Giuseppe warms up for TV's Bake Off

A SALTFORD engineer is set to become a household name as one of the contestants on The Great British Bake Off. Giuseppe Dell’Anno’s cakes, dough and pastry will be scrutinised by the judges and millions of fans of the Channel 4 show, which screened the first episode of its 12th series on September 21. Channel 4 unveiled Giuseppe as one of the 12 contestants before the show started. Originally from Italy, he now lives locally with his wife and their three young sons. A spokesperson said: “His love for baking comes from his father, a professional chef who did all the cooking at home as Giuseppe was growing up, including making a cake every Sunday. “Inspired by this Italian heritage, Turn to Page 3

KEYNSHAM Kindness Festival has been launched to celebrate acts of generosity big and small in the town. The event was set to run from Tuesday September 28 to Saturday October 2. Organiser Stefan Edwards, pictured, who many will remember used to run the Temple Street Canteen, told the Voice: “This festival brings together some of the many groups within the community who share their skills and thoughtfulness with others. “From the generous exchange of seeds, workshops sharing communication or painting skills, to opportunities to walk and observe the beautiful place we live in, the festival has many opportunities to celebrate acts of kindness. “We’ve got some very special musicians playing in St John’s Church, and music around a camp fire in the beautiful

Sanctuary Garden on Dapps Hill, as well as spoken word and storytelling, or the opportunity to play the ukulele. “We have events for children to play with toys, to try maths club, and for families to learn more about the FOOD Club.” Most of the 16 scheduled events are free. Eco festival is a success THE Eco Festival in Keynsham has been hailed a big success. The event, held over the weekend of September 17 and 18, was organised by Churches Together in Keynsham and Saltford, in conjunction with Keynsham Town Council. Clarice Corfield, chair of the organising committee, thanked all those who attended. She said: “The festival was a great success. The Space was full on Friday evening to hear the guest speakers, who then answered questions put to them

by the public. The Market Walk was busy on the Saturday, with the public interacting well with the stall holders. “It was an excellent event for our community, highlighting very important, crucial issues for us and for the whole world. “On Sunday there was a very challenging service at the Victoria Methodist Church arranged by the Eco Group and led by Jane, the minister.” l We will publish more details about the outcome of the festival in our next issue.

Giuseppe joins the TV Bake Off gang From Page 1 Giuseppe loves using Italian flavours in his bakes, while he also brings his engineer’s precision to the results. “A self-confessed food snob, he is determined to feed his children home-made confectionery, rather than anything that’s been massproduced. “When he’s not baking, Giuseppe loves indulging his passion for design and architecture, and with his wife has renovated their family home. He also loves gardening.” Giuseppe said he was “ecstatic to be part of the Bake Off family”, adding: “This year’s gang is truly magnificent!” Among his supporters is Saltford Parish Council, which has wished him well via Twitter. The council tweeted: “Good luck and best wishes to Saltford’s @BritishBakeOff contestant!” It added: “Hoping to see some Saltford scenes in future episodes!” Giuseppe has spent eight years working at the Bristol and Bath Science Park. He rose to the role of chief engineer at the National Composites Centre in Emersons Green after joining in 2013. His workplace has hailed his appearance on the show, which attracted up to 11.5 million viewers during its 2020 series. A message on the National Composites Centre’s social media channels said: “So excited to be able to announce that our very own Giuseppe Dell’Anno is a contestant on this year’s Great British Bake Off. Ready. Steady, bake!” The centre tagged its announcement #teamGiuseppe. Giuseppe’s LinkedIn profile revealed that he joined the National Composites Centre as a research engineer and took on a management role before becoming chief engineer in 2017. He was an industrial fellow at Bristol University between 2019 and July this year. All episodes of The Great British Bake Off, which is showing on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4, have been prefilmed – but the final result is a closely-guarded secret, which will be revealed in the final show in November.

Campaigners: Help us stop biogas plant CAMPAIGNERS fighting plans for a food waste processing plant on the outskirts of Keynsham are seeking more financial support from the public. Protect Our Keynsham Environment (POKE) is opposing the scheme at the former Queen Charlton Quarry in Charlton Field Lane. Bath & North East Somerset Council is due to make a decision on the planning application soon. Resourceful Energy Anaerobic Ltd (REAL) wants to build an anaerobic digester plant capable of processing 92,000 tonnes of foodstock a year at the site. POKE has warned that the scheme will permanently alter the green-belt landscape, create noise and smell and potentially harm residents’ health. REAL, which hopes to complete construction by next summer, says the plant would produce green gas and electricity for the local energy network from food waste and renewable energy crops. But POKE said most of the foodstock brought in would not be from the local area, and the further it travels the less sustainable it becomes. POKE estimated that at peak times HGVs could be coming and going every four minutes, and claimed the access would be unsafe.

Kerry Morgan says the power plant proposals are a case of greenwashing The campaign group now says it needs to employ more professional help as it tries to persuade B&NES that the power plant is an ill-conceived development in the green belt, and that rather than being environmentally friendly, it will damage Keynsham and the wider area. POKE spokeswoman Kerry Morgan said: “We need to say no to this proposed industrial power plant pretending to be

green, which we believe will not reduce our carbon footprint at a time of climate emergency. We also need to say no to more air, noise and traffic pollution and prevent road gridlock. “With this massive power plant being just upwind of Keynsham, we also need to say no to the stink that will force us to live indoors.” On the opening day of The Great Big Green Week in Keynsham, Kerry dressed as a washing machine to highlight why POKE believes the power plant proposals are a case of greenwashing. She said that with a decision on the plans imminent, POKE urgently needs more resources to step up its fight. “Further funds are needed by POKE to finance the professional help necessary to defeat this hugely damaging industrialsized power plant that will impact on every Keynsham area home. “People in and around Keynsham have already given POKE tremendous support. I ask them to please dig into their pockets once again during these final stages of this important fight to protect our community and local environment.” To find out more about POKE’s campaign, visit www.protectourkeynshamenvironment. wordpress.com

Traffic concern highlighted in survey CONCERNS about the volume of traffic travelling through Saltford have been highlighted in response to a survey on the Bristol to Bath Corridor project. Saltford Parish Council has called attention to the “limited traffic capacity” of the A4 from the Globe roundabout to Saltford and then through Saltford to the Broadmead roundabout. Its response states: “This single carriageway section of the A4 reaches capacity during rush hour. “We consider that the congestion along this section of the A4 will also worsen as a result of the large number of commercial and housing developments completed and planned.” The council says this section of the A4 is narrow and has not been effectively widened for decades. “Congestion on this section of road represents a serious nuisance to residents of air and noise pollution, and also highway safety issues in respect of congestion.” Its comments are in response to a survey by the West of England Combined Authority to help shape transport improvements between Bath and Bristol. The survey, which has now closed, sought to hear about the issues people are facing as

well as ideas on how to provide better bus, cycling and walking options. In its response, Saltford Parish Council says: “This section of the A4 appears to have become noticeably more congested over recent months. “Of particular concern in respect of pollution and congestion is the apparent increasing number of heavy goods vehicles travelling through Saltford. Investigation needs to be undertaken by Bath and North East Somerset Council to confirm if these heavy goods vehicles are now rerouting through Saltford to avoid the charges introduced for the Clean Air Zone in Bath.” The council adds: “Given the existing restriction of capacity and road size of the A4 through Saltford, no plan to improve mass transit along this strategic important

transport corridor should be considered without effective strategic plans to remove some of the traffic volume from the A4 by using alternative existing transport corridors between the two cities.” It believes the railway could play a significant role in easing congestion, especially if Saltford’s railway station is reopened. “Additionally, there is the Bath-Bristol railway path. Originally this railway line had two tracks and has the width for possible additional development.” The council says the metro bus service must provide an “affordable, reliable, regular, quick and green service” and enough passenger capacity to avoid overcrowding, especially with ongoing concerns about Covid-19.   It says the service should resolve any zone or fare anomalies, pointing out that Saltford has been placed in the outer zones of both cities, meaning residents are charged on a higher fare banding whichever direction they travel.  The Bristol to Bath Corridor project is led by the West of England Combined Authority and delivered in partnership with Bath & North East Somerset Council and Bristol City Council.

