Mass jab centre at Bath Racecourse A MASS coronavirus vaccination centre has opened at Bath Racecourse. All people currently eligible for a vaccine and living within a 45-minute drive of the venue are being written to with details of how to book an appointment. Any person who receives a letter will then be able to choose whether to have the vaccine at Bath Racecourse, or wait to be invited to a GP-led vaccination clinic, which could be at a GP practice or other community venue. The centre, which will be open seven days a week, has been designed to offer people who are able to travel an alternative, potentially faster, route to receiving the vaccine. A similar centre has also opened at Salisbury City Hall. Gill May, Director of Nursing and Quality, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “I’m delighted to announce the opening of these two largescale vaccination centres, which are the first of their kind in our region. “Getting these two venues up and running with the help of our community and voluntary sector partners, such as St John’s Ambulance and 3SG, will allow us to provide even more opportunities for people to get vaccinated in addition to what is already being offered at our GP-led sites. “We know that many people in line for the vaccine are still very much mobile, and also incredibly eager to be vaccinated, and we hope these new venues will help us to carry out more vaccinations and ultimately protect more families from

the heartbreak that is so often associated with coronavirus.” Details of how to book an appointment at the large-scale venues are included in the letters that are being addressed to people in the region over the age of 80. Those over the age of 70, along with frontline health and care workers, should also receive an invitation to either Bath or Salisbury in the coming weeks. People are asked not to turn up at the venues without an appointment as the vaccination staff will be unable to give the jab to any person without a prearranged vaccine slot. Dr Bruce Laurence, Director of Public Health, Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “I am thrilled that this vaccination centre is open in our area and I would like to thank the NHS and the many volunteers and other staff who have worked so hard to make it happen. “This centre will make a huge difference to our communities, saving lives, reducing pressure on the health service and, eventually, helping us all reclaim our freedoms.” Liam Johnson, Executive Director of Bath Racecourse, said: “We are really pleased to work with Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group to assist them in using our facilities to deliver vaccinations. “We hope that this will be of benefit to many people around the community.” For more information about the rollout of the coronavirus vaccine across Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire, visit www.bswccg. nhs.uk.

Coronavirus test centre at Scout HQ

A NEW walk-through Covid-19 testing site is set to open at 1st Keynsham Scouts’ headquarters in Ashton Way. The initiative is part of the Government’s UK-wide drive to continue to improve the accessibility of coronavirus testing for local communities. The Scout group have agreed for the Department of Health and Social Care to use their main building as a testing centre. Work to adapt the building was continuing on Monday January 25, as the Voice went to press, in preparation for its imminent opening, the date of which had not been confirmed. Those with coronavirus symptoms must book an appointment online or by calling 119, with the centre’s location off the High Street making it easily accessible without a car. Appointments will be made available each day. Len Bridges, 1st Keynsham Scouts’ chairperson, said: “This is 1st Keynsham’s way of giving something back and is a fantastic testament to the role

1st Keynsham Scouts' HQ in Ashton Way has been adapted for use as a Covid-19 testing site the Scout group plays within our community. “These are difficult times and we face real health risks. “The best thing we can do to help young people and Scouting at the moment is to help everyone get back to normality as quickly as possible.” Virtual Scouting away from the building will continue as planned. Should readers wish to donate to the Scout group in recognition of their gesture and ongoing efforts to the community, their JustGiving page is https://justgiving. com/1stkeynshamscouts.

'Don't call us, we'll call you' A DOCTORS’ surgery in Keynsham is asking patients not to phone up asking for a coronavirus vaccination appointment. St Augustine's Medical Practice, based in the Chocolate Quarter, has been inundated with enquiries, meaning that people needing urgent GP care cannot get through. Vaccinations are being made available by appointment only, starting with those aged over 80 and care home residents and staff. The practice will contact those

eligible via text asking them to call in to arrange or they will call you to make an appointment. A statement from the practice said: “In the coming weeks this will be expanded when the NHS instructs us to. Whilst we cannot give specific timeframes, we are working hard to ensure we progress as quickly as possible. “Again, if you are not in the two categories above, please do not call to make enquiries. “We must keep phone lines free so that we can continue with our day-to-day work and book those eligible quickly.”

Thanks for supporting our appeal!

A CHRISTMAS appeal by Keynsham and District Mencap Society has raised £1,000. The festive period is usually the society’s busiest time for fundraising events, including a stall at the Winter Festival, an afternoon tea party, smaller fundraising activities at the individual clubs and finishing off with a public performance by the Music Man Project. But the pandemic meant the charity had to rethink its Christmas fundraising efforts and launch an online appeal for donations instead. Fundraiser Amanda Leonard said: “We had an overwhelming response to the appeal from the local community, who we are truly thankful to. This money will go a long way to enabling the staff and volunteers to continue to reach out to the members during these ever-challenging times.” The appeal included a platform for online donations, ‘text to donate’ schemes and voluntary donations, and was supported by

An online session for Keynsham and District Mencap Society's Music Man Project a huge social media campaign. The appeal ended on December 19 with a virtual musical performance by the Music Man Project, the charity’s music tuition group. Members performed a selection of Christmas songs and some favourites they have learned at club sessions. The virtual concert was hosted on Facebook and is available to watch on the charity’s YouTube channel. Operations manager Laura Jefferies said: “We couldn’t perform to a live audience this year, and we haven’t been able to be together to film a concert, so this year our

performance was filmed entirely via Zoom, by doorstep visits and by the musicians in their own home.” Throughout the pandemic, the Music Man Project has continued to meet on Zoom to practise and learn songs, and members managed to get together once outside at the end of the summer for a socially distanced session. The continuing Zoom meetings help to keep members connected until they can return to sessions at the usual club setting. The Music Man Project can be followed on its Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/MusicManProjectKeynsham

