A KEYNSHAM woman and her crew mates have kept their transatlantic race hopes afloat – despite a terrifying attack by a marlin. The giant fish repeated rammed their rowing boat with its spear-like snout, puncturing the hull three times. The quick-thinking trio saved their vessel by plugging one of the gaping holes with a champagne bottle and epoxy resin. Maddie Difazio-Wright, a former pupil of Chandag and Wellsway schools in Keynsham, was on rowing duty at New Year when she and her crew saw “something big” approaching their boat through the water. They said: “We established it wasn’t a shark because it had this bright, really flashing blue mark on its fins, and then we saw the huge bill as well.” “We thought ‘what is going on?’ Then we saw some fish it was chasing. There was a shoal of fish hiding underneath our rudder.” The crew pulled their oars out of the water to protect them before the marlin – estimated to be about three metres long swam at the boat and puts its bill straight through the underside. Maddie’s parents Sally Difazio and Nigel Wright, who live in Keynsham, learned details of the incident during one of their regular phone calls with her. Although the couple had expected there to be challenges during the voyage, the incident the crew have dubbed ‘the marlin mishap’ took them by surprise.

Maddie Difazio-Wright cleaning debris from the hull of Vibe the Wave after the marlin struck Dad Nigel said: “We anticipated a capsize or some breakages of oars or something technical, but we didn’t anticipate a marlin attack in the Atlantic!” And mum Sally admitted the incident had caused her worry. She said: “There’s isn’t a lot you can do to stop a 35-year-old, even if she is your own child! If they want to do it, you have to support them. But it’s been a hard journey.” The crew are among 38 competing in the World’s Toughest Row, from the Canary Islands, off the west coast of Africa, to the Caribbean island of Antigua - 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometres) away on the other side of the Atlantic. As the Voice went to press, their boat Vibe the Wave had completed 2,132 nautical miles

Maddie, who is skipper of the crew, said of the challenge: “Passion and a sense of adventure seems to bring out the best in many people - it certainly seems to for me. “I feel privileged to be in a position where this row is even remotely possible, and my hope is that if we can achieve more than just crossing an ocean, whatever that may be, then that is a true adventurous accomplishment.” She and crew mates Grace Gilbert, from Oxford, and Grace ‘G’ Pybus, from Newport, have been taking it in shifts to row the boat day and night. It is estimated that they will row more than 1.5 million oar strokes during the race and can face waves of up to 20ft high. They captured footage of the marlin on their GoPro camera, including one of the moments when it rammed their boat. After a recent phone call with her parents, dad Nigel said

CHILDREN at Saltford School are enjoying a new craft space created in memory of a much-loved member of staff. Debbie Parfrey was an inspiration to pupils during her many years as a teaching assistant. She loved to craft, pursuing it as a hobby outside school, and would always have great ideas for the children. Her children were also pupils there, and the school was a big part of her life. Mrs Parfrey died after being diagnosed with cancer, and she is missed greatly by everyone at the school. Now a new area called Crafty Corner has been built in tribute to her legacy. Emma Dixon, a higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) at the school, came up with the idea. She said: “There are many children who like to sit quietly and draw or colour at playtime, rather than running around playing games. So we built the area for the children to use and dedicated it to her memory. “We asked the parents for craft donations and have now built an area that is stocked with wonderful things for the children to use, and books and soft bean bags for children to sit and read.” Mrs Parfrey’s husband, daughters and

We just love it in our Crafty Corner! close friends attended a special assembly, after which a group of children who are part of the school council, and school playleaders, gave a speech about the area and talked about Mrs Parfrey. Mrs Parfrey’s husband David then cut the ribbon to officially open the area. Emma said: “The area is very busy and the children are really enjoying it. I walked past yesterday and heard one child say ‘this is the best place ever’. “This will be a great facility for the school and all the children whilst remembering our dear friend and colleague Debbie Parfrey.”

ON THE BEAT

Extra patrols tackling anti-social behaviour THE New Year celebrations seem an age ago, and we are already looking at planning for a number of events coming up this year in and around Keynsham. As previously mentioned, we will soon be moving to the police building in Ashmead Road, Keynsham. We don’t expect this to lead to any reduction in the service we provide to Keynsham and the surrounding villages – the aim is to help us work more closely with the response teams already based there. The information-sharing and joint working should mean both teams can provide a better service for the residents and visitors to Keynsham. We have been looking to run more beat surgeries around the High Street to make it easier for you to speak to the team. Details will be advertised in various coffee shops, so please keep an eye out. We also aim to promote them on social media. n In response to anti-social

with PC James Evans behaviour in and around the High Street, we have put on extra foot patrols, using officers from all the Bath neighbourhood policing teams. We have had positive result against problems in Poundland. We won’t be able to change all the attitudes of those involved, but we have seen improvements in some. We will also look at working with local schools to help with the restitution of the offences that get highlighted, if suitable. We have received many positive comments from people about our presence and we will

continue with this as we move forwards. n As a force, we are still suffering with theft from, and theft of, transit vans, primarily vehicles that appear to be carrying tools. We always advise removing tools from vehicles that are not stored in secure locations. There are several measures you can take to minimise the risk, such as installing cameras front and back. Some are motionsensitive and are triggered if someone approaches your van. If you have a panel van, you can mount a camera inside to capture images of offenders if they get into the vehicle from the rear. Trackers can be a good idea, both of vehicles and large equipment. These can be relatively cheap and easily monitored from most mobile phones. n As part of our role, we have several school and nursery visits planned, ranging from the basic ‘meet and greet’ with the young ones to ‘crime and consequences’

talks at our secondary schools. We also visit all sorts of community groups, from Scouts to the Women’s Institute. If you have an event you would like us to attend, or a group you would like us to talk to, please get in touch and we will see if we can make it work. You can contact us through the community pages of the Avon and Somerset Police website. n As part of our efforts as a force to remain transparent in all we do, our Chief Constable, Sarah Crew, allowed a documentary to be filmed about internal investigations into officer misconduct. The Channel 4 programme has three episodes, with the first being shown on Monday January 29. The decision to allow filming was a brave one, but one the Chief believed was necessary, to highlight how we deal with officers who fall below the standards expected of them by the police service and the public we serve. l Vans targeted: Page 22

NEWS

Trial car ban boosts walking and cycling HUNDREDS of vehicles a day have been taken off a ‘rat run’ route between Keynsham and Whitchurch since trial traffic restrictions came into force. A survey of residents revealed that most supported the scheme affecting Queen Charlton Lane, Bath and North East Somerset Council has revealed. One respondent commented: “This road was being used as a ‘rat run’ prior to the closure. Since the trial, I have been able to walk along a quiet country lane without fear of being knocked down.” Through-traffic was prevented from travelling between Queen Charlton Lane and Whitchurch as part of one of three Liveable Neighbourhood experimental trials run by the council. The other two were at Southlands (Weston) and Church Street (Widcombe) in Bath. Results of all three trials have been published as part of the next step in deciding whether to make them permanent. B&NES Council said: “The aim is to stop motorists using Queen Charlton Lane as an inappropriate shortcut (or through route) when travelling between Keynsham and Bristol and to provide a safe, healthy environment for residents, pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists.” To keep traffic out of the narrow lane, two sets of dropdown bollards and temporary wooden planters were installed – one set just after Furthermead Farm and the other before Dapwell Lane. Landowners and farmers have been able to drop the bollards to gain access.

