Aldi reveals plans for supermarket on the A4 ALDI has unveiled proposals to build a supermarket on the A4 Bath Road in Keynsham. The discount store chain has earmarked a site next to the Esso garage which would be accessible from World’s End Lane to the north, as well as Bath Road from the south. Aldi said the store would be built on an “unattractive brownfield site that currently only contains derelict storage buildings.” It would create up to the equivalent of 40 full-time jobs. The site would offer more than 100 customer parking spaces, with free parking for 90 minutes. They would include accessible bays and parent-and-child spaces. There would also be four electric vehicle charging points, with the possibility of providing more in the future. Aldi said the site would be sensitively landscaped, and the store would be about 5.5 metres high, designed to “limit the visual impact on neighbours as much as possible.” Sustainability measures would include solar panels and air source n Turn to Page 3

Aldi plans store on the busy A4 road How the proposed Aldi store on the A4 would look

n From Page 1 heat pumps. Aldi said its stores typically receive three to four deliveries a day which are timed to avoid busy periods. Delivery times and routes would need to be approved by B&NES Council before the store could open. A construction traffic management plan, detailing how construction vehicles would reach the site, would also need to be agreed. The nearest supermarket to the site is Waitrose, off the Broadmead roundabout on the A4. The company said: “Unlike other supermarkets, Aldi is not a one-stop shop. Its smaller stores focus on packaged and convenience goods, complementing rather than competing with existing local shops and services.” The store chain said it would “carefully consider” all feedback received during a community consultation that ended on December 17.

“This will play a vital role in shaping the planning application we submit to Bath and North East Somerset Council in the subsequent months.” The plans have attracted a mixed reaction from people posting on Facebook. Some welcomed the prospect of the new store, with one saying: “Cheaper affordable shopping than Waitrose and save fuel driving to Bath or Longwell Green.” But others were concerned about extra traffic being generated on the A4 Bath Road, where recent development in the area has created new housing, a large new recycling centre and a new nursing home. A Saltford resident said: “I’d welcome a cheaper-priced supermarket locally, but the entrance/exit needs to be accessed via the back, not onto the actual Bath Rd, which is chaos anyway, especially with their potential plans of having a bus lane.”

Another said: “Love Aldi but that location is horrendous ... turning out onto the Bath Road. Saltford is clogged up with traffic as it is. You would need traffic light management to get in and out of it.” One person said it was already very difficult to turn right out of the Hygge Park housing estate and to drive out

of the Esso garage. “As great as it would be to have more choice of supermarkets, they need to think about the traffic first.” Another person commented: “The traffic at the bypass roundabout is bad enough as it is. Will be quicker for me to drive to Longwell Green, even though it’s about 2 miles from my house.”

Ofsted praises ‘happy and safe’ school CASTLE Primary School in Keynsham is a “happy and safe place for pupils to learn,” according to Ofsted inspectors. They gave the school in Newlands Road a ‘good’ rating overall, while its behaviour and attitudes, and early years provision, were rated as ‘outstanding’. It was the first time Ofsted had inspected the school since it converted to an academy in 2019 and joined The Partnership Trust. Ofsted had previously said the school needed to make improvements. After the latest inspection, pupils were commended for their exceptional behaviour. “They are polite to adults and their peers. Pupils behave impeccably at social times and in lessons. “Older pupils provide strong role models for others. Pupils’ attitudes are exemplary. They are a credit to the school.” The inspectors said the school prioritises developing pupils’ character and that their personal and academic achievements begin in early years. “Pupils enjoy a wide range of school clubs such as sports, yoga and chess. They

are proud of their responsibilities as school captains, librarians and play leaders.” Ofsted praised the school – which had 328 children on its roll at the time of the inspection – for creating a wide range of opportunities for pupils’ wider development. “Pupils know that judging others by background, gender or race is wrong. They have a clear sense of right and wrong. The school is successfully growing a community of responsible and kind young citizens.” Ofsted was impressed with the parent community’s response to the visit, and acknowledged that parents are exceptionally

happy with the school, saying “they welcome the school’s caring and nurturing environment.” Headteacher Chris Cannings thanked the entire staff team and volunteers, some of whom are no longer part of the school, who contributed to Castle Primary’s improvement journey over the last five years. He said: “The report reflects the efforts of the children, staff and whole community, as well as the significant investment from St John’s Foundation in recent years. We are pleased the local community has the school it deserves.”

James wants to challenge Sir Jacob at next election KEYNSHAM resident James Coldwell has thrown his hat into the ring to be Labour’s parliamentary candidate for North East Somerset & Hanham. James, 37, grew up in Somerset and lives in Keynsham with his wife and young son. By day, he leads a charity campaign that lobbies big businesses to provide better working conditions for their staff. James recently conducted a survey of small businesses along Keynsham and Hanham high streets to understand the issues facing independent shop owners (see Pages 22 & 23)

As vice chair of North East Somerset & Hanham Labour Party, he is leading the local party’s campaigning efforts in its bid to unseat Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg at the next general election. James says: “Living in Keynsham means I understand the issues people here are facing. It’s about time our community had an MP it can be proud of, and that’s what I intend to be. “It’s surely not too much to ask to have an MP who is local, hardworking, down to earth - and full time.”

Among local members encouraging James to put himself forward is Adrian Inker, a Labour councillor for Keynsham South ward for 20 years in the 1990s and 2000s. Adrian said: “James is a person with integrity, a quality sadly lacking in a lot of our politicians today. “As MP, James would listen, he would be accessible and he would give Keynsham residents a real voice in parliament.” Labour members are expected to choose their candidate by the end of February, as the party prepares for a general election this year.

NEWS down for Please help us catch these thieves Eyes a great night WE continue to suffer with garages us being in a remote station, when being attacked, doors being forced and items stolen. Some of these break-ins have occurred at secluded blocks, where the offenders have used the cover of night to their advantage. These locations lend themselves to these sorts of attacks, where very basic tools are used. It is difficult for us to be in the right place at the right time without the help of our communities, who are our eyes and ears on the ground. If you see or hear anything that you believe is out of the ordinary, please report it to us either by calling 101 or, if you believe an offence is being committed, then on 999. If you have any information about these incidents, this can be reported anonymously via Crimestoppers, through their website or via their phone number, 0800 555 111. We need your help to try to identify the offenders, secure evidence, and bring the culprits to justice. n As many of you will be aware, we

with PC James Evans have been based in the civic centre near the High Street for several years. As a police service, we are looking to reduce our external footprint and work more closely with our response teams, who are currently based at the police centre on Ashmead Road in Keynsham. In the new year, our team will be moving to this location to work alongside the response officers and other departments. The idea is that this will promote the sharing of information so we can look together at what our current community issues are and how we as teams can support each other. There is a cost implication to

the police service has to continue to try to make financial savings without reducing the service we provide. Currently we do not have a front desk in the civic centre, so this will bring us closer to our serving public who come along wanting to engage with us. The overall aim is to provide a better service. I believe this will help to achieve that. n We are looking to set up more beat surgeries on Keynsham High Street, as well as going into coffee shops so we can be approached to talk about local issues. We hope these more comfortable surroundings will promote engagement. Dates, times and venues will be advertised on our website, and posters will be displayed in the shops concerned. n We have been increasing foot patrols in the High Street and other local areas to help combat antisocial behaviour we have suffered in recent months. We will continue to do so into the new year. n Neighbourhood Watch: See Page 11

