How Temple Street could be transformed THE “renaissance” of Keynsham’s Temple Street is coming and residents are being urged to have their say. Concept drawings show some of the on-street parking that “dominates” the street removed to make way for pavement licences, planters and “parklets”.

The £1.1 million, four-year heritage action zone project aims to reunite the two sides of the street, make it greener with a community garden and “edible” bus stop and strengthen its identity as an independent part of the town centre. Under the proposals drawn

up by Bath and North East Somerset Council, Keynsham Town Council and Historic England, a new crossing will be installed and pavements will be widened to prioritise pedestrians, traffic speeds will be reduced and there will be new Turn to Page 3

Outside bar can stay to help pub survive A KEYNSHAM pub has been allowed to keep the outside bar it built without planning permission at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Bosses at the Old Bank said in the first lockdown they lost £49,000 and by the end of March the turnover was down a further £204,000 compared to the previous year. They said removing the shed after 12 months was not economically viable and hoped it could remain in place for five years to help them recoup their losses. Granting retrospective permission, Bath and North East Somerset Council said it could stay up until September 2022 as it would no longer be needed when restrictions are fully lifted. The Old Bank said in its application: “The outside bar will generate the trade that ensures survival and the ongoing commercial viability of the pub, which protects the integrity of the listed building. “If we have a good summer, it will help us start to repay some of the debt burden the pandemic has put on us. It will secure the ongoing employment of 20 members of staff.”

Nearly 50 residents supported the pub, with only one person objecting. Keynsham Town Council said the Old Bank bosses had historically failed to apply for planning permission before it pressed ahead with development – they were recently ordered to redecorate after being told the colour choice was “at odds” with the setting. Town councillors did not oppose the outdoor bar but said its uPVC windows were totally inappropriate in the conservation area. B&NES Council planning officers judged that the harm caused by the temporary structure to listed properties nearby was less than substantial. They said the outside bar should be stained or painted a dark colour.

Christmas market set to sparkle A CHRISTMAS market will take place in Keynsham on Friday November 26. The event on Market Walk and in The Space will run from 6pm-9pm, starting with the switching-on of the Christmas lights. The town council has decided to scale back this year’s Winter Festival celebrations because of ongoing work in the High Street. It will be encouraging local shops to stay open for late-night shopping.

Vision for Temple Street 'renaissance'

From Page 1 artwork and lighting. Future opportunities for the wider area include a community garden, a flexible event space and a theatre courtyard. B&NES Council deputy leader Richard Samuel, the cabinet member for resources and economic development, said: “The concept designs have been inspired by Keynsham’s past and aim to strengthen Temple Street’s identity as an independent part of Keynsham’s High Street while promoting sustainable economic and cultural growth and improving quality of life in the town centre. “We want to celebrate Temple Street’s historic character while making it a more appealing and vibrant place to visit by improving the streetscape, particularly around the historic terrace of shops and the grade II-listed Trout Tavern. “We also want to reduce the dominance of Riverside, revitalise underused spaces, green the street with planting and trees, improve accessibility and the street’s connection to key areas in the town such as Memorial Park. “We think these initial concept proposals address these issues, but it’s important local people shape their own community, which is why I’m urging people to get involved in the consultation and help inform

the detailed design proposals.” Keynsham Town Council chair Andy Wait added: “Temple Street has a huge potential to become something very special in Keynsham. “The first step in this renaissance is the upgrading of the public spaces on the street. Please take the time to look at the proposed upgrade and comment. “This is your chance to give an opinion on the changes suggested. Your views count. It isn’t too late for these ideas to change.” The consultation runs until November 22. Visit hikeynsham. co.uk for more information, and click on ‘Have Your Say’ to access an online feedback form. Drop-in sessions will be held at the Temple Street Canteen on November 4, 11 and 18, 1pm4pm. The improvements to Temple Street are part of a wider B&NES Council’s renewal programme that will see £3.6 million invested into the rejuvenation of Keynsham’s High Street. A linked project is already under way focusing on the core High Street, including footpath decluttering, widening and resurfacing, better signage, cycling and bus stop facilities and new seating, streetlights, landscaping and trees. Dan turns junk into robots for exhibition Dan Gardiner makes his robots in many shapes and sizes RECYCLED robots will go on display at an exhibition in Keynsham this month. The creations are the work of Dan Gardiner, whose wife Anika Gardiner is team vicar of St Francis Church and Keynsham Parish. The event, at the church hall in Warwick Road, takes places on Saturday November 20, 10am-5pm, and Sunday November 21, 11am4pm. Dan explained: “I started to make the robot sculptures because I kept seeing perfectly good things being thrown away. “Being a big fan of sci-fi and all thing geeky, the robots started to come together.”

Typically Dan uses metal items such as old kettles, bowls, tins, cutlery, bottle caps and electrical wire. He finds them in skips, scrapyards and charity shops, and people also give him materials to work with. The sculptures are all static and vary in size, from a couple of inches tall to one of four and a half feet. A wide variety will be on show at the exhibition. Robots will be on sale and there will be a raffle to win one. Entry is free. Dan said: “I hope that the exhibition can encourage people to see junk in a different way and encourage them to try something creative with it.”

Flats approved - but shop dropped RESIDENTS of Keynsham’s old chocolate factory will be denied a long-awaited shop after 44 more retirement flats were approved instead. Block D in the Chocolate Quarter at Somerdale was set to provide 24 flats in a four-storey building with a shop on the ground floor. But Bath and North East Somerset Council has approved a five-storey block that will be fully residential despite residents slamming it as “completely disproportionate” and a “carbuncle”. Representing applicant St Monica’s Trust, development director Rob Whetton told planning committee members: “St Monica’s Trust is trying to provide retirement housing which is attractive to older people. “We want to provide the 18 affordable flats, which is 40 per cent of the 44 we hope to build. We want these to be available to local people. We provide housing that is larger and better fitted-out than would usually be the case.” The plans were met with 29 objections, with many criticising St Monica’s Trust. Ellie Lindsay wrote in her objection: “As a community we feel we have been misled and essentially lied to about the plans for D block. “We were told there was going to be a

Plans for Block D at Somerdale local shop that would benefit the community, now nothing of the sort. The only people who want this are St Monica – no one in the Somerdale community is happy about this.” Tony Carter said: “The addition of this new building, not on plans when people bought properties on the estate, without any plans for additional amenities such as a shop, is unfair on existing residents, especially while we pay an exorbitant maintenance fee for the estate. “This carbuncle would reduce the value of nearby houses and harm the estate.” Residents’ concerns about insufficient parking and a loss of privacy and light were echoed by Keynsham Town Council.