ON THE BEAT

The Covid effect on our emergency services

I

’m not sure I remember what normal is like. It’s a very different world for most of us since last year, with Covid-19 restrictions likely to carry on for a couple of months in one form or another. Whereas previously we were lucky, with only minimal impact on our area, it is now affecting more people locally than ever, and this in turn has a knock-on effect on all emergency responders. The local ambulance service is struggling to keep up with demand. What people forget is that this affects all of us. So if any emergency service staff are affected by Covid-19 or have come into close contact with someone affected by the virus, they then have to isolate, which means staffing is reduced. And believe it or not, there is not an infinite number of emergency staff waiting to be wheeled out when needed! The rules are that travel and exposure to the outside world are limited to what is essential. We have had a number of reported

with PC James Evans breaches where people are driving to beauty spots. The idea of lockdown is to minimise travel, so going for a walk from your home is fine but driving to places like Newton St Loe and Chew Valley lake and then walking around is not. It’s simple - keep yourself local to help prevent the spread. You can check the information on the government website at www.gov.uk. We still have dedicated officers dealing with Covid-19 breaches and are still issuing penalties. The sooner we all stick to the rules, the faster we can ALL get back to ‘normal’.

n Back to more local issues - crime figures in general are down but we continue to suffer from our acquisitive crime series, with sheds, garages and outbuildings targeted and cycles and motorbikes being taken. If you see anyone acting suspiciously, please report it, and if you believe a crime is being committed, call 999. If it’s something that does not need an emergency response, either call 101 or go to the Avon and Somerset Police website, where you can complete a form. n Just before Christmas, we conducted a warrant under the Mis-use of Drugs Act, where a quantity of controlled drugs, cash and paraphernalia was seized. The investigation is ongoing but we are hopeful of a positive outcome. n We have been contacted about the use of the skate park in the Memorial Park. It has been reported that a man has been using a remote-controlled car there, which has struck and injured a member of the public. The town council has

asked us to remind people that the park should only be used by people on skate boards, scooters, roller blades/skates and cycles. And in line with current guidance, this should be for a maximum of one hour while maintaining social distance. If you are going there to use remote-controlled vehicles, you are breaching Covid-19 rules, are likely to receive a penalty and could be dealt with as a public nuisance. n When Keynsham police station closed, the response officers who worked there were moved to Bath and have been covering Keynsham from there since. But I’m pleased to announce the success of a trial to have response officers working from the Keynsham Police Centre in Ashmead Road. Now it has been decided that these 24-hour response officers will remain there, which will provide better response times for emergency calls in and around Keynsham. It is likely that our boundaries will be extended soon, but more about that as and when it happens.

Food bank looks ahead after tough year KEYNSHAM Food Bank ended 2020 overwhelmed by the support it has received from the community it serves but saddened by the level of help it has had to give to those in food crisis. The food bank coped with a number of changes after the lockdown began in the early part of the year. Its first challenge involved moving from its original ‘warehouse’ at Broadlands Academy to a storage facility out of town. Later, thanks to financial donations, it was able to move to a more suitable site in Marksbury. While last fiscal year the food bank supported 1,292 people, as 2020 drew to a close it had helped 1,870 people, with three months of the fiscal year still to come. Food bank project manager Alan Hale said: “It has certainly been a year like no other. I am so pleased we have been here to offer support to those in the community who needed our help. “Sadly, the numbers have painted an horrendous picture, and only time will tell whether that picture will become even more disturbing.” Currently the food bank is operating a delivery-only system two days a week. For the most part, the professionals who issue the vouchers have been sending them electronically to the two volunteers running the distribution centre. The ability to collect food with a voucher had to be withdrawn to protect the wider team of volunteers and the clients. Since

Keynsham Food Bank's 'warehouse' at Marksbury has provided it with a more suitable storage site then, deliveries have been carried out by Keynsham and District Dial a Ride. Mr Hale said: “Our delivery model is continuing into the new year at this time until we know what the pandemic situation has in store for us.” He thanked Keynsham and District Dial a Ride and those who have donated food and money. “There have been many significant donations from individuals, companies, churches and other groups. We do appreciate everyone’s kindness, because without their help we would not be able to support those who need our help.” The food bank’s area covers

the Chew Valley, where the community has taken it to heart. The villages of Stanton Drew and Compton Dando have been organising regular food collections of specific needs, Budgens at Bishop Sutton donated a large consignment of sugar, the Co-op at Chew Magna continues to hold a drop box, as does Pensford Post Office, as well as making additional donations. Just before Christmas, Chew Valley School organised a food collection and took it by minibus to the warehouse at Marksbury. And Stockwood Vale residents have been giving a monthly collection to meet specific needs. Currently the food bank does not need extra volunteers as

Here's a bootful of help for hungry families A BUMPER donation of food has been made to help feed hungry families in Keynsham. Broadlands Academy has been putting together food hampers for pupils who receive free school meals. And when Tesco at Keynsham heard about the initiative, the superstore decided to provide a car load of extra items for the hampers. The donation consisted of broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, tinned tomatoes and more than 90 packets of pasta. Broadlands has been working hard to provide high-quality hampers following reports of the variable quality of food packages being made available by schools across the country during the lockdown. It has also been delivering the hampers when they cannot be picked up. The school approached local providers to ask if they could make donations to enhance its hampers further with healthy and nutritious food and was delighted with Tesco’s response. A school spokesperson said: “Broadlands Academy and its students thank Tesco for their generosity.”

