle 'A'. Early rain soon relented and Frys were able to get an early lead. Knowle came back on rinks 2 and 3 closing the game up. Frys were able to keep pulling away on rink 1 which gave a good lead. Rink 3 found themselves 4 shots down in the closing ends, but a good last few ends saw Frys close to within one shot. A good final end saw Frys pick up 4 shots to take the rink and allow rink 1 to close out the game with rink 2 having one end to finish. Going into the final end, Frys were 2 shots up, but needed the skip to remove one Knowle's 3 shots with his final bowl to secure a draw leaving Frys with 9 points from a 51-40 win and currently sit third in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 17-9; Rink 2: 17-17; Rink 3: 17-14; Frys 51-40 Knowle 'A' (9-1). Thursday 9th May Keynsham 'A' made the short trip across to Somerdale on a sunny but windy night. A close start set the tone as Frys slowly edged ahead, with rinks 1 and 2 getting out to a lead. Keynsham slowly pulled back the lead on

rink 2 closing the game right up. With all rinks playing the last end at the same time, scores were tied. Rink 1 picked the win and two shots, with rink 3 losing the rink and dropping a single, it left Frys one shot up, with rink 2 left to finish, needing two shots to win the rink. A loose final end left Frys 3 shots down, with the skip having one bowl left. With options at the back, a forehand runner saw the jack clipped out for a dead end. A better replayed end saw Frys with bowls surrounding the Keynsham shot. A controlled backhand from the skips first bowl removed the Keynsham bowl to leave Frys with 3 shots. With Keynsham skip not able to change anything

Thursday 16th May: Frys travelled to Canford for the fourth game of the league season. After a close start, Canford went into the lead, but Frys soon pulled back at the halfway point and continued to pull away, with rinks 2 and 3 gaining leads. After finding themselves 14 shots up into the closing ends. Canford didn't give and soon pulled the deficit back, with rink 1 losing shots quickly and some saved shots on other rinks giving Canford a 1 shot lead with 2 ends to finish. Frys levelled the game with the final end on rink 1, but despite holding shot on rink 2, Canford's skip trailed the jack to give Canford 3 shots and a 45-42 win with Frys only taking home 2 points leaving Frys 4th in the table. Scores: Rink 1: 11-17; Rink 2: 16-10; Rink 3: 15-18; Frys 4245 Canford (2-8). Keynsham crowned champions KEYNSHAM Town FC’s Mens First Team secured their dream of promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division last month. After a season-long tussle with Cheddar, the Ks stormed to victory in their last 7 games and in the end ran out Champions by a margin of 9 points. The highlight of that run was a superb 2-0 win away at Cheddar early in April, with second half goals by Stef Lee and Matt Brown sending the Ks to the top of the table. They never looked back! The club’s other 3 senior sides have also had wonderful seasons. The Reserves won promotion to the Somerset County League Premier Division with an avalanche of goals to finish as runners up to Mendip Broadwalk. The A Team, having been promoted in successive seasons to the third tier of the

Bristol & Suburban League, again exceeded expectations and finished an excellent third. The Under 18s also improved on last season, with a third place

finish in the Somerset Floodlit Youth League and winning the Supplementary Competition. Add to all this the success of Keynsham Town’s Ladies Senior Team, who stormed to the South West Division 1 title, it has certainly been a remarkable 9 months for the Ks and a season which will live long in the memories of all concerned! Club Secretary Julian French said: “Easter Monday was a day which will live long in the memory of everyone connected to Keynsham Town FC! The post-match celebrations on the pitch with players and their families, in the clubhouse and then with our good friends up The Old Bank, were fantastic (from what I can remember)! As you will probably recall, we got off to a slow start this season, and as we entered November, we sat in 6th position in the table with 20 points from our first 12 games. Since then, our form has been phenomenal……26 League games played, 24 wins, 1 draw, 1 defeat, with 68 goals scored and only 11 conceded (no less than 17 clean sheets included in that run)! Add to that an average home league attendance of 158, the Ks are a force to be reckoned with!” Club Chairman Malcolm Trainer added; “Massive thanks must also go to the club’s sponsors, Smart Computers, The Old Bank, KitCo, R J Scaffolding and Dribuild, who have helped raise our profile and maintain