Councillor Eleanor Jackson told her B&NES Council planning committee meeting colleagues: “If I got to the stage where I needed this sort of facility, I wouldn’t want to live somewhere that looks like a factory that’s got no outside growing space. There must be more parking.” The plans propose 41 parking spaces but Cllr Shaun Hughes said the demographic that would live in the development needed one per flat. Cllr Paul Crossley disagreed, saying: “There’s a pretty good bus service. We talk about responding to climate change yet all we seem to do is query the fact we’re trying to limit parking.” Cllr Crossley did not have a problem with the loss of the shop, but Cllr Hal McFie said the 1,400 people living on the site were expecting it to be built. Development manager Chris Gomm said under council policy there should be a shop, but that requirement had been met across the whole site. He said the council would struggle to defend it on appeal as a reason for refusal. Members voted by six votes to three against to allow officers to approve the application. CHILDREN from Castle Park Primary School in Keynsham took a trip back in time to experience what it was like to be a Second World War evacuee. A total of 90 pupils from Years 5 and 6 boarded coaches at their school to be ‘evacuated’ to the safety of Cranmore in Somerset. They arrived at the East Somerset Railway to be greeted by a group of volunteers that included Lisa Pool, who co-ordinated the operation. The young evacuees were given identity cards representing

Evacuees' wartime adventure the jobs they would have taken on to earn their ‘balance’, which enabled them to stay at their given home. They then visited Cranmore station’s ticket booth/museum before taking a steam train ride through the countryside to

Mendip Vale, just like the first evacuees of 1939 had done all over England. Following the train ride, and clutching their ration cards, the visitors were taken back to the station, where the guard let them have a go at signalling to the front of the train, and they were shown the workings of the signal box. An account from the visitors said: “When the jam-packed day was over, we travelled back on the coach and reflected on our wartime experience. It was awesome!”

Hannah's marathon effort for Age UK A KEYNSHAM woman has raised more than £2,000 for Age UK by running in the London Marathon. Hannah Thomson took part in the event virtually in 2020 but this year she was able to hit the streets of the capital itself among thousands of other runners. She completed the course in 5 hours 9 minutes, compared to 4 hours 44 minutes last year. Hannah said: “The route was somewhat busier than the railway path in Bristol last year! But once I accepted that I wasn’t going to get a personal best, I just focused on the amazing experience, landmarks and people running alongside me.” Hannah’s inspiration for supporting the charity was her Granny Jean, whose adventurous retirement included volunteering

in Bulgaria, going solo backpacking in New Zealand and becoming a painter. She went on to develop dementia and was cared for by her husband Ian at their home until she died. In tribute to her granny,

Hannah set up a business called The Joy Club to inspire and enable others to have an adventurous retirement, as well as tackling loneliness. Hannah said: “Age UK’s work is so important and needed. I see this first-hand as a volunteer for them. Thousands of older people are isolated and need help and support, and donations to Age UK fund this work. I’m proud to run for them.” As one of Age UK's Golden Bond runners, Hannah needed to raise at least £2,000 - and she has smashed her target. She has so far raised £2,328 (£2,692 including Gift Aid) and the sponsorships are still coming in. Hannah’s fundraising page is at https:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ HannahThomson11/1

ON THE BEAT

Winter is coming, so please be prepared

W

INTER is on its way and as the weather changes, please take the extra time to check your vehicle’s suitability for driving before you hit the road. From tyre tread depths and pressures to fuel, oil and water levels - all these things should be checked regularly to reduce the chance of breaking down or being stranded. n As darker nights draw in, reports of antisocial behaviour have been increasing, mostly concerning groups of youths being disruptive in and around Keynsham. If you have children out and about, do you know who they are with and what they are up to? If not, perhaps you should talk to them as a parent, carer or guardian. You are entitled to know - as a point of safety if nothing else. n We have also seen a rise in reported issues from local schools about inappropriate messages being sent on social media. We work closely with schools to try to prevent such issues through

education. Mobile phones can be more powerful than computers, and most social media platforms have no levels of security on what can be sent or received or by whom. It is again the responsibility of parents, carers and guardians to check what social media platforms are being used. Most have age limits to protect children from unsuitable information. n With Halloween and Bonfire Night on the horizon, all the emergency services are about to be very busy. Both bring different challenges.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps • Free planning & design service

Trick or treating is not appropriate with Covid cases on the rise – this is a shame, but public health must come first. Although you may not have Covid, a house that you visit might! Bonfire Night has its own issues. With the lack of public displays, people have been running their own, which is absolutely fine as long as the location is suitable. You are not allowed to take fireworks to public places to set them off and, much like lighters and matches, they cannot be sold to youths or be in their possession, so please do not buy them for anyone under age. If you are planning a display at your home address, it might be nice to let your neighbours know the date and time in case they have any pets. n One of my favourite events in Keynsham is the Remembrance Parade, which this year is on Sunday November 14. I enjoy the coming-together of the community to respectfully

remember our fallen heroes. I am not able to attend this year, due to being deployed to the COP26 summit in Scotland, but officers from the neighbourhood policing team will be there to support the event. n Our not-so-local beggars have been back around the High Street. While considering measures to prevent this, we are looking at safeguarding the people who need it and dealing with offences committed by those who don’t. You would be amazed at the money that can be earned from begging by people who are not in the unfortunate position they pretend to be. Some treat this as a way of life, earning a substantial sum while claiming benefits. Travelling by bus to different areas each day allows them to take advantage of people’s good nature. I would ask that you don’t give money to these people but report it to the police, and we will safeguard the people who need it.

Rainbow are growing bigger and brighter Ryan Ireland (centre), managing director of Rainbow, with Mark Tanner (left), Protel account manager, and Shaun Triggle, Rainbow operations manager

RAINBOW, based in Keynsham, provide cabling, telephone and IT solutions throughout the Bristol and Bath area. Rainbow started as RI Networks in September 2015. It was then rebranded as Rainbow and incorporated as a limited company in October 2016. The business was founded by Ryan Ireland, who had previously worked as a part-time contractor and ran a local music record label. After racking up mass debt, the record label had to fold, and Ryan went back to full-time contracting. Ryan then took on his first apprentice, Jordan Peters, who is now a senior engineer for the company. Several big opportunities were offered to Ryan if he could find the funds and resources. He decided to take the gamble and hire six contractors at once to assist with these big, one-time projects. Once the projects were finished, Ryan decided to keep the guys on and continue building on the momentum. No cash was immediately available, so Ryan had to take out several loans to pay the engineers on time. The ethos is that the staff must be paid first, and it’s an ethos that has been carried through to today.

The company kept growing with field staff, and Rainbow were quickly moving from office to office and gradually expanding each time within four years. Now in 2021, Rainbow are delighted to finally announce the acquisition of Protel Communications. The company was originally purchased by Rainbow in June 2020, when negotiations began at the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. However, Rainbow were unable to merge the company in, due to the extensive monitoring of the company workload coming out of the pandemic. The move was considered risky as, at the time, neither company had any work on the books. That all dried up when the first lockdown hit, but Rainbow saw it in the best interest of both companies to push through with this sale. Now, one year on, Rainbow are finally able to announce this exciting purchase and merge Protel into their ever-expanding organisation. It’s a true testament to Rainbow’s desire to be the number one customer-focused brand in telecoms. l To contact Rainbow, call 0117 440 4656, email info@rainbownetworks.co.uk or visit www.rainbownetworks.co.uk

Leo helps heart defect awareness campaign A KEYNSHAM boy who underwent open-heart surgery when he was just seven days old is featuring in a campaign to raise awareness of congenital heart defects. Leo Nicholls, who lives with mum Aimee Roberts and dad Alex Nicholls in Park Road, celebrates his fourth birthday this month. Now he will appear on posters and his story will be played in British Heart Foundation shops around the country, including the one in Keynsham High Street, from the middle of this month until Christmas. Aimee said: “Our main aim is to raise awareness of congenital heart conditions in babies and children. “Leo nearly died because he wasn’t diagnosed until two days old and was then in heart failure. “The British Heart Foundation helped fund Leo’s surgeon’s research, which saved Leo’s life.” The family have raised about £10,000 for the British Heart

Foundation, Bristol Children’s Hospital and the Cots for Tots charity. They have also featured in British Heart Foundation appeals which have raised over £100,000. Leo is currently doing well and his heart is stable, although he may require further surgeries in future. Aimee said: “He has vocal cord palsy due to his open-heart surgery, which means his left vocal cord is paralyzed. “This, along with his heart conditions, means that he gets very breathless and can’t cough or scream properly, and struggles with his speech. But besides that, he’s a perfectly normal little boy.” Speaking of the latest campaign, she added: “If it also encourages one extra person to go into the British Heart Foundation shop and buy their Christmas cards there this year, then that also raises money as well as spreading awareness.”