n NEWS A KEYNSHAM man in rehab from a very rare form of cancer is taking on Mount Snowdon to thank the charity that has helped him. James Lovell, 40, father of two and head of water recycling with Wessex Water, was diagnosed in June 2020 with primary mediastinal lymphoma, a form of cancer which usually only affects women aged 35 or more, but for which – if caught early enough – there is a good prognosis. James has now been given the all-clear after a successful course of treatment at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. As part of his physical recovery, he is taking on Snowdon with a small group of family and friends as part of STOMP - Penny Brohn UK’s annual sponsored walk – which takes place this year on Saturday October 2 along any route the participants choose. Walkers in the Bristol area may join the Covid-safe eightmile group walk, starting from the charity’s national centre in Pill, or they can take part anywhere they choose, even from home, by completing the distance wherever suits them on the same day. Registration can be made online at www.pennybrohn. org.uk/event/stomp or further

Cancer survivor to 'stomp' Snowdon

James Lovell, pictured with his family, says it is thanks to Penny Brohn UK that he knows how to look after himself details are available from emma. gilmore@pennybrohn.org.uk . James said: “I would carve up the impact of cancer on you as a person as 30% impact on your body and 70% impact on your mind. It’s just something you cannot block out. You carry the ‘what-ifs, buts and maybes’ with you during treatment and

beyond, which can be a real challenge. “That's where Penny Brohn UK came in, because it’s thanks to them that I know how to look after myself now. So I’m tackling Snowdon as part of their annual STOMP, and I’m really keen to spread the word about the great work they do.”

Chemotherapy was “tough but manageable” for James. When he felt unwell, it made him think the treatment was working, but he found the mental challenge far greater. James said: “It was just after my second round of chemo that I got in touch with Penny Brohn UK. From then on, I met with Janey twice a week for relaxation and mindfulness sessions. I also met with nutritionist Nicky, who helped overhaul my diet, and physical therapist Alisa, who helped me maintain my physical fitness during treatment. “This brilliant charity is an incredible line of support; an amazing group of people who dedicate their lives to people with cancer. “I feel like my relationship with Penny Brohn UK has only just begun. I want to thank them for everything they have done and continue to do for me. “I’m determined to give back to the charity, to help ensure other people like me can access their services and get the support they vitally need.” James has shared his full story on Penny Brohn UK’s website and is hoping it will inspire more people to get involved with STOMP. To read his story, go to www. pennybrohn.org.uk and search for ‘James Lovell’.

n LETTERS Transport problems won't Inspirational eco festival be solved by electric cars shows MP is out of touch Letters for publication can be sent to news@keynshamvoice.co.uk or by post to Letters, Keynshamvoice, 16 Ashmead Business Centre, Ashmead Road, Keynsham, BS31 1SX. The editor reserves the right to edit your letter.

I WAS disappointed to read Jacob Rees-Mogg MP’s simplistic comments on the draft transport plan for Bath and North East Somerset in the September issue of Keynsham Voice. He is completely out of touch if he thinks that electric cars are the solution to all our transport problems. As the number of cars increases, so will the congestion and parking issues which are already awful. He also fails to consider those who need to get around but do not have a car. This may be because they cannot afford one, particularly the expensive electric models, or do not drive because of age, disability or a simply lack of inclination. As we know, bus services are declining even in urban areas,

and many rural villages are effectively cut off to non-drivers. I was amused to see ReesMogg refer to the current administration as hairshirt Adullamites. For me, Adullamites will always be the group identified in Cornford’s classic political satire Microcosmographia Academica. Here they are the ones who are “dangerous because they know what they want, that is all the money that is going. They say to one another, ‘If you scratch my back, I will scratch yours.’” Given the recent scandals of undue influence on ministers from bankers and property developers, that sounds more like the Conservatives than the Liberal Democrats. Nigel Long Courtenay Road, Keynsham

The Community Eco Festival staged by Churches Together Keynsham and Saltford with support from Keynsham Town Council was a truly wonderful and life-enhancing experience. The inspiring optimism, commitment and positivity all around differed in every respect from the characteristically haughty disdain displayed in Jacob ReesMogg's column of transport matters in the Voice’s September edition. His views were so extreme as to put him at odds even with the publicly stated views of the Prime Minister and Transport Secretary Grant Shapps. There was not a hair shirt nor an Adullamite to be seen, as hundreds - perhaps thousands - of concerned residents and citizens came together at various events to explore ways to do their bit in

the face of the climate emergency, seeking ways to protect their families, their neighbours and our shared natural home. It was an example that showed off our communities at their very best. The contrast to the NeoPromethean views expressed by Mr Rees-Mogg with his message to travel as much as ever, to buy an electric car and put blind faith in technologies yet to be invented, could not have been starker. As ever, he seems quaintly disconnected from the people he purports to represent at Westminster. ON THE BEAT

Pavements are for people, not parking!

W

ithin the policing world, the staff changes come thick and fast, and this month we see the arrival of our new police sergeant, Stuart Cumine, who takes over from Jon Bagnowiec. Jon has been promoted to the rank of inspector - we wish him well in his new role in Somerset. Stuart will be an exciting addition to the team and will no doubt want to bring his own style to neighbourhood policing. n As the schools return, the same problems seem to rear their heads. We have always had issues with parking around local schools. The roads around our two large senior schools and several primary and infant schools get heavily congested at the start and end of the school day. This causes a safety issue for us all. We will be more visible around these times, and repeat offenders who block driveways, park on pavements or double-yellow lines, or cause a general obstruction, will be challenged and are likely

with PC James Evans

to incur a penalty notice for any offences. The road networks around schools are designed for the safety of children and the parents and carers who take them to school. Every time a pavement is blocked or a view obstructed, it puts people at risk of an accident. No one wants to be held accountable for a child being injured. Remember that pavements are for people, not cars, and if you can’t park on the side of the road and leave enough room for other road users, you should not be parked there.

• Trusted reputation • Huge choice of doors, worktops appliances, sinks & taps • Free planning & design service

Only electric scooters like this, available for hire, conform to the regulations n We are still having problems with electric scooters and bikes. The law is quite clear, whether you agree with it or not - scooters and bikes that are not pedal-assisted

are not allowed. The only ones that conform to the regulations are the scooters you can hire. This is because they are registered and are insured to cover the third-party risk. At this time, no insurance companies offer insurance for privately bought ones as they do not conform to the regulations. We have the power to seize these bikes and scooters and deal with the rider, not only for the lack of insurance but for other offences such as drink-driving and driving while disqualified. If we see these being used, we will be taking some sort of action. n Last month we actioned a positive drugs warrant where officers seized class A and class B drugs and arrested the occupants. The investigation is ongoing, but we were successful in removing drugs that would have got on to our streets. n As a neighbourhood policing team, we are hoping to become more visible, so if you see any of us out and about, please stop for a chat.

Wellsway pupil Kaishu Flukes in action

TWO brothers have excelled at the national BMX bike championships. Kaishu Flukes, 13, who goes to Wellsway School in Keynsham, won the 2021 Cruiser BMX British title for his age group at the British Championship in Leicester. He also came sixth in the 20” category. His brother Senshu, 10, came sixth in his category. Kaishu took up racing when he was eight, inspired by his parents, who were both keen racers when they were younger. Dad Jamie, a family liaison officer for Bath & North East Somerset Council, began taking Senshu out when he was just five. He is currently in his final year at Beacon Rise primary school. Both boys have honed their skills on the Longwell Green BMX Pump track, which reopened in June following refurbishment and resurfacing work by Oldland Parish Council. They now train with Bath BMX in Odd Down, as well as Bristol BMX on Wednesday evenings. Mum Yoshiko, head of design at The Fine Cheese Company in Bath, said she was grateful to the local community for facilities and support. She said: “It’s really great that the track in Longwell Green has been repaired. It had got very rough and we couldn’t really use it, but now it’s really good. We really appreciate the work Steve Skidmore has done to support local youngsters.” The family, who have lived in Hanham for 16 years, are planning a move to Keynsham to get more storage space for the 10 bikes they have between them.

