Plans for employment land off the A4 Bath Road in Keynsham Image: St Congar/Places for People

Fears over industrial estate bid

FEARS have been raised that a new industrial estate planned in Keynsham could expose more residents to noise and disruption. Councillor Andy Wait said homeowners were “cursed” by living next to a concrete plant and that Bath and North East Somerset Council risked making the same mistake again. Almost 150 people have objected to plans for buildings spanning up to 5,700sqm for business, industrial process, general industrial and storage uses on a site off the A4 Bath Road that the authority has allocated as employment land. Keynsham Town Council said the plans were unacceptable as the development would harm road safety and create further congestion, while Turn to Page 2

Saltford Parish Council feared the applicants had “grossly underestimated” the number of vehicle movements. Both councils said the development would add another junction on the busy A4 and should not be built before improvements are made to local infrastructure. Councillor Wait, the ward member for Keynsham East, said Van Dyke Avenue residents’ lives continued to be “cursed” by the behaviour of occupiers of an industrial site nearby. He told planning committee members on November 17: “It appears that B&NES Council are at risk of making the same mistake again. “As we’ve seen elsewhere in Keynsham, having a B2 site [used for general industrial purposes] so close to many houses is a recipe for disaster. There’s no reason why another concrete-making plant couldn’t go there, or even an iron foundry. Light industrial use should be the maximum allowable activity. “The type of industrial activity being considered is inappropriate for the site.” Mike Williams, whose Bath Road home adjoins the site, said the land is only one part of a wider development and there should be an adequate, longterm primary access route for the whole site. But Ralph Salmon, the director of joint applicant St Congar, told members: “This application brings forward employment and will create

jobs on a site that’s allocated for employment in your Local Plan. “There is no highways objection. The new junction into the site is compliant with standards and is safe for all users of the A4.” Planning officer Chris Griggs-Trevarthan said the site had been allocated for employment since 2014, adding: “We’ve already anticipated the vehicle movements that would be generated by the wider employment site.” He added: “There’s not a need for further infrastructure improvements to come forward to accommodate these vehicle movements other than the things secured by this application.” Planning committee members were not convinced, with Cllr Shaun Hughes suggesting the council was seeking the cheapest access, not the best. Keynsham East’s Cllr Hal MacFie said an exit onto World’s End Lane was the “natural route” for lorries. “We could end up with a cement place doing 150 vehicles movements and at the other end a distribution centre doing another 150,” he said. “We’ve seen people’s lives severely impacted because a B2 use was put too close to them. We shouldn’t have B2.” He called for a site visit so members can understand the issues, which Cllr Lucy Hodge said should happen at the start or end of the school day. The motion was supported by the committee. Stephen Sumner, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Billy lands dream role with Royal Ballet

A SALTFORD boy has landed a leading role in a Royal Ballet Company production of The Nutcracker. Billy Tucker, aged 12, is currently in year 8 at the Royal Ballet School, based at White Lodge in Richmond Park. He has been selected to play the main child role of Fritz this Christmas at the Royal Opera House. His proud mum Sian said: “Billy went to Saltford Primary School and did not start dancing until he was almost nine.” Billy then attended the Dorothy Coleborn School of Dancing in Bath. “The principal, Annette Hind, is just amazing and spotted his natural talent very quickly.” Billy auditioned for the Royal Ballet Associates, training on weekends with former Royal Ballet principal dancer Karen Paisey, who suggested that he audition for the actual Royal Ballet School. Sian said: “We never thought he would actually get in against

the hundreds of applicants from around the world, but he made it as one of the 15 boys currently in his year group. “It has been touch and go as to whether any pupils would be involved in the Royal Ballet Company’s The Nutcracker

Alex's epic hike to thank carers for saving his life A KEYNSHAM man is to go on an epic fundraising hike to thank the hospital staff who saved his life. Alex Hinder aims to cover over 100 miles on Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands to raise money for the cardiac ward at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. He said: “This will be no simple or easy challenge for me after suffering from three heart attacks and a stroke, then having a heart bypass and stent fitted. “I’m doing this to say a massive thank-you to all the amazing staff who have saved my life more than once.” Alex, 61, has already completed a few long-distance hikes in preparation for the challenge, including Two Moors Way (102 miles) and Coleridge Way (52 miles). He will be accompanied on his trek across Fuerteventura by his brother Richard, 62. They will set off on December 2 and aim to complete the route in eight days. Alex said: “My health condition means I need all the help and support I can get. But my brother, who is a very experienced hiker, is taking the lead with planning the routes, booking the accommodation, and most importantly acting as my right-hand man and safety net throughout the whole challenge.” Alex has set up JustGiving page for those who wish to support him. this year because of Covid. But they have chosen 11 children to perform, and Billy is one of the three who have been given the main role. “Billy trains so hard - six days per week, four hours a day - plus continues to work really hard

in his academic studies. He has two younger brothers who miss him like crazy when he is away at school, and as a family we feel like we live on the M4 as we are constantly up and down on weekends to bring him home.” The family, who live in Montague Road, are now bracing themselves for a hectic festive season. “We know that this Christmas is about to be manic as Billy will be performing in up to 30 shows starting from Monday November 22 all the way until January 8.” Although there are no previous dancers in the family, Billy’s youngest brother Niall now dances at the age of seven. Meanwhile, middle brother Louie, 10, loves football and “couldn’t think of anything worse than doing ballet!” Sian added: “Billy would love to be a principal dancer in the Royal Ballet Company one day. He also sings though and would love to be the lead in a West End production - he has high hopes!”

Helping Katie on A CHARITY evening has raised more than £5,000 to help a young Keynsham woman continue her recovery following a long battle with leukaemia. Katie Knight was diagnosed with the disease in June 2019, at the age of 16, when she was a pupil at Wellsway School. After more than two years of cancer treatment, she now needs intensive physiotherapy for the effects of a stroke. This treatment will be carried out in London, so an appeal has been launched to help cover the cost of Katie’s travel. To support Katie, an evening featuring Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow tribute acts was held at The Riverside pub in Salford. Organiser Lianne Morse said: “We raised £5,300, which will be used to support Katie’s ongoing rehabilitation, and also we will be making a donation to the Teenage Cancer Trust, who has supported Katie through her journey.” Katie was diagnosed with leukaemia while sitting her GCSEs at Wellsway. Her treatment began the following day, meaning Katie was not able to sit her final few exams and her dreams of attending her prom the following week were fading. She was admitted to the teenage and young adult ward at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Bristol for intensive chemotherapy. Her consultant’s top priority was getting Katie well enough

Katie Knight with Rob Eveleigh to leave hospital for a few hours to attend her prom. Katie’s determination meant she was able to last the duration of the prom before returning to her hospital bed having been crowned Prom Queen 2019. Early tests indicated that Katie was responding well to chemotherapy. But four weeks into her treatment, Katie experienced a devastating and rare side effect that led her to suffering a bleed on the brain, causing loss of movement in her left arm and leg. Two days later, Katie had a second and more severe stroke and was rushed to Southmead Hospital for emergency brain surgery to remove the clot. Katie returned to the paediatric intensive care unit at

Kaishu's BMX triumph KEYNSHAM BMX biker Kaishu Flukes has celebrated the end of the BMX season by winning two events at the South West championship. As is his tradition ahead of every race, Kaishu, 14, who goes to Wellsway School, had his final practice on the Longwell Green BMX pump track the night before the event. The good luck charm of the pump track did the trick, because the next day Kaishu came first in both categories he competed in. He won the male 14 and the cruiser 13-14 categories, competing on two different bikes at BMX Bristol in Patchway. These wins are in addition to Photo: Gideon Jones him winning the 2021 cruiser BMX British title for his age group at the British championship this summer. His brother Senshu, 10, is also a keen cyclist. The next big event for the boys is the world championships in France in summer 2022.

the children’s hospital, having lost all speech and movement. Weeks and months of rehabilitation followed, during which Katie’s resilience helped her learn to walk and talk again. Once she was strong enough, treatment for leukaemia was resumed, and Katie and her family had to deal with the sickness caused by chemotherapy and severe headaches, alongside

physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Among the highs and lows, Katie managed to attend Wellsway School to collect her GCSE results – she had passed them all. And on September 23 this year, after two years and three months, Katie finally got to ‘ring that bell’ to signify the end of her treatment. Her next battle is to continue her recovery from the effects

of her stroke. Among those supporting the appeal are the team at Eveleighs Estate Agents in Keynsham and Saltford. Robin Eveleigh, a partner in the company, said: “It has been an incredibly long and difficult journey for Katie, her family and friends. But throughout, Katie has stayed strong, positive and determined to fight this awful illness.