Commuters have been using the blue route since the red route (Queen Charlton Lane) was blocked to traffic Data revealed that, on average, 470-500 fewer vehicle movements per day were recorded on Queen Charlton Lane after the trial started in November 2022 - a cut of around 85%. On Woollard Lane, northbound traffic increased by 250-275 vehicle movements a day (11-12%), while southbound traffic rose by 370-425 (10-12%). On the southwest section of Charlton Road, northbound traffic rose by 575-580 vehicles a day (13-15%) and southbound traffic by 640 (16%).

Walking and cycling in the lane increased significantly, with an average of 50 more pedestrians a day (a rise of 300%) and 12-18 more cyclists (60-80%). The council said: “The data shows that the trial has significantly reduced throughtraffic on Queen Charlton Lane and provided a safe and pleasant route for walking and cycling. In turn, this has encouraged an uplift in active travel along the lane.” It said the increase in traffic on Woollard Lane and Charlton

Road was to be expected, as the purpose of the trial was to encourage commuters to stay on the main roads. Some of the data suggested a general increase in traffic on routes that would otherwise be unaffected by the trial. “On balance, it appears that the volume of displaced traffic is relatively modest, considering the length and the directness of the route that was closed to through-traffic, and the changes in traffic elsewhere.” In the survey of residents, 84 respondents (73%) supported the trial scheme while 24 (21%) opposed it. Those who backed it said the area felt safer, especially for children and the elderly, and it was more pleasant for walking and cycling. Those against it argued that it was unfair to motorcyclists, had caused traffic congestion elsewhere, and that the scheme was unnecessary and a waste of money. Councillor Manda Rigby, cabinet member for transport, said: “I look forward to considering the outcomes presented in these reports before a decision is made on whether to make these trials permanent.” She said the council would also be considering similar schemes in five areas of Bath. “The long list of proposed interventions suggested by local communities across all the Liveable Neighbourhood areas is being reviewed by local councillors and considered as part of a full business case to be submitted to the West of England Combined Authority in early summer 2024.”

Fiona’s balloons help to banish the blues PEOPLE in Keynsham town centre were given a reason to be cheerful on Blue Monday – when they were handed free balloons. Fiona Bell raised plenty of smiles with the give-away in High Street and Temple Street. To bring some light relief to January 15 - which has been dubbed ‘the most depressing day of the year’ - she handed out 35 balloons in the sunshine. “I ran out of time to give away more - but have money donated for some more, so will find another day to cheer people up,” Fiona said. “I had to take five home because the balloons had danced about in the wind so much their strings were all knotted up, and I couldn’t release them until I got home. Then I re-stringed them and gave them to small children in Saltford.” Her main takers were parents out with their small children.

“A couple of people asked if they could have one for their grandchild/small person at home.” Fiona was inspired by a news item about a man giving away free balloons in Edinburgh. “I have tried the balloon giveaway before - in Bath on Random Acts of Kindness Day. “It is such an antidote to feeling blue - nearly everyone smiles at you when you walk along a street holding a fistful of balloons!” Fiona’s balloon trail also took in the Ashton Way and Tesco car parks, as well as the library and town council offices, where she called in to share what she was up to. Among the traders she met on the day was Cat Midgeley, who runs Temple Street Canteen and Savour – one of her staff donated funds for the balloons. Another donation came from

Senshu Flukes in action at the UK championships

Chris Bollom, owner of Simply Carpets, who was the first person to support Fiona’s idea. “The Buyology staff were really helpful making up the balloon bundles - and helped me when the first lot got tangled.” Fiona volunteers for a number of local good causes, including Keynsham Community

Fridge and Saltford Community Coffee Club. As she has still has some donated funds to spend, she is looking forward to future balloon give-aways. “Random Acts of Kindness Day on February 17 or World Kindness Day on November 13 would be good candidates.”

with Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society In December 1939, the Ministry of Supply started the National Salvage Scheme to save paper, rags, rope and string, household bones, rubber, food waste and all kinds of metal to contribute to the war effort. The Women’s Voluntary Service helped run the campaign to encourage householders to salvage as much as possible, and the Keynsham branch participated with enthusiasm. Using off-cuts of materials supplied by Fry’s, posters produced by Mary Fairclough and a borrowed horse and cart, they toured every road in the town. Seen here outside 45-49 Charlton Road, their publicity/collection campaign raised the profile of the scheme locally and was deemed a great success.

Gas pipes get upgrade on A4 Bath Road Image: Wales & West Utilities

WORK that began at New Year to upgrade gas pipes along the A4 Bath Road in Saltford is scheduled to continue into the spring. Wales & West Utilities announced that phase one of the scheme is being carried out from close to the Grange Road junction in Saltford to near the Pixash Lane junction in Keynsham. Barring any significant engineering difficulties, the company anticipates that the work will be finished by April. The current phase involves upgrading 1km of old metallic

Saltford will end up with an all-polythene plastic network of gas pipes once the various works to replace metallic ones have been completed gas main, as well as upgrading associated service pipes to affected businesses and properties. The company says that work is being carried out during off-peak hours (from 9.30am to 2.30pm) and any requirement for two-way lights will be limited

to minimised disruption. Wales & West says its records indicate that the gas main runs along the footway, so it hopes that any encroachments into the carriageway are minimal. Phase two will involve work on Bristol Road, near the roundabout by A39/The Globe Inn.

Saltford Parish Council, which is being kept informed about progress by Wales & West Utilities, said: “WWU were advised that resurfacing works is due to take place and, with the extensive number of leaks this gas main has experienced, it was thought wise to include these works to avoid having to excavate on a newly resurfaced carriageway.” Phase three will then involve the upgrading of all outstanding metallic gas mains in Saltford, which would then make the village an all-polythene plastic network. Work in Mead Lane, which was originally planned for this summer, has been postponed until further notice due to Wessex Water’s ongoing works at their Saltford treatment centre. Light pollution fears over golf club’s plan PLANS to increase floodlighting hours at Stockwood Vale Golf Club have been opposed by Keynsham Town Council. The club wants to extend the use of floodlighting on its driving range from 8pm to 9pm (Monday to Friday) and from 6pm to 9pm on Saturdays. The town council has formally objected on the grounds of light pollution and the impact on the natural environment. The applicant, Family Golf Centres Limited, said the proposed LED lighting would have “minimal impact” on protected bats and had been designed with the advice of an ecologist. It added that since the original planning permission was granted more than 20 years ago, the landscape of the golf course had matured

substantially, meaning trees and other vegetation would provide “significant screening” to mitigate the effect of the floodlighting on “distant” neighbours. A previously application to extend floodlighting hours was withdrawn in February 2022. Bath and North East Somerset Council is due to make a decision on the latest application soon.

School brings festive sparkle PUPILS from Broadlands School in Keynsham helped to bright up the festive season for a local nursing home. They visited residents at Charlton House just before the Christmas break and put up decorations they had made. Pictured helping to brighten up the nursing home are Broadlands School staff Miss Davis, deputy head of safeguarding, and Miss Quinn, head of art.