The last two world championships, planned in America and the Netherlands, were cancelled because of Covid restrictions. Councillor Steve Skidmore, from Oldland Parish Council, said: “This is an incredible achievement. It is testament for councils investing in sporting facilities that not only meet a local need, but the need for those like Kaishu and Senshu wishing to fulfil their potential and achieve their aspirations.”

Villager Alison ter Haar tries out one of the benches

TWO new benches have been erected along the river walk between Compton Dando and Chewton Keynsham. The benches – installed following a request from a Compton Dando villager - have been funded in part by an 'S137' grant from the parish council, and in part by Compton Dando Community Association. Barend ter Haar, community association secretary, said: “We are grateful to Heather Maggs and to Gill and Martin Palmer for allowing the placement of these benches on appropriate spots along the walk, and to Hannah Maggs for organising their erection. “The bench nearer Compton Dando is without a back so that you can sit admiring the hillside looking one way, and the river Chew when looking the other way. “Otters have been spotted on this section of the river, and earlier this year it was a great spot to watch the damselflies catching the mayflies, both in full flight.”

CHANGING FOR THE BETTER

with Transition Keynsham

Here's food for thought

T

his week I’ve been thinking about the Eco Festival talks at The Space. Each talk – on how food, energy, nature and money affect (and are affected by) climate change – was interesting. But what really struck me was the connections between them. We heard that our current food system is unsustainable. It denudes ecosystems, relies on energy intensive processes and is propped up by a financial system driven by profit. This leads to our fossil fuel energy system being ‘locked in’ to unsustainable agricultural and food processing practices. The current high price for natural gas is an example. Factories can’t afford to make the nitrogen fertiliser that’s crucial for an industrial food system. The bi-product of fertiliser production is CO2 (a greenhouse gas!) which is critical in packaging and maintaining freshness in our too-long food chains. Without that, we’re seeing gaps on supermarket shelves. Nature is damaged by our

industrial food and carbon intensive energy systems, and our finance systems both prop them up and are reliant on them. But – as the speakers at the Eco Festival explained – it doesn’t have to be this way. Regenerative agriculture works with nature, isn’t reliant on energy intensive nitrogen fertilisers and pesticides, and has short food chains which require less packaging to keep food fresh. Renewable energy doesn’t produce CO2 or pollutants dangerous to health, and can even be nature positive. Solar farms in fields can host wildflower meadows with teeming biodiversity. Schemes to increase biodiversity support food pollinators and give us clean air and water, which we all need to survive and thrive. Banks can choose not to support ‘business as usual’ and instead follow the model of Triodos Bank, which only finances companies it believes add cultural value, and which benefit people and the environment. We have a good record of raising substantial sums at this event, twice having been in the top ten fundraisers. The event is open to everybody, including children and also dogs, which must be kept under control as we pass through fields where livestock are grazing. If you wish to join us, just bring your donation in a sealed envelope, which will be

collected at the beginning of the walk. We have been continuing to enjoy fortnightly walks. The walk on August 29 was led by Derek Butler and took us on a new walk up Stockwood Vale then veering off uphill to the new Bilbie housing estate, and back to Keynsham via the Meadows. A total of 25 people took part, including several walkers new to the group. The next walk on September 12 was the first time we have been able to use the Keynsham Dial-a-Ride minibus, and Terry gave up his Sunday morning to take us to Pensford. In ideal walking weather, the 16 who took part enjoyed a picturesque stroll back to Keynsham alongside the River Chew via Publow, Woollard and Compton Dando, arriving back at 12.45pm. For our latest walk on Saturday September 25, we were due to catch the 178 bus to High Littleton for a scenic walk around Greyfriars Wood.

KEYNSHAM AND SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

Colourful end to our town crier tradition Right, a painting of George Ollis by Keynsham artist Claude Gilliard

T

he Ollis family came to Keynsham in the early 18th century, probably recruited by Abraham Darby, who travelled to Europe to obtain the skills of the “melters“ and “batterymen” for the expanding brass industry in this area. The family grew and the distinctive surname is well-known locally. A member of one branch of the Ollis family was George Nicholas, born in 1881, who filled the role of town crier for 31 years from 1907. The tradition of town criers goes back many centuries, when they provided the main means of communication to townsfolk. They carried a handbell to attract people's attention, as they shouted the words "Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!" before making their announcements. The word "Oyez" means "hear ye," which is a call for silence and attention. As, at times,

Left, George Ollis leads the Keynsham Town band and a procession up Albert Road this is believed to be the 1935 Silver Jubilee Thanksgiving procession, in which 950 people took part their messages conveyed bad news (such as tax increases), they were protected by law, giving us the phrase “don’t shoot the messenger”. Over the years the role became more ceremonial and even competitive. George Ollis was very successful in representing Keynsham and won competitions on a number of occasions. In 1926 he won a special prize for best-dressed crier in the National Town Criers’ competition held at Pewsey. His costume was green, with knee breeches, buckled shoes, a three-cornered hat and powdered wig and presumably had changed little over the preceding two hundred years. Being town crier was far from a full-time role, and he worked for the Great Western Railway for many years; his success as town crier was reported in their in-house magazine in November 1926. Local authority arrangements in

the area were changed in 1938 and George Ollis resigned when the Urban District Council was formed; although the new administration asked him to continue his services, he felt unable to do so. The council allowed him to retain his clothes of office, but stated that he must return his bell to the council. He died on 17 June 1951, aged 70.

New season of talks Later this month, the society will be holding the first of a full series

of monthly talks on a variety of local history topics, including the Suffragette Movement in the area and the Bristol Riots. While we are pleased to be back holding live events, it is disappointing that Covid limitations on numbers mean that we have to restrict admission to paid-up members of the society. If precautions are relaxed later, we may be able to welcome visitors again. Visit our website at keysalthist.org.uk for details of the society and our publications.

with Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society

This photograph shows a view of Keynsham High Street that is easy to recognise, although not quite so easy to date. It is most likely that it was taken in the late 1940s; certainly, it must be after the start of the Second World War, as the black-and-white stripes on the traffic islands were an aid to night driving during the blackout.

Very few photographs were taken during the war and the cars do not have blackout headlights. However, the railings around the churchyard are in place and it is generally believed that these were removed - like many others – for scrap iron as part of the war effort from 1941.

If you can help to date the picture, please contact Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society by emailing info@keysalthist.org.uk or phoning 0117 9864453. Buildings of note are Exon’s dairy on the extreme right of the picture and, behind the lorry, the Railway Tavern, which survived until 1956.

s a new academic year begins, I thought it would be worthwhile to use my column this month to give younger constituents who are heading off to university – as well as their parents – some information about student finance applications that I have recently received from the Student Loans Company (SLC). Each year, applicants are encouraged to apply early to ensure they have their student finance in place by the start of term. However, it is still possible to apply at this later stage, and the SLC will do its best to ensure all eligible students have funds in place by the beginning of the term or as close to term start as possible. This year, the amount of information and guidance available has expanded online, and SLC teams are also responding to customer enquiries on social media. It is also currently midway through a significant transformation programme, which aims to simplify the system and – working with the Department for Education – the policy and regulations that are administered. Through the Student Finance England service (SFE), SLC oversees funding for over one million English students on behalf of the UK government and works to ensure that the administration of student finance in England is in accordance with the relevant student support regulations authorised by Parliament. If there are any constituents who need assistance with their loans, please do not hesitate to contact me. I have been assured that concerns will be resolved as quickly as possible - www.jacobreesmogg.com / jacob.reesmogg.mp@parliament. uk or go to https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ student-loans-company

s the evenings are beginning to get darker, we’ve been making the most of our Chelwood campsite and exploring the great outdoors as much as we can. Chiltern Cubs recently spent a weekend under canvas and stars at the site. They played wide games and built bivouacs using sticks and ferns from the forest floor although they didn’t stay in them overnight! They also worked on their cooking skills, making their own dinner with beans in a billy can they made, as well as doing some open-fire cooking. Many of them came home tired but full of stories and memories to last a very long time. Meanwhile, our Explorer unit headed off to Mendip Activity Centre in Churchill for the weekend. As they arrived in the dark, it was quite a challenge to pitch their tents in torchlight as it was the first time they had camped in over two years. Activities involved a 13km hike over the Mendips and into Cheddar, axe throwing, air rifle shooting and frisbee golf. The Explorers cooked their own dinner on portable stoves, followed by cake and custard by the campfire. Daniel Sawyer, Keynsham Explorer Scout Leader, said: “After eighteen months of not being able to get away, it was great to take the