New attractions NEW attractions helped to boost the success of this year’s Keynsham Winter Festival. Crowds flocked to the town centre to celebrate the official start to the holiday season, as the High Street, Market Walk and Temple Street buzzed with festive cheer. New features this year included Father Christmas’s grotto, sponsored by MG Estate agents. South West Lions Club once again pulled a favour from the man himself, ensuring Santa was ready to hear everyone’s Christmas wishes. The grotto was a big hit with young and old alike, and it will become a regular feature in years to come. Keynsham Leisure Centre hosted several popular stalls and will hopefully do so in future. Other new attractions included princesses from Frozen, a climbing wall (provided by Mendip Activity Centre) and a snow fun zone in the MakeSpace venue offer the leisure centre. The brightly lit VeeDubs vans created a dazzling display, and the fire truck provided by Avon & Somerset Fire Brigade allowed many children to live out their fire-fighting dreams. “The feedback we’ve had so far is that the new attractions added something special to this year’s winter festival,” said Katherine Sears, deputy town clerk at Keynsham Town Council and lead organiser of the festival. “People loved all the free meet-and-greets, snow fun zone and the re-introduction of the climbing wall. We also had more of our shops staying open late and a record number of market stalls allowing people to get ahead on their Christmas shopping. We’re thrilled with how it all went.” Councillor Dave Biddleston, chairman of the town council’s events, arts, tourism and heritage committee, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who made this year’s winter festival a success. “The winter festival committee and our dedicated officers worked tirelessly to put on a fantastic event that catered to everyone’s needs. We hope that everyone had as much fun as we did.” The festival committee said it was grateful to all businesses and traders that contributed to the event’s success, with special thanks to official sponsors Argyll Design, Davies & Way, Eveleighs Estate Agents, IJ McGill, MG Estate Agents, Mokka, Olivia’s Boutique, Redfern Osteopaths, Smart Computers, and W&W Memorials. l Photos by Mike May

Party time delight for residents CURO brought some Christmas sparkle to residents at Hawthorn Court Extra Care accommodation in Keynsham. Guests were treated to a traditional dinner, music from singing duo Sian and Rob, and a raffle with prizes donated by builders’ merchants Travis Perkins. Resident Matt Gabriel said: “This is my first Christmas party so I’m looking forward to the dinner and entertainment.” Matt, who is blind, said he loves living at Hawthorn Court. “The staff are friendly and we all get on well together, so I feel very lucky.” Curo’s Extra Care housing is designed for older people who need more support than sheltered housing offers but who would still like to be

independent. Many of the residents find it difficult to get out and about, so the Christmas event allowed them to share the season of goodwill. “This is the only celebration some of our residents will get this year,” said Clare Pollock, Livewell Officer.

“Many of them have no family to visit them on Christmas Day, so this means so much to them. We feel proud that we can bring some magic into their lives.” As well as Hawthorn’s residents, older people in the area could also come along. “We’re getting into the

Christmas spirit,” said Clare Hudson, who lives in a nearby bungalow. “I’m here with friends and it’s nice to meet all the staff as well. They’ve gone to a lot of trouble – it’s fantastic. I’m looking forward to watching the band as my husband loves singing.”

Scrutiny row over care home’s future ANY decision to shut a troubled councilrun care home in Keynsham must be made publicly and not “behind closed doors,” councillors have insisted. Charlton House was taken over by Bath and North East Somerset Council in 2020, and a Care Quality Commission report in 2022 rated the home “inadequate.” It found that one person had been left sitting in urine overnight, another had an “unexplained bruise” to their chest, and staff did not call for medical assistance for seven hours after one person had suffered a stroke. The home has since been upgraded to “requires improvement.” The council recently ran a consultation (which ended on December 18) on proposals to close the care home, but it has faced accusations of a “lack of transparency” from one of its scrutiny panels. Council cabinet member for adult services, Alison Born, had not told councillors on the children, adults, health and wellbeing scrutiny panel about proposals to close the care home at its October meeting, despite being asked for an update by Keynsham North councillor Alex Beaumont. Appearing again before the panel on December 11, Ms Born faced calls for any decision on closing the care home to be made in public by the council cabinet rather than by herself as a single-member decision, as is currently planned. Council officers said they had been advised that a single-member decision was

appropriate, but Mr Beaumont warned it would mean the decision being made “behind closed doors.” Councillor Joanna Wright said: “Because this issue has caused so much concern among so many residents, I do think this issue should be called to cabinet as a decision, not as a single-member decision, because there is a lack of transparency.” Ms Born defended her precious appearance before the committee. She said: “It was advertised that there was going to be a consultation process. It was included in the report that there was going to be a consultation process. I mentioned in my verbal introduction that there was going to be a consultation process. “But the consultation wasn’t yet in the public domain and the last thing we wanted was for the residents, the relatives of the residents who were in the homes, and staff who worked in them, to hear about something that had been discussed in the

public domain in the scrutiny panel before they were fully aware of it.” Ms Wright said the panel could have heard her response in a closed session, but council officers said they had been told this was not possible. Councillor Paul Crossley said: “That’s simply not true.” Councillors on the panel voted unanimously to recommend that any decision on the future of Charlton House should be taken by the council cabinet in a public meeting. Ms Born said she would take the issue forward and take advice on it. If the care home is closed down, it would be re-used by the council for “another purpose that meets our priorities,” Ms Born said. The care home’s 10 residents would be offered support to find new accommodation while staff would mostly move to other council-run care homes such as Combe Lea in Midsomer Norton and Cleeve Court in Bath. It is not the first time the scrutiny panel has clashed with Ms Born over Charlton House. At a meeting of the scrutiny panel in January, where Ms Born had delivered an apology for the state of the home, the scrutiny panel’s then chair Vic Pritchard — who had previously called for Ms Born and council leader Kevin Guy to resign over the scandal — said that reports of what had happened in the care home “amounts in my mind to torture.” John Wimperis, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Back to school to give careers advice FORMER students of IKB Academy returned to the Keynsham school to give current students an insight into the world of work. They were among 10 representatives of local employers who took part in a day of mock interviews. Amelia Nicholas, a naval engineer apprentice, was one of three interviewers who are IKB alumni and have gone on to successful apprenticeships. Amelia said she was “grateful for the incredible opportunity to return to IKB Academy, the school and sixth form where I pursued my GCSEs and A-Levels.” She added: “This time, I found myself on the other side of the table, conducting interviews to Year 11 and Year 13 students. “IKB played a significant role in helping me get to where I am today, and having the opportunity to give back to the school was truly an honour. “It was a pleasure