Nursery retains its ‘good’ Ofsted rating A CHILDREN’S nursery in Keynsham has retained its ‘good’ rating from Ofsted. Youngsters who attend Snapdragons are happy and well cared-for, inspectors said. As well as its overall ‘good’ rating, the nursery was also judged to be ‘good’ for its quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, and leadership and management. The inspection - the first at the nursery at Ellsbridge House on the Bath Road since 2018 - found that the children form secure attachments with the staff. Leaders create an ambitious curriculum to help children gain the skills needed for future learning, and children show positive attitudes to learning, including an interest in books. “Babies receive cuddles from the caring staff. This helps them to feel safe and secure,” Ofsted said. The inspectors said children have plenty of opportunities to play outdoors, where staff help them to learn how to stay safe. The children are taught to develop good communication and language skills, enjoying singing nursery rhymes together and confidently join in with action songs. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and/or in receipt of additional funding make very good progress. Staff ensure children with SEND receive targeted support to develop their

®

Staff include and engage all children and provide individual praise for their efforts. The children are valued as unique individuals and are encouraged to share their cultures and traditions. Staff involve children in a broad range of celebrations and festivals special to them, such as Thanksgiving and Diwali. This supports children’s understanding of diversity and the wider world. Parents’ feedback is extremely positive. They highlight staff’s dedication and professionalism and value the range of experiences on offer, such as forest school sessions. Staff have a good understanding of their safeguarding responsibilities and know the signs that may indicate a child is at risk of harm. The inspectors said the nursery could improve by enhancing staff’s understanding of what they want children to learn and why, and further support their teaching skills. The nursery could also strengthen the organisation of key routines to minimise disruptions to children’s play and enhance children’s engagement and focus in learning. The nursery had 154 children aged up to four on its roll at the time of the inspection. It employed 35 staff to work directly with the children, as well as 10 non-childcare staff.

communication and language skills in a variety of ways. A strong focus is placed on supporting the wellbeing of the children, who learn self-regulation and social skills. For example, in their newly adapted mindfulness room, children learn to listen to others and take turns as they sit in a circle for a group activity.

Another soggy start to the new year Somerdale swamped Photo: Colin Rayner

KEYNSHAM and Saltford have been slowly drying out after the New Year floods. In scenes reminiscent of the start of 2023, roads were rendered impassable, train services cancelled and ‘Somerdale Island’ made a reappearance after being surrounded by water. The River Avon burst its banks, once again forcing the Lock Keeper pub on Keynsham Road to close as its beer garden and part of its cellar were flooded. A sign outside the pub announced a “short farewell” to allow refurbishment to take place, with the reopening date yet to be announced as the Voice went to press. The pub announced on its Facebook page: “Our beautiful Lock Keeper is now closed for an exciting make over. We’ll miss seeing you all, especially our regulars, but can’t wait to show you the new look when it’s all complete.” The Keynsham Rugby Club

The flood marker from December 1960 Photo: Pete Robson Left, discharge from the sewage pumping station at The Hams ground was also submerged, providing a temporary arena for paddleboarding and kayaking. A couple concerned about sewage being discharged from a pumping station off Dryleaze at Somerdale during last year’s January flooding contacted the Voice again to say the problem had reoccurred a year on. Denise Bruton said: “The

original outlet pipe has been capped off, so now it’s pumping the liquid out of the top of the platform by the valve. “We were aware that Wessex Water had been working in the area during the summer months, but it appears they have not been able to resolve this recurring problem when flood water reached high tide.”

She and her husband Jeff reported seeing several cars stranded in the car park behind Somerdale Educate Together Primary School and that water reached the back of a house overlooking the football pitches on Chandos Road. Denise said: “The water even managed to reach the concrete marker for what I think is the 1960 flood.” A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, the very wet weather of recent weeks, which saw the River Avon at or close to record levels, had a knock-on effect on the hydraulic operation of the sewage pumping station at The Hams. “Our teams have been at the site to assess the issue and, having determined there are no structural defects, we are taking steps to safeguard the station against future such problems.’’ l The company has also revealed plans to cut the amount of raw sewage being discharged into the River Avon at Saltford. For details, see Page 23.

The volunteer maintenance team keep Scout HQ shipshape

FFECTIONATELY known as “The Scout Hut” by many in the community, over the last 115 years, things have changed and it is no longer a hut. Continued investment by the Scout group has seen the building grow into what is today a fantastic community asset used not only by the Scout group but also many other community groups. One of the pictures here shows the hut in the 1960s surrounded by long-gone poplar trees, the other 50 years later, doubled in size. Many people comment on the way 1st Keynsham Scout HQ is maintained - that is all thanks to our section where the average age is 75 years! Yes, it is our volunteer maintenance team (the oldest member being 93 years young!) Meeting every Monday morning, the team have an ability to share stories, eat biscuits but above all turn their hand to any challenge that will result in Scouts running smoothly in the HQ. In previous lives they have been mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, BT engineers, in the quarrying business working in

Africa, professional footballer, BBC technician fitting the first TV screens on ships for radar, oil rig technician, gas fitter, manager of a building supplies company, administration manager for a worldwide company, and even a trainee blacksmith. The life skills they bring to the Scout group are immense and not to be underestimated. Painting, mending archery arrows, sharping knives, repairing equipment, cleaning, ground maintenance, trolley rebuilding, electrical maintenance - the list is endless. Some more challenging projects have been creating a secure caged area for kit and rebuilding a box trailer. If you would like to find out more, and perhaps join the team, they would love to hear from you (and it may help to bring the average age down!). The more that volunteer, the easier the tasks. Why not pop in on a Monday morning at Scout HQ in Ashton Way, grab a biscuit and have a chat. or email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts. org.uk. No previous scouting experience is required.

Farmer Jack celebrates century in style

THE flag was flown on the village church, and the Christmas tree lights were kept on, as most of Compton Dando turned out to help their oldest resident, Jack Carpenter, celebrate his 100th birthday along with family and friends. Farmer Jack, as he is affectionately called, sat at a table, a pile of birthday cards before him, welcoming everyone to his party. Photos showing various aspects of Jack’s life as a dairy farmer at Nutgrove Farm adorned the walls, and a feast was laid on for guests. Jack was born on January 7, 1924, to Thomas and Beatrice Carpenter, then living in Temple Street, Keynsham. They later moved to what is now known as Carpenters Lane in Keynsham, the family being so much a part of the town that the local council named the lane after them. Jack’s father owned a haulage business, not with lorries but shire horses, and they were amongst the first to deliver stone for the building of Fry’s chocolate factory. Thomas and Beatrice had two other sons, Thomas (Tom) and Robert (Bob). Jack was just four years old when his father bought him his first pony, and his love of horses remains to this day. When Broadlands School opened in Keynsham, Jack was one of its first pupils, and some years later when it was under threat of closure, he was among

Jack and Peggy on their 60th wedding anniversary Farmer Jack with daughter Peggy Boucher and son Roger Carpenter. Below, Jack takes centre stage surrounded by most of his family

those who campaigned to stop it happening. Jack’s love of cows began at an early age when he would milk cows for a farmer. His father later bought him a cow, which he milked every day. After a while, she was sold to someone else but was soon returned - as she would not give up her milk to anyone but Jack. Jack met his future wife, Peggy Bates, at a Compton Dando dance, and they were married in 1947, moving to

Nutgrove Farm to help Stanley, Peggy’s dad. In time, along came their daughter Margaret, followed six years later by a son, Roger, who both still live at the farm with Jack. When they moved in, there were 21 milking cows, with Jack bringing along his two shire horses, Dick and Royal, who carried out all the work that a tractor would do today. Jack bought his first tractor later, in 1953, a grey Massey Ferguson. Nutgrove Farm had no

running water at first, and Jack dug two wells in the garden by hand. Mains water came along in 1954, and electricity was installed in 1958. When Peggy’s parents died, she, Jack, Peggy and their family took over the running of Nutgrove Farm. For more than 20 years, Jack and Peggy held annual garden parties to raise money for St Mary’s Church - enjoyable occasions usually attended by most of the village. Jack also ran a weekly whist drive in the village hall for more than 20 years, and still enjoys going with Roger for a game of whist. Each harvest, Jack would supply the harvest loaf that was blessed and then consumed at the harvest lunch in the village hall. He also provided the church with chrysanthemums for harvest decorations. Today Jack still delights in his growing family, with the added joy of his four grandchildren - Lucy, Daniel, James and John - together with his great grandchildren, Jack, Rosie, Megan and Harry.

