Plans to build 36 flats at former care home

A TOTAL of 36 flats could be built on the site of a former care home in Keynsham. Since the Treetops care home in St Clements Road closed down in 2018, there have been repeated attempts to redevelop the site. The empty building has also become the target of anti-social behaviour, with young people causing damage and starting fires. An application to demolish the building and build 39 flats was dismissed by a planning inspector in April 2022, and an attempt to get permission for 30 apartments on the site was turned down by Bath and North East Somerset Council later in the year. Now Treetops has submitted a new planning application to knock down the building - which was constructed in 1992 - and build 36 flats on the site in two three-storey buildings. Flats would be a mix of one, two, and three bed apartments. A total of 30 car parking spaces would be provided, as well as another five to be shared with the adjoining Temple House Health n Turn to Page 2

The developer describes it as a “sustainable” location, with good access to local bus links and cycle routes. A design and access statement submitted with the application said: “The development will contribute to the housing need and provide a mix of residential types. The scheme aims to fully exploit the views to the south and east, creating residences that

are lovely places to live.” Treetops said that it had developed its plans since the last planning refusal, incorporating feedback from Design West (Design Review Panel). Library cafe opens new chapter for Pam, 81 A CAFÉ run by 81-year-old Pam Sales is proving a hit with visitors to Keynsham Library. The library asked her to run the café after the previous one closed. She said: “I went to the library because I wanted to use the computer to refresh my health and safety certificate, and they said ‘you’re just the person we need’.” Pam’s Pantry is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday each week from 10am to 2pm, as well as Saturdays when the monthly farmers’ market is held on Market Walk, outside the library’s entrance. Although it’s unpredictable which days will be busiest, the café is in demand when mums bring their tots to the library for Baby Bounce and Rhyme Times on Tuesdays and Storytime on Thursdays. In running the café, Pam can draw on her experience in baking and making meals as a volunteer for St John’s Church. The library café does not have

cooking facilities, so Pam’s menu consists mainly of crumpets, toasted teacakes, tea, coffee and cake, some of which is homemade. She runs the café by herself, saying: “The kitchen is beautifully laid out and not very large. I can manage it myself without worry.” Pam praised the library’s manager and staff for their support. “They go over and above to help me, putting my board outside when the café is open.” One reason she opened the café is because she wanted a fresh challenge. “I’ve always dealt with lots of people. It’s nice to do something different and meet new people, but it hasn’t taken me away from the church because I love it.” She added: “I get customers from all walks of life – the elderly and people on their own. They can sit down and there’s no time limit. It’s very informal and friendly, a welcoming place for people to come.”

High Street shop taken over THE former CM3 discount shop in the High Street has been taken over by another discount retailer, Buyology, which also has stores in Newport and Barry in South Wales. The CM3 chain shut all its stores on September 20 and said it had gone into liquidation.

Brighter future for popular woodland BETTER pathways, new seating and improved access for people with mobility and sensory impairments are among the improvements planned for Manor Road Community Woodland in Keynsham following a public consultation. Feedback from woodland users has helped Bath & North East Somerset Council identify the priorities to improve the well-used nature reserve, which also includes better signage and maps, new ponds and gate repairs. Ways to incorporate natural play facilities, nature trails, volunteering opportunities and a new maintenance plan for the wildflower meadow and existing pond will also be explored. Work to replace the boardwalk with recycled plastic decking was due to begin from the week starting October 30. The public consultation, held from May to July this year, sought to understand who uses the woodland and why, what visitors would like to see provided in the future and to gather feedback on the suggested improvements. A report on the main findings from the 200 responses received shows that 74% of respondents visit the woodland regularly, with 32% of those being daily. The three main reasons for visiting were

to enjoy nature, exercise and walk one or more dogs. A total of 75% of respondents travel to the woodland on foot, with 81% living within a kilometre. An ecological survey and accessibility audit were also carried out to identify measures to improve the woodlands’ biodiversity, as well as its accessibility. Councillor Tim Ball, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, said: “Manor Road Community Woodland is an important ‘green lung’ between Keynsham and Saltford. “Through this project, we want to create accessible routes in and around the woodland

so that more people can enjoy everything it has to offer, as well as improving the seating and entrances. “These plans will encourage greater biodiversity as well, increasing pollination and supporting climate regulation.” B&NES Council manages the woodland with support from the Friends of Manor Road Community Woodland to conserve its woodland, meadow and water environments, which are home to diverse wildlife and plant species. The Friends of Manor Road Community Woodland said: “We are very pleased with the results from the consultation and the ecological report. It covers everything that we hoped for. “It is very ambitious so the next important step is to prioritise the tasks to determine what can be achieved within the budget and what should be done first. The Friends Group have asked to be involved in this step. “Plans are already in hand to replace the boardwalk by the pond, which is something that the group has been pressing for, so that’s a good start.” The improvement works will be funded by Section 106 payments which councils receive from developers to improve local amenities for new and existing residents.

We will act on anti-social behaviour

STEPS are being taken to tackle the recent spate of anti-social behaviour, says Keynsham Town Council. It wants to assure residents, businesses and visitors that it is working closely with community organisations and individuals to try and resolve the issue. Town clerk Dawn Drury said: “We’re taking the recent increase of anti-social behaviour in Keynsham very seriously. “We want to better understand the root cause of the behaviour in order to implement effective and long-lasting change – for the community, for the businesses and, importantly, for the young people affected.” As part of a joint commitment between the town council and Bath and North East Somerset Council, it has been agreed that ‘Street Doctors’ (junior doctors) will provide training to the town clerk and youth staff, as well as sessions at the TimeOut Centre for the young people. This training aims to give

young people first-aid skills to keep themselves and their friends safer, whilst also discussing related issues. Avon Fire and Rescue’s fire safety intervention scheme will work with young people who have been misusing fire in their homes, communities or schools. This is to address the numerous fires started by young people at the derelict former Treetops care home in St Clements Road. The town clerk, or a representative of the town council’s youth service, will attend the monthly Avon and Somerset Police anti-social behaviour meetings to share intelligence-gathering. The town clerk will also attend a meeting with the department within B&NES Council that deals with missing children, to better understand how its arrangements work. Meanwhile, as reported in last month’s Voice, local police aim to make more regular foot patrols across the town.

TWO youths were seen trying to break into two empty properties on Tintagel Close, Keynsham, at 1.40pm on Tuesday October 10. The offenders, aged between 11 and 14, used broken paving slabs to try to break the windows. They also tried to knock the key safes for the properties off the wall. The police reference number for this crime is 5223247424. In two earlier incidents, a group of five or six youths broke into empty flats at Tintagel Close and caused damage.

The break-ins occurred at 6.30pm and 6.50pm on Friday October 6 and 4.45pm and 6.40pm on Saturday October 7. The police reference numbers are 5223244311 and 5223244986. Police have asked anyone with any information about these incidents, especially CCTV images, to call them on 101, give the call handler the relevant reference number and ask that the call is tagged as Neighbourhood Watch. Let’s hear it for our new horn players KEYNSHAM Orchestra will now sound even better than ever, thanks to its latest recruits. A symphony orchestra needs four horn players for most of its repertoire, and Keynsham Orchestra has had only one or two regular players for the last couple of decades, meaning that extra players had to be found for concerts. But new recruits joining up means the orchestra now has four regular players. Chairwoman Jane Smith said: “Having four horns at rehearsals makes huge difference to the orchestra. The sound is rich and warm, and we don’t have gaps in the music where the horns play.” The orchestra’s next concert is on Saturday November 25 at

Concern over bid for industrial units

A DECISION on whether two more industrial units can be built at Pixash Business centre in Keynsham has been deferred. Planning officers for Bath and North East Somerset Council had recommended that the scheme be approved. But ward councillor Andy Wait told the planning committee the application would be an overdevelopment of the site, which is near the Hygge Park housing estate, the planned Withies Green homes site, the new recycling centre and the Meryton Place nursing home. He said that although Keynsham Town Council did not object to the application, it did raise concerns about the development being class B2, which could have a detrimental effect if the wrong type of industry was permitted so close to people’s homes. Existing businesses were also concerned they could be adversely affected. Cllr Wait said a ‘swept path analysis’ of vehicle manoeuvrability should have included both HGVs and articulated lorries. He added that there had been a right of way in place for 80 years

and a covenant agreed in 1998 requiring access at all times. Cllr Wait said this was likely to be broken by the application. The committee was told that council officers felt that HGVs and articulated lorries could turn in the new access road and there was enough room for vehicles to load and unload. There were no mitigations included for neighbours being overlooked as there was a distance of 27 metres between the development and homes, which was sufficient in planning terms. The planning committee decided to defer its decision and to visit the site. It wants to allow the developer to provide a swept path analysis for 16-metre vehicles, and it has requested more information to show that the viability of existing businesses would not be adversely affected. The committee is also seeking more clarity on ownership and use of the access road, and a review of the class B2 use to see if conditions could be attached about the future use of the site. It also wants more information about the viability of the loading and unloading of forklift trucks.