“Katie is an amazing local young lady and the team at Eveleighs Estate Agents are proud to support her on the next stage to her recovery.” A GoFundMe page – with a target of £1,000 – has been set up for those wishing to support Katie. Help us safeguard memorial to the fallen A KEYNSHAM councillor wants local people to join him in becoming a guardian of the British Normandy Memorial in France. The memorial, which officially opened at Ver Sur Mer in June this year, records the names of the 22,442 servicemen and women under British command who fell on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy in the summer of 1944. They include people from more than 30 countries. Inscribed in stone, their names have never, until now, been brought together. The site also includes a French memorial, dedicated to the memory of French civilians who died during this time.

Alan Hale, who represents Keynsham South on Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “As a community, Keynsham and the surrounding area came together to celebrate our fallen service personnel with the annual Remembrance Day. “Another way of celebrating those who gave the ultimate sacrifice is by becoming a guardian of the British Normandy Memorial. “I am one of only 280 guardians nationally. Whilst this is a national memorial on a foreign shore, there is very much a local connection, as 236 of the fallen on the memorial were from Somerset and 269 men of the Somerset Light Infantry were

killed in Normandy, including one man who was attached to the regiment as a CanLoan officer.” (CanLoan means an officer on loan from the Canadian Army). The role of the guardian programme is to safeguard the future of the memorial. The British government is not providing any funding for long-term maintenance and sustainability, so the memorial is relying on generous supporters to step in. Alan Hale said: “You will be the guardians of the memory of one of the most momentous events in our recent history.” To sign up as a guardian, visit www. britishnormandymemorial.org/donate/

Net Zero at Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm If COP26 has got you worried about what you can do about the climate crisis, an easy way to start is to visit Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm for your Christmas tree. Net zero means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, namely carbon dioxide and methane. Buying local means you can really reduce your carbon footprint. Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm is home to 40,000 Christmas trees spread over approximately 18 acres of green belt land next to the M32 motorway. All plants actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and the Christmas trees - which are evergreen – do this all year round. With the heavy motorway traffic nearby, there certainly is no shortage of carbon dioxide for the trees to mop up. “I think all of us are wondering what we can do on a personal level when it comes to climate change,” says Simon Maughan, managing director of Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. “A good way to start

Kate and Simon Maughan, owners of Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm invite you to buy your tree locally this year this Christmas is to make sure that we buy as much as we can for the festive season from local suppliers, whether it is food for the table, presents for the tree, or the tree itself.” “As for the Christmas tree, it’s

also important to consider what to do with it in the New Year. Burning it probably is the worst thing to do as it releases all that stored carbon directly back into the atmosphere. Many of our customers find a second use for their tree, as a bird

feeder for example, but by far the most common thing to do with it is to recycle it as chipped mulch.” “We accept hundreds of returned trees in January, and they all get put through the shredder. The bits rot down naturally on the ground, keeping the carbon in the ground, and also making homes for insects and food for fungi.” The Christmas tree site has in itself become a bit of a haven for wildlife. Birds nest in the trees, animals shelter under the trees, wild flowers such as orchids have begun to seed themselves in the grass around trees. 2021 saw the addition of a big pond, which is set to attract all sorts of other interesting residents, such as dragonflies. Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm is open every day from 9am to 5pm from Saturday 20th November. Infant school celebrates Ofsted praise CHANDAG Infant School in Keynsham is celebrating after again being rated a good school by the education watchdog Ofsted. Her Majesty’s Inspector Marie Thomas visited the 178-pupil school in Chandag Road for two days at the end of September and her report praises children, staff, governors and trustees. “Pupils at this school love learning,” the report declares. “Leaders and staff are ambitious for all pupils. The school’s curriculum inspires and challenges them. Staff and pupils live the school values. They treat each other with respect and kindness.” The Ofsted report finds that the school’s safeguarding is strong, with staff well trained to spot concerns and quick to support families in need of extra help. It says that children feel safe in school and parents believe this is because staff “genuinely care about the children”. It notes that pupils with special educational needs and disabilities make good progress and observes that the receptionclass children, who had joined the school only four weeks before the inspection, had been shown how to get along with others. The inspector praises the way the school encourages children’s personal development, using activities beyond the curriculum.

Headteacher Annie Smart with pupils After looking in detail at reading, maths and history, Ms Thomas concludes: l Teachers are well trained to deliver the phonics programme and as a result children develop a secure knowledge of phonics; l In mathematics, teachers carefully check

pupils’ understanding, and appropriate support or challenge is swiftly put in place; l There are gaps in pupils’ historical knowledge. Subject leaders need to identify the key concepts pupils must know and remember across the curriculum. Headteacher Annie Smart said: “There are many strengths to celebrate in the report and we are proud to continue to be recognised as a ‘good’ school. “Our one identified area for improvement is for staff and pupils to better articulate the knowledge and skills that we want children to learn and remember in History. We have already taken steps to strengthen this area of our curriculum.” Chandag Infant School was last inspected in 2014, when it was also rated good. This was the first inspection since the school joined the multi-academy trust now known as Futura Learning Partnership in 2017. Andrea Arlidge, chief executive of the trust, said: “Congratulations to Chandag Infant School on earning a judgement of good from Ofsted. We are delighted that the inspector has recognised this excellent provision for some of our youngest learners. At Futura, we build for the future by ensuring a high-quality educational experience for children and young people of all ages.”

Christmas celebrations Campaigners keep up fight over digester plant A DEVELOPER is pressing ahead with plans to build a digester power plant near Keynsham. Resourceful Energy Anaerobic Limited (REAL) is hoping to win approval from Bath and North East Somerset Council, which has set a new target decision date of December 17. REAL has submitted revised information in support of its scheme to counter the hundreds of objections raised by local people. More than 600 objections were raised in the first phase of consultation, which closed earlier this year. A second phase, in response to the developer’s revised information, closed on November 15. People have expressed concerns about increased noise, pollution, smell, poor health and a massive increase in HGV journeys to bring waste from across England and Wales to the former Queen Charlton Quarry in Charlton Field Lane. Protect Our Keynsham Environment (POKE) is seeking more funds to commission expert opinion to fight the scheme. Group spokeswoman Kerry Morgan said: “We’re aware that the power plant developer has now submitted further documentation to Bath and North East Somerset Council.” In reference to the COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow, Kerry added: “It’s important to remember that anaerobic digesters like this are part of the climate emergency problem, not the solution.” Visit www.protectourkeynshamenvironment.wordpress.com for more information about POKE.

St Francis Church in Keynsham is planning something for everybody this Christmas. The celebrations start on Sunday December 19 at 6pm with a carol service at the church in Warwick Road. The event, for children and their families, will include refreshments. The Christingle service on Christmas Eve will culminate (weather permitting) with everyone standing outside in the dark with just candles for light.