Samuel dies in road accident AN APPEAL has been launched to raise money for the family of a young man who died in a road accident. Samuel Lawes, who grew up in Keynsham, went to Saltford Primary School before attending Wellsway School and St Brendan’s College. The 25-year-old died at the scene of a crash on Cumberland Basin in Bristol on January 9. It is understood that he had recently found out he was going to be a father for the first time. Samuel lived with his mum Mandy Veale in Hartcliffe, Bristol, and worked as a driver for Apollo Logistics. His boss Jack Hilder has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to support Samuel’s family. A tribute to Samuel on the fundraising page says: “He was kind, intelligent, and charming. He was an individual who was always willing to help and go the extra mile for anyone when he could. Sam will be missed by all. “This GoFundMe page is purely to assist his family through this incredibly difficult time, in any way we can. Any support is greatly appreciated.” As the Voice went to press, the appeal had raised £1,640. Police are appealing for anyone with information or dash cam footage of the accident on January 9 to contact them on 101 and quote the reference 5221005840.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

The six clarions that call from our past

I

F you look at the main gates to Keynsham Memorial Park on Bath Hill, you will see the red and gold badge of Keynsham Urban District Council. This features six identical symbols. What are they and why were they used? The symbols are of heraldic origin and are called clarions. A clarion is a medieval brass musical instrument, a type of trumpet with a highpitched, very clear sound. The instrument is long obsolete but the word has survived in the expression “clarion call”, meaning a clear and strong request. How this image, which looks more like a distorted fist or knuckle than a trumpet, came to represent the clarion is something of a mystery. The world of heraldry is fascinating and complex, with its medieval French language and a myriad of rules and conventions. It uses a large number of fixed images, which are called “charges” when they are placed on a shield. Musical charges are few and far between and it may be that the shape represents a different instrument such as a panpipe, organ, mouth organ or recorder. Alternatively, it has been suggested that it represents a "rest", a device used by medieval knights to support a lance during jousting. So how did this unusual image find its way to Keynsham? Like various aspects of our history, the story goes back to Keynsham Abbey. This was founded in 1167 by William, 2nd Earl of Gloucester. At the same time, William was continuing his father’s work in funding the building of the Benedictine monastery of Tewkesbury Abbey, which had started in 1102. A rare document in the Bodleian Library shows William presenting his “Great Charter” to Tewkesbury and this is reproduced here: it clearly shows three clarions on his costume. Although it’s a memorable image, it was painted by the abbey monks at least 300 years after the event and unfortunately is not Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons strictly accurate. Whilst the three clarions did become part of the arms of the Earl of Gloucester, this was after William was Earl. In 1220 Gilbert de Clare inherited the earldom on his mother’s death and became 5th Earl of Gloucester. It was at about this time that organised heraldry began to emerge, with heralds keeping a record of the arms adopted by different nobles and families. The de Clares had arms with three chevrons but also used another form with three gold clarions on a red shield. Puns are commonplace in heraldry and the de Clares came from the village of Clare in Suffolk, so it is probable that a clarion was used to represent their name as the closest word in the heraldic lexicon. By this time, Keynsham Abbey was established, though the buildings may not have been complete, so when they adopted a coat of arms – and we do

Got News? Call Keynsham Voice on 0117 9082121

not know when this was – it was entirely appropriate that it would reflect the image associated with their founder’s family. Presumably six clarions were used to make it distinct from the arms of the earldom. Although the abbey was dissolved in 1539, records and documents survived and some 400 years later when the newly formed urban district council was looking for a badge or logo, they decided to use the abbey shield, with its clarions. About 1961, the council applied for a formal coat of arms and requested that the College of Arms prepare one. The arms are carefully designed to reflect local history and activities and the design would have been developed by the herald’s office, taking account of suggestions and allusions provided by the council. The resulting “achievement” again features the six clarions prominent on the shield (see below left) The arms were granted in 1962 and used until the council ceased to exist in 1974. Since then the main features of the shield, the wavy lines representing our local rivers and the clarions, have featured on the badges and logos of various local establishments, including Broadlands School and several sports clubs. The badge of the cricket club (below right) is an example.

Image courtesy of Keynsham Cricket Club As a footnote, there is another heraldic symbol that forms a well-known feature of Keynsham life and that is the name of the Talbot Inn on the Bath Road. The talbot was a large, heavily-built breed of dog, usually white, with a fine sense of smell. Some believe that it was brought to Britain by William the Conqueror, but it became extinct around the 16th century. The talbot was well-regarded and was used in battle, hunting and for law enforcement. It became the standard representation for a dog in heraldry and features on the coat of arms of many families – such as the Horners of Mells. Until removed in a corporate revamp some years ago, the sign at the Talbot Inn featured a typical image of the breed. l If any reader has a better image of this sign, the society would be pleased to have a copy.

Dash runners who went near and far! RUNNERS took to the streets in high festive spirits for the annual Saltford Santa Dash. Because of coronavirus restrictions, the usual mass run was replaced by a virtual event. Entrants were encouraged to wear Santa hats, and added festive sparkle if brave enough, and run either 5 miles or 5 kilometres for charity. Thanks to the hundreds of people from the local community who took part, and some further afield, the event in December raised £9,000 for its two chosen charities, Off The Record BANES and Jessie May. This exceeded all expectations and will make a big difference to the charities after such a tough year. In addition to the runners, the organisers are hugely grateful for all the support received which made the event possible, in particular the local businesses that generously sponsored the event and the residents of Saltford for their Santa-themed scarecrows. Since it began in 2013, the Saltford Santa Dash has raised £94,000 for registered charities that support local youngsters. With plans already in place for 2021, and a provisional date of Sunday December 5, this sum will hopefully top £100,000.

he Trade Bill recently returned to the Commons from the Lords, who inserted an amendment on genocide into the prospective legislation. The Lords included this stipulation following allegations about genocide being committed against the Uighur Muslim people. A second amendment, which has been passed by the Lords, would give Parliament the power to reject a free-trade bill with any country found to be in breach of human rights violations - this is aimed at China. However, in an unusual development, responsibility would be given to the High Court in England and Wales to assess whether any nation were in violation of the terms, and any trade arrangements made by the government would be dependent upon their rulings. There are, of course, many continuing concerns pertaining to how certain countries operate both domestically and internationally. The lack of good faith by the Chinese government to respect the joint declaration over Hong Kong has inevitably heightened concerns. Any diplomatic arrangements that the United Kingdom has need to reflect not only the political reality but also democratic values of our country. Yet this balance in foreign affairs is best achieved by the votes of an elected Parliament and not the judiciary, which ought to remain separate from politics.