A4 bus lanes not the answer, says Labour DEDICATED bus lanes on the A4 Keynsham bypass are not the solution for better and cleaner travel, according to Keynsham & Saltford Labour Party. The party has responded to a consultation by the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) on proposals to boost bus, cycling and walking options along the route. Under the proposals, bus lanes would be installed along the length of the bypass in each direction, leaving just one lane on each side for all other traffic. But Keynsham & Saltford Labour Party believes that installing the bus lanes would be a mistake and says that offering people cheap and convenient alternatives to driving is a better approach. It said: “After consultation with B&NES and WECA, we understand that they believe that the bus lane would provide guaranteed regularity of service and speed of travel between Bristol and Bath.” But it added: “It does seem that in the search for a minute or two extra time-saving along the A4, they ignore the hold-ups for that bus trying to leave Bath and its traffic lights and the lights in Saltford and Brislington too. “Our concern is that if a dedicated lane is provided, it will mean hold-ups for traffic, and additional traffic using Keynsham as a bypass for the bypass.” Instead, the party recommends a regular minibus service from outlying estates to the town centre, railway station and the proposed mobility hubs at Hicks Gate and Station Road, on the edge of Keynsham Memorial Park. Under the A4 proposals, cyclists would be allowed to ride through the park to reach the hub. The Labour party said it acknowledged some people’s concerns about cyclists and children mixing and that great care and planning would be required to ensure a safe place for children to play. It also noted that a large green area next to the skate park would be lost to the hub. But it said “the principle of connecting

How a mobility hub could look - the proposed facility on the edge of Keynsham Memorial Park could include a bus stop with shelters, screens showing live bus times, bike storage, mobile phone charging, toilets, and wi-fi. The site, next to the skate park, is also the location favoured by people campaigning for a pump track, as reported in last month’s Voice. Keynsham to both the Hick’s Gate faster bus hub and the station, whilst allowing cyclists to join the A4 at this point, is largely approved of.” The party says it also supports efforts to reduce air pollution on the busy A4 route. “We believe that reducing carbon dioxide in the environment is a proven fact and necessity. We don’t believe that attacking these facts with ‘anti-car’ accusations is helpful by our current government because it undermines the genuine efforts to make improvements that our councils and WECA are attempting. “However, we do believe that offering the public cheap and convenient alternative options to driving is the correct approach. “If we can create a transport system here in Keynsham that will pick you up from your street every 20 minutes, take you to the train station or to the bus hub to get you to Bristol or Bath in 20 minutes for a few pounds, our residents might consider that option and save

Keynsham & Saltford Labour Party has agreed, saying: “Although we are asked to consult directly on the suggestion provided, we must underline our belief that improved rail infrastructure is cheaper and more straightforward. “We would ask for the reinstatement of the Saltford station, which our colleagues have been calling for, for the past 20 years. “We would also suggest that a station at Brislington would bring further benefit too.” The party adds: “We believe that some of these proposals go some way in achieving our desire for improved transportation around Keynsham - they just don’t take us far enough.”

CRY working to save lives in Jack’s memory WELLSWAY School in Keynsham has hosted a cardiac screening team for the fifth time in memory of Jack Boulton. Over the two-day event, 200 young people were screened, the vast majority of whom were aged 14 to 17. Jack Boulton’s family first became involved with the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) following his sudden death in August 2009. He was aged just 17. Jack’s family have received a great deal of support from the local community, and the screening event by CRY was set up as a result of fundraising efforts and donations. Jack’s parents Dave and June said: “CRY is like a family to us that we didn’t expect to be part of. In Jack’s memory, we have now screened over 1,000 people and we remain committed to supporting CRY in raising awareness and prevention of future young deaths.” Every week in the UK, at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions, with 80% of young sudden cardiac deaths occurring with

The CRY team at Wellsway School, with Dave Boulton (second from right). The cardiac screening is carried out in memory of Dave’s son Jack, inset right no prior symptoms. ON THE BEAT

Did you witness attack in the High Street? WE try to monitor social media as much as we can, and we are seeing more and more that stolen items are being found and their location highlighted. This can result in them being stolen again before the police have officially been informed of the theft. As well as reducing crime and preventing items from being stolen, we also need to recover items promptly so we have a chance to get them back to their owners. There are a number of ways to report these issues to us the best, if it is not an emergency, is to call 101. n There has been a lot of social media comment on disorder that occurred on Friday October 20, when officers were called to the High Street area at just after 5.30pm and found two men who had sustained injuries after being assaulted by a number of youths. Some of the offenders are said to have arrived on foot, others on an e-scooter and a bike. They were said to be wearing face coverings, including helmets or balaclavas.

with PC James Evans Both victims went to hospital with injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening. CCTV enquiries are being carried out and we’d ask any witnesses, or motorists with dashcams, who have not yet come forward to please call 101 and quote reference number 5223256991. n Although we have seen a marked reduction in the theft of motorcycles, as a force we are experiencing an increase in burglaries where the occupants are away on holiday, or the house is empty. Locally we are seeing a rise in

shed break-ins where bikes are the targets. With the clocks going back and darkness falling earlier, it is more important than ever to make your home look occupied. Please check that your outside lights are working, that outbuildings are secured with locks, and if you have CCTV or Ring-style doorbells that these are working and clear of obstructions. Check that any additional access to your property is secure, and try to make it as difficult as possible for someone to choose your address to be a target. With the nights drawing in, this creates opportunities to the opportunist thief who might use this to their benefit. Let’s try to be good neighbours and report anything suspicious, not only at our property but also in our local area. n At this time of year, we see an increase in rogue traders. Please be vigilant if anyone visits your address and offers services to be carried out immediately. Trading Standards say you should be given

14 days to consider an offer of works rather than being rushed into deciding then and there for what is normally offered as a discounted price. If you’re not sure, either contact us or do some research and take advice from people that you trust. n Keynsham’s Neighbourhood Policing Team have been joined by Police Sergeant Lisa AllertonBaldwin 3184. Lisa previously worked in Bath on their NPT and has years of experience in neighbourhood policing. I have no doubt she will be an asset to our team. n Just a reminder that the Remembrance parade takes place on the morning of Sunday November 12, setting off from Ashton Way to St John’s Church via the High Street, then, following a service, continuing to the Memorial Gates for the laying of the wreaths. This event has been well received over the past few years and I hope that it will be again this year. n Remembrance: Page 13

Town council backs Tidy effort by the Wombles idea for pump track THE idea of a pump track in Keynsham has won the backing of the town council. It has agreed to support it in principle, with various sites to be considered. Councillors will also visit the pump track at Temple Cloud, which is one of the local tracks that have inspired the campaigners behind the Keynsham bid. The Pump Track for Keynsham (PTFK) group say they would support any “accessible and inclusive” location, although they favour an area next to the skate park in Keynsham Memorial Park. Group member Chris Williams told the Voice last month: “It’s a central location and the area sees very little footfall compared to the rest of the park area, so a pump track here would not impact the general leisure space available whilst still being close to related amenities.

“It could be tucked away to the north of the skate park so as not to take up space used for festival activities on site. There is good access, and the ground is relatively flat.” But that area of the park has also been suggested as the possible site for a mobility hub as part of proposals by the West of England Combined Authority to transform travel along the A4 Keynsham bypass. A pump track is a looped, undulating course with banked corners which can be used by mountain bike, BMX and scooter riders, as well as skateboarders. It is designed to be used by riders ‘pumping’, generating momentum by up and down body movements, instead of pedalling or pushing. Other pump tracks in the local area include Stockwood, Hartcliffe and Brunel Way in Bristol.