Amelia Nicholas and other employer representatives at IKB Academy interviewing the students and I hope I’ve inspired some with my own journey. I wish them all the best for their futures and the careers that are waiting for them. Thank you IKB Academy.” Amelia works for BMT, a maritime design and technical consulting firm that has offices around the world. She joined the company in September 2020 after completing A-levels

in Product Design and Level 3 Engineering. The mock interviews attracted positive feedback from students. Oscar said: “I was quite nervous beforehand because I didn’t know what to expect, but my interviewer made me feel at ease right from the start, and it was interesting to hear what he did for his job.” Emily commented: “It was

really fun and very helpful preparation for getting a job. My interviewer was really nice and very supportive”. And Issy said: “It was nervewracking but a very rewarding experience”. The other employer representatives who took part were: Ashlea Lane, Wessex Water; Cameron Mackie, Airbus; Candice Spreadbury, Vodafone; Fraser Greenroyd, Buro Happold; George Harrill, Army Reserve Centre; George Skuse, Mott MacDonald; Harry Foy, Mott MacDonald; Mark Allemby, Horstman Defence Systems; and Tatum Stockwell, Vodafone. Careers leader Clare Barclay, who organised the event, said: “Many thanks to the employers who gave up their time to conduct the interviews. This is a fantastic event that is invaluable for our students for moving onto their next steps to gain apprenticeships and jobs. We can never have enough interview practice, can we?”

n KEYNSHAM WALKERS ARE WELCOME

Wreath walk is a creative hit

DESPITE the pouring rain, 27 people turned up on December 10 at the Memorial Park gates for Keynsham Walkers are Welcome’s annual wreath walk, which was the last walk of the year. Armed with secateurs and big sturdy bags, they set off through the park, heading for the fields on the outskirts of town. Under the watchful eye of the walk leader, Dawn, they selectively took cuttings of flora to carry back to the Fear Hall, at which point the rain ceased.

Here Kelvin Bush, who brought some additional greenery including mistletoe, gave a demonstration on wreath making. The wreath rings were provided, along with festive decorations to enhance the look. There were several men on hand to sample and serve the mince pies and mulled wine, which was much appreciated, and the seasonal atmosphere helped make the event very sociable. The participants appreciated the effort that

had gone into organising the event, and several people stayed behind to help clean and get the hall back to its pristine state. Our thanks go to Kelvin and Dawn for organising the event, and the helpers who made it such a success. The group also entered the Christmas tree festival at St John‘s Church, and thanks go the Milla Kenny, Dave Vince and Lin Stone for their efforts in decorating and dismantling the tree. l Christmas Tree Festival: Pages 36 & 37

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Have a say on your policing bill I HOPE you have been having a wonderful festive period. I would like to start the New Year by thanking all the officers and emergency services staff who have worked tirelessly to keep our communities safe over this time. The Police Funding Survey is now live online. I encourage every resident to give their thoughts on my proposal to increase the policing part of the council tax, known as the precept, by £10 a year (that’s the equivalent of 83p per month) for the average Band D household. The survey will close on January 22. Local policing is funded by a combination of people’s council tax (the precept), Home Office funding, and other grants. The precept makes up 41% of police funding and I, as your PCC, am responsible for setting

the amount of money residents contribute to local policing through the precept. You can access the link to the precept survey on the OPCC website, www.avonandsomersetpcc.gov.uk. Last month, my office launched a new volunteer recruitment campaign, looking for members of the public from all backgrounds and walks of life to visit people in one of three custody centres we have in Avon and Somerset, in Keynsham, Patchway and Bridgwater. These volunteer roles are called independent custody visitors, and they perform a vital role in ensuring people who are detained in custody following arrest are aware of their rights and are receiving what they are entitled to. If you can spare two hours per month, at a time to suit you,

to partner with another custody volunteer and undertake a visit, please apply before 18 January. No experience is necessary, just a commitment to seeing fair, efficient and effective policing in our communities. Visit our website and go to the ‘Get Involved’ section to sign up. I urge people to be extra careful when shopping online at any time, but particularly this time of year, as we see online shopping increase in the annual January sales. Many people are looking for bargains after the Christmas period and I warn shoppers: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. To protect yourself from fraud and cyber crime, I advise everyone to follow advice of the Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign: Stop: Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your

Parking charges shake-up PARKING charges based on vehicle emissions may be introduced in Keynsham. Bath & North East Somerset Council is also proposing to extend such charges to all locations in Bath, both on-street and off-street. The charges are also proposed for Midsomer Norton and Radstock - where parking is currently free of charge - to an equivalent level as in Keynsham. Other fundraising proposals include higher parking fees in the district, as the council tries to find an additional £24.53 million for 2024-2025. It says faces “very difficult choices” in the light of squeezed budgets and rising demand. It is consulting on a council tax rise of 2.99% plus an additional 2% for adult social care (making a total rise of 4.99%), additional income of £6.51m and savings of £10.31m. The consultation, which opened on December 15, closes at 5pm on January 15. To respond, go to the council’s budget consultation pages at https://beta.bathnes.gov.uk. Or you can email budget@bathnes. gov.uk or call 01225 396975. Final budget proposals for 2024 to 2025 will be considered by the council on February 20.