It is, therefore, welcome that the House of Commons voted to ensure that our courts may not rule on the validity of a trade deal, a fundamentally political agreement. The Bill will be considered again by the Lords and I am hopeful they agree that on matters of politics it is Parliament that is sovereign. n The Government’s Covid-19 vaccination programme is the biggest in NHS history and is off to a strong start, with more people here having been immunised compared to anywhere else in Europe. The rollout of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, less than a week after it was authorised by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority, was another world first and a significant achievement in the phased vaccination schedule. The Government has made a commitment to offer a vaccination to everyone in the top four priority groups by February 15, including older care home residents and staff, everyone over 70 and frontline NHS and care staff, as well as those clinically vulnerable to coronavirus. It is important to note that people expecting to receive an appointment letter are asked not to contact their local GP practice or hospital as they will be contacted by the NHS, which is allocating appointments based on the number of available vaccines. All those eligible for the first wave of inoculation will not be overlooked.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER with Transition Keynsham

Say it with local flowers on Valentine's Day

T

his Valentine’s Day millions of pounds will be spent on bouquets of cut flowers. The tradition of Valentine’s flowers dates back to the late 17th century but it really took off in Victorian England, and hundreds of flower farms sprang up across the UK to meet the demand. The 20th century saw a switch to buying imported blooms, and the UK’s flower industry fell into decline. Today, most of the world’s flowers come from Kenya, Colombia and Ecuador. They arrive into Europe via the Netherlands before being shipped to the UK. There are many issues with imported cut flowers. The carbon emissions associated with their growth and transportation are huge. The cut-flower industry generates serious amounts of waste and uses a lot of single use plastic too. Pesticides on unregulated flower farms pollute water and land, kill pollinating insects and make people sick. Flowers grown in waterstressed areas create conflict between using water for export crops (flowers and food), locally consumed food and human drinking-water. There are well-documented workers’ rights issues around access to breaks, holidays and sick pay, and not being paid a decent wage. There are alternatives – making sure your flowers are grown to Fairtrade or organic

Why not buy British this Valentine's Day? standards can protect workers’ rights and the environment. Asking florists about their packaging and transport policies can help effect changes in the industry. An even better option is to buy British flowers. There are increasing numbers of British flower farms, including three just down the road from Keynsham. Pipley Flowers is in Chewton Keynsham. Compton Garden Flowers is in Compton Dando and Floriferous are on the outskirts of Bath. It’s hard to find British-grown

Photo: Pipley Flowers, Chewton Keynsham flowers in February, but there are UK growers providing tulip, narcissi and daffodil bouquets for Valentine’s Day. If you don’t fancy saying it with flowers this year, how about giving your loved one a houseplant instead? Even better – you could plant a tree together to celebrate your love. Now that’s a better idea than a dozen red roses! Find your local flower grower through https:// www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk/ Liz Barling

Zone charge on the way BUSINESSES and individuals are being asked to check whether they will need to pay to drive their vehicles in Bath’s Clean Air Zone ahead of its launch on March 15. Drivers of most pre-euro 6 diesel and pre-euro 4 petrol vehicles will have to pay to drive in the city centre. Private cars and motorbikes will not have to pay to drive in the zone, but daily charges will apply to higher-emission buses, coaches, HGVs and motorhomes (£100 a day) and to higheremission minibuses, taxis, private-hire vehicles, LGVs and vans, including private pick-ups and campers (£9 a day). O

ver the last 15 years, the Keynsham Elim church has supported a charity in Romania called CASA Grace. We were introduced to them by a Bristol-based charity called TEN, and over the years we have tried to help them as they support needy families around Oradea. Even though the pandemic prevented us from running a summer camp last year, we were still able to send 300 Christmas shoeboxes to CASA thanks to the generosity of Keynsham residents and church families. The boxes were handled and delivered to the families in a Covid-secure way. Those Christmas boxes were gratefully received and made a big difference to many people. But occasionally there are more fundamental needs, such as the availability of running water. According to the World Health Organisation 16 million people in Europe still have no direct access to clean drinking water and 48 million do not have piped water in their homes. Way back in 2006 I visited some village homes and was amazed to find that many families drew their water from communal wells. The older children were expected to walk around a mile to fill a container and

then bring it back to the house on a small trolley. When we were there, the weather was good, but in winter the temperature often drops to well below zero and transporting the water through snow and ice is difficult. Some of our church members decided that they could help the families to get easier access to water. They developed a system that involved installing electric pumps in garden wells, digging trenches for piping and soakaways, and then plumbing in kitchen sinks and electric water heaters. The team made several trips and has transformed the everyday lives of local families. Gradually the situation has improved. Some village homes now have standpipes outside, but there are still too many families who have to visit wells or use communal hand pumps - even in the depths of a freezing winter. Even though we can’t go to Romania to help right now, TEN is still receiving donations and enabling its partners to help these needy people during this winter. If you would like to find out more about TEN and the support they are giving to these Eastern European families, please look at their website www.ten-uk.org

Send us your wonderful words! Young artists' success THE winners of Keynsham Rotary's 2020 young artist competition have been announced. The results of last autumn’s contest, which attracted 61 entries, had been delayed due to the pandemic. As a topic for illustration, entrants in Years 2/3/4 & 5/6 groups were given the title of “Magical & Mythical Monsters” and the KS3 & 4 groups were given “One World - a Global View”. The young artists displayed wide ranges of skills and imagination, making judging difficult, but the chosen winners and runners-up in the groups were: l Years 2/3/4: Winner Oskar, runner-up Florence l Years 5/6: Winner Louis, runner-up Rebecca l KS3: Winner Arabella; runner-up Aalia l KS4: Winner Nicky; runner-up Reubin As well as receiving art tokens, the winners and runners-up will be invited to an afternoon tea and have the opportunity to talk to a professional artist, once it is safe to do so. KEYNSHAM Rotary is looking forward to a brighter future with the aid of its young writer competition for 2021. Last year’s event, held during the first lockdown, produced some excellent entries. Now the Rotary is hoping once again to encourage students to put present frustrations to one side and let their imaginations run free. The competition, called 500 Wonderful Words, is set to run from February 8 to March 1 and will have four categories, ranging from seven to 16 years old. It is open to students who go to schools in Keynsham and Salford or who live within the BS31 postal area. Organisers are looking for stories of no more than 500 words to illustrate the following titles: l “At the End of the Rainbow” (for Years 3/4 and 5/6) l “My World” (for KS3 & KS4) Full details will be available on the Rotary website from