St John’s Church in Keynsham is preparing to welcome visitors to its Christmas tree festival, which will showcase 45 trees decorated by community groups. Opening times are as follows: Fri Dec 3, 3pm-8pm; Sat Dec 4, 10am to 6pm; Sun Dec 5: 12pm-5pm. Entry is free. Pictured above, the church during last Christmas tree festival in 2019.

We're so glad to be neighbours again

TWO Keynsham women who were neighbours for more than 20 years are now neighbours in the same care home. Sue Montgomery and Ruth Pryce lived in neighbouring apartments in Dragons Hill Court and are now living next door to each other in St Monica Trust’s Charterhouse Care Home. Former midwife Sue was one of the first residents to move into Charterhouse’s residential care unit when it opened in 2019. Ruth was a regular visitor to Charterhouse to see her old friend and when the time came for her to move into a care home, there was only one place she was going to go. Charterhouse’s residential unit lead, Tunde Ujlaki, said: “Because Sue’s family lives a long way away, Ruth would visit Sue and support her with things like doctor’s appointments, shopping and taking her out on trips. “During that time Ruth got to know everyone at Charterhouse very well, so when she felt it was

time to move into a care home, we were delighted she decided to come here.” A former head teacher at a primary school in Bedminster, Ruth even has some ex-pupils among the care team at Charterhouse. “One of our occupational therapists is an old pupil of Ruth’s and she always calls her Mrs Pryce, just as she did when she was at school.” “Ruth still likes to be in

charge. She is always organising activities for her fellow residents, bringing us her ideas for the unit, organising pastoral care visits. And if there’s a birthday, she will always be the one buying a card and getting everyone to sign it.” Ruth chose her own room when she arrived and Charterhouse’s care team then supported Sue to move in next door. As well as being neighbours, Sue and Ruth attended the same church in

Saltford and have a shared love of music. They can often be found having a sing-a-long with their fellow residents around the piano or having lunch together in the open-plan kitchen. Sue said: “I feel very lucky to be here and it’s the best place for my lazy old bones. The staff are all lovely, we want for absolutely nothing and being here with Ruth is the cherry on the cake.” Ruth said: “It’s amazing that we’ve ended up living next door to each other. From the first day I visited Sue, I’ve always felt part of the community here. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Humble beginnings of our fire brigade

A

century ago, the fire-fighting equipment in a small town like Keynsham was rudimentary by today’s standards - a single pump drawn by horses and in most cases operated by hand. The parish was the body responsible for firefighting and the fire pump was housed in any convenient location – at one time the Keynsham pump was kept in a barn at the bottom of Charlton Road. However, at a parish council meeting on 13th February 1923, it was agreed to purchase the coach house at 65 High Street, which was being offered for sale, for a new fire station. A week later, the chairman reported that the bidding at the auction on the council’s behalf had run to its limit of £270 and the premises had sold to another bidder for £275. But all was not lost. The purchaser, a Mr Shepherd, later offered the premises to the council at the price he paid. It transpired that he had no use for the coach house but was previously under the impression that the council required it to build a public convenience and he objected to one so close to his house. So, on 13th March 1923, it was reported that purchase of No 65 had been agreed. At first the High Street station housed only a hose cart. If needed, a lorry was available for hire to take firemen to out-of-town fires. Within the town, the firemen were dependent on sufficient water pressure from hydrants to supply firefighting jets. All that changed in 1929 with the purchase of a Ford motor chassis on which Mulletts, a Bristol firm, built a fire tender body capable of carrying 10 men, ladders, standpipes, hose etc. At the same time a new trailer pump was purchased. These two machines served the town well until replaced by a new Leyland pump at the outbreak of the Second World War. At this time the strength of Keynsham Fire Brigade (all part-time) was 13 – all part-timers. In 1947 the Fire Services Act saw the settingup of Somerset Fire Brigade, with Keynsham being designated Station A9. It was staffed by 12 retained firemen, called out when required. Turnouts were controlled from divisional headquarters at Weston-super-Mare. If two

The first Keynsham Fire Station appliances were required then ‘over-theborder’ support was provided by the Bristol Fire Brigade from their station at Brislington. Very occasionally the Keynsham crew were needed to reinforce the Bristol brigade, most notably at a huge oil fire at Avonmouth in 1951. In the early 1960s a new Bedford fire engine was allocated to Keynsham to replace the old Leyland: it appears to have been a very tight fit in the small building. Further modernisation, in late 1965 saw, as part of the redevelopment of Temple Street, completion of a replacement

fire station, with space for two appliances and a hose-drying tower. A few years later the old building, along with the former Wiltshire’s hardware shop next door, was demolished and replaced by the modern block that is today home to Card Factory. Few would have guessed that the Temple Street Fire Station would last little longer than its predecessor, closing after exactly 50 years. We are indebted to Dennis Hill and Brian Vowles for the research on which this article is based.

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Thanks to all who will be working over Christmas IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere I go! My office has turned into a winter wonderland full of drawings of reindeer, holly and elves from talented local children entering my Christmas card competition. There is a definite chill in the air. In our local shopping streets beautiful store window displays tempt us in, while carols bring much-needed cheer. And I keep thinking, as I do every single year, I really must get a move on with my Christmas shopping! Christmas is a truly magical time for many. As a child I remember being so excited to find out what Father Christmas had left for me and my brother and sisters. My best ever present was when I was nearly four and got a red ride-on Tri-ang Puff Puff train. I had seen it in a shop window and instantly fell in love. But I also knew it was too big an ask, as it was far too expensive, and I was told that it wouldn’t become mine. So when it was there under the tree on Christmas day it was the most exciting day of my life and it still is! When I was a bit older it remained trains

for me! Christmas was a waiting game to see what extra bits I might get for my Hornby train set. I loved the Brunswick green Great Western Railway engines and their chocolate and cream coaches. Sometimes I’d get some track and points in my stocking or tiny model passengers for the station and trackside. As you can tell, I was super keen on great public transport systems even back then! Nowadays it’s my working cocker spaniel Angel that makes my Christmas special. She loves long walks, her toy pheasant, and best of all, sausages! Boxing Day is obviously a big deal too – I often go to Ashton Gate with my fellow Bristol City fans, and winning hopefully means vital bragging rights over my Rovers mates! For some, Christmas doesn’t mean time off and I’d like to thank our amazing NHS staff, our firefighters and police, those working in retail at their busiest time of the year, and our posties who sort and deliver all the mail. A sincere thank you goes to everyone who works over Christmas! A special Christmas wish also goes to those

who are spending the holiday alone – perhaps because of fate or circumstance, or maybe because they have lost a cherished partner. If this is you, you will be particularly in my thoughts. It’s also a time for New Year’s resolutions, but as I’ve got the best job ever, mine is simple. In 2022 I want to really put the brilliant West of England even more firmly on the national and global map and ensure our region thrives. So from Angel and me, we wish you and your family the happiest of Christmases, and a peaceful, healthy and prosperous New Year. See you in 2022.

PLANS to rejuvenate Temple Street are currently being developed. This photograph give a flavour of the shops that existed on Temple Street in the early 1950s, before the supermarkets arrived. There were several grocer’s and one was Grimes, just next to the junction with Rock Road. Last month, our photograph showed Reynolds, another grocer’s at the opposite end of the High Street. We have been asked to make clear that when the replacement concrete building was completed on this site, it was first occupied by Organ and Davies Furniture and Soft Furnishing Store, prior to the occupation by Midland Bank.