KEYNSHAM Wombles held a Big Womble event on Saturday September 23 as part of their efforts to keep the town tidy. The volunteers met at St Francis Church and picked litter in the surrounding area. About 25 helpers took part, including some children, who collected stickers for their Womble sticker books - when they have completed five Wombles, they get a small prize. Everyone then gathered in the church hall for coffee and home-made cakes. For more information about Keynsham Wombles, or for details of the next Big Womble, email Erica on womble@transitionkeynsham.org

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

It’s time to switch back to public transport HAVE you caught a bus recently? Perhaps a train? Or maybe got on a bike? If not, please do give them a try. If just some of our car journeys were instead made by bus, train, WESTlink minibuses, e-scooters or the new WESTbikes then, despite what some would have us believe, it could help deal with the climate emergency, reduce pollution and boost our health to reduce the burden on the NHS, and cut congestion to aid our economy. Post pandemic, our travel habits have changed. Our trains had a 50-50 commuting to leisure split - now it’s only a third of passengers who are commuters. On buses, most passengers are now back, but they are travelling less often. Luckily there is no shortage of potential passengers out there, with one in nine regional commutes currently made by public transport. So if you can, do consider switching. This is the main reason for Birthday Buses. For those of you who don’t know about Birthday Buses, it’s a simple idea. Throughout the whole month of your birthday, you get unlimited free bus travel. You can apply at www. birthdaybus.co.uk/register. The whole point of Birthday Buses is to encourage people to try the bus - and then stick

with it to bring in more fares to invest in better local transport. So far, 52% of people who have used Birthday Buses say it has made them more likely to use public transport in the future. Of course, the proof is really if people keep using buses long term - but scientists tell us that a month is the minimum duration to create lasting behaviour change. So far, the early signs are positive. Once we’ve got new passengers, that cuts carbon and pollution (helping reduce the shocking 300 premature deaths locally every year from poor air quality), and cuts congestion (which costs our regional economy £300 million a year). It also brings in vital cash, for buses don’t run on kindness and fresh air. They cost money. Increasingly more money, as fuel costs have soared, and bus driver wages increased. The only way to have a growing and sustainable bus network in the future is to bring in more fare income. That’s especially the case for the buses that are subsidised by you, the hard-pressed taxpayer, through your council tax. Every extra passenger helps reduce the pressure to spend

taxpayer money on bus subsidies. We have to try new things. Just throwing taxpayers’ money at subsidising buses forever doesn’t work. You spend it. It runs out. Instead, I’m determined we do things differently here. Whether it’s Birthday Buses, WESTlink, where people share journeys, scooters, the new WESTbikes, or WESTlocal for innovative transport solutions, I’m determined we do things in a new way in the West. That’s why I’m driving through changes. So please give our public transport a go, to help create lasting improvements.

Solar farm plan for village site The Remembrance parade in Keynsham last year

Paying tribute to the fallen PEOPLE in Keynsham and Saltford will gather on Sunday November 12 to remember the service and sacrifice of members of the armed forces. The Remembrance parade in Keynsham will form in Ashton Way at 8.45am before proceeding through Rock Road, Temple Street, and the High Street to St John’s Church, for a service at 9.30am. After the service, the parade will muster at the rear of the church in the road known as The Park and will then proceed through Station Road, turning left into the High Street to form up behind the marching band. The parade will then proceed along the High Street via Bath Hill to the Memorial Gates. At 11am, the first maroon will start the two-minutes’ silence, the second maroon will end the silence, Last Post is played and the Kohema will be read. This will be followed by the laying of wreaths at the gates by the parade marshal, commemorating the British servicemen and women who fought for this country in conflicts including the two world wars.

The war memorial at Saltford Standards will form at the front of the parade and march off at 11.20am via Bath Hill, part of Temple Street, Rock Road and onto Ashton Way for dismissal. Rolling road closures will be in place between about 8.45am and 12 noon along the various parts of the parade route. In Saltford, the Scouts are again leading the arrangements for the village’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations. A parade by Scouts, Guides and Brownies will leave the

area in front of Saltford Hall for St Mary’s Church at around 9.30am. A memorial service will take place at the church at around 10am for those in the parade and representatives of the community only (due to space limitations in the church itself). Members of the public are welcome to join in the service from the churchyard (standing space only) and, if possible, a PA system will be used to share the service with those outside (to be confirmed). Following the service, the parade will leave St Mary’s at about 10.45am and head for the war memorial, where a short service will take place before the 11am silence. Wreaths will be laid, including one by Saltford parish councillor Julie Austwick on behalf of all Saltford residents. The parade will then return to Saltford Hall, where it will disperse. Road closures will be in place between 9.30am and 11.45am on routes between Saltford Hall (Wedmore Road) and St Mary’s Church (High Street), including Broadway, Stratton Road, Norman Road and Beech Road.

A NEW solar farm is being planned on fields by the village of Burnett. No planning application has yet been made, but Conrad Energy submitted an application to Bath and North East Somerset Council for a pre-planning application screening opinion on whether an environmental impact assessment would be needed - often the first key step for such projects. The solar farm, at a site in Middle Piece Lane, would cover about 66 acres, although that includes some areas without solar panels where new vegetation and areas to boost biodiversity are planned. A statement submitted with the application said: “The proposed development responds to the government’s support for solar energy by providing a greater renewable energy supply that would reduce carbon emissions and assist in establishing a diversity of energy sources in the UK. The biodiversity of the site would also be significantly improved.” The B&NES Council planning reference is 23/03653/SCREEN. John Wimperis, Local Democracy Reporting Service

Van tools stolen A white Ford Transit was taken from Lays Drive, Keynsham, between 4.30pm on Wednesday October 11 and 7.30am the next day. The vehicle was later found but all the tools had been stolen.

Reuse shop is open for business GARDENING tools, a unicycle, golf clubs and skis were among the items that went on sale when the reuse and recycling shop opened on the ground floor of the Keynsham Recycling Hub. The new Reuse Shop will offer low-cost, quality second-hand items that have been donated by residents using the recycling centre. Donations on display include crockery, bedside and dining tables, and adult and children’s bikes. The official opening comes just over four months after Bath & North East Somerset Council opened the new recycling centre. Councillor Tim Ball, cabinet member for neighbourhood services, used donated garden shears to cut the ‘ribbon’ made from hessian sacks. The Reuse Shop is open to B&NES residents on Wednesday,

Salt barn for safer roads

Councillor Tim Ball cuts the ribbon with a pair of donated shears to open the Reuse Shop at Keynsham Recycling Hub Thursday and Friday from 9am to 1pm and Saturday 9.30am to 3pm, although the opening times may vary to ensure there is no impact on queueing times for residents wanting to use the recycling centre. The council has partnered with Bath Share and Repair to check, PAT-test and sell small household electrical items, such as lamps, kettles and toasters on site. Garden waste that has

been collected for composting on site and through the fortnightly green bin service will also be available for purchase as a peatfree soil conditioner. Residents wishing to donate second-hand items can drop them in the signposted area to the left outside the reuse shop entrance. More information about the Reuse Shop can be found on the council website www.bathnes.gov.uk/reuse

A NEW salt barn at Keynsham Recycling Hub will play its part in keeping local roads safe this winter. Once operational in December, the storage facility will allow Bath & North East Somerset Council to hold 1,000 tonnes of salt. More than 2,000 tonnes has already been procured and is in dry storage at the council’s Clutton depot, with all 434 of the council’s grit bins currently being checked and refilled. Spreading gritting salt onto highways helps prevent ice forming and makes roads safer. A dry run has also taken place, making sure all of the council’s nine gritting lorries are ready after their summer services. Gritting teams will prioritise A roads, B roads, bus routes and roads that provide access to schools and hospitals. If there is an empty grit bin in your area, it can be reported through FixMyStreet.

COUNTRYSIDE is set to be removed from the green belt between Bristol and Keynsham to allow hundreds of new homes to be built in Brislington. Bristol City Council bosses have earmarked between 500 and 750 homes at a new neighbourhood off the A4 Bath Road on the city’s western edge in the authority’s Draft Local Plan. Bellway Homes revealed plans earlier this year for 555 homes and a new “local centre” with shops and a community centre on five fields between Brislington park and ride and the former Wyevale Garden Centre, next to the boundary with Bath & North East Somerset. The Local Plan said this would require a “limited release of land” from the green belt. “However, a substantial extent of openness between Bristol and Keynsham would remain and the integrity of the

Bristol Bath Green Belt as a whole will be retained,” it said. The park and ride could be moved to land near the Hicks Gate roundabout as part of the plans, the document said. It added: “The allotments on Bath Road are an important local facility providing opportunities for food growing. The allotments will be retained.” The Local Plan – a 15-year blueprint setting out where future homes, jobs, transport, shops and leisure should go – was set to be approved by full council on Tuesday, October 31, before the public can comment, and the document is then sent for public examination by government planning inspectors. It says the green-belt boundaries, while largely unchanged, have been “revised to reflect exceptional circumstances”. Adam Postans, Local Democracy Reporting Service

We’ll fight to make our High Street safer A CROSS-party group of district councillors are continuing their battle to make Keynsham High Street safer despite a previous setback. Their proposal to commit Bath and North East Somerset Council to investigate the costs of fixing the cycle lane had been due to go to vote at a council meeting on September 21. But they withdrew their motion amid fears it would be “torpedoed” by the council’s Liberal democrat administration. Since the cycle lane was introduced as part of the High Street’s redesign, there have been more than 60 officially reported fall injuries, although the six councillors say the number of casualties is about 100. The team of four Lib Dems, one Labour and one Conservative have been holding meetings to compile a report to the council seeking a change to the layout to make it safer for pedestrians and as a precursor to a motion for a future council meeting.