February 8 (search for ‘Keynsham Rotary’) including the entry form which must be returned with the story. Entries will be judged independently and prizes will include book tokens and a celebratory tea, where the winners and runners-up will be able to meet a published author (when safe to do so). As part of Keynsham Rotary’s support for the community, it will introduce a young photographer competition in the spring, with details to be announced at a later date. Keynsham Rotary is looking forward to returning to projects that have been put on hold due to the pandemic, including its annual plant fair in May. It is always keen to welcome active volunteer support for its local and international work, so anyone interested in working with Keynsham Rotary should email rotarykeynsham@gmail. com.

Charity seeks bookkeeper's help KEYNSHAM and District Mencap Society is seeking the help of an experienced bookkeeper. Although the charity has had to close all ten of its clubs for people with learning disabilities due to the pandemic, it has continued to stay in touch with members and pay its club leaders and other staff. Treasurer Russ Pocock explained: “We have been fortunate in the past five or six years that our monthly payroll has been run by a bookkeeper in

Keynsham, who has done this for us free of charge. “However, he is retiring at the end of March and we need to find a reliable bookkeeper who would consider giving us a similar service. We do all the preparatory work but need someone to see it through with HMRC.” Anyone with the relevant experience who is interested in helping can contact Russ by phoning 07854 940816 or emailing russell@ keynshammencap.org.uk

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

We’re closer to beating the virus, so please don’t flout the lockdown

S

HORTLY after the New Year, we all received the news we would be entering a third national lockdown. Although unsurprising, I know it was not how we wanted to enter 2021 but, as I’m sure you will agree, the restrictions were and continue to be needed to avoid further harm in our community. With cases rising to new heights, I welcome the Government’s decision to implement this lockdown to slow the transmission and ensure the NHS can cope. I urge you all to continue to stay at home to protect yourself and your loved ones from this fatal virus. For those of you who might be frustrated with another lockdown and are tempted to flout the rules, please don’t. We

all know how lockdown works, and irresponsible and reckless behaviour will not be tolerated. Avon and Somerset Police and their dedicated COVID-19 team have my full support in responding to breaches of the emergency regulations by engaging, explaining, encouraging and enforcing the law. We might feel disheartened at the current situation but it is only temporary. With every vaccine administered, we are changing the odds against the virus and are one step closer to beating it. For this reason, please be responsible during the winter months and follow regulations. For some of you, I know, home is not always a safe place, and as a community we all have a part to play in ensuring our

family, friends and neighbours are supported during these difficult times. If you or someone you know is suffering from domestic abuse, please remember that lockdown and isolation rules do not apply. If you need to leave your home because you are worried about your safety, you can. You are not – and never will be – alone. Young people continue to be further impacted by the pandemic and are now not able to attend school or college. Alongside the difficulties of home learning, young people are more at risk of criminal and sexual exploitation online, and also might be vulnerable to abuse at home. It is our duty to look out for our children and young adults; they might not always recognise the signs of

With Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens abuse or feel like they can speak up about it – we need to be their voice and offer them much-needed support. If you are ever concerned for your safety or safety of someone you know, the police and support services are there to help. Please remember you never need to suffer in silence.

Census to guide future of our services HOUSEHOLDS across Keynsham and Saltford will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021, which will give a snapshot of modern society. The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that provides the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. It will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. “A successful census will ensure everyone from local government to charities can put

services and funding in the places where they are most needed,” said Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at the Office for National Statistics. “This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, schools and new transport routes. That’s why it is so important everyone takes part, and we have made it easier for people to do so online on any device, with help and paper questionnaires for those that need them.” Census day will be on March 21, but households across the country will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March. The census will include questions about your sex, age,

work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. For more information, visit census.gov.uk or email the Bath and North East Somerset census engagement manager, Lisa Wareham, at lisa.wareham75@field.census.gov.uk

'Exercise don't socialise' in parks during lockdown RESIDENTS in Bath and North East Somerset are being reminded they can exercise but not socialise in parks and open spaces under government rules on lockdown. The message comes as Covid-19 cases in the district continue to rise rapidly and among people of all ages. The council is urging people to stay home and pay attention to the rules, which state you can exercise with your household (or

support bubble) or one other person, limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area. It is against the law to meet socially with family or friends unless they are part of your household or support bubble. You cannot leave home for recreational or leisure purposes, such as for a picnic or a social meeting. Councillor Dine Romero, council leader,

said: “While it is important that we get our daily exercise, it does not mean we can go out to socialise. “Our parks are valuable spaces and good for our health but they should not become spaces for transmitting this terrible disease. Our message is exercise but don’t socialise. “We are appealing to you to please follow the stay home rules. By doing so you will be helping to save lives.”