We're still buzzing from peat-free mission

A

s l write this article early on Sunday morning, the rain is falling and my little garden is very appreciative. Thankfully the Eco Festival on September 17 and 18 had dry weather and this encouraged a great many people to visit our Keynsham In Bloom stand. Our aim this year was to promote peat-free composting and to show the results of a trial carried out by our chairman, Jim Bernard. The overriding successful medium was wool-based and this caused much interest and discussion. To encourage little ones to work with seeds, the potting-up area using peat-free compost and toilet roll holders was a great success. Hopefully there will be many sweet peas grown in our area next year. The ‘name the bee’ competition was also very popular and the lucky winner is Lily, pictured here. Our plant sales were also well received and all funds will be used to buy more plants and seeds for Keynsham displays through out the forthcoming seasons. Work at the Pocket Park, Keynsham railway station and plant containers throughout the town, will continue in October to give colour and shape during the winter months. The wild flower meadow at Keynsham Cemetery is now ready for planting and this was due to start the week commencing September 27, 6pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday. If any of our gardeners can spare a little time to help, please contact catherinemarywoodman@gmail.com. It's a lovely area and a worthwhile investment in our wildlife. Keep well, safe and carry on gardening. Mary Woodman, KIB volunteer

n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

Bus services need more government cash MY nephew rang me last week, shocked when he heard my voice booming out across the bus he was travelling on. Confused, he had searched for his uncle among the passengers until he realised I was not there in person, but only as a recorded message thanking people for wearing masks! I want to say a big ‘thank you’ to First Bus for supporting my campaign to encourage passengers to wear masks so we can keep everyone safe – and apologies to everyone who has to put up with my voice! I believe mask-wearing continues to matter on public transport as one way of encouraging more people back onto buses, which is vital to meet our ambitious net zero targets. But currently we only have about 60% of pre-covid passenger numbers, and that’s caused a problem. The government rightly subsidised buses during the pandemic but they figured passenger numbers would quickly recover from their covid nosedive once people started venturing out more. They fixed on a number of 80% of people travelling again. So with that over-optimistic figure in mind, at the end of August the government suddenly slashed two-thirds of its support for West of England bus services! The result was to be expected: bus companies cut back routes, leaving people frustrated

and angry about being unable to get to work or study, get to hospital or go shopping. I have some pots of money – but they are limited and can only be spent once. So I am having to see if there are some routes I can help save. But without more government cash many people will, I’m afraid, be left disappointed. Government needed to take a more measured approach that would adjust the funding to help our bus services recover to properly reflect gradually-rising passenger confidence and numbers. Across parties, MPs agree with me. I was delighted that Conservative MPs Chris Skidmore and Jack Lopresti, Lib Dem Wera Hobhouse, plus all Labour’s local MPs co-signed a letter I wrote to the transport minister calling for a rethink. I’m certain that bringing decision-makers and influencers together – to work in the interests of local people – is what’s needed if we’re to solve our region’s big challenges. It’s not just about saving buses. We also need to improve our public transport. Having lived all my life here, I know the problems well. And efforts to improve things haven’t always worked. Successes like Metrobus are easily overshadowed by major projects that never got off the ground, despite lots of talk. Across our region there are infrequent bus services. Often they don’t go where you need them to. Sometimes you have to sit and take

Happy Sally sheds 11 stone SALLY is celebrating achieving her incredible 11 stone award after attending her local Slimming World group. She has dropped seven dress sizes and is feeling incredible. She said: “Losing weight has made such a big difference to my life. My health has improved, I have more energy, I’m happier and I feel more comfortable in my own skin.” She joined Slimming World in September 2019 after feeling unhappy about her size. “I tried a number of different ways to lose weight but they usually left me feeling hungry or miserable – or both, in fact. With Slimming World, it’s completely different. “My family and friends are all amazed by how much I can eat and lose weight. I still eat all my favourite meals, like curry, chilli and roast dinners. I just prepare and cook them differently now – and they taste so much better. “My goal now is to hit my target and stay there for life, which I know I can do.” Kelly, who runs the Keynsham group, says: “I’m so proud of Sally. She’s a fantastic ambassador for Slimming World, and what she’s achieved is nothing short of incredible, even more so during a pandemic.” You will find other successful members just like Sally in your local group, so don’t delay and get along to your nearest group.

A HAPPY RETIREMENT IS JUST ROUND THE CORNER

For Christians, the first calling to care for the earth came from God, who, having created the world, “saw that it was good” and commanded humanity to serve, tend, protect and care for it (Genesis 2). Just as nature heals and sustains us, we, as the human family, have a duty to take care of it. Let’s hope and pray that COP26 helps us to achieve that. In the words of Shirley Erena Murray’s beautiful hymn, our calling is to: “Touch the earth lightly, use the earth gently, nourish the life of the world in our care: gift of great wonder, ours to surrender, trust for the children tomorrow will bring.” * *©1992, Hope Publishing Company, Carol Stream, IL60188, USA

The flu vaccination team at Saltford Hall, above, and Keynsham Scout Hut, right

Flu campaign is team effort

A COMMUNITY effort by health staff and volunteers has been helping to protect people against the flu in Keynsham and Saltford. St Augustine’s Medical Practice has been holding jab clinics at the town’s Scout hut and at Saltford Hall, with around 2,000 people being vaccinated over three sessions. Practice manager Kate Parkins thanked the Scouts for hosting the clinic.

WELLSWAY PTA are delighted to be running their annual artisan craft fair on Remembrance Sunday, November 14. This year the event will be held in three separate halls with one-way systems in place. Chair of the PTA, Natasha Leeper, says: "This year will be a little different as there won't be an indoor café. But we're really excited to have some outdoor food vans with shelters. We'll also have some stalls outside." The Wellsway Artisan Craft Fair has been a popular annual event for over 25 years. With more than 70 stalls, it is a great way to shop locally, support local makers and also fund-raise for Wellsway school. Funds from the fair have recently bought equipment for students taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, paid for new musical instruments and provided a marquee for lunchtime shelter in the winter. Run entirely by volunteers,

the fair offers a diverse range of handmade products from local crafts people. There is also a great selection of local food produce such as rapeseed oil, beer, cider, jam and vegan chocolate. Why not pop over and have a look after the Remembrance Services, grab a spot of lunch and do some early Christmas shopping? The market runs from 12pm to 4pm. £1 entry for adults and 50p for children aged 12-18. If you would like to get involved or can spare some time volunteering for jobs on the day, do get in touch wellswaycraftfair@ gmail.com. We're looking forward to seeing you again! THREE ospreys were sighted around Chew Lake, five months after they were first seen earlier this year following their arrival from Africa. The birds – one of which can be seen clutching the prey that it plucked from the water – were photographed on August 27 by Voice reader William Harrison. The ospreys migrate to West Africa for the winter, covering up to 5,000 kilometres. Autumn migrations can be as short as 13 days of continuous flight. Chew Lake is an excellent refuelling stop before they take on their epic journey. Osprey numbers are slowly but surely recovering and are estimated in the UK as being at 294 pairs, with 270 in Scotland, 20 in England and four in Wales. Adult ospreys have few predators. A few are eaten by

Quick bite at the lake before epic journey crocodiles and many more are lost due to bad weather, power line collisions and gunfire attacks. Eggs are vulnerable to predators such as pine martens and goshawks. Mortality in young birds is very high. It is estimated that 60% fail to reach the breeding age of three. Ospreys can on average live to between 10 and 15 years of age. One breeding female at Loch Lowes lived to over 24 years of age. l Nature: Pages 28 & 29

Permissive paths to stay open

Uplifting tale of Dream Horse

SALTFORD Community Association’s annual footpath donation appeal to keep over 4.5km of permissive paths open for another year has been successful. It reached its £3,000 target with over a month to spare. The permissive paths – ones whose use has been allowed by the landowner – will now stay open until at least the end of October 2022. Any further footpath donations are still welcomed and will be used to help fund the following year.