Residents meet the local police Trevor Wilmot of Neighbourhood Watch, Councillor Duncan Hounsell, and PCSOs Lee Hicks and Stuart Quinn RESIDENTS got the chance to meet their local police officers at an event at Saltford Hall. Keynsham beat team PSCOs Lee Hicks and Stuart Quinn answered questions on issues such as inconsiderate parking, speeding, and the level of police patrols. Wider issues raised by those attending included women’s safety, youth violence in Bath, and funding levels for the police. Residents were advised about setting up their own Community Speed Watch schemes, and how

best to report issues to the police. Guidance included making calls to 101 (999 in an emergency), which go to all members of the Keynsham beat team for awareness and response. The PCSOs also gave out free personal security items such as mini all-purpose alarms and anti-theft bag bells. Trevor Wilmot, Avon and Somerset Police’s Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Scheme administrator, stated that membership of NHW schemes in Saltford was buoyant.

He added that being part of a NHW scheme statistically reduces the chances of becoming a victim of crime by six times. The meeting was chaired by B&NES ward councillor Duncan Hounsell at the invitation of the parish council, which hosts the annual event. Another of the speakers was ward councillor Alastair Singleton - also B&NES Council’s representative on Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Panel – who spoke about the role of the panel.

Community centre award A KEYNSHAM charity has received an award from the Royal Horticultural Society. Community at 67, in Queens Road, has been assessed as ‘outstanding’ in the society’s It’s Your Neighbourhood category. The judges recognised the important contribution the charity makes to the local community and said the planters along the front of the shops make a real difference to the area. They congratulated the trustees and volunteers on their achievements during a very difficult period. “We are really pleased with this award,” said Matin Burton, chair of trustees. “It is great to see the centre delivering activities for all ages - children, teenagers and adults. We are really grateful to the volunteers who tend and care for the plants, which brighten up the rank of shops.” Community at 67 runs a café on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

What are the songs you and your family grew up with? Bridging Histories is inviting people across the Bristol region to join in activities and share what they make. They are asking families, schools and workplaces to get involved in exploring what makes Bristol tick. Groups across Bristol have already been getting stuck in. Barton Hill History Group is creating new heritage trails. At Hoo Haw Children’s Art Festival, Scrapstore and Bristol Beacon created a Bristol skyline and got kids filling it with their own monuments. People have shared poems and their history. Dr Joanna Burch-Brown, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Bristol is part of the team behind the Bridging Histories project. They are looking to get as many people as possible involved. She said: “We especially love seeing activities that bring people together across the generations. It helps us be connected and gain a perspective we could never get on our own.” “We are coming through the pandemic having grown and changed, and we are learning so much more about each other as a city.” “Over the summer nearly 14,000 people shared their views on the future of the Colston statue and plinth.” “This is a great moment for us to come together across the city and region, to connect over food, dip into our history, and get inspired to make positive change for the future.”

We’d like you to be part of a citywide project called Bridging Histories We’re inviting people of all ages, political views, and social groups to join in 6 activities and share what they make. We’re offering £100-£300 for you to run events getting people sharing recipes and stories, street history, family history, ‘I am from’ poetry, monument detectives and changemaking. We've scored £20,000 for good causes KEYNSHAM Walking Football Club is celebrating a milestone in its charitable efforts. Recent donations of £2,000 to local hospices bring the total raised over the last four years to £20,000. Support for good causes has continued despite the club losing about six months of playing time due to the pandemic and nearly a year when social events and fundraising were highly restricted. It recently handed over £1,000 each to Children’s Hospice South West and the Jessie May hospice at home charity, to bring its joint giving to these two causes to £5,600. Its first charitable event was a Christmas dance in 2017. It raised £6,000, which was split equally between Cancer Research UK and MacMillan Cancer Support, following the death of valued club member Harry Curran. In 2018, another £1,500 was raised and split between national and local charities - Prostate Cancer UK, Saltford and Keynsham Dementia Alliance, and Keynsham and District Dial a Ride, which the club uses to travel to its away league fixtures. In 2019 the club gave £1,300 to CALM – the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) – which helps to combat suicide. Over the years, other good causes that have been supported include the Elim Church of Keynsham’s Shoebox Appeal, Romanian CSA Camp, UBH Maternity Hospital, Teenage Cancer Trust, Muscular Dystrophy, In the Bag (testicular cancer), Bristol Frame Football, the Oscar Cridge appeal and Nathan Curnock sponsorship.

A PROJECT to support pollinating insects by improving wildlife habitats has been launched in Saltford. The parish council started the initiative, called Saltford Wildflower Project: All You Seed is Love, to coincide with the COP26 international climate change conference. The aim is to help pollinating insects by creating new habitats – or enhancing existing ones – throughout Saltford. Wildflower areas can be created at the end of residential roads, in small open spaces, roadside verges, by the river – anywhere that Bath & North East Somerst Council (the landowner) agrees. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

A year of remarkable effort and sacrifice AS we approach the end of another year, I want to reflect on the last seven months of being your PCC. It’s been a whirlwind and there are numerous achievements since being appointed that the team and I are proud of. I’m lucky enough to have met with officers, staff, local people, community groups and organisations across Avon and Somerset, and have gained an understanding of their concerns and views around policing and crime in their area. I will continue to meet with communities, MPs and councillors every Friday to ensure we are working in collaboration for our communities. I’m also proud to be the PCC lead for economic and cyber crime, including fraud: one in ten people fall victim to fraud and it is because of such statistics I was

inspired to take on this role. I will continue to work at a local, regional and national level to raise the profile of this lifedestroying crime, and get a grip of it to protect vulnerable people from harm. Following a rigorous selection process, I’m also delighted to announce my preferred chief constable candidate – Sarah Crew. At the time of writing this column, I am waiting for the Police and Crime Panel hearing to take place on November 25, where I will seek confirmation of appointment of my preferred candidate. At the start of this process, I said I was looking for a robust and innovative chief constable, who is able to inspire their workforce, and Sarah has a proven track record of strong and effective leadership. The police officers and staff in Avon and Somerset are

dedicated and hard-working, and I believe that Sarah can enhance their considerable efforts and skills. Moving on, I want to take a moment to reflect on the start of the year, which was a difficult time for all of us as we entered another lockdown. During this time – and still to this day – I was blown away by the remarkable efforts of local people and the sacrifices you made. Unfortunately, as we enter the winter, coronavirus cases continue to increase and it is a stark reminder that the virus is still out there. Although the vast majority of the population are vaccinated and many are receiving their booster jab, please continue to exercise caution over the coming months. Finally, I want to thank the police, NHS and other emergency and volunteer services who

With Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford will be working over the festive season to ensure local people and communities are safe. It’s always a busy time of year for those who work in the emergency services, and their work does not go unrecognised. I wish you all the best with your celebrations and may you have a safe, happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

Free Saturday parking to boost trade FREE parking on Saturdays in council-owned car parks during December is being offered to encourage people to ‘shop local’ in Keynsham High Street. Public realm improvements in the High Street have been delayed by complex ground conditions and difficulty in getting construction supplies. To avoid further hold-ups, they are continuing into December. Work is expected to shut down in mid-December and restart on January 4. The High Street will stay closed to traffic during the shutdown for safety reasons. Councillor Richard Samuel, deputy leader and cabinet member for economic development & resources, said: “Until recently, phase one was on track for a substantial completion ahead of the Christmas embargo. However,

due to unforeseen construction issues and complications with utilities, this now not possible. “The haulage crisis has also created additional delays. To stop works for our usual Christmas embargo would extend the construction programme, creating further disruption for residents and traders. The continuation of works into December enables the project to be completed as soon as possible.