Food hall and kitchen Supermarket vouchers to open with a flourish support families in need A NEW food hall and kitchen being built in Saltford has unveiled its name. The new venture, which will transform old farm structures into a new building, will be called Flourish Foodhall & Kitchen at Glenavon Farm. Cotswold Fayre, the company behind the new enterprise on the Bath Road, wanted a name that reflects the ethos of the new venture, to be environmentally and socially responsible. Paul Hargreaves, CEO of Cotswold Fayre said: “We are passionate about food and the positive impact it can have, for our customers that enjoy it, partners that produce it, the people we work with and the community in which we are a part.” Examples of how this aim will be put into practice include the provision of electric car charging points for customers,

by working with Too Good to Go, an app allowing consumers to find, buy and collect food that may otherwise be wasted, quality products sourced from local producers, and the aim that the food hall will be as plastic-free as possible on launch. Paul Castle, managing director at Flourish Foodhall & Kitchen, said: “We have lots of exciting plans to make Flourish a healthy contributor to the local community, our team and the planet. Working with local farmer Adam Stratton, the construction programme is well under way and we anticipate opening in spring 2021.” People can keep up to date with Flourish, including how to apply for one of the 40 jobs being created, by visiting its website www.flourishatglenavon.co.uk or following its social channels https://www.facebook.com/ FlourishGlen/

A SCHEME to provide £40 supermarket vouchers over Christmas to families whose children are eligible for free school meals saw 3,750 vouchers reaching those in need in the district. Bath & North East Somerset Council processed 2,439 applications, with most vouchers issued in the three weeks before Christmas. The electronic vouchers could be spent in a range of supermarkets and were available to the families of pupils entitled to benefit-related free school meals, as well as parents who receive free childcare for twoyear-olds, where benefits are such that they would have been entitled to free school meals. The Government has launched a national voucher scheme that enables all eligible children to access free school meals in term time while schools

remain closed. During term time, it is the responsibility of schools to ensure that provision is made for children who qualify for free school meals. For February school holidays, the council will be extending its voucher scheme. It is part of a wide range of community support for vulnerable families, including FOOD clubs, food banks, welfare and financial support. The scheme is funded by the Government’s Covid Winter Grant Scheme. There are currently more than 4,000 children in Bath and North East Somerset who receive benefitrelated free school meals. 3SG and St John’s Foundation have already allocated £55,000 from a local fundraising appeal to community-led food projects serving communities of high need across Bath and North East Somerset.

A delightful book to take into the New Year. The celebrity chef Lorraine Pascale has come up with some great ideas of all things sweet but with a lighter side to them. She has been helped by a team of dietitians and has some great alternatives to sugar and butter – such as ground almonds, dried fruit and sugar alternatives such as Stevia. From a lighter version of Victoria sponge; to a mouthwatering butternut, squash and onion quiche; to everyone’s favourite blooming chocolate brownies - all the recipes are clearly laid out with great pictures. Adult Fiction

North and South Elizabeth Gaskell A classic story by the Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell, who was a great friend of one of the other great 19th century authors, Charlotte Bronte.

Margaret Hale has to abandon her idyllic Hampshire home when her father leaves the Church on a matter of “conscience”, and they move to the industrial town of Milton. Margaret is repulsed by the town’s ugliness but soon becomes friends with one of the mill workers and develops of a strong sense of social justice. Meanwhile, her father begins to teach literature to one of the mill owners, John Thornton, and so begins one of fiction’s great romantic relationships. Margaret initially despises John Thornton for the way he treats his workers and for being in “trade” but as with all great stories there are many twists and turns before the end. This story highlights great social concerns of the age and the move from the countryside to the new industrial cities of the 19th century – the heart of the industrial revolution.

the lockdown, then try this first book in the saga A Song of Ice and Fire, which was serialised in the very popular TV series Game of Thrones. These are complex novels , following in the footsteps of a Norse saga, with many characters and family members. But do not let this put you off. It is a sprawling tale and well written. Set between four lands, it follows the political intrigues of a number of families. There are battles, dragons, fabulous creatures and heroes. The series of books can be read without watching the TV series but they are also an excellent accompaniment. Children's Fiction

Across the Risen Sea Bren MacDibble Published last year and from the award-winning Australian author of The Dog Runner comes a special tale set in a post climate change world, where we meet Neoma and Jag. They live in a gentle place, on

high ground surrounded by the rising sea. However, one day two strangers from the Valley of the Sun come to the village and the two friends are drawn into a world of secrets and danger. Brave Neoma has to set off on a mission across the wild sea to rescue her best friend and save the village. A real adventure tale.

eynsham’s group of Avon Wildlife Trust needed a boost after the announcement of the latest lockdown, and they certainly got it with the first Zoom talk of 2021, writes chairman Dave Sage. The speaker was Robert Hargreaves, who has been recording the birdlife of his local patch at Newton St Loe for the website of Avon Birding for five

years now, having started bird watching at the age of 13. He is also involved with Bristol Ornithological Club and RSPB Bath local branch. So he certainly knows the area and its wildlife. Newton St Loe has a fascinating history as well as being a wonderful place for a countryside walk. His debut talk, both in front of an audience and on Zoom, was enjoyed by a record audience of 71

screens, around 100 people, raising more than £200 for AWT. His photos were supplemented by those of Wayne Tucker, whose superb wildlife images are well worth finding on his Instagram accounts, @snapp.3r (birds) and @macro.snapp3r (insects). The area, including Newton Park, the site of Bath Spa University, is rich in wildlife, particularly birds, attracted to the lakes (the largest

body of water in BANES outside the reservoirs), woodlands, pasture and shrubs. Up to 50 bird species are seen daily, with an annual count of 100 species. The village of Newton St Loe, mostly owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, has a long history, its church mentioned in the Domesday Book. There is a strong farming background, centred on Newton Farm, increasingly

Bird song and snowdrops bring promise of spring FEBRUARY may seem an unpromising time in the wildlife calendar, but there are lots of stirrings as we progress through the month. Among the increasing bird song, thrushes are now singing madly to attract their mate and among these, our largest resident of the family, the elusive mistle thrush. Its normal flight call is a rapid, strident series of clicks, like one of those old-fashioned football rattles. But it has a wonderfully wistful, slightly mournful song of short, drifting phrases that is at its best now – a perfect accompaniment to

wild windy days of late winter. It can be hard to pin down the singer, so to hear this for yourself before trying to spot the thrush in the wild, check out www.britishbirdsongs.uk/mistle-thrush/ This month is also the time to look for drifts of snowdrops, the iconic flower of late winter. After the darkness of winter, snowdrops are a welcome and early sign that spring is on its way. The origins of UK snowdrops are a mystery – they are associated with purity and were planted around religious sites from the Middle Ages onwards so there is some question as to whether it is