Scenes from Keynsham life SINCE that freezing cold snap ended, we’ve been trying not to use the heating, and welcomed the drive to meet with friends not seen since this time last year. Collecting one en route, we discussed our plans for Christmas dinner, exchanging cheeses, continental sausages and a bottle of red Rioja. On arrival at our hosts’ home, the heated room, the coffee mugs and the company were like a warm candle. Our names had been beautifully written in blue, indicating, perhaps, an air of expectancy. Conversation centred on shared values, and memories – old and new… We took home a piece of the conversation cake with us: homebaked, walnut-and-date, drizzled with toffee. Isaac Glynn

Warning to parents on fire craze PARENTS have been warned following reports of children deliberately starting fires in Keynsham. Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is sharing safety advice as videos dubbed by some as the ‘fire trend’ have appeared online. Emily Cook, youth intervention lead at AF&RS, said: “We understand TikTok trends are exciting and viral videos cause intrigue, but fire is always dangerous, and we seriously encourage people to think twice as this trend can cause injuries to you and others around you that could last a lifetime. “If you are worried that someone you know is setting fires, remove the resources they may need - in this particular case, small aerosol cans and toilet roll tubes. “If you see fire being started deliberately, call 999 in an emergency and 101 in a nonemergency to report this.” Anyone worried that their child has an unusual interest in fire can email fire.setters@ avonfire.gov.uk Emily said: “My most important advice is, before following a trend, think of the impact it could have if it goes wrong for reasons out of your control. As always, if you do see a fire, get out stay out and call 999.” For more advice and further information, visit https://www. avonfire.gov.uk/safety-advice/ advice-for-parents/firesetters

KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

Clay shoots still have lots of pulling power

AS we enter 2024, Keynsham Scouts wish to look back and thank everybody who has supported their clay pigeon shoots for the last 30 years. The event was an idea taken forward by Tim Cann and other leaders back in 1994, and it made the local newspaper of the day, the widely loved Keynsham Chronicle. Tim was convinced the shoots could provide much-needed funds for the Scout group, and with Chelwood campsite being the perfect spot, he launched the event. Tim has been proved right, and since 1994 thousand of pounds have been raised to support Scouting in our community. In the beginning the three traps were each operated by one person who sat there all day pulling back the heavy arm, making sure nothing got in the way, and launching the clays on the word “pull”. It was heavy, slow work, building arm muscles and often involved sitting in the cold and rain for hours on end. While Tim (who is still a leader) is no longer actively involved with the clay shoot, he can look back with pride and satisfaction. The modern-day clay shoot can

attract up to 200 people, with five automated traps each firing hundreds of clays at a push of a button, so that young and old, male and female, have all enjoyed taking part. In addition to the formal clay shoots, the Scouts receive tuition on everything from care and proper use of firearms, to the safety of running a range. There is even a Master at Arms badge that can be gained. In an age when guns are often talked about in negative terms, this is the complete opposite. Thank you to our existing sponsors, MK Flooring, Keynsham Hearing Centre, Key Property Lawyers, TREK Bikes Bath and Avalon Guns Ltd - your support has been fantastic. In 2024 the Scout group are hoping to attract record numbers and now want to find a sponsor for a new trap. If this could be you or your business, they would love to hear from you. Just email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk or ring 07714237525. Our next shoot is on March 23 and 24. Details on how to book are available at www.1stkeynshamscouts.org. uk/clay. Shaping the future for housing needs EVERY local authority is expected to have a Local Plan. A Local Plan is a blueprint or masterplan that sets out how future development will be planned for. This covers many aspects, including predicted housing needs. The current Local Plan was adopted by Bath & North East Somerset Council in 2014 but is considered out of date. The next Local Plan is expected to be adopted in 2025 and take us to 2042. Standard calculations show that about 7,000 new dwellings need to be built in Bath and NE Somerset in this period, over and above what already has planning permission. There are 6,000 households on the current waiting list for social housing and 8,000 new jobs predicted to be created in the B&NES area. The steps to prepare a Local Plan are set down in law and are the same for any council of any political complexion. The first step for allocating

housing is to look at sites that have been put forward by developers and landowners. The council’s planners have a legal obligation to consider all sites proposed. In late January, a list of possible sites that could go forward to meet the projected housing need will become public. These “options” are a menu put forward by the planning department which will list where housing could go, not should go. There will be a period of public consultation and then a draft Local Plan will be produced which will eventually go to hearings conducted by an independent planning inspector. It is inevitable that the “options” list will include sites around Keynsham, Saltford, Whitchurch, and Hicks Gate among other sites across the B&NES area. You may ask whether local councillors can make this all go away. The answer is no. Developers would bring these sites back for consideration when the independent inspector leads hearings on the draft plan later in the process. It is better to address the challenges head-on now, with residents declaring what they

think about the suggested options put forward by the planning department, giving sound planning reasons for their views. 2024 is likely to be a worrying period for many. The challenge is great. Your local councillors will be able to help explain the process and how everyone can take part in the public consultation. I have booked Saltford Hall for a public meeting for Saltford residents at 7pm on Friday January 26. The topic will be the Local Plan, the options list, and the protection of green belt at Saltford. Cllr Duncan Hounsell, B&NES ward councillor, Saltford ward

n BACK TO NATURE

Bird-spotting for the tone deaf (like me!)

M

OST bird-watchers seem very good at identification by listening to birdsong, but I am not one of those. However, I (and you of course) can SEE lots of birds in Keynsham Memorial Park throughout the year, including in the middle of winter. The easiest ones are those that stay in one place for an extended period of time, especially in and around the duckpond. Here you will find mallards (the male drakes are the brightlycoloured ones and the female ducks are mostly in shades of brown). The drakes are now in their full breeding plumage. If you have ever wondered where all the drakes go in the summer, they are still there but will have moulted into “eclipse” feathers so they look like the females; breeding plumage uses too much energy to produce, so it is replaced when not needed. Also on and around the pond are moorhens, black-headed gulls and feral pigeons. The moorhens have a yellow/red beak and red “frontal shield”, black plumage and a short black and white tail. Black-headed gulls lose their black head plumage in winter, but are recognisable by their black “eyebrows” and reddish beak. They tend to flock together in winter, so don’t be surprised if you see a dozen or so. Feral pigeons (descended from rock doves) are found wherever a source of food is available, so you will see them where people feed the ducks. They will eat seeds, green leaves and buds, insects and bread, and have variable amounts of grey, white and black plumage with a green-purple gloss. Again they often congregate in groups,

on the grass next to the pond. If you walk along the path above the duckpond, you may see woodpigeons and crows – they seem to tolerate each other quite well. The woodpigeon is the largest pigeon in Europe, so it is easy to identify with its white and purplygreen back of neck, and blue-grey plumage, and is roughly double the size of the feral pigeon. Meanwhile, the carrion crow is usually seen in pairs, has all-black plumage (although I have seen a few with white “paint splashes”), and is omnivorous, so takes advantage of any food scraps left by humans, as well as eating invertebrates, grain and carrion. Cross Chew Bridge (aka