These councillors hope to persuade Bath & North East Somerset Council to act to halt the continuing casualities in the High Street Lib Dem councillor Hal MacFie said: “As a group representing the town, we cannot stand idly by whilst members of our community continue to suffer serious injuries. “We are taking advice from professionals in the trade as far as alternative styles of kerb are concerned, as well as from the Royal National Institute for the

Blind and also Sustrans.” Councillor David Biddleston (Labour) said: “The strength of feeling and concern within the local community has been demonstrated by some 500 members of the public who have so far signed the petition asking for a resolution to the ongoing number of casualties.” The group is determined to

persuade the council to take action, despite the cabinet’s view that the cycle lane complies with national standards. Conservative councillor Alan Hale said: “It was only after much consideration that we agreed to withdraw the motion at the last council meeting. “It was done because an amendment was being suggested by the cabinet which would have quashed our motion and closed down any further action for six months. “We are hopeful that working cross party will demonstrated the strength of feeling and concern in Keynsham regarding the continuing casualties.” The group are still waiting to see the results of the road safety audit that were scheduled to be available in mid-September. They encourage anyone who has suffered a fall on the High Street to report the incident on the Fix My Street page of the B&NES Council website. l Letters: Page 26

New role considered for nursing home A KEYNSHAM nursing home that was criticised by a care watchdog last year could be given a new role. A Care Quality Commission inspection at Charlton House last October found the quality of care at the home was inadequate. A follow-up inspection in January found that progress had been made but the service still needed improvement. Charlton House is run by Bath and North East Somerset Council, which is considering “reshaping” services at three of its community resource centres people. The Keynsham centre currently has just 11 out of 30 beds occupied. Under the proposals, those 11 places could be moved to Cleeve Court in Bath, which could become a “centre of excellence” for dementia care. This would then free up Charlton House to offer other care or accommodation services, such as a ‘step-down’ ward over winter. The other facility affected is Combe Lea in Midsomer Norton, whose services would be enhanced to enable younger people with complex needs to live closer to home. A report before Councillor Alison Born, cabinet member for adult services,

recommends approval for a six-week consultation. Councillor Born said: “I am acutely aware that these are people’s homes and so residents, their families and staff must have their say.” “Running alongside any decision is also the fact that providing care is very costly and like every council there are huge pressures on our budgets. “I shall give careful consideration to the report and the next steps for our community resource centres in the best interest of the people we care for now and into the future.” Charlton House is registered to provide 30 nursing care beds, Combe Lea to provide 30 beds and Cleeve Court 45 beds. The council

says it has invested significantly in the three centres, but rising costs could see the service face a potential £1 million overspend in the next financial year. The report before Councillor Born says there is ample alternative provision of general nursing care home services for adults in B&NES but there are shortfalls in complex needs services. And it says that the Charlton House building, which is relatively new and is of high quality, is suitable for several accommodation uses. Charlton House was transferred to the council in 2020 after Sirona announced it was handing back the contract. The CQC report in October found that one resident was left sitting in urine overnight and that another had not eaten or drunk anything for two days. The council apologised for the conditions in the now council-run care home, with Councillor Born telling a council scrutiny panel: “We are extremely sorry that we have let people down and have not provided the consistently high quality of care that residents and their families expect and deserve.”

SALTFORD SCOUTS

Making friends and memories

Having a go on a hovercraft is just one of the activities that have been enjoyed by Saltford Scouts volunteers

HAVE you ever considered volunteering? It can be very rewarding for yourself and the young people within our group at Saltford Scouts. Volunteering is good for boosting your wellbeing, developing CV-friendly skills, making friends and building memories. Since I joined 1st Saltford 11 years ago, I have met some incredible people. You are never too old to volunteer. We have grandparents who help with a bit of DIY and maintenance to help to run weekly sessions for our young people. I started as a parent helper when my son joined Beavers, holding a number of roles working with young people and supporting adults in the group and district. My son is now a leader himself and enjoys sharing his experiences with Scouts and Explorers. We frequently have exScouts who come back as leaders - I think they also see it as a way to scout and are proud to do so. I recently asked Charlotte, one of our Cub leaders, about some of the memories she has made. Her most enjoyable moments included investing Cubs in dens that they had built and having a go on a hovercraft!

Matt says: “I feel privileged to be able to volunteer and support 1st Saltford Scouts. It is personally rewarding to see the contribution to the community and young people of Saltford that being able to provide a successful annual Scouting programme brings.” We are always looking for volunteers to support our fun and friendly group and share our journey. Do you want to have some fun, cut some grass, write press articles, share our successes on social media, or paint some doors? Help to run evenings teaching young people skills for life, which can be as simple as tying a knot, lighting a fire or making a cuppa. Do you like admin and spreadsheets? We can help you there too. Council scores high on positive climate action THE solar installation on the new Keynsham Recycling Hub and campaigns such as Bright Green Homes and Solar Together have helped Bath & North East Somerset Council win recognition as one of the UK’s top ten local authorities on climate action. Data published by Climate Emergency UK showed that B&NES scored 57% on its council climate action scorecard, ranking seventh overall. Only 41 of the UK’s 388 local and combined authorities scored above 50%, with the average score being 32% Climate Emergency UK scored all UK councils against seven criteria: biodiversity; buildings and heating; collaboration and engagement; governance and finance; planning and land use; transport; and waste reduction and food. The council ranks third overall on biodiversity with a

Rare moth at Burnett Photo: John Aldridge WHAT do you do if something like this turns up in your moth trap? Although it’s small and distinctive, it cannot be found in the most popular field guides. This is because it is very rare in the UK. They are common in the tropics but one could hardly describe Elm Farm in Burnett as tropical. It was difficult to find a common name for it but several candidates came to light after a bit of research. Maize Moth is used on a nationally recognised website (NBN Atlas) so perhaps we should go with that. The Elm Farm one was actually easy to identify. A photo had been put on a local entomological WhatsApp group of one caught elsewhere in Avon two nights previously, so the identification had already been done. There have only been a few previous records in the UK, so what has attracted them to our shores? The likely explanation is the recent hot weather in Europe has brought them northwards, perhaps linked to global warming. An alternative explanation is that they have been accidentally imported by the horticultural or farming businesses. This is what happened with the Box-tree Moth that has decimated box bushes and can now be found in hundreds of gardens. If Maize Moths become established in the UK, the risk is that they could do serious damage to maize, beet or spinach crops. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. It was nice to get the opportunity to see and photograph this particular one though.

n METHODIST CHURCH

Nature’s crowning glory I was really excited to see a bit of good news about nature recovery recently. It’s a new ‘super’ nature reserve, the second in the King’s Series of National Nature Reserves, established to celebrate the coronation of King Charles. Under the initiative, five major National Nature Reserves will be set up every year for the next five years. This latest one is right on our doorstep along a stretch of the Mendips. It joins up 31 existing nature reserves in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between Wells and Weston-super-Mare, and also takes in over 400 hectares of land that’s never been managed for conservation before. It’s a fantastic example of organisations working together in a common cause to make a real difference to nature recovery in our area. It takes in lots of different habitats like ancient woodland, cave systems and species-rich grassland, and will help protect iconic species like the skylark and

horseshoe bat, as well as lesserknown ones like the black oil beetle. What is really exciting is the fact that it gives local people access to nature along a popular walking route, taking in local beauty spots like Weston Beacon and Stoke Camp. Joining up bigger landscapes and allowing nature to move across them, while giving people opportunities to connect with the natural world, are hugely important. We all know that healthy ecosystems are the backbone of a healthy society, giving us good food, clean water and air, and storing carbon. But nature is also critically important for our mental health and wellbeing, so making access to this new ‘super’ nature reserve will be an amazing resource for the millions of people living in Bristol and the towns in the area. I for one can’t wait to get out there and enjoy the beautiful Mendips. Liz Barling

Help us to get growing! ARE you passionate about encouraging our local Keynsham community to work together to make a difference in our lives? Could you help to guide and support a group of people who would like their community to look different? Then this could be the opportunity for you. Keynsham Methodist Church have the opportunity to “gift” the use of some land at the rear of their Queens Road premises to create a community garden. To manage this project, we need to form a group of five people who would rejoice in the title of

directors of the company we would need to create. Whilst this title may sound daunting, it is nothing to be apprehensive about. The church is committed to developing this project with the co-operation and enthusiasm from the local community. So we are looking for two volunteers to join the three whom the church has recruited from its members. If you would like to be involved, please contact me through the church office on 0117 9149408 or by email on office@ keynshammethodistchurch.co.uk Mike Barrow