“Due to the exceptional circumstances, we are offering free parking in Keynsham car parks every Saturday in December to make it easier for residents and visitors to shop local and support the fantastic range of local shops, specialist retailers, cafés and restaurants in Keynsham.” The major works to improve Keynsham High Street and revitalise the town centre began

on June 1. Both sides of the street are now substantially paved in new materials along with new drainage and street lighting installed. In January, construction will resume to complete the final sections of the scheme. Traffic management will be required to upgrade the pelican crossing and improve the highway arrangement at the High Street/ Bath Hill junction. The council continues to work with the Rock Road development’s contractors to find an opportunity for the sewer works to be done at a time that minimises the impact on people accessing Keynsham and does not delay the High Street programme. ne of the main diary dates in the Scouting calendar is Remembrance Day, with members of 1st Keynsham Scouts representing the group at the parade through Keynsham High Street. The Sixers from Quantock Cubs - Isobel, Henry, Harry and Rohan - were invited to represent the pack at the church service at St John’s beforehand, and they did an outstanding job. It was really encouraging to see such a turnout at the parade, especially since there was no parade last year.

There is a long history between Scouts and Remembrance, and we know from our own archive that many 1st Keynsham Scouts have fought and died in war. Scouts also played a key role on the home front during both world wars, by supporting the coastguard, acting as bicycle messengers and more. Around 84,000 former Scouts and adult volunteers also served in the armed forces during the First World War, and 8,000 of them lost their lives. It’s these, and all others who served in conflicts, that we remember.

How GP practices are working now Your GP practice has been open and working hard throughout the pandemic. To keep you and our staff safe we are offering phone and video consultations so you only come into the surgery when you need to.

I wanted to see my GP, why am I seeing someone else?

Why do receptionists ask personal questions?

Not everyone needs to see a GP. Practices have a range of expert healthcare professionals such as nurses, pharmacists and physios. You’ll see the right person for your condition as quickly as possible.

Our trained reception staff need to ask questions to make sure you see the best person in the practice. Everything you tell them is treated strictly confidentially.

Why can’t I have a face-to-face appointment?

Where else can I get help?

We still have to control the risk of infection in our surgeries. Phone and video consultations help keep you and our staff safe and let us treat more patients each day. You will always be seen face-to-face if you need to.

Visit www.nhs.uk for advice on common symptoms or speak to your local pharmacist. For minor injuries or urgent care when your GP is closed visit 111.nhs.uk. Always call 999 in a life-threatening emergency.

Waste of time

SOMEONE I know who runs a business in Temple Street told me recently that he’s not at all impressed with B&NES council, stating that no one listens. Temple Street sadly is well forgotten, when it could be transformed with a Carnaby Streetstyle theme and added attractions for people to venture to. The main body of the High Street is sadly surrounded by hair salons, with a new salon going into the old Savannah tattoo parlour. Charity shops outweigh any new retail outlets. Anyone can see that drastic changes needs to happen. Andrew John Davy l Editor’s note: The Savannah Studios tattoo parlour has moved to Temple Street.

On page 3 of your November issue we are invited to have our say about the 'renaissance' of Temple Street. We can then turn to page 5 (‘Flats approved – but shop dropped’) to see why having our say is a complete waste of time. I've lost count of the number of times various plans have been put out to consultation, only for the views of respondents to be ignored. It would seem that those responsible for the decision making are content to pay only lip service to the views of the public. AFTER reading in Keynsham Voice about the plans to close Temple Street and make it just the same as the High Street, I think it will stop even more people from visiting Keynsham, as the money should've been spent on thinking of a multistorey car park. The range of shops has dwindled, we have too many coffee shops, but we will have no customers. When Bath becomes a clean-air zone, people would like to drive out and visit Keynsham, for ease of parking and a variety of interesting shops, but there won't be any! I moved here from Bath in 1982, and used to be proud of the town, but now feel left behind and don't recognise the place. Please reconsider this - it needs looking at before the decision is made. RECENTLY we have seen the shameful spectacle of Conservative MPs voting to scrap Parliament’s Standards system and safeguards in favour of a new regime they proposed to design. Their aim was to get one of their own number – Owen Patterson – off the hook and weaken a Standards system that they seem to find uncomfortably independent. The startling U-turn that followed was all the more woeful for being prompted by critical headlines and the furious public backlash, rather than any pretence of pangs of conscience. A strong, independent Standards regime is essential in preventing toxic sleaze and corruption in Parliament, and in maintaining public trust. MPs should not try to weaken safeguards or ‘mark their own homework’ in this way. Our local MP, Jacob Rees-Mogg, had a starring role in the whole sorry affair. As the government’s representative, he broadcast the message that it’s fine to break the rules, because the rules can just be changed. Local constituents deserve better than this. It drags our politics through the mud and is something you’d expect to see in Putin’s Russia rather than the home of parliamentary democracy. We know Mr Rees-Mogg loves obscure words, so (with thanks to Susie Dent) here is a new one for him to consider: ‘malversation’, which is defined as ‘the corrupt administration of power’. Mencap quiz is a success

KEYNSHAM Mencap is celebrating the success of its first quiz night in over two years. The event attracted 82 people to Saltford Hall. They answered questions on sport, music, general knowledge and TV, and enjoyed a ploughman’s supper. Fundraiser Amanda Leonard said: “This was our first independent fundraising event since the start of the pandemic and so we really did not know what to expect. The total raised was just under £1,000, which was just superb.” Keynsham Mencap is independently financed and has been running for over 40 years, providing social opportunities for 150 people from the Bristol and Bath area with learning disabilities and complex needs including autism. The charity’s

work is essential in reducing isolation, facilitating friendships, building confidence and increasing self-esteem. Amanda said: “We took a hit with Covid so it is great news that we can now start up our diverse range of physical fundraising events that will appeal to most people.” Keynsham Mencap will benefit from two community Christmas events - a craft fair

at the Key Centre on Saturday November 27, 10am-2pm, and a Christmas market shopping event at The Wine Bar on Saturday December 4, 12pm-8pm. Its next event is the Music Man Project Christmas concert on Sunday December 12, 4pm6pm, at Manvers Street Church in Bath. Admission is free, with a retiring collection. Tickets must booked – go to www.tickettailor.com and

search for ‘Music Man Project Keynsham Christmas Concert’. Then on Saturday March 26 next year, the black-tie, dinner and auction event will return at the Apex Hotel in Bath. Tables and sponsorship opportunities are still available at the charity’s biggest fundraiser of the year. For more details of any of Keynsham Mencap’s events, email amanda@ keynshammencap.org.uk

Delights of a cold and frosty morning

Frosty mornings provide a showcase for winter species Photos: Rita Andrews

KEYNSHAM

Is your arm not long enough?

If you’re over 40, get your near vision checked

ecember is a month where winter sets in and thoughts turn to Christmas. The clear frosty mornings are great for a walk in the park or along the river. Hoar frost decorates the leaves of evergreen plants and spiders' webs, and with luck a sighting of gold crest, song thrush, robin, or even a kingfisher rewards the quiet onlooker. In our gardens, the feeders become important food sources for a variety of birds, so remember to keep these clean and filled at this time of year when wild food is less abundant. The berries and fruits of plants such as holly and ivy still provide some food for over-wintering birds, and acorns, hazelnuts, conkers and sweet chestnuts are available to the grey squirrels hoarding food for the harder times to come. There are many species we associate with Christmas, from folklore and latterly from being used in carols and Christmas songs. n Holly (Ilex aquifolium). Since mediaeval times, holly has been gathered at Christmas to decorate churches and houses, the bloodred berries supposedly offering protection from evil. Only some trees bear fruit because each tree is either male or female, a condition known as dioecious. All hollies have small scented white flowers in spring, but only female trees develop berries which ripen in winter. The male plants are still important for providing pollen. Blackbirds and thrushes are particularly fond of holly berries. n Ivy (Hedera helix). Clinging to a supporting tree or wall, ivy is one of the few native climbing plants to reach any great size. It flowers in autumn and produces abundant nectar for pollinating wasps and flies. The fruits develop in winter,

with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group and are important food for birds throughout the season. The use of ivy as a Christmas decoration arose through superstition that, with holly, it protected against malicious house goblins! n Mistletoe (Viscum album). Found growing in rounded tufts up to a metre across, mainly on deciduous trees such as poplar, willow, lime and apple, this plant is a semi-parasite. It sinks specialised roots into the host tissues from which it absorbs some nutrients, but it also produces food in its own leaves by photosynthesis. Like holly, it has male and female flowers on separate plants and only female plants produce the sticky white berries. The ritual of kissing under the mistletoe has gone on for thousands of years. n Robin (Erithacus rubecula). Featured on many Christmas cards, the robin is one of Britain's favourite birds. Male and female adults look the same, but the young have speckled brown plumage, and lack the red breast until they moult in autumn. During winter months, males and females have separate territories which they defend aggressively. Some robins remain in the UK throughout the year, but some migrate to southern Europe for winter, while others arrive here from northern Europe to spend the winter in our milder climate. Robins sing throughout the year, the song becoming stronger, faster and more vigorous around Christmas.