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

with Transition Keynsham

Artificial intelligence has part to play in climate’s future ARITIFICIAL intelligence gets a bad rap, but, as with all technologies, it’s not the thing itself that’s the problem, it’s how people use it. There’s a growing role for AI in tackling the climate and nature emergencies. AI and Machine Learning (ML) are revolutionising our capacity to collect, complete and interpret huge, complex and disparate datasets on anything from weather patterns to species abundance and human behaviour. AI is being used to accelerate progress towards a low-carbon economy. It’s crunching huge amounts of data in sectors like energy and transport, to help model policy and climate risks. The findings make supply chains and processes more efficient, reduce energy use and optimise transport routes and journeys.

It is used to forecast climate tipping points; a climate emergency early-warning system that projects long-term trends in areas such as sea-level rise, so governments can plan for major climate change-induced changes. AI can also predict extreme weather events like storms, cyclones, floods and wildfires. Scientists monitor ecosystems using satellite technology and machine learning, logging the health of forests and the abundance of animal species. AL and ML are amazing tools in our climate change toolbox and I’m optimistic about the good they can do. But I we need to understand the risks as well as the benefits. AI carries a high carbon footprint because of the huge amounts of energy needed to cool

its data centres. Many AI-powered technologies require rare earth materials. Digging these out of the ground causes enormous destruction to the environment and local communities. And there’s a huge risk that AI could make inequality between richer and poorer countries worse. That’s because most AI technology is being developed by western nations, which could mean the needs of the developing countries are ignored or misinterpreted. We need global governance to make sure AI technologies are developed and used in a way that supports just, fair and inclusive economic development. I’d like to think world leaders were talking about this in Davos, but they probably weren’t. Liz Barling

n BACK TO NATURE

Climate change winners and losers AT last month’s excellent talk by ecologist Pete Cooper on harvest mouse conservation, he was asked by an audience member whether climate change was having an adverse effect on populations of our smallest rodent. His well-considered answer highlighted how complex a question that is, requiring a range of answers. He summarised by saying that, in the north of England and even up into Scotland, populations could increase if winter temperatures rose, as it would improve adult survival rates. But in the south of England, where harvest mice are doing relatively well compared with many declining species, increased winter flooding could adversely affect adult survival rate. The evidence is mounting that climate change is one of the key drivers of nature-loss around the world. As well as placing new pressures on wildlife and habitats, it exacerbates already existing ones. As the climate crisis intensifies, it is likely that its impact on nature will too. The ways in which climate change affects wildlife are often quite complex and interconnected. According to the RSPB, they mostly fall into the following categories: l Changes to the availability of the right climate and environmental conditions l Changes in timings of seasonal events l Changes in the frequency of extreme weather events l Changes in how different species interact with each other l Changes in species communities l Changes in land and sea use and management Although much more research needed, there are a number of trends which indicate that there will be species which benefit from our

Dartford warbler - could be a winner in global warming, dependent on correct habitat being available Photos by Martin Farrell changing climate, and others which could see serious declines and even extinctions in a generation. Spring is arriving around 11 days earlier than 30 years ago and the growing season is around 30 days longer. This is causing birds to nest earlier each year. Birds which until now have been restricted to southern parts of the UK are likely to increase in line with rises in average winter temperatures. These include barn owls, Canada geese, greylag geese, grey partridge, corn bunting and even the nationally rare Dartford warbler, along with other heathland species, all of which could spread further north, given the correct habitat conditions. are also likely to be more increases in continental species such as spoonbills, egrets, Cetti’s warblers and glossy ibis. These could be considered as “winners”, although only time will tell whether these increases can be sustained. The “losers” include seabirds which depend upon reliable supplies of fish during the breeding season. The most serious declines are in birds such as kittiwake, Arctic tern, Arctic skua, puffin and fulmar, which depend on large populations of sand eels to successfully rear their young. Similarly, cold-associated and upland birds such as willow warblers and curlews have also shown significant declines, exacerbated by changes in farming practices and land use. A 2021 report by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) summarises that, overall, a quarter of our breeding bird species appear to be negatively affected and a quarter may be responding positively; the remaining breeding species that have been studied appear relatively unaffected by climate change. The RSPB’s report Nature of Climate Change summarises some of the above impacts and gives examples of how best to respond to them. Measures to mitigate population declines include restoration of wetlands and peat lands, re-afforestation, restoration of wildflower meadows, re-wilding, and re-winding of straightened water courses, which should reduce the severity of flooding further downstream. One thing is certain: unless we can achieve a significant reduction in our carbon emissions over the next 30 years, the future looks bleak for some of our most treasured animal and plant species. Golf club’s support for CRY charity

More people taking the train MORE frequent trains to and from Bristol Temple Meads have boosted passenger numbers. Following the introduction of 30-minute services between Bristol and Westbury - benefiting residents in Keynsham, Oldfield Park, Bath Spa and Freshford (hourly) - Great Western Railway have confirmed a year-onyear increase in passengers in September of 14.4%. There has also been a 15.6% jump in passengers between Bristol and Gloucester benefiting those at Filton Abbey Wood, Bristol Parkway and Yate

- following the introduction of half-hour services on that line. It comes after a £7 millionplus investment from the West of England Combined Authority to introduce more frequent services for the region’s passengers in May 2023. Dan Norris, West of England Mayor, said: “Growing passenger numbers is key to building a thriving, reliable local public transport network in the West of England. “I’m pleased to see the uptake in these half-hourly services benefiting residents in Keynsham

and other brilliant West of England communities.” Mr Norris also cited the successful campaign to keep the West’s railway ticket booths open as a key step in “getting more people out of their cars and onto trains - especially for those shorter everyday journeys - which in turn will help reduce congestion and emissions, and better connect our amazing region.” The new and improved services have been delivered in partnership with GWR plus Network Rail.

OBE honour for Trescothick CELEBRATED cricketer Marcus Trescothick has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List. The Keynsham-born batsman was awarded an OBE for his services to mental health. The former Somerset and England player, who attended Sir Bernard Lovell School in Oldland Common, is a mental health ambassador for the Professional Cricketers’ Association and lead batting coach for England’s men.

Marcus, aged 48, said: “It’s a huge honour to have been awarded an OBE. I was delighted in 2005 when we were recognised as a team with MBEs but this is very special. “I’ve always wanted to let people know my story and to try and raise awareness to help anyone who may be struggling with poor mental health alongside the Professional Cricketers’ Association, so recognition of that work means a lot.”

SALTFORD Golf Club has chosen Cardiac Arrest in the Young (CRY) as its charity to support during 2024. Money raised will help fund heart screenings like the one held at Wellsway School in Keynsham last October. The Wellsway event was set up via the Jack Boulton Memorial Fund, which was created after Jack’s sudden death in 2009 at the age of just 17. The memorial fund is part of CRY, and Jack’s mum June is Saltford Golf Club’s lady captain this year.

To get the ball rolling, a coffee morning in support of CRY will be held at the golf club on Thursday March 7 from 10am. As well as offering coffee and cakes, the event will feature a raffle and will include stalls selling plants, books, toys and clothes. The Wellsway screening of about 200 young people – the fifth held at the school - was enabled by fundraising efforts and donations from the local community to Jack’s memorial fund, which was set up by his parents June and Dave. Every week in the UK, at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. But screening has been shown to lead to an 89% reduction in such deaths.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Kevin Durrant Minister of Keynsham Baptist Church

were created to be ‘ We reliant on others, not just

in our infancy and old age.