THE uplifting film Dream Horse is to be screened at Saltford Community Cinema on Friday October 15. It is based on the true story of Dream Alliance, an unlikely racehorse bred by a bartender. The screening at Saltford Hall starts at 7.30pm, with drinks and ice creams available from 6.45pm. Tickets priced £5 can be bought in advance via www.tickettailor.com/events/scaevents or on the door. Audience members are encouraged to wear face masks when entering the building and moving inside, then remove them when seated.

24-hour fuel and coffee bid withdrawn PLANS for a round-the-clock petrol station and café in Saltford have been scrapped. The developer has withdrawn its application to stop selling cars at Avon Valley Garage and reinstate fuel sales as the main use. Hillside Farm Investments Ltd had hoped that the site on the A4 Bath Road could feature a cafe with hot drinks and snacks available from a drive-through service. Its plans said: “To make the business viable, the applicant wishes to extend the existing footprint by approximately 30 per cent. “Above the café, modest staff accommodation is proposed which will provide sustainable accommodation by reducing travel needs whilst also providing on-site security. “Opening 24 hours a day, the business would provide local job opportunities for up to 10 fulltime and six part-time staff.” Although the site is in the green belt, the plans said

Plans for a round-the-clock petrol station and cafe at Avon Valley Garage prompted health and safety concerns the new building footprint would significantly reduce the encroachment from a “blanket of cars”, with tree planting also proposed. The plans added: “This application supports a business model that is both sustainable

and commercially viable. The design seeks to provide a development scheme that reflects and respects the local character whilst also providing an enhanced visual impact.” But now the plans have been withdrawn following concerns

raised by Bath & North East Somerset Council officers. Its petroleum officer said living accommodation attached to filling stations was very rare and that the site has not stored petrol since 1997. The officer added: “I cannot see how the risks could be mitigated sufficiently to allow such a development under current health and safety provisions.” Meanwhile, the council’s highways team objected on the grounds that the development would not provide “safe and appropriate” access for vehicles and pedestrians. They said that, for the scheme to win approval, the developer would have to ensure that fuel tankers could get in and out of the site in all directions “without excessive manoeuvring within the highway.” Also, the ‘Welcome to Saltford’ sign would have to be repositioned to allow visibility at the exit, and a street light would have to be moved.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Tackling cybercrime and supporting victims I WAS elected as your Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) five months ago. Over this time, work has continued to gather momentum and there is much more to be done to ensure local people are receiving an efficient, effective and legitimate police service. Recently, I have been reflecting on the key successes my team and I have achieved so far and I wanted to share these with you. I have taken on the role as national lead PCC for the Economic and Cybercrime portfolio. I will be working with representatives from City of London Police to understand the challenges in identifying and bringing offenders to justice. My overall ambition is to make everyone more resistant and resilient to cybercrime and ensure nowhere is safe for criminals who

commit this crime in the UK. I have also taken on the role of the chair for the Local Criminal Justice Board and will be working in partnership with heads of organisations across the Criminal Justice Service, including Crown Prosecution Service, the courts, prisons and probation. We will also continue to work closely with colleagues from the Probation Service to develop a co-commissioned reducing reoffending service for the whole of Avon and Somerset. The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s commissioning team has been extremely successful in a number of bids to the Ministry of Justice to further support victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. The total additional investment received from the Ministry of Justice for victim

services supporting survivors of domestic and sexual abuse in Avon and Somerset is almost £1.6 million this year. Finally, we launched the search for a new chief constable for Avon and Somerset last month. The chief constable has overall responsibility for leading the force, creating a vision and setting direction and culture that builds public and organisational confidence. This will be accomplished by delivering a professional, effective and efficient police service. This is a crucial appointment. The police officers and staff in Avon and Somerset are dedicated and hard-working, and I am looking for a chief constable that can enhance their considerable efforts and skills. I want a leader who is able to inspire their workforce and

Hannah Thomson and her pioneering business, The Joy Club, are being featured in a forthcoming publication celebrating British leadership and innovation for giving members a more active and fulfilling retirement during the pandemic and beyond. She is being included in a chapter showcasing ‘Women in Leadership’ as part of the volume about royal leadership. The Joy Club is a membership website for retirees who want to try new things and meet new people. Her retirement adventures included backpacking around New Zealand solo, volunteering in Bulgaria and becoming an amazing painter! “Sadly, not everyone has the same experience of retirement. “Older people are facing an epidemic of social isolation and loneliness, with 40% of retirees feeling that the television is their main companion. Upon losing Granny Jean to dementia,

It features articles on those who have shaped British society, past and present, from Walpole to Cromwell, Churchill to Blair, the Queen and Prince Charles, to captains of industry. Hannah moved to Keynsham during lockdown to enjoy the countryside in the area (when Covid rules allowed). Food bank plea over benefit cut KEYNSHAM Foodbank is asking local people to write to their MP to help protect people in the community from hunger, as a new survey reveals the impact of a £20 a week cut from Universal Credit payments due this month. Research conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Trussell Trust finds that a fifth of people currently claiming Universal Credit – representing 1.2 million people in the UK – say they are ‘very likely’ to need to skip meals when the cut hits. Of those surveyed, 21% said they would struggle to heat their homes this winter, 11% say it’s very likely they won’t be able to afford to switch on their oven to cook food, and 900,000 say they are very likely not to have enough money to travel to work or make essential trips such as medical appointments. Keynsham Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust’s network, provided 2,208 emergency food parcels to people in Keynsham, Saltford and surrounding villages between April 2020 and March 2021. Garry Wheadon, project manager at Keynsham Foodbank, said: “This is the biggest overnight cut to social security since the Second World War. “It’ll also land right at the start of what is usually our busiest time of the year, just as the colder weather starts drawing in. “Social security should be strong enough for all of us to rely on when we need a lifeline – because, as the pandemic has shown us, life is full of things we can’t plan for. “The UK government must choose to protect people when they need support, not cut them adrift. If you agree, please write to your local MP and ask them to help keep the lifeline.” The £20-a-week increase in Universal Credit, brought in during the pandemic, was due to end on October 6. Autumn falls with a splash of colour

O

ctober is a month of great change as the temperatures get cooler and the days shorter, leaves starting to fall and fungi appearing in rotten logs in woods. Despite this, there is still a lot of interest to take in. The last of the summer visiting birds will be heading south and other birds will be heading here from the north and east. The miniature goldcrest will amazingly cross the North Sea, trebling the resident population. The populations of starlings are also greatly increased as they escape the harsher winters elsewhere. Also arriving are the winter thrushes. The redwing and fieldfares will be quickly taking advantages of the plentiful berries. Fellow-travellers are ducks and waders that locate on areas like the Somerset Levels. Teal, wigeon, gadwall, shoveler and pintail increase the numbers of ducks seen during the summer months. Also heading our way, curlews, lapwings, golden plover and snipe join the throng. These flocks can sometimes be numbered in the thousands and provide spectacular sights when they move to their roosts against a setting winter sun. Anyone wanting to hear a tawny owl or perhaps glimpse its shadowy form silhouetted against the last scrap of daylight should go

My World of Bats, an online talk by Daniel Hargreaves, takes place on Friday October 8. As dark nights approach, thoughts of Hallowe’en are on the minds of children everywhere. From witches and ghosts to pumpkins and, of course, bats, they love this scary time of year. This month’s online talk will show how much more there is to know about these amazing nocturnal mammals besides our ghoulish perception of them. Dan has been fascinated with bats since a young age and has travelled extensively, working with many different species around the world. Join us for this fascinating bat-filled evening. To book, visit our website - www.keynshamawt.org/whats-on for a stroll on a pleasant autumn evening. In October and November these ethereal birds make their presence felt. Tawny owls are the most abundant owl, found even in suburbia as well as town parks. Walking in our community woodlands and nearby fields, look out of the various types of fungi. You may see ink caps on lawns, fly agarics beneath pines and birches as well as various mushrooms on local heaths. The fly agaric is a very distinctive bright red mushroom with white spots. The larger dragonflies will have now disappeared but the common darter should still be on the wing. It can be seen almost anywhere, though its main habitat is around water. As the name suggests, the common darter is the most common of these aerial predators and can be found well into November. The males are dull to bright orange-red, especially on the upper surface of the abdomen.