This month, Keynsham group will be back to meeting in person at the Keynsham Baptist Church Hall. A Christmas Cracker on Friday December 10, 7.30pm, will comprise two short talks by members Keynsham’s Watery World with Dave Sage and Rita Andrews, and Wildlife Photography in Florida with Kathy Farrell. Save land to save species

any of us are concerned about our carbon footprint, especially after flying abroad. Something definitely worth considering is making a financial donation to the World Land Trust. Keynsham Group of Avon Wildlife Trust were fortunate to hear all about the charity from the inspiring Charlotte Beckham (no relation to David!), who has spent most of her adult life working for them. The importance of this global organisation, based in the UK, is best summed up by patron Sir David Attenborough: “To save species you must save ecosystems, and to save ecosystems, you must save land.” This is without doubt a key part of what has emerged from the recent COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. Habitat destruction, deforestation, mining and the continued increase in burning of fossil fuels are causing long-term damage to the planet, which is likely to affect us all. WLT’s aim is to reverse the trends of habitat destruction by focusing on land conservation and (crucially)

NEWS

working with local communities to ensure they fully understand the need to do so, becoming key stakeholders in land conservation in their area. WLT oversees many projects globally, in Central & South America, East Africa, India and Malaysia. The simple idea of acquiring and protecting land from development - urban expansion, mining, cattle ranching, soya plantations, timber extraction and forest fires - is proving very

effective in many parts of the world, and Charlotte outlined a number of case studies where land acquisition has successfully restored damaged or lost ecosystems and the species they support. In Belize, over the last 30 years, a large rainforest reserve has remained undamaged, and the benefits in terms of offsetting carbon emissions cannot be overstated. The trees, other vegetation and the soil are vast carbon sinks which absorb and lock away the carbon from atmospheric carbon dioxide. Similarly, in Sabah, northern Borneo, orangutan corridors are being developed, with the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary boasting 612 species, including proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants. Reforestation - replanting many thousands of rainforest trees - is well established in the region now that its importance has been recognised. The first two of the “10 golden rules of tree planting” are: Protect existing forest first, and Put local people at the heart of tree planting projects. These people become

custodians of their land, derive income and resources from it, and value the importance of conserving it for future generations. These projects will only work if they are sustainable long-term, and this is much more likely if local populations run them. WLT’s role is to facilitate this. Charlotte also explained about the Andean corridor in Peru, where people in the lowlands pay for their water (used for irrigation as well as domestic use) and this revenue is used to maintain upland rainforests, allowing continuing sustainable supply of clean freshwater. Similarly the Atlantic rainforest in Brazil and the Laguna Grande in Guatemala are examples of success stories thanks to the input of WLT. The latter has over 700 species, including manatees, ocelot and many migrant warbler species. So, if you really want to offset your carbon footprint, make a meaningful donation to the World Land Trust so it can continue to save land for future generations www.worldlandtrust.org Dave Sage chair, Keynsham Group

Tribute to Normandy veteran

A FUNERAL directors in Keynsham has honoured a local hero in its tribute to Remembrance Day. The team at L.J. Guyan created a window display in memory of Kenneth Turner, a Normandy veteran whose funeral they organised last November while in contact with Mr Turner’s son Paul. Funeral arranger Filippa Bellaccomo said: “I remember just being totally in awe of the stories Paul Turner was telling me about his late father. I thought to myself last year that a window display in remembrance of the Bristol Normandy Veterans would be very fitting. “I've never forgotten the late Mr Turner and was ever so grateful to Paul for allowing me to use such personal items.”

The Remembrance Day window was due to remain on display at L.J. Guyan, part of Dignity Funerals, in Charlton Road until Tuesday November 30.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Fr Matt Anscombe Parish priest of St Dunstan’s, Keynsham, and St Bernadette’s, Whitchurch

can unite us at this time of year ‘ What is our desire for the peace and love

A

for the whole of humanity which go with the Christmas story.

t this time of year, wherever we go, inevitably we will hear plenty of Christmas tunes. I often feel that a thought needs to be spared for those working in shops, where the loop of Christmas music goes round and round. I think it would drive me crazy! I remember speaking to a shop assistant last year, who said that she managed to block it out, so perhaps there are techniques to let it wash over you. Do they Know it’s Christmas?, Last Christmas, Fairytale of New York, White Christmas – there are lots of classic Christmas ballads that we hear over and over again. They help to get us in the spirit of the season but often end up as “earworms” circling our brains. One of the most popular Christmas songs

of all time is Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You, which was first released in 1994. It’s a really up-tempo love song, including bell chimes from Santa’s sleigh and that wonderful voice with its incredible vocal range. The song starts: “I don’t want a lot for Christmas, there is just one thing I need. I don’t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree.” All the trappings of Christmas are not really important, love is what matters. Holding the lover trumps the trimmings of the festivities. “I just want you for my own, more than you could ever know. Make my wish come true. All I want for Christmas is you.” For Christians, the spirit of this season is all about recognising the love that God has for us. This love is shown through the birth of

Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe to be true God and true man. Jesus comes into the world to show how God embraces the whole of humanity and seeks to bring us peace and reconciliation. So, for Christians, it is easy to say to God, “All we want for Christmas is you.” We recognise, though, that many do not believe, or struggle with belief, or are adherents to other religions. Hopefully, though, what can unite us at this time of year is our desire for the peace and love for the whole of humanity which go with the Christmas story. So when we hear that song, perhaps we can substitute the “you” at the end of the title with “peace” or “love” and spare a thought or a prayer for all peoples. Happy Christmas!

TALENTED young performers from Keynsham took to the stage for a spectacular show in London’s West End. Students from the Stagecoach Bristol Keynsham performing arts school took part in Stagecoach’s Showcase at the Shaftesbury Theatre on November 14. Many of the students missed out on performing on the stage after the 2020 show was postponed because of the pandemic. Earlier in 2021, Stagecoach students were the first to perform at the Shaftesbury Theatre after 14 months. A total of 160 students from 10 schools took part in the test event, which hailed the return of live theatre to stages across the UK. The Keynsham school was among 32 schools performing in the showcase, with many travelling hundreds of miles across the UK.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH

33

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Widowland C.J. Carey The idea of this book is intriguing and makes for a very good modern thriller. It is set in 1953, coronation year – but not the coronation of Elizabeth II but of King Edward and Queen Wallis. Thirteen years have passed since an alliance was formed between Britain and Germany. Society is segregated into castes. The status of women is particular affected, but the lowest of low are widows, who are ordered to live in a rundown area called Widowland. We meet Rose Ransom, who works in the Ministry of Culture and is a member of the elite caste. So when disturbing graffiti appears, with lines from forbidden literature, Rose is sent to Widowland to investigate. The book is in the same vein as The Man in the High Castle and Fatherland, but I particularly liked the story from women’s perspectives, and it is well written with excellent characters. Adult Non-Fiction

Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas Adam Kay reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library assistant If you haven’t yet read Adam Kay’s bestseller This is Going to Hurt, you should give it a go before trying

this one. Kay was training as an NHS doctor when he decided to use his observation notes from his work shifts to make a book. Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas compiles the festive experiences from birth to death. It explains how it is rare for NHS staff to get time off during Christmas and New Year. And when a colleague comes to give you a rest from a 24-hour shift, you truly believe in miracles and call them angel. You can read it in one go, trusting Kay to move you from laugher to tears in only few pages. Maybe it’s a way to give an homage to the fantastic services the NHS provides 24/7 and remind us how lucky we are to have them.