Our meeting on Friday January 12 features The Coombeshead Harvest Mice Project - a wildlife talk with ecologist Pete Cooper. Harvest mice are Britain’s smallest rodents, living among tall grasses and shrubs. They used to be abundant but numbers have reduced due to agricultural intensification and an over-tidying of the countryside. The project hopes to breed and re-introduce these delightful mammals into their historic and newly restored habitats. Venue: Keynsham Baptist Church Hall, BS31 1DS, 7.30pm. Entrance: Avon Wildlife Trust members £3.50, nonmembers £4.50, to include festive refreshments at 7.15pm. All welcome, no booking required. Dapps Hill Bridge) and you could find blackbirds running in and out of the riverside trees – they love winter berries as well as earthworms and snails. The males are all-black with a yellow bill and eye-ring, which makes them easy to identify. The females look more like song thrushes (to which they are related) in their brown plumage and mottled breast. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of a kingfisher flying to and from an overhanging tree branch, catching small fish in the Chew. Males have a long, dagger-shaped bill that is all black, while females have a reddishorange lower bill. They both have

unmistakeable blue and green backs and heads, with orange on face, underbody and legs. That’s one sighting that makes me smile for the rest of the day. Finally, it’s easy to tell a magpie from any other bird in the park, with its black, white and iridescent plumage, long diamond-shaped tail and raucous call. They are usually found in the trees near the railway bridge, and feed on the ground on small vertebrates, invertebrates, seed, carrion and scraps. If I see one, I always try to spot a second one, as the rhyme goes “One for sorrow, Two for Joy”. Happy New Year to all readers and happy birding in 2024. Liz Wintle

Goodbye Joy and Ken, we’ll miss you

A COUPLE who played a big part in village life have said goodbye to Compton Dando. Joy and Ken Webb were joined by about 70 people – bellringers, Keynsham friends, flower arrangers, church wardens past and present, members of the hall committee and the local community association – at a lunch to honour the occasion. John Dottridge thanked Ken for being hall treasurer for the last eight years, as well as being bell ringing captain for St Mary’s Church. Sarah Wilson thanked Joy for all she had done for the church and local community - displays to support the church’s

summer Sunday teas, flower arranging and fundraising. John said: “We will all miss them both. Ken and Joy Webb are moving to the New Forest after 27 years in the village and we all wished them much happiness in their new home.” Joy said: “We have loved living in Compton Dando and made very many friends both in the village and beyond, but health matters told us the very large steep garden, together with a four-bedroom house, was proving too much. “Moving to a bungalow with its flat land should be much better, and we are looking

forward to the adventure of making both garden and bungalow our own.” The couple were presented with gifts that included two paintings of the village, by local artists, and a memory book consisting of photographs of the church bells, village scenes and some of Joy’s flower arrangements. They also received gift vouchers to spend on their new garden. Joy said: “Both of us will miss village life in Compton Dando and all our friends and neighbours.” Ken added: “We are hoping that many will visit us in our new home when the better weather arrives.”

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Credit where credit’s due MANY of us enjoy a bit of television at this time of year. Indeed, during the festive break, you might have seen one of the BBC’s headline offerings: Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster. Like so many shows about animals and plants, David Attenborough’s was made right here in the West of England - to be precise, at Bristol’s world-renowned Natural History Unit. Unlike in years past, today it has become difficult to know which are Bristol’s fantastic TV and radio productions from actually watching or listening to the programmes themselves. Only those “in the know” are aware. Why? Because, sadly, the BBC has erased its mention of Bristol from the end credits of such shows. Remember when they used to proudly state “BBC Bristol”? Not anymore. I think that needs to change. It’s time to credit Bristol again. From the start, the credits showed Bristol back in 1957 when the unit was set up. Its roots were formed in radio. Because the BBC’s West Region in Bristol produced a popular radio series for the Home Service called The Naturalist, the city was well-placed to produce nature TV too. Bristol therefore became the

obvious place to set up the Natural History Unit. The rest, as they say, is history. I certainly felt proud seeing Bristol mentioned in the credits of some classic programmes. Think of shows like Animal Magic, which ran from the 60s through to the 80s. Natural history has always been an important part of children’s TV, sparking the imagination of so many. Chris Packham, who I know through my animal welfare work, saw his career launched in Bristol on The Really Wild Show, which ran for two decades. David Attenborough is today a national, and global, treasure. But back in the 50s, it was the Natural History Unit that allowed him to innovate to become that world pioneer in television. The natural history made in the West has entertained, engaged, and enthralled audiences. We’re globally successful and multi-award-winning in this area. Nowadays it’s not just the BBC but Channel 4 and even Disney who call the West of England home. In fact, 35% of all natural history content globally is made in our part of the world. I have written to the BBC Director General to ask why the BBC decided to sever links with a region which was the birthplace of the Unit.

Metro Mayor Dan Norris writes for the Voice We’re more creative than ever but we’ve been erased! Why, when places like Cardiff and Salford are mentioned by the BBC so often, do they seemingly appear ashamed of Bristol when running their credits? I want our great region to be recognised nationally and across the planet. The Natural History Unit is responsible for some of the most globally successful factual content of the past 60 years. KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Snakestones’ star role in fossil debate

A

MMONITES are a distinctive feature of Keynsham geology and they are a part of our local identity. The myth of a fifthcentury Welsh princess called St Keyna ridding the area of snakes by turning them into these stones is well known. However, there is a true story in which our ammonites were key evidence in a 17th century debate at the Royal Society about the origin of fossils. The St Keyna myth became entwined Carved snakestone from Whitby, Natural History Portrait of Robert Hooke as reconstructed in this when a local person carved fake snake’s Museum Wikimedia Commons (Micktherocktapper) by Rita Greer, 2004 Wikimedia Commons heads on some of them, fooling some academics into believing the heads were real. found a nautilus fossil ‘in one of the dryIt was in 1662 that Joshua Childrey wrote stone walls near Keinsham.’ in Britannia Baconica: ‘At Keinsham in stone Waller sent drawings of this to Hooke quarries, are found stones in the form of and they were presented at a Royal a Serpent, like the Whitby stones ….. the Society meeting in 1687, where he said; difference between them, whereas those at “… concerning stones, as nautili and Whitby want heads, some of these have.’ ammonites lately found near Cainesham Two years later, Dr John Beale, a Fellow of Bridge in Gloucestershire. It’s tough for small businesses, but they THE challenges facing small businesses in Keynsham have been highlighted in a survey of independent traders in the town. It was conducted by James Coldwell, a Keynsham resident and Labour Party member. He visited businesses in Keynsham and Hanham, the two largest town centres in the new North East Somerset & Hanham constituency which will be contested at the next General Election. Sixteen businesses in Keynsham’s High Street and Temple Street responded to the survey, as did 14 traders in Hanham. Mr Coldwell, who is vice chair of North East Somerset & Hanham Labour Party, said: “The survey responses make clear that small businesses face significant obstacles. The cost-of-living crisis has hit high streets particularly hard. “Business owners cited energy costs as the top issue, followed by rising costs for staffing and supplies. These same cost pressures are felt by customers, meaning they have less disposable income, putting further strain on small business margins.” Across Keynsham and Hanham, 80% of businesses surveyed said they believe the high street to be in worse shape now than 10 years ago.