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

How brass-making came to Keynsham A Guinea kettle, made at Saltford Brass Mill

T

HE recent Keynsham Through Time exhibition has raised awareness of our local brass industry, so this article will look at how and why it became established. Brass is a very useful metal: hard, capable of being worked and, most importantly, it does not corrode. It is an alloy of copper and zinc, but it is not easy to produce. It was made in the ancient world, but the first brass industry in western Europe grew up in Flanders and Germany in the 14th century. Continental countries traded the metal to west Africa and in the 1600s London merchants became involved, importing then re-exporting the goods. However, Bristol merchants were barred from this trading until after the Glorious Revolution in 1688, which led to the abolition of the restrictive Royal Charters. They knew there was a demand in west Africa, especially for pans of various types and for manillas (horse-shoe shaped wrist-bands used as currency). These goods were traded with African chieftains for enslaved people, who were shipped across the Atlantic. To produce these goods, the Bristol Brass Company was founded in 1702 by a group of Quaker investors. They appointed Abraham Darby as the ‘active man’ of the company. He was the ideal man for the role and had to set up factories to manufacture brass and then turn the metal into saleable products. A copper-smelting works had been established at Conham in 1696, using ore from Devon and Cornwall. Zinc ore, in the form of calamine, is found in association with lead, and was available not far away, on Mendip. Coal for heating was available in Bristol, so Darby set up the brass foundry at Baptist Mills on the

Chew Mill, after it had ceased to be a brass mill River Frome. He had first visited the brassmaking areas in the Low Countries, to learn the processes used and also to recruit skilled workers to move to England. Obviously, water-power was available on the Frome, but it was insufficient for the “battery” mills that were needed. Darby looked elsewhere and decided that the River Chew suited his purpose. So, in June 1705, the lease was acquired for Downe Mill on the Chew in Keynsham, Abraham Darby being one of the signatories. This mill was first recorded in the Domesday book and later belonged to Keynsham Abbey. It was renamed Chew Mill and is today the location of the bandstand in the Memorial Park. The mill was converted to battery, and housed three waterwheels. “Battery” is used in the sense of hitting, and each wheel drove three hammers, at very high speed. The hammers were mounted on arms about two metres long and were used to beat and shape thin sheets of brass into the pan shapes, collectively known as hollow-ware. Demand must have been high as this mill soon proved inadequate. By 1711, the company

photo courtesy of Saltford Brass Mill project had established a mill on the River Avon at Weston, near Bath, and another on the Chew at Woodborough. The largest battery mill, at Saltford, was leased by the company in 1721, and in 1754 it housed 12 hammers in three workshops. Materials and finished goods would originally have been moved in and out of the Chew Mill by water. Completion of the Avon Navigation in 1727 made this more efficient as it meant that boats could by-pass the several weirs on the River Avon. Chew Mill was operated by the Bristol Brass Company until about 1870, when brass-making at the site ended. As a footnote, the Brass Mill on the Avon, today a restaurant, was not used for manufacturing hollow-ware but wire. This came later and its history is a separate story. l If you want to learn more about the brass industry, the history society’s new book, Brass Tracks, will be on sale at this month’s Farmers’ Market. And to see the only preserved battery mill in the country, visit Saltford Brass Mill when it reopens next spring. Richard Dyson

POETRY CORNER Winter Approaches November’s upon us, where has this year gone? The days are now shorter, warm clothes we must don. Rain lashes at windows, the sun may peep through Cheering each day up for me and for you. But despite the dark days there is always a plus, With so many blessings there’s no need to fuss. At times we’ll be busy, some days may be dull, But there’s many a moment we’ll welcome a lull Reflecting, remembering, a special event, Happy times in the summer with friends that we spent. And be sure in all weathers one friend’s always near, Just whisper God’s name, He’s there and he’ll hear. Sylvia Kirby

The winner by a whisker! KEYNSHAM resident Rob Stewart celebrated his 70th birthday in a colourful way to raise money for Dorothy House Hospice. As reported in our September issue, Rob pledged to have his moustache and goatee beard dyed in Dorothy House’s corporate colours of pink and purple, but his wife Annie thought it was a “crazy” idea. So the couple set up two JustGiving pages – one to vote for Rob to go ahead and the other to vote against – stating that whichever page earned more money by the cut-off date of Rob’s birthday would determine whether he went ahead. As our photo shows, more sponsors voted in favour, so Rob is now sporting a pink moustache and a purple goatee - in permanent dye. Rob said he wished to thank all his family and friends who contributed, along with quite a few Voice readers. He is particularly grateful to the Hannah of Bi-Design Hair & Beauty in Queens Road, Keynsham, as she not only provided her services free of charge but also chipped in for the appeal. At the time of going to press, the total raised stood at over £1,300.

Rob is grateful to Dorothy House for its support to him and family members, and he has been a volunteer for the charity for the past 10 years. You can still see the fundraising pages, with the amusing and sometimes moving messages of support, by going to the JustGiving website and search for “Do it Rob! Dye your whiskers!” or “Don’t be a Wally Rob!”

Keynsham Pharmacy’s new home in High Street

Bereavement support service gets a boost

KEYNSHAM Pharmacy has taken over the former Lloyds Pharmacy in the High Street. The whole team will be moving from Station Road on November 15. The Station Road branch will close and its future is yet to be decided. A spokesman said: “It’s an opportunity to operate from bigger and more centrally located premises. It will have the same services as those we have been providing at Station Road, and patients won’t have to do anything regarding the switchover.”

A LOCAL bereavement support service has learned that an organisation it is partnered with has won two national awards. Bereavement Support Keynsham is one of the services listed on the AtaLoss website, which has resources for bereaved people and the professionals who support them. Ataloss won the awards from Ai International for best bereavement signposting website and best bereavement information provider 2023. Alan Hale, Bereavement Support Keynsham’s coordinator, said: “Being listed on an award-winning national website as a bereavement support organisation is obviously a great fillip for us and provides a reassurance for those suffering bereavement who come to us.” Since it started almost two years ago, Bereavement Support Keynsham has been providing support to between 15 and 20

visitors per month on average. It runs a drop-in service on the first Wednesday of the month from 5.30pm to 7pm, then on the fourth Monday of the month from 2pm to 4pm. The venue is Keynsham Baptist Church Hall on the High Street, but the group is not connected to the church and is not a religious organisation. Anyone suffering bereavement is welcome. There is no need to book and there is no charge. All the volunteers have received facilitation training. They do not offer counselling. For more information, call 07776 493221. l The service is also seeking more volunteers. Applicants need to be mature, have good interpersonal skills and life experience, and be a good listener. The service advises people against applying if they have lost someone close to them in the past year.

Wellsway road reopens as work ends

THE Wellsway road in Keynsham has reopened to traffic to through traffic following the completion of a sewer scheme. The B3116 was closed in July between Rock Hill Estate and the Bath Road roundabout to allow construction of the new relief sewer in the road. It will help address issues with sewage system flooding in the area around Limekilns Close and Keynsham Cricket Club, with two separate systems now connected by 170 metres of new sewer.

Meanwhile, a two-year programme of improvements by Wessex Water is under way at the town’s water recycling centre off Broadmead Lane. The company is spending £16.5 million to enhance the site, allow further infrastructure to be installed, and update processes for the treatment of waste water. In Saltford, the construction of a bridge over the River Avon to provide a permanent access to the Mead Lane water recycling

centre is nearing completion, with a two-year £34 million expansion of the site getting under way in early 2024. Boosting the capacity of this water recycling centre, which treats sewage and waste water from Bath and the surrounding area, will enable Wessex Water to treat more than 800 litres of waste water per second – around a 40 per cent increase on current flows – to help meet increasing demands before it is returned to the environment.