Deal for the whole world

BY the time this column hits everyone’s doormats, COP26 will have kicked off in Glasgow. Held amid rising Covid cases, it’s uncertain, as I write, how many of the world’s leaders and climate activists – particularly from the Global South – will be able to attend. The question of who’s sitting around the table really matters. It’s the West’s carbon emissions, which started with Britain’s Industrial Revolution, that have been the primary cause of manmade climate change. The Global South’s carbon footprint is far smaller, and yet it’s the people in those countries who inevitably feel the harsh effects of climate change more profoundly. The UK government has just unveiled its Net Zero strategy. Whilst it’s welcome, many argue that it doesn’t go far enough, fast enough. Even policymakers at the heart of No 10 think that – an accidentally published paper said that meat and frequent flyer taxes would have to be among the measures necessary to reach the target of net zero by 2050.

Joe Biden’s Green New Deal is a far bolder and more radical framework for meeting the climate challenges that the US (and indeed the world) faces. At its core are two principles: that change must be urgent and at an ‘epic scale’ to meet the scope of the challenge; and that our environment and our economy are completely and totally connected. His plan puts green jobs, investment and technology at the heart of the drive to cut emissions. We need that kind of ambition in the UK, and in the rest of the world. We have to urgently get our own house in order, but we must also help countries in the Global South develop their economies, with the societal benefits that brings, without increasing greenhouse gas emissions. We need a Green New Deal for the whole world. The West must share – for free – the knowledge and technologies that can help bring about a green revolution in the Global South. But for that to happen, every effort must be made to bring everyone to the table. Liz Barling

Firm gives school's play area a new look A PLAY area at a Keynsham school has a great new look, thanks to a local company. Concrete Repairs Ltd (CRL) offers its expertise, materials and time to aid local causes under its Community Project scheme. Earlier this year, the company approached Chandag Infant School, asking if it could help with any projects. The school asked CRL if it could clean and repair an area called Small World, which had become unsafe for the children to use. Small World gives early-years children a sensory, tactile and imaginative play experience, allowing them to explore new materials, build language, practise social skills, act out scenarios from real life and gain an understanding of the world. Following discussions with one of the teachers, the Chandag request was for a natural, volcanic, mountainous landscape to feature areas of sand, loose stones, embedded stones, sparkly

Roger Southwell and Sandra May from CRL with children at Chandag Infant School stones, fossil and fern imprints, toy dinosaur footprints, and feature roads and a couple of pipe tunnels. The work was carried out by

a number of CRL staff over three days during the school summer holidays – and the school is delighted with the finished results.

CRL representatives were invited to a special assembly to reveal the repaired play area to the children and presented them with toy cars and diggers.

Food bank steps up support KEYNSHAM Foodbank has reopened its third collection centre as it braces itself for a rise in demand. Colder weather, combined with the removal of the £20 Universal Credit uplift, will have further impact on local people who are already struggling. The food bank highlights the change to Universal Credit as the biggest cut in welfare payments since the Second World War. It comes at a time of significant rises in fuel bills, the end of the last stages of furlough, and the removal of eviction protection for renters. A BANKING glitch has caused financial donations to Keynsham Foodbank to bounce back. Now the food bank is asking everyone who gives money by standing order to urgently check their bank statements. The charity recently had to change the type of bank account it used. It then found that all donations made by standing order had stopped. It is now asking all donors to update the details they have for the food bank. The correct details for the standing order are: Keynsham Foodbank 60-12-11, new account number 26725592 (only the account number has changed). KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

A road trip from Roman times to today

T

he A4 from Bristol to Bath is one of our busiest local roads. It is easy to imagine that this is a main route between two cities that has existed for many hundreds of years and has gradually been upgraded to its current condition. But this is not the case. For centuries the principal road between Bath and Bristol was that on the north side of the River Avon, through Bitton and Hanham. This was the route taken by the Romans when they built the road from Bath to their port at Sea Mills, and it passed the adjacent crossing point of the Avon at Trajectus, now believed to have been near Somerdale. There were other Roman roads in the Keynsham area, some perhaps built for the transport of lead from the Mendip mines, but we know the location of only fragments. After Roman infrastructure collapsed, roads were only paths and tracks. Instead of taking the shortest route, it would often be quicker to follow one that was passable in wet weather and through the winter. For example, flooding would sometimes make it impossible to pass through Saltford, where the old road ran along what is now the Shallows. So the main routes followed high ground wherever possible. The northern route continued to be the main connection between the two cities for wagons and coaches although it was realigned to a lower route through Kelston. On the south side of the Avon, an established route from Bristol to Bath ran via Whitchurch, Queen Charlton and down to cross

river to reach Swineford and then continued through Kingswood. The narrow track through Keynsham was deemed impassable. A big change took place in 1727 with the passing of the Bristol Turnpike Act, which raised income from the road-user, to be added to the parish contribution. One of the roads turnpiked was the Brislington Road, from Bristol to Newbridge through Brislington and Keynsham. This also include what is now Station Road in Keynsham, up to the County Bridge. The increased income allowed steady improvements to the Brislington Road and, with better surfacing and drainage, it gradually became favoured over the Bitton alternative. The next century saw another step-change when John McAdam became surveyor to the Bristol Turnpike Trust in 1816. He put his theories about road construction into practice and designed major improvements to the road through Keynsham and Saltford that gave us the alignment of the A4 that - except for the Keynsham Bypass - we have today.

Local history book the River Chew via Swan Bridge at Chewton Keynsham. It then climbed and ran, presumably via Gypsy Lane, to Corston and on to Bath. Bridge-building was major construction in medieval times and the width of Swan Bridge shows that it must have been of some importance. From the first Highways Act in 1555, the maintenance and improvement of roads generated various legislation, with the

burden of funding moving from the lord of the manor to the parish, and the work supervised by a waywarden appointed by the parish. Improvements did result, but the increase in traffic often outpaced them. Queen Anne travelled from Bath to Bristol in 1701. Her party filled 13 coaches and, finding the road on the north bank of the Avon through Kelston to be “foundrous”, went via Newton St Loe, forded the

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Learning new skills for the future

WHEN I was growing up my grandfather and uncles were miners, my aunt was a factory worker, and my uncle worked on the railways – and that was that. In those days many people spent their whole life working in the same job, for the same employer. It was how it was. Over the years that’s changed. I had a range of roles before becoming metro mayor: a child protection officer, an environment minister and a scaffolder’s assistant. For children growing up today it will be even more varied, so it is important they always have the opportunity to reskill and retrain. A child born today will have seven or eight different careers in their lifetime, and two-thirds of children entering primary school this year will ultimately work in completely new types of jobs that simply don’t exist yet! Skills and training are an exciting part of my metro mayor role. Recently I opened two fantastic new facilities with funding from the West of England Combined Authority that I lead: the Brunel Centre on the SGS WISE Campus in Stoke Gifford and the City of Bristol College Advanced Construction Skills Centre. The Brunel Centre is a particularly stunning £7 million building, with a great name. I know the next generation of world leading engineers, scientists, technicians and creatives are raring to

go there – I could sense everyone’s enthusiasm as I cut the ribbon. Meanwhile in Bristol I met Owen, who is doing a carpentry course, learning what’s needed to build a better future – literally! He is getting equipped with skills to build new homes and retrofit existing ones in our cities, towns and villages. But it’s not just about young people. I met MakeUK, the manufacturers organisation, as they launched their plan for skills. They explained to me how the average age of people working in manufacturing is over 50 – but they also need to reskill as new manufacturing techniques and machinery emerge. Lifelong learning matters. Here in the West of England we’re at the forefront of innovation, and we need to keep it that way. Our brilliant locally-based scientists, researchers and engineers hold so many of keys to meeting important challenges of tomorrow.