a native flower. Whatever the case, it is a welcome bloom in this most flowerless of months. On warmer days, our common frogs and toads will be stirred into breeding action, so check out local ponds where you may see ripples from these amphibians diving away as you approach. Having emerged from hibernation, they gather to breed and suddenly pond edges will be filled with spawn, the result of frenzied mating activity overnight. Each female can lay up to 3,000 eggs so in a good year the pond might be inundated with tiny tadpoles. But dozens of different

predators – from dragonfly larvae and goldfish to adventurous blackbirds – enjoy feasting on tadpoles and very few survive to make the transformation to the froglet stage in early summer. Fewer still make the long journey to adulthood three years later. You may be wondering about the difference between spawn from frogs and toads. Well, frogs lay a cluster of jelly-like eggs, whereas toad spawn comes in long ribbons. Keeping an eye on spawn as it transforms into tadpoles is a wonderful way for children to appreciate the wonders of nature. #wildlifeinlockdown #naturehelps

renowned for its shop and café. What follows is a brief snapshot of the dozens of sightings Robert shared with us. Robert led us on an evocative virtual walk from the village, to Newton Park and back, describing what one would expect to see. In autumn and early winter one can see fieldfare, redwing, mistle thrush and green woodpecker feasting on fallen apples. Continuing up to the lakes, alder trees attract chaffinch, goldfinch and greenfinch, in the winter siskin and, rarely, redpoll. The lakes are full of large carp, but smaller fish ensure a good chance of seeing heron, kingfisher and different species of egret. In winter, ducks abound, including mallard, coot, moorhen, tufted duck, teal, pochard, wigeon, mandarin duck and the occasional shoveler and water rail.

In the farmland around the park, in summer one can expect to see linnet, yellowhammer, wheatear, red-legged partridge and woodcock, with buzzard, rook and raven nesting in the woodlands. This year, an overwintering flock of golden plover has been spotted by several enthusiasts, including member Andrew Harrison. Raptors are increasingly seen, including kestrel, sparrowhawk, red kite, hobby, barn owl and peregrine falcon, the latter feeding on the abundant pigeon populations. Returning to the farm buildings, the summer brings swift, swallow and house martins, adding to resident house sparrow, starling and collared dove. Our thanks go to Robert, to all those who signed in, and to Kathy Farrell for organising another highly successful event.

Our next online talk is Wildlife of the Dorset Coast with Ed Drewitt, on Friday February 12. The Jurassic Coast and surrounds are fabulous places to visit, with diverse habitats and wildlife. The Girl On A White Horse There, in the distance, I saw her A girl on a white horse, motionless As clouds drifted slowly by She remained transfixed, caught in my gaze What was this vision, this mirage An optical illusion in appearance And yet so real, so "there" in the moment Thoughts were racing through my mind Has this child lost her way maybe? The scene all around, so peaceful, so calm The girl, clearly a young child in age In her white dress, white hat, her white horse Astride this magnificent creature, tall and dignified No saddle, no bridle, just a pure white main The horse stood proud and majestic, poised Time had passed and yet time was meaningless The question remained, who was this girl? Almost without thinking, I stepped over the stile I did not want to alarm her or cause the horse to bolt Neither of them seemed aware of my presence They remained inert, undisturbed, untroubled Suddenly, a loud crack, like a gunshot filled the air As I turn to trace the sound, birds leave branches In a synchronised dramatic escape, they scatter I turn back with concern for the girl on the white horse As if by way, so unexplainable, they had gone I turn full circle scanning all around me But as of their plight, I was left mystified As I tried to make sense of it all, find clarity Many questions remain unanswered Were they ever real, was I ever there? Avon Fire & Rescue Service staff are helping pupils to study at home

Coming to the rescue of pupils needing laptops FIRE and rescue staff in Keynsham are helping to equip pupils so they can learn at home during the lockdown. They are among staff from Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) who have teamed up with local charity DigiLocal to help tackle digital poverty. Almost 12% of young people do not have access to the internet and many lack access to a laptop or similar device, making learning from home a near impossible task. Since partnering with DigiLocal, staff from AF&RS have coordinated the donation of more 350 laptops to help pupils in need. DigiLocal is a Bristol-based charity that supports the education of young people by giving them access to technology. Vaughan Jenkins, Head of Transformation for AF&RS and who has been co-ordinating the initiative, said: “I would like to offer my personal thanks to those who have given so generously and who’ve donated laptops to those who are digitally excluded. “We believe these laptops will make a huge difference to those who require them and we are thrilled to be able to support DigiLocal in trying to minimise the impact of digital poverty.” DigiLocal CEO John Bradford

Computer firm steps in to help school A KEYNSHAM computer company has helped to equip school children with laptops so they can study at home in the event of self-isolation. Smart Computers refurbished and provided seven machines at a heavily discounted rate – with mortgage advisors Moving Experience meeting a third of the cost. The machines are to help pupils at Glenfrome Primary School in Eastville, Bristol, where Matt Colley, who heads Moving Experience, is a governor. When Matt was made aware of the school’s need for extra equipment, he contacted his firm’s trusted IT supplier, Dean Wood of Smart Computers, which has a store in Keynsham High Street. Dean, director at Smart Computers, said: “We sourced some computers which were perfect for the school’s needs and we are happy to give back to the community.” Matt said: “We didn’t want any children to miss out because they had to stay at home but didn’t have the right kit. “I knew people in the small business community would have the skills, contacts and willingness to help.” The school offers blended learning - the use of online support alongside classroom

E-scooter rental scheme to cut car use PEOPLE in Keynsham and Saltford will soon be able to rent an e-scooter and take it home under a new long-term rental scheme. The initiative, launched by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) and Voi Technology, forms part of the region’s e-scooter trials. Voi’s long-term e-scooter rentals can be used by residents across the whole of Bath and North East Somerset and the rest of the region, giving access to cost-effective and socially distanced transport. This scheme complements the ‘hopon, hop off’ short-term e-scooter scheme currently available for rides in defined parts of Bath and Bristol. With long-term rentals, residents in the region can rent an e-scooter for personal use that they can keep at home for an extended period, giving them more flexibility to travel from home and move within the region, improving air quality and reducing congestion. Tim Bowles, West of England Mayor, said: “We are the first area in the country to host Voi’s long-term e-scooter rental service. This will offer another practical, flexible and cost-effective alternative to the car for people who want to use the scooter to help us get our region moving.”