Kelly Yeates, of Savannah Studios in Keynsham, with James Coldwell

Mr Coldwell said: “Many businesses want to see a more joined-up approach between politicians, officials and companies. For example, efforts to reduce car journeys and improve air quality may make sense, but not when they occur at the same time as cuts to bus services. “For businesses, the results have been sadly predictable: a decrease in footfall, with many owners in Keynsham and Hanham reporting fewer out-of-town visitors.” Half of Keynsham businesses said changes to the layout of the High Street, including the cycle lane and the one-way system at Temple Street, have had a lasting negative impact on footfall. One of the town’s traders who responded to the survey was Kelly Yeates, who owns Savannah Studios. She cited parking as the biggest issue her business and others are facing. The tattoo studio moved from High Street to Temple Street in September 2021. She said: “At the moment it’s convenient, because we have 30 minutes’ free parking on both sides of the street.” That, she said, is enough time for customers to have a short consultation or pay a deposit, and for deliveries to be received. But some tattoo appointments can last up to

eight hours, and Kelly said more long-term parking would benefit the town. Kelly said matters were worse in the High Street, especially during the redesign that involved the temporary removal of parking spaces. Although her own business is thriving, with booking up to three months ahead,

she said she felt the closure of some High Street businesses in recent years was at least partly due to a lack of convenient parking for customers. “As a business owner, I’m coming up to 10 years, and I’ve never been able to park for the time I need to be in my business.” Mr Coldwell said: “It is clear small

businesses in our area have faced a very challenging few years. But in the short term, I take great heart from the conversations I have had with independent business owners. “ They are enterprising, resilient, creative and caring. Above all they are proud to be the beating heart of the local community. We are lucky to have them.”

may be excited about all that ‘ You the new year has in store ... sadly

though, many of us may be starting 2024 with an anxious heart.

appy new year! I wonder how many times you have said that so far – if you are reading this sometime into January, perhaps many times already. January is a time of reflection. Looking back over the past year. Looking forward to the year ahead. Maybe making resolutions - and trying to stick to them, at least until the end of the first week of January! That would be me as I mentioned last year. What were the highs and lows of 2023 for you? What are your hopes and fears for 2024? Whilst we all wish each other a “happy new year”, one thing we have all learnt over the last few years is that none of us know what the new year will hold, whether it will be happy or not. We may have plans - and a lot of them will probably happen - but there are likely to be surprises and twists and turns along the way. Some of them will be welcome, some of them less so. You may be excited about all that the new year has in store - holidays already booked, treats planned, new adventures to be had. Enjoy those! Sadly though, many of us may be starting 2024 with an anxious heart - ill health, money worries, difficult relationships weighing heavy. It can feel as if things are getting ever worse with no sign of hope.

The darkness of the days may reflect the darkness of our emotions. If this is so for you, please remember that myself and the church are here for you. For now, as we begin our journey through 2024, I would like to share with you part of a poem, written by Minnie Louise Haskins: And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.” And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.” So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East. The Christian God is not distant or absent; rather he comes to us, meeting us where we are. Whether you are excited, anxious or a mixture of many other emotions as we stand at the gate of 2024, my hope and prayer for each of us is that we will walk forward into the future knowing that God walks with us, offering us light and peace and hope.

Noise fears over flats plan behind pub

CONCERNS have been raised about plans to build two blocks of flats in Keynsham town centre. Bath and North East Somerset Council wants to construct 10 apartments for social housing opposite the Tesco car park. The site in Danes Lane backs onto the High Street’s Old Bank pub, which hosts live music events. One person who commented on the council’s planning application said: “These properties will be affected by constant noise pollution. The Old Bank pub has a rear beer garden which is open late on weekends. The beer garden is often full of drinkers with loud music playing late into the night.” But others were concerned about the effect on the Old Bank itself. One said: “What will happen from my past experiences is the residents will move in knowing full well there are music venues - or the opposite, just won’t have researched anything. Then will

How the new flats opposite the Tesco car park would look complain about the music and general noise from the Old Bank and Club22, who have been there for years and years, then will ultimately have to stop their events.” Another feared that the pub would face noise abatement action after being “inundated” by complaints from the new residents. “The Old Bank pub is an important business and

community hub and it would not be fair to make their business suffer for newcomers.” Another objector added: “If allowed to happen, the apartments must be suitably sound-proofed to allow the pub to continue the live events that make it such a central part of Keynsham life.” Some people felt the site would better used a car park or as a green space.

But one commenter who backed the plans said: “As a local resident I fully support this housing project as a matter of urgency for housing people. “Finally we can see the end of the current eyesore with an area that is constantly being used as a dumping ground for bottles and cans etc, not to mention that awful grey hoarding. This project has to be a positive step forward.” The council-owned site is next to the Old Dairy apartments. One of the three-storey blocks would contain six one-bed flats and the other would have four two-bed properties. Parking would be located in an undercroft beneath block two, which would be set back from the road to avoid interfering with the current right of way that gives access onto the High Street. The deadline for comments on the plans passed on December 21. B&NES Council is due to decide on its own planning application in February.

Dan Norris, centre, John Godfrey, left, and Duncan Hounsell are positive about the future of Saltford station

Fight to reopen station is back on track THE prospect of reopening Saltford railway station is back on track, say local councillors after a meeting with Metro Mayor Dan Norris. Duncan Hounsell, Saltford ward councillor, and Jon Godfrey, chair of Saltford Parish Council, said their discussion with Mr Norris had been productive. The West of England Combined Authority (WECA), led by Mr Norris, has sole

responsibility for strategic transport issues in the local area. WECA is expected to commission a new stations feasibility study, which will include considering the case for Saltford, in March. Mr Norris re-affirmed his positive view about a station at Saltford and said he would approve the funding for this study. Cllr Hounsell said: “The creation of WECA and then large-scale changes to railway

timetables have meant that previous studies had become out of date. “The new WECA study will consider the feasibility and business case for Saltford. The station project is now back on track and I thank the mayor for his support.” Cllr Godfrey said: “The meeting was very positive. The mayor spoke about all needing to work together to make a Saltford station happen and I endorse that approach.”

n KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

New bulbs will emerge in the Pocket Park in the spring

We’re looking forward to a colourful 2024 AS the weather has been grim, here are more cheerful photos from the past year to remind us of warmer times which will return in 2024. Our Keynsham In Bloom stall at the Winter Festival was very successful, and the funds will be used to help us with our summer displays and hopefully achieve a gold in the South West In Bloom competition. We are still awaiting more compost from Bath & North East Somerset Council for our triangular flowerbed in the High Street and when this arrives it’s all systems go in the spring with plants and seeds to encourage insects and create a bee super highway. Very little work is going on at present in the Pocket Park apart from tidying up the leaves, but we are