We have just passed a significant landmark on skills funding. We have a special scheme here in the West of England to stop money raised by local companies via the “apprenticeship levy” disappearing up the M4 and being banked by the government. Instead we are keeping it local, with bigger firms passing their unspent levy money to smaller local ones. We’ve just passed £1 million – a great collective effort. So thanks a million to all involved!

Kindness festival's success

A gig in St John’s Church and a seed swap were among the activities on offer

KEYNSHAM Kindness Festival has been hailed a huge success. It hosted 15 events over five days, ranging from music and poetry to arts, crafts and the environment. And it was a big hit with those who attended. Organiser Stefan Edwards said: “The live music at the church was excellent and the workshops - ukulele, flower-making, sign-painting - were all really well received.” The gig in St John’s Church attracted the following comments: l “The quality of the music was exceptional.” l “Beautiful venue, brilliant acts, a very friendly vibe, super helpful and friendly staff, easy to book tickets and order drinks. Loved it. Thank you!!!” l “I loved it and would have liked to have done more but couldn't fit it in!” l “It was such a well-organised event and so uplifting.” Stefan, who used to run the Temple Street Canteen, said: “It was great that we were able to offer the majority of events for free, with just a couple having a minimal cost. “For future years, I would love to expand the programme to make it more accessible to a wider range of people. I would love to include more health and wellbeing events. “The festival was kindly funded by Keynsham Action Network this year. We are hoping to secure funding to run the festival in the future.” To keep up with its progress, visit www.keynshamkindnessfestival.co.uk or see Facebook @KeynshamKindnessFestival

n KEYNSHAM IN BLOOM

Gold reward is a glittering result AFTER being put on hold with this dreadful pandemic, it's wonderful to be recognised by South West In Bloom as worthy of a gold medal. When our town was judged earlier in the year, we Keynsham In Bloom volunteers questioned our horticultural decisions. Had we planted the correct flowers? Are we dead-heading, weeding and watering regularly enough to maintain the displays throughout the season, and what will the judges say? Some lockdown rules still applied so care had to be taken, but this didn't stop our hardy volunteers, and their determination has meant success for Keynsham. A big thank-you to all involved, and please contact the email addresses below if you wish to join our cheerful band of workers. The ceremony was held in the Winter Gardens at Weston-super-Mare. After we had been entertained by Jon Wheatly and James Alexander-Sinclair, both very experienced garden designers, the award was received. A great feeling of relief was felt, but we will not rest on our laurels. We will continue to make our town an even better place to live. We are now working on removing the summer displays and planting winter bulbs and flowers to bring cheer to all who visit us through the dark winter months. l Email keynshaminbloom@icloud.com or catherinemarywoodman@gmail.com. Festival boosts Children in Need

K

eynsham Walkers are Welcome raised £490 towards Children in Need by taking part in the BBC Countryfile Ramble. Their efforts were part of the two-day mini walking festival on October 9-10, which involved three walks of varying standards and culiminated in a social/quiz night. Well over 100 people took part in all the events and the walks enjoyed superb walking weather. The first, led by Dave Johnson, took us towards Bitton, along the cyclepath, then

back along the River Avon. The second, on the Sunday morning, was a shorter affair, led by Derek Butler, a circular walk either side of the River Chew to Chewton Place. The last and by far the longest was again led by Dave Johnson, who took us along the River Avon to Hanham, coming back via Hanham Woods. A refreshment stop was held at The Lock & Weir, where we were made very welcome. This was the walk in which 35 of us joined the BBC Children in Need Countryfile Ramble. Awards season for Scouting superstars

T

here have been plenty of awards and celebrations at 1st Keynsham Scouts before the half-term break. Chiltern Cubs said goodbye to their oldest Cubs, who left the pack to move up to Scouts at the end of September. It was a very special occasion as they presented the highest award in Cubs to Thomas the Chief Scout Silver Award, which he worked for over a two-year period. A Cub has to achieve all seven challenge award badges, as well as six activity badges. Under even normal circumstances, this takes commitment and perseverance, but it has taken an exceptional amount of dedication by Thomas during the last 18 months, with not as many face-to-face sessions to enjoy the range of activities normally associated with Cubs. Thomas has completed most of his badge work at home, supported by his parents. Just some of his accomplishments include: cooking a three-course meal for his family, growing a sunflower from seed, making a bird feeder, drawing a map of services on Keynsham High Street, finding out about a different faith, going on hikes, making a camp gadget, and learning basic first aid. Congratulations Thomas! Rocky Beavers also waved goodbye to six of their Beavers, who achieved their Chief Scout Bronze Award and are moving up to Cubs. Congratulations Lexi, Brodie, Charlie, Alby, Toby and Oscar — we’re sure you’ll love Cubs! Congratulations also to Ted, Eben, Bradley and Martha, who have gained their awards and will be moving up soon. This is the highest award a Cub can receive, so

Chiltern Cubs congratulate Thomas on his Chief Scout Silver Award. Below, Rocky Beavers are celebrating several Chief Scout Bronze Awards and are looking forward to moving up to the Cubs

it’s a massive achievement to hand out so many of them! l We also wanted to say a big thank-you to everyone who attended the book launch of Keynsham and its Scouts 1909-1975

and to its author Dr Allen ‘Bunny’ Warren. It was brilliant to see people of all ages exploring our archive of photos, badges, uniforms and more — with the earliest item

dating from 1907 before the official formation of the group. We hope that this is the start of making the archive more accessible to the public and are looking forward to sharing it with many others.

Get on your marks for the Santa Dash THE countdown to the Saltford Santa Dash on Sunday December 5 is now well under way. Organisers are excited to see everyone running together again this year for the first time since 2018. All age groups are welcome, with the one-mile ‘mini’ dash for those aged under 12, starting at 10am, and the five-mile adult dash following at 11am, with entertainment and warm-ups taking place during the morning. Following the success of last year’s virtual dash, there is also the option of going virtual this year, too. If you can’t make it on December 5, or simply fancy running your dash at another date and time, you can choose to run any time between Saturday November 27 and Saturday December 4. All entrants receive a Santa suit and running number with their registration, and a medal on completion of their dash. The team are also on the lookout for marshals on the route. To find out more