The females are ochre, gradually going a duller red with age. The highlight for me and many others are the autumnal colours of so many trees. You do not need to travel to New England to see the leaf colours and shades change from green to the brighter colours of red and yellows. Visiting one of the big arboretums such as Westonbirt gives the full experience. But there are also wonderful trees in Bath Victoria Park, Leigh Woods, Bristol and High Littleton’s Greyfield Wood as well as in the local community woodlands in Keynsham. The depth of colour that develops to create these arboreal spectacles is influenced by the blend of chemical processes and weather conditions, with warmer dry days creating the deepest colours. If we get an Indian summer this year, it will lead to some wonderful colourful displays. Andrew Harrison

200 species find a home at cemetery MEMBERS of our group, supported by friends and experts in various fields, carried out a detailed survey of the wildlife in Keynsham cemetery this summer. The results of the survey form a “baseline” of species present for Keynsham in Bloom, who are currently in the process of trying to “rewild” certain areas of the cemetery, including creating a wildflower meadow to increase biodiversity. The results are pleasantly surprising, given that the grass has been regularly mowed, producing a short turf which is difficult for non-grass species to colonise. A total of nearly 200 different species of animals, plants and fungi were recorded in several different groups. Top in species richness were flowering plants, with 56 records, closely followed by moths, with 49. Most of the latter were caught in a light trap set up during the evening, with one or two also identified as caterpillars. There were two dragonfly and four butterfly species, plus 23 other insect species. Notable among these are the common carder bee, the woundwort shieldbug, and marmalade hoverfly.

A total of 18 bird species were recorded, from the diminutive wren and goldcrest, to a buzzard circling overhead. Nine mammal species were recorded, including five bat species (picked up by a remote bat detector left out from midnight to midnight). Two of these were possibly Daubenton’s bats, usually found near water, so possibly hunting over the nearby river Avon, and Leisler’s or lesser noctule bat. Counting in trees, arachnids, ferns, fungi, gastropod molluscs and lichen (including evernia - an unpolluted air indicator) added another 35 species to the records. It is worth noting that several species would have been missed, particularly grasses and other lichens, as there was no one present with sufficient expertise in these fields to identify them. Special thanks to John and Jenny Aldridge for their expert support, particularly for setting up the moth trap and identifying most of the catch, and to Claire Collings from Avon Bat Group for her work in identifying the bats. Savannah Studios make their mark in style

SHOWGIRLS, roulette, blackjack and tarot readings brought a touch of Vegas to Keynsham with the grand opening of a new tattoo parlour. Savannah Studios brought a smile to the faces of everyone there at a celebration that was truly needed after a very trying 18 months, not just for local businesses but for all. The event demonstrated the genuine feeling of community and friendship amongst the team at Savannah Studios, their cherished customers, local traders and friends. Revellers had a fabulous time

as they ‘gambled’ with customised Savannah Studios dollars, enjoyed drinks and canapés, and had a chance to see all the hard work they have put into the studio. Savannah Studios Tattoo opened its doors at the start of September, having relocated from the High Street to its new premises in up-and-coming Temple Street, located between two longstanding businesses, The Trout Tavern and Laviano’s. The new studios boast private booths and more space, including a consultation/waiting area, courtyard and a large free-standing fish tank to relax those nerves!

After opening for business back in 2014, it has grown from a one-woman band to a very talented and incredibly hardworking team of five artists, one apprentice and shop manager, covering all different styles of work. Savannah Studios pride themselves in having the best hygiene standards within the industry, ensuring 5-star customer service and that every customer feels comfortable, has an enjoyable experience, and leaves the studio feeling great with their newest addition of bodywork. Studio owner Kelly said: “It’s been a long and tiring road to

get to where we all are today, especially after Covid. “Without our wonderful customers and the support of all those around me, Savannah Studios wouldn’t be where it is today. “The last 18 months have been hard on all of us, and I am so incredibly proud of my team here at Savannah Studios to have come through it all and still smiling, and helping grow our business that we all work so hard for.” Savannah Studios is open for bookings, enquiries and vouchers at 44a Temple Street, Keynsham, BS31 1EH.

Relaxing after her adrenaline-boosting experience, Emma, who lives in Keynsham, said: “What a rush! Scaling down the side of Southmead Hospital is probably not on everyone’s bucket list, but it should be. “Knowing that we are raising vital funds for our local hospital and showing our appreciation of the hard work throughout the pandemic was a good enough reason to step over the edge. “Thank you to the patient instructors, Southmead Charity team and all our wonderful sponsors who have helped Southmead Hospital Charity raise muchneeded funds.” Adrian Brown, corporate and community manager at Southmead Hospital Charity, explained: “This is the third year that we

MEMBERS of Keynsham Mencap visited Alexandra Bowling Club as part of their scheme to try different sports. Qualified coaches Felicity and Danny Kite showed the group who arrived with two volunteers - the basics of delivering the bowls, delivering the jack and centring it on the rink. This was followed by a match in which a couple of ends were played. Felicity, who is ladies’ captain at the Bath-based club, said: “Deano scored on the first end and Jethro got the second shot. “All delivered some really good bowls but I think Jethro had the edge over the others on the second end because he got two shots which received loud

applause from the club members who were watching the game and cheering on the players. “However, Deano delivered two very good back bowls on that last end and Barry put in a couple of good blockers. “It transpired that Jethro’s grandad was a ‘legend’ at bowls and played for Knowle Bowls Club in his lifetime. Jethro has inherited his grandad’s bowls so, hopefully, he will bring them with him next time.” Susie confidently gave thanks to the coaches for their time and making the day an enjoyable one. Felicity said: “Despite any difficulties people may have, they can be overcome through a game of bowls, which goes to show it is a totally inclusive sport.”

BOOKS OF THE MONTH

with Judith Thomas from Keynsham Library Adult Fiction

The Architect’s Apprentice Elif Shafak I became aware of this book as part of the Duchess of Cornwall’s Book Club and can see how it has been so recommended. In 16th-century Istanbul we meet a young boy, Jahan, who appears to have travelled from a faraway land with a white elephant called Chota – who will be given as a gift to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. They are sent to the palace’s vast menagerie and their adventures begin. Jahan’s life within the palace walls revolves around scheming animal tamers, gypsies, courtiers and the everdemanding whims of the Sultan. He meets Princess Mihrimah and so begins a dangerous friendship. One day Chota and Jahan are ordered to join the army and face battle, and from this they see a bridge being built by the famous royal architect, Sinan. So begins another chapter in Jahan’s life as he joins Sinan as an apprentice architect. This is a magical tale and an absorbing read. The author depicts life in the Ottoman Empire really well, with great descriptions of the sights and smells of the city. I thoroughly enjoyed following Jahan’s life from the palace to the building of fabulous mosques and aqueducts, and throughout

is the ever presence of Chota, the elephant. Highly recommended.