River bridge taking shape THE project to build a bridge over the River Avon between Saltford and Bitton is continuing to make progress. It will improve access to Saltford Water Recycling Centre, which will undergo a two-year, £34 million expansion to help it meet growing demand. The bridge itself was lifted into place in the autumn, and its junction with the A431 at Bitton is expected to be completed early in the new year. Access will be limited to construction traffic only during upgrades to the water recycling centre. The planting of about 5,000 trees and shrubs, along with ground reinstatement and site clearance, will then continue into the spring. The public right of way

The new bridge across the River Avon after being lifted into place, Below, the Ecological Wetland Scrape and lagoons

along the Avon Trail will also be reopened in the new year. A footpath linking the A431 to the right-of-way network and river trail will mean that people

on either side of the river will be able to cross it by foot. Recent wet weather also showcased the nearby Ecological Wetland Scrape, which is part

of the scheme’s biodiversity net gain. It is designed to provide habitat for amphibians, invertebrates, mammals and wetland birds, with three ponds in place and the scrape mimicking the features of a natural, ancient floodplain meadow. The expansion of the water recycling centre - which treats sewage and wastewater from Bath and the surrounding area before it is safely returned to the environment – is due to start in early 2024. When completed, the complex will be able to treat more than 800 litres of wastewater per second – about a 40 per cent increase on current flows – to help meet increasing demands from local population growth.

POETRY CORNER A Time for Resolutions

Snowy hills all glimmering white Will Santa visit here tonight And for Santa should he come Leave out for him a glass of rum The sound of sleigh-bells ever near Everyone filled with festive cheer The joys of Christmas thoughts abound With magic sprinkled all around Christmas time of hope and caring Laughing, hugging, giving, sharing As we rejoice, our thoughts unfold Family lost, fond memories told A saddened heart, a heavy sigh As snow falls gently from the sky For those now gone evoke a tear As we remember another year

A time for resolutions as from Christmas we do part. Promises we aim to keep, and mean them from the start. A brand new year, a fresh clean slate Keeping diaries up to date. We cannot keep the past alive, The winter now we must survive. We’ll trudge through snow, wake up to fog, Some days may be an uphill slog. And looking to the future now We’re wishing Nations would not row. Praying that the world will mend, That peace will reign and wars will end. But winter time is full of hope, Warm weeks ahead will help us cope. And all around with cheerful ways, Our friends will brighten coming days. Sylvia Kirby

AST month at 1st Saltford Scouts, we saw three amazing awards presented to our members. The first went to David Moore, who has been with us for 40 years. He received the Silver Acorn, which was awarded for over 20 years of distinguished service to 1st Saltford Scouting, issued by Bear Grylls himself. David has devoted a huge amount of time and commitment to the young people in our group and has been a tremendous support to the leadership team as well. He will also get the opportunity to attend the Kings Scout parade at Windsor Castle in April. The second award was the Award for Merit for outstanding service for no less than 12 years. Julie Brewer has given keen, conscientious, imaginative and dedicated service to 1st Saltford for 16 years now and we wouldn’t be without her. Both of these leaders are among many invaluable assets to our group and these awards are very well deserved. The third award was presented to James Bush, who has just turned

14. This was the Chief Scouts Gold Award, the highest award presented within the Scout section. To earn this, James will have completed a number of personal and scouting challenges. James has disabilities which make life very challenging for him, and the Scouts have always accepted and supported him within the troop. The leader team made some reasonable adjustments to the qualifying criteria to make this achievable for James but it was still a challenge. He loves Scouting, has worked really hard at overcoming any barriers this presented, and is very deserving of this award, which will be worn on his uniform from now on. We welcome young people and adult volunteers to our group and are proud to support incredible people like these within it. Young people from the age of six to 18 can participate, and adults of any age can join us to have some fun too. Even if you only volunteer once a week or once a month, it is appreciated and needed. BOOKS OF THE MONTH

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

An Astronomer in Love Antoine Laurain This book has a wonderful cover which first attracted me to the story, and it has proved a lovely read. In 1760, Guillaume Le Gentil, a real-life astronomer, has been instructed by King Louis V to sail into the Indian Ocean to document the transit of Venus – one of the rarest astronomical phenomena. In parallel, 250 years later, Xavier Lemercier, a Parisian estate agent, chances upon an old telescope in a property he has sold. He brings it home hoping it will help him bond with his son, and as he looks out across the rooftops of Paris, he discovers a fascinating woman with a zebra in her apartment! Then she walks into his office, and everything changes. Part adventure, part modern love story, this is an enchanting book – witty and heart-warming.

The Fastest Way to Fall Denise Williams reviewed by Emilie Bioud, Keynsham Library assistant Britta Colby works for a magazine, dreaming of being promoted. She convinces her boss to let her try a new sport-plus-personal coach app online. She plans to ask advice from her coach, see how it is improving her lifestyle, and report on her

progress, peppering her articles with body-positive messages and jokes. Her coach, Wes Lawson, enjoys his new customer she sounds fun and motivated. The use of the app stipulates that they must not meet in person - but what if an accident were to bring them face to face? A light read that keeps you in a good mood.

Adult Non-Fiction

Good Food for Your Table Ian James, Nicholas Selby and Louisa Chapman-Andrews Start the new year with this entertaining book from high street grocers Melrose and Morgan. They have put together a handy guide for a well-stocked larder, expert information on good food, and how to manage your kitchen cupboard so nothing goes to waste. There are sections on bread and how to make it; how to make butter; seasonal fruits and grains; pasta sauces; and even a page on how to make a cup of tea! The section on making jams and marmalade is my favourite.

Warm atmosphere at winter crafts event

Crafters (left to right) Margaret Barnes and Tricia Beazley, from Saltford, and Mary Burnard, from Keynsham ANOTHER creative day was spent by those attending the latest winter craft workshop in Compton Dando. It was also enjoyed by people from Keynsham, Saltford and Longwell Green. Harriette Dottridge, who set up the club several years ago and who runs the sessions, said: “We had 20 people doing various activities, many Christmas-related. A beautiful quilt being

finished, felted cat, wood block printing, wool combing fleece to be spun, painting, glass decorating, knitting and embroidery were all among the activities. “Sadly, a couple of people weren’t well enough to come, but those that did enjoyed the butternut and sweet potato soup and homemade mince pies from Jenny, leek and potato soup I made, demolished several loaves of

home-made bread and particularly enjoyed the Chinese Chew cake which I’d made from a recipe from my husband’s grandmother.” The next crafting days are Tuesday January 9 and Saturday February 3, from 10am to 4pm, at Compton Dando village hall. The group then breaks again for the spring and summer. For more information, please contact Harriette at hdottridge@hotmail.com