The Santa Dash is returning on December 5 - and scarecrows will also be doing their bit about how to get involved and to register your place, visit the website - www. saltfordsantadash.co.uk In addition to the dash, organisers are also planning to hold the Santa Scarecrow Trail again this year. n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Challenge male violence against women and girls AS I mentioned in my last column, I am pleased to announce that I have taken on the role as national lead PCC for the Economic and Cybercrime portfolio. As the new lead, I will spearhead the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners’ (APCC) work to ensure the police are tackling online crime, fraud, harassment, hacking, economic crime and identify theft. One in ten people fall victim to fraud and one in three become a repeat victim. It is because of such figures that I was inspired to take on this role as I feel it is an area of work where I can make the most difference to the lives of local people in Avon and Somerset and beyond. Cybercrime and fraud are two of the most fast-growing crime types in the country, almost doubling every year. In fact, both crimes are growing so quickly that according to the Office for National Statistics, people are more likely to be a victim of fraud

or cybercrime than any other crime. Ultimately, we need to get a grip of it and protect vulnerable people from harm. Over the coming months, I will be working closely with regional and national partners to improve the police response to this everevolving and complex area of crime. I also wanted to discuss a matter that I know has been of great concern to many local people, more so in recent weeks: male violence against women and girls. The threat of abuse, misogyny, intimidation and violence that women face every day has become wrongly accepted in communities as the ‘norm.’ Following the appalling murder of Sarah Everard, I have read with absolute horror on social media and in the news, the precautions and preventative steps that women and girls take every day of their lives to protect themselves and, still, such actions

do not always keep them safe. A change is needed. Now is the time to put the onus back on the offender and actively challenge their behaviour. Collaboration of statutory agencies and partners is essential to tackle the attitudes, behaviour and, ultimately, criminal activity of perpetrators who are violent towards women and girls. Change is also needed within the police and criminal justice system and that is why I am supportive of the Home Office’s inquiry into issues raised by Wayne Couzens’ conviction. Sarah’s murder has rightly already raised some difficult questions and discussions for all police forces and the Home Office’s inquiry will continue to do so. Sustained change is desperately needed and I firmly encourage Avon and Somerset Police to face these questions head-on, reflect and set actions to ensure officers and staff are upholding the highest standards

of policing for our communities. I understand that this is a complex, societal issue but this is not an excuse. We need to start somewhere and the police and criminal justice system need to be leading the way to deliver real change.

Members of the buggy walk pictured last year - some of the original members from 2013 are still meeting up

Join our buggy walk and make friends NEW parents are finding friendship and support thanks to a buggy walk in Keynsham. Sandhya Coyle started the group eight years ago to help people meet each other. And with the restrictions caused by Covid-19, the need has never been greater. Sandhya said: “Lockdown has left many people isolated, and if you had a baby at this time, you were pretty much left to your own devices. Luckily now in Keynsham, many of the playgroups are back up and running and there are so many to choose from. “It can be a bit daunting going to a baby group by yourself and that is why I set up the buggy walk.” The group meets weekly in Keynsham for a walk of around 45 minutes and finishes off at a

Some members also gather on a different day and go to the park or groups together, and others have met through a Facebook group that Sandhya has set up. “In that group, I also have a list of the groups I know in Keynsham so people don’t have to go finding them themselves.” Sandhya, who has two

children, aged nine and four, said: “I started the buggy walk with my daughter when she was three months old. “I’m a yoga instructor and wanted to get active again after having a baby, and as there was nothing available like this in Keynsham, I decided to start one up myself. And eight years later, some of

the original members still meet up. “Many of us are still friends now. From the first buggy walk, I met one of my best friends, Hannah, and our daughters who happen to be born three days apart - are best friends too.” When asked if there are any dads in the group, Sandhya said: “Not yet! But we did have a partner join his wife for one session as she was feeling worried about the baby crying. Choose local produce, avoid supply chain issues and help our planet

S

hortages of HGV drivers; stories of animals being culled and food going to waste; threats of pigs-in-blankets disappearing from the shelves at Christmas. These kinds of headlines are increasingly familiar and expose our reliance on complicated supply chains to deliver the food we eat every day. However, such short-term issues pale in comparison to the negative impacts long supply chains have on the climate. As world leaders gather in Glasgow for the COP26 climate change conference, we want to shout about one solution that is right in front of our eyes (or just down the road). Local food. Short supply chains avoid many of the issues behind those headlines. Choosing to eat locally also minimises transportation, packaging and waste: substantial contributors to climate change. The UK simultaneously imports and exports millions of tonnes of milk each year. Some food travels hundreds of thousands of miles to get packaged, only to end up on the shelves in the area it was produced. These are two examples

which highlight just how nonsensical the global food system has become. Here in the South West, we are blessed with so many amazing producers, and delicious, local food. Check out your local farmers’ market; pop into a greengrocers; buy from a local veg box scheme! From April, some of our volunteers were able to come back, but they’d come at 7am so they wouldn't bump into any residents. They really were stars. “Sue Hopkins, a long-term friend and volunteer of Abbeyfield House, would take the hanging baskets away and make them from her own home to cut down on the time she spent near the house. “Our neighbour Jim was amazing and planted up lots of bedding for the residents to

n BACK TO NATURE

Splendour of the spindleberry with Avon Wildlife Trust Keynsham Group

THE autumnal colours of leaves may well be a distant memory in November, but there could still be a little joyous burst of colour left on spindleberry trees (euonymous europaeus). Nature often signals danger by helpfully giving poisonous plants or insects garish colours, and the fruit of the spindleberry tree is no exception. The tiny bright pink fruits burst open to reveal bright orange seeds which look like popcorn that has been drenched in some noxious chemical dyes. There is a special joy in finding a fruiting wild spindleberry tree because it is such an unassuming plant for the rest of the year and it is possible to walk past it for months without noticing until the fruits demand attention. A mature tree can be up to nine metres tall and can live 100 years, although it will happily grow a bushy habit if treated as a hedging plant. It is commonly thought to like chalky soil and to be an indicator of ancient woodlands, but there are a couple of fine specimens in Manor Road Community Woodland, which is a relatively new wood on solid clay and stony soil. The bark has corky markings and the waxy ovoid leaves have tiny teeth on the edges. The tiny white hermaphrodite (containing male and female parts) flowers appear in May and June and are insect-pollinated. The seeds are spread by birds that eat the fruit, so plants can pop up in nearby hedges. Spindleberry is particularly useful to a wide range of wildlife; the caterpillars of magpie moths, spindle ermine moths, scorched carpet moths and the holly blue butterfly eat the leaves and the flowers attract aphids, hoverflies, ladybirds, lacewings and St Mark’s flies, which in turn are feasted upon by an array of birds. The straight creamy white dense hardwood was unsurprisingly used as spindles for hand-spinning wool as well as knitting needles, butcher’s skewers,

The charity has long been supported by Sir David Attenborough. We are also hosting a special talk on Wednesday November 24 - Bringing Beavers Back to Britain. Following the exciting news that beavers have naturally populated a river in the Avon catchment area (the first ‘county’ where this has happened in the UK), we are thrilled to welcome Chris Jones and Josh Harris from the Beaver Trust and Amy Coulthard from Avon Wildlife Trust to tell us their plans for this nocturnal aquatic mammal. Movember challenge for Lee

Inspecting the catch at Wellsway School pond - Lisa King, Ronnie and Jack with Dave Sage Photo: Liz Wintle

Batty about bats KEYNSHAM group of Avon Wildlife Trust held its first Zoom talk of the season in October, with Daniel Hargreaves, local bat enthusiast, expert and conservation champion. Daniel’s catchphrase is that he is “batty about bats”, and his CV is extraordinary, especially considering all his work is voluntary and unpaid. He is a member of the Bat Conservation Trust, has worked with the BBC, with captive and wild bats, and is a co-founder of “Trinibats”, based in Trinidad and Tobago. Answering questions after the talk, Daniel explained how he was inspired by Merlin Tuttle, world renowned bat expert and pioneer in bat photography. Some of Daniel’s images were breath-taking. He warned that, in the UK, the main predator of bats is the domestic cat, but they are also predated by owls, sparrowhawks, hobbys and even herring gulls. Although mainly nocturnal, bats are not blind; indeed flying foxes - fruit-eating bats - have excellent eyesight. Bats are easier to train than dogs, using a feed-and-click stimulus. In 2013, Daniel was “hand stunt double” for Sir David Attenborough holding a bat, a highlight of Daniel’s career!