Charity shop fashion is a hit on the catwalk A COMMUNITY fashion show with a difference has been hailed a success. The first ever Keynsham Re-loved event was a team effort by Keynsham Eco Festival, the town council and Keynsham Cultural Programme. Local residents sashayed down the catwalk at Fear Hall to encourage attendees to rethink their clothing purchases and support the charity shops along the High Street. Coinciding with the fashion show, a market of local retailers focusing on sustainable products and practices was on hand, as well as a lino print workshop by Paige and Wynter, where people could lino-print in their own items and learn how to upcycle them into bespoke designs. The models’ outfits were put together by local charity shops Age UK, British Heart Foundation, Mercy In Action, PDSA and St Peter’s Hospice. l Photos by Mike May

‘Bloody red gash’ is optical delusion KEYNSHAM Voice (issue 137) last month revealed that the bid of a bevy of Keynsham councillors to make safer the bloody gash cut through the heart of the town has failed. They all seem confounded by the complexity of it all, despite consultants ever close to hand with ready and expensive briefs, this way or that, or some way or other. It seems to us that, despite expensive consultancy proposals, the bloody gash should simply be healed by making the whole area into a lovely esplanade of pavement, with trees, planters and seating for poor old folk (thus saved from fools – sorry, falls). In the work of the aborted Keynsham Neighbourhood Plan, it was realised as not practical to close the High Street to all traffic both ways. One-way traffic was recognised as unavoidable in the medium term. However, it was

I understand that some people don’t think highly of the new bridge in Keynsham Park. However, as this photo shows, on sunny days a beautiful pattern of dots is revealed. Just right for small children to jump on. Mrs Mary O’Brien

never considered as a two-way street. No, just the one-way, certainly not with a bloody twoway red gash devoted to saving cyclists a few extra pedals along Ashton Way. The measurements involved for travelling toward Bristol are thus: a) if by Charlton Road, it is not needed at all; b) if by Rock Road, it’s shorter along Ashton Way; c) if from Chandag, it’s best along the bypass; d) if from Temple Street, it’s a whole extra 57 yards. Hmmm? So, is the cyclists’ lobby really demanding the bloody red gash remain tearing the heart of Keynsham on the basis that all the injuries, the loss of social facility, the potential for aesthetic improvement and environmental gain, is worth the 57 yards? Surely not. Of course, we will need some

expensive consultant to draw up some pics and specs for our in-house experts to dwell on so they can put the ‘right’ report that’s safe enough for our councillors to approve. Why is it so complicated to simply get rid of the delusion that the bloody red gash is somehow essential to the heart of Keynsham? How does the ‘bleedin obvious’, no bloody red gash, elude so many councillors, their expensive consultants and in-house experts? Are we under the illusion that our planners know what they are doing? Let’s look at an even more expensive delusion. Consider the latest ‘no idea’ perspective given by yet another hugely expensive consultancy laying out the A4 consultation which envisages bus lanes in addition to the bike lanes and even bus stops on the Keynsham bypass. Gosh? Terry Edwards, former chair of Keynsham Neighbourhood Development Plan, and Siri Edwards, former Keynsham town councillor

Halt the death of our High Street The ‘Death of the High Street’ is something that we should all be taking seriously. It is taking away the variety, vitality and attractiveness from our High Streets. I was in Keynsham High Street at around 10am on a recent Saturday morning ... a few people were milling around and that was it. I remember in the 1970s, one would visit the High Street and it was so busy you had a hard job not stepping into the road to pass people. It was vibrant, people going from shop to shop, buying their groceries and other essentials. Delicatessens, bakers, greengrocers, fishmongers, clothes shops, camera shops, hardware stores, toy shops, stationers, etc, etc. Walk down Keynsham High Street now and you find a sad collection of charity shops and cafes ... everyone presumably goes

to Tesco’s, Waitrose and Amazon. What’s to blame? Probably numerous factors, although some High Streets still maintain a modicum of interesting shops and outlets. Maybe it’s the availability of free parking, maybe good local bus services, maybe affordable shop rents ... there are numerous reasons, but something needs to be done. One frequently hears of small independent specialist businesses closing because of the high cost of maintaining a High Street shop and general overheads that favour ‘big business’. I would encourage you all to write to our MP, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, and ask him to press the government to DO SOMETHING. Maybe councils should be more proactive in compulsory purchasing shops in order to let them at a reasonable rent - perhaps allow councils to decide the rent based on the desirability and general rarity of the shop. Maybe hardware stores, book shops, greengrocers etc need the cheapest rents in order to encourage them in? But generally I think rents need to be low and business rates on small shops, say up to 150 sqm, should be zero. One can argue about the categories and sizes, but we need action now! Of course we need a balanced mix, a cafe to stop for a break, a restaurant for a meal, but government needs to help. We waste money making duff cycle lanes and putting bollards in, instead of making our High Streets places where we want to go and spend time and money. It can be done, look at small towns in France ... how do they maintain such a variety of small shops? Write to Sir Jacob, his contact form is on the internet. Do it now, it’ll only take five minutes. John Blanning, Keynsham

Road to the ridiculous FOLLOWING the ludicrous new transport scheme proposed by Dan Norris and BANES, had they thought of moving Keynsham High Street to the bypass? Just a silly thought on a par with silly bus ideas. Name and address supplied

n KEYNSHAM WALKERS ARE WELCOME

Stepping out for Children in Need

W

ITH the national BBC Children in Need Countryfile Ramble only a week away, it was time for Keynsham Walkers are Welcome to make their contribution. We always dedicate the last walk of our walking festival to this cause, and this year was no exception. The first walk of the festival was on a Friday evening, when we once again teamed up with Keynsham and Saltford Local History Society for a short walk around the centre of town, pointing out places of historical interest. Sadly, most of these have been demolished, so imagination was required. The walk started at St John’s Church, the oldest building in the town still in current use. Dave Johnson, chair of Keynsham Walkers are Welcome, led the walk, which continued by the abbey and into the Memorial Park to the bandstand area, where we had to picture what the Chew Mill looked like, as it was demolished some 60 years ago. The walk then carried on through the park to Dapps Hill, formerly known as Crox Bottom, then up Temple Street, finishing in the High Street, just as darkness was falling. Everyone commented on how enjoyable the evening was. The Saturday morning saw the start of the second walk of the festival, from the Memorial Park gates. This was the longest walk of the event, with a 10-mile trek along the River Avon to Compton Dando,

Walkers stepping out during the Walkers are Welcome’s walking festival. Right, walk leader Derek Butler and Walkers are Welcome chair Dave Johnson suitably attired for the BBC Children in Need Ramble then on to Woollard and Burnett. This walk included some steep and muddy sections. A stop was made at the Compton Inn for refreshments, before the journey back to Keynsham. It was disappointing that only six turned up for this walk. We have to thank Dawn Drury and her husband Trevor for organising and leading this walk. The second walk of the day started three hours later, again from the Memorial Park gates. This was a shorter 2.5-mile circular walk around Stockwood Vale, and 12 people attended. This was a very gentle social amble around the outskirts of Keynsham. The big event of the festival was on the Sunday, when 40 people

turned up for the BBC Children In Need Countryfile Ramble. Derek Butler and his wife Vanessa had already reccied the walk, and as in previous years we took a circular route to Hanham. This time Derek decided on an anticlockwork route, which was probably better than the previous routes. The conditions were perfect, with clear blue skies, which was far better than the forecast. Soon after the start, one of the walkers suffered a fall, grazing forehead, hands and knees, but after some attention by our first aider Dawn Drury, he was able to continue. Everyone was in good spirits as we walked along the River Avon

towards Londonderry Wharf, then headed up the hill to Hanham Woods. Passing by Hanham Court with its little church attached, we then descended to the Lock & Weir where we stopped for liquid refreshment. Suitably satiated, we then headed back to Keynsham along the River Avon. When the counting was done, we realised we had raised £270 towards Children in Need; a very creditable amount. Overall the event was classed as a success, and the organisers can look forward to making it an even better event next year. l The Walkers are Welcome quiz planned for November 10 has had to be postponed.

PEN TO PAPER To Autumn Time stands still while one reflects Upon the beauty of the scene Its peace, its stillness, of such effects In multi-coloured shades of green Are nature’s bounty to us all The waving birch, slim and straight The oak, the ash, the beech so tall Preserve as yet their leafy state But slowly turning autumn shades Will soon announce their timely drop And as the colour’d vista fades Encroaching brambles yield their crop The river dances gently by Transparent waters twist and turn As ducks sail pass with majesty In regimental line astern The birdsong in the woods so sweet And high above the trees are rooks Their raucous voices now compete Their claws like jagged hooks The morning chill hangs all around The year grows older now Russet leaves bedeck the ground Fruit has fallen from the bough The harvest safely gathered in Rewards their efforts, stored away Late autumn skies grow dull and dim As night creeps up upon the day Celebrate these joys of autumn Its time, its balance, its measure Embrace the fullness of all its charm For these are moments that you will treasure John Howlett Keynsham Creative Writers welcome new members – call George Liddell on 0117 914 8654.