Carrie Stephen King Stephen King is the master of horror writing and ideal for Halloween reading. He writes about smalltown America very well, with something unusual/weird always hiding underneath. This is one of his early stories and perhaps the most famous, with a couple of film adaptions as well. Carrie is not very popular at school. She lives with her pious mother and, following a traumatic incident after a PE lesson, one of her adversaries is suspended and not allowed to go to the prom. So, out of sympathy, the popular Tommy Ross is persuaded to take Carrie as his prom date. However, events take a macabre turn during the evening, and Carrie has a terrible and lethal “gift” which she exercises on the town that mocks her. A great introduction to the world of Stephen King. DVD

be going overboard in making him feel welcome, which Chris thinks may be about their nervousness around their daughter’s inter-racial relationship. However, as the weekend progresses, things start to become disturbing, and Chris learns the truth and it is not at all what he imagined. Written and directed by Jordan Peele, this is a brilliant, uncomfortable horror movie with an excellent twist. Children's Fiction

The Ghost Library

David Melling With a splendid ‘glow in the dark’ cover, the story revolves round Bo and her new spooky friends. She is quietly reading her favourite book one night when suddenly a clammy hand tries to grab the book away from her. She holds on to it tightly and is Get Out (15) whisked off to the Ghost Library. A perfect Halloween movie Here a selection of funny ghosts that starts so “normal” and hide out, borrowing books from then descends into something children as they don’t have any of altogether very different. Chris, a their own but returning them once young African-American man, visits they have read them. his white girlfriend’s family and all Can Bo help them out? Of seems pleasant. course! PEN TO PAPER

It's Just An Apology

October, 2021

NEWS Metro Mayor Dan Norris at the Esso station in Bath Road, Keynsham

I can only sympathize With those who apologize For constantly getting it wrong They are trying to impress Not me, I have to confess My apologizing days are long gone Now a heartfelt apology Is just simple psychology It's what people want to hear Saying sorry for some trivial thing The satisfaction that it may bring When of course it's not meant, I fear Sorry is the hardest word So they say, but that's quite absurd A throw away quip, without thinking People use it with ease While trying to please Sincerely said without blinking So fear not if you've told a whopper And your lies have all come a cropper Make clear your case politely Just begin by pleading forgiveness Sound convincing and not too frivolous Apologizing, not to be taken lightly John Howlett Keynsham Creative Writers always welcomes new members – call George Liddell on 0117 914 8654.

Thoughts for Autumn Autumn’s here with shorter days Enjoy the Season’s sunshine rays, Crispy leaves, a bracing breeze, Beautiful colours in the trees. Covid’s taking second place In our thoughts and in our space. However, pause, remain aware, We’re safer now, but must take care. And as our journey onward goes We’ll have our ups, we’ll have our lows. But still much to be thankful for With blessings entering every door. Sylvia Kirby

Yes, it's the new most popular question on Facebook:

Where can I get petrol? MOTORISTS from Keynsham and Saltford joined the frantic search for petrol as panic buying gripped the country. Huge queues built up at the pumps following reports of a lack of delivery drivers, with some fuel stations throughout the UK being forced to close. Local motorists took to Facebook to ask each other where petrol was available. In response to a message on the Keynsham Community Group on Sunday September 26, drivers reported they had been trying to get petrol in Saltford and Keynsham, as well as Longwell Green, Marksbury, Whitchurch and Brislington. Some would report that petrol was still on sale at a particular location, only for others to say it was no longer available a short while afterwards.

One user posted: “Currently in the queue for fuel at Arnos Vale Sainsburys. Fingers crossed they don’t run out as I get there.” Metro Mayor Dan Norris paid a visit to the scene near the Esso Rontec Chandag fuel station in Bath Road, Keynsham, on September 26, where long queues had built up. Mr Norris, who is responsible for jobs, business investment and skills, accused the government of ignoring months of warnings that a fuel crisis was looming. He said: “Over the weekend, pumps across the West of England have run dry - that risks significant impact on local businesses. “They are telling me this is the last thing they need as they try to recover from the pandemic. The government needs to up its game.”

Making a mess and having a great time! CURIOUS Babies – a musical and messy play class in Keynsham – is proving a hit with children and parents. Vicky Burford set up the group – aimed at babies and children aged up to five years – in June. She said: “I have two young, active children that have often torn around baby classes and have been reluctant to join in. “I set up Curious Babies with the aim to accommodate children of all needs and with all levels of attention. “Activities are set out in such a way that children can spend as much time as they like at them, whether that be seconds or minutes. We also have a quiet, sensory room for children who prefer a calmer environment.” Vicky has been working with young children for over 17 years and has a degree in Early Years. “Curious Babies is a sensorybased, messy play class, so predominately our activities are messy. For example, last week we played with ‘cloud dough and spaghetti’ and today we played with ‘clean mud’ (which wasn’t particularly clean!) “We also have less messy activities - because not everyone likes mess - and some totally

clean activities too. At the end of the group, we do singing activities, including things like parachutes, bubbles and puppets.” Classes are run on a Tuesday and Friday morning at St Francis Church, Keynsham. “I’ve been overwhelmed with the support of local parents and I feel the group has been very well received.” One mother, Kelly, said: ““My 18-month-old, Evie, really enjoys herself at Curious Babies - I enjoy it just as much too. “Evie is very shy and doesn’t always like to mingle, but how this class is structured allows

her to just do whatever she feels comfortable doing, without feeling like she has to join in with everything. Her confidence builds with each class. “Vicky is really passionate about ‘play’ which shows in every activity designed. I particularly thought breakfast cereals being used to make up the farmyard floor was genius.” There are some seasonal events coming up – Halloween parties on October 26 and 29, and Christmas parties on December 14 and 17. KEYNSHAM TOWN

Promising start to season for the Ks AFTER last season’s Toolstation Western League campaign was curtailed in December due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ks began their pre-season training schedule a month earlier than usual back in May. Behind the scenes, there were some structural and personnel changes made over the summer. The club decided to withdraw its A team from the Bristol & Suburban League, leaving three teams at a senior level. Off the field, the first team’s coaching staff remained unaltered, whilst James Tooze took over as the reserve team’s coach, assisted by Brian Sealy. The under-18s are now managed by Rich Duffy, assisted by Chris Gannon, and their job will be to manage the club’s pathway philosophy for players to move through the ranks from junior football to the first team. On the pitch, the first team had a few important personnel changes on the playing side as the season started on July 31. Firstly, manager John Allen introduced the highly-rated 18-year-old goalkeeper Seth Locke to his ranks, on loan from Frome Town to replace Ash Clark, an influential member of Town’s Division One title and promotionwinning side of 2018-19. Allen said: “Ash informed us that following the birth of his fourth child, he understandably could no longer commit to regular football, although he’ll cover when required for Seth, who has himself impressed everyone with his commanding and vocal presence at such a young age.” Three more important additions to last season’s squad have been Sam Jones, a versatile defensive midfielder signed from Odd Down, Scott Gregory, an experienced Western League centre half from Westbury United, and Will Hailston, a very experienced Southern League footballer, who has made a fantastic start in the amber and black with 10 goals to his name already. Despite stumbling at the first hurdle of the FA Cup courtesy of a 3-0 away defeat by Tring Athletic in Hertfordshire, Keynsham won all three of their opening Premier Division fixtures before a narrow 3-2 home defeat at the hands of one of the league’s ambitious Cornish newbies, Helston Athletic. There then followed three successive draws, against

The club’s home fixtures for October are as follows: Sat Oct 2: Reserves v Saltford (Somerset Senior Cup R1) 2pm Tue Oct 5: U18s v Portishead Town U18s (League) 7.45pm Sat Oct 9: Reserves v Stockwood Wanderers (League) 3pm Sat Oct 16: Reserves v Middlezoy Rovers (League) 3pm Tue Oct 19: Reserves v Chilcompton Sports (League) 7.45pm Sat Oct 23: Reserves v Watchet Town (League) 3pm Tue Oct 26: U18s v Chipping Sodbury Town U18s (League) 7.45pm Sat Oct 30: First team v Bitton Town (League) 3pm promotion hopefuls Buckland Athletic and Shepton Mallet (twice), before Bridport were put to the sword at Crown Fields on August Bank Holiday Monday, with the Ks running out 6-2 winners. Two of the Ks’ goals that afternoon were scored by 20-yearold Luke Banfield, who typifies the club’s pathway philosophy, having progressed from their schoolboy

ranks through the reserves to the first team. An ill-tempered 1-1 draw away to Street followed, before the Ks suffered only their second league loss of the season as the heavy early-season schedule began to take its toll, and Clevedon Town left Crown Fields as 4-0 victors. Next up was the return visit to Helston, and what an incredible