The group’s watery themed weekend of pond and river dipping hosted by chair Dave Sage took place at the end of September - two different activities enjoyed by the younger children at the Wellsway School pond and older children on the River Chew in Keynsham. A more detailed report of this, including the results of the dippings, plus our talk report, can be found on our website www.keynshamawt.org/latest-news For further information on our group, email keynshamawt@gmail.com or phone Kathy on 07850 508702. CHARITY fundraiser Lee Fellows is once again doing his bit for Movember, the global campaign that aims to improve men’s physical and mental health. Supporters spend each November growing a moustache to raise money to help tackle suicide, as well as testicular and prostate cancer, and to encourage men to open up about their mental health. The Keynsham dad - pictured sporting a previous Movember style - has been backing the campaign since 2016. Lee said: “As I already have a moustache, I try to style it in an outlandish way in order to catch people’s eye and open up the conversation. “We lose 60 men an hour around the world to suicide. That’s 1,440 men a day around the world who feels they can’t take another day. “Mental health has affected people very close to me. “If I can reach someone who is struggling, and give them the push to seek out the support they need, it’s all worth it. We need to break down the stigma of men asking for help, to create a better, more accepting future.” Movember also raises awareness of prostate, testicular and other cancers that many men don’t feel comfortable talking about, even to a doctor. Lee said: “This year I'll once again be styling and dying my moustache. I'll also be taking part in the 10k MoRun in Bristol, dressed as everyone’s favourite superhero Spiderman. “Alongside the 10K, I'll also be covering 60k locally over the month to honour the 60 men we lose a month to suicide.” Lee’s donation page can be found at https://movember. com/m/leefellows?mc=1 and can also be accessed using the QR code printed here.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

to all keep our town clean and ‘ Thanks tidy … who make the town community

Stephen M’Caw Team Rector Keynsham Parish

a joy to be part of, and to those whose work is often not noticed or seen.

O

n my journeys around Keynsham I have noticed, and I expect you have too, the signs of at least one graffiti artist. On a red pillar post-box nearby has been written in white vertical text the word ‘Ghoul’ and underneath, to reinforce the message, an icon of a head with two horns and forked tail. On a lamp post or street sign near you, there may be letters, spelling who knows what (!) in white or red; sometimes in script with sharp angles, sometimes rounded and cursive in style. High up on the back of Poundland is a work of colour, whilst opposite (in mid-October) there is a message on the Ashton Way bus-shelter saying ‘Soak Spinny.’ Judging by the streaks running downward from each letter, they may have already been soaked. As a work of art, it is evocative; as a work of vandalism, it defaces the shelter and needs removal.

There are loads of other signs up around the town: ‘for sale’ outside properties, scaffolding firms advertising their services on their huge structures of poles and fabric, and a vast array of shop signs on the front of the High Street businesses – offering all kinds of sizes, colours, fonts, styles and taste. Not graffiti but legitimate communications. Now whilst I have seen estate agents erecting ‘for sale’ signs and scaffolders at work, and topping out their work with their advertising, and sign designers on their step ladders renewing the fascia on the town’s shop fronts, I have never seen a graffiti artist out and about in Keynsham. This may well be because graffiti is considered an act of criminal damage under the Criminal Damage Act 1971, and offenders can be punished with an unlimited fine. Those applying graffiti may find the law applies to

them, even if they aspire to be as famous as Banksy. Here is my first point - thanks to all who keep our town clean and tidy and especially those who pick up litter, clear the bins and clean the streets, water the Keynsham In Bloom baskets and planters and all the many, many others who make the town community a joy to be part of, and to those whose work is often not noticed or seen … those who clean up after the graffitists. My second is that God is not unlike these unseen workers – indeed, to enliven the point, he is rather like a secretive graffiti artist. He is covertly around, signposting in the oddest of places signs of his existence. He may never be seen or heard, but the signs are there. In ways of loving stealth seeking not to deface but to enhance and help, writing on the red pillars of our days, not ‘ghoul’ but ‘God Here – Oy U Listen!’

Poppy tribute to the fallen POPPIES will flow at St Mary’s Church in Compton Dando to mark Remembrance Sunday on November 14. The poppies were made to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War in 2018. During the day, visitors will be able to admire the poppy cascade in the church and read about each villager who sadly did not return from the war. A remembrance service at 10am will be followed by a gathering at the memorial, and then the act of remembrance. Soup and rolls will be served at around 11.15am at the church, then tea and cake from 2pm to 3.30pm. All donations will go to St Mary’s Church.

This photo collage of current villagers in Compton Dando has been put on display in the village hall. Alison Ter Haar – pictured (left) with Alice Prescott – had agreed at Compton Dando Community Association’s AGM to organise the updated collage after it was realised that the most recent photo dated back to 2000.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Goldfinger Ian Fleming “James Bond, with two double bourbons inside him, sat in the final departure lounge of Miami Airport and thought about life and death.” And so begins one of the classic James Bond books. With the new Bond film in cinemas, why not try one of the original stories? James Bond is wondering how Auris Goldfinger is cheating at Canasta. The Bank of England is interested in him, too. And what is his connection with SMERSH, the USSR spy-killing organisation? A classic spy story with loads of thrills, but please note that this is an adult-themed book that was first published in 1959, so some of its attitudes and language may strike readers as old fashioned.

The Thursday Murder Club Richard Osman reviewed by Kerri Brain, Keynsham Library assistant Joyce has moved into Coopers Chase, advertised as ‘the first luxury retirement village’. When she is invited to join a select few residents for a weekly group booked under the title ‘Japanese Opera - A Discussion’ to dissuade casual interest, she quickly becomes a valued member of The Thursday Murder Club.

Members look at coldcase files, the unofficial property of former police inspector Penny Gray, and they try to solve the old crimes. When two local murders are committed, the groups' eccentric but successful sleuthing skills are put to the ultimate test. Written by the television producer and presenter, this is a lovely read, albeit with some element of tragedy. I became enthralled with the lives of the characters and cannot wait for the release of The Thursday Murder Club 2 and potentially a film, after Steven Spielberg bought the film rights to the novel. The Olive Tree Carol Drinkwater on audio CD or use the Borrowbox app for the free e-audiobook Narrated by the author herself, this audio book charts her journey in search of the routes that olive cultivation has taken over the centuries. Troubled by challenges her farm in the South of France is experiencing, Carol realises that new approaches to farming are becoming essential, so she embarks on a quest which takes her south through Spain, Morocco, Algeria and Italy. She confronts critical issues such as land-care and diminishing water reserves - and ends her journey in the company of olive

Sam McBratney & Anita Jeran Timeless classic, priceless as well, the first time we read it, a wave of warmth and love engulfs us. Little Nut Brown Hare knows it’s time to go to bed but tries to delay it by asking questions of Big Nut Brown Hare, all revolving around “how much I love you”. We never tired of coming back to it again and again. The pictures are beautiful and match the story perfectly. Did you know that the expression “to the moon and back” comes from this little gem? To all the new parents: this should be on your must-read list. Enjoy.