SNIPPETS Scenes from Keynsham life Mr H, headmaster, was versatile. He served lunches, taught Art and PE – we were learning to play baseball. Nobody could hit the tennis ball with the foam-covered stick, so we switched to cricket bats and started running the bases. “When the opposition has the ball, and you’re on a base, stay there,’ Mr H told us. “No matter how fast you are, you can’t outrun the ball.” The class sportsman disagreed. So Mr H, also a sportsman, offered a good head-start and let him try. We watched as our Blond Bolide bolted for the field horizon, even as the ball hurtled ahead of him. A brave conviction, though. CHIT CHAT CRAFTS

A net full of poppies will be draped from the church in Marksbury

Crafters’ poppy tribute AFTER Covid, Marksbury Village Hall was not getting much use and people needed to start getting out into the community a bit more. I was approached to set up craft sessions in the village to teach people new skills and provide a friendly place to go each week. Two years on and we are going from strength to strength, with a chatty group partaking in a wide range of crafts, including macrame, crochet, knitting, jewellery-making, beadwork, paper beads, card-making and wreath-making and much more. You name it and we will give it a go, or find someone to help us. As well as Marksbury residents, we have like-minded people from Keynsham, Timsbury, Farmborough, Tunley etc, so if you don’t drive we may be able to arrange lift-sharing. The group recently held their first craft fair in the village hall, with many members selling beautiful handmade items. It was a really lovely event, with a wide range of items suitable for Christmas, birthdays or personal treats. KEYNSHAM SCOUTS

We’re cooking up lots of adventures!

A visit to Waitrose helped Avon Troop complete their Chef Activity Badge. And there’s been plenty of fun outdoors, too

THANK you so much to the community for supporting our annual Scout auction, book sale and toy sale. We raised more than £6,000, which will greatly aid our Scouting activities and exceeded our target. Hundreds of people packed the Scout HQ, and the fun atmosphere and lively bidding created a wonderful day out. The book room was a place to find some real bargains, while the toy room was a must for the young people. Next year’s date for your diaries is Saturday October 5. n Our Avon Troop have been completing elements of their Chef Activity Badge. In the first week, they planned a weekend menu and the following week they visited Waitrose, where managers Alice and Sheila gave a tour and provided a fun way to learn about safe ways to store and transport food. The Scouts were taken back of house in the cafe, where everyone got into disposable whites and hats and Alice showed them where food is prepared for customers, explained how they keep different types of food separate, safe temperatures for storing food and how they monitor these. Some of the Scouts went behind the counter while others played the customers, ordering food from the menu. The Scouts then went into the delivery van, where they were shown how the staff store and transport the different types of shopping. For the final week of this badge, the Scouts prepared a two-course meal as per their menu, plus washing and clearing up. Undertaking this badge encouraged the Scouts to work as a team,

to plan what they were going to make, cook it and clear up in order for them to earn the badge. Some comments from the Scouts: Henry said it was very good and very fun. Patrick said it was fun. Achilles said it was interesting and he learnt a lot. Charlotte and Jessica said they loved playing with the till. Emily loved ‘placing her order’ at the cafe and being served by Charlotte and Jessica! What was the worst part? The washing up! n Our winter clay pigeon fundraising shoot takes place at our Chelwood campsite on Saturday and Sunday November 25 and 26, a perfect opportunity for groups or individuals to have some fun. Advance booking is required. Visit www.1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk or you can email

claypigeon@1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk for more details. n Who do you know that is over 18 years old; likes outdoors and adventurous activities; is probably a very busy person; and likes to find time to have fun? They are the type of adults we seek. Our activity teams wish to grow, which is why we are seeking volunteers to make activities happen – who can you point our way for a chat? Ask them to email scouts@1stkeynshamscouts. org.uk or text 07714237525. Scouting in Keynsham is hugely successful, with massive waiting lists for young people wishing to take part. We know everyone is often so busy they cannot spare much time, but as a team we can achieve lots. Voice readers, please help us to grow our team.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

Exiles Jane Harper From author of ‘The Dry’ and ‘Force of Nature’ comes this excellent crime thriller, in which Aaron Falk, a cop from Melbourne’s Financial Crime Unit, tries to expose the secrets of a small community. During a food and wine festival at Maralee town, a mother goes missing, leaving her baby in a pram. A year later, Kim’s disappearance continues to haunt her family and friends, as tourists gather again for the festival. Aaron returns to attend a re-scheduled christening and as he looks into the case, long-held secrets and resentments begin to surface. Jane Harper captures the social dynamics of a small community really well. I like the setting in Australia, and the story is rich in mystery. A real page turner.

I Let You Go Clare Mackintosh Clare MacKintosh drew on her experiences working for Oxford CID to write this gripping novel. An only child is killed on a dark, wet November afternoon in a hitand-run accident. DI Ray Stevens and his CID colleagues have been trying to find the driver when the order comes to drop the case. The mother cannot be found, and the police assume she has left

after the devastation of losing her child. Despite the small amount of evidence, they feel duty bound to catch the culprit. Meanwhile, Jenna is living in anonymity in a remote area of Wales. Although reluctant to make friends with the local people, after a while she relaxes into the seasonal life of a small seaside resort, distracting herself from the pain of her past by starting an online business, selling photographic art. The story takes you from the frustrated CID staff and the impact the case has on their professional and private lives, to Jenna and her efforts to rebuild her life after tragedy. An absorbing read.

Adult Non-Fiction

The Hidden Life of Trees Peter Wohlleben reviewed by Alice Hack, Bath Library If you have ever been curious about the science of trees and how they develop over hundreds of years, then this is the perfect book for you. Each chapter dives into the make-up behind each tree, such as how the roots absorb water and keep the structure healthy, as well as their role in the climate change crisis. The final line on the blurb states that ‘A walk in the woods will never be the same again’ and that has been the case with me since reading it. Young Adult Fiction

Girl, Missing Sophie McKenzie reviewed by Alice Hack, Bath Library In the first book in the awardwinning Missing series, the story

follows a young girl from London, called Lauren, who was adopted early on in her life, but now as a teenager, she would love to know her ancestral background. When browsing the internet, she comes across a shocking secret – she may have been kidnapped as a baby and given away. Lauren’s courage and determination to seek out all of the answers to her questions makes this a real page turner. Every time I thought scenarios would be resolved, all of a sudden, a plot twist would leap out and change everything. Suitable for readers aged 14-plus.

Children’s Fiction

Stubby: A true story of friendship Michael Foreman This is a delightful story to read, particularly around Remembrance Day. A young soldier begins his training and while he has his lunch, a little dog, with a flat face and short legs, cannot help but follow him around. Then

one day the troops are sent off to the battlefield – and Stubby joins them. He is their mascot and everyone loves having him around. He is brave, and the local town make him a smart army jacket with his name stitched on. Find out about his adventures. The story is based on a real-life Stubby who was owned by a Corporal Conroy of the USA army in 1917.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The stories in scripture show time and time again that God offers people a new beginning, Revd Nigel Williams another chance Rector of Saltford, Corston and for great things Newton St Loe

N

EW beginnings do not just happen at the beginning of a new year. They can occur with a romantic break-up, a move to a new city, a new job, a new child, or another life event. What new beginning am I experiencing now? How am I feeling at this point? I sit for a while with that feeling, having just moved house and post to be the new rector here in Saltford, Corston and Newton St Loe, and I was reminded of this: “Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands.” (Isaiah 43:18-19)

The stories in scripture show time and time again that God offers people a new beginning, another chance for great things. God frees the oppressed, Jesus heals and restores, and the Holy Spirit imbues new life. So, I wonder what might be the new start in your life at this time? For my family and I, it’s the move. For the church at the end of the month we begin to look at Advent, which is the start of the church’s new year, so what is your new start at this time? Why not join the church in this process of looking forward to something new over the Advent season, and maybe ask God to show you the new things in life to move towards.

KEYNSHAM station as it used to be. This photograph is undated but shows a local train to Bath, probably in the late 1950s. It was in 1959 that the steam trains were replaced by diesel units, a huge investment with many more services, made in the hope that the decline in passenger numbers could be reversed. The upgrade was a failure and services were then reduced until by 1970 there were only five stopping trains a day in each direction.