VERSES of scripture can be a comfort when we are confronted with life’s challenges. For me, facing the prospect of major surgery a few weeks ago, it was the opening words of Psalm 57 which I clung to: “Have mercy on me, O God……I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the danger has passed.” This image of a mother bird helped me to imagine myself being kept safe beneath God’s protective wings during the operation and the difficult days that immediately followed. However, what soon became clear to me was that those divine wings were made up of many feathers, each one of which represented an individual who showed me kindness and care – whether it was Roni, the ward nurse, who looked after my needs so thoughtfully; or Ros, my wife, without whom I would never have managed at home; or the many friends who sent cards, flowers, and prayers during my convalescence. It was through the love of all these people that God’s covering wings were

experienced, and for that I am very grateful. My concern is that our modern world, with its idolisation of the self-made man and the independent woman, risks undervaluing the essential interdependence of human life. We were created to be reliant on others, and not just in our infancy and old age. Being willing to admit our vulnerabilities and to engage in mutual support is crucial if we are to find true personal fulfilment and create a well-functioning society. Part of offering mutual support involves helping each other find some humour even in difficult circumstances. So, I would like to finish with one of the regular jokes my daughter sent to cheer me up during my weeks of convalescence, in the hope that it cheers you up too, whatever challenges you are facing: A priest, a pastor and a rabbit entered a clinic to donate blood. The nurse asked the rabbit, “What’s your blood type?” “I’m probably a type O”, said the rabbit.

We’ll cut sewage discharges into river

WESSEX Water has revealed plans to cut the amount of raw sewage being discharged into the River Avon at Saltford. The company aims to spend nearly £1 million on reducing the automatic operation of a storm overflow along the river to the east of the village, while also helping to protect wildlife and the environment near its banks. It wants to build new underground storage on a field next to Saltford Rowing Centre off the A4 to hold excess water from combined sewers during heavy storms. The scheme will also include tree and scrub planting in the Saltford area and the installation of two bird boxes. The project is outlined as part of a planning application submitted to Bath & North East Somerset Council, seeking permission for a new access to the field where the subterranean tank will be housed just off the main Bath Road. The new shared entrance would be used by vehicles

arriving to maintain the storage tank, as well as the rowing club, which already uses the area as an additional car park during regattas and other race events, with the existing entrance closed off. Should the application be successful, the five-month project is expected to get under way in May this year. Project manager Andre Laranjeira said: “The new tank will be able to host 50,000 litres of water flows from combined sewers, which carry both foul water from home and businesses and rain run-off, during heavy storms. “This water can later be returned to the sewer and pumped onwards to nearby Saltford Water Recycling Centre for treatment and safe return to the environment. “As well as preventing the sewer system from becoming overwhelmed and potentially causing local flooding, the extra storage will also aim to significantly reduce the

automatic operation of a nearby overflow into the River Avon.” Reports in the Voice last year highlighted readers’ concerns about untreated sewage being discharged in the area after heavy rain. A local angler told us how he had found sanitary towels and wet wipes strewn along the riverbank in Saltford. Then a couple reported seeing sewage being discharged onto a busy Keynsham footpath from a Wessex Water pumping station, resulting in toilet paper, wet wipes, sanitary items and used condoms being caught in the fencing surrounding the facility. They also said they had seen sewage on local playing fields during earlier flooding. For the Saltford project, Wessex Water will team up with Bath Spa University to relocate a population of reptiles, including slow worms and grass snakes, from the site, creating three new turf-covered log piles as places of hibernation for them at the nearby campus.

Wessex Water ecologist Freya McCarthy said: “This collaboration will provide the students with the opportunity to experience practical conservation practices and help them to understand the key principles around how we protect and enhance our local wildlife.’’ With areas of grassland, bramble and a sycamore tree being disrupted by the proposed new access, Wessex Water will also install the bird boxes at the site, as well as replanting tree and scrub within its nearby water recycling centre off Mead Lane, which the company says will provide a biodiversity net gain of nearly 20 per cent. The company has announced it is investing £3 million a month until 2025 to tackle overflows in the region that have previously discharged most frequently. Subject to approval from regulators, Wessex Water also intends to invest £400 million towards reducing overflow operation between 2025 and 2030.

CALLING all local gardeners, crafters and bakers! On Saturday March 23, Keynsham Town Council will hold its Second Annual Spring Show, which will feature over 90 classes across Horticulture, Arts & Handicrafts, Cookery, and a bespoke Children’s category. Our inaugural Spring Show in 2023 was a great success and we look forward to residents once again putting their ‘very best’ to the test. “Last year, we introduced the community to our first-ever Spring Show and we were thrilled with the response - so much so that we immediately knew that the Spring Show had to have a permanent place in the community events calendar,” said Councillor David Biddleston, Keynsham Town Council’s Chair of the Events, Arts, Tourism and Heritage Committee. “We took on board the feedback we received from participants and community members from last year and have expanded the Spring Show with over 40 new classes. We’re looking forward to another excellent community event.” The extensive Horticultural classes have remained this year, while new Cookery classes have been selected to include bread and free-from baking. Alongside this, a new Honey, Preserves and Chutney section has been added. The Art & Handicraft section has also expanded to include photography classes for adults as well as under-18s. Finally, the Children’s section has expanded to include an under-16s class, which will surely bring out the very best in Keynsham’s young people. Alongside the competitive classes, the Spring Show will offer plenty for community members to enjoy, including a meet-and-greet opportunity with everyone’s favourite cheeky rabbit, Peter Rabbit. Spring Show attendees can also visit ‘Pet Corner’ for a chance to meet rabbits, guinea pigs and even a bearded dragon. Face painters will be on hand and craft workshops will be running for the little ones to enjoy. Saltford & Keynsham Flower Club will be attending once again to demonstrate how to arrange beautiful bouquets. The full Spring Show programme including details on competitive classes, and the online registration form can be found on the Keynsham Town Council website, www.keynsham-tc.gov.uk Keep an eye on the Keynsham Town Council Facebook and Instagram feeds for more details and deadlines in the run-up to the show. Keynsham Town Council would like to thank all our businesses and traders who have kindly contributed towards making this year’s event special. Special thanks go to our official sponsors Deli@Keynsham, Redfern Osteopaths, Savour, Smart Computers, Wards Solicitors and Wild About Flowers. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY The Memorial Park soon after opening in the 1950s

How our beloved Memorial Park was born IN 1947, after several years of discussion, Keynsham Urban District Council (UDC) bought the lower part of the former Abbey precinct to create a park in the centre of Keynsham. The town had no First World War memorial, so the intention was to incorporate a lasting recognition of the sacrifice of the fallen of both world wars. Over the next few years, various plans were produced and work started on the first phase in 1949. On the west (High Street) side of the Chew, the land ran from Back Lane to the river and included the disused colour mill and the WI hut nearby. To the east of the river, significant work was involved in raising the ground level, and material from the demolition of the wartime blast walls and clinker brought from Wick was used for this. A further 13 acres to the north were bought in 1949 and this included the area where the Abbey remains can now be seen. Work included grading the slope and installing tennis courts. It was decided in 1951 that the park would be known as Keynsham Memorial Park. A body of war memorial trustees, separate from the council, also had to approve the plans, and it was agreed that proposals for a set of memorial gates should proceed. In August a contract for the gates, with associated walls, paving

The Memorial Park gates, with the town hall behind, probably during the 1970s and so on was awarded in the sum of £2,718. Work was completed within a year and the formal dedication of the memorial by the vicar of St John’s, Reverend Trevor Wright, took place on 10th August 1952. The park was now officially open. Gradually, facilities were improved and the park extended. By the early 1960s a bowling green had been added and a stylish and award-winning bandstand erected on the site of the old mill. In 1966 the park was split by the construction of the Keynsham bypass, with its 150ft (46m) span reinforced concrete bridge over the Chew. Anglers were catered for when, in 1967, the council allowed free fishing for all in the lower park, with the Keynsham Angling Association retaining exclusive rights at the north end.