Library news

You’re very unlikely to find a bear in the wild in England these days, but the oneirism brought on by this little story is definitely something. The sentences are like a song, and you’ll find yourself using those words even after you’ve closed the book and put it back on the shelf. I like the adventure setting, and the weather-battered landscape captures the reality of England coastal areas. The relationship of the siblings who help each other and the scary encounter make it an exciting read. LOW

Autumn

Covid's on the Run

Winter’s now upon us, Summer’s in the past But stop, it will be welcome as off our fears we cast. With vaccines for the youngsters and boosters for the old There’ll be more reassurance as we watch the world unfold. The future’s feeling brighter and smiles are in the air, We’ve all become much busier, but still we’re taking care. We’re relaxing and enjoying more and grateful for our days, Planning how we now must live as we change our ways. But while accepting this ‘new normal’ we must not forget The Doctors and the Nurses – we’re forever in their debt. Give thanks to all the Scientists enabling us to hope And though life’s very different now we’re finding we can cope. So as this cruel virus responds to our control Let love and kindness take its place entering every soul. For we have learnt important issues floundering in this mist And respect for one another should be top of every list. Sylvia Kirby

The leaves are falling fast Carpeting the earth with gold The hedgerows surrender their fruit And the sun is lower in the sky. Autumn is upon us again The clocks will now go back an hour Winter is on its way once more Frost and mist replaces the sunshine. New birds arrive on the scene Looking for empty nests to inhabit Food and water is all they require In their temporary abodes. Chestnuts and real fires An extra blanket and bed socks And hot chocolate at bedtime We look forward to the festive season. RESIDENTS of Kingfisher Lodge care home in Saltford enjoyed their first day out in months when they took a river trip on the Bath Water Bus. The outing was suggested by Sam Nessling - who runs the water bus and is also a carer at the home – as a treat following lockdown. After successful risk assessments, skipper Sam welcomed residents and volunteers aboard, and refreshments and music were provided. Captain’s duties were shared around the passengers, who got the chance to wear the skipper’s hat, and the trip was blessed with fine weather. One of the residents, Pam, said she loved every second, and enjoyed waving to the other boats and receiving a wave back. Kingfisher Lodge arranges two trips each month and is always looking for volunteers to provide support. Anyone interested can call Julie Tucker on 01225 871030.

n ECO FESTIVAL ROUND-UP

We all have a part to play in saving planet

G

ood weather prompted many people to attend the Eco Festival organised by Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford in conjunction with Keynsham Town Council over the weekend of September 17-19. On the Friday evening, the Space was almost full, and those who attended commented on the relevance of the talks and expertise of the speakers. For some it really was an eye opener, as they had little idea how green their bank was or how their money in the bank was invested. On Saturday, Market Walk and the Space hosted more than 30 stalls. Some took an impressive numbers of orders for their products while others, such as the Woodland Trust and Avon Wildlife Trust, signed up new members. There were projects for children and young people in Keynsham Park, a photographic display in the Baptist church, and prayer tables and displays by the Girls’ Brigade in the Methodist church. On the Sunday morning, an eco service in the Methodist church was led by the minister, Rev Jane Wilson, with support from members of the eco group. Why was this festival held at this time? It seemed an obvious way to draw local people’s attention

The Eco Festival helped to raise awareness of climate change to the threat of climate change and the importance of the COP 26 conference in Glasgow in November. What is COP 26 and what is it trying to achieve? It is a meeting of world leaders with the critical task of trying to save our planet. COP stands for Conference of the Parties and 26 denotes it is the 26th time this conference has taken place – last year’s was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. Its aim is to bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCs) agreed by each country at the meeting in Paris to set its post-2020 carbon emission levels were put in place in

an attempt to reduce the predicted 1.5 degree rise in temperatures by the year 2040. The world’s largest single polluter is China, being responsible for 28% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, followed by the USA on 15%, India on 7% and Russia on 5%. While President Biden is due to attend the conference, at the time of writing the leaders of the other three nations had not confirmed. Professor David Tyfield, of the Lancaster Development Centre, recently stated: “Unless China

decarbonises, we are not going to beat climate change.” If we consider the carbon dioxide emissions in terms of tons per capita, it is 6.3 for those living in upper-middle-income countries and 0.2 in low-income countries. The developed world is mainly responsible for the pollution of our planet at the expense of those without the resources to protect themselves. It is therefore essential that countries such as those named above accept their responsibilities and implement policies to dramatically reduce their carbon emissions. I recently read that we are all dependent on each other and our environment for our survival. The purpose of the Eco Festival was to illustrate this point, as we all have a part to play. The environmentalist Robert Swan OBE stated recently: “The greatest threat to our planet is our belief that someone else will save it.” Mike Barrow

Return of Remembrance

The Remembrance Parade in 2019

KEYNSHAM branch of the Royal British Legion will hold a Remembrance Sunday parade on November 14. The parade will form in Ashton Way at 9am before marching to St John’s Church via Charlton Road. The service at St John’s will be followed by a parade at about 10.35am via Ashton Way (instead of the traditional High Street route) to the gates of the Memorial Park for a minute’s silence at 11am and a short service. After leaving the park gates, the parade will return to Ashton Way via Rock Road. Road closures will be in place during the period. As part of Covid-19 precautions, organisers, volunteers and participants are advised to take a lateral flow test before the event.

WONDERFUL autumnal sun greeted Chew Valley Arts Trail’s return to a real-life event after it was forced to go virtual in 2020. Among the artists who exhibit each year is Keynshambased artist Penny Richards, pictured above, who uses water-based paint to depict subjects ranging from figures in movement to quiet but textural landscapes. She also has wide experience in teaching art to children and adults and offers watercolour workshops to adults.

n KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB

Dave and Sally take the honours as season ends THE last wood has been rolled for the season on the rink in Keynsham Park and the green “put to bed” until April of next year. Over 50 members of Keynsham Bowls Club played on the final rollup Sunday and enjoyed a fish and chip supper in the clubhouse afterwards. Before this, the final league matches of the season were played. In the Thursday Bristol and District League, our men’s A team finished top of league 2 while the B team won league 4, with the C team finishing fourth. Unfortunately, promotion and relegation had already been cancelled, so our teams will remain in the same divisions when next season starts. In the Friday Triples League, our men finished fourth. One of our ladies, Sally de Fazio, got to the semi-final of the Somerset County Unbadged Competition, which was played at Chew Stoke. But despite support on the day from our ladies, she did not reach the final itself.