Gluten-free Christmas Hannah Miles Just because someone has an allergy to wheat or has coeliacs does not mean they cannot enjoy delicious pastries or desserts at Christmas. Hannah Miles has devised traditional feasts that no one will notice are gluten-free. They include mince pies with pistachio mincemeat, chestnut forcemeat stuffing balls and a gluten-free

traditional Great Grandma’s Christmas pudding. All the recipes look mouthwatering – one of my favourites is the chocolate log – and the author also shows a good selection of sauces and gravies. Enjoy! Children's Fiction

The Snow Queen Geraldine McCaughrean A wintry, classic tale from Hans Christian Andersen, retold by Geraldine McCaughrean. The book is also beautifully illustrated with gorgeous silhouettes. It tells the tale of Greda and her adventure to try to find her best friend Kai, who has been taken by the beautiful but cruel Snow Queen. She battles robbers, puzzles and wolves, but help is always at hand in the shape of some reindeers. Very Christmassy!

Santa’s Secret Agents Steve Gunning & Chris Wheeler This delightful book was written and illustrated by two local writers. As we all know, Father Christmas has to be sure that children are on either the naughty or nice list, and he employs a huge army of elves to help him. They are a sneaky lot and use many ways to check up – they are Santa’s Secret Agents! From playtime in the garden, to holidays and Halloween and even under the sea (as they are excellent

swimmers) they are on the lookout for any mischievous behaviour. Follow the story of their adventures – have a look out on every page and see if you can spot any elves.

Help us to prevent suicide A CHARITY set up to help people considering suicide is looking for more volunteers. Suicide Prevention Bristol (SPB) offers a national phone line for people who are struggling, as well as patrol teams who engage with vulnerable people. Its office has recently moved to near Warmley and the charity is appealing for new call handlers who can spare some time to help others. The helpline is a 24-hour, national service manned by volunteer call handlers offering support to callers who are vulnerable, distressed, or want to end their lives. They handle up to 300 calls a day Summer Harris, who lives locally, has been a volunteer for six months

Jessica Williams

and trains the call handlers, in addition to them receiving external training. She said: “I’ve always worked in health and social care and I got involved because I wanted to be part of a unique charity who are on the front line saving lives. “SPB is such a warm and welcoming community to volunteer with.” Patrol volunteers walk around at night to try and spot people who are struggling with their mental health and offer them support. The patrols take place from 9pm to 3am, four days a week. For more details about how to volunteer, email info@spbristol. org. The National Suicide Prevention Helpline number is 0800 689 5652.

Treat for art lovers VISITORS flocked to the first Cam Valley Arts Trail since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The event even received a visit from a guide dog in training, Davey the labradoodle. The line-up consisted of 35 artists and crafts people, and the demonstrations attracted appreciative comments. Jacki, who was among those who attended the glass demonstration, said: “Very instructive and interesting, thank you.” And a sketchbook exploration by Karen George attracted the remark: “Fascinating, I enjoyed relating it to my process in song-writing.” The arts trail group hopes to hold a workshop in early spring, followed by its usual spring sale and exhibition. To keep up to date with events, you can follow the arts trail on Facebook or Instagram, or visit www.camvalleyartstrail. co.uk

SALTFORD TENNIS CLUB

Finals winners celebrate after tough battles

SALTFORD Tennis Club held the finals of their annual competitive and enjoyable in-house tournaments during October and November. Both days were blessed with good weather and fantastic tennis. The competitions are free and open to all members and abilities, with the aim of getting as many members involved as possible. This year there were 56 entrants, which was a 24% increase on last year’s figure. The rounds leading up to finals were keenly contested over the summer season and all finals were closely fought, with both the ladies’ and mixed doubles producing two highly entertaining tie-breaks. Simon Perkins had a very successful tournament, winning the men’s singles for a third year by beating Andy May, and finally winning a doubles title with his partner Lou Bessell, who was a “rusty racket” and joined the club this year. Simon and Lou beat Ellie Baldock and Lucas Richards in a third-set decider in what was probably the best match of the tournament. Neil Willey, the men’s club captain, and Andy May won the men’s doubles, beating Lucas

KEYNSHAM RUGBY

Getting to grips - Keynsham's victorious home match against Crediton

December, 2021

Thrilling spectacle THERE are sixix first-team matches to report this month. Firstly the lads travelled the short distance to Thornbury RFC. The omens were bad when they failed to gather the first kick-off, and a series of other mistakes followed, culminating with an intercept try when they had secured a foothold in the Thornbury 22. But by 25 minutes they had edged ahead 8-7 thanks to a penalty from Sam Challenger and a try by skipper Hayden Johnson. This lead was to be short-lived as the home side went ahead 12-7, and there it stayed until half time. Joe Wright took over propping duties from Phil Harvey at the break. Six minutes into the second half, Keynsham edged in front again. This followed a powerful scrum some 10 metres out and was claimed by Callum Fennell, Challenger’s kick rebounding from the upright. A fabulous team try by Thornbury was their riposte, giving them a 17-13 lead. Alex Hill joined the fray for the injured Dan Moody.

The home side went a further 7 points ahead after a converted try. Joe Clements came off the bench for Al Linton at this stage. Keynsham closed the gap while the home side were down to 14 players via a try by Josh Woodman and conversion by Challenger, to bring Keynsham within striking distance of a win or at least a losing bonus point at 24-20. Thornbury though had the last laugh, securing their own bonus point with a converted try in the last play of the game. Bridgwater & Albion came to the Crown Fields the following week. Both sides tried to play an open and expansive game, despite the persistent deluge. Keynsham went ahead from a try by Lewis Button, and Bridgwater replied with a penalty. The Black and Ambers went further ahead with a Challenger penalty. A further penalty by Challenger, a converted try by the visitors and an intercept try by Hill, converted by Challenger, brought the half time score to 18-10.

KEYNSHAM RUGBY

as fast-paced team goes on the attack They surged further ahead 25-10 at the start of the second half thanks to a try by Woodman and the conversion. A bonus point victory and a simple win looked on the cards, but the visitors had other ideas. A fracas or melee took place after 20 minutes, resulting in a red card for a Keynsham player and a yellow for one of the visitors, and Keynsham were under the cosh for the last 20 minutes. All the visitors could manage was a converted try, and the home side hung on by the skin of their teeth. There was a humdinger of a local derby the following week at Chew. Perfect conditions, and two sides committed to open rugby went toe-to-toe. The season’s results thus far had indicated that Chew should win by 30-odd points, but the boys had other ideas. They seemed to take Chew by surprise with their ferocity in the tackle and the speed with which they transferred the ball, alongside some astute kicking from hand - so much so that they led 12-0 after just 10 minutes through tries by Button and John Pearce and a conversion by Hill. A penalty and a rather fortuitous converted try, plus a second try, put the home side three points ahead, but a Hill penalty brought the scores level at half time, 15 apiece. It seemed that Keynsham had shot their bolt as within 15 minutes of the re-start the home side had gone 13 points clear and had generally dominated. But the last 20 minutes were