The park’s original bandstand, since replaced

The floods of 1968 left the park in a sorry state and the damage caused took a year to rectify. Repairs were carried out at the same time as the extension of the park to the south after the UDC bought more land at Dapps Hill, previously the site of The Pines and Grove Cottage. As part of the improvements that year, a waterwheel was rescued from a derelict mill in the Chew valley and installed in the location of one of the original wheels. The park was further extended in 1971 on the south side of the Bath Hill bridge following the demolition of Fairfield Terrace, the Mission Chapel and Woodbine Steps, with riverside paths created and lighting installed throughout the park. The overall design and layout of this extension was the

work of the renowned English landscape architect Dame Sylvia Crowe, who was responsible for many prominent gardens across Britain. Over the last 50 years there have been further changes to maintain facilities and to accommodate new recreations such as skateboarding. The lake in the lower park was altered in the 1990s, and the unique bandstand had to be replaced in 2007. Various art features, including the crocodile, have appeared, created by both professionals and amateur groups. Few would disagree that the Memorial Park has become one of Keynsham’s best-loved attractions, and as the venue for the annual Music Festival, it hosts the most popular event in the town. PEN TO PAPER The Sandwich Run

February, 2024

Such ‘lurid’ shop fronts should not be allowed

I was skulking round the shopping mall in search of a distraction, when the odours and aromas sent my nose a call to action, the idea of something good to eat was quickly gaining traction, so I welcomed the distraction, and decided I would stay. In just a second, I was beckoned by a shop with a selection that inspired a sense of purpose and a change in my direction, of its sandwiches there seemed to be an infinite collection that demanded my inspection without any more delay. There was chicken mayo, tuna mayo, chocolate and chorizo, there was green tomato chutney, onion marmalade and miso, there were plenty on display, and many others still to see, so, I continued to explore this most extraordinary array. There was pastrami, pink salami, tapenade and yellow chilli, enchilada, empanada, and a spicy piccalilli, curly kale, Wensleydale, even fish finger and philly, things were getting pretty silly, but I couldn’t walk away. There was guarana, mashed banana, chilli bean, and wild cherry, there was smoky cheese and mushy peas and toasted goji berry, there was ham and English mustard, even Madagascan custard – I confess to getting flustered by this baffling buffet. So, I recalled the days of yore before these latest incarnations, when the pick of sandwich fillers matched the choice of TV stations, when a cheese and pickle sarnie was a cause for celebration, and a ‘brie and quinoa pitta’ was impossible to say. But now… there’s roasted lamb and gooseberry jam, and spam and pepperoni, mushroom pate, mackerel satay, mayonnaise, and macaroni, now there’s camembert and gruyere and melted mascarpone, and a racy garlic paste for keeping vampires at bay. Now there’s chicken legs, and pickled eggs, and deep-fried avocado, now there’s fillet steaks, and chilli flakes, and slow-cook beef stifado, now there’s anchovies from Banchory, and clams from Colorado – a selection to impress the most professional gourmet. So, on concluding my review and giving in to the temptation, I was sure a bacon butty would secure my admiration, when at once I was confronted by another complication – where a million different flavoured crisps stood proudly on display.

repaint their entire frontage to comply with planning regulations. A further issue is that these shops are devoted to selling goods which are entirely against Government healthy eating recommendations. I am aware that this is something that cannot be legislated about, but it does seem a pity. Personally I think that the various charity shops are much better! Hazel Powe Editor’s note: We approached Bath and North East Somerset Council for a comment about this issue. In response, Councillor Matt McCabe, cabinet member for built environment and sustainable development, said: “We have received a complaint about Dyana Mini Market and we are looking into whether there has been a breach of advertisement control.”

The treasured gift of song

Beavers sing for residents of Kingfisher Lodge

JUST before Christmas, Beavers from our Arcadia and Herschel Colonies made Christmas cards and decorations for each of the 60 elderly residents at Kingfisher Lodge in Saltford. Each card and gift was individually named for the recipient and signed by the Beaver that made it. Dave Lucas, assistant for Arcadia Beavers, said they all had great fun making these items. On the last meeting of term, they went to Kingfisher Lodge with their Leaders and sang well-rehearsed Christmas songs to the residents, which everyone enjoyed. Over the next few weeks, the Beavers will be looking at safety, Burns Night and cooking pancakes! Our Beavers meet weekly in term time –

Arcadia is Saturday 9am-10am and Herschel is 6.30pm-7.30pm. We do have a waiting list but please get in touch if you are interested in registering your child. Additionally, if you would like to gain some experience of working with young people, then please come forward - both our colonies are very short of adult support. We do give priority on our waiting list to any children of parents/grandparents willing to get involved with the leadership team. We are a fun and friendly group and love to get involved with the community and activities as well as the young people. Volunteering is always impressive on a CV when looking for a new job. n KEYNSHAM WALKERS ARE WELCOME OUR first outing of 2024 was a fivemile circular walk from Keynsham to Bitton railway station and back. After a crisp but cold week, the day of the walk saw heavy overnight rain and windy conditions. Despite this, 29 eager walkers turned up raring to go. After setting off from the Memorial Park gates, we walked through the park to the marina. From there, we crossed the fields to the cycle path and onto Bitton railway station, where we stopped for refreshments. We then made our way to the dramway and followed the river back to Keynsham. Conditions were boggy and slippery in places, and evidence of the recent flooding was apparent along the river, with debris in the fields and in trees. Our next walks (subject to change due to weather and conditions) are as follows: Sunday February 18: Meet at the Fox & Hounds car park at 10am to catch the Dial a Ride minibus to Crews Hole. We shall walk the six miles back to Keynsham along the banks of the River Avon, stopping for refreshments on the way. A donation of £5 towards transport

Boggy trek along the dramway costs would be appreciated. Sunday March 17: Meet at the Fox & Hounds car park at 10am to catch the minibus to Timsbury for a four-mile circular walk. BOOKS OF THE MONTH

31

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Any Human Heart William Boyd Written in 2009 in the style of a journal, this is a beautifully crafted book. The journal is written by Logan Mountstuart and covers most of the early 21st century. Logan is a complicated character and at times unlikeable, but he soon wins you round again. He is born in South America in the 1900s and his life is at times ordinary and extraordinary. He goes to Oxford, becomes a writer, a spy and an art-dealer. Throughout his career, some of the most famous people of the century cross his path, including Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. However, as a friend, father and husband, he makes many mistakes, but it is a journey deep into a “very human heart”. I loved this book, and it was very easy to read as it is in a journal format. William Boyd is such an excellent writer that at times we can forget this is fiction.

Heartache at Blackberry Farm Rosie Clarke How about getting swept away by a saga? Libraries label books ‘sagas’ that are historical, romantic novels. They are usually set in wartime

and revolve around women. This book is set in Cambridgeshire in 1941 and is a gripping read. It centres on the Talbot family, who live at Blackberry Farm. Both sons are at war but before John left, he promised to marry Faith. Then Faith finds she is about to have baby, which causes problems at home. She turns to Lizzie for support at Blackberry Farm. However, a horrible tragedy occurs, and the Talbot family must rally around and unite while still under the shadow of war.