E-scooters are being offered for rental as an alternative to the car - privately owned e-scooters remain illegal to use on roads From January 27, users will be able to rent a scooter for one or six months or until the trial ends in late October 2021 and use them within the pre-defined geofenced WECA region. It costs £35 to rent the scooter for one

month, with lower rates available for a longer rental period. Privately owned e-scooters remain illegal to use on roads, pavements, parks and any other areas. Residents interested in signing up for a long-term rental can register on the Voi website https://www.voiscooters.com/longterm-rentals/. To be eligible, users need to be over 18 years old, have a valid or provisional driving licence and live in the WECA region. Once the user has been approved, the vehicle delivery will be arranged by Voi. Alongside the scooter, the user will receive a helmet, a lock and two battery chargers. Voi will also provide a user guide with detailed information on how to use, maintain and charge the scooter at home. Councillor Dine Romero, leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “E-scooters are part of much wider ambitions we have in Bath & North East Somerset to improve the way people move about and we are currently consulting on this in our Bath Transport Delivery Action Plan. “The plan looks at new ways of getting around the area to help us reach our target of being carbon neutral by 2030 to help tackle the climate and ecological emergency.”

Legal battle looms over airport plans TOP legal minds are preparing the groundwork for a fight over the expansion of Bristol Airport next summer. North Somerset Council has promised a “robust defence” of its decision to reject the scheme to boost annual passenger numbers to 12 million due to the impact on the environment and neighbouring communities. The airport’s plans were met with opposition from campaigners including those in Keynsham, where a public meeting was attended by concerned residents and protesters marched through the town. The airport’s appeal against the decision will be considered at a four-week public inquiry due to start in July – allowing campaigners to bolster the council’s position – and the environment is firmly on the agenda. Bristol Green councillor Stephen Clarke, of the Bristol Airport Action Network, one

Bristol Airport's vision of expansion is the subject of a public enquiry environmental arguments against the expansion. Bristol Airport said sustainable development has always been at the centre of its proposals. It plans to become carbon neutral for direct emissions by 2025 and a net zero airport by 2050, and said it had proposed a “comprehensive package of measures” to minimise the adverse environmental impacts of an additional two million passengers per year. Councillor Clarke said the

of the organisations that will speak at the hearing, said: “There are currently over 20 regional airports thinking about expanding. Bristol Airport is the first to go to a planning appeal. That makes it really important as a precedent. “There are quite a lot of international organisations that are helping us. “We have the money we need to pay for a barrister and we have various experts. We’re putting together our case.” That case will focus on the

We’re saying it’s big enough,” he said. Councillor Clarke said the people of North Somerset were “completely against” the expansion – out of more than 11,500 comments on the application, some 8,900 were objections. n KEYNSHAM AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB

Fajita Friday fun for young swimmers

Zoom helps to ease the lockdown gloom

W

ith England in its third lockdown, swimming clubs are back out of the water again, to the disappointment of so many young swimmers. Keynsham Amateur Swimming Club believe that with children not being at school, it is even more important to keep their swimmers connected with their club friends and maintain fitness levels. Coaches Jasper Lye (regional squad) and Zach Derrick (county squad) have been delivering weekly Zoom sessions focussing on the importance of pre-pool and post-pool exercises for both training and competition, working on swimming goals, and taking a look at set planning. There is a schedule of Zoom land training sessions for all the competitive squads. Once a week the whole club are invited to take part in a Friday family fun activity, usually a cook-along or a quiz night. Most recently it was Fajita Friday! Keynsham are also looking forward to welcoming elite swimmers Joe Litchfield, Anna Hopkin and their very own Olympian, Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, to some virtual Q&A sessions soon.

Performance swimmer Georgia G (16 years) also had success in the series, bagging a silver (200m IM) and bronze (100m IM), plus a 10th spot in the leader boards for 100m breaststroke. And team mate Jess L (14 years) topped the national leader boards six times, including a bronze in 100m backstroke. The girls are still waiting for their medals to arrive in the post. Meanwhile, everyone at Keynsham is looking forward to the start of Series 2, which has been put on hold until after lockdown.

The next generation

Laura B at Counties 2020, the last gala KASC were able to attend Series 1 of Level X Racing started on October 23 and ended on December 31. The results are submitted to Swim England, who then publish national leader boards across each age group and event category, shining a light on all the achievements and awarding medals to the top three swimmers in each leader board category. Keynsham swimmer Laura B, a

remarkable 11-year-old butterfly swimmer, made the top ten spot three times, with 3rd in 100m butterfly, 5th in 50m butterfly and 10th in 100 Individual Medley (IM). Proud mum Rita said: “We are very proud of Laura. This is on a national level, so out of all the children who competed in England, it’s a great achievement to make the leader board.”

Keynsham has space swimmers aged 5-8 years in the Prelim Squad (school years Reception, 1, 2 and 3). If your child can swim one length (25 metres) of front crawl and backstroke they may be what Keynsham are looking for. Trials will take place at Keynsham pool after lockdown, so now would be a good time to get onto the list. Swimmers from all ages (including over 18s) are welcome to apply for a trial. Contact thea. beament@keynshamswimming.club or enquire via the club’s Facebook page.

Level X Racing results On December 19 and 21, Keynsham were extremely fortunate to be able to squeeze in Level X Racing events between lockdowns. The swimmers were excited to be able to finally compete in again in these events, which were introduced by Swim England to give swimmers goals and times on the board in a nationwide virtual gala. There were many personal bests and some fantastic swims across all the competitive squads.