More action from Keynsham first team's game against Crediton Keynsham’s. With five minutes left they were just 3 points adrift and had secured a try bonus point; scores coming from Callum Fennell and Joe Concannon. Chew held on at the end, just, for a win at 28-15. Next up, Crediton were the visitors and Keynsham got off to a flyer when Pearce ran in a longrange intercept try, converted by Challenger. Keynsham’s backline was stupendous with their tackling throughout the game, forcing Crediton into mistakes and driving them back time and time again. Keynsham scored a spectacular try after 30 minutes with the ball passing through six different players’ hands, and Ash Linton was the guy who finished it off. A penalty from Challenger finished the first half scoring - 15-0. They scored their third try when Crediton were down to 14 players, Jack Weston passing to Pearce from the base of the scrum, Pearce back to Weston to touch down, Challenger adding the conversion. The 22-0 score line did not stay

that way for long as within two minutes Crediton scored a fine try of their own. The conversion meant they were still in contention. Crediton did up their game but Keynsham’s defence remained aggressive and on the front foot, allowing them few real opportunities. Despite being a man down for a yellow card, Keynsham got their fourth and bonus point try via George Warren. The team travelled to another club, Devonport Services, who were enjoying a successful season and, again, came within a whisker of winning but had to be satisfied with just a losing bonus. They went 7-0 down after 15 minutes. Keynsham pressed hard but could not finish off nor capitalise on a one-man advantage due to a yellow card. A kickable penalty was also wide of the mark, so the first half ended with the same score line. The home side went 14-0 up halfway through the second period and five minutes later also missed a

kickable penalty. Pearce scored for Keynsham and Button converted, but from broken play Devonport notched their third converted try. Dean Weaver scored, Button converted to close the gap, but try as they might could not make any further inroads. Finally, another five-point win versus Welling followed. Keynsham led 3-0 from a Challenger penalty, then the visitors went ahead via an unconverted try. Winger Kieran Chester immediately replied for the home team with a five-pointer to restore the lead. K’s second try, a line-out catch and drive effort, was scored by Josh Woodman and converted by Challenger at the halfway stage, and five minutes later they stretched the lead to 20-5 thanks to a Concannon try. There it stayed until half time. Early in the second half the local boys got their bonus point try when Weston finished off a 10-metre scrum drive, Challenger again converting. Wellington fought back with a try after concerted pressure on K’s line to make it 27-10. Centre Ty Fakola touched down for a converted try to move it to 34-10 and the icing was put on the cake by a lastminute try from Matt Clifton. It has been really enjoyable watching the first team play this season. They and their oppositions have shown every willingness to play fast, attacking rugby. There are just two home games this month - North Petherton (Dec 4) and the return fixture versus St Austell (Dec 18).

KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB £1,500 boost for captains' charity KEYNSHAM Bowling Club members gathered in the clubhouse at the Memorial Park for a monthly coffee morning that included the presentation of the cheque to the captains' chosen charity. At the start of each bowling season, the ladies’ and gents’ captains decide on a charity to support during the year. This year it was Parkinson’s UK, as a couple of club members are suffering with the condition. Our photograph shows the ladies’ captain, Ann Newbery, handing a cheque for £1,500 to John Saunders, a member of the charity’s Bath and district branch. Keynsham Bowling Club has a proud record of raising money for charities at local and national level. In the last 10 years, it has given nearly £8,000 to such charities as 1st Keynsham Scouts, Keynsham Air Training Corps, Dorothy House Hospice, Jessie May Trust, the RICE Institute at the RUH, Abbeyfield House, the local

Dementia Alliance and Motor Neurone Disease. In the middle of the month, over 70 members visited Knowle Golf Club for the annual presentation lunch.

A total of 21 trophies – to be retained just for the year - were given to 2021 competition winners and runner-up. Another 41 small trophies were given for individuals to keep, the difference in numbers due to the fact that many competitions include more than one player e.g. triples events. A number of the main trophies have over the years been donated by club members, after whom they are named. One of these is the John Coates Trophy, and a message to the winner, Steve Coles, was sent by John, who is now in his 90s and lives in the USA. Club chairman Barrie Davies thanked Bob and Pam Edge for organising the event. During the close season, work continues on enhancing the club’s facilities. In the clubhouse, a new floor covering has been laid in the kitchen, while outside, the canopy has been extended to run the full length of the clubhouse. Mike Barrow

KEYNSHAM TOWN

The Ks keep up their impressive form KEYNSHAM Town have continued their impressive season as they remain well ensconced in the top half of the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. In a break from League action, the Ks visited Newquay, who were in the top four of the strong South West Peninsular League Premier Division, in the FA Vase First Round Proper at the end of October. Jordan Metters gave Keynsham a deserved lead with a fine strike on 28 minutes, before the hosts hit back to equalise just before half time and then took the lead straight after the break. But the Ks are made of stern stuff this season, and Dan Cottle made it 2-2 immediately with another fine finish. Unbelievably, Metters then scored again within two minutes to put the Ks 3-2 up, and despite a tense finish, they clung on for a fine victory. The reward for this win in the Second Round Proper was another away tie to high-flying Cornish outfit Liskeard Athletic, but unfortunately the game was played after this article went to press – see next month’s issue to find out how the Ks did. It was back to League action next, as neighbours Cadbury Heath visited Crown Fields for what is always a keenly contested local derby. In a seven-goal thriller, the visitors took the lead with a 30-yard screamer on 34 minutes, but Wail Hailston snaffled the equaliser just before half time. In a barnstorming second period, the Heath took the lead with a 48th minute penalty, before Hailston struck again 20 minutes later to make it 2-2. Dan Cottle then scored the game’s second

Jordan Anstey rises to head in the Ks' dramatic stoppage-time winner against Cadbury Heath wonder goal from 30 yards on 78 minutes to put the Ks 3-2 up, before more drama as the game entered injury time. First Heath equalised to make it 3-3, but within two minutes Jordan Anstey timed his run perfectly to head in the winner. A week later, third-placed Buckland Athletic travelled up to Crown Fields from South Devon. The visitors took the lead on 15 minutes with what seems to be a trend at the moment, a wonderful

strike from 30 yards out. But it was man of the moment Dan Cottle who equalised on the half hour with a low shot to make it all square at the break. Only five minutes into the second half, Cottle was at it again with another fantastic strike from outside the box to put the Ks 2-1 up. Despite a nervy last few minutes, they held on to record another victory, which underlines their status as serious contenders this season. The Ks were back on the road next, with a trip to the Dorset coast to take on Bridport. Sam Jones gave the Ks an early lead and, after a dominant first half, leading scorer Will Hailston notched his 15th goal of the season just before the break. The second half proved to be the “Dan Cottle Show”, as he

scored twice and was only denied his hat-trick by the woodwork and some brave stops by the Bridport custodian to keep the score at 4-0. These goals took Cottle’s tally to an impressive seven in only four full appearances, plus a brief substitute outing – a great start to his Keynsham career. l One of the unsung heroes at Keynsham Town FC is Richard Williams, who has been helping out for many years. Although his title is physio, a role which he has performed admirably for the club’s teams from the firsts through to under 18s, he is so much more than that. This was no more in evidence than when the Ks entertained Cadbury Heath at Crown Fields last month. As not one but two spectators were taken ill soon after the game started, Rich gave up his spot in the dugout to help the individuals concerned, spending over an hour with them until further assistance arrived. Manager John Allen said: “Rich is not just a physio to the first team at Keynsham Town. He helps in every kind of way, whether it be putting the kit out, doing the team sheet and sweeping the changing rooms before and after games. He is an amazing, irreplaceable man, who we all love and respect unmeasurably.” l Everyone at the club would like to wish their supporters and families a wonderful Christmas and prosperous New Year. In the meantime, look out for the Ks’ entry in the Christmas tree festival at St John’s Church from December 3 to 5 – you may spot some familiar faces hanging around on their tree! l Until the next issue of the Voice, you can keep up to date with club news via their website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