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

with Transition Keynsham

‘Historic’ deal prompts uncertainty and hope ON Wednesday December 11, more than 190 nations signed an agreement at COP28 in Dubai that for the first time calls on all nations to transition away from fossil fuels to avert the worst effects of climate change. But is this really a “historic” deal that spells the eventual end of gas, oil and coal, or is it the moment when we let our last chance to tackle climate change slip through our fingers? The answer isn’t cut and dried. Although the deal instructs the signatories to de facto phase out fossil fuels, it doesn’t require them to. And, according to the island states most vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis, the deal is littered with loopholes. The Samoan delegate, speaking on behalf of those states, said that while they wouldn’t block the deal, the world was still way off track from the 1.5 limit, and this agreement didn’t go far enough to correct the course. There are two key issues here. One is that, despite wealthy countries pledging $700m to a loss and damage fund, it’s a long way short of what poorer

countries need. Loss and damage due to the effect of climate change in developing countries is estimated at anything between $100bn and $580bn. And the other is that developed countries won’t have to move away from fossil fuels as fast as the climate science urges. The deal means that the world’s biggest fossil fuel producers – China, India and the US – can continue to do so with nigh on impunity. The good news is the message the deal sends to investors, banks, financial institutions and private companies. The world’s oil-producing countries know that investment in fossil fuels will inevitably slow because of this. That’s why they fought so hard against it, and why it’s so remarkable that the UAE, a major fossil fuel producer, steered the deal over the line. Incredibly, it’s taken 30 years to reach an agreement that sets a clear direction for the future of fossil fuels. We can only hope it’s enough. Liz Barling

Penny’s thriller in print A RETIRED psychological therapist used the isolation imposed by the Covid lockdown to write her first novel. Penny Godden – who had previously written stories to use in her therapeutic work with children – started the thriller during the first lockdown. She then moved home during the second lockdown, and after a short time living in Bath while managing renovations in her new property, she relocated to a large village in Somerset, where she completed her book. After training and an MSc in counselling, the author spent over two decades working as a psychological therapist to children and adults in various locations, including Keynsham, Bristol and the Chew Valley. Entitled Watch you Die, her novel is about a counsellor with a thriving practice who enjoys a peaceful and uneventful life. Then her best friend mysteriously disappears and the man in her life becomes secretive and strange. Her search for the truth

triggers a series of sinister events, and a disastrous decision results in her living the terrifying reality of a childhood nightmare. The psychological thriller is set in Bath, the Chew Valley and a quarry in Somerset . Watch You Die by P.A. Godden is published by New Generation Publishing and is available to order through bookshops and Amazon. n Photo by Ros Anstey

Please help us to plant 16,000 trees THE team behind the Great Avon Wood is calling for a record number of volunteers to help plant 16,000 trees this winter. Last year, local helpers planted 6,500 trees in just seven weeks at the new 100-acre woodland near Pensford. The Forest of Avon Trust and Avon Needs Trees have jointly bought the land for the woodland creation, while volunteers are helping to plant and care for over 40,000 trees that will be supplied by the Woodland Trust. Alex Stone, chief executive of the Forest of Avon community forest, said: “A lot of what we are doing is about restoring trees back where they were many years ago, and this site is full of history and heritage.

“Planting and caring for trees helps clean and cool our air, reduces flooding and provides a home for declining species like birds, bugs and fungi.” Those interested can watch a short film

BRISTOL EMPIRE DRAGONS

Henley triumph is just the start!

IN an exhilarating showcase of skill and determination, the Bristol Empire Dragons soared to an impressive second-place finish at the Henley Winter Series. The event, renowned for its challenging course and top-tier competition, saw the Saltfordbased Empire Dragons navigate the waters with finesse and tenacity. Team co-captain Becky Daley cited the dedication and unity that fuelled their success. “Securing second place in such a prestigious event speaks volumes about the hard work and synergy within our team. We’ve honed our skills and bonded as a unit, and this result is a testament to our commitment.” The Henley triumph has ignited aspirations for the forthcoming season. With a blend of experienced paddlers and

promising newcomers, the Dragons are poised to make a formidable impact in upcoming competitions. “We’re thrilled with our performance, but this is just the beginning,” said coach Lee. “Our team has immense potential, and we’re gearing up

to capitalise on this momentum. Our goal is to dominate the season ahead and make our mark in the world of dragon boat racing.” If you’re interested in a new challenge for 2024, why not step outside your comfort zone and join us?

Dragon boating isn’t not just a sport; it’s a full body workout that builds strength, endurance, and team spirit. Plus, being out on the River Avon adds a refreshing twist to the fitness routine. Call Tina on 07720 353701 for more information.

publicity officer. Two important positions remain unfilled, as Jan Isles stood down after five years as catering manager and Tony Bevan after eight years as bar manager. There were also changes on the playing side, with Carm Riccio standing down after five years as club captain, to be succeeded by Steve Coles. Lynne Pearce was re-elected as ladies’ captain, and there is a new men’s A team captain in Geoff Yorath, who succeeded Carm Riccio. Barrie Davis continues as captain of the B team, as does Andy Abraham (C team), Mike Barrow (Friday triples), Bob Edge (Somerset mixed) and Alan Portch (Sunday friendlies). John Klopcic retired as the Wednesday friendlies captain, to be succeeded by Martin Slade. Chairman Ian Tweedie presented Barrie Davis with a certificate of life membership of the club in appreciation of his contribution to the game of green

bowls in the Somerset area. He said Barrie had been Keynsham club chairman from 2011 to 2021, president of the Somerset Bowling Association in 2015, and was currently chairman of the Bristol and District Men’s Thursday League, as well as chairman of the Somerset Patrons Association. Barrie expressed his thanks for the award and said he hoped to be bowling for many years to come. Just over 50 members met for a quiz evening, with questions on history, music, sport and food of the world. The winning team of Sally DiFazio, Nigel Wright, Pat and Don Weston competed under the name of Paphos because of their love of that Cypriot town, which was the base for a club bowling holiday earlier in the year. Our December coffee morning attracted over 75 members, with the Christmas raffle raising over £300 for club funds. Mike Barrow

MOTORBIKE RACING

Ethan is making tracks for success

MOTORBIKE racer Ethan Bayliss is getting a taste for life on the track at the tender age of seven. The youngster has completed his first season in the FAB-Racing British championship, where he entered the rookie class for children aged five to 12. Ethan, who lived in Keynsham before moving to North Common, comes from a family of bikers – his nanny and grandad, who ride Harleys, dad Paul and mum Laura. Paul said: “Some toddlers have rides on cars, Ethan had a toy motorbike. Several years ago, I rode a mini moto as a hobby and was keen to give Ethan a go. Although Ethan was not a fan at first, especially after his first crash, he didn’t give up and now we can’t stop him talking about it.” Paul has since stepped back