Molly & Co make such a difference for Mencap Molly Hale, right, and Laura Jefferies at the Make a Difference Awards ceremony KEYNSHAM Mencap volunteer Molly Hale has been recognised in the BBC Radio Bristol Make a Difference Awards. She was shortlisted from hundreds of nominations to the final four for fundraiser of the year, for her support for the society and other local community groups. To raise money for Keynsham Mencap, Molly has organised fetes, fun days and tabletop sales. She has abseiled down a church, taken part in a 5k inflatable obstacle course, and organised Keynsham Mencap’s recent quiz. And she’s already planning her next event for early 2024. To celebrate her being shortlisted, Molly and guests were invited to the awards ceremony on Weston-super-Mare pier. Molly’s category was judged by Hollywood actor Kelsey Grammer, star of TV sitcoms Cheers and Frasier. Sadly, Molly didn’t win her category, but Keynsham Mencap is forever grateful for all her fundraising efforts. Molly’s quiz for Keynsham Mencap was a huge success. The event at the Riverside Inn, Salford, involved 16 teams and raised almost £600. There was a mixture of rounds and trivia, from ‘famous duos’ to famous movie quotes, and the ‘all or nothing’ round at the end. A huge thank-you to Molly for

On Sunday October 15, members of team KDMS completed the Bath Half Marathon. Jemima, George and Katie took on the 13.1-mile course, and more than £1,600 was raised - an amazing achievement. Keynsham Mencap is a self-funded charity and relies on the fundraising efforts of the

community. If you would like to raise money for the society and have ideas of how to do so, please email fundraiser Clare Anderson at clare@keynshammencap.org.uk Come and see Keynsham Mencap at the Winter Festival on Friday November 24, where it will hold two tombolas in Keynsham Leisure Centre. There are enough teddies for the teddy tombola. Do you have a bottle or a gift you could give to help raise money? Please bring bottles and new gifts to 44 Bath Hill or email clare@ keynshammencap.org.uk

Up, up and away ... Sam sends an axe flying on its way to hitting the target from 16 metres at Avon Valley Farm in Keynsham

Sam kicks his way to a world record

SAM Pollock has won a place in the Guinness World Records book thanks to his skills at kicking an axe. The former Broadlands Academy pupil achieved the accolade by propelling an axe 14.2 metres into a target. And having seen his name in print in the latest edition, Sam, aged 27, has already broken his own record! Sam – aka Knifey Sam – developed axekicking as a hobby through his job based at Avon Valley Farm in Keynsham. He joined UK Outdoor Active, teaching activities such as paddle-boarding, archery and air-rifle shooting – “but I really took a shine to the throwing sports of axes and knives.” Sam explained: “I used to watch videos on of people doing trick shots on Instagram and I saw this guy balance an axe on his foot and kick it into the target - and I was like yeah I want to do that.” He began going to Avon Valley Farm on his days off to record his own trick shots, gradually increasing the distance and number of rotations he could achieve. Sam went on to win a prize in a competition run by AceJet, who make throwing axes and knives, finishing run-up in the category for creative axe-throwing videos. Then he decided to try to get into the Guinness Worlds Record book, which he has been collecting since childhood, even owning an edition from 1996, the year of his birth.

Sam Pollock with his certificate for his 2021 axe-kicking world record. Below, his entry in the Guinness World Records book

First he had to apply for axe-kicking to be a new category, which was approved. Then, in 2021, he decided to make the attempt at Avon Valley Farm because he knows the location so well. But the pressure of meeting the strict guidelines put him off his stride at first. “It just took so long. It was a hot day. I was kicking axes for ages. I was getting tired. But

eventually I got it. It was a massive relief.” He had to film his attempt from various angles, and witnesses had to sign documentation. All the evidence was sent off to Guinness, who eventually confirmed the record and issued Sam with a certificate. Sam had just missed the deadline for being included in the 2022 book but hoped to appear in the 2023 edition. But he was gutted to discover he had missed out on that edition, too, probably because of the high number of records that are set every year. Undeterred, Sam decided to break his own record, which he did once again at Avon Valley Farm this summer, hitting the target from 16 metres and achieving six rotations. The icing on the cake came when he recently bought the new 2024 Guinness World Records book and saw the entry for his 2021 record. So what qualities does Sam consider are needed to be a successful axe-kicker? “A pair of working legs and a good teacher!” he said. “I have successfully managed to teach about 150 people over the years to kick an axe into a target. I’ve had loads of customers that have surprised me by doing it, so I don’t actually think being good at things like football makes too much of a difference. Sam is still waiting for his new record to be officially verified, but he is already thinking of setting new records, believing he can reach a distance of 20 metres.

BRISTOL EMPIRE DRAGONS

Race adventure for dragon boat girls BRISTOL Empire Dragons attended the National Dragon Boat Championships in Nottingham for a full weekend of racing. Our Saltford-based club were really competitive with rival crews, around 28 in total. As a crew that were mostly new to dragon boat race events, we gave them all some close racing and many were surprised how well we performed. We and our coach received lots of praise from the organisers and other clubs. One of the highlights was the under-18 race category, which had not been run for quite a few years and gave four of our juniors the opportunity to compete. There were 55 young people from clubs around the country divided into three boats, who raced against each other in a three-heat race. Considering their ages of seven to 17, they were amazing and showed potential to be great paddlers in the future. I even had the honour to present them with medals for their efforts. Sophia was in the first-place boat, while Jasmine, Sophina and Arcadia were in the third-place

boat. Well done to these young ladies, who didn’t expect to race but jumped at the chance. We are also lucky to have the GB under-18 and under-24 coach within our club, giving the perfect opportunity to any young people who fancy competing internationally – you can still be trained to this standard from

scratch to compete next summer. We are looking to build our membership in several ways. We have adult members up to age 80 (so never too old) and under-18s from around nine years old. We have also just introduced a breast cancer survivor team, as it is proven to be an ideal sport to help with medication and recovery.

Membership is only £15 per month. If you would like to give this sport a try, please get in touch - we would love to meet you. We are a friendly and inclusive group of mixed abilities. Our training takes place at Saltford Rowing Centre on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Please call Tina on 07720 353701. Tina Curtis

KEYNSHAM Walking Football has bought four sets of goals (12ft by 6ft) with the help of a grant from the Football Foundation. The club plays at the AJN Stadium (home of Keynsham Town Football Club) and have used five-a-side goals for many years. However, the 12ft by 6ft goals have become standard now for walking football and are used

in both the Somerset and Gloucester County Walking Football Leagues. In these leagues, we have entered a total of seven teams this season, in the over 50s, 60s and 70s categories. So it helps to use the same standard for practice and competition. The club has more than 150 members, who play on Tuesdays (10am to 11am) for over 65s,

and Thursdays (8pm to 9pm) and Fridays (10am to 11am) for over 50s. The club uses a ‘turn up and play’ policy, where the first session is free, but for further details please mail keynshamtownwf@gmail.com. Apart from playing, the club has an active social side and has raised more than £30,000 for good causes since it was formed.

CAMERTON AND PEASEDOWN CROQUET CLUB

Linda and Dave retain open doubles crown PLAYERS from as far as Wales joined others from local clubs to compete in Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club’s open doubles tournament. As usual, the standard of play was very high and most games were won by one or two hoops, with many 7-6 results. The clear winners were Linda Shaw and Dave Kibble, who retained the title - their third win in the eight years of the tournament. The trophy was presented by club chair Fran Ralli, and this was followed by tea and cakes. Tournament organiser Mo Boys assured everyone that the event will return in 2024 and will include

new faces from the wider croquet world. During the year, members took part in a series of tournaments with categories for all players, from beginner to expert. These culminated in a fantastic finals day, when spectators watched a series of hard-fought games, with hoops scored or opponents’ balls hit away from a long distance. Club chair Fran Ralli presented trophies to doubles winners Mo Boys and Tony Brooks (GC Level play) and Colin Britt and Simon Dunk (GC Handicap) and singles trophies to David Milford (AC Handicap), Julie Lewis (High

Handicap), Simon Dunk (AC Short Croquet), Phil Hendy (GC Handicap) and Colin Britt (Level singles). The day ended with a barbecue, including puddings and cake. The club plays croquet throughout the year, so if you are looking for a new outdoor sport

– one that’s competitive, sociable and good for your health, where men and women play on equal terms and age is no barrier – then visit our web site at https://www. camertonpeasedowncroquet.co.uk/ or phone Fran Ralli on 07900 836443.

WHEN I wrote the Keynsham Bowling Club report last month and commented on the season’s results, I omitted to mention our ladies, and for that I had my knuckles rapped, and rightly so. Allow me to rectify that. They finished top of the North Somerset League, winning 10 out of their 14 matches, second in the Mendip League and third in the County League. They also had a great run in the Southey Cup, losing in the semifinal to a very experienced Ilminster side in a game played on a neutral green at Weston-super-Mare. A good all-round performance throughout the season by Keynsham Ladies. One of the last fixtures played each season is the annual match between the ladies and the gents. Both teams fielded 24 players and the event showed our green in Keynsham Memorial Park at its best, with six rinks packed with 48 members all wearing the new club

shirts, as our photograph shows. On this occasion, victory went to the men. At the club, we have a hardworking group of folk who plant out our troughs and baskets each year and then water and maintain them throughout the summer to give the wonderful display of colour that surrounds our green. Two of that group, Margaret Bevan and Mo Dickinson, recently attended the Keynsham In Bloom awards evening and received a much-deserved silver certificate. We now look forward to the programme of social events during the winter shutdown. Bingo, quiz, beetle drive, Christmas party, race evening, Italian evening, a carol and mince pie morning, and monthly coffee mornings are just some of the events to look forward to, plus our annual presentation lunch, when the winners of our club competitions will receive their trophies.