Wild Swans

Three Daughters of China Jung Chang To coincide with Chinese New Year, here is a modern classic. Wild Swans explores the stories of three generations of women against the background of key events in China’s history. The book begins with the author’s grandmother who, from the age of two, had bound feet and was “given” to a high-ranking warlord in her late teens. On his death, when she was 24, she was eventually freed to marry a doctor. Then the story moves to the author’s mother and life under the Communist Party of China and Mao Zedong’s Red Army. The last section is about the author herself. Chang was a teenager when the Cultural Revolution started, and her father

was persecuted, with Chang being sent to the countryside for education and ‘thought reform’. During this time, Chang began to have doubts about the regime. This is an extraordinary book - a moving account of family life in China from 1909 to 1991 and the tumultuous events which shaped the nation, but also one which is uplifting and full of bravery shown by the three generations of women.

Children’s Fiction

Fergal in a Fix Robert Starling 2024 is the Chinese Year of the Dragon and here we meet Fergal the little dragon. He is a happy chap but today he is off to Dragon Camp. He is worried – what if doesn’t meet any friends? Will he be any good at all the wonderful activities? If he tries his best, perhaps that may help. So, he tries fire-breathing, lairbuilding and cookery, but still he could not make any friends. Find out what wise advice the camp leader gave Fergal to get him out of his fix!

The Cloak of Feathers Nigel Quinlan This delightful book is for all of us who love a good festival. Every hundred years in the magical town of Knowmealldown, fairies known as the Good Folk join the villagers for the Great Festival. It is a time of merriment,

enchantment and a joyous time – well, it is supposed to be! The organisation is down to Brian Nolan and he is facing a run of bad luck. To add to his woes, the Folk Princess has been stolen. Can he rescue her in time so as not to incur the anger of the Folk King and Queen? This is a fun book, full of humour and organisational chaos with a hint of magic.

KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Winter sleep before the return of spring

A

S we all know, winter has thrown storms, floods and now freezing weather at us, so Keynsham In Bloom is keeping a low profile until we warm up a little. The only work being carried out is moving our Poundland container to the right of St John’s Church main gate. This is to minimise any damage to the plants and give extra colour to our parish church. Our Pocket Park is still slumbering but there are signs of life breaking through the surface. Work was due to start this month. We still await the extra topsoil from Bath and North East Somerset Council and then we can progress with the planting of donated shrubs, flowers and insect-friendly seeds to build a bee highway in the High Street triangle flowerbed. Our gold-standard Keynsham Station is awaiting the go-ahead from GWR for a colourful mural on the wall of Platform 1, and

Keynsham in Bloom volunteers will be starting work tending the containers and flowerbeds shortly. Keynsham Spring Show returns to the Scout headquarters on March 23, and KIB will be running a stall again. Last year’s show was a great success, so don’t forget to

visit and enter your prize flowers or edibles. There will also be many stalls as well as our own. We are a happy band of volunteers and if you can spare a little time you would be made very welcome. My email address is catherinemarywoodman@gmail.

Plan to turn offices into flats opposed PLANS to convert offices into four flats on the Wellsway Road have been opposed by Keynsham Town Council. Mace Systems Ltd has applied for prior approval from Bath & North East Somerset Council. But the town council’s planning committee agreed to formally object to the application concerning Wellsway House, which is near the junction with the Bath Road. The committee stated: “Small office space should be retained in this employment nucleus of Keynsham town. “Employment opportunities are important for our community, and the loss of more offices to dwellings should be refused. Hence, the change of use should not be permitted.” But Mace Systems Ltd said the property has been vacant since the end of July, which satisfied the threemonth qualifying period for the conversion. It said the site has six parking spaces accessed via a narrow lane. These spaces would be retained for residents of the four flats. “The site is not far from the site to the town centre, and bus routes along Bath Road means that some of the flats could effectively be car-free. “The residential use will result in less vehicular movements than the re-establishment of an office use, which had up to 11 employees when the building was last in full use. “In regard to the site access, the proposal would not result in a material change in the character of traffic in the site’s vicinity.” A decision from B&NES Council is due soon.

MUSIC

Feast of music at cafe concert Trio Paradis, right, and below, audience members at a previous cafe concert TRIO Paradis will highlight the work of women composers at their regular café concert in Keynsham this month. The players - Jacquelyn Bevan on piano, Lisa Betteridge violin and Linda Stocks cello – will perform at St John’s Church Hall on Friday February 23. The programme, called Daughters of the Muse, will feature music by composers including Germaine Tailleferre, Lili Boulanger, Pauline Viardot, Rebecca Clark (Dumka) and Rosalind Ellicott. It has been devised to mark International Women’s Day on March 8. The trio performs at the church hall on the last Friday of each month (except December), with the music starting at 1pm.

MP faces close fight says poll THE fate of Tory MP Sir JacobRees Mogg’s seat hangs in the balance at the next general election, according to a new poll. YouGov’s poll, commissioned by Conservative Britain Alliance and first released in the Telegraph, is based on interviews with over 14,000 voters to model a result for each constituency in Great Britain. It predicts a Labour landslide if the election was held today, with the party winning 183 more seats than they did in 2019. The poll had the Tories holding onto the new North East Somerset and Hanham constituency — by only one per cent. It puts the Tories on 33% of the vote and Labour on 32%. YouGov’s director of political analytics, Dr Patrick English, said: “I would be very worried if I were Jacob Rees-Mogg looking at this — a one-point margin on this kind of model is effectively saying the whole thing is a tossup, and that either side could very realistically win.” Mr Rees-Mogg represents North East Somerset, which will be substantially altered by boundary changes, losing most of the district east of Paulton and Hanham, to become North East Somerset and Hanham. POETRY CORNER Love is in the Air! Romance is in the air this month Valentine’s day is near! When cards appear with loving words, Affection shown quite clear. A secret kept and sent by post Containing just a clue. From one with admiration Declaring love for you. BUT Not everyone receives a card, And disappointment’s here. The one you thought who loved you Is not so true you fear. But one love can be shared by all, The love filled with God’s grace. A love that lives within our heart And shines upon our face. KEYNSHAM GIRLS’ BRIGADE

Helping girls to flourish KEYNSHAM Girls’ Brigade meets at the Key Centre, Charlton Road (term time only) on a Tuesday evening from 6pm to 7.30pm. It accepts girls from age four to 15 years and subscriptions are £2 a week. The girls gain badges for activities including craft, team games, cookery, gardening and environmental concerns, which complement the awards they receive. As a Christian organisation, the brigade look at Bible stories and learn about Christian festivals, and their work is often displayed in the Key Centre and Victoria Methodist Church.

Being involved in the local community is very important to the brigade, and the girls help to maintain part of the garden in front of the Baptist church as well as planting out containers for distribution to local care homes. Last year, their efforts were rewarded when they won the South West Bee Bold community award for work in learning about and increasing the number of bees and other pollinators in our area. SALTFORD LAWN TENNIS CLUB

keynshamvoice

We want to make tennis accessible for all SALTFORD LTC are delighted that, due to the hard work of the inclusive tennis team, their comprehensive coaching programme now includes three new sessions: walking tennis, a Parkinson’s walking tennis group, and inclusive tennis for young people. Walking tennis is suitable for those recovering from long-term injuries or longterm health conditions, postnatal mothers and complete beginners. The walking tennis group plays on a Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 10.45am, while the Parkinson’s tennis group is on Thursday from 10.45am to 11.30am. Numbers for the Parkinson’s group fluctuate due to the nature of the condition and some members having to rely on others for transport. The club have identified the transport issues and are looking at ways to rectify this. In October, the club hosted an inclusion open day for disabled, d/Deaf and neurodivergent children and their siblings. The event was led by Jonny Fenner, development manager of Access Sport, a national charity that kindly provided training for all the volunteers involved in the event. Seven enthusiastic young people took part in adapted games and creative drills using specialist equipment that enabled them to learn new skills and enjoy tennis. Helen Abbott from Avon Tennis attended and was impressed with the skills on display and the enthusiasm of participants and volunteers. Following the open day, the club held six taster sessions on Saturday afternoons and, due to the positive response, they have continue in the New Year. Inclusive tennis sessions wildl be held on Saturdays from 1pm to 1.45pm. The price of each session is £5 per family, including