Dave Bendall and Sally de Fazio, winners of the men’s and ladies’ championships At the end of August, our club finals were held over three days. There were as usual over 12 finals played, but pride of place goes to those

who won the ladies’ and men’s championships. The latter was won by Dave Bendall, 36 years after winning it for the first time in 1985. It was his fifth time of landing the trophy, a record that will be hard to beat. To compensate for her loss at Chew Stoke, Sally de Fazio won the ladies’ championship. The club was successful in obtaining a grant from Keynsham Town Council to re-cover the clubhouse roof, and our secretary David Hockney attended the awards evening to accept the cheque and thank the council for its support. Members will look forward to the social activities taking place in the clubhouse during the winter while hoping that the 2022 season will bring about a season of normal bowling. Until that happens, the green will be tended on regularly throughout the winter to ensure it will be in pristine condition as it takes its place in enhancing Keynsham Park. Mike Barrow

n CAMERTON AND PEASEDOWN CROQUET CLUB Finals day is a thriller EVEN under Covid rules, Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club has enjoyed an exciting year. It welcomed over 10 new members, took part in regional and national competitions, with Colin Britt winning the ‘A’ level series and Andy Loakes coming second in the all-England championship – but the icing on the cake was finals day. The sun shone as players of all skill levels battled it out, and games were won or lost by only one point. The level doubles was won by Jill and Craig Shaw by 7 to 6 against Christina Sandford and Robin Oldland. The handicap singles was won

by Steve Perry 7 to 5 (Steve and Phil Hendy fought for each hoop). The handicap doubles was another well-fought match, with Mo Boys and Tony Brooks winning through against Andy Loakes and Nigel Wulcko by 7 to 5.

The level singles pitted the club’s two best players against each other. They produced top-class play, with Andy Loakes eventually beating Colin Britt by 7 to 6. The high handicap singles pitted Marylin Hendy against Nigel

Wulcko - and Marylin had 11 extra turns. After another momentous battle, Marylin just won by 7 to 6. Association singles was won by Colin Britt, who won by only one point against John Rowley (15 to 14). The short croquet final was won by Mo Boys against David Milford, 14 to 6. At the end, club chair Mo Boys thanked everyone for taking part, Colin Britt for organising the tournament, and those who provided teas and cakes. Croquet is an outdoor sport anyone can play, whether you are competitive, looking for a group activity with gentle exercise, or social contact in a welcoming atmosphere. The club plays all through the year. Call Mo on 01225 708540 to arrange your free introduction.

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB Trophy triumph for winning players FRYS Bowling Club brought the 2021 season to a close with their annual presentation dinner at Saltford Golf Club. The first trophy presented was the delayed 2019 two wood. In a close game, Jonathan Day took the title from Jeff Budd. Next was the triples, played in July. Steve Buck, Vernon Hopkins and Ken Stewart took the runnersup trophies, while Stephen Day, Jeff Budd and Tricia Shaw scooped their first triples title. It was also Jeff and Tricia’s first ever competition victory. In the pairs, a one-sided game saw Jonathan Day and Jeff Budd

take the title from Roger Loader and Ken Stewart. After a number of attempts, Steve Buck won his first title in the novices, defeating new chairman Ian Bartlett in the final.

In the two wood, Jonathan Day took home the title after an extra end with Stephen Day, the runner-up. Jonathan was also triumphant in the handicap, taking

the title from Roger Loader. The championship was another close encounter, with Stephen Day just missing out and Jonathan Day completing a third triple crown, becoming the first player to win four competitions in a single season. With the outdoor season now closed, Frys will now concentrate on activities for their winter season. CYCLO-CROSS

Come and cheer the cyclo-cross riders CYCLO-cross riders will converge on Keynsham for the British Cycling Regional Championships later this month. The event will take place on the ShamXross track at Somerdale Meadows on November 28 – and local spectators are being encouraged to come along and cheer the competitors on. Riders on modified drop-handle road bikes will see how many times they can complete the 2.3km circuit in one hour - over grass, mud, gravel and sand. The track includes steep sections, parts where riders are forced to dismount, and a double spiral cut into the grass track – known as “the spiral of doom” – that results in spectacular scenes as competitors stream in and out at the same time. Men, women and children ride in the event. Racing for the youngest starts at 9am and runs through to mid-afternoon for the faster categories. Course designer and director Kev Brewer said: “Traditionally, spectators bring cow bells to make some noise, but pots and pans work well too!” Gwen Edwards, part of the ShamXross team, added: “Cyclocross is a great sport to photograph. We were really chuffed that local photography legend Alistair Stuart Campbell joined us at the September race, and his images from ShamXross will feature in an article in the December issue of Digital Camera Magazine.” Anyone can enter this month’s event via the British Cycling website in advance. No entries will be permitted on the day of the race. ShamXross also runs coaching sessions. For more information, search for ShamXross on Facebook.

KEYNSHAM TOWN

keynshamvoice

November, 2021

Sure-fire Matt helps Ks stay on form KEYNSHAM Town carried their good early-season form into October, maintaining their place in the top half of the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. First up was a visit from Buckinghamshire outfit Long Crendon in the FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round. After an early shock when the visitors took the lead, the Ks fought back, and goals from Callum Baker (2), Will Hailston and Matt Brown gained a comfortable 4-1 victory. The subsequent draw for the First Round Proper threw up a difficult away tie with a long trip to South West Peninsular League high-flyers Newquay on October 23. A hugely anticipated local derby in the league followed a week later, with a visit to neighbours Bitton, who stood top of the Western Premier. The match produced one of Keynsham Town’s best all-round performances in the five years under the current management duo of John Allen and Russell Holt. After a bright start by the Ks, it was that man again, Matt Brown, who gave them a deserved lead on 20 minutes. Former Ks stopper Matt Dunk was in fine form in the Bitton goal, but he could do nothing more as the Ks forced home their superiority in the second half with further goals from Jordan Anstey and a brace from striker Stef Lee, who has just returned to action after a year out following a major knee operation. A rainy Tuesday evening then saw Keynsham travel to Wincanton Town in the Somerset Premier Cup First Round. Goal maestro Matt Brown was soon at it again, securing an excellent hattrick to take him past the 100-goal

Above, goal maestro Matt Brown finishes with his usual aplomb against Long Crendon. Left, Callum Brown scores one of his brace in the same FA Vase match milestone for the club. Despite two late goals from the hosts, the Ks held on for a 3-2 victory. The next round will see them on the road again with a tough trip to Southern League Premier outfit Weston-super-Mare scheduled for December 7. Following the Somerset Cup victory, the club pulled off a major coup with the signing of Dan Cottle from the Southern League’s Paulton Rovers.

Manager John Allen said: “Dan is equally at home in the no.10 role or playing out wide. Having played previously at Bradford Town and at a higher level with Bristol Manor Farm and Frome Town in addition to Paulton, he is an exciting addition to our evolving first-team squad.” A visit in the league to Clevedon Town was next up for Keynsham. After going behind in the second minute through an horrendous deflection, the hosts went two up soon after half-time. However, Allen then introduced new signing Dan Cottle, who helped to change the game. He firstly provided the assist for top scorer Will Hailston to notch his 12th goal of the season, and then found space in the box to score a deserved equaliser in the 86th minute after a fine through ball from Hailston.

The following weekend involved a long trip to North Devon to face Ilfracombe Town, but the Ks unfortunately suffered their first away league defeat of the season. After the hosts took the lead shortly after half-time, Jordan Metters scored a superb equaliser five minutes later. However, it was a case of the hosts taking their chances and Keynsham not, as they secured a 3-1 victory. Keynsham Town reserves are also placed in the top half of the Uhlsport Somerset County Premier League, while the Keynsham under-18s have won two and lost two of their Western Counties Floodlit Youth League games so far this season. Until the next issue of the Keynsham Voice, you can keep up to date with club news via their website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The club’s home fixtures for the coming month are as follows: Sat Oct 30: First Team v Cadbury Heath (League) 3pm Sat Nov 6: First Team v Buckland Athletic (League) 3pm Tue Nov 9: U18s v Ashton & Backwell U18s (League) 7.45pm Sat Nov 27: First Team v Wellington (League) 3pm Tue Nov 30: U18s v Bitton U18s (League) 7.45pm