game that turned out to be. Keynsham only had nine fully fit players, but with two lads playing with pain-killing injections, a new signing coming out of retirement and young Lewis Pring (another example of the club’s successful pathway) stepping up from the reserves, they managed to take a squad of 13 on the marathon trek to Cornwall. Defensive frailties left the Ks trailing 4-1 and then 5-2, but they then made a scarcely believable comeback with Adey Harvey scoring a dramatic equaliser in the 89th minute to secure a point in a 5-5 draw. With a third of the season’s league fixtures already played, Keynsham Town secretary Jules French is backing his team to maintain the sort of form that has put them in a promising eighth place in the league table, proving that they mean business operating around the upper echelons of the Western League. French reasoned: “All in all we’ve been absolutely delighted with the start we’ve made. Indeed some of our football, especially in the first half of our early 3-0 win at Brislington, has been superb. “Our priority since I joined the club nine years ago has always been to progress. Now we’re well under way in what hopefully will be our first complete season in the Premier Division (after the last two seasons were affected by Covid) and we are looking to establish ourselves in the top half of the division before continuing to build from there.” Keynsham Town reserves have had an inconsistent start to their Uhlsport Somerset County Premier League campaign, with one win, one draw and four defeats from their opening games. Similarly it has been a mixed start for the under-18s, with a 2-1 FA Youth Cup defeat away to Street and a 5-2 reverse at home to Oldland Abbotonians in the Western Counties Floodlit Youth League. However, those two results sandwiched a remarkable 13-1 league victory away to Chipping Sodbury Town, including five goals from Shane Robbins and four by Lewis Morse. KEYNSHAM RUGBY

action after winning fight to survive SINCE the start of the pandemic, the committee, players and supporters of Keynsham Rugby Club have worked their socks off to ensure its survival. Garnering all possible grants and subsidies, and persuading sponsors to stay on board, has been an ongoing activity for 18 months at the community club. Innumerable members have donated time and materials to carry out improvements inside and out, and the club has kept abreast of requirements for social spacing and other measures when it was allowed to open for business. The coaches at all level have also been loyal, and there has been plenty of activity (periodically, as rules applied) and apart from training, attempts were made to play games under the prevailing contact/distancing/sanitisation guidelines. The fundraiser in the guise of the Dennis Cockbaine Lottery is continuing and throughout this period continued to pay prizes of £50 and £100 monthly, with Christmas bonus draws at £1,000. For all that angst, blood, sweat and tears, the club is grateful to those who shouldered the burden and it is looking forward to what is hoped will be a full season of competitive rugby. The season kicked off with a home fixture against Sidmouth, a side Keynsham have had close games with in the past - and this year was no different. The match was played at speed on a hard pitch on a hot day so it was not surprising that both sides made repeated handling errors. Rust was in abundance. Nevertheless a very enjoyable game ensued, enjoyed by a sizeable crowd. The first half ended with a score-line of 12-11, with tries by Jack Cowan and Joe Concannon and a Dean Weaver conversion, the visitors’ points coming from two penalties and an unconverted try. Unfortunately, two of the younger players, Lewis Button making his debut in South West 1 at full-back - and winger Matt Carr went off injured during the half. They were replaced by Frank

Switzer and Joe Clements, Jack Josham moving to the wing spot and Concannon to fullback. Keynsham’s discipline had been a problem in the first session but was much improved in the second, as they added 18 points whilst keeping Sidmouth scoreless. There were tries for skipper Hadyn Johnson, following a John Pearce snipe from a lineout, a conversion and a penalty by Weaver and a penalty try

awarded for a deliberate knockon. 29-11 and a pleasing five points league win. The following week, the squad travelled to St Austell, a 3.5-hour coach trip to Cornwall with seven changes of personnel, four debutants and a new halfback paring. A young side with just one player over the age of 30, and the game started poorly in both halves as they shipped a converted try within three

minutes on both occasions and were on the back foot from then on. They did show quite a bit of flair when in possession but had very little time with the ball. The amount of work done in defensive duties was magnificent and it was only in the last ten minutes when their energy flagged, allowing the Saints to run in 14 points. The first half ended with the score at 14-5, Keynsham’s points from a try by Jake Warren. Only one other try had been scored against them during the second half, apart from the blow within three minutes, and Keynsham scored their second unconverted try through Olly Gaston finishing off a good move in fine style. Final score 42-10 and no league points to bring back to Keynsham, but none of the squad should feel that they let the side down, What should have been the third match was cancelled as our opponents, Stroud RFC, opted to drop out of the league, unfortunately. The seconds and thirds have played a series of friendlies as their respective leagues were due to start four weeks after the first XVs; details will follow in next month’s issue.

n FRYS BOWLING CLUB

Dramatic end to an up-and-down campaign Thursday August 19: The penultimate game of the season saw Frys make the short trip to face Keynsham ‘A’. Keynsham took the early lead with rink 1 pulling away. Frys were able to counter on rinks 2 and 3, but Keynsham were able to halt progress. Keynsham held the lead at the halfway point, but rink 2 had a poor second half, which handed the game to Keynsham. Despite a comeback from rink 1, Keynsham ran out 48-31 winners, taking 10 points on a disappointing night for the visitors. n Scores: Scores: Rink 1: 10-15; Rink 2: 9-16; Rink 3: 12-17; Frys 31-48 Keynsham ‘A’ (0-10). Thursday August 26: The final game of the Bristol and District League Division 2 season saw Canford visit Frys. The home side were hoping

for a good result to finish the season. After a close start, Canford took the advantage at the halfway point, thanks to rink 1 pulling away. Rinks 2 and 3 stayed close. Rink 2 lost out on the final end, with Canford picking up the 2 shots required to take a 15-14 win. Rink 3 saw Frys pick up 3 in the final 2 ends to draw the rink, but Canford still held the overall advantage. A mistake on rink 1 gave Frys 2 shots, which helped Frys on their way to closing the gap, with Canford struggling in the reduced light. The final end saw Frys needing 5 shots for the match and rink. Frys had the better end, but Frys’ skip narrowly missed Canford’s second bowl twice, which would have given Frys enough to at least tie the game. Canford held on to a 39-43 win with only 1

point going to the home side, bringing to an end a somewhat disappointing and up-anddown season with a 9th placed finish. With there being no promotion or relegation, Frys retain their position in Division 2. n Scores: Rink 1: 12-15; Rink 2: 14-15; Rink 3: 13-13; Frys 39-43 Canford (1-9). Frys 2021 season record: Played 18, won 7, drew 0, lost 11. Shots for 795, shots against 822, shots difference -27. Points 72. Over 90s rise to the challenge

THREE men aged over 90 and still playing golf led a competition which raised more than £400 for the Royal British Legion. Don Norris, Ray Bevan and Ken Kelloway captained teams made up of players from the seniors section at Saltford Golf Club for their Seniors 90+ Challenge Cup. There were three teams of 25 in the special Royal British Legion Charity Stableford, with Don’s team coming out on top with 352 points from Ray’s side with 344, while Ken’s team finished on 343. The points were based on the scores of the ten best

players in each team, with Dairmid O’Mahoney winning the individual prize with 39 points. Terry Box had the same score but lost on count back. The event raised £415 for the Poppy Appeal Golf Fund in the RBL’s centenary year. Peter Smith thanked the

Saltford golfers on behalf of the RBL. He said: “This is hugely appreciated and goes towards the work undertaken by us throughout the UK for those who have served their country, in times past and closer to the present.”

A Saltford senior’s section spokesman said: “With next year being the 40th anniversary of the Falklands conflict, it seems a good reason to stage another event for this worthwhile cause.” l Pictured, triumphant captain Don Norris (centre), Ken Kelloway (left) and Ray Bevan.

n SALTFORD TENNIS CLUB New courses for the young SALTFORD Tennis Club have added two new courses to their coaching programme. With the recent success of Emma Raducanu winning the US Open, they have introduced a Girls4tennis course designed for girls to gain confidence in the basic tennis skills (age nine-plus). No previous experience of playing the game is necessary, and the course is also suitable for those relatively new to tennis and looking to improve their skills.

To advertise, contact Emma on 0117 9082121 or 07715770448

Classes take place on Wednesdays between 6pm and 7pm. Also, with half term fast approaching, the club are running a LTA Youth Start course. It comprises six high-quality sessions for children aged 4 to 8 and introduces tennis in a fun and relaxed environment. Both courses are run by the club’s level-3 coach, James Begg.