Having fun at the club’s inclusion open day

refreshments. Siblings are welcome to join in. Although the club are making great progress in making tennis accessible for all, they recognise that this is the start of a new venture and they still have a lot to learn. If you or a group that you belong to have any ideas on how the club can improve accessibility at the club and cater for your needs, please contact Andy Gray (agraytenniscoaching@ gmail.com) who will be happy to discuss any suggestions you have. Andy is excited about the challenge of adapting his tennis coaching skills to make tennis more accessible and inclusive at

Saltford LTC and proud to be able to introduce new courses to meet the needs of the community. If your New Year’s resolution was to get more active, Saltford LTC can assist you. They have a comprehensive coaching programme for all ages and abilities, and a cardio fitness session on Saturday mornings, starting at 9am, which is open to everyone whatever their level of fitness. Non-members can also hire courts and floodlights via their website. If you have any queries, please email sec.saltfordtennis@gmail. com or visit their website https://clubspark.lta. org.uk/SaltfordTennisClub

KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

Guide dog Delsie pays a visit as charities benefit IT was a busy time at Keynsham Bowling Club in the lead-up to Christmas. Firstly we held our Christmas party, when more than 60 members welcomed back musical duo the Two of Clubs, who entertained us with sounds from the 60s and 70s. They have already been booked for Christmas 2024. Festive food was provided by three of our ladies, Jan Isles, Pam Rose and Gill Hiscock. A few days later, a similar number gathered in the clubhouse for what was a new venture - a morning of carols, mince pies and hot toddy. One of our members, John Carne, introduced the carols, along with a few seasonal jokes, whilst

we were accompanied by a guest, Owen Cole, playing his keyboard. After the mince pies and the toddy, we welcomed representatives from two charities for the cheque presentations. Each year our two captains nominate a good cause to support. Ladies’ captain Lynne Pearce chose Brain Tumour Support in memory of much-loved member Ed Crockford, while men’s captain Carm Riccio picked Guide Dogs UK. Unfortunately, Carm was unwell and unable to attend, so his place was taken by his successor as men’s captain, Steve Coles. Our photograph shows, from left to right, Steve, Julie, a Guide Dogs’ puppy raiser and also a bowler at the club, Lynne, and

Jayne Mallard, from Brain Tumour Support. Keeping her eye on events is 13-month-old guide dog Delsie. During the year, the club raised £500 for each charity, and Steve,

as chair of the Western Power Benevolent Society, had an extra £2,000 to top up the donations. This meant each charity received £1,500.

KEYNSHAM TOWN FC

Forward Brandon Oputeri has been amongst the goals recently

Winger Theo Jeremy in full flight for the Ks against Bitton

Young talent start the year in good form KEYNSHAM Town’s young first team has entered the new year in good form as they battle to move away from the relegation places in the Toolstation Western League Division One. Boxing Day saw local rivals Brislington, lying in third place in the league, visit Crown Fields. But it was the Ks who looked more like the side at the top of the table, as they turned in a commanding performance to run out comfortable 2-0 winners. Keynsham’s goals came from their two leading scorers, Joe Davis and Jemar Thomas. After their next two away games at Bristol Telephones and Warminster Town fell victim to our wonderful British weather, the Ks followed up on their Boxing Day win with a convincing 5-2 victory over Hallen on a bitterly cold Tuesday evening at Crown Fields. They came from behind twice, with goals from Jemar Thomas

There’s plenty of football for both the men’s and ladies’ sections to look forward to at Crown Fields over the next few weeks: Saturday February 3: Men’s reserves v Worle, 2pm Saturday February 10: Men’s first team v Bishop Sutton, 3pm Sunday February 18: Ladies’ first team v Abingdon United, 2pm Sunday February 25: Ladies’ first team v AFC Bournemouth, 2pm Saturday March 2: Men’s first team v Wincanton Town, 3pm Tuesday March 5: Men’s reserves v Stockwood Wanderers, 7.45pm Even if you can’t make it in person, you can keep up to date with the Ks’ fortunes in next month’s Keynsham Voice. (two), Joe Davis, Brandon Oputeri and Theo Jeremy. However, the fates were against Keynsham four days later when they hosted another high-flying neighbour in Bitton. The Ks were deservedly 2-1 ahead going into the last 20 minutes after a brace by Joe Davis as his fine form continued. The game was then halted after an innocent clash near the touchline resulted in a serious injury to Keith

Kearney of Bitton, which was later diagnosed as a dislocated knee. The medical staff, under guidance from the emergency services by telephone, decided it would be unwise to move him on to a stretcher and off the field so that the game could continue. The referee gave it half an hour, but with an ambulance still awaited and the freezing temperature, he had no choice but to abandon the game.

Fortunately the club understand that Keith’s operation was a success and hopefully he will make a full recovery. Keynsham Town FC is always keen to support local charities, with their walking football section particularly active in this regard. The club made a collection and donated their raffle proceeds at their Boxing Day game on behalf of two fantastic charities – the Jessie May Trust and Children’s Hospice South West. The generous support from a bumper attendance of 204 on the day raised over £130, meaning that overall the club has raised more than £750 for these two worthy causes. The Ks reserves have maintained their mid-table position in the Uhlsport Somerset County Premier Division, whilst similarly the club’s ladies’ first team are also midway in the league going into the last four months of the season.

FRY’S BOWLING CLUB

43

Tasty tribute as John hits 90 John Naish’s party featured this cake capturing him in action

THE main bowling season may have finished, but that hasn’t slowed Fry’s Bowling Club down, with a number of events taking place at the end of 2023. After several members attended a defibrillator training course hosted by Bath and North East Somerset Council and presented by the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) in the summer, the club decided to pursue the possibility of holding a further training session at our club, where several other members could benefit from this extremely important subject. This was eventually secured for late October. Invitations were sent

to fellow bowlers from Fear Indoor Short Mat, plus Henleaze Bowling Club, which had recently bought a defibrillator and was in desperate need of training. With the club situated adjacent to Fry’s ladies’ netball courts, several of their members also attended. Such was the demand for the training that it was decided to move the venue from Fry’s clubhouse to a larger room at the Somerdale Pavilion. Two one-hour sessions were delivered by Carlota Appleby, public education officer of GWAAC, assisted by three colleagues from the air ambulance team.

Following on from this successful event, Fry’s have chosen GWAAC as their nominated charity for the forthcoming year. In September, the club hosted a successful race night, and in late October, the club hosted a 90th birthday party for John Naish. A well-attended celebration was enjoyed by all, with an excellent cake capturing John in action provided by Pete and Mary Buck, with the buffet courtesy of Carol Grenfell. November saw the club’s short mat installed in the clubhouse. This has proved popular, with five sessions being run during the week, attracting a mix of those

familiar with the short-mat version and those giving it a go for the first time. Christmas saw our annual coffee and mince pies morning, and the first weekend of the new year saw a beetle drive and American supper. The winter has also been busy for our maintenance team, with work taking place on the green to improve the playing surface, along with a new patio area outside the clubhouse, courtesy of a grant from Keynsham Town Council. The club’s winter activities continue through to April, when Fry’s will be ready for the upcoming outdoor season.