our club’s financial position. Apart from the overheads of running 4 Senior teams, such as affiliation fees, competition entry fees and player insurance, playing a game at Crown Fields costs the Senior Section of the club up to £400 (renting the pitch, floodlights, match officials’ expenses, players food, tea hut stock, laundry, programmes, etc), which soon tots up when we have 4 teams and in excess of 50 home games in a season”. We also caught up with a jubilant Manager, John Allen. He said: “Before I talk about our fantastic group of players, I must start by thanking all who came out to support us at home to Ashton & Backwell on Easter Monday, where all 338 made it a day to remember. You are the best supporters in the league and the statistics will back that up; Monday was the biggest crowd not only in our league but in both divisions, and we were so proud we could win the title in front of you. Your support has helped us immeasurably over the season, and we share all of our success with each and every one of you! On arriving at the club last season, I came here with one goal in mind, to take this club on from the great work previously done by Chris, Sean and Russ and get us promoted to the Premier League! I cannot tell you how important Russ has been in this process - it has been a pleasure to work with him, his boundless enthusiasm

Head coaches step down

and knowledge has been a key factor in our success. His support for me as assistant manager had been second to none, along with Jamie, Garc and Rich, we really are a team and I feel privileged to be surrounded by such great people! Having said all the above, the players deserve the most credit. Their togetherness, commitment and qualities both individually and collectively are the reason we became Champions for the first time since 1978. I hope they are forever remembered at this club,

and we look forward to working together in the Premier League in a new exciting chapter in the club’s history”. These days there is little “time off” over the summer for those involved with the club, and their pre-season schedule of friendlies is currently being put together before the players return for training in late June. You can keep up with the club’s news on both Facebook (Keynsham Town Football Club) and Twitter (@ KeynshamTownFC).

HEAD coaches Jason Wheatley and Kevin Appleton will step down from their roles at Keynsham Rugby Club at the end of the 2018/2019 season due to work and family commitments. Jase and Kev have worked tirelessly for a decade in developing players throughout the club. This has not only been pivotal in the 1st XV’s promotion to South West 1 but also maintaining our position in that league. Although senior section coaches Jase and Kev are well known throughout the club, they have been frequently down helping the junior age groups as well as assisting with the U18s, creating an excellent link between the younger players in the club and the seniors. Jason said: “It’s been a real privilege to have been given the opportunity to coach at a fantastic club with a great tradition. It is with a very heavy heart that I will be leaving my senior coaching position. The players have played a huge part in developing me as a person as well as a coach over the last 10 years and I have had an unbelievable time. I am immensely proud of the club, its players and the significant successes that we have enjoyed together.” Kevin added: “I have had an amazing eight years at the club and leave with some fantastic friends and memories. I have been part of many rugby clubs over the years and nothing compares to the experiences I have had at Keynsham; this is down to the people across the club making it such a great club.” A club spokesman said: "We would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to them both for their commitmen. It is very rare you find that coaches who commit themselves to one club for that long! We hope they look back at their time at Crown Fields with fond memories and look forward to seeing them around the club. The Rugby Committee will in good time look to seek a successor to Jase and Kev. With the strong foundations built by Jase and Kev and the club in a strong position.

Keynsham Town Ladies achieve unique double

KEYNSHAM Town Ladies Football Club has had a remarkable season, achieving a unique double as both FAWNL SW League Champions and Senior County Cup Winners. A feat not seen since season 2006-07. FA Women’s National League SW Champions Somerset County Senior Women’s Cup Winners KTLFC manager, Barrie Newton,

outlined that ‘the League Championship was clearly the big prize with promotion to tier three of the women’s pyramid, jut one level below the two super leagues. Not only that, but we did it in style winning 17 matches, drawing two and losing just one fixture. Goals scored were 114 with only 14 conceded, to give a remarkable 100 goal difference. Next year the step

up will be large, but we have an experienced squad all committed and with a few additions we aim to hold our own against big clubs, such as Portsmouth, Watford, MK Dons, Cardiff and Plymouth, punching above our weight for a small town the size of Keynsham. The County Cup win over Brislington was not easy, as we had players away and a thin

squad, not made any easier when we went down to 10 with a red card in the first half and were 1-0 down, but the players dug in and came back to win 2-1 with two excellent strikes from midfielder, Ellie Curson. That was not the only icing on the cake as the club’s U16s also won their County Cup, defeating Yeovil Town 4-1.’
